Starting point is 00:00:00 Cotton Marcus. If it hadn't been for Cotton Marcus. If it hadn't been for Cotton Marcus, I'd be married a long time of Garkas. Yeah, coming up swinging. Katie, my first note? My very first note? Yeah. I really like this movie. Oh.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Oh, no. Oh, oh, no. Oh, OK. All right. Let's, why don't you talk to me about your background with this movie and also what movie it is? We're doing the 2010 film, The Last Exorcism, bit of a found footage film, about the last exorcism of Cotton Marcus, who's given up the game, he's moving on. The Exorcism game. The Exorcism game. Marcus, who's given up the game, he's moving on.
Starting point is 00:01:06 The exorcism game. The exorcism game. Yeah. He seems to have lost his faith some. But he still seems to be willing to do preaching, which I thought was odd. Yeah, but it's because it's what he's good at. His daddy taught him young to be a preacher man. Yeah. I just remember when I saw this movie when it came out, I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I'm shocked to hear this news also. I feel like all the acting is really good at it. I agree with that. Yeah. And I was tickled by the dumb ending. It's so stupid though. But before we get to that, we got a lot to get through. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Like the banana bread sermon. First of all. First of all. So I grew up Catholic. I don't, I've hardly ever been to any other kind of religious right. Not a lot of crowd participation that isn't prescripted, you know. Sure, sure. And I, not a lot of auction participation that isn't prescripted, you know? Sure, sure. And I, not a lot of auctioneer talk.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Do preachers really talk like auctioneers? Yeah, I mean, I think if the spirits we've been full through them, they'll start speeding up. Weird. Yeah. What happens when the spirit moves through you? Is it like when Taco Bell moves through you? No? I don't know. I think we'd talk about you at least had a satisfying meal before that happened. Yeah, that's fair. So he just, from the jump, Cotton is talking to this film crew who's following him on his, he wants them to follow him on his last exorcism. Yeah, he says he's done about 150 of them. Right, right, right. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. thi. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. So. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. thi. th. the. thi. the. to. thi. the. to. thi. the. the. the. th. th done about 150 of them. Right, right, right, right. And they're in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Baton Rouge! And he's the son of a preacher and admits that the whole thing is just a show. He talks about his father grooming him to be a preacher, which I thought was an interesting turn of phrase. And I think it's a thing that happens. I'm sure. Judging by other movies I've interesting turn of phrase. And I think it's a thing that happens. I'm sure. Judging by other movies I've seen where it's happened. Other documentaries such as this one.
Starting point is 00:03:12 I mean, it is a documentary. I love that the dad opens the safe in his office and he's like, I'm the only one that knows this combination. Well, I'm the only one that knows this combination. Well, me and my accountant. Tell your accountant. Well, they gotta be able to get to the money. I guess. And also, now everyone knows it as well, because they're filming him while he's opening the safe.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Yeah, he's like, don't film the number. I mean it. Yeah, obviously. It's fucking assholes. Daniel and Iris, but it's not pronounced Iris. Wait, I can't remember how it's pronounced. Aries? Aries?
Starting point is 00:03:52 You're right. So we get to see a bit of his home life. His son had some issues at birth. He's deaf, if not, a heart of hearing if not deaf. He wears hearing aids and I think diminished Cotton's faith like in God somewhat. Yeah, he kind of describes thanking the doctor instead of God when it turned out his son was going to live. Right. And I think he sort of, at that point, embraced science more than faith. Right, for sure. For sure. And we find out that he gets a lot of requests via the mail for exorcisms.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Yeah. So he just picks one at random from Ivanwood, Louisiana. I believe Katie would pronounce that, Ahvan Wood. Louisiana. Louisiana. I'm from the north. And they start talking about how different it feels in like Bayou country. He says it's ancient. Some of these plantations have been standing here for hundreds of years, sir. Not ancient. Not what ancient means. I will say though that it feels weird
Starting point is 00:05:04 down there. I've only ever been to New Orleans. I've never been outside of it at all. Yeah. But even New Orleans itself feels weird. There's like a weird tension in the air in New Orleans I feel. Well maybe I was walking here on New Orleans like at three o'clock in the morning drunk and it was it was spooky. Yeah I believe that. Yeah, they do talk about how this you the the th. the th. the the th. the the th. the the the th. the the the the th. I had had had their their their their their their their their their th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was thi. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was the the the the the the the the the th. I was the th. I was th. I was thi. I was thi. I was thi. I was thi. I was th. I was only only. I was thi. I was th. I was thi. I was th. I was th. I was th. I was spooky. Yeah I believe that. Yeah, but yeah they do talk about how this you know had five or six different flags fly over it and all of this. Right, right and yeah I think it's a really good setting for a horror movie. Yeah. Definitely but also fuck living in a place where there are
Starting point is 00:05:38 alligators. Like he's just driving down the road and there's an alligator it's like no. Now. Have you ever seen a wild alligator? No. Oh, yeah. It's real weird. No. I live somewhere where the most dangerous thing is like a groundhog. No, we've had all the other.
Starting point is 00:05:55 We've had all the peaters in this area. Were those like pets, probably. They got loose. I mean, they're not like breeding. They're not fucking eaters. They're not going around in Barry Pepper's basement. Oh, that's right. We probably did a lot of alligator talk at the crawl episode. Go back and listen to that one for all our gator stories. Yeah. Just for me, none. I don't know anything. I have one about seeing one when I was like in third grade at my grandmother's house in Florida Fuck that
Starting point is 00:06:35 But they stop at a truc stop and ask people for information and every one of them starts telling them about the devil or ghosts or something And it's really great. I like the the the last lady when he's like and where was the UFO sighting? She's like, well, that is over this way. And this felt like, oh, they're a more competent Blair Witch project. Absolutely. They're not just a bunch of fucking ding dongs. They are kind of ding dongs though. Sure, they get ding dongier as the movie goes on. Absolutely. So they show up at the house? They, yeah, they're driving down like a dirt road and pass a teenager in a pickup truck. Yeah. And they ask him for directions and he's like, I want you to turn around. And when you go past stuff you've already seen, keep going and just get back on the highway and go back where you came from. I was like, yeah, you little shit, that's awesome.
Starting point is 00:07:29 That guy is such a good, like, creepy actor. Yeah, definitely. Caleb Landry Jones. You might know him from Get Out. Oh, he wasn't Get Out. Yeah, he's the brother in get out. Oh, okay. Yeah. Caleb Landry Jones. Yeah. He's also a musician. He makes weird psych rock music. Oh boy, kids these days. Whatever happened a good old-fashioned rock and roll? I mean, really.
Starting point is 00:08:05 All these beep boops now. And he hits their car with rocks as well. Yes, he does. It turns out that he is a resident of the house they're going to. Yeah. So they go and meet with the father, and they have to turn the cameras off while this meeting's happening, but they don't. Well, I like that they don't address that they got him to put the camera, that they got him to agree to being filmed. The cameras just come back on. It's never addressed. I actually like that. Sure. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And we meet Nell, who's super sweet. She is.
Starting point is 00:08:45 She likes the one woman's Doc Martin. So the woman gives her Doc Martins. Yeah. She's like, you probably can't get those within 300 miles of here. Yeah. So for the rest of the movie, Nell's wearing Doc Martins. I like that she does not take them off. No. Very cute. Yeah, for sure. And we learn that every time there's a dead animal on the farm,
Starting point is 00:09:05 the father discovers Nell's clothes and they'll be all bloody. But she has no memory of it happening. No memory, no. So Cotton gets the father, Lewis, to get a pan of water to put Nell's feet in. And it begins to boil. Which is creepy. And then we hear Caleb say to put Nell's feet in, and it begins to boil, which is creepy. And then we hear Caleb say to Cotton that he saw something, him put something in there. So now we realize that he's actually faking not just an exorcism, but all of the demon stuff as well. Which is crazy because the people already believe it, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah, but he wants to show the camera that it's all a show.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Yeah, it's all a gimmick. Yeah, he like goes into her room and sets it up with like 9 volt batteries to shock people and a little speaker that plays demon sounds, which I thought you, there's no way you weren't caught out on that in 150 exorcism. There's a fishing string that's attached to a picture frame that he can jerk back and forward. Like, there's just no way, but okay. You've read Will Stor versus the Supernatural. I think we've talked about this before. I have.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Yeah. Highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in this kind of thi. thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. That, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, I, thi, thi, thi, which, thi, which, which, thi. thi. thi. theea. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, thi, in this kind of stuff. It's so good. It's so good and he's a total skeptic going into it so it's like it's just the writing is so good and so comedically dry but very funny and then there are parts of the book that are extremely upsetting. Extremely upsetting. I met the one, when he goes to the one exorcism with the guy, Lou Gentile. A Philly guy, right? Yeah, I got my picture taken with him at a horror convention years ago. He has since passed away, but yes. My friend, Josh, from the Neon Maniacs episode, he and I were a horror convention,
Starting point is 00:11:07 and Lou Gentile was there, we saw him speak, and we're like, this is ridiculous, we're gonna go pick to take with this guy. And then to like, later read that book and go, oh no. It's Lou Gentilly, he's a bad guy. So Cotton figures out that it's this one demon named Abelam. Abelam? Abelam?
Starting point is 00:11:29 Which I kept thinking about Hell Hell Hells LLC, the Abadon. Abadon. That's funny because all I kept going, hmm, Black Betty, Abelam. Just over. Like Betty had a child. Ablam. Something gone well. Nothing, ma'am. Nothing more now.
Starting point is 00:11:45 All this, and while we're getting these scenes, they're also interspaced with sort of background scenes for Nell, where we learned that her mother passed away, somewhat suddenly of breast cancer, a couple years back, and that her dad has pulled her out of Sunday school and is also homeschooling her? Yeah. Like what kind of farmer has time to homeschool, but okay? And it's, I don't know, she talks about how she got pulled out of Sunday school because
Starting point is 00:12:14 they were learning about non-religious music. And then she pulls out her recorder and plays green sleeves. A non-religious song. Okay, yeah, yeah. That's just weird to me. It is. Is it like rebelling to play green sleeves? Or did the makers of this film think that green sleeves was a hymn? Yes.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Okay, checking and checked. Because you could tell me that green sleeves is indeed a religious song, to go, yeah, yeah, green soups, their My favorite. I think it's just like Irish folk song, isn't it? Yeah, but there are soops, religious. That's why they're just crossing over, all right, fine. So he conducts this exorcism, where he's casting out the demon, and doing all of his tricks and winking at the camera while he's doing the actresses on her. Oh man, let's see. And she seems to be okay. Right, and he gets, he gets paid by Lewis. And then he goes back to the hotel room and he's having a conversation with his wife on the phone where she's been crying. We don't hear her side of it but essentially it's that like they can't afford
Starting point is 00:13:25 a new hearing aid for their son. Right, right. And he's like, I just want health insurance. I was like, I bet you vote Republican, you shit, you know? Well, maybe he did and now he's had this change. Well, it doesn't matter. He's never going to cast a vote again. Maybe from hell. So he's in his hotel room and all of a sudden who's there? No and she's not talking. No she's being creepy. Yeah yeah yeah. I'm trying to make out with with Eriese. Yeah. Just kissing her shoulder all. And she's trying to undress herself too. Yeah. And then she pukes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:10 And at this point in the movie I'm just like, oh this is a movie about abuse. Yes. This is a bummer. Yes, absolutely. And this is reminding me of that one movie where the woman had dementia. And then she becomes a snake lady. Yes. Yes. Yes. thee. the. thease. thease. thease. thease. thease. thease. thease. thease. the. the. the. the. the. thease. thease. the. the. the. thi. the. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And the. And the. And the. And th. the. the. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. the. the. the. the. the. to to to toea. to toea. toea. toea. toea. toea. toea. the thea. thea. thea. the had dementia and then she becomes a snake lady. Yes, but really it was just about not taking care of the elderly? Yeah. Yeah. The haunting of someone. Deborah Logan, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Or the taking of Deborah Logan. I hated that. Yeah, yeah. So they take nail to the hospital and the blood tests are normal.
Starting point is 00:14:42 And Dad shows up and he doesn't trust doctors. Because they let his wife die. Right, right, right. And so he takes her back home. And this is when Cotton goes to visit the local church that they used to go to? Yeah, I think, because he thinks that they see him as like a big or that Lewis sees him as like a big city guy and so they need someone local to like boots on the ground it you know. Right, right. The lady at the local church I
Starting point is 00:15:14 think her name is Becky. Yeah. She looks just like the front desk lady at Lucy's hip-hop dance class whom I love Kathy. She's today. She's super cute, she's real nice, kids love her. And I was like, oh, fucking Kathy's in this movie. You gotta watch out though. We found out some stuff about Becky later and Kathy might be involved in the same thing. I know, well, we're gonna do him a couple more sessions of hip-hop dance, then we'll see. Oh, I love the idea of little kid hip-hop dance class. I'll take a video and send it to you. It's so fucking cute.
Starting point is 00:15:49 You wouldn't believe it. What sort of songs are they dancing to? Like, radio hip-hop of the like, you know, just... Like, woomp, there it is or something. Yeah. I love it. Yeah, it's insane. Although, it has to be Lucy very aware of her own ass.
Starting point is 00:16:14 She just walks around smacking it all the time. That was sort of an unintended consequence of enrolling a four-year-old in hip-hop dance class. As the adult child ages, it becomes aware of its own ass. Sometimes I'll just go, butt cheek, butt cheek, and slap it twice. I'm like, please, I'm trying to go to bed. Anyway, Kathy rules. Hi, Kathy rules. Kathy rules.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Yeah. So we, he finds out some information about how the family is withdrawn from basically society around them and the church. After the death of the mother. He, the preacher, or the, yeah, the local preacher says he hasn't seen her in like three years. Right, right. And so this makes them go back to the house? I don't remember why they don't just go home at this point. I think they're just like concerned about Nell's well-being at this point. Right, they think her father's abusing her, right? Which would make sense? That she's exhibiting abuse, like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:27 It's a real big bummer. So when they get there, is um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, th, th, um, th, th, um, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, thi that, thi thi thi thi thi,mer so when they get there is this when she has cut her her brother's face up real good yeah yeah Caleb's face is bleeding and Lewis is chasing her around yeah and they there's like a who's gonna take Caleb to the hospital who's gonna stay with now and Caleb passes Cotton a note that says, don't leave her alone with him. Yeah. Yeah. So dad takes... Which just plays into this idea. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:17:54 Right. Caleb is feeding their fear. Yeah. And he's also been sort oftheir side and that their his dad is being ridiculous. Right, even though he's also being a dick to them. Caleb is an island. Caleb's just looking out for number one. Yeah, for Caleb. For Caleb. For Caleb. Um, blah. So while they're staying with now, there's like a sound of a baby crying. Yeah. And they found her trying to drown a baby doll in a bathtub?
Starting point is 00:18:32 Yeah, yeah. Weird. Yeah, it's creepy. It's good and creepy. Then they listen to the answering machine messages like a bunch of nebs. Well, don't forget she's also been chained to her bed by her father. Oh, that's right. She has ankle shackles on. So they get a hack saw and free her and she's saying, don't free me.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Yeah, my dad's going to be so mad if I'm not chained up when he gets home. Yeah. Yeah. So they listen to the voicemails and learn that she's pregnant. Mm-hmm. It's very upsetting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi they they they they they they they they they they they they they the voicemails and learn that she's pregnant. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. It's very upsetting. Yeah, they think it's incest, which is a fine leap of logic. Yeah. Oh, don't forget that they were also, they recorded the baby sounds, which leads me to
Starting point is 00:19:16 have the note, Latin baby noises. Yeah, earlier in the movie Cotton has said to Lewis, oh, you don't read Latin. Just like, just such a fucking dick ass thing to say. But a good callback to my favorite line in the movie Demons, I don't read Latin. Oh, wait, yes, I do. Oh, wait, yes I do. That's right. That movie's so shitty. It's so good. We haven't done a shitty Italian movie in a while, have we?
Starting point is 00:19:45 We have not. Let's do one soon, like maybe week after next, which was supposed to be my pick. You get to pick a shitty Italian movie. I'm going to. I love it. Yeah, the doctor calls and says that she can't be on Halcyon, which is the drug that was in Resident Evil. was it? That that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that thiiiiiii that that that was in Resident Evil. Was it?
Starting point is 00:20:06 That knocked everybody out. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. So I guess they were giving that to her for her to rest. Also, I guess her pregnancy is proceeding normally because she got a positive pregnancy test. Right. She's producing pregnancy hormones? Yeah, apparently.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Okay. I guess that would happen. Are you saying that because of what happens later on in the movie? Yeah. Yeah. So Nell takes the camera after they all go to bed. This is good of her to do this so that they have some more information about what's going on. She films herself beating a cat to death.
Starting point is 00:20:42 I was very upset by the scene not just because it's a cat getting beaten to death but because when she's approaching the cat it looks so upset. Its ears are like plastered to the back of its head and its eyes are like saucers and I just thought like what did they do to that cat to get it to look so upset you know? Hopefully it's been trained to look that way and it's like I'm just doing this the the the the the train trying train train trying trying trying trying trying to to trying to to try to try to to to tryn't to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the try. I try. I'm just. I'm just try. I'm just. I'm just. I'm just try. I'm try. I'm try. I'm try. I'm try. I'm try. I'm just. I'm try. I'm just just just try. I'm like, I'm just doing this. What are you trying to look away? I'm just doing this for treats everybody. It's a living. Oh man, I don't think so. I don't like it. No, they were scaring the shit out of that cat.
Starting point is 00:21:11 They were menacing that cat. Yeah, they're probably put a bunch of cucumbers thawne thi. they're snakes? My cats have never seen a snake. They're dumb as dirt. Yeah, but if they ever seen a cucumber? I'll try, I don't know, I'll find out. I'll ask them. There are, to be fair, way more cucumbers in my house than snakes. That you know of. And then she, after she beats the cat to death, she takes the camera back inside and films Cotton sleeping. Right. And we've seen that she has a picture on her wall that she's drawn of a cat that has been beaten to death. So it's like hmm cut to the nose. Is this when we see the drawings that are like of cotton standing in front of a fire holding a cross-up? Potentially, yes. Or is that later on in the movie? It's this all of this bit here
Starting point is 00:22:05 of just like Nell doing weird stuff in the dark, lunging and screaming at the camera, it all kind of takes a while. Right, right. Oh yeah, this is where we see like there's pictures of the crew dead. They're all like hacked up and and stuff, yeah. And they get freaked out. Yeah. So they agree to do a second. to get to get to get to get to get to get to get the second their to get their their to get their to get their their to get to get to get their to get their to get to get to get to get to get to get to get to get to get freaked out. Yeah. So they agree to do a second exorcism. Yeah. Why? Because they got to get the demon out. Does he believe there's a demon at this point?
Starting point is 00:22:34 I think he believes that she believes? Okay. So he's trying that sort of, Yeah, placebo effect of getting the team out. I guess it's been his experience and exorcisms, huh? 150 of them under his belt. Euras says, what could a second exorcism possibly accomplish? And I wrote down, that's a great question, Eris.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Erease. Erease. So this is when Dad comes home, but Caleb's not with him. And dad's all upset that the demon is defiled his daughter. That's why they're going to do the second exorcism. Oh right, they just play the voicemail for him that she's pregnant. Yeah, and like stare at him while it's happening. Yeah. Like he's going to be like, who's a doozy? Yeah, right. What reaction were you expecting? Yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Wait, when the recorder music is playing at this point. She's, that kid cannot get enough of fucking green sleeves. But she's not playing it. So is the demon playing green sleeves? The demon's like, she's been playing this in her room for years. You think I don't know fucking green sleeves? Who do you think taught are green sleeves? It's non-religious music. We're going to get so many emails of people being like, actually it's religious. It's based on Ave Maria. The most religious song. Great song.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Hot jam. Not as hot as Be Not Afraid, but I'll take a... I really like Chris Cornell's cover of a Maria. It's real good. I've never heard that. It's real good. Dude could belt it out. He had a great voice. Oh, oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:19 God rested his soul. Oh, you fucking kidding me? Chris Cornell's dead. that's true. Hey, are you fucking kidding me, Chris Cornell? Chris Cornell's dead. It's true. Oh God, everyone's dead these days. What's this world coming to? We find Nell on top of a wardrobe in her room, just being weird. Yeah, she's doing a lot of just like, sulking around, I guess.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Yeah. I wanted her to be tapping her knees like the little kid in Juwan. Oh yeah. Yeah and she's wearing like a Reagan-McNeil nightgown too. Yeah, yeah classic nightgown. Very on the nose. Classic nightgown reference. Every time something has been on the nose I've just touched my nose into the camera. For the listeners of home, that boop happens when Katie touches her nose. And there's flies buzzing in her room. Mm-hmm. Sure sign of a demon.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Or like, you left some pie crust under your bed. Or you were like, I'm done with this banana peel, jug it onto my bed. Yeah, fucking kids. She does like a cool back bend that I definitely could do when I was a teenager. So she did all of her own contortions for this movie. Oh, I believe it. So much so that she fucked her back up. Oh God for this piece of shit. Sorry. But she's doing like these like weird like making her neck swell at different points
Starting point is 00:25:50 and like it's real gross looking. That seems dangerous. Yeah for sure. And and it turns out it was. Yeah. So breaks her own fingers which I thought was very good. Oh that's so good. Because she tells them that if they can be quiet for 10 seconds that the demon will let the to let let to let to let to let to let to let to let to let to let to let their to let their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. their tells them that they can be quiet for 10 seconds that the demon will let her go. And so she starts counting and breaking her fingers. Yeah. Oh, that's good demon, if you're going to be a demon to break kids' fingers, obviously. I mean, you're not being a demon to help old ladies cross the street. You're not being a demon to do some work with your local community non-profit. No, you're being a demon to break kids fingers, obviously.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I got into this business to break kids fingers and that's what I'm doing right now. I'm part of the demon, demon local 118. Sorry, I should have gone with 138. I forgive me, it would have been a better number. What does that even mean though? The Misfits Lyme. Yeah. It's a reference to something. I can't remember what it is. Yeah. Like every misfits they get a reference to something. We used to cover that song because it only has three notes. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. That's the most that they could get Doyle to remember at any given time. I'll take that Doyle. Coming for Doyle here.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Revereign, how about a blowing job? And he's like, I know she's not a demon because that's not what they're called. Because I know what a blowjob is called. Good for you, fucking guy. I've got the internet. I have a copy of 17 magazine right here. Wait, why would 17 magazine talk about blowjobs? Because that's how you learned about what blowjobs were. Oh really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Okay. Not like tips, but just what it was, you know? Things that I feel like you couldn't publish now, huh? Yeah. Or just the internet has made it unnecessary? Right. Nanagami a subscription to 17 magazine when I was like 14 and I remember reading it being like, huh?
Starting point is 00:28:08 So that's a blowing job. That's what a blowing job is. But so, okay, so yes, a blowing job. So what is she behaving this way? I don't know. Okay. Because like what we're supposed to take from that, I guess, is that she, it is just her, there is no demon, because she doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:28:29 I mean, a demon would clearly know the phrase blowjob, right? Sure. Demons are dirty boys. Dirty old boys. Up to date on modern slang, too. Abilam. Bum. Bum. The name is so versatile. Really is. I have a know that says Lewis Boasts in. Pretty sure that's supposed to be busts. He didn't come in. He does this 45 times in the movie. I don't even know which scene we're talking about anymore.
Starting point is 00:29:04 He busts in with a shotgun. Mm-hmm. That he's shooting to get them to leave. Mm-hmm. And Cotton runs inside with Nell and the crew because we have to keep filming the movie. Right. The movie has to continue. What if it's just part of the movie was the same waiting outside for him? Just sitting in the truck like checking their watches every so often? Yeah, that'd be funny. Yeah, better for them really. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. So they're going to do the exorcism now.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Now's when the exorcism is going to happen. And they're going to do up in the barn, I think, right? Yeah, yeah, you're right. And Dad still has the shotgun. Right. Oh, and this is when the finger-breaking and blowing jobs happened. You're right, okay. Yeah. So how do they find out that she, like, does she tell them about Logan? Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, she tells them in like a moment of lucidity about Logan.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Okay, so basically that she got fucked. Yeah. Okay. Good for her. Yeah. I mean, that's not what happened, but I like to imagine that it is. So they are leaving town and they're like, hey, because Nell's all better now after the exorcism, I guess. But also her fingers are just got home splints. Like maybe go, maybe you can trust doctors to splint her fingers so that she can use them again.
Starting point is 00:30:37 No, just a pencil and some spit, you'll be fine. Oh, terrible. But as they're leaving, they're like, hey, isn't that the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant the restaurant that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's, that's, terrible. But as they're leaving, they're like, hey, isn't that the restaurant that Logan worked at? Like, did they really just show up and say like, hey, kids are going to be a dad? Like what? But he's not. No, he has never boned. No.
Starting point is 00:30:56 He has never boned. Because I'm like, he's obviously gay. And I was like, yeah, she's like, you don't like girls, right? And he's like, yeah, I guess, whatever. Are you people going to leave if I say yes? Yes. Yes. But we learned in this scene that Pastor Manley has been throwing parties for like 16-year-old kids. Yeah, and the last one he attended was like within the last year. And Nell was the th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thu, th. I th. I th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I, th. I I, th. I th. I thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. And, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. And, thia. And, thia. And, thi, thi, thi, was attended was like within the last year. And Nell was there. So Pastor Manley lied about when he last saw Nell.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Dunt da. Rather than just going home like regular fucking people, yeah, they turn around and go back to the farm. You can call, you know, as a priest, or a pastor, he's probably a mandatory, or a mandated reporter, so he would have to call child protective services and let them know this was going on. Because she's still a child. She's a child and he's responsible, yeah. Yeah, so he should have done that, or at the very least, 911.
Starting point is 00:31:58 I mean, a lot of, at a lot of points in this movie, he should have called 911. Yeah. Uh-huh. Like when they thought she was being abused by her father and they were like, well, just hang out with her and protect her, like, no, call the fucking cops. That man has fired a shotgun at us? Yeah. No, okay.
Starting point is 00:32:18 All right. There you go. So they get back to the house and they see that she's drawn pentagrams and the number 666 everywhere like a god damn metal teenager. It's pretty great. Now did she do it or did the soon to be met Satanist to it? I think probably a little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. Sure. Daniel, the cameraman's like, we should just get out of here and no one ever listens to poor Daniel.
Starting point is 00:32:49 Yeah, I mean the rest of the time Daniel's a fucking idiot, so. Yeah. So they hear distant screams coming from outside the house. Yes. So they have to go outside the house. What's out there? A bonfire? Abilam. Nails given birth? I baleam. I mean that baby did not seem ready to be born. That red-red baby? It seemed very new. It was like, she came... What are you doing, Becky? She gave birth to a bundle of redhots that came out of her. It was real funny.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Yeah, and Becky's just like gazing into the birth canal, like, this is nice, this is really nice guys. And Reverend Manley is leading the satanic ritual. And Lewis is tied up. The father is tied up and one of our characters says to the other, is he tied up and the other one says a little. What? What? What?
Starting point is 00:34:01 You're either tied up or you're not. It's like you're not, you can't be a little bit pregnant, you know. So they take the baby when it comes up and Becky throws it into the fire? Yeah. She sure does. It's so silly. When she throws it into the fire, it's like a gout of flame and screaming and a, I think it might be a shape, it was kind of hard to tell.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Yeah, I think like, Abelam is in the fire now. Okay. Abadoth. And they're having, like, this is filmed kind of badly, right? Because it's like found footage, but I think also just was very cheaply made. And so they're having they they they they're having they're having they're having they're having they're having they're having they're having they're having they're having their they're theaseasease. their thiase. thiase. thiase. thiase. thiase th. thoes. thoes. thease. thoes. thoes. th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I'm. I. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. It. It. It. It's. It's like. It's like. It's like. A. A. A. I th. A. I th. th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I found footage but I think also just was very cheaply made and so they're having um a Reese ask all these very obvious questions yeah like is Nell is Nell there like you're standing right next to these people you know what I mean it's just I don't know she was looking at her phone yeah but not using it to call 911. Anyway hail Abelam. She's live tweeting the birth of Abelam. She's like, I don't know, that baby doesn't look ready. So Cotton Goes At the Fire
Starting point is 00:35:13 a la the picture that was drawn of him earlier. I guess it was more like collage work that it was a picture. Yeah, but a decoupage perhaps. A little decoupage. In Bautil Rouge. Braton Rouge? Decoupage. Bagette? No. I think you're losing it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:37 You're going to have to ha-hah-haw to get back to him. So tinn... Daniel and Iriace go running and we see that Irace is murdered. Yeah. And then limb from limb as the picture had previously told us she would be. And then Caleb kills Daniel? Yeah it cuts his head off. Yeah. It's a very like a kind of a good reveal because Daniel is holding the camera. He turns around. We see like a suit like a, like a torture to him like a suit like a the tor. like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like.. like like like like like like like. the the the the the the to. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. to. to to to to to to. Like. Like. Like. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to. to. to. I. I. I. to. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. Like. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. to. the. the. the. the. the. the. Yeah. It's a very like a kind of a good reveal because Daniel is holding the camera He turns around we see like a suit like a like the torso of a man in a suit The camera looks up at him. It's Caleb. He's slashed. That's it. Yeah. And then the camera hits the ground like Blair witch and every other other it's got to go. It's got to end somehow. Yeah, it's the HP Lovecraft. They's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they's they're. they're. the. the. the. the. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's. Yeah. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's gotta end somehow. Yeah. It's the HP Lovecraft, they're at the door, I'm finishing this.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Ah! This is so dumb. And that is the end of the last exorcism. There'll never be another exorcism. There will be several sequels though, won't there? Yeah, at least one. Is there more than just the last exorcism too? Let me find out.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Still sizzling. Well, you tell me how you felt about the last exorcism. So here's the thing. I really like the actor Patrick Fabian that's playing Cotton Marcus. I think he's very charming. He's delivering every line like he expects you to be like mind blown at the end of everything he's saying. He wants to say like boom at the end of everything. There goes the dynamite. And I think all the acting is great. I like that it's like this like potentially really heavy movie that ends in the single-handedly silliest way possible.
Starting point is 00:37:31 I mean. It's like this like it's that thing of like just like pulling the band-aid off and you're like, all right, all right, that's ridiculous. I mean, how else are they gonna end it, like, a court trial of Lewis for the incest? No, I mean, I feel like you should know the ending before you start making it. It's a documentary, Katie. Okay, fine.
Starting point is 00:38:00 So, am I grading this now? Am I giving its rating? Yeah. Uh, it's a solid six. He says you loved it. I believe my first note was, I really like this movie. But I know what it is. I know that it's a trash movie, but it's also, I think it's very fun.
Starting point is 00:38:20 What did you think, Katie? It is. I don't have to keep track of a lot of characters, which you know is a thing that I like. I mean, it's fine, but it feels very of a like 2007 to 2011 era of films. For sure. In which everything is found footage, and... Everything is just kind of like badly pieced together. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:49 There's just like the second act is just entirely nonsense of a person doing. I don't know, it's just, this is not for me. I thought this was a trash heap. The last five minutes of the movie I was just like, are you? Are you? Because, like, when they're driving away, and they find, and they find, they find, and the, I, I, I, I, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th th thi th thi th thi th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi was a trash heap. The last five minutes of the movie, I was just like, are you? Are you? Because when they're driving away, and then they find, before they find the diner, I was like,
Starting point is 00:39:10 is this seriously the end of the movie? And then I thought, after I saw the real end, they maybe should have just left it there. We went home and never found out what tha ell and her child. No, and I spent this money on my kids' new hearing aids. I'm gonna give it a four. Okay. I don't think I'd watch it again. All right. Yeah. So there was a second one. Have you seen the sequel? I have not, no. And then there was a planned third one, which was eventually canceled. Because they realized it was called the last exorcism and you can't just keep doing this. Yeah. It never materialized
Starting point is 00:39:51 according to Wikipedia. Come on the Conytes could get three movies out of a franchise. What are you people doing? How else LLC one is fantastic. It is. I would watch that again a million times before I'd watch this again. I just watched it again recently. It's really fun. Did you? It's a really good movie. A really great movie. Hi Jordan from the third one. Cognit! Put us in tough with the Conyetties, please. You know what else brings me joy? What? A message from a patron. Ooh, can I have joy too? Yes, you can. Real quick, I want to say something that we've gotten a lot of people who have commented on
Starting point is 00:40:31 the podcast, that one of the things that we like about it is that we don't have ads. And we don't have ads because you people are amazing. Yeah, I hate sitting through ads in podcasts. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I get so fucking pissed about it. I love podcasts that time it out so that their like ads are in 30 second increments and you can just skip ahead a couple times and you're done with it. And they put like a little musical number going back in so when you hear the music you know to stop skipping. Perfect. Yes. So, uh, on that note, this is a message from Patron named Drew. Who says, Drew works great. I'm glad you're doing great work, Drew.
Starting point is 00:41:14 True, true. True, thanks for your service. Just tune his own horn right out of the game. True works great. I presume this is Drew Lachey of 98 degrees, Nick's brother. The other Lachey? The lesser frosted-to- Cincinnati's.
Starting point is 00:41:33 Cincinnati's finest. Listen, you got Lache brothers and chili over pasta. What else do you want? Why do you guys put in chili over pasta, though? It makes the meal go longer. You can stretch a meal out. There's just two different things. No, they're fine.
Starting point is 00:41:54 They put chili inside a tortilla, too, but that doesn't make it a meal. Might, I'll try it. The more I think about it. True, you get me through my tha. tha. th. th. th I think about it. Drew says, you do get me through my long work days. I'm in an accounting office and have listened to all the episodes several times. Oh Drew, I'm sorry I assumed you were a 98 degrees member. I wish you a very relaxed season. I'm going into it myself. It's a comforting dialogue to hear. Oh, we're comforting.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Oh, that's nice. Thank you for doing this podcast. Thank you, Drew. thank you, thrown. thrown. Thank you, Drew. to try yourself something nice. Get a Snickers bar. Starting point is 00:43:05 Katie. Alan. What are we doing next week? Next week we're doing another film of your choosing, but one that I'm very excited to see. You let me pick again. And then I'm probably going to let you pick the stupid Italian movie after that too.
Starting point is 00:43:21 I'm feeling indecisive. We are doing the 1995, I think 1995. Around then, yeah. Around then, film, Tales from the Hood. Very excited about this. I wanted to do this since the beginning of the podcast, but it's never been streaming anywhere. I believe you can rent it on Amazon and those places like Google Play and wherever else
Starting point is 00:43:43 you can rent things. And I think at some point this month it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's thi thi, it's thi, it's tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thoing. thoing, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th. But yeah, it's a, I think it'll be a really fun episode. I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, and we never do it. Had the soundtrack, it's a great horror-wrapped soundtrack. Like, who knew there was such a thing? So come back next week for that. And thanks for listening to another episode of Wearwolf Ambulance? Bye-bye. Ooh, that was spooky. Yeah, I'm working. I'm just trying to work.
Starting point is 00:44:22 I'm going to do a little focus group. Bye- off. I'm gonna do a little focus group. And bye-bye. Oh, that is good. Thanks. Maniacs are not dead pools, Savini's side you sat the pool. No way to make it be villains to fulfill reviews. Killing lights and let the face, killing the atmosphere, appearance I've cast in case.
