Starting point is 00:07:01 They shoot him from below. He's on a giant horse and he's doing his extremely baritone voice and he is like the voice of this movie, yeah. This is a film of baritone voices. Yeah. And also Daniel Kaluya, holy shit can he do an American accent. Well, Alan, I have to say I think that's because he's incredibly one note in this movie. He gets very little to do emotionally. Sure. He's almost bafflingly blank. Yeah, I think that's supposed to be like he is just this stoic cowboy character.
Starting point is 00:07:38 And I get that, but I feel like he's a dynamic actor and star of stage and screen, and we should treat him with the respect he deserves by letting him emote? So I know that I am a stand for Jordan Peel. Sure. I apologize in advance. Don't. But, so I think, like, to use another annoying comparison, I think he's almost like a jazz drummer where you're like, when he does let loose a few times
Starting point is 00:08:05 in this movie, like the hand clapping with Kiki Palmer when they're excited about something, or when he's like telling people to do a thing by raising his eyebrows, yeah. There's this like, oh shit, like he's tight enough that he unleashes these little things, and you're like, oh, that's acting. Because I do have a note that says, you know, he can act like a mothfucker. Yeah, I agree that he can act like a mothfucker. I think he's obviously meant to be a foil to Kiki Palmer's continuously over the top personality. And then there's all these awkward silences as a result of nobody wanting to yell. And then he's just like, all right, see you later. It is very good. And when he's like, oh, I have a horse just like that. And he starts saying, where did you get yours over top of him? I'm like that's very fucking funny.
Starting point is 00:33:25 And at this point I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to make of him of Jupiter. Yeah. Because because of the way he told the Gordy's home story in this like carny way when it was really clearly because we keep seeing him as a child and flashback too just being absolutely terrified. Yeah. See I took it as him feeling like he has some kind of connection with animals because Gordy was not going to attack him. Gordy came in for the exploding fist bum. Yeah. So he feels like he can connect with these creatures that are eating the horses. Yeah. Yeah. And I think that's sort of the same end of the spectra of what I'm like saying, like a similar thing of like it's still like he's still so focused
Starting point is 00:34:31 on that moment in time. Yeah, who wouldn't be? Yeah. For sure. I mean it's got to be life changing, like I can't imagine. Because it's like it's sort of like almost like this probably won't mean anything but like Dr. who level special effects which are just like super low budge, 70 special effects. But like then to have that little bit of just like viscera and gore in there is very good. Good.

In the other movie I'm just like oh this is an assassin that has showed up to kill you. It's an assassin or it's like some otherworldly creature. No it's fucking TMZ. Which may be a commentary on TMZ. I suppose so. Oh and, and they've also taken all of the arm flailing tube men and lined them. Well, I don't know what the point of them is just to catch its attention. No, it's, well, it's two-fold. It's to catch its attention and they can monitor its progress by watching them shut down. Okay so yes they've told Werner Hertzag that they want to capture the impossible and during all of this he goes we don't deserve the impossible and he starts walking out with the camera. And this has, like, this little Easter egg shot of when she slides in sideways on the motorcycle is a basically shot-for-shot remake of the scene in the anime Akira. Oh. When Kaneda is sliding on his motorcycle. Okay. And I saw an interview where someone was like, you did the Akira shot and he's like, I know. They let me get away with that.

Starting point is 00:58:34 You ready for this? Yeah. Brilliant. I'm gonna give this movie an eight and a half. Why? Because I think it is like, it's that thing where I get excited for people doing their artistic vision. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:56 And setting out, especially in like, big Hollywood being able to pull off an artistic vision. Mm-hmm. pull off an artistic vision. But then I think there are a lot of flaws in this movie that kind of, I don't know if they limit its audience or limited success as a storytelling narrative. Yeah. But like, the second time I watched it, knowing what to expect made it much more enjoyable. I could see that. The first time was like, me, I felt very me about it. And the second time I was like, okay, no, I get it. I, th it. I, th it. I, no, no, no, no, I get it. I th it. I'm not running to watch this movie again, but the second time I definitely liked it. I think it's on par with us having watched it a second time. Okay. Yeah. Which I think is also a movie that is flawed in a lot of ways, but I really appreciate the artistic aspect of it. Sure. How about you? I feel very mad about it.
Starting point is 01:00:18 I think it just wasn't what I expected, which is fine. I'm not big on aliens to begin with, which is weird because I love the ex-piles. But I'm an alien guy. I just, I don't like space. I guess I like space. I don't know. Alien movies are not going to be my go-to. They're not going to be my first choice. I'd rather watch people get ripped apart, right? Sure. By like, by like, like, regular terrestrial stuff. Right, just normal everyday shit. I think some of the themes are muddied. The idea of things being a spectacle, the idea of having control of an animal.
Starting point is 01:01:02 The idea of like, the fact that this creature is focused on a black-owned horse-training farm as a metaphor for how pervasive racism is or how, I don't know, the extensive racism somehow, you know what I mean? Yeah. I feel like it's more, the themes are more muddied for me than I expected. I, like, I feel like I've left the last two Jordan Peel movies, having more thoughtful discussion in my own head. Yeah, yeah. Where's this I was like, ugh.
Starting point is 01:01:37 You know, I don't know. Do you think it was the aliens that started that kind of mehness to it? Like, I just think it's not real cohesive. And maybe, and second viewing it would be. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm really just put off by the OJ performance, that's all. So I'm gonna give it a six. It just was not my favorite.
Starting point is 01:01:59 I think I could see why people would love it, but I just found it to be a bit of a slog. Sure. Yeah, and I'm just, and I was disappointed, you know? And I think if I'd seen it in a movie theater, I would have liked it a lot more just for the cinematography of it. Sure. And the sound design seems to be amazing. Yeah, totally.
