We're here this week to talk about the 1980-81 classic. It doesn't matter. Where our first werewolf film?

The howling? Joe Dante. Gremlin's guy. Perana guy. Yeah, so many good movies. This is, is this one of, I don't think this isn't one of them. I have to be honest. Right out of the gate.

Oh, well, here's the problem with this movie for me. I had to watch this movie. Like, I think this is a great setup. I can't wait to see where it goes. And that's like right when Bill has been bitten and Terry has just arrived at the colony and it's like, well, what's going to happen from here? Then I watched the second half. And I was like, tho' watched it again awake and I was like, no, this really just goes off the fucking rails. Like, it is nutbar. It goes bonkers.

This is like 1980, 1981? 81, yeah, I think 81 released, yeah. I feel like whoever wrote this, wrote the first half and then took like a very long cocaine break and came back like, Like it's just bonkers. It ended and I was like, uh-uh. It's written by John Sales. That was him doing a bunch of cocaine and then roaring. I thought it was a werewolf.

Maybe he became a werewolf in his blow usage. But he's written a bunch of indie darling films. He also wrote piranha and like some horror movies. He came out of the Corman school as well with Joe Dante. Interesting. Out of the gate, I have to say that when I think of this movie, I think of it as being funny. Do you? I do. I think it'sthis movie, I think of it as being funny. Do you? Yeah, I do.

I think it's got like slim pickens in it. He's the sheriff. He is the dude who rides the bomb out of the plane in Dr. Strangelove. No. He's just an old-timey country actor kind of guy who's just funny. to th I was watching it. It's not funny. No, it's really depressing.

Yeah, it's depressing and it's bananas. Also, I first tried to stream it on that link you sent me. And I kept being interrupted by that Danny Trejo Brady Bunch I stole it. I downloaded it. Literally sirens just started going off outside. Sorry Comcast. It's a very good quality that I found though. Oh, excellent. Yeah, it's great.

I'm sure at this, no one is getting any money from this. No, no one is getting any money from this. And Bill is dead, right? Bill, Bill died. He was married to ET's mom in this, right? I mean not in this, I mean in real life. Dee Wallace Ney Stone, yeah. She's lovely. I thought she was lovely. Yeah, she's great. She's in, uh... I feel like she deserved better than this, than the lines they gave her to read in this movie.

I love this movie, but yeah, I can understand not loving it. It's super weird, like. I think I just had high expectations from the first half, and then when the second half happened, I was like, this isn't what I thought. I think I like it because it goes so far off the rails. Oh, so far off the rails. And there's just a bunch of silly shit, too. Like, the first a brief plot summary, you all have seen this, and if you haven't,

you should see this, because we're gonna do spoilers. It's about a reporter who is for some reason going to meet a dude in a porn theater. No explanation of why. Yeah, he's just like a scummy dude. And it turns out a serial killer. And I guess that's that's that's that's that she's a serial killer. Is she trying to like scoop everybody else on this story? Karen, Karen, no. Put yourself first, you know?

You and your meatball husband. He's a meatball and a sweater. He's so honky. Do you think he's hunky? No, but he is 70s, he's 70s, good thing it's the 80s. That one sweater that he has, like, if you were to button it up would completely cover his head. Yes. And then he also wears like a chineal sweater later, which I was no shirt underneath. No. Oh, just rubbing on his weird marine core tattoo.

He's so muscular though. I was a very muscular thou? I was just surprised that's something. Yeah. The scene where he slaps her is like, you feel, you feel. You feel it. Also, he slaps her. There's so many bummers in this movie like that. All right, so she's going, trying to scoop everyone, meeting with this serial killer in a porn theater, where he forces her to fo fo fo fo fo fo She's also like just rubbed with Vaseline suddenly in this scene, like the entire, just wipe,

wipe, wipe, wipe. She's so sweaty. Yeah, it's very, I don't know. Our facial expressions get so like going, like going, like, going, like, going back and forth between sort of like erotic and terrified, like, it's a really, it's a really really...., I was watching that going, see you thought this was a comedy? At least had funny parts, huh? Yeah, all right, buddy. Your brain's not so good, is it? He tells her to turn around and look at him, and she turns around,

and we don't see what she sees. But then she ends up blocking all this out of her memory anyway. And then a cop comes in and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just and just the like just shooting at for no reason. I mean I guess he had a reason but shoot first and just like Waka Flaca says ask questions last. I don't know. Is that the first time we've quoted Flacco on this? That could be. Yeah I'm pretty stoked on that. When the one cop's trying to explain why the guy got shot and he's like I don't know, asked a quick draw a quick draw on this? Oh? Just like, oh, so even back then, huh? Yeah. So while Karen is meeting this guy, she's supposed to be wearing a wire, I guess, and it's supposed to be broadcast back to her news studio, where we meet her. He says something about, I just have the note here, it says, who knows maybe she's pregnant and then followed by a Japanese joke? This movie definitely feels like it should have been made in the, in like the 50s. Like the way they treat people this film. That actor is also in like Twilight Zone the movie and a bunch of, he's in the original invasion of the body snatchers too for more triv. yeah no I didn't even pick up on that like ten times I've seen this movie I just thought he was saying something on camera about like on the on camera shot of him yeah about wherewolves but maybe I was falling asleep he probably was and I was just coming this seat reminds me of Don of the dead because that's what it feels like to me yeah that's very and that's a Patrick Patrick Patrick Patrick Patrick a a a the the the the the the the the the the the. the. the. the. He's the head of the Grandpa Armies. You're right. He also has one of my favorite lines in this movie, which is later when it's revealed that he is a bad guy werewolf too. And he, Karen is in a room with all of the other the other, and he comes out and she runs up, and she's like, Doc! And he just goes, uh, no.

He totally shuts her down. Yeah, uh, no. So he has this colony where you send sad people, ostensibly? Yeah, people with, people with issues. Yeah, so Karen agrees to go to this colony with her husband Meatball Bill. She meets a woman who's straight out of D&D, Marcia. She's wearing like a leather boostier and like a spiked necklace and she has like the poofy bangs with the long hair. Yeah she does look like a model for like a

second edition drawing of like a rogue or something. The only note I have about her is D&D lady is mad. Marcia Quist? Wait, Quist? Yeah, she's Eddie's sister. How do you know? Uh, it's right here on the Wikipedia page. Oh, was it revealed in the movie? Yeah, the movie? Yeah, the movie?

Terry goes into his room and sees all of his drawings and his articles cut out and she's like, oh holy snap, this is where Eddie Quist was here because she realizes that he drew the painting of the area that they're in. howling at night and she's just fucking wandering around in the woods, like if she has just just had this very scary experience, why is anyone letting her walk around in the woods alone at night? Because of therapy? Mmapy. And Bill is automatically like DTF. He's just ready to go. Yeah. I mean, the insinuation is that she, now that she is like, had this traumatic experience, isn't given it up anymore.

And Bill just cannot deal with that, which is like, come on Bill. I know you were a quarterback or whatever. He tries to initiate and she's like you know after all I've been through I really can't right now. Fucker just rolls over is like oh whatever. By yeah. I wish the sheets had just started rustling after he was he on the Steelers the colors in that one. I have no idea I know I said something about Stanford but I don't know I don't know. I don't. Just a lot of things seem ill-planned in this movie, like the score, and it's also just kind of just kind of like a film like a the film th. th mean basically nothing. Do you know what I mean? It kind of fits in with that from Rosemary's baby, I really enjoyed the mundaneness of Satanism. And this is like, what if we were all just kind of like boring werewolves? Yeah, what if we had like a weird bureaucratic fight at the end about how we were gonna live our wherewolf lives? Yeah, with an old man demanding to kill humans. I, okay. John Caridine, love him. Let's talk briefly about werewolves. Okay.

I don't know much about wherewolves. I would say they're probably like my least favorite of the horror bad guys, despite the name of this show. These are not your typical werewolf, correct? Like they can change whenever they want, not just under the full moon. And they seem to have like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like to have like to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have like to have like to have like to does at the end. They use it for theatrical effect constantly in this movie. Yeah it's not like it's not like Lon Chaney Jr. and Wolf Man where like where it was a curse that was put upon him and he doesn't want to be involved right. No it's more of like that like the were wolf as badass sort of thing like yeah and it's funny because this came out the same year or at least being filmed the same time as a to..... to. to. to. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the to the the the the to be. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the w. the the the the the the their. their. So to compare those two werewolf movies and like, where that's definitely a curse that's

put upon him, like he does not want to be murdering people, he does not want to be what he is. And sometimes in this movie they turned people and sometimes they just killed them. Right. Why? I don't know. For sure, but and the also they look cool when they transform. I would like to talk about the transformation. Oh, this is Rob Boteen Special Effects. The guy from The Thing, and he worked on Star Wars, and he did a bunch of movies in the 80s, and now I think he works in real estate. It's a really long scene.

It's over three minutes. It is really long. Today I made a list of other things you could do in three minutes, that besides watch this, which is go to the bathroom appropriately wash your hands and then return to the TV, as I did. Microwave several hot pockets. Probably consume several hot pockets and actually probably digest several hot pockets. You can almost run a mile. The fastest mile ever run was three minutes and three te.

If you're Dwayne the Rock Johnson, you can set a world record by taking 105 selfies in three minutes. And if you're a person a person the, you can set a world record by eating six sugar jam donuts in three minutes without licking your lips. All the time it takes Eddie to transform it's so long. And I know they were probably like, these effects are so good. Yeah. But you got to know one to cut.

I think it was just, this is the one, the one, the one, the one, the one, the one, the one time we're gonna because it's the only time there's that much of a transformation in the movie except for when the hand the arm gets cut off and then it transforms back into a human arm. Oh yeah That seems really great. Well no because then Eddie transforms again later and I was like I do not have time to watch him do the barn scene, a couple of them transformed too. Yeah, they get the little, yeah, the little bladders. But yeah, this was the one that they're like, this is, this is all the money is going into this right here. It's just like very startling to have three minutes of something to have something.

their times where, you know, I've watched this movie a bunch, but I've never, like, sat down and been like, what's going on? Yeah, to critically watch the howling? And I was like, yeah, when this scene's going on, I was like, holy Jesus Christ, how do you do this when it in, the makeup artist? I would like to see that. Whoa! He looks like Iningo Montoya if he was in a metal band. You guys should look that guy up. I thought you would enjoy him.

Yeah, I do. He also looks a little bit just like your weird uncle, you know, like he did in the special features on the thing, he's got like a big part in that. And he's got this great nerd voice. He's like, oh, okay, okay, okay, all right. So, and it's so great, like, I've done jaw want to be to light it on fire. And I was like, okay, I guess, okay. It's like, it's so fun to watch. I do not get me wrong, the effects are great. Especially my favorite part is when his like upper jaw extends into like a wolf snout.

It's really good. It's just so long. There was a point during that, where I was like, how do they fit that in the guy's head? Oh, you're a fucking moron, Alan. How do they fit that in the guy's head? Can I give you my other moron realization during this film? Absolutely. This is for public consumption. This is just us, just between you and I, Katie, no one else is going to hear this. So the opening sequence when she's in a porn theater, I'd always assume that was taking place in Times Square.

It was just like it was just gross disgust it was just junkies and born theaters. I didn't know that. Now how'd Guy Ferrari get in there? Oh uh Giuliani. And I was like oh yes junkies porn shops. And the Southland is another name for California. Oh, I'm, I would, or for Los Angeles. To be fair, I had no idea, so I don't think that's an idiot moment. No, I just assumed it was a generic city time. Generic city time. in the porn theater, she's in a phone booth. And they're sort of like a Rosemary's Baby-esque. Yeah, totally. That guy is Roger Corman. Is it? Yeah. Oh, weird.

Because Joe Dante did a bunch of movies, Roger Corman. And the joke is he walks into the phone booth and immediately starts digging in the change to see if there's any money. It's so funny. I like that. I like when people make fun of their own cheapness. Speaking of having a lot of money, another one of my favorite lines in this movie is when Christopher goes to the gas station and the guys like, not all of us have enough money for a Mazda, some of us got to work for a living. What the fuck was that? It's so out of place. It's so weird. Why does he say that to him? I don't know? Are Maz Maz Maz Maz Maz Maz Maz Maz. So the movie ends with Marsha at a bar, like at a redneck bar. She is extremely out of place in that bar. Like she's dressed like a skinny Elvira and she's in like a honky-tonk basically.
