Starting point is 00:00:00 Should that vessel have gone out to sea with a broken engine? Of course not. I mean, of course not. Yeah, just stuck together with duct tape, right? Yeah. I don't know. It's above my pay grade. But you could have died. Hey, thanks for having me on, guys.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I think your show is really funny and stuff. I fucking love it. Thanks. Me, Madison, and Alex are all here in the Bahamas right now. I made both of them watch the show, and they both thought it was hilarious, too. Oh, awesome. That's great to hear. Well, I think that that's a great place to start for, I guess, joining us on the blower
Starting point is 00:00:56 is Chase from season four of Below Deck. Parsnips is the vessel we're sailing sailing on and the engine is held together by uh gum you're in the bahamas right now yeah i'm in nassau i'm actually with alex i'm with mads mads just left yesterday we're having a little bit of a getaway time so okay great i'm assuming you're working god son of a no i'm not working No, I just got one week left of freedom, and then I'm actually buying my own sailboat next week. So a lot of work just around the corner. We're all just kind of handing out together.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Oh, my gosh. You're buying your own sailboat? Yeah, I'm very excited. That sounds like such a headache. He's going to be the captain of his own vessel. No, I know. That's great, and I'm sure you're more than capable of handling that kind of responsibility but my god does that sound awful no i know i mean it's both you know it's gonna be exciting yeah you know that's the things to fix all right so let's get into it so hey uh chase if you don't
Starting point is 00:02:02 mind uh oh sorry pat pat can I just do this? Oh, sure. You know, he said, and I'm sorry I touched you so tenderly right there. You said that you've been listening to the show with the other cast members. So, you know that we call you C-Rats, and you might have heard me do impressions of you. So, I think that it's just really great that you got such a great attitude about the entire thing and you've been lovely throughout the entire season we're about to get into all the stuff from the first six episodes and uh how bad gary's been performing this season so go ahead pat well we always got to start off every interview with the most important
Starting point is 00:02:39 question vitally important extremely how'd you get on the show uh a happenstance so i i went into yachting for a few years after i graduated from university and had actually left the yachting industry i had come back home to do some sales i was helping my dad with his business and was just kind of doing the normal and really unhappy about it and waiting for something fun to kind of come and shake it up. And a casting agent found me, reached out to me through Instagram. And he just kind of looked me in my lap and said, hey, would you do this? You know, and a bunch of people in the industry, people know this. You know, I love the show.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I would do it again. I thought it was an amazing experience. But when I first got into the industry, a lot of people said, hey, don't go on the show. It'll hurt your chance of getting a job in the yachting industry, which is, you know, it's true and it's not true. Because although you get exposure, it's like, hey, we're getting lit up and pour up in a hot tub and making out with each other. It's not the most professional look. But since I had already left the industry and I was kind of in a dead end sales job and wanted to get get out and switch it up and get back on the water, I said, hell yeah, I'll do the shit, bro. Well, that brings me to my next question. Nikki Hodgson, a Baby Barnacle-
Starting point is 00:03:56 We're getting into Baby Barnacle questions this early. We are. Forgive me. This is Stuart Gunyan. He wants to know, you said you were going to retire at age 30. Oh yeah, that's right. That was. He wants to know, you said you were going to retire at age 30. Oh, yeah, that's right. That was such a crazy, insane thing you said. What is the plan here? Because if it's a good one, I might take that direction in my life. How are you going to retire at 30? What's the secret sauce? Look, I definitely don't blame you guys for making fun of me. I know there's a lot of people who say that, and it's a big goal.
Starting point is 00:04:29 But here's the plan, and not to be horned, but I haven't spent anything for the last six, seven years. So every single dollar I made from that stuff, and I've exclusively worked on charter yachts. I mean, I've worked on programs where you do a 12- day trip and it's a $13,500 a year each. And I just still have all the money. And I live in Charleston, South Carolina. I've poured any dollar I've spent, I made, I put into real estate. I've just sold four Airbnbs I had fixed up. All right. All right. I'm a licensed plumber and I kind of do all that on the side, and yachting just brings in the money to kind of fund all that.
Starting point is 00:05:11 But I've kind of just done it. I've just sold it all, and I'm buying my own sailboat, which has been like a six-year dream. So I don't know if I can retire forever, but I probably won't work for the next five years. Hey, look, if you do what you love, man. You never work a day in your life. So, okay.
Starting point is 00:05:32 You got to live for that. No. So, we need to, okay, so you're a shrewd investor. You got a good head on your shoulders. Hard worker. Hard worker. What do you do when the sea rats go out to dinner to get fucked up? Because that first question, how'd you get on
Starting point is 00:05:53 the show? It always births a horrifically boring answer. And yours was, I don't want to say no different. I mean, a casting agent reached out to you on instagram but you did bring up the fact that yeah this show could be bad for your career ultimately because um you know you see people blacking out right yeah the black yeah they're crying and yeah you have the semen and whatnot but um when you go out for these evenings what do you do like do you do you not chip in on the meal because you're trying to save i mean do what what's how do you remain frugal in sardinia yeah it's definitely not easy um i think we all did a pretty good job of taking turns and chipping in it's usually the junior crew gets the first couple meals it's like hey we've got a few seats, guys. You guys pick up this tab. The rookie wide receiver. Hi, it's big checks.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Now, is there a little part of you, when you guys get handed that tip money at that tip meeting, and you're like, I got $2,200 in my pocket. And how do you feel the next morning when you just burn $600 at a restaurant that you can't even remember anymore because you were so drunk? Does that happen often yeah uh i don't know quite 600 but yeah that the remorse the day after is a real thing
Starting point is 00:07:13 not just so that's just the industry you know there's so many guys and girls will buy a rolex or louis vuitton the next day and you're back to being broke and it's just this fucking hamster wheel of being poor and playing live every day like it's your last right right right sea rat way um okay so i i think that we can transition into the blood feud between you and your boss gary which i don't know perhaps you guys have healed but um it would seem to me as though chase is a little bit different than you know the common frequenters of the yachting world and that he has a plan of sorts so perhaps um i don't know chase's standard of excellence is getting shit on by gary um and and chase is having like a little bit of an existential panic about it because Gary's not
Starting point is 00:08:05 doing it for any rhyme or reason. Gary's just in an identity crisis. He's lashing out. Let's hear what Chase has to say about that. All right, let's back up a little bit. Yeah, that's bad hosting. That's bad hosting. So Nikki Hodgson wants to know, do you think Gary's bad attitude or how he's behaving towards you? Do you think the start of that was because he missed that first charter? Does that have anything to put into play with this? I don't, not entirely,
Starting point is 00:08:33 but it definitely has a part. I think it's the perfect storm of a lot of things. Okay. Okay. So, well, I don't want to jump ahead cause we kind of want to know where Gary is now. All right.
Starting point is 00:08:44 So, uh, Luis Giovanni wants to know, why did you give up so quickly once Gary had announced that he was, uh, into Mads? Oh, I, I just didn't really give a shit. I, to be honest, like we had a long conversation about it, I mean, it just wasn't a winning scenario for me. People say don't screw the crew. It's a true thing. You don't want to shit where you eat. And look, I just spent the last couple of days with Madison on vacation,
Starting point is 00:09:17 and we're close friends now. I'm not one of these guys who has to get off with a girl just to get along with them. Are you saying you're not a sex addict? No no i don't think i'm a total sex addict now let no listen if your boss and your and your co-worker are both vying for the same girl it's just not a good idea to fucking give a shit yeah yeah playing it smart wise wise words now listen we we have, I wouldn't say that we love Gary, but Gary is an important part of this show. And Gary's been, you know, Gary's been Gary. You know, there's nothing to hate that much. But this season, he's just, he's not having a great performance.
Starting point is 00:09:59 And you seem to be a target for all of that resentment. I don't know. Well, let's, so Laurie Schriegel wants to know, what was the major issues with Gary towards you? Where was this coming from? Do you have any insight into that? All right. I'm going to go into a long-winded answer. Please.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Look, just to say, Gary and I are cordial. And I really have a lot of respect for Gary. I saw him in LA like a month ago. We played a great game of pool. We get along. And I understand Gary is on this below-deck totem pole, and he makes great TV, and he's a big part of the reason people watch the show I'm on,
Starting point is 00:10:34 not because of me, but because of Gary. Yeah. He can be a royal asshole. Yeah. I think everyone knows it. I respect Gary, and I know that he knows a lot more than i do about the yacht industry he works on parts full year round he's got all this experience but it was this perfect storm of you know alex and i came in and we kind of established a workflow
Starting point is 00:10:56 before gary showed up because he had covid and then gary wants to like i guess he shows up and maybe he's intimidated by us i don't know why you would be. I'm a pretty dorky, unassuming guy. But we could sense that he was intimidated and that he just wanted to knock us down off of the ladder a little bit. Yeah, yeah. Maybe it's what he cares about, but I have no idea why he came out on me so much. I know that I can be a little much to handle. be why he came out on me so much. I know that I can be a little much to handle. I know that sometimes I run my mouth and I have so much energy trying to stay moving and trying to get all the
Starting point is 00:11:30 work ethic stuff done that I can come off as a lot, but I just tried to help and he was mad from the get go. You have this unique breed of, or brand of optimism that like you just have this, this kind of lust for good work and a good day. And, and I can see how, I mean, get away from me. I could, I could see how people experience, but it's, there's nothing malicious coming from you at all. So Gary shouldn't have been anywhere near his, his hate. Don't listen to Dylan. Yeah. Don't listen to me. What are you talking about? Chase is the great coworker that you want on one of these vessels. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Okay. So, uh, Katie, Laura, Alexander asked, Gary said, I'm watch what happens live.
Starting point is 00:12:15 He'd never work with Alex again. Yeah. Can you give us some insight to that without spoiling the rest of the Don't spoil anything. Cause we want to keep this in the show. man you know i can't i can't speak for why gary would say that i have a couple ideas but i can't really say anything just because i don't know i think there's a couple reasons why but i would say that i'd work with everyone else again you know there's different there's days throughout the season that i want to kill everybody and I say, oh, I would never work with you again.
Starting point is 00:12:45 But looking back, I don't think that he actually means that. Well, speaking of killing, let's talk about Captain Glenn. Captain Glenn, what's up? The women of the night. Yes. You guys are spot on. Yes, exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:00 No, no, we know we're spot on. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. We appreciate it. But was Captain Glenn hands-on with the teams, more hands-on than other captains you've worked with? Because Captain Glenn's MO has been he just lets department heads
Starting point is 00:13:24 do their thing. Hire the he just lets department heads do their thing hire the right people let them do their thing one of the reasons why there's so much turmoil with the department heads is because i think that glenn is trying to make a transition in his life maybe he's trying to not slaughter as many people and he's trying to be more active in the yachting world or something but his involvement in your guy's work seems to be causing a little bit of friction. Was he kind of lording over some of the minutiae of your work? I've been seeing this a lot on Twitter, that he's micromanaging or something.
Starting point is 00:13:58 I have to come to the guy's rescue. He's one of the best captains. He's really got a good best of it. The Bahamanian internet is too bad because I think you were going to give him some props. So we do want to hear it. But now you're frozen. There's a storm coming through there, I think.
Starting point is 00:14:17 There he is. I'm sorry, do you mind starting from the top regarding Glenn and your defense of him? Can you guys hear me? Yeah, we got you. Awesome. I think he's got a good balance. He really lets us go. And he also is there to kind of like push the narrative just a little bit, push the envelope, say, hey, I think we could change it like this. Look, you got to think, yeah, he gives us feedback at the TIP meetings, but the guy only gives us feedback at the TIP meetings. For three days while we're on charter, we don't hear anything from him, positive or negative at all.
Starting point is 00:14:50 He's there to help a little bit, but he's mostly just kind of in the background. That's how a captain should be. Drive the boat, sail, make sure we're all safe. And then at the TIP meeting, he gives us a little feedback. I don't think it's too much at all. Okay. So do you think, and this is Brianna Karen asks, do you think when Daisy got very upset at the tip meeting, you were there, obviously,
Starting point is 00:15:11 do you think Glenn handled that correctly? I guess the question would be, do you agree more with the sea dog Colin, as opposed to kind of Daisy's perception of how that tip meeting went? How did you take it? It's tough. I see both sides. Let me tell you, when it first happened, I had no idea where it came from. I had no idea why Daisy was upset. So if you look at it like that, Colin might not have known. Glenn might not have known. If you're watching the show and you see all these moments where people let Daisy down and Daisy's getting called all over the place, but we didn't see that. I didn't know that Gary was sitting on his ass not helping.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I didn't know why she was upset. I didn't know that she felt attacked. So I think that they handled it as best as they could. But I definitely see where she's coming from. She got worked this last charter. Do you think Gary could have helped out more? Of course. I mean, look, he's got scenes of himself sitting in the bridge doing nothing.
Starting point is 00:16:08 I just didn't have him for me for six weeks. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like Bill's saying, if you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean. Yeah. A lot of people, they get this level of authority. Like they become the boss, and they think that that means that they can just chill in the bridge. But no, it should be the opposite.
Starting point is 00:16:26 It should be helping other department heads, especially on charter. It should be that way, but people can really justify a lot of lazy behavior because management is the hardest of all the work. All right, a couple of fun questions. Should that vessel have gone out to sea with a broken engine? Of course not. I mean, of course not. Yeah, just stuck together with duct tape, right?
Starting point is 00:16:51 Yeah. I don't know. It's above my pay grade. But you could have died. I mean, I honestly, I know it's stuck together, but we'll just let the story develop from here on. Okay, all right. Beautiful, beautiful. All right, Katie, this is a fun question.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Katie wants to know if you've ever hooked up with a fellow person in the below deck world. Never, never. Charter guess? I haven't been so lucky. I'm too big of a dork, apparently. Oh. Chase, you're lucky.
Starting point is 00:17:28 And let's say this. You're a handsome man. I mean, good God. Yeah, you got to watch the video, peeps. Do you got a little hair on your face? It's just the sun is kissing him. I mean, he's so tan. I mean, he's cut up, I bet, too.
Starting point is 00:17:44 All right. Next question. Okay. kissing him i mean he's he's so tan i mean he's he's cut up i bet too um all right next uh question okay uh kath crace wants to know did you feel left out of the man bun club yeah because you're the only guy on that well yeah you looked you looked ridiculous not having a man bun chase look i didn't get the fucking memo okay i showed up clean shaven i had gillette still on my face when i showed up yeah yeah i could possibly have i didn't win it with any of the below deck ladies because i showed up to the fabio contest and you know i just didn't get the invite yep yep you look like a marine well can i ask you can i ask him something really quickly and you know this is the issue with you being too far forward we can't pick up on visual cues like if i want to ask him something
Starting point is 00:18:30 you're up here you know all right can we talk sailing sounds it just looks awful um what how how dangerous is like like did a knife fly at you what what is it like below deck when i'm sure you're above deck a lot of the time when you're sailing but killed there too what is the the destruction that is going on below deck when you guys sail i i mean it's just it's turmoil yeah glenn is out you guys are on it yes there's just no there's no heads up keep in mind this is my first sailing yacht ever so you know i've gone sailing i've worked on motor yachts but the combo is ridiculous and it's like two minutes maybe warning before we're at a 45 degree angle it's just not enough time to lock everything up in stone you know you're in the middle of cooking a fucking meal somebody's asleep nobody gets word
Starting point is 00:19:31 of it and then it's all hell breaks loose i don't get it on the boat why imagine if you're paying hey honey yeah can you believe we're paying for this a A knife almost took my eye out. All right. Well, we, yeah, we got a couple more. It's beautiful. All right. Meredith Smith wants to know, this is more just like living in those small quarters. Like, how do you work it out with your roommate? Like with things like going to the bathroom?
Starting point is 00:19:59 Like, is this stuff kind of worked out before I had a time? That was a terrible question. That was such a bad question. Don't eat in the bed or don't take a dump when I'm sleeping. Things like that. It's just that such, all right. It's a practical question. Just the reality, we spend such little amount of time in our cabins.
Starting point is 00:20:19 You know, like I think national rest days say that you're not supposed to work more than 12 hours a day and you're supposed to have a two-hour break with rest. That never happens in the yachting industry. Newsflash, we work 16, 18-hour days. That's so crazy. So we're just not allowed for it to be an issue, and we're all pigs. Right, right, right. All right, this is a fun question, and maybe we'll wrap it up this way.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Oh, actually, Leslie Harlow wants to know, how beat up is that boat? question and maybe we'll wrap it up this way oh actually leslie harlow wants to know how beat up is that boat oh i hope this doesn't get me in trouble it's a beautiful boat and i love the boat but you can definitely tell it's been through a lot of charter seasons yeah um there's more to come season we have some serious boat problems yeah i can't wait to see that all right last question this is a really fun one and, you've been an absolute delight. Yeah, Chase, you've been awesome. This is a game played by the Sea Rats, usually when they're in the van,
Starting point is 00:21:11 either leaving the venue or going to the venue. Mary F. Kill. I hope this is men and not women. Gary Glenn Collin. Thank God. Mary F. Kill. Gary Glenn and Collin? Yeah. Obviously, we'd have to make love to alex and and this seems this seems obvious chase but there is a kill or be killed element here i hope you're not going to
Starting point is 00:21:33 marry glenn because that's a death wish so but go ahead i just want to tell you guys this is really high level journalism yeah yeah thank you beautiful program um yeah i guess you know i guess i'll shag colin because that's what everyone on twitter says yeah i gotta kill before he gets me yeah now in the middle and oh no that means i'm marrying gary i gotta rethink some things yeah um oh god yeah killing Oh, God. Yeah, killing Glenn. I'll marry Colin and I'll screw Gary. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And thank you so much for joining us. What a perfect way to end the interview.
Starting point is 00:22:14 So, Chase, we got a fun season ahead of us, right? We're not just going to hit this low where it just goes down. We got some more exciting things to see. See, again, I was wrapping up the interview. That's a bad question. He's not going to say there's going to be a lull, Patrick. My fucking God. Chase. Honestly, God, Chase. Honestly,
Starting point is 00:22:27 honestly, let me answer this. I am a fan of the show. I've been watching the show for years. I mean, this is my aunt and uncle's favorite show,
Starting point is 00:22:34 The Loading Sam. And so I know what makes a good season. I've watched y'all show for a while. It's a damn good season, guys. It doesn't lull.
Starting point is 00:22:42 It just builds. It gets way more hectic than what people think. There's a lot of stuff that guys. It doesn't lull. It just builds. It gets way more hectic than what people think. There's a lot of stuff that you didn't see on the trailer. This shit is crazy. All right. I'm excited for it. Hey, Pat, great question.
Starting point is 00:22:53 I apologize. That's okay. Chase, thank you so much for joining us. Plug away. Where can people follow you? What do you want people to do to you, for you? Go ahead. How can they book your sailboat?
Starting point is 00:23:10 Shameless plug. I got a sailing channel. It starts next week. It's called Chasing Grace. It's me and my winter dog, Charlie. We're sailing around the world, five-year circumnavigation. A lot of people from the Below Deck cast will be joining me. So tune in.
Starting point is 00:23:23 It's on YouTube. Say it one more time. Chasing Grace. Chasing Grace. Or find me on Instagram. The link's in my bio. Okay. Go there.
Starting point is 00:23:34 All right. Amazing. Chase, thank you so much for joining us. Either way, go back to your normal life. Who cares about me? No, no, no. Go follow him. You've been awesome.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Thank you for being such a good sport we really enjoy talking to you man thanks for doing this chase thank you guys all right godspeed you I'm
