Starting point is 00:00:00 When I started podcasting, an online store was the furthest thing from my mind. Now I'm selling my group coaching on the regular and it is just so easy. All because I use Shopify. Come on this journey with me. Each week when you join me, we are going to chase down our goals, overcome adversity and set you up for a better tomorrow. Hi and welcome back. I'm so glad you up for a better tomorrow. I'm ready for my closeup. Hi and welcome back.
Starting point is 00:00:28 I'm so glad you're back here with me this week. Okay. So this is interesting. There have been a number of ideas in my mind swirling around. And of course it's for you. I know that much. I'm like, this is for my show. These are for my people.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Okay. It's interesting to me because why isn't this stuff taught in school, first and foremost, I get so annoyed about it, to like, I cannot be the only person figuring all this stuff out, right? Like there's, maybe this is like the whole quest that everybody's on in life is to figure out life and how you're really supposed to do it
Starting point is 00:01:03 and what are the hacks and tips and tricks? I don't know, does everyone think like that? Like you need to write it and let me know because this is definitely how I think. But I'm starting to figure things out and it's interesting because the past decade I can see like all these piecemeal moments, right? Like breadcrumbs along the way,
Starting point is 00:01:20 steering you to the right path. I'm sure you've had these moments in your life. Like you're not sure, wait, I don't know how these dots are connecting but I know I'm on the right path. I'm sure you've had these moments in your life. Like you're not sure, wait, I don't know how these dots are connecting, but I know I'm on the right path. I don't have it figured out yet. Clearly I still don't have it figured out, but I'm so much closer now.
Starting point is 00:01:33 It's crazy. And it's sort of all coming together. So I wanna share with you, it's not final. And maybe this is my next book. Maybe this is like the roadmap I'm just gonna hand you, but I know it's gonna help you because it's certainly helping me in wild, wild ways. So it's gonna help you too.
Starting point is 00:01:50 I just know it is, right? And if it doesn't, I get that. You're not on the same wavelength I'm currently on. That's cool too. And definitely take what works for you, leave the rest, put your own recipe for success together, okay? But I'm gonna give you what's working for me and what I've been figuring out over the last decade.
Starting point is 00:02:07 That's sort of wild because both of my books come into play in a really big way. This podcast comes into play in a big way. Like if you look at all the breadcrumbs, like the episodes, the conversations, just it's kind of all leading to this, in my opinion, in my humble opinion. Okay. So one of the things, all right, I'm going to start off here.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I'm looking at a piece of paper. I took like all these massive notes last night before I went to bed because I was thinking about this and I woke up thinking about it because your girl's a nut. But one of the things that I was thinking about for me personally, and I understand this might not be for everybody. So I'm not, I am not here as your bro telling you how to live your life. Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:02:49 What I'm suggesting to you is like what I've learned, what I'm seeing that works for other people, what I'm seeing that works for me and the recipe and how it comes together for success and how it unlocks things. That could be unique to me and certain people, maybe universal. I don't know, I'm just giving it to you. You do what you want with it, okay? But figure out what works for you for sure. And don't just take what someone else tells you, like test and try, see what lands with you. And here's what's interesting. What you might find, because this is what
Starting point is 00:03:18 I found, is that years ago, pieces of this landed with me for sure, because I was doing it. But some of it didn't and now I'm at a different place in my life I have different experiences I've gone through different things I felt called to do different things I've met different people and because of all of those moments in time I think differently now so I'm open to different things interesting life is so wild weird okay here we go so one of the cool things that I wrote last night because a decade ago I wouldn't have written this is the core and the foundation
Starting point is 00:03:52 and the basis for everything in my life is the foundation of my faith in God. Right, so my relationship with God, my belief in God, my faith, that is really the cornerstone and bedrock of everything. I was missing that for a long time. I grew up Catholic, always believed in God. However, having a difficult childhood, going through divorce, there was different moments in my life where I moved further away from God. And I can see that looking back now. And there's moments of mystical moments
Starting point is 00:04:23 when God spoke directly to me, like when I found out I was pregnant, right? So there's, it's interesting because there's these highs and lows, highs and lows. I can look back as an observer on my life and I encourage you to do that. And again, some people will say, Heather, don't preach about God. You're not a pastor or whatever. I get those messages too. Shout out. Thanks for your opinions.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Appreciate them. Handing them right back to you. I'm going to do what I like. So here's the thing and I encourage you to do the same. Thank everyone for their limiting beliefs and go ahead and rock on with what your thoughts and your plan is. Okay. So here's the thing is that for me, I was missing God as the foundation of my life. That is unshakable in my opinion. Now, some people might say you can be spiritual and it can be about the universe. Some people can say it can be about higher power. It could be, you know, you don't have to be
Starting point is 00:05:09 Christian. Like I said, I grew up Catholic. Like it can be, it's your relationship with God. So it's spiritual, it's a religion, it's the universe. However it is for you. I'm telling you, I'm Christian. So for me, it's that foundation and faith in God. Okay, putting that out there. I am not telling you to do that. I'm just sharing with you what's worked for me. And I'll also give you this color. I didn't get very close to God again until my son went through a horrible time during the pandemic. So it was that awful low moment of watching my son be depressed that started changing everything for us.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Didn't know at the time, had no idea. I was just there to uplift my son. I put everything in my life on hold and just leaned in hard to like, how can I support my son? And my son is the one that looked at me one day and said, mom, we've got to get closer to God. In turn, I reached out to a good friend who's very involved with churches.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And I just said, where do we go? And he said, view church. And we started going to food church. And that's almost four years ago now. It's a journey, right? It really is a journey, which is wild. You don't have to have it all figured out today. I certainly don't. I certainly didn't four years ago. Holy cow. We were lost in many ways. And the pandemic was such a bad time for us. Gosh. I feel so grateful sitting here today. Oh my gosh. Life is so incredibly different.
Starting point is 00:06:26 No matter what challenges you're facing right now, know it is temporary and it will get better. That is something I want you to know for sure. Meet a different guest each week. Bring it on to the table. Confidence created. When you think about businesses growing their sales beyond forecast, like Feastables by Mr. Beast or even a legacy business like Mattel,
Starting point is 00:06:50 sure, you think about a product with demand, a focus brand, and influence-driven marketing. Starting point is 00:10:03 Embrace your fall aesthetic with Jenni Cain. I asked you to try to find your passion. Okay, so my foundation is my faith in God. And that wasn't the case, as I just mentioned four years ago. Okay, so once you have your foundation, whatever that may be for you, but it's gotta be unshakable, I believe, right? Because it didn't work as well when it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Okay, so that's one. Two, and I don't know if I have these in the right order yet, that's why I'm not like printing out a plan for you. I'm sharing this with you. I'm super interested to hear your feedback as always. So hit me up at Heather Monahan on Instagram, on LinkedIn, my website, heathermonahan.com. I wanna hear back from you.
Starting point is 00:10:44 I wanna hear what you think. Okay, so next, the next thing that really came to me was this belief and this knowing, and this really goes back to God. This goes back to the Bible. And no more fear, no more worry. For a long time, specifically during the pandemic, I was full of fear, full of worry.
Starting point is 00:11:01 It was making me physically sick, losing my hair. I broke out in a rash. It was terrible watching my son get so depressed. It was making me physically sick, you know, losing my hair. I broke out in a rash. Like it was terrible. Watching my son get so depressed. It was a really bad time. What I have now, which is different, is my relationship with God, which is, as I've mentioned, it's just like this foundation unshakable belief
Starting point is 00:11:17 and knowing that things are gonna be okay and that we're divinely being led to where we're meant to be to go. When you think like that, when you start believing that, that everything's actually rigged in your favor, that when one door closes, a better one opens, suddenly you're excited to get up in the morning, even if it is challenging in that moment, right?
Starting point is 00:11:35 Like my life is far from perfect right now. And I'm dealing with some things that are, you know, somewhat like of a headache. They look like I'm like, oh gosh, nobody can be excited to deal with that this week. But you know, somewhat like of a headache, they look like, like, oh, gosh, nobody can be excited to deal with that this week. But you know what? Because I have this belief that I'm being divinely led and that I'm on the right path, that I'm living my purpose driven life. I know things are rigged in my favor, that it is going to be great.
Starting point is 00:11:57 I just don't know how it's all going to play out. And I'm OK letting go and living in the uncertainty. That's a huge seismic shift. When I was younger, I like, I wanted to control everything. No, that is not the answer. I guess it's called the law of detachment. And it's about letting go. Gosh, that's so powerful.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And I just had this like incredible memory that just popped into my head. I was spinning on a rooftop because it was during the pandemic. We couldn't be inside. And I remember the teacher was talking about, you have to just let go, stop trying to white knuckle everything
Starting point is 00:12:28 and choke everything, just let go. And that was a really scary time for me because I was letting go of a relationship, I was letting go of fears, I was letting go of another version of myself in order to step into uncertain to try to figure out what the future held. And that was huge for me, huge.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Maybe it could be huge for you too. Okay. And again, you don't have to have all the answers today. I'm just sharing with you what worked for me, but I'm telling you that's so good. And I want it to work for you too. Okay. I wrote my book, Overcome Your Villains, my second book.
Starting point is 00:12:58 You know that it's all about removing negative people, places and things from your life and thoughts, even the thoughts in your own head, right? So overcome your villains is a huge part about this recipe to success, removing negative people, places, and things. And that can be jobs, that can be toxic work environments, that can be peers at work, that can be the make-believe friends that really aren't your friends, a frenemy, right?
Starting point is 00:13:21 Like anyone that's bringing your vibe down, limiting all interaction with them or cutting them out of your life completely is going to open up opportunity for you to bring positive people into your life, attract places that you're supposed to be going, things you're supposed to be doing, get rid of this path that you're on that it was what other people told you to do so you can get the path that God has meant for you. Like, oh my gosh, remove the negative people, places and things from your life and watch yourself take off.
Starting point is 00:13:48 Overcome Your Villains, such a great book. If you haven't read it yet, go get it. I do the audio version, you need it. Okay, that's another step. Another step, ready? Find your purpose in calling. And I get people are like, that's so big, how do you do that?
Starting point is 00:14:01 During this whole messy path along this way of like, listen, me getting fired. That was a massive, it wasn't rejection. It was a massive redirection to what I was meant to be doing, which is I'm meant to be here sitting with you today. I meant to be taking stages, speaking life and belief into people. I was speaking at Northeastern University last week and right before I was going to go on and it's so funny, I'm going to do a post about it this week, right before I was supposed to go on, I saw that they had
Starting point is 00:14:29 this big board up and it said Heather Monahan, two-time bestselling author, top 50 keynote speaker. And then it said I was speaking about sales strategies. And yeah, I was a sales leader in corporate America for 25 years. I can speak about sales strategies, leading sales teams, leadership in business ad nauseam, right? I don't need notes. I can just get up and do it.
Starting point is 00:14:49 I did it for so long. However, I looked around that room and I thought to myself, that is not the message these people need to hear right now. I felt like something much larger than me was speaking into me. This is not the message you need to bring forth today. I trust myself now so implicitly. I want you to trust yourself too.
Starting point is 00:15:08 My intuition is so strong. And because I act on my intuition, I trusted even more. So yes, a lot of people would say that's crazy to change your talk right before you're going to go on. But I believe in me. And I knew the people that were there that brought me in to speak believe in me too, right?
Starting point is 00:15:21 And so when you feel that sense of belief, when you're not surrounded by negativity, when you're not surrounded by naysayers, but champions, you believe in yourself more. I took that stage and I said, Oh boy, giddy up and here we go. I am not giving the talk that everybody thought I was going to give today, including myself. And here's why there's one voice and opinion in your life. They'll always matter. And that is your own. When your heart speaks to you, listen and act and you will hear it more and more and
Starting point is 00:15:51 more. And it will set you on that right path. I said, I want to start off today with two stories that I feel like are so important for you to hear. And I got into these two stories and really the bottom line was this, that the message I was bringing forth was a couple of things. You need to just go bigger and you need to have faith and you need to have hope. And when other people tell you your ideas aren't going to work, that's OK.
Starting point is 00:16:10 And you can thank them for their limiting beliefs, but you got to stay on your path and listen to your truth, regardless of what is the truth for anyone else. And there are millions of people in the world that told me I was crazy. Seven years ago when I got fired and I decided to go to work for myself. Everyone told me to wait out my non-compete and go back to the industry I had expertise in. And today I'm so glad I didn't. But it's a constant battle, right? Like, obviously, that would be the easy thing. I have way more expertise, 25 years of experience and expertise and network in that arena. I only have seven years in this new one.
Starting point is 00:16:45 Right. So it's harder when you're starting out. But one thing that's cool is when you find your way and you know you're on your purpose driven path, where path where you're meant to be. Suddenly doors open for you unexpectedly that wouldn't have opened if you weren't on that right path. So finding your purpose and calling is huge. And there's a knowing about it. There's a certainty about it.
Starting point is 00:17:06 It doesn't happen on day one though. I'm gonna tell you this, seven years ago, I didn't feel this way. When I wrote my first book, I didn't feel this way. I started feeling this way a couple of years ago when I wrote my second book, right? And maybe if you've been following me on the journey on the show, if you've been with me on the show,
Starting point is 00:17:18 you've seen the evolution over the last five years as the show has gone on. I think I've seen it for sure. I know I've gotten messages from some of you that you've seen it too, right? The more stages I take, the more certain I feel, the more partnerships are coming together for me that I had dreamt about, prayed about,
Starting point is 00:17:34 but had a sense and calling that these were gonna happen and now they are. Like all these things are coming together now. If success was easy, everybody would have it, right? Like if it was on day one, I just flipped the switch and it happens, that's not real. Maybe it's real for you. That has not been the case for me,
Starting point is 00:17:51 but there's a sense and this knowing and this belief that I am on the right path and I want you to find that path. And it starts with letting go of what's not for you. You're never going to be able to grab greatness if you hold onto mediocrity. And for a long time, I was holding on to mediocrity in my personal relationships, in my business relationships, in the work that I was choosing to do.
Starting point is 00:18:11 I wasn't growing, I was stagnant. You've got to let go of average to grab great everywhere in your life. Let go of it. Okay, so find your purpose and your calling, and that's a process, right? Know you are worthy, and one of the ways you can do that is by investing in yourself. Okay, when you are full of self doubt, you are never going to reach your potential. So
Starting point is 00:18:31 you're not really going to find your purpose. You're not going to really live your calling. You're not going to be full of belief and knowing you're going to be full of fear and worry, right? That was me for years. As you stay locked into lack of self worth, you're not going to really reach your potential and unlock this whole plan that I'm trying to describe to you. So doing that work on yourself, getting rid of the negative people around you, stepping into things you're actually good at, right? Like a fish is never going to be great at climbing up a tree.
Starting point is 00:18:56 So the fish is going to think they suck if they think their job is to climb up a tree. Someone dumps them in the ocean and suddenly they can swim. They're like, wait, I'm great at this. You got to find your place. Like where's your place? What are you great at? Everyone's great can swim. They're like, wait, I'm great at this. You gotta find your place. Like, where's your place? What are you great at? Everyone's great at something. Find your calling, find your purpose. As you start doing the things you're actually meant to be doing,
Starting point is 00:19:12 you'll start dropping the self doubt and start embracing your self worth. One of the greatest ways I've seen people take off around self worth, it's the biggest seismic shift I've ever seen for anyone is when you invest in yourself. It's like making the statement to the universe, to the world, to everyone, I am worthy, I am worth it.
Starting point is 00:19:31 And I actually just got a note from one of my clients who has been on a personal journey the last few months. She invested in herself to come into my coaching program and things just came together for her three months in. And she sent me this note and said, it really started the day, Heather, I pulled the trigger and invested in myself and signed up for your program.
Starting point is 00:19:47 It doesn't have to be my program, it can be for anything, right? Like I just signed up for a coaching program. I guess it was eight months ago. I wanted to learn more about manifesting. I didn't really know about it. And so I spent a ton of money to take an online course that I can go back and just replay and watch the videos
Starting point is 00:20:03 when I have the time to do it. And I haven't done it all yet, but it's been super interesting. And it was just another way to say like, I am worthy, I am worth investing in myself, and you're worth investing in yourself too. So whatever that looks like for you, let go of the self doubt,
Starting point is 00:20:17 start owning that you are worthy. And as you start doing that, you start vibrating at a higher level, you start attracting better people to you. And when you are a champion for yourself, when you see your self worth, everybody else will too. Okay. Meditate and meditate not only just to get peace and clarity, but meditate on that future version of yourself. This is huge.
Starting point is 00:20:37 And I've been doing this a lot lately is like future casting, writing out, what does my future look like? What does it feel like? That's another super, like who are the kind of people that are gonna be in my life when I'm there? And then starting to get into those rooms now, which I've been doing a lot more. I've been getting into rooms with women, selling companies for 300, 400, 500 million.
Starting point is 00:20:56 I hadn't been in rooms like that before. The more you expose yourself to the knowledge and people that are doing the things that you wanna do in the future, the more real it is for you today. Get in those rooms. That's why it's so important to get into a community of like-minded people who are champions for you, pushing you to go from more holding you accountable
Starting point is 00:21:16 and who have done the things that you want to do. But meditating on that future version of yourself daily is super powerful. I actually used the Joe Dispenza meditation. It's so, so powerful and it works really well for me. There's hundreds, thousands, millions of them out there, but I'm just letting you know the one that I've been using. Okay, write out your goals and dreams as in the present tense, write them on paper, right?
Starting point is 00:21:40 I don't just put them on my computer. I write them down. It's cathartic. It like imprints on your brain, your soul, your heart, everything. Write them out, feel them as if they've already happened and write them as I am statements. I am as one of the most powerful beginnings to any sentence there is. Right. It's in the Bible. I mean, this is going back to it's fact, guys.
Starting point is 00:21:59 OK, so like your I am statements, own them, write them down, read them daily. Practicing gratitude. This is so powerful, so incredible. The more we spend time practicing the things we are grateful for, the happier we feel, the more blessed we are, the more we attract other blessings to us. In the morning, there are plenty of days that my son is stressing me out because he's running late. He didn't get his uniform together.
Starting point is 00:22:21 His food isn't ready. Like, I'm making a shake for him. And it wasn't the flavor he wanted, like all these first world problems. And I have to center myself and just start thanking myself for having a healthy son, practicing gratitude that my child knows what he wants in life, like trying to see, shift the perspective and get back to gratitude. Even though it might not seem easy at the moment,
Starting point is 00:22:44 we can laugh at ourselves and instead practice gratitude perspective and get back to gratitude, even though it might not seem easy at the moment, we can laugh at ourselves and instead practice gratitude for all the goodness that we actually do have. Someone said to me, you know, you've got millions of problems until your health becomes one and then you've got one problem. So just being grateful every day for our health, being grateful for today, for our life that we woke up that we're here, being grateful today that the sun just rose and there's so much beauty all around us so much to be grateful for always and write those things down.
Starting point is 00:23:12 I've been doing this a lot lately the past month, which is I used to have a gratitude journal and I've like been bringing myself back to it and not even like intentionally just kind of started happening. I was just having these really beautiful moments and I'm like, gosh, I don't want to forget these because so often we forget. And I've been writing them down, the more I'm doing it, the more incredible things are happening. Write down what you're grateful for.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Maybe not daily, but at least a few times a week. Okay, this is a powerful one. Feel as though you already have the things that you know you want, that you envision for your future and just know that you will have them. I don't know when, I don't know how, that's irrelevant. Nobody knows how or when. Let go of that, that goes back to that law of detachment
Starting point is 00:23:50 and instead just embrace like, I know I'm taking these biggest stages, I know I'm partnering with the biggest people in the world, I know that I'm going internationally again. Well, cause I already did that last year and so of course I'm doing it again in February, heading back to Saudi, but like, I know these moments are unlocking
Starting point is 00:24:04 so many more powerful moments. I know that because I am something, somebody else can become it, right? Like, and start looking at your life that way. This goes back to purpose-driven life. Like for me, for the moments I got scared, I was going to Saudi Arabia and I didn't know how it was gonna go.
Starting point is 00:24:17 If I can take that stage and be that woman, those women in the audience have the opportunity to become it. And so like, start seeing it as you're unlocking doors for other people because of the courage and the confidence that you have. And as we step more and more into this and own it, we just make the world a better place and unlock potential for others, which is so freaking exciting.
Starting point is 00:24:36 I love it. Let go of the how. Again, back to detachment theory, just got to let go. You don't have to have it all figured out. And as my business partner in LA would say, it's all about the who, not the how. Start getting yourself in the right rooms with the right who, and the how will reveal itself.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Okay, here's a huge part that I never understood was part of this whole big plan, forgiveness for yourself, forgiveness for others. And this was, I was giving my energy and power away for a while because I was upset at the lady who fired me, right? So for probably two years, at least a year and a half, I was like, not thinking good thoughts about her. And then one day I decided, I just got to forgive this lady. Like I'm giving her so much of my thoughts during a day, energy during day. I never think about this lady since I forgave her. She did not
Starting point is 00:25:21 ask me to forgive her. I understand that. I just sat and practiced forgiveness with her, knowing that it must've been hard to work side by side with me. I'm sure it was. Right, like as another female leader, I'm sure she felt that it was competitive. I'm sure that sucked for her. I am really loud.
Starting point is 00:25:35 I like show up and take over a lot of situations that probably did not feel good. So I get it. I was not her person. She probably made the right decision firing me. Well, I guess that's debatable, but whatever. It doesn't really matter. It's irrelevant. I forgive her. I tried to put myself in her person. She probably made the right decision firing me. Well, I guess that's debatable, but whatever. It doesn't really matter. It's irrelevant.
Starting point is 00:25:46 I forgive her. I tried to put myself in her shoes. I felt empathy for her. And now I've moved on. So offer others forgiveness. It gives you your power back. It gives you your energy back. And most importantly, give forgiveness for yourself.
Starting point is 00:26:01 When you start doing that, you just start vibrating at a higher level, attracting more positive people, have more opportunities into your life, right? Okay. Focus on your intentions daily and declare them. This is something that I do a lot now that I didn't used to do. If I'm going into a meeting, if I'm going into a speech, if I'm getting on a phone call with someone, I take a brief moment and I set an intention. I asked for help. You know, if I need God, please speak through me
Starting point is 00:26:26 on this call, please help me to find empathy for this person. Please help me to find a clear way out of this challenging situation that can be resolved with ease and grace for all. Right, like I just get really clear on what the big picture goal is that I wanna achieve, not knowing how it will be achieved, but putting positive intention out there
Starting point is 00:26:44 before I begin that next task and being open to it can go any different way. Starting point is 00:28:59 It's been my experience. Okay, I don't have it. I've got it all written out on a piece of paper. I've got to put this into something that's like very systematic so that I can make it easier for you guys, I don't have it. I've got it all written out on a piece of paper. I've got to put this into something that's like very systematic so that I can make it easier for you guys, I'm hoping. But I want to hear, what do you think about that? Let me know what your thoughts are. Am I just being crazy again?
Starting point is 00:29:14 Okay, LinkedIn has been reaching out to me, asking me to offer feedback on questions that they get for sales leadership. It's wild, the response we've been getting. I mean, it's really, really wild. Go on LinkedIn and you can see these articles that they've been having me. I just write an answer to these questions.
Starting point is 00:29:32 And then it's like 80,000 people. It's wild, the response we're getting. Okay, so this week they reached out to me and they said, what do you do? And again, this is published publicly on LinkedIn. It says, Heather, what do you do do if you have a problem with a client you find out it's your own sales team that dropped the ball did something wrong how do you resolve it you've got an issue you got an upset client what do you do okay this is what I wrote use
Starting point is 00:29:58 this as an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting this is so key guys show the client how seriously you are taking this issue and how important they are to you. Huge! Once there, allow them to empty their glass. Actively listen to them. When you actively listen to someone it's a closer thing to love somebody will feel. Take notes. Show you are paying attention. Show empathy and repeat back to them what they're saying to you to ensure you actually are hearing them correctly. Then ask them for their advice. How would you handle this? How would they like to see this handled? Be respectful. Be upfront. Do not blame anyone else. Instead, own the area yourself as the leader
Starting point is 00:30:36 and show accountability and honor the client's suggestion on how to handle the issue. Problem solved and you are welcome. Okay, so that's how I'd handle it.
