Crime in Sports - #283 - Please Hate Me - The Hateableness of Marcelo "El Chino" Rios

Episode Date: December 14, 2021

This week, we wade in to the story of a tennis player, that was hated by just about everyone he ever spoke to. He picked up the sport, later than most kids, with a natural talent that made hi...m not have to plan his attacks like most players. He was also a HUGE jerk. Refusing autographs for kids, abusing the media, other players, line judges, legal judges, people in bars, his wife, and even his coaches. He seemed to relish being hated, but this had consequences on his life, his career, and even his underwear! A truly strange story!! Be a natural talent, insult everyone that you've ever met, and still expect good things from the world with Marcelo Rios!! Check us out, every Tuesday! !We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!!  Hosted by James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman  Donate at... patreon.com/crimeinsports or with paypal.com using our email: crimeinsports@gmail.com  Get all the CIS & STM merch at crimeinsports.threadless.com  Go to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things CIS & STM!!  Contact us on... twitter.com/crimeinsports crimeinsports@gmail.com facebook.com/Crimeinsports instagram.com/smalltownmurder See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Shit, that's right. Every week I'm surprised. Damn it, I forgot who I was. It was on the tip of my tongue. Here I am.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Thank you folks so much for joining us. We are excited excited as usual. We have another, a weird episode this week as well. There's a lot of weird episodes, but some are kind of like, you get like your John Jones we had a few weeks ago. It's kind of a standard, you know, there's sports, there's crime mixed in with the sports. It goes cut and dry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:00 This one here, you know how we do is this person more of an idiot or more of an asshole? We play idiot or asshole. This guy is 100% asshole. He's not dumb at all. He's just an asshole. And a lot of this episode, there's not going to be a whole lot of sports. I'll tell you that right off the bat. There's not even a whole ton of actual crime, in quotes, crime, like arrests and things like that. There's some, but not a ton there is just
Starting point is 00:02:26 story after story and an anecdote after anecdote about what an asshole this guy is it's just a the life of an asshole it's just amazing right it's a a lot of fun it's a loosey-goosey episode next week we're going to be off uh no crime and sports next week it's christmas week and that's our present to ourselves is a week of some sanity and then we'll be back hard after that don't worry sanity well you're gonna be in a fucking airport that's true yeah we're gonna be flying home from portland during christmas week and then my son's coming out here there's no sanity at all i got a lot going on so But a little bit of a break of work. Yeah, we'll be flying, so we won't be able to record, and that's kind of how we plan the whole thing for Christmas. We usually take off crime and sports for Christmas.
Starting point is 00:03:12 There'll be Small Town Murder that week, though. And quickly, go over. Thank you for everything, by the way, this week, everybody. Thanks for your reviews. They do help. They help drive us up the charts, so thank you for those. You need to head over to shutupandgiveMurder.com right now for everything. T-shirts and mugs and bath mats.
Starting point is 00:03:30 You name it, it's in there for merch. And then on top of that, tickets to live shows. Tons of live shows. They're happening. Come and see us at a live show. We do throw down hard at live shows. We're comics, so we're not going to sit up there with our thumbs up our asses. It's going to be a comedy show, and you're going to laugh just as hard as you sit up there and with our thumbs up our asses. It's going to be a comedy show
Starting point is 00:03:46 and you're going to laugh just as hard as you would. We'll put our thumbs up each other's asses. If it gets laughs, we will. That's the thing. We are comics, so on a stage,
Starting point is 00:03:54 we'll do whatever it takes for laughs, including some sort of double thumb butt thing. So that's it. Get over there. Oh my goodness. Patreon.com slash Crime and Sports. Mike, we have such good episodes this week that we just released that are fantastic.
Starting point is 00:04:11 We think you're going to love them. First of all, anybody over $5 or $5 or above, you get access to everything on Patreon, all the bonus episodes. Crime and Sports and Small Tap Murder. This week, no different. We have two episodes one the crime and sports one something awesome something close to everybody's heart we've all bought some sort of memorabilia yeah and most of it's probably fake we found out it's at least half of it uh it's an episode on counterfeit memorabilia autographs and things like that and it's shocking a man tweeted us james his bond scott
Starting point is 00:04:46 acdc yeah i saw that fake yep it was give that the certificate was from the company that was a complete fraud so complete fake and he's like damn it and we're like yep i mean this find out if that thing you bought is real basically we'll let you know and my favorite tweet of the week. I know. That was amazing. And for Small Town Murder, we have just a fun episode. It is weird shit that goes on at county and state fairs across the country. You're going to be stunned.
Starting point is 00:05:15 You're going to be stunned. There's monkeys on dogs. There's a llama prom that you need to really watch. It's wild. It's crazy shit. Patreon.com slash crime and sports is where you get all that stuff and you're going to get a shout out at the end of the show because you donated and damn it we appreciate you so absolutely jimmy's going to try hard to pronounce your name correctly
Starting point is 00:05:35 while completely destroying it so that's how we show our gratitude and then if you just want to make a donation get your shout out and have great karma, do it over at PayPal using our email address. CrimeandSports at gmail.com. Right. Let's get it on, Jimmy. Let's do it. I would love it. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:05:52 We're going down south today. Down South America. Never mind south. We're going way down south, I would say here, for Marcelo Andres Rios Mayorga. The original South. There you go. Marcelo Rios is what he goes by. El Chino is his nickname.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Soccer playing stud, huh? Not even, no. Not even a little bit. Nope. You would think so. But no, this week we're going into a sport that we've done very few on, is tennis. Flamenco dancers. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Next year we're going with Matadors, I believe. Oh, Matadors, yes, obviously. Salsa dancing criminals. Yeah, you know, flamenco dancing Matador. Matador by day, flamenco dancer by night. Marcelo Andres Rio Mayorga. Sounds like it's a... Nobody would bat a fucking eye.
Starting point is 00:06:46 That's the thing. If I made up one of my backstories, because it's foreigners that I make it up for, because sometimes there's no backstory, and we don't know anything about it, so it's just I'll make up a crazy story once in a blue moon. Not on this episode, so you never know when it's coming.
Starting point is 00:07:00 It's not coming today. I could have said he was a bullfighter by day and a flamenco dancer by night and he got in trouble with the local crime boss's daughter who he taught flamenco to and they fell you would have bought every one of you would have bought it i could have told it for a half hour it would have been fucking incredible it would have been like this is amazing and then i would have been like he doesn't he's never even seen a bull. The man doesn't even exist. He plays tennis.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Have a good one. Sorry about that. And he's a fine gentleman. Seems like a nice guy. He plays tennis. Good player. No rest. Goodbye.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Bye, everybody. More crime next week. The crime is me stealing your time. That's it. But you laughed, didn't you? Maybe April Fool's. So he's born december 26th 1975 so he's almost became a christmas almost a christmas baby he's born stubborn at the beginning yeah he's it persists throughout his life his stubbornness right from there they wanted him to come out on christmas he's like no i'm waiting a day it's that that's what it is he's got this this weird pushback thing where if he thinks you want
Starting point is 00:08:13 something that's you know even very reasonable to want he's not giving it to you and he's going to give you the opposite of that just to be a dick it's strange a lot of it might come from his father i'm not sure from what i understand here he's born in santiago chile chile chile um chile by the way do you know anybody any chilean people you ever know anybody no i've just seen coverage of some miners that's it there's some miners down there yeah in the ground not not children. No. I've seen coverage of some small Chilean children. Yeah, it was hot. No. Stuck in the ground, minors.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Yeah. No, one of the movies I did, the sound guy that I hired was a Chilean guy, and he was brand new to the US. Oh, boy. He did a bunch of sound work for National Geographic and shit like that. And so he's crazy. So I'm like, this is the guy you want. He'll do anything.
Starting point is 00:09:07 He'll follow fucking bugs around in the jungle. He'll do whatever. He'll get seven feet from a lion. He doesn't give a shit. He was the nicest. Everything that he saw, he was like, whoa, that's wonderful. He went in my bathroom. He came out.
Starting point is 00:09:23 He just took a piss. He was in there for a minute and a half he came out his eyes wide and he said your toilet paper is beautiful and i said what he said it's it's beautiful he said i'm i'm sad that i don't have to go that's what he said he said it was wonderful to use that yeah he was telling when he was saying it was luxurious i'm like it's toilet paper it's just some charmin i mean it's not like you know gas station yourself but yeah i gave him a roll i was like dude take this home you know back he was like oh he held it
Starting point is 00:09:55 it was fucking wild imagine that and he had money like we were paying him money and stuff like he did work he just had i don't know what it was this was this toilet paper is mesmerized by it so they have bad toilet paper in chile that's all i know about it bad toilet paper so if any at all of it doesn't work no shit uh his father's name jorge rio uh rios jarvis or jarvis uh was an engineer and a businessman. Oh. So, yeah, Marcelo does not. Doing fine. Yeah, he's not like, this isn't Bruno Fernandez de Sousa, like, I'm from the favela, bitch.
Starting point is 00:10:33 None of that shit is going on here. They are upper middle class. They have, you know, socially, they're a good family and shit like that. The man plays tennis, James. Well, yeah, that's the thing i he ended up but sometimes we've had weird situations where you know did i make that up or not or somebody's it was the janitor i think i made that up never mind we've had something like this i'm sure that i that's true the williams sisters are not uh we're not from a very well-off family they struggled struggled, too. There's public. There's public.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Yeah. Some of the best tennis players in the world. And you never know. We've had things where, like, I've heard stories where, like, you know, somebody's father was, like, a groundskeeper for something. So the kid got to play and shit like that you get. So I don't know. Whatever. And then his mother, Alicia Mayorga, was a teacher.
Starting point is 00:11:23 So these are educated people, an engineer and a teacher. The family is together, sound, intact, and also kind of controlling, too, his parents, which might be why he kind of lashes out. He has an older sister named Paula as well, or Paola, however, probably, I would assume. It's with a U, though, so I don't know. It could be anything. Anyway, 1985. So he's not even 10 yet. His family moves next door to a country club. So nice neighborhood, number one.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Number two, really easy access to tennis courts. Yeah, it's right there. So yeah, he ends up in 86. He picks up tennis when he's about 10 years old, picks up a racket, and starts playing. And immediately he has some kind of talent. He's a lefty, number one. So in any sport, a lefty has a weird advantage
Starting point is 00:12:16 because nothing they do comes straight or right or nothing. Or like you expect it to. Exactly. Watch a left-handed quarterback throw the ball you're like that's not how balls get thrown yeah they have like this little flip thing they do at the end otherwise the ball is in travel right i don't understand why it would be different coming from one side or the other when they're equal but it should be the same just a mirror image but it's so it's so weird in baseball that's why you'll see like a left-handed relief pitcher who's 46
Starting point is 00:12:44 years old because it's just strange against a lefty they can get them out it's so weird in baseball. That's why you'll see like a left-handed relief pitcher who's 46 years old because it's just strange. Against a lefty, they can get him out. It's a weird thing. Boxing, nobody wants to fight lefties. George Foreman famously was like, I hate fighting southpaws. Johnny Carson, he said, I hate fighting southpaws. And he said, why? And he goes, they're put together backwards.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Whole thing's messed up. It just doesn't work right. Then David Letterman one time asked, he said, said well why don't you just practice in a mirror and george swern played along he's like that's genius that's perfect so right away his shot has weird spin to it and shit apparently this guy as this is the the theme of his whole life he is amazingly talented and gifted very very he's a tiny fuck too he's like five five he's a real little tiny dude really gifted as shit hits the ball hard without even trying to really just has weird shots with weird angles everybody that plays him says his balls just have they come in at weird angles that you don't expect. He's got weird balls.
Starting point is 00:13:46 You know, you look at his balls, you juggle them, and you're like, I don't know, they're hairier than usual. I was just thinking about, like, the logistics of being small versus being tall in playing tennis. Because in tennis, if you're tall, you've got to swing the ball down. You know what I mean? The higher the ball is is the better of a chance you've got at at returning it well we're at small maybe no tennis in tennis you want to be tall
Starting point is 00:14:11 because you cover more ground um i get two steps for me is across the thing you have to run you know what i mean longer arms longer legs you're covering more ground i'm just thinking about the ability to to throw the ball around in most most sports, height is rarely a disadvantage. It's just a weird thing the way it works. I'm trying to think of a sport where height is a disadvantage. Besides bodybuilding, I can't think of one. I literally almost said volleyball. That's maybe the worst one.
Starting point is 00:14:37 That and basketball are the two that are the most advantageous. Or maybe if you're like a, I don't even know. Baseball, if you're seven feet tall don't even know i mean baseball if you're like seven feet tall that's not great unless you're a pitcher there's literally nothing james then it's fine but as a hitter it's bad because you have a huge strike zone and you know it's hard for you to get to low balls but other than that it's yeah it's a good advantage just pitch defensively as a baseball player you can you can get to the ball fast everything yeah really there's no there's no disadvantages to being tall.
Starting point is 00:15:07 So fuck you. But in tennis, you don't see these guys aren't 6'5". They seem to be more compact, like kind of, you know, back and forth kind of lateral movement kind of guys. There's more Andre Agassiz than there are, I don't know. Is Pete Sampras tall? He's big, right? I mean, he looks somewhat tall.
Starting point is 00:15:25 He seemed, maybe it was just the hair, but he seemed big as shit. I don't think he's like 6'4". No, I don't think so either. Maybe 6'1 or something, I don't know. But he didn't pick up, most players that play tennis play from a very early age. They start playing when they're four.
Starting point is 00:15:42 It's just not a game that you pick up later on. You have to, it's like baseball like baseball like basketball people can pick up later if they're skilled enough hakeem elijah one didn't start playing until five years before he was in the nba and he never you can discover that you have that talent and you can you can own it later football unless you're a quarterback forget about it you can do it six months they can get you to be i mean they drafted guys who never even played fucking football and they've been successful in the nfl just to teach them here catch it like this and then run hockey is the same you know what it is james it's hitting things it's when you have to hit something you have to you have to hone that skill for years to be able to
Starting point is 00:16:17 do it hockey it's just skating so you have to be able to skate like walking or else it's it doesn't if you can skate handling it is so impressive it is it's very impressive but the skating is half of it if you couldn't skate naturally if you had to think about your skating while you were skating you definitely couldn't puck handle like that you know so you gotta do that shit early that's why it gets people from cold environments or ice skating early but like for tennis yeah it's an early game i mean it's just to pick up all the angles you gotta put on that fucking ball is incredible. Yeah. So he didn't start playing until he was 10, though.
Starting point is 00:16:49 So that was really, that's really late for a professional player. These people are, these guys are pros when they're 15. So, I mean, yeah, you have to be playing longer. So, yeah, his parents just thought it was a hobby, you know, something to get some energy out of him. He never had any interest in watching tennis really didn't like watching it or didn't have any interest in tennis he just liked to play tennis because he was pretty good at it and it was fun i guess watching it yeah he had no interest in it none um his parents never realized how good he was because he just went and played and then he'd come
Starting point is 00:17:19 home and so they didn't know that he was like they weren't even there yeah he was an amazing player they even tried to smoke in the pro yeah they didn't even know about the pro at the country club when he's 11 and he just started so they even tried to get him to stop playing so much they were like enough what are you playing the stupid tennis for you're because he's fucking up in school they were like concentrate on school never mind this tennis bullshit Do your homework. He even was put on Ritalin at one point for ADHD. So mid-80s, that's real early for kids to be getting medicated. You know, that's, yeah, that wasn't real prominent until the 90s. Like, when we were in elementary school, I don't remember many kids being on medication.
Starting point is 00:18:01 I knew two kids on Ritalin and those kids were like extreme cases their eyes are moving yeah yeah i know that it took a lot to get those kids on it yeah and they were like oh don't give him sugar oh god oh no jaw the day's ruined now oh it's all over he's on the ceiling i don't know how that happened he crawled up there i'll go back to bed fuck he's gonna ruin the whole day so yeah that's that's real early, though. Mid-80s, though, for Ritalin. Definitely. By the 90s, it was, you know, your kid was a little fidgety today.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Maybe you should medicate him. Different. But his mother stopped him taking it because she said it altered his personality and made him a different different person and he didn't like it um they'll finally just allowed him to play tennis because it was literally his only interest he had no interest so they were like and the only thing that calms him down fine do that yeah he's adhd he has a lot of energy and he doesn't like to do anything but play tennis so they're like well fuck i don't know what happened if we you know he has all this energy at home forget it he's gonna tear the place up so i still have yet to hear about a tennis player who uh soiled a on the path child you know what i mean like that just a tennis if he would have
Starting point is 00:19:16 been fine if it wasn't for that goddamn tennis it's so strange but like every other story we hear about with people who are in sports like tennis or figure skating where they come up early, their parents are not only behind them but driving them. And like they have to be because it's so nobody makes it otherwise. But this guy is like that's his hobby that he does. His parents don't really like him doing and he's going to be a pro at it. That seems it's the only reason they let him do it. It's because he wouldn't do anything else. Yeah. It's and he's going to be a pro at it. That seems... The only reason they let him do it is because he wouldn't do anything else. Yeah, and he's so hyper.
Starting point is 00:19:49 So finally, when he was 14, he was starting to get noticed by people playing tennis. So it came to the attention of his parents that he's a really good tennis player, actually, and he might be able to be a professional tennis player. So, yeah, they thought it was interesting. Apparently, they got ripped off by the Chilean Tennis Federation. I don't know what they did, but there was some sort of thing.
Starting point is 00:20:15 I guess they had to pay and something. But the family ended up eventually taking the Federation to court and won. Wow. Money that they took from them or something so uh one of the guys from the federation had a brother who was on a national chilean newspaper and they were mad at him so they made sure that rios looked like shit even as a teenager in the press said he wasn't very good and he's not a nice kid and you know whatever what the fuck man yeah so um one of the one of his uh contemporaries said in my opinion not having pushy parents who were naive and being
Starting point is 00:20:53 the first uh chilean player for a long time made marcello unprepared for life on the tour he didn't have his parents from day one going hey you're gonna do this you're gonna be a robot every day you wake up you're gonna work out like this then you're gonna shoot balls and hit balls and do this and he didn't have that he just had to kind of make his own structure of shit because his parents weren't for weren't forcing him so and if his parents tried to force him he probably wouldn't have done it knowing him so that's the other thing if they got behind him and did all that it would probably not happened anyway so this is just the way it was gonna happen so he likes to this guy says he likes to keep to himself.
Starting point is 00:21:26 If he could play tennis as he wished and not participate in off-court activities, he would be much happier. A psychology report states that Marcelo's attitude was similar to an artist. So when they did a workup on him, a shrink, they said he's similar to an artist. If he didn't like what he was doing, like playing a match, the way the match was going he just lose the match and get it over he just lose it and he think like he could begin again like yeah i'll just work on next time fuck this this is over the next one he said like an artist spoils a painting he's not happy with and just starts again i'm not happy with this just splash some shit on it and throw it out and fucking start over with the next one. And then that's not even in your mind anymore. That's how he is.
Starting point is 00:22:08 That's a cheery way of looking at it because it's also like a gambler's mentality of like, you know what I mean? Just saying, fuck it, and I'll bet bigger on the next one. I'll bet bigger on the next one. Yeah, but here it's not really anything to lose. So it's not the same. I mean, if it's losing the match, you're still losing. But you're not winning is what you're doing. People are much more likely to do things when there's loss involved than when there's gain involved.
Starting point is 00:22:35 When they do psychological experiments for weight loss and they have two groups. They'll have one group that gets penalized for not losing the weight and one group that gets rewarded for hitting their goals. And the group that gets penalized always kicks the shit out of the group that gets rewarded every single time, every single fucking time. It's just the way it is. People will go, I don't need that. But if it's taking away something they have, then they need to keep that. It's loss aversion. It's your brain. It's how psychology works. Interesting. Yeah. Loss aversion is how your brain works. It's loss aversion. It's your brain. It's how psychology works. Yeah. Loss aversion is how your brain works. It's just weird.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Things that you have are much more valuable to you than things that you don't have. That are even if they're much more valuable than the thing you have. Perspectively get. Right. Yeah. It's ridiculous. People's brains are amazing. I'd rather keep what I have rather than earn.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Yeah. But it makes sense because you can place value on it because you see it and you have it. You're already there. Yeah, yeah. Whereas like that, I don't even know what that, you know what I mean? Yeah, it's just, it's mathematically, it's the weirdest thing. And they also don't want to be responsible for their own, for their own, they don't, like they'd much rather let nature do it it's that thing we talked about in a bonus episode about the like the uh the the childhood vaccine uh experiment that they do where they take parents and they it's a it's a psychological test
Starting point is 00:23:52 and they ask parents there's a hypothetical we'll get back to marcello rios in one second but this is you guys like psychological shit so we'll we'll talk about it there is a you know hypothetical flu right and it's a only attacks children okay it's a child's flu tax children under 12 and and it will for you know there's a hypothetical is for every 100 kids 10 of them will die from the flu not 100 they get it for every 100 kids out there 10 of them are going to die for this flu from this flu so this flu will kill 10 of all children right so there's a vaccine for the flu that is 100 effective absolutely it works every time it's a shield against this flu right so 100 effective but the catch is that if you give if all the kids get the vaccine yeah five out of a hundred will die from the vaccine so that's half the chance of your kid dying basically that's that's a still great odds
Starting point is 00:24:54 and great numbers so they ask those parents would you give the kid the vaccine now yeah a vulcan would say of course that's way that's less people yes of course most parents say course, that's less people. Yes, of course. Most parents say no. And that's because they don't want to be, it's a risk aversion of your own thing. You don't want to be the person responsible for it. But if nature takes it, then you're not responsible for it, technically, in your brain.
Starting point is 00:25:18 But it's all psychological because math is math. And you know what I'm saying? That's how our brains work. It's our brains. You can't argue with numbers. It's just the way it is. Our brains are not logical, know what i'm saying so that's how our brains work it's our brains with numbers it's just the way it is our brains are not logical is what i'm saying and weird so yeah anyway that's kind of what he does here but he'll he'll do yeah when he'll when he's when he's not liking how he's playing a match he's just like well this match isn't what i want so whereas an athlete then redoubles the effort and buckles down and tries to dig out of what they're doing and come back.
Starting point is 00:25:47 He doesn't do that. He's not. He's an artist where he's like that. This painting's fucked. Scrap it. Next one's going to be great, though. It's it's interesting. What a wild way to think about sports.
Starting point is 00:25:57 It's yeah, it's not a regular attitude for sports. And it's you kind of have to be like a tennis player or a golfer or some sort of weird individual sport for you to even be able to have a chance yeah because you would be ostracized and kicked off every team you play on yeah you'd have to do you'd never point guard yeah you're motherfucker your high school team would fucking cut you like you would never power forward is trying to win today yeah hey look at that yeah so this person said of course this attitude wasn't going to get him anywhere on the tour so yeah once he figured out he liked tennis he lost complete interest in school yeah just had no interest in it because he's like well i'm not gonna i'm not gonna be an engineer or
Starting point is 00:26:37 a teacher i'm playing tennis so what the fuck do i need to do that for just like just crosses that off and throws that aside so that's done he said quote i didn't behave that good in class he said uh i wasn't the kind of person who could sit behind a desk for three hours so yeah he's got adhd and um it's not going to work out but he said he had no problem playing tennis for three straight hours that was you know he could do that. He's moving around, he's doing shit. So when he's 14, 1989, he transfers out of regular school
Starting point is 00:27:08 where there's sitting behind desks and transfers to a sports academy which is concentrating on the athletics and not on the desk work.
Starting point is 00:27:16 So, for a kid like him, it's a godsend. Like, it couldn't be any better. Yeah, he said that he just,
Starting point is 00:27:23 you know, couldn't sit there. So that's that so it's awesome that it exists yeah a lot of the countries a lot of other countries have specialized things that you can go into at a younger age than here so cool which also it is cool but like also who the hell knows what you want to do when you're 14 i guess if you're a world-class athlete it's a different thing but i mean like if you're like well i'm very interested in whatever it is at 14 it's hard to know if you'll still be interested in that when you're a world-class athlete it's a different thing but i mean like if you're like well i'm very interested in whatever it is at 14 it's hard to know if you'll still be interested in that when
Starting point is 00:27:48 you're 17 so if you that's difficult you know unless it's some world-class talent you imagine having talent at something that you fucking hate like loathe can't yeah can't hate it more but you're like unbelievable yeah that would really be that would really be, that'd be irritating. And then your parents force you to go to some school that's built around it. Like, ah, I'm going to be all successful. Yeah, get in here, you fucking robo-captain. Let's go. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:28:16 So he said, quote, I started playing juniors and tournaments in juniors, and I did pretty good after I decided to play professional. So that's when I realized I could play so there we go 1991 he the apparently there's they decide in Chile to
Starting point is 00:28:36 completely like revamp their athletics for like how they're going to help kids do this shit. So especially with tennis, it's a, they come up with some new federation and they want to lift up Chilean tennis to first level tennis. They said they want it to be,
Starting point is 00:28:54 you know, world-class world-class here. And, um, he was at the time he's 15 years old. He's five foot four, not impressive looking until he starts playing. And they said, quote, suddenly there were sponsors, a new system of junior tournaments in the country, tennis on TV and the Federation supporting the risky Marcelo Rios project the Satellite Futuro set of tournaments created to develop young tennis with enough prizes and some ATP points.
Starting point is 00:29:30 The only one in Chile that gave those at the time to attract some good South American players. At that time, Rios looked like a 14-year-old kid playing against adults, and he probably didn't weigh more than 130 pounds. Yeah. So he was playing like 17, 18 year olds when he was 14. Tiny. Tiny. He just looks and he looked even younger because of how small he was. So everybody thought he was fucking 11.
Starting point is 00:29:53 When he first came in the pro tour, one of the pros said that they thought for the first six months they thought he was the ball boy. They did. They literally thought he was the ball boy till they accidentally saw him playing one day and were like oh oh that he's a fucking player holy shit the ball boy can fucking throw down he's good wow realize that ball boy he can play yeah that ball boy is doing great here so uh he right away becomes as soon as he becomes a pro the whole whole Chilean society doesn't have a lot of international athletes. No. No. They said, let's make a rock star.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Let's put everything we have behind this kid who's the best at kind of anything that we have a chance of getting some attention here. Make him Axel Rosé. That's it. Axel Rosé. So he does 92 he leaves home and uh wants to become a full time tennis pro at 16 and his parents are not they don't think it's a good idea they think that he should stay home and all that sort of thing but he goes and he pretty much kicks the shit out of everyone in the 18 and under circuit and uh and he, and he wins the 1993 us open juniors title as well. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:09 So the, uh, one of the guys says, quote, during the following years, we experienced the side effects of having a rockstar tennis player, the whole country watching tennis at three o'clock in the morning, if necessary,
Starting point is 00:31:20 if it was from the States. Oh boy. So P that's, he became a national hero literally they said that he was they said that uh he was playing in the most prestigious junior tournaments that they said was completely unthinkable for a kid like that and from chile before that he's the best that they've ever had so there was people were getting up you know here if you know anybody who's real into like european soccer yeah and the cup comes
Starting point is 00:31:45 around and they're you know they're up at the yeah we're gonna hang out at my house yeah be over at like three in the morning sounds great and you're like what the fuck are you people doing that's what they were doing down there to see his matches and when i tell you i loved uh tennis as a kid to watch it that's that's when i had to watch it i would wake like i was an early riser in school i would get up three four in the morning because my stepfather would leave at like one in the morning and it was the time when the house was silent and I had the free reign I could do whatever I wanted but the only thing on tv was fucking Richard Pryor George Carlin uh Eddie Murphy and tennis that's what I was watching and Benny Hinn to be fair fair, and Australian Rules Football. Don't leave that out either.
Starting point is 00:32:26 HBO was comedy specials, and then I think it was Showtime had tennis, and then ESPN also, obviously, as well. And I used to watch Martina Navratilova. All these people that are unbelievable, they were fantastic, but it was like in the heyday of the Pete Sampras versus Andre Agassi. You're talking like late late 80s early 90s that's like tennis was giant then there was so many like just everybody knew them personalities they were on commercials there was a lot of it was really a big deal 15 people that you knew who
Starting point is 00:32:58 they were now there's like six maybe five from the 80s i remember sports center you'd hear the same names over and over again it was was all these big, giant people. So to this and for his career, I think I'm going to give Steve Martin the floor here. Obviously not a tennis player, the world-class, wonderful comedian Steve Martin and all-around good guy. If you told me Steve Martin killed five people, I'd go, I'd like to see the evidence. And then I'd like to know that he didn't have a damn good reason because I love Steve Martin. I really do. They all die.
Starting point is 00:33:29 They're not dead. Take the, it's just a headband arrow. It's not through their head. All of them, all of them had an arrow through the head. Yeah. Do your homework. Do your homework. So this is a famous quote of his and it's, uh feel like this is kind of what marcelo rios was
Starting point is 00:33:47 going for we'll put it that way that's why it works and this works for anything that you're doing especially if it's something athletic or artistic especially art because athletic you can athletic there's a score so you can kick someone's ass and no matter how little anybody thought of you if you win you won and that's it now it's different whereas entertainment's completely different and it's all whatever so it's kind of more to entertain but it works for him too basically steve martin quote be undeniably good when people ask me how you how do you make it what i always tell them and nobody ever takes note of uh it because it's not the answer they want to hear. What they want to hear is here's how you get an agent. Here's how you write a script.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Here's how you do this. But I always say, be so good they can't ignore you. If somebody thinking, how can I be really good? People are going to come to you. It's much easier doing it that way than going to cocktail parties. He's right. So he is right. And that's how Marcello's attitude is.
Starting point is 00:34:44 He's like, well, I'm just going to marcello's attitude is he's like well i'm just going to be amazing on the court when i feel like it and i'm not going to kiss anybody's ass and uh there's a there's a there's a chasm between ass kissing and being intentionally an asshole that's the other thing there's a big chasm there so he says uh anyway when he's a junior he gets he's reaches as a number as high as number one ranking in the world as a junior which is pretty amazing he reached the semi-finals of the junior french open in 93 without dropping a set and then he was then he was defeated in straight sets by somebody so he swept everything and then this next guy swept him out so yeah this didn't feel like it that match or didn't have didn't have it that match uh he won the u.s the junior u.s open in
Starting point is 00:35:31 93 while only dropping one set during the entire tournament so he's when he wants to he's a bad motherfucker when he wins he wins big when he loses he loses big yeah he just he just doesn't even try when he loses big and that's the complaint on he loses big. Yeah, he just doesn't even try when he loses big. And that's the complaint on him a lot is he tanks. He just doesn't care. If people show up to watch him play and then he doesn't like the way it's going, he'll just tank the rest of the match and everyone's pissed off because they're not going to see a good match.

This is a guy named Diego Malaga, who is a college tennis player. He said, quote, or was during when this book was written, this book, I'll give you the title of it. It's a book and it just has a lot of quotes
Starting point is 00:38:02 about Rios that somebody wrote. And it says, quote, I saw Rios play in Peru when he was 16 or 17. I was a little kid, 8 or 9. I just remember he was always grumpy. He was always banging his racket on the ground. I thought, he's crazy. It was the COSAT Junior. It's a South American tour.
Starting point is 00:38:23 They play in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia. The three best players of the tour get to go to the European circuit. The match I remember was Rios playing a guy from Colombia. He was losing so bad. The referee gave him two warnings for cursing and hitting his racket on the ground. My mom was like, he's never going to be in the top ten in the world with that attitude. My mom is the kind of person that when I played and hit my racket on the ground, she would tell me if I kept behaving like that that she would go over to the umpire and
Starting point is 00:38:48 tell him to take me out of the tournament so to lay in mackinrow he was yeah he was horrified and that's kind of what this that's kind of what rios is except mackinrow that shit's all calculated mackinrow has like a he's a machiavellian son of a bitch on the tennis court who's got a complete plan of how he's going to try to do everything it's a and mackinrow also in his game he had some good wild shit going on but he was a little more controlled this guy just is out of control for the most part so he doesn't really have a lot of friends uh not a lot of friends one of his people that knows him said i think that maybe if rios was not like he was i mean a hard personality a guy with uh with few friends maybe he probably never goes up in tennis they're saying maybe if he was a nicer guy he wouldn't have made it yeah he says
Starting point is 00:39:38 he would not have been as successful it's hard to describe it's a factor that the family has to explain when he was traveling for the tour normally he was with his father and mother. They are okay. I remember when Marcello was very young, the father told everybody in the tour, the number one rule is that you don't have friends. No friends was the most important rule for him. And he applied that rule maybe all life, maybe maybe outside the court also at that time he had like a challenge with his father because the father i remember told me that marcello must go inside the top 100 or he must go to the university to study something else wow so if he wasn't in the top 100 he's fucking going to college yeah because he's not going to have friends for nepotism no he said the father defined very very high goals for marcello yeah if you're not one of the best you're going to college because you're not just going to languish in tennis and be a you know some fucking country club pro bum trying to bang housewives when you're
Starting point is 00:40:35 fucking 30 we're not doing that we're better than that son so he uh he ends up in um let's see february of 1993 he plays the first atp which is the tennis tournament the whole tennis whatever he plays the first atp challenger in vina del mar vina del mar but loses in the first round to Spain's Federico Sanchez, and he got swept in two sets. 1993 finishes as the number one ranked junior. That's when he won the U.S. Open juniors, also the Italian Open juniors, and turns pro after winning the U.S. Open one.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Wow. Yeah, by 95, he wins his first ATPp tournament or whatever the fuck in bologna he wins additional singles titles in amsterdam and koala lampore that year as well incredible so by 95 he's 19 years old and he's traveling the traveling the world all the world yeah he's in italy he's in he's all over the goddamn place in Amsterdam he's killing it and he he was crushing people too he was winning a lot of these in straight sets just fucking just punking people he's killing it so um Andre Agassi's dad here's a quote from Andre Agassi's dad Andre Agassi's dad was his coach as well so he's a tennis guy is he is he yeah he's a coach yeah he's Agassi's coach that's why I guess that makes sense why Agassi's been good for fucking ever that's why yeah he's a tennis guy is he is he yeah he's a coach yeah he's agassi's coach that's why i guess that
Starting point is 00:42:05 i guess that makes sense why agassi's been good for fucking ever that's why yeah he's it was good for a long time even with fake hair he was still doing great and then when he gave it all up didn't matter still doing fantastic i like agassi bald i really do he's he seems he's better bald though he had like a mullet like what, what are you doing? That's what you need? Remember the old commercials of him back in like the early 90s for those cameras? And it was like those still shots of him. And it was like his mullet would be like flying. You're like, why do you have that?
Starting point is 00:42:37 Imagine how good he would have been if he would have just shaved it and not cared about the hair. You know what I mean? If he gave all his attention to his game, he would have dominated. Yeah, you're right. Agassi's main problem was his distraction by his follicle distraction. Follicular distraction was his issue.
Starting point is 00:42:54 How am I going to make this look good today? He could have been Pete Sampras in terms of winning, but it didn't work out. So he says, this is Mike Agassi, Andre's dad marcelo rios was like andre and that he could take the ball early and had very good timing so he could hit it up the line or play angles in a way he was better than andre because you could not read rios's shot you could not tell where he was hitting the ball from the angle of the racket face for that reason he was it was difficult to read his shot because he had great timing he could hit the ball harder off the same swing it's hard to hit hard
Starting point is 00:43:30 you have 200 fighters for example and you have maybe six who have a knockout punch why can't the other 194 do it it's hard that's why hitting hard that's an art it's a talent it's damn near impossible is what it is it's's fucking amazing. It's incredible. That's why you see guys in baseball, how the fuck does a ball fly off his bat like that? I don't know. Nature. It's just that some guys can do that.
Starting point is 00:43:52 That's what it is. And this guy's got, he's saying that while you're watching the ball hit the racket, normally that's how a guy's reading where it's going to go. You know what I mean? And he said with his, it doesn't necessarily line up to where the shot he's taken goes where you think it's gonna go wow so it's weird it's like a pitcher who hides his uh his release and it's you know you don't see the ball he hides the ball and his delivery and then you don't see it and at the last second you have to try to figure out where the fuck it's coming that's that's kind of what he does with the ball so it's you know hard to play against him but
Starting point is 00:44:24 he doesn't have a mitt to hide. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He can't hide the ball. It's just popping off. It's a bright yellow ball hitting a fucking racket. But it's, I don't know. In plain open sight, and then it changes trajectory.
Starting point is 00:44:37 What the fuck? It's a strange thing. So 1995, there is a guy named Weller Evans. So, 1995, there is a guy named Weller Evans. He worked on the ATP tour for 25 years as a communications manager and vice president. So, he's had a lot of dealings with Marcelo Rios. And let's see what he has to say about him because he has some stories. He says, quote, as far as making the sport interesting, Rios did that.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Every sport needs a villain to make things interesting. Someone that is universally hated yeah he would get he would come out like at the french open and all 15 000 people would boo him like it was like it was wrestling bro he had that's awesome they hate people hated him they fucking despised him so he said obviously marcelo rios went out of his way to as sports illustrated portrayed him become the most hated man in tennis jesus christ man that's the thing about tennis too is that you can be that personification and if you keep winning matches they have to have oh yeah you're gonna there's no other sport that that exists in no not really i mean you can be an asshole i guess golf i guess that works but but every sport golf there's not many people i can't think of anybody that's like universally despised in golf no no that's kind of a yeah you're right
Starting point is 00:45:55 it's i'm thinking about it there's other team like team sports that have that but that's usually because they did something to the other team like like an early, late 80s Pistons thing. Like, you know, everyone hated Bill Lambert and Isaiah Thomas, but the Pistons fans liked him. Right. You know, it's kind of like that, I guess. They've still got fans. There aren't many guys in history that have just been universally hated that's not a team sport like that. It's true.
Starting point is 00:46:21 It's really true. Well, here's what this guy says this weller guy says about this whole deal here weller evans he says quote probably the biggest mistake i made in my 25 years at the atp was not letting marcelo rios go to jail in 1995 in cincinnati so this is this is his first legal run in here at the zoo and pissed off the monkey. The monkey. He said, why does it smell like sulfur here? So fucking bad. And why does your pizza suck? That's what happened.
Starting point is 00:46:52 He said that at the ATP event in Cincinnati, every player gets a car to use during the week of the tournament. I think in 95, he was 19. He needed to be 21 to be able to take the car for the week, and Marcello wasn't old enough at the time. His coach signed the papers and said he would be the guy to drive the car. Okay. That agreement didn't last. Rios got behind the wheel of the car and peeled out of the parking lot at 50 miles an hour and almost ran down a police officer. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:47:23 Jesus Christ. You fucking idiot idiot from the rental car company like yeah yes i'll be the only one that drives it where'd it go where'd it go cop diving out of the way like this that's not great did it get stolen nope pregnant chick no nope not at all that's the guy so he said the police went after him and brought him back to the tournament and were going to arrest him i made the mistake of speaking to the police and diffusing the situation telling them that it would not happen again and that we would take responsibility for marcelos rios the rest of the week so they relented and didn't take him to downtown mason i would say that's
Starting point is 00:48:05 probably the biggest mistake because maybe one night in jail and perhaps meeting a guy named bubba may have been the best thing for marcello's personal development oh my god he's such an asshole he's like maybe maybe if someone would have raped him good that would have helped what kind of the only thing we could think maybe if someone got him in the shower and held him down and really maybe if they just ran a train on him and the whole cell block had their turn with him i feel like maybe he would have been a better player prison gang banged it would have corrected this problem what kind of problem must he have jesus i could see maybe getting arrested would have woke him up, but not that part of it.
Starting point is 00:48:45 He was like forcefully raped by a prisoner for stealing a rental car to curtail the rest of the story. I feel like he needed to involuntarily toss someone salad to really feel the pressures that he should have been feeling. Sometimes the wrinkles of a butthole being forced upon you is a way it's it's like a it's like a kaleidoscope in one regard and in the other regard it's hypnotizing and it'll it puts you in a different state of mind he needs to feel a stranger's tongue on every wrinkle of his own b-hole. That would be, quote, maybe the best thing for Marcelo's personal development. That's the line. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:49:33 That's the best thing for his personal development? What a terrible man. What a weird, weird fucking thing to say. Period. Holy shit, I wish he was raped. What the fuck maybe if somebody would have just given him a good rape and this whole situation could have been avoided and james and jimmy wouldn't have to talk about this perhaps a giant veiny prison cock would have fixed all this i mean it fixes some things it might have helped fix this we don't know what a thing to say
Starting point is 00:50:05 it's the it's just the strangest angle to take on it i get like like i said i get like okay maybe a night in jail would have oh wow you know but this is something completely different he's he's shouldering all the blame himself and because whatever happened whatever foreshadowing he's giving us he feels personally uh culpable for whatever's about to happen yeah and because of that he'd rather that man get raped than him him feel an ounce of this culpability crazy that's all this book is is just like these crazy quotes for like i'll give you the it's called uh marcello rios the man we barely knew it's by mark scoop malinowski and um i don't know it's on amazon a good one there he scooped a good one there like i said there's no narrative to it so if you're looking for a story it's not the one to do it but if you
Starting point is 00:51:02 just want to read crazy quotes about a person for fucking 300 pages it's pretty interesting 300 pages of people wishing prison rape on a man yeah it's just and there's plenty of people who would be like yeah team bubba i'll donate to bubba's fucking gofundme for his legal defense because no i wish so hard i'd buy a bubba smith jersey i love it holy shit man you would imagine he'd be very grateful for this man helping him out and getting him out of you know in a foreign country not going to jail you don't want to do that so they asked this guy did rio show any kind of gratitude for you for helping getting him out of the situation?
Starting point is 00:51:45 Weller Evans said, quote, I don't think he could spell the word gratitude. A couple of weeks later, probably not in English because he's not from here, but in Spanish, maybe a couple of weeks later, he wanted to play the Long Island tournament, a U.S. Open warm up event. Although I think he was top 50 in 95, he needed a wild card. He wanted to play the week before. maybe he felt he needed some match play jeff schwartz his agent asked if i would have a word with the tournament director which i again which again i did having put in a good word marcello received a wild card just to show how grateful he was to be in the tournament after he lost a game of pool in the players lounge to one of his buddies he went again went ahead and broke one of the two pool cues and pissed everybody off because he there's only two pool cues he broke one they unleashed this lunatic upon new york city and
Starting point is 00:52:35 long island anyway and then uh and then he ended up losing in straight sets anyway so it was like thanks idiot so he said quote i don't know how you say I don't care in Spanish, but that's probably something that should be etched on his tombstone. Do you think it's yo no care, right? I guess so. No give a shit, eh? So he said it seemed he was a spoiled. The question is, it seemed he was was a spoiled immature kid who did not sufficiently develop his social skills to the same level of his tennis abilities and weller evans said that's
Starting point is 00:53:11 quite honestly the air that he gave off throughout his career a spoiled kid who was immature and who just didn't care there you go so that's that's the table set for this guy oh my god coming into a weird life so i'm having so much fun it's what it's a crazy funny fucking story it really is because he's he's a nut man this guy is a nut wait do you hear some of the shit he says to people you're just like what he says to monica sellis is amazing in the way do you hear oh wow inside in the in the like the the cafeteria where all the tennis players eat for before. It's amazing. So you'll hear it's awesome. So 90 is not awesome, but it's crazy.
Starting point is 00:53:54 Ninety six here. Just a quick couple quick tennis things. He had good performances in the Masters Series tournaments. He reached the quarterfinals in the Masters Series of Stuggart and Rome, and then in the semifinals in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo and Canada. And in Austria, he won his fourth career title by defeating Felix Mantilla in straight sets.
Starting point is 00:54:19 And then he reached the final again in Santiago and also reached the finals in Barcelona and Scottsdale. So all around the world. You can't get three more. Santiago, Barcelona, and Scottsdale are very different places. He won all of them here. So they said for much of the year, he'd be ranked in the top 10, being the first Chilean in history to be ranked in the top 10. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Yeah. He finished the year ranked number 11 overall. So close enough. Right, yeah. So 1997, this is Weller Evans again, who his quotes are funny as shit. Quote, Marcello lost a pretty tough match, 7-6 in the third, to Byron Black in Scottsdale in 1997. He left the tournament rather abruptly,
Starting point is 00:55:05 headed off to Indian Wells. At the end of the week, I'm headed to Indian Wells as well. The volunteers in the players' lounge said they still had Marcelo Rios' laundry. This is fucking amazing. They asked every player if they would be so kind as to take Marcelo's laundry along to Indian Wells,
Starting point is 00:55:24 where he is, where they're all going uh they surprisingly had no takers he says not one of the other players would take it with them they're like fuck him let him go naked literally fuck him he can buy new underwear he can eat my shit i'm not doing it with this guy that's how much of a dick he is not one player was like i'll take his fucking crap that's like in in comedy If we were all doing shit and somebody left their notebook behind and be like, can you take this to him? Like, and every comic was like, fuck him. Let it stay here. That'd be wild.
Starting point is 00:55:52 Either that guy would be either way too good or way too much of a dick or a combination of both. It's way too much of a dick. Because if he's way too good, there'd be somebody who wanted to kiss his ass in case something good happened for him that they could ride the coattails. There's always a coattail rider in comedy of like, well, I think I suck, but he's pretty good. Maybe I can open for him someday if he makes it. Maybe he'll get a gig somewhere. He can bring me along and we'll both be well. Yeah, this is good.
Starting point is 00:56:15 This is good. I'll make 50 bucks and he can make 300 bucks. And he'll have a story one day about how I'm the best person in the world because I brought him every joke he's ever written back to him. Didn't throw it out. Right. So I told the volunteers I would take the laundry with me. So he's got this guy out of trouble. He got him in some tournament.
Starting point is 00:56:33 Now he's going to literally carry his fucking laundry. Jesus. He's a nice guy. I would say. When I got to Indian Wells, I found him and told him that I had it. Indian Wells I found him and told him that I had it then we got into a discussion about common courtesy because he seemed to want the laundry more urgently
Starting point is 00:56:48 and faster than I could deliver it and he was not prepared to say please or thank you for me going out of my way to get his laundry which none of his fellow players were willing to do he ended up screaming saying like I don't say thank you and then like at one point was like I don't
Starting point is 00:57:04 want the laundry then if I have to say thank you for it he literally said you can throw it in the garbage if i have to say thank you to get it from you like that's just a weird attitude i would do exactly that yeah be like awesome here it is it's in a fucking dumpster outside now i gave it to a bunch of fucking homeless people i just went out and said clothes anybody yeah here you go they washed it in the gutter and they're all wearing it everybody's wearing it and so there you go they have your rackets everybody everything's all set out so he said i got a call that evening from his agent jeff schwartz he said i understand you and marcello had a bit of an altercation this was not the first time i had a conversation with jeff about his personal development his personal development i told jeff i think marcello should show some common courtesy when people do him a favor
Starting point is 00:57:49 i didn't want an apology maybe he could say hey i was having a bad day thanks for looking out for me i'm fine with that yeah that's really the minimum okay absolutely you know what hey man having a bad day but uh you know whatever thanks for looking out. That's a really basic, not asking for an ass kiss. Nope. Doesn't have to grovel. He said, quote, Jeff called back and said, I don't think Marcelo is prepared to say anything right now. What? Why?
Starting point is 00:58:18 Okay, well, I'll hold his fucking socks hostage then. What are we talking about here? What are we talking about? He better figure it out quick. Yeah. He said this was when he was wearing Adidas apparel so he didn't need clothes. Because at all the tournaments they had like all the sponsors had shit that you could just go grab rackets and, you know, clothes and shit like that. But he said, I'm pretty sure there was an Adidas representative there at Indian Wells at the tournament site.
Starting point is 00:58:45 However, Jeff said he does really need his underwear. So literally, he just needs his underwear. But no underwear. They don't have underwear. There's no Adidas underwear for these guys. So he's like, shit. Yeah. So he's like, fuck.
Starting point is 00:58:59 He needs his underwear. So can you give me his drawers, please? He's going to be free-balling out there. Yeah, that's going to be. Maybe it'll be a freeing thing for him. Maybe it'll be better. I think, though, if you're. You smash a testicle against a thigh.
Starting point is 00:59:13 Yeah. You don't want all that lateral movement. It's a lot of thigh banging with your balls. I'll make you think twice about how you treat some people. Yeah. You're going to walk off the court a little more gingerly after that. Just a little tender down there. There's going to be no action tonight.
Starting point is 00:59:29 We'll put it that way. It's a little tender down in that area. You'll feel that in your kidneys. Yikes, that's a rough one. Yeah, so maybe you want to keep them snug to the body probably. He says, this is to Weller Evans, the next morning I was playing basketball early in the morning with some of the other tournament staff, coaches, and trainers.
Starting point is 00:59:45 I got to the locker room at 7.30, knowing how important it was for Marcelo to get his laundry and, most importantly, his underwear. Then I left to play basketball. When the game was over at 9, I went to the locker room and was horrified to see Marcelo's underwear was now swirling around the jacuzzi. What? Somebody had gotten into the locker room and vandalized his laundry they knew it was his so the other players yep he's i guess they found his underwear like in other places they just threw his underwear all over the place and like in the jacuzzi over here it was like on top of a locker there was some underwear
Starting point is 01:00:22 i just found underwear jacuzzi is the best place to put it that's hilarious that's yeah really fucking like either something really cool happened in there or something really not really gross one of the two so yeah he said that uh the one of the uh pairs of his underwear was even in the water fountain it was my responsibility to deal with this incident i reported the incident to the tournament director steve simon and he agreed we couldn't tolerate a player's property being vandalized like this it's in a sanctuary like the player's locker room so the other players ended up getting in trouble for vandalizing his laundry which i mean no this is that's a rib that's that's a classic like and we've talked about in wrestling a million times, the ribs that they pull. If someone's a little too big for their britches, not quite in with the program, treating other people not exactly like they need to be treated.
Starting point is 01:01:14 They'll cut your pants up. I mean, that's you'll come in and your pants will be cut into shreds and that'll be that. You know, you're they'll be shit in your shoes or there'll be some kind of signal to you that you should change your ways yeah you need to change your ways that's just the way it is you're being an asshole you're fucking other people's shit up green green room's the same thing green room the same thing it's a sacred place but if you like if you're a i don't know because i've never done it but if you were a complete piece of shit and like was disrespectful of the headliner they probably'd probably do something to you. If you're the headliner, no one will touch anything.
Starting point is 01:01:49 I'm like the nightlights at the clubs, James. Yeah, right. You have to touch the headliner. At an organized show like that, everybody's on their best behavior. Yeah, yeah. But open mics when bad things happen in the green room, forget it. All bets are off. If you leave something in the green room, it's going to get lit on fire.
Starting point is 01:02:02 Absolutely, yeah, because someone hates you out of those 20 people there. Someone hates you. We will all put cigarettes out on your joke book. It's going to be a bad day for you. It's bad shit if you're the asshole. And we don't buy the asshole, too. We don't mean that you have to go along with everything. But when you refuse to say thank you for things, that's a tip of a huge asshole iceberg is what that is.
Starting point is 01:02:23 That's a lot. It's a specific jerk. It's a specific kind of an asshole. In April 97, he wins first Master Series title in Monte Carlo. And the amazing thing is he wins it. It's his first major prestigious victory. It's in Monte Carlo. And they said he looked at the check and he said that it doesn't even cover the money i spent at
Starting point is 01:02:47 the casino this week well why'd you go to the casino uh i think the tournament took place like at a big money carlo casino so they said it's a 412 000 check that won't cover your losses and he said i don't think so oh my god so he's living fucking crazy he's living like a like a just a he's he's like a vacuum cleaner he's just sucking everything in 412 000 412 he lost more than that gambling oh my god then american dollars 412 000 he made that in what year is this 97 he is 20 something years old jesus he's not even 22 yet. He's 21 right now. He's doing great.
Starting point is 01:03:27 He's doing great, but he's gambling away 400 grand in a week. That's insanity. Wow. So he's doing all that. He also, at this time, he's asked if he's going to play in Wimbledon and shit, because that's a big one. And he says no, because he hates grass. He doesn't like playing on grass.
Starting point is 01:03:44 He said grass is for cows and soccer, not tennis. Oh, my. Okay. Doesn't like playing on grass at all. He's a clay guy. He loves clay. The ball takes weird bounces off it and shit, and he likes that. So he does all that.
Starting point is 01:03:59 He's doing great. March 3, 1998 comes around, and he is ranked number one in the atp number one first of all he's the smallest man ever to be ranked number one in the world that fucking not even five five smallest also the first south american to ever be number one in the world the most at a whole continent uh also obviously the first from chile because he's the first from the whole continent and uh he only plays one match as the number one player he plays in the davis cup and uh well he played it at that point and there's people saying that they think he's going to do better and he's going to have more matches coming
Starting point is 01:04:41 up and uh whatever so he it came, I guess it was in a tournament, Key Biscayne, Florida. His coach's name was Larry Stefanki. That'll come up again in a minute. So he had victories over Hendrik Dreekman with two Ns. Wow, that guy couldn't be more Dutch or whatever the fuck. Tommy Haas with two As and Gordon Ivanordon ivanisevich i just remember that name from sports center that's the only reason why i didn't struggle to say that so
Starting point is 01:05:11 he then beat thomas enquist in the quarterfinals and tim henman in the semifinals and then in the final on march 29th rios in a three set match defeats andre agassi wow there yep and uh apparently this was such a big deal in in his home country here thousands of people rush into the street to celebrate incredible yeah this is like crazy they and this is being played on another continent and they're they know about it people are celebrating in the streets like they won the world cup it's fucking so awesome it's insane so yeah he's uh they said he's he's the first spanish-speaking player to be the number one world ranking like that's how yeah i mean the spanish world doesn't you think a guy from spain might have done it at some point maybe yeah i suppose european it doesn't so it's just not typically a spanish-speaking sport no no no soccer's more
Starting point is 01:06:05 popular but it's not yeah soccer's more popular that's all there is to it i mean it's like saying it's not usually an american sport because it isn't either it's not as popular here as it is in europe either it just feels awful to say why does that feel awful to say because you're you didn't mean it like because they're dirty and they can't afford it that's not what you were saying it's just less popular but it sounds like you're saying they're because they're dirty and they can't afford it. That's not what you were saying. It's just less popular. But it sounds like you're saying because they're dirty and they can't afford it because I don't want them in my country club.
Starting point is 01:06:28 That's why. Can you imagine if you belong to a country club? I would hate that so much. You would hate it and they would equally hate you. Yeah, they would too. Either of us would be terrible
Starting point is 01:06:40 in that environment. That wouldn't work out. I want to make so much money that I do though. I know, so do I. And then... just to be rodney dangerfield and ruin everything talk shit to people with inheritances turn up uh bad music on my golf bag talk shit to all the legacies while you're while you have hell's bells playing out of your golf bag and cans of Miller Lite falling off behind you. Pissing on a tree on the fourth green.
Starting point is 01:07:12 Oh, that'd be wonderful. Maybe we need to join... When I pay dues, let me be. We need to join a country club now, the two of us, just for that, to be the worst members they've ever had. We need to make more money and do that. Even if it's the cheapest one, I just want to be a country club now the two of us just for that to be the worst members they've ever had we have to we need to make more money and do that even if it's the cheapest one i just i just want to be a dick so so um uh he by the way pete sampras was the number one player before him is that right yeah so uh
Starting point is 01:07:41 he had he's greek yes is he i don't know i think so p yes? Is he? I don't know. I think so. I thought he was American. Do you know who he's married to? Is he American, Pete Sampras? He might be. I thought he was American. He's married to Veronica Vaughn from Billy Madison. Did you know that?
Starting point is 01:07:54 Oh, shit, the teacher? Yeah, yeah. Oh, wow. She's so hot, he touched her hiney. Wow. He's married to her. Ben married to her for 21 years. Wow, it even worked out.
Starting point is 01:08:04 That's incredible. It did? And they're about the same age. I had no idea. Yeah, I can see. They are. They are. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Pete Sampras had the number one spot for 102 consecutive weeks before that. Wow. So it's been a while. Fuck, that is two years. Yeah, 102 consecutive weeks. That's wild, man. Yeah, he did a great job there. And after this, after he's number one, there was a reception in Chile leading him to the president.
Starting point is 01:08:34 They had a huge parade bringing him to the president. So the president could like a fucking crown him king of Chile. We've never done that. No, no. because you won a tennis tournament and you beat some fucking guy with plugs you beat some guy on a chair yeah you beat some guy from an eos commercial with plugs on the fuck is up with that put him on a chair and walk him down the street to the white house that's what they do man so yeah they went to uh it was uh to la moneda palace around 10 000 people cheering the power center surrounding the palace um yeah
Starting point is 01:09:14 he uh he's so it doesn't get any better than that i mean he is literally being carried to the to the palace to be fucking ordained like a hero of the country grace this is it doesn't get any gracer than this this is as grace as it great as grace gets the graciest grace that ever graced right here showing the most important man in the country uh in the country our most important man in the country is a pretty big deal it really is um problem is the ranking only lasts about four weeks oh no because he's injured and unable to defend at monte carlo so he's knocked out of the number one spot so that's why it was grace also at this point since he's such a national hero you're going to get tabloids and newspapers now they're going to want to talk all sorts of stuff about your
Starting point is 01:10:03 personal life which really pisses him off a lot which isn't great either don't tell people i'm an asshole yeah well well it's different he's private and the santiago santiago gossip pages have talking about him having a relationship with a woman named patricia lorraine who is a chilean beauty queen so they're saying that and you know you know, ooh, look at him. He's with, you know, her and all this sort of thing. So he says, quote, The papers invent too many things about me. They always look for the bad in my life and try to put me down.
Starting point is 01:10:38 They say that before matches I go to discos, get drunk, and stay out till three or four in the morning. And they said, well, are the stories true? And he and he said yes but that's my business not theirs so you know like didn't expect that as a follow-up all right yeah he just says it yes but i didn't want them to report it is what i'm getting at always saying i'm i'm sleeping with prostitutes i mean doing drugs are they true yes believe me a lot obviously but fuck man imagine jeffrey dahmer all these cops saying i'm eating people and killing them is it true absolutely there's dicks in my fridge obviously it's true but you don't have to
Starting point is 01:11:14 you don't have to call me out on it make me feel like a bad guy my mom reads these yeah jesus christ i'm trying to stay private here. What are we talking about? The wait is over. So far, you're not losing. The only thing you're losing is my patience. Quickly, I see that. Bing! The queen of the courtroom is back.
Starting point is 01:11:38 I didn't do anything. You wouldn't know the truth if it came up and slapped you in the face. I see he's not intimidated by anything. I can fix that. New cases. She wanted to fight me. Leave her alone. Okay, so, um... This is not a so.
Starting point is 01:11:54 This is a period. Classic Judy. Did you sleep with her? Yes, Your Honor. You married his cousin. His brother. That's not him. Yes, ma'am.
Starting point is 01:12:04 I would make a beeline for the door. The Emmy Award winning series returns. How did I know that? I have crystal ball in my head. It's an all new season. It's streaming. You can say anything. Judy Justice.
Starting point is 01:12:19 Only on Freebie. So, yeah, that's pretty interesting here. In May, he goes to the quarterfinals of the French Open and eventually loses to Carlos Moya. So, yeah, number one there for a minute, and then it was kind of gone from there. In 1998, later on in the year, after he's been number one taken to the peak he decides to fire his coach larry stefanke just fired him says he wanted to go in a different direction okay he brought you to the number one spot you're came from nowhere direction do you want to go what are you talking about you're going up right now this is yeah don't fire this fucking guy but he
Starting point is 01:13:01 fired him um so yeah he did it he also was the third man in history after michael chang and pete sampras to complete the sunshine double which is winning indian wells and the miami masters in one year he did that in 98 he did that he's also the only man in the open era to have been number one without ever winning a Grand Slam singles tournament. Only man. He didn't win any of the big ones and he still got to number one, which is crazy. His best major result was runner-up at the 98 Australian
Starting point is 01:13:34 Open, where he lost to Peter Korda. Remember that name because it's going to come up at the very end of the show. Complete left field fucking... He just... No, Rios just goes and makes a left-hand turn he's gonna bring up this 98 australian open thing in about 20 years his biggest thing was runner up and he's first overall that's crazy that's in a tournament in a grand slam major that's the only that's as far
Starting point is 01:13:59 as he's gone at one point during this i believe it it was after possibly the Australian Open, a tennis writer asked him in a press conference if he had, quote, Indian blood. Oh, boy. So his response was, what do you think it might be, Jimmy? Is he insulted? Well, you tell me. insulted well you tell me he said do you have indian blood and he said quote what if i called you the son of a whore so i would say that is at a press conference that was what he said he answered a question with a question yes and like a normal question with an insane question insane question what if i called you the son of a whore what the fuck are you sir what the fuck are you talking about the son of a whore jesus god why
Starting point is 01:15:00 are you so insulted by indians sir? He's really, I mean. And so hard. Wow. Holy shit, man. He is. I don't even know. That's an awesome question. That's wild.
Starting point is 01:15:14 I mean, it's a, do you have Indian blood is a dumb question, but rather than saying like, that's not really a good question or, you know, maybe you should figure out a better question or something like that. What are you even asking me? Anything. You that point at that point you're the wrong party you can yeah you know just as a dumb question you can play the high ground at that point make that guy look like an asshole instead he said you want to be an asshole i'll show you how to be an asshole no one's as big an asshole as me. I'll be really insulting and equivocate being an Indian to being a whore.
Starting point is 01:15:55 But what if I said your mom gargles come? Yeah. What about that? Fair. Is that the same answer? Not even. What if I asked you if you were the son of a whore? What if I called you the son of a whore? Okay. Tell you what. Fire it out here let's see what how my what my reaction is i'm not sure did he do this like a press conference like no no tons of reporters just laughter this was a
Starting point is 01:16:17 post-tournament press conference with all of the press there that was covering it i'd have fallen off a chair like you just did when you heard it 20 fucking three years later you had the same reaction what is happening tennis is amazing best sport on earth don't ever let anyone tell you tennis is boring that's what i'd be saying if i was in the press room right there wow oh that is amazing did he say it in spanish or english i want that name i think it was english that's awesome i think it was in english which is even better with a chilean accent yeah that's incredible what if i called you the son of a whore it's beautiful it sounds poetic coming out let's have drinks sir wow if this is what you say sober
Starting point is 01:17:08 yeah right after playing a tennis tournament imagine what you're like at 2 a.m you're a party you're a fucking party at 2 a.m chief we are going to jail tonight together sir let's go salute oh man uh one of the anonymous tennis person here said, quote, Perhaps Rios wasn't the best example for kids since he was involved in many scandals, included being captured drunk many times by the press, fighting in a bar, fighting with the police and even urinating on the guy in a washroom of a disco. We'll get to all that. Don't worry. What? And the day after he missed a flight with with the davis cup team but the guy did something impossible those days being chilean
Starting point is 01:17:51 or south american with an average body type and being number one in the world at the same time so that's the positive on him yeah you know the negative here um the positive is he pees on people he pees on people but still at least he did it at least he got there he doesn't have state he doesn't have stage fright you got to give him that that's a great point he's proud of that thing he just whips it out and pisses everywhere that's i would never show it to another man in in a way of assaulting him and you have to wait for it for me to be like stay still stay still just hold on or you have to i gotta push a minute or you have to chase chase him with your
Starting point is 01:18:32 dick out and your hand on it as you're running that's a that's an ugly sight no one wants to see that that's aggressive that's very aggressive it doesn't look like what it is so this is just gonna pee on him that's all i was only trying to pee on him i swear to god there's nothing sexual about this so uh cliff drysdale who's an espn commentator and former pro tennis player he said quote there was nobody in all the sports that i met who was more negative he had the biggest chip on his shoulder one One time I walked up to him knowing his reputation. He looked at me looked at my extended hand and walked
Starting point is 01:19:09 away. He walked over to the elevator and went up to his hotel room. It was the damnedest thing I ever saw just walked away from a handshake. I was like no and even say no reason yeah, here's a guy named Craig Gabriel who's a journalist. He said quote very talented. I never thought much of Marcelo Rios. I thought he was obnoxious, an obnoxious, rude individual. He had a world of talent. He was a glorious tennis player to watch. But I hated to watch him because of his personality. I mean, there was just something about the guy. He rubbed everybody the wrong way. And it was very unfortunate because we got a lot of wonderful players from South America and all the ones I've had any sort of contact with or any
Starting point is 01:19:48 association with have all been fantastic people to deal with. Unfortunately, Rios was the exception, which, which as I say, is a great shame because his personality, behavior and attitude, unfortunately got in the way of his great tennis.
Starting point is 01:20:04 Here's somebody, an anonymous person talking one of the tennis guys talking about in singapore quote in singapore rios was with a girl at the time and i saw him involved in a major makeout session in the elevator it was really rude you just don't do that sort of thing in singapore no they'll cane you over there decorum is a decorum is a big deal in singapore i don't know if they'll cane you for making out in the elevator but yeah you will get you will get fucking chat you know chided by the police for that sort of shit like you don't fuck around in singapore yeah i remember the kid got caned for like i don't know drawn like a he like not it was some sort of like he drew some sort of
Starting point is 01:20:40 graffiti so they caned him fairly recently right that was the 90s it was the 90s yeah snl did like it's all the jokes were for like a year and a half where you know that guy getting caned and all that shit so um uh here's another one uh from him is chris chaffey uh chaffey who was a fan he said i remember a fan at the u.s open told me he tried to have rio sign a tennis card for him and he took it and drew a giant x with the sharpie over the card and gave it back pretty solid autograph uh yeah not not quite here's a someone who was a ball kid in indianapolis for him because they're all assigned they have their own ball kids for their matches quote i was a ball kid for marcelo rios at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis.
Starting point is 01:21:28 I could understand a lot of Spanish, and the things he said were not appropriate to say to a minor. Holy shit. He's getting one over. Yeah, he's calling them names and shit. Every year I would get as many players as possible to autograph my event t-shirt. I don't have a Rios autograph because i didn't want it so yeah i he called me a twat in spanish yeah i was like what fuck you cindy schlurm schmurler jesus schmurler that's your name and she's a journalist schmurler and you're like i'm going with schmurler there's four consonants to start that name four c s c it's s c h m that's too many schmurler um she's probably married into
Starting point is 01:22:14 that poor thing i hope i for her sake i hope so that means she could get out of it if she wants otherwise it's so quote marcelo rio seemed to do everything he could to make people hate him. This is all on purpose. One person that definitely hates him would probably be Monica Salas. What did he say to her? Well, they were in the cafeteria and they were online to get food and she was in front of him. Did he make an eat joke, James? And he said said move your
Starting point is 01:22:47 fat ass he did not not a joke he said move your fat ass and she said what and he said you're too fat to play tennis move your fat ass she was like top five in the world for women world-class tennis player you know just you know nope move your fat ass this is fucking crazy dude what the fuck is he he also said he has no respect for female players and that they're they're super easy it's super easy to be number one with the women he said so whatever oh my god maybe for if you went in there but not for that's equal competition you know maybe if pete sampras went over to the women's side yeah it'd be a little easier for him but michael jordan could easily dunk on every w nba player today yeah that's not today what are you doing yeah because he could dunk on all the nba
Starting point is 01:23:40 players when he played so it didn't matter it's yeah if you can beat all the oh my god so uh cellist was like what the fuck like she didn't even know what to first she was like huh and then she heard it clear and was like what like she didn't even know how to respond to it she just stood there and he like went around her and went and got his food it's fucking insane wow so the this guy also says uh uh that uh we went out to eat, if the waiter ever made a mistake on his order, he would get so angry. You just get really angry and yell and scream. He said he was arrogant, but in some ways for tennis, you must be. Which it's not the way. No, this is where you get like the fighter thing, like the boxer thing where they have to have a certain level of i'm the best and i could kick anybody's ass but at the same time how do you be
Starting point is 01:24:29 a normal human being and do that people in tennis seem to be able to pull it off just fine though this guy you know i don't know i don't hear these stories about michael chang coming up all the time to you. Thomas Johansson is another guy here. He was the former Australian Open winner. He's a Swedish guy, so it's probably Johansson, actually. He said that this was a funny tennis memory here. He said, quote, all the guys have different humors outside of the court. A player that I really like to watch was Rios. I think he was one of the best players ever because I remember one year when he was going to play Thomas Muster in Rome in 1998, and I saw the press conference before the match. And they asked him, so how are you going to be able to beat Muster because he only had lost one or two matches on clay so far? And Rios said, the guy should be happy if he gets like a couple of games.
Starting point is 01:25:29 And Rios went out the next day and killed him one and two. And that's that for me is unbelievable. I really like to watch him. I didn't really like I didn't like to play him, though, but I really like to watch him. And they said, well, why don't you like playing him? And he said he could make you feel like it was the first time you were standing on a tennis court you know he said so i hated to play him you could get killed by him easily and you could have played even if you play a good match so that's what audrey agassi's dad said too he said i've never ever seen andre make more wrong footed shots than
Starting point is 01:26:00 against rios which is really putting your weight on the wrong side because you were anticipating the ball someplace else. Didn't expect it. That's what he does. He goes, he gets everybody so off guard that they look like they're confused. They look like they're amateur tennis players. Like, if everyone plays, you know, like there's no, he doesn't play the normal flow of the normal game.
Starting point is 01:26:18 It's just very, very strange. Doesn't even look like him. Yeah. Now, Johansson also said, quote, sometimes he looked like he didn't want to play sometimes he really didn't want to play but when he really wanted to play you didn't want to be on the other side of the net so if he felt like it you know whatever um so does he tank does he throw does he throw matches out if he doesn't feel like he feels like playing well he said quote
Starting point is 01:26:43 tanking is not the right word well maybe i tanked a few times so yes is the answer yes he does at least he's gonna give you the straightforward on it i mean right you're what if i called you the son of a whore how's that there you go real so the 98 french open he's asked will it bother you to have 15 000 french people cheering against you he says quote no i'm looking forward to it i'm at my best when it's just me against the world so that's how he needs to feel he's like he's you know he requires it he requires it so there's one here's a interesting this is a girl named Rachel Cormel who was a 16 year old tennis fan when she had an interaction with him.
Starting point is 01:27:30 And this was during an opening match at Indian Wells. She would squeal loudly on every point won by the other guy. She would like scream really loud in celebration like really loud above the whole crowd. You know like a young girl can scream. really loud above the whole crowd. You know, like a girl, a young girl can scream. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:44 And so apparently, um, so much so that people are asking her, like, are you from Germany? Are you rooting for, it was like Heinrich Dreekman. They're like,
Starting point is 01:27:52 are you rooting for Heinrich Dreekman? And she said, no, I'm not rooting for Dreekman. I'm rooting against Rios. And they said, why, why do you hate him so much?
Starting point is 01:28:03 And she said a year ago after a practice session, she asked him for an autograph, and he wouldn't give her one. She said, quote, he was nasty and rude. Now it's payback time. And my payback is shrieking in his face. Shrieking at him. Just fucking lousy. fucking that's a solid that's a solid payback because when you when watching golf if you hate somebody just cheering for somebody that's that you're playing against it it feels good it really does at the open here cheering for the other guy when tiger's on the field it feels great yeah
Starting point is 01:28:37 people like that shit tigers like him too that he requires that that negativity to do great that's why i have to feel why he does so great you have to feel it a lot of people feel like that a lot of guys feel like that jordan was big like that he like going into an opposing place and you know feeling the hate that fueled him a lot of guys are fueled like that just as much as he likes the the the crowd cheering for him in chicago he loves hearing the boos in detroit same shit yeah if. If it feeds some people, some people it shrinks them and some people it grows them like one of those fucking shrinky dinks in the oven. Depends on what happens.
Starting point is 01:29:11 Yeah. So 1998, there's an event in Stuggart, Stuttgart. I don't know. It's in Europe somewhere. It's probably Stuttgart, right? Maybe. Sure. Why not?
Starting point is 01:29:20 There's a lot in Italy. Stuttgart. He's fined. He's caught speeding. Okay. I don't know how fast he was going, but he's fined $10,000 for speeding. How fast? Was he driving a rocket?
Starting point is 01:29:34 How fast could you possibly? Did he drive it like over a group of school children? $10,000 is a lot for speeding. Did he break the atmosphere? How do you get a ten thousand dollar fine you break the sound barrier the fines go up i guess i'm not sure if that was like a fucking jet maybe it was like a like a construction zone within a school zone yeah within like i don't know how it worked but ten thousand dollars he's fine fines doubled sign was out yeah it finds tripled
Starting point is 01:30:02 like and they just infinite growth on the signs. I don't know what happened here. But as we know, he's not a great driver as he drives out of rental car parking lots at 50 miles an hour with police diving out of the way. So here's a guy, Ili Ntase. I don't know. Nastase. Nastase. I don't know how the fuck you say this, this guy hates marcello rios and it's
Starting point is 01:30:25 hilarious he said he's a hall of famer a tennis hall of famer this guy so he's been around he says this is a great quote quote he's the worst prick i ever met that is wonderful however whatever ethnicity that is he has mastered the english language he found prick the worst prick i've ever met that's amazing that really incredible that sums it up right there boy i mean that's there's a whole game he said the players of today probably have the same opinion of him ask all the players what they think of him. You'll get the same thing. When somebody doesn't sign autographs for the kids, that is a prick for me. That's it.
Starting point is 01:31:13 That's his qualification. Then they said, well, what about his game, though? Because other guys are like, I hate him, but I like watching him. What about his game? He said, I don't give a shit. I don't look at him. I don't give a shit. I don't look at him. I don't give a shit. I don't look at him.
Starting point is 01:31:31 For me, he's an idiot. That's what he says. He's fucking great. I don't give a shit. I don't look at him. For me, he's an idiot. I want that interview so bad. I love this guy.
Starting point is 01:31:47 He says, I don't know what else to tell about him and that's the first time i say something bad about somebody like that i think he was the worst thing for tennis he did not deserve to be number one uh for one or two days or anything to live the to live with the other players like he did terrible he was really the worst i never say anything about anybody like this uh but about him i have to say this i'm sorry i don't give a shit never talked shit a day in my life but man wouldn't say shit if i've had a mouthful of it but fucking fuck that guy fuck that guy he is a twat actually he's the worst prick I ever met. An idiot, terrible, really the worst, and the worst thing for tennis. Those are all, and didn't deserve to be number one.
Starting point is 01:32:33 Those are all the negatives. Yeah, but how good is he? I don't give a shit. I don't give a shit. I don't watch him. To me, he's an idiot. That's what he said. That's incredible.
Starting point is 01:32:41 Then he goes on to say, quote, Marcello is a finely calibrated switch a swiss watch missing a couple of wheels he said one of those missing wheels is in his head unfortunately that's the same guy said that that is fucking i like that guy a lot he is the man i like him i hope his family gets some great christmas gifts he deserves to be in the hall of fame too bad i couldn't vote for him to be in even more of a hall of fame so here's another uh this is an anonymous worker for the transportation worked in the transportation wing of the key biscayne tournament for many years so one of the tournament people he said
Starting point is 01:33:21 i worked at transportation for the key biscayne tournament for many years one year rios had a tournament car and he didn't return it after he lost his match we almost had to call the police and have him held at the airport to get the car back jeez where's where's the cargo don't care i don't care i don't give a shit yeah oh my god here's bud collins who's a hall of fame journalist and we'll hear from his wife also because she's a journalist too he says quote very disagreeable player very negative memories he was rude impolite he would tank matches he did it at the u.s pro in boston one year it was so obvious i said they should have played the match in a swimming pool one time in longwood cricket club in boston again the kid came up with a pencil or a pen or something with something to autograph.
Starting point is 01:34:09 And Rios just took it and broke it in half. Jesus Christ. He was just a bad guy. When he became number one, he was on the balcony with the president of his country. I said, maybe this will make him a better behaved guy. His attitude, attitude though was fuck you fuck everybody but me maybe they're right maybe he did need to be right he did i mean maybe something bad needed to happen to this guy because whenever good things happen he just got to be a
Starting point is 01:34:37 bigger and bigger asshole right but he was a huge asshole when he was 17 too at the same time when nobody gave him shit so he's just a dick and that's amazing here's his wife anita clausen who's also a journalist she says about rios quote he was a disgusting person not about her husband about rios that would have been much different he was a disgusting person it was i was how it was horrible how he treated bud that's the guy we just talked about people told me he would break the kids pens when they asked for an autograph or sign his name over the other players names that the kid had gotten in autographs for oh wow to fuck them all up um he said she said he was just terrible one time at a press conference at the estoril portugal tournament rios was on the podium being asked a question.
Starting point is 01:35:26 And then Bud asked him a question. And he just said to the ATP rep guy, maybe it was Greg Charco, he said, I won't answer questions from that man. And everybody in the audience, all the other press corps, just gasped at this, that anybody would be so rude to Bud Collins, of all things. And 36 papers wrote about it the next day what an asshole he was so that's what happens there he's a he's a dick and that's horrible terrible miserable worst prick i've ever met idiot like my god that is wild does anybody say anything nice
Starting point is 01:36:00 about his play there's a couple people in the book that were like, he was nice to me, you know, like backstage and blah, blah, blah. But that's like real basic shit that you just say. Those are people that didn't really, nobody was like, I was his best friend for five years. He's a great guy. No one was ever like that. It was always people in passing. Like, I mean, I played with him. We don't even speak the same native language.
Starting point is 01:36:20 So he said hello and nodded our heads. But good guy, I think. Hilarious. native language so he said hello and nodded our heads but good guy i think you know hilarious so uh at one point they're the at the french open and they have the adidas hospitality tent over there and during that they have the adidas sponsored players and they're sitting there and they're getting questions from the press and you know they're doing like a little you're plugging your adidas and you're talking about the tournament so it's a press conference with three players up on the stage they're in these big high tall chairs like they're on like the way they put it here like they're on the dating game which is a good way to put it so they have them all there they got the press there the adidas
Starting point is 01:36:57 guy and trying to you know make good press for all the players and everything he asks each of them to say what they respect in each other's game oh so he has positive sportsmanship this will look great and it's positive shit to say about a quote from another athlete on your athlete that you can use to sell their shit better because this is these people are paying you tennis is tennis is about this is about the sponsorships not about your career earnings it's just the way it is so he uh they asked him that and what parts of whatever so uh stefan edberg was there and he said he really respected steffi graff's forehand okay so steffi said how uh it was wonderful how edberg could edberg could charge to the net and be so comfortable around the net.
Starting point is 01:37:52 And then Rios, who's the young kid there, they said, you know, well, what do you like about them? And he said, quote, no, there's nothing in their games that I would want. That I would want, which is the worst way to say it, I feel like. Nothing in their games that I would want. Like if their games were a garage sale, I would like pick through their boxes and be like nope none of this shit not even for a quarter i'm not interested i'm sunny didn't say something about stephy graph's nose by the way she could drop a couple i'm just saying like great cans yeah she got nice cans on her i like to watch him jiggle when she runs
Starting point is 01:38:26 so everybody freaks everyone the press is just like what is it like they were waiting for the punch line like he was gonna go no i'm just kidding actually he's got a great bag she's this and that and he was just like next question and this isn't to the press the adidas guy asked him that this guy pays him a fucking salary like what are you doing say something nice and move the fuck on stupid it's this is for a check so um yeah it was really really odd so some people said maybe it was too much money too many sponsors uh one One guy, Luis Miles, said, quote, People did not quite understand that when they were watching Marcelo play, they were watching a corporate machine. When Marcelo stepped onto the court, so did Prince, Yanex, Nike, Adidas, and the myriad of sponsors that supported him at one point or another in his career.
Starting point is 01:39:21 The problem was that while most players started grabbing the attention of one or two sponsors during the early teen years, everyone wanted to jump on the Chino train. At such a young age, I believe this took some of the fun out of the sport for him. This consequently made him very angry. These are the biggest sponsors in the world. He's got them all
Starting point is 01:39:40 at his beck and call. Absolutely. He's making a fortune off of that, but it's almost like he's trying to fortune off of that but he's he almost like it's almost like he's trying to get them to drop him or something it's a weird thing he resents it um they said i do believe that was the chat where oh that's right somebody asked him if he preferred tennis or sex do you prefer tennis or sex and he said quote depends on what type of sex it is oh boy i mean if i'm being raped in a jail tennis definitely if it's with three girls in a hot tub i prefer sex
Starting point is 01:40:13 so um then one person said no one knows his real personality anyway but but no one is 100% nice or bad. We're all a combination. But some people, this is way skewed, to 97 to 3 in some cases. So September 1998, he is training at the tennis academy in the Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy in Florida. Hey, everybody. I'm Nick fucking Bolletieri.
Starting point is 01:40:44 Come on over here. I'm going gonna teach you fucking tennis forehand backhand how to tip properly at a strip club i'm gonna teach you everything you need to know about life you come over here nick boletieri remember this fucking name because i'm gonna teach you what you need to know racket strong with dry spaghetti oh i'm gonna that's the other thing you make some pasta your rack it's perfect to hang you put it around the little things in there it hangs perfect it's gonna dry better so yeah old nicky b over here is gonna teach you how to your forehand your backhand your uh you know a little grab ass
Starting point is 01:41:16 i do it all over here be honest we're better with our backhand we're real good hey i like i like to look at a girl's backhand if you know what I'm talking about, see what I'm dealing with. So while he's working out here and training in September of 98, he meets a Costa Rican young lady named Juliana Sotela, which sounds good. That's nice, right? One small issue with this. What is it? September 98. He's almost, right? One small issue with this. What is it? September 98. He's almost 23 at this moment in time.
Starting point is 01:41:50 She is 15. Oh, no. No, no, no. Not good. And let's not all go, well, it's South America. That's okay. No, she's 15. He's 22.
Starting point is 01:42:00 Put your daughter at 15 and then have a 22-year-old come over. And does it matter what language your daughter knows spanish does that make a difference at that point no it's fucked up the origin of her and her name sounds fantastic and then you throw you should have put 15 year old at the beginning that negates all all any emotion that those words all all all of that shit so uh anyway later on in the year in october 98 he the next month it must have worked i guess because he goes on to beat andre agassi again later that year so i guess that's good andre's got nothing for him no it's hard he's got a i think it's pretty
Starting point is 01:42:37 even record against agassi in their whole careers 1999 an interview with rios following a U.S. Open match win here. So he won the first round against Martin Dam, D-A-M-M. He wins that. It's August 30th, 1999. And there's three or four reporters there for Rios. That's about it. And one reporter says it was a tough match. What happened?
Starting point is 01:43:01 And he said, quote, he played pretty good. I slowed down my game a little bit. But like I say, I'm not hitting very very good i'm not hitting very good the ball really nice to win like that they said who were your childhood heroes and he said what is that i think he didn't hear not like what is a childhood hero what is that and they said who were your childhood heroes and he said i don't understand what you say. So it just doesn't translate, I guess. So they said, tennis people you admired when you were growing up. And he said, oh, okay, nobody. Got it.
Starting point is 01:43:37 Not one. Great. They said, oh, okay. Well, what are your hobbies and interests? And he said, nothing. That's it? Just one word? This conversation sucks.
Starting point is 01:43:49 It's not great. And they said, quote, what is your greatest sports moment? Obviously, he's going to have something that was good to him. Remember that throne the people of Chile carried me on to meet the president? That was a pretty good one. He said, quote, I don't remember, man. Unbelievable. So the journalist said, come on.
Starting point is 01:44:10 And he said, what do you want me to tell you? And the journalist said, just answer the questions. And he said, don't ask me questions like that. Don't ask me dumb questions. So then the guy says, what's your favorite movies? And he doesn't respond and instead sits his ass up and turns his chair in another direction away from the man boy does he hate small talk just not answering questions this is crazy a blind date with him must be so uncomfortable imagine that shit
Starting point is 01:44:43 getting to know him. What's your mom's name? Fuck you. That's her name. What's your mom's name? You don't need to know that question. Do you have any brothers or sisters? I don't remember, man.
Starting point is 01:44:57 Are we going to fuck or what? What are we doing? Are we fucking or what are we doing? This is amazing. This small talk is terrible it's the worst man i swear to god he hasn't even gotten arrested yet in this he should have been a couple of times but still um they said uh what made you become is another reporter what made you become a tennis player and play like you do when you had no one to really follow you just liked it they
Starting point is 01:45:22 took off on him saying nobody he said said, quote, I think so. It was a long time ago, so I don't even remember. You're 23. You're 23. It's not that long ago. No, it really isn't. You could ask, well, before he died, Hank Aaron, what made you like baseball? And he'll be like, when I was six years old, there was a field and I saw I heard the crack of a bat.
Starting point is 01:45:42 There'd be something that he could remember. Anything. When he's 82. This guy's acting like he's 65 and has dementia and has been boxing instead of playing fucking tennis so they said did you follow tennis as a child did you look at wimbledon did you look at the u.s open and he said quote in chile i never followed tennis it was a lot of soccer no tennis so i never followed tennis and they said lot of soccer no tennis so i never followed tennis and they said you play soccer too and he said a little bit sometimes shit we're trying so hard to get anything out of you really try now that somebody has another
Starting point is 01:46:19 explanation maybe it's this this is david law he's the atp communications manager so he's the one who has to translate like what this guy's trying to do so he says quote i've worked with marcello since 1998 first in my capacity as an atp communications manager and now on the atp champions tour i believe that marcello is an innately shy person he doesn't like a lot of fuss being made around him and i don't think he's ever understood why people might be interested in talking to him when he has played badly and lost. Those are the main reasons why I think he has sometimes come across as difficult during his career. I've had instances where he's looked at me as if I'm crazy for asking him to go to press conferences, and while it wasn't much fun at the time, I understand that A, players are not happy after
Starting point is 01:47:04 they lose, and the last thing they want to do is talk about it, but that's part of your job. Yeah. And, B, in Marcello's case, he just doesn't understand the point of talking when he is lost. Had this been explained to him very early on, perhaps his demeanor would have been very different. I guess. Sports people are the weirdest because they hate the press. They hate the media. They hate them, hate them, hate them, hate them.
Starting point is 01:47:27 But literally, if they weren't there, you wouldn't be doing what you're doing because you'd make more money doing something else. There's only, the only reason you're there is because these people are giving you, nothing else gets free advertisement like that. Free. You don't have to pay for that. There's swarms of people around you wanting to disseminate your shit to the world without you paying how what's that pr worth a
Starting point is 01:47:51 literal network devoted to it in america multiple 24 hours a day that's all it is tons of them tons of them it's it's fucking crazy so if you a sports person, the media is definitely a necessary fucking evil because without it, you don't have shit. So anyway, he said, having said all that, even though we had the occasional run in, he's not a bad guy, really spoiled. Yes, but I but I quite like the fact that he tells you what he's thinking, no matter how uncensored or on PR that may be. It can sometimes upset and offend people, but if you actually listen to the words, he's just telling you what he thinks. I once asked him,
Starting point is 01:48:31 Marcella, why can't you be a little nicer to everyone? He told me, quote, because I don't want to be fake. If you're nice to everyone, the same no matter what the situation, it's not real, it's fake. To some extent, I can understand and agree with that. It's also called society, and you can't walk around angry because some other shit happened and take it out on
Starting point is 01:48:50 somebody else because that's that's if everybody did that it would be we're almost there but if it actually was there it would be fucking bedlam the only thing that keeps society together is is that is something as your your politeness that's it there's also common decency and common courtesy of like this is this guy's job yes like you've never seen steve martin just be a dick to somebody that asks him a question it's because he has common decency and he understands that this is this person's job or this is what this person's doing at the moment and it's just consideration yeah consider somebody no this is this is like this is like bill belichick like i'm gonna be a dick and i'm gonna fuck yeah consider somebody no this is this is like this is like bill belichick
Starting point is 01:49:25 like i'm gonna be a dick and i'm gonna fuck with people for no reason yeah like i'm gonna show that i'm in charge here i'm gonna show like that kind of shit which who gives a shit so you don't have to be fake to be uh decent to people no that's not at all that's I mean. Even if you're not feeling it, you could try. So in 2000, he is awarded by his country of Chile the award for being the best Chilean athlete of the 20th century. Wow. That is wild. So, yeah, the best of the 20th century. So that tells you how many famous athletes. A hundred years of soccer
Starting point is 01:50:05 yeah and all kinds of other shit and he's it that's it it's just me i'm the best so he begins to have injury problems in 2000 uh that's when he starts having an ankle issue he has to have a minor surgery he's got a wrist problem his back starts to bother him he starts the injuries start to tick up here so um yeah july 2000 he is disqualified from a los angeles atp event and fined five thousand dollars for yelling fuck you to the chair umpire yeah he later said though that he wasn't saying it to the ump. He was saying it to himself. Okay. He said, quote, I said it to me.
Starting point is 01:50:51 Because he didn't like the shot he made. The 2000 Olympics, he has selected by his country to be the standard bearer for the opening ceremony. He's going to be their guy. This is who we choose to represent us at the Olympics in the opening ceremony he's going to be their guy this is who we choose to represent us at the olympics in the opening ceremony but at the last minute he refused to do it arguing that the chilean olympic committee had left his parents without the promised tickets for the ceremony so he's not doing it and he and he took a step out and didn't do it my family can't be there so no they well i said lower level for my family these are
Starting point is 01:51:25 loge what's this low shit what is this mezzanine bullshit we're not doing this we swear that the best ones in the house front row next to the stage that's where i want them that's where we're doing it so yeah so he's he's starting to get some injuries here. Reaches the semifinals at the Hamburg Masters, but loses it there. Finishes December number 37 in the world. Oh. It's dropping a little bit. So things aren't going great for him with all the injuries and things. So when things aren't going well, what do you do, Jimmy?
Starting point is 01:52:03 You got to get married. You got to get married you gotta get married you gotta marry the costa rican teenager you met two years ago yeah he's been with her since she was 15 now she's 17 and apparently ready to get married yeah yeah uh this is disgusting i would say this is pretty fucking gross uh he is 25. She is 17. That's weird. Yes, I would. Most everybody with a 17 year old daughter, if a 25 year old wanted to marry her, you would. They would have a hard time finding his head.
Starting point is 01:52:33 I would imagine. Think about a junior in high school at the second semester or the first semester of her senior year. And her boyfriend or husband is 20 fucking 25. Get out of my house. That's disgusting. No, don't come around here. Oh, no. this would be you'd be scared to come around here so that's what he does though gets married december of 2000 um at one point here he this is crazy i don't know what happened some sort of accident he ran over his physical trainer with his jeep that year and really fucking mangled his foot like the guy
Starting point is 01:53:06 never walked right again oh he ran him over he ran over a goddamn man with a jeep um yeah and then he fired him as his trainer later on after he ran him over and mangled his foot he fired him he broke my mirror oh yeah that's true what are you gonna going to do? Fired. Fuck. So then there's an incident that somebody relayed about a girl in a hotel. Quote, one night I was hanging out with Rios in a bar in Indian Wells. This is in Florida. And he brought back three girls to the hotel room. He brought one of them into his suite. And in about a minute minute we heard her screaming
Starting point is 01:53:45 and then she came running out of the room i tried to ask him what happened but he wouldn't tell me he was a man of few words yeah i guess so or a man of a little embarrassment yeah later on he would say that she tried to was trying to steal his tennis racket so he grabbed her and she screamed and then ran out so i don't know why she would want his tennis racket but maybe she's a real memorabilia hawk she was just looking for some good stuff pawn stars are gonna love this one oh they're gonna love it a journalist named enrique cano says quote rios was sitting inside the car with his girlfriend in miami a blonde model from chile a little boy asked him to sign his paper and he signed the paper and throws it through the window with a pen and paper saying thank you he just like
Starting point is 01:54:31 threw it back out at him here you go but he signed it another time in miami in 98 a journalist roberto napo of bbc latin america went to ask him three questions because the the journalist arranged with the atp the three questions because the journalist arranged with the ATP the three questions after the press conference. So they arranged. He only has to answer three questions. And Marcelo Rio disliked, didn't like to do it, so he was shouting, why? Why do I have to talk to these people?
Starting point is 01:54:58 Why do I have to talk to them, too? I did a press conference. Now I've got to talk with them in the room. I have to talk to these fucking three people. This is bullshit. So they said, hey, look, we made a deal with them that they're only gonna answer ask you three questions that's it and then you can go that's all okay be cool about it so he says okay i will do is what he tells the guy okay i will do so the journalist asks him one question he looks and says yes second journalist asks him a question. He looks and says yes. Second journalist asked him a question.
Starting point is 01:55:26 He says no. Third one asked the question and he says yes. Thank you. And he got up and left. Yes. No. Yes. Peace out.
Starting point is 01:55:35 That's what he did. Bye. Then there's a story here of a little girl here. A 12 year old girl or so. This is Gabriel Matias, who's a coach and journalist from Argentina. He said, at the tournament in Buenos Aires, I saw a girl
Starting point is 01:55:54 about 12 years old run up to Rios on the practice court. Good thing he didn't ask her for her hand in marriage, Jimmy. Don't worry. I heard you go, oh. She asked for the autograph. Rios took the paper and pen and was about to sign. He suddenly threw it on the ground. He said no, and the girl started to cry, and she said to Rios, quote, I hope you break
Starting point is 01:56:15 both your legs and never play again. Then Rios called her a little motherfucker. Okay. then rios called her a little motherfucker okay and then said quote don't cry why are you crying for be tough be tough he said i hope i break my legs little motherfucker and then you called it then i called your motherfucker and i think he realized that other people were watching him have an argument with a 12 year old girl. And he's like, this doesn't look good. What are you crying for? Be tough.
Starting point is 01:56:49 Probably tussled her hair. You're going to be fine. There you go. Why are you crying? Why are you crying? Be tough. Wow. He says, I don't know why Rios would do that.
Starting point is 01:56:59 Why do that? Why not just give her the autograph? He could be so illogical. He that Rios says, quote, I'm nice sometimes. In Chile, there's even a lot of kids who want to be just like me. Yeah. I bet. Little motherfuckers.
Starting point is 01:57:14 Little motherfuckers, they want to be just like me. He was in a car accident. Somebody here says, quote, did you hear about the car accident? I don't remember where exactly it was, but they give you a car for the tournament so you can drive your own car. And you don't need taxis or drivers. He took the car one night, got drunk, crashed the car, totaled the car with some girl. And the ATP covered up the whole story and it never got out. So I feel like what we have on the record is not all that happened with this guy also.
Starting point is 01:57:42 He's been had a lot of should have been arrested about eight more times he also says publicly that he thinks the atp protects high profile americans uh from doping he says that they're taking performance enhancing drugs he says i know that if uh nandrolone were found on agassi they would not disclose it he is very prominent and very popular player. And if he were to fall, the world of tennis would fall with him. The ATP would not say it. They are such a large, dependent organization that it would be a problem if Agassi or Sampras tested positive. He says, we, the South Americans, have discussed it repeatedly. It's a complicated subject. I do not have a problem saying it. We always said, who publicly certifies
Starting point is 01:58:26 the doping tests of Agassi or Sampras? I would love to be able to see and certify Agassi's doping tests, because now I currently have no idea who is doing the test, and who decides it, who gets it done, and who doesn't. I know that if they were to find
Starting point is 01:58:42 Nandrolone on Agassi, they wouldn't say anything, though. It would taint his reputation and bring tennis down dramatically. ATP would not say it. It's such a large organization, and that would be a problem if Agassi tested positive. Did you say it's called Androlone? Nandrolone, he's saying. Oh, all right.
Starting point is 01:58:58 Nandrolone. I thought it was literally named after Andre Agassi. It's named after him, yes. It's Agassi. It's named after him, yes. It's Agassi-owned. They would never tell you if Pete Treloan was found on Pete Sampras. Never, never.
Starting point is 01:59:13 Or Changreloan on Michael Chang. It would be anything there. Tough one. It's a tough one. So 2001, Rome, Italy. He loses earlier in the day. He loses straights in straight sets. That was one of his tanks to Spain's one Carlos Ferreira in the second round of the Rome Masters Series tournament here.
Starting point is 01:59:35 He is later on. He's thrown out of a party for being belligerent and loud and a dickhead. and loud and a dickhead. So at that point, he and four of his friends, all Chileans, including a coach and an ATP official, end up going out, getting super drunk in the historic Trastevere region, or district, Trastevere district. Police say the five of them hopped into a taxi,
Starting point is 02:00:02 even though the driver said, no, no, no, you can't come in. I'm only licensed to carry four passengers, no you can't come in i'm only licensed to carry four passengers so you can't come in they all squished in anyway yeah so the driver stopped another taxi and offloaded two of the passengers on them and they did it that way so it was rios the coach and the atp official in the first taxi so during the trip they were fucking around and one of them hit the driver jesus christ so he stops and it calls the police to come in police show up uh two police officers are called to to figure this whole thing out so he fought them as well he decided to fight the police officers and uh yeah so he's arrested for resisting arrest and
Starting point is 02:00:47 all sorts of shit here uh now the atp what do you think they got to suspend him at least for this this looks terrible yeah he says quote they say quote we have fined him ten thousand dollars for unsportsmanlike conduct because we consider the players party to be a part of the tournament that's it unsports like he's fighting police apparently he said i won't go into exactly what happened there but he was asked to leave as far as we're as far as we're concerned this is the end of the matter for what happened on site we're still investigating what happened once he left the party that's fighting the cops so he caused a ruckus got thrown out of the tennis club's own party, and then fucking went out and fought police and a cab driver.
Starting point is 02:01:26 So resisting arrest, attacking two policemen, injuring public officials and resisting arrest are the official charges. And yeah, they say he's not even number one anymore. He needs to chill the fuck out. They're going to stop covering for him very soon here. So, yeah, he's he's screwed with that. And June 2001, his daughter is born the daughter is born and uh named costanza like george which is amazing yeah can't stand you i'd let i don't know how everyone doesn't call her that because that's a child, Costanza, a daughter. So 2001, he wins two ATP singles titles in Doha and Hong Kong.
Starting point is 02:02:10 So he's doing well. But then he has some weaker ones. He has an ankle operation, drops out of the top 50 in the world for the first time since he was a teenager. He's having problems. He returns in October to play a challenger event in Santiago. And he ends up winning a tournament down there. And then he also reaches the finals in a doubles tournament in Scottsdale. Finishes the year at number 39 in the world. Wow.
Starting point is 02:02:42 Not terrible. Having a comeback. 2002, he has a back injury that he starts out well, then has a back injury, and it's the same injury that keeps recurring, and he keeps having a problem with it, and he has to kind of spend most of the year on the shelf here. He goes to the quarterfinals in the Australian Open, semifinals at the Miami Masters, final at the Stockholm tournament, and that's about it. So he would finish in the top 25 for the first time since 99, though.
Starting point is 02:03:12 He's number 24 at the end of the year. All right. But he's got injuries that are left over from 99. Oh, let's hear from Nick Bolletieri. Hey, come over here to my fucking club. I'm going to teach you how to live life. Oh, it's a spaghetti racket. Oh, it's a spaghetti racket. Hey, it's a spaghetti racket.
Starting point is 02:03:27 Here you go. He says, quote, I believe the player who has probably disappointed me the most was Marcelo Rios. I'm just disappointed. Are you mad at me? Hey, Pops, you mad at me? Nah, I'm disappointed. You're a fucking bum. That's what bothers me.
Starting point is 02:03:43 I thought you was better than that, and you're not. He says, he disappointed me because, this is so Italian, he disappointed me because God really awarded him hands and eyes and feet that were just beyond description. He never lived up to his expectations, both as a role model for the game and to really fulfill the talent he had as a player. I believe he was probably the person. Remember, Larry Stefanky did a great job with him as well.
Starting point is 02:04:11 I believe Marcellus Rios could have been a far better player than what he is. He could have been a contender. He could have been a contender. Instead, he's a fucking bum. Disgraciad. He's a fucking bum. Disgraciad. He's a fucking bum. So here's Fred Stoll, who's a Hall of Famer and commentator. He said, yes, I got to know Marcelo reasonably well.
Starting point is 02:04:34 He's a nice kid, but was, I don't know if you want to say, had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Sounds like it. I think you can probably say that. But a tough fellow to get to know. A lot of the players will tell you that just through the television espn i was able to meet him and thought he was a great talent and it's tough to see a talent like that through injury get out of it he was a natural stroke maker oh boy that sounds really gross along the lines of john mackinrow one of
Starting point is 02:05:02 the greatest but again when he reached number one, he couldn't handle it. And by his own admission, he said, I don't want to be number one. I want to be a spoiler. I want to be someone out there who's knocking off the one or two player in the world. See, that's so much easier of a role. It's so much easier. I want to be number eight and just being, don't expect anything out of me. And then when I do great, then it's great.
Starting point is 02:05:25 It's so much easier to go. I'm going to go out there i got nothing to fucking lose i got it's all the pressures on them i got nothing to lose being number one and staying number one that's hard that sucks everyone's shooting for you you have to be the most together out there um so yeah he said i don't think he really had the fire in his belly that's needed to remain at the top and be a champion we used to run into each other at the tournaments and that that's what he got out of it. So it makes sense. 2003, this is Natalia Baez, who's a competitor at the 2003 Pan American Games. She said, or he said, I'm not sure.
Starting point is 02:05:58 I saw Marcelo Rios play at the Pan American Games, which they were held in the Dominican Republic and in Santo Domingo in 2003, all the people were happy to see Rios play and wanted to support him. But his attitude was very bad, and he was rude to many people during the tournament. And by the time of the final match against the Brazilian Federer Fernando Melogini, all the fans were cheering for Mellon Genie and against Rios. He's Jesus Christ, man. That's funny. Lou Nortiz, who's a tennis fan. He says, quote, Marcelo Rios is the biggest jerk in the whole sport.
Starting point is 02:06:37 That's awesome. In one incident with me in Miami, we were walking from the lounge down the stairway in March 2003. He intentionally bumped me. And the reason, in my estimation, was because I supported the opposition in a recent match in Indian Wells. I did report this to Gail Bradshaw, who was the supervisor at the time. Marcelo Rios is an absolutely ridiculous person. So, yeah. 2003 is where the La Serena, some restaurant he was in, he was in the bathroom and apparently it's a hotel.
Starting point is 02:07:12 Apparently he knocked a man down and urinated on him in the restroom. Why would you? I don't know what this guy said to him or did to him, but he knocked him down on the ground physically and then took his cock out and peed on him. There was a reference to Indian blood somewhere. Maybe he asked him about Indian blood and mothers being whores. I don't know what happened, but my goodness, he peed on a guy. That didn't get him thrown out, by the way. Really?
Starting point is 02:07:38 No, no, no. Didn't get him thrown out. But then again, later on, he was found swimming nude in the pool, and they threw him out of the hotel. That'll do it. You can't Clark Griswold the situation. They will throw you out for that. Cock out for one guy, you can stick around. Cock out for everybody, you can get the fuck out of here.
Starting point is 02:07:55 At least in the bathroom, they were like, he was in the right room to have his cock out and to have piss flowing from it. He just did it four feet from the correct location. That's the only difference. And on a person. Okay, fine. We'll give you that. So here's somebody who knew him well. They said, why do you think Rios was the way he was?
Starting point is 02:08:16 This guy said, probably shy. Very shy. He's real shy with his cock out. Super shy. He's swimming naked and pissing on people. That's not shy. No. The opposite of shy. He's swimming naked and pissing on people. That's not shy. No. The opposite of shy.
Starting point is 02:08:32 Probably the example of his father because he's a very serious person. The father is hard to take a conversation with him. I remember the time when he had the relation with the directors with the Chilean Federation. Once the people told me it was difficult relations with Mr. Rios. He was very difficult very serious and probably marcello got get the same personality that the father has some people said that when the father began to work when he was young he was in the middle class socioeconomic and when he have a lot of money he changed some people said that but i'm not. But it could be one factor. So, who knows? Money changes people.
Starting point is 02:09:07 It usually does. September 27, 2003, he is in a bar in Santiago, so home country. He's in a bar, and he gets in an argument with the staff. Okay. Okay, and gets in some physical altercations with them and all sorts of shit like that and then the cops come and it gets real interesting so here's a witness quote well i saw him fighting inside with the staff later i even saw him take a radio from the city security and then get into a fist fight with the police that's that's his evening um they asked the witness was he inebriated
Starting point is 02:09:47 and he says oh yes both he and his friend both of them yeah to fight the staff of a bar get thrown out and then not go oof jesus we should probably take you know take it down a notch right then to fist fight the police after you took a radio from a city security officer yeah i feel like yeah you're probably hammered for that one or or definitely the biggest prick ever one of the two certainly biggest prick i ever met he was taken away he's arrested and uh he's actually arrested in his hometown so that's tough to do he's so mad about being arrested in his own hometown for fist fighting police mind you for his own behavior he went to court and after court he said that he wants to leave chile forever he's tired of his home country because of what they're doing ma'am
Starting point is 02:10:36 he said quote i'm leaving i can't be a normal person here i've thought about it a thousand times i can't go to a restaurant or do anything young people do i don't have a normal person here i've thought about it a thousand times i can't go to a restaurant or do anything young people do i don't have a private life here if you knock down here if you can knock down your idols you do it yeah but are the police your idols he's the one of the idols is what they're saying i get they're knocking him down only for that i get it yeah he's knocking down police you gotta go man does he think it's not like that somewhere else by the way right in the I get it. They're knocking him down only for that. I get it. Yeah. He's knocking down police. You got to go, man. Does he think it's not like that somewhere else, by the way?
Starting point is 02:11:09 Right. In the States. You think he can just swing on cops everywhere? Yeah. In the States, the bigger you are, oh boy, the bigger they can't wait to, you know. Yeah. It's a harder fall, man. So anyway, he's very confused.
Starting point is 02:11:21 He doesn't know what to do with himself. He doesn't want to leave his country. His whole country is turned against him damn it i mean the people the the press you name it everybody's against him except for one person that truly understands him who he runs into down there in an airport at a church's chicken he's very this person or popeyes and this person can understand him. Of course it's Adam Popeye the arugula connoisseur Jones and he
Starting point is 02:11:50 Pac-Man and Popeye. Sorry. I said Popeye. I meant Pac-Man but he had Popeyes so I called him Popeye. If there was a Pac-Man's chicken he would have had that hopefully. Popeye Jones. There is a Popeye Jones a basketball player. If there was a Pac-Man's chicken, he would have had that, hopefully. There is a Popeye Jones, a basketball player.
Starting point is 02:12:10 Fuck me all up. And he says, there's no music, so here he goes. He said, how is it you've come to arrive here? You should be lifted up on a pedestal. Every day should be a coronation, a drive to the palace to be told how wonderful you are. This is ridiculous. These people are misunderstanding you. That's the problem. You're like, oh, everybody's got a lot of time and I'm not going to waste it. That's the thing. So I'm going to answer my questions very concise, very, very, very even, very concise, very nice. I'm sure the police, they come to you and you're like oh
Starting point is 02:12:46 hello officer and then you know you find out you think it's like a fake police officer so you begin to beat them unmercifully in the street obviously sometimes you gotta fight back i would say sir that you are you're doing fine you keep up the good work and uh I salute you, and I will see you soon. Poof. And in a poof of warrants and Popeye's boxes, he is an arugula. He disappears, and Marcelo Rios, very confused about this. He has no idea what's going on. Never heard of Popeye's chicken. He has no idea about any of it, and he's very confused. So he plays in some tournaments this year in 2003 he uh he
Starting point is 02:13:27 loses uh in his home country and uh he's on the world cup team where he won with a partner i think it was a uh i think he was doing a doubles thing for them he also won silver medals in singles and doubles with Adrian Garcia in the 2003 Pan American Games. He did that. 2003, he played very few tournaments, though, and most of which he had to withdraw for injury or whatever reason. He finishes the year ranked number
Starting point is 02:13:57 105 in the world. Oh, it's slipping hard. It's slipping bad here. March 2004. This is when his private life that he says that he hates being public really gets public. So a magazine publishes some photos of him, as they put it, quote, dancing seductively with another woman at a disco in Paris. He's grinding on some broad in Paris, right? Yeah. So his wife publicly fucking breaks
Starting point is 02:14:27 up with him hello hard coffee i want to announce in a divorce literally and then so during that year's davis cup press conference for you know tennis he fucking instead of asking questions takes out a letter to his wife and tearfully reads it asking for forgiveness somebody get this to my wife crying ends up leaving the stage in tears what the fuck is happening that's the tennis uh equivalent of message in a bottle i guess so hopefully she'll hear this so they split up she says no thank you press conference or not they march 2004 they finally get a or they get a divorce but it legally doesn't take place in their home country they have to go to costa rica to do it because chile chill no chile doesn't allow married couples the right of divorce until November 2004.
Starting point is 02:15:26 Is that right? Yeah, but they weren't allowed to get divorced until November 2004. Oh, boy. And then they'd have to go to other countries to do it if they could afford it. Otherwise, they'd just stay married, I guess. Yeah. So July 16, 2004, he retires. Uh-huh. Retires already.
Starting point is 02:15:42 Not even 27. I'm sorry, not even 29, retired. He says he's 28 years old, announces his retirement. He says, quote, the truth is that I wanted to continue to play and win a tournament for my daughter to see, but that will be a problem because he has a back injury. He has 31 in his singles.
Starting point is 02:16:01 He has 18 titles, 13 runner-ups. He's 0-1 in a Grand Slam, one or one and oh in a grand slam cup so he did okay he finished his uh 2004 number 842 in the world not good here's here's his progression starting in 94 and it'll be every year. 107, 25, 11, 10, 2, 9, 37, 39, 24, 105, 842. Oh, no. So, not great. He does organize a farewell tour in his home country. Traveling through several cities. Meeting with fans.
Starting point is 02:16:41 Doing tennis clinics. And playing matches like exhibitions with international players such as Peter Korda. Remember him? He lost the Australian Open. Still mad at him later, but him and Gorvan Ivanovic. It ends in December 2004
Starting point is 02:16:57 where he plays his final tennis match of his career. There, anyway. What he says is there. And gets a job as a commentator for a chilean radio station okay so in 2005 he marries a model named maria eugenia lorraine yeah uh she is well you're gonna this that name should sound familiar by the way do you remember remember that model he was going out with from 95 to 98 there? What was her last name?
Starting point is 02:17:28 Was it Lorraine? It was Lorraine. Oh, no. Not only is Maria Eugenia Lorraine the former fiance of a professional football player down there, soccer player named Yvonne Zamorano, but, oh, my God, she's also the cousin of Patricia Lorraine, who he went out with from 95 to 99 wow so this is a complete fucking disaster this wedding this does not last long he would later call this marriage quote the biggest mistake of my life um it lasts five months five months um it's a mistake but he made it as we talk about here
Starting point is 02:18:10 you're gonna really not like this guy after this he's accused by her of throwing her out of his moving car why while he was visiting his daughter in costa rica she arrived at santiago's airport later on coming back from costa rica in a wheelchair with bruises all over her legs he told the press those bruises were caused by falling down while she was skiing water skiing yeah costa rica what is he talking about sure there's mountains down there with some snow. The Andes are down there. But I'm not sure about the skiing, but she said he threw her out of a fucking moving car. I believe that one. That's a problem there.
Starting point is 02:18:53 And then the marriage is over. Yeah. Yeah. She divorces him. I wouldn't be married to a clumsy bitch either, James. Yeah. You clumsy bitch. Marrying you.
Starting point is 02:19:03 So 2006, he debuts on the ATP Champions Tour. It's a tour for former players. And the requirements are you have to be at least two years retired. But he's way younger than most of the other guys. Yeah. He's fucking like 30. So they're all, you know, 42, 45. Some of them are even older than that.
Starting point is 02:19:23 So he wins six tournaments in a row because he's playing old men. Yeah, because they're still spry. He's still spry. He ends the year at number one, winning six tournaments and holding a winning streak of 25 matches. He found his groove. Yeah, playing against old men.
Starting point is 02:19:40 He's a jerk to people. As long as they're 10-15 years older than me, I can take them. and all the other players are pissed because he's so young they're like this isn't fair like and sign up to play against this guy you should still be playing tired yeah if his back feels good he'd be playing in the regular shit this is it for him. Quote, he tells a magazine quote. I am sure that after so long, I found the person that fills me.
Starting point is 02:20:12 Yeah, he's ready to 2008. His second daughter is born with this woman. First with this woman, Isadora is her name. And they get married in May of 2009. A few months after the daughter is born. He goes back on the Veterans Tour in 2008. He's beat by Pete Sampras in the final of a seniors tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Ends the year at number three in the Veterans World rankings here.
Starting point is 02:20:38 Now, on June 24th, he beat Sampras in an exhibition match that commemorated the 10-year anniversary of him having reached number one ranking in the world. That feels like Pete did that on purpose for him. Yeah, right? Yeah, yeah. That's like a wrestling show where the hometown guy's got to win. No, no. He's got to win.
Starting point is 02:20:56 10-year anniversary of him being number one? Clearly, I'm going down. Yeah, they're going to throw shit at you otherwise. So 2009, maybe he's calmed down. Maybe. Nick Boletieri here says, quote, he was divorced and he's married now. He's very, very, very polite. Three verys in that.
Starting point is 02:21:17 He's very, very, very polite. Extremely, extremely polite, which makes me think he's not polite at all. If you say very, very, very, extremely, extremely, I think lie lie lie lie lie the more i'm an italian guy yeah the more varies and extremities you use the more i think you're lying and the more i think you have to make the lie bigger if you hear that kind of blustery language of superlatives always lies they're always lies that's how con artists lie to you the multiple word is every one of them is a wing. Yeah. Very, very, very, very, very.
Starting point is 02:21:50 It's not a good business. It's the best business. You know what I mean? This multilevel marketing isn't the good leggings. They're the best leggings with the best designs. So he's extremely, extremely polite. He came here to watch his daughter in 2009. By the way, his daughter Costanza is excellent.
Starting point is 02:22:11 Excellent. No, she's better than excellent. So maybe she's terrible, too. I don't know. Why are we selling her? I don't know. She moves well. Good ground strokes.
Starting point is 02:22:20 Great foundation. She can volley. The broad can fucking volley, Jimmy. I'm telling you right now she could do a lot of things she could be a very good player i'm just telling you and marcello is very happy to see that and he was very appreciative saying thank you he was warm and i said to myself i think having the children he has now helped him change maybe but uh did he fulfill his career no no sir he didn't he was one out of a million what he had
Starting point is 02:22:46 you can't teach it okay you can't teach it uh 2010 his daughter columba is born so there we go now december 2011 he and his wife have they give she gives birth again this time to Triplets. Oh, boy. Triplets. He has two daughters, Antonella and Augustina, making four or five daughters total now. Right. And a son, finally. Jimmy.
Starting point is 02:23:17 Obviously. What do you think he names it? Marcello Jr., baby. It's 100% named Marcello fucking Jr. He's been swinging for this the whole time the whole time here uh so 2015 it is announced that the chile tennis federation and rios were to request a probe by the international tennis federation into his 1998 australian open final opponent peter corda's possible doping activity during the tournament fucking 17 years ago why do we have 17 year old samples what are we talking about they might save them but who cares it's 2015 who gives a shit at this point? This is when you bring this up? Right.
Starting point is 02:24:05 Now? What the fuck? Find out who killed Biggie and Tupac. Yeah, do that. Forget Peter Korda. Who gives a shit? Who cares, man? Put your resources into something that matters. Jesus.
Starting point is 02:24:19 Then May 2014, he says in an interview that he thinks he has Asperger's syndrome. And he thinks he's got that, and he's going to the doctor. He went to one doctor, and he's got to get it confirmed. Then in 2016, he confirms in an interview with Chili Vision. Chili Vision, that sounds delicious. Sounds wonderful. Sponsored by Hormel. It sounds so good.
Starting point is 02:24:44 With a piece of bread in it and you dip it oh man cornbread big french bread no you can't dip cornbread it falls apart oh no if you get the good one jame it stays together oh god cornbread's not supposed to stay together oh i love cornbread cornbread's delicious but you can't dip it in things is all i'm saying you want to scoop chili and some like french bread with a crust on it. I don't know. Italian bread. When the shit falls apart, then you got some in the chili. It's so good. No.
Starting point is 02:25:10 If there's a choice between a crusted French or Italian bread and anything else, I'm going with that always, even though I love cornbread. Don't get me wrong. I'm running with the cornbread, James. I want a cornbread on the side, but dipping-wise, I'm not dipping in there. I'm running with the cornbread. It's such a fucking frustrating experience. You dip it dipping-wise, I'm not dipping in there. I'm running with the cornbread. It's such a fucking frustrating experience.
Starting point is 02:25:28 You dip it. It'd be just what's in your hand. The rest is falling in there. You're trying to scoop it out. Now, you might as well just put cornbread in the chili and then dip bread in it, which is a good idea, actually. That could be delicious. I'm not saying it's wrong. You've got too many logical thoughts about food.
Starting point is 02:25:45 It's a lot of logic. Yeah, there's a lot of logic there. Food with you is so logical. It's like every step has to be explained. Well, yeah. There's reasons for making things. There's reasons I do this. And me, I'm just like, push it in my face.
Starting point is 02:25:59 Maybe that's why I shit liquid and you're fine. That might be it. Yeah. You're eating illogical foods, Jimmy. That's the problem. You're're eating illogical foods jimmy that's the problem you're just eating illogical food yeah it's like i don't know it's fun for me and then afterwards it's not fun anymore oh my god okay sorry so no shit no he's got chili vision oh yeah that's where we are chili vision uh he says that he is as he does have asperger's he said he's been diagnosed twice in his life once as a child and then once during
Starting point is 02:26:29 davis cup incident that happened here but he said he didn't really care about it that much until 2014 and he started to realize what you know what it was and then he could you know take do things and maybe whatever he could do things to to notice his behavior and stuff like that. So 2017, he is in a car accident. Oh, no. A bad one, too. He crashes his McLaren 570S coupe. He has done great for himself.
Starting point is 02:26:58 He really has. Wait till you hear about his house that he sells here. It's worth 170,000 euros. Yeah. that he sells here um he it's worth 170 000 euros crashed it in a motorway near santiago chile and uh another car was there too he's uh both the people are medically okay after a while here um so yeah it's just it's released that none of them are drunk the police say they weren't drunk it's not an alcohol related release but hauling ass yeah they said there might have been some oil on the street or something that made him
Starting point is 02:27:25 lose control. I'm sure he wasn't going the correct speed. Right. That's the other thing. I mean, let's be honest. He's driving a McLaren, James. You can't drive that at the speed limit. No, he drove a goddamn rental car.
Starting point is 02:27:36 It was probably a Hyundai Sonata. He drove that and almost hit a cop with it. What do you think? He's driving a fucking McLaren. You can't exactly feel bad for him, is what I'm getting at. You know what I mean? But there are some people that you can feel very bad for jimmy yeah not nearly as bad as i feel for marcelo rios customer service specialist at booking.com in orlando florida
Starting point is 02:27:57 marcelo rios would be the worst customer service representative ever ever will this happen to my thing i don't care i don't give a shit okay um thank you for calling avis i'm the worst prick you ever met you ever met huh yeah fuck you i don't care so marcello rios uh area manager at DeMio Cleaning Services in New South Wales, Australia. So it's spreading to continents, Jimmy. Marcelo Rios, IT administrator at Clinica Pergamino in Argentina. And finally, Marcelo Rios, mission support specialist at the Homeland Security Department in Wichita, Kansas. So good variety there.
Starting point is 02:28:47 So 2018, he has a successful elbow surgery and he announces a comeback as part of his desire to be the oldest ever winner of a challenger tournament. And that didn't ever happen. But he did play in an exhibition and defeated some guy in Chile that year in December of 2018. So Elbow's feeling good anyway. Tennis Elbow. Mm-hmm. Also, 2018, he insults a group of journalists, so he has not changed at all.
Starting point is 02:29:18 He says they are asking him questions, and he says, quote, as a personal friend, Diego Maradona, who will definitely be an episode on him. That's not good. No, no. As my personal friend Diego Maradona says, I don't speak to reporters. You all suck at it. And then a reporter tried to ask him another question, and he said, you can all keep sucking. And he left. Keep sucking.
Starting point is 02:29:49 Keep sucking. said you can all keep sucking and he left keep sucking keep sucking um so they find him 2500 the international tennis federation uh he says quote i understand that many people disagree with what i said uh but it bothers me that journalists lie so much and no one stops them i came to chile to help the team without getting paid i'm here to help the team in the training sessions because i want i want to and coming to chile and getting involved in personal conversations why journalists like to make victims they like being the same or they were just asking you some questions about tennis and if you just answered them they would have wrote some innocuous shit about tennis it would have been on page 42 and no one fucking cares and then it goes away you're making a spectacle of yourself if you're involved in professional tennis people are going to ask you about professional tennis that's how you get people in the stands and people to fucking tv
Starting point is 02:30:34 contracts by talking about it idiot so he uh 2020 he moves to sarasota florida really done with it down here going Going to Florida. He, yeah, he says that once he moves to Florida, by the way, he's got some stuff. He says that he, the current deputy and former television presenter, I don't know what she's deputy of. Sounds like something in the government. Government, but and former television presenter, Pamela, Pamela Giles. He says that she tried to rape him when he was younger. Oh, my God. Yes.
Starting point is 02:31:08 He says, quote, she used to do interviews, right? I was a boy. I was 14 years old and she came to my house. She sat me on the bed and did an interview for a channel. She said, the last stage we are going to do is in the shower. You're going to take off your clothes and we'll do it in the shower. So that's what he said that she said, like, we'll do is in the shower. You're going to take off your clothes and we'll do it in the shower. So that's what he said that she said, like, we'll shoot you in the shower.
Starting point is 02:31:30 He said, I swear it was at my house and my parents were there. My mother told her, lady, that's enough, and they threw her out. I swear on my children that's how it was. She tried to put me in the shower naked and continue the interview there. She tried to rape me.
Starting point is 02:31:51 It's a big leap from one to the other that's a lot certainly it's certainly child it's weird to put a kid in the shower it's molesty it's certainly not okay i don't know about rape but it's well there's just a step to that yeah you know there's just there's a there's a moat between yeah that and rape It's terrible either way. An adult shouldn't want a teenage child to strip for them ever. But rape is also rape. So it's a lot. Pamela, what happened? Well, days later, Pamela here, she says that she will file a lawsuit against him and deny his allegations.
Starting point is 02:32:21 And so an hour later, he said, quote, pamela giles never tried to rape me you can't say that shit man no he said quote it is true that she interviewed you know what let's let's do it in their own words here i feel like we need that's it's late in the show but let's do it in their own words it's necessary quote in their own words quote it is true that she interviewed me when i was very young in the tub she tells me my mom was a witness and she tells her hey what i am what i'm doing and i don't know if she'll kick uh kick her out or walk away he said i withdrew the rape which sounded strong i shouldn't have said it. The rape was strong. He said the rape was strong. Yeah, that's a strong word. It's a big one. So he also added the announcement that, you know, he said, yeah, she wants to take me to court. court and sue me perfect but then i will be busy later in march it's not that pamela giles is bad but i don't know her at all and i have nothing against her two minutes later she tried to two
Starting point is 02:33:30 minutes ago she tried to rape you now you have nothing against her 20 she asked me to do an interview in the shower she was gonna rape and murder me obviously buried in a shed somewhere i was gonna be decapitated she's gonna cut my fingers, take out all my teeth so I couldn't be identified. I know how these things work. 2021, just a couple months ago, he finally sells a house that he's been trying to sell for five years. Wow. Finally. Five fucking years on the market. It's located in the hidden valley of low Barranquilla.
Starting point is 02:33:59 And he left it in 2016 when he moved to Sarasota. So this house here is 1,250 square meters. And he left it in 2016 when he moved to Sarasota. So this house here is 1,250 square meters. It's about 4,000-ish in that ballpark square feet. That's a lot. That's a lot. It's a big house. Seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms.
Starting point is 02:34:19 Oh, my. Movie theater, jacuzzi, sauna. It's pretty goddamn nice. Also, parking for 10 cars. I don't know if that's a 10-car garage or just a big driveway. Roof terrace, game room, high-performance gym, and heated pool. He said it's an incredible view. Space is for the whole family. It's in a sector that's safer than the Ridge and has everything you can imagine.
Starting point is 02:34:42 It was on the market for over four years. The property was originally offered for $200,000 U.F. ridge and has everything you can imagine it was on the market for over four years uh the property was originally offered for 200 000 uf i don't know what the fuck uf is because i don't even know what this country is so thanks no i doubt it no and during the 2019 the price was lowered to 150 000 at the beginning of 2020 the sale price was lowered again to remain at 100,000. So it's half of what it was before that. And then finally, they sold it for 96,000, which is more than, Jesus Christ, 2,750 million pesos. Okay, I don't understand. Okay, either way.
Starting point is 02:35:19 So there's that. This is some bad translation that's pretty goddamn funny i gotta say this is from an article i'm gonna read it just straight straight from the article because the article translated one thing into another so i don't know what the original like original language thing was to for even to get a correct translation i just have this and it's amazing it says the property broker soledad vidal who went out of business to sell a iconic home of Marcelo Rios in the capital. He recounted some details of the business and said that the new owners were shocked to learn the house belonged to one of the former number one in world tennis. For them, it was a good thing.
Starting point is 02:35:57 They were like cunts. They were informed. I don't think that's what the translation is. They were like cunts. They were informed. It does not seem probably right, but that's what it says in this exact translation. Quote, I went like four or five times to show it, which is quite a lot for this type of house, but they've declined because it was too big. They told me they had plenty of space or there were finishes that had to be changed and that they'd better be better building one for that. And yeah, he also says that
Starting point is 02:36:31 Rios and his wife were, quote, super calm, happy and very grateful to the office. They are both spectacular. And Marcello, a gentleman, despite all that has been said, super smart. I think I think he is super demanding of himself, so he appreciates when there's efficient, fast, clear, and professional management. The sale is important because of the publicity and because Marcelo has very good vibes with that unexpected gratitude. What a mess. They're cunts, so they're happy.
Starting point is 02:37:01 They're informed. That's the craziest thing. Can't get enough of this prick? He is the biggest prick. He's a prick. Yes, he is. That guy was right. He is.
Starting point is 02:37:10 There's a ton of shit. There's autograph stuff. Who knows if it's real after our bonus episode, as you know, from Patreon. But there's stuff out there. You can get a poster. He was big shit for a couple years there and had the whole rebel thing going. So there was a little popular movement around him of like yeah he's the fuck you guy so yeah and that just made me think i watched a lot
Starting point is 02:37:31 between 96 and 98 i watched a lot of tennis yeah yeah never heard of this fucking guy yeah i don't yeah and he he got very famous too with the because he had like the long slick back hair yeah and um they would say some racist shit too they'd be like he looks like he looks like a drug dealer but he's a great tennis player and shit like that one of the guys said if you had to uh if you needed like a south american drug dealer slash terrorist from central casting this is the guy they'd send to you and it's like what the fuck kind of thing is that to say in a newspaper jesus christ man so anyway that is marcelo rios and uh like i said couple arrests should have been a couple more but mainly just the story of an asshole right that's the best way to put it
Starting point is 02:38:13 there probably is way worse things that he did that he never got caught for oh i'm sure i'm sure it has to be because he that tennis is international shit they pushed that all under the rug so sweepy sweepy sweepy there we go if you like that show tell the world about it get on please do whatever app you're listening to whatever platform give us five stars say something nice because god damn it it helps out so please do that uh you can follow us on social media at crime and sports on twitter and facebook at small town murder on instagram head over to shut up and Murder on Instagram.
