Crime in Sports - #299 - Too Much Hype, Too Many Guns - The Marketedness of Sebastian Telfair

Episode Date: April 19, 2022

This week, we check out a guy, who was already signing autographs, while in the 6th grade. A prodigy, and phenom, on the level of Lebron James, but he could never quite live up to the hype. I...nstead, he screwed up. A lot. He seems to have particular liking of guns, specifically carrying them, in places that he shouldn't, such as planes, or New York City. He beefed with rappers, hung out with celebrities, and always ended up in trouble. He even took part in a huge financial scheme with 18 other NBA players! He's got it all!! Be the best basketball prospect, in the country, when you're 11, be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, while you're still in high school, and wind up in prison, by the time you're 35 with Sebastian Telfair!! Check us out, every Tuesday! We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!!  Hosted by James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman  Donate at... patreon.com/crimeinsports or with paypal.com using our email: crimeinsports@gmail.com  Get all the CIS & STM merch at crimeinsports.threadless.com  Go to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things CIS & STM!!  Contact us on... twitter.com/crimeinsports crimeinsports@gmail.com facebook.com/Crimeinsports instagram.com/smalltownmurderSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For crime and sports, we have The Secret Life of Tiger Woods, and this was, while he was the squeaky cleaniest guy there was,
Starting point is 00:04:08 he was also doing all sorts of debaucherous dirty shit with Perkins managers. It's hilarious. We talked all about it. And it took a car crash for him to spread his legs for us. Yeah, it was it. And then it all came out. It all fell out of his spread legs. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Secret Life of Tiger Woods woods what he was up to and then for small town murder we have everybody's favorite the prisoner dating game yeah all violent felon edition jimmy picked it's hilarious who he picked you got to hear this episode it's it's crazy he's there's no good choices jimmy picked the worst of the worst though always and i love it so, so much. Eight ringers, and somehow I found the hardest ringers. The hardest rings you could find. Patreon.com slash Crime and Sports is where you get all of that, and you'll also get a shout-out at the end of the show, of course. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:57 And so they're coming, and enjoy that. Patreon.com slash Crime and Sports. Let's get into this, Jimmy. Okay. Let's do it. we have a lot of craziness for you today we are going to talk about sebastian telfer remember him i know the name you know him nba hockey player nba hockey player yes he's a six foot tall black dude from coney island who was a hockey phenom um it was really strange there There wasn't a lot of rinks around, but he made it work somehow.
Starting point is 00:05:28 We'll get into it. I'm trying it in my head. He was on the Suns. That's why. Oh, okay. He was on the Suns. He was on a bunch of teams. For a minute, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:36 But there was a documentary about him. There was a lot about him coming out. There was a lot of hype. Well, he came right from high school the year after lebron james and it was they were one and one a of these new high school phenoms it was him and lebron were the the main thing so we'll get into it sebastian telfair nickname of bassy i don't know if it's bassy or bassy but it's b-a-s-s-y i guess bassy i don't know but sebastian well bastion bass bassy there you go don't like it's B-A-S-S-Y. I guess Basie. I don't know. But Sebastian.
Starting point is 00:06:05 I don't like it at all. Well, Bastion. Bass. Basie. There you go. Don't like it. It's Basie. So Basie.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Somebody from New York, all I can hear is a crackhead screaming Sebastian. Well, that's, I was going to say. Forever in my life goes. I was going to say, it's going to be so hard throughout the course of this episode to not go, Sebastian! Sebastian! be so hard throughout the course of this episode to not go sebastian sebastian because if you've ever seen dope sick love that is those two are obviously the stars of the show all that and the guy sweat is all sweat is all sweat is all i went to i went to a paint store and the guy helping me was named sebastian and as i ordered the paint as i ordered the paint i go you ever
Starting point is 00:06:45 seen dope sick and he goes what and i was like watch it and you'll see what i mean we have to do a bonus episode on that life of crime one too that we've been watching it is un-fucking-real it's like did you watch the yeah i will we'll talk it's like dope sick love if you got the beginning and end of the story too too. Not just that middle part. It's too much. It's the whole. It's crazy. So anyway.
Starting point is 00:07:07 I think I like dope sick love better because I'd rather imagine what happened. No, dope sick love, too, is just such a slice of life. There's no music. It's just like you're just watching it like there's a camera on the street. You're just like, whoa, this is crazy. And then having zero self-awareness or in the moment-moment realization of what the fuck they're saying. Yeah. And that's what makes it so fun and riveting because you're like, you don't realize you just said that?
Starting point is 00:07:33 Nope. Sounds right in the haze that they're in. But a year in the life, they seem to know what they're doing. Yeah. And it's too much. It's a lot because you see it for 30 years. You watch people fall apart for 30 years you watch people fall apart for 30 years so we'll go to sebastian speaking of falling apart for 30 years
Starting point is 00:07:50 sebastian uh born june 9th 1985 here so you know young guy obviously um brooklyn he's from he's from coney island that is where he grows up um he is the son of Erica Telfair and Otis Telfair. Look at that. His dad was a Vietnam veteran Marine. Holy shit. Yeah, his dad's going to be, that sounds pretty tough. And an older guy to be born in 85. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:08:20 His dad has been through it and has dealt with being through it for quite some time, and then Sebastian shows up. That's definitely an older guy, yeah, because I was born a few years before him, and my dad was too young for Vietnam. So that's got to be an older guy here. They lived in the Surfside Gardens Projects in Brooklyn and Coney Island. And in the projects. In the projects, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Coney Island is, you think of Coney Island, you think of, oh, they have like the roller coaster. Big hot dogs. Nathan's and all that. They also have very dangerous neighborhoods right around that. Coney Island is known for being not a great place to walk around. Hot dogs, Ferris wheels, and fucking murder. And you'll get stabbed also, so watch out. Stay in the main area of the theme park if park if you're gonna do anything stay in hot dog
Starting point is 00:09:06 smelling distance otherwise get the fuck out of town he is uh he's stefan marbury's cousin is that right so yeah that comes up constantly there stefan touts him and then they have beef with each other and then they're buddies again it's pretty fucking funny and his brother is a kid named jamal thomas not a kid he's a grown. But at the time of reading this, he was a kid. It was a guy named Jamal Thomas. I'm sorry. And Jamal played for the Celtics, Nets, and Warriors in the NBA for three years as well. So, yeah, a lot of family talent here when it comes to basketball.
Starting point is 00:09:41 So, now, Sebastian, Marbury, when he was in high school, as we remember from the Stefan Marbury episode, he was like top tier high school guy right away. I mean, he was big. And Telfair was the same thing. I mean, the Hoop Scoop Recruiting Service had him as the top player in the nation in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Wow. First of all, there's adults monitoring how sixth graders play basketball disturbs me that's weird yeah that
Starting point is 00:10:12 if you're you should just look at that and go wow this is not even close to as entertaining as adults i'm getting out of here and i'm gonna go watch an nba game fuck am i doing with my life these are children and then you will go away right yeah like this is somebody's handing out business gambling and at that point you should certainly think uh what's wrong with me as well i'm gambling on children i'm like frank from always sunny i'm frank reynolds now this isn't good the next is goldfish for fucking racing yeah no shit they can they can win gamblers will do that though gamblers are gambling on anything The next is goldfish for fucking racing. Yeah, no shit. They can win.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Gamblers will do that, though. Gamblers will gamble on anything. There could be no sports and gamblers would gamble on anything. What time is the rainfall going to start? They'll gamble on it. Drop your phone. I bet it cracks. That's the thing.
Starting point is 00:11:01 They will, too. They'll gamble on it. So sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Imagine having, like, you're anything the top in the nation when you're 12, when you're 11 in the sixth grade. That's crazy. I can't. How anonymous were you in the sixth grade in terms of the national zeitgeist? I've mentioned it. Forget national level.
Starting point is 00:11:20 My teacher didn't even remember. Yeah, that's what I mean. I had nothing going for me in the sixth grade how how insignificant was i somebody i saw every single day for a year didn't even recognize not at all i was decent at little league i mean but nobody was writing about it or anything not even anybody in our little league never never mind nationally. I was, you know, no one cared. Wasn't that good? You know, like, who cares?
Starting point is 00:11:49 This is wild. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. In 2000, after his eighth grade year, he became the youngest player invited to compete at the Adidas ABCD high school camp. Awesome. So these are the kids who are, like, 17 years old, juniors, like the kids who are like 17 years old juniors like the kids who are the top recruit top guys of the nation that every college is recruiting and here's him in eighth grade 13 he's gonna come up and play with these kids too and we'll talk about that because sonny vaccaro talks about him because they didn't want to let him play some guy got hurt or something and couldn't play and they were looking at him he had showed up and they were gonna let him do
Starting point is 00:12:22 practices and stuff and they looked at him and they're like should we give him a shot and they're like yeah fuck it let him run see what he can do unreal and he was goddamn good um so anyway uh marbury at this point because he's famous now during the time that stuff that sebastian's coming up he would mention him all the time in interviews like oh my little cousin's the shit you better wait till you see him and all that sort of shit here um until fair's brother jamel played at providence and then went and played a couple years in the nba and then he was kind of he was playing overseas a little bit and he was also being like sebastian's personal basketball trainer type of thing sick like helping him a lot um you know doing all that sort of shit so he was uh they had a uh um he was very much into like he would play uh playground ball and and uh school ball that's
Starting point is 00:13:13 what i'm trying to say here so he's known on the street as the baddest motherfucker there he's known you know and and at the prep school level as the baddest motherfucker there too so he's just nasty he's only 5 11 6, too. He's just nasty. He's only 5'11", 6 feet, too. He's listed at 6 feet, but everybody says he's 5'11". He just... 6 feet sounds better. 6'1", maybe? Yeah, not that big
Starting point is 00:13:35 of a guy, but he's a point guard. That's all right. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School. That's where he went and it's a big high school program in new york and he became immediately a huge high school sensation as well he was signing autographs in the seventh grade literally like he used to he used to practice it and you know had a signature down so it looked cool and all sorts of shit like that so there's a book about
Starting point is 00:14:03 him called the jump it's called sebastian telfer and the high stakes business of high school ball by ian o'connor and then the the documentary i'm talking about that was like 2007 ish it was uh maybe earlier 2003 4 it was really good though it was called through the fire um by jonathan hawk who was the director of that that showed his his final year of high school, what he was going to do. Was he going to enter the NBA draft, or where is he going to go to college, and kind of that whole thing.
Starting point is 00:14:34 So it's like Hoop Dreams, but narrowed to one person over one year. Have you ever seen Hoop Dreams? It's the guy that did Stevie, correct? It's Steve James, yeah, Stevie. Right, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's the thing that made him big and made him be able to go do Stevie and shit like that. I imagine I've seen it.
Starting point is 00:14:49 It's like four and a half hours long. And it's from like 94, 93? Yeah, something like that because it follows the – it might be 95, but it follows the kids in the late 80s here. These two kids through high school, these two big prospects. It's interesting as fuck, man. It's really good if you haven't seen it. Who were they? Did they make it to the NBA?
Starting point is 00:15:10 No, no. Oh. No. No, no. I think one of them played in Europe and the other one went to college and got hurt. And that's what they're showing. Even the top guys who are whatever,
Starting point is 00:15:19 most of the time it doesn't work out. Right. You're seeing whoever you see in the NBA is the guys who came out of the funnel end. A lot of guys went into the top and only a few were dropping out of the bottom of that funnel. Everybody else is just in there. There's a filter in there. Yeah, it's like that with every sport. It's like that with every goddamn sport.
Starting point is 00:15:38 So the Dallas Morning News ran a feature on him when he was in seventh grade. Jesus Christ. Ever since then he's had national prominence because there was this thing though then that because there was no uh following of jordan until later you know what i mean yeah there was this like media frenzy to find the one that's gonna be the next whatever the fuck and fuck. And they wanted the documentary and the documentation of how great and the rise of this guy. But every one of them kept failing and kept failing. And then now you got LeBron, which, I mean, he did great. He's the only guy.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I'd give anything to be that guy. He's the only guy. Tiger Woods did it for until we talked we talked about up until our bonus episode he did it but otherwise lebron's the only guy who's under a microscope from that and in team sports and individual sports it's a different thing because these tennis players hockey players they're you know 14 years old the spotlight's on them but i'm talking i have gymnasts things like that these team games that are a lot of money and a lot of pressure, let's be honest here.
Starting point is 00:16:47 The NBA has a lot of pressure with all the money and all that sort of shit. So LeBron's the only guy who, and people don't like LeBron for whatever reason. That's fine. You don't have to fucking like him. I'm just saying he's the only guy who never gets arrested. He never fucking does it. All he does is score 30 a game all the time.
Starting point is 00:17:02 That's it. Yeah. That's all. He's a great player. Granted, I don't like the way he scores. I don't like his game. He's kind of a boring guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:11 It's not exciting. Well, because also, it's not exciting because look at what kind of a physical. He's six foot fucking eight, 260 pounds of muscle. He's a train. With a ridiculous wingspan. He's a train. He makes it look easy almost because he's so goddamn amazing. Like, if Jordan had LeBron's physicality.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Oh, Christ. He would have scored 50 points a game. Every night. He would have been fucking, he would have been hurting people, too, because he was mean as shit. He's mean, too, and he would have been hurting people. And physicality was encouraged, then, in terms of literally running people over. He did it all the time. Yeah, and LeBron's like Anthony Mason with Jordan's skill set.
Starting point is 00:17:51 It's hard to say. And LeBron has all of that ability, and he has to play Stephon Curry's— Stephon? Why did I say that? That's not his name. Stephon Curry's game. With this, like, jump and fl drag and try to get a foul it's so it's yeah i hate the game now i really do hate it it's so painful to watch it's not the same i
Starting point is 00:18:13 don't okay to make this is a quick sidebar here we did this sorry no no it's totally fine because for the extra 20 points per game that everybody scores now as compared to the mid-90s, I don't think it's worth it. I really don't. It takes so long to get it. I don't enjoy it. I watch basketball all the time, and it looks like a fucking pickup game half the time because it's a huge outlet pass. It is maybe one pass. Someone's firing up a three, and then they're running the offense off of the possibility
Starting point is 00:18:46 of getting an offensive rebound. You fire it up if he goes in, great. If not, then we'll try to get this, and then that'll be our play. And it's like, what the fuck are you doing? That's not how – you should probably try to get a good shot so you don't have to worry about getting the offensive board because offensive boards are tough to come by. I'm just saying if you watch – and also we're biased because we were kids and we watched it when we grew up there, but compared to other eras, compared to the eras before that, which people can glorify in nostalgia, I don't think there's a better era than that.
Starting point is 00:19:16 I don't either. and the late 80s kind of before my time with the nba but when i watched the film of it i'm like holy shit when you watch the showtime lakers and all this crisp passing and this shit and then somebody hits a the fucking defense it's so good it's not just that it's like the the above the rim play of that time yes unbelievable the dunks the fucking the ollie oops that no one cares about that doesn't happen today as much because it much. Because it's not worth three points. That's why. So it's true. It's true.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Like the three-pointer made the game so much more exciting in the early 80s when they put it in. The ABA's innovation of that really helped a lot, made it exciting. But then now it's like. That's all it is. It's almost like it's kind of killed it now because they did the math on it, and it's like, well, if we shoot all these threes and hit this many, then we'll have this much more points. But that's not basketball.
Starting point is 00:20:11 If we get 40% of them and they're scoring 60% twos, we'll still win. What? Fuck you. Don't do that. I get that the math works out, but I don't want to watch that. You can't cut a fucking uh promo for the nba of just people raining threes that's not that's not a promo it's just remember that for that tnt promo yeah it'd be like oh god moves and passes and dunks and then the ending cut was
Starting point is 00:20:37 gary payton on a fast break lobbing the ball behind his fucking head no look and sean kemp drilling and it was like it was awesome what yeah yeah and it's so awesome and they don't they don't have that no they do not have that today it's no they don't and guys can do it too because when you it's just it's not that's not what the game is anymore no it's not it's a different fucking kind of game so kairi and james harden are nearly obsolete when it comes to that play because you've got guys that are just raining threes also they took away that bullshit where you jump into a guy when he jumps up that was harden's whole game and they took that away from him so that that's that hurts but that's his jump shots and stuff but his yeah his drives
Starting point is 00:21:20 he's fouled on threes all the time from bullshit. That's what Steph Curry does. Absolutely. Rat shit bananas. I hate him so much. He's very boring to watch. I mean, yes, it's when he would throw up like a 32-footer and it would go in. That's pretty exciting. And that's the drawn-up play.
Starting point is 00:21:39 That's the play, yeah. The coach calls that play from half court. What are you talking about? What the fuck is that? Why is that happening right now? Why are we doing this? Why are we doing this? It's not the end of the quarter.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Why'd you shoot that? It doesn't have the excitement of the behind-the-back passes and this going on and all this shit. It's not fun to watch. Whatever. I don't know what the solution is. I have no solution. That's the game. That's the math.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I'll still watch it, but I'm not going to enjoy it as much. That's all. I'll wait until the playoffs and then I'm in. No shit. So I can watch my teams fail again. Yeah. The Suns are going to be good this year, though, in the playoffs. Of course they are.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Yes. Just like last year. It's all going to win. No problem. Yeah. And they're going to lose again because that's what they did. The NBA's number one team. This year they played played fantastic i watched six or seven of the games uh they if they play like i watched them play they have a staggering chance this year we've said that
Starting point is 00:22:37 this is about the 14th year since i've been a suns fan and i've said that in different years not consecutive years but yeah i'm telling you, this is the time. I'm telling you, they got a chance. They always have a chance, Jimmy. They always have a chance. That's the problem. There's only 16 teams in this, James. And the Knicks, I just give up completely.
Starting point is 00:22:59 I'm tired. I'm just tired. I love them, but I can't anymore. I just can't. If I want to watch the Knicks, I'm just going. I love them, but I can't anymore. I just can't. If I want to watch the Knicks, I'm just going to go watch a game from like 94. I don't care. I'm going to go watch Starks and Ewing and Mason and Oakley. And watch the regular season because the playoffs suck.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Yeah, well, unless if they're playing the Bulls. But yeah, it got bad. So anyway, back to Sebastian here. All right. So no, we got those. That was needed, I think. Talk about today's game. What a fun sidebar.
Starting point is 00:23:29 This, by the way, this episode, I love it because it really, it bubbles. It's like water flowing downhill. It's getting faster and faster, the momentum. Like, everything starts out so good, and it just falls apart to where, by the end of it, the pace of the falling apart is rapid and disturbing for sebastian here so everybody likes him i mean he is television it's he's on tv he's the like i said the dallas morning news does a feature in the seventh grade all this shit he's on magazine covers as we'll talk about here. He's in high school hanging out with Derek Jeter and Jay-Z.
Starting point is 00:24:07 What? Oh, yeah. Because they're New York guys, and Jay-Z's a Brooklyn guy, and Jeter plays for the Yankees. It's insane. Jay-Z's about to buy the Nets, so that makes sense. There is no way you can have a normal perspective on the world at this point in time for you. God, no. Your life has never been normal there is a guy that's dancing on a yacht with bun b is standing
Starting point is 00:24:30 next to you next to you right here and then there's also a guy who's gonna have like 3 800 hits standing right there 3 700 hits and there's a lot and then he also plays baseball too and then there's and there's also baseball no i said I said 3,700 hits, not gift baskets. Not grand slams. That's a different thing. He'd give out his gift baskets. I wonder how many he'd have to have those made. Are we getting a new shipment of gift baskets in?
Starting point is 00:24:55 He's got a closet of them, right? He's got to have six, seven on hand at a time. He's got someone who's got a constant order in. We need another 60 gift baskets. He's been busy. Just in case a girl brings four or five girls with her. No shit. No shit.
Starting point is 00:25:10 So anyway, like you were saying, Jamel went to Providence College for all four years, Jamel Thomas, his brother, but didn't get a lot of playing time and ended up not playing very much. Sonny Vaccaro, who is the, I don't know if you know who Sonny Vaccaro is. No. There's a 30 for 30 about him, actually. He's the guy who started sneakers being a big deal. He's the guy who first started giving money to college coaches for the colleges to wear Nikes.
Starting point is 00:25:41 He's the guy who said, you've got to get jordan and make him your guy and do the yeah like he's the he's the kind of the architect of the nike whole basketball thing here that's all sonny so um yeah he's a he's a big fucking deal in basketball and he's the guy who also started and was in charge of all of these high school basketball tournaments. He was the one that did the Dapper Dan tournament, which was the one that was before the McDonald's All-American and the Adidas one and all that shit. So he's doing all that shit. So he said about Sebastian, quote, Sebastian is the most independent. He's light years ahead of them in terms of being a thinker.
Starting point is 00:26:21 is the most independent. He's light years ahead of them in terms of being a thinker. Sebastian has a chance to be more than Stefan Marbury because he's the most lovable of all these kids. He's cuddly. He's different but just gifted. That feels weird to say out loud, but okay. A grown man just called a high school kid cuddly.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Cuddly, yeah. I don't like that at all. Like a grown, like an older man who's got a heavy accent. He's like, he's cuddly. You know what I mean? He's just a cuddly guy. Stefan Marbury said, I think the comparisons are similar, but he's a lot better than I was at this age. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:55 He said he's so much further advanced, and that's from playing against top players because his class is tough and he's dominating it. So Telfair won his first, won the public school athletic league title as a 16 year old and that year he was also mvp at the abcd adidas camp which was his second time he'd been there before he was uh selected a third team you a usa today all-american and that was one of only three underclassmen to make the team.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Underclassmen meaning not a senior even in high school. He averaged, this was I think his junior year, 27 points, five assists, and three rebounds a game. Awesome. So he's just dominating. And this is against good competition too. This isn't like a bunch of 5'10 kids who are, I'm just playing for something to do. I just want to keep in shape. These are all people who are all trying to play college basketball here. He also led the East team at the USA 5th Annual Men's Youth Developmental Festival. developmental festival sounds weird like that that sounds very strange like it sounds like there's like a weird fetish thing or something
Starting point is 00:28:08 sounds like a pc way of saying special olympics no shit uh the coach there said about it he's the this is his high school coach said i don't want to mention anyone in the same breath with him he's just sebastian there's no one in his company. Okay. Wow. Yeah. The only person drawing more attention than him is LeBron James. But at that tournament, he was out with a wrist injury.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So Sebastian got all of the love. Oh, he got to showcase. Brilliant. He got to showcase there. Now, Sonny Vaccaro said this is the first time he met sebastian telfer he said that he can pick still remember his movie star smile oh he described and he's cuddly too remember that jimmy he's very cuddly he's a handsome son of a bitch isn't he he's a handsome cuddly infectious smile and having bastard he describes his smile as infectious, as a matter of fact, and described Sebastian as, quote, Mr. Congeniality.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Yeah. Nice guy. He said he was, quote, one of the most brilliant high school basketball players I've ever seen. And he's 17. He's 17, yeah. That's insane. He said that the first time he came in and got to play in the torn in the adidas that game when he was too young really he said that he you know the coach said he'd be fine with telfer practicing
Starting point is 00:29:31 with the team the first day and seeing how it went and uh they so they told telfer come on you can play sunny told him to come down and they gave him a uniform and everything and they said he was so happy to get a uniform. And Vaccaro says, it was probably the happiest smile I've ever seen in my life. Vaccaro loves him. They said that he spent a week running circles around all the older, bigger players. He was matched up against LeBron James at one point. This is when he was in eighth grade and LeBron was a freshman.
Starting point is 00:30:10 He's playing his same position? Just the way it came up in the in the defense there and he was 6-6 lebron at the time and you know telfer's 5-11 so but they said he did really well against him actually and it made everybody go wow he's got spunk that kid he uh marbury said that he thinks he's going to go to the pros he doesn't know if he's going to go to college. He said, quote, he's an NBA player. We're not talking about him making it or not making it. It's just whether he goes one, two, three, or four in the draft. He's going to make it if he stays on this path. That's it, man. They're really projecting.
Starting point is 00:30:37 I mean, he's a junior in high school. He might as well retire because it's all laid out before him. I mean, he's a – Just coast. Can we just cut to the hall of fame ceremony and then i'll do like commercials and be like a you know a gm of a team where i'll do some endorsement deals jay-z's got a yacht out in the turks and cacos i gotta get to i'm just gonna hang out there and we'll just skip all the rest it seems like a lot of work just for
Starting point is 00:31:00 no reason i mean it's gonna happen everyone says Sebastian said, though, I've got my own path. This is my path. Stefan is not holding my hands or dribbling the basketball for me. Everyone hypes it up, but the work I put into my game is not hype. So he doesn't want to constantly also have fucking Marbury mentioned in the same sentence with him. He's like, I'm me. He's him. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Which is fair. You better stick with that because Marbury is going to fuck it up. Oh, he's going i'm me he's him that's fine which is fair you better stick with that because marbury's gonna fuck it up oh he's gonna fuck it up bad as we know as reference the crime and sports episode on stefan marbury and you can tell taylor swift is soaring high her every move captured in the news cycle and devoured by her devoted fans she's broken billboard records and made grammys history not to mention becoming a billionaire in the process. But along the way, Taylor has had to wage war, first by taking on a very powerful, very famous manager, Scooter Braun, and then by going up against the biggest
Starting point is 00:31:57 live events company, Ticketmaster. Hi, I'm David Brown, the host of Wondery Show Business Wars. We go deep into some of the biggest corporate rivalries of all time. And in our latest season, Taylor Swift will shake up not only the music business, but Hollywood and the NFL. Follow Business Wars wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:32:27 see that the queen of the courtroom is back i didn't do anything you wouldn't know the truth if it came up and slapped you in the face i see he's not intimidated by anything i can fix that. New cases. She wanted to fight me. Leave her alone. Okay, so, um... This is not a so. This is a period. Classic Judy. Did you sleep with her? Yes, Your Honor. You married his cousin.
Starting point is 00:32:57 His brother. That's not him. Yes, ma'am. I would make a beeline for the door. The Emmy Award-winning series returns. How did I know that? I have crystal ball in my head. It's an all-new season.
Starting point is 00:33:11 It's streaming. You can say anything. Judy Justice, only on Freebie. So scouts rank him. This is the class of 2004 graduating high school class he's the ranked the number one player in the class of 2004 by all the scouting services unbelievable all of them that's that's crazy he uh i don't even know what to say about that that's insane he he's considered a five-star recruit by rivals..com, and that's wild.
Starting point is 00:33:45 So he's the number one in everything. So he is his high school's all-time leading scorer as well when he leaves. Lance Stevenson ended up breaking that in 2009. Really? Yeah, a future NBA player there. He was also named New York State's state's mr basketball following his senior season sick which is best player in the state and his younger brother is also ethan also ends plays ball too a few years younger he ends up playing for idaho state you know what i'm playing so yeah man it's
Starting point is 00:34:17 wild um now the only knocks on him are he's a small point guard which who cares i love a fucking point guard like this by the way like this is a this is a guy like you see this guy dribbling up the court like you're gonna see some entertaining something fun every johnson was great to watch i'm like kenny anderson he reminds me because they're both new york guys like yeah he's a shooting guard though gary is he yeah yeah yeah he was a shooter he was a shooting guard he's a Kerry Kiddles. Is he? Yeah, yeah. He was a shooter. He was a shooting guard. He's a two. Tiny fucking two. He's skinny, but he's pretty tall, Kerry Kiddles. He's 6'6", 6'5".
Starting point is 00:34:50 Was he? Yeah, yeah. He's a bigger guy. He's not six foot tall. Who am I? I'm not thinking of Kerry Kiddles. No, maybe somebody else. But, like, you know, Kenny Anderson is the same.
Starting point is 00:34:59 He's a Telfair type of player. Marbury, Telfair, Anderson, New York City point guards, undersized, nasty handles, good passer, but can score a lot. Even though, like Kenny Anderson, when he came into the league, he had to try to kind of dial that down a little bit, that whole scoring thing. And I think it hurt him a lot. And that's kind of what happens to Telfair, too. So they say he's kind of an erratic shooter which he's a kid all kids are erratic shooters magic johnson was a terrible shooter when he entered the nba he was you know what i mean michael jordan couldn't shoot beyond 15 fucking feet with dependability he really he wasn't an
Starting point is 00:35:38 outside shooter he worked on it and got there but when he came into the league that wasn't his game yeah you know that wasn't his thing he's trying to make athletic moves to get to the rim it's an easier shot he was great at mid-range jump shots but in north carolina they didn't have a lot of setup plays for you to shoot long ass jump shots that didn't count for any more than the ones that were closer because this was the early 80s so right you know he uh they had him um but he said he practiced so hard that he got better in his senior season at you know know, shooting the outside shot. He worked out a lot and ate a lot, and he gained 27 pounds from his sophomore year to his senior year. Holy shit.
Starting point is 00:36:13 So now he's 182 pounds, but, like, you know, solid muscle. That's awesome. Yeah, so he's a tough little son of a bitch. An NBA executive at the time said, that's what impressed me the most. He sought out criticism and responded to it. That's unusual, especially for someone so young with so much hype. Yeah, what am I not good at? Let me fix that, which is really good.
Starting point is 00:36:35 One of the guys here, he's a scout here. He was a big-time scout on the East Coast. He said that he really reminds him of Marbury a lot. He said he's worked hard on his body and is much thicker now though not like stefan was stefan was stronger and a better shooter but sebastian's a better penetrator and sees the floor better he's also quicker though so he said mind you we're talking degrees of quickness here but i mean stefan marbury if you watch him quick as shit so for him to to to be compared to him in quickness is good.
Starting point is 00:37:06 Now, he began practicing his autograph in the fourth grade. And he said during his senior year he signed thousands of autographs. He said, I never imagined it would be like this, but it's been a lot of fun. Part of being a basketball player is being an entertainer, so I try to entertain. All right. Well, now he's got to decide college or nba what are we doing stefan you mean sebastian or sebastian yeah stefan's already made his decision sorry he's just like him yeah so originally he decides college i'm
Starting point is 00:37:38 going to college oh god he's going to be a one and done guy but he's going to go. He's going to be a one-and-done guy, but he's going to go. And he commits to the University of Louisville to go play under Rick Pitino. Go be a Cardinal. Okay, so he's going to go play under Pitino. And a year in college probably would have been good for him. Yeah. Not really for his game, but just to transition from one place to another. To know playbooks and how things work out. I think just also transitioning from high school to the NBA is a crazy.
Starting point is 00:38:12 That's unbelievable. Yeah, it seems like you would just need a stepping stone to get your balance in the middle. But I totally get it, too. Why are you going to go play and make Rick Pitino money this year and you get shit and you know your family lives in the projects as the other hand see that's it's kind of a hey you know guys I'm gonna go get comfortable in Louisville no no you guys all sleep in the same apartment all together I understand there's roaches and stuff but I'm gonna get more comfortable in Louisville free it's hard to tell your family that I don't buy one more calendar and start the countdown yeah we'll get we'll get back to you
Starting point is 00:38:42 or do you end do you end everybody's poverty now like yeah immediately uh you know it's hard to do hard to say no to that so i wouldn't um and neither would people in any sport everybody yeah i can't imagine anybody wouldn't want their whole family uh if you all got great relationships and you're struggling together let's all get the fuck out of here. Absolutely. I was only saying the college was for his game would have been better to have a year of limbo. If he could like stop time for a year and just play in Louisville and then come back and have that knowledge, he would have been better off is what I mean. So he but still he's got these people at his at the his high school games have T-shirts that say NBA or college on them. Like they made up T-shirts for that and handed them out and shit.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Patino says he'd fit in perfect with him. They want to get him in there and have him do it. NBA personnel, they talk to a bunch of these GMs, and they all say that Telfair should go to college. They all say he should go to college. But then in the gms and they all say that telfair should go to college they all say he should go to college but then in the next breath they all go i mean he's a surefire lottery pick though if he comes out we're gonna take him so it's hilarious he should go to college but i mean you know it's fucking so funny go to college uh but we will give you money right now a lottery pick too if you're a lottery pick that's cash you're're a lottery pick, that's cash. You're getting paid. Right up front.
Starting point is 00:40:06 That's something, man, to do there. Plus, he's so famous. If he goes out right now, Adidas has been looking at him because he's been going to those basketball camps since the eighth grade. He's their MVP, for fuck's sake. They're like, whenever you do go pro, we got a shoe deal here for you. So that's the other thing. There's guaranteed money there for him. So it's really fucking hard uh patino said i told him as badly as i want to coach you if you can be a lottery pick i would
Starting point is 00:40:31 advise you to go so patino that's to give him credit if he can be the first ever point guard taken out of high school that's great oh yeah i gotta give patino credit for saying not bullshitting him look yeah it'd be great for me if you came here and it'd be fine for you. But if I was a lottery pick, I'd take that right now. I'd take that money and so should anybody else in the world here. So he says, though, it's 50-50. He doesn't know what he's going to do. He's not sure yet.
Starting point is 00:41:01 But his family is saying when they're filming for the documentary, it seems like he's definitely going to the NBA. Yeah. Yeah. One of these basketball scouts said he's as mediagenic as any kid I've ever seen. He's got a magnetic smile. He's polite. And he looks like the boy next door. He just made up a word. I've never heard. Yeah. It took me a second to read it there. Mediagenic. I mean, it makes sense. He just made up a word. I've never heard mediagenic. Yeah, it took me a second to read it there. Mediagenic. I mean, it makes sense.
Starting point is 00:41:28 You know what he's saying. I get it. That's definitely a scout word. Mediagenic. Yeah, he's going to be good with the media. He's handsome and good at this shit. We can use him. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:41:39 In his senior season, he averaged 31 points and nine assists a game. Oh, for Christ's sake. That's just silly man they did say though he had a couple of bad performances on the way to the city title game and the team lost the final game there as well and he didn't play wonderfully but um he didn't do too great in two postseason all-star games he scored a combined eight points in the mcdonald's all american game and the hoop summit at the final four oh that's against the best so yeah they didn't really care for that but
Starting point is 00:42:11 uh finally on february 8th 2004 in his apartment building where him and his family lived there in coney island three men were shot in the elevator okay and uh two were college two were killed and the other was critically wounded yeah so he said i know i can handle living there but i don't know about my family yeah he said i've seen uh more friends killed than i can count i don't want to put my family through that much longer yeah and on top of that in march March 2004, for the March issue, he's on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It's just him. Here I am. So, bye.
Starting point is 00:42:53 I'm not going to college, man. Can't. Can't do it. Can't do it. Hey, Mom, if you, I'm just going to say, I understand it's rough, but if you hear gunfire, just try to duck down for about another few months I'm gonna go fuck around and bang some girls down in Kentucky and just dick around with college for a while I've heard it's hard to say that bathtub
Starting point is 00:43:11 it's safer so climb in there don't go outside for about a year that's a good idea just just stay in and then I'll take care of it after that I think it'll be fine so he's on the cover though which is crazy absolutely crazy he said that uh um i guess the cover was supposed to be with him and stefan marbury together
Starting point is 00:43:36 like new this a new generation and all that kind of shit steph wouldn't do the cover with him apparently from what he says is it because he didn't want to take the attention or he wants to drive his own brand? Let's get into it here. I guess at this point is when they kind of had a little bit of a beef, Steph and Bassey here. And he tells a journalist, this is Sebastian, quote, I've got something good for you. He said, me and him were supposed to do the cover together, and he didn't want to do it. And the Sports Illustrated source confirmed that Marbury, quote,
Starting point is 00:44:12 emphatically shot down the idea of sharing the cover with his cousin. So he doesn't want it. He doesn't want it, no. He said that Telfair thought his development made, this is what Sebastian said, he said that it's making Stefan look bad that people are excited about me. He said, I can't tell you how many NBA people, that's the first thing they ask. Is he anything like Stefan? When they find out I'm not, they're relieved.
Starting point is 00:44:37 We did an episode on Stefan. He's not the easiest guy to coach. He's not the easiest guy to have on your team. He's fucking up a lot. He's got a easiest guy to coach. He's not the easiest guy to have on your team. He's fucking up a lot. He's got a lot of issues here. So now publicly, Sebastian's saying they're excited when they hear I'm not like him, which is going to obviously piss his cousin off. And that's a positive thing for me and a bad thing for him.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Yeah, and he's throwing his cousin under the bus here too. So I guess there was a couple of big pickup games on Coney Island that in Coney Island that he they both played in. And I guess Telfair played better than Stefan. So that was part of it. Apparently they were pissed off there. And the Telfair family as well. Apparently they both the Marbury's and the Telfair's used to both live in the same projects one floor apart from each other. The Marbury's and the Telfair's used to both live in the same projects one floor apart from each other.
Starting point is 00:45:34 Then once the Marbury's got out, the Telfair's believed that Stefan should have offered them more support, financial support. Maybe help us out, too. Yeah, maybe help us out, too. But after he went to the NBA, made millions, the Telfair's stayed in the projects. And so Marbury said they asked Stefan about this. Hey, this is what Sebastian's saying. And Marbury said, quote, I'm not going to sound like them. I'm not putting myself out there. They will see soon enough. They will understand what the NBA game is really about. They think it's just money and cars and houses, but, and it's a billion different things you have to go through. They have no idea about this life. Forget about me having a big family.
Starting point is 00:46:06 Forget that I take care of 25 people. They don't understand that. In regular society in this world, people work for their families. I have a wife, kids, a mother, a father, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews. I don't work and I don't play ball for the tell fairs. I play ball and work hard for my immediate family.
Starting point is 00:46:22 And whatever I can do to help sometimes, then I do that. I would love to have a yacht and to charter planes, but I can't do that. I've got to take care of my family. That's the reason I play basketball. I can't do that. I have too many DUIs to pay for. Yeah, I have so many. China, I've got to go over there and play.
Starting point is 00:46:38 It's a big issue. So before the NBA draft, he declares for the 2004 draft before the draft even fucking happens. He signs a guaranteed contract worth over $10 million for five years with Adidas. Oh, so he's immediately hasn't played a fucking dribble and he's got 10 million bucks in the bank. Multimillionaire already. Already. So whatever he's about,
Starting point is 00:47:02 he's going to, that's, you know, more than he's going to get for his first basketball contract in all likelihood. So – because he's – depending on where he goes. 2004 draft, Jimmy, number one pick. 2004?
Starting point is 00:47:13 Jesus. 2003 was LeBron. No. Who was it? It was not. That's earlier. Who you got? Amari Stoudemire was – oh, yeah, you're right.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Jesus, that was in like 98 or 99, huh? Yeah, 2000. 2000? Something like that yeah because marion was 99 2004 is it is it uh is it steph curry no no he's way later 2010 huh yeah dwight howard you are confused you're five years earlier howard wow right howard number one i don't think i watched this draft no this was uh yeah this was like a low period here is pierce in this too no he was already in the league for a while yeah uh amika okafor number two oh my gosh yeah ben gordon to
Starting point is 00:47:53 chicago number three now you're coming back to you this area oh i missed all this sean livingston uh to the clippers devin harris uh luau, of course, here in that draft. Ego Dalla's in this draft. Ike Ego Dalla? Yep. Really? Yeah, or Andre. Andre's in this one.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Yeah, that's Ike. Yeah, and then number 13 overall. Yeah, I think so. I think so, yeah. Well, number 13 overall. By the way, right before number 14, the Utah Jazz picked chris humphries the future kim kardashian husband is that right absolutely but number 13 portland trailblazers select sebastian telfair from high school so i think i missed all of this nba yeah this is jr smith is in this uh
Starting point is 00:48:41 gee who else oh delonte west is in this draft i was just gonna say delante west he's into it yeah so this is the al jefferson this is that era they're kind of they're filling like it's a lot of six men in this draft like you know a lot of six men not a lot of stars fine yeah a lot of decent guys but not like giant stars but obviously dwight howard probably excluded from that so um he said that he uh felt a sigh of relief once he got drafted obviously because he was going oh shit i'm dropping out of the lottery here um that was the whole point but he said portland called him about five minutes before the draft you know they picked him to tell him about it so he was he was good he said quote i was nervous until they called my name
Starting point is 00:49:25 this is by the way from an article that says that quotes him as saying that and then attributes it to a quote a champagne soaked tell fair said a little later at pal jay-z's 4040 club where he hosted a party for about 100 family and friends unbelievable yeah he's also underage by the way let's not forget that here. Not that I give a shit. Yeah. Champagne soaked in public. Not that I care, obviously.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I don't give a shit. He does shit. Yeah. If you're in the NBA and you have that kind of pressure on you, you can probably have some champagne, I think. You probably need it. You probably need it. So Portland said, quote, it was a matter of where we were going to take him 13 or 23 we didn't know if he was
Starting point is 00:50:06 going to last to 23 this guy is a special talent passing the ball we thought sean livingston who the clippers took at number four was the only other player in this draft who could pass the ball like telfair okay so uh he wasn't invited to the like draft green room that they invite the top picks there. Yeah. He must've just missed the cut of being invited. And, uh, he said though,
Starting point is 00:50:30 he was much happier to celebrate with the people he grew up with his family, his friends, Jay Z, much happier to celebrate with them rather than quote a bunch of people who don't mean anything to me. Okay. Yeah. It is something.
Starting point is 00:50:43 Yeah. He's, um, he's a little pissed off, I think. He's the number one player in the country in high school, and they didn't invite. But, I mean, you're also competing with the top fucking 800 in college. It's true.
Starting point is 00:51:01 It's weird, though, that everybody thought he was going to be a lottery pick and they didn't invite him. That seems strange. Usually they invite anyone who they think is going to be a lottery pick that's kind of how they usually and and anybody with some hype behind them yeah if it's a recognizable name and face that's a month before he was on the cover of sports illustrated right that seems like recognizable probably invite him to the green room but don't be bitter about it though just take it out on him on the court that's all a bit more people in this country knew who he was than Chris fucking Humphreys. I guarantee you.
Starting point is 00:51:26 And Dwight Howard probably. Yeah. And he was the number one pick. So the next day, he graduated from high school at 1230 and then boarded a flight to Portland and he said, quote, this is just the start. You celebrate with your family, then you're back in the gym. Yeah. Grace.
Starting point is 00:51:47 He's got it all before him. the world is beneath his cock right now he's never mind at his feet he's got the world at his cock at the moment like he's got he just threw his high school diploma in the trash and doesn't give a fuck no this is he's like scarface achievement of my life j. The whole world's a pussy just waiting to be fucked right now for Sebastian. It's 100% smart face. Yeah, ready to go. Forming an orderly queue, as the in-betweeners would say. Froffing at the gash. Froffing at the gash.
Starting point is 00:52:16 So 2004, 2005, he goes to Portland, and he's ready to go, and this is a bad team. Coach fired, middle of the season, all that sort of thing who was the coach they had two coaches that year maurice cheeks and kevin pritchard oh cheeks yeah they fired mo cheeks being a coach yeah they got a coach he coached for a while team goes 27 and 55 ouch. Jesus. Not good. Fuck. There's a lot of guys on this team that I didn't know were still in the league at this point. Put it that way. Like who? Well, Nick Van Exel, for one.
Starting point is 00:52:52 Oh, wow. Did you know Nick Van Exel was still in the league in 2005? Until 2004. I didn't. You got Sharif Abdur-Rahim, Derek Anderson. Oh, my. Yeah. Who else here?
Starting point is 00:53:05 Darius Miles was still young. This is the who's who of 1995. Reuben Patterson, Zach Randolph, who was pretty young at the Theo Ratliff, who was still banging around. Damon Stoudemire, 10 years in the league. These are all 10-year guys. Yeah. Kind of a whole team of them here.
Starting point is 00:53:20 So not a great team. And Sebastian plays in 68 games starts 26 he uh you know 19.6 minutes per game so he's not doing only playing you know not too much he's definitely a backup he averages 6.8 points 3.3 assists a game yikes it's not really that great. That stinks. He's also 19 years old. Yeah, he's a kid. He does make $1,559,280 from the Blazers that year and then makes a little more than that from the Adidas also. He's made almost $4 million this year.
Starting point is 00:53:56 He's all right. He's doing fine here. The Blazers did not make the playoffs, obviously. He says that he plans to go home and catch up with his family and friends on Coney Island. Don't do that. I'm going to break crime and sports rule number three, and I'm going to head home for the offseason. Year one. Yeah, try to show everybody that I'm still the same guy I always was, because that's always a good decision.
Starting point is 00:54:19 Yeah. No, guys, I'm not too good to hang out out over here. No, it's fine. I'm not better than you. I'm not better than you. Yes, you are. You have $4 million. They're in the projects. Get out. Yeah. No, guys, I'm not too good to hang out out over here. No, it's fine. I'm not better than you. I'm not better than you. Yes, you are. You have $4 million. They're in the projects.
Starting point is 00:54:28 Get out. Yeah. Cut a check and fucking go somewhere else. Get them out of the projects with you. Be that guy. That's how you show you're not better than them. Yeah. Well, he wants to get back there.
Starting point is 00:54:43 He said, quote, I must get Chinese food. New York Chinese food is legit. It's goddamn good. So yeah, he's got to get back there. That's one of the first things I want when I come back here too, all the time. He says that his mother chose to stay in the neighborhood despite the fact that he offered to get her out. She wanted to stay there. Really? He said so. He just drives his Bentley into the projects to go see her, which is probably... That is...
Starting point is 00:55:10 We'll draw some attention. Don't do that. But no one's going to fuck with Sebastian Telfair's shit, because he's the hero right now. He's from there, yeah. He's their hero, and he's coming back there. If you're a 16-year-old kid who's a little badass running around, you're like, oh, that's the coming back there. If you're like a 16-year-old kid who's a little badass running around, you're like,
Starting point is 00:55:27 oh, that's the motherfucker right there. I'd have worshipped him if I was 16. Good God. Also, a lot of people that, if you're willing to come back there, those people won't fuck with you just because of that fact. Yeah, exactly. You just drove a Bentley into the projects.
Starting point is 00:55:40 We don't fuck with that guy. But if no one's around, your ass is getting robbed. So be careful. It's one of the two yeah which do you want you're betting on the first one it's tough uh so he said portland was tough for him because there's a lot of i just described all of those kind of like former all-star and borderline all-star players who are kind of seventh eighth ninth tenth year in the league you know not huge stars but still guys like damon stoudemire think they're hot shit you know things like that oh the other part is so brutal of this too of the the timing of him being
Starting point is 00:56:18 so famous and yes and paid because the world is about to change dramatically financially. And that's fucked to do to a child. Jesus Christ. I feel bad for him. It's a lot. So he said that it was hard in the Blazers locker room. Even the coach, Nate McMillan, who used to play for the Sonics back in the day, he said, quote, given all the hype coming in, Sebastian definitely had some teammates who looked at him differently. He said that another player on the team said the guys on that team weren't good mentors for him they said that between the adidas deal and
Starting point is 00:56:50 all that they just kind of froze him out like oh you think you're hot shit fuck you rather than seeing if he was a decent kid and then trying to help him be a better player they were like i'm taking my job and being more famous than me fuck your ass you know yeah at the end of my career i need this exactly it's the other thing he said that he didn't play very well he said i looked at myself and the way i played last year when we had a different system and i thought that sometime in my career i could be a good player in this league i never felt any pressure i just worked hard and did what i needed to do then we got a one two punch that came and stepped into that position and there's really nothing i could do he had a chance to start and then he got a little he had got a little dinged up and then
Starting point is 00:57:29 he a couple of guys kind of came in and took his place is what happened uh coach mcmillan said he's still trying i think to figure out how he can help this team there's been so much talk about his shoot first mentality that i think right now he's thinking uh he's thinking as opposed to playing and that's what i've told him play your game i got him out of his flow yeah this is the transition point of the nba to turning into something else and that yeah the passing uh passing became a big deal with with uh point guards well score first point guards are huge now but back then yeah back then if you fucking brought the ball up the court, stopped outside the three-point line, and popped a fucking shot off before anything happened in your offense,
Starting point is 00:58:10 your coach would pull you out of the game for that. He'd be like, what the fuck are you doing? That's not the play. Even if the guy was playing 10 feet off of you, they'd be like, what are you throwing up fucking? Get it in. What are we doing? That's ridiculous. Whereas now, that would be like, why didn't you take that shot? know you had a fucking foot of room you should have fired it up right away
Starting point is 00:58:28 mcmillan says later on too sebastian was just 10 years ahead of his time yeah if he came in in 2014 he'd have been a score first point guard he'd have been a giant fucking star huge star they would have let him play his game because that's the way the game is now but that's not the way the game was his timing was completely fucked on all on all facets on all facets here um so he said that this situation is the most difficult thing he's ever had to go through which shows you that he hasn't had a lot of difficulty so far in his life uh i don't know i'm a project he still hasn't had enough I'm rich everybody loves me but a couple of guys on my team are sort of standoffish to me it's the hardest thing yeah hardest thing I've ever had to go through in my life a couple guys at work are a little a little dicky never never
Starting point is 00:59:16 gone through that anybody out there have we never gone to work and be like yeah that guy's kind of a jerk huh couple guys at my job don't like the new guy yeah i've made ten dollars an hour and had everybody there be an asshole this is for one and a half million sebastian sebastian i'm giving you a million dollars what's wrong with you so he says right now i this is when he starts using himself his name in the third person by the way which is he does this all the time from here on out. Right now, I don't know who I am. I'm definitely not Sebastian Telfair.
Starting point is 00:59:54 What? You dick. In 2005, he and his wife have a daughter named Samaya. So that's a nice name there, 2005. So he's got a daughter. 2005, 2006, in Portland again, obviously. February 15th, 2006, which is right around the trade deadline here on the middle of the season. That's also Valentine's Day.
Starting point is 01:00:18 The day after, yeah. February 14th? This is the 15th. Oh, 15th. Well, 14th, definitely Valentine's Day. The Trailblazers are in Boston here, and they fly a private plane. Trailblazers do, obviously. All those teams do.
Starting point is 01:00:36 And on that private plane, which is sitting at Boston's Logan Airport there, a handgun is no on the team plane in his shit it's found in a pillowcase belonging to telfer as the plane was being prepared for a flight from boston to toronto so internationally which definitely he's gonna move that to canada but also his holster is a pillowcase it's holsters a pillowcase on the team plane the team play who is gonna on the team plane why do you need to be armed why do you need to be armed with a gun in a pillowcase like a pillowcase what's you're on the team plane what if damon stoudemire makes a move you're gonna dip into your pillowcase what are you theo ratliff is a big guy he's huge i mean you never know sheree sheree pretty tall he's pretty tall. He's a pretty tall guy.
Starting point is 01:01:25 He's a good scorer. I don't know. Maybe he'll fuck you up, too. Fucking. And it's Sebastian's handgun. Oh, it's his handgun and his pillowcase and his shit. Idiot. He explained to the local authorities here, who wanted to chat with him about this, that
Starting point is 01:01:38 the gun belonged to his girlfriend, and he had inadvertently grabbed the wrong bag when leaving for a road trip. You know, the gun in the pillowcase bag that we all have in our house. Grab the pillowcase instead of my Louis Vuitton. What? I keep a lot of my shit in pillowcases. I had a shaving kit I thought I was grabbing, but apparently it's a loaded 9mm instead.
Starting point is 01:01:58 I apologize. My bad. Yeah, I was going to take it across an international border as well, because that goes over really well in Canada. I grabbed the wrong bag. Yeah. The pillowcase. One thing they love in Canada is handguns from the United States being flown over their borders by NBA players. They love that over there.
Starting point is 01:02:19 Carrying it over his shoulder like Santa Claus's sack. his shoulder like Santa Claus's sack. I pictured it on the end of a stick like a bindle, like tied up like a hobo sitting outside of a train station with a can of beans on a fire. He's an asshole. A gun in a pillowcase. It's my girlfriend's. I hope it was the only thing in that pillowcase. I think it was.
Starting point is 01:02:40 It was in a pillowcase, like wrapped up in his stuff in a bag. So he was like, I grabbed the wrong bag. I have two travel bags. I have one that's the non-pillowcase gun in a pillowcase, like wrapped up in a stuff in a bag. So he was like, I grabbed the wrong bag. I have two travel bags. I have one that's the non pillowcase gun in a pillowcase bag. And then, of course, like we all have, I have a bag where I keep a gun in a pillowcase in there. Wrong one. Sorry. Idiot.
Starting point is 01:02:56 It was dark. One's dark blue. One's black. It's hard to tell the difference. You know how it is. how it is so the uh regional spokesperson for the tsa here the transportation security administration said we did uh we did sweep the plane and we did find the handgun and it was a loaded handgun perfect once we got once we got that turned over uh to the state police in boston so they turned it over to the state police turns out the gun is registered in Oregon, which, by the way, is definitely not
Starting point is 01:03:25 Boston or Toronto. Let's see, let's see the country. To his girlfriend, Samantha Rodriguez, who is his girlfriend of five years. They're just about to get married, as a matter of fact, and they'll be his wife later and, oh boy, will she have an interesting road with him.

So it's turned over to the Massachusetts Port Authority who said no charges will be filed for this.
Starting point is 01:04:45 They're going to let him go with no charges. It's hers. We understand. Clearly an accident. Try that on your next United or American flight across the country and call it an accident and see what happens. It's different when you're flying private. Throw a gun in a pillowcase. Yeah, just throw it in there and stick it on your Delta flight.
Starting point is 01:05:04 Don't do that. By the way, we're not inciting some sort of terrorist act or anything like that. It doesn't look like it has a body count on that pistol. You never know. Those people on the internet singing on the plane might be there singing Jesus song. So you might need it.
Starting point is 01:05:17 You might need it. That out of your, your fucking pillow. Okay. Fuck. By the way, I think everyone's seen that video. I can't believe it.
Starting point is 01:05:27 I can't believe it. I don't care what it is. Any form of religious fervor on a fucking plane, I consider dangerous behavior. I don't want to hear about. That's what 9-11 was about. It was about religion. I don't want to hear about how you know that heaven's going to be wonderful and that you're going there we're not going there now motherfucker because i'm landing in fucking denver so you sit the fuck down and chat about going to heaven later because i'm not
Starting point is 01:05:55 fucking no talk of heaven when we get none of that bullshit care how happy it is sit your fucking punk ass down before i beat you with my backpack if i have to check my safety razor you have to check your jesus talk yeah what the fuck anything any religion the play the plane is a non-religious fervor zone of any kind that i get that you know a bunch of guys ruined it for everyone else i understand but it's fucking ruined and it ain't happening metal tube of atheism today i get worried yeah that's we're all gonna sit there you know we are passengers on this plane right now when we land then we turn back into christians and muslims and hindus and any other fucking thing you want to be on the plane that shit is silent you have silent prayers to yourself
Starting point is 01:06:39 because if i see anyone praying on a plane what the fuck are you praying about what are you gonna do where do you feel why are you so worried yeah i'm worried i just go i that's i don't like flying i'm i don't i any bit of yeah any bit of of of anything anxiety inducing behavior fucking knock it off stop we're on a plane i'm already stressed out about this right we're already doing the most anxiety inducing behavior on the planet we're not on the planet we're spitting in god's face if to put it in the terminology you'd understand we just talked to loogie spit it in god's face and then you're gonna fucking sing a song about it and dance on it and he's gonna make us plummet from the sky if that's what you believe also you think he's in the sky. Look out the window. Do you fucking see him? Where is he?
Starting point is 01:07:25 Button it. Not a word about him. Just shut up. So, yeah, I don't want anybody singing about anything on a plane. Here's what I want you to do on a plane. Shut the fuck up and put your headphones on. That's it. That's it.
Starting point is 01:07:38 I don't want you singing along to whatever fucking song's on it. I don't care if it's Joni Mitchell. Shut the fuck up. I don't want you bringing weird food on that i have to smell this is a communal environment where we're all doing a crazy dangerous thing everyone shut the fuck up and sit still as much as you can get up if you have to piss otherwise sit there until we land period don't even ask me if i'm going home yeah the answer is probably no what do you care i don't want to hear it. What do you give a shit? Shut up. Sit there.
Starting point is 01:08:07 It's going to be my answer from now on. What do you care? What do you care? For what? How does that affect your day? How's that going to help you? How's that going to help you, Eddie? We're defying gravity.
Starting point is 01:08:18 Shut the fuck up. Yeah. Shut up while we defy gravity, please. So, Jesus Christ. No charges will be filed here. Nate McMillan said that Telfair is going to continue to play for the team. He said, quote, everything is checked out as far as the Boston authorities and what happened. He says, this is McMillan again, it was a mistake.
Starting point is 01:08:40 I'm sure he's embarrassed by the situation. There's nothing he can do about it now except to make sure that he's aware where his weapons are. He's fine. He's okay. In a situation like that, I think it was smart of him not to carry the thing around. He didn't want to carry that thing around, so he never did. Did he bring an opportunity to carry it around? It's in a fucking pillowcase on the plane.
Starting point is 01:09:02 He said, we do have security with us and he should make them aware of situations like that. He's packing heat, probably. He has security and he brought a pistol? Well, the team has security they walk around with. Why do you need a pistol? When you're with the team, you don't need a pistol ever. You're on a plane, then
Starting point is 01:09:20 the team takes you on their bus to the hotel, which the security has you here. Then you get on the bus, you go to the thing thing and then that's all security it's all security you're covered in security well in hand if you went down a gun and started firing off shots at something it would be crazy because there'd be people before them to do that that where that's their job you've stayed in hotels with with players staying in them yeah when they enter the hotel shit is blocked off you can't get near anybody separate i we got out of a show and i was ready to go to bed and they would not let me up to my
Starting point is 01:09:51 room until the fucking timberwolves went up to theirs yeah what the fuck is this yeah i'm tired i don't give a fuck about them yeah that's i'm not gonna autograph i don't and also too what am i gonna try to rob that six eight motherfucker motherfucker over there? Look at me. I'm 5'8. I'm tired. And that's a stretch, by the way. But I'm standing here before you in shoes being 5'8 and I want to go to sleep is what I'm getting at. So please.
Starting point is 01:10:20 I've got some rubber beneath my feet probably bumping me into it. Oh, I love it. But I want to bed. I don't even want to be on my feet i don't give a fuck what jersey they wear i don't care about them let me get me out of the way pretend i'm a trainer or something let me but i'm not allowed to do anything so he doesn't need a gun if they're doing that to me no i well and the coach here went on to say they are well aware they can't carry firearms on the plane obviously you know that is something bigger than the organization the league is involved in that he said whether you're doing something with the nba or whenever
Starting point is 01:10:49 you're doing something with the nba you can't carry any type of weapons whether they are guns or knives or anything else when you're doing business with the nba no shit the team fined him an undisclosed amount for violating team team policy or whatever And yeah, no one gives a shit, basically. They said he's apologized profusely, but he knows he must be held accountable for his actions. So they fine him like, you know, a grand or something. He's held accountable. So he's trying to figure out the league is what he's doing.
Starting point is 01:11:19 He said he lost a little bit of his swagger in his rookie year because he doesn't know what he's doing. Yeah, and it was humbling as fuck. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. He said, quote, it changed my mindset a little bit versus coming in and playing with confidence and having a little edge to yourself, being a little cocky, which is what you have to be in this league if you want to be competitive at a high level. People were saying, oh, maybe he's not as good as we said and all that kind of stuff. That plays a role in how you think the mental part of the game. He said, I had to learn the game. When I started, I didn't know how to play the game, meaning coming from New York and Lincoln High School, they really don't teach you how to play
Starting point is 01:11:56 basketball, especially in public school. When I got to Portland, I was playing with Zach Randolph. It was a big man's league, and I didn't understand how to play with those guys. And as far as getting those guys the ball and that other guys can do what you can do, I'm from New York where point guards, we dominate the game. And I thought I was the only one who could do that. It took me some years to understand. So he's just trying to figure it all out. This year he plays in 68 games, starts 30 of them, 24.1 minutes a game, 9.5 points, 3.6 assists.
Starting point is 01:12:31 So he's a backup, so that's okay. Not great, but, you know. That's pretty bad. It's better than the year before. He upped everything a little bit. So that's what you want, improvement. Still 20 years old, so, you know. He is making $1,676,280
Starting point is 01:12:47 dollars though so feeling good until june 28th 2006 when the portland trailblazers package up old uh sebastian and theo ratliff and a 2008 draft pick and send them all to the Celtics for Dan Dickow, Randy Foy, and Rafe LaFrance. No. Wow. If those guys told me they played in the NBA, I wouldn't believe them. You don't remember Rafe LaFrance? Never heard of any of these guys. I remember Rafe LaFrance, big like power forward.
Starting point is 01:13:18 I think he played at Kansas or something. He was a big goof in the NBA. Rafe? Rafe, R-A-E-F, LaFrance. Yikes. Yep. 2006-A-E-F. LaFrance. Yikes. Yep. 2006-07 season comes along. And right when it gets cooking, October 16th, 2006, he's hanging outside Puff Daddy's restaurant.
Starting point is 01:13:37 Justin's. What? Yeah. He's hanging outside the restaurant Puff Daddy owns. Justin's here. In New York or in Boston? In New York. He's chilling.
Starting point is 01:13:47 He's got a $50,000 chain around his neck. Brilliant. At this moment. And the chain is snatched off of his neck. Of course it is. Okay. Shortly after the chain is taken off of his neck, the rapper Fabulous was there as well. Okay. Fabulous. okay fabulous is here okay um his real name right skylar john jackson i have no fucking idea where fabulous's name is skylar skylar
Starting point is 01:14:18 like a white kid you played little league with. Skyler. He's hard. Skyler's hard, man. Don't fuck with Skyler. Skyler. Everybody. Yeah. Laugh, laugh, laugh. Skyler.
Starting point is 01:14:40 That's. I looked in your eyes. I was drinking. I looked in your eyes and there was the pure joy in jimmy's eyes when i looked into him oh i have tears i have tears now because the joy he has so good he wants to run into him and call him skyler so bad I can tell hi Skyler and then fall on the ground laughing as this guy's crew kicks him in the ribs it would be so worth the assault as Jimmy both moans in pain and laughs his ass off His name is Skyler. You're calling me Skyler. You're calling me anything other than Skyler. That's hilarious.
Starting point is 01:15:29 Oh, my God. I thought it was funny that Busta Rhymes' name is Trevor. That's nothing. Trevor's like an older guy's name. Skyler is a little blonde kid. Trevor is, or a girl. That is the least tough gangster name I've ever heard in my life. With S-K-Y-L-A-R, by the way.
Starting point is 01:15:48 Not even L-E-R. It's Skylar. Like it's very, like a Mylar balloon. Skylar. Mylar Skylar, they call it back in the day. It's like they just dropped the K off of Buick Skylark. That is amazing. So he is Skylark John Jackson.
Starting point is 01:16:10 Skyler. I'm just calling him Skyler here from now on. Forever. So the series of events. Yeah. Fucking Diddy's restaurant. Sebastian gets his chain snatched minutes later skylar gets
Starting point is 01:16:27 shot in the leg of course he does he's like you can't shoot me my name's skylar what are you doing that's why we shot you guys named skylar don't get shot outside puff daddy's restaurant do they so apparently skylar and three other people were riding in the same SUV here, were later arrested on weapons charges, and we'll talk about that. They found in the SUV, he stopped for medical attention, and there was like unregistered weapons all over the car. All over the place. Not great.
Starting point is 01:17:00 Two unregistered loaded guns in the SUV suv a nine millimeter and a 40 cal and uh skyler was taken to bellevue hospital while the other passengers were taken to the police station that's awesome then they brought in the next night they bring in sebastian to look at four separate lineups each including one of the four men arrested on the weapons charges including skyler now mind you but didn't identify any of them as the people who stole his chain okay this this whole thing isn't quite what it seemed to be at first it seemed like someone came here to snatch his chain and then shoot a rapper but it turns out that there might have been some beef between skylar and sebastian's
Starting point is 01:17:42 crews here that was the whole issue really Oh, really? And that this all might go together. So, yeah. But no one's talking is the thing because, you know, they're all involved in it. The police here said, this is the quote, Sebastian Telfair has told us he was the victim of a robbery
Starting point is 01:17:59 outside Justin's on Monday evening and left the establishment immediately thereafter. He further told us he has no knowledge of any incidents that occurred after his departure. He provided what information he has to the New York City Police Department. The police have indicated that Sebastian is fully cooperated with all requests regarding the investigation. That's his legal team putting that out. Telfair says, quote, I was in an unfortunate situation.
Starting point is 01:18:30 If you want to say I'm a bad person because I was out with my fiance, then that's what it is. I know who I am. My teammates in this organization know who I am. So, I mean, I got robbed. That's a lot of explanation for a guy that's a victim. You would just be like, I got robbed, motherfucker. What are you fucking talking about? I took my fiance out to dinner. I got robbed.
Starting point is 01:18:43 What the fuck? What are you, an asshole? I took my fiancee out to dinner and I got robbed. What the fuck? What are you, an asshole? That would be your response. But he, Doc Rivers said, quote, this is the coach at the time, Doc Rivers. He said, he didn't do anything. His name is in a bad circle. The same thing could happen to you or me. I don't know how you stay out of this.
Starting point is 01:18:58 I mean, he should be able to go to dinner. Sebastian's character will show he's a good guy. Same thing could happen. I don't wear fifty thousand dollar chains no no but your your two hundred dollar watch could get snatched right off your arm you don't know then i shoot fabulous skylar in the fucking leg oh i'll shoot skylar over my my two hundred dollar amazon watch i will shoot him over that don't get me wrong skylar you're going down mister i just put a new band on this thing i'm not
Starting point is 01:19:27 i will not have it taken from me i'm telling you skylar so he sebastian there's the police are saying there's an investigation that's going to go further where sebastian's just going i got robbed some unknown party shot that guy let's just call it a day, okay? There's no investigation. Nothing to see here. The cops are like, no, no, there's still something to see here. So Sebastian denied a few days later. By the end of the week, he's denying that he's under investigation for shooting Skyler. Now he's to the point where he has to deny that he's under investigation as being part of this plot.
Starting point is 01:20:05 He says the police are saying something different, though. Telfair says, quote, I wasn't being investigated for any shooting. My necklace was snatched from my neck. The police, though, the New York NYPD says, quote, we're investigating whether there's a connection between the reported robbery and the shooting. Yeah, what the fuck's happening? The police think one of Skyler's crew snatched off Sebastian's fucking necklace. Sebastian made a couple of phone calls. Ten minutes later, they're firing fucking shots at Skyler.
Starting point is 01:20:36 That's what they think happened. Yeah. I mean, he grew up in Pierre. He's got plenty of connections. If one thing that you have if you grew up around there is you have somebody to take a shot at somebody for you if you needed to especially if you're like the most famous guy they've ever met and ever will meet skylar hasn't had an album in a minute so he's probably out there boosting shit for money who knows uh but that it was a big thing people snatching chains was like a big thing of like yeah it's a disrespect thing like i got this guy's
Starting point is 01:21:02 chains like i got it's like you kidnapped something from it's a disrespect thing. Like, I got this guy's chain. It's like you kidnapped something from him. It's a different thing, yeah. So the New York Daily News reported that the surveillance video captured two members of Skyler's entourage robbing Telfair. Oh, no. So this plot thickens. Yeah, it was Skyler's crew.
Starting point is 01:21:21 And the paper sources claim that Telfair saw the men inside the club and made a phone call on his cell phone. And then the security camera reportedly captured the shooter leaving in a gray car. So their thing is definitely saw Skyler's boys take his shit. Sebastian sees them, makes a call, takes off. A few minutes later, a car comes shooting at those people for seemingly no reason. So the chain snatchers. So it doesn't look good here.
Starting point is 01:21:52 It looks bad for everybody. But apparently there was a number of 911 calls. One witness took down the make and license plate of the SUV leaving the scene. But apparently there was. And that turned out to be Skyuyler's suv where they found their unregistered weapons problem is nobody will say shit so it dies dies on the vine because it went away no one will talk everyone's going i don't know it's hard as fuck i don't know oh yeah no he's fucking hard yeah he's a he's a you know he's not saying shit yeah. So he'll get it back on his own terms kind of a thing. So 2006-07 Boston, they go 24-58.
Starting point is 01:22:28 Jesus Christ. Yikes. Were they that bad? They were fucking bad. And I think the next year they went to the finals, though. Is they got Paul Pierce? We'll talk about it here. What the hell?
Starting point is 01:22:38 We'll talk about it. So Sebastian, though, is starting during the season, tried to start the best dressed contest among the locker room guys oh my um yeah a friend of his while the reporter's talking or a friend of his who was in his apartment making smoothies so his kato said uh quote did he tell you about the best dress contest the team has before every game he started it so yeah yeah, he's, he's doing that. Uh, they said that the reporter then checked out what kind of fashion acumen he has. And so he's got all sorts of custom made,
Starting point is 01:23:12 you know, fancy designer, Joseph, a boot suits and shit like that. Yeah. Shit that like investment bankers where he's wearing that too. Um, he says that,
Starting point is 01:23:22 uh, yeah, he's doing all that. He said, this suit was made, this, uh, this suit was one that was made for me, he says. I picked the fabric. The suit has my name on the inside. He's doing all sorts of shit like that.
Starting point is 01:23:34 Other teammates also wear custom suits because you have to when you're 6'10". I read a book about the Knicks, and they were saying how that was like all the guys spent so much money on clothes back then to look good. And they'd have to do that anyway, because when you're Charles Oakley, if you're 6'10 and you weigh 285 pounds, it's really not on the rack. Nothing is made for you on Earth. Nothing's made for you where your shoulders are huge, but your waist is small. Like that's not a doesn't exist in nature. It doesn't exist in nature. So he said, though, he can get shit off the rack if he wanted because he's only six feet tall, but he does like to have it custom made for him.
Starting point is 01:24:13 He also has one. He has a watch with crocodile leather straps and 28 carats of diamonds on it. A watch. I guess I'll never be broke because if i ever get that rich i don't want that i don't know no i have no that's ridiculous i have no interest in that that seems stupid to me i'll put a new strap on my 200 watch i got on amazon like three years ago give me the gator strap i'll be pretty cool with yeah and the straps are pretty cheap i get like 20 bucks i'll wear that shit forever so he uh he said he grew up you know as a kid wanting all this expensive clothes and couldn't get it obviously so now he can
Starting point is 01:24:50 he's uh while he's doing the interview they said he's in head to toe louis vuitton and they said are you just doing this for the interview and he said no really this is what i wear he's that's how it is he said you know uh those guys would love to wear these designers but if you're six eight you're not getting into a louis vuitton shirt so he said that's how it is. He said, you know, those guys would love to wear these designers, but if you're 6'8", you're not getting into a Louis Vuitton shirt. So he said, that's why I win the best dress, because I can fit into the shit that they can't get. All right. Anyway, he should concentrate on being the best playing, because he's not doing that very well, rather than the best dress. He looks good.
Starting point is 01:25:19 Stinking. thinking unfortunately his whole game is in the locker room beforehand when he's showing off his crocodile watches and shit because he only starts 30 games plays in 78 20 minutes a game 6.1 points 2.8 assists career lows in both of those so ugly not good 1 million seven hundred ninety three thousand one hundred sixty dollars in salary though and year, he has a son, Jimmy. Oh? Sebastian Jr., of course. Of course. Out of everything he is, he's going down an icy road with his foot on the gas.
Starting point is 01:25:56 This is not good. And a bottle of schnapps between his legs that he keeps taking fucking hits off of. While he throws money out the window on clothing. Money that's on fire, mind you just he's burning money he's lighting it with the cigarette lighter and then throwing it out the window as he goes and now he's doing he's hangs out back home and now he's naming his son junior so it's you know that it's all going to turn here and it really does because shortly after that it's almost like the junior the junior gods knew and uh shortly after that, it's almost like the junior gods knew. And shortly after that, April 20th, 2007, Telfair is hanging out with a friend of his, Al Fuentes.
Starting point is 01:26:37 And it's, of course, early in the morning here, late night. And Telfair is driving his 2006 Range Rover 77 miles an hour on the Bronx River Parkway, which is a 45 mile an hour zone. Just burning. So he gets pulled over and he's driving with a suspended Florida license. Of course he is. Nice suspended out-of-state license. Where the hell does Florida enter this?
Starting point is 01:27:00 Who knows? Why is he on a Florida license? You know, what are you doing? You're playing in Boston and and portland you live your family's in new york so you get a florida license i have no fucking idea bought a place in florida some piece of shit to register that's probably what he did right to register everything too yeah i don't know possibly i have no idea so the police search his vehicle and they find a loaded 45 handgun under the passenger seat.
Starting point is 01:27:26 He loves having guns. Oh, this isn't the half of it. So he both tell Thayer and his buddy claim to neither of them have any knowledge of this gun. What gun? How'd a gun get in my car? That's crazy. Whose is that? Whose?
Starting point is 01:27:40 My God. Did you bring? I didn't bring that. I mean, I had my grandmother in the car earlier. Yeah. Sure. You didn't drop it. And my aunt Susan in the car.
Starting point is 01:27:49 I don't think it was hers earlier. She probably wouldn't leave it under the seat anyway. So, uh, yeah, they deny it. The police 45. Oh yeah. It's a big one. That's a lot of gun. It's a lot of fucking gun.
Starting point is 01:28:00 So, uh, they said that, so he was arrested, cuffed and put in the car. And, uh, they said that he was polite and cooperative. The spokesman said, our officer said he behaved like a gentleman. Sure he did. Very congenial and mediagenic. So there you go. That's why. So they charge him with a misdemeanor count of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle,
Starting point is 01:28:20 and then they're trying to figure out the gun so to know what kind of charges there have there now the celtics reaction to this is uh very silver obviously it's the celtics they say the players on the celtics have been explicitly warned this year to obey the team and league gun prohibition as well as state laws must we all be armed is basically what they said we take this very seriously and we'll act accordingly once the facts have been determined. So by the time the season's over, April 24th, 2007, reporters in the Boston locker room, and they noticed that his name plate has been removed from his locker already. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 01:28:59 So they don't plan on having him back, it seems like, at this point at all. You know what I mean? Like other guys' name plates aren't taken off. don't plan on having him back it seems like at this point at all you know what i mean like that other other guys name plates are taking off hold when the media is coming in there right well they found out that way uh they looked at it as you know i think it was a pr thing for them like we're gonna cut ties with him see you know that sort of thing um the celtics managing partner though said i wanted to let you know that we have removed Sebastian's nameplate from his locker in Waltham. The facts and circumstances of his case have not been determined, but he does not have a Celtics locker and we do not anticipate that he will.
Starting point is 01:29:34 Jesus Christ. Yeah, they said, though, he's not been waived or anything like that. He's still on the team. He's just in limbo here. He's just in limbo here. The NBA commissioner, David Stern, said our players do have an obligation to conduct themselves in a way that demonstrates the appropriate respect for the game. It's fair to say that if the charges were to be true, it wouldn't make me too proud to have someone I know speeding without a license with a gun in the trunk. But I don't know what the ultimate decision will be, however.
Starting point is 01:30:03 So, yeah. ultimate decision will be however so yeah um his attorney though sebastian's attorney says it always bothers me when you punish a young guy so severely before there's been a finding of fact i think that's wrong whether it happens in durham north carolina or in boston because he's talking about the duke lacrosse rape case which was going on at that point in time but your boy's speeding with a suspended license with the gun under his ass. It's not in the trunk. That's tough. It was under the passenger seat. It's within reaching.
Starting point is 01:30:28 Yeah, that's tough. Then his lawyer goes on to say that Telfair supports 17 relatives on his MBA salary. And they said, he's come so far and done so well, I don't think you have to throw him overboard. What does he say about it? Well, let's find out. You know what? Let's give him an in the wrong words. What do you say? I think let's find out what Sebastian say about it? Well, let's find out. You know what? Let's give him an in their own words. What do you say?
Starting point is 01:30:46 I think let's find out what Sebastian thinks about it. And what the fuck? Let's do it. In their own words, quote, I was stupid. I was thinking I'm not trying to hurt nobody. I'm not going to kill nobody. Rob no bank. You understand what you're doing wrong.
Starting point is 01:31:02 And as a basketball player, certain things are just not accepted. Certain things society is not going to accept from a basketball player. So if you can't take that, you can't be a pro. I really haven't had any trouble with the law, and then I got into that situation, and it put me in a bad situation. It took a lot for me to dig myself out of that. There you go, Sebastian. He's very upset with himself. He's going to take a lot. When asked why he had the gun, why'd you have a gun?
Starting point is 01:31:29 He said, quote, for no particular reason or particular situation. No, none. He said, just having it, being dumb. If I was thinking about it, I want to make sure I'm getting a contract and be an all star. And then for no reason would I have a weapon at no point in time. I don't know what that even means. It means nothing. That was the exact quote, by the way. That is all gibberish. He does a lot of gibberish talk when he comes around here. They said, does this have
Starting point is 01:31:55 an impact on your life, the arrest? And he said, I learned a lot from it, but I could have done without it. I didn't get much out of that other than playing for a lot less money than I should have and ending up not getting in better situations as far as teams that would want you. It follows me around. I kind of ruined my career with that. It was a bad move all around, but I don't beat myself up about it too much. If I was beating myself up about it too much, I wouldn't be sitting here right now. He says, though, I look at situations like that, he said, and talking about guys who have been successful,
Starting point is 01:32:26 and he said, maybe it's Rondo that goes in that trade instead of me, and I would have had the chance to play with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and KG. I look at situations like that also. He said, you have to trust the guys on your team, and they have to know that you're being professional. They know that you're a guy that off the court is not taking care of yourself. They're looking at you like that. You have to carry yourself the right that off the court is not taking care of yourself. They're looking at you like that. You have to carry yourself the right way off the court. And I wasn't doing that.
Starting point is 01:32:49 And having all the young guys and we're all trying to make it and they're letting another guy hang himself while they aren't saying anything, especially because I had that Adidas money. That's how they were looking at it. Like I already had the car they wanted. What? I have no. He's jealous. The team wants to win no matter what stop they want to win and they don't want to they don't want articles about you being pulled over in the middle of the night with guns that's nothing to do with adidas money rondo doesn't have those allegations so we'll use him that's all it is yeah that's a
Starting point is 01:33:20 tough yeah it's a tough one so on the season he didn't do very well. And he said that they were trying to tank to get that number one pick is what he thought. He said they were trying to get that pick. I was just playing basketball. I wasn't thinking about another contract. I wasn't thinking about any of that stuff. And I think I should have been as far as the game as being a business. He said that certain mistakes I made I wouldn't have made because i would have been thinking about ruining the goals i set for myself such as getting another contract being a
Starting point is 01:33:50 starter being an all-star all that kind of stuff some of the other guys were thinking that way so he was saying he was so unselfish yeah that he drove around with a gun because it was just me over being so unselfish he was yeah because he was so unselfish not thinking about the things that all the other guys were thinking about. Just playing ball. Just putting guns in my pillowcase. You know how it goes. Careers and goals are for other people. No shit.
Starting point is 01:34:13 He said, I had my Adidas deal, which kind of put me out of the box of the young guys, he says, of Rajon Rondo. He says, what I have is what they're trying to get. Boston was a tough year for me. That year, I was just all over the place. I'm running around trying to get my mom a house. I'm in the streets doing too much rather than just sitting back trying to take it in. That's what I do now. I just take it in. Understand what I got going good for myself. Cherish it versus worrying about what you don't have or things like that. I can't even recall what a 19-year-old does. I was playing on the edge a little bit as far as running around on the streets.
Starting point is 01:34:49 I just know at that time I should have been thinking different than what I was. Wow. Okay. He's still in the mindset that he has to hustle and has to be in the streets and be seen as the pinnacle of the hustle that's not it dog no no you don't have to do nobody people see you on tv that's the pinnacle that's the pinnacle if you are unattainable and untouchable like you can't be in my in my space that's pinnacle i've yeah i've still to this day never been in the same room as Shaq. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:35:27 He hustles much harder than me. A lot harder than us. That's pinnacle. Although we did outsell him when he was DJing across the street from us. We did outsell him on tickets. I was 500 feet probably from him stage to stage with more people surrounding me. There you go. So we got that. Take that, Shaq.
Starting point is 01:35:43 But he's never seen me on TV. No, no. He didn't know that that was happening across the street because we weren't important. people surrounding me so there you go so we got that take that but he's never seen me on tv no no he didn't know that that was happening across the street because we weren't important no or still aren't that was like a month ago so july 31st 2007 traded by the celtics with ryan gomes gerald green al jefferson the and theo ratliff and some picks for to the Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett. Oh, so they got him through that, huh? They got him for that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:12 He's followed Theo Ratliff everywhere. Him and Theo. Kevin Ratliff for the package deal. Now, with the Timberwolves, he signs a three-year, $7.5 million contract to remain with them. So they sign him up there. Timberwolves, 2007-08, finished 22-60 that year. Terrible. God awful.
Starting point is 01:36:31 Just bad. They love putting him on shit teams. They aren't setting him up for success. No, no, he's always on bad teams. 60 games he played in, 51 games started, so that's the most ever for him. 32.2 minutes a game, career high, 9.3 points a game, 5.9 assists. Oh, no. So not terrific.
Starting point is 01:36:51 Makes $2,562,426 of that year. Okay. September 2008, he pleads guilty to criminal possession of a weapon from his being pulled over, and he receives, you, sir, may fuck off three years probation. From New York State. From New York, yeah. And then also the NBA gives him a three-game suspension following the guilty plea as well because that's in their deal.
Starting point is 01:37:16 2008-2009, the Timberwolves go 24-58. Oh, God. They are so bad. Wow. They shit-can their coach because it was the same coach as last year and kevin mckale comes down from being their executive to coach them i remember that whole thing so he knows what he's doing yeah that year he uh sebastian to keep in mind he is 23 he's feeling washed up at this point guys used to not even come in the league till now he is a baby tim duncan was this age when he got
Starting point is 01:37:45 drafted like he was in college for this and this guy he's already had fabulous shot yeah he's already had uh one pumped in the fab of skyler's leg and uh has chain snatched this year 75 games he plays in starts 43 27.9 minutes a game 9.8 points 4.6 assists so he can't break that 10 point barrier he makes 2.3 million bucks though so there's that july 20th 2009 though he is traded by the timberwolves with mark madsen and craig smith for quentin richardson really to the songs to yeah so to the uh yeah to the clippers no this was to the clippers quentin richardson really to the songs yeah so yeah so to the uh yeah to the clippers no this was to the clippers quentin richardson played for the fucking yeah well that's july and then february 2010 there was a three-team trade after that where okay here we go the clippers oh wow traded by
Starting point is 01:38:41 the clippers to the cavaliers the cavaliers traded uhiers traded Elgauskas and Ymir Predzalblik, some shit, and a 2010 first-round draft pick to the Wizards here. Now, the Clippers traded Al Thornton to the Wizards. The Wizards traded Antoine Jamison to the Cavaliers. And then the Wizards traded Drew Gooden to the Clippers. That's how this worked. Okay, that was that deal. So this year
Starting point is 01:39:05 he plays in cleveland and la both doesn't do well in either one he averages under 10 points a game again makes two and a half million bucks though okay july no july 26 2010 so this is five months after he got traded he's traded again oh no by Cavaliers with Delonte West to package him up with Delonte. No, back to Minnesota. God damn it. For a couple of guys that don't matter. So, yeah, 2010-2011 Timberwolves, even worse than the teams he played with before, 17-65.
Starting point is 01:39:43 Oh, God damn it. It hurts hurts kevin mckay you're terrible at this that's kurt rambis coaching actually now with his fucking glasses so this year he only plays in 37 games because it's a mid-season thing uh but he played i think he got hurt that year actually 19.2 minutes a game 7.2 points three assists a game 17 wins 2.7 million dollars oh jesus god that's amazing i want to mix all those numbers up in a hat jesus christ 2011 2012 uh he's a free agent for a while here and december 9th so the season already started 2011 he signs as a free agent with phoenix suns and so they go 33 and 33 that year the suns yuck one of the mediocre years there um he was so bad in the beginning of the season that he got fucking pushed away from even
Starting point is 01:40:41 being the backup oh would they because the season already started wait a minute yeah Wait a minute. I think there was something up with the season that year. It must have been some kind of labor stoppage or something for a minute or some shit. That's 66. That doesn't work. No, everybody's records are short that year on the deal here. So he really didn't do very much. But then second half of the season, it all kicked in for him. He started being very good, being comfortable with the Sun system, was improving.
Starting point is 01:41:07 He said, second half of the season, I came out and played with a lot of confidence and got a lot better. It was a lot more consistent, so I'm satisfied for myself. And the team agrees. They say, quote, this is Alvin Gentry, the head coach. I think it was a brand new environment for him. I think he's been in other situations where he's struggled and people have just kind of put him to the side and let that be it we tried to stick with him because we felt like he had a lot of potential and he could do a lot of good things we like the fact that we thought his defense could be a huge factor for us and we just
Starting point is 01:41:38 kind of hung in there with him so he did also the fast and loose gun laws are nice for him also yeah he can care he's perfectly welcome to carry you know ar-15s in his car out here and no one will mind he can put a 38 in his sock and play the game they don't care they don't know yeah he could have a sitting on the bench waiting for him in his spot hold on i'm gonna put this here save my seat cool and he's got a gun and a pillow case duct tape duct tape to the chair leg he's got a duct tape to his jersey in the back like Die Hard, like Bruce Willis. So they said, this is a good quote from the coach here, I think everyone forgets since he's been in the league so long that he's 26 years old.
Starting point is 01:42:18 We're not talking about an old guy. I'm happy for him. I think that's good. He's still a baby is the thing. You know what I mean? He's been in the league a long time, but he's still a child. And there's so much that can happen for him. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:42:31 He could have a lot going here. So that year he played 60 games for the Suns. Only started one. He was a backup, but that's okay. 14.9 minutes a game. 6.1 points. 2.3 assists. But they kind of had him doing a bunch of different things
Starting point is 01:42:45 1.5 million dollars is what he gets though not bad he he says that he absolutely expects to return to phoenix next year and be there a long time he said phoenix has been a great place for me it's just been wonderful he said i got an opportunity of a lifetime this season i improved a lot on being consistent i I'm really excited for myself. Which I love that line. Very excited for me. He said, if I could change one thing in my whole career, I would take that sneaker deal back.
Starting point is 01:43:15 He said, it put you in some kind of comfort. He said he thought that, he thought the sneaker deal made guys mad at him. It made him too comfortable. He thought that was just the crux of everything was this fucking sneaker deal i don't know why he keeps blaming the sneaker deal god damn it adidas stop so 2012 2013 february 21st 2013 traded by the suns yeah to the toronto raptors um for so he's traded to the raptors and uh that year just not a great year for at all he's like averages like five points a game that year does make 1,567,500 though so the only thing that's
Starting point is 01:43:56 consistent he's making uh up over a million dollars a year every goddamn year so 2013 2014 Every goddamn year. So 2013, 2014, he signs a one-year deal with China. Not the whole country, but a team in China. Just the whole he's going to play for China. With the Tianjin Ronggang of the Chinese Basketball Association. NBA's over for him. Well, not quite.
Starting point is 01:44:26 At least for now. But, yeah, he plays there uh for let's see that team in 2013 14 36 minutes a game he plays 25.3 points a game dominating so he can still play it's just i feel like i could score 15 points a game in china maybe i mean because stefan marbury was dominating over there, too. But they're also amazing players. We're not. So I'm not sure about that. So he plays over there. Then July 15, 2014, he signs a contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Starting point is 01:45:00 Oh. They see his 25 points a game in China, and they're interested. We'll take it. We'll take it. We'll take it. They're 45-37 that year, so not bad. He plays in 16 games for the Thunder, averages 8.4 points, 2.8 assists. That's great. That's terrific.
Starting point is 01:45:16 He's there with KD and fucking Westbrook. He's in the midst of a good run. He's doing great, except it only lasts until Thanksgiving because November 26th, 2014, he's waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder after only 16 games. One of his people said, I think it's his business guy,
Starting point is 01:45:36 said that really hurt him. He was playing really well and excited about being on a playoff team. That was the most down I've ever seen him. Oh, I'm sure. He made $915,243 that year. And now he's talking about, should I retire? What do I do?
Starting point is 01:45:52 There's an article that says, quote, he loved spending time with his wife and kids, swimming with them in the backyard pool of his Orlando mansion, cooking them pork chops and taking them shopping at local malls. He'd also started a fashion company. 99 moves.
Starting point is 01:46:07 Oh, no. It's always a bad sign here. But he could never escape the game's gravitational pull. That's a Jay-Z reference. That's his basketball reference. And look at that. Bought an Orlando mansion. Never played for the Magic Ones.
Starting point is 01:46:21 Never played down there at all. What the fuck did he make that choice for? Florida's cheap, especially then. It was just cheap. It's much cheaper than getting a mansion in Westchester. It would cost you a lot more. What a fascinating choice. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:46:33 So he said, though, he's talking about trying to get back in the NBA. One of his friends here who grew up with him, he's a trainer now at this point, a professional trainer, and Telfer said he's going to give it one more shot at the NBA, and he wants to know if his friend would be open to working with him he's a trainer now at this point a professional trainer and tell fair said he's going to give it one more shot at the nba and he wants to know if his friend would be open to working with him and his friend said of course just let me know and then he never heard from him again so never heard from sebastian or the trainer never heard from sebastian again yeah sebastian said will you help me and he said sure i will and he said awesome and, I will. And he said, awesome. And then never. I'll give you a call later. So 99 moves all over his Instagram page.
Starting point is 01:47:08 Everything's hashtag 99 moves. Everything. One of his friends here says the company is, quote, Sebastian's thing now. It's big. That's what he says. One of his brothers here, Jamel Thomas, the one who was in the NBA. He says that's what Sebastian's doing now. He's got this clothing company. It's going to be big. And then at the time of the interview,
Starting point is 01:47:31 though, the Telfair hasn't linked anything to the website in two years. Nothing has been on there in two years. The interview requests sent to the contact section were not answered. The business has no phone number, no Twitter handle, no Instagram page. Do a Google search, and the first result that you find isn't him, or isn't the fashion brand, but it's a video of Telfair from October 2014 produced by a YouTube account with him saying that Sebastian wearing a white T-shirt with a 99 Moves logo on it, explaining the origin and his business goals of his new venture. Quote, 99 Moves is my company for financial education and marketing.
Starting point is 01:48:17 At 99 Moves, our main focus is to get athletes involved in their finances. Don't be scared about it. He doesn't mention fashion at all. Meanwhile, him and everybody else were talking about this fucking 99 Moves fashion company, but it's not. Now he's talking about financial planning like it's the other guy who scammed those athletes. Right. That feels like a scam.
Starting point is 01:48:38 Yeah. Yeah. That's what it was. That was the whole. Yeah. That's crazy. So that request for comment sent to the email address for them was answered by another guy. This guy told Bleacher Report he was working on a story on Sebastian Telfair, and then that didn't end up being anything here.
Starting point is 01:48:58 So there's his wife, who won't respond to anything either. His family, teammates teammates all these no one will respond to anything about him like when asked by reporters for interviews what's going on with him what's going on see this is the pinnacle this is the pinnacle being reclusive can't find him there's a mystery yeah this is good but nobody wants him either that's the other thing they're they're they're trying to find him to go what the fuck fuck happened to you, dude? What's wrong with you? He's not hiding, like, working on the next big thing. We're doing welfare checks. This isn't.
Starting point is 01:49:27 Yeah. He's not in the lab with a pen and a pad, as Dr. Dre would say. He's fucking around is what he's doing. He's got a different thing here. It's totally different. So he goes back to China for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. That's what he plays for here. Signed with them for the rest of the 2014-15 season.
Starting point is 01:49:49 He 27.8 minutes a game, 20 points a game for him. So he's doing over there. Signs with the Fujian Sturgeons for the next season. And he only plays in two games for them, so who cares? That doesn't matter. So it's for 2016-17 and um maybe the problem is what happens on june 11 2017 3 a.m jimmy oh god always good things happen all right it's at 3 a.m well matchbox 20 wrote a great song about it yeah well he's not lonely though he's driving with his friend okay so he's not lonely, though. He's driving with his friend. Okay. So he's not lonely at all.
Starting point is 01:50:26 He's got his friend here. They're driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck. Hell yeah. Okay. They have no headlights on, parked illegally on a concrete median, dividing the eastbound and westbound paths of Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue. So you can't do that. You can't pull up on the center fucking median, turn your headlights out and hang out there there's not a place you can do that if you
Starting point is 01:50:49 live in new york you understand how ridiculous that is where if a cop passes you you're definitely getting fucked with for that that's not a thing you're gonna ask you some questions no especially at 3 a.m what are you doing in there nobody they're gonna ask you are you broken down then get the fuck out of there they're gonna say get the fuck out of the car let's talk let's talk and go it's us so they're they're parked illegally on there uh they see two guys sitting in the front seat so the cop starts to approach them to you know say what's up what the fuck you're doing the cops as the cop oh shit the cops be cool fool he ain't gonna roll up. But he does roll up. Yeah. And Sebastian, they pull away with no headlights on.
Starting point is 01:51:28 Yeah, of course they do. Yeah, just drive, man, drive. With no headlights on. So they're immediately pulled over for why were you parked there? Why aren't you driving with headlights? A bunch of different reasons. They pull him over. When they pull him over, there is in plain sight a blunt burning.
Starting point is 01:51:44 Yeah. There are smoke clouds coming out of the car it's not even out it's a literal burning at that current moment blunt which in new york at that time wasn't legal recreationally either so bad not great to have a burning blunt going right in the center console there so um the cop said all right get out of the car take that burning blunt with you please uh that sort of thing uh popped open the trunk center console the truck center console where he found two two big ziploc bags with a bunch of weed in them which whatever i don't give a fuck about that but there's also a loaded 45 pistol in there as well um it's loaded and then next to it's an additional magazine with another
Starting point is 01:52:26 nine in it too of course he's got to keep extra clips for extra shit is what he's got so okay 45 caliber and two big bags of weed jesus you're in so much trouble sebastian having problems here uh then the cop made his way to the back of the truck to inspect the flatbed of it. So there, packed away, they found inside, they had a suitcase in there. Inside a couple of different bags and suitcases, they found a couple more things. Two more semi-automatic pistols, one semi-automatic assault rifle, 296 bullets stuffed into seven ammo boxes and two magazines oh my god oh that's right a bulletproof vest too oh dear lord what do you have all this for that's like we're gonna go rob a bank and have a shootout with the SWAT team
Starting point is 01:53:20 that's what that says to me um not that he's he's doing that, but that's what it looks like. It sure doesn't look good. Yeah. It doesn't look good. So, yeah, they found, let's see, the gun collection. It was a SIG MPX pistol, a Ruger LC9S, and a Springfield Armory XD9 Mod 2 pistol. I have that exact BB gun that we shoot off in my backyard. It's fun.
Starting point is 01:53:42 Nice one for BBs, let me tell you. It's not bad it's pretty good so they um the other guy in the car was uh jammy thomas who is 18 years old and i think this is his nephew or is his cousin i'm sorry um yeah some is related to him in some way i believe it's his cousin here so um they were both cuffed placed under arrest weapons and weed charges as obviously here so some of the magazines too the ones they found in the back were extended magazines too they were like a 30 round mags 30 round mags and shit like that all stuffed up and which are not legal in new york at all i'm sure definitely not legal to drive around with at three o'clock in the morning with your bulletproof vest.
Starting point is 01:54:28 They're headed to a war and getting stoned before so. It's what it looks like. I'm not saying it's what it is, but he was in New York at the time for what was supposed to have only been a matter of hours, being in between a move of residence and for the opening of basketball courts at Coney Island Projects where he was raised. So one of the weapons they described, Personal Defense World magazine described it as an AR-style pistol in 9mm. That's the SIG. It's a badass weapon. Okay, there you go. To give you an idea of what it is here. Telfair, who was driving, of course, was charged with unlawful possession of a ballistic vest,
Starting point is 01:55:03 unlawful possession of a ballistic vest, unlawful possession of an ammunition magazine, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, aggravated license, unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle, and a motor vehicle equipment violation. He's in jail. He's feeling bad about himself. He's feeling terrible.
Starting point is 01:55:18 I mean, good God. He's so bad he has a hard time eating, sleeping. He gets out of jail. He goes home. He feels bad. It's in the paper. a hard time eating, sleeping. He gets out of jail. He goes home. He feels bad. It's in the paper. Everybody's making fun of him. He just needs something.
Starting point is 01:55:30 He feels awful about himself. And he just wishes that only somebody could comfort him. And then there's a knock at the door. He goes, I wonder who this is. He opens the door. It's Vinny Pazienza's ma standing there. She wants to help him out a little bit and she says how is it you come to arrive here what's wrong sebastian sebastian i made you i made nice
Starting point is 01:56:02 veal cutlets i put it it's in sauce now, so you want to heat it up. Otherwise, it's going to get soggy. So eat it now. Sebastian, what are you doing? What are you doing over here? Why do you have guns at 3 o'clock in the morning? I don't understand it. Why aren't you home?
Starting point is 01:56:15 You should find yourself a nice lady. Maybe you could get a wife. What happened? You are married. What's wrong with you? Why are you out there? Why are you out with him? I've seen your young cousin.
Starting point is 01:56:23 I'll tell you what. I've been talking to his mother since she was a little girl. She's no goddamn good. I'm going to tell you that right now. She's no goddamn good. One time I saw her stick an entire Barbie up her vagina. I swear to God, she was seven years old. I said, right there and then, this girl, I don't trust her.
Starting point is 01:56:36 I don't trust her. So then she has this kid. Of course, he's going to bring all these weapons. I know it wasn't you, my beautiful Sebastian. It's OK. Here. Oh, I made some nice ziti for you, too. Here, Sebastian.
Starting point is 01:56:53 Eat it. Here you go sebastian and boom in a in a in a poof of ziti and marinara sauce her head explodes and unreasonable support unreasonable support sebastian's exhausted but now he's he's got good food in him anyway so he's feeling good about himself he loves the street he's got good food in him anyway, so he's feeling good about himself. He loves the street. The stupid shit with these guns. This gets dumber. The whole rest of this episode is all crazy, stupid crimes. He's going to do more. It's asinine. So in court here, the lawyers claim that Telfair was Thomas's uncle and that he had legally purchased the weapons in Florida where he's a resident.
Starting point is 01:57:21 that Telfair was Thomas' uncle and that he had legally purchased the weapons in Florida where he's a resident. They said that his lawyer described him as, quote, a perfect citizen with no participation in criminal activities. Except for, wait, Thomas or Telfair? No, no, Telfair. A perfect citizen.
Starting point is 01:57:38 He had fabulous shots. Allegedly. That never, we don't know. He allegedly had Skyler shots. skylar got buck bucked after this shit and we're gonna talk about it he shot he shot mike mike in his hind parts for christ's sake let's not say perfect you can say he's a good guy fine had some bumps but perfect citizen is a little but the stretch i don't know who i describe as a perfect citizen he's driving around with an arsenal at 3 a.m smoking weed in a vest so he's not a good guy he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted yeah everything here he uh yeah he showed up every his wife and kids were in
Starting point is 01:58:20 the courtroom now he has friends here that say that um here's one uh david alexander miami-based trainer who telfer was working out with he declined comment um even after because they they were trying to get friends to talk about him and even when they said please well even the this is reporters though there are reporters said we're not just looking for negative stories. If you have something positive to say about Sebastian, you can tell us that. And he said no comments on anything. I won't talk about him. Can't do it.
Starting point is 01:58:54 So did a longtime friend of his regime. Bubba Parker said the same thing. One of his former Lincoln High School teammates agreed to an interview only to back out later on um finally reached the guy on facebook and he responded that his own family didn't think it was a good idea for him to be interviewed he said quote when it comes to bassy things are very sensitive we don't we don't say his name wow um that's fucking wild um yeah that's interesting his brother here jamel thomas said tiny understands the media the media can twist up your words and that can lead people uh reading it the wrong way you can say something positive about sebastian but words can be twisted and then these guys still live and
Starting point is 01:59:36 hang out in coney island you don't want people to look at you and say this guy was saying this or that about sebastian on coney island so you just don't want to be like, he was talking shit about Sebastian walking around the neighborhood here. He then segues into all the great things his little brother did throughout the years. Said all the ways he's helped the Coney Island community, all the times he's flown his family down to his Orlando home. He said he still thinks Telfair is one of the best basketball players in the world, but the coaches never let him play his way. He said he's a scorer, not a distributor,
Starting point is 02:00:08 but when you're that young, it was just hard for him to speak up. He said, I don't think the problem was ever his game. I think it was other stuff, people around him telling him what to do, what he shouldn't do. You know, when you're that young with that much money, it's hard. Well, yeah. He said maybe he should have pushed more. Maybe he should have tried more maybe he should have
Starting point is 02:00:25 tried harder to take a lead role in his younger brother's life it's not that he isn't proud of him or that he no longer loves him he says but he thought of sebastian spending 15 and a half years behind or 15 years behind bar behind bars and he said it's just too much so uh but the lawyer says the legality of the search of the vehicle is very challengeable. Okay. Which is difficult because you had a burning blunt in the fucking thing. So that. Probable cause is fuck.
Starting point is 02:00:53 Well, he didn't even have to look in the window. He could stand there and see smoke rising from a thing. Go. What's on fire? Oh, a burning blunt. I smell weed. Get out of the car. And then you're being searched. That's it.
Starting point is 02:01:01 That's how that works. I hate searches and all that shit. So I'm a very anti-search guy. If I have a burning blunt going as the cop's talking to me, I expect that I'm going to be taken out of the car and searched. I expect it. In a vehicle driving with no headlights that took off from the middle of the road
Starting point is 02:01:18 at three in the morning. It all looks shitty. When those lights come on behind you, you go, yep that's i knew that was happening you know it's going on boy did i make mistakes no shit um his uh friend says quote i'm real worried we all are i don't want nothing to happen to him um he's asked about the guns and drugs and the guy wouldn't say anything they said they've never seen him do anything about drugs they've never seen him smoke or snort any substance.
Starting point is 02:01:46 His friend says, I've never even seen him drink. So they ask, what about the guns? And his friend says, it's a hobby, like collecting watches. How many times has a watch accidentally murdered a child? Well, also, how many times have you been arrested for having a loaded watch in your car that you knew wasn't licensed in that state that's my problem with it the rest of the shit you can debate on another show but this is i don't know many watch laws in this country state to state you don't have to know your local state watch laws usually to figure shit out
Starting point is 02:02:19 he said telfer has a license and that the weapons are kept locked up in a safe. Not that night. And he said, and anyway, the Constitution grants us the right to bear arms, doesn't it? Yes. Don't do that. Not in your car at 3 o'clock in the morning in the city of New York. You can go down to Florida and drive around with them, I'm sure, but that's not where you are. So that's the thing.
Starting point is 02:02:40 There's choices that you make. The right to bear them. Then he points out that, remember when he got robbed robbed he said he thinks he started carrying guns after that that's when the gun started it was the robbery that's all he said that uh but he said he doesn't know um he said he's not sure how the guns got all the way to new york he said hey it's not my job to play detective i'm just lending support i don't know what the hell you're thinking about here he said he and his wife were going through some marital problems. Say you and your wife are going through it.
Starting point is 02:03:07 You throw a whole bunch of stuff in your car and leave. Just the guns? He didn't have all of his other stuff inside of his... That wasn't what it was. He had a fucking suitcase and a shitload of guns and a bulletproof vest in it. That was what it had in it. That's a lot. Tons of bullets and shit.
Starting point is 02:03:24 Doesn't look good. All that kind of stuff. No. Telfair and his wife, Samantha, have been going through some problems and all that sort of thing. And, yeah, so Samantha, they were going through problems, but she immediately got on a flight, stood by his side in court, as we said, brought the kids there and all that. Now, his attorney, Edward Hayes, who's the silverest man ever perfect citizen sebastian is this guy is silver holy shit he stressed that the guns are licensed in florida so while an out-of-state license suggests that telfer lawfully obtained the guns
Starting point is 02:03:59 although they do say it's not an effective defense for carrying those guns in New York City. As New York City criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor Jeremy Salen told SI.com, you could even have a permit to carry a gun elsewhere in the state of New York, but if you don't have the requisite license in the city, you will face a criminal charge. Everybody from New York knows that. The city has different laws. They also said the New York City's firearm laws are among the strictest in the U.S. And it's not a good place to be found with an unlicensed loaded gun. Basically, it's the worst place.
Starting point is 02:04:33 Bad stuff. He said, if you possess a loaded firearm outside your home or place of business without the requisite permit, you will spend a minimum of three and a half years in a cold cell somewhere upstate upon conviction. So they said, can he mount a legal defense? They said the guns appear to be his, but he didn't have the permit. So it's kind of a tough thing to fight. But Telfair may have some room.
Starting point is 02:04:56 One thing they said, he could argue that the officers lacked probable cause to search the car and may have vital violated his Fourth amendment rights for unlawful search and seizure. He might contend that the marijuana was not in plain view and there was no discernible smell of marijuana. They said it was currently on currently burning at the time. I don't know if you've ever smoked a blunt out there, but I, for years, that's all I smoked was blunts.
Starting point is 02:05:21 And when you light a fucking blunt, if you light it, take one hit and put it out, it will smell in that room for four days. It'll smell in a car for a while because there's the scent of cigar as well. Right. The cigar paper just really hangs. It's heavy. If it's currently on fire, you're definitely going to do that.
Starting point is 02:05:41 It's like a weed incense. Yeah. Going to do that. It's like a weed incense. Yeah. I think this is one of his attorneys said, it's not clear to me why the police searched the entire car as opposed to only the interior of the car where the marijuana was observed. They said Telfair's exact relationship to the car, which has Florida plates, has also not been made established and that the relationship could impact whether he possessed the guns at the time of the arrest. Perhaps he was driving someone else's car and someone else, unbeknownst to Telfair, placed the guns in the car, which is ridiculous because the guns belong to him.
Starting point is 02:06:13 So he took someone else's car who then secretly put Telfair's own guns in the car with him. A car that's not his. And then put them in the car. And then we're like, he doesn't know about it, but it's pretty cool. He'll be all right with it. Wow. That's wild. So January 2018, things aren't going well, as we see.
Starting point is 02:06:33 Downhill slide. Samantha gets a temporary restraining order against him after she claims that he showed up to her house on January 12, 2018, and basically banged on the door she wasn't home she received an alert on her phone it was like a ring doorbell or simply safe type of deal she said she uh told sebastian through the phone through the device that she wasn't home and she should leave so she claims at that point he became quote became irate and started punching the video doorbell at my house hitting the doorbell so he smashed the ring doorbell um then he went over and smashed her windshield in as well whoa for not being home um she says samantha says her aunt who was home then called to tell her that sebastian began banging on the garage door so the samantha the wife here
Starting point is 02:07:25 claims that when her aunt opened the door to tell sebastian to leave their 12 year old daughter began screaming daddy please stop to which samantha says that sebastian told the daughter quote you don't love me anyway and walked away oh my god what a night sebastian sebastian i just want to sit him down sebastian sebastian sebastian he's got to be drunk right he's got he's on something right you don't you don't just behave that way reckless unless he thinks she's out with some dude and that they're separated though too like they live together i getated or not, that still hurts. But, yeah, you can't break windshields and tell your kids they don't love you. That's crazy.
Starting point is 02:08:10 What the fuck are you doing? As a guy that has clearly an ego trip, everything's about him. Yeah, that's a good point, too. They said Samantha said Sebastian has become increasingly hostile, unstable, and volatile, has texted to her that he wants to die on numerous occasions and she believes he's suicidal. She says she said of Sebastian and their two kids, the children should not be exposed to his violence and rants about his suicidal tendencies. This is all in her filing for a restraining order. As part of it, Samantha included screenshots of text message conversations she had with him among the troubling phrases were quote i deserve death i'm not gonna see shit but death
Starting point is 02:08:52 i promise you i'll i'm a mate i promise you i'ma make the bigger splash before my death oh no so there's that on one occasion she claims that he broke into her home and took $1,300 from her. Then she says when she texted him about it, he texted back, robbed you again. So the order, basically, she's trying to get an order to get him to stay away for three years after this incident here. She wants a three year restraining order, which would be no phone calls, texts, emails,
Starting point is 02:09:29 none of that shit. He claims that, uh, she showed he, or she claims he showed up to the home, kick the front door, smash the windshield, all this type of shit.
Starting point is 02:09:37 Uh, the court granted a temporary restraining order. Um, and he must steer clear from her now. So what a mess I mean Jesus Christ and I feel bad for all the people around like his family who are like depending on him and they're like hey buddy like we're depending on you you can't fucking go off the deep end like that for Skyler for poor Skyler Samantha Skyler everybody with s in this. I feel bad for all these people, Jimmy, but not nearly as bad as I feel for Sebastian
Starting point is 02:10:08 Telfair. No way. Student at the University of California, Los Angeles. He's a UCLA student, Sebastian Telfair. Definitely not him. No, that much. He's not going to college because he's already received a master's degree in finance and finance in 2021.
Starting point is 02:10:24 It's not even his kid either not as definitely not his kid way too young for that and also sebastian telfair manager at personal loans advice in the greater sydney australia area holy shit didn't expect that one so that's different so So November 2018, he is being sued by American Express at this point for owing $43,051.69 in unpaid credit card debt to American Express. Not great here. He's also got a domestic violence charge hanging over his head from the last thing. He's got a restraining order that says he has to stay 100 yards away from his wife and kid oh and this gun charge with possible prison time hanging over oh no not great here so that's not even sorted out yet oh no april 2019 it's his trial he has to do a trial it's a two-week trial too holy shit two weeks um and it's amazing because the people he has to have he has his
Starting point is 02:11:27 wife he has his girlfriends testifying they're all in court at the same time and they fight with each other in court jimmy it's like it's like if jerry springer had a judge up there when like some sort of legal fucking uh jurisdiction over the entire area oh shit it's it's fucking amazing this on tv this would have been incorrect better than the anything else uh ray caruth or whatever from back casey anthony's wasn't near as jesse this is great no so his estranged wife samantha here testified that um about his weapons trial that before he was busted for all this he also stole her clothing and about $250,000
Starting point is 02:12:10 in jewelry and gave them to his mistress what? stole her shit and gave it to another woman this is Samantha Telfair she told the jury in the Brooklyn Supreme Court that months before he was arrested
Starting point is 02:12:26 she went home to find her bedroom drawers and closet cleaned out. Wow. She said she had already filed for divorce but they were staying in their house still in Orlando while leading separate lives. She said quote he calculated my time out of out the house
Starting point is 02:12:42 every day. She said that yeah she would do all this in addition to all that her belongings gone also three of their cars an aston martin a range rover and a ford f-150 which is the one that he got pulled over for so it's his truck his guns it's kind of hard to say someone put me in this with the guns she then went on to testify that she went to a storage facility where she and telfer had shared a unit and found that he had separate units under his name and that of another woman katarina scotto oh so sebastian gave katarina all my clothes and all my belongings she testified on the stand she had never heard the woman's name before, but she said she lied about being a family friend
Starting point is 02:13:26 to get the information. The units were locked, but an employee showed her a computer screen with the unit numbers, which also revealed an associated address in Orlando. So, Samantha said she assumed it was her husband's new apartment and went there. Turns out, it was the mistress's apartment.
Starting point is 02:13:43 It was her apartment and all three of her cars were in the garage by the way she is a great police officer she's amazing she investigated the whole thing then she used her keys to take her range rover back because it was outside so she hopped in and took off she said that then she and her aunt and mother staked out the storage unit waiting for her to show up. Okay. When this Katerina showed up to the storage unit, the mother and aunt called Samantha, told her to come down here. She said, when I came, she just drove off and she almost hit me with her car a chase ensued and then both women called the cops on each other
Starting point is 02:14:29 this is amazing this is fucking amazing so then that year uh in court a judge ordered telfair to return the property back to her that he stole from her she's she ended up getting uh she said she got her clothes and louis vuitton jewelry case filled to capacity so she got everything back um she said uh at when he was arrested she said that she was called and asked to quote bail my darling husband out of jail and she wouldn't she said we don't have a relationship this is my first time seeing sebastian in a year and a half other than him sending me degrading text messages we don't speak i love his wife his wife is awesome a lot of fun so then katarina scotto gets up on the stand
Starting point is 02:15:19 oh what does she say she's in the middle of explaining how her relationship with sebastian ran hot and cold but stopped her testimony to complain that some woman in the gallery was intimidating her she's mad about getting eye fucked from the gallery while she's up on stand here some lady she said quote to the judge quote there's this lady that keeps mouthing things to me and it's making me really uncomfortable. That woman, Patrisa Ciccone, was called into the hallway for questioning where she said she was just Telfair's friend. So she was upset. Another woman that fucks him. No, I'm just another woman that like carries shit for him and puts his guns in my car.
Starting point is 02:16:02 So they let her back in. She was allowed to stay, but she had to stop mouthing shit to the witness yeah now earlier in the day um they said that uh when samantha was on the hole on the witness stand there he sebastian repeatedly yawned loudly at the defense table they said that the uh the the athlete was so distracting that the judge even put his behavior on record. The defendant is turning to the audience and making facial expressions the jury can't see, the judge said before telling him to stop. That's fucking amazing. He's being a dick in court. This is not good for you, Sebastian. No, this is criminal court with prison hanging in the balance.
Starting point is 02:16:42 Oh, this is criminal court with prison hanging in the balance. So he settled down. But then the his friend Chacon there could be heard from across the courtroom chuckling as Samantha Telfair testified that she had seen her husband with multiple weapons, including gas operated submachine gun. Prosecutors said he had on him when he was arrested. Yeah. Meanwhile, that's a quote from there. Let's quote from there. Meanwhile, Scotto admitted that's the mistress admitted she helped coordinate shipping Telfair's cars, including the F-150, which he was arrested in from Florida to Brooklyn. She also said she rented storage units for him.
Starting point is 02:17:29 She said that she saw Telfair with a gun on multiple occasions and giggled as she recalled that he would call firearms, quote, biscuits, which is a very mid 90s New York term. It is. That's very 1995 new york that's biscuit yeah exactly so this is fucking amazing um anyway she also confessed the ex-girlfriend to taking a couple of his framed basketball jerseys from his unit storage unit before she allowed the company to auction his other memorabilia off she said uh they said did you ever sell any of that property yourself and she said why it isn't worth anything wow later on nine points a game at best it's not much i'll tell you what the defense attorney examined the nature of their relationship and the court heard how weeks into it, Scotto got Telfair's address through a real estate agent friend and showed up at his home unannounced. Oh,
Starting point is 02:18:10 you can't tell this started. Uh, she also admitted to keeping signed basketball jerseys that he had left in the storage unit, but he, she claims that he gave her permission to take them. And she did so quote out of concern for his children who might someday want the souvenirs.
Starting point is 02:18:25 So the defense attorney said, you weren't concerned for his children when you showed up at his house. And she said, I was 21 or 22 years old. I was an idiot. I was wrong. And I apologized. This is a fucking disaster. This is a disaster. I love it.
Starting point is 02:18:41 It's hilarious. Oh, it's hilarious. But if you're Sebastian, you know, this is not going well. This whole case looks terrible for you. So he is found guilty of felonious weapons possession. Oh, boy. But he dodges the sentencing for a minute as his lawyer claims there's new evidence that exonerates him completely. So hold off on sentencing.
Starting point is 02:19:03 Let him stay out on bail. He introduces new enhanced video of this of this arrest to prove the cop perjured himself. So that's what he says. The lawyer says the idea is that this goes to the credibility of the officer, but also the fact that he committed perjury in the grand jury pretrial and during the trial. He says he plans to file a motion to vacate the conviction. And we're going to get to the bottom of this bad boy here. It's all good. The judge said that they will rule on the whole thing, but warned that, quote, Mr. Telfair should be prepared to be sentenced if that decision isn't in his favor. So that's what he says. the uh um yeah so that's
Starting point is 02:19:48 how that goes they find nothing about it the nypd said the brooklyn district attorney's office and the internal affairs bureau concluded that the arrest was justified everything was done by the book august 2019 is sentencing oh boy buckle. This is one of the most confusing, messed up statements I've ever heard that he makes. Oh boy. He has a meltdown in court. He cries, he yells. He knows he's in trouble. He cries and yells when addressing the judge.
Starting point is 02:20:21 He yells, he cries, he's erratic, you don't know what the fuck he's talking about. the judge he yells he cries he's erratic you don't know what the fuck he's talking about he says and i quote please don't take me from society right now i'm 34 i can go play in china for six years and take care of my family i'm waiting for my daughter right now to get her period he said yeah he said that in court. I got a lot going on. I got a job. I got this. I got that.
Starting point is 02:20:49 My daughter, any minute now. Hey, baby, you feeling it? It's coming. She said it's coming. I got to be out for that. What the fuck difference does that make? I'm not waiting on that. You know, I'm waiting for my daughter right now to get her period.
Starting point is 02:21:06 I don't even know what that means. Okay. This is a whole paragraph. Quote, I'm 34. This is all connected, by the way. These aren't different statements pushed together. This is in a row. Here it goes. I am 34.
Starting point is 02:21:17 I can go play in China for six years and take care of my family. I'm waiting for my daughter right now to get her period. Real mental illness because i wasn't around she hasn't even gotten her period yet because he left she's holding her body retaining eggs because yeah they're all built up there's eggs coming out her mouth your honor they're just they're all built up right now um eggs coming out of her mouth, Your Honor. They're all built up right now. I think the real mental health is yours, sir. Then he started crying and shouting.
Starting point is 02:21:55 Okay. None of this makes sense here. Quote, Sebastian Telfair is going to jail for a victimless crime. Put a gun in his hand and fight for us, N-word. I go to the gun store. I got American Express. Yeah, that's it. That's the statement. That sounds like fucking Tracy Morgan on 30 Rock, he just said.
Starting point is 02:22:19 I go to the gun store. I got American Express. He's a SoundCloud rapper, James. None of this makes sense. He just threw sense together that don't make any sense for no reason then he says quote god on the throne that's what my mother says god still sits on the throne he used his name in the third person while addressing a judge sebastian telfair is going to jail for a victim of this crime this is not how you can conduct yourself i don't care if this is the most unjustified thing in the world which honestly he probably wasn't going to shoot anybody whatever i don't really fucking care but this isn't the way you act you you can't show some
Starting point is 02:23:00 dignity bro yeah but you can't have drugs and weapons that close together no that's just that's just no just they sentenced john gatti to fucking life and he smirked this there wasn't any of this shit this is crazy little god he's gonna have her period any day now i'm waiting for little victoria to have her period or whatever fucking kids names were so i think victoria's is that his wife that's his wife. I'm sure they named the kid after her, too. I think he's got sons. Yeah, he's got all douchey sons.
Starting point is 02:23:29 I think he's got, yeah, I don't remember. So he's got a daughter, I think, though. Does he? I'm pretty sure, yeah. He's got a bunch of kids and all that. Yeah, that's the thing. So he is sentenced to, you, sir, may fuck off three and a half years in prison. That's fine.
Starting point is 02:23:47 That's the minimum, by the way. It was three and a half to in prison that's fine that's the minimum by the way it was three and a half to 15 is a sensing range for that a judge clearly was like he's losing his mind i can't get him in there that long we don't need him to be our problem we're gonna go three and a half on this he'll be out in about a year and we're gonna get this going now his legal team appeals the sentence and he is allowed to stay out to stay out of prison on bail while the sentence is being appealed. He's got an ankle monitor. He's got a whole bunch of shit here. Ankle monitor, he's not allowed. I believe he has to be confined to the house from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. while also wearing the monitor.
Starting point is 02:24:20 House arrest is what he's got, basically. Does this count to time served if they uphold the thing? Not sure about that one not sure it doesn't he could get that though right oh i'm sure you could argue for it and probably isn't with his lawyers they're asking for anything so what's he up to at this point while he's doing this he's still appealing while he's appealing his estranged wife says is claiming that he's trying to liquidate all of his assets before he checks into jail because once he checks into jail. Because once he gets into jail, that's when the divorce is going through and the court can divide his shit up in a divorce. So she's saying he's trying to liquidate everything now.
Starting point is 02:24:54 It's not smart. That's fraudulent. It's fraudulent. Yeah. According to court documents, Samantha is seeking an order against Sebastian to stop him from emptying the bank accounts. She claims Sebastian has been, quote, slowly liquidating our community property assets. That's called buying shit while not having a job is what that's called, too. Probably he's not working. So Samantha claims after she filed for divorce, she began to search for all their accounts. She said, to my surprise, there was
Starting point is 02:25:20 many accounts that she was unaware of, if not all accumulating value during the course of our marriage. She says they did not have a prenuptial agreement and everything should be community property. One account used to have five hundred twenty thousand dollars in it. Now it's at zero. She also claims he took one hundred ninety seven thousand dollars out from another account without her knowledge. She says she has strong reason to believe that he will continue to liquidate as much as he can prior to having to turn himself in she says quote i'm fearful that if i'm not able to preserve the remaining community property funds there will not be proper division of assets for myself and our children when our dissolution of
Starting point is 02:25:58 marriage is nearing completion uh the judge denies the request, saying that it's unnecessary because she already served him with divorce papers and family standard restraining orders are in effect, which prohibit the type of behavior she's alleging. So he's like, you're asking me to double down on that. If he did do that, that's going to be a separate thing you're going to sue him for. But that's not part of that's already put in the order. So that makes sense. So that's why I do it. That's like having a drug free school zone. Well, drugs are illegal all in the order. So that makes sense. So that's like having a drug-free school zone. Well, drugs are illegal all over the place.
Starting point is 02:26:28 Exactly, yeah. You just made it extra. It's double illegal there, though. Okay, great. I don't understand that. So his sister now, okay, she's a character. After the guilty verdict, Octavia Telfair, his sister, began making threatening phone calls to his to samantha
Starting point is 02:26:47 octavia okay she called uh that she samantha was called with 50 threatening phone calls from a number that appeared as no caller id um sebastian after he was convicted octavia repeatedly called samantha on october 24 2019 and said she's quote gonna die and quote going to live with a rearranged face okay um it gets worse i'm gonna rearrange your face motherfucker that sounds really like childlike i'll rearrange your face well i'll do that is her is her ass also grass yeah your ass is gonna be grass buddy so she also said that she would quote kill all of y'all bitches um that's one referring to her and her mother aunt and sister then she threatened their sebastian and samantha's. Don't do that.
Starting point is 02:27:45 Quote, fuck your son. We don't give a fuck about none of them, bitch. Octavia is ghetto. It gets worse. Fuck your son. We don't give a fuck about none of them, bitch. Fuck your kids, bitch. They can die too.
Starting point is 02:28:01 Die, kids, die. Oh my, no. Die, kids, die is extra. That's extra, I think. You're going too far. The rest of it's more about the beef between us and I'm just throwing them in to piss you off. Die, kids, die, that's aggressive, I think. That's a little much there.
Starting point is 02:28:17 Yeah. Then when she got arrested for it, Octavia, she admitted it. First of all, she tried to run and avoid capture. They had to track her down. Then she admitted it saying, quote, I to run and avoid capture they had to track her down then she admitted it saying quote i got into it with that heifer on the phone octavia octavia pleads guilty to making threats here and uh they asked to the judge to give her a substantial sentence including a period of incarceration she says quote i know the things i said to my sister-in-law was wrong and shameful and i am very embarrassed by
Starting point is 02:28:51 my actions i spoke out of pain and fear fear of for my brother to be sent to a horrible place knowing that he's been such a good person to his family over the years um the judge says you ma'am may fuck off two years of probation and 100 hours community service that puts her in the system though we'll keep track of you for a little yeah don't do that shit anymore clearly reckless well she's been in the system it turns out she's been arrested nine other times since 2006 so she's a problem she's an issue she's a fucking issue so september 2019 telfer finally turns himself in to start serving his sentence his mental health is being assessed before he's transferred into the the facility um it says as of right now this was in 2009 he was only eligible for parole in 2022 which means he has to serve at least two full years before being freed. Oh, boy. So I don't know if he's in or out.
Starting point is 02:29:45 I think he might have got out by now. But October 7th, 2021, he's indicted for something else. Oh, no, Sebastian. This is him and 17 other NBA players are indicted for a scam they've been running. Oh, I heard about this. This is so bad. The arrests were carried out by FBI agents across the country following the three-year scheme they've been running here. They submitted claims for about $4 million worth of medical and dental appointments that never happened and received $2.5 million in reimbursements.
Starting point is 02:30:20 Wow. So it's just a little insurance fraud with the NBA players, whatever their insurance pension is. So the one guy, Terrence Williams, he was former number 11 overall draft pick by the Nets in 2009. He was the ringleader. He started this and conducted it and recruited other people to join him. And he received at least $230,000 in kickback payments from 10 other players who were paying him for the hookup. Now, the charges were that all the players were charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, which can mean up to 20 years in prison, federal prison. This is not good.
Starting point is 02:30:58 Williams was charged also with aggravated identity theft, which carries a penalty of another two years. also with aggravated identity theft, which carries a penalty of another two years. The NBA's response to this is, quote, the benefit plan provided by the NBA and the National Basketball Association to our players are critically important to support their health and well-being throughout their playing careers and over the course of their lives, which make these allegations particularly disheartening. Here's the full list of the players involved. Sebastian Telfair antoine right charles watson darius miles reuben patterson uh it's basically the 2004 draft yeah it's a bunch
Starting point is 02:31:32 of people that you that didn't that didn't pan out well it's a bunch of people that are pretty sad off but they will talk about eddie robinson gregory smith big baby davis glenn davis did this too that's right jamario moon there's an asu guy i know terence williams alan anderson tony allen shannon brown william bynum melvin evie or ely i'm sorry chris douglas roberts tony roten and milt palacio 18 players earned a combined 343 million dollars in their careers these 18 people oh my god i think glenn davis had a big deal at one point it's an average of 15 million a piece but it's still it that's a lot of money that's a lot of fucking money i don't have 17 friends we're all together we've made 343 million
Starting point is 02:32:20 dollars at all like it definitely never would happen so um yeah they said that uh greg smith was a former power forward for the rockets and mavericks he appeared to be uh one day at a dental office in beverly hills he must have had a long day here invoices submitted on his sheet on his behalf showed that he received uh iv sedation and root canals and had crowns placed on eight of his teeth that one day brush your teeth motherfucker that's a lot of that's a lot of crowns uh but the invoices totaling forty seven thousand nine hundred dollars were fake there he actually uh was actually thousands of miles from california playing basketball in taiwan at the time so that added to the evidence. That's easy to check up on, man. You dickhead.
Starting point is 02:33:06 They said part of their evidence is Chinese box scores or Taiwanese box scores. They said that he's one of 18 players. Sebastian Telfair is another one here. He suggested, terrible, I feel bad for his dental problems here. He claims that he had received
Starting point is 02:33:24 root canals on 17 teeth in one year. Holy shit. Root canals. Obviously, that wasn't true. And he pleads not guilty. But, you know, he's still there. The U.S. attorney said the defendant's playbook involved fraud and deception. I like how they say playbook.
Starting point is 02:33:40 Yeah. Basketball. Their alleged scheme has been disturbed or disrupted and they will have to answer for their flagrant violations of the law flagrant violations yeah that's two at the line buddy that's a flagrant one more line and the ball and the ball and one bitch let's give a final word from sebastian here okay let's see what he has to say quote that's the problem with myself right away it's a problem with myself at the time i really didn't even take the time to think about that or or plan that out or foresee where i wanted my future to be my goal was to
Starting point is 02:34:19 play in the nba to get out of my projects and i knew what I had to do to do that. I knew I had to go to school and all that kind of stuff that I had. I got to that point, but I really didn't take the time to plan that out 10 years ago when I first got in the league. It wasn't something I was really thinking about at the age of 18. Of course, you wanted to be a good player, all star and all the fruit that comes from it. But I really didn't plan it out like that yeah no you didn't sir i should i should have payment planned and and plans are not his strong point worked all of these root canals out in time but instead i got them all done at once well that was just over his whole career that's his whole like looking back on how it all happened he really blew it can't get enough watch that documentary through the fire it's very very good stuff and uh tons of jerseys of him right he played for like eight teams so there's a lot of different jerseys a lot
Starting point is 02:35:08 of autographs including this i doubt it's real obviously we did that bonus episode but still uh some website here buying i don't even know what the fuck that says either way it's a section of floor that's autographed by him they have a ton of these. Oh, like basketball court. Like basketball court. It's not just like a Spanish tile with his name on it. It's not like a repossessed home. No, no, no. Just a section of the hardwood from the living room. It's an actual deal there.
Starting point is 02:35:35 Is it part of the garden? It's only $15. No, it's not part of the fucking garden. Oh, it's fake. It's just bullshit. Yeah, some piece of floorboard they had him sign and maybe had him sign. Who knows? Either way, that is Sebastian Telfair and a crazy story from start to finish.
Starting point is 02:35:53 I'll tell you. I can't believe it. You don't want to be famous when you're 12. Let's just say that. It never works out very well. No. The hype, they have to go so hard to hype you and say like the the most hyperbolic shit and then when you don't pan out like you look like shit not the person that wrote it you know what i mean that's
Starting point is 02:36:11 the bummers these guys have to live with that absolutely and they're the failure not this fucking asshole that hyped me up why chose him at 14 saying that he had what it takes it's crazy don't point at me asshole so um that's a guy i rooted for tell fair a lot it's hard it's sad to see how it's all went down and it's really spiraled and now it's like you know when water goes down a drain at first it's slow turning and then as it gets less and less it starts going real fast it's real fast that's what's going on with him it is plug that drain fast sebastian because he's still young. He's only 37 years old, for Christ's sake. Like, now he's 36 right now.
Starting point is 02:36:47 Like, he's got a lot of life. There's guys that are still playing in the NBA that are his age. Like, he's got a lot of life ahead of him. Just turn it around. He's a charismatic dude. The consequences are lifelong. Absolutely. If he keeps continuing on this path, it's never going to end.
Starting point is 02:37:01 And if it does end, it's going to end in a ditch and fucking in the project somewhere. This is not good. It's not going well. Well, if you like that story, tell us about it. Whatever app you're listening on, give us five stars. It helps out immensely. It helps drive us up the charts. So thank you to everybody who does that.
