What I mean by that video, we've all felt bad for him since then because it's like, oh, man, clearly there's bad stuff going on with him. But it's not in the context of his whole life also, which is like, oh, this is just the latest thing.
Starting point is 00:06:17 It's just recent. Yeah, and we'll talk all about it. There is a lot to feel bad for, but there's also you've got to go, Jesus Christ, Delonte, get your shit together and try. You you know what i mean like stop fucking off like this for christ's sake so you only get coddled when you're in the nba you're not in the nba exactly you're not i'm mark cuban still trying to help him and all this shit because uh he needs it we'll just put it that way so delante maurice west is his name here as we we get into this, he's born July 26, 1983. He's not even 40 yet.
Starting point is 00:06:48 The man's younger than me. As we record this right now, he is not 40 years old. And it seems like he should be like 65, right? For all the shit he's done. Holy shit. It's wild. I can't believe he's only 6'4", also. I didn't know he was that tall.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I figured he'd be like 6'1". I don't know why, but he seems taller to me. Does he? Yeah. He seems like a tiny little shit to me. He's my size, except he weighs like 10 pounds less, 15 pounds less. And I'll bet he weighs less than that now. Now, who the hell knows?
Starting point is 00:07:24 That's his you know listed playing weight so yeah now or he could be 40 pounds heavier by now yeah we don't know depending on the day who knows here so what he's eating we'll get into all of this though holy shit here he is uh he's from maryland he's born in dc grows up in maryland dc area so that that whole area of the maryland was the dmv they call it there dc maryland virginia okay that makes sense the area the dmv yeah so his parents are his mom's name is delphina and his dad's name is dimitri oh and yeah he is um his dad is i believe his dad is black and part native american and then there's white in there too so he's
Starting point is 00:08:07 interesting he's very mixed is what it is and so that's when you look at delante west you kind of go is he from the future or like ambiguous yeah is he yeah he's like a future like a future person or like a you know what i mean you're like it's weird he's got like red hair and you're like yeah what's going on with you? I don't, how many, you know, like your brain, I don't mean that like you would think, what the hell's wrong with you? But like your brain tries to classify things. It just does.
Starting point is 00:08:35 You see a dog and you go golden retriever or whatever the fuck. You see a person, a black guy, that's white guy. That's fucking, whether you want to or not, that's what your brain does. Pete Davidson's very similar. You go to him and you go now pete davidson you just go what's up with you fish lips that's all it is you're just a white guy who looks like you're fucking you know no this guy you go i don't know what is going on here kardashian challenge where you put that cut on your on your limbs i think that's what it was he's borrowing that from from them so from tiktok he has an older brother and a younger sister so he's a middle child delante
Starting point is 00:09:11 his now i don't know how to classify this i i'm going to count this as a junior here because his older brother's a junior so oh if he was born first delante would be a junior but he's not so you know there's the same name? No, no, no. His older brother is Dimitri, like his dad. Oh, okay. Got it. He's Delonte.
Starting point is 00:09:30 But if he was born first, Delonte would be Dimitri. Okay. So that's how it works. Yeah. So there's a junior in the family, which is a problem, whether he's a junior or not. Yeah. He just happened to be made a little bit later in the old sperm bank. That's it.
Starting point is 00:09:45 So it's Dimitri, Delonte, Danielle are the three kids. So all Ds. Oh, yeah. And he said he had a huge extended family growing up. A lot of cousins and aunts and uncles and that kind of shit. He referred to it as a village. There's tons of people here. Takes a village, sure.
Starting point is 00:10:01 He said he stayed with a lot of relatives growing up all over the place moved around a lot he said quote i lived off every exit and would rattle off they said in this article 11 he rattled off 11 different exits he lived off of with apartments and uh when he was a kid good he said i've lived in so many apartments with cousins uncles and aunts just making it which yeah that's that's a weird thing when you're a kid. Do you remember when I went over my list with you? Yeah. From like age fucking five to like 12.
Starting point is 00:10:31 It was like 14 places. It's so weird. That's a lot. Yeah, I put it together one day. I was like, holy shit, I lived in a lot of places. You still do it. It's weird. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:41 I get itchy, man. I was never used to living anywhere for a long time. So when I was a kid, that was like that. So now I get, Sarah has to stop me. We're like two years in a house and I'm like, yeah, we should get out of here. And she's like, we just got comfortable. Calm down. We own this now.
Starting point is 00:10:58 We're not doing this now. Yeah. We got bills and shit that come here. Mortgage. I don't want to redo this. I don't want to do this i don't do this all over again so i'm staying now though i have to i have to stay where i'm where i am now but it's it's a habit that you really start to you know start to you know you can't even help it
Starting point is 00:11:14 it's just what your brain does so he said he you know lived off there he called his family happy poor that's the word the way he described happy poor poor but not miserable poor you know poor but we think it's funny i guess so yeah there's a certain fatalism in baltimore in that area that yeah i just like it it's like they don't get mad if you if baltimore someone said this place is a shithole they're like yeah i had to live here you know what i mean like they're like very yeah like i know it is motherfucker yeah try living here your whole life that's right creating creating new ways to make fire so that you can cook things that's fun there's pride of survival here in a weird way whereas it doesn't exist in other places if you find some like you know fucking west virginia hill people they'll defend what they
Starting point is 00:12:00 how they live and where they live till the end this is what are you talking about yeah that's right nobody's had no one on the entire holler has had a job in 14 years and you know what god damn it that's how we live around here how amazing is this you know yeah they would get mad at you for noticing that they're shitting in a bucket outside rather than yeah improving surviving is not there's no not, there shouldn't be pride. There shouldn't have to be pride. Does that make sense? Yes. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:12:29 Yes. Yes. People are like, how are you doing? I'm surviving. Oh, that's great. Yes. No, it's not. I'm a survivor.

Starting point is 00:12:46 Make fun of yourself. Not survive. It's great. And that's the other thing. Do that. Yeah. So he said he moved around from school to school a lot, which I know also is difficult. He said that he was, he got picked on a lot in school here.
Starting point is 00:13:00 And my, my thing is I figured out how to be funny. That's how it worked for me. Hey, look at that if you bounce around from school to school you can make friends quick if you're funny you know it takes five minutes for people to figure out you're funny and then it's like oh he's okay how long did it take him to grow to six four because you can just do that too you can do that too but if you're like bigger if you're goofy though and not like yeah particularly threatening it doesn't really help
Starting point is 00:13:25 any yeah exactly that's the other thing now they can see your stupid your goofy head above everybody else's if you're like a if you're a goofy looking person not saying he isn't if you're a goofy looking person dookie was the tallest of the boys exactly you could see his head stick that's why he hunched over he's like don't look at me don't see see me. They're all going to pick on me. So he said that he got picked on a lot. He said, quote, I was real funny looking. He said he had big ears. He had a big mole on the back of his head, which I never saw because he got that removed when he made it to the NBA. As soon as he had the money to do that.
Starting point is 00:13:57 I didn't know that. And a birthmark on his lip that he's also had partially removed. But you can still see the whole thing here. He said light skin red hair people didn't know the fucking white kids made fun of him whatever black kids made fun of him he had no he was a man without a without a tribe really he felt like and he's red hair so nobody likes him so it's you know and you're a ginger right you're not black you're not white and you're also a ginger fuck off you're you're
Starting point is 00:14:25 screwed at that point if you're in this area you know what i mean there's only black and white around here for the most part you're a target for jokes for sure definitely that and kids will make funny for anything a big ears that you could be perfect otherwise but big ears you're big ears you're dumbo and you're this and you're that for the and he's only he's only two years younger than me so he i grew up in the exact same time that he, I know what words he was called. No shit. Oh,
Starting point is 00:14:49 absolutely. Yeah. He said, quote, I was made fun of a lot growing up, but I just knew the basketball court was the place where you couldn't make fun of me. You had to respect me.
Starting point is 00:14:58 And that's a good place. Yeah. You can kind of hide on in sports. And then if you play basketball, well, then people like you. That's the other thing. And then if you play basketball well, then people like you. That's the other thing. And they want you around.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Yeah, it's a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer situation. When you show value, then these assholes who you don't like will like you, which is really a weird paradox that human beings have. Okay, you don't like me for me, and then I show you value. Now you like me, but now I don't like you because you were a dick to me yeah so it's a real how do you figure that um he said that he always had more they said that he always had quote more jokes for me than you had so he learned to pick on himself okay and make fun himself, which is a good defense mechanism. He said, though, that people would say shit to him and he would take it in and take it to heart. He'd act like it didn't bother him and he'd make fun of himself, too, but then he'd go home and be upset about it.
Starting point is 00:15:56 He said he believed his real problem, this is later on he's talking, not when he was a child, but about kind of his whole life. But he said his real problem isn't the bipolar disorder that he'll be diagnosed with later on. No, it's just self-loathing. That's the problem, which is part of the bipolar. That's the depressive swing is the self-loathing. So really it's all kind of in one. He really does hate himself. He said it's not the burger.
Starting point is 00:16:23 It's the bun. You know what I mean? It's like, well, the burger it's the it's the bun you know what i mean it's like well the whole thing is together so you know what are you gonna do he said his parents got divorced when he was young mom worked multiple jobs she had a government job and she also bagged groceries at the supermarket and she was a receptionist somewhere at a hotel and you know all that kind of shit. He said that one of the hotels his mom worked at, visiting NBA teams sometimes stayed at when they came to play the Bulls. Nice one. Yeah, nice one.
Starting point is 00:16:55 So he said that he recalls throwing his ball at one team's bus to, quote, let them know I'm playing too. Fascinating. Fascinating. Fascinating way. Some kid. Yeah, look at that. They're like, fucking some asshole kid just threw a ball at the bus, man. That's all they said.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Why'd he do that? I don't know. Should we stop and ask? He said he's playing too? I guess we just keep going. No player on the team went, he's playing too. He's all right. No, not one guy said that.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Oh, he's playing too. That's what he's telling. Nobody said that. Not a guy. Not one of them. To a man. They No, not one guy said that. Oh, he's playing too. That's what he's telling. Nobody said that. Not a guy. Not one of them. To a man. They went, what the fuck is that little motherfucker doing? Did he shoot?
Starting point is 00:17:31 Was that a gunshot? Did a shot hit the bus? In D.C. too? He said he's playing too? What the fuck does that even mean? I wish I could figure that out. Not where we are, bud. Let him know I'm playing too.
Starting point is 00:17:44 All right. Great. Continue to play cheap. So he said when he was 12, he suffered a pretty good leg injury, which forced him to stop playing basketball for a while. Really? Yeah. And so then he really felt like he had no home or nowhere to go because then he couldn't do anything. The only place where he was happy was playing basketball where nobody could pick on him.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Or if they did, he could then block their shot and be like, well, take that, asshole. So he said this injury was really bad for him. He started skipping school after that because he said, if I can't play ball, then what the hell, why bother going to school? Yeah, I don't need to be at school. So that obviously made things worse. Now he's home and he's feeling depressed
Starting point is 00:18:25 because he can't play ball and now he's not going to school so it's a big snowball and he falls into a deep depression and even has multiple suicide attempts he says during his teenage years here wow yeah he had a hard time he really did um he was in and out of hospitals a couple times as a kid, as a teenager. This kid will make it to the NBA. 12, 13. Yeah. A leg-injured kid who's so mentally just having problems that he keeps having to be put in hospitals over it. And, yeah, you don't expect this is going to be an NBA player later on. Good for you, Delonte.
Starting point is 00:19:06 on but good for you delante oh yeah i mean it's type of thing where if you can if he can if he takes his fucking medication and doesn't do any other drugs it's i think he can get on a path here but you just gotta focus yeah we'll get into all that here that's difficult though i mean he's got obviously an imbalance so his mom felt like delante maybe if he moved in with his father in rural virginia yeah that maybe that would help him. You know what I mean? That's the place. That's the place. Maybe if we just put him on a farm where even if he's screaming, no one can hear him, then that's fine.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Oh, boy. It's the old if a tree falls in the woods. Does anyone, you know what I mean? It doesn't make a sound if no one's around. It's that sort of thing. If he loses his mind and does some weird shit out there and no one sees it is it really that weird did it really happen did it really happen so he said that's where he kind of first quote kind of spiraled downhill he said yeah because you can't be left alone with your own thoughts when their
Starting point is 00:20:00 thoughts are fucking terrible that's not the answer at all. There's obviously more stuff here. She didn't work out. Delonte's father, he said, the mother and Delonte both said that his father really didn't give one shit about his kids' problems here. Didn't care about Delonte at all, or his problems anyway. So his father couldn't handle him, or his mother couldn't handle him. His father doesn't give a shit. You know, he doesn't know what to do here.
Starting point is 00:20:26 So he ends up, starts hanging out with some dudes from his new school where he went to live with his dad and he called them bad influences. They were, I bet. Yeah. Some bad kids. So he said that that helped lead him to a,
Starting point is 00:20:41 both prescription pill and alcohol addiction as a teenager. What? lead him to a both prescription pill and alcohol addiction as a teenager what this guy will somehow make it to have this turn into an nba career this is the it's impressive beginning yeah this is the beginning of a documentary where you watch the person spiral down until they're either giving blow jobs or getting just to get their three dollars. Yeah, for $3. To get a taco. They're looking down at the top of a bald man's head going, get a Best Al. Have we done a bonus on Dope Sick Love? We had two of them. I don't know if we did or not.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Did we? We had two of them, right? We've talked about it so much it feels like we have, but if we haven't, we definitely need to kind of collate all that into one. We've done so many. We've talked so much about it. We could just do a performance of it, honestly, by now, the two of us. Sebastian!
Starting point is 00:21:32 We could do a two-man show of Dope Sick Love. That would be hilarious. A gut needle in a Target bathroom. Oh, that would be so good. I took my daughter to Target, and we used the self-checkout line. There was a receipt sitting there. I grabbed the receipt and handed it to my daughter. I said, go get all that shit off the shelves, and we'll go return it.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Come on, Sebastian. Did you call her Sebastian? She goes, what? And I was like, that's how Dove ends. I'm like, never mind, Faye. She has never had to even think about that. So, yeah, that's's good that's probably good yeah so yeah you wouldn't think this doesn't sound like it sounds like the only way that this would lead
Starting point is 00:22:12 to an nba career is if this guy was like seven foot one and had you know athleticism because six four there's a lot of six four dudes that oh god every team has three of them that's not trust me if it was i would have really pursued it, but it's not. If I was 6'8", you wouldn't have been able to stop me from basketball. But this is different. So he said that he began taking tons of pills, the way he put it, with names he couldn't pronounce. Starting point is 00:22:43 Sure, they're very long names. Yeah, with, you know, different... Benzo and Oxy and Hydro. I don't know. I'm sure there are all kinds of them. Codone and this and that. Yeah, this isn't good. He said he started cutting himself at this point, too.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Oh, my God. Yeah. This does not sound like it's going to ever turn around, but somehow it does. How did he do it? I have no idea. It's wild uh he's in and out of children's hospitals and you know there's a lot of other kids with problems in there that he's meeting and he said that he the smallest things would set him off just send him into a you know tizzy here he couldn't afford a trip with his aau basketball team which does suck if you're on a
Starting point is 00:23:23 good basketball team and they're going traveling and you can't go because of money that really sucks a dick you know that's very limiting into as to what when people say like oh every doesn't matter if it's a rich kid or a poor kid everybody's got the same chance no they don't no shut the fuck up that's that's the stupidest fucking thing anybody could say in this guy be poor for a fucking day and and you'll complain i don't mean poor right yeah if you're driving a fucking within the last five years fucking f-150 you're not poor okay i'm talking poor where you don't have a car and you can't pay your bills and no well yeah that's poor but i'm talking poor you've had 50 grand for a pickup truck you're not poor no yeah you're you're definitely
Starting point is 00:24:07 in a shit place you're chinese food on credit cards as we've talked about that's what you're doing which is which sucks but it's you know head above not above but your nose is sticking out of the water you got lips out yeah you're drawing you're drawing wind this is i haven't seen the surface ever you know i'm one day I'm hoping to see the surface. So it's hard. He said he didn't see his dad. He wanted like, you know, even like shoes. He wanted the new Jordans and couldn't get them.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Of course. You know, shit like that. He's poor. So he says he was crying for attention at this time. Yeah. And he said that this is one of the reasons why he made it to the nba he said he had a long night at a children's hospital and he said quote i'd made up my mind i was really gonna do it this time tonight was my night i was dead serious i was gonna kill myself tonight by any
Starting point is 00:24:59 means in my room it's not where you expected that to go huh sound like i'm gonna turn it around and it's all good from here he said instead he made a deal with god oh okay bargaining that's that's what you do yeah so he made a deal and he said you help me survive and someday i'll play basketball pro basketball which still i don't know how that's a good deal for god what does god get out of that was he a big fucking cavaliers fan i help you when you get to fuck strippers is that what you're telling me that's the i help you okay have all the fun you drink louis the 13th and fuck strippers at the afterwards i don't understand how that works and you get neck tattoos and that's supposed to be for me? Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Well, he said after that, once he makes it, that I'll make sure I glorify your name like no one else is touting. You know what? God has a PR problem. That's not enough. If you look at Q ratings, God's pretty low. People don't know who God is. They're like LeBron James, pretty high, Taylor Swift. But god's like no one's ever mentioned god no god what is that i haven't really heard of that before he does have bad pr though his reps do the reps that he's got out
Starting point is 00:26:19 there for him his reps are terrible god's reps are awful. His hiring department's no good. Absolutely, yeah. No, they have a staunch track record of being finger deep in children, so I would say not. Yeah. Not great. So he said that he's going to glorify God, make sure to glorify your name. He said he made it through the night and left the facility about a month later. He ended up at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. And he played basketball there and was very good.
Starting point is 00:26:50 He can play ball. No one's ever denied that. He led the team to their first state tournament appearance, and he became the Washington Post's All-Met, I guess All-Metropolitan area, player of the year. In one season. Yeah, he turned everything around. Wow.
Starting point is 00:27:09 So he's got it in him to will himself to do things. It's just that takes a lot of mental stamina and a lot of mental capital. And then when you mix that with fighting off all these other things he has going on, that's just too much after a while. I feel like he can hold together for a certain amount of time, but then it's just too exhausting and you've got to kind of let it unravel for a little bit. That's a great argument for how really talented he is. Everybody else is playing against five other players. He's playing against five other players and like 12 different demons. Oh, he's got all his demons everything else
Starting point is 00:27:45 yeah it's completely he's got a lot of shit going on and also the other kids i don't think are dealing with quite the same mental issues as he's dealing with for the most part i mean they have a lot of kids are poor and they have the same problems there but they don't mix that with being having a chemical disorder here as well or you know whatever an actual diagnosable disorder. So he said that one guy here said, quote, I remember his first game playing JV. I was upset just going off on the team, letting him know how disappointed and frustrated I was. He raises his hand, this little quiet sophomore. And they said, Delonte, you have something to say? Quote, he looks at his teammates and says, Coach, I'd like to apologize to you and all of my teammates.
Starting point is 00:28:27 I feel I didn't play to my capabilities tonight, and it'll never happen again. I'm thinking to myself, you're the only one I'm happy with right now, but that's Delonte, always harder on himself than anyone else could be. Taking all the negative credit from everybody, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and he'll internalize it and just, well, it must be me because I suck. Because that's how he thinks. That's a great teammate to have.
Starting point is 00:28:51 It's a good teammate. Yeah. Oh, he's not blaming other people. Finger pointing. That's a real good teammate to have. Absolutely. Taking responsibility. In the Maryland 4A championship, Delonte had 22 points and 8 rebounds, but they lost the game.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Not because of him obviously pretty good like i said he's washington post all met player of the year he averaged 20.2 points 6.5 rebounds 3.9 assists and 3.1 steals per game you know i should have done more yeah if he did that in the nba that's like, you know, you're making hundreds of millions of dollars doing that. Starting point is 00:31:17 His coach in high school said that he was blessed and cursed with, quote, the competitive nature of great players. That's what he said. He said that one time, this coach said during a basketball camp, West played on just a randomly picked team, you know, whatever, throw teams together. And he said that most of the kids were concerned with impressing the college coaches that were in attendance at this basketball camp. And he said that the coach found Delonte sitting on a bench alone
Starting point is 00:31:42 and he asked him, you know, did you hurt yourself? And he said, quote, he looks up at me with tears in his eyes, and he goes, coach, we lost by two. It shouldn't have happened. He said that's what made him special because no one else cared about the score of the game. They were just trying to look good for the scouts. And he's crying about it. He's crying because they lost the game. He said at times his competitiveness gets the best of him.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Sure. That makes a lot of sense. That's the fucking problem with something like that he's got to be completely immersed in something whether it's drugs illness basketball positive thing whatever it is it's kayaking yep and then it gets anything yeah but it gets exhausting after a while so you then you want it's almost like that unraveling is like pressure being let out. Like in the book, The Shining, with the boiler in the basement. They had to keep letting the pressure out. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:32:31 That's what it's like. It's like this. It keeps building up and the balloon's going to pop. So you have to let it unravel and kind of lose it for a little while. So he ends up going to, gets recruited by a few different colleges but he chooses saint joseph's as a college saint joe's saint joe's he goes to that's in maryland right you don't hear yeah i think so you don't hear a lot about that i hear a lot of high schools named saint joseph's but not it's like a catholic school name so and uh hoop dreams that was the
Starting point is 00:33:01 school they were all going right that's why i's where I heard of it. Yeah. Absolutely there. So he said it had a family atmosphere. He played there with Jameer Nelson, who's a future NBA All-Star as well. He was on the team. And they had an undefeated regular season. And they went to the Elite Eight in the tournament in 2004 somehow. Because, yeah. That's wild.
Starting point is 00:33:25 Yeah, you don't see that a lot from them. So his college career here, 2001, 2002, he played in 31 games. He had, let's see, where is it with his points? 5.9 points, three rebounds, 1.2 assists. He's young. It's his freshman year. He's 18. Next year he comes in, plays in 26 games, this time a lot more minutes, and 30.2 minutes a game, and he ends up with 17.3 points a game now.
Starting point is 00:33:50 So 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists. Not bad. Yeah, he's getting better. Then his junior year here, plays in all 32 games. I think that's how many they played. And now he has 18.9 points a game, 5.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists. So he just keeps getting better and better. And his assistant coach at school here said that West would call him
Starting point is 00:34:14 sometimes at midnight to ask to be let into the gym. Yeah. He'd call him, can you go open the gym, coach? Because he wanted to do that. He would tell him the next day that he'd been putting up shots. He said, how's it there? Like 4, 3, 4 in the morning. Shooting.
Starting point is 00:34:29 Shooting around. Shooting drills. Practicing. Yeah. His teammate of his here, Dwayne Jones, who played a little bit in the NBA, he said that sometimes West would just stay there. He'd just sleep there. Because he'd play until like 4 in the morning.
Starting point is 00:34:41 He'd just go take a nap until everybody else showed up later. Go home? Waste sleeping time. It's weird. He turns it into some sort of homeless fantasy camp now. It's like strange. So he said, though, he was not the top prospect on his high school team. And his coach said that he made himself into a professional basketball player. Now, Delonte says, quote, I know that's how I became a professional athlete.
Starting point is 00:35:08 I was always so hard on myself, almost to a fault. Okay. Yeah, that's interesting. One of his assistant coaches in high school said, if he's crazy when it comes to practice, he's crazy in a good way. That's good. That's good, I guess, but it leaks over into other things. He doesn't always have a
Starting point is 00:35:25 practice to go to is the problem so then yeah eventually that runs out that's the thing you can't do that 24 7 i feel like that's what he does he runs to basketball when his anything starts kicking in yeah just grab a basketball and go play and then all that goes away so which is fine exercise is good for your mental condition. But at the same time, you can't always do that. That's just not possible always. Eventually you sit down and you interact with the public. That's it.
Starting point is 00:35:56 So he comes out for the NBA draft that year after his junior year. So June 24, 2004, NBA draft. We've discussed this draft before. Jimmy, number one pick in the 2004 NBA draft draft is dwight howard your ass it is that's right get the fuck out of here we've only discussed this draft like seven times so you probably should get it by now i would say so we did sebastian i remembered something i learned god damn it at 42 i'm learning you retained information that's impressive and i like dwight howard so that's good so dwight howard in the league here he's number one overall amika okafor number two ben gordon number three not a real too stacked of a draft here uh well dang number seven
Starting point is 00:36:39 i forgot the suns drafted him anyway um they drafted drafted Luol Deng? Yes, they did. They did. Whoa. Apparently it was a quick trade here. Then you got Sebastian Telfair at 13, the former Mr. Kardashian, Chris Humphries at 14. A bunch of people. J.R. Smith, Jameer Nelson, his teammate. And then 24 overall, Delonte West is picked.
Starting point is 00:37:05 In the first round. First round by Boston. Okay. Number 24 overall right before Tony Allen. So there we go. And, yeah, not a bad draft for the Celtics. They pick up a couple decent players here. 2004-05 Celtics are 45-37. They finish first in their division and are quickly beaten in the first round of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Quickly dispatched. Quickly dispatched by the pacers so that's nice that team is like i said tony allen you got jesus like oh god tom googley atta was on that team at the end of his career at the celtics oh yeah that's the only people that can afford his fucking salary by jesus christ all that that bad son's deal that unbelievable son's deal everybody else had to pay oh they have like rafe lafrence walter mccarty just a podge podge of power forwards google yada lafrence and mccarty that's a hodgepodge of power forwards from that and antoine walker who was actually the star there starter he was the guy that's gary payton's on this team.
Starting point is 00:38:06 Oh, man. Yeah, post-Kendrick Perkins is on that team, which isn't he still playing, for Christ's sake? No, he's a commentator. Finally retired. He's a commentator, finally. I was a joke. But yeah, he was around forever, Kendrick Perkins. He played for, what, 40, 50 years, I think.
Starting point is 00:38:20 He looked like just somebody's like old uncle out there playing after a while somebody's old dad out there you know what i mean like jesus come on dad you're gonna have a heart attack you're 49 you can't run full court anymore it was a hell of a beard oh it's impressive it is impressive so his rookie season delante has a bunch of injuries and doesn't really play very much 39 games games, only starts seven. 13 minutes a game, doesn't do very much. Four and a half points a game. It's an injured rookie year, and so that's kind of how it is.
Starting point is 00:38:54 He says that going to the NBA was just like being thrown into the deep water is the way he put it. Okay. I can see that, yeah. Felt like he got thrown into the ocean and just tried to keep his doggy paddle going to keep himself afloat which seems exactly like it would be to me and in 2003 when he went in there were still huge nba stars yeah yeah there were still that were still playing there were still like legends i mean christ gary payton's
Starting point is 00:39:21 on his team for christ's sake right you know what i mean I mean? And LeBron just came out, and there's a lot happening. So he said, I basically wasn't as grown as I gave myself credit for, or as much as I wanted to be. As I gave myself credit for is a pretty funny way to put it. So Dimitri, his older brother, the junior, went with him to Boston. So he's not a junior, but he's got a junior. He latched himself to a junior to make sure that the behavior rubs off on him. And, you know, with the instability, I guess, of what is between his ears, it's nice that he's geographically that close to get back to mom.
Starting point is 00:39:59 It's not that far. If there's some sort of normalcy that he can latch on to, that he'll keep him on the rails and keen. If he was in Portland, that'd be tough. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or if he went somewhere like that, just far away from home.

Starting point is 00:40:49 i see him makes a little whirly thing with his finger get it ready turn the lights on shit man so his brother dimitri moves with him but dimitri one day delonte comes home from practice and delete dimitri had left and gone back to Washington to get married on a whim. Just left. Took off. Hang on to it. I'm going to go get married. That's it.
Starting point is 00:41:15 He told Delonte, NBA lifestyle wasn't for me. Sorry. Got to go. I don't like living your life. It's crazy. I don't want to do it. I'm going to get married and settle down. I got a day job. I'm not even in the NBA and I have to live living your life. It's crazy. I don't want to do it. I'm going to get married and settle down. I got a day job.
Starting point is 00:41:25 I'm not even in the NBA, and I have to live this with you. I can't go to the strip club after like you do. I just can't. I can't be bothered with all the fun. I got to go. Yeah, and Delonte said that he respected him for it. He said, quote, best decision of his life to do that. Really?
Starting point is 00:41:41 Good for him. Yeah, I guess it worked out with the woman and everything. So his first year, Delonte makes $939,480. Goddamn nice for a 21-year-old kid. Not bad. That's awesome. Not bad at all. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:55 He said that he loved it. He thought it was great. He said it could, quote, slow up the process of growth, though, of you getting all that money. Because it makes you feel like you're right about everything. Well, it makes you feel like you're done. I mean, I did it. I got the money. I got the bag.

Starting point is 00:44:20 He pays me to be the egg man. So 2005-06 Celtics. They go 33-49 under Doc Rivers. That's not good. No playoffs there. That sucks. This year plays in 71 games. Starts all 71.
Starting point is 00:44:37 Really? Yeah, absolutely. They moved him to point guard this year too. He was playing a lot of point guard. And he was a shooting guard the year before. They played him at the two, which 6'4 is small for a two. You've got to have some serious athleticism to be a 6'4, too. Well, I think what they were trying to do was have a fast shooting guard trying to run and gun then.
Starting point is 00:44:57 Still, that's got to be extra skilled. So he plays 34.1 minutes a game and this time 11.8 points. Not quite the same as college. 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists though. So that's good. This year he makes $1,010,040. Making a little dough on the side. Not bad at all.
Starting point is 00:45:23 Not on the side as his job. So 2006-07 Celtics, they go 24-58. Gets worse. Who is that? Doc again? Doc again. I think it's time to fire Doc Rivers, everybody. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:45:35 I think he's done here. Wow. So he moved to shooting guard this year. They moved him back to shooting guard, but didn't do very well there, so then they moved him back to point guard. Maybe this is why they suck, because Doc isn't a very good coach and moves people around too much when they're still trying to get
Starting point is 00:45:53 their feet wet in the league and never lets them get comfortable. They said that he had a game-winning buzzer beater against Charlotte on November 28, 2006, a game-tying three-pointer with four seconds remaining to send the game to overtime against the Nets. And these were both games that the Celtics eventually won.
Starting point is 00:46:13 One day against the Timberwolves, he had a career-high 31 points, made 12 free throws, and it was a double overtime win. So all 31 of his points came in the second half and two overtimes jesus he is clutch i'm telling you this he's not bad this year though he started toward the end of the season he's sharing minutes with uh with rondo because that's when he came okay so yeah and he remember when remember when rondo was like considered one of the best players in the league i loved that guy i was like this kid's gonna be unbelievable one day he was just terrible like yeah it's rare to see someone go from being that highly touted to being holy
Starting point is 00:46:52 shit this guy is a top three player top five or whatever the fuck you want to say and then just god i wouldn't have that guy as a backup he's so bad i think that's what he is now yeah and barely he's been holding on right i don't even know anymore that's what he is now. Starting point is 00:47:11 Yeah. I would think. So, Delonte this year, 69 games, 47 starts, 32.2 minutes a game, 12.2 points, which is actually up from last year with less minutes. So, I guess that's good. And, you know, not too shabby here. So he's doing okay, 4.4 assists. He's okay.

They kept knocking, traded him. They trade him with Jeff Green and Wally Zerbiak, Jesus Christ, Really? You know, because he was the problem. They kept Doc and traded him.
Starting point is 00:47:49 They trade him with Jeff Green and Wally Zerbiak, Jesus Christ, for a 2008 second-round draft pick. Oh, and a 2008 second-round draft pick to Seattle, when Seattle still had a team, for Ray Allen and Glenn Davis. Great trade. Yeah, not bad. That's an interesting trade. For Boston, that seems like a good trade. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:08 You traded. And he went to Seattle? Yeah, he goes to Seattle. Yeah, that's weird, right? I don't remember him in Seattle either. I don't remember Ray Allen in Seattle. Yeah, I'm trying to think if I remember Ray Allen in Seattle or not. I don't think I do.

Jesus, no wonder they moved fuck yeah that's brutal 20 and 62 pj carlissimo's their coach oh he sucks okay city was thrilled to have him fuck yeah that's ridiculous that's the biggest load of shit ever that they got rid of the fucking the team here so year, he only starts five games. He's playing point guard again at least. 6.8 points, though, not doing very much.
Starting point is 00:48:51 But he's only on the team temporarily. He's only on the team for about half the year because February 21, 2008, he's traded to Cleveland. That's why we don't remember him on there because he was only on there for like a few months, a couple months, half a season. Three-team trade. He's traded by the Sonics with Wally Zerbiak again. Starting point is 00:49:10 I don't know why he's tied to Wally Zerbiak, if that's a contractual thing or what. To the Cavs, the Chicago Bulls trade Joe Smith and Ben Wallace. Those are two very high draft picks. I think Joe Smith was number one overall at one point, and Ben Wallace was very high. And a 2009 second-round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Bulls traded Adrian Griffin to the Supersonics. Cleveland traded Shannon Brown, Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, Cedric Simmons to the Bulls. And the Cavs traded Donyell Marshall and Ira Neubel to the Supersonics.
Starting point is 00:49:45 A fucking mess of people just switched around. None of these people really all that, except for these are kind of... It's later in the career, too. Yeah, later in the career of a lot of these guys. Shannon Brown was good, but, I mean, in 1997. That feels like everybody balancing their cap. Yeah. Like, well, you can take on like four and then

Starting point is 00:50:29 So 2007, 2008, Cleveland here. Let's talk about them. This is the, they have Elgouskis, LeBron. They have LeBron. Let's just say that and keep it at that because that's really the important thing of the team here. So this team team they go 45 and 37 they beat washington in the first round of the playoffs and then lose in seven to boston in the uh conference semifinals so yeah not great here but let's see what happened with uh delonte
Starting point is 00:50:59 delonte for he contributes better for cleveland 10.3 points a game, 4.5 assists a game. Not too bad. Had pretty much the same thing in the playoffs, too. He had 10.8 points in the playoffs out of the 10.3. So pretty good. On April 27, 2008, he made a three-pointer with 5.4 seconds left in a playoff game against Washington. And it was a tie-breaking game winner here. And it took the series to 3-1 Cleveland, so it was a big shot.

Starting point is 00:55:36 knows who delante west is at this moment in time so i'm gonna say grace he makes 1,889,760 dollars this year as well which is also my god the kids made almost five million dollars already and rumored to be banging the future scoring king's mom that's well i wonder if that lit a fire under him so i gotta make people forget and remember me for something else i win some titles man people just be talking about Delonte West fucking my mom the whole time. Shit. So, Wes said this is around the time when he's first diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well. This is when it comes to light, which would probably help him figure himself out a little bit here by a D.C. area specialist.
Starting point is 00:56:23 It was a preseason game in in 2008 he went off on a ref for that game and freaked out and he realized that he needed to chill the fuck out so he says that when he saw the doctor he'd been feeling depressed and he was having days when he was sad and tired and didn't want to get out of bed but then he said there was times when he just wanted to go do something he might just go out and buy a car or go to the mall and spend 25 grand or just go fucking needs to do something. So he said he didn't think the doctor kind of he said he didn't think the doctor took into consideration that such behavior isn't very unusual for a professional athlete with a big paycheck. Yeah. Sometimes you go spend 25 grand
Starting point is 00:57:05 you know yeah he says that he thinks that at that point he now think later on and in hindsight he thinks the doctor kind of misdiagnosed that as manicness whereas that's just professional athletism no no doc being a complete tool that wastes your money like a fucking idiot that's just being an athlete that has nothing to do with illness you're not reckless yeah the whole league's bipolar then is what you're telling me because that's just what we do so he said that he doesn't think he took that into consideration so he didn't think he was bipolar he just thought he was suffering a temporary bout of depression not even exhibiting symptoms of a chronic disorder. So he realized he had a problem.
Starting point is 00:57:47 He went to the doctor. The doctor told him what the problem was, and he said, nah, I don't believe you. That ain't it. That's not it. I think you missed. That's smart there. So he left the Cavaliers for two weeks and went back to home, to Washington, which is always good to go home, as we know, for the crime and sports rules. He sought counseling, started taking medication,
Starting point is 00:58:10 and he separated. He got married sometime in here, by the way. Really? That's the other thing, yeah. He's going to separate from his wife. They got married and they got separated in two weeks. It was very quick. So he said, quote, the ugly head started to show itself again.
Starting point is 00:58:28 It's been haunting me my whole life. Self-destructive behavior. That'll do it. But September 12, 2008, he signs a three-year deal worth $12.7 million. That'll make you feel better. With the Cavs, right? Yep, with the Cavs. So he's going to be moved to
Starting point is 00:58:45 the starting two the starting shooting guard and he's all excited so ready to go here is our why wouldn't you be you make four million a year and with a good team they go 66 and 16 this year which is dominant that's fucking great that's amazing they almost the record for christ's sake it's damn close so they they sweep detroit in the first round of the playoffs they sweep atlanta in the second round of the playoffs i mean they're a juggernaut here then they lose to orlando in six oh no remember that there's like the kind of no-name orlando team that was just kind of well they had somehow beating people yeah yeah but it was but it wasn't like this they weren't considered a juggernaut at all. They don't have LeBron James.
Starting point is 00:59:26 Yeah, exactly. But they put it together. So Cleveland this year, or for him, I mean, Delante starts all 64 games he plays, except for the couple weeks he had to go away. 11.7 points a game, 3.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds. What is it? 3.2 rebounds. A steal and a half a game.
Starting point is 00:59:46 Not bad. Not bad. Pretty damn good. 13.8 in the playoffs point-wise, so pretty good. He makes $3,850,000 this year. Hell yeah. Not bad. July 2009 is when he marries his high school sweetheart.

Starting point is 01:01:09 He marries her. Her name's Kimberly. College sweetheart. They get married. That's July. September 17, 2009. He gets pulled over and has some guns, we'll just say. Let's talk about this.
Starting point is 01:01:22 Okay. This is fucking interesting pulls him over on the beltway there he is found carrying three loaded guns oh for some reason that seems like too much right yeah unless you're on the SWAT team that's probably too many so he Jesus he's traveling north on the beltway on a cam on a can-am spider one of the three-wheeled crazy he has these he has three guns in a can-am spider that's a motorcycle it's a three-wheeler that you ride on the road the giant three-wheeler one of those with with two seats side by side each but like all his guns have to be in that seat or they're on his person that's the stupid part yeah we'll
Starting point is 01:02:03 talk all about this yeah and while he's traveling with three loaded guns yeah on a ridiculous mode of transportation right he cuts off a canine officer for prince george's oh fantastic which is again try not to cut cops off that's probably not good so the cop pulls him over for making an unsafe lane change no directional or anything like that and when the cop approached the vehicle or motorcycle or whatever the fuck this thing is this stupid conveyance yeah his conveyance west immediately told him i have a handgun on my waistband which is actually good you're supposed to do that if you have a handgun on your waistband don't be
Starting point is 01:02:40 don't grab for it to pull it out but i got this gun. You'll get shot like that. Don't do that. Tell them about it. So he does that. So the cop then calls for backup so he can search the car there. So he ends up finding three guns. He's got a loaded Beretta 9mm in his waistband. Then he's got a Ruger.357 Magnum strapped to his leg. That's a hand cannon. Why the fuck isum strapped to his leg. That's a hand cannon.
Starting point is 01:03:08 Why the fuck is that strapped to your leg? That goes mid-calf to ankle. That's a big gun. That's a hammer. That's a big gun, man. Then he had a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back. What are you, fucking El Mariachi? What is happening here right now? That's what this is. Have you seen that movie from back why does he have that he thinks he's fucking el mariachi that's all i can
Starting point is 01:03:32 come up with because why else would you have a shotgun and a guitar case slung over your back that's ridiculous all three of the guns are on his person dude unbelievable he's like the fucking guy in uh raising aing Arizona on the motorcycle. That's who he is. Does he have grenades to his chest, too? Yeah. A bandolier of grenades. He was on his way to pick them up, I feel like, and then he was going to drive around after that.
Starting point is 01:03:56 Maybe he thought it was post-apocalypse and it was like Mad Max times. He lost his fucking mind. We don't know. Go get my grenades. I just had them cleaned. Oh, I just had them shined. I had my guy. He was done getting me eggs. He had nothing to do. I told him, shine my grenades i had i just had them cleaned oh i just i just had them shine i had my guy he was done getting me eggs he had nothing to do i told him shine my grenades hey egg man hey egg man come here a minute so police charged him with two criminal counts of
Starting point is 01:04:15 carrying a handgun for the ruger and the beretta and issued him a traffic citation for driving in in excess of reasonable and prudent speed prudentudent and Delonte West don't go well together, those words at all. You can't. Never prudent. Right. The word prudent implies taking inventory of a situation and applying yourself to it appropriately. If you can't take inventory, how's he going to appraise where he's supposed to be at? In excess of reasonable and prudent speed.
Starting point is 01:04:47 What is that? Never prudent, never reasonable. So that's – you could just give him a ticket saying your life is not prudent or reasonable. But the court records show that they said that he was within his rights to carry the shotgun. I don't know if a guitar case is the appropriate way to do it. It's a fascinating way to do it. It's interesting. It seems bouncing around on a motorcycle in a guitar case
Starting point is 01:05:12 doesn't seem like a safe place for a loaded shotgun. Am I wrong? Not necessarily. Yeah, no. I don't think you're wrong. I do agree that the shotgun is likely the least, like... Oh, illegal. What is that? The least illegal least like. Oh, illegal. What is that?
Starting point is 01:05:26 The least illegal probably. Yeah. Yeah. It's the most appropriate weapon to carry is like, because there's only a couple shots. It's not like. I guess. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:34 But they're pretty. Pretty stout. Pretty stout shots. So is the.357 strapped. It was like that. That's crazy. That's a lot. They said it wasn't clear why he was so heavily armed at the time, number one.
Starting point is 01:05:48 Because that's not like he didn't have them in a box or something. They're on him, ready for action here. Or why he was traveling alone at 10 o'clock at night cutting police officers off either. There's really no explanation for any of it. He's armed like an undercover FBI agent. Yeah, that's what the fuck now his father said him and his father are going to have two different accounts of why he had guns on him oh his father said quote this is a wild quote all i can say is delonte was looking behind his back and protecting
Starting point is 01:06:20 himself okay he said his son was looking out both for specific people and because he was generally concerned about his well-being being a high-profile athlete so then they said well is there anybody who might be targeting him and he wouldn't say he declined to say he said quote quote bottom line is there's a lot of not too nice people out there okay one of them's name is uh lebron james and he's still pissed he's still mad yeah he's you never know if he's gonna come after you they said he was very cooperative with the police the entire time that'll go away and you know in years here he'll be less frustrated yeah so they arrest him sees his guns and his motorcycle he's released from jail on personal recognizance and all of that shit cleveland general manager danny ferry said quote we are aware of the situation and take this matter very seriously the the silver
Starting point is 01:07:18 quote just say just say silver silver you know what i'm gonna to say. I'm aware. We're monitoring it. We're very concerned about it and blah, blah, blah. And if something else happens in the next two months, you'll never hear about it again from us. Have a good one. Bye. I'll bet the last interaction with the media and a sports figure, whatever they said, I'll bet it applies here, too. Yes. He said, we have been in communication with delante and his family we're gathering more
Starting point is 01:07:47 information and will not have further comment until the appropriate time which is when you stop asking me about it and then we'll just forget it ever happened there's never a follow-up comment to this by the way ever and if there is we'll run that comment on page 37 no you'll never hear about it yeah he recently had gotten married and purchased a $1.05 million home in Fort Washington. He had missed several games for Cleveland with his broken wrist the year before, but they said, you know, they're expecting him to be a big contributor this year again. Here's his account of what happened. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 01:08:18 Yeah. He said, first of all, he's an avid outdoorsman. Okay. Which is no reason to have a fucking 357 on your leg and a nine mil i don't i'm not a hunter yeah but i've seen people in the woods and stuff if you go into like dicks into the hunting section not a lot of handguns on leg holsters there for shooting deer it's not usually the way that happens yeah and avid outdoorsman you're driving a motorcycle that is equipped only for the street it's not going anywhere you're driving a motorcycle in the city on the highway
Starting point is 01:08:54 with all these guns and usually hunters don't usually take their weaponry out in guitar cases either right not a lot of fender holsters for for winchester not a lot of them so this is amazing he said he likes to hunt and fish in the backwoods of virginia but you know he said he also though he he said that he likes guns because he can they were talking about that he can afford them that's why he likes guns and you know he likes to buy cars and clothes and things that he likes yeah he likes guns so why not he said that he likes. A lot of things, yeah. And he likes guns. So why not? He said that he returned to his home in Maryland after the season, and he had to try to find a good place to store his weapons.
Starting point is 01:09:34 So he said, I know where to – he said, I see them more as collector's items is what they are. Okay. Yeah, you know, like a – They rarely lose value. That's a good point. Mickey Mantle signed baseball. You know, it's the same thing. He said, so he chose his recording studio,
Starting point is 01:09:50 because of course he had a recording studio built into his home. Sure does, yeah. So it's in his fully furnished basement recording studio. He said it's his sanctuary. No kids allowed down there. None of that shit. You know, this is his area. So he said that would be the perfect spot to keep them.
Starting point is 01:10:08 And he said it was totally fine. Everything was great until that night when he said he felt super tired. So he went to bed early. He took his nightly dose of Seroquel, which is a drug that treats bipolar disorder, and he gets into bed. So after he falls asleep asleep he said he's a just woken up by shouting he said it just as his wife comes in shouting well the way he put it quote ma dukes came running upstairs into my room cursing me i love it i love it she's saying saying she wanted all these motherfuckers out of my house. I came to like, what's going on?
Starting point is 01:10:46 I was already on my Seroquel trip. Okay. A few of my cats had found some stuff in the studio and they were living the whole gangster life thing. Guns in the air and this and that. He had his friends over and his wife walked down to the basement and saw his friends playing with guns while he's asleep. Everything and everybody's got to go.
Starting point is 01:11:07 Motherfuckers out of my house. You mean the guns or the people? Both. Everybody. You too. Get on your motorcycle. And he said, quote, and I said, oh, my God, what the fuck are y'all doing in here? Y'all got to go.
Starting point is 01:11:21 Mama ain't on that shit. Now, if mama ain't on that shit. None of us are on that shit. You motherfuckers got to go. Mama ain't on that shit. Now, if mama ain't on that shit. None of us are on that shit. You motherfuckers got to go. That's the way it works. Yeah. He said, kids are running around upstairs. It's time to go.
Starting point is 01:11:35 So, yeah, he's all, you know, whatever. So he said he was all awake now from the commotion, obviously, from all the chaos going on. So he said, you know what I'll do? I should just relocate these guns right now at night. I'll just move them to an empty house that I own that's pretty close by. On that Seroquel trip. On my Seroquel trip, yeah, which he doesn't get charged for anything like that, I guess. There's no – it's not disabled.
Starting point is 01:12:00 You know what I'm talking about. It's not something that you're impaired driving. It's not an impaired – yeah, driving. It's not an impaired. Yeah, exactly. I guess not. I don't know. If they did, the cops missed that one, I guess. Maybe they were distracted by all the guns.
Starting point is 01:12:12 So he said all of his other vehicles were blocked in by guests' cars. Even though he just told everyone to get the fuck out. Their cars are still there, apparently. And he said it was just going to be a short trip going back and forth. So he just haphazardly loaded up on his on his motorcycle there on his can-am and put the weapons in quote a velcro type bag he said not a desperado hard case gun shooting out of the side type of case that's what he said quote unquote and set off said, so I'm on the beltway cruising.
Starting point is 01:12:47 He said, soon as I soon I start realizing I'm dozing in and out. This isn't good. That's Seroquel, right? I guess. I'm heavily armed on a fucking kind of three wheel. Let me dozy. Let me get a little sleepy sleeps. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:02 He said, I opened my eyes and I went from this lane to that. I'm swerving. And by the time I wake up, I'm about three exits past my exit. Oh, my God. He was in a complete. He was basically out for three exits. At least because he's three exits past it. So he didn't even know it was coming up.
Starting point is 01:13:20 Oh, my God. He said, there's this truck flying beside me he said and i'm scared to death yeah so i seen an officer coming up and i try to flag him down why why are you flagging him down someone's passing me you don't get it i'm on the highway and fucked up hi i'm trying to lead I'm on the highway and fucked up. Hi. I'm trying to lead. He said, I pulled up.
Starting point is 01:13:47 I pull up next to him. He slows down and I get up in front of him. I tell the officer I'm not functioning well and I'm transporting weapons. Oh, my. The rest of the story is what it is. He pulled over a cop in his mind, but the cop said he just fucking cut him off and was like, what the fuck is this guy doing? In Dalante's mind, he was communicating with the cop, telling him things, and the cop was like, here's some crazy fuck cut me off. Holy shit. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 01:14:16 And if you walk up to someone who's driving erratically and basically tried to pull you over, which we've only had one other time in crime and sports, I believe. Someone tried to pull the cop over and go, I'm fucked up right now. You got to help me. And then he says, I'm not functioning well and I'm transporting weapons. You're asking for a real uncomfortable confrontation. I'm shocked that they didn't, I guess, inquire more about what, why are we not functioning well? Yeah, what's mentally. I don't know, DUI issued? Yeah, I guess that's what about what, why are we not functioning well?
Starting point is 01:14:45 Like, yeah, what's issued? Yeah, I guess I guess he's telling him, but he's not slurring his speech. And if his eyes looked okay, the cop would be like,
Starting point is 01:14:52 okay, he seems physically okay. Maybe he's just having a mental breakdown. The man just woke up from a two mile nap. That's yeah. Yeah. He doesn't even know. He's got to be groggy.
Starting point is 01:15:01 How long was your nap? About six exits? Oh, that's not, okay. I woke up three exits past my exit. Didn't even know mine was coming up. Shit. He said, the rest of the story is what it is. I'm not proud of it, but it looks way worse than it was. No, it doesn't.
Starting point is 01:15:19 I think the way he described it was worse than the way the cops described it. What he just described me i'm way more worried about him than if he just had a bunch of weapons on him driving around because he was worried people would jack him right the cops just said we pulled him over on a on a i mean a dangerous vehicle to be transporting three weapons but he's telling me i was unalert i was not aware of what i was what i was doing yeah with weapons that's even that's so frightening that's terrifying that's what i mean anytime you have weapons you should be hyper alert yeah yeah and granted in that vehicle he's probably going to get more hurt than me if
Starting point is 01:15:56 he hits me but oh i'm sure he's gonna fly off somewhere yeah who's to say where that shotgun goes and if if or if it doesn't discharge when it lands there? Oh, shit. So, yeah, he said, I was already two years with a contract with Cleveland. And he said, then I got into the incident and no teams wanted to even deal with me. I got written off as some crazy gun-toting terrorist or something of that sort. From there, it had nothing to do with what I did on the basketball court. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 01:16:29 Within a couple of weeks, his wife divorces him. Really? After that. Yeah, she's had enough. Super not on that shit. Mama ain't on that shit. He's got a really – it's on now, yeah. So 2009, 2010, Cleveland 61-21.
Starting point is 01:16:48 They beat the Bulls in the first round of the playoffs and lose in sixth to the Celtics there. Celtics are their kryptonite, absolutely. So this is again this year. By the way, did you know that Shaq was on? Do you remember Shaq being on the Cavs? Wait, on the Cavs? I completely forgot that Shaquille O'Neal wore a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey for an entire fucking season. That can't be true. I swear to God, the 2009-2010 season, Shaquille O'Neal played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Starting point is 01:17:17 That is shocking. That's when LeBron was trying to add those, well, let's get somebody else. Let's add a piece and we'll make it. trying to add those well let's get somebody else let's add a piece and we'll make it uh sebastian telfer another another alumnus here there so doesn't quite work out though but delonte let's see what he did 8.8 points a game jesus he's a shooting guard now by the way not a point guard anymore 8.8 points 3.3 assists not great here and 0.9 steals. I think that hurt him. I think that incident messed him up a little bit here. It feels like it.
Starting point is 01:17:56 Now, in 2014, there's a Slate.com article here in 2014 talking about this, and it says, quote, When West erupted in anger at a reporter early in the 2009-2010 season, they said that they windhorsed one of the reporters and others left it out of their stories, partly, he says, out of sensitivity for what West was dealing with. Though a course of staying mum also coincided with the team's interest
Starting point is 01:18:17 in keeping negative incidents out of the papers. They said Scott Robb, the author of the anti-LeBron James manifesto, the whore of Akron. What? Jesus Christ. Have you ever been to Cleveland, people? If you haven't, you'd go, gee, if I had $100 million, would I live here?
Starting point is 01:18:35 Fuck no. It would be everybody's answer to that. No. I would go somewhere better. Now, the way he did it was douchey. I'm taking my talents to South Beach. It was douchey. But still, this is you should understand it.
Starting point is 01:18:48 You goddamn right. The windows in your nice hotels are just curtains. There's no window. I've been fucking the governor of Ohio probably doesn't live in Ohio because he can. You know, it's like this place is terrible. I'm sorry. We actually did. Didn't we do a show under his office?
Starting point is 01:19:05 Was that the governor or the mayor? I think it was the governor. That was a state. Columbus. It was in Columbus. That's a state building. It's in Columbus. I think that's what it was.

So this guy, quote, was later critical of those reporters who chose not to speak up about west's locker room blow up writing in deadspin rob flatly declared that west had been quote off his meds which is really a no yeah just say that flippant uh thing to say bullshit dismissive you got to explain that that's yeah that's kind of ridiculous here they said though in this article i'm just
Starting point is 01:19:43 reading from slate.com here rob though is a model article, I'm just reading from Slate.com here, Rob, though, is a model of sensitivity compared to Peter Vesey, who asked his New York Post readers to, quote, consider the fact that West has depression problems and suffers from mental illness. Well, that's actually fine. That's just stating facts. Quote, Vesey continued idiotically, what prevents him from concealing weapons in his Cavaliers workout bag and sneaking them into the arena or practice complex and on a particularly moody blues day, blasting everybody in sight.
Starting point is 01:20:14 Okay, you definitely took, that's a little, wow. Talk about having an inch and taking fucking 20 miles. That was ridiculous. an inch and taking fucking 20 miles that was ridiculous he's got depression so what's to stop him from coming in with his guns and taking out the entire cleveland cavaliers team shooting everybody in sight yeah what a wild uh jump conclusion what you're right sir dude that's that's what who does he write for the new york post that's why the new york post is fucking homeless people's toilet paper it's trash it's a fucking it's a very it's definitely coming from a point of view. Let's just put it that way. So Wall Street people use to keep the rain off their head and then they throw it in the trash as they enter a building so they don't have to carry an umbrella.
Starting point is 01:20:58 And it's where construction workers get their news. So, yeah, that's explains a lot yeah exactly you see i knew it it's just stuff to make people angry yeah he said quote um this is delonte west what he says about it quote being a little older now and looking back you see things would have been a little different if i just told them what was really bothering me i don't think that i'm bipolar that medicine you're giving me i don't need that this is what's bothering me this is why i'm upset this is why i cry at night time but i didn't know how to say that okay i mean i don't know if he's misdiagnosed that happens but you're not often the best person to diagnose yourself that's the problem that's why doctors generally go to other doctors because
Starting point is 01:21:41 they're not right self-diagnosis is the the wonder if he's seeing a psychiatrist at this time. Well, yeah, he said he's just mad that he wasn't, he didn't assert himself more and tell the doctor what was wrong with him rather than have the doctor tell him. Okay. So this article continues speaking with West on the phone last fall.
Starting point is 01:21:58 I mentioned that an increasing number of players, increasing number of teams were bringing in psychologists and psychiatrists to work with players. I guess everybody crazy now huh he quipped maybe i'm not the only one then maybe there's something to that i think everybody has there's so much pressure inherent in that that you would help to talk to somebody once in a while in professional sports i can't imagine the pressure's sick yeah i got enough and i've never played a fucking down no no that's what i feel like i feel like tons of every week is like jesus christ i feel so much pressure to not suck so yeah it's got to be way worse if they're gonna have when we're done there's not hour-long
Starting point is 01:22:35 shows dedicated to analyzing what we just did and breaking it down for fucking three hours and then skip bail is talking about arguing with a black guy about it. Like, that doesn't happen. We're not competing for a ring at the end of this. No, no. So, God, I hate Skip Bayless still. I love that, by the way, they can't find, they're like trying to find someone. They're like, is there any black guy who will argue with this asshole?
Starting point is 01:22:56 Anybody. But, like, that won't just, like, reach over and crack him in the fucking nose. Because I'm sure there's been eight of them, like, I'll whoop his ass when he's being a fucking asshole. No, no, that won't work. And he'll show up contractually every day without fail, no matter what he says. Yes.
Starting point is 01:23:11 No, that person doesn't exist. I want, the matchup I want is, I want Skip Bayless and Charles Barkley. West suggested he did not instigate the fight. Obviously, he said the guy approached with a firearm. The cop said, why did you hit him? Did he attack you first, self-defense, or did did you hit him that's what they can hear him talking um they said that the interaction the officer had been suspended and will be dealt with heart uh harshly if the probe determines he was behind the video's release not suspended for handcuffing him for releasing the video to say this is Delonte West. He was treated at the Rebound Therapy Center in Florida, and he's now working there trying to help other people. So that's nice. October 2021, October 20th, 2021, he is arrested. I guess it was just before 9 p.m. Officers responded to the department's lobby for an individual yelling and banging on the glass doors. It was him. He is screaming profanities while holding in two separate hands, in one hand an open can of Ice House beer, and the other hand an open bottle of mango flavored vodka oh he's on it this is not yeah this has nothing to do with mental health this is i'm drunk in the streets
Starting point is 02:18:13 and i'm and i'm fucking yelling at people so officer said that he began to walk away while still screaming and they told him to stop he refused to stop then they commanded him to place the open containers on the sidewalk he complied with those demands however then he stood back up and began to place his hands in inside of his waistband of his pants oh god delante so the police officer one of them unholstered and pulled a taser on him and gave him uh gave him a commands here And he complied, dropped to his knees with his hands in the air. And, yeah, they said that when they put him in the back of the car, he continued to be belligerent, screaming profanities, and on, quote, obscure rants. They said that he smelled of alcohol.

Starting point is 02:20:23 So he wants to help him. October 22, 2022, arrested again. Booked on multiple charges over a vehicle trespassing incident. This is 5.53 p.m. Police receive a call after witnesses said they saw Wes trying to get inside a vehicle that didn't belong to him. Oh, God. They said they tried to detain him for trespassing, but he allegedly became aggressive and fled the scene.
Starting point is 02:20:45 He was eventually found, detained, and booked on four criminal charges, vehicle trespassing, entering a vehicle, fleeing from law enforcement, and public intoxication. Mark Cuban said it's a struggle for him. I mean, addiction is awful and mental illness is awful. He's at a point in life where he's got to want to be helped. It on him yeah he's got to stop drinking and doing shit too that's the thing he can't go saying that he thought it was his car because he knows damn well he doesn't have a car no that's the fucking thing totally so all right let's end this on a delante west quote oh okay quote i like to play i like to paint murals of the ocean that I see beyond the horizon because I feel if in order for us to grow, we got to know.
