Starting point is 00:02:00 Tortort. I put a bit of a hoi, like a slightlyishy sort of voice. I didn't mean to but I thought it was a pirate. Yeah, no I wanted to be a piratey but then I Now you think you sounded Irish. Yes, can't I? Is that okay? Well, I'm not saying they can't be. Hey, I'm not oppressing anyone. Wow. Thank you. Whatever they want to be. Thank you. They can River dance and they can pirate. Oh well. And one of those things is valuable. That's right. Piracy is more valuable than River Dirk and so on though. Oh wow. one of those things is valuable. That's right, piracy is more valuable than
Starting point is 00:02:25 River Dirk and so on though. Oh wow, we're out of again. No 30 seconds in. Are we going? Well, mateys. We are, me captain. Thank you. I'm the captain, I love that. Boop boop. Yeah, I reckon you have the captain. Land. Land a hoi. Yeah. Walk the plank. dirty dog your see dog a baby Jones locker. I love that that phrase baby Jones locker Like your baby Matt's Jones and I'm the locker. Yeah Yeah, that makes sense tell just a secret she will not she will not tell anyone yeah Like the time he told me about that rash you had I didn't tell anybody that What Yeah, like the time he told me about that rash you had I didn't tell anybody that What I
Starting point is 00:03:09 He realized that I was looking at him but hadn't addressed him You can get away with it. Yes. I had smallpox. All right. You'll see as charged Research for the show is very intense. Yeah, I've told you we do we do work really hard at researching in this show Maybe too hard. Maybe too hard. Well, I'd say not in my case. Okay, which is great because it is your turn to present a topic this week. Yes. I like that phrase, present a topic. I like that. Matt, you are the presenter. Have we not said that before? Sure, we have. He's presenting. No, I just like it. It makes me think of previous topic, David Attenborough. We are some.
Starting point is 00:03:47 And presenting. When he says they're presenting, it means something else. Oh. Oh. Very true. Very true. Something a whole lot better than this show, but still.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Yeah. And I'm all fucking. But, man, is your turn to do a report? To do a go on? To do a present. And as always, you are about to apologize, but you lack of research you have done. No, no apologies. All right, great. You get what you deserve sometimes. Who our listeners get what they deserve? What have they done? Well, they're just in life, you know. No, no, okay. Sometimes you give what you get, you get what you give.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Again, they've done nothing to deserve a shoddy report. But, haven't you said there's a free podcast so essentially, get what you pay for. So you're saying that? Fuck them. Is that what you're saying? No, I'm not saying that at all. Good, heaven's making me. I love our listeners. How much? Enough to do a good report for them?
Starting point is 00:04:49 Apparently not. Well, they just agreed. I get nothing but good feedback. Yeah, when you're drunk, they love it. Yeah, did we go to it this week saying, when you do your next drunk episode, like you said, thing that we do on purpose. I love that.
Starting point is 00:05:04 It's not just that our podcasting has to fill in around the rest of our lives. So sometimes one of us has been drinking that day. It can happen. And more often than not, in fact, 100% of the time it has been Mr. Pads Stewart. Yeah. Well, that doesn't sound great, but I have a fun life,
Starting point is 00:05:21 so I'm okay. Yeah, you're right. I'll drink away the shame, which I think is healthy. Yeah, that's a good way to do it. Just repress it. All this talk about drinking is very appropriate for this topic. Is it? Well, the listeners at home will be like, oh yes,
Starting point is 00:05:38 this links up very nicely. But we do not as yet know. That's what he's done there. He's sigwying. So, sigwying. Now, as Jess says, we have That's what he's done there. He's sigwang. sigwang. Now as Jess says, we have no idea what you're talking about. And I found this to be one of the more exciting times in my week because we're about to talk about something. I'm about to learn about something.
Starting point is 00:05:53 I don't know what it is. That's exciting to you. Yeah, it is. I'm the nerd you are on the show. We know that. We know that. That's the cool boy. Jess, you're the joyful soul.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Oh. That's the best one by far. I mean, that's much better than a nerd and what was mad? The cool boy. Oh, the cool boy. That's pretty great. I was expecting an insult, so that's thank you. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Sometimes. I was waiting for something. I give compliments when they're least expected. I'm in the middle of an argument, I say, God, your eyes are beautiful. And they're like, I'm trying to rob this bank. You're right. Is that what you're getting an argument about? I'm trying to rob this bank. You're right. Is that why you're getting an argument about,
Starting point is 00:06:27 hey, don't rob this bank and I think it's a good idea. Well, we do think it's a good idea. God, you're as beautiful. No, all right. I'm really thinking my love choices. And then they leave and I go on with my day. Uh huh. Silent hero.
Starting point is 00:06:42 And here I am. That was my morning, so. Where else is? Good to be here. It's weird you haven't yet mentioned to that. Well here I am. That was my morning, so. Where else is? Good to be here. We didn't get mentioned to that. Well, I like to slip my stories in when people least expected. People are like, give us all your money,
Starting point is 00:06:53 and I'm like, did you know that one time, my parents owned a chao chao dog. And they're like, this is not appropriate. And then they leave, and I've saved the situation again. It's very good. Well. That's what I made up thing. No, they owned a chao chao. Do you know what well no they aren't a cha cha what's a cha cha it's like a edible dog no it's it like a dog that's got like a bowl built into it they quite a rare
Starting point is 00:07:19 what is wrong with you get over here cha cha cha dog. It's dinnertime. What are we serving up today? Like it's got a bowl that's stuck taped to us back stuck taped. Yeah stuck taped in What what are we what's a cha cha dog? I was one of those you know when you go you see yeah I don't know maybe have have have like a Chinese temple or something in that vein and it has dogs guarding it. But their models are cha cha dogs, they're like an ancient sort of Chinese dog. And they're quite rare but you can get them here and my dad loves them. We had two when I was growing up. Cool.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Yeah, both had Chinese names. Chinese names. Ming is the first one and the second one was Melee. And they have purple tongues. What? And one time when my dad took the dog to the vet, just for an annual check-up, the vet was like, he was a new vet. He was like, what's wrong with this dog?
Starting point is 00:08:12 I think it's dying. It's got a purple tongue. And the senior vet was like, no, that's just what they look like. Yeah, if you ever looked at its tongue before, Dave's dead. You're dick. No, no, my dad was confused. It's the vet. Oh, my dad was confused. Just the vet.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Oh, the vet was confused. Yeah, the vet. He's changing the math here. Look, I have to be honest, I do zone out a lot when Dave talks. Ha, ha, ha. I know, mate. I know. Story of my life.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Another story he'll tell in another inconvenient. The boring story of Dave's life. Well, that was a little too far, Jesus. But we're not here to talk about my dogs. Oh, you're boring life. Well, we had a Venn diagram, the dog chat, and the boring life does cross over quite a lot. We're here to talk about Matt's stupidest topic.
Starting point is 00:08:58 I thought you'd be rejoicing in my boring conversation because it puts off the time you have to talk about something. No, no, I can't wait to talk about this very interesting topic. You sound enthusiastic. Here's the question. We always start with a question regular listener's would know that. And that is a question about the topic that I asked these guys, right? And then they answer it and it's a really fun way to get in the topic. Very good fun. Can I just say that it just accidentally happened because I decided to represent the first report with the topic just as a way to get into it and then it just
Starting point is 00:09:32 happened from the bottom. It was really organic. That's what I liked about it. Now it's forced but it started in an organic way. The first episode was organic, 50 episodes since then. It's all scripted. Very artificial. We don't even record this in the same room anymore. Yeah, no. We read from a script. We record our bits separately. Line.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Do go on, sorry. That's what I was going to say. Do go on. Matt, what's the question? Question this week. Which Australian band performed 12 sold out shows at Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City in 2003. 2003! And Aussie band.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Aussie band. 12... So that shows. At the MSG, that's like one of the pinnacle of what you would say of performance. Is it an older band that were doing a... Like a comeback? Yeah. No. No.
Starting point is 00:10:23 They were sort of moving into their peak. In 2003. They'd been around, you know, 10 years or so. Who was big in 2003? Oh, Aussie bands. Well, the big Aussie bands are always the powder fingers, but the silver chairs. I mean, silver chair were big.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I believe in their first album ever since, but I don't think in 2003, they'd be in the US. Hmm, in the US. Oh, is it Jett? No. They were quite big there. Yeah, they saw a few million albums in the US.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I saw Jett at the Palais Theatre when I was like 17. Did you? I was so good. Yes, I reckon they put on a good show. They were good. I was a rock and roll band. The first album was very good. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Thanks. It's really, really, really, really good. What's John Renn? Are they rock band? Uh, of sorts, but I'd think... Alright, Olivia Newton John. Their market is younger. I repeat, Olivia Newton John. I know.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Is it the Wiggles? It is the Wiggles. I don't think I would have thought that. That's amazing. This is from the hat. This is from the hat because I nearly Pick this one up. Ooh lucky I picked it up and put it back down. Yeah, I picked up and put it back down so Matt's got a double pick That's the worst yeah, you all know it gives you a chance to make a choice
Starting point is 00:11:39 Chance to choose but now you've got just a slopey This is no no and this one was put in the hat by Nick Dramanos Thank you Nick. Thank you Nick is Twitter handle the neck of crime. Oh Very good isn't it possibly six or under? The neck of crime makes me feel like he might be older but seven yes the Wiggles very good two doesn't three still two kids at twelve I like that you said in a way they were a rock band why they see themselves I've got an electric guitar they see
Starting point is 00:12:16 them they see themselves as a rock and roll roots yeah rooted in rock rooted in rock as we all do we all know mate I rooted in rock so good through a lot of my University days. Good heaven. Great. Um Doesn't fully make any sense is it? No. No. Or in any way. All right. Great. Um Did you guys get into Wiggles' kids? I was about to say because no, but but they were active during my time. I I think I saw the I realized later. I think my mom's told me a story of taking me to the Wiggles and me falling asleep. Nice. But you know, that's, I'm sure that that must be a slightly depressing part of their job
Starting point is 00:12:52 where they look at and maybe a good fraction of their audience is asleep at any one time. Especially when they sing their little lullaby song. Especially fucking Jeff. I listen to an hour, an hour long interview with one of with one of their manager and he was talking to his saying, you know, the kids, they're the most honest audience you'll get. There's no bullshit. He's like, if I go see a band, I'll clap at the end of a song. No matter why.
Starting point is 00:13:20 He's like, kids don't do that. They'll either dance if they enjoy it, or they'll fall asleep if they're dead or wanna keep. You said that, which is obviously that cut. He's still thinking, right? He's still 20 years later. Yeah, which out. I thought that was kind of interesting.
Starting point is 00:13:35 I was gonna bring that up later in the fun facts, but yeah. I was a taste maker as a six-year-old. I had cousins who were really into it, who were a bit younger than me. So I was exposed to the wiggles, but I was like a little bit too old for the pilot. Exposed to the wiggles. Yeah. The wiggles story began in 1991 when Anthony Field was studying to become a preschool teacher at
Starting point is 00:14:01 McQuarry University. Anthony there's a blue one. There's a blue one. There's the blue one. He likes to eat. That's Anthony's thing. He likes to eat. That's what you're saying, like to eat. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:14:13 That's an interesting thing to like. I mean, we're all good to do it. Yeah, we all got to sleep too, but everybody bloody teases Jeff all the time. That's true. Anyway, go on. Yeah, sure it's for all that Jeff. Yeah, sorry, mate. So a lot of a lot of
Starting point is 00:14:25 My main source for this was like a little a short memoir written by Anthony's brother who played Captain Feather Sword. No, that's what I thought as well. It wasn't his brother I always thought that as well, but apparently not who's been who's Paul in this story Paul Is Anthony's brother who goes on to manage the band in the mid-90s. And he's still today. Never plays Captain Feather Sword. No neither of his brothers. John, another one of his brothers wrote a lot of the songs. What? But he's never performed in the band. I was sure it was. I was sure. So maybe. No, surely one of them, it wasn't one of them to sneak off
Starting point is 00:15:03 and come back on as Captain Fethersall. Well, that was another theory. That was another theory. People would be like, Anthony would always, sometimes like, I'm a Fethersall, but no,
Starting point is 00:15:11 Captain Fethersall is his own man. Look, let's, sorry, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I mean, a lot of that is wrong. Okay. Okay. Uh, Anthony had just gone back to study at Macquarie University
Starting point is 00:15:22 after taking a couple of years off to focus on his band, The Cockroaches. You know, sick. He used to be in a band called The Cockroaches and then we're starting to get some real success. They had a their self-titled debut, went platinum. What?
Starting point is 00:15:36 And really? Yeah, that's quite a big deal. Yeah, yeah. What did he play in the band? Guitar, he was lead guitar. Interesting. His brother Paul, who went on to, guitar, he was lead guitar. Interesting. His brother Paul, who went on to manage the band, was the lead singer.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Cool. And then there are the other brothers, John, and other guitarists in the band. There are six piece band. Another member of the band was named Jeff Fatt. On keyboard. Yeah. And they also had a rowdy named Greg Page.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Oh, hello. They had heaps of success in Australia including a top 10 hit with the song She's the one really. I've been listening to it. Yeah, is it good? It's yeah, it's not you know, it's that sort of pretty pretty poppy pub rock sound I guess cool I I guess. Cool. I listened to it a bunch of times this morning trying to get into it, but now it's fine. It's a fine song. Really forcing yourself to like something? That's the way to do it, Eric. They had another bunch of charting songs.
Starting point is 00:16:35 No, the top 10 ones, but no, the few in the top 40, top 30. So is this late early night? Wait up. Hey, what now? That's my favorite. What does that mean? Hey, what now? Hey, what now? Hey, what now? Hey, what now? There's another one. That's a good one. What does that mean? Hey, what now? Hey, what now? Hey, what now?
Starting point is 00:16:48 Is that what it is? What now? They also had a song. The situation is very important. They also had a song called Do the Monkey. Do the Monkey. Ooh, ooh, ooh. That's how they transition all song. Yeah. They re-recorded it as the Wiggles. And they still got to do the monkey? Yeah. Yeah. That's what I was thinking. That's what is that like a their transitional song? Yeah, they re-recorded it as the Wiggles
Starting point is 00:17:05 And they still got to do the monkey? Yeah, yeah, they hardly changed it at all Oh, do you actually know that song? Yeah What about, do they still do Hey What Now? No, I don't think so And they re-recorded, but she's the one A bunch of the songs they did, they reworked, changed the lyrics to make them more child-friendly
Starting point is 00:17:21 Wow So the cockroaches were like classic sort of pop band writing songs about girls and stuff. And they changed them all. Sugar, sugar, big red, cock, I mean, car! That's a much more child-friendly. I think about it. The face is so creepy.
Starting point is 00:17:37 They also guest hosted, uh, camp down three times. What? Cockroaches. As the cockroaches. As the cockroaches. They performed on there a bunch of times. What? Cockroaches. As the cockroaches. As the cockroaches. They performed on there a bunch of times, and they got posted. What? I was so that they were like a band that never got anywhere, and then somehow became
Starting point is 00:17:52 these multi-millionaires doing kid stuff. But that were actually quite... I wanted, yeah, well I was going to say I wonder why they transitioned into children's, but I bet that that's probably got the bloody answer. They had some other singles that I like the names of. I want to leather jacket and bingo bingo. So it feels like they were like seeing... I've probably got the bloody answer. They had some other singles that I like the names of. I want to leather jacket and bingo bingo. So it feels like they're worth like seeing.
Starting point is 00:18:09 It doesn't want to leather jacket. Halfway between. It's like a little bit. I want to leather, I've actually seen a whole song about it. How you want to leather the jacket, but you just, just get one. And so I went to the shop and bought one.
Starting point is 00:18:22 And I bought one. And now I've got one. Bingo Bingo. I'm a leather jacket owner. Apparently they had a great, great live show, you know, energetic and that sort of stuff sold out, sold out to us. But they, they never went huge. Sure. They weren't, they weren't mad at me. But they, they never went huge. They never were, were big outside of Australia and their popularity sort of Wained As they went on they released four albums and none of them were as successful as the first
Starting point is 00:18:53 But they did have a following so that that was when Anthony went back to uni, I guess He had to we'll start to look to the future This is one Anthony said of at university, at university there were maybe four or five guys in our course and over a four hundred women, which was a bit overwhelming. I think the bloke's got together as a bit of a bonding thing. That's what he said. Okay. So that and that handful of blokes included the musician's Murray Cook, who was the
Starting point is 00:19:24 bass player for finger guns. Oh my god. They do that sort of thing. That's just good. Yeah, which is a thing they do, which is interesting. That's so funny. And Greg Page was also studying there.
Starting point is 00:19:35 It was a roadie for the cockroaches and singer for dead giveaway. It's a bloody dead giveaway. So they're all in bands anyway. Yeah. And so they sort of got. Did they not have other things to do in the 90s? No, I was in a band. Everybody's in a fucking band.
Starting point is 00:19:50 I was in a band and that was in the 2000s. I was also in a band. Good point. I was in over 10 bands over 10 years. Were you really? Yeah. That's a lot of bands day. You have commitment issues.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Did any of the band members go on to form a big children's group? No, I am thinking of calling my group. Are my group... High five. High five. Yeah, were you in a band with one of the original high five members? Yeah. Wow. I was. Good for you. Asked no more questions. Let's move on. Alright, great. So they started... because they had this music connection, they started jamming in their lunch breaks and that sort of stuff. And that ended up turning into, they started going busking for fun. It streets the Sydney.
Starting point is 00:20:34 And they're, and Anthony brought in his brother John on guitar and Jeff Fatt, because so that they weren't in uni. So he brought great names. So great. Jeff Fatt. Obviously, the cockroach man he played accordion while I bust and during these busking sessions the group first played What would become one of their signature songs for it salad hot potato? Oh potato hot potato at start of it. Apparently start of a John just started doing a call and response thing to the crowd
Starting point is 00:21:03 Oh nice, and he he started with hot potato. I know what we'll get these crowd going. Maybe they're outside of the shop that's selling hot potatoes and the shop also sells cold spaghetti. Kelt spaghetti, cold spaghetti. Wow, I wanna go to this shop. Mashed banana, mashed banana. It's a very eclectic menu.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I can't remember what other things are on there. Ooh, wiggy wiggy. Ooh, wiggie wiggie. Oh, wiggie wiggie. Why do we know that? It's so weird that we know these songs. No, it's not. No, it's not. No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:21:32 We're all walking up at that mall in the 90s. Yeah, that's true. It was really catchy. It's been in my head for 25 years. Oh, wiggie wiggie wiggie. Oh, wiggie wiggie. During his studies, Anthony learned all about child development and how children think.
Starting point is 00:21:44 And he saw his new band as a great chance to put some of this knowledge into practice. Kids love hot potatoes. And mash bananas. Cos spaghetti, not so much, but... Interesting. And he recalls it. Two out of three A-bats. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:59 He recalls, he said, We used to wear different colored shirts, not skivvies, but we wore shirts with very busy patterns. We thought that was kind of bright. Murray Greg Jeff and I were all rock and rollers. We could put a bit of music that had rock and roll beat and also incorporate what we'd learnt about children and what they'd respond to. And that was the first Wiggles album. Wow. Yeah. Wow. Do they ever find a leather jacket?
Starting point is 00:22:28 They never did. Who at any point thought Skivis were less creepy? Like, let's, different colors is great. I think it's good to be identifiable by color. What's the top we could wear T-shirts? Polo shirts are the color, maybe a shirt. Obviously, Skivis, the most appropriate choice. Well, obviously you've never studied at Macquarie University
Starting point is 00:22:47 because Unit 1 of early childhood development is kids love skivis. You should dress like a pedophile. Is that what it is? Is that what it is? Depedifiles wear. I feel like they do. Do pedophiles have a uniform?
Starting point is 00:23:00 Because there'd be a lot easier to identify if they did. And I think it's something that we should consider. I'm not talking something that we should consider That would make things I'm okay with throwing skibbies under the bus and Sacrificing them to pedophiles for a pedophile uniform unless you want to invent a different type of clothing Specifically for pedophiles. Anyway, that's a topic for another day. suppose. What the- Oh, right. The pedophile clothing. Yeah. Well, cheery next week. And just as record.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Just as it is, yeah. It'll be in there. It'll be in there. You'll see. They needed a name for their band, and they took it from one of the songs that John Field had written. Which I think might have been another cockroach's song that was reworked and it was called Get Ready to Wiggle. Oh boy.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Oh, they are so rock and roll. Some bands do drugs, some bands wiggle. Bit of horizontal wiggle and hey baby. Oh hey what now? They thought that they they thought that we are wiggling was a good description of how young children danced Oh, I just I saw a little clip of them host guest hosting countdown And they came back from a break or whatever or from a clip and Jeff is pretend to sleep on the couch and Anthony's like Hey Wake up. No.
Starting point is 00:24:25 No shit, that's the cockroach. That's very funny. We've been doing that stick for a long time. It's a good stick. It's a good stick. Loves the sight that guy. He bloody loves it that. He loves it now.
Starting point is 00:24:34 No, but Narkalips is a serious condition. We should be more mindful of his needs. He's seriously ill. And has been for a long time. His face is so smug. The first album only costs like three or four grand And it has been for a long time. It's... Face is so smug. The first album only cost like three or four grand to record. Was that all?
Starting point is 00:24:51 And they didn't really expect it to be any sort of a hit. That was just having a good time. That went just... Doing this for the money. No. That would do it because they loved... Potatoes. Kids.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Music. Oh, sorry. And it's Skibby's not. They loved entertaining the children yeah bet they did we could say fuck oh she's turned that is that is a turn and it's I mean I imagine that that would have been a real full-on thing early days for them hey now we're cool I know you've never heard of this but let us come to your school and wiggle with your kids. Wow.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Yeah, whatever, that's a bit. But you know, like, clearly worked. It's not a matter of work. And maybe that, yeah, maybe they were the ones bold enough to do it, you know? I certainly wouldn't want to have to entertain children all the time. I'm like the worst. But I would also like to sell at 12 shows in a row at Madison Square Garden. I just like my neck to be warm.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Well, there's something in it for everybody. Guys, let's start wearing colorful skibbies. So the album was quite cheap to record. They didn't expect it to be a hit. They were just, they were thinking, I'll be stoked if it even gets released. Just want to get near some kids. Just called the wiggles like a self title.
Starting point is 00:26:03 It's called the wiggles, yeah, self title, they do. When we to get near some kids. It's called the Wiggles, like a self title. It's called the Wiggles, yeah, self title, they do. It's when we get close to some kids. They approached the ABC to see if they would release the album because at that stage probably still are though like the big children's entertainment releaseer of stuff. What's the word for the publisher? Publisher or record label or whatever.
Starting point is 00:26:24 The head of the ABC that Tom was Merrill Gross. Notice that was a great name, as I wrote it down. Merrill Gross. And as like... Miss Gross. Miss Gross. Fuck yes. So she was the head of ABC music and as like what happens she just got the job. But previously she'd worked at festival records where the cockroaches were signed.
Starting point is 00:26:47 So she already had a good relationship with them and knew that they could make a bloody hit record. It's all that he knows. We'd live with the goods. So she signed them up. At that stage, pretty much everywhere, children's entertainers tended to be solo acts and they'd been told that they were never going to make money as a band, spreading the cash across multiple performers just wouldn't work, because it just wasn't that kind of a cashier. But I get, they were like, fuck it, let's go for it, who cares, it's not about the money.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Not about the money, money, but that's not one of theirs, that's Jesse Jones. But that could be, or equals, if they said. We don't need the money, money, money, one of those that's Jesse J. But that could be, oh, we girls, if they said we don't need the money money money They said they just want to make the world But they change their site it's not about the cherries cherries cherries They're all food related, mate Food all that big red car Which can deliver the food Oh God
Starting point is 00:27:41 They in a way they created Uber Heats Uber, it's yeah. Did you guys know that Anthony's interest is food? I did, I told you that. Yeah, but I might edit that out. I just thought, I did a little more research. I could be wrong, but I'm not an I'm a such on these.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Here's a thing I've mentioned at this point. Up until this stage, there are five pieces. Yeah, I was thinking that Greg Anthony Jeff Murray and Philip Wilcher. Oh Philip will fill. Oh, no, he's the fifth beat. Oh, Phil will is the fifth After the Wiggles performed at a childcare center in Ramm. Oh, no, he says I mean appropriate was performed at a childcare center in Randall. I know, he says that I know. I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:28:24 He touched a kid. Oh, no. Why does this, this doesn't have to be about it. Oh, no, even better. He decided to quit the band to pursue a career in childcare or just like a normal accounting job. Classical music. Oh, OK.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Well, that's actually. That's a little bit more admirable than a fucking accountant. Yeah, that's true. He, apparently after, he just felt uncomfortable about performing live and resigned for the group, supposedly, because after that performance in Randwick. And that was- He's had a bad gig. This was in the weeks leading up to the release of the album.
Starting point is 00:28:59 We've all had bad gigs. Yeah, he got heckled by three hours. I've heckled and thrown me out. You know, and I've sort of left and gone, do I want to do this? No, actually, one of my West Geeks was at a childcare center. Yeah. As an Easter Bunny, genuine fact, and it was horrific and nearly got fired. What?
Starting point is 00:29:19 But I was able to convince the childcare teacher to feel sorry for me so she didn't complain about how badly it went. Oh, that's nice. So. Why was it bad? Oh, they just didn't care about the Easter money. Kids don't care about stuff like that. It must be even tough for the Wiggles now
Starting point is 00:29:35 to compete with the bloody iPads, you know what I'm saying? Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Wiggle wiggle wiggle. Fuck off, I've got an iPad, mate. I'm there, plainly, wiggle app. For the the wiggle app and that's much more interesting. It's interactive Yeah, I get to wake him up when I choose not when you bloody decide four verses in Wow Every time predictable Wiggles
Starting point is 00:29:57 So I feel Phil wills pain, but if I'd stuck as the East among the I'd probably be a million Stuckers the Easter Bunny I'd probably be a millionaire Parallel Jeff also found it a bit weird performing in front of kids You reckon it took him a couple years or took him a long time to get the language down right like Everyone else was sort of good evening Melbourne Sup fucking are you ready to fucking rock? Yeah, yeah, the time From his cockroaches keyboard days you know, you'd be like yeah, all right Yeah, what do you say hey? Yeah, what I want to let the jacket keyboard is are the coolest members of the band and I will
Starting point is 00:30:35 Nope, I think they are definitely I think they are definitely the coolest that is and it's very hard to look cool behind a keyboard No, but some people some can do it and have done it in the past. It's hard to have the same. No, it can be done. It's fine. The hardest thing about playing keyboard or piano live is, I think keyboard and piano is the most versatile instrument. But performing live, people can't see what you're doing because it's horizontal and flat.
Starting point is 00:30:59 But if you're on the drums, you can see the people hit guitar, bass, singing, you can watch them do it, but it's a very piano. An animator. An animator. And it's all you can see is just the shoulders showing up and down and that sort of weird, happy singing voice if they're doing backup singing. I'm only going off the video, I sort of Jeff Fat, playing for the color, just like, hey, no, he made it look pretty good.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Grand piano is a different thing, like rock on the ground piano can look right. Or any sort of real piano. Yeah, you have to be Nick Have looks pretty cool at times. Nick Have looks cool at all times. At all times. At all times. At all times. Piano or not.
Starting point is 00:31:38 That's true. He makes the bagpipes look cool. Which is amazing. He's got this great dance move that is no good on a podcast it was my favorite well the school commentate oh wow it's like he's putting on his backpack he's like it looks like he's putting on his back I think it looks like he's skipping on a surfboard yeah it's like he's yeah he's someone some sort of skis or something it's the best I'm not nailing it but oh man it's
Starting point is 00:32:04 my favorite move. I think you have now, because I look at you like you're a lot cooler now. Yeah, I find you a lot cooler now. You're only you played piano. The coolest instrument. As we have a set left. No, it's a very versatile instrument, but hard to be entertaining while playing. Now, but some people can and have done it in the past. Yes, what instrument did done it in the past. Jess, what instrument did you play in the band? Was it drums?
Starting point is 00:32:28 Drums are cool. Drums are cool, Jess. It's a very cool jazz. You meant drums are cool, yes. Don't be down on yourself, Jess. Drums are cool. Drums are cool. Sometimes I played tambourine when there wasn't keyboard in the band.
Starting point is 00:32:38 Oh, that's a classic thing to give to someone with nothing to do. One time, I saw a band play live and this woman had a microphone but she didn't even do backup. She just played tambourine the whole time and it felt very token. Like I want to be that woman. A professional tambourine player. Fuck yes. I hope she's getting a smaller cut because she's doing a lot less than everyone else. What's the thing? A lot of it is, this is what listening to the manager Paul Field. The brother. Yeah, he was giving advice out about music, the music bids.
Starting point is 00:33:15 And he was mentioning that often bands, like issues get created in bands when, you know, some are writing the songs so they get the publishing rights. They'll get a bigger cut of the money coming in because they've written the songs probably early days The Wiggles decided that they were gonna split at evenly No matter what so every song was a co-write mm-hmm Which he reckons is one of the one of the reasons why they've had such longevity if they haven't had Issues with yeah one of the reasons why they've had such longevity, Thavin had issues with... Yeah, that's a smart way to do it. Whether it's Greg Jeff or Jeff Gregg. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Linda McCartney, Daniel Lennon. No, we got it. We got the reference. I don't think you did. We were here for that podcast. I'd present that podcast. So we were here for that. Anyway, around the time after that dude left,
Starting point is 00:34:03 they decided it was a good chance to maybe freshen up their image, not too long for that. Anyway, around the time after that dude left, they decided it was a good chance to maybe freshen up their image, not too long after that. What better way to do that than with Skivis? What were they wearing before? These shirts. They're wearing shirts, button up shirts. There's clips you can see.
Starting point is 00:34:15 I've watched the video. But I'm not sure. It would be much better. Having a great time. No, the Skivis obviously very iconic. Very loud. Very loud. Good choice.
Starting point is 00:34:23 I think it's a block color like just you could have done that with But yeah, I don't know polish shirts T-shirts. I reckon to see the ski shirts feel more like dodgy uncle and skivis to me. Yeah, I think it's a Skivis long sleeves skivis and also they're in like they're performing an hour long show live in a long sleeve Skivis under a stage like oof. I think I think what should either be skivis or like suit jackets. Yeah, because it's got to be long sleeve because you get more color. They should have been in black skivis and berets and little round glasses and then just doing bait poetry. Speaking of skibby. Skibby. Skibby.
Starting point is 00:35:06 Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby.
Starting point is 00:35:22 Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skibby. Skib being like a theater that has a magic castle. I guess so. It's like a magic castle or something. And there's a sign out the front that says, you must be wearing a shirt and tie, or a jacket and tie.
Starting point is 00:35:35 But below that, it says, alternative is, you can wear skivis or turtlenecks, which are basically the same thing. Yeah, it's the same thing. It's just the different names. So they all wore matching turtle necks, like a brown, a greeny khaki brown. I just think of beauty.
Starting point is 00:35:53 So good, so so good, what legends. So they, I was fine when they were, but not the wiggles, so see how it is. Aunty Donna can do no wrong in my eyes. Yeah, Jess is, she's an Arni Donna completist. They would not, they could do no wrong. They can do no wrong. So they perform in a childcare center?
Starting point is 00:36:13 No problem, they'll be so fine. Oh okay. In fact, that would be a great show. Look, I'd say that's probably a bad idea. But. Yeah, probably with some of their content. Uh, in a move that rock, this is some of my finer writing it later than I. In a move that rocked the preschool music world.
Starting point is 00:36:31 They changed from wearing the bright multicolored pattern shirts to one specific, to one specified color for each wiggle. They went to a Sydney department store and each picked out a color. Murray went red Jeff went purple good choice. Greg went yellow and Anthony went blue Green excuse me There was no I should have known because you pause I should have known it was a trap. It was a trap. There's no blue Oh, they look silly green yellow red I reckon it's weird without green because you've got...
Starting point is 00:37:06 No, blue is good. It's weird purple already. It's weird to go purple before green, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Green is the next logical state. That's the fourth color. Outside of the primaries, green's got to be the next one. Yeah, that's the best secondary color, right?
Starting point is 00:37:18 So Jeff fucked it up when he picked purple, basically. I want purple off a fucksake, Jeff. For fucksake.. Blues right there. Sheesh. You fell asleep during the fitting and now you want purple. This girl. Fuck sake, fucking. Safe and fuck sake, guys.
Starting point is 00:37:34 Fuck sake, James. My beard, maybe it's a bit of a fan of the Phantom. Well, actually, one week when I was away, you talked about the Phantom being the worst superhero and I was yelling at the radio, well, it's because I was away you talked about the Phantom being the worst superhero and I was yelling at the radio Whilst because I was listening in the car. The Phantom is my personal favorite superhero Corsities. So purple actually they say there's a dashing color and Jeff So you're a great man and they do go on skivey challenge Are you gonna wear purple? Well, yeah, no
Starting point is 00:38:04 Greg Greg yeah, no Greg Greg yeah, that was always my favorite as a kid. Yeah, the front man. I loved him. I was like Anthony It was yeah, it's all right. Anthony. Which is what color blue and that was a Murray man Murray, I can't wait. Well, you can be right because he's the guitarist the cool. Yeah, he's a cool funny one So none of us like to handle a Bing of the group. He's not the funny one. He's the funny one He's very funny, but the point is none of us group. He's the funny one. He's the funny one. Is he funny? He's very funny. But the point is none of us like him. He came up with the Dorothy, the dinosaur laugh,
Starting point is 00:38:30 which I didn't know was a thing, but I read that last night. Apparently she's got an iconic laugh. Oh, it doesn't feel like, I won't try and do it. It's like a high pitch sort of gig, or she does, I think. No, try it. Come on, I don't know. Yeah, but I'll do it wrong, I don't know. But because of, so.
Starting point is 00:38:44 Is that funny, is it? Coming up with the laugh or? It's one of it. Is it many very quirky attributes? Oh, he's so funny. He's a real card. He's so funny. But he, so he's, he's, what,
Starting point is 00:38:57 they got his wife to make the Dorothy the Dinosaur outfit. He's married. And. Yeah. Bombshell. Sorry, ladies. And he, but because of of that because of the green of Dorothy the Dawn So that's why Anthony changed from green and pick blue sure. Oh see that make all right good just fine But um D. Oh, oh, oh T. H. Why my grandma's in Dorothy and that's how I learned to spell Dorothy
Starting point is 00:39:24 Dorothy the dinosaur. Fantastic. Rompompas stomp. Hey! Okay, maybe I did the wrong- See, a bit of rock and roll. Yeah, they're pretty cool. Rompompas stomp.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Hey. That was definitely a cockroach's song. Yeah, they definitely was. They self-funded a video clip for the whole first album. Like an hour long. Or several clips. Yeah, just all on the same set. Oh, wow. One take.
Starting point is 00:39:47 It's a big cut up. They had put the basic sets and costumes together themselves. Um, and I, and in this pool field interview, it was like tongue-in-cheek obviously, but it was like, I don't know what all this harp is about, beyond say,'s lemonade visual album. We did it 20 years ago. Oh, Paul. The Wiggles then began touring around Australia playing for like, you know, play group associations and mothers groups, the preschools and community.
Starting point is 00:41:33 And the mums like throwing their undies up at the stage. They drove themselves around, they were their own rodees. Did they have a van? Yeah, they got two, they were gone around with two vans. Greg in one van with the PA, and then the others in the other van with the cops and costumes. Greg is such a loma. He's like, guys, there's still two other seats up front. Ah, that's a great one.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Now Greg, you'll be right. It's like, like, this is... But there's four of you. You could just go two and two. See you there, Greg. See ya. Oh, fuck. You got... You didn't give me the address. Fuck off, Greg. But there's four of you you could just go two and two see there Greg see up You give me the address fuck off Greg You're you're a bit squished at the front there's plenty of room next to me. I've got a trace Now I'd rather share a seatbelt with Jeff then get in the cold grog. Yeah, thanks to you Greg
Starting point is 00:42:23 Thanks, but no thanks mate. That was one time! Fuck off Greg! Paul Greg. He's Greg the former Rody. Yeah, he is, yeah. So that's why they were like carried in yourself mate. Yeah. You know what you're doing. He gets their two hours before everyone else to set up. Aww.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Through those times they were playing three or four shows a day, after 26 days in a row. What? Hectic. And the shows were like around an hour long, sort of thing, so pretty full on. Can they were drinking a lot too? Because we've been on tour.
Starting point is 00:42:51 Yeah, most of still being. We know what tour was a bloody lot. Yeah, and they would have been in their 20s still. Yeah. They think the cockroaches were a band for about nine years, so I. They knew what they were doing, I suppose. Anthony must have, he must have been,
Starting point is 00:43:05 he must have started that band very young. He doesn't seem that old now. I thought we're only in the mid 40s. No, that doesn't add up to it. No, it doesn't. Jeff is much older than the others. He's in his 60s. Yeah, he's kidding. Yeah, it's amazing. I feel like Anthony might be 50 years old. I think they're all in there mid 50s. Right. Yeah, there's a little bit of that. You know what, he's still a massive boat. One of five. Anthony. What the fat?
Starting point is 00:43:29 Ooh, yeah. Anthony. A big, a big blue. Blue. Okay. I struggle with the names. Sure. Blue is called a glade.
Starting point is 00:43:40 Yeah, call him Hot Wiggle. Hot Wiggle, blue. Hot blue, wiggle. Whoa. Each year they would release a new video and album I mean, I call him Hot Wiggle. Hot Wiggle, blue. Hot blue, wiggle. Each year they would release a new video and album and then tour for about 10 months on the back of it. I see. That's incredible. That's exactly what Beyonce does.
Starting point is 00:43:54 She releases an album, videos and tours. They really did set the precedent. Yeah, come on, Beyonce. Or rip off. For Beyonce. Oh, she's here at you, she's. She's done Beyonce. I hate how people think that she's some sort of visionary.
Starting point is 00:44:05 She's done nothing original. Oh my god. They performed to children and her first band was called Destiny's Child. Oh my god, you're right. It all lines up. You're right, Dave. When you're right, you're right. Thank you. She had that big song. Hot potato. Hot potato. Yeah. Wow, they put it on the map. It's what got Jay's interested. Oh, the culture begins. Oh, the culture begins. Yes, yes, yes. Oh, the culture begins.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Put a red car on. Put a red car on. I feel like a then you should have put a big red car on it, yeah, doesn't work. So, and they started doing even more than one album a year like they'll pump it amount Funny that yeah, anyway, they Proudly In 1994 in one two of they performed 63 shows in 17 days. No No, thank you
Starting point is 00:45:00 Greg was on his own the whole time It's very stupid like I would fart I would not talk to him Greg was on his own the whole time. It's very sad. He would fart all the time. They would not talk to him. They would reject these calls. He'd stay in a separate hotel. No, he'd stay in a hotel. And they'd stay in a hotel.
Starting point is 00:45:18 He'd stay in a caravan. Sleep in the bed with the pee. We can't be sure that it'll be safe. You can just sleep in the bed with the P.I. Mate, we just we can't be sure that it'll be safe. You just leave your bed at that you stay here. Yeah, better just be safe. We can't afford Account afford any security Maybe you you guys could sleep in a four-star hotel and set a five-star and we get a four security We could mate. I wish we could you know that's not how children entertainment works hands are tied Hey, did you guys know that the original big red car video featured a big red car made of plywood constructed by Jeff? No
Starting point is 00:45:54 Great fact great fact Matt. Did you write? He wrote fact in capital letters. Is it no explanation? No, I know it explain I can feel like he's set it with an exclamation point That was a flat that was a flat fact How'd I finger that looked a lot like an exclamation point? I feel like everything I say has an exclamation and that's all right You write a lot of exclamation of all the time and then sometimes I just write little compliments in there for myself just to read like hey Jesse, you're doing a really good job. I just like halfway through the podcast. I just see a little notes like hey Keep on working a little superstar. You're a human-wave sunshine. I'm like, thanks
Starting point is 00:46:26 past me. That is a great tactic for keeping up. I don't actually do that. That's really nice. Yeah. Can I just say, so they've released multiple albums, and we can still own the name about three songs. All albums, like, full fresh track listing?
Starting point is 00:46:41 They do, they do a lot of traditional songs like re-workings But yeah, what do you mean traditional like in advances? I feel like they did like twinkle little star. I don't know. I feel like they did it. I was one bit stuff like they did a version of Octopus's garden because I have Henry the octopus And it might be Henry it sings it maybe yeah, so they do cool stuff. Maybe one about Yeah, so they do cool stuff. They do one about the roosters and ducks. Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, I do italy do. I had a one. It's funny that I've all these songs. Every time I start, let me know. Back in my hand. Brain washed. Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, qu Yeah, I settled to her. At first the four Wiggles would play all the characters in their shows
Starting point is 00:47:45 Murray would play Dorothy the dinosaur. Low Jeff would be Henry the octopus and Anthony played Wags the dog and Captain Fed this so they didn't trust Greg with a second character Greg just look after the PA mate you the sound man Well Anthony's got two characters. I mean the front man, you're the sound man Anthony's got two characters I mean I could that's a lot of pressure on him I could do one of them Dave Greg can you just you think you could you think you could do wags and dog cover Hey boys You great Greg Greg Greg Greg is he can do wags. Yeah, no you're I'll just I'll just mind the p
Starting point is 00:48:19 You're a funny fucker aren't you Greg you're a piece of shit, but you're a funny fucking Greg, you sticky bus. You are this close to being kicked out of the band of just being the mixing man, all right? If you're like evil, let your mix. Your second character is the PA security guard. And the hair's no lines. So aggressive. If you didn't have such a beautiful god damn singing voice
Starting point is 00:48:42 Greg, you'd be out on your ear. Oh my god, you do things to be out on your ear. Oh my god You do things to me when you sing though. Oh wow Eventually this was proving to be a bit bit much so they brought in a man named Paul Paddock Paul Paddock Paul was Wappa trained. Oh hello. Oh, you know, why were you Western Australian performing arts? He's a he's a trained actor. Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. So he was obviously qualified to be a dinosaur
Starting point is 00:49:10 in a pirate or whatever. Did you write it like that too? I did. Although he was told that he'd have plenty of time to rehearse his roles, he basically, they got to the venue tonight before us. It's a bit late. We'll run through it with you tomorrow before we go.
Starting point is 00:49:27 And then sort of gave him a quick run through and then I was just, shows on. Impro. And he's. And he was just like having to keep up like, ah, ah, ah, madog. That's so great. He never met the other three. Oh my gosh. They wouldn't let him get Greg because he probably wouldn't have been in the band if he'd
Starting point is 00:49:43 met Greg. Probably would have been like, oh, who's this dickhead? He let him be the leader? No, thank you. But then Greg would start singing and he'd be like, I understand. Oh, I need a couple of minutes. I need a culture. I'll be in my hotel room.
Starting point is 00:50:00 I'll be in my hotel six. Anthony has since said that Paul came back, maybe a stone lighter, which I think his old days talk for weight. Yes. But he loved the existence. He's definitely a measurement. Yeah. He had a pocket full of stones.
Starting point is 00:50:15 He dropped the dance though out at one of them fell out. But he loved the experience. And the boy said to me, we got a keep in. He's really funny in a spain bloody brilliant ever since. Oh, that's what Anthony says. So does he actually play all the characters? No, he plays Wags. He plays, no, he plays, I think he's the part, I think he's the, I think he does a bit of everything, but now I think now they've all got their own actor. Yeah. But did he perform with them for a long time and but came like so he's like a he is the fifth wiggle in some ways I guess
Starting point is 00:50:48 yeah depending on what you mean by fifth wiggle he's the George Martin fifth wiggle whereas Nigel classical music guy whatever his name was Philip I think it was not a Philip no no Philip Williams was a Philip Williams. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil Will. Phil the wheels were performing 500 shows a year in Australia. That is insane. Does that mean they're doing it two as well? Yeah including two as stuff. No but do you mean like they're going overseas as well? Oh no. At this stage it was nearly all still in Australia. That's multiple shows a day. Greg was saying that this is a quote from Greg. Oh, you can't be trusted. I wouldn't fully... I mean if you could take this with a grain of salt.
Starting point is 00:51:50 Yeah, grain of salt. But he blocking us as well we go. Stinky Greg. I was like, shit. That's awful. He gets sick. He goes, we might play three shows in let's go one day. Three the next in Bathurst. Four shows in Dubbo, then the same in Young and Griffith. That's very interesting, quote, classic Greek. In a day. No, this is each day. Yeah, each day, like, they're going town to town. They're doing 20 shows in a day.
Starting point is 00:52:16 No, no, but I mean, I know I didn't exactly like 14 shows. Yeah, each of those tops in a day, yeah. So one after the other, just go into a town and just smash an out. But you can, because it's children, so you can start, you can do a 10 AM show. It's true. 12, 2, 4, out. They're basically working like real people.
Starting point is 00:52:33 Doing a job. Come on, Greg. Come on, Greg. No, wait. No, no, no, no. What's your skinny Greg saying? But it was saying, and then in Griffith, they sold out four shows of a thousand people
Starting point is 00:52:46 So that's not gonna play it a big. Oh, so it's not like they're like well We've got to keep going because we only sold thirty tickets to the grinding it out there. They'd be making good money Yeah, that's incredible. Why would you need to put it that? I'm not yeah, that's the thing like they're lucky because you can't do that with comedy because like you can't do comedy at 11 a.m Trust me So you do like the can't do comedy at 11 a.m. Trust me. So you do like the most we would do. I do have the bra. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:53:07 The most we would do on tour would be two shows and you'd have like a 6 p.m. and a 9 p.m. And like one show is exhausting. Doing tour really killed me. And how many minutes did you do? Oh, 15 minutes. These guys are doing like four, one hour shows. And they're kids.
Starting point is 00:53:22 And they jump around and see. And they jump around and see. No break for these kids. I walked a couple of meters because I like to move around the stage a bit. That's, I can't even, that's insane. No wonder Greg's not like shit. Yeah, I mean, but the others, that doesn't make it. So I kept it clean.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Yeah, I don't work that hard, but I smell great. Just a couple little squirts. Just a couple of squirts on in your pit, so you're Greg. They wouldn't let Greg have deodorant. Oh, that's probably... Well, it's their own fault, isn't it? Yeah. So I think it's like...
Starting point is 00:53:48 But the touring kicked off album sales to another level, because they were... They were selling merch at the gig. They were selling... They were selling Dorothy Tiles. Dorothy Hats. Yes. Types CDs, and they'd just bring...
Starting point is 00:54:02 They'd lug around some suitcases for... Oh, sorry. I'll tell you that. You mean Greg would lug around some suitcases for sorry I'll tell you they mean Greg with Luckarounds some suitcases but their albums are certainly like go off they they hit gold platinum slash multi platinum status in Australia platinum is 70,000 units so multiple of that that's amazing um they surround this time they were trying to get themselves onto the TV as well. ABC was sort of showing some of those clips
Starting point is 00:54:31 that they had filmed. They were building up such a big audience and they created and self-funded. This is something they also talk about. They always self-fund. They never borrow money to make things or cut deals. So someone else has creative control and that was something that they'd learnt from the cockroaches days where they're one of
Starting point is 00:54:49 their labels was overreaching a bit and making them you know go in directions they didn't necessarily want to they didn't want to be slaves to the man yeah good on him good on him which is yeah kind of a thing but it also it means you get a lot more money back that's right you get all of it. I don't think we'd take that sort of approach though. Like if anybody wanted to give us money to do this, we'd be like, yeah, whatever you want. Yeah, yeah, I want a skibi.
Starting point is 00:55:15 Wanna put one? I'd wear a skibi. I think I was being paid. Fuck yeah. You got it. Fuck yeah. No questions asked. Skibi me up.
Starting point is 00:55:23 I've, I've want to skivim for free before. Hey. We've got a couple in our costume area. We made a sketch where we were all wearing skivis. And we were talking, we were talking about Turtle Necks. Great. The Turtle Neck is a beautiful piece of fashion. You got to hold out.
Starting point is 00:55:41 That was very, I probably did it for free. Evan, uh, I'm, again, talking about stuff we're going to cut it out, but Evan was like... Never... you know, he'd normally very quickly cut together sketches. He just... it was always on the bottom of the pile. I'm not even sure if it ever got cut together. It was very fun in a while, anyway. Um, what the fuck... oh yeah, so... So yeah, they were keen to get a TV show together. They self-funded one in 98,
Starting point is 00:56:07 which got interest from Channel 7, they broadcast it and also on the Disney Channel, which had just launched here in Australia. Wow. And then from there, things started happening in America. The show was broadcast with Fox Kids and then they started to perform in some theme parks in the USA but apparently a lot of those early audiences were tiny like they'd rather they would perform sometimes in car parks just a small handful of audience members which would be so weird but big somewhere else and then go on there. Hey look at me. Trust me we're pretty good. Yeah bring your kids. I think they'd probably blamed Greg
Starting point is 00:56:46 They're not doing our self promotion Like Greg why hadn't you put a shit up on YouTube on what fucking Doesn't exist yet. Yeah, you've always got excuses Said that about hoverboards last week The face of shit and non-ing on there last week. The... The... The...
Starting point is 00:57:04 The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The...
Starting point is 00:57:12 The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The...
Starting point is 00:57:20 The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... The... crowds but starting to build them up a little bit and in Australia they were still touring everywhere. Like right through the tiny towns that no one else would go and just packing out you know the little country venues. When they went back to America the wheels, Jeff's, tell me the rum wing. When they went back to America they performed at Disneyland which we talked about in the past,
Starting point is 00:57:48 and we're filmed for a TV special in Australia. So that we're over there, but it was for Australian TV. It's still way bigger here than that one or anything else. But in the crowd, that day were executives from the Lyric Studios, which is a Texas-based studio. And the boss president at the time, Debbie Rice. I like the cut of your gyms, son. That's so good.
Starting point is 00:58:14 She said, there was an audience, no, that's okay. Nope. Someone did you say something? Yeah, you've been prized by two separate people about your accent from last time. Yeah, and they said it was a Minnesota accent, which I definitely agree with. Yeah, great. I did watch Beverly Hills when I was a kid So and the two characters move from Minnesota sure sure all right
Starting point is 00:58:34 So the Texan lady she said there was an audience of American children mostly that had never seen the wiggles before and they immediately got up and started dancing and interacting with the music. That's when I knew for sure. We had something that would be really big. Poo, poo, poo. And she's just shot into the air. And all the kids run away. That's Simpson's Texas guy. So following the Disneyland appearance, the Wiggles were signed to Lyric Studios, which
Starting point is 00:59:02 was also the home of a little guy called Barney the Friendly Dinosaur. Oh, can you remember that? Yeah. I like me. Yes. I like me. I like the best that I can be.
Starting point is 00:59:18 Two plus two is four. I can see why this is so popular. So yeah, which was huge for them obviously. And interestingly, obviously the USA is sort of the home of entertainment, Hollywood and everything's over there. And traditionally they did not care for international preschool shows. They apparently, Thomas the Tank Engine, Thomas the Tank Engine, they took that on,
Starting point is 00:59:49 but they totally re-voiced it. They took out Ringo Stales' voice and put it in American. The fact of control. Oh, like I don't think the kids here are gonna be able to understand what that English accent is all about. The same with Bob the builder apparently
Starting point is 01:00:05 Bob the builder can we Never even watch Bob the book. Do they is it's a voice? It's an English girl. Yeah. Yes Got a Henry and I only Gavna. He's he never says Gavna. Oh, I'm remembering it funny Already say Gavna, but he's a tr. So there was there was talk that maybe they'd somehow Dubbed or something into American, but that'd be amazing. The way the wiggles they they From there I'm experiencing so like as long as they can understand as the children won't give a shit about the accent Wiggles stay true to themselves and they self-funded their accents and then yeah once the once the wiggles got out into the American Kid kid public
Starting point is 01:00:51 Kid public they yeah, they got right anywhere. They bloody loved it. I think that's kind of it's weird that like American Like big wigs are like, but the Americans won't understand you. It's like you I'm talking to you Yeah, you will you do not understand me look. I'm not getting any of it Do you I mean could we get a translator in we don't need to try to I can understand you perfectly I'm so sorry. Hey, you look like a lovely person But these noises you're making are very confusing me But kids seem to love them. They do. They love the... Sugar, sugar, big red car.
Starting point is 01:01:27 What does that mean? What does that mean? Big red car. I don't know. I've never seen one of those. It's interesting. Well, is that some sort of kangaroo? I love these characters that you've created.
Starting point is 01:01:36 Also, Dave's yours is quite sassy. Yeah, okay. Is it a woman? Uh, I don't know what you just said to me, but I think the tone was offensive. So I'm gonna stop you right there. Take you to take a chill pill, a chillax, she'll be taken, and then maybe we can do business. Okay.
Starting point is 01:01:53 Okay. These bloody broods from down under. I mean, she is Louise. Oh, do you want to be rich? Come on. I want some of this American chitching. Have you heard of the Dorothy? I mean, not Dorothy, you know?
Starting point is 01:02:05 And I'll die in the song. What's the purple one? Barney. Barney. Yeah, okay, I understood that word because that's our word. That's our word. Don't you take our word, okay? Barney.
Starting point is 01:02:14 Okay, you take that back. Oh my god, that's our word for you. Barney. And sing. It's a lyric kind of mantra and it was, if I see them, they will love them so So we had fucking mantra. They said that's everything. Yeah, I said that there was American Fuck yeah
Starting point is 01:02:38 So they were keen and they They just they believe that I came for pain that we came for pain oh my goodness so that sweet Jeff fat pain but they were gonna they wanted to connect they wanted to hook the wiggles to the Barney freight train because Barney was huge sure and that's what they did so they they tacked on wiggles clips to the start of episodes of Barney or whatever so the Barney videos would have a pre-roll not pre-roll But whatever back then whatever the olden days thing was a pre-roll and that that worked really well And I meant you know the kids were loving the hot potato. They want a more of our potato So it doesn't once you have one hot potato
Starting point is 01:03:17 You're like cool one. I just got hungry for potato. I'm just hungry in general Um, and then they started getting them to be a live support for Barney at his live shows. So in the intermission, which there's an intermission at the Barney shows, they would play in that. Kids got a pee. Went off. Do they, I mean, I'd imagine an intermission at a kids show would be very difficult. Yeah, that'd be no good. All right, everybody.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Well, it's not really an intermission if you're just going to plug it with more entertainment, is it? It's just like, I guess as Barney gets to go and ring out is... You know Barney gets hoes it down. Yeah, Barney, that would be awful, I can't imagine. Get lost, damn. There's a big bucket of ice out the back. Prepare the Barney house, do the people that wear those suits often wear ice-fests underneath? Really? They're pretty cool, yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:05 Apparently the barnie to a sold 60,000 tickets. So there was like a lot of people saw them. 60,000. What a new kids. For a lot. I guess all kids are new in a way, aren't they? Wow, that's beautiful. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:04:22 So after that season, two Wiggles videos shot to number one, and number two, top two, and the Amazon charts. And then Walmart started stocking the Wiggles videos. And yeah, that was when they really kicked off over there. They started headlining their own shows from then in America. And during one of these first tours, the New York Times first wrote about them. And the quote was, they called them the band that rocks the cradle. Which is cool.
Starting point is 01:04:57 Yeah, it is cool, but it's like... They took the day off after that headline. The references to it like a horror film, right? Or like a, anyway. The hand that Roxas Crater was like a weird movie where a woman tried to steal a baby or something. Alright. Oh yeah, and they also got included in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Which makes a huge thing and a big deal millions and millions of people see it.
Starting point is 01:05:24 Wow. Apparently, the red that millions of people see it. Wow Paling read that millions of people see it live. I can't be right I think they'd line the streets quite a bit millions of people that's televised So is it televised? It is tell yeah, but live they said and tens of millions watch it on TV millions watch it live No, thank you. Oh, crap. That's that happens. No good. No, that would be so anxious.
Starting point is 01:05:47 The things are still going great back at home in Australia, in 98 in Adelaide, a shopping center appearance made TV news because it had to be cut short because of dangerously large cradles. For a shopping center. Yeah, the Wiggles. That's amazing. Hey Jess Arck And you might have had some involvement in this is a nine-year-old in 1999 Anthony Field was crowned Clio Bachelor of the Year. Mm-hmm remember I was yesterday you voted Oh mama, he's hot
Starting point is 01:06:19 He was already hot and now he's like a salt and pepper because he's a bit older And he was Bachelor of the Year. Yeah, what a weird, that same scratch. You know that you can have a boyfriend, don't girlfriend, and still be nominated. You just can't be married. Yeah, not married. Yeah. So he could have been in a relationship for 10 years and his girlfriend could have been,
Starting point is 01:06:38 no, no, he's the Bachelor. Yeah, that's a weird thing. That's a very old school thing that I'm talking about, like, but marriage still... Now, he's still available because he's not married. Yeah. Technically. And that is where Beyoncé was inspired by her song.
Starting point is 01:06:52 I think this paragraph must have been, like, this is from the Paul Field thing, I think. And I think it must have been written a few years ago. And you probably, I think you might realize why. A duet album was released called It it's a wiggly wiggly world, which saw the wiggles perform with some of their dearest friends. Some of their dearest friends. Oh no, it's like Princess Diana.
Starting point is 01:07:13 A Australian country legend, some dusty, Jimmy Little, Camel, Christina Arnoux, and Ralph Harris. Okay. Oh no. Oh. Some of the dearest friends. Ralph Harris. Okay. Oh no. Oh. Some of the dearest friends. Ralph Harris. Imagine you don't want to still associate yourself with that. Or Slim Dusty.
Starting point is 01:07:31 No, he's a legend. Yeah. And yeah. Was a legend. Was a legend. I'd love to have a beer with Duncan. I'd love a hibiscus beer with Duncan. He's a fun.
Starting point is 01:07:42 He's a fun. What's drinking moderation? And we's a fun, was drinking moderation. And we never, ever, ever get rolling drunk. We drink at the town in country. Is that the atmosphere? Is that great? I love to be with Duncan. Because Duncan's me mate.
Starting point is 01:07:58 I know every word to that song. I don't know why but I do. Didn't even know that was some dusty. Yeah. Yeah it is, okay great. Then he likes to have a beer with Patrick. I guess so. Like to have a beer with Pat.
Starting point is 01:08:09 They drink him moderation. It wouldn't even matter if the beer was flat. I wanna drink with Slim. It's so good. The best one is Robert. And he gets a lot of beer with Robert. Love to have a beer with Bob. We drink him moderation.
Starting point is 01:08:24 He goes really cheeky. He goes, just one more and back on the job. He's so cheeky. What a cheeky. What a lyricant. What a cheeky lyricant. Just one more. Alright, it's leaving.
Starting point is 01:08:35 In the early, sorry Jess. Not at all. One of these other big hit was, probably with no beer. It's all about beer with him. Nothing sadder. Dreary your clip. No, that's not.
Starting point is 01:08:50 I don't know that one as well. There's nothing so, I don't know. Here, as a half minute. Where the pub would no B. That's great. I reckon people in Ohio would really love slim. Yeah, I think they can really relate to our Australian pub music. pub music, it's the whole industry out here.
Starting point is 01:09:09 We'll see how the Wiggles got started. Well the Wiggles were a pub rock band. That's true. We're going to have podcasts that go even better. We're going to go even better overseas that we dubbed it. Yeah, I think you should just speak in those accents sometimes. I think people overseas like to listen just from just sort of relaxing relaxing sound Yeah it's just the soundscape
Starting point is 01:09:34 Oh the laugh is not relaxing for the There's got a jolting. I think that was a bird Yep there it is Oh it's a peaceful river with a bird. And a really, really low sound coming from the other microphone. A bumble. So the Wiggles started doing a lot of curl labs. They worked with other. Oh, Missy Elliott.
Starting point is 01:10:01 In the early 2000s. The police. In the early 2000s, I got together ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha and apparently Steve Terry and Bindi were big fans of the Wiggles. Oh wow, yeah. Other big fans, there's heaps and a lot of them like will come to the shows apparently and then you know with their kids obviously. Yeah. Like James Hetfield from Metallica. Apparently he came one time and Murray spotted him in the crowd so he started playing
Starting point is 01:10:41 Anderson Man riff and then James Hetfield got up and gave him the other kids like that's so cool um Robert De Niro came in and wanted to meet them after a show on time you wiggling at me you wiggling at me I'm wiggling at me! That's so funny. Wouldn't you love to have that sort of star power where you could be like, um, I want to meet him. And they're like, yeah, no, sure, absolutely. I'd love that. Be fun.
Starting point is 01:11:12 It would be. Actually, no, I hate that. It's a lot of pressure. I'd like Robert De Niro to want to meet me. Yeah. I'm Wiggle-iddy! Yeah, imagine. That would have, apparently, um, apparently Anthony, after that, Anthony went to one of the other
Starting point is 01:11:27 weeklies, he's like, yeah, this is great. It's probably going to make the next song we made at home in a way, star a little less exotic. Oh yeah, no. Good call. When they back in Australia, they received the Aria's outstanding achievement award. Wow. Australian recording industry awards.
Starting point is 01:11:50 Association. In association. I thought it was a Bria area. It would be the award awards. Anyway. I'm so hungry. I'm so hungry. In 2005, Dream World on the Gold Coast, Australia's own Disney Land.
Starting point is 01:12:08 Well! Opened... Yeah, Disney Land, but better. Yeah, yeah. It's got the giant drop. What? I love Disney Land. Actually.
Starting point is 01:12:16 I've only ever been to Disney Land. Dream World has tigers to be fair. What tigers? But I've been to two Disney lands, and they were much better. Yeah. Then Dream World. They're so much better. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World.
Starting point is 01:12:29 They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World.
Starting point is 01:12:37 They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so much better than Dream World. They're so world inside of Dream World.
Starting point is 01:12:45 Yes. And they did it. And it features... What a twist! One story short. They got off it a lot of cash and said, hell yeah. Wiggles world features a big red car, right? Dorothy's rosy teacup rhodochis.
Starting point is 01:12:58 That's adorable. Is it still there? Yeah. I don't remember seeing it last time. I was there, but you probably, because as you go as an adult, you don't look for the really kitty stuff. The SS feather sword, like a boat, I guess. Is it still like Greg Smelly Kingdom? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:14 Just a really smelly room. It's out the back. That's the janitor's closet. Yeah, it's got a big PA though. Huge. Beautiful sand, basic, big, basic sand. Um, yeah, so that's kind of cool. I did hear, like I was reading an interview with all of them
Starting point is 01:13:29 and they were talking about how they don't ever put their name just things they don't believe in. Ugh. They put it there. They're the S.S. They're the sort of love. They're a real life crusty, the clown, right? They just put their name is on everything.
Starting point is 01:13:43 Yeah. At least in Australia. But they're only healthy things, like yoghuts and fruit juices and stuff. But fruit juices aren't that healthy. I don't know that healthy, but still they... It's better than a soft drink. Yeah, I guess so.
Starting point is 01:13:57 So they definitely, they don't do anything that's particularly bad, but they... So they want to do like, Wiggles radiation cans. Yeah, I think they... I wonder if there's... They said no to the... I wonder if there's ever been a Wiggles McDonald's colab.
Starting point is 01:14:10 Yeah, I feel like that would mean... That would... That would make a wire of them. I don't think so. I don't think they'd go to that sort of stuff. Maybe the toys. Oh, yeah, actually mate. Oh, I'm really not sure.
Starting point is 01:14:23 I don't think so. They started... They tested out the idea of franchising the band They and they thought the best way to do it is in a small market. So they went to Taiwan and put together a band who performed in Mandarin And it was quite successful. They also put together a Spanish speaking band of based Australians But to a South America. Wow. And both went quite well, but in the end they decided, and the feedback they got internationally
Starting point is 01:14:53 was that they quite liked their videos, and the non-English speaking markets just dubbed their voices into the local language, but left the songs in English. Oh sure. And so all of them is like an educational thing, helping teach the kids English. I reckon it's probably a bit like how we tried to have Australian top gear, you know, like it's not the same. It's sort of same. You can't capture that chemistry. Yeah, because they just didn't seem like massive fuckheads.
Starting point is 01:15:24 Yeah. I didn't say it, I they just didn't seem like massive fuckheads. Yeah. I didn't I didn't say that I assume they didn't they probably needed to do more of that. Um, they got referenced a lot because they really got into as Paul Field said they really became part of the zeitgeist. And they realized this one they were just getting referenced on all sorts of shows. They've been referenced on ER, the West Wing scrubs, how I met your mother, two and a half men, family guy, six feet under, arrested development, Saturday Night Live, Kath and Kim, and movies such as Knocked Up, Lapas we know it, and just like
Starting point is 01:15:59 haven't. And the Wiggles movie. And the Wiggles movie they also. Which is a masterpiece they also appeared as themselves Obviously on shows like the view entertainment tonight today show Jimmy Kimmel showed the late late show a Craig Ferguson The panel enough rope That's the prize. Yeah, the panel is a great show. Wow I want a good chair Greg the yellow wiggle started battling with health issues. Oh, no Told you that at the start he um he apparently even from 92 he was having bouts of tiredness
Starting point is 01:16:33 Okay, well what that's a surprise when you're doing 600 shows a week Yeah, but more than the others. Yeah, that's true, but he ended up catching up with him and he was diagnosed with a few different things But yeah, it was like it affected his balance He ended up catching up with him and he was diagnosed with a few different things but yeah it was like it affected his balance. Yeah he was but on well for a while. And he's a quote from Greg at the time. This emotional decision was one which was very difficult as I've dedicated almost half my life to the Wiggles and with a question mark over my health I feel that this is the
Starting point is 01:17:02 right decision. I wish the guys continued success and welcome Sam Moran with open arms into the yellow skivvy I know he's a great performer is well equipped to be the yellow wiggle and I hope the other guys will talk to him what they didn't talk to me Which was not I thought that was nice. Yeah Of course, they did that would be imagine how hard it would be taking over. Yeah, that was and he and Sam Moran He's been around. He was like the understudy for Greg for quite a while So he'd been around. He knew it all But he was worried about yeah, like that's how big of the operation was
Starting point is 01:17:41 But he was worried about how the kids were gonna take to him. Yeah You know, he said mo at help the video that had Greg handing over the yellow skivvy helped explain to a lot of him. And he said most of them got it sort of. And also, they have a new generation of fans every like three years, because it's like a certain amount of window where you are a big, big Wiggles fan genuinely. And now obviously, I would say that,
Starting point is 01:18:03 I think the Wiggles are cool but I'm not there. I also think target market. I think the thing with like being a fan of something as an adult is that you do get quite fanatical and you would like research and you know things about all the performers and stuff and so you do get really attached to them. I think with kids they're just kind of like that cool. Another dude just.
Starting point is 01:18:21 Yeah he sings a song. Yeah they're just playing the fun music and I like to dance and he seems nice like I don't think they're gonna be like no no no no no no no you're not Greg Wait, you're not Greg. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no But apparently it was pretty brutal for Sam. Apparently they like he was known as the Salarid Wiggle. All of the other ones were partners in the company. He was just getting a wage. So they're all earning millions a year. His wage was like, you know, it was $200,000 a year, but he like they would sort of never fully welcomed into the band as a full member. So they drive the Eastern Martin's to the gig and he's still the other bus. Yeah, but I'm like he's earning 200,000 a year, but still wow point though. Shit. He's not getting a cut of all there. Yeah, but why should he didn't create it? Well, I mean, if you think of it as a band, if you
Starting point is 01:19:16 join a band, that's how it normally works. Yeah, but he's joining a business. He's joining, they're more of, yeah. So, this stage there, in international business. Which is fun, but like making fun of him for it is like some sort of, it's like a soft form of bullying. Yeah. But he, you mean the other members made fun of him? Yeah, apparently. Oh, shit. Oh, I think the press was told you know, yeah. They're like, hey, celery man.
Starting point is 01:19:41 Yeah. I own you. Dance, PE. It's a Greg. And Greg was obviously a full member, but to leave, he decided to be bought out. From his show, and he got, so he got bought out for $20 million. Wow. Five years later, he was feeling healthy
Starting point is 01:19:57 and he wanted to join the band back again, and he did. And that's when some stuff came out, like about the, you know, the celery, like nicknames and stuff like that Oh, so come on And it sounded like Anthony sounded pretty cold around this time and and his brother Paul has said that this is the only time that they really felt Backlash as a band and their whole career. This was the only time they really felt like You know, they said apparently it was a really tough time you know, they said, apparently it was a really tough time.
Starting point is 01:20:29 Apparently Anthony Field in an interview dismissed Sam as just a hired hand. Why are you asking about him? He's just a hired hand. What Sam does now is Sam's thing. His contractors come to an end. Sam was just doing a job. He was a hired hand. I haven't spoken to him.
Starting point is 01:20:43 Don't why are you asking me about him, so I don't want to speak for a guy. I haven't spoken to him. Don't why you're asking me about it, I'm sorry. I don't want to speak for a guy. I don't know how he feels. So he's just, yeah, pretty cold. It sounds like maybe he was a bit fed up with questions. I don't know necessarily, but it's like, oh, that's not good PR for a big multi-million dollar company. And for Greg to come back, did he have to buy his way back in?
Starting point is 01:21:05 It's been paid out. So was he now on a wage? I think yeah, I think that's what happened to him as well. So he was, he was just back in on a salary. I was more than $200,000 a year because if you just been paid 20 million, you'd probably be like, well, I probably don't have to do this anymore. So the years after Greg got back in the band, the popularity was starting to decline a little bit. Like their income was still millions a year and they're still on the BRW Australian entertainers' rich list right up towards the top. But the money was shrinking here after year. And something they've sort of mentioned was like, they were making 20 plus million dollars a year, but that was like the gross amount. You know, there's a lot of, they've got a big staff.
Starting point is 01:21:54 They've got to pay for all the touring, you know, a bus. And there's a lot of expenses to go out as well. I was saying, even some of the years where they were bringing in 20 plus million, they were making a loss some years. What? Years they were bringing in 20 plus million they were making a loss some years what years are investing and in I guess the... Gotta spend money and make money baby. Exactly baby. That if they baby.
Starting point is 01:22:14 Oh baby. That's gross. You asked for it. I did. So daddy. Feel dirty. Look at baby. Who shot itself? Yep. Feel dirty. Baby. Like a baby.
Starting point is 01:22:26 Who shot itself? Yep. Yeah, exactly. So as they were starting to decline, some of the original members, so we're back to the original four and they were starting to think about the future. They're getting a bit older. Jeff was pushing towards 60 and he and Murray decided that it was time. Greg wasn't ready.
Starting point is 01:22:48 He'd only just come back to the band for a little while. And they wanted to leave. What a surprise. What a surprise. Hey guys, I'm back. Yeah, we just discussed it. We're out. We're done.
Starting point is 01:22:58 You're the Wiggles, Greg. You are the Wiggles. So... Wiggles on. It's a big Greg eventually decided that if the other two were leaving, it was best to do it all at the same time. And Anthony's like, oh, fucking hell. Well, Anthony, it feels like, in this research, it feels like Anthony is the band kind of.
Starting point is 01:23:16 He brought on his brother to manage, like they, I think they're really the core of the operation. But he, I think they also also thought it would be best to have one of the original members to sort of transition. And the replacement purple, red, and yellow wiggles for the first time, the new yellow wiggle was a lady. Oh, and it's Emma? Emma Watkins. Emma. Then there's also Simon Pearson Lockland Gillespie locklands so now wake up Jeff is wake up lucky I'm lucky Wake up lucky
Starting point is 01:23:53 Chains day names legally to Jeff Of them it should be Greg. I'm Jeff. I'm Jeff. I'm Jeff. I'm Jeff. Okay. They're all Jeff Jeff They do like a harmonizing Jeff like That's why we're not a band Yes So and did they bring them more success and yeah, there's been a bit of a bounce in popularity that sort of stuff. We're just smart. I mean, it's you know their for kids that were getting in popularity that sort of stuff. We're just smart. I mean it's you know different kids they were getting
Starting point is 01:24:30 they needed a freshen it up a bit. And is Anthony still there? Anthony's still there. Till this very day. And it didn't um I think two of them got married. I think Emmer and Lockie got married. Emmer and Lockie? Really? Do they talk about that on the wiggles? That was pretty much kept a secret for a long time. It was very recently. They got married. But it is the purple and yellow wiggle. Yeah, so locky and Emma. Yeah, I'm missing. They had a secret love affair for two years. But now they're out and proud. I think they have an a kid. Oh really? I think they have an a baby wiggle. Oh my god, baby wiggle. You're gonna have purple and yellow make. Who's the color? Brown. Brown. Who brown? I was just appropriate because baby shit a lot. Okay. What about, are they also... Are they also on a wage? Yeah, so they're all salary. So the business is still run by those three...
Starting point is 01:25:28 The three guys are still running the show. They're the three partners. Oh, the Greg and... Oh, not Greg. And... Greg's gone. You're talking about $20 million bucks you got paid for. You're talking about they still have barbecues together?
Starting point is 01:25:44 Like, are they mates? I think they're still mates, yeah. You can lay all sorts of like- 2 million bucks you got paid for, like- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of-
Starting point is 01:25:52 You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of-
Starting point is 01:26:00 You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts of- You can lay all sorts that is that Greg smells yeah, that's what we can all agree on Apparently Murray was the one whenever they were But he did discussion Murray was the the chilled out hey guys come on That's right that sounds right God. I love Murray. Yeah, he's also six foot five
Starting point is 01:26:18 That's very tall that is no So when he was when he he was drawing Dorothy the dinosaur, I was a scary, hulking dinosaur. Dave looks like, like, terrified because not in the, like he's just realized six foot five is a height. Is it actually six foot five? Yeah, I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:26:37 How does he not look weird next to the other ones? Like I imagine Jeff's not. They're all six foot four. Yeah, they're all six foot. He's only one inch tall. Greg's quite tall, but they, they, they, they do tower over him. Here's a photo. Greg's tall, Jeff's not. Are they all six foot four? Yeah, they're all six. He's only one inch tall Greg Greg's quite tall But they they do tower over him. Here's a photo Greg's tall Jeff's quite short and Anthony's kind of medium height So he was he was replaced by a tall man as well Which ones tall
Starting point is 01:26:57 The like one who's clearly taller than the others. Oh, what was he's known? Murray the guitarist. Yes the others. What was he's known? Murray. The guitarist. Yes. The funny one. The red one. He's the funny one.
Starting point is 01:27:07 Stop making noise. I've decided that I don't like him now. I know he's tall. He's my least favorite. Wow. You're high. It's the best. Belly button.
Starting point is 01:27:14 Come back, Greg. Greg looked tall. He looked lanky. That he's tall. But there's no other talk. Oh my god. He doesn't understand our height. I'm offended by his height. are look at his old flustered
Starting point is 01:27:28 What about Jeff is Jeff's mom Jeff's pretty sure Jeff's pretty short. Okay, great Hey, look, I think Emma looks like the short what a way to finish. I think Emma might be the shortest Anthony's buff with tats on his arms He's he he love him Is that way they had to ask give ease because he got he roared it up Anthony's buff with tats on his arms. He's the, he love him. Is that why they had to wear skibbies? Because he got, he roared it up. Also, there the,
Starting point is 01:27:50 nothing that had muscles like a skibi. Tight one. That's why Arnold Schwarzenegger always wears skibbies. That's in kindergarten cup. What a skibi. I found this, there's this page that's like, is it's own fun fact thing and it's not as good as our fun facts. There's one fun fact here goes, Jeff Fat, the purple wiggle.
Starting point is 01:28:10 He's not narcoleptic, but falls asleep all the time for real. So that's most people, all asleep. He falls asleep all the time. Nearly every night. Nearly. One night awake, he stays up all night. What's he do? He's watching cartoons. I love Top Cat.
Starting point is 01:28:29 Apparently their revenue peak was $45 million in 2009. But they dropped. They suffered a drop every year until they re-tooled the group with the younger performers. Wow. But I mean the drop still. They're still doing this, yeah, we're not making that and also this is other funny Greg Greg The old yellow wiggle is a huge Elvis fanatic. He owned the fourth largest personal Elvis collection in the world What? That's crazy. Wow
Starting point is 01:29:00 Look, I really we've got a we got a fucking Wrap it up wrap it up so that was the Wiggles thanks that's great. I was very interesting. Yes, I was like I didn't know a lot of the biggest surprise was that his brother wasn't the pirate. That to me Thanks for listening to the Aaron half since that fact. Yeah, we're that really peach early. Hopefully we I don't know why I don't know what I feel like some American listeners are probably like what's an Australian thing and that's maybe why that was suggested by Nick. So like the Wiggles, that'd be one of our very huge exports for sure. So there were on the Forbes rich list, but the proper Wiggles Hugh Jackman.
Starting point is 01:29:41 Nicole Kidman in years that she makes big movies. Headsworth. There are a few. Yeah, now the hymnsworth. Why more actors are music for some reason? Yeah, music's not so much. Hmm. There we go.
Starting point is 01:29:58 I think our last number one over there was Iggy Azalea. Oh, yeah. She was big. Gautier. Gautier was big. Yeah. One song. Anyway. Okay, well that was great though man I really enjoyed that that report a good one. Me too well done Matt. Hey Matt. I'm proud of you. Thanks guys. Matt. I'm proud of you. Thanks Jess. I mean a lot of that was taken from Paul Field's own bloody now.
Starting point is 01:30:24 Thank you Paul Field So you know, and he's and he was only ever gonna talk about it in in You know relatively positive ways I was interesting that he really like go Bench about right. Yeah, why did he sell that horrible shit? I imagine the stuff he left out about how much he hates Greg So that I'd love to hear it like the unauthorized Barography with all the real dirt. Get some dirt on all the vehicles.
Starting point is 01:30:47 Yeah, the real dirt. Apparently at this stage no one's cared enough to do that, but it's really open. Yeah, but the market. Yeah, Wiggles, the real story. By Dave Warnocky. Yeah. It's your time to shine.
