Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers, screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as it pop or kernels in his teeth. They're still not one that he won't see, cause Doug loves movies! Hey, hey, hey everybody! My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves loves movies recording on Sunday January 5th 2025 and my guests today are three of the best depending on your standards they are Mark Alice, Sam Levita Justin Robinson. Hello gents All men finally you have all men we can just have man talk for a good hour Men is what we are. Okay. Let's meet them individually and alphabetically by first name
Starting point is 00:00:57 longtime Pacific Northwest friend of the show a guest Multiple occasions in Seattle and Tacoma. It's Justin Robinson. Hey Justin. Hey Doug. How's it going? Good I was gonna ask you that Have you ever had the chance or the situation where you had to go up against Sam Levine I Don't believe so usually when it's a
Starting point is 00:01:26 Show up here. I usually and stuck going against human computer Ken Jennings Yeah, that is a that is a rough a rough situation for any guests up in that area He's you know, I've got a show coming up this Saturday in Tacoma, the Tacoma Comedy Club, and I asked, I did my due diligence of asking Ken to participate, and he's going to be out of town because the man, he loves to travel. That's part of why he knows so much. He goes places and then remembers them. But Sam has been on the show up in that area. That's why I thought you might have had to go up against him or of course over one of these newfangled Zoom situations.
Starting point is 00:02:22 But I've got good news for you, Justin. What's that Sam is of weak voice today which might also equal you know weak will a weak determination excellent because usually when I win DLM it's been by default DLM by D-F-A-U-L-T. He's returning after a couple of recent wins. I think it was two wins. And his name is Mark Ellis. Hey, Mark. Oh, hello, Doug. Hello, fellow competitors and colleagues. It is wonderful to be here. And Doug, I think I know your next question. I'll go ahead and answer it for you. Yes, I've competed against Sam Levine I believe virtually and in person and in multiple
Starting point is 00:03:10 Trivious settings it's almost like Sam and I hate each other Well, you know, it's nice to have healthy rivalry Especially I mean this one's particularly healthy because you know mark could never say that you know I'm better than you you know you can't say that Well, I my voice is healthier than Sam's today You got that okay? Yeah, you have a better voice than Sam Believe any prizes nobody wins for having a better voice than Sam
Starting point is 00:03:44 Believe anybody nobody wins for having a better voice than Sam It's what? By any of this Levine sandbagging I've seen it too many times to think that because this is how he always is doesn't matter what the trivia format is Sam is always just like oh We're just we're just here happy to play and then the game starts and then he shows you what a whiz he really is So just and if you're in the team up man, let's just take this turkey down. Let's do it. Sam is let's talk about Sam as if he's not here. Sam is the next level, uh,
Starting point is 00:04:12 whiz at this stuff because of his ability to, uh, sometimes pretend that he's guessing when he knows for damn sure the, uh, the correct answer, but he's still still like I'll take a shot at it. Yeah. Anyway, let's talk to him. Shall we? He's returning after yet another win Happy New Year Sam Levine. Oh, hi Doug It was my New Year's resolution to just, to short your name to just two, three syllables. Two to three syllables.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Two to three, depending on, you know, if you're gonna use the first name or not. Yeah, well, as you mentioned, I am of weak voice today. You can, I can definitely hear that my voice is not up to its usual standards, but. No, you do sound like a different person. Right. Yeah. You know what, it's me RFK jr. Oh
Starting point is 00:05:08 Great because I not only want to watch you Lose to Mark Ellis. Yeah, all right. I also have some questions It's not trivia questions Last time you joined us Sam Levine you said that conclave was your fave of 24 I think mostly because you enjoy it a good rhyme, but I'm gonna ask I'm about to enter the portion of the show where I ask everybody To name their favorite movie last year since you were just here You just said conclave. I'm gonna tell you what your options are so you can think this over
Starting point is 00:05:51 Got it. You can either say Doug conclave is still the best movie So I'm sticking with conclave or you can give us your second place Movie from last year. But don't say anything yet, because first let's go to Justin Robinson, who has not been on the show in the last couple of weeks. So we haven't heard from you, Justin. Do you have a favorite film of 2024?
Starting point is 00:06:23 Absolutely. And it's a new entry. So hopefully I'm not stealing from anybody on this one. But Christmas went and saw Nosferatu. The wonderful vampire flick that I thought was just absolutely fantastic and loved every little bit of it. But why are you kind of defensive already about it? Like have you already gone to the internet to discuss it and found out that people have all sorts of wacky opinions?
Starting point is 00:06:53 People really have seemed to love it, but everyone seems to be focusing on vampire dong whenever the conversation comes to talking about it. So I'm a little worried that it'll just go down the road of prosthetic penises Right. I mean I it's funny. I saw it and all I wanted to talk about is that fucking moustache because Holy crap that is quite the You know, it's like a broom It's like the end of a broom underneath his no giant nose nose for a two But so what where do you put it on so it's your number one Robert Eggers film or
Starting point is 00:07:42 Was one of those other ones number one in another year if we went by Robert Eggers films Or was one of those other ones number one in another year? If we went by Robert Eggers films, going the rankings of those, I would still have to put The Witch at number one. And funny enough, it's my wife's favorite movie. And so this year we've been hitting the hidden all the vampire movies. So we watched the original Nosferatu together and then we watched Shadow of a Vampire and then went and watched this one. And when I was watching I was like this. I had no idea
Starting point is 00:08:18 that Robert Eggers had been had done the film. And so the vibe was just that what he did with the witch. And I was like, okay, this makes sense that it was him. And I was really actually super stoked to find out that it was him. And now we're gonna go back and probably watch The Witch again pretty soon. It's like one of those once a year movies that we just bundle up and have a nice,
Starting point is 00:08:39 a fun couple's time living deliciously. a fun couple's time Living deliciously Yeah, what I mean maybe it's is it your Thanksgiving movie like what What's a good time to watch the witch? I mean, I guess Halloween time I guess but it's a different kind of scary that movie that's like more like Just holy shit the way people used to live kind of scary Yeah, so it seems like one of those you can watch any time of the year Like just holy shit the way people used to live kind of scary. Yeah. So it seems like one of those you can watch any time of the year, like just a nice little
Starting point is 00:09:11 fun flick. But for the most part, it feels more along the lines of a winter movie just because I think and how it is. So Valentine's Day, it's still pretty wintery usually in the mid-feb so it'd be a good like I do a Valentine's double of the the witch and Midsomer it could be would be really romantic evening all right so you know I asked you all about you know silly rankings and stuff because no Seratu is still fresh enough that I don't want to, you know, I wouldn't want to give anything away for people who haven't seen it yet.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Um, Mark, what's your. Did the last time you were on, was I asking already for a favorite of 24? Was I still just ask? I was asking about holiday movies. Um, to be more specific, Doug, I felt like I was asking out holiday movies to be more specific dog I felt like I was being gently mocked for my love of George C Scott's a Christmas Carol oh right I put it on my list I was gonna see it but then I turns out the list that I put it on was the naughty list and so I didn't
Starting point is 00:10:21 get around to it but okay I don't Okay, I'll allow it this time. Because I don't even know why I was making a list of naughty films. I don't know if it's naughty, but, um, I, it's on my, now it's top of mind for next holiday season. Cause I shut it down when it comes to Christmas anything. As soon as it's, you know, a day or two after Christmas,
Starting point is 00:10:44 I refuse to take in any Christmas content. You have to. I mean, metaphorically, you are like taking all those Christmas movies out and leaving them by the curb like people do with their Christmas trees. You're just here. The city will take care of it eventually. Because Christmas movies aren't that great. But let me tell you another thing. I mean, there's some great ones obviously and everybody has their favorites
Starting point is 00:11:06 But there's too many of them and too many of them are in the rotation every year that suck that absolutely suck And I was I was actually up in Justin's neck of the woods I was up in Edmund Seattle hanging out with the family over Christmas And so I was staying at a hotel because I you don't if you're an uncle you don't stay with the fan You you need your own space So I was at a hotel for about a week and like I'd come home and I would put on either AMC or whatever The cable channel was it would be running Christmas movies. So some nights I got something really good Like it's a wonderful life to go to bed to and then I think Christmas night I had Fred Claus was my best option so how
Starting point is 00:11:48 dare you that movie's a classic it's so interesting watching Fred Claus in retrospect because they clearly thought it was gonna be the next elf because it's like we got another guy from old school he's a hot comedy star this is gonna be Vince Vaughn's version of elf and I it was it was that's the problem with it is it's like if elf was you know didn't want to be an elf strangely enough really but but that being said I find it I find it you know to be of all the ones that I don't think are great I find it to be somewhat watchable because of the cast, you know, you got Giamatti in there. And, but also on the other hand,
Starting point is 00:12:32 it's just terribly creepy to the CGI, the faces of six foot tall men onto elf bodies. You know, I never can get used to that when I'm watching that movie. It's very it's almost in the neighborhood of the scary children that ride the polar express, which we know haunt your dreams year round. I will say I did pull a dog then because the very next day, December 26th, we did a Siblings at at the movies day and we got rid of the Christmas movies by taking a page out of Justin's book and saw nose for out to which would be a contender for my favorite of the year But since he went nose for out to I'm gonna go with the movie
Starting point is 00:13:16 I saw even more recently and it's really fresh in my mind and I really dug the thriller twists and turns of juror number two Interesting yeah So that and no spot you are like kind of vying for your favorite film of last year I checked my notes and Godzilla minus one came out the previous year. So Wow Wow That's really that's that's something that's that I feel like you don't that you have like a short-term memory situation Well, I haven't seen a whole lot of movies this year Did you move the two movies you saw this week are your top two movies for the entire last year?
Starting point is 00:14:00 Yeah, I mean I'm trying to think of I like to nickel boys I like I like nickel boys I Haven't seen the Bob Dylan movie You know, I'm funny that people cannot Call it by its name. Everyone just says Bob Dylan movie Yeah, but like a complete unknown we get it. It's in this song that's famous like Just call it the Bob Dylan movie.
Starting point is 00:14:27 That would probably make it seem a little silly to put the word movie in there, the Bob Dylan movie because usually when things have movie in there, it's like it's a thing that was adapted from somewhere else, TV or stage or something. Yeah, it takes you out of it. Yeah. So that's to say a person and then movie then sounds like what is what how silly is this gonna be which would be funny to just turn around Salome's got the character down he should just turn around and do like a
Starting point is 00:14:56 walk hard kind of movie but a flat-out comedy where he's Bob Dylan he's Bob Dylan. Hey, Hollywood, your lips to Hollywood's ears. Okay, but you're a number two, Nicholas Holt is the juror, Chris Clint Eastwood is the director, they filmed for about three and a half hours a day. And that includes an hour long lunch. And what they came up with you think is ranks with the painstaking labor that must have gone into nose for a to Well, I wanted to be different than Justin as I pointed out Yeah, but it's good. You liked it
Starting point is 00:15:35 The I guess I'll blame my parents for naming me with an M name and not something that precedes Jay Because I would have said nose for outatu but I was trying to give variety but I'll ride with juror number two. Juror number two is that wild card team that just barely made it into the playoffs that nobody's going to want to play against. Yeah, I guess that particularly the nobody part because I don't think you know, I don't think they've done a great job of letting the world know about your number two other than You know everything I hear about it is they think it's pretty good. But like critics choice awards
Starting point is 00:16:14 I think nominated maybe they're the script or Nicholas Holt or some somewhere got a nomination But for some reason it's just not getting traction with all these awards you know it got completely snubbed by the Golden Globes but I'm just fascinated by Clint Eastwood and for that matter also Ridley Scott that those guys are in their 80s and directing feature films. Yeah. All that hoopla about you shouldn't be president at that age and then these people are in charge of our entertainment. It's crazy. But I'm glad to hear that you liked it. Sam? Yep. What's your decision? Are you sticking with Conclave?
Starting point is 00:16:56 Okay, here's the thing. I really want to see Nosferatu, but will I understand it if I haven't seen Nosferatu, but will I understand it if I haven't seen Nosferatu? No. I said that for the first time yesterday. I was so proud of it. I want someone to stage a ballet, a Dracula ballet, and they'll all wear Nosferatu toos. There it is. I have seen Nosferatu. It's OK. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:17:25 It's not my cup of tea, but it's I don't like what would it have to do? What ingredients would have to add to be your cup of tea? Music, way more musical numbers. Yeah, way more. Why does it start going? Why does it stop down for 15 minutes? Why does it does fair to take you know take on? Putting on the ritz, you know like Frankenstein's monster
Starting point is 00:17:50 So memorably did that's where they screwed up It felt like they could have gone there at any moment though the movie just to me It was like and it's true of all of Eggers movies It's just you're just waiting for something really unhinged to happen and in in the meantime, while it's not unhinged, there's rats or whatever. You know, there's always something. There's always something creepy or gross going on. But but I get it. You didn't love it. Yeah, but yeah, but here's the thing, Doug.
Starting point is 00:18:19 So Conclave is a film I really enjoyed. I just want to repeat myself two episodes in a row. But my actual favorite film that I saw this past year was Will and Harper, the documentary. Oh yeah, you even kind of hinted at, you know, I'll say Conclave because Will and Harper, I already mentioned in a previous show. Yep.
Starting point is 00:18:40 But bringing it back to favorite movie of the year, I love it. I mean I Have to say if it's if it's not my favorite movie of the year, it's close But that's problem with favorite movie of the year, especially on January What's the day the fifth? Yep. Is that I? Just it's gonna take me another month or two to really have seen everything from 2024 for sure That would that would be potential best best movie, you know and that's what usually happens as I catch up on a lot of like Oscar bait movies, I watched them in the
Starting point is 00:19:16 you know January Feb range while amping up to the Big award show but now will it harp is a great example of every documentary gets nominated by the Academy really falls on the just absolutely horrid, terrible things that are going on in the world. Now depressed. You should be about it. Yup. Almost unanimously every once in a while, uh, something else slipped through that's like, you know, actually uplifting and still interesting and, and and and shining a light on the human condition
Starting point is 00:19:49 so will and harper's a great example of will all be disappointed probably uh... i really think you should you know get nominated for best documentary i certainly hope so i probably saw two documents last year and i still stand here saying this but uh... it's good. It's so incredibly good and also good for people because whether you're in flicks right now for any Well, don't listen to this first Then you know then go buy a cameo from Sam then do whatever mark wants you to do And Justin Mark wants you to go see juror number two. No, no, no Jury I want you to be a juror say yes to jury duty
Starting point is 00:20:34 That's why I'm gonna get out of jury duty the next times I miss a judge. I saw the movie juror juror number two and Yeah, I'm going to insist you make me juror number two or send me home Because I don't think they I just don't think they give you that it's like when you're at a crowded amusement park You're like I want to sit in the front. They're like you might get where I tell you to go We got we got rides to load. All right, great job fellas Got we got rides to load. All right, great job fellas Excellent recommendations all around as far as I know I haven't seen juror number two But let's take a break and just you know, calm down for a second after all this excitement. Starting point is 00:23:55 Guests alike more the fans than the guests and it's called ABCD's Here's how this works if any of you are Not remembering from past editions or have just happened to never play but that'd be like being on You know plinko dozens of time. I mean prices right dozens of times and never playing play go You've probably played this game in honor of Justin being up in the Pacific Northwest and the fact that I'm going to be there next Saturday as I
Starting point is 00:24:34 mentioned earlier at the Tacoma Comedy Club with a live taping of this particular podcast. Today we're gonna spell Washington I'll name a letter in Washington you name a movie that begins with that letter match what I wrote down and when there is a theme so keep that in mind we'll start with Justin then go to mark and then Sam probably will have his full voice back by the time we get to him 100% Justin here's the first letter in the word Washington Give me a movie it starts with W Let's go with warriors
Starting point is 00:25:23 It's not the warriors are you counting the as the I love to okay, then we'll go then with wedding crashers It's not the wedding. It's not no wedding crashers Well, the title I wrote down could have had a bell in front of it as well, but it does not and uh, I chose wild things, too In now believe it or not wild things too fits into a theme That you'll maybe get more of a handle on as we go through the letters Mark your first letter is a What do you think it might be I
Starting point is 00:26:07 Love this game because I'm also a Washington commanders fan over in the playoffs and that's exciting. I'm locked in I'm focused And they want they won today They won today. They were already in as of last week, but they won for seating and it's always fun to beat the Cowboys. So Very exciting time for the first time in ever As far as the game today, I'm gonna go with another beloved sequel. Actually, it's maybe the worst sequel of all time airplane the sequel Okay, I mean I don't even I didn't like that movie probably much at all But you know, there's been it's horrible a lot, but there's been a lot worse. I don't even I didn't like that movie probably much at all. But you know, there's been a lot
Starting point is 00:26:46 But there's been a lot worse. I don't know about that I mean, it's still you know had this kind of same kind of is almost like You know when they put out that anchorman that was all jokes. It weren't in the original cut You know, so it kind of had that feel airplane too, you know I just felt like more of that first movie when we really didn't need more. There was like a million jokes in 90 minutes. It was perfect. Got William Shatner in it. Yeah. It feels like you thought about this.
Starting point is 00:27:17 There's there's sequels out there, Mark, you know, they have zero laughs in them, you know, that are painful to watch. I can't think of any offhand but given your analysis I feel like airplane 2 is the movie you wrote down listen I you since the game's gonna be over immediately I have to you know I have to fill time a little bit by Not revealing that it is air put no it is Sequels is not the theme by the way because this is this one was an original that I never saw Amsterdam oh Okay
Starting point is 00:28:00 Now I hate that I missed it because that's also as you know Doug a great Van Halen tune As I know. All right. Sam, your first letter is S. Wow. Well, I was hoping I would have more of a handle on the theme. Don't. What a dig. Wow. So even though SQLs is not the theme, I'll say speed to cruise control.
Starting point is 00:28:27 That'd be funny if I just written down plain old speed. Soul crushing. Yeah. Or speed, speed lunging. I don't know if that's a movie. Yeah. The movie I wrote down, and then I think the theme is really gonna come become clear Save the last dance Totally clear. Yeah, right. No Okay, we're back to you Justin. You've got three Titles that don't seem like they should have anything in common
Starting point is 00:29:03 What's your guess for the letter H? H these don't make any sense so far What the why did you watch the wild things too that was that's the most kind of boggling on that That's not like I've seen it. I guess yeah, but even just putting in there It feels like you might have seen it or one. No, I just know something about it that fits the theme hmm Let's go with I Have no idea with the theme. So I'm just gonna go with hackers. I
Starting point is 00:29:42 mean terrific guess because it begins with H. That's really all you needed to accomplish was something that began with H and you did it. The movie I chose heart condition. Hello. Heart condition. Receive. Hello. Oh, he has condition. Receive. Okay, I is the next letter to Mark. Alright, I think I figured this whole thing out.
Starting point is 00:30:16 I was thinking of iMovies and I was like, you know what? I just feel like this movie is going to fit into many themes that I could have, which is why I'm about to say iRobot starring Will Smith. It always, you know, comes to mind for me when I'm, anytime I'm constructing games where it's movies that begin with I, because it's just, it's just right there. Right. It's just I, comma. This is right there right now. It's just I comma frontal robot And you know as robots are taking over the world, you know, the movie's gonna become more and more relevant
Starting point is 00:30:59 Robots probably watch it for tips on how what not to do They do it's like they're can confirm film. Yeah, it's their recruitment movie. I chose inside man. Oh, yeah. Boy, this theme is something else. Yeah, Sam. It sounds like Sam's got it. No, no, he doesn't. I do not.
Starting point is 00:31:25 So what do you got for the letter N? Needful things. Ooh. Good one. I like it. And I think we're kind of in the same genre here. I went with a movie called Night Catches Us. No, my next guess.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Right? These are real movies or are these like Seinfeld movies? We called night catches us. No, my next guess right These are real movies or these like Seinfeld movies I mean inside man was made by a New Yorker In Spike Lee G is the next letter to Justin Gee gee What are you doing with this theme Might not even bother it might not be worth it to worry about the theme Let's go with.
Starting point is 00:32:29 Golden Eye. Oh, it's so funny when I'm listening, like I just it's so fun when people match and and, you know, I knew you were going to say something that began with G, but still just that's when you went good. I went, oh, man, it might be happening. But no, I didn't say golden eye I said glory oh yeah indeed T is the next letter what What are you thinking Mark Ellis? Then I'm going to go with the taking of Pelham 123. You sure you don't want to go with the Pelican brief or
Starting point is 00:33:27 Devil in a blue dress I'm going with any carrot that's dangled in front Well, unfortunately the movie that I Trading day Yeah, Sam, take us home, buddy. We're up to, oh, yeah. One good cop. I thought you'd figure it out, but I put down out of time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:05 I thought you'd figure it out, but no I put down out of time Yeah, no, and Then the last end goes to Justin he gets a bonus guess because there's one too many letters What do you think state what do you think Justin I Have no idea what this theme is. So I'm just gonna go with national security Martin Lawrence Martin Lawrence Steve's on movie because I Don't know why That's called national security, yeah
Starting point is 00:34:40 Yeah Because there's also national treasure movies. There's many and then what's the one with the rock and and and heart Oh Yeah, that's like central intelligence. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I got those titles those kind of titles and then and then the then they're not even Serious, they're just comedies with those kind of it's amazing And then they're not even serious. They're just comedies with those kind of it's crazy Um, I couldn't come up with an end title for this particular theme. So I just wrote now. It catches us again Um so
Starting point is 00:35:17 Just for future reference that happens in this game sometimes you hear this theme Yeah, I really need to know what this is. Okay. I will read all the titles and then tell you the theme Hold your applause until the end while things to Amsterdam save the last dance heart condition inside man night catches us glory Training day out of time and night catches us again Films featuring Denzel John John David, Isaiah or Kerry Washington. How about that? Congratulations. Nobody wins. Washington. There you go. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:58 I didn't realize Denzel Washington was in Wild Things too. Yeah, that was Isaiah. Isaiah was in that one. And then John David was in Amsterdam and Kerry Washington was in Night Catches Us and most of the other ones are Denzel. Our condition was early Denzel. All right. So, uh, we don't have a winner, which just means, uh, we just flipped the order around for the second game and we'll do that after this quick break. We'll be right back. We are back.
Starting point is 00:36:38 And what an exciting starting game. Mark Ellis, give us, give us your sports announcer recap of what's happened so far. Well Doug exciting action here on Doug loves movies as the game Washington went by the wayside Denzel Washington three other Washington's no competitor got it right. We remain scoreless back to you. we remain scoreless back to you.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Now let's go to Justin Robinson down on the field. Yes, it looks thanks down here. It looks like all of the competitors are pretty confused and they're getting ready for the next quarter, doing a couple of laps around. And hopefully we will see a little bit more action from them. Back to you. Now let's go to Sam Levine at the hospital. Well Doug, here at Draft King Central, we're okay. Sports betting lines are all off on this today.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Everybody's losing. All right, we're going to turn that around because somebody somebody has to win and somebody will win. And this next game that I call. Earmuffs for the young. Go puck yourself. Whoa. Yeah, you heard me. Go puck yourself. I found a website
Starting point is 00:38:06 Not going to tell you which one They made a list Where they just announced just blatantly Might have even been just one person at this particular site a list of the top 10 hockey movies of all time now hockey movies is crazy is a crazy genre because I personally have rarely seen a hockey movie I didn't love maybe like to me the worst hockey movie is like airplane 2 wasn't a good hockey movie had very little hockey in it
Starting point is 00:38:48 but I love hockey movies so but there's not that many of them you know like just look at 2024 was there one I don't think there was maybe but here's how this is going to work. We'll start with Sam, then go to Mark, then go to Justin. You're each going to get three guesses. You're going to take turns naming movies you think might have landed on this list of the 10 best hockey movies. If you name the number one movie, you get 10 points. If you name the number 10 movie, you get one point.
Starting point is 00:39:22 And then there's all those points in between and I should have written down those points to make it clearer to myself but I'll figure it out alright so Sam you sir are up first all right and you just need to name any movie that would be considered a hockey movie that you think might be at the top of somebody's list. Of all the hockey movies I've seen. Out of every hockey movie. So many. I would say my favorite and hopefully somewhere on this ridiculous list is Slapshot. is Slapshot. Slapshot is not only your favorite,
Starting point is 00:40:06 but many people's favorite when talking about hockey movies starring the great Paul Newman and the first Hanson brothers before those other Hanson brothers came along. They should remake with those guys. You're right. that's a great idea Just quick sidebar Hanson the band has some Christmas bangers like listening to Christmas Hanson's got some good ones. I'm telling you I
Starting point is 00:40:36 don't I Feel like that's accurate, you know because You know, they're always poppy, which I like in a Christmas song. I don't like it to be too much like, you know, like we're in church or something. Right. Right. And and percussion too, like the, you know, it's probably got, you know, you know, they probably don't skimp on the sleigh bells. Yeah, I'm telling you, check it out. I have a fever for more sleighbell, okay, so a
Starting point is 00:41:09 Flapshot is number two on the list. Okay, that was a suspenseful reveal. So Sam gets nine points That seems like you know, that's a very good start, but there's still lots of points out there on the board Let's go to Mark. What movie do you think could be number one on the list of hockey movies? The only way you combat a certifiable classic film like Slapshot is, is going with a warm, syrupy inspiring based on a real life story film. And that would be miracle starring Kurt Russell.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Another one that people often cite, like when you're talking to people about hockey movies, it's another one that's up there. And on this particular list, it's number one. Yep. Brooks, the coach and his legacy live on Yeah, it's uh, it's good probably a little long Because I think it comes in well over two hours
Starting point is 00:42:13 but That's the thing about sports movies. No matter how bored I am during them usually by the end You know, it's You know, you feel good. You feel good about what you've done, you know, like how people feel watching their favorite sports team, uh, when, you know. Yeah. But the movies are much more bankable on your team winning. So I recommend that.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Right. Unless you're, uh, you know, unless your team Rudy, right. And they did Rudy's team. They didn't win. Did they? Well, they, they beat Georgia tech. They team Rudy, right? And they did Rudy's team. They didn't win, did they? Well they beat Georgia Tech. They did win, but Rudy wasn't the reason. No, he got in for one play and in real life he missed the sack, but you know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:56 And then they all put him up on their shoulders just because he, you know, he had the guts and the determination to fail briefly at something. He's the worst Division one athlete that ever lived. But I love that movie. OK, so Justin, this is wow. I mean, to stay competitive, you need to come up with something pretty high up on the list. What's your guess? I'm I'm hoping that this list was made more by a millennial and they just took
Starting point is 00:43:29 the one two that would obviously be on the top. And then their number three would be the mighty ducks. So you're saying that like they take it seriously for two slots and then just say, fuck it, mighty ducks. And then they say, I love the mightyucks because I grew up on the Mighty Ducks Yeah, and all the sequels and whatnot. Yeah. Oh, yeah Number four on the list. I know not a bad start for Justin with seven points. This is Very very close game. We go back to Sam
Starting point is 00:44:04 for guess number two Obviously I wish I could have said either of those other titles right the ones that that's the that's where the frustration can come in Yeah And you need to come up with number three or any you know anything on the list would you know put you? Tied or in the lead well that's just based on the fact that i've get to give my second guess first um the list of hockey movies i can even think of is pretty small so i will say uh goon. I'm sorry, I'm William Scott. Goon is number three on the.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Yes. Oh, whoa. Yeah, that's a strong. That's a strong pull. Yeah. Are you you like that movie, Sam? I saw it once and I remember chuckling. Yeah, it's very it's amusing. But also I remember chuckling. Yeah, it's very it's amusing. But also I found it I found it heartwarming. When people are talking recommending hockey movies that's the one that I think because you know Miracles very serious Slapshots a
Starting point is 00:45:21 combo of like drama and silliness and you know, Mighty Ducks is Mighty Ducks, but Goon is like, you know, to me really gets into some more like nuts and bolts inside hockey stuff, but in a fun way. It never stops being fun. Yeah. Okay, so Mark, you really need to come in here with what would come after Mighty Ducks at number four. Yeah, Doug, that's going to be essential to me winning this game. I think we've kind of gone down the line from like the most obvious to some of the deeper cuts. So I'm going to stick with that theme. I think we've kind of gone down the line from like the most obvious to some of the deeper cuts
Starting point is 00:46:06 So I'm gonna stick with that theme but another well-liked hockey movie if not, the most well-known is mystery Alaska People will take a moment when given the chance to shit on mystery Alaska and I don't I don't get it I But again, I do love hockey movies. But for some reason that one, whenever I come across it, I enjoy it immensely. And it is number five on the list. Guys, I'm just, just a pat on the back
Starting point is 00:46:42 for my fellow competitors and me. We are great at guessing. As bad as we were at Washington. We're that good at hockey movies. Yeah. Well, it's really, uh, it's going to come down to the wire here between you and Mark and we have a, a spoiler by the name of Justin who gets to go next. Well, what do you think is still out there?
Starting point is 00:47:01 Unfortunately, as a new hockey fan, because we just got the Kraken in the last couple of years so I've been I've been whole hogging watching the Kraken and supporting them but before you know 2019 and most hockey things weren't on my list and so now I'm looking at things that are tangentially related to hockey and hoping that they're on this list because the only one that I could think of right now was Well, there's hockey in it and it's a hockey player who has to learn figure skating to become a better hockey player. So I'm going with the cutting edge. cutting-edge was on here we watched it recently and a Benson movie interruption at Dicey typewriter in LA and it really it holds up for exactly what you remember it being which is corny but also yet somehow effective
Starting point is 00:47:58 and I think I can think of and I know it does have a hockey player in it. It's true but unfortunately, it did not make the the top ten but We'll be back to you in a minute Justin to see if you Can come up with another one based on hearing these other guesses. Maybe something will Pop into your brain Sam. This is crucial now that you know boy You have to come up with, basically, you have to come up with number six to guarantee your win. But anything that's remaining in the top 10 is going to be helpful because Mark currently is only one point behind you. Oh, boy. Oh boy. It popped into my brain when Justin said, you know, hockey is present. I don't know that this is a hockey movie. But when he said that this triggered in my brain, my
Starting point is 00:48:59 second favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme film. Sudden Death. Sudden Death is another great guess, another great hockey adjacent movie because there's hockey going on. There is. But you know we're more, we spend more time like with Jean-Claude up in the rafters. I mean he does make an incredible goal save Yes, he's not a bad goalie. I wouldn't I'd sign him to attend a contract see what he can do well this this is forced a very exciting finish because Unfortunately Sam that did not make the list It made to ruin your days your your month, or maybe your year. But Mark, you are one point behind Sam.
Starting point is 00:49:51 So you need to come up with either, if you come up with the number 10 movie, this will be a tie. If you come up with a nine, eight, seven or six, you're going to be the winner and then we're going to ask Justin to name more and more just for fun. I think I'm out of original hockey movies. Now there is the logic that I could try to take a guy who's a hockey player who happens to play golf and go happy Gilmore but I think this list is pretty pure to the sport of hockey in and of itself. So I'm going to go to the sequels and I'm going to say D2, The Mighty Ducks 2. First of all, regarding the Happy Gilmore thing, you know, if a movie taking place entirely in a hockey arena like sudden death and another movie what was the other one that wasn't on the list
Starting point is 00:50:51 the cutting edge Oh cutting edge where you know the guy talks about being a hockey player ad nauseam those weren't in this, so you were definitely on the right track with it's gotta be something that truly is a hockey movie. And D2 colon The Mighty Ducks came in at number eight on the list. Wow. Three more points. Except the problem is Mark Ellis said D2, the Mighty Ducks two. Just I know he threw it at the end, but I'm going to fix it in the edit.
Starting point is 00:51:31 I see. And Sam's voice wasn't healthy enough to protest and Ellis got the. Yeah, I was waiting for that to come up, but just pulling that title at all was, you know, worth it for me. But yeah, I usually I'm a real stickler for exact titles. Justin, do you think of another one? Well, I didn't think that they would just put it. I figured they would put the whole Mighty Ducks under one umbrella.
Starting point is 00:52:03 So it seems like this list is suspect at best right I mean at least it's lower on the list that's legit you know feels kind of legit because also I don't know how many ducks they ended up doing but you know three and four aren't even on this list well that's good to know because I was gonna say three because I have no idea you know what that one's called Is it just d3 the mighty ducks, I don't even know if they what kept doing it that way I think it went back to my three three. Yeah, I did Terminator 2 thing. Yeah. Yeah D 2 is supposed to be kind of a play on terminate t2
Starting point is 00:52:43 So it's not like three ducks three fairies three like that yeah it's kind of like the shrek titles they're all over the place too they need to keep things consistent it's don't sometimes although toy story's been really kicking ass in that regard one two three four two three four five um recount what. Oh, so what's your guess? I have no I have no guess. I don't know any more hockey movies. Nobody should know more hockey movies, but you might have heard of these when I say them. Coming in at number 10 was a film called Red Army.
Starting point is 00:53:23 No, which I believe, if I'm not mistaken, is a documentary Was a film called Red Army? Nope. Which I believe, if I'm not mistaken, is a documentary about the story that's in the movie Miracle. If I had to guess. Number nine is a hockey movie called The Rocket. In which I assume there's a hockey player who goes by that nickname. In which I assume there's a hockey player who goes by that nickname number seven is another a movie named after a famous hockey player named Maurice Richard
Starting point is 00:53:57 Ever hear that one mark I'm willing to bet it's probably Richard right Now you heard of it? No, I still have not. And then I said Richard just to be clear that, you know, because if I say Maurice Richard, then people are like, what are you even saying? And then number six can't believe this one got overlooked because it stars Who's in it Swayze Rob Lowe Cynthia Gibbs and it's called young blood. Oh Yeah, yeah
Starting point is 00:54:41 Oh, wow. Okay. I, yeah. I was, yeah. I'm up with young blood. Well, congratulations, Mark. You are our winner. What would you like to promote? You get to go.
Starting point is 00:54:53 Oh, one last thing. The website was ranker. That was according to ranker. So I guess, you know, when you call yourself ranker, I guess you're the ultimate authority and things you want to rank. Yeah, they rank everything. I think they're yeah, there's a lot of crap. I'm probably going to go on an hour rabbit hole and rake her now that we played this
Starting point is 00:55:18 game. All right. Well, have fun with that. But what else do you got going on in your life? What would you like to promote? Well, while we all sit on our hands anxiously waiting for Doug to see either Jordan number two or George E. Scott's A Christmas Carol, in the meantime you can catch me at a couple tour dates doing stand-up once March begins in Tampa Florida, Greensboro, North Carolina and you can check out
Starting point is 00:55:42 my special Alive and Well on all things comedies platform in the meantime and I will also because his voice isn't as strong as it usually is remind everybody to contribute to Sam Levine and Clark Wolf's wonderful film project Fiendsgiving. Let's get this puppy made. That is very nice of you to, uh, to do a Sam's plug for him. I'm a giver, especially after, you know, stealing the wind by cheating. Well, that's, I thought I'd soften the, maybe avoid an angry phone call. All right.
Starting point is 00:56:31 I'll let Sam mention that again, you know, in a moment. But first, let's go to Justin Robinson. What's going on, dude? What would you like to promote? I'd like to direct people to my Patreon because I have a free podcast series straight up there. My patreon because I have a free podcast series straight up there. So if you go to patreon.com slash rev and fuego You can check out revs geek out where I have a currently a 10 episode series talking just about geek nostalgia and movies magic the gathering if some of those nerdies out there kind of love that sort of thing and
Starting point is 00:57:12 A whole bunch of other stuff along those lines. So just patreon.com slash rev and fuego right on dude, and I hope you know I had already booked the show at Tacoma Next Saturday, but you know, I love that you'll be in the area in case there's like a fallout or something. I will I'll hit you up straight up Sam yeah Well, of course saving your voice while Mark was doing your plugs now you have to do marks marks plugs. That's fine Look, here's the thing. A lot of people don't know is that Mark Ellis married me
Starting point is 00:57:45 Mm-hmm so Look, here's the thing a lot of people don't know is that Mark Ellis married me. Mm hmm. So if you're looking, I'm just saying he did. Mark Ellis married me. Mark Ellis was the efficient at my wedding and he is the most capable, incredible, efficient, available. So if you are looking to get hitched and you're not sure who to hire as your efficient, look no further than Mark Ellis. Yeah, I'll do it. Yep. All right. He married me and I never been happier with that decision.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Yeah, but he takes up too much space on the counter in the bathroom. That's true. Yeah, find me on Cameo and of course, as Mark mentioned, the Indiegogo campaign that I've got going with Clark Wolf. You can find the link to that Indiegogo campaign on my Instagram bio. Of course, I'm at Sam Levine. But yeah, just please come check out our campaign, support it, Book me in Cameo. I'm not going to record those cameos today, probably. I'll be honest with you. Oh, yeah. It's not sounding so great.
Starting point is 00:58:48 But soon, very soon. They usually, the Cameo windows usually like three days unless somebody is like a terrible friend that needs a last minute, forgot to get a gift kind of thing. Yeah, a 24-hour rush job. 24-hour rush. So, but 24 hour rush job. 24 hour rush. So but even if somebody gave you the 24 hour rush right now, you probably your voice would probably be much better tomorrow morning. I hope so. I'm going to go have a whole bucket of honey.
Starting point is 00:59:17 I don't like your dirty bedroom euphemisms. Doug Plugs, I've already said some of these during the course of the show but Tuesday night the Benson movie Interruption is back at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles. We've got a terrific lineup with Paul Shear, Ross Hernandez, and Jerry Trainor. excuse me Saturday January 11th. I don't do Sunday afternoon shows during NFL season but this Saturday January 11th if you like college football you're out of luck Douglas movies returns to the Tacoma Comedy Club in Tacoma, Washington and Sean Jordan Monica Neve and Trey Crowder will all be there
Starting point is 01:00:05 that's another terrific lineup and I Haven't announced any of the guests yet, but we are going to live stream from dynasty typewriter on Saturday January 25th I Think we've live streamed on those movies a couple two three times in the past But this will be the like the biggest one in terms of, it'll actually look like a TV show and be worth purchasing the live stream. That's on Saturday, January 25th,
Starting point is 01:00:36 four o'clock Pacific time, seven o'clock Eastern. You can go to dynastytypewriter.com or douglasmovies.com to try to head in the right direction to either get tickets to come see it in person or watch the live stream. Thanks again to Justin Robinson, Mark Ellis and Sam Levine. I always close with the last line from a movie and so today I thought it'd be appropriate to close with the last line from Slapshot. So as always, oh for sure. Now it's time for Doug to watch another talkie. Eyes of gold is viewing prowess makes it cocky.
Starting point is 01:01:26 There's no room in his heart for you, cause Doug loves movies!
