Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop or kernels in his teeth There's still not one that he won't see Cause Doug loves movies Hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Sunday, July 14th, 2024. And my guests today are Martha Kelly, Sam Levine, and Gareth Reynolds. Hello. Hello.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Hi. Hello. Let's meet them individually and alphabetically by first name. What that means, we're going to start by saying, get with Reynolds is back. I felt like you were really vamping there to figure out who came first, to be honest with you. It took me a second because I put it in normal alphabetical order
Starting point is 00:01:00 when I introduce everybody and then switch to first name. So it's it's an adjustment. It's always a mental game. Yeah. Now you're doing a lot of brain stretches. Hi, Doug. Thanks for having me again. It's a pleasure.
Starting point is 00:01:14 It's an honor. Did I ask you how it how's it going? You did. And I'm trying to skirt that, but I guess I'll answer it pretty good. How are you? I'm all right. I don't know why that needed skirting. Well I just I don't want to get into it. You just spit it right out once you said it. Well maybe there's a lot more going on than I care to talk about I'm not well okay happy? Yeah I hear you I agree I agree that you're not happy. I know
Starting point is 00:01:42 you know that you know that better than I do sometimes, which is tricky. Well, this chat part has gone great. You feel like it's over? Feels like it's really zoomed by real fast. Feels like I've heard you do this part before and it's gone on way longer, so it's not... I usually have interest in what else is happening. Sure. I really kind of... the You really you picked it up perfectly. Well, enjoy the rest of the intros. I'm going to ask you a trivia question. You're going to go, not I'm not really in the mood. I'm not a big answer guy. This kind of interrogation.
Starting point is 00:02:31 I don't love the energy. But thank you for being here. Thank you, Doug. Always a pleasure. And there's the listen to how Martha does it. She knows what she's doing. Martha Kelly is back. How's it going, Martha? Hi, I feel like you're setting me up to fail, Doug.
Starting point is 00:02:47 I definitely. I like that we've made you an enemy of hosting, Doug. It's just such a great gang of likable individuals today. I have to stir something up somehow. But you're doing okay, Martha? Yes, I'm on a new antidepressant and it is really doing a good job. So cannot recommend highly enough to get on medication if you need it. I'm going to make that bold statement. If you need medication for any gonna make that a bold statement
Starting point is 00:03:30 If you know like patient for any illness and it's available I recommend taking it Yeah, try to get your hands on it try to afford it. That's the that's one of the trickier parts Yeah, but but definitely get it if you can Um, yeah, this is not as uplifting as I had hoped it would be well you know part of it's the delivery I think you know you you seem happy but you don't sound happy I tried so hard to sound happy I just don't that it's possible. I don't know what is wrong with my voice, but yeah, I tried. I really thought I sounded happy. That's always part of the fun, Martha, is that you, I've seen you play characters who are really happy, but it is is we could see the struggle well luckily for viewers my acting career appears to be over so we now I'm not up on what's going on with the whole euphoria verse but I do know that they're making more is your character
Starting point is 00:04:47 not going to be involved anymore I will say that I too am not up on what's happening which is probably a sign that my character is not coming back I would guess but yeah I you never know with these things I am was really lucky to get to do that show but mostly acting wise I prefer comedy but I also prefer not not lifting a finger to earn a living. So if I can do that somehow since uh It's lean times. I'm trying to make a joke about it But if you're not a famous And you're a character actor. It's lean times right now
Starting point is 00:05:38 um, but it's true I'm, I'm lucky. I had any acting jobs. I'm not, please don't spread this around, but I'm not the world's greatest actor. So I'm lucky that I had the work that I did. And have- Calderdash. I'm happy about it. Sam disagrees.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I do too. I want to push back as well. Yeah, we all think you're a great actor, but you're all wrong. And I can't move on to Sam and I'm grateful. Yeah. Better intro than mine, though. I'll say that, Martha, if that's any consolation that that seemed more interesting. Thank you, Gareth. You're welcome.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Here's the good news, though, if you four years continue to make episodes, that'll keep the show alive in general and the residual checks will continue. Well done Doug. I love free money so. Yeah, no those are the best. The best. Absolutely. Speaking of the best, our third guest, the I guess the one I wanted was not available today, but we have. The amazing Sam Levine is back. What's going on, champ? Oh, hey, Doug. I'm so glad to be here. Everything's going great. I have no complaints. Oh, good. My acting career has never been better.
Starting point is 00:07:00 I'm very excited about the state of, you know, global politics and how many living, great celebrities we have. So I'm very excited about the state of, you know, global politics and how many living great celebrities we have. So I'm doing terrific. Thanks for having me on. Ah, that's so good. That is an interesting way to look at all the recent, there's just been a spate of celebrity deaths, but that is a great way to look at it, that we've got so many more. The majority, the vast majority are still alive need. I remind people Dick Van Dyke is still alive and
Starting point is 00:07:29 Thriving that is a wild one. That is just wild how you just see him out there just Enjoying himself. Yeah, he will outlive us all As he should feel like he might yeah Yeah, there's all these other people that are dying are just like in their 50s and 60s. No, it's heartbreaking. Yeah. But I'm still here. Who died in addition to Richard Simmons and Shannon Doherty? Who else died? Well, Dr.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Ruth died. Donald Trump lost an ear. Understanding that it's because her chute didn't open. Damn it She loved life on the edge more than anyone, but we all we all knew yeah thrill seeker. Yeah Actress Shelley Duvall also just Yeah It's been weird. It's been a weird weekend for Telling is fine.
Starting point is 00:08:26 For reasons. I want everyone to know that. Yeah, I'll say he's fine. Fine. Doing fine. Fine. Mel Brooks, fine. Working. Oh my God, stop this game. I hate this game. I'm telling you that it's one thing to focus on the sad, but there are so many mid to late nineties.
Starting point is 00:08:45 I know, but your jinx and everybody. I mean, I just said Richard Simmons is fine. Just the other day you did. I did it. Yeah, Doug. I feel like this happened with me on the show years ago where you and I were talking about someone and then like two days later they were not a part of the world anymore. And a bunch of people tweeted at me and were like, Oh my God, you were,
Starting point is 00:09:11 you jinxed it. I was like, Oh, if I had that kind of power. Yeah, it was a big one too. I think you're talking about Michael Jackson. Probably. Yeah, no, I, well, I was talking mad shit about Michael Jackson on an episode that didn't come out until after he died. Everyone knew he was dead. That's right. So I had to, that Super sad about my cold that it's all people want here's what I said about him All right, well this has been a fantastic Start to the show and I'm excited about the games. We're gonna play today, but before we do that I'd like each one of you to recommend a movie just one You know something that you have some passion for.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Sam's been coming in with some real winners lately. Now, it's not sure. Gareth. Well, I was being sarcastic about Sam and his winners. Oh, that's great. That's good. I like a low bar. Yeah, it's low. What do you got? oh, I'm sorry hi Doug it's Garrett from earlier Okay, I do you ever find that when you watch a movie on a plane you like it more Does that ever a lot of people? Okay?
Starting point is 00:10:41 Somehow I think that I think that that's true. I think that that's true. And I flew back from Australia and I watched One Love, the Bob Marley biopic, which it seemed like most people hated and I really liked it. So that was that was a movie I enjoyed recently and it's called one love and it's about Bob Marley Hold on. Let me finish and if you can watch it on a plane that you're gonna like it. So watch one love on a plane Okay, so there's a parenthetical in this recommendation is it I can't recommend it as a ground movie, right? But a plane watch it's it's a killer Did you nod off at all or you went straight all the way through?
Starting point is 00:11:27 I went I made it the whole time without sleep. You mean the flight or the movie? You did have like a you did have like a whole night's sleep also on the plane, right? Yeah, there was a lot of sleep. There was it was a whole it's a nightmare. So it's just a pure nightmare. Well, wait, I want to be clear. You raw dogged one love. Yep. I'm probably not using that very popular term. No, no, no. I think that's right. I think that's
Starting point is 00:11:49 right. Raw dogged one love. I raw dogged one love on a plane with a bunch of people around. Great. Yep. I one loved on a plane. God. What? It's fine. You're not even gonna be on the no fly list now. Well, whatever. That's good. I highly recommend it on a plane one. Love yourself Martha could you please Recommend a movie that would be good on a boat. Oh wow Well, I was gonna recommend that people watch Twister to get ready for the release. Oh, how never. I like that. That's very corporate of you. Yeah, but I'm going to change it based on Gareth's answer because it made me remember
Starting point is 00:12:37 I tried to watch Paddington 2 twice on a plane and within the first three minutes I started the the the I mean, if you like to cry around other around strangers, watch it on a plane. Do you think that the average person would find it immediately? Cry worthy experience or are going to find that out? Have any of the rest of you seen Paddington, too? No, I saw it. I forget what happens in the beginning. That would be so sad.
Starting point is 00:13:46 The trauma. Well, it's not sad. It's moving. It's about it's about how his adoptive parents, not the humans, but the bears or his aunt, I guess, is the one his aunt and uncle. It's how they find and save him. Oh my god It's very moving not not sad but um, but then he goes to prison and I was like that I don't want to see the teddy bear go to prison, but it is a good movie. Yeah. Well, you know, who wants to see Hugh Grant in prison for that matter?
Starting point is 00:14:35 Thank you. A lot of people. So yeah, people get mad at him when he says, says obnoxious things. It's just like, do you, he's Hugh Grant, right? You know that he's yeah, he was playing himself in about a boy. He's just a guy who's rich for not really doing much of anything. So you can say whatever you can say, whatever he wants, whatever he wants. So he tells us when he's not having a good time
Starting point is 00:15:05 and I think he had a good time making Paddington 2 because he's a villain and he also has a little song and dance, which I think he secretly likes that part of his career. And but then he agreed to be in Wonka, directed by the director Paddington too. But then he went on to be very negative about having to play Oompa Loompa and saying that he didn't really enjoy that experience. That's how we felt. Yeah. I just couldn't, I could not get into it
Starting point is 00:15:45 There's these movies that are coming out now where I just tried and I can't Can't make it happen and I could not I'd only watched that movie like in spurts and I would just give up because I just be like what is the What is any of this supposed to be this isn't? This isn't even a even from a like, okay, go ahead and make up an origin story for this character, the creator of which is long dead. Let's go for it. Then that's what they come up with?
Starting point is 00:16:14 It didn't make any sense to me. Okay, Sam. Yeah. So this has to be on a plane or on land. On a plane, on a boat, on a train. Look, here's the thing. Things have been really rough lately for a lot of people. And I know a good uplifting movie.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Hang on one second, Sam. Real quick. I got a quick question for you before you say the title. What did you recommend last week? I think it was Aliens versus Predator. Versus Predator. Versus Predator? Yeah. Okay, now go ahead and give us your movie this week.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Okay. Like I said, something that brings the people together. The classic early 2000s film, Requiem for a Dream. Oh, wow. Yeah, what was the subtitle on that Aliens versus movie? Oh Requiem. Wow. How about that? Yeah somebody already figured you out on the Douglas movies ex formerly Twitter account where they They pointed out that you're linking up each title your next recommendations starts with the last word from the previous recommendation. Wow. Wow. Wow. I was wondering how long that would take. It only took like three weeks, I think, right? It's been 26 episodes done.
Starting point is 00:17:34 No way. Oh my god. Yeah. I've been having my own little build a diet. The last two, the last two are really pushing it because they're terrible movies. But you. Well, he wants to get caught. He wants to get some real stinkers in there over the over the 26 episodes. That's amazing. Yeah, you always have to come up with some reason for recommending it. And so but that's funny that it took you being on You know episodes one next to or the other that probably made it more clear to say whatever was it pointed it out
Starting point is 00:18:13 Mmm, cuz I thought it was something you just started on the last three or four, but 26 is that that's impressive. Yep But tell us why what's so great about reckreck-A-Mage for a Dream. Oh, well, I mean, it actually is a great film. I probably won't probably not going to be as uplifting as I had hoped. But if you've never seen it, and I know a lot of people haven't like I know there's people who have never seen it because friends of them said, Oh, it's so dark or whatever. And I mean, admittedly, it's probably a film that most people will just want to see the one time. But Ellen Burstyn in that movie is just on another level of acting.
Starting point is 00:18:54 And then she didn't win the Oscar, right? She did not. She lost best actress to Julia Roberts, who played the lady from Real Life. Who's- Brockovich. Aaron Brockovich. Yeah. Yeah. She made the water clean. Yep. actress to Julia Roberts, who played the lady from Real Life who's helped her. Aaron Brockovich. Yeah. Yeah. She made the water clean.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Yeah. Yeah, those two were like neck and neck, I remember, because Ellen Berson was so crazy good and Julia's, you know, Julia Roberts in a quote unquote serious role. Right. Julia Roberts is a great actress. Yeah. But it's just really hard for me with a straight face to be like, Oh no, for sure. She was, you know, flexed her acting muscles better than Ellen
Starting point is 00:19:32 Burston, who put on a just like a career best performance in Requiem. Yeah. She's good. She's already got an Oscar though. So it's not too sad. I mean, I know, but you know, she deserves. Yeah, the watch it on land you should probably watch it somewhere where there is a refrigerator nearby because there's very scary refrigerator business in that movie yeah wait is it not i thought it was about drug addiction yeah and when you do too much drugs that your refrigerator you know threatens you tries to attack you in there Yeah So how much research did you do in your drug dealer role on euphoria Martha um I did the same amount of research that I do for every acting job, which is I read the script and memorize my lines that's about the amount of research I think most actors should do most of the
Starting point is 00:20:53 time but when I hear about how deeply entrenched some of them get to play a character that you know doesn't end up having that much depth. It's pretty it's pretty wild I did hear that it I did hear About a woman who was similar to that character a real-life Sociopath that was that I guess is a little bit of research. Oh Okay. Yeah, that's not bad Your little little little bit of insight there into that behavior Yeah, yeah, I
Starting point is 00:21:35 Say, you know Since you're a drug dealer on that show you probably are you probably threw away your Burner phone so you should probably get another phone say that's probably why you haven't heard from them. I the And you know when you're on a cruise ship with somebody else people lots of people like have you know walkie talkies to communicate with each other uh, you know on the boat find each other or whatever but um Now they've got this thing called whatsapp and you can just They took all the fun out of walkie talkies because you can just what's app with people? Uh, you know On a ship great stories don't take a walkie talk WhatsApp with people, you know, on a ship. Great stories. Don't take a walkie talkie with you, Doug.
Starting point is 00:22:28 I know, but, you know, the other person would be like, why don't we just text on WhatsApp and then just be like, yeah, you're right. You know, it's like these horror movies now that it's the first thing they have to do in the script is figure out why the character's cell phones aren't working. That's so true. They immediately got to get that out of the way the snowstorm I Can't believe I can't get a service out here. It's there always out somewhere with always. Yeah. Yeah Commercial break maybe sell some phones or phone service or some shit and we'll be right back

Starting point is 00:24:55 Slash dlm all lowercase back to this show We are back and Thanks again for those recommendations for planes movies on planes and trains and automobiles and the first game we're going to play today is called axle F you you of You of course is short for University Axel F University Are you qualified to attend? How many out of there's been four of them now Sam Levine how many actual Foley movies have you seen I've seen all four done From beginning to end all four of them of course Some big fan. Yeah, I could do one better. I even saw the unaired Axel Foley
Starting point is 00:25:48 Beverly Hills Cop pilot for CBS they made over 10 years ago. Wow. How'd you like that? It was fine, but I could see why it didn't go to series because Eddie Murphy is a guest star in the pilot and then they were like, yeah, you're going to be in every episode, right? He said, nah, I'll just pop in whenever my schedule allows it and CBS was like, oh, that's not gonna work. So they didn't pick it up. Well, there you go. There you go. But it's fun. Barry Sonnfeld directed it. Yeah, I didn't know we had a Beverly Hills Cop Scholar in the mix, but that's cool. Gareth, how many of them have you seen 75% of those released to the public and I did not see the pilot Thank you for clarifying yeah Well, I just said I don't have the inside track I thought I knew people until that
Starting point is 00:26:42 With so you didn't see that this latest one correct and is it because you got Axel Foley fatigued from the first three or you know I want to I plan on watching it. I will watch it Yeah, sure wish I had yeah, what's exactly I didn't realize I was gonna be tested Yeah, yeah, I was pretty lazy fair until now Okay What about you Martha? Have you seen any of the Beverly Hills cop movies? I saw the first one in the theaters and didn't laugh that much You know, you think is hilarious like that trucks smashed into that parked car I
Starting point is 00:27:23 Just and then the next parked car and then the next one. I don't remember having really high expectations and then not laughing that much. I knew there was a second one and I know there's a new one. Didn't know there was one in between the new one and the second one so thank you for just helping me learn that today I guess. Well, Martha, even though you haven't seen them all, you still have a chance in this game because you can guess because each question is multiple choice. I will say, I will state a little factoid that applies to either
Starting point is 00:28:06 Beverly Hills Cop one Beverly Hills Cop two or the more recent one. Axel F three is of course dead to me and most people and me. Yep. Put me on that list. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Not a single question again. Where the pilot is the answer. No, no, no. I didn't think to put the pilot as an option, because of course, that was for television and nobody saw it but you. OK. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Yeah. All right. So let's go alphabetical order by first name. So, Gareth, you're up first. If you miss, then Martha gets a crack. When I miss, she gets a 50 50. And then if she misses it miss then Martha gets a crack when I missed 5050 and then if she misses it then Sam gets the gimme and So on and so on Got it. Yep
Starting point is 00:28:56 Okay I'm gonna sneeze hang on Just part of the game is this an ad break seems like it's part of the game. Is this an ad break? Seems like it's part of the game. Well, he muted himself. Oh, did he? That's how serious this is. You guys, is he OK? Martha, I don't know what part of town you're in, but can you check on Doug? I'm actually down in Lomito, which is about 30 miles south of L.A.
Starting point is 00:29:20 But if you give me a minute. Yeah, I can. I'm in Doug's house. He's he's gone. Oh, wow, Gareth, you got there fast.A. But if you give me a minute. Yeah, I'm in Doug's house. He's he's gone. Oh, wow. Gareth, you got this. So, yeah. Oh, no. Yeah. No. So I don't know what we do here. They'll be all right.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Yeah. Let me tell you guys about that. Beverly, you walk us through that pilot. So Brandon T. Jackson, who you remember him from Tropic Thunder, he the younger guy on Tropic Thunder. He played Axel's son. Oh, God. In the pilot.
Starting point is 00:29:48 Of course. And so, you know, knowing that, which again, I realized never made it to series. So I was surprised when in Axel F, he's only got a daughter. Hey, Doug's back. Yeah, he's got the one daughter who just doesn't, you know, she's mad that he stopped contacting her. Are so annoying. Yeah, they really. Jesus.
Starting point is 00:30:16 Like so, so clingy. Lord get over it. He made a choice. But they have, you know, they get the banter throughout the movie and you know It's really suspenseful whether or not they're gonna repair their relationship But I'll tell you what when you're mad at somebody and then they you know Do something that keeps you from dying you usually turn around a little bit on that person You know just maybe a little bit you come around a little bit on that person. You know just maybe a little bit you come around a little bit Okay, so all of that being said
Starting point is 00:30:50 Gareth you're up first all right Beverly Hills cop 1 Billy else cop 2 or axle F Has the most spoken F bombs Oh Which of those three gives the most fucks most spoken f-bombs. Oof. Which of those three gives the most fucks? Oof. Boy, oh boy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:12 You know, if I knew we were going to play this game, I could have done something about this. But I would guess, I'm guessing they're not going to push it in the most recent one. I'll guess the first one, they probably started out strong, I would guess. Oh, gee, Beverly Hills cop. Yeah. Is your guess.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Correct. That guess is incorrect. Ah, fuck. Hey, Martha. There you go. Um, I feel like Gavin unfair advantage because I was alive when it was in theaters and Sam and Garareth were not born yet But um, so that wasn't right. I'm gonna say axle F
Starting point is 00:31:57 Wow Martha here we go you're on the board One point for Martha It of course is unfair, but no, no. That's totally I think I was alive to Martha. How old do you think we are? You're not you're neither one of these even been born yet. That's true. That's real. But Martha, any and all
Starting point is 00:32:22 Beverly Hills cop movies have been released in my lifetime same here I was 30 when the first one came out. How about that? I? Was in my mid 50s, so this is how That explains the sneeze mute. Yeah, I Didn't even mean to mute it. That was just a bonus mean to mute it that was just a bonus. The sneeze just consumed you. That was how violent the sneeze was. It was like no stopping it.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I spilled coffee everywhere. Oh, we deserve to hear that. Oh man. Yeah, that was wild. Okay, so, um, Beverly Hills Cop 2 was the least, is the classiest, if you ask me. Wow, the Johnny Scott.
Starting point is 00:33:04 Directed by Tony Scott. Only 28 f bombs. Wow. That one. Beverly Hills Cop had 60, which is still a pretty impressive number. But Martha was still right. The actual F has more. I mean, it's right there in the title pretty much. Ninety five.
Starting point is 00:33:21 And wow, it's funny. That's one place that I did some research said ninety five and another place said, Oh boy, there will cop the original number two or axle F which one Has the most s-bombs or gives the most shits Wow, yeah It's a great question and I'll say Og Beverly Hills cop you're, Beverly Hills Cop has the most instances of someone saying shit or bullshit. Yeah, why not?
Starting point is 00:34:14 Or shitty shit shit. Shitty shit shit shit hits. Yeah. Shitty shitty bang bang. Which was a working title of the film. Daddy's Correct correct the very first Beverly Hills cop has the most shits I think maybe Axel has grown up a little bit you know because he used to just say you know and shit at the end of
Starting point is 00:34:37 everything and he's probably of course the least shits were in the Beverly Hills cop 2 at 9 Axel F has 40 and Barry Hills cop the original has 44 shits in and the you miss it Martha gets a chance if more than even want to think of is the winner if you both miss Sam will be the winner oh boy Gareth which one Beverly Hills cop there was cop two or actual F is the winner of team of the year at the Cola Awards that's the California on location awards. Oh my god. So what team came up with locations great enough to win the Cola? I just what an honor it is to even hear about being nominated for a Cola. Well, Uh, well, Doug, I don't know if I'm being honest with you. So, um, you don't just know this. Oh, yeah, this, this, this is not something I know.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Um, but I have not heard, uh, Beverly Hills top two as the winning answer. And I feel like when you lack a lot of swear words, you're going to have to make up with it somehow. And maybe that was locations. So why don't we just say BC2 It's certainly the most Beautifully shot very those come well. I remember they have the big They have the big mansion that he pretends he lives in that hell of a spot
Starting point is 00:36:20 Yeah, and most of the rooms they have conversations in are dark with lights streaming into the well I feel like I'm not the blinds. I don't love hearing that but go ahead They're outside of that movie sometimes too, but no that is not the correct answer Martha which one do you think won that award the original Beverly Hills cop or axle F won that award the original Beverly Hills cop or axle F I don't hardly remember the first one and I haven't seen axle F. So Let me think logically
Starting point is 00:36:59 Which one do you think had a great team of location personnel Finding those great locations that are so memorable I guess I'm gonna guess axle F axle F is Correct Martha you did it you won this game without with seeding the least amount of very little cop movies Axel F won like that's part of why I the least amount of very little cop movies Axel F won like that's part of why I
Starting point is 00:37:29 Picked this particular question because why would axle F be winning an award when it just came out? Mm-hmm came out a couple weeks ago But it's one for I guess the team had to find all the locations in 2023. So that's when it won the award. Before the movie came out. Yeah, before the movie. What if they cut all those scenes? Well, it doesn't matter because I assume that the award is more about the team of people
Starting point is 00:37:59 who find these locations. It still doesn't make a lot of sense. So wait a minute, you're telling me I could win Oscars or Emmys for shows I've been cut out of Oh man this changes everything Locations even if they didn't make it into the movie, but I gotta say about actual F is it is Wild how much it feels like they're really doing crazy You know gunplay and helicopters
Starting point is 00:38:26 and shit in like spots that are just, you know, very recognizable as LA. It's funny how they get from Beverly Hills to downtown and back like rather quickly like they're next to each other. But it's still, it was impressive to watch because it's very, you live in LA you spend the whole time, you know recognizing all the spots Okay, so Martha won that game as we all know means she gets to go first in our next game and The one that determines it all and we will play that after this break. We'll be right back We are back and oh look at the time we've missed I spent too much time on that first game but it was so much fun the sneezing fit the gotcha yeah
Starting point is 00:39:13 it really did that was really a time-consuming sneeze and um a rare solo sneeze I didn't have a follow-up sneeze at all oh just Just that we we don't know Doug cuz you chose to mute it So says you We listen to this and we're like This is all cut out out the the hit my phone so violently, I couldn't get it away from my sneezing face. Okay. So we're going to play a game that's newish that I'm still tweaking and beta testing and we'll
Starting point is 00:40:13 get Sam's opinions about how unfair it is. But Martha gets to go first and it's a game called always bet on Yourself hmm. That's right Each of you starts this game with 100 points You'll each get two turns to try to add to your points Martha will be up first. I will give Martha three answers and Then you tell me based on hearing the three options you tell me how much you want to bid on yourself being able to answer that particular question from you can wager one to 99 points. Once you've bid you'll get the question and the answers and you'll pick which one you think is the right one. And each of you will do this twice.
Starting point is 00:41:06 Oh, boy. And we'll take turns. But since Martha won our first game, and people discovered playing this game previously that the first person is at a little bit of a disadvantage because of the bidding and not knowing what the other people are going to bid. So on this first round, Martha, once you hear your three
Starting point is 00:41:31 answers, you get the option to bid on that one or pass it and just get a new set of answers and then that the ones you passed will move on to the next person, which would be Gareth. Okay. All right. So I hope that all made sense. Yes. Martha, here are the first set the Aristocats, or Winnie the Pooh in Winnie's various adventures. Those are the answers to my question. Would you like to pass those answers to Gareth, or would you like to bid anywhere from 1 to 99 points? I'm going to bid 99 points even though I'm not confident. I just want to make it exciting
Starting point is 00:42:37 Well that is very exciting that is exciting because once you get left with one it'll probably that'd be probably hard to come back from but Not impossible Once you get left with one, that'd be probably hard to come back from, but not impossible. And so for 99 points, it'll give you a very strong lead in the game in the first question, if you get it right. Which, I'll say the options again. Call the snake Napoleon the dog or Winnie the Pooh. Which Disney character is not voiced by Sterling Holloway? Okay, is it against the rules to Google Sterling Holloway? That's a great question.
Starting point is 00:43:25 Is against the rules to do it loudly enough for us to hear or take the amount of time that we take to do that. But if you could do it quietly and quickly, then you could probably get away with it. Can you say the answers but also include the movie for you? Which one is not voiced by Sterling Holloway? Ah the snake in the juggle book, Napoleon the dog in the aristocats or Winnie the poo in various like for instance the blustery day would be one. I know I'm, that's his voice by Pat Butrum. I knew it. And Sterling Holloway, of course, was also, he was in Aristocats as Brokfort the mouse. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:44:31 I'm surprised you didn't remember that, Mark. Everybody knows that, Martha. Yeah, that's interesting. Pretty common knowledge. Yeah, I'm a little embarrassed for you right now. Shut up, you liars. Okay. Oh, come on. So.
Starting point is 00:44:44 That's a crushing defeat. Yeah, but boy, you went out guns blazing. It was exciting, though. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:44:52 I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:45:00 I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. your hundred points you want to wager. If you wager 99, you risk being tied for a last with Martha. Well, what the hell Sam's going to do? I know you're tinkering with the, with this one, like you said. But I have to say watching Martha go so big was, was awesome.
Starting point is 00:45:21 And I would be a fool to not follow following her footsteps and fall You know, I gotta give you the three choices first. I don't even need them 99 Ninety-nine exciting. That's very exciting. Is it more exciting than what Martha did? A little bit more. Yeah, okay. Well, listen, I Run after she crawled so he's going all in blind Doug. Yep. Yeah, I love this, the Or I should say which one has the shortest running time between Deadpool Deadpool 2 or the Deadpool Well Doug I don't I don't know for sure But just work through it I am trying I want to say axle F
Starting point is 00:46:48 But I'm gonna say I'm just gonna say Deadpool the original Deadpool motion picture that was just correct correct because it's kind of confusing and it would do you think that the everyone will find it exciting if you just got knocked down to just one point I Think people are just rooting for for either one. I mean, that's what that's why the 99 is such a thrilling bet It's either it's all over or wow. What a world Deadpool is the the middle length baby of the trio. You didn't let me finish the cool, directed by the notoriously short day filmer Clint Eastwood. His sets, he only shoots for like five hours a day. That's a gig.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Yeah, so then he also makes the movie a reasonable length because it's only an hour and 31 minutes. He doesn't have any footage. He's just got Jim Carrey and Liam Neeson into their more memorable Ill-advised roles Okay, so We got a hot game going here Sam. We've got two people sitting with one point each. Do you want to join them? So it's really exciting. Let me let me make sure I understand the rules here So we all started with a hundred points. Yeah, And this is one of what will be two rounds, two questions, two questions. And so right now they're both sitting on one point.
Starting point is 00:48:31 Yeah. I'm sitting on 100 points. That's correct. Yeah. And at any point round one or two, the maximum we can bid is 99 points. That's correct. Well, you can bid up to one less.
Starting point is 00:48:42 I didn't want to even be able to bid at all. Cause I don't want anybody to drop to zero, especially in the first round. No, I understand. I'm just saying the second round, the amount of we can bet does not change, correct? It goes all the way up to everything but $1 if you want to go that high. Okay, understood. I will bet one point. It's a great bet. Thanks. Thanks so much. This solid Okay, so Here's your three answers Sam Again, you're supposed to wager after hearing the answers. Oh, right. Sorry. I'm like 99 again
Starting point is 00:49:22 Okay but you know, I I like your Hawaiian version. But you know, I think you'll still want to wager one, maybe not. But here are your three answers. 1984 starring John Hurt, Water Woman, Water Woman, Wonder Woman, 1984 or Class of 1984. Those are your three answers Okay, and you bid $1. I'm still bidding one one point one point So which one of those came out closest to the year in its title?
Starting point is 00:50:03 Now I definitely know it's not Wonder Woman and Class of 1984, I think it's a horror-ish movie and it used to be on TV a lot. It's got a very young Michael J. Fox 84, but I think the film 1984 did? Is that your answer? I'm going to say yes. I'm going to say the film 1984. The film 1984, one of many that have been made, but the only one with John Hurt came out in 1984. And of course, Wonder Woman was 2020 and Class of 84 was just two years off.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Came out in 82, which is so bizarre to be like, hey, two years into the future. Imagine. Yeah. And it's really bleak. Well, 2012 came out in 2009. Yeah, and it's really bleak 2012 came out in 2009. Yeah, there you go. There you go Sam. You are Very popular Southern California freeway 101, okay And we go back to Martha I'm gonna give to give you your three options, Martha. OK, they are.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Summer catch, summer rental or summer school. How much would you like to wager of your one point? I guess you have to wager one point. Could I wager a half a point so that I give? Oh, I like There's still a chance of a competition between me and Gareth. I love it. All right half a point on this question Which one of those movies summer cat summer rental or summer school was not directed by Carl Reiner directed by Carl Reiner. Oh real gut punch to Sam because of course he knows. I got friends in all these movies. I feel like summer school starred Carrot Top
Starting point is 00:52:19 so I'm gonna say summer schooliner ever directed Carrot Top, so I'm gonna say summer school. I mean, your logic is impeccable if in fact Carrot Top was in summer school. He should have been. Because Carl Reiner never did direct him, that's true, but that is, I'm sorry to say that is incorrect. And the only one that Carl didn't direct is summer catch. It was about baseball. and that's where Martha was going. I believe that was probably where it was.
Starting point is 00:53:06 I feel like I should actually get a point for that, for how close I was. I don't disagree. I know it's highly unorthodox, Doug. I'm going to give you half a point because that's what you ended up at, is half a point. That's awesome. Thank you. the the the the the to get that. Yeah, I know. That's just not me. It's not my style. I've never been like that. But boy, it was fun to bet 99 at first. And now I'm really ruin that that wager. I'm going to go all in Doug. You know me, I've played this game hard the whole time. So let's go. Let's go one point. Spanish big. Here we go. The options again, you know, obviously, you want to wait
Starting point is 00:54:07 and no matter what the options are correct, but they are Babylon elephant or water for elephants. Mm hmm. Babylon elephant or water for elephants. And the question is, which one doesn't have any elephants in it? Which one doesn't have any elephants in it? Boy and mine just has two which is also interesting And here I am equally lost as I was at the beginning
Starting point is 00:54:42 Well, Doug, I've been on the show. I haven't done 26 but I've always gotten something right and this would be my first time without anything right. What was the second movie? Elephant? Right. Just called Elephant? Okay, I'll say that elephant I'll say that elephants Doesn't have any elephants You did it you you have secured second place with two boys
Starting point is 00:55:21 Wow elephant does not have elephants Babylon of course has an elephant. It's all over everybody, right? that's that's also crazy that's that's the Gus Van Sant elephant Yeah, exactly. I don't read there's nothing funny about that. Yeah, go ahead. Oh, yeah, no laughs in in a movie called elephant Okay, so Sam. Yep. I Don't know what could go wrong here. I guess it could be exciting if you wager all 101 points they could Or you could make a safe bet let me give you the your answers Yeah, I'm gonna get a pick from this time. I want to hear the answers before I wager okay here the answers, okay? Super high me the greatest movie ever rolled or chronic on episode 420 a new dope
Starting point is 00:56:21 Those are the three options Those are the three options. So, uh, I'm playing. He's got, uh, Gareth has two points. Is that? That's right. Those footsteps you hear are mine. I'm going to, I'm going to wager. 97.
Starting point is 00:56:39 Oh, okay. For 97 points. Yep. Uh, which one is it? Seven. Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven!
Starting point is 00:56:49 Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven!
Starting point is 00:56:57 Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Oh, seven! Super High Me, the greatest movie ever rolled or Chronicon.
Starting point is 00:57:14 God, this is a tough one. You know, I like to get things right, Doug. So I got to think about this. I feel like Super High Me was very popular. And everybody liked it right with me and I feel like that problem so it's super high me the greatest movie ever rolled and chronic on chronic on episode 420 a new dope one of those on Pluto the other two are currently not available right I mean it was what my gut said and this really is just for funsies so I will say super high me well it's nice to hear that your gut is wrong the the the the
Starting point is 00:58:35 the the the the the That is correct Martha finishes out with one point Sam. Yep is on Cameo he will do anything you ask him to do To plug for the rough stuff. Okay, go for it So I have a film coming out called City of Dreams and opens August 30th in theaters everywhere
Starting point is 00:59:01 I'm told so wherever you are if that counts is everywhere the chances are this movie will be playing near you. Dreams. Well and I also look forward to your next appearance when you will probably recommend dream a little dream. You are correct and what was coming next Doug. And after that probably. Dreamer no dream house of goo cheaper by the dozen two for the Road House.
Starting point is 00:59:29 Party Monsters Balls of Furious seven years into Better Off Dead Presidents was where we were going. Wow. Wow. What a journey. It's been great. I can't believe I made it 26 episodes in. This is a journey that started back in April of 2022. It's impressive. I hope somebody jumps on the internet and types it all out for
Starting point is 00:59:52 I hope so too. Post it somewhere. Martha, Martha Kelly, another terrific appearance on the show. So much fun having you here. Doug, what would you like to promote? Terrific appearance on the show. So much fun having you here. What would you like to promote? There's an animated show on Netflix called Carol and the end of the world. And I do the voice of Carol and I would love it if people would watch it.
Starting point is 01:00:21 But I also will never know if you don't. So no. That's healthy that's a healthy attitude. Yeah just go on go on Martha's social media and say I loved it you know and you don't even have to watch it. You definitely I don't ever check people's stories. And my business. Well thank you very much Gareth Reynolds. the the the the the
