Doug hates candy wrappers, screaming babies, sticky seeds with 50 azepop or kernels in his teeth.
There's still not one that he won't see, cause Doug loves movies!
Hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love movies.
This is Doug Loves Movies coming to you from the Never Not Funny Studios in the Valley of San Fernando on Monday, July 25th to Ocean's Eleven.
So you'll be hearing this probably anywhere from four to six days after it was recorded.
The number one movie in the country right now is Captain America, which I have not seen yet.
But I most certainly will because i like superheroes who carry guns
i'll be performing for three nights at one of my favorite clubs in the country acme comedy club
in minneapolis st paul area it's in minneap august 16 through the 18 and as regular listeners of this
show know all of my tour dates are listed at douglovesmovies.com
my guests today are the hosts of a brand new podcast how many eps you got so far two eps
two two you're two in the deuce the deuce and uh i'll have a good name for there'll be three by
the time this bears okay so you'll be three in. Our third and final one. Yeah, you'll be looking forward to that. And hopefully it'll be living up to its name by the third ep.
It's called Rock Solid.
Please welcome Pat Francis and Gary Lucy.
Hello, Doug.
Hello, Doug.
Did you guys team up because you both have last names that are girl names?
Oh, man.
This interview is over.
Oh, yeah.
I'm coming out with some hard balls.
And in the third chair today is Matt Belknap, who some of you may know as the producer of
this podcast, Doug Loves Movies, and co-star of, what do you call yourself on Never Not
Funny?
Co-host.
Co-host.
I like co-star.
That's nice.
That sounds way too big.
I appreciate the elevation.
For what that is.
Yeah, exactly.
And Jimmy wouldn't like that.
Nope, not at all.
Yeah, and so in here today, you will be administering the Leonard Maltin game.
That is true, for the first time ever.
Very exciting.
You've heard a lot of Leonard Maltin games, so you know how it goes, and you know how I like it.
Sam Levine, I should mention, is on assignment.
how I like it.
Sam Levine, I should mention, is on assignment.
I love when they say that on the TV or the radio,
when they say some so-and-so's not there because they're on assignment.
Like, isn't their job being on camera
or being on the show, isn't that their assignment?
They've been assigned to no longer be on camera.
They've been asked to not be here for a while.
Jim Misklosewski knows what he did.
So that was
for the listeners to get used to everybody,
that was Gary's voice, and then
Pat sounds like this.
Hello, everybody. I sound like this, and my
cans are on my head.
And Rock Solid is...
You produce that as well, Matt?
Yeah, I'm manning the
dials of that.
We call it spreading himself too thin. Yeah, yeah you're gonna start to see a real decrease in quality on all these shows
well that's the i just found this out recently and then now i just had a great and i was inspired
for a spin-off show of this show yeah and uh so we'll have to we'll have to figure out how to make that work but in
the meantime you want to tease it here well it at work i'm just playing with it i you know people
like to respond immediately what they think about things but just let it simmer for a second you
guys don't respond immediately but uh a show called doug hates sports and much like Doug Loves Movies, we won't talk about sports at all.
We'll talk about Broadway shows and other various topics, just like we do on Doug Loves Movies, where we rarely talk about movies.
No, we talk about movies probably as much as most sports radio talks about sports.
Because those guys will talk about American Idol.
They'll get off track sometimes, those sports-loving dudes.
But Rock Solid is what exactly?
You guys both know a lot about music.
Well, I think Gary said, if you look at the description on iTunes, Gary came up with this.
It was, for those about to chit-chat about rock, we salute you.
Yep.
I think that pretty much says it.
Yeah.
Yeah, we just shoot the breeze about rock.
And here's our hook.
Pat's kind of a classic rocker, and I'm like a hipster indie rocker.
Indie doofus.
Oh, so that's fun.
So you just insult each other a lot then.
A little bit, yeah.
Your taste, not your...
We're still playing nice up to the third episode.
Today, I think it's going to go.
We've unlaced the gloves,
but the gloves haven't come off yet.
We're going to mix it.
And then we try to have a game
or a topic that takes up most of the show.
And then we'll do some reviews
and throw out a couple of websites we like
and new releases and just stuff like that.
I want to help people...
It sounds like my show,
but about rock instead.
It is.
We almost called it
Gary and Pat love music
yeah
I've gotten a lot of
yeah good movie
recommendations off your show
and that's
that's kind of the goal
like hopefully
get people to
enjoy more music
and you know
hear about things that they
might not know
yeah exactly
or you know
maybe it'll remind them
of something
oh yeah I forgot
I love that
and that sort of thing.
But you guys are funny also.
It's a funny conversation.
Yeah, we try to be funny.
You don't force it.
No.
There's no reason to always be funny.
If it's there, it's there.
We don't have a paper full of pre-written bits.
It's impossible to never not be funny.
It is called Never Not Funny Presents.
It is Never Not Funny Presents.
Rock solid.
And we take that title about as seriously as Never Not Funny Takes It.
In that we cannot keep that up.
How does Jimmy feel about the new podcast, baby?
Oh, well, it was Jimmy and I initially were the ones who were saying,
hey, we should have a spinoff because, you know, we work too hard
and someone else should do some of the work.
So we thought, like, Pat's a great too because he's on our show so much and he's i think it was
a way to get me off their show people were clamoring for more pat francis but not on our
show but uh yeah so so we were like well pat loves music and and that's a great thing for him and
pat had the idea to bring g along, you know, because we thought
it's always good to have two people talking,
at least.
And it's been fun.
Tell that to Bill Burr, Greg Proops.
Yeah.
Who are the other solo ones?
Larry Miller, does he have anybody on with him?
I don't know the answer to that.
Could you do that?
I could never do that.
Just talk to myself.
I could do it,
but I would be embarrassed by the result.
You know, like, I don't think I'd be happy with it, and I'd be shocked that people would listen to myself. I could do it, but I would be embarrassed by the result. You know, like, I wouldn't, I don't
think I'd be happy with it, and I'd be shocked
that people would listen to it. I wonder if any of those guys,
like, I know Mike Schmidt has a
producer in there with him. I wonder if any of those guys are
just by themselves doing it, because that would be
really, that would be,
they just turn on a thing and do it. Well, like, Mark Maron,
his monologues, I think he's kind of alone when he does
them, but that's just for a few minutes.
And it's usually to set up what's gonna happen right so that's okay someone
told me that uh bill maher recorded an album in a studio like he didn't have a crowd oh that's
interesting did like a stand-up album but just in the studio that could be just as fun to listen
yeah i mean i guess that's basically a podcast you really need the laughter to know when it's
being funny i guess maybe they didn't put laughter in i know no i i have not heard this by the way this is just so this here's
the perfect comedy album i know just put the laughter in later yeah wow every every joke
really hit didn't it check out my new podcast gary loves filibusters talk and talk and talk
my new cd potty mouth comes out august 30th on comedy central records and i did two i
taped two shows and then you know took all the stuff where one table got out of control and had
to be thrown out out of out of that's not in the album and then just called the best stuff from the
two shows but it sort of feels like cheating but at the same time i think why aren't i just doing
six or seven shows
i mean it makes it arduous to to edit it you know so i i tend to pick big chunks because i want to still sound like and feel like you know just one performance because it's just one album you know
i i would ultimately i'd love to do taking it back to rock what pearl jam and some other bands have
done i'd like to go out on
a tour where then you the cds of all the nights are available and and if you if some lunatic wants
to hear the differences between louisville and and uh oklahoma city they they can but other people
can just pick their town or just one and you know and and i'd be honest about it that it's essentially
the same act every night but that i I ad-lib quite a bit.
Well, I would, I mean, as far as music goes,
my favorite albums are the ones that are over one,
would hopefully be one night,
but over one or two nights.
I don't like when like...
Like a hot August night.
Yeah, I don't like when like a Def Leppard tours
for two years and then they take,
each track is from a different play.
I mean, that's not a live album.
That's, to me, it's not.
I want to hear if there's a mistake,
if a string breaks or whatever happens.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
They'll just take all perfect versions of the songs.
Yeah, now they're going to listen to 9,000 versions of Animal Eyes
and pick the best one.
And weren't you telling me even that Van Halen did a live album
where Eddie went in afterwards and re-dubbed everything?
Yeah, Eddie and Alex, this is in Sammy Hager's book, Eddie and Alex went in afterwards and re-dubbed everything eddie and alex this is in sammy heger's book eddie and alex went in they re-dubbed all their parts
and then when they re-dubbed them they played them a little bit faster than they did
originally so then sammy they had to call sammy and sammy had to sing the whole entire concert
in three hours in a studio and it was just like well that's not a live album at all
it's not at all.
And I wish you, the night when the people, the table got unruly,
those should be bonus tracks, iTunes-only bonus tracks.
Totally.
I would buy those. That's where the buck's at.
Yeah, those are the kind of suggestions I get on Twitter all the time.
I always have to write back and try to be as nice as possible about it,
but also be like, I hate that idea.
Because, I mean i that is kind of
i did give me a copy i did toy with the idea of putting out an album on a major label that had
the whole right incident but the trouble is it colors the whole rest of the show that's true in
ways that like it would only be interesting if i just put out that show as an album and i don't
you know i think that that's another thing about podcasting
that's so great is that even when things go wrong or weird uh there's something interesting about
listening to that later you know people love that yeah feeling of real like unvarnished but it's
you know that's going to lead to be able to package more things that were like well here's
a conversation that happened now you can you know yeah watch it or whatever but uh that's what i people keep saying to me about the
podcast the podcast itself yeah why don't you uh film it and put it you know sort of like never
not funny does you know and i'm just like because i want to do a pod i want to do an audio podcast
right i want i love radio and i love the idea that that people need stuff to listen to and they can't necessarily watch.
So I want to be watching it off the table entirely.
You know what I mean?
Because I don't want anyone envious of the people that get to watch it, the ones that just get to listen to it.
That's like that cutoff that existed for the longest time when I was very small was the black and white TVs versus color TVs.
Oh, yes.
You know, like, make one person feel bad
because they're seeing the black and white version.
It's just like,
color's not going to change your life that much.
Wasn't that Brady Bunch, yeah,
where, like, his hair turns green or something like that?
What, is it funny?
I can't tell.
It was the black and white.
Yeah, did they do much, like, on I Love Lucy,
did anything ever hinge on what a color was?
Like, you better get me that red dress, Ricky.
Yeah, they had to write around all that.
That was a spot on impression.
That one time that Lucy went in blackface
to do her Josephine Baker thing to sneak into the show,
that works in color.
Yeah, black and white color.
Oh, that's right, that's fine. That doesn't matter. fine then i have no problem with it as long as it wasn't like blue
face then you totally miss what you're doing yeah that's why they had to invent color to to fight
racism yeah now doug when you when you're when you're a guest on never not funny now doug and
when you leave the house you go oh that's right there's cameras and i gotta gotta shave and maybe
get a shower and like for this you can just come i can just's cameras i gotta gotta shave and maybe get a shower and
like for this you can just come i can just roll in i see what you're saying about my outfit today
no no i'm not saying about that though but you think about that pat i do think about it no it's
very true not funny as i'm like ah that's right i gotta get people do i never think of it myself
but people do always say that they're like i think of saying to people and i stop myself i even stop
myself just now that's another thing thing I like about podcasting over television
is that you don't have to wear makeup and
outfits and all the other stuff. I mean, I'm not a complete slob.
I'm not looking for a license to be a slob. I'm just saying that
that's a whole other thing that you go through with television. I think you're more relaxed and comfortable
if you don't have to worry about what you look like.
You can just be here and just talk.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, if we had ugly voices.
I get it, guys.
You don't like Never Not Funny.
No, but that's the thing about that show is that people do love being able to see it.
There are plenty of people that want to see my podcast, and they ask me all the time,
but I just like what it is right now. Yeah, yeah. I think that's totally valid. it there's plenty of people that want to see my podcast and and they ask me all the time but i
just like what it is right now and yeah yeah i think that's totally valid might change to a tv
show at some point but yeah but then i think that then that becomes a different thing like you can't
do on television no matter what the network you can't just do this kind of thing where there's no
stopping and there's no really there's a little preparation but basically it's just a conversation
like people don't at least right now i think people can't handle that on television because
they when you turn on a tv you expect more praise that's what's been discussed is like there's been
a little conversation about why not if you just film your show and put it on tv or the internet
and you just you just show it as it is you don't try to do it as a tv production right it's like
well do i want to sit there without any makeup on and and like only one or two cameras do i want it to look
like public access because i know as a viewer i would think oh this is garbage like i'd have to
really be invested in the people and what they're talking about exactly to just watch people sitting
around talking especially on tv internet's a little bit different because like that's more
some you can kind of sit there and watch it at work or whatever but it's still your it's how you're presenting yourself
in audio you don't have to worry about how you're visually presenting yourself but once you put a
camera on then you're like oh we gotta and it's boring to watch static shots of things like you
know michael bay and and all those types have made it so no one can you know you have to cut every
half a second so do you guys have shows
where i i don't even want to like i'm not sure what any of the real housewives look like but
my wife watches them all so you know i'll be i'll be like like doing something but but so like like
i've heard every episode and you know i kind of have like favorite characters and stuff like that
but then yeah like so it's kind of i think we're i think we're heading back to like a new golden
age of the uh of like the radio.
Theater of the mind.
Yeah.
Theater of the mind.
Exactly.
Well, I think it just, there's just going to be a certain audience segment that it appeals
to.
Like I, I even think some podcast listeners will sort of come and go based on, you know,
like, oh, I had a job for a while where I had to commute every day.
So I listened to lots of podcasts.
Now I don't have to commute.
So it's harder for me to to do that like as as they start to become available in more places right like where all your devices you
could just easily hit a button and hear your favorite podcast yeah that could be that could
work out great for for us podcasters do you have an app doug do you have an iphone app i don't and
i i really really should but you know that's a question for Matt as well because we work together.
But there's so many things we should have.
We're not ambitious enough for sure.
We actually are.
We are working on something that will include that.
So down the road, that's definitely coming in.
I really like Marc Maron's iPhone app.
I love it.
It's really easy to use.
I think that's just the Libsyn, the hosting company.
You can do apps through that.
And yeah, it's great.
You can just basically get everything directly on your device instead of having to sync or whatever.
Cool.
Yeah, that's definitely coming to anyone listening who wants that for this show.
It'll be coming around.
Everything's so changing.
I like it.
It just keeps changing.
Yeah.
Not certain, but change.
Thanks, Garrett.
Amen. You want to sit around and talk about but you like
the but you like the modern rock which is like in in and of itself a ridiculous title right like
right exactly like when you listen to modern rock radio stations they're mostly playing older stuff
it's true yeah yeah it's all from the uh from the 80s and 90s there's the bodines
yeah and uh pat's nephew is here.
Kids don't even listen to rock anymore, I don't think.
They just, I mean, not only don't they buy it anymore,
but I don't know what they like.
They like just some drum and bass or something.
Yeah, I don't know.
I don't know either.
Yeah, but I'm flying the flag.
I love it.
I thought the obsession would lift as I got older,
but it just seems to deepen.
Actually, I just read a story that album sales actually went up this past year.
For CDs or vinyl?
Well, vinyl's been on the increase.
They're including...
Yeah, more people are getting weird about having vinyl.
You know what the top-selling vinyl album was last year?
No.
Abbey Road by the Beatles.
Yeah, exactly.
I think that's a Beatles album.
That is a Beatles album.
Yeah.
It's kind of like
people like this,
they want to hear it
how they used to listen to it
or how
the parents might have
listened to it.
They want to have
the hassle of listening
to it.
They want to flip it over
in between.
They want it
scratched and ruined
every time
the dog bumps into the...
In college, someone would go, can I borrow your album?
No.
Because you're going to bring it back.
It's going to be unlistenable.
Yeah, because that person was a DJ and they used it to scratch with.
Don't loan your records to a DJ.
Good advice.
Did any of you guys go to Comic-Con?
I'm fresh back from Comic-Con today.
Not this year. Is there a big music component to that-Con? I'm fresh back from Comic-Con today.
Not this year.
Is there a big music component to that at all?
What goes on down there music-wise?
Anything?
Nothing, really.
Darth Innovator-ette performing?
Yeah, I mean, there might be an occasional link of some kind,
but that's interesting that you brought that up because there really is a...
I watched at the very end of the Comic-Con for i think seven years now and don't yell at me
uh josh whedon josh whedon fans if i'm wrong but for a certain number of years now they've been
playing uh once more with feeling the the buffy musical episode oh that's cool uh at the end like
a sing-along version nobody sings along though because even if you're a fan of it it's the songs
are not like something you just sit there and sing in a group.
But I mean,
they have a lot of lyrics that are moving the plot points forward more than trying to be like just a musical number.
I mean,
it's,
it's amazing.
It's an amazing episode in that it was such a,
uh,
a risk to do like a weird,
you know,
musical episode.
Can we say groundbreaking with,
we could,
yeah,
it was like,
it did what cop rock
tried to do but succeeded with it but i think mostly just because even my friend brian posain
who hates musicals love that episode because it's still a good buffy episode you know there's a lot
of singing and you have to admire the effort of like being able to pull that off yeah it's very
complicated but then on top of it it's the episode where all the Scoobies, all the other characters,
find out that when they thought they were saving Buffy from hell, she was actually in heaven.
And then they pulled her back to her hell on earth.
I forgot about that.
And she reveals that in a song.
Because the idea in the episode is that you're honest when you're singing in a musical.
You just say whatever is on your mind. And wasn't the device was that somebody cast a spell and they couldn't
not they couldn't speak they could only say well they could speak but then they break out into
musical numbers whenever they would and and then if they got too emotional they would uh they would
so they would uh combust they would explode so they would catch on fire and die.
That's my big beef with Glee,
is that they don't just, you know,
accept that musical convention of, like,
you know, bursting into song.
They always, like, you know, go to great pains to, like, avoid that.
Like, okay, I'm going to rehearse this song,
and I really want you to listen to the words
because it has a message in it
that I want you to know.
Okay, here we go.
Rather than just, you know,
just sing the damn song and we'll get it.
Yeah.
You know, that's yeah that show's good
I like that
you know
I'm a kind of
semi-fan of it
like whenever they
stop singing
and start talking
I just get like
well this is
I don't know what
they're trying to do here
well Doug
you like Glee
and you like movies
so are you going to
go see the live movie
of Glee
oh yeah
it's coming out
in August or or yeah yeah
i will but here's it was even on my agenda today i was gonna say do you guys hate 3d like i do
yes yes uh it's in 3d right or three glee
that's it but i think it's a yeah let's stop right now always go out out on a laugh. No, but it's in 3D.
So if I could find a 2D theater, I'd see that shit.
Is it?
I'd feel embarrassed and I'd try to get a girl to go with me.
So it at least looks like I was dragged there by somebody.
Or some kids.
Take some kids.
Like you're their uncle.
Yeah, yeah.
Creepy.
It's a little weird.
Uncle Creepy's here.
I think that's probably not the way to go.
Okay.
But I wanted to just bring up a couple
of comic-con things oh yeah move on to other other i can't go because i have a small child i used to
go all the time yeah well they should call it uh movie con because that's all it is yeah it's not
really a launchpad for movie and some tv i saw a panel for uh it's always sunny in philadelphia
with where they got the whole cast but
no but nobody else just the five stars of the show day and day DeVito is out of
out of his tree I should say he's in a tree he's not a monkey he's a man but he
is just I he's either playing nuts or he is nuts but either way it's hilarious
and and they all came out I'm not I'm not a long-time fan of the show
i've only seen a few episodes but like after this panel i am completely sold on on all of them and
and want to watch more episodes of the show because they showed an episode from the upcoming
season which was fun to watch with like you know it was in hall h at comic-con so it's like 6 000
people or however many fit in there yeah and uh so we all 6 000
people watched the it's always sunny philadelphia episode that hasn't come out yet yeah and it was
a kind of a pretty woman parody where uh danny devito's character frank wants to marry a a
whore crack whore and uh so they have to try to make the crack whore not a crack whore and um
other funny complications ensue but they came out in
costumes from an episode where they all wore costumes they wore those same costumes so
everyone went nuts for that because they're at comic-con they're wearing crazy costumes and then
uh but then they were just they were all hilarious it was most hilarious panel i'd been to and then
of course the the weirdo nerdy questions from the audience and they put a camera on them
now. So it's like watching an SNL
sketch because
they step in and they say their
question and then there's always
things where they'll cut back too soon
or they'll cut back to them picking their nose or whatever
and so it's pretty fun
to watch. But it was a very funny panel.
Were there any of these people where they go,
I don't have a question but I do have a comment?
No.
At Hall H, they screen them ahead of time.
Oh, wow.
And get the question ahead of time, which should lead to better questions if you ask me.
But at least they're basically just getting rid of the questions that are just somebody trying to pull something or something like that.
But then they're still at a microphone live in front of a bunch of people. a lot of them still get in stuff like that and and just we you know it's
always funny when you know i love this show i think you guys are great especially you know and
then they name one person on the panel right and then you know everyone else gets all jealous that
they're not the best one according to that one weird weirdo. Did you get any good free things while you were there?
I did.
I went to the image booth there who does a lot of Robert Kirkman stuff,
and they loaded me up.
It was ridiculous.
I don't go there to get free stuff because I can afford to buy stuff,
but it was amazing the stuff they gave me that
was that was a great thing to happen also uh somebody dressed up their two-year-old toddler
and did a good job of it as uh heath ledger's joker
yeah and uh i i threw that i put a picture of that on my twitter feed immediately because
it's it was both amazing and horrifying sounds horrible yeah and um i also i
did a show down there at the tipsy crow i want to thank them uh for having me down there at the uh
downtown during comic-con i did a show and chris hardwick and brian posain popped by
and then i also appeared on uh chris pard pard pardwick chris hardwick did a uh a couple of uh
episodes of his show down there,
one with some of the cast of Doctor Who,
so I wasn't invited to participate in that one
because I just sit there and go.
Aren't you Captain What?
I'd be like, what?
But then he did a second one with Kevin Pereira and Judah Friedlander
and a few other guests.
The guys from Riff Tracks were there.
So anyway, that's going to Nerdist Podcast.
Cool.
So look for that from Comic-Con.
I had a lot of fun doing that.
Did you have accommodations down there, Doug?
I did.
That is key to the enjoyment of Comic-Con.
You drive down and drive back.
It's accommodations are important.
Were you on the outskirts?
We got to coin this, man.
Accommodations. Accommodations. Yeah, accommodations. Were you right the outskirts? We got to coin this, man. Accommodations. Accommodations.
Yeah, accommodations.
Were you right in the thick of it?
Could you walk to your hotel?
I was as close to the convention center
as a hotel can be.
There's three that are all like,
you know, it's right there next to it.
And how far out do you have to book that?
But I had to go across the train tracks.
That is a huge drag.
That's your hometown though, right?
Yeah, I'm from San Diego, yeah.
Can't you just crash at home?
You know, it's like... No. That's your hometown though, right? Yeah, I'm from San Diego, yeah. Can't you just crash at home? You know, it's like...
No.
Here's an example.
There's some sort of festival in Hollywood
and you are attending it every day.
Would you want to crash in Chatsworth?
Oh, it's that far.
Yeah, I lived in...
My mom still lives in El Cajon,
but I did go out there and see her one day
and I took her to see Bridesmaids. Oh, fun. Yeah, I dodged, my mom still lives in El Cajon, but I did go out there and see her one day, and I took her to see Bridesmaids.
Oh, fun.
Yeah, I dodged the Larry Crown bullet.
I thought mom would want to see Larry Crown for sure.
She's like, I've never been that big of a fan of Julia Roberts, and it doesn't look that good.
Smart lady.
You're a great mom.
I will sit through Bridesmaids again happily, because I did want to see it again, because I enjoyed it the first time.
But I saw it at South by Southwest
where everybody roars approval of every comedy.
Right.
And I was sitting there going,
this is hilarious right here, right now,
in this room.
So I look forward to seeing it again.
But then, you know,
obviously public opinion backed me up
when the reviews started coming out.
I was like, okay, good.
It is really good.
Because I loved MacGyver when I saw it.
I still call it MacGyver every time i bring it up macgruber that's probably why nobody went to see it i thought it was macgyver there was some funny bits in there just some really funny stuff
yeah good for that ryan philippe he's up for anything huh i guess so he's his new thing is
he says he's gonna quit acting oh boy Well, he'll be missed. That way madness lies.
What are you going to do with that face?
Too beautiful
to not be in stuff.
It's true.
I bet he could get a job
standing outside
Abercrombie and Fitch,
you know,
like those guys do.
He could totally get that job.
Or he could spin
one of those arrows
on the street corner.
Oh, yeah.
And people would wreck their cars
because he's so gorgeous.
What are you selling? No wonder he's so willing to give up acting. He's got all these options. Yeah. Oh, yeah. People would wreck their cars because he's so gorgeous. What are you selling, Rick?
No wonder he's so willing
to give it back to you.
He's got all these options.
Yeah.
That's right.
There's so much he can do.
He can do whatever I want.
Just give it up.
No big deal at all.
Have you guys seen
any movies lately?
That's the thing
we should talk about.
Yes.
Halfway in.
Halfway into the podcast.
I think the last thing I saw
was Midnight in Paris,
which was over a month ago, probably. But we haven't discussed it on the show i liked it it's still
number 10 at the nation's box office this very weekend i thought it was a return to form for
woody allen if you like woody allen movies oh we did have this discussion okay not on not on not
on mike but i remember you saying that and then i said something like yeah the form of his lesser
comedy right it's still but it's a cute
movie it's very cute it's very lightweight but it's very purple rose of cairo yeah maybe broadway
danny rose i like broadway but you know what i will say owen wilson i feel like i have i've
probably said this to multiple people so i don't know if i've said it somewhere into a microphone
but it's like so few people can actually do the woody allen part in a woody allen movie and owen wilson
is actually one of the people who can can pull it off yeah he pretty much owned it i mean he
he owned it but uh but woody i don't know i i just wish woody allen wasn't wasn't old because
younger younger woody allen is just perfect in his movies like he was just so so great at it and not
just like even some of the more serious ones, or the ones
where he started to shift into seriousness,
have such funny
sidekicks and stuff. And now,
he's either an old man bumbling around,
and it's like, that's embarrassing, or he's
got a surrogate who's like,
that's not the same kind of comedy.
Why don't they do a motion capture, where he
could play himself? I know, I know.
I was thinking of that the last time i saw
the rise of the apes thing i was like if they can make these apes look you know almost good yeah
why can't why why don't they just why why is anybody in movies why not just make all movies
look like that crap well do you remember they were like years ago they were working on making
a cgi bruce lee that was like photorealistic so that they could make another Bruce Lee movie
but like
make it look like
a real movie
I don't know what
happened to that
maybe it's still out there
it might be in litigation
or something
cause you know
every time there's
a commercial
where like you know
Fred Astaire's dancing
with you know
Mop and Glow
or something
yeah whatever
it's always like
what
how can they do this
to a dead dude
yeah
it's a little weird
and his immediate family is probably not alive either so it's not like it's always like what how can they do this to a dead dude yeah it's a little weird and it's in his immediate family's probably not alive either so it's not like it's not like there's
some important benefactor or something i i by the way i hate that motion capture like you hate 3d
like i can't look at that polar express uh oh i know those things are awful those things are
absolutely like my favorite filmmakers yeah he's making all these weird what's you know things with big eyes that
are like oh he's like a he's like a weirdo who's like i don't want to touch humans anymore use the
computer yeah i don't know what that is and also but like one of the things that was amazing about
zemeckis whether he you know is most of a lot his stuff, he actually had a hand in the writing of it. Yeah. And it was really,
he had really good complicated.
Yeah.
You know,
sometimes the ideas got too complicated,
but contact.
Yeah.
But,
uh,
yeah,
well that's,
that's where I probably went off the rails.
There was,
I didn't really care for that movie,
but,
um,
felt like I took a couple of contacts cold tablets hello i'm glad you brought it i'm glad you finally put that movie
in its place yes finally the perfect insult for the movie contact proper context perfect that
but uh i want to say that um i just watched uh i've never seen back to the future but my my son's
like getting up there and uh and you know your Future but my son's like getting up there and you know
Your son's nine
he's not getting up there
Well you know
you could like
show him those kind of movies
Oh okay
I see
It was on his
kid's bucket list
Oh he's nine
we gotta get this over with
Yeah
And then Last Tango
in Paris
and then
We've only got so much time
Nine and a half weeks
There's three
Did you show them all three of them we just
watched the one so far but uh I missed so many movies in the 80s and and uh and especially that
one and um the hell were you doing in 85 that you couldn't go see it was I was I was running too
hard okay so you never saw it the first time around but but I saw it um recently and I was uh
you like oftentimes like like I'm amazed how things don't
hold up but it was really charming and
especially like I never thought much of Leah Thompson's
acting but she was really good.
That was more of a character part for her.
Yeah like when she's the old lady part but then even
as the kid. No I mean even as the
young girl she played very bland
characters that didn't have an interesting
thing like that. But she had
a little something. So that was
great and he liked it and
something that didn't hold up though was
or I imagine didn't hold up was that
Footloose.
Oh, so your nine-year-old got
to see Footloose? No, actually
I watched that. That was just your own
private time thing. My own private screening.
You had a little time to yourself so let's go
back and look at Footloose again.
You know what's funny is, let's go back to Back to the Future.
Yes.
Back to the Future 2 takes place in 2015.
Oh.
That's where they go.
That's where there's hoverboards, so four more years.
Four more years.
And we're going to be hoverboarding around here.
I read Infinite Jest last year that takes place in the future.
It was written in 96 and takes place in the future, which is 2010.
Okay,
and what happens?
Well,
people still
rent videos,
so.
All right.
Tell that one guy
I love books.
Oh,
sorry.
I've seen some movies.
Oh,
yeah,
yeah,
tell him.
AKA NPR.
I have seen,
this guy sees tons of movies.
Yeah,
I have.
I've seen Horrible Bosses twice.
Wow. And I saw Captain America this seen Horrible Bosses twice. Wow.
And I saw Captain America this week.
How was it?
Captain America...
Kick-ass?
...was excellent.
Was it now?
Yes.
It looks cool.
You're going to see that twice?
I will see that twice, and I'll buy it.
Yeah, it was excellent.
You'll buy it?
Is that on as fast a schedule as Horrible Bosses?
How much time went by between the two Horrible Bosses?
Like six days.
So you're going to be ready for Captain America again?
I could have seen Captain America right after it ended.
I could have seen it again.
You just went to see.
Same with Horrible Bosses?
Could you have watched it right away?
No.
I need a little, because it's comedy.
I guess I need a little.
But I want to see the action sequences immediately again.
Wow.
Yeah.
So that's good. But you didn't go just because you loved it so much. Your nephew wanted to see it action sequences immediately again. Wow. Yeah. You,
but you didn't go just cause you loved it so much.
You were your,
your nephew wanted to see it and you had,
he hadn't horrible.
Yeah.
I saw horrible bosses with my wife.
No,
I saw horrible bosses with my wife,
my,
my older nephew,
not the one that's in the room right now. He wanted to see it.
And I said,
I'll see that again.
Yeah.
I liked it a lot.
I laughed.
Yeah.
That didn't catch my mom's eye.
If she just said she wanted to see that,
I would have,
I would have been, how did your mom like bridesmaids by the way? Yeah. Did she like, she had to have loved it. Oh yeah. She liked it a lot i laughed yeah that didn't catch my mom's eye if she just said she wanted to see that i would have i would have been how did your mom like bridesmaids by the way yeah
did she like she had to have loved it oh yeah she liked it she you know she it's just racy enough
the girl from mike and molly is great like she's fallen in love with that woman from watching her
favorite sitcoms are mike and molly and big bang theory and uh and um yeah and so she loved her.
And, you know, she said, I tweeted this, but she said, my mom's, basically my mom's review is, those ladies did a good job.
Awesome.
Like, she just, she just liked it.
You know, these women made this movie and it was funny.
Like, and she wasn't like doubled over laughing at the diarrhea scene.
Right.
But she also wasn't disgusted by it. Right. You you know she's just sort of neutral on it she so that was kind of cool
that she was because i was kind of losing it again because i when when maya rudolph is just
has to crouch down in the street like i'm not a fan of those scenes like i it wasn't really doing
it for me throughout you didn't like them all jumping up into the sink and vomiting on each other.
But the street is like undeniable.
It's so funny. It's such a good
capper to it because there's been so much
mayhem that's just like where they're not afraid
to overdo it. And also her
thing, this is happening or whatever she
says is just like fucking so
Would you agree that it was like as tastefully done as
that sort of thing could be? I thought, you know, a diarrhea
scene. Also very relatable.
It's not like in Dumb and Dumber where they eat a million chili peppers first or something.
Right.
You know?
Right.
It's more like anyone could just have a sudden shit attack.
We've all been there.
On the street in a wedding dress.
Preston watched that recently, Dumb and Dumber.
Really?
Yeah, he thinks it's great.
Sure.
He's nine.
Those guys are so dumb. Thatumber. Really? Yeah, he thinks it's great. Sure. He's nine. Those guys are so dumb.
That was his review?
Yeah.
But the greatest movie he's ever,
like, not only the greatest movie he's ever seen,
but the greatest thing that's ever happened in his life,
he says, is that Transformers 3D.
Oh, boy.
He needs to see some more movies.
Yeah.
But I want to say I saw that.
It's good that there's somebody that can enjoy it.
Enjoy it.
It was probably the best one of the three.
Have you seen any of the Transformers?
But it's robots.
Yeah, I did see Transformers 3.
It's more than meets the eye.
But this kid also likes watching, you know,
cement trucks and stuff like that, right?
Yeah, that's true.
I'm just saying Transformers is so elemental
in terms of, like, what a boy would like, for sure.
Oh, yeah, yeah, it hits the spot.
And then the boys that are a little older,
you throw in, like, a sexy girl to just, you. And then the boys that are a little older, you throw in
a sexy girl to just
sort of keep them
from losing all
interest.
Exactly.
That white jacket
that she had on did
not get dirty at all
through that whole
building's crumbling.
Did you see
Transformers?
I did not.
I thought you
loved movies.
Oh yeah, did you
see, it wasn't in
3D, but the last
movie I saw was
Tabloid.
Did you see that at the Earl Morris documentary? Oh no, I haven't you see, it wasn't in 3D, but the last movie I saw was Tabloid. Did you see that, the Earl Morris documentary?
Oh, no, I haven't seen that.
Awesome!
That wasn't in 3D?
Believe it or not.
But it's still, you know, you would think of it.
You had to seek out a theater that was 2D, right?
Wow, it was tough.
Yeah, but that's what, like, you don't need to rush out for that.
It's probably even out of theaters already.
But, yeah, definitely put that on your queue.
Because, yeah, it's one of those where you just think i don't know where he finds these stories but it's just
like you know you know twists and turns and uh it was like a famous case it was like a famous
tabloid case in the 70s but i'd i'd forgot about it but uh and then crazy stuff starts happening
with dogs i'm gonna check that out i could say i liked it like documentaries are awesome
but i never feel the need to go to a theater to see them right right right it's just like
right you don't need to see it it has to see them. Right, right, right. It's just like, I'll watch that at home.
It has the same impact on the small screen.
But it is fun.
That's the only thing about South by Southwest
is I'll see a documentary with a packed house.
Yeah, that is cool.
When there's a particularly funny or touching moment,
you could feel a whole big audience reaction to it.
But yeah, those are...
In your town, like here,
I'd go to Sunset Five to see one of those sort of things
and i'd sit would sit there with like seven or eight other people scattered around the theater
like we're gonna jerk off and go home oh yeah like i saw man on wire in the theater which was
awesome it's a great movie he's crazy but it's not you don't need to see that in the theater
really did you see grizzly man on wire because Because that were like, what are the odds that he would be on a wire?
He's halfway across between two buildings.
What is happening?
I think I stole that from somebody did a contest.
I'm pretty sure I stole that.
Oh, they combined.
Where it was like, I do this game sometimes.
We ran out of time to play it today, but I have this game called Build a Title where
you blend titles together like that, like grizzly man on a wire and um and they did a thing on crack.com did a contest where they
like make posters for them where they had people make posters for those kinds of movies and some
of them were pretty funny it's awesome and man on wire was used for one of them but i don't remember
if it was grizzly man on wire or not there's not going to be apologies if i'm ripping somebody off
man on wire there's not going to be a sequel. Apologies if I'm ripping somebody off. Man on Wire,
there's not going to be a sequel to that, right?
No.
They're not.
I don't think that's possible.
Too soon.
It's too soon.
Speaking of documentaries,
any rockumentaries that you enjoy?
Oh, yeah.
What's your favorite rockumentary?
The last one.
Go around the table.
All right.
Oh, that's right.
Whoever wants to go first.
You guys start. I have to think for a second. I have five that's all right. Whoever wants to go first. You guys start.
I have to think for a second.
I have five that I like equally.
I like the Who the Kids Are All Right.
Are you reading this off a piece of paper?
Yeah.
You came with a list of your favorite documentaries?
I thought maybe best documentaries might be something that we talk about.
We thought we'd get into it.
You set them up so nicely.
This is a setup.
No, I like the Who the Kids Are All Right.
I wish you'd done that 20 minutes ago.
Yeah, we've got to get to the game, guys.
We were talking about movies and rock and roll.
Metallica, Some Kind of Monster is great.
I don't even like Metallica, and I went to the theater and saw that and was totally enthralled.
Running Down a Dream, the Peter Bogdanovich documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
A little long.
A little long, that one.
See, to me, it's four hours, and I could watch two more hours of it.
Okay.
Well, you must just not.
I love Tom Petty,
but I find a lot of his music,
especially, is it like later stuff?
Well, no, it's everything.
It's everything.
And they had footage.
A lot of his stuff makes me sleepy.
Tom would tell us.
It's so beautiful to listen to,
and it lulls me to sleep.
He doesn't really rock anymore.
Travon Wilbury,
that music's so great
to go to sleep to.
Because it rocks,
but very, very softly.
We're talking about film.
But it's also not
like pussy yacht rock
kind of stuff.
Yeah, we're talking about films
and Tom Petty is
a magnetic figure
to be sure.
Okay, I'm crossing that line.
He's a big screen legend.
Wow, he just bowed down.
Back and forth,
the new Foo Fighters documentary
that's out.
It's good?
It's fantastic, yeah. it goes right from when he when
Kurt Cobain dies the whole way up to the brand new album
and it's really cool
and the worst rock documentary for me
is that Anvil
rock documentary
I saw the ads for that on VH1 for like
two and a half years running and just never
went to see it because I was like, that doesn't...
I don't know if I need real life Spinal Tap.
I don't know. I like fake Spinal Tap.
I like Spinal Tap.
First of all, they suck.
They absolutely suck.
And their songs aren't funny like the ones in Spinal Tap.
No, and then you watch the movie and you think
by the end of the movie you're going to go, wow, those guys are good.
And at the end you go, no, they suck.
That's why he drives a delivery truck
and this guy is a mechanic
or whatever they were
you know what's neat though
by some happenstance
Anvil was on Tonight Show
when Kiss was on Letterman
that should never happen
and so you could like
flip back and forth
and it was like
and you could see like
and I think Anvil
like won that night
like I love Kiss
but I think
but Anvil was like
you know this was like
this was like the biggest
day of their life
and Kiss was just like you know ka-chunk morning day morning paul just phoning it in I love kids. I can't believe that. But Anvil was like, this was like the biggest day of their life
and kids were just like,
you know,
ka-chunk.
Oh, I see what you mean.
Morning day, morning problem.
Phoning it in.
Yeah, just phoning it in.
But Anvil was really trying to sell
that enthusiasm.
Yeah, you can't fake that phone.
It's engaging.
Yeah, but man,
I'm with you on kids are all right.
That is the best.
That's terrific.
I'm so,
I watched that twice in a row
when I was 12.
I just sat there
and I could not believe it.
I was glad that there was that lesbian movie, because I was thinking, like, it would drive some traffic to the other kids.
It's so good.
But mine was, everyone should watch that.
Dig, you watch that with the dig standing Warhols.
Oh, that's so good.
And also, We Jam O'Connell with the Minutemen.
Have you seen that?
No.
Oh, that one's a great one.
I wish it was more like the Foo Fighters
where it kind of ended on an uptick
because, you know, it ends with the guy dying.
Spoiler alert, but, you know, Mike Wadwin.
Yeah, but you never see the tightrope or the bear coming.
Never.
The whole time.
The whole time.
But anyway, any Rocky Manories you enjoy?
I didn't prepare like you guys did.
The Ramones End of the Century is also good.
Ramones End of the Century is good. Oh, Filthy Looker. Did you see that? The sex pistol? I didn't prepare like you guys did the ramones end of the century is also ramones end of the century did you see that the sex business i didn't see that i think one of the take it to
your own podcast i think one of the um one of the cable stations was playing woodstock uh quite a
bit like it might have been stars or so somebody got a hold of woodstock and that's that's a
fascinating by the time i turned that on it was didn't a young
didn't a young
Scorsese like edit
that or he was a
camera guy
yeah
so that's a good one
did you say last
waltz on your list
oh that's that's
that's more of a
concert film for me
than than a documentary
though okay
that counts
yeah yeah yeah
I guess it does
right films
but that is that
does have its own
name concert film
like you don't I guess you don't call a concert film a rockumentary right true vice versa
i liked uh truth or dare madonna anyone that is a good movie and also too often imitated now like
too much too many rock docs are like let's follow them around with a camera and shoot it in black
and white yeah it was it was entertaining for something that was very like fly on the wall it
was it actually held your attention, which is cool.
It really had kind of a more of a, even though it was just kind of a mundane tour,
they found all the most interesting, and probably sort of created some interesting.
Madonna was definitely acting up for the camera.
She's certainly better playing herself than anything else.
But that was her peak.
To me, that was her creative peak.
At her most Madonna-ish.
Yes.
She makes Kevin Costner
look stupid.
It does seem like
the concerts that they're showing,
whenever they go
to the concert footage,
it's a pretty entertaining concert.
It is.
There's a lot of bells and whistles.
If you watch,
there's a DVD
of just that show,
that Blonde Ambition tour,
and it's great.
You can see the whole thing
start to finish
and it's fun to watch.
I get into her groove.
Sure. You got to move. Okay. We're running out it's fun to watch. I get into her groove. Sure.
You got to move.
Okay.
We're running out of time, right?
Okay, let's do it.
I was trying to think of a – I guess Woodstock's a rockumentary, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, that is.
And I quickly – you brought up Footloose.
It wasn't me.
And that's the thing that's crazy about it is that I didn't think that – when I was a youngster and footloose came out i was like
this movie's ridiculous where is there a town where dancing's not allowed now they're remaking
it uh what 30 years later now and uh it's like uh has that become even harder to like is there
really any place where they could just say hey no dancing well there's all that would be the story
maybe i thought didn't they claim it was true like based on some true thing like in missouri i i looked up recently but then um a lot of those
like the proms they have those like no freak dancing maybe it'll be like that right it is
about it is this new one is about more about the specific like you can't you know you can't
you can't that's hilarious dirty dance can't drop it like a top. There's a movie called Dirty Dance. That fucking, Dirty Dancing took place in the,
what, the 50s?
Yeah.
Yeah, so it's so crazy to me
that in the 2000s,
there's,
or what are we calling these?
The 10s?
Do we really call them that?
I guess, yeah.
The teens.
In the 10s,
the 10 teens,
there are,
that there's even that idea.
Like,
especially with those kids
looking the way they do.
Right.
They couldn't be those high school kids
and also then suddenly there's a rule you were never allowed to dance
what's great about the trailers they're not allowed to dance and yet they all dance like
they're professionally trained dancers yeah well because they got the girl from uh uh from dancing
with the stars which would be one of the reasons why i'm suckered into going to that movie because
she's cute and uh oh who's calling frank kelly yeah i can't answer it how do you make it not answer
you just press the volume down just throw it out the window shut up this happened in the future
if you flip the thing in the future yeah but this is my buddy frank calling about uh frank man what's
up he's over at the pod the john lovitz podcast theater so it's just probably calling to say
because he wasn't there that night we did you're doing a show from there we did the tournament of champions part two there and uh
it's i won't say what happened because anybody listening this hasn't heard it yet but you can
get it for two bucks on itunes was lovitz involved in this lovitz was not there but it was a fun
running gag that uh who started that was it uh i think it was jordan brady jordan brady he's up
there give him a hand he just kept trying to imply that Lovitz was hanging out.
And I was like, there's no way he'd just be hanging out and not insist on being on the microphone at some point.
Just to say, hello, everybody.
Or whatever.
Whatever he says.
He would say, yeah, I was there.
I won that show.
I was the critic.
Doug, it's none of my business, but if he found the critic.
You have like no apps.
You have like, you have six. What do you mean no apps? How many apps do you use? It is none of your business. No you found the curtain You have like no apps You have like You have six
What do you mean no apps
How many apps do you have
It is none of your business
No no no
He said abs
You have no abs
You have like a little row
Yeah yeah
I got
But I've got Leonard Maltin
I've got Crank
That's all you need
Those are the only ones I need really
Never mind
I thought you said
I got Flare
Which is a waste of time
It's like a DJ thing
Oh I see
You can make scratchy voices
I just said you had
Three quarters of a screen
And then my friend
I might as well plug this again as long as we're talking apps.
My friend John Schrader
created this app. Oh, the director of Taxi Driver.
Yeah, it's called Shaken Belch.
Oh, okay. You mean the writer? Is that Tall John?
It's Tall John. Ready? Tall John.
Nice.
So if you want that kind of sound to come out
of your phone, go ahead and
get Shaken Belch.
I think it's like $2.
We are living in the future.
That's great.
Well, he thought of it, and he did provide the belching sound.
He's the voice of belching.
And he knows somebody that can make apps.
I love it.
I mean, that's the fun thing about apps and podcasting is anybody can make one.
Yep.
You just, you know.
You guys ready to get malted or what?
Whether or not anybody's going to listen.
Yeah, I just have a brief speech to make. Go ahead. You just, you know, you guys ready to get malted or what? Whether he's going to listen. Yeah.
I just have a brief
speech to make.
Go ahead.
We'll play.
I'm sorry.
We're,
we're getting,
we're running,
we're running long,
but I want to say
thank you to everyone
who did buy and listen
to the tournament
championships part two.
And I also want to say,
Matt,
this is crazy,
but you know,
people qualify by getting
movies and zero names
or negative names.
And like,
I always kind of try to remember to write down names.
But somebody recently wrote to me on Twitter and said that when he was on,
Jeff Garland got Inception and no names.
And, you know, I'm not going to go back and double check.
Take his word for it.
Right, right.
And, you know, to do the tournament the way I like to do it,
I like to have nine players and then narrow it down to three
and then finally one big winner.
And so we have nine names already.
We just finished the last tournament.
And because of some people rolling over because they couldn't make it or something, we have nine names.
So now we'll just be looking for alternates today, gentlemen.
So if you make it in today, you'll just be an alternate.
There's going to be a waiting list for this.
I'm going to wait a few weeks. I don't want to start up again right away. I don't want it to be, you know just be an alternate. There's going to be a waiting list for this. I'm going to wait a few weeks.
I don't want to start up again right away.
It's not Doug Loves Tournaments.
Yet.
It's Doug Hates Sports.
But there's potential scheduling issues, so we do need some alternates.
And a couple of these people were alternates in the last round.
So here are the nine players.
It's also a fantastic lineup.
I'd be proud to have all these
people actually show up and do it.
Andy Wood, Jerry O'Connell,
Jeff Garland, aforementioned,
Simon Pegg, Anthony Jeselnik,
Scott Aukerman,
Paul F. Tompkins, John Hamm,
and Edgar Wright.
Wow, that's great. That's amazing.
I gotta assume a lot of those guys
are not going to make it. Jerry O'Connell's gonna make it down cuz he's got the wife with the twins and she she has a career too
so they could kind of take he's also an attorney in Vegas with Jim Belushi I was
so rude not rude to him but yeah maybe rude I when he was on the show recently
I was like so what's Jim Belushi really like I thought that'd be a funny
question but the audience didn't laugh and and he was like, he's all right.
It was just kind of like I was trying to set up something.
Way to improv, Jerry.
But, you know, I don't blame him.
He's not going to say anything bad about the guy, but he also probably didn't have anything
great to say either.
He could improv good stuff.
No, he did say nice things about him.
He likes him.
He's fine.
He loves a cigar.
And we didn't talk about it.
It's true.
We didn't talk about it off mic, so don't ask me.
Him and the governator loved to smoke those cigars. But anyway, good luck, gentlemen. He loves a cigar. We didn't talk about it off mic, so don't ask me.
Him and the governator loved to smoke those cigars.
Anyway, good luck, gentlemen.
Let's see if you can...
That's what I'm going to have to do
is
someday soon,
maybe we'll start right now, I'll have to implement
we'll have to take it up a notch and only
negative names gets you in. Zero names doesn't
get you in. Oh, that'd be a super championship well we're still gonna have a super
championship oh the winners of the championships yeah yeah once we have it's gonna be mental it's
gonna be matt pronger the winner of this recent one that's gonna go unnamed right now and um the
next one right the next big winner all right it's so exciting all right let's get this party started mid-scheme of trivia uh okay so in honor of rock solid uh i i'm doing uh there are different categories
but everything today is going to be under the heading of rock stars in movies so yeah i'm going
on the record saying i do not approve doug does not like this but i was not for like one category
rock stars in movies.
And we've actually
played that character.
I know,
and I'm going to play it again.
But there are a lot of them.
There are a lot.
There are a lot.
And I think I got,
I think I got some good ones.
But so basically.
I think especially going up
against these guys,
I'm going to be in trouble.
But we'll see what happens.
I don't know.
You'll see.
We'll see.
All right.
But basically,
to break it down
the way the game
is usually broken down
into categories,
we've got 80s,
90s,
and 2000s
so uh those are the categories you get to choose from yeah and then and then you'll get a year um
should we start who gets to pick first uh you know what you're the host why don't we go with
well you know i'll go 2000s okay at least it's more recent 2000s we got 2002 2002 or 2006
that happens to me sometimes too i'm loading them in i don't pay
attention to the fact i'm loading in two from the same year but yeah but that's the other thing is
like just moving forward i i want to play the game where i just go we they pick a category and then i
just go the year is and i just do it you know right people are going to mostly pick okay well
we want to do that i'll just pick but no that's okay i'm just i'm just pointing it out because
we're you know we out because we never talk.
Yeah.
I'll take whatever.
What was the most recent one?
Oh, I'm sorry.
You know what?
There's four.
Oh, okay.
Do you want to go?
What's the most recent one?
2009.
I'll take it.
Okay.
So there's a rock star in this movie.
Yes.
From 2009.
You know, yes.
When I say rock star, I just mean-
Musical personnel.
Yes, exactly. Right, right. That gets- You don't want. You know, when I say rock star, I just mean... Musical personnel. Yes, exactly.
Right, right.
That gets...
That's actually R&B.
VH1 movies that rock drives me nuts.
Most of them don't have rock in them at any point.
Okay.
Now I have to do what Doug always does, which is scan through here for...
Okay.
Len says there's some loopy logic and a mediocre performance from one of the stars here.
Sorry.
Surprisingly mediocre, actually.
There's seven names.
Doug, start the bidding.
In the years 2009?
Yep.
Seven names.
I'll bring it down a little bit.
I'll say six names.
All right.
Gary?
I'll take five.
Getting serious.
I'm with Doug.
I'll take six.
That's not how we go?
No.
Okay, four.
Four names to Doug.
2009.
I have no idea.
You shouldn't say that.
I just want to play.
Are you bluffing?ing like your attitude i'll
go three names oh whoa i actually do know i name that movie i can't do oh boy happens to a person
i'm glad you said that caught up in your enthusiasm no but i like that because actually
somebody because you because we're doing three you're going to get a name that someone that
that we were just talking about moments ago.
Oh, let's hear it.
This might help you because you know this guy.
Okay, here are the three names.
We're talking 2009.
There's a musician, musical person in this movie.
It's got some loopy logic and surprisingly mediocre performance.
Here are the names.
Okay.
Matthew Humphreys.
Christine Lottie
we weren't talking about her
and
your friend
Jerry O'Connell
Jerry O'Connell
and Christine Lottie
were in this movie
oh
I know this movie
that should totally
give it away
the Jerry O'Connell thing
but
do you really know it
but I can't pull the title
music
2009 thing but do you really know i think but i can't pull the title music 2009
oh i can't even picture him in a music movie oh wait wait that seems like it was more recent than
that well the movie itself isn't necessarily musical there's just no no no i know that i'm
just trying to think i'm just trying to think of that goddamn movie that stars a Beyonce was in it.
I will not react to that.
I think that's what it is, though, but I just can't think of it because it was just something
like, you know, about being mistreated or cheated on or...
I can't think of the name of it, but that's what I think it is.
Yes.
So I give up.
I'll give you the rest of the names.
See if any of you guys can...
Bruce McGill,
Ali Larder,
Beyonce Knowles,
and The Wire's Idris Elba.
Also from The Office.
Also from The Office.
What's it called?
The movie is called Obsessed.
Obsessed.
I didn't know it.
I knew exactly what movie it was, but I never saw thatessed. Obsessed. I know. Yeah. I didn't know it. All right.
So...
I knew exactly what movie it was, but I never saw that movie.
Me neither, actually.
And I just...
That's such a...
That title.
Yeah.
That's just a zero.
But the Jerry O'Connell thing did give it away for me.
Because I remember...
I just...
It just struck me that he had a small part in that.
And that was also part of why I kind of wanted to see it.
And then...
But then ultimately...
I remember at the time there was some buzz about it.
It was a good, bad movie.
It got some okay reviews.
It came in second or something in the box office chart.
If you like a dumb thriller,
you know exactly what's going to happen,
but it's still fun to see it.
Yeah, yeah.
But that was an immediate example
of someone who would never be called a rock star,
but she is sort of a rock star.
So that's where we're going, guys.
Now you know what's up with this game.
And that the movie itself isn't necessarily a movie about rock or music,
but it could be because rock stars do cameos in movies about rock.
That's right.
So it could be rockers turned actors.
It could be just someone playing themselves even.
I don't know.
I can't remember what I picked even.
So Pat was not involved in that.
No, Gary got the point.
Oh, yeah, because he challenged you.
He told me to name it?
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, okay.
So we start with Pat.
Someone's keeping score.
Casey, you want to keep score?
Who's keeping score?
I don't have a piece of paper.
He's asleep.
I think it's 0-1-0.
Just remember that you have a point, Gary.
I have a point too.
All right.
Okay.
So do I get to pick the year next?
You do want 2000s, 90s, or 80s?
I'll go with the 80s. 80s. Good call. 84. Okay. So do I get to pick the year next? Do you want 2000s, 90s, or 80s? I'll go with the 80s.
80s.
Good call.
84, 87, or also 87.
Again, I do.
I'm going to go with also 87.
Oh, you're going for the second 87?
Yeah.
Okay, great.
I love it.
There's not really a lot to pull from the review other than...
That's what happens to me sometimes.
It would be a stinker anytime.
I don't know.
The first part of the sentence gives away that this takes place in the 80s,
but it would be a stinker anytime.
And it's got eight names.
What year is it?
87.
I'll give you another.
Okay.
No, that's going to give too much away.
Just stick with the, it's a stinker in any time.
1987, stinker any time, four names.
Whoa.
And now we're going to go this way, right?
Am I playing it right?
Oh, wait, wait.
Because we were coming that way when he made me guess it.
Right, right.
So you're going to go this way.
That's the tricky part.
It's really hard.
The same thing can't happen again.
So I will say...
What did you start out at?
You said four.
This movie stinks.
I probably own it.
I want to get on the board.
I'm going to say name it.
Because I think it might be hard.
It's just stinky in a year. It doesn't narrow it down that much stinky movie from 87 and here are
your four names all right you're gonna recognize two of them minimum okay starting with meshach
taylor we remember him well oh i do from designing women yes and uh mannequin uh pam greer sure we all loved her and
coffee and all those movies uh anthony uh james anthony shanta yeah yeah and and here's the big
here's the giveaway john terleski no gives itki? No. I don't know who that is.
Okay, so Meshack and Pam, that's why you were laying on thick with those two.
Yeah, these other ones are useless. I catch myself doing that sometimes, giving those extra clues.
Like, when do you think you give those?
When you think the person needs help knowing who those people are?
Oh, well, what did I do?
You kind of describe people as you name them, which I do sometimes, too.
But it's hard to know when to do it and when not to do it, because when are you going to help them get
it by pointing out who somebody is?
Well, you know who Meshack Taylor and Pam Greer are, right?
Yeah, how could you not?
Jackie Brown.
That's right.
That's not the answer.
We all remember Meshack Taylor.
She had much better billing in that.
That's true.
Okay, so those are your four names, and it's a stinker, and there's some rock stars in
it somewhere.
Wow.
Is Meshack Taylor considered a rock star?
I would hope not.
Now, the rock star's in it, but it's not necessarily one of the next three names.
True or false?
Oh, he can't give you that much information.
I don't know what you're talking about.
The rock star could have a smaller part or a bigger part.
No, no, no, no.
No, they're all listed.
In everything I did, they're all listed in the cast.
That's a good general overall thing.
That's a good point though because there
were some I thought he's just fishing for more information yeah yeah no I
wasn't I where's his name on the list I'm not that you'd go like yeah oh yeah
I'm not telling you don't know if it's a girl or a man all right let's do it I'm
just I'm gonna get you sucker nope it's a great guess you guys want the rest of
names okay do you think you know um I have a guess but it's but it's but i'm not very confident in it
well let's hear your guess uh tougher than leather that would that would have been a great one no
okay you know what those first two names now that i you've said that it makes me realize how
misleading those two names are here are the rest of the disorderlies michael ontkean sure joan cusack okay dd pfeiffer and
the star of the film in her film debut suzanna hoff the all-nighter i was gonna say the all-nighter
that was the worst movie the all-nighter that's another one i might not have been able to pull
the name out but i do remember she starred in a movie. Wow. Yeah. It was the worst movie. Who directed that? Directed by your mother.
Yeah.
Her mother directed it.
Yeah.
And she's kind of like, that's pretty sexy in it too.
That's kind of sexy.
She's always sexy though, right?
Tamar Simon-Hoff.
She is my favorite.
Well, you know what?
They do say there's assorted sexual hijinks and it was grotesque in the AIDS era, though
it would be a stinker anytime.
That's what Leonard Vaughn said.
That's why you had to say it's a stinker anytime.
Yeah.
Because you couldn't really mention about grotesque in the
AIDS era. Although that would be a good clue. I guess I could have
said that. You could have said that. I lost focus
for a second. Matt, is it the all-nighter?
That would have made it
even harder to guess.
Because I would never think of the Susanna Hoffs
movies as being grotesque.
Considering
AIDS happened. What does that
have to do with anything? I guess she has sex with several different people.
I think there's just a lot of casual sex.
So it's 1-1-0.
Yeah.
Gary was not involved, so he will pick the decade and the year.
I'll go 90s.
That's exciting.
90s.
All right.
Would you like...
And then it's coming back my way.
Yeah.
Would you like 1990, which I would like to point out is technically the 80s but
most people consider that the 90s um if you look at you got a touch of the sam
yeah i think i was trying to hold up my maybe perfectly clear
in the 80s it was a turbulent year of the 80s 1990 technically every decade starts with a one, not a zero. So that would be, but anyway, 90, 95, or 99.
Well, I'm not touching that 95 hornet's nest.
I mean that 90 hornet's nest.
So I'm going to go, see, 99 is a big year for me.
That was the first year I met Doug.
I wonder if it's.
Well, let's honor that.
Okay, yeah, let's go 99.
99.
Let's totally honor it. Oh, man, this is a tough one honor it own it win it okay um all nighter was an easy one though
these are all i guess they're all kind of tough but i think you all know these movies once i say
them right i mean yeah yeah yeah i didn't i haven't i knew it before you said obsessed
this one this one i'm probably the only person in the room who saw this, so I apologize in advance.
Interesting subject matter, overlong and sometimes unfocused treatment, says Len.
There are nine names in this 99 movie.
I'll start with seven.
I'm going to jump to five.
Okay.
Patrick? What do I got to lose? I'll to five. Okay.
Patrick?
What do I got to lose?
I'll go four.
Okay.
I don't think you can do it.
There's a lot at stake here.
You got a lot to lose.
So you're saying name that movie?
Yeah, name that movie.
Oh, man. This is exciting.
If you fail, Gary gets to win.
I know.
This is exciting for one reason for me,
is that the name The Rockstar is in the bottom four.
Oh, damn.
Oh.
Here we go. Jonathan Brandes. Wait a minute. Jonathan Brandes. Oh, I rock star, is in the bottom four. Oh, damn. Here we go.
Jonathan Brandis.
Wait a minute.
Jonathan Brandis.
Oh, I know who it is.
I don't know who that is, but I know this next guy.
Tom Wilkinson.
I think it's a kid actor.
Tom Wilkinson.
Jonathan Brandis, I think, is dead.
He was in Ladybugs with Rodney Danger.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Wow, that's creepy.
That's a creepy piece of information.
The next name, soak it in.
Jewel.
Oh. And the final name, soak it in, Jewel. Oh.
And the final name,
Jeffrey Wright.
I know who Jeffrey Wright is, too.
He's in the New James Bond movies.
He plays Felix Leiter.
Jeffrey Wright does.
But, man.
Jewel.
I would like to think
she plays a stripper.
And you probably would have seen it if that were the case.
1999.
Wilkinson.
Can I tell you something about Jewel's performance in that movie?
If you want to see just one of them, that's the movie for you.
She takes a boob out at one point.
I forgot about that.
Yeah.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah.
Is Window in the title? No're talking about what kind of weird what are you trying to pull out of me i don't know
i don't know just throw out a bunch of random words i'm gonna know it when you when you say
i'm gonna know it but i don't know it it was just chair in it let's read the rest of the name see
if either of them know the name of it i know the name of it i mean i feel like if you knew the movie you would know it from jewel but the next two names simon baker jonathan rice myers
jim caviezel toby mcguire and skeet ulrich got the top bill jeffrey wright was really that was
a movie where i really started recognizing him as being a really good character actor like
and i've seen him in a few it was directed by Ang Lee yeah I wouldn't have
got that yeah it's got it's it's it I'm so happy I remember the title there's no
reason for me remember it ride with the devil yeah but it's a good movie it's
really violent and it is pretty good it says like weird that Ang Lee made a
movie that totally got ignored and it's actually pretty good movie. It's really violent. It is pretty good. It's weird that Ang Lee made a movie that totally got ignored, and it's actually pretty good.
Yeah, but it's also just a lot of, when they get shot, there's lots of little balls and stuff.
And Jewel, she's a nurse, isn't she?
They have to cauterize wounds out in the field and stuff at one point.
Right, right, right.
It's gnarly.
Is she a nurse in it?
I don't remember.
I don't think so.
She just ends up being married to a guy.
She has a kid, so there's a breastfeeding scene.
I think that's the game, right?
That's why I went Mr. Skin on you guys.
Did Doug win that one?
Wait, I said name it and you didn't?
So I win? I think so.
Is this the first time I've ever won?
I think you won one other studio.
I think I challenged Pat, but I think he pulled up Nate.
He challenged me. Oh, yeah, yeah. So Gary
won. I'm sorry. Sorry.
This shit ain't over!
This shit ain't over! No, I knew it was too good to be true.
No, he won. He got two points.
The shit is over! The shit is over!
That's right. These were hard. Even
somebody that's not drug addled like me
has a hard time running this game. It's complicated.
You have to write things down, and I was not writing it down.
I should have been following more closely.
These were hard ones.
Those were toughies but I like
playing with the toughies because
it's fun when you can pull one out.
I like to pull out a toughie
every once in a while.
If I had a remembered obsession I would have had a pretty impressive day
today. Obsessed.
You still can't get it.
I'll never get it right.
I should see it, though.
Jerry is my friend.
Hey, I'm going to be in Boston, Massachusetts at the Wilbur Theater on August 5th,
and we're doing a Benson Interruption taping that will be released later for $2.
But you can come to the taping at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California
on August 21st.
Can you guys write down, each of you,
on one of these blank spots
who you would like me to call a shithead?
Oh, I get to do one, actually.
You won. Gary won.
So Pat gets to do one, and then I'll do one.
And then you just call this person a shithead?
Yeah, just whoever you want.
Some people use it for evil.
You've been on this show before.
I know, but I forget about the shithead. I'm going to be at the Sherman Oaks Arclight Just whoever you want. Some people use it for evil. You've been on this show before.
I know, but I forget about this shit.
I'm going to be at the Sherman Oaks Arclight on Thursday seeing Captain America.
I have a superhero movie going club.
Some comedians are going to be there.
We watch him.
You're going to go see Captain America?
Yeah.
You dress up?
Yeah.
I remember one time a bunch of us comics went to see Con Air together
and several of them showed up in prison jumpsuits, including, Iul f tompkins that sounds like a scott ackerman joint
yeah yeah yeah i don't know if he was if he wore one or not but i remember he went to twilight and
wore a cape and fangs oh yeah and said fangs for coming that's right at the end of the movie he
stood up and said you don't get one i could say yours if you want, I guess. No, go ahead and say his.
Because I agree with the setting.
You're trying to get the win and the shithead?
Come on, man.
I'm sorry I didn't.
It's weird, though, in this setting.
Because there's no actual prize for winning,
so the consolation prize doesn't really make sense.
But it's how I close out the show.
I say, so-and-so's a shithead, so-and-so's a shithead,
and then the music comes in.
Do you guys have anything to plug?
Yeah, I'm going to be
in San Francisco on

Yes, we have.
No, I only knew quartz and feldspar because of Ryan O'Neill's character in What's Up, Doc?
He's a rock.
Oh, that's him?
That's him on a comedy team?
A rock doctor.
Quartz and feldspar.
Oh, man.
I know.
That would be a great comedy team.
