Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop or kernels in his teeth. They're still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies. Hey, hey, hey everybody. My name is Doug. I love movies. This is Doug Loves Movies. We are recording on Sunday afternoon, September 15th.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Congratulations to everybody who survived another Friday the 13th, you know, the way they talk about him. You think we'd all just everybody would be dead. Did I say 2024 just two days away from our 18th anniversary? My guests today are Patrick Kottner, Chris grace and Isaac Hirsch. Hello gentlemen Hi, everyone Let's meet them individually and alphabetically by first name Joining us for the first time it's actor and comedian Chris grace. Hello, Chris Hey, Doug. Thanks for having me. I'm very excited to lose to these two guys
Starting point is 00:01:09 Okay, well, you know, that's a real it's a real negative attitude you have there That's what I'm famous for just being negative That's your your stick is just go up and say I can't believe this microphone is working I did a set last night where at the beginning I said I'm gonna do a joke and it's not gonna work and I was right Right, but sometimes that's a great setup, you know I've even seen some hackier comics like insists something's not gonna work and they already know it's gonna kill and That would have been a better approach But you never know I mean I do think it's
Starting point is 00:01:50 Sometimes warning them does help your case a little bit, you know That's why I always say it's my first time doing comedy every time I do stand up. That's a that's a genius move Isaac I'll get to you in a second. He's the host of the Chris grace show podcast How did you come up with that name? Um, I tried to do Doug loves Chris grace and that was taken on that's been trademarked already by by Whoever Matt Belknap or miss it toys or whoever. I don't know what's going on Yeah, you know Doug can't love anything but movies. Unfortunately Yeah, you know Doug can't love anything but movies unfortunately
Starting point is 00:02:29 Doug is contractually locked into just loving movies and I'll tell you these days I've said this before on the show and some people think it's blasphemy, but a lot of TV is better than movies these days. Okay Thank you for being here Chris. Thanks Doug. Good luck I hope you're I hope you start to feel better about yourself as we as we go along All right. I hope that's what we achieve in this podcast. It's really more of a therapy session than a trivia trivia game We've got another first timer that I have to talk off the ledge as well. Probably This guy is very humble dude despite being a recent Jeopardy champion. It is Isaac Hirsch. Hello, Isaac.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Hello. Yeah, I'm actually not very good at movie trivia. So I don't want expectations to be set too high by hearing Jeopardy champion. It was not movie questions that got me there. I'm thinking based on how all my guests come into this these days, I think I'm gonna change the title to
Starting point is 00:03:28 excuses colon the podcast. I'm full of them. Everybody's got excuses and even a Jeopardy champ. So did you just avoid, do you avoid the movie and pop culture or is it just movies or all pop culture that you're weak on? No, I mean, I'm not like, it's not my weakest. It's not geography.
Starting point is 00:03:51 If this was a Doug loves geography, I probably would have turned down the invitation altogether. But I mean, I'm okay. It sounds so fun. It's yeah. I just, I'm okay at pop culture. It's just not my strongest suit and I just haven't seen as many movies
Starting point is 00:04:08 as everyone else here probably, I would guess. So, you know, I'm hoping to still do well with like kind of knowing about things, which is how Jeopardy works is you kind of know about everything and that's generally good enough and we'll see if that pays off. Yeah, notice that, you know, that Ken Jennings who actually knows a lot about everything,
Starting point is 00:04:32 like he's not, you know, guessing a lot of the time. No, yeah, he could sniff me out as a fraud as soon as I stepped on stage. He's like, this guy doesn't actually know anything. He just has heard of a lot of stuff. But I thought you were a great contestant and I wanted to know, what would the category name be that if that happened to come up on one of your games, you would be so psyched
Starting point is 00:04:57 because you know you could just run that category? Oh man, Washington Wizards, because everybody else does bad at sports on Jeopardy generally and then you ask about a team no one cares about like the Washington Wizards which I care very deeply about that's my category that's that's gonna be a run for sure. That is wild when like all these really smart people they'll be like a category about baseball and they'll just get with they won't get any of it. Yeah it's always just like,
Starting point is 00:05:25 what guy in football throws the ball and it just goes dead? Nobody knows anything about sports on Jeopardy, it's crazy. Well, thank you for being with us today and also joining us. It's stiff competition all around today. So Chris, maybe you were right because also joining us is a current ongoing Douglas movies champion. And he goes by the name of Patrick Cotton.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Or hey, Patrick. I was very nervous. I didn't want to be a one time winner, you know. And now you guys have talked yourself down so much that I'm feeling a little better about myself. Well, that reminds me, I forgot to ask Isaac, what was the official number of wins for you? Nine nine one Wow That's pretty that's like up there in the top 20 percentile of all time on that show, right?
Starting point is 00:06:14 Yeah, only only 22 people have done that so Yeah, very good. Very good. So I come back next week, maybe good. So next week, maybe. You know, he just said that he's, you know, that, you know, movies isn't really his main thing, but also Patrick, you know, when you won, did you feel like you may have guessed once or twice to that victory? Yeah. Yeah. I think I was guessing and I was going up against Griffin Newman, which I was genuinely very scared about. And I truly think it was luck that made was going up against Griffin Newman, which I was genuinely very scared about. Uh,
Starting point is 00:06:48 and I truly think it was luck that, uh, made me come out on top. So, yeah, I don't know. Yeah. Anybody's game is what I'm trying to say. Exactly. I don't know Isaac, but I know Chris and I feel like, uh, I'm, I'm confident I can take Chris. Right, Chris? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Also, I don't think I could have beaten Griffin. No, it's scary. Griffin have like a movie podcast. Yes, he does. I don't know how it happened. I don't know why I'm here.
Starting point is 00:07:11 I mean, I would know a lot of the answers on my show, but fortunately, I'm the one asking the question. That's true. You know, I do the research. You're the real ongoing winner. Yeah, I really I've I've my my winning winning streak is over 2,000 now there's over 2,000 episodes and I've come back every time except for one time there was a guest host because I I was in the hospital with a what do you call those things? Stroke? What do you call those things stroke strokes
Starting point is 00:07:50 Not a gallstone but a kidney stone Yeah, I'm sorry. Sorry. What is a kidney stone? Thousand episode winning streak that's a that's almost like a North Korean type streak you have going there. Yeah. And I actually do, you know, in the live shows with the audience, so a lot of times the end game that I was, I had been playing for a while now. I just play also and, you know, and I, I win that a lot too. So anyway, You know and I win that a lot too. So Anyway My point is if anybody's listening I don't get to be on enough shows where I'm a contestant and when I am I'm I feel like I'm fairly formidable. So
Starting point is 00:08:38 anybody out there has a Game show Asked to be on more podcasts I want the camera to pull back and me Isaac and Patrick are just stuffed animals that he's talking to. He's like, I've won 2000 times. I arranged them in my room and yes, they're not as good as I am. The game is not as good as I am. I'm not as good as I am.
Starting point is 00:09:00 I'm not as good as I am. I'm not as good as I am at the games that I create. Before we play the games today though, I would like to talk movies for a moment with the three of you. Patrick knows what the question is, it's coming I think. And so he might've had time to mentally prepare. I don't want to surprise anybody. So Chris and Isaac, you'll both go after Patrick,
Starting point is 00:09:31 but I'd like each one of you to recommend a movie. Yeah. The more annoying question. People ask me all the time, Doug, recommend a movie. And I'm like, I can't pick one movie that this one person who just asked me is definitely gonna like So it's a it's a tough question. But What do you got for us this time Patrick? What'd you recommend last time last time? I recommended the 1976 King Kong
Starting point is 00:09:57 The Jeff Bridges just a lang King Kong. Yeah, we had a nice chat about that led to a nice chat about yeah That movie and then I saw nice chat about that movie. And then I saw a clip from that movie almost immediately after we talked about it, the scene where the monkey's holding Jessica Lange under the waterfall. Oh, yes, yes, yes. It's great. It's great. I had Scream Factory, the Blu-ray company that made the Blu Ray for that movie,
Starting point is 00:10:25 reach out and say thank you for saying our Blu Ray was good. Isn't that wild? I felt really, yeah, I felt really good about it. This weekend, I rewatched Prey, the Predator movie, which rips and came out during COVID, I want to say, or it was like 2022 or something like that. And they put it direct to Hulu. And I think it was such a mistake because I think it would have done so well in theaters. It's great. It's so good. For those of you who haven't seen it, it takes place on like a Comanche reservation in the 1700s. And it's the first time that the predator has come to earth. And it doesn't really feel like a predator movie. It feels like a regular movie about, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:10 Comanche Native Americans. And then all of a sudden there happens to be a predator in there. And you can watch it in English or they also dubbed it in the Comanche language. And that was the way I watched it this time. And it's so great. It's beautiful. It feels like a great movie. or they also dubbed it in the Comanche language. And that was the way I watched it this time. And it's so great. It's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:11:29 It feels like real. It does not feel like they shot it on a stage because they didn't. It's all outside in Canada. And it's really like, it rules. It rules. And I feel like not a lot of people talk about it. I've seen it a few times. It's how a ton of dialogue either though, right? No, no, there's not.
Starting point is 00:11:45 For a normal movie, there is not a lot of dialogue now. But it's great. The lead is an actress? Yes. Yes. She was in, oh my gosh, what was the, what was the movie called? The movie was called The Capsule. The Capsule.
Starting point is 00:12:01 The Capsule. The Capsule. The Capsule. The Capsule. The Capsule. The Capsule. The Capsule. I'm not a fan of the Yeah. Yeah. She's great. But she's really great at it. It's almost a one-hander. She's the main thrust of that movie for so much of it. It's just a girl and her dog taking on a predator without the use of technology. So I really recommend people watch. That's why it's called. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Prey is short for predator. I think it's great. But I also it's so weird to me that there's like I think there's like four movies called Prey. Oh sure. Yeah. If not more. And it just seems like why you know I mean it just you know there must be something they could have called it. Well it also feels like there should be a certain amount of time before you can name a movie, something else. Like we were on Amazon last night and there was a movie called Abigail. And I was like, oh, I saw that. And then I looked at it and I was like, that is not the vampire ballerina movie.
Starting point is 00:13:16 It's something completely different. And it came out like two years ago. And I was like, there should be some rule that you need to wait 10 years or something in between movies or just some self-respect. Like, why would you buy a fan of the Great recommendation Patrick. What did you got for me Chris? So I am a person that I think if I was smart I'd be like hey I'm not buying DVDs and blu-rays anymore, but what happens is like twice a year There's this like Barnes and Noble sale on criterion Stuff that comes around and it's like if you buy 10 you're gonna get 40% off or something like that So actually I just went to Edinburgh Fringe
Starting point is 00:14:07 and right before I left, I bought, I didn't even know what I bought. Like I came home and I just found all these discs. I was like in some Hayes, I just purchased a bunch of criteria and stuff. But I did get a 4K, I guess, UHD version of the Chinese film Farewell My Concubine. That's what I'm going to recommend.
Starting point is 00:14:28 All right. I believe one The Palm Door at one point. But it is such a good movie and now I have this very beautiful rendition of it. I watched about half of it this week. It was like I got the DVD and I hadn't seen it in about 10 years. And like the first half of it, like so much of it is burned into my brain that I was like, oh, I remember so much of this film.
Starting point is 00:14:52 Anyway, it's a beautiful film about these two peaking opera performers in China. And like it's basically like their whole life story and all the stuff they go through. I see. But that I when I first saw that movie that's where I learned what the word concubine meant before watching it I thought it was like an auto part and you know I thought it was about a race car driver and that's why it's called farewell my concubine.
Starting point is 00:15:22 He let it get he that is what it's about he gets in a wreck and the concubine from the engine flies away and he says that right when the credits roll. All right. That's a very, did you, when you purchased the criterion though, cause there was a deal you could not pass up in a movie that you adore. Uh, did you watch it right away or are you just telling us you're just reminded of the fact that it's great because you just purchased it? No, I got it like I got the 4k like Monday and I watched the first half of the film. It's a long film. I think it's like three, but no, I did watch it. And you know what? Like I'm committed to if I buy DVDs, I want to watch them because I have a big library of DVDs
Starting point is 00:16:07 that I haven't watched. So everything I'm getting new now, I really try to make myself watch it almost immediately. Well, good for you because that's the trouble with, you know, that kind of media, the physical media is like, collecting is cool and all, but like I've got way more stuff than I could ever watch and so much of it is available in you know, collecting is cool and all, but like, I've got way more stuff than I could ever watch and so much of it is available in a better for, you know, a better version
Starting point is 00:16:31 of it's available, you know, either through like a criterion or, you know, or even, you know, I love this trend of, you know, everything that's everything that was good in the last 20-30 years seems to be getting a restoration like around an anniversary so they can like you know promote it that way the 4k version for the restoration for the 20th anniversary or 10th anniversary. Great recommendation Isaac these are two good ones, very different motion picture experiences, but what can you recommend today? Well it's funny Chris mentioned opera because the movie I was thinking of also very prominently features opera and that's Diva from 1981. It's a French movie by Jean-Jacques Bonnet.
Starting point is 00:17:28 And as I said, I'm not like the biggest movie guy, so I had to like think kind of hard so I wouldn't just be like, Groundhog Day, you guys seen Groundhog Day? It's really good. But Diva is a movie I first watched with my parents and I made my girlfriend watch it when we started dating and it's just maybe one of the most beautifully shot movies I've seen. It just
Starting point is 00:17:48 has so many shots in it where it's just like, wow, that is so cool looking. And the plot is kind of second to just the look of it, where it's just like, again, a very beautiful looking movie. And the plot is, it's, you know, it's a fun thriller. It's not like the most, it's not the deepest plot ever, but the performances are good. There are some fun side characters. And again, I can't stress enough how cool the shots in this movie are. Yeah, it's a very it's. With the pacing of it and the visuals,
Starting point is 00:18:22 I'd say it's like a perfect movie to have on, like in a bar or something on the screens, a nightclub maybe, because you could just look at it and get a lot just from that. But I remember seeing that in theaters, so that really dates me because it's been around for a while. Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's you know, it's not a style over substance movie, but it's definitely like a style is equivalent to substance movie for sure. Really, you could watch it with the sound off and get a lot out of it still. Whenever I see the like
Starting point is 00:18:59 opera singer segment in Fifth Element, I remind me of Diva. Hmm. Yeah, right. opera singer segment in Fifth Element. It reminds me of Diva. Hmm. Yeah. Right. It seems like kind of a take on that or, you know, homage, uh, similar thing going on there. Yeah. And then the movie confused, um, with another eighties movie called Aria. Oh, right. It's like 10 short films by a bunch of directors, but they're all inspired by opera Yeah, some way
Starting point is 00:19:36 Probably not a favorite of mine in my younger days But I would check something like that out now our aria Yeah, I remember like Robert Altman has a segment in it, I think. It's a bunch of famous directors. I'd be interested to see his segment just to see if he can work in his signature, everybody talking over one another. While someone's singing an aria. Yeah. It doesn't seem like a great,
Starting point is 00:20:04 doesn't seem like a good match. But he was a big stoner, I've been told, so God bless him. All right, we're going to take a break after those hot recommendations and we'll cool down a little bit and we'll be right back. Today's episode is brought to you in part by Shopify. What a refreshing break. We did it. We did it in honor of Isaac being here and my, you know, just my love of Jeopardy. When do you go back for the tournament of champions, Isaac?
Starting point is 00:24:44 I wish they would tell me, I don't know yet. I think sometime early next year, but I haven't gotten an official date yet. Oh, I thought, when was the last tournament? I thought it was a fall thing. They're not doing it in fall this year, for sure. They're pushing it back because of the Ryder Strike short in season.
Starting point is 00:25:00 So they want to have more eligible champions before they do Tournament of Champions, which is unfortunate for me I'd like to play as few people as possible, but they're gonna like hold it until early next year at the the earliest Okay. Yeah, that makes sense. They need to rack up enough and a person needs to win five Times to advance or is it four you can probably get in with four But yeah five is like the automatic qualifying threshold, and then four will probably get you in anyway.
Starting point is 00:25:28 All right. That's what I'll go for then is four. For sure. I won't get greedy like you, I'll stick around. Two whole weeks almost. What day of the week was your losing episode? It was a Tuesday that it aired. Losing episode. Um, it was a Tuesday that it aired Okay
Starting point is 00:25:53 There's always stuff about there's always language to you know to the person who you know a champion Like having to wait over the weekend or this new season just started the other day So that person had to wait months Yes, we their win and when they got to come back and then did not win, I don't think. They did not. Yeah. I mean, it's funny because those actually did film back to back. So they probably actually only waited a week or so before the actual season break. They taped a lot of this season 41, the first three weeks I want to say,
Starting point is 00:26:19 like during when they taped season 40. Then there was the big one. Wow. Some insider Japanese knowledge for you there. when they taped season 40 and then there was the Wow Some insider jeopardy knowledge for you there. That's really cool. Don't you sign an NDA or something like you? They're pretty lax about I you know I it's it's funny cuz like I've done millionaire and the chase and other game shows and they were the legal briefing was much more Complicated than it was for Jeopardy. Jeopardy is just like, hey, don't fucking tell people what happened.
Starting point is 00:26:48 And that's pretty much it. If you get kicked out of the Jeopardy tournament of champions because of an appearance on Douglas movies, that is maybe the funniest outcome, though. It would. With distance, I'm sure it'd be hilarious. Yeah, I know I'm not worried about who's going to hear this. Although, yeah, the EP Michael Davies is an old friend of mine, which is so frustrating because I can't even audition to be on Jeopardy because of that.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Also, this whole damn Ken Jennings connection I have now, he's he's been on this show like I don't know Maybe a dozen times Anyway, what am I talking about? Okay, so I'll just go off about jeopardy when given an opportunity But in honor of that the fact that we are talking so much about jeopardy We're gonna play a game that I came up with called Double Trouble. Here's how this game works.
Starting point is 00:27:49 I will say a fact, fun or otherwise, and then you have to tell me if it applies to the motion picture, Double Jeopardy from 1999 or Double Indemnity from 1944 or neither. So Chris, you'll be up first. You'll have three of those things to guess between. And if you get it right, you're on the board. If you get it wrong, Isaac gets to choose
Starting point is 00:28:15 between the two remaining answers. And if he gets it wrong, then Patrick will get a gimme point so anybody can win a gimme point at any point so good luck to all okay Chris the protagonist of this film owns a cat named spooky Is that double jeopardy double indemnity or neither I'm gonna say it's double jeopardy What's who's got like a noise in the background, it's not me it is not I me that's spooky What is it is it something It's weird even here background noise because is like, so cuts it out so well.
Starting point is 00:29:10 But do you think it do you think is over, Patrick? I know I don't think it's me. Oh, Chris, I'm sorry. Is it you? No, it's definitely not me. I heard it in someone else's. Yeah, I swear it's not. There's nothing going on. Yeah, I'm in a room by myself. Doug, maybe it was like a ghost, like there's nothing going on. Yeah, I'm in a room by myself Doug maybe it was like a ghost Like a ghost thing going on
Starting point is 00:29:29 You know, maybe it's the ghost of Barbara Stanwyck Decided check it sounded like somebody like opening closing or a refrigerator or something or I don't know. But anyway, oh I'm recording this from a walk-in cooler. Is that cool? I don't know. But anyway, um, Oh, I'm recording this from a walk-in cooler. Is that cool? At the, at the restaurant that's in the bear. I love, I'd love it if the listeners here, absolutely nothing. And just think I went crazy. Okay. So the protagonist owns a cat named spooky. You said,
Starting point is 00:30:04 uh, what? Yeah, I went went with I went with double jeopardy because My my wait, are you talking about double jeopardy from like the tooth? What year did you say it was? 1999 okay, so this is like so just based on what I remember about who's in this movie I think it's probably double jeopardy because my memory of double indemnity is that It probably wouldn't be a movie with like fun little jokes like that So I'm gonna say double jeopardy. Wait, you think spooky is like a funny name No, I think spooky is like a thing that a screenwriter would be like This is this is clever because of what happens in the film and I feel like double indemnity is not
Starting point is 00:30:43 Don't know is like is that like Billy Wilder or something like it's a clever movie In a different way. Yeah, so I think double jeopardy is my guess Okay, that's incorrect God dang it Isaac wouldn't it be fun if on jeopardy you had a little time to talk it through and explain why you're gonna answer what you're gonna answer Oh, everyone would hate that the viewers already hate it enough when the contestants talk to begin with I Know you throw in any extra thing after getting one right or something They the people that watch the people that people opposed about watching I should say they get so angry. It's it's hilarious
Starting point is 00:31:23 they get so angry it's hilarious. Gosh, okay, so Double Indemnity, I thought it was like a film noir movie from what I remember. And the question is, is there a cat named Spooky in the 40s? I guess that's kind of an antiquated term. Sure, we'll say Double Indemnity. I love when I set up the example that two people could get it wrong and the third person will give me a gimme gimme point
Starting point is 00:31:46 And it happens immediately Interact Patrick what's the remaining answer? I'm gonna go ahead go out on a limb because I don't think it's double jeopardy and I don't think it's double indemnity I'm gonna say it's neither Okay, let's talk about a little more. Okay. Yeah, I what really drove you to Okay, let's talk about a little more. Okay, yeah. Why, what really drove you to, yes, that is correct. That is the right answer.
Starting point is 00:32:07 I'm getting a sense of how Patrick won the previous week. You're figuring it out. Yeah, he's just there, but this means that, Chris, you get to go first on this next one, and again, you'd have to, both you and Isaac would have to miss this one for Patrick to score another point. So let's see what happens, Chris. And again, you'd have to both you and Isaac would have to miss this one for Patrick to score another point.
Starting point is 00:32:26 So let's see what happens, Chris. Oh, I see. We're framing it as it's good that I'm going first. Okay, cool. Yeah. Well, you do have you do have three to pick from that, which arguably is harder, but also you you you know, you could just know that know the answer. I could just know the answers or figure it out. Yeah, yeah, if you just know it going first is great. Okay, so
Starting point is 00:32:51 Double indemnity double jeopardy or neither has the tagline murder isn't always a crime Murder isn't always a crime. First of all, I think I disagree with the premise of this movie slogan I'm going to go with double jeopardy again. I can't imagine that was the slogan for double indemnity. So I'm going double jeopardy. That is correct. It is double jeopardy. The reason they say murder is not because of the crime that they're committing. It's because they're committing a crime that they're committing.
Starting point is 00:33:18 So I'm going double jeopardy. So I'm going double jeopardy. So I'm going double jeopardy. So I'm going double jeopardy. So I'm going double jeopardy. That is correct. It is double jeopardy. Because the reason they say murder isn't always a crime is because the movie has this ridiculous premise that, you know, you can't I mean, I guess there's some truth to it, but they
Starting point is 00:33:41 the whole movie, the idea is that somebody can't be charged for the same murder twice hmm, and so I Don't I forget how it works, but there's you know, there's a twist with you know, somebody being murdered twice people loved it, I think and I remember being like whatever I I remember being like, whatever. I haven't seen it. I'm more of a double indemnity person, if you ask me. I haven't seen it, but I hope that there's a twist of like,
Starting point is 00:34:11 oh, you can't convict me because it's double jeopardy. And then at the very end, somebody's like, yeah, but I'm gonna sue you in civil court for damages. And then they'll make a... Exactly. That's the part where that needs to be like in the, you know, the director's cut or something. They need to add that in because I think it's just, I think it just ends with like, yeah, you can't, you can't do that to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Isaac, are
Starting point is 00:34:40 you ready? Sure. Everyone's on the board but you. Double Jeopardy, Double Indemnity, or Neither takes place in Portland, Oregon. Gosh. I don't know. I feel like film noir doesn't take place in Portland. Or wouldn't it be funny if Double Indemnity is not a film noir? I am thinking of the complete wrong movie.
Starting point is 00:35:04 I'm going to go with Neither. You say Neither film takes place in Portland, Oregon. That's, that is what I said. Well then you're on the board because that is correct. Yes, all right. Neither was, Neither was the place where it takes place because Double Indemnity is in Los Angeles and double jeopardy is in an island on the coast of Washington state.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Ah, okay. So it's definitely in that region up there. So that was potentially going to cause confusion but... I didn't know enough exactly and I mostly brought up Portland because I'm gonna be there with a big November 2nd at helium comedy club at 420 in the afternoon we got a tie game going here Patrick but you're ready first you're you're gonna get the first shot at this one. Okay, when this movie was filmed, both lead actors had already won Oscars. Is it double jeopardy, double a W or neither?
Starting point is 00:36:18 I'm gonna say, oh, man. I'm gonna say double indemnity. That is incorrect. Chris, now you're in the catbird. See, you only have you got a 50-50 here. Yeah, it mainly hinges on do I think I think Ashley Judd is the lead of double jeopardy and do I think she won an Oscar ever? Question mark.
Starting point is 00:36:47 No, you know, nonetheless before 1999, I'm going to say I don't think she won an Oscar. I'm just assuming actually Judd is in Double Jeopardy. I'm going to say that it's neither neither film. That I, you know, I don't know about the logic in getting there, but that is correct. Neither film has two leads that both won Oscars. The reason for potential confusion is because Tommy Lee Jones did win an Oscar
Starting point is 00:37:20 a few years prior to this movie, but the other three leading actors never won an Oscar at all. Barbara Stanwyck was nominated four times, including double indemnity, and just never won. But she got one later for, you know, one of the honorary Oscars that they give somebody when they fuck up and don't get an Oscar. Four times they had the chance. Fred McMurray feels like he should have an Oscar four times. They had the chance Fred McMurray feels like he should have an Oscar though, isn't it? Yeah, I think I don't know I know he was nominated for that movie and maybe maybe something else, but he's got amies galore because he's
Starting point is 00:37:57 On TV for years and yeah Okay, so and you know also the guys probably got had when he was alive he probably had endless supply of flubber right you know that's gotta be that's gonna come in handy stuff's better than silly putty the things that can do okay who got the point there, Chris? So Isaac, you're up first. Has a 95% score rating on the popcorn meter, that's the general public, on Rotten Tomatoes. 95% score. Wow. Okay. All right. My logic here is that only people who are seeking out film noir, which
Starting point is 00:38:49 double indemnity may or may not be a part of the genre, only people seeking it out are going to enjoy it anyway. So I'm going to say this applies to double indemnity. That is correct. Yes. you guys are getting this now Of course a classic movie double-indemnity film lovers and film noir lovers obviously give it a great score and Double Jeopardy on the other hand still fresh because I think anything over 59 is fresh 61 percent 59 is fresh 61% Now I should say and it's but that's the people not the critics. I think that the critical number for double jeopardy is like 28 Pretty rough. Okay, Patrick. This is your chance to push this. Yeah, three-way tie. Here we go
Starting point is 00:39:50 Double jeopardy double a deputyy or neither. Currently available on Netflix. Oh, wow. I'm going to say, I mean, look, Netflix is the app now where I don't go to it when I want to watch something. I feel like I can never find anything that I actually want to watch on there Which makes me think double jeopardy is on there Wait what you said I never I never go to Netflix anymore and I never want to watch double jeopardy So I feel like it's probably Yes, yeah, I heard the other movie in my brain. It's like why is he so angry? I get it with the double jeopardy thing. That's incorrect.
Starting point is 00:40:30 Wow. Chris, for the game, for the win. I don't. Your answer is which one is it? So I don't think double indemnity is going to be on Netflix either. I can't imagine the algo and I call it the algo pulling that forward and like auto populating seven different thumbnails of that conversation they have about like you're going too fast. Well, she'd write me a ticket or whatever.
Starting point is 00:41:03 Could be wrong. I'm going to go with neither. You just like saying neither, because I would set the whole thing up saying is neither. Oh, that's I got you just like to like have fun with it, because, you know, I mean, when somebody says neither or neither and the other other person says the other way, does it sound like they're trying to correct them? the other way, does it sound like they're trying to correct them? Oh, I didn't. That wasn't my intent. I decided not to pick the film double indemnitai. Neither or neither is the correct answer. Congratulations, Chris. You did it. I would want to note though that double jeopardy for anyone who really wants to know what the premise is after my terrible description I can check it out on Paramount Plus. It is available but unfortunately double
Starting point is 00:41:56 indemnity I guess you can you know there's there's definitely places where you can pay to watch it, you know pay a few bucks but with all the streamers we have I always try to lead people to streamers because You know, it's like it's like you were saying about Netflix all the streamers if you have all of them You know any movie that comes up that you want to see I mean, of course, that's not the case But that's I think that's how it should be if you're spending that many, that much money on so many different streamers. More fun conversations like that. Plus the game is going to decide it all after these words. We are back. That was a lot of words and thank you for listening to them. Chris won the game in our first half.
Starting point is 00:42:49 So that means Chris is gonna get to go first in this next game we're gonna play, but we'll flip the order around and it'll go Chris, then Patrick, then Isaac. And the game is called, the little search engine that could. I typed a word into the search engine on IMDB and then I wrote down the top 11 movies with that word in the title according to IMDB's weird algorithm. You, the three of you, will take turns guessing titles that have that word in it. If you can't think of one, you know, my advice is just make something up
Starting point is 00:43:35 that has the word cat in it because that is our word today. Cat. Yeah, in honor of all the fake news coming out of Ohio I Chose the word cat it has appeared in the title of about a thousand movies So Chris you will guess first hoping to guess number one on the list because you'll get 11 points all the way down to The number 11 on the list is worth one point and you'll each ultimately get three guesses will take turns until you've each guessed three times and then we'll add them up and determine a winner okay Chris are there lots of titles popping into your head you have to pick one I got three titles in my head so I'm trying to pick which one I think is the top because um, which one's the number one movie Yeah, I don't think I have the number one
Starting point is 00:44:29 Uh searched today Oh searched today as well. Well, I guess if we're basing in on recents, you know, I don't know I'll just take this one out of my head right now. I'm gonna go with uh, this the search was cat. I'm gonna go with cats plural The search was cat. I'm gonna go with cats plural That is a terrific guess didn't even cross my mind that that would be a guess And certainly that indicates that it's not on the list Wow, I was gonna guess that Yeah, I don't know what that's about Seems like people will be looking that up if for no other reason than, uh,
Starting point is 00:45:07 you know, enemy of the state, uh, Taylor Swift, uh, quite the topic of conversation these days. I mean, enemy of the other state. Is that how I should have phrased it? Oh, I see. Yeah. Trump just straight up just posted on social media. I hate Taylor Swift. That's the whole post truly insane Really crazy. I thought I thought you had an enemy to like public pop cultures with it It's wild living through pop culture moments that we'll all remember together, you know, yeah That's so funny. Anyway, and sad. It's funny and sad. Okay. So, sorry, Chris. No points, but you're still in this.
Starting point is 00:45:56 We're still going to come back to you for two more titles. You said you have three. Let's see if one of the others pilfer is your title Patrick. Yeah. Earlier we mentioned Abigail Breslin. I'm going to name a movie that her brother Spencer Breslin stars in, which I think is 2003's The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers. You know there's no extra points for too much information. You don't get any PMI'm just I'm just having points. I'm just having fun.
Starting point is 00:46:28 It is fun, right? Yeah. And you came up with a good one because it's number three. Wow. That's worth nine points for Patrick. Of course, we're talking about the cat in the hat that starred the love guru himself. Mike Myers and that other person you mentioned, Patrick. Spencer Breslin. Yeah. Oh, he's a, he was the kid in that Bruce Willis movie.
Starting point is 00:46:58 The kid, yeah. Disney's the kid. He was the kid in that movie. What was it called? Disney's the kid he was the kid in that movie. What was it? Disney's the kid I know that was crazy. Okay, I think there's two above Cat in the Hat that you could name and snag more points or you could just build up points with any guess it's got a
Starting point is 00:47:29 Number of points attached to it. What do you think? I'm gonna choose neither Doug. Let's see. I'm gonna go Um, I don't know. I feel like I read recently that they were gonna reboot this movie or maybe they already did or something Maybe I'm crazy. But for some reason the first thing that came to mind was the Disney film that darn cat. Mmm to mind was the Disney film that darn cat. Yeah, maybe they are going to redo it because cats are still, you know, they really have an attitude and, um, you would, you know, find yourself saying that, uh, only cat owners do. And that is number 11. All right. I just, just squeaked in there. All right.
Starting point is 00:48:06 On the board. The reason that I went with the top 11, to be honest with you, because that Dark Cat as a title doesn't get enough props because I love any title with an exclamation point in it. Also just borderline swearing for a 1965 Disney movie. That was a pretty wild title and that's worth one point. You're on the board, Isaac. Excellent.
Starting point is 00:48:34 It's a process you got to build on what you've started so far. And Chris, you have to start something right now. Did those guys take your other two cat films or do you still have two locked in those? No, I still have two. I'm going to say my other one, which I didn't say because I think it's just maybe too old to have showed up in a recent... I don't know how they populate the answers here. Also, by the way, I'm curious what you think of the film the informant since it has an exclamation point in it Um, I love that. I love that the informant. It's absolutely unnecessary that exclamation point. I guess it tells you
Starting point is 00:49:16 Comedy, you know, it doesn't sound because anything called the informant might just sound like a serious drama Yeah, um, but my my favorite one of all time has to be for tv sitcoms. It was claghorn That's just like what? Why? For movies, it was Aronofsky's mother. Oh, yeah. Why is that? I mean, it's just that's the great thing about the exclamation point, is it's often just a decision that's made so it doesn't even make sense.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Stylistic. There's so many movies, The Towering Infernono that should have an exclamation point. You know, I mean, most movie titles are trying to sound big and grand and exciting. And then these movies that aren't any of those things have exclamation points. It's amazing. So that's our cat. We covered that.
Starting point is 00:50:02 So I think so. I'm just worried this is too old but this is the first thing I thought of which is cat people the Natasha Kinsky Oh basically the movie that I was too scared to ever watch as a kid I have to ask you is a that answer prompts a question that I have to ask cat people from 1982 or 1942 I think the Natasha Kinsky is the 82 one so I'll go with that one. You're saying cat people 1982? I mean I'll be astounded if the 1940s cat people is in the top 11 I mean I don't even think this one's going to be in the top 11 so I'll go with the 80s one. I don't even think this one's gonna be in the top 11. So I'll go with the 80s one.
Starting point is 00:50:44 Well, maybe today, Chris, is the day that you start believing in yourself because no more self-denigrating comedy. You're gonna have to be one of those comics that knows everything. Number one on the list is Cat People from 1982 by Maratasya Kinski. Why?
Starting point is 00:51:06 That's crazy. 11 points. I have theories. See it's basically the search engine on IMDB. So it's movies and actors and things just people are looking up related to the movies. And you know, I typed in cat. And of course, there were, Catherine or Cate Blanchett came up, anybody with C-A-T in their name,
Starting point is 00:51:31 but also the movies come up and it's all just listed popularity. And then I just narrow it down to just the movies and make this list. So my theory is that either there's rumblings of making a new cat people. I think there might be like even maybe a streaming series version of cat people. I think there's something going on.
Starting point is 00:51:56 So people are just looking up cat people just to see what the hell that was. Because you're right. Even 82 is has been a while, but I love that movie. I mean, it's very moody and by today's standards, it's kind of slow, but it's got that amazing David Bowie song, Cat People, in it. That was used again, weirdly, in Glorious Basterds. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:52:25 It's a, which really threw me out of that movie, but then certainly the whole movie itself throws you out of it because it's, you know, rewrite of history. But, but yeah, cat people, uh, Ed Bagley Jr. gets his arm ripped off at one point in the film. Interesting tidbit. Um, so Chris, you got 11 points for that. And so that puts you in the lead over Patrick, but it's his turn next and lots of points here are available.
Starting point is 00:52:53 What's your next guest, Patrick? I do want to say they also just had on the Criterion channel, they had all of Paul Schroeder's movies. So I wonder if that's why. Oh, that could be. That might be the reason. My guess, again, an old movie. I don't know if it's gonna be on there cat on a hot tin roof Cat on the hot tin roof is Interesting to me because I've seen it and I pretty sure isn't even there's not a cat in it I don't think there's any discussion about that
Starting point is 00:53:22 I don't think there's any discussion about that I don't think there's not a cat in it And I don't think there's any discussion of what kind of roof they have all Newman's a cool cat Doug Exactly what it is and it's number six on the list from 1955 Patrick is now up to 15 points. So he has taken the lead. Isaac, this is not over.
Starting point is 00:53:48 You still have two guesses left. Yeah. I have to clarify something. Based on cats failing to register, are there no plural cats in this list? Is it all singular cat? That's an interesting question. I got to say, it's not all just cat, C-A-T.
Starting point is 00:54:06 Okay. All right. Well then, I think I have to... this movie popped into my head, based, you know, sort of like my Japanese knowledge. I know literally nothing about this movie other than that it exists. So I will say the truth about cats and dogs. Oh Should absolutely be on the list. I don't know what is happening with the erasure of Jeanine Garofalo in movies because That movie was very popular at one point Romeo and Michelle's high school reunion was super popular and you don't hear much about it anymore and And she was in a ton of movies Copland anyway
Starting point is 00:54:58 Unfortunately, it's not on the list Wow, yeah, I will not stand for this Ben Chaplin erasure The erasures that are going on here Did it raise your joint the score for this movie? Because or is it the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Eraser that I'm thinking of? Sorry, Isaac. That's okay. The lead is insurmountable for you at this point. Almost like we should go to a commercial and come back and you're not at your podium. But please stick around. Chris, what's your final guess? This is your chance. Okay. I'll just talk through my options. One was the family film, Cats
Starting point is 00:55:40 and Dogs, the Sean Hayes vehicle. But I think I'm going to go by this reasoning that there's this weird upswell of interest in some reboot that I've never heard of. And I'm going to go with the old cat people. Well, of course, I did ask, it was kind of a clue when I said, well, which year is the cat people you're referring to when the cap people was first guest. And that's because it does appear twice on this list and it is number seven on the list.
Starting point is 00:56:16 But that's worth five points, which gives you a total of 16 points, Chris, and Patrick has 15 and one guess. Okay I have two in my head right now and I'm gonna say both of them out loud and then tell you which one I'm choosing because they're both weird. My boy Fritz you know Fritz the cat. Oh that Fritz. That Fritz, not Lang or anyone else. No. My boy.
Starting point is 00:56:48 You know my boy, Fritz. Or, and this is a weird one, and I don't know if it would count because of this cat fitting into different words. Truly one of the first ones that popped in my head was, catch me if you can. Oh. It's got to be in there.
Starting point is 00:57:07 I feel like both of them could be in there. I'm going to say Fritz. The cat. Yeah. Fritz the cat. Why are you so, so casual? Like we're friends, Doug. We're friends. I grew up in Southern California.
Starting point is 00:57:23 So what I hear just Fritz, I think of the weatherman Fritz Coleman, who is also a stand-up comedian. But that aside, number five on the list is Fritz the Cat. We love that. We love it. Seven more points for Patrick. So he once again is the winner of the game. Congratulations, Patrick. Thank you. Thank you. You get to do your plugs first. So he once again is the winner of the game. Congratulations.
Starting point is 00:57:47 Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You get to do your plugs first. What would you like to plug? Yeah. I produced a show called the George Lucas talk show with Connor Alec and Griffin Newman. We talked about it a few weeks ago. Connor plays George Lucas. Griffin plays Watto. We interview real people as themselves. Insane people have been on Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Meyers, a lot of crazy people. You can find it all on YouTube. If you're in LA, I produce Ask Hat on Sunday nights at UCB. We've also been doing live readings of the Star Wars movies and we're
Starting point is 00:58:15 doing Revenge of the Sith on November, I think it's 16th at Dynasty Typewriter, a full all-star cast that's really crazy. Haley Jelosman is Anakin, that's all you need to know. Is there anything else? We're doing live George Lucas talk shows in New York on October 18th, I think. It's a Friday at the Bell House and October 19th at New York Comic-Con. And then on November 9th,
Starting point is 00:58:37 we're doing it at Smod Castle in New Jersey and Kevin Smith is gonna be the guest. You can follow me on Instagram at Kner on Twitter at PatrickKotner. I think that's it. Love it. Great job. I will hit you up soon to have you back as a returning champion. And before I talk to my other guests, what everybody wants to know, the movies on the
Starting point is 00:59:03 list that you missed? Number 11, of course is that dark at number 10? Boy, you're really onto something there Patrick catch me. Oh, wow Yeah, and then it really worked out that if you had decided it's not go with your friend Fritz and instead Catch me if you can that would have been worth two points And you still would have won the game with that Crazy, so either way you were safe. So I was just sitting there going just say what already Totally checked out from the podcast Listen I got
Starting point is 00:59:41 Nine a Yugoslavian film from 1998 called Black Cat, White Cat. Above the truth about cats and dogs? What is going on IMDB? I don't know why people are into this Black Cat, White Cat movie all of a sudden. Number eight is one of those animes that was produced by Miyazaki's company, but directed by someone else, but it's called the cat returns, uh, from 2002. Then we had the old cat people, then cat on a hot tin roof. It's the cat. Number four,
Starting point is 01:00:19 uh, Oscar nominated and actually won one for, I believe Lee Marvin cat balloon 1965 Yeah Then we had cat in the hat and number two. I was confident that no one would guess this unless they happened upon it Wherever the hell it played. I had never heard of this and though it came out allegedly in 2023 a movie starring Maybe it's because Nicholas Braun is in it. Maybe there's huge interest in him, but it's a movie called cat person That's based off of like a New Yorker article or something. Oh, yeah, it's like it's based on a short story. Yeah Yeah, yeah, I should have guessed
Starting point is 01:01:10 Probably on his shelf because it sounds like it's about maybe a childless cat lady Who knows Chris grace, thank you for being here. Thank you for doing this. What would you like to plug? My new stand-up special, Chris Grace as Scarlett Johansson has been released on Dropout TV. You can go to dropout.tv. I want everyone to know Chris's special is very, very good. They should all check it out. And is it true that the role of you was originally gonna be played by Scarlett Johansson,
Starting point is 01:02:12 but she backed out after the public outcry? Yeah, I believe that you originally had booked Scarlett for this podcast and I was called in at the last moment. All right. Isaac Hirsch, thank you for joining us today. What do you want to promote, dude? Now we didn't mention in your intro at the beginning that you are a stand-up comedian. It's true.
Starting point is 01:02:35 I am an erstwhile comedian, but my plugs are much less impressive than the prior two plugs. You can follow me on social media at Ivy Hirsch and watch the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions whenever that ends up happening. That's a pretty impressive plug I think. Yeah, it'll be sometime in 2025. Doug plugs Tuesday night Los Angeles.
