Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as it pop or kernels in his teeth
They're still not one that he won't see
Cause Doug loves movies
Hey, hey, hey everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies.
This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Thursday afternoon, August 29th
2024
Easily mistaken for a Wednesday and we have a very special
Bonus episode this month. This one is a crossover event
the expression I love
To use my guests today, you, from the George Lucas talk show,
it's Patrick Cottnoyer, Griffin Newman and Connor Ratliff.
Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.
We're trying to all. That's what we're trying to do.
Yeah, it sounds like that sounded like three stooges in a cave. Hello. Hello. We're trying to all... That's what we're trying to do. Yeah.
It sounds like, that sounded like three stooges in a cave.
That's how people usually describe us, so that makes sense.
Hello.
Let's meet everybody individually and as I do alphabetically by first name.
Yes.
I never get this. I always get last name way back to school. Name yes
I always get last name way back to school. This is such a rare thing to be at the front of the alphabet
It's so exciting
And I'm happy to introduce you first because it also just makes sense from the standpoint of
describing the George Lucas talk show because it is the portrayer of George Lucas himself Connor Ratliff hey Connor hello thanks for
being here and so tell us about first the the show and then the documentary about the show.
Well, the show is just celebrating its 10th anniversary as this weird in-person, usually
in New York City, but then over the years the pandemic and other things changed the
shape of it.
But just this, it's just a very normal talk show
where I pretend to be retired filmmaker George Lucas and interview real guests being themselves.
And it started when I was in college and George Lucas started re-releasing the old Star Wars
movies and changing things about them. And I would. I started doing this impression of George for my friends where people would ask me,
hey, George, why did you do this?
I'd always have an answer for why George did it.
Then at a certain point when I've been doing comedy in
New York at a bright citizens' brigade theater,
I thought maybe people would come see a talk show
if George Lucas's name was in the title.
It turns out that they did. They did come see a talk show if George Lucas's name was in the title and and it turns out that they did
They did come see it
Yeah, 10 years that's uh, that's super impressive and um, i'm excited to
to have you here today, but
there is also a thing to plug on your part because
the uh
Documentary about the show is available now
Yeah, and and the documentary
Started being made before the pandemic and it was sort of intended to document
You know this show that you could only see if you were in New York, and I kind of
These filmmakers who were fans of the show they they offered, Hey, you know, no one
ever sees this unless they're in the room. How about we film one of your shows professionally?
So you have one that has like multiple cameras and good audio. And we thought that sounds great.
And then I, I sort of thought back to, you know, when I was growing up, I used to, you know,
I grew up in Missouri and I would hear about stuff happening
in New York or LA, you know, and, you know, weird comedy shows like at Largo in LA and stuff like
that. And I thought, oh man, if there was a documentary back then about any of those shows
that I couldn't go see, I'd really be into it. So I sort of said, hey, do you want to make a
documentary about, you know, just about the
show as an example of the kind of thing that happens, you know,
everywhere, where there's every local scene has some weird stuff
that has its own little passionate following. But it's
usually just for the people in the room. Now, since since they
started making the documentary, you know, the pandemic, turn the
show into a live stream. So our audience sort of broadened
geographically considerably. Most of the people who've ever seen the show have seen it since then. So the
documentary became a little, became a little bit broader in scope, covering like what, not just
what the show was, but also a little bit of what it is now. And this documentary, what's it called?
It's called I'm George Lucas, a Connor Ratliff story, which is a play,
which is a play on a now completely defunct way of titling Star Wars movies.
When Disney used to do their off, when Disney was going to put out a
Star Wars movie every year, their off year non-episode ones were called
a Star Wars story and the thing they did twice.
I guess we're the, we guess we're the third one. It's a comedy rule of three is like we're the third movie that sort of used that structure
With the doc. Yeah, I guess two of the Star Wars movies are
You know made up and the rest are documentaries. That's right
Yeah, so our movie sort of bridges the gap between those two. It's both a documentary and a story.
Well right on our next guest today that I would like to introduce is
Not only a recurring guest on the show already. He portrays Watto on the George Lucas talk show
It's Griffin Newman. Hey Griffin. Oh Doug. Thank you for having us on. It's so nice to be back.
Yeah, it's always a pleasure to have you,
and you're awful good at the games on the show.
One of the better guests we've had over the years.
Competitive, yeah.
How do you think you'll fare today against these dudes?
I mean, I think Connor and Patrick both have really good trivia brains. All the info is in there.
Patrick might be more competitive than I am, or at the very least more focused.
Connor might struggle with some of the structure.
But this is because, you know, Connor's like a jazz comedian.
He's an improviser.
He doesn't like boundaries.
He's looking to explore spaces.
So we might get stuck in some cul-de-sacs clarifying rules, is my guess.
Well, that's good to know.
I end up in those cul-de-sacs frequently because my you know, they're just silly games and I you know, and smoke a few bowls and come up with them so they don't always make sense.
Not to get political right out of the gate, but I'm I'm what a disgraced former president Donald trump refers to as a choke artist meaning that under pressure. I forget
Uh a lot of the things I know
Okay, that's fair
He knows a lot political so political so early, you know, he knows a hell of a lot for being such a political firebrand
Well, all right, uh our third guest
simply Well, all right, our third guest, simply, Cottenor on Instagram, which always impresses me when someone gets either their first or last name solely that as their Instagram or
social media handle.
It's Patrick Cottenor.
Hello, Patrick.
I got in early.
That's what it was.
I got in early.
There's a guy who already has Patrick hotner on there
And I'm not sure if this is the same guy, but he does mess up my Google Alerts because he keeps getting DW eyes
So, I don't know if it's him but mad at him for a few reasons, you know, yeah
It sounds like he needs to get it together. You need to hope that it's not actually you in an alternative universe.
That's true. Yeah. I mean, I'll hopefully never meet him.
I can't we can't exist in the same spot. You know,
there is another Griffin Newman who lives in New York City,
who works in like high level investment banking.
And I will semi-regularly get like emails and calls
from headhunters looking to offer incredibly high paying jobs.
And it's just, yeah, no, I'm sure that'll work out really well Patrick for everybody.
Well, not only do I think that it's cool that you have your last name,
simply your last name as your Instagram
but I also
Enjoy that you're on my movie podcast and you know, the back half of your last name is the word who are that's true
That's true. It feels like it was meant to be it really is the nominative determinism
Just your it sounds like your whole thing is like, you know, just the fact that you are so involved with the
George Lucas show. Yeah does seem like you you were born to
Have something to do with cinema the name wielded into the world. So apologies to everyone.
I love it. I absolutely love it.
The last part of Griffin's first name and some of our classiest examples of world cinema. Go on.
Explain explain that, Connor.
A lot of classy, classy foreign films and with Fiends.
F.I.N.
Oh, my God.
Last thing you see in many of our
Cinematic examples
Or you see it at the end of a short that's making fun of French movies, yeah
lot of classy spoofs
Tradition the classy spoof. Yeah, I will say I've seen thin as a joke at the end of a movie more often than as just a normal ending of a French film. There's maybe not a French film that has done it in 80 years.
I think they've gotten so in their head by the pretentious spoof subgenre that they now avoid it.
I will say I was thinking about this and as far as you know, you asked Griffin because he's so good at these games.
I've I've listened to this show for so long.
And it's been one of those shows where like, you know,
it's in the back of your head where you're like, someday
I would love to be on Doug loves movies.
And it hit me today that it was, oh, no, I'm on with Griffin.
What's the point?
Mm hmm.
Which really bummed me out.
Yeah. Now you're setting expectations too high where I feel like I'm destined
for a fall. Well, that's no, we're just saying you're the best unstoppable.
Well, I'd say that, uh, the games have sort of evolved so that, you know,
people that aren't as into film as the three of you are, we'll have some sort of
fighting chance. So there's a lot of guessing involved in the games.
And if you happen to know the answer, then that's all the better.
But at least you can, uh, you can make a guess.
And, uh, before we play those games though, I would like to one at a time,
speak to each of you about, uh, a movie that you would like to recommend.
We'll start with Connor. I would like to recommend We'll start with Connor. I
Would like to recommend yeah, I have a movie I'd like to recommend and it's it's it's Lucas adjacent
But I feel like not enough people have seen it even though it's I believe it's very easy to find on Disney Plus
I think it's currently on Disney Plus
Which is the movie return to Oz?
and and on Disney Plus. I think it's currently on Disney Plus, which is the movie, Return to Oz.
And this is a non-musical
that is like a sequel to The Wizard of Oz,
but it's more like the books. And so it's a children's film that I think in places
is as scary as The Shining.
film that I think in places is as scary as The Shining.
It's really bad. I say that completely seriously. I think is I've gone back and revisit it and there's times where you can tell, Oh yeah, this is, um, this
parts for kids is something that you'll think maybe two or three times in the
movie. It literally, it has like a electroshock therapy and a hallway full of women's heads
that this headless queen keeps in these like, in these cages.
It's just really, really terrifying. Basically, Dorothy
goes back to Oz and everything is ruined. Everything is like,
Dorothy goes back to Oz and everything is ruined everything is like
all of her friends are in some form of like
stasis and Or they've been turned to stone or whatever and she has these new friends her new friends are disturbing
Really? It's really an upsetting movie. It was directed by Walter March
For Rooza bulk. Oh, yeah, for Rooza Balkh?
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
And you know, I don't remember it very well,
uh, because I saw it, you know, when it came out and haven't revisited,
but I'm picturing scary black birds.
Is that a thing?
I think so, yeah.
It's, it's um,
Like crows or something? Yeah, I think there's some crows. Yeah It's it's
Yeah, I think there's some crows Connor this is a good opportunity to plug the GLTS tick-tock account as well
That's right for a long time the Georgia structure tick-tock was just a photo montage of the character tick-tock from return to Oz
Basically George over the Kesha song Kasha song TikTok, correct?
Yes, using the Kasha song TikTok. That's still if you scroll back to the beginning,
that's still our first TikTok, if not our most popular one. But George Lucas's connection
to this was basically like his old pal Walter Murch, who was the sound guy, the sound designer for THX 1138. They went way back. It was the only
film he directed, sadly. And I believe Lucas, the studio was
nervous about it was Disney, they were nervous about him
directing the movie. And George Lucas basically guaranteed he
like personally vouched and he was like if
there's any trouble I'll like take over the film that was his like promise to them that like
he basically it's like co-signing for a loan or a mortgage or something he basically helped uh make
it happen and it is one of the most you know it's from that mid 80s period where like it has,
it's like Disney's return to Oz.
And I think almost everyone who went to see this movie was expecting something else.
And they were not expecting to be terrified at like a Kubrick Friedkin level of terror.
I do genuinely think it's scarier than most horror movies I've ever seen.
Well, you should definitely, you know, I will make a point then of trying to make it part of my,
during October, I watch as many scary movies as I can. So I can put it on my list for movies in
October. Yeah, and one of the characters is a pumpkin for a head, so it's a perfect Halloween movie.
Absolutely.
Griffin, we've run out of time.
We all endorse Return to Oz as a recommended movie.
What would you like to recommend today, Griffin?
I've been doing a watch through of Michael Keaton's career, trying to go through it chronological
order, partly for Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Ramp Up and for another podcast episode I
did on a different movie podcast.
You could say the name of it.
You've talked about this show before.
Just don't say Beetlejuice again.
Not the one I do, but guesting on a third movie podcast.
Such a movie podcast whore.
I know, but I get around. But I'm a movie podcast poly, I would say.
But I've been sort of going through Keaton's filmography chronologically, and a lot of
the ones I hadn't seen were unseen for good reason.
Kind of the mid-forgotten ones.
He has some weird wooly periods.
But two I rewatched that I hadn't seen in forever that I really loved.
And on the topic of semi-pretentious film parodies. Johnny Dangerously, the Amy Heckerling movie
that is sort of her riff on like 30s, 40s gangster movies,
but kind of feels like the Mel Brooks movie
that Mel Brooks never made,
where Michael Keaton's the lead is incredibly fun,
in my opinion, but a little hard to find right now
on streaming.
I bet, yeah.
And it's also kind of Zazz-like, you know, Zuckers and Abrams.
Yes. Yes. It feels like, you know, Amy Heckerlin, who otherwise did like Clueless and Fast Times and
European Vacation and things that are a little more character-based. It's her one movie in that
sort of airplane blazing saddles vein with Keaton and the funniest Joe Piscopo's ever been.
But since it's...
All you could do is show up and step over that bar on the ground.
You know what? I'll even double down. I'll say this. Joe Piscopo is funny in it. Not even the
funniest he's ever been, which does sound passive aggressive. I found him funny in it.
But since that's kind of seemingly unavailable
on streaming, I'll also recommend Clean and Sober,
which was like his first real kind of dramatic swing
playing a drug addict that I think Tim Burton has said
was kind of the thing that pushed him over the edge
to thinking he could play Batman.
And it's a really interesting kind of small character drama that's a little forgotten today.
Yeah, it's interesting. People don't know this, but he also says in that film,
do you want to get nuts? Let's get nuts. He's a therapist, I believe.
He does. You see the thing. Yeah. Yeah. You see the glint in his eye.
All right. So I'm going to make an executive decision because we can only recommend one
movie.
Okay.
And I'm going to tell people I'm going to I'm not adding a recommendation necessarily,
but I am putting my thumb print, my thumb on the scale and saying clean and sober is
your recommendation.
That's my recommendation.
And I'll say just keep on watch to see if Johnny Dangerously ever appears. Yeah, back in the legal stream. That's my recommendation and I'll say just keep on watch to see if Johnny dangerously ever appears. Yeah back in the cleaners
Sobers, that's my recommendation. You can find clean and sober right now
Correct. All right. Can I issue a warning to if there are any children listening to the podcast?
Okay
if if you watch Johnny dangerously and then you start repeating some of the jokes from the movie at school,
there's a character who has a weird accent and says a lot of profanity and kind of an unintelligible almost accent,
you may end up having to explain to your principal the plot of Johnny Dangerously as a way of getting out of being in trouble for using profanity at school
If you use the phrase far Fargan ice hole
You'll end up having a very serious discussion with your principal saying that you were not yet technically using profanity
Yeah, they love that they love the little those little loopholes. Yeah, it's most lovely kids can find
All right, Patrick
Yeah, these two movies. I almost feel like we've got a double bill so far or just absolutely hellish
Few hours what?
Well, I think mine is maybe going to double the runtime of that.
I just rewatched the 1976 King Kong.
Yeah, the Jeff Bridges, Groden, Jessica Lang one. I've sort of been on a Groden kick lately,
but I bought the Scream Factory Blu-ray and it comes with
the TV cut, which makes it like almost four hours long. And it's it's crazy. I mean, it's
like it's very, you know, it feels like one of those seventies disaster movies. The there's
so many extras in the movie. Like it's a huge, huge movie, but it's also kind of boring for a lot of it. And I kind of like that.
Um, it's, um, I don't know. I think it's fun.
You know, there's a shot of like a 70 foot robot King Kong in it, but then
most of it is just like Rick Baker walking around in a suit.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I think it's fun.
I think the, the shout factory, uh, Blu ray is great.
I think there's a lot of cool bonus feature stuff on it and
If you haven't seen it's not the best King Kong movie by any stretch, but it's like it's not bad
And I was at a used book
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's better than some some of Kong, you know
But I was at a used bookstore and I found a mass market paperback of like the making of King Kong
for that movie and I started it last night and I'm very much looking forward to it because
It seems like it was kind of a hellish movie to make
Just because no one could agree on how to make the monkey and how to do so many of the things in it
But that's my recommendation. It's good. It's weird. I
Am I remembering right that son of Kong is like actually kind of wacky.
I actually don't know if I've seen something.
I think Son of Kong, they have the same kind of use the same style of animation
of Kong from the from King Kong.
Yeah, but it's like a more silly.
It's a silly movie.
It makes a lot of that's my memory as well, that it's a little bit of a
bride of Chucky.
Like they're trying to own the self parody a little bit.
Yeah, I think so.
And I think it's as a result, it's kind of it's pretty entertaining.
I think. Well, I didn't realize that the 76 King Kong also has a sequel.
Did you guys know about this?
Yes. With Linda Hamilton, John Ashton.
It's like they spent so much money on all the monkey stuff
that they had to like amortize the cost by just doing another one,
whether or not people wanted it.
But it's 10 years later.
Yeah, they were just the stores locker was costing them through the roof.
They either had to give it up or make another movie. Uh huh.
I remember when when the 76 con came out that everyone just the world just decided Jessica Lange was a terrible actress and that she was going to be a failure.
And for my money, the thing that I like about you mentioned Charles Groton.
I love seeing Charles Groton movies in movies that aren't Charles Grodin movies.
Because he still does his Charles Grodin thing.
Yeah. You know that he did, you know, like for the entire movie
during things like Beethoven and Clifford and stuff.
But like just in little dips and drabs,
like he's suddenly the most interesting character every time he walks in
and playing the bad guy, he rarely did that in his career, strangely.
But that's the other thing that's fun about it.
It's just what an absolute dickhead he is.
I mean, there's only one movie where Charles Grodin gets stepped on by a giant gorilla.
You know? Yeah. Yeah.
And it's the 1976 King Kong.
And it upset me at the time because even though he was playing a villain I knew I knew I like Charles Groten
It was just a shitty way to you know for him to go out. Yeah. Yeah
They apparently
From one of the bonus features they didn't shoot it that way like he wasn't supposed to die there
He was supposed to get away and then in the editing they changed it and made him get stepped on which I think it's I think
It's pretty satisfying
To the sort of God because he's been such an a-hole the whole time that he deserves it
It's you know, and then they stole, you know, they basically just took that trope for every Jurassic Park movie has a character
That's like, you know always, you know arguing with everybody and then you know dies a horrible death
Gruden should have been in Jurassic Park. I'll say it you know, arguing with everybody and then, you know, dies a horrible death. Uh,
grodin should have been in Jurassic park. I'll say it. I'm not scared.
Well, thank you for those recommendations. What a delightful day or two somebody's going to have watching all that stuff.
I don't know if we have anybody that just runs out and watches all the,
all the recommended movies,
but if anybody out there actually does watch these movies do do reach out to me on the Doug Loob's movies account on
X formerly Twitter. We're gonna play some games

We are back and the first game we're gonna play today is called
First time I've ever played it, but I think it's a brilliant premise for a game. It's called cat or dog
Hmm. I'll name a movie
You tell me if the titular character is a cat a dog or neither
Wow
Could be any other animal if it's not a cat or a dog
Connor's gonna be up first no no give them
And you have to guess Connor between dog cat or neither so you
You know one in three chance of getting this right if you miss then Griffin gets a narrow down to a 50-50
Wow Griffin misses and Patrick's gonna get the gimme
Every time somebody gets one right the next person in that order is up first
Gotcha Connor are you ready? I'm ready In that order is up first Gotcha
Connor are you ready? I'm ready, okay?
And this one I'm going to give you the year as a just a little extra clue. Oh, I love it
The year is 1958
Pat dogger neither hunker
Wait can I get a spelling of that name?
T o n k a would you like me to use it in a sentence? Yes, please oh?
Shit here comes Tonka
You're going neither with Tonka you're going neither right out of the gate or a cat or dog yeah
That is the correct answer Wow Wow! The sentence really gave it to me.
What?
That's probably my read too, because I do believe they say that in the film.
Do you have a guess what kind of animal it is?
Well, I'll be honest, I was picturing a truck.
Like an ancient truck, like a talker truck.
But then because of the size and scale of a real truck, then I pictured an elephant. Am I anyone close? the Alright, so Connor is immediately on the board, Griffin gets to go first on this next one.
Uh, Pat Dogger neither from 1922.
A film called King.
Film called King.
Yeah.
Crazy coincidence that King Kong was recommended.
Would you mind using in a sentence, please?
Oh, we should. Here comes.
Oh, OK.
That does and it does complicate it.
I had an instinct and now I'm going the other way.
I'm I'm going to guess that King is a dog.
That unfortunately is incorrect.
God damn it.
Patrick, is it a cat or neither?
Okay.
Now my question here, when you say a cat, does a lion count as a cat?
Like, how flexible are you with the word cat?
Tigers, lions, Panthers.
They're all not hats.
They are lions, tigers and okay.
Okay.
King. You said dog is a no. I'm gonna say neither
That is also crap. You guys are so smart
It's
It's a lion cub
See yeah, and so I was thinking about it was more of a delighted holy shit here comes
Look at how cute that little king is
Uh-huh, you go you little thing. All right, patrick your uh, your buddies have really knocked this one out of the park
Yeah, so we'll see what you can do
with a film from
1994
I want to say
But my own handwriting is terrible.
Wait, no, my buddies didn't knock it out of the park.
I knocked it out of the park and Connor.
He got a point.
I'm at zero.
I got a good Griffin did not Griffin famously kept it in the park.
Oh, I apologize.
I'm so used to Griffin winning that I know to fix it.
So he was again today.
I'm just taking a casual so he wins again today.
I'm just taking a casual walk in the park, but firmly inside the grounds.
Alright, well that changes everything.
That means that Connor is up first on this next one, and he has a chance.
To leap into the lead.
Connor, dog tagging either.
From 1994, Andre. From 1994, Andre?
I'm gonna say dog.
Going dog with Andre. That is incorrect.
Oh no! No!
I know this movie. I believe I saw it in theaters. I think this is the
Cana Marjorie,
seal slash sea lion picture.
So I'm gonna go other.
Or neither.
Yes, exactly.
Neither is correct.
It is a seal and they shot it simultaneously
with Waterworld.
Oh, wow, okay. Not really, she was much younger. She was much younger with Waterworld. Oh, wow. Okay.
Not really. She was much younger.
She was much younger in Waterworld.
Soggy summer.
But she definitely was like, oh, water again?
She called her agents and said, get me a Western, please.
I need to dry out.
Alright, we got a three- way tie going and it's back.
Here we go.
Patrick dog cat or neither from 1949 Rusty's birthday.
Wow. What do you think? What do you think Rusty is? God,
I'm going to say, man, I mean, we've had a trend and now it's like, does he break the trend or does he keep going?
I'm going to say it's a dog.
It sounds sad about it.
I am sad about it because I don't think it's right.
It is right. It is a dog.
Wow.
Wow. Wow.
There was a whole series of Rusty movies and Rusty's birthday was my favorite because I
love when a dog has a birthday.
European vacation, Vegas vacation.
Patrick's got two.
Great.
Back to Connor.
Oh no
I do not know the year of this film, but I believe is in the 2000s
2010s It's more recent. I think it's in fact, it's 2014. I think and
The film is called
Cool cat saves the kids
is cool cat a cat a dog or neither I Cool cat saves the kids is
Cool cat a cat a dog or neither. I
Mean is the trick that it seems so obvious
Or is the trick that it is so obvious that I'm gonna trick myself out of
I
Don't know those the cool cat that was part of the late 60s Warner Brothers
Series of the Dupati Freeling
Era of shorts, but I don't believe that that IP has been revived by Warner Brothers. I don't think cool cat from that iteration has come back
Cool cat saves the kids. I'm gonna go ahead because I feel like if it's a trick that I've been
by all means trick away. I'm gonna say it's a cat movie.
It is a cat movie.
Wow. So I was right to think that the trick was that there was no trick.
This is like M. Night Shyamalan's trap. The trick is in the title.
It's like the happening. Are you watching? And things are happening.
Yeah.
All right.
He told you. He admitted it.
He admitted it. He's straight upset.
It's gonna be happening. Okay, so we've that forces a tie situation and we have to get out of the park.
Have to have a winner of this game.
So to break the tie, we are going to go to Patrick and you get the first shot here, Patrick.
You get this right. You're a winner.
If you miss Connor gets a shot, he gets it. He'll be our winner.
Both of you miss it. I'm going to declare Griffin the winner of this right. You're a winner. If you miss Connor gets a shot, he gets it. He'll be our winner. If both of you miss it, I'm going to declare Griffin the winner of this game. Oh my gosh.
By default.
Yeah. He's getting a big lucky default win. Wow. Both of you miss on this.
Uh huh.
But Patrick, you're first. From 1991. Bingo.
Bingo. Bingo.
Um. I'm gonna say.
Oh man.
I'm gonna say neither.
Neither is incorrect.
Connor.
I'm gonna say dog.
Think bingo is a dog.
I do think bingo is a dog.
I think you're right, bingo is a dog.
I saw this movie in theaters as well.
The poster's got a dog wearing sunglasses, right?
It sure does. It sure does.
Wow.
Yeah, I forget who's in it, but it gets more ridiculous from there, I think.
And the sunglasses are the coolest thing about Bingo.
And congratulations.
Connor won that game, and that means, well, I'll tell you what it means right
after these messages.
We'll be right back.
We are back.
And since Connor won cat or dog, that means he gets to go first.
This is an important position to be in.
He gets to go first in our second and final game
that will determine overall winner today.
And so the order in this next game starts with Connor,
then we go to Patrick, and then we go to Griffin.
Here we go.
It's a game I call the little search engine that could.
Oh no.
I type a word into the search engine on IMDB and then I wrote down the top 10 titles that
Include that word
Once I tell you the word as I said Connor's gonna go first
He's going to name a movie that he thinks might be in the top 10
movies on IMDB with that word in the title. As of, and this is as of today by their popularity algorithm
today, you have to name movies and if it's on the list, you get the number of points that goes with
where it is on the list. Number one is worth of points that goes with where it is on the list.
Number one is worth 10 points.
Number 10 is worth one point.
And you get the idea of what everything
is gonna be worth.
And-
You can use the word be redemption.
You'll each get,
you'll each get,
there's gotta be, I don't know if there's 10 movies
with the word redemption in it.
I wouldn't be surprised thanks to you know straight to
You know straight to video as easy
Know the words gonna have it's gonna be a little slightly more common word
They're redemption a word I picked out special for the three of you and
You'll each get three guesses, so you know keep coming back to you to name another one and see how high it is on the list.
And so, Connor, the word.
Of course, I had to do star.
Hmm.
I'm probably gives you some ideas right away
I'll say a star is born. Do I have to give you parentheses for the year?
No, you don't have to state the year on this one
Because
There's what how many stars borns at this point for I think I think there's four of them
so I wouldn't presume to think that
any of the ones that didn't have Lady Gaga in them are being searched today on IMDB.
So you get points because it is number seven on the list. Lucky 11 here from 2018 and
That means that you get four points Connor starting off strong
for
Lots of points still on the board and of course exact titles are important, but every time I play
Games with people where I want the exact title,
they all just don't even say Star Wars titles anymore because they're too confused by them.
But Patrick, I feel like you might have a good guess here, but what do you think?
Yeah, I'm gonna say Star Wars colon episode IV dash IV, dash a new hope.
Is that the way IMDB does it?
I think, I think that you got all the punctuation.
I think that's correct.
I'm not a slave to the specific punctuation.
I just wanted to get exact.
I wanted to get exact title.
Yeah.
It's just always wild to me.
They like, I still can't get over that mission impossible has a colon after the word mission
But Star Wars episode for a new hope is number one
Patrick is out of the gate with ten points
Not a number that can't be beat
But Griffin you want to try to get the number two or three movie
that's got the word star in the title.
It's most search on Google as of today, you're saying.
I am.
I am going to say. Star Wars Episode eight, the last Jedi.
Interesting guess by an interesting player.
Thank you.
Number 10 on the list, it's worth one whopping point,
one whopping point, which is better than zero.
Mm hmm. But by so little little I might have overthought it
Connor
Second guess
Star Wars cool in episode 5
the Empire Strikes Back
Number eight on the list that's worth another three points for
Connor. I should be making a mark next to the ones that you're
staying smart way to do it. All right, we're back to Patrick who
has 10 points so you can really, really add on here with the
right answer.
Okay. So I'm, I'm thinking we go to a different franchise
because I think these might also be up there.
And I think the first JJ Star Trek, maybe
the first JJ Abrams Star Trek from
2009 off the top of my head. That sounds correct.
Also, that's what I have written here, because it is number two on the way.
Oh, damn it. I hate what's happening here.
Patrick is just a natural
at figuring out this weird game.
All right. So that means Griffin, you really,
you really need some big points here.
OK, well, he's got one and two locked up.
So I feel like I'm there's an insurmountable lead possibly already building.
But I. It's not.
Well, it's not. OK. OK.
Mountable, sir.
I'm going's mountable. It's mountable. Okay. Okay. Mountable, sir. I'm, I'm going to say, so hop in.
That is part of the year long 25th anniversary hoopla that
Star Wars Episode One, the Phantom Menace is currently ranking higher
in the Star Wars canon.
Which one again?
Star Wars Episode One, the Phantom Menace. Which one again?
Star Wars Episode 1, The Phantom Menace.
Debut film of Watto the Toydarian Trump Dealer.
Oh, so it's extra special to you.
That movie came in right in the middle at number five.
That's six points. the whole
, to this idea of maybe fixing the game so I win is it too late to reengage that conversation?
I just I really thought I did. Wow.
Because I because I know that you really like Star Trek more than Star Wars.
Of course.
But Connor just for fun let's see if you can bang out another one on this list? Um, I'm, I'm, are there, are there titles on this list in which star is not its own
word but is part of a larger word?
Great question.
Can't answer it.
Okay.
Cool.
Can't answer it, won't answer it.
I mean, it's just the word star has to be in there somewhere, but that's another thing
is weird about the algorithm is sometimes
You know like let's say there was a Clarice Starling movie
Yeah, then you know it might be on there, and it might not you know based on the factors of our people
Typing it in currently and also
Is the IMGB algorithm that smart?
Mm hmm. Yeah. I mean, I think that I think the D stands for dumb sometimes.
I don't feel like guessing another Star Wars title. I kind of wish I regret having having
wasted my second guess on a Star Wars title. So'm just gonna throw this in here. You know, I don't really believe it's in the top 10. I'm gonna say starski and Hutch
That movie as you know, I
think it's got plenty of laughs and interesting performances in it and stuff, but
What a swing and a miss in terms of thinking that anyone?
Being hutch like they wanted to see a new starsky and hutch
They could have their character names could have been anything
No, they'll just play the kinds of characters that they'd normally play Owen Wilson was laid back and Ben Stiller was uptight
Which wasn't even the original I don't even know if Starsky and Hutch really had those particular vibes to begin with
But anyway, it's not on the list well, it's a Snoop Dog in that yeah, please huggy bear. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's amazing. Yeah
It kind of stick with the cast they had in that movie it kind of just feels like they'd
Expanded that rumble scene from Anchorman into a
That's a good call
Actually damaged the legacy of that movie if it had been an original I think it might
Larger in people's kids. I remember being funny
Think it might be loom larger in people's kids. I remember being funny
Yeah, I think it would have it would have sold more tickets I think if it wasn't based on something nobody
Okay, how about along came starski
Okay, how about along came starsky
So sorry about that Connor, but
Now Patrick you have the opportunity here to named the top three on the list I know it's pretty exciting
This sucks. It sucks that it's even an opportunity
It's game is this game is so funny in that I've had a few times where one contestant will just happen to
While having two turns every time, still
manage to bang out the top three. And that guest was named Edgar Wright.
But uh-
Oh wow. I mean, it was-
I was astonished when Connor with first guest didn't go with Star Wars.
It felt very obvious.
And then I was hoping it would last long enough to make it to me. And then same with JJ. But
yeah, this is- Patrick's in the prime position now which ones are taken Doug which ones
have already been named as far as numbers oh my god I meant which ones on
the list right yeah yeah but two got taken to Connor. I think no one is like Star Wars movie that
wasn't in the top 10. Okay. I think this this will either be very high or very low. But
I think because it's the most recent Star Wars movie Star Wars Episode nine the rise
of Skywalker. I mean that's a reasonable guess. And you came so close to the hat trick. It's the disappointing that it almost feels like a larger loss. Yeah, yeah, I'd agree. That's true. Thank you. It's true. It's true.
It's it's I think I think the other two players are going to a little
have a little bit more dignity at this point, Patrick.
OK, great. Great.
No, no, no, that's fine. That's fine.
But you never know.
I mean, just like the Olympics, there could be, you know,
one one minute time period at the end of this for you to go tell
the judges you thought it was unfair.
Uh huh.
Uh huh.
You don't make it within a minute.
We won't.
It won't count.
All right.
Let's let Griffin have one more guess.
See if you can pop that number three on the list of the 10 top movies with the word star
in the title.
Look, I mean, at this this point I feel like I got
nothing to lose so I might as well swing big I I wonder if Star Trek to the wrath
of Khan oh wow like the most popular Star Trek film in most people's eyes
or most well liked at the very least. Yeah.
Great guess. Oh, no. Great.
Out of the box.
Oh, no.
It turned out that that movie is number 12 on the list.
Wow. Yeah, didn't quite make it.
But number 11 on the list,
interestingly enough, Star Trek, colon, the motion picture.
Huh? Yeah.
But that also wasn't worth any points.
And that was number three.
Well, can I guess, can I guess?
I don't usually just get to guess again. OK, OK, OK. the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the the But that's a fun concept. Don't don't call him chicken. He has a myemic flying syndrome.
No. All right.
I'm just going to tell you number nine on the list.
I'm just going to tell you the ones that didn't get said so far.
Nine is episode two.
Attack of the Clowns.
Uh, uh, uh, number eight was Empire Strikes Back.
Six is Force Awakens.
And number three on the list of movies with star in the title, you're all gonna kick yourselves.
Star Trek Beyond.
Wow.
Can I tell you something?
Please. That was what I was going to get I'm sure it was bad it
wasn't you could have doubled your points you could have really won this thing instead
of this what this minor win you have here feels like a dirty win you'd have met all
your points you would have really if you next Yeah. And there will be a next time because you are, you are now a returning champion
who gets to come back soon, but everybody gets to promote themselves after you promote
yourself, Patrick. What would you like to promote?
Sure. I mean, you can watch the George Lucas talk show. We have a YouTube channel. All
of our shows have been on there since 2020.
It's almost 100 episodes.
But we've had insane, you know, Whoopi Goldberg's been on,
Seth Meyers has been on, and Rachel Zegler's
been on seven times.
It's a very silly, very fun show.
I recommend finding a guest that you like
and watching that episode, because that's an easy way in.
You can also watch the documentary
that we talked about, I'm George Lucas, A Connor Ratliff story. It's on Amazon and Apple right now, or you
can go to I'mGeorgeLucas.com. Instagram as we said, Connor. Oh, and recently in LA at
the ISD typewriter, we did, I did with a bunch of people out here, live readings of Star
Wars episode one, the Phantom Menace and episode two, Attack of the Clones, and Haley Jalosman was Anakin and Tony Hale was there
and Lorraine Newman, really a bunch of insane people.
And those are on the George Lucas talk show YouTube channels.
So you can go watch those.
How do they like is there a lot of laughs during it?
Because like there are a lot of laughs.
Do it really straight and it gets laughs or do they find ways to make it funnier?
It sort of depended on the actor.
Some of them took it really straight and then some of them would would
be a little looser with the script, but they were both really fun.
I have no idea if Revenge of the Sith will be funny.
I don't think it will be.
But that's happening November 16th.
You can stream it or if you're in LA,
you can come to the dynasty typewriter and watch it there.
Is that the one that is that the one that has the most like, like, uh,
talk about like taxation and stuff?
I think that's probably episode one, right? Yeah.
Phantom Highness is the most tax forward. I would say. Yeah.
Render the Sith is the most lava
I think that's the most
The most lava and also the most like medical
problems because you've got like breathing disorders
and broken hearts
Yeah
It's the most medically sad
Aww
Alright
Okay so Connor
Radliff, what would you like to promote? I think Patrick said it all
Well, that leaves me with open slots to promote other things
So I'll go ahead mention my podcast tiny dinos
Which is a an improvised sitcom and slash talk show with starring me and James the third
As two best friends who are scientists who have secretly brought back dinosaurs
But in order to be safe, we've made them very tiny
Love it and
You could be reached on what's your it's you're just your actual name on
On Instagram or Twitter or whatever
Well, thank you for being here. I I hope you had a lot of fun Instagram or Twitter or whatever Well, thank you for being here. I hope you had a good time despite right away. I had a great time
Well, I won the first game so that feels like that's really where I think the real winning happened
Yeah, I think between the you know, what people like to cling to that, but you know, it's it's just a warm-up game
Connor won the first game. I won the second game,
and I think we should feel really good about that.
Yeah.
Oh no, Griffin, Dubin.
Well, I just wanna plug, of course,
the Doug Love movies back catalog,
where you can go back and see
that I won 12 guests of Christmas twice.
And not that, I mean, who's keeping track?
We all have had our different wins at different times.
But I co-host a movie podcast,
Blank Check with Griffin and David,
with David Sims from The Atlantic.
We go through director filmographies
and we're just starting the whole,
the rest of the year will be David Lynch,
both his movies and Twin Peaks all being covered.
So have you started? Are there episodes already about Lynch?
Eraserhead has come out at the time we're recording this.
So the series just started and we'll be running chronologically through the fall.
But we've recorded almost all of them at this point.
Right on. I mean, it's a fun filmmaker to talk about
them all like in a row, because because yes, there's certain things that are in most of his movies,
but he's got some real outliers that just pop up and you're just like,
what a guy riding a lawnmower. What?
You know, and again, maybe maybe the great American lawnmower movie.
No, watching them all in order and kind of living
in his head space for an extended period of time,
it does sort of some of the things that feel a little more
out of left field, I kind of,
I don't want to say understand a little more,
but I start to see the connections, if that makes sense.
It's kind of the fun part of doing the show in this way,
the format we have.
I'd say like when you watch Elephant Man sandwiched between whatever he did
right before and whatever he did right after.
Yeah.
That's, that's just a real, that's just a real interesting, I can't even call it
speed bump because it's one of his best movies.
Is it Eraserhead and then Blue Velvet after?
No, it's his first three movies are Eraserhead,
then Elephant Man, then Dune, which is wild.
It's kind of like a microcosm of the whole career.
Then you got that Mel Brooks looked at Eraserhead and said,
yeah, you could tell this straightforward sad story
about this guy and have empathy for him.
It's wild.
And then, yeah.
And then I think that movie's fantastic but it's even
wilder that Dino De Laurentiis watched uh uh Elephant Man and said you should direct the next
Star Wars. I mean first George Lucas literally offered him Return of the Jedi and he turned that
down to do Dune that his trajectory was so huge so quick and then after the failure of Dune he
really was like I'm just doing David Lynch movies my way and then after the failure of Dune, he really was like,
I'm just doing David Lynch movies my way, my size for the rest of my career.
It's also interesting to note, interesting to note that David Lynch's Disney movie, The
Straight Story, is nowhere near as disturbing as Walter Murch's Disney's Return to Ox.
Yeah, I mean, it's just kindly Richard Farnsworth just tooling around.
That's true.
All right. There's no, there's no ears, no ears to be found in that one.
Okay, so I should do some plugs.
The Doug Benson movie Interruption is back as it is every first Tuesday of the month at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles.
This Tuesday, September 3rd, and then we're having the big anniversary Douglas Movies show at the
Improv Lab in Hollywood on September 17th. So if you're in the LA area, please come out to that and celebrate with us. All of my dates and dates and links are at douglasmovies.com.
Thank you to all three of my guests today from their joint project,
the George Lucas talk show.
I end every episode with the last line of emotion picture,
I say as always, and then the genuine
last line from different movies.
I'm shocked I haven't done this one yet because it's Star Wars, the new hope one for 1977.
Always Star Wars one in my heart, but do any of you know the last line of that movie?
I'm trying to think what does the whole final scene plays out without dialogue
So it must be right before that the ceremony where they get their medals
It's it like where the ceremony is it is it like see through PO saying like take care of him
Won't you or something when our two gets off?
It's I'll give you another hint. It's Luke Skywalker says it Is it like C3PO saying, like, take care of him? Won't you or something when R2 gets off?
It's I'll give you another hint. It's Luke Skywalker says it.
Is it literally just like Luke saying we did it?
No.
All right. I got to wrap it up, so I'll just say it.
Thanks again, guys.
As always, he'll be all right.
Wow.
