Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as it pop or kernels in his teeth They're still not one that he won't see Cause Doug loves movies Hey, hey, hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug movies recording on Sunday afternoon September 1st 2024 and my guests today are Ricky Lin home Matt O'Brien and Austin Peters hello How's it going chumps I mean champs of course Let's meet everybody individually and alphabetically Let's meet everybody individually and alphabetically by first name. He is a returning champion whose film Skincare is in
Starting point is 00:00:51 select theaters now and available to view at home soon as well. It's Austin Peters. Hello, Austin. Hi, Doug. How's it going? Good. I'm happy to be back returning as a champion to your show. Yeah, usually when somebody comes on to plug a specific film, they're not that interested in coming back right away. So I appreciate you doing that.
Starting point is 00:01:16 But also, the timing is not too terrible because we can promote the fact that skincare is going to be on VOD soon, right? Yeah, it's going to be on VOD soon, right? Yeah, it's going to be available for purchase and rental on all digital platforms on the 3rd, so on September 3rd. Oh, okay. So that's very soon. That's people are listening to this on the day it comes out, Labor Day.
Starting point is 00:01:40 It'll be available the very next day. And is it too soon to start talking about what your next project will be? Yeah, I don't. I think that I'm too superstitious to sort of talk about any other movie that I might be working on. But, you know, I'm still I mean, this is I'm still doing skincare stuff. Sort of we're screening tonight at the DGA and then I'm going to New York next week to do a few more screenings. And then it will be, oh man, and I just remembered now, just by talking about this, that I forgot to record
Starting point is 00:02:14 my director's commentary for the Blu-ray today. So maybe I'll do that after I'm done with this show. That takes a minute, because you have to sit there and talk through the whole movie. I guess so, I guess so. I don't know. I've never done it before. And I also don't know what I'm going to say. But I don't think anyone edits it. I think I just recorded and then I think they just print it. So hopefully I don't say anything crazy. I know a lot of people will have a close, confident or friend and talk to them like a conversation more than just you having to, you know what I mean? Oh, that's a good idea. Yeah. That's an interesting idea. Like your DP or something and they can be like, remember this day? Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Yeah, that's a good idea, boy. I would, yeah. He's a talkative guy. Talking just on your own for the whole time. You may tap at some point, like I don't have that much to say. I think definitely. That's what I'm thinking. I'm like, I don't really have much to say about this anyway. So I'd be like, just keep listening, everybody. I'm going to go to the kitchen and grab a snack. I've seen the film thousands of times.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Well, all right. So good luck with that and good luck today. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian.
Starting point is 00:03:31 I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. Very excited to keep my streak alive. My hot, hot one streak. Well, thank you for taking the time to do this during Labor Day weekend. I'm sure you're probably had to step away from a barbecue or something.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Yeah. You know, as Canadians, we're always drilling and drunk as hell. So you caught me mid drunk. Is there a there's no Labor Day in Canada. Yes, there is same day. Yeah, man There's so much that Americans don't know about Canada. It's really fun I told an American the other day that Canada didn't have microwaves and they believed me That's how insane I Mean there are some wild differences, though. So like that's how you know, you can trick people like that.
Starting point is 00:04:28 But who had Labor Day first, the US or Canada? Like whose idea was it? Oh, I mean, Americans probably going to take it. They take everything. Well, I like how your Christmas is the day later on a different name. I think that's the way you box. You mean Boxing Day? I do. Oh, I love Boxing Day.
Starting point is 00:04:47 I miss it. What do you do? Just put raging bowl on a loop. Yeah. Pretty in the box, your friends and family and beat the crap out of each other and stuff in boxes. I love it. Well, thank you dude for being here.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And joining us as well is a very frequent guest on the show since the very beginning. And her name is Ricky Lindholm. Hey, Ricky. Hi, how are you? I'm good. But you, on the other hand, seem very busy lately. Yeah, I've been very busy. I was just in Edinburgh for a month doing the Fringe. And have you done fringe? I never have because that sentence you just said that you were there for a month Well, I decided to make it super easy on myself and bring my two-year-old. Yeah, I was doing two musicals a day And I had my two-year-old so I was very busy
Starting point is 00:05:41 Yeah, I you know, I saw Your posts about it and it just seemed crazy. And then, but you're already back home with a new music video out for one of your, your one of your more recent songs. Yeah, we filmed it before I left. But then, okay, I got it together when I was gone. But yeah, middle aged love, which is about like, you know, when you get older and having sex, you have all these ailments that you have to account for. It's about that. But how it's still just as sexy. Everyone's got like bursitis or like there, you know, this doesn't work or whatever it is. I saw the short version on uh on your Instagram is very funny.
Starting point is 00:06:22 And check out the full video when I have three minutes. Yes It's so silly and funny And also great timing For you to be back in the States because you have a movie in theaters right now. Yes afraid Oh, I thought it was pronounced afraid. Oh Maybe you're right us afraid. Oh, I thought it was pronounced afraid. Oh, maybe you're right. I should have asked. I should have. A fried. A fried. It's like that. It's like a cockney accent, afraid. But I want to know more about afraid. Tell us about it, Stud.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Well, it's this family who has this Alexa type device in their house. And then it starts to sort of take over their lives and because it's AI they don't know What's what everything's kind of a mirage and everything that you think is one thing isn't and yeah everything their whole lives Start to go insane. Are you the voice of the AI? Nope, I can't say who I am because it is. Oh, I know when When I asked the policy people I was like, how do I talk about my role? And they're like, well, just say you can't say what you are. I'm like, okay, because it is a surprise. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:31 You think I'm one thing, but I'm probably not that. Oh, that's fantastic. Yeah. But it actually stars John Cho. Yes. Yeah, he's great. Oh, he's awesome. I loved working with him.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I loved working with all those people. They were great. Oh, he's awesome. I loved working with him. I loved working with all those people. They were great Well, I hope you love competing with the people that are gathered over the zoom today but before the segway Today I'd like each of you to recommend one movie could be any movie Just something you stand behind. Start with you, Austin. Hmm, I should have thought about this
Starting point is 00:08:12 because I knew I was gonna be first and you also told us that we were gonna do this. But I didn't. So- Do I go third? No, no, no, something I'm just gonna wing it. Something that I watched this week, which I loved, was The Doom Generation, the Gregorocky movie.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Oh, okay. And it's his, he recut it, I think. And so now I think he's scrubbed the original release. And so now it's his intended edit, and it's only 89 minutes. But it was really, I really enjoyed watching it. And I was, I had a great time sort of watching the beginning, which is sort of, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:57 like a teenage movie or something, like teenage natural born killers. It's very stylish and then, and very like funny. And then at the end it becomes absolutely horrific in the last 10 minutes or something and then when it's over you kind of with ends and you're kind of like what was it what did that mean um and it was it was uh it's a it was a great viewing experience at home so i recommend anyone to try it out Where did you, were we able to access it? I think it's on Criterion Channel,
Starting point is 00:09:30 Okay. which is where I think I want, but I might've branded it anyway, because I wanted to make sure, but I think on Criterion Channel, they have his cut. And I had never seen it before, so it was a first time watch. Let me ask you this, Austin,
Starting point is 00:09:42 as a filmmaker, where do you stand on, what's your interest level on the now over three hour? Three hour forty two minute version of Ridley Scott's Napoleon. I'm interested. Yeah, it's on Apple TV now people. You know, I wasn't interested when it was a two-hour movie. Now that it's longer, I'm strangely more interested just because this whole director's cut thing is so interesting to me. Now, it feels like a lot of directors are making movies shorter than they want them to be just because the studios are insisting on it,
Starting point is 00:10:21 and then they eventually make a director's cut. Yeah, a four-hour cut is totally crazy. It's completely insane. But I also like it. Sometimes I just watch The Irishman on Netflix or something, which is like three and a half hours. Both of these guys, Scorsese and Ridley Scott, why not just get into the mini-series or limited series game,
Starting point is 00:10:44 instead of making us see these things in a giant chunk like that. In the score says he have one, he had that Boardwalk Empire, right? He did, yeah. I assume he directed some, but not all of the episodes. He did the first one, yeah. He did the first one. Yeah, but Irishmen, as it is, I treated it like I watched it in an hour long installments.
Starting point is 00:11:06 I just made it into a series on my own because it just came out on Netflix. But if you're just going to come out of Netflix and not have it theatrical, why not just make an eight-hour thing and really get everything you want in there? Yeah. All right. We got to move on to Matt and his recommendation. and really get everything you want in there. Yeah. All right, we got to move on to Matt and his recommendation. Yes, also, am I the only guest
Starting point is 00:11:33 that doesn't have a movie in theaters right now? I just realized. Can we book me with more career equivalent people, please? Yeah, no movie in theater for me, but I'll recommend the last movie I saw. I made a huge mistake the other day and I watched Saltburn really high late at night and it was a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:11:59 I heard a lot about this movie and it's not a good 10 milligram movie to watch. So you're recommending it but you think in this particular case you watched it wrong? Yes, I want someone else to experience what I experienced I think. Well you know I see most movies high and I was I feel like I was a level of disturbed by salt burn that I would be not high. Yeah. Because I certainly have thought about it since in moments where I'm not high. And just to you know, it's an interesting movie, but always a little bit too much.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Every part that I wasn't interested in went on for a little too long. Yeah. Yeah. I heard about the grave scene and it's not. I mean, when you finally see it, you're like, I was like clutching pearls. I wasn't wearing, I was like, I caught myself clutching invisible pearls. I love cell burns so much. I love how I loved the like non-needed nudity at the end. It was just so, so gratuitous for no reason. And I thought the penis dance. Yeah. When there's no one, it could absolutely be cut. And you're like, no, we just want to put a penis on there. I'm like all for it.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Yeah. And he's single, right? So he was putting out a message to the world like, you know, next thing you know, he's dating Sabrina Carpenter. Yeah, it worked. You know, no surprises for her there. Yeah. You know, that's the thing is like when you hear, oh, he, you know, basically makes out with makes love to dirt. Hearing that, it sounds like it's going to be really nasty,
Starting point is 00:13:37 but somehow he manages to make it almost seem romantic, not quite. But that's also something we do on Canadian Christmas. So that's I think why I was so comfortable with it. All right, Ricky, what's your recommendation today? OK, so when I was in Scotland, I was basically sick the whole time. And I always like just like I pick a genre and stick with it. And I just make myself lay in bed.
Starting point is 00:14:05 And I was watching 80s thrillers and I got recommended, you know, by the algorithm, a thriller I'd never seen before. And it was it's called Jagged Edge. Have you seen this? I'd never seen it before. And I loved it. It was Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges being super sexy. And it was like a perfect thing to watch when you have the flu. Yeah. And and character actor Robert Loggia. Yes. And Peter Coyote.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Yeah. Who, you know, Loggia, like, you know, he's always really good, but he's, you know, never has that juicy of a role. So it was nice to see that. And yeah, the only thing I don't like about it is the constant references to a serrated edge knife because I hate knife stuff. Oh Yeah, well then you might not like jagged edge But well, you know, it's not like a movie where there's tons of you know We have to see people getting stabbed, but they sure do talk about knives a little bit
Starting point is 00:15:00 That just popped right into my head as soon as you mentioned it But well those are three interesting recommendations and we'll see if anybody takes you up on it then reaches out to me to complain but I think I think the people have a good time. They check those movies out and When we come back from the break Things are gonna get ugly in a good way. We are back. Let the ugliness begin.
Starting point is 00:15:34 You're no longer friends. You are competitors and our first of two games today is something that I call the little search engine that could. I don't know if any of you have played this game before, so I'll walk you through it. I typed a word into the IMDB search engine this very morning, and then I wrote down the top 10 movies that have this word in the title.
Starting point is 00:16:00 This isn't based on box office or reviews. It's purely on popularity according to the IMDB algorithm. So I'm going to ask you each to take turns guessing movie titles that have the word of today in the title. And if you're if it's in the top 10, you'll get points. If it's number one, you'll get 10 points. If it's number 10, you get one point. And all those points in between, you'll each ultimately get three guesses. Taking turns, starting with Austin, then Matt, then Ricky. And then after you've each had three guesses, we'll add up the totals, see who's our winner. Since it's Labor Day weekend, both in the United States and Canada, possibly some other places, the word today is day.
Starting point is 00:16:53 There's an insane amount of movies that have the word day in the title, and your job is to figure out which ones you think might be very popular or searched for today. Austin, what's your first guess? My first guess. And we can tie in the word day, we that includes day plural, right? I know it's just straight up. Just da y. Yeah. That was a great question. That was a great question. And I don't know if maybe there are maybe further down the list, there were some with the S but the top 10 that I wrote down, none of them are plural. Wow. Okay. Wow. And so we'll do, you guessed correct, which is that I hadn't played this game before,
Starting point is 00:17:50 but I was, so we're gonna go, I'll do it. I'll do, you get to go first. So you can snag number one right now. Oh my God. It's a huge opportunity. Yeah. For me, I'm gonna go with Valentine's Day. The movie that absolutely does have the word day in the title,
Starting point is 00:18:12 but did not crack the top 10 rats. I know. I mean, for Taylor Swift's phenomenal work in that film alone, people should be. Yeah, should be looking it up. Yeah, wow, thanks for reminding me about that. That makes me feel like it was a good guess. I had forgotten that she was in that picture.
Starting point is 00:18:36 I try to make everybody feel as good as they can about their guesses and there's no reason why that movie couldn't have been in the top 10, it just isn't. Matt? Okay, yeah, if this one's not number one, I will literally eat my hat. Number one- What kind of hat is it? And is it ready?
Starting point is 00:18:56 Do you have to put seasoning on it first? In my hand, it's been boiling, it's soft, it's, I can make it happen at any moment. Soft boiled hats, just like we do in Canada. That's the last time I say that joke. I, it's gotta be training day. It has to be. It has to be training day.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Do I have to lie to you and say that it is when it isn't? Yes. Well, let me give you the correct answer whistle because it is in the top 10. But not number one. And I don't think you'll be too shocked when you hear what came in above training day, but training day is number four on the list. So that's where seven points for math is a strong start. Now we go to Ricky Independence Day.
Starting point is 00:19:49 As a matter of fact, it's number three on the list. Wow. Probably because people are endlessly fascinated by Dennis. I mean, Randy Quaid. Remember when Randy Quaid was like the hilarious comic relief in that massive blockbuster that's still watched by everybody every 4th of July. I don't know what happened to that guy. All right. He's got a Christmas movie, Christmas and 4th of July.
Starting point is 00:20:21 I know that guy's you see him twice a year and nobody likes him anymore. Yeah. OK, so Ricky gets eight points and jumps into the lead. But anybody could win at this point. So Austin. See if you can hit me with that number one movie with day in the title. I don't know. I'm I'm really I think I prefer the multiple choice questions because this is just too vast. It is vast, but you have thought of others.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Yeah, that have day in there. At least you could think of one. Yes, I could think of one. What about the recent film? Happy Death Day. I love that as a guess. And again, to back up your guessing abilities, it did recently come out recently enough that people could be searching for it. But unfortunately, it is not on the list. Unfortunately, it is not on the list. Right. But the game is still not out of your reach. If Matt and Ricky fail to put more points on the board, Matt.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Okay. What's your next guess is not number one. I will eat a second hat. Uh, it has to be. Groundhog day. Groundhog day is crazy because I I that's one of the first ones that popped in my head when I thought, let's see what movies with day in the title are popular right now. And it finished at number 11.
Starting point is 00:21:57 No, my God, that was my next guess. Yeah, I even wrote it down just because I was so, so shocked. That's crazy. Ricky, I even wrote it down just because I was so, so shocked. That's crazy. Ricky, I know you see a lot of Broadway. Did you see the musical of Groundhog Day? Yes, I loved it. It's excellent, right? I loved it. But I saw after Andy Carl broke his leg.
Starting point is 00:22:15 So he had like a big cast on and still had to. He still performed the role. It was amazing. Oh, that's wild. And then they revived it on the West End recently. And it's a smash there as well. I'm not surprised. It's wild. And then they revived it on the West end recently. And it's a smash there as well. Oh, I'm not surprised. It's so, yeah. Uh, I would see that one again, if I could, you know, just kind of shocking because it just seems like they'd make a very obvious, you know, it could be so
Starting point is 00:22:36 obvious because it's already such a good story that people like, but to just write a bunch of songs and have them be that that and I loved it. I Love it. Okay, so no points for mad on that one, but Ricky got a little help there. She knows not to say groundhog day I'm gonna go with night and day. Oh, I was gonna say that too night day the Cameron Diaz she got out of the business because of it.
Starting point is 00:23:08 She didn't really, she did a bunch of movies after that. That's a good guy. I also heard she's coming out of retirement and she's gonna make a movie. I heard that too. Yeah, so good for her. But unfortunately, night and day did not pack the top 10. So as predicted, Austin,
Starting point is 00:23:29 or at least mentioned Matt and Ricky both added no more points. So if you can come up with the second most popular movie with day in the title or the top one, then you will have more points than them in a shot at winning this thing. Wow. God, Doug, I gotta tell you when you threw the when you took the plural the plural day out of it, it really really threw me for a loop. You're just sitting over there days of thunder, days of wine and roses, days of... All of them, days of All of them, every single one.
Starting point is 00:24:05 So I don't think well, yeah, I'm not sure this is in the top 10, but to to honor to honor the day to honor the holiday. I'm going to say Jason Reitman's film Labor Day. It's not on the list. I'm just going to say that but I'm so glad you brought up Labor Day. It's not on the list. I'm just going to say that. But I'm so glad you brought up Labor Day because obviously the game was hinged to that. And also a lot of times that my guests, when I play a game like this, they won't they won't put the connection together. Well, he said Labor Day, you know, they just don't think that might be on the list.
Starting point is 00:24:42 Because why would I give it away? And the answer is, well, I would give it away if might be on the list is why would I give it away and the answer is well, I would give it away If it was on the list, so it was again a very very smart guess just unfortunately a extremely underwhelming movie and The craziest part to me about that that movie and jason wrightman is I saw him He's making an appearance or something was happening somewhere, you know where they put in parentheses Something that you've done something that you're in or have done and for him. It's a director Jason Reitman Labor Day Formerly Twitter and I had to respond I had to be like, oh you mean the director of this this all these big movies
Starting point is 00:25:20 He's made Extremely popular movies and the person chose Labor Day is the example of something he's directed, extremely popular movies. And the person chose Labor Day as the example of something he's directed. It seemed like a pointed choice. Yeah, it seems like an odd choice for sure. Yeah, and I didn't read it this weekend. If it was this weekend, I get it. Okay, it is Labor Day weekend.
Starting point is 00:25:39 And people really, he really tried to step in and give us a movie we can watch every Labor Day weekend, but that would just be ridiculous All right, so I'm sorry Austin but you didn't get any points in this game But that's all right come back strong on the next one. You get a participation trophy for sure Matt Okay, this one's good. What have you thought of? Here's what I thought of. I Day of the Dead. That is a terrific guess, especially because, you know, at least in this country, Halloween now starts mid August.
Starting point is 00:26:21 So anything scary is going to get some action on the IMDB. Day of the Dead is number eight, which gives you an additional three points. And now you are in the lead. Ricky just has to come up with something worth two or more points. I'm going to say Independence Day two. Oh, aren't you clever. Exactly. It's got some subtitle on there, I believe. Resurgence? Oh, yeah. Is that it? Is it? Is it? Is it? Wait, no, no, it's not. What is it? I think so.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Resurgence or resurrection? It's like that. It's resurgence. Okay, I'll say one fine day. No, I don't know this one. I'll say one fine day. I don't know this one. I'll say one fine day. One fine resurgence. One fine day did not make the list. Neither did the sequel to Independence Day. What was number one? Matt, you are the winner of this game. Wouldn't it be funny, Ricky, if I set this whole thing up and then never told anybody what the answers were? It would be like if Steve Harvey went to commercial
Starting point is 00:27:25 on Family Feud and you didn't get to find out what number six was. Number 10 is Sicario Day of Soldado. Wow. Yeah, we're gonna get that. I wasn't expecting anyone to pull that one out. Number nine, zombie movie from a couple of years ago that was on Netflix starring Jamie Foxx called Day Shift. Oh, wait. That I've heard good things about, but I've never explored it. Then of course, eight was Day of the Dead.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Seven, The Day After Tomorrow. Yes. The disaster film with Jake Gyllenhaal. It was not a disaster, It's a big hit. Number six, Ferris Bueller's Day. No, we should have gotten right there. I'm mad at myself. Yeah, that's one where you have to go find the kicking machine and spin the wheel.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Boy, you were close, Ricky, with one fine day because there's a movie that came out a couple years ago with Anne Hathaway I think called one day. Oh right one day Then we had training day at four in the Penn State three now Here's where it gets interesting because the next two the top two are very very big movies Here's where it gets interesting because the next two, the top two are very, very big movies, but I think you only kick yourselves on one of them because the other one, I just don't even think of it. The subtitle,
Starting point is 00:28:58 they're both have the word day in the subtitle. Number two is Terminator two. Oh my God. Right. Kicking. Kicking. I'm not kicking myself for that one. That's a real kicker. But this next one, I don't blame anybody for not thinking of it, but it makes perfect sense.
Starting point is 00:29:13 A Quiet Place, day one. Oh, wow. That just came out. Yes. Very pop. People love it. And I- Anything after a colon, I'm not responsible for.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Yeah. I tend to agree. Pop people love it and I Anything after a colon I'm not responsible for yeah I tend to agree Said the man who shit in the street, okay Pass my colon is none of my business So Matt wins that one but as Matt probably knows And the listeners certainly do all you win is the opportunity to go first in our next game Which may or may not be an advantage and we will find out After these messages will be right back We are back and Matt gets to go first in a game that I know
Starting point is 00:30:02 Austin you've played before it's called you can't handle the truth In this game I say a fact and The person whose turn it is has to guess if that fact is The truth or if it's false. So your options in answering are truth or false. I got 10 of these babies. So each of you will get three of them plus Austin. Congratulations, since you're the winner,
Starting point is 00:30:42 you'll get one extra one to try to win this thing. Ultimately, we switched the order around from the last game, so it'll go from Matt to Austin to Ricky and Matt, you're up first. Are you ready? You said it's a fact. Well, you know, it's a, it's a statement. Fun. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:06 But you know, the fun statement isn't fun to say, but fun fact is. So these are fun facts that may or may not be true. Oh, OK. Yeah. Sorry. Yeah, it's confusing the way I worded it, but that's part of the fun. All right, Matt. Let's do it. Tell me if this is the truth or false. George Lucas's first draft of Star Wars was called Battle Planets. I mean.
Starting point is 00:31:38 That sounds accurate. I'm going to say that's false. You're going to go against what you say with your answer. Sounds accurate. Yeah, exactly. Sounds very true. So it's got to be false. Yeah. The George Costanza don't go opposite of your gut. Yeah. Yeah. It's what you're doing here. And yeah, that was completely made up. Yes
Starting point is 00:32:08 Matt's on the board got the first one, right? Austin I think you walked away with the whole game last time because of how many of these you got, right? The last time you were on so let's see how you do with this one The title character in the film, babe was played by a dozen pigs. Is that truth or false? I Hmm, this is tough. I tend to think that the pig and babe was a robot. You mean CGI or they had a physically, they made a pig robot. I think they had a pig robot.
Starting point is 00:32:51 I guess George Miller didn't direct the first babe. He only did pig in the city. I know. I recently got corrected on that because I was commenting on the wild difference between the two films and somebody was like, well, he didn't direct the first one. I think that's not corrected on that because I was commenting on the wild difference between the two films and so it was only didn't direct the first one. And I had to just be like, but he produced it, which, you know, it's not a great argument. Wait, are you also saying that 12 pigs died during this movie?
Starting point is 00:33:17 Oh, you're thinking that that took so many of them because they were running away. Right. I think, you know, if I'm going to be honest with you, I'll tell you after we hear Austin against. I was eagerly waiting. I was just going to. Yeah, it was going to help you too much. I think I know I gotta stop playing. I think.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Hmm. Can you give me? Can I ask you what year babe was came out? Is that possible? I could if I had taken the trouble to write it down, but I think it was 90s? I think it was. I am going to say yes, it was true.
Starting point is 00:33:59 It was 12 pigs for Babe or whatever the number was you said. Yeah, I said a dozen. But in fact, and this is like this is why these can be tricky. It wasn't a dozen pigs. It was forty eight pigs. What played the role of babe. And it's because pigs just they age out too quickly. You know, even within a few days, they seem older. And it's because pigs just they age out too quickly.
Starting point is 00:34:29 Even within a few days, they seem older. Wow. Yeah. So they had to be constantly bringing in new new babes. But the the heartwarming story behind that movie is that the guy that played the farmer, James Cromwell, he not only stopped eating meat after making that movie, but he has his own pet pig. Oh, yeah, it's adorable when you find something like that doing research for a movie trivia game. So sorry, Austin, but I'll be back to you in a moment. We'll go to Ricky now and
Starting point is 00:35:07 Your fun statement Is the blood in the shower scene in psycho was actually molasses I'll say yes Very very speedy answer. Oh, sorry. Just came right out with it. I'm not asking you to take your time. I just... I'll say yes.
Starting point is 00:35:32 Didn't they make it with caro syrup back there? Isn't that the same thing? It's some kind of syrup, right? Well, I don't know. I'll just say yes. What was it? Well, you're wrong. Yeah, the answer is it was a false one. And, you know, it was made
Starting point is 00:35:48 semi famously, I don't know if everybody knows this trivia, but it was chocolate syrup. Because, you know, it's filmed in black and white. So, you know, I guess hitch just like the, you know, the thickness of it. Love to bleed chocolate syrup. It definitely doesn't look like chocolate syrup. I mean, it'd be so much tastier. It'd be easier to just lick your own wounds if it was chocolate. But I was a tour guide briefly at Universal Studios, and that was one of the pieces of information you'd throw out when
Starting point is 00:36:24 the tram would break down in front of the psycho house, you have to say something. And because that's how it doesn't work that way anymore. Now they have video of Jimmy Fallon talking through the whole tram tour. But back when I did it, the tram tour was like 90 minutes long. And you the the tour guide was not allowed to you had to talk the whole time. You couldn't just sit and be like, well, you know, I'll just let everybody just look at the situation. You know, you have to talk and then the trams are going to break down. And so during the time when they're either trying to fix the tram you're in or bring a new tram to swap everybody into,
Starting point is 00:36:59 you would have to just talk. You just have to filibuster about wherever in the park you happen to be. So I just have a lot of random facts about some, you know, just very, very specific movies because of that. My friend got married at the psycho house and we had to watch it from the tram. This is true. And then the tram broke down after that and we were just like on this hill. And it's better to have a filibuster because we just had jimmy thon they played what they could play and then we just all sat there like freezing on a hill hoping to get to the reception yeah you were going you were going up
Starting point is 00:37:33 the hill to turn a corner and go through the big foot tunnel yeah and then we were just kind of stuck there for a minute and a half or something. It is the weirdest experience being stuck for long periods of time at something in an amusement park. Especially when we could just totally get out. It was very strange. Right. But walk to where, you know, like, you know, the walking tour of the whole back lot. Plus, it's wild how the back lot at Universal, like you start up on top of the hill and then it's all down below so you'd also have to walk up a big hill to
Starting point is 00:38:11 get back but More reminiscing about Universal Studios tour on my other podcast It's called my my five weeks in hell. All right. I'd like to come on that one. I have a lot to say. I don't know if I would. I must have worked there longer than five weeks, but I really got hired before the busy Christmas season because they hire a lot of people then. And then I was not a tour guide anymore by summer.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Okay. So the next one for Austin. Was not a tour night anymore by summer. Okay, so The next one for Austin only Matt is on the board So you need this one Austin? Okay Tom Cruise made his film debut in endless love You think of that statement. Hmm. I don't think it's right. I don't think it's right.
Starting point is 00:39:15 But also, yeah, it could be there's a chance I'm going to say, no, it's not right. They're saying that it's false. I'm saying that it's false. It's the truth. Oh, man. Can't handle it. It's the outsiders. No, in fact, I think before outsiders was losing it and taps. Oh, yeah. It was way off.
Starting point is 00:39:38 Yeah, he was like a flunky to Sean and the Military Academy and taps. And then he was like a flunky to Sean and in the military academy and in taps, which I remember thinking was a really good movie at the time, but I haven't revisited it. OK, so Matt, yeah, there's your chance to tear into the lead.
Starting point is 00:40:04 True or false? OK. Nick Cage once owned a pet octopus named Cool. I mean, of course he would. But there's a thing. Are you screwing me on the name of the octopus is what I'm wondering. Oh. Oh, he could have had a pet chinchilla with that name. I think he's had a pet everything. This could have been somebody else. This could have been John Stamos. Because didn't he go bankrupt or something? Because he like owned a castle
Starting point is 00:40:36 and a dinosaur skeleton. And like, I feel like he had a charquet took half of his fortune. Yeah, half of his castle. I got to that's how. Yeah, half of his castle or something. I got to say that's yeah, that's true. I that has to be true. And it is true. Yes. It is true. Yes, it's the truth. He had a pet octopus called cool in the 80s and.
Starting point is 00:41:03 I'm not sure what that's why I put it all in the 80s. And I'm not sure what, that's why I put it all in the past. Cause I'm not sure if he still does or if Cool is still with us. Yeah, I don't know how long we live for, but. It's true. That's a fantastic fact that I'm glad I've learned.
Starting point is 00:41:20 That is a fun one. And it did lead to that other fun fact that yes, he did have like a castle shaped home up in I think up behind where UCB is and that in I Hate saying those feelings or those released because whichever one a child named cool See that would be if he had cool cage like that's The octopus is full name, of course, was cool. OK, your pets just take care of your cat.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Oh, amazing. It's the vote on that. Yeah, I don't even know if Patricia had to put up with the octopus. Maybe that was the final straw in their relationship. I don't know. You know who knows how What's her name Presley felt about it? All right, so Elvets. Yeah all this press we're together for a while All right
Starting point is 00:42:17 Where are we we're back to Back to Madigan wait,, did I script the order? I feel like I haven't gone in a while. Yeah, it's Ricky. All right, Ricky. Yeah. The next Alien film is called, to be, you know, I don't know how soon it's going to come out, but the name has already been announced that it is Alien. There's that colon again.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Oh, man. See, Alien colon remus. Uh, I'm going to say yes. I love the speed. You throw out the incorrect answer every time. Maybe that's why I screwed the order up is I'm scared to go to you. But I told you my theory about colons. I that's I can't put any time into that.
Starting point is 00:43:14 That's someone else's problem. Alien Remus sounds right. That sounds like something I won't be seeing. Do you know what the current one is called? What? Alien Romulus. Oh. So that's the joke is that Remus and Romulus were Roman mythology.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Alien Romulus? See, why is Remus any weirder? I don't know what Romulus is referring to. If I had to guess because I haven't seen it yet, but if I had to guess, sounds like it might be the name of the ship that they're on. Because that's very, you know, because the other previous ships have been Nostromo
Starting point is 00:43:52 and Prometheus and stuff like that. So that might be what Romulus means. So I do not have any intel as to what they would call the next alien movie. Oh wait, so it hasn't been announced? No, I made up that it was announced. Oh, okay. Too tricky. Too tricky. And it worked. Oh, wait, so it hasn't been announced? No, I made up that it was announced. Oh, OK. To trick you.
Starting point is 00:44:07 Oh, I see. They should call it Alien Cool. Yes. Alien Cool Cage. All right, Austin, turn again, whether it is or it isn't, I want you to have a chance to catch up to Matt. When Marley Matlin won the Oscar, she wasn't old enough to drink. Wow, I have no idea. I'm gonna I'm gonna take I'm gonna I'm
Starting point is 00:44:43 gonna say no. We keep the streak of nose you guys say she was not old enough to drink oh no I'm gonna say yeah she was in fact old enough to drink so cuz your statement is I'm gonna say wasn't old enough to drink so you're saying that's false I'm saying that's false correct you think she was old enough to drink. I really have no idea. But yeah, that's what I'm gonna say. She was 21 when she won the Oscar.
Starting point is 00:45:12 So yes, she could drink, she could celebrate properly. The year before when William Hurt won and she was dating him because they had filmed that movie, she could not drink when she went to that Oscars, but I bet you she did anyway. All right, Austin, you are on the board. We go back to Matt who can absolutely solidify his lead if he gets this one right. We're all just gonna go home.
Starting point is 00:45:41 We are in our homes. Inside Out 2, Inside Out 2 is the ninth highest grade Um, we are in our homes inside out too. It's like out too is the ninth highest grossing movie of all time. I literally just read this today and that is true. Let me get my truth whistle that I forgot. I forgot to give you the whistle when you, when you got it, uh, Austin. So here's your whistle. And now here's your whistle Matt. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:15 One billion and let me see if I wrote this down. I wrote down so small. One billion, $600 million I wrote this down, I wrote it down so small. $1,600,000,000 have been made by Inside Out 2 while everybody's saying motion picture exhibition is dead. He's crazy. Yeah, and I think it's unfortunate that it's more like special event movies that children can see.
Starting point is 00:46:43 But although Deadpool and Wolverine is cleaning up too, and that's a hard R. And I was at Disneyland recently and there's signs for it everywhere. And I'm just like, how do you tell your kids you can't see the movie that was promoted all over Disney? It's like it doesn't make any sense. How do you tell them that they can't see the movie that's in Jack in the Box commercials like it's so hard. Yeah, it's so weird.
Starting point is 00:47:08 All right. Well, Matt ran away with this thing, but I was so close. It was it was close. I really wanted to it was fun. But Ricky because you're so so fast on the gun and and so wrong every time I want to I want to give you one more Okay Because I totally screwed up the order. So you deserve to at least get one point. That sounds good. All right Al Pacino
Starting point is 00:47:38 You know that guy? Mm-hmm. You worked with him. No, I don't know him personally, but I'm familiar with his work, but no, I don't know him sadly Okay, I just you know taking a shot. You've worked with some of the great. It's true. It's true. Yeah Michelle Obama true Al Pacino got seven million dollars for Godfather part three true Three. True. Oh, my God, it's like a it's a skill you have. Am I wrong again? Without thinking it with split second response and it's wrong every time.
Starting point is 00:48:17 Oh, God. See, that's my niche. That is amazing. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Is it very tricky? How much did he get? Did he get one million dollars? Question, though, because he got five. No. Oh. Thank you. Thank you. How much did he get? Did you get one million dollars question though? Cause he got five mil. Oh, that's, but it's an interesting story though, because you know, when they made, uh, when they went to make Godfather three, uh, Robert Duvall was like, Hey, you're going to have to really pay me for this one. Cause I'm in the first two and a huge part of their success and all that and uh and they
Starting point is 00:48:46 couldn't come to terms on the money so that's strike one against godfather three suddenly doesn't have one of the best characters in the whole godfather saga it's just not there and they just say oh he went to europe or some shit like that and then so now Pacino they can't afford to lose Pacino right because then they're really screwed. And Pachino said, I want seven million. He's like, I want seven million dollars. I tried to do a Pachino impression. And and points.
Starting point is 00:49:15 He also wanted back end money. And Francis Ford Coppola, crazy, then crazy now, said, no, do it for five or don't do it at all and Pacino had to settle for five mil Here's a fact for you. He was trying to get out and they keep pulling him back Do you know who is first offered the role of Michael Corleone? Oh Let me think about this for a sad really good. Oh Damnit and I'm not making a break. Not your junior about this for a sad really good. Oh, damn it. And I'm not making a break. Roger Junior, Jack Nicholson.
Starting point is 00:49:51 Oh, he was like, I think this person should be Italian. That's what he said. I don't see myself playing that. I think you should hire someone Italian. That's what happened. Not Italian. Yeah, those are the best. Those are the best when somebody turns down a role. They're just like a very reasonable, like they don't.
Starting point is 00:50:06 They're not trying to get the money or trying to, you know, stretch and act Italian or whatever. Just get an Italian guy. I love it. He's like, I don't think I'm right for this. I mean, that TV show, they made a TV show about the making of it's on Paramount Plus. I can't remember what it's called, but the offer. Offer. I should, of course, I should remember that.
Starting point is 00:50:27 But in that movie, they point out that the studio Paramount was just thought that Al Pacino was too short and too too not famous. Wow. So he was constantly on the verge of being fired from from that movie. And in fact, I think it was the scene where he kills that guy that kind of cemented him. It's like, okay, we'll let him continue to play the part. Okay, I got to do, I have one more that I wrote just as sort of a tiebreaker,
Starting point is 00:50:58 but now it's just exciting to see if Ricky can keep his going. I bet I can answer it quickly. It's going. Yeah, I would love it if you could just do it one more time or or at least get one right. And, you know, I will try. I am trying my best. I'm not. No, I know.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Yeah. But also, even if you were trying to get everyone wrong, how could you how could you be accurate? You know what I mean? So it's just it's impressive. So let's try. Let's try one more In the most picture ET Gertie played by Drew Barrymore dresses up as an Indian for Halloween Yeah, I'm gonna give you the right whistle even though you were wrong.
Starting point is 00:51:45 OK. What does she dress up? I can't remember what she dressed up as. She's the cowboy. Oh, that's right. Yes, she dresses up in a little cowboy outfit. There was also a kid dressed as Yoda. I remember that.
Starting point is 00:51:57 Yes. Oh, man. Don't get me started. Oh, man. Don't get me started. OK, you started me. Here's the thing. Spielberg and Lucas those fuckers they
Starting point is 00:52:09 They put references to Star Wars in ET and then in later Star Wars movies There are ETS in the meeting hall like they're real aliens in Star Wars universe Oh, wow, it doesn't make any sense in Star Wars universe. Oh, wow. It doesn't make any sense because he plays with like he plays with little Star Wars figures, action figures in ET. Yeah. And so I've never forgiven either of those guys for that. It's a good thing they made a lot of great movies
Starting point is 00:52:37 because otherwise I'd be really mad at them. And also just another piece of fun trivia, because I was looking up, you know, I saw that inside out was the ninth highest grossing movie even though it only came out a month ago. The top grossing movie of all time is still Avatar and it is made two billion nine hundred thousand dollars too much. Wow. Yeah. And Avatar three is number three of all time highest grossing movies. And I don't, I never met anybody that was excited about, uh, avatar too. Um, all right. So congratulations to Matt O'Brien. You are our winner today. So go ahead and promote yourself first. What are you want?
Starting point is 00:53:22 What do you want to plug today? Um, if everyone could follow me on Instagram at Matt O'Brien, that would be nice. And Matt, would you, is there any chance you'd be available to join us at the Hollywood Improv on Tuesday, September 17th at 730? Yeah, that's no, I'm going to Europe for three weeks next week.
