Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Gary Veeder and I have a new limited series podcast, Number One Dad. Over this 10 part series, I'll go searching for the truth about my father, a con man who I haven't spoken to in 24 years. He wants me to act like my injury is even worse for a payout. He's posing as my attorney in a court. There were moments where Manny would assume the role of undercover police officer. Listen to Number One Dad on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Hello, acclaimed comics writer and notorious Scott Summers hater, Rosie Knight. Well, hello Emmy winning podcaster and totally unbiased, Cargarian royal supporter, Jason Concepcion. Somehow the X-Ray Vision podcast has returned. And like always, we'll be here every week. You'll hear from TV writers, actors, comics, theaters, pop culture critics. Nothing is off the table.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Listen to X-Ray Vision on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If you love comedy movies and Hollywood satire, you're gonna wanna listen to a brand new podcast called Get It to Dutch. In Get It to Dutch, we play three aspiring screenwriters on a quest to get a script to big time Hollywood producer, Dutch Huxley.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Each week on the podcast, we perform a movie script right before your ears. It's like going to a movie with your eyes closed. And we have amazing guest stars, including Tim Robinson, Rob Hubel, Lily Sullivan, Jamie Moyer, and Weird Al Yankovic. Listen to Get It to Dutch, a screenwriter's journey on iHeart, radio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Engine, engine number nine. On the New York transit line. If my train goes off the track, pick it up, pick it up,
Starting point is 00:01:42 pick it up. Back on the scene, crispy and clean. You can thrive at the box, you can't intervene. You're yelling. I have to turn my headphones down. No one likes that. I realized that I didn't even have this in front of the mic. Let me put this in front of the mic so the pops go away. I don't even think the spit card was gonna help
Starting point is 00:01:59 with any of that. The spit card isn't gonna turn down the volume on the yelling. Yo, so can I just say, first of all, somebody hacked my Twitter, eat a dick. Second- Really? What were you hacking on Twitter when you were hacked? I don't know what I'm hacking. I can't get into Twitter right now. Daniel said you were hacking-
Starting point is 00:02:15 You're hacking MacBooks and altcoins. You were hacking MacBooks- People don't buy that shit. This is going to be so late in the game anyway. You're not going to know, but- Did you change your password? I am in the midst of getting it done right now. But that being said, there's another log out and log out. You don't even need to be on there.
Starting point is 00:02:32 I'm not even I'm not on it. What is it called? X I'm not X. I'm not on X either. But you should definitely change your password and log out. But there was this other thing that I was on. Pornhub. I'm always missing.
Starting point is 00:02:47 No disrespect to other websites out there. We're going to do it. You're not doing it like Pornhub. You're just not doing it like your wife's in the background. As you see, my wife walks through. I give up. Don't you say I give up. Don't give up. I give up. Don't you say I give up. Don't give up.
Starting point is 00:03:07 I give up. She says I give up. I give up. Come say hi. I give up. Your face is so beautiful and shiny. Facial. Oh, somebody got a facial and HK and for me.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Come say hi. You've got to get it. Hi, guys. Hi, Casey. How you doing? She of the mic. Hi guys. Hi Casey. Hi. How you doing? She can't hear us. I can't hear. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Hi. Zach, I feel like the only way I see you is if I'm on the podcast. I know, I know. I'm in New York City now, but I hear you got a facial. You look beautiful. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Candice. Candice Thank you. Candice. Candice killed it. Yeah, this did good. What does she do? She takes like a buffer and just buffs your face off? Yeah, she buffs it, she pokes it. She buffs it! She prys it.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Does she do extractions? Yep. I like that when they get like blackheads out. And not many do that anymore. Why? It's like not allowed? Because they're all bougie. They all want to charge you $500 to just rub your face
Starting point is 00:04:08 and throw some cream on it. But not Yelay. Nope, Candice gets in there and gets dirty. If I'm going to get a facial, I want someone to get all the blackheads out. Candice Mayel, she's awesome. Candice Mayel. Do you want to give her Instagram a shout out?
Starting point is 00:04:21 She's probably very busy, I imagine. I don't know her Instagram. Well, she's Candice Baiel, everyone. She's in LA. She's a facial. Maiel. How do you spell that? M-I-E-L-L-E.
Starting point is 00:04:32 There you go. Candice is gonna be booked now. Yeah, that would be awesome. All right, Casey, we love you. Bye, bye, love you guys. Donald's... So as I was saying, P hub, no back to it. Nobody does it like porn hub.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Okay. Listen, Donald, can you focus on something else? Yes. I went to the Rangers game last night and I got to tell you something. They lost. Fucking your bad luck, bro. Don't say that. You're the ultimate bad luck. Don't say that you're the ultimate I don't see that if the MSU
Starting point is 00:05:07 Because you're bridging tunnel front and like you're a fucking New Yorker right now and you're only there six months a year How many fucking years do I have to live in Manhattan for you to think that I'm not bridging tunnel? But then here 20 years Listen, bro I don't want the bridge divided by two because it's half of a year. Listen, bro. I'm telling you, I don't want the Bridgetonnel. Divided by two because it's half of a year. Okay. So really you've lived there for 10. I want to tell you, just now starting to tell you, you don't even like sports. I do now. I got to tell you, I granted it's playoff hockey,
Starting point is 00:05:41 but I got to say you hockey live is fun. The crowd is crazy. But the game is dope too, man. And also it doesn't stop. What I like about it is doesn't stop. It barely stops. And I also appreciate it. Timeouts and stuff like that. They're very brief and you can tell when there's TV timeouts and stuff.
Starting point is 00:06:00 But the crowd is so amped. I also appreciate it that they call it an intermission. I really like that. There were two intermission. It wasn't a half time. It wasn't any of that bullshit. It was an intermission. It was your talk.
Starting point is 00:06:17 It was your kind of speak. Yeah, I liked it. I really, it's so fun, man. And then we got to go down to the, this sort of owner's dining room area. And, and during each intermission and, and there's like food and it was just really swank. You're swanking.
Starting point is 00:06:34 I just love the fans. I love the, the energy of it is crazy. I got a whole little MSG thing figured out right now. You, you kind of- I'm going Friday. I'm going again Friday. You are falling in love with New York City, look at you. You're falling in love with it.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I love it, the only thing that's missing is you. I wish you were here. I wish you were here after this podcast, we would stroll down the street and get a meal together. You are just doing this for the people so that they believe that you miss me, but you don't miss me. No, I've had drinks with Johnny,
Starting point is 00:07:02 I hung out with Bill Lawrence. Drinks with Johnny, hung out with Bill Lawrence. Yeah. In any of those conversations where you're like, you know, I really fucking miss Donald right now. Absolutely, there's always talk about you. Oh, I gotta tell you, so I'm in this fancy owner's dining room last night at MSG
Starting point is 00:07:19 and a guy comes up to me and he says, hey, I love the podcast. And I go, oh, thank you so much. And my friend whispers in my ear, do you know who that is? And I'm like, no. And he says, that's John Sykes, the president of iHeart. Well, well, well. That's so funny.
Starting point is 00:07:36 You met John Sykes for the first time? I never met John Sykes before. I guess he's also the CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I'm told. That's correct. Shout out, John. Yeah, he's a dope dude. He was very nice. He was also the CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I'm told. That's correct. Shout out, Jon. Yeah, he's a dope dude. He was very nice.
Starting point is 00:07:48 He was very nice. And he loves the podcast. He was like, you guys are killing it. Dope dude. Isn't that cool? That's really cool. And I just thought it was going like, hey, I love the podcast. You had a fucking Jeff Zucker moment, bro.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Well, I didn't give him noogies and say. I was hoping you said something like it. So I fucking. No, I didn't give him noogies and say I was hoping you I was hoping you said something like it so I fucking No, I didn't embarrass myself at all and he was so nice and he loves our show and It was cool. It was really it was neat. That's awesome, bro That's really cool Did you guys hang out after no, I just talked to him for a second You know everyone there is sort of you know, there's so much going on. There's so much stimuli Everyone's doing their own thing, but I got to talk to him for a second.
Starting point is 00:08:26 It's big. The Rangers are, you know, they're still fighting. Yeah, I learned so much. I didn't know you could take the goalie out and put another man on the ice when you need to. That's cool. It's also dangerous. It's very dangerous.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Did you know that? I know that's how they lost their third goal. Did you know that was a thing? Yeah, man. My brother, I grew up in Hell's Kitchen. I know you're Mr. Sports, but I didn't know hockey. No, but listen, let me explain this shit to you. My whole neighborhood is fucking straight up Irish, man.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Like straight up. I grew up in, and now it's a little bit more integrated and there are way more cultures. But when I was growing up, hockey was the number one sport in my neighborhood. And it wasn't necessarily ice hockey, it was roller hockey too. Street hockey.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Yeah, street hockey. So cats were on roller blades were coming out or, so my brother D, played hockey growing up at a very young age. And so I learned a little bit from him. And everybody in my building who I grew up with were all hockey fans, Ranger fans, Islander fans. There were very few Devil fans.
Starting point is 00:09:42 I'm sorry. Sorry, New Jersey. I love you, New Jersey. You wouldn't be a Devil's fan if you were very few devil fans. I'm sorry. Sorry, New Jersey. I love you, New Jersey. You wouldn't be a devil's fan if you were, you know, in Hell's Kitchen, I imagine. MSG is right there. Right, so we're straight up Knicks fans. We're straight up Ranger fans in my neighborhood.
Starting point is 00:09:59 I'm a Giants fan. There are a lot of Jets fans though. I'm a Yankee fan. There are a few Met fans. Not a lot, but there are a lot of Jets fans though. I'm a Yankee fan, there are a few Mets fans. Not a lot, but there are a few Mets fans. I did like the Mets growing up, but I'm a Yankee fan. You know who I sat in front of at the game in Met and my father, rest in peace, would have lost his mind
Starting point is 00:10:16 was John Franco, the relief pitcher for the 86 Mets. Yeah, dude, come on. That's the series right there. Dude, my father, I was, I I want to be sincere for a second I had a night last night because my friend is so dialed into MSG So I got this amazing experience where I'm like, I was just thinking of my father so much So he would have been a kid in a candy store We I met James Dolan and we sat at his table at dinner beforehand
Starting point is 00:10:42 We sat in front of John Franco. I just kept thinking of my dad, because my dad loved all sports, but particularly loved baseball. So I don't know, it was just a cool moment where I was remembering my dad and thinking about how much he would have loved this moment. It's beautiful, bro. It was baller.
Starting point is 00:10:57 The funny thing too was like, so at the intermissions, you're invited to go back into this James Dolan's dining room. And no one, he wasn't coming back to his table. So my friend was like, are we to the ushers and the people that work there, like, you sure we're allowed to sit at the table? And they're like, yeah, yeah, it's fine.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Cause you were with them at dinner, so it's fine. So the two intermissions, just me and him sitting at the owner's table in this big dining room. And people are walking by and we're just like sitting there smiling, eating sundaes. Yeah, baby. Anyway, it's fun. It took me a long time to realize how fun going to MSG is. I wonder if that's why Spike loves his floor seats and his backstage passes so much.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Well, he's so dialed. He's not even, I don't think, yeah, there's some people there who are such regulars. You man, the crowd, Michael J. Fox was there last night. So was- Did you say hi? Matthew, I said hi to Matthew Boderick. I didn't see, I wasn't close enough to Michael J. Fox was there last night. So was- Did you say hi? I said hi to Matthew Broderick. I didn't see, I wasn't close enough to Michael J. Fox, but I said hi to Matthew Broderick.
Starting point is 00:12:12 So I'm going to see the Alka-lite tonight, the Aka-lite tonight. What however the fuck you say it. What is it? The Aka-lite. What is it? It's a Star Wars show. Oh, are you going to like a premiere or something?
Starting point is 00:12:25 I'm going to a premiere tonight to see it. I'm supposed to take my son, but it starts at seven. It's kind of late for him, so I don't know if that's going to happen. Why can't you give him a special night out? It's a big deal. Because he's not really that into Star Wars, you know what I mean? And I don't want to fucking do that to him. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:12:41 Oh, so he wouldn't care to go to a premiere of a show? No. I mean, he might like the popcorn and the Sprite, but that's about it. Oh, well, why don't you bring Casey? I don't know that she wants to go to see a Star Wars either. I'm the Star Wars fan in the house. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I mean, I couldn't get these guys to watch Star Wars if it was, you know, water and they were thirsty as fuck. You know what I'm saying? Like, right. While they're watching, while they're watching, by the dozen though, over and over and over and over and over again, every morning. So I'm going to see the acolyte tonight.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Yeah. I'm happy for you, man. I know. I'm somewhat excited. I don't know. I don't know what to expect. Do you have a good fit? No, I'm a go incognito. I'm not going to try and fucking be Mr. Hey, I'm here excited. I don't know. I don't know what to expect. Do you have a good fit? No, I'm going to go incognito.
Starting point is 00:13:25 I'm not going to try and fucking be Mr. Hey, I'm here for Star Wars. But why can't you put on a nice fit? That's because that's not my stage right now. I'm not in the mood to do that. You're just going to go in sweatpants. I'm not in the mood to do all that shit. I'm just going to see a fucking movie and enjoy myself. That's it.
Starting point is 00:13:42 All right. Yeah. I'm not going to, I'm not going to, if I can, I'm not, if I can, I'm gonna skip the press line, all of that shit. Are you gonna put moisturizer on your face? I never put lotion on, guys. You know this. Joelle is shaking her head.
Starting point is 00:13:56 She just does not approve. It's literally unbelievable to me. Yeah, it's unbelievable to me too. And I don't have skin like Joelle. I mean, just Joelle is a walking ad. I am an oily, oily man. They have lotions for that. They have, she's like sad.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Someone goes shopping with you. She's so sad. She's like, they have lotions for that. By the way, I sent- It works in my favor. The last time we had this conversation, I sent Casey the moisturizer I use, because I was like, oh, give this to Donald,
Starting point is 00:14:23 because she goes, do you know how many products I have here? He won't use any of them. So I wasn't- Well, she's like, the gold rush is coming soon. I can see them. I can't get him lotion, I'm panning for gold. We came all the way from Texas to San Francisco to get us to Shrek it. I ain't got any time to put a lotion on his face.
Starting point is 00:14:56 I'm panning for gold nuggets. Casey, what you do for a living? I'm a prospector, dad. We have a great show. Casey, what you do for a living? I'm a prospector, damn it. We have a great show. We have Michael Mosley here. By the way, it's the last episode of Scrubs we're ever gonna watch. Ever.
Starting point is 00:15:13 I was realizing as I was making my notes today, for those of you who've been with us the whole time, for those of you who have been with us since the beginning, since the get-go, since that is the last episode of Scrubs we are gonna watch. We're done, it's over. The experiment will be completed in this hour.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Well, we don't know how long the show's gonna be today. It could be a short one. Well, I'm just saying the experiment of the rewatch of Scrubs nine seasons is done with this very episode 9 13. It's a bad luck number. How do you feel? I think we had a great time doing this. The experiment?
Starting point is 00:15:55 Yes, the experiment. Fuck yeah. This is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. What are you talking about? It's so much fun, right? Dude, are you kidding me? I don't want it to be over. I mean, I'm glad it-
Starting point is 00:16:09 I don't either, man. I'm kinda like, maybe we should watch it again. No, no, no. I don't think we should do that to ourselves. Let's do it again. I want to- Remember that. Oh my God. Did you watch that Broadway kid
Starting point is 00:16:22 I sent you singing? That motherfucker's hilarious. He's so funny. I sent you I'm singing that motherfuckers hilarious He's so funny to everybody. I gotta give you I Don't know if Joel's been watching my DMS lately or not, but she usually gives good feet that motherfucker is hilarious I gotta give this guy a shout out and if we're gonna do we have we gotta talk about first and then I'll go But we got out one too. All right. But I want to say that this guy is so funny.
Starting point is 00:16:48 His name is, uh, Gabe Gibbs, you guys on Instagram and he's like, uh, he's, his bio says songwriter, comedian, Broadway performer, and he takes songs and he, um, he Broadway of fives them. And, um, did I send you Donald the I send you, Donald, the Drake one? Yes. There was one he did in case Drake needs to, his title was, In Case He Needs to Change Genres, because after this, let me just play you a little snippet.
Starting point is 00:17:20 I think you're ready to try it, all on your own. Go ahead. Bend that ass over. Come on, you're already doing it. Let that coochie breathe. Yes, just like I showed you. Come on, shake that ass bitch. Hands on your knees.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Hands on your knees hands on your knees hands on your knees and you can shake that ass for Drake but now I'm so proud you can shake that ass for me. He's incredible. And he did JLo the music. He does the J. So he does what he does is what if these songs were in musicals? What if all of these rap songs or Should I play a little JLo? The JLo one is hilarious. It's the last musical number. The J.Lo one is hilarious. It's the last musical number. It could be the act break, or it could be the final number in the show.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Listen, this is, I want to say we should have Gabe Gibbs on the show, Joel, but this guy makes me laugh so hard. This is the last musical number from the J.Lo musical. I'm still Jenny from the block that when you grew up on I used to have a little now I got a lot but no matter where I go I know where I came from I came from the I came from the bright. Amazing, right? Fucking A, dude. I love that guy. Joel, please book him.
Starting point is 00:19:33 He's hilarious. That genre of, there's a whole world of like, obviously, as we all know, anything you're interested in, but on Instagram, the algorithm knows I love Broadway. So it sends me these comedians who do funny Broadway shit spoof Broadway and that guy's so funny. I Just I came from That's just hilarious, dude, all right, so this is my Instagram moment
Starting point is 00:20:01 Nostalgia is my shit right now for some. All of the things that I grew up on are now popping up on my Instagram. 80s nostalgia, 80s nostalgia. So like, uh, uh, the Garfield, remember the Garfield and Heathcliff hour? A lot of people don't remember it. This was my era. And they had like Heathcliff, Heathcliff, no one should terrorize the neighborhood. Anyway, it was the theme song for his moment, right? His half hour.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I found this one from, or Instagram sent me this one. This is one of my favorite commercials from back in the day. And I guess I was in my teens, but I just think it's made like a movie. I'm going to put it on screen so you can see it. I don't know how well it's going to just hold the mic up to the thing with jiggy Off in the distance the game's dragging on there's strikes on the batter some runners are on It's suddenly Everyone's looking at me My mind has been wondering what could it be
Starting point is 00:21:14 They point to the sky and I look up above And a baseball falls into my glove I play right field. It's important to know you gotta know how to catch. You gotta know how to throw. That's why I play in right field. Way up where the dandelions grow. As a proud sponsor of Little League Baseball, Pizza Hut welcomes all the kids who make it great. Dude, when I was, I guess I was 14, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be coming on after school and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Right, yeah, I remember that. And that was Pizza Hut's number one fucking jump off. And it was one of the, I remember thinking like, holy fuck, this is one of the dopest commercials. Cause it captured Sandlot, but it also kept like whoever sent the cinematographer and the director for that commercial really knew how to fucking shoot like, bad news bears, all of that stuff. It captured that feeling. As a youth, I remember that. And now as an adult looking back, I played Little League Baseball. I played PAL Baseball. That shit was a lot of fun. And that's what it felt like when the fucking scrub that you put all the way out in the middle of nowhere
Starting point is 00:22:35 fucking makes a great play. Yeah. That was sweet. Good ad. It's one of the, I mean, in my opinion, it's one of the best ads, man. But I, anyway. It's not as good as... mean in my opinion, it's one of the best ads man, but I anyway, it's not as good as All right, Michael Moses here five six seven eight Michael Mosley, welcome to the podcast. Hi, everybody. Can you hear me? Aloha, bro.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Yeah, we can hear you. Can you hear us? All right, good. Yeah, yeah, good to see you all. Good to see you too. It's so good to see you, man. Thanks for having me. Where are you? I'm in LA, I'm in my home.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Very nice. Yeah, where are you guys at? I'm in my garage. Donald's in his garage in La La Land. This is Danel, who's our engineer and editor, and that's Joelle Monique. She's our producer. Hi Joelle.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Dude, we're so happy to have you because it's, you know, we've been doing this thing and we've been wanting, this is the very last episode of the podcast in its first incarnation, which was to do a rewatch of all of the episodes. And we just finished with this one watching 9.13. And we're gonna keep the podcast going because we're having so much fun We just finished with this one watching 9.13
Starting point is 00:24:07 and we're gonna keep the podcast going because we're having so much fun and we're just gonna joke around and keep doing our thing. But we wanted to have you on because as we watched season nine, Donald and I have had lots of thoughts, good and bad. But one thing we've said over and over and over again is just how, what a phenomenal actor you are. You steal the fucking season, bro.
Starting point is 00:24:25 You really do, man. You steal the season, bro. You guys are sweet. Thank you. No, that was, no, that's so sweet to say. No, it was amazing. It was an amazing experience. It was my first time, you know, being on a show with a single digit number on a call
Starting point is 00:24:42 sheet where I had to be there, you know. And yeah, it was just, it was my, it was an amazing experience. It was an amazing experience. And I'm glad you guys are doing this. Do you, tell us about, if we go back to the beginning, how you got the part, because, you know, there was this whole new push, obviously, for season nine to bring in, you know,
Starting point is 00:25:03 to keep the show going with new younger people. And it was a huge deal to get that part. They saw everyone in town, I remember. What was your experience like? I mean, we have a lot of actors that listen. I'm sure they'd love to know, you know, what your audition process was like. Well, I had read for Bill for a pilot before,
Starting point is 00:25:24 while you guys are still doing one, it probably towards you, you guys are getting towards the end of your scrubs. I did a show called Elphamon. It was a pilot that Carrie Aron wrote and Bill directed. And he was just, it was awesome. It was a great experience, but it never went. And then this thing popped up.
Starting point is 00:25:39 And so I kind of knew him. And I think it was just, you know, and then all of a sudden you're standing in front of a network and then all of a sudden you're standing in front of a network and then all of a sudden you know you're signing a contract and then all of a sudden you're at a table read you know and uh and it was it was great I mean it was nerve-racking because you guys had kind of created this brand and this world and this universe and you did eight seasons yeah yeah yeah and it had ended so beautifully. I remember, I think you might've directed that last episode,
Starting point is 00:26:08 Zach, did you direct the last episode? No, actually Rick Blue directed the last episode. No, no, no, no, you know, you're conflating two things. He sang the season eight finale. Yes, the one that was like a dream, like a memory dream that was like kind of, it was a really beautiful sequence at the end. With the projections, I didn't direct that.
Starting point is 00:26:24 The projections were my idea, it was inspired by beautiful sequence at the end. With the projections, I didn't direct that. The projections were my idea, and it was inspired by something I had done before, but I didn't direct the episode. I forgot if it was Bill or who it was, but Joelle, do you remember that? It was beautiful. You guys looked that up so we can give them credit. But yeah, thank you.
Starting point is 00:26:38 That's what was kind of the proper series finale of Scrubs as it was known before the medical school incarnation that is season nine. I've done it a couple of times and every time I've done it, it's usually the end. I came in on Legends of Tomorrow and thinking, we got one more season, we're going to fucking go out with a bang. I'm thinking, holy shit, How do I, this is a fucking show that's been on for like 10 years or some shit like that. And I'm coming in now. I'm,
Starting point is 00:27:12 you know, I was as big as I possibly could be. I, you know, the scope was, you know, that shit was fucking difficult to, it wasn't difficult to join, but it was difficult to try and fit in. And that's all I really wanted to do. And so coming into season nine, at least you had people that were new with you, though, bro. At least you had a block of, you know what I mean? And you were and it was like you guys versus us. For me, it was me versus them.
Starting point is 00:27:38 And they were all cool and shit. But you know, I mean, you know how it is. You you you've experienced it in this and other things too. Yeah. Yeah. No, it was cool. I mean, it was fun because you guys, you know, I just remember coming in trying like, I was just like, just don't break the furniture. You know, hit your mark, stay in line. And, you know, and just be respectful of the process that these folks have already, you know, they, you guys have already made the soup. It's working. You know what I mean? So like, just, you know, if the fire's going, don't touch it. So yeah, it was just fun. But then you guys would like, I mean, you guys would be like on a bike, like riding through the back of a scene,
Starting point is 00:28:11 just like, just to try to like, you know, you were just fun. And it was your house. And you knew how to be in your house and play around in your house. And so that was kind of, it was just, it was a fun, it was a fun experience. But I did, you know, and I got to work with Eliza, and she'd kind of been on the show before. so she kind of knew, knew the rhythms and everything and how to so I was lucky that way. But yeah, there was a bunch of us that were all kind of looking at each other, like, okay, what are we doing? What's going to happen? What's this going to look like? You know, because I have to say, I'm not being self-deprecating about this, but I watched the show and I've said this on the podcast that I'm so not present and I'm so leaning into the jokes. I think I was sort of checked out in my head
Starting point is 00:28:57 and I'm being so broad and that I felt like when I watched season nine, you did such a good job of being grounded because the show is, we all know, is all over the place in its tone. Sometimes it tries to be very serious and succeeds. Sometimes it's fantasies and very silly. But what I admired about your performance
Starting point is 00:29:18 is that you always were real. You know, you dealt with these scenes that were, you know, sometimes ridiculous or sometimes, you know, sometimes ridiculous or sometimes, you know, didn't fully work, but you were always completely straight and real in them and still found a way to be funny, which I think is what we were kind of doing in the beginning of Scrubs in earlier episodes.
Starting point is 00:29:40 But in this season for me, I think I lost the plot a bit. Yeah, not only that, you and Eliza, your chemistry together, I mean, that was the most, in my opinion, I've said this a number of times on the show, that was the most interesting part of the season as well. And the most fun part of the season, you guys really did capture something and it kind of
Starting point is 00:30:06 reminded us of Cox and Jordan a little bit you know what I mean? Yeah. But um yeah so yeah speak on that. Well with I just lucked out having be Eliza you know we just we just you know we were just like friends and we're just like I think you know she was from like New Hampshire or something like that she had that accent she could pull out of know, I think she was from like New Hampshire or something like that. She had that accent. She could pull out of it, you know, and she, she was from like New Hampshire and I was from Iowa and we both just felt like these hicks, you know, that kind of, it kind of somehow somebody kicked us on stage together.
Starting point is 00:30:36 And so I think we just were kind of like, you know, brothers in arms like that a little bit. Um, it was easy and she's, you know, lovable, so easy to bounce off of her and to kind of, and she's always cracking jokes. She's like a comedian at her core, I think, you know what I mean? So she was always like, you know, the other thing on Scrubs is I find that, like, which I hadn't done before would be like, we would do a couple according to the script. And then the script would kind of go over and then the writers would come whisper something in your ear, somebody come over and somebody would have a different punchline.
Starting point is 00:31:07 So then you'd like, then you try to out punchline each other and just try to get that camera guy to shake because you knew if he was shaking and he was laughing and we knew we were doing something right. You know what I mean? And I remember that was kind of a cool experience. It was kind of what what's funny floats. And so, and you know what I mean? And if the best punchline would always win and would always usually make the cut, even if it wasn't what was on the page that day, I feel like, is that kind of how you guys remember it? Absolutely. By season nine though, we were going so far. Like I remember saying shit in season nine
Starting point is 00:31:37 where it was like, oh my God, I can't believe I just said that shit. And somebody's like, you know, Disney gets to keep all of these outtakes. And this was at the point where I was done. I don't even fuck let him keep that shit. I don't care. I remember that shit so much. Like I remember the outtakes getting so fucking outrageous that I was saying some
Starting point is 00:31:57 dumb shit about weed, all of that stuff. I'll never forget. I'll never forget. Well, yeah, I think that's I think that's what's great about the environment. If you feel like there's no wrong answer and you can just play, that's the ideal environment for us. Even when we're doing these T-Mobile ads, they're obviously scripted, but then we get to play around and be silly and allows us to just kind of really feel like we're a part of the creative process
Starting point is 00:32:29 in a way that isn't common. It's what Donald and I have been used to for a giant chunk of our career, but it isn't common for a lot of people. A lot of people are like, just say the joke. Well, there's something really cool about it. I've been at comedies that are like that too. Like I remember being on 30 Rock
Starting point is 00:32:43 and I remember Tina would be like, that's not how it was written. I was like, Oh right. Sorry. Cause I mean I come in from scrubs. It was like, and I, that's not, there's nothing she's obviously a genius, you know, but I just remember it was just two different schools. Like Bill would be like, like I remember cause I think I remember I was listening to the shade episode y'all just did. And, um, I remember Bill being around more I know he wasn't but he wasn't like Cougar Town like right across the lot. He was like
Starting point is 00:33:09 bike over here and there and stuff like that yeah so here's the here's the real deal holy feel in the beginning when Zack was around Bill would come around a lot more often because he and Zack have a connection much like Cox and JD very much like Cox and JD but uh uh uh Bill's a little bit more loving now quite oh now now he's a completely different person but even back then he was loving too even back then he was just a little bit more loving when we started he kind of loved you a little bit more than the rest of us bro keep it of loved you a little bit more than the rest of us, bro. Keep it 100. No, you've never said that. You're the favorite fucker. Don't even
Starting point is 00:33:50 try it. You're yelling A and B. You've never said this in all these episodes of the podcast. It's the final one. I got to say it now. Do you feel that Bill favored me as the favorite child? We should fucking do a survey, but absolutely, dude. We should do a survey. Ask everyone in the fucking cast and I'm bringing, well, here we go. Well, you know that outside of the show, we became very close.
Starting point is 00:34:17 To this day, we're very close. So yeah, he was like a big brother to me and that is true, but I've never heard you articulate that Dude, you come on bro. You know this everybody knows I didn't know that it was something that you were were conscious of I Was aloof how about that? Is that the right way to use it? What do you mean? You were aloof? I knew it I knew it but I pretended not to know.
Starting point is 00:34:45 You looked the other way. I looked the other way. Yes. Yes. Oh, man. No, Bill's been a big, I mean, beyond, I mean, so many things happen. If they're, Matt and O'Donnell had a whole career
Starting point is 00:34:59 before Scrubs, I was a waiter, and Bill like chose me from waiterdom. And then when I went on to make my movies, I was a waiter and Bill like chose me from from waiterdom and And then when I went on to make my movies he would give me notes and and was a mentor to me in so many ways and Ask me how many times bill has given me notes Have you given the real screenplays that you've written to read? Say it again. Have you given bill screenplays that you've written for him to read? No, dude. I'm not a writer. Oh, well, there you go. I don't think I don't think he can give you notes on you
Starting point is 00:35:30 Can't give you notes on nothing Do you like notes Donald or do not like notes on shit that I have written like I wrote this thing Called Alabama Jackson and it would have been nice if I could have gotten some notes from Bill But I kind of was a little nervous to ask him and it was this little tiny small thing and I didn't want to do that. But yeah, those, I, when it comes to stuff like that, absolutely. He's fucking the king. He's he in my eyes, he's the best to do it right now.
Starting point is 00:35:57 You know what I mean? Yeah. He's the king. You know what I mean? It was great. I mean, I remember at the table read you remember and i still this is like my like the golden rule he was just like we're at the table read and he was like i just have one rule you know don't be an asshole and he was like all these people are gonna be working late into
Starting point is 00:36:13 friday night and missing soccer games the next on saturday morning or basketball games on friday nights because they're gonna be here carrying stuff around to make you guys look pretty just don't be a dick you you know, just be cool. And that's always been kind of that's like that was the Bill Lawrence rule in my head that I've always carried with me. But he created he's and because of that he's created in me as I think I could say the same thing for Zack. I think every show that I've ever been on I've created a relationship with the crew way more than creating relationship necessarily
Starting point is 00:36:46 with actors on set, you know what I mean? Because I understand how important it is for them to enjoy what they're doing. You know what I mean? Actors, we for some reason need our own space and shit like that. But the crew is the people that are there when I go back to the fucking air conditioned Winnebago as Zach would call it. You know what I mean? And so I think it's real important. And I think Bill is the one that put that in me. Give these guys the love and as long as you don't hamper their day, entertain them
Starting point is 00:37:18 man. Cause they're fucking, they're there all night long and they have to deal with egos and assholes and not say anything. So, you know. Yeah. That, you know. And also just like make it, if you make the environment a family of people that are having fun, then it makes the job a blast.
Starting point is 00:37:37 No doubt. Yeah. Especially if it's a comedy. We're going to make it take a quick break, Michael Mosley. And then when we come back, we're going to go through a little bit of this episode. We don't have to talk a ton about it because it's not our best. But we'll be right back. I'm Gary Veeder and I have
Starting point is 00:37:59 a new limited series podcast called Number One Dad. It may have been the greatest scam for a sports fan. In the 90s, my dad and I ran a con for years where we snuck into the world's most prestigious arena, New York's Madison Square Garden. And I interviewed some of the biggest athletes in the world, even Michael Jordan. But this wasn't the only scheme my dad was pulling.
Starting point is 00:38:23 He's posing as my attorney in a court. Everything my dad did was a scam. There were moments where Manny would assume the role of undercover police officer. My father's never-ending string of lies ultimately broke apart my family, and at 15 years old, I completely cut him out of my life. That was 24 years ago. I have no idea where he lives or what he's up to, but my goal is to track him down and get to the truth about who my father,
Starting point is 00:38:52 Manny Veeder, really is. It's Brooklyn Federal Courthouse. My father was involved in a case from the early 90s, and I'm just trying to get information. You better hope that your dad doesn't find out about this before you're ready to talk to him. Sorry, you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Listen to Number One Dad on the iHeart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey everyone, I'm Mark. I'm Greg. I'm Brendan. And this is a trailer for a new podcast called Get It to Dutch, a Screenwriter's Journey. It's about screenwriting. And a journey. The three of us play aspiring screenwriters on a quest to get a hit Hollywood script to famous producer Dutch Huxley.
Starting point is 00:39:39 Well, I would say one of us is aspiring and the other two are sort of struggling. Which one of us is aspiring? Well, they're going to have to listen to the podcast. Hmm, but I don't know and I made the podcast. I made the podcast and I think you guys were along for the ride. Each week we bring in a script, we read it, and then we give each other notes. And you'll also hear about our adventures navigating the Hollywood system. The show features amazing guests like Tim Robinson, Lily Sullivan,
Starting point is 00:40:04 Weird Al Yankovic, and Rob Hubel. Unlike any great blockbuster, it's filled with heartbreak, adventure, suspense, and just a little tasteful nudity. And some distasteful nudity. Oh yeah, sorry about that guys. Listen to Get It to Dutch, a screenwriter's journey on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Happy Pride! It's time for a brand new podcast. Do you love weird pop culture facts? Like, I don't know, what is Tori Spelling's favorite salad? Well, then you're going to love the podcast I do with my best friend, Celebrity
Starting point is 00:40:37 Book Club with Stephen and Lily. You've probably seen books at Barnes and Noble and thought, uh, those look silly. I wonder what is inside of them. We've decided because we are grown consenting adults that we're going to read a book every single week. And here we are. You probably don't have time to read books. Let us do it for you. We discuss the inner workings of the minds of these authors at great detail. From Abraham Lincoln to Lauren Graham, John Stamos to Sylvia Plath. We cover lots of celebrities' books, be they memoirs, poetry, children's books, or cookbooks.
Starting point is 00:41:10 And we discuss them in nauseating detail. It's pretty academic. It's basically literary criticism. So get your degree, put your glasses on. And listen to Celebrity Book Club with Stephen and Lily on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. Somebody got sirens.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Somebody asked me, I'm in New York City. Mike thought Mike thought the same thing that Sarah thought. Mike thought that we were going to take a break. And oh, yeah, Mike, we take fake breaks because there's nothing to do. They add the commercials later. Sarah Chalk, when she was on, thought we were gonna have a little downtime
Starting point is 00:41:54 to chat off camera, if you will. And we had to explain to her the concept of podcast advertising. Copy that. But she's Sarah Chalk. She'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:42:08 I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:42:16 I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:42:24 I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you're talking about. No, it's hilarious. She's hilarious. But I've never once had any conversation with her that didn't start with like, you are not gonna believe what just happened to me. All right, so getting into the episode. So Mike, you've heard this show. We kind of just kind of talk through anything that, we talked through the vague, it's our last time, we need to savor it.
Starting point is 00:42:43 We go through the plot roughly and then talk about anything we thought was funny. I find myself writing a lot today. Really? Maybe it's because it's the last one. I think it's the last one. You want to keep your writing in. And I really wanted to, you know,
Starting point is 00:42:55 I paused it a couple of times to make sure I got all my thoughts out and didn't, you know. You did a good job then. Well, I- I don't know about a good job. I did my job. How about that? Okay, so there's a cadaver ceremony. I have no idea if this is a real thing or not. Go back. Let's
Starting point is 00:43:10 start from the beginning. Oh, no, I wanted to just do a plot point. But go ahead. The small hands are great with the ladies OBGYN. Cox and Turk walk the school halls, trying to predict the students medical futures, right? Right. Yes. Okay. So what's the first one? The first one is that they see Trang and they comment that he has small hands and that he'll be great with the ladies because he has small little hands. And also because he has Nikki Whelan as a- Yeah. So he's got Nikki Whelan as a girlfriend. So he's clearly good with the ladies.
Starting point is 00:43:42 And he's got small hands. And he's got small hands for to be an OBGYN.. And he's got small hands to be an OBGYN. I guess that would be a benefit to be an OBGYN. I don't know, I've never been to an OBGYN. But I think I'd prefer a doctor with small hands. Would you prefer a doctor with small hands when checking your rectum area? Yeah, why not?
Starting point is 00:44:01 I wouldn't prefer a doctor with large hands. But wouldn't you want him to be able to feel the walls to make sure? Wouldn't you want to be able to feel the walls? Even if he's got small hands, he can aim for the side. It's a lot more searching, though, I feel like. I feel like it's a lot more digging around with small hands, where big hands, it's like in and it's like, oh, shit, yeah, I feel. No. If I had the choice, I would choose small hands for my rectal exam.
Starting point is 00:44:24 OK. Okay. Okay. Lucy is going to be in pediatrics because she's taking care of Cole. Who's baby like, right? And she gives him a, she gives him a lollipop. Turk wants a student to look up to him. He doesn't have a, a, a, a, uh, what do you call it? Um, protege protege.
Starting point is 00:44:43 Thank you, Michael. So no one, he's jealous that Cox has that he has Drew. Yeah, yeah. And Drew is a great protege. Yeah, Drew seems to be the best doctor. I mean, I think that's pretty clear, right? The dude's a med student pulling files
Starting point is 00:45:03 from beds and shit like that. I know, but Drew seems to be the only character that I think is gonna be a great doctor. I mean, the others, I mean, maybe they'll all be okay, but Drew seems like he's a really good doctor. You don't think Triangle be a good doctor? Maybe, I just, they're all so jokey
Starting point is 00:45:22 and Bichet's character character Lucy is so flighty Everyone seems kind of all over the place. I mean if you were gonna pick one of these med students to be your doctor Wouldn't you pick Drew? Yes, absolutely. You don't want coal To do surgery to do anything not not at the end about the end of this show I don't want coal as a doctor on me at all Right exactly I don't want Cole as a doctor on me at all to cut me at all, ever. Right, exactly. All right, so there's gonna be this thing called the cadaver ceremony where they honor the family.
Starting point is 00:45:54 I'd be interested to know, Joel or Dan, if you could find out if this is actually a thing. But I guess you honor the families of the people that donated cadavers and thank them for the education that the young doctors were able to get from body from working on a cadaver. Out of the blue, Denise asked Drew to get married and or to have a baby. Yeah, that escalated escalated quickly. Michael, don't you think? Zero to 100 real baby. Yeah, what escalated escalated quickly. Michael, don't you think zero to 100 real quick?
Starting point is 00:46:26 Yeah, yeah. Isn't that kind of the thing that the will they won't they? It's a scrubs is always so good about the will they won't they? And, you know, people leaning into each other than leaning back. And then there's a commitment thing and then there are then that spooks people. Um, but yeah, it was it was fun. It was this was but This was crazy, man. She went hardcore in this one.
Starting point is 00:46:47 And you could tell that she's not playing around. Usually Denise is playing around and when she's talking, when they're talking, I guess it's foreplay for them. I guess that's what it is. Yeah, they do their verbal dance. Kids on a playground where you hit the girl over the head with your lunchbox to tell her for them or I guess that's what it is. Like when they're talking to each other. Yeah, they do their verbal dance. Kids on a playground where you like hit the girl over the head with your lunchbox to tell her you like her.
Starting point is 00:47:10 But then you guys go and fuck after that, which makes no sense. Well, it turns them on. This sort of repartee is their foreplay, you're right. But she comes right in with, let's get married. And then that really freaks out Drew. He's not down with that crazy talk. Cole's cancer is gone and completely.
Starting point is 00:47:33 And even though we learned that he's back in the tanning bed already and Cole really wants to be Turks protege. Well, he has surgeon like qualities, I should say. Well, because he's similar to Todd, in that he's sort of cocky. Self-absorbed. Yes. That is a surgeon stereotype,
Starting point is 00:47:54 that they're cocky and self-centered, right? Yeah, you gotta be. Look, we're gonna have somebody on the show who was a surgeon who did something like 3,000 surgeries in a month All right, you got to be a cocky motherfucker to do that. That was a number was it? I was something is that was fucking number dude. It was like 3,000 dude, I swear when he said that shit. I was like, what do you have a fucking conveyor belt and it just go
Starting point is 00:48:23 Body after body. Hey fake doctors, listeners, it's your boy DJ Danil. I wanted to offer a quick clarification. So Donald did hear the right number. It was 3000, but it wasn't 3000 surgeries. It was 3000 units of work. So I brought this up to Darren and wanted a clarification. So what was spectacular was that Darren did 3000s of units of work in a month, whereas
Starting point is 00:48:43 the average for a surgeon is about 10,000 per year. Now, each surgery has a different assignment for how many units it's worth based on complexity. Looking back at his log, he did 80 surgeries in October of 2023. So that is what he was referring to. 80 is still a lot of surgeries, but it's not 3000. Just wanted to offer a little clarification.
Starting point is 00:49:04 I forgot, what did he work on that guy? What was his, he was an orthopedic surgeon? Oh no, I don't know. I did that, I don't remember. You forgot what it was. We're gonna have him on, cause he was pretty amazing. We spoke, Donald and I, this gentleman doctor
Starting point is 00:49:17 donated to a charity that Jake Tapper does every year for wounded warriors. And so Donald and I did a Zoom call with him, and he was so interesting and his story was so incredible. We're like, we got to have you on the show because we shouldn't be just doing this privately. We want you to tell everybody what you do. All right. So then there's a fantasy that Lucy has
Starting point is 00:49:40 where there's a marching band for a different patient named Ron. No, it's not a fantasy. That's what she knows that they're going to do. where there's a marching band for a different patient named Ron? No, it's not a fantasy. That's what they, that's what she knows that they're gonna do. She was at the rehearsal for it. Oh, she was at the rehearsal. Yeah. Okay, and Ron had a vestigial tail, which I guess people can be born with a tail?
Starting point is 00:50:00 Wasn't that in, wasn't that in... That was a movie with Jason Alexander where he has a tail. Yeah, Jason Alexander, what's the name? Him and Jack Black. We not even was it about the scene, women's. Yeah. Smaller or something. Yeah. Shallow. Movie. So that's what it was.
Starting point is 00:50:17 Shallow how and he and he has a tail at the end of it. Yeah. And it wags at the end. That's so gross Is it? Why because you don't because you don't have one. There's somebody out there that when you said that shit was like, oh man Fuck you Zach There's a couple of listeners that were like man Fucking Zach's a dick man. He's talking about my tail and I'm gross. I'm sorry if you have a tail. I really want to apologize. I just think... You can cancel my tail people.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I don't want to be the world's... Listen, tail people. He's trying to cancel you. Zach wants to cancel you tail people. You see me on the Instagram stories being like, hey, it's me. I want to apologize to the tailed community. My words were misinterpreted. I did not mean to hurt the tailed community. Please restrict my privacy right now while my family and I- I'm gonna log off all social media for a little while
Starting point is 00:51:21 and take a break and reflect. I want you all to know that I am meeting with leaders in the tail community and I'm educating myself on all things tail. There are a couple of people who are not happy with this joke. I wonder if there's anyone who can really genuinely wag their tail like James and Alexander? There's gotta be, there's gotta be, there's got to be. If some people can do their eyebrows, some people can pop their booties and their butt cheeks. Joelle, can you look up if anyone with a vestigial tail
Starting point is 00:51:55 can actually wag it? There's gotta be a vestigial tail wagger. And I wanna say that Joelle did come up with the truth that at the end of the semester, students say goodbye to the donors. And this person wrote, my research found that more than nine out of 10 medical schools mark this occasion
Starting point is 00:52:11 with a memorial ceremony. Ceremonies also take place at schools for other branches of healthcare, such as osteopathy and physical therapy. Wherever students learn from body donors, they gather to express their gratitude for a gift that can never be reciprocated. Well, there you go.
Starting point is 00:52:27 So, Joelle found that, it's true. While in most humans, the coccyx remains hidden inside the body where it serves as a point of muscular attachment and not much more. In rare instances, infants are born with protuberant tails extending from this structure. What is this? These tails may contain additional vertebrae and disturbingly can even wag.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Let's take a break. We'll be right back after these fine words. I'm Gary Veeder and I have a new limited series podcast called Number One Dad. It may have been the greatest scam for a sports fan. In the 90s, my dad and I ran a con for years where we snuck into the world's most prestigious arena, New York's Madison Square Garden, and I interviewed some of the biggest athletes in the world, even Michael Jordan. But this wasn't the only scheme my dad was pulling. He's posing as my attorney in a court.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Everything my dad did was a scam. There were moments where Manny would assume the role of undercover police officer. My father's never-ending string of lies ultimately broke apart my family. And at 15 years old, I completely cut him out of my life. That was 24 years ago. I have no idea where he lives or what he's up to but my goal is to track him down and get to the truth about who my father, Manny Beter,
Starting point is 00:53:56 really is. My father was involved in a case from the early 90s, and I'm just trying to get information. You better hope that your dad doesn't find out about this before you're ready to talk to him. I'm sorry. You have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Listen to Number One Dad on the iHeart Radio app

It's about screenwriting. And a journey. The three of us play aspiring screenwriters on a quest to get a hit Hollywood script to famous producer Dutch Huxley. Well, I would say one of us is aspiring and the other two are sort of struggling. Which one of us is aspiring? Well, they're gonna have to listen to the podcast. Hmm, but I don't know and I made the podcast. Well, I made the podcast and I think you guys were along for the ride. Each week we bring in a script, we read it, and then we give each other notes.
Starting point is 00:54:58 And you'll also hear about our adventures navigating the Hollywood system. The show features amazing guests like Tim Robinson, Lily Sullivan, Weird Al Yankovic, and Rob Hubel. And like any great blockbuster, it's filled with heartbreak, adventure, suspense, and just a little tasteful nudity. And some distasteful nudity. Oh yeah. Sorry about that, guys.
Starting point is 00:55:20 Listen to Get It to Dutch, a screenwriter's journey on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Happy Pride! It's time, a screenwriter's journey on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Happy Pride! It's time for a brand new podcast. Do you love weird pop culture facts? Like, I don't know, what is Tori Spelling's favorite salad? Well, then you're going to love the podcast I do with my best friend, Celebrity Book Club with Steven and Lily.
Starting point is 00:55:42 You've probably seen books at Barnes and Noble and thought, uh, those look silly. I wonder what is inside of them. We've decided, because we are grown, consenting adults, that we're going to read a book every single week. And here we are. You probably don't have time to read books. Let us do it for you. We discuss the inner workings
Starting point is 00:56:00 of the minds of these authors at great detail. From Abraham Lincoln to Lauren Graham, John Stamos to Sylvia Plath, we cover lots of celebrities' books, be they memoirs, poetry, children's books, or cookbooks. And we discuss them in nauseating detail. It's pretty academic.
Starting point is 00:56:18 It's basically literary criticism. So, get your degree, put your glasses on. And listen to Celebrity Book Club with Stephen and Lily on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your degree, put your glasses on. And listen to Celebrity Book Club with Stephen and Lily on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. -♪ We watch your whiz act and don't know. Let's continue on. Cole decides he really wants to be a surgeon.
Starting point is 00:56:39 He wants to call his practice Cole Cuts. You said, uh, Turk says that surgery is long, tedious, and boring. Like episodes, and then he says like episodes of entourage that are about turtle. I guess this must have been about- Do you remember entourage? I do remember entourage. And I think I thought turtle was very funny.
Starting point is 00:56:59 So I disagree with this joke. Did you watch entourage? This must have been the height of entourage because if we're making Entourage related jokes. Yeah, I watched Entourage. I watched Entourage a lot. I thought it was really good. I enjoyed it.
Starting point is 00:57:09 I remember looking forward to that show. I think it was just particularly because we grew up in, not we grew up, but we spent a lot of time in Hollywood and it was spoofing Hollywood, so I related to it. And I was dating Mandy at the time when she did an arc on it as she was in a movie with Adrian's character. Aquaman, is that what they did?
Starting point is 00:57:32 Was she an Aquaman? Wait, Daniel, you were a background actor in an episode of On Charge, what's that story? Yes, I was. So, okay, let's talk. Very briefly, at my sister's Jewish day school, they had a silent auction where it just looked like they were auctioning off a signed DVD,
Starting point is 00:57:48 but it was actually a signed DVD and a walk-on roll. No one else bid on it. My mom put like a hundred bucks down. And so I got to be on an episode of Entourage. It's the episode, Sorry Ari. And I am one of the junior agents right behind, can't remember the guy's name, but he's like the competing agent.
Starting point is 00:58:04 And he leans in and he goes, well, by the way, Turtle, all my assistants love to fuck. And then you see my face right next to them. Wow. Fans can go look for that. What's the name of the episode? Sorry, Ari. Episode of Sorry, Ari. Sorry, was it Scott Conn? I think so.
Starting point is 00:58:22 It was like it was like Josh Goldstein, I think, was the name of the camera. Scott Con comes in as the agent at 1.2. Yeah, something like that. Daniel, were you a fan of the show? Definitely, I love the show. Yeah, same kind of thing. I grew up around Hollywood. And so seeing all these places that I knew,
Starting point is 00:58:38 I was like, this is my hometown. And it really was, I never lived that life in Hollywood of like entourage and stuff, but it was supposedly Mark Wahlberg's experience. It was sort of showing what the life of a star like that, what it was like. What was his Aquaman? Because I remember, what was the movie that Mark Wahlberg became really famous for? Boogie Nights, right? That's it? Boogie Nights, yeah? That's it. Boogie Nights.
Starting point is 00:59:05 Yeah, that's pretty good. This is a good fucking movie, dude. That's a fucking good movie, dude. That's a great movie. I don't know what his Aquaman would be. What do you think his Aquaman would be? Or maybe they were just spoofing the idea. He has a lot of he has a lot of hits, man.
Starting point is 00:59:22 Yeah, as you did the fighter, he was kind of, the fighter was really big. Did you get the fighter? I love the fighter with him and fucking Batman. That shit was dope. With Bale, yeah. Yeah, man. All right. Well, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:59:36 Anyway, that show, I just wanted to say that show was fucking, it was a necessity for me weekly. That and Battlestar Galactica, I remember. Okay. Yeah, there it is. Lucy's trying to rally the troops to do this. Nobody cares. Drew wants no part of it.
Starting point is 00:59:55 He's dealing with the fact that there's now a hole in his dorm room between his and Denise's rooms. Because she wants to live together now. And she really wants to live together. and he's really flipping out about that. He does not want to cohabitate with her. Did you think she was fucking with him or did you think that this was something, I thought she was fucking with him
Starting point is 01:00:16 and this was something that she was, you know, planning to, you know, just to be crazy. So like, I don't know, man, it just seemed like a big switch for her. I'm so nervous about us being together like this. And now all of a sudden she's being practical. And I thought, that was weird. Look, we're together. Let's live together. We're going to have a, we're, we're, she's going to freak, you know, rent is so expensive next year.
Starting point is 01:00:40 And I thought, well, I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. I'm going to have to do this. together, let's live together. We're gonna have a, we're, we're, she's gonna freak, you know, rent is so expensive next year. You know, dating a woman and all of a sudden she's like, let's get married. Just kidding. Let's have a baby. And I'm just kidding. Oh wait, let's live together. I mean, you can understand why Drew's a little like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah, fuck yeah. But I'm saying it came out of nowhere. And also just, you know, putting a hole in a wall, breaking a hole into a wall.
Starting point is 01:01:08 That's a pretty good. The sledgehammer. I don't know. The sledgehammer to a sledgehammer to a wall is kind of a suspect move. And it's a weird way just to to to bring up the subject of moving in with with your partner is to like break a wall. She blames it on. She blames it on. She blames on moisture. And it's like bullshit moisture.
Starting point is 01:01:30 Oh, but did you know, I mean, in the episode, it's a reveal that Drew finds. Did you put together that she had done it earlier? It was very clear that she had done it. It was very clear. Well, you're smiling. What do you think? Do you think it was clear to you that she had done it? Oh immediately I think even in my notes I was like, how did she pull this like did she go upstairs? I thought she knocked the guy out upstairs
Starting point is 01:01:55 Wet the wall to figure it out, but no I was like she's trying to do something here I don't know. I didn't understand why she was doing it until later, but I knew she was definitely behind it. Yeah. Well, I thought it was funny when Drew finds that he's like, is this a sledgehammer? Yeah. I love how casual he was about it. They're my favorite couple. They're so cute. I was like, I mean, they're so fucking cute.
Starting point is 01:02:20 Yeah. Obviously, if the show had continued, it would have leaned into YouTube because you guys did have great chemistry together. It was fun. bro. It was so cute. Yeah, and obviously if the show had continued, it would have leaned into YouTube because you guys did have great chemistry together. It was fun, yeah. Yeah, I was like, that shit was so long ago and it was only one season. I don't necessarily remember all of it, guys, I'm gonna be honest with you. You can say it, Mike.
Starting point is 01:02:37 It's all right, don't worry about it. Well, no, it was a lot of adrenaline. You know, it was like, it was, you know, because we're like, again, it was like the first time that, and we were like all there together and we were kind of, this was just a new experience. So yeah, there was a lot of adrenaline kind of to it. And even though, you know, we kept our cool and everything like that. But it was wild, man. I haven't seen this stuff in forever. And watching that watching 13, it was it's crazy. It's crazy. Because I don't remember these jokes. I don't
Starting point is 01:03:02 remember some of the choices that I made. I'm kind of cringey, but sometimes I don't know. It's just, it's a, it is weird. I think you fair best. Dude, you can't judge you. I think you did all right, bro. I think you did all right. Your career after and before is pretty good, bro.
Starting point is 01:03:18 I think you fair best. And everyone's wonderful. Don't get me wrong. This is such a talented group of people. But in terms of, I think who navigated the the tone the best I think you you win and that includes me and Donald including myself just for season 9 Mike calm down just season 9 no no all right so I did laugh at one line in this whole episode when Cole says that he can't read old people clocks No, I laughed at another line. You didn't laugh at that
Starting point is 01:03:48 I did not they cut to a they cut to a standard clock and Cole who's trying to be a surgeon says I can't read old people clocks. He's perfect for surgery I laughed at she's treat. I'm treating trying to a Vietnamese new year Yeah No, you got it wrong She's treating, I'm treating Trang to a Vietnamese New Year. Yeah. He lied to Trang. No, no, you got it wrong. Trang told her that it was Vietnamese Valentine's Day
Starting point is 01:04:14 so he could get a comp meal from her. Right. And then he turns and looks at them and goes, it's not real. You're living. Right. I laughed very hard at that. That's the only thing I left out.
Starting point is 01:04:25 Twerk puts Cole through some sort of bizarre boot camp to try and talk him out of being a surgeon. He's spraying ketchup on him while he tries to get the fortune out of a fortune cookie. There's a light in his face as the drum line comes in. Turk is really going all out to make sure that Cole gives up trying to be a surgeon. He hired a drum line.
Starting point is 01:04:45 Yeah, he definitely had to pay the drum line. They come in and scrubs, though. It's like it's like what do you call it? A basic training for the military. He's trying to you try. You're like you're like Lou Gossett. Distract him. Yes. It's like you're Lou Gossett in him.
Starting point is 01:05:03 Well, no, Lou Gossett, Jr. was really trying to get them motherfuckers to quit. Quit. He was he drowned one of them. He drowned one of them. He drowned. And then he choked another one out in this movie. Like he chokes a motherfucker out.
Starting point is 01:05:20 Wonder if in the military, if you're allowed to go full Lou Gossett anymore. I don't think so maybe special forces. Yeah, navy seals. Maybe maybe special forces They had a navy seals reality. Well, this is special forces. This was to be a pilot That's not an easy job. No, of course, but but uh They had a I don't know if you ever seen it. They did like a to show how hard it is to become a seal. They showed seal training in a reality show and it was it was fucking crazy. Michael, have you ever done any military training?
Starting point is 01:05:58 Yeah, Michael, you could you look like you could play a soldier. You looked you look badass enough. Yeah, we had to do some gun stuff and like this show years ago, I went I did Generation Kill, which was a David Simon thing about the invasion of Iraq. And we went to went to Maputo Mozambique, and had to shave our heads and hang out with all of these real like one of the guys is actually in this it it became an actor, but he was a recon Marine and he was so pretty and that they just put him in front of the camera.
Starting point is 01:06:32 But yeah, some of that stuff, but yeah, some gun stuff. You guys done gun stuff and like running, like had to do all this. Have you guys ever had to do that stuff? Zach loves to shoot guns. I don't necessarily like to shoot guns. I did a movie called Going in Style that had a bunch of gun stuff in it.
Starting point is 01:06:48 So it was fun to direct that stuff. And I do enjoy going to the gun range. I think that that's fun. But I've never really done much gun stuff as an actor. I've never done much gun stuff as an actor too. I've done action, but all my action has been fists and hands and stuff like that. Not a lot of, not a lot of blaster fire or anything. Mosley, tell us about Ozark. That was fucking, you did, you did nine episodes of that. That was a great show.
Starting point is 01:07:17 Yeah, that was fun. Yeah. Um, yeah, that was, that was, it was, it was, you know, the thing about Ozark is it, it traffics and just sudden violence, like just out of nowhere, someone's head will explode and there's guts everywhere. And but then, you know, they call cut and Bateman would just be joking around and everybody be like cutting it up. I, at one point in season two, spoiler, I'm in the basement, like I think my bait, I got Laura Linney locked up, you know, or like tied her up to a chair and I'm freaking out. And Laura's like, you know, she's like,
Starting point is 01:07:51 she's like doing this long monologue and she's looking at me and they call cut and the director comes over to me and he's like, I don't think you would be smiling during this scene. And I go, what? He goes, you were just like smiling. You were just like looking at Laura Linney and smiling. And I just, I had no idea.
Starting point is 01:08:04 And I go, I think I was just looking at America's Laura Linney and she was like talking to me. And I was just like, and I forgot to like be pissed in that moment. Cause I was just so happy to be like, I was just like just staring at this person, you know? It was a fun show. That was great.
Starting point is 01:08:20 I had Jason did such a fantastic job. And, and I really thought it was excellent. I don't think anybody had ever seen a character like that before. A character from a character that was so sneaky and so conniving and so like and had a wife that was and I only know this because I watched more gangster than she was that he was yeah, but could be but still Could be so calm in any situation No matter what it was. It could be a freaking gun in his head and he'd be like, okay now listen This is why yeah, give me two seconds. He'll definitely give me two minutes. Just give me two minutes, you know
Starting point is 01:09:01 It's like that's what it was always about. He's like if you just give me like one second, you know And he would just always talk himself out of this stuff. It was a really cool character. Yeah. I don't think I've seen that before. It was a great show. All right, we're gonna take a quick break and then we'll finish up.
Starting point is 01:09:14 We'll be right back after this message from our sponsors. I'm Gary Veeder and I have a new limited series podcast called Number One Dad. It may have been the greatest scam for a sports fan. I'm Harry Veeder, and I have a new limited series podcast called Number One Dad. It may have been the greatest scam for a sports fan. In the 90s, my dad and I ran a con for years where we snuck into the world's most prestigious arena, New York's Madison Square Garden,
Starting point is 01:09:36 and I interviewed some of the biggest athletes in the world, even Michael Jordan. But this wasn't the only scheme my dad was pulling. He's posing as my attorney in a court. Everything my dad did was a scam. There were moments where Manny would assume the role of undercover police officer. My father's never-ending string of lies

Gurgle, gurgle. Okay, so Turk gets a call to do surgery on teddy bears
Starting point is 01:13:07 That doesn't go well No, it does not And then it's unfair to he freaks the kid out by making him go up against I mean you're a horrible horrible teacher Let's just say that I mean freaks the kid out like why would you? Start easy. Why am I even the only way you to be surgeon is if you can beat the chief of surgery. You're such a dickhead of a teacher. Like even if the kid's annoying, I would rather be a dickhead of a teacher than an absentee cast mate.
Starting point is 01:13:39 Zach, where were you this whole season? That cuts deep. It's the last episode. You know, on the last episode. On the last episode of the Rewatch podcast, you are really bringing in some like deep cuts of, do you wanna talk to Michael Mosley about how you felt that you weren't invited
Starting point is 01:14:00 to cast gatherings? Yeah, what the fuck, Mike? You were there. Donald is harboring some resentment. Is it because I called you Winslow? Is it because I was calling you Winslow? That was it. You didn't know my name.
Starting point is 01:14:11 I knew it. This party is for people who know my last name. Was it because you heard about the night I got drunk and fucking was walking up Laurel Canyon? That was amazing. Oh no, I didn't hear that story. You didn't want someone who was gonna get so drunk they'd walk up Laurel Canyon Boule Oh, that was amazing. Well, I know I didn't hear that story. You didn't want someone who was going to get so drunk, they'd walk up Laurel Canyon Boulevard at his party.
Starting point is 01:14:29 I was pissed. You know, we got, I, you guys partner in all seriousness, did you guys party and stuff? Because when we were, when we were the young, when we were the young, you didn't. No, we never really did. That's because, you know, we, you know, we've just gotten on the show. And my partner at the time, we just moved out to LA and we had this tiny little two bedroom.
Starting point is 01:14:50 We're like, well, you know, I'm on a show now. That's a very Hollywood thing. We start, we have like a Christmas party or whatever, and we invite people over. I'm like socially fucking clumsy as hell. And I was like on set and I was like, I don't know, and I'm like kind of talking to you. Are you guys around on Saturday? If I threw a party, would that be a thing? And you know, and you guys were like, you know, you guys were kind of intimidated. I didn't't know. And I'm like, kind of talking to you guys around on Saturday, if I threw a party, would that be a thing? And you
Starting point is 01:15:05 know, and you guys were like, you know, you guys were kind of intimidated. I didn't really know. And then all of a sudden, brav shows up. And he's like, Mosley's throwing a fucking party. And then he was and you started telling you like, did you get invited? And but no, no. And then I was like, so embarrassing. I was like, No, it wasn't like that. I was kind of just setting out feelers to see if a party was something anybody was interested in and it was
Starting point is 01:15:25 really funny and then the next day then i went and got flyers and they started handing them out and i was like did i come to the party you did come to the party you see this is what i'm talking about flyers dude everyone that's what i feel like i feel like that guy i feel like that guy right now you see that buffalo wild wings commercial well did he get four extra wings? Yeah. No, that's what I feel like right now. So Michael, you handed out flyers and I came to the party. Was Alison Janney at the party? Oh, sure. Alison Janney. No, not at all.
Starting point is 01:16:02 Oh, a little bit. I remember a party with Alison Janney. I wonder if that was your party. All right. Well, Donald, this really kind of throws a wrench in your idea of not being invited since Michael made flyers. Yeah, I think you were there that day, Donald. It was like, probably was a three-day thing, like from Wednesday to like a Friday, like a Saturday party. Like Wednesday, it was like Creeping. like a Friday like a Saturday party like Wednesday. It's like Shame yeah, it was like a coach Rented a boat. Yeah, we have Catalina. It was the whole thing. It was wine tasting It was a whole event fishing you fates of each ceviche. I see
Starting point is 01:16:41 It was like it was like Coachella we camped on his front lawn I see. It was like Coachella. We camped on his front lawn. Everybody got iPods. Everybody got iPods too. Wow. Yeah, little swag bags and everything. Okay, so getting through this episode, Ben's son Eric hated him. He doesn't want any special tribute for him. And Todd is making erotic novelty wines. They're Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and teeny weeny P. Degretio. So stupid.
Starting point is 01:17:12 But Chardonnay is funny. Somebody who ever pitched that in the writers room was like Chardonnay. I bet you if the right person made and marketed Chardonnay, it could do really, really well. What color is it? Well, the label has rainbows for sure, but it's just regular Chardonnay color, but it's just marketed by the right person. It's not a rose Chardonnay?
Starting point is 01:17:45 When I was living in Queens, in the story of Queens, there's this totally unfortunate restaurant name. It was the most unfortunate name. It was called Winegasm. I think it was the worst name for a restaurant. I was like, oh, somebody got letters and put that in big on their building and called it Winegasm.
Starting point is 01:18:04 And I was just like, oh, that's so weird. You know, there was a committee of people that had a conversation with that person and was like. Don't I don't know, dude, like winegasm, you know, I'm doing I fucking doing it. So I did laugh when when Michael, when Drew says that he had to go to 17 horse funerals. That was kind of funny.
Starting point is 01:18:30 Then Drew, this is weird. Drew asked Cox how to dive in and set aside his fears and really just let go. And then Cox, he's like, no, not another sensitive person asking me for advice. Oh, that's what it was. It was a reference to JD, the final little reference to JD, like don't be a JD. Don't fall in love. No, don't come to me with your whiny emotional sensitivity problems. As a grown up, I appreciate that. What do you mean? Come on, bro. Like, I got, everybody got issues.
Starting point is 01:19:09 Everybody got problems. You know what I mean? Yeah, but you wouldn't let, if someone came to you for advice, you would give it to them. But I don't want to. It's just like Cox. Same thing. Nobody wants to be the freaking, nobody wants to have that all unloaded on them. But we do it. We do it because we're good people.
Starting point is 01:19:27 I'm a really good pep talk giver. You come to me, you're my... Yeah, but you do it because you're a good person. You don't do it because you fucking wanna. It's like, fuck, shit, all right. I'll solve it with you then, let's go. You're not doing it because, you're not sitting there saying, hey, listen to me,
Starting point is 01:19:41 world, come to me with your shit. No. Please. It's sometimes just frustrating when the person you're giving advice to over and over again, isn't making any changes and they're just bitching. That's frustrating. But, but I feel like for people that are actually going to take action, I can give a hell of a pep talk if you need one audience. I've started a hotline.
Starting point is 01:20:03 Um, here we go. This is a mistake. This is a mistake. Call me with your problems. Hey, did you notice this? What is it? Norring? Why am I showing it to you if it's not a norring? You're a little bit pixelated, but yeah, that's awesome.
Starting point is 01:20:21 How long have you had it? Few days. It's fun, right? It's really cool with the sleep shit. I? A few days. It's fun, right? It's really cool with the sleep shit. I love the sleep shit. The sleep shit's cool. Except when you wake up and you're like,
Starting point is 01:20:31 fuck, I didn't get enough REM sleep. I get very competitive with myself. Do you? Yeah, like I want a good night's sleep. Do you 10,000 a day? You 10,000, does it track your bike? Well, in New York, it doesn't track the bike as good as it tracks steps, but in New York City, it's so easy to get 10,000 steps a it, does it track your bike? It doesn't track the bike as good as it tracks steps,
Starting point is 01:20:45 but in New York city, it's so easy to get 10,000 steps a day. You just walk around. Yeah. In LA it's harder because you gotta like, you gotta plan it, you gotta do it. You literally gotta go for a walk. Yeah, you go walk or a hike or, or, you know,
Starting point is 01:20:57 cause it's such a, you know, you gotta do it. In New York, I just, by the time you, I mean, I do go to the gym here, but also by the time you run a few errands walk around meet some friends. You'll hit it I ride my bike a lot here So I'm not sure that it tracks cycling as well as attracts steps, but I don't know but I love it Are you in the nightlife? What do you mean that was a non sequitur, but what do you mean? Are you out and about?
