Starting point is 00:00:00 How did Patrick Willis eat his steak? He would eat his steak with his hands, fingers. That's what I'm fucking... I literally tell everyone, I don't want my middle linebacker eating a steak with a fork and knife. You better pick that thing up with his hands. Absolutely, get in there.
Starting point is 00:00:16 I'm telling you guys, you can't teach this shit. The palm of his hand was his plate. Welcome to Games with Names. I'm Julian Edelman. They're Jack and Kyler, and we're on a mission to find the greatest game of all time. On today's episode, we are covering the infamous 2008 Week 8 game between the Seattle Seahawks and the San
Starting point is 00:00:42 Francisco 49ers with Super Bowl champion, Maryland great, author, actor, creative guy, Vernon Davis. And we get into talking how this game changed the outlook on football in his life. In my young mind, I'm thinking like, what's this guy doing? What's this guy think he is? But now, as I look back, that's the situation.
Starting point is 00:01:02 I needed that. How he became Hollywood actor. How was it acting with Morgan Freeman? Man, I was so nervous. Being there for Peyton Manning's last game. Never seen anything like it. I played with some awesome quarterbacks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:16 But he was just different, man. And then we get into some of the great coaching rants. Danny Green. Oh, that was a good one. White hops. They are, we thought they were. We let them off the hops. Oh that was a good one. Playoffs. They are who we thought they were. So you gotta stick around to the very end. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Games with Names is a production of iHeartRadio. October 28, 2008. The stick. Candlestick San Francisco, California. Can I play with them? Can I win with them? Can I coach with them? Can't do it. This is the Can I Play With Them game. Let's go, baby. That's awesome. I was in Boston for 13 years. That's awesome. I was in Boston for 13 years. I come out here in the off seasons.
Starting point is 00:02:11 My daughter was out here. So this is perfect for you then? Kinda. Yeah. I mean. Good to see your daughter more. Well yeah, she's here every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Like now that's great, but.
Starting point is 00:02:21 That's awesome. You know, it's just, it's. It's awesome that you have a, you know, I didn't know you had a kid either, so that's great. But that's awesome. You know, it's just it's it's it's awesome that you have it. I didn't know you had a kid either. So that's cool. Yeah, that's cool. It's been you know, it's a lot. But it's a lot. But it's like a daughter, man. I know. I know. It's so fun, though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:37 And it's it's honestly the most happy or the most excitement I get. Is when I see like something my daughter's worked on, whether it's in class, school, a presentation, or on the sport field, and seeing when she's put some work into that and her progression, and her realizing her progression through her hard work.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Like that right there gets me fucking toasty. That's awesome. Yeah, so let's start this thing up. Welcome to Games with Names. Today we are talking week eight of the 2008 season. Seahawks versus the 49ers. Legendary can't win with him game with nobody other than Vernon Davis.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Welcome to games names bro. I appreciate it. Thank you for being in the nut house in one sentence. Why did you pick this game? Because I liked the game. Because I love the game. You love the game. I love this game.
Starting point is 00:03:44 This specific game. Yeah, this specific game. I love this game. You love the game. I love this game. This specific game. Yeah, this specific game. I love this game. Why? I don't know, it's just something that's exciting. It's just like, when you think about this game, it reminds me of a lot of the competition that I had, the competition that I had against the Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:04:06 You know what I mean? It was like, man, they were that team that we just couldn't stop. I mean, those guys were, I mean, they had everybody, Camp Chancellor, Russell Wilson, I mean, they had all the players, man. I mean, just like us, we had players too, but those guys were hard to stop.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Yeah, this is a fun, this generation of the 49ers is kinda that foundational second jump from what I'm wearing, the 95-niners, because there was a long span after that where, you know, 10 years, they were bouncing from quarterback to quarterback and you did that here in this game. But this specific team and what you're a part of,
Starting point is 00:04:51 I was a fan of as a kid. And like these grindy type years were a necessity to get to where you guys eventually got when you guys were playing in Super Bowls and stuff, again. So like, this is a fun game and it's a real cool game that I think you picked because it's probably a transformational game for you mentality-wise after Coach Singletary goes out,
Starting point is 00:05:20 calls you out in front of everyone. And like, after this year, you had like, it like springboard your career. Was this that turning point in your career? You talking about just being weak, just the weak? Yeah. The weak of that game. Well, this is after this game is when he kicked you out.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Yeah. I don't know, man. It was just, I don't say, I would say that it was a, yeah, I'd say it was a turning point in my career because if you think of a young man coming into this league, I mean, you think you know, you know all the answers, but you don't until your career starts, right? Because this game, I mean, there's a lot that goes with it. You're not on a university. You're in a space where anything can happen. And the biggest thing you need to do is just work on your mental health.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Because mental health is everything. It is. And for me, I was struggling mentally and I needed something to just put me back on track. And I believe the incident with Coach Singletary was the moment where I realized that, hey, if I'm going to be a leader, it has to start now. Wow. Is this the greatest game of all time?
Starting point is 00:06:30 I don't know. That's a good question. We ask all our guests. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know about the greatest game of all time. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:41 What's life looking like these days? For me, you know, it's just I just focus on the creativity from producing films to acting, music. I recently bought a farm. Yeah. Focus on my horses. Riding horse trying to get better. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:59 But in family, man, that's that's the key. I think that's the key of life. Just doing the things that you love and the things that make you happy. Tell us about this farm. What is this farm? We were talking about it before the show. What's this farm thing you got going? Yeah, this farm is, you know, this farm,
Starting point is 00:07:15 I credit my brother for just the dreams I had before I bought this farm. Like my brother, I take you back, my brother wanted to create this space where he wanted animals walking around the house and walking outside, but he didn't have enough acres for that, but he still wanted it. And before he passed away, well, after he passed away,
Starting point is 00:07:36 I started having dreams. And one dream was that I had a farm. And I woke up, I remember waking up that morning, getting on Zillow, looking for a farm. And I caught this, a friend of mine has this company, Props for Lease and move for free. And I thought about them, I reached out to her, I said, Hey, can you, can you, can you find me a farm? Right?
Starting point is 00:07:58 She couldn't find anything. So then a friend of mine called me later, like two weeks after that and say, Hey, I found this farm, you want to go half on it? I said, no, not really. I'm not really interested right now. I was looking, but I'm good now. But I actually called Move For Free and Props. Move For Free, the company that my friend has. I said, hey, can you show me this farm? And they took me on the farm and I fell in love. I said, hey, I want it. I paid cash for it. Bought it right then and there. You got a farm.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I got a farm. And now you're a farm owner. I'm in love. I said, hey, I want it. I paid cash for it. Bought it right then and there. You got a farm. Got a farm. And now you're a farm owner. Now I'm a farmer. Farmer Vern. Let's go. Let's go. Woo hoo.
Starting point is 00:08:32 What's your favorite farm animal? My favorite farm animal. I would probably have to go with, man. I would like to say the goats or the chickens, but, or maybe the turtle, but I can't say that. I'm gonna have to go with Big Joe. I just bought Big Joe, big horse. Big Joe.
Starting point is 00:08:47 What kind of horse are we talking? Oh, man, he's a Belgian. Belgian? Yeah, he's a Belgian. I think I would have to go with the horse, too. My daughter loves horses and we went out to Hawaii. And my agent set us up with this awesome place where you get to ride the horses on the beach.
Starting point is 00:09:04 And you really do get a connection with that animal when you're on it. My agent set us up with this awesome place where you get to ride the horses on the beach and You really do get a connection with that animal when you're on it You know what I mean? You got this big stud thing that you're on because I was on a big ass horse I don't know what is I'm a horse guy. I got on this thing I was like I didn't want to show it no fury thing, but I was sitting there I just got on him. I was like, yeah, I feel him, I feel him. That's a connection, it's a good connection. It's a connection, right. So, you grew up in Dumb, you grew up in D.C.?
Starting point is 00:09:36 I grew up in Washington, D.C., went to Dunbar. You went to Dunbar? Yeah. Josh Cribbs, my Kent State alum went to Dunbar. That's right, that's right. Well, man, how was that? What was in that water? Because a lot of we had a lot of good, really good football players come out of there.
Starting point is 00:09:50 Yeah. How was Josh too in high school? Oh, Kent State. Out of Dunbar or Kent State? Out of Dunbar. I felt like in that area, we had a lot of Dunbar guys that went to Kent State. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Darrell Dowry. Darrell Dowry. Bar receiver. Yeah. Yeah, I played with him as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Man, there was a lot of DC cats that went to our school. I actually took a visit there myself.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Did you? Unofficial, but I took a visit. To Kent? Kent State. You shoulda came, bro. I know, man. I don't, I just, it was something about Maryland. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:10:20 Yeah. You know, I just wanted to stay close to home and. It's a way better Football and academics to Maryland's pretty damn nice Yeah, that was pretty nice. Yeah now they are. Yeah, now that they're big ten. Yeah easy man What's up with that? How do you feel about that the whole? They're in the big ten now. That's kind of weird, isn't it? Yeah, it is weird. I think it's good. I'm an ACC guy.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Yeah. Amen. But it is kind of weird that they're Big Ten now. But hey, look, I appreciate it. Anything that's gonna help the team win, I'm all about it, as well as at a father's school. And they've done that. I mean, the school's beautiful now.
Starting point is 00:11:00 And you're probably gonna get better recruits because you're in the Big Ten. Right, the facilities and just everything that they're... Money. Yeah, the money. That's what it comes down to. Money. The bottom line.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Right. Right. What was Cribs like in high school? Cribs was... He's a badass. He was very... he was quiet. Quiet. Yeah, he was a little quiet.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Did he say young? Preserved. Hey young, what's up young? Hey young, what's up? Hey young, come on Joe. Yeah. He always say Young, hey Young. Reserved. Hey Young, what's up Young? Hey Young, what's up, hey Young, come on Joe.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Yeah. Yeah. I remember him always saying, hey Young. That is so funny man. Hey Young, what's up Young. Oh man, what year were you when he was there? I was gone, he was there, I got there two years after he left,
Starting point is 00:11:38 but he was a legend there and he was in Cleveland. And Cleveland was right next to Kent. So he would come back to school every once in a while and stuff, and he was like a, and Cleveland was right next to Kent. So he would come back to school every once in a while and stuff, and he was like a fucking god out there. He was all inside of buildings and shit in Cleveland. He was the man. Man, that's crazy.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And I was following, because I was the second quarterback after him when he left. And there was always comparisons. I was running quarterback, and Josh Cribbs was fucking Josh Cribbs doing what he was doing in the league. So, you know, I always loved Cribbs. Yeah, Cribbs. Cribbs to the crib. Cribbs to the crib. Cribbs to the crib.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Faster than what you think. Oh, yeah. Way faster than you think. He was like that in high school, man. He was like that in high school. He was. Now, playmaker. You must have been a beast in high school because you were an athletic specimen. And I remember as, cause you, you know, I was a Niners fan when they drafted you.
Starting point is 00:12:34 You know, you had a huge spike in your, cause of your combine numbers. You would, you were on four, three, you jumped out the roof. You were 255 or something. You were just a freaking freak. And then your first few years, you were 255 or something, you were just a freaking freak. And then your first few years, you were kind of feeling it out,
Starting point is 00:12:50 and then you became like, you became like pretty much a wide receiver. Like you'd be in, but you were so athletic and such a dominant force in the pass game. I remember Alex Smith widening you out. You'd be a tight end on an island outside against corners running go routes, running by people. Like, were you like this in high school
Starting point is 00:13:15 or did you work for this? Are you just a specimen? What is your, how did, would you train? What the hell, what's going on? I said, how did you train? No, man, I was, I was always able to run. That was my bread and butter, being able to run. Fast.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Fast, I've always been fast. But what happened was when I got to college, I was able to keep my speed. My speed never left. It was like I got bigger, 250 pounds, still running a 4.4, 4.3. It was the craziest thing. I mean, it was like I got bigger, 250 pounds, still running a 4443. It was the craziest thing. I mean, it even it even amazed me.
Starting point is 00:13:49 I didn't I'm like, wow, because I figured, you know, as you get bigger, you lose, you lose speed. Yeah. But I was able to keep my speed and and it was I was all it's always a great asset. And I just remember you running by guys and you'd have 50 to 60 yard touchdowns at least once every two weeks It was fucking gnarly and you and cap had a run. I mean you guys went to the super. You guys always want a Super Bowl um What do you do now? Do you to keep staying in shape now? I don't live I don't live heavyweight. I tell you that Yeah, I can't I can't live the heavy weight. My shoulders a little banged up,
Starting point is 00:14:25 but I work out five days a week. Yeah. You know, lightweight, you know, still, I sprint every now and then, but I just maintain a good working, just good working habits. Movement. Yeah, movement, just staying nice and loose,
Starting point is 00:14:43 stretching and massages. I still get the massages twice a week. See, I gotta get back in it. Oh, you, stretching and massages. I still get the massages twice a week. See, I gotta get back in it. Oh, you don't get massages anymore? You know what? Oh, man. I know, it's so stupid because you go from like a Kobe beef like cow where you're massaged
Starting point is 00:14:58 every two minutes, you go work out, you have perfect hydration, you eating like a fucking king, you got the best gasoline, you know what I mean, like that? Everything's dietitian to what, get you the best. And then when you retire, you lose four of those things and that's a lot. You know what I mean? You don't have the diet the same,
Starting point is 00:15:17 you don't get the body work, you're not running out, you don't do the stretch. So I gotta get back on it. Yeah, yeah, it's tough, it's tough. Especially when you, like us right now, we're not playing ball and so many other things that. Your bodies, like our bodies aren't our, they're not our number one source of income now.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Yeah, yeah, you're right. You know what I mean? So it's not my, when I was playing, everything was predicated towards my recovery, my body, because that was my moneymaker, and that's what was providing for my family. Now, like, it's not, like, now I have fucking meetings I gotta do because I'm doing podcasts.
Starting point is 00:15:51 You know what I mean? You got other things that I used to say no to because I had to get my body work in. Yeah, I know what you mean. I can feel that. That clock just, that alarm goes off in my mind, though. Whenever I'm just, whenever I'm sitting back and I know I haven't been to the gym, because get moments where you know I'm working I haven't been to the gym in
Starting point is 00:16:09 four or five days yeah alarm goes off like man I gotta get back in the gym gotta get back gotta get back. Holden let me jump in real quick I've got a question for you Vernon before we move on from that combine it was a pretty kind of viral moment before viral moments were really happening when you ran that 4-3 in the combine Can you talk a little bit about what it was like in Indianapolis and then what kind of opportunities happened or things happened in between the draft and the combine? So yeah, going from, while I left Arizona,
Starting point is 00:16:36 I was training in Arizona for the combine and athletes performance is where it was. Between that time and going to the draft, it was, man, it was like, I just kept hearing that song by Eminem, "'You Only Get One Shot,' "'You Not Miss Your Chance' to, you know, "'Opportunities Come Once In A Lifetime.'"
Starting point is 00:16:56 That song just kept going off inside my mind. Then when I got to the combine, I started listening to that song. And I just, I knew I was only gonna get one shot. And if I didn't capitalize on it, that was it. Because being at Maryland, you know, I wasn't, yeah, I was up for the Mackie every week and things of that nature, but they didn't talk about me much. It was always Mercedes Lewis, Mercedes Lewis. He was, you know, he was the big shot when it came to the tight end position.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Yeah. And I knew that I had to go to this combine and I had to outperform everyone. And I did. And in between that time, after I had my performance and getting drafted, there was my agent was coming up to me. He's like, you got a shot. You got a chance to get drafted in the top 10. Top 10 is always top 10.
Starting point is 00:17:44 But I would go to these meetings and I started meeting with these teams. You meet with the teams and things of that nature. And I met with the Jets and I knew they had the fourth pick. They had the fourth pick in the draft. I said, I'm about to be top four. And they loved me. I mean, we sat there, we watched film, and they were talking about how they were gonna utilize me
Starting point is 00:18:05 at the position. I just knew they were gonna take me. Who'd they take? The Bricashaw Ferguson. The Bricashaw Ferguson. Not a bad pick. I put my head on the table and said, oh my God. You wanted to be in the Big Apple?
Starting point is 00:18:17 You wanted to be in the Big Apple. I wanted to be in the Big Apple. Yeah. You make it here, you can make it anywhere. Oh man, you make it here, you can make it anywhere. If you, you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. If you went on the Jets, you could win anywhere. I mean, the Rick and Shaw Ferguson was playing a very, he was a really good football player for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:18:32 That's right. So like they didn't miss miss on like knocking, cause he was a cornerstone of that organization for a while. He was good. Even at UVA, he was very talented. You could have Vernon Davis. Yeah, Vernon. You imagine Broadway Vern.
Starting point is 00:18:49 Freakin' Jets. Broadway Vern. Broadway Vern got a nice ring to it. You got Broadway Vern over here, man. I like that. Oh man. Yeah, but you wouldn't have those division rivals against the Seattle Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And you wouldn't, I'm in the same club getting that hit from Kam Chancellor. How about that hit? Oh man, I can still feel it. I can still feel it. Can you still feel it? Oh, you said I just turned my head. I felt that explosion before.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Ooh, wait, Legion of Boom. Legion of Boom. Man, I think he can hit. Yeah, he can hit. He hit you? Physical. Physical? Very physical. can hit. Yeah, he can hit. He hit you? Physical. Physical?
Starting point is 00:19:26 Very physical. And smart. Yeah. He was like, he reminded me a lot of Patrick Willis. I mean, like, I mean, when I think of Camp Chancellor, I think about Patrick Willis. Yeah. I mean, those guys are just physical.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Physical? Physical. What about, I remember when we played them in the Super Bowl and I've only competed against him a few times, but I just remember him always being a pretty respectable gentleman on the field. He'd whoop your ass and he'd let you know, but he wouldn't talk shit about it.
Starting point is 00:19:56 He was polite with it. He's like, good rep, young fella. You know what I mean? Do you remember that about Cam? Or? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was very polite. He was never talked.
Starting point is 00:20:09 He was very just like focused, locked in. Focused. Possessed. I mean, I can only imagine how much force was in between you and him. Because I remember hitting him and if he felt like a stumped tree, like he didn't move, like I had to go get the force on him. And like you are a fucking, I just, I would never wanna be in between that.
Starting point is 00:20:29 Yeah. You might get crushed. What about, how about Patrick Willis? Patrick was, he was one of those type of guys. So he talk if he needed to. Yeah. But he was kind of like one of those guys, he's always locked in.
Starting point is 00:20:43 He was on a mission. He was always, one thing I knew for sure is that when it came to game day and it's time to play, Patrick Willis was one of those guys that was gonna bring it. You didn't have to worry about him. Now, how did Patrick Willis eat his steak? He would eat his steak with his hands, fingers.
Starting point is 00:21:00 That's what I'm fucking. I think I remember Patrick. I remember going into that. Hey, you's what I'm fucking. I think I remember. I remember going into that. Hey, you see what I, I literally tell everyone, I don't want my middle linebacker eating a fucking steak with a fork and knife. You better pick that thing up with his hands. Absolutely, get in there.
Starting point is 00:21:18 That was not even, I'm telling you guys, you can't teach this shit. That's right, baby. That just justified me forever. I'm so excited. All right, let's move on to the next segment. That was unbelievable, Renny. Please, more about Patrick Willis.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Oh yeah, Patrick. Please. Just finish your thought. Oh my God. The palm of his hand was his plate. He didn't even barbecue, he ate it raw. That way he won over here. Now we'll be right back after this quick break. Jamison would like to welcome you aboard this flight to Dublin and to invite you to join
Starting point is 00:21:57 their unofficial call to bring pro football to Ireland. Stow away foam fingers in the overhead compartments. And a bar cart stocked with Jameson's finest whiskey will be making its way down the aisle after takeoff. Because only Jameson would try to bring football to a whole new country. Join the Jameson huddle at jamisonsports.com. Let's go back to around October 28, 2008. This is a segment where we'd like to talk about pop culture
Starting point is 00:22:37 around the game and the number one movie was High School Musical 3, senior year. This 2008, huh? Big year for Efron, baby. I don't remember that. Did you watch those, the High School Musicals? Yeah, I had my family, my sister and my cousin, they used to watch all those musicals, man.
Starting point is 00:22:59 I know, I gotta. Oh my goodness. My kid doesn't like musicals that much. She's starting to get into a little, number one song, Womanizer by Britney Spears. Do you listen to Brit? I like, yeah, I used to listen to Brit.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Yeah. Yeah, Brit, pretty popular back then. I'm getting a lot of her too now because my daughter, like, she's seven and like, she likes Britney Spears. She like Britney Spears' name? Yeah, because I, you know, her mom used to probably listen to Britney. You know, my mom used to, my mom, my sister will throw Britney all around her. So it's, you know, it's these little kids, they like Britney.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Britney got the staying power. She got staying power. Shout out. Huh? Free Britney, baby. Is she free? She's free. Is she is she free? She's free. Yeah. Is she free? Oh, I'm just repping it still. I'm still still repping it, though.
Starting point is 00:23:50 She just got married. That sounds familiar. Let me look. Yeah. T.I. coming off back to back. Number one's whatever you like. Live your life featuring Rihanna. That was some.
Starting point is 00:24:02 This was like this was my college right here. That was college. T.I. was on a heater, bro. He was on a heater. T.I. versus T.I.P. was the year before this. Paper trail was this year, man. It was, he couldn't miss. And this was when Rihanna was, she was just, she's just coming around.
Starting point is 00:24:17 She was still like doing features. Yeah, she was still coming up. She was still featuring. She wasn't, she was like, who's this new chick that's like about to blow up? She wasn't a billionaire yet. She wasn't like about to blow up. She won a billionaire yet She won a she's a billionaire. She's a billionaire with that Fenty the makeup makeup crazy, bro And that's what that's what the Kardashians there in that makeup stuff to that. They're smart
Starting point is 00:24:36 You might need to start some makeup lines or something. Oh, yeah, I need to get a makeup Madonna and a rod were, or there were rumors sweeping the nation. Remember this? When they were throwing Madonna pictures? You know, I don't know why we're bringing this up. This is a, you know, this is a coworker of mine at Fox. That's right.
Starting point is 00:24:58 I gotta talk to the producers on this one. Well, hold on, it's just so we can have a point that fans were taunting them, so we can ask the question, what was the wildest thing a fan ever said to you? What was the wildest thing fans ever said to you? The wildest thing? Wildest.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Can I say anything, Wynne? You can say anything. Can you fuck my wife? Can you eff my wife? Wow. Wow. Wow. I looked down and said, no sir. I don't get involved with that kind of stuff. What city?
Starting point is 00:25:33 I don't get involved with that kind of stuff. Wait, wait, was this in San Fran? This was in San Fran. Wow. Home game. Home game. This was home town. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:41 That was crazy. Wow. I remember that. I vividly remember that. That's something that will never leave my memory The crowd and it's coming out of a crowd or was it like a one-on-one kind of conversation You just read just I was we were going, you know There was a it was training camp and then we have the fans come in to to camp and you know, I'm coming in I'm walking down signing autographs. It's got
Starting point is 00:26:12 Can you oh my That's like a like a week 10 type question pre preseason question man Those are real fans that are going the real fans are going to those pre-season, or the training camp practice. That's right, you sitting on those metal bleachers. That wasn't right, man. That wasn't right. Did you listen to T.I.? You can have whatever you like.
Starting point is 00:26:35 I said you can have it. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song.
Starting point is 00:26:42 That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was a good song. That was the one right there. That was the one. Oh, 2008 was also Love in this Club, Usher and Young Jeezy, another good one. Atlanta was up this year. Atlanta, man.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Did you listen to music before? Oh yeah. What was in the head? You know what, man? I got to the point where I started listening to like, at first, I'm again, I would listen to like crunk music. I was listening to Lil Jon and you know what I mean? And just like, man, just all the hardcore, just hype music,
Starting point is 00:27:15 just getting turned up. And then as I got older, I started listening to jazz and things like that. Same. Yeah, yeah, jazz music, just slow music, just to relax my mind. Cause I felt that the more calm I was and relaxed I was, I can go out and just be more,
Starting point is 00:27:31 I can go out and be more effective. Yeah. You know what I mean? I do. Especially at year 14, at 13 and 14, it was like, yeah. Yeah, I remember I used to listen to movie music. So like Hans Zimmer. Nice. And like you'd listen to movie music. So like Hans Zimmer. Nice.
Starting point is 00:27:46 And like you'd listen to like the Inception or the Interstellar soundtrack. And like I liked that kind of music because it was like low key but it allowed me to visualize my game plan. I didn't want lyrics. I wanted to think, but I wanted something to help me think.
Starting point is 00:28:05 So that's what I, like I like the calm music too because you get too hyped up, you know, you don't wanna blow your load. First, first, first drive. You got this thing, this ain't a sprint, this a marathon. You know what I mean? You know the calmer you are, the higher, the better you can get through the highs and the lows.
Starting point is 00:28:23 You know what I mean? Absolutely. Saw Five, Zack and Mary make a porno, Secret Life's a B, what are all, everyone's making movies of crazy stories. You watching that Hulu's Patriots, what is it called? Aaron Hernandez. The Aaron Hernandez one?
Starting point is 00:28:42 Is that Netflix or Hulu? Is that Hulu? It's Hulu. Yeah, or I think that's Hulu. Really? Yeah, the drama one. You watch that? No, I haven't gotten into that yet.
Starting point is 00:28:50 I don't even know if I wanna watch it, man. I just, I put that behind me. You know what I mean? I'm with you. You play with the guy, I know the guy. I played against him. But it's just one of those things, it's like, man, it's tough.
Starting point is 00:29:03 It is. Tough situation. I'm with it, but there's been some really funny clips that come out like all like the behind the scenes shows because they have people that are acting as like there's a guy that acting as Gronk in the show. There's a guy that's acting as Belichick in the show. They had some little white dude looking athletic as fuck playing me. You know, like so they have Noodle. They have all these guys.
Starting point is 00:29:27 That's hilarious. I got to go watch it now. Let me go check it out. I got to see the clip. She's got you can see the clips on social. This is funny. But who would play you guys? Those those 2000 late 2000 Super Bowl Niners. Who would play you in one of those shows? Actor.
Starting point is 00:29:46 I don't know, who would play me? Man, they might have Morris Chesson up playing me or something. I don't know. Heck yes. I don't know, man. You can play yourself. Always a good one. Yeah, that would be interesting.
Starting point is 00:29:58 You act, you can play yourself. You haven't aged. You know what? Oh, thank you, I appreciate that. Dude looks young as fuck. Maybe I could play myself. Talk to us about your acting career. Like, this is really cool.
Starting point is 00:30:13 You take a lot of pride in it. You got a movie, Plan B, coming out. You were talking about your other movie that- Please Don't Feed the Children. Please Don't Feed the Children, that was at what? I made it to the film festival. Yeah, how was that? It was great, man.
Starting point is 00:30:29 It was awesome. We had a lot of good feedback. It was pretty cool getting out of the car and no one knew me from football. They just had my pictures from my headshots printed out. It's like, Vernon, Vernon, can you sign? I mean, some of them didn't speak English. People from all around the world who love horror movies.
Starting point is 00:30:45 It was dope. I thought that was, I was like, man, this is amazing. That's gotta be amazing on your part because you've done such a great job in your football career to where you're doing something else and people are recognizing you for that. That's very inspirational for all the other guys in the leagues.
Starting point is 00:31:05 That's pretty cool, man. Now, how's the transition from, how'd that transition go from football to what you're doing now? There's a lot of correlation between football and anything in the creative space, whether it's music, acting, dancing, whatever it is. It's the preparation.
Starting point is 00:31:24 The preparation is the biggest part. And I tell this story and I believe I talk about this in my book, but I tell the story about the things that I did before game day. Yeah. Catching, getting on the jug machine and, you know, standing in front of that machine and those balls, you know how that machine, those balls are coming out fast
Starting point is 00:31:41 and I would catch 200 of those balls after every practice consistently. And what I do now is before I go in front of a camera and I might get a month, three weeks, but I'm making sure that I'm super prepared before I step in front of that camera just like game day. And that's the preparation that goes into it. You should be able to do anything that director tell you to do. You should be able to do it because you're well prepared. Yeah. What's your dream role? My dream role is to play a superhero.
Starting point is 00:32:09 Maybe I can be the next Thor. I can be the next Thor. My name is Thor. How are you? Hell yeah. So you wanna be in a Marvel movie? I would love to be in a Marvel movie. Oh, that'd be awesome.
Starting point is 00:32:21 That'd be awesome. Are you a big comic, you a comic kid? Oh yeah, I love comic. I've always been in comics. I used to draw my favorite characters, cartoon with his cartoon characters. Who's your favorite character? Wait, character, just cartoon?
Starting point is 00:32:33 Marvel. Marvel? I'm gonna have to go with Ant-Man. He's a Marvel guy, right? Yeah. Ant-Man, he's a new character. Paul Rudd. Yeah, I like him.
Starting point is 00:32:42 I like Ant-Man. I'm kind of like one of those guys. I like the new characters. You know what I mean? I like those new guys. Cause I mean, we can easily go with some of the older characters, but the new characters are like, I feel like they're going to be around for years to come.
Starting point is 00:33:00 You know what I mean? We had like a lot of the characters like Superman, Batman and all that. I was always a DC kid. Oh really? I loved Batman, Bruce Wayne. I was also a Ninja Turtle kid. I liked Ninja Turtles.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Nice, oh I loved Ninja Turtles too. I knew DC or Marvel. Anything that has to do with like a superhero, I wanna be a part of that. I think that would be really cool, man. Spider-Man was always cool. That'd be dope. Man, how was it acting with Morgan Freeman?
Starting point is 00:33:25 That was- That's gotta be legendary. That was amazing, man. That was- What'd you take from his professional, like in the profession, like when, cause you guys are working, like, you know, you're kind of, did you feel like a rookie in front of a vet?
Starting point is 00:33:38 Man, I was so nervous. I mean, like I'm about to work. Like, first of all, I don't even know how I got the role as a serial killer, right? I'm like, man, how did I get this role as a serial killer? That's a tough job, man. Because you have to play a serial killer, especially someone like that.
Starting point is 00:33:57 I mean, this character's from South Africa. He's harvesting body parts, you know? And he's selling it to corporate America. There's guys who want to feel like they want to be powerful. Right? They go to this guy, this character named Randoku. So I'm like, man, how am I, what am I going to do to separate myself and just, you know,
Starting point is 00:34:17 the show that I did the work. That's what they say in acting, do the work, right? The work is what we just talked about being prepared. And there's a lot of different things that go into creating this character. I mean, you got the backstory, the paraphrasing, the emotional attachments that go to these lines. And every line is different. You know, you wanna feel the emotion behind,
Starting point is 00:34:36 put the emotion behind those words. The words really mean nothing without the emotion. So I learned the actual language. You know, as players, that's what we do. What language? Zulu. I got on Instagram. I found this girl who lived in South Africa
Starting point is 00:34:53 and she taught me over WhatsApp. Wow. Yeah. So Morgan didn't know I learned it because he didn't learn anything. Yeah. But I learned it and the scene that we had, I turned around.
Starting point is 00:35:04 Did you have an accent? Yeah, I had an accent in everything. I had an accent, I had learned the language, we had. Did you have an accent? Yeah, I had an accent in everything. I had an accent, I had learned the language, everything. Did you work with an accent coach? Yep, yep, I had a dialect coach. That's tight. That's putting in the work. It's putting in the work.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Putting in the work, and as football players, that's what we do, we put in the work. Yeah. So I mean, that's so, I felt like, you know, I had one opportunity to show that I could do this and that's what I did. You know, I put the work in, man, just did it. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:35:29 And how was Morgan Freeman just being in the same? He was awesome, man. He, I had a scene with him where I had to turn around and walk up to him and I just kind of dropped the knife like this, but he looked at me, he said, you know what, everything's subtle. Just, hey, here, try this. Look at the knife and then look at me, then let it go.
Starting point is 00:35:51 He said, try that. It was a slight little change and I did it. It was a great choice. Gee, bro. Pro. Pro. Yeah, it was a great choice. I mean, my, you know what, no choice is, every choice you make is gonna be good,
Starting point is 00:36:06 but there's choices that you make, and you be like, wow. As a director, someone who's in the film industry, they can look at it and be like, wow, that was a great choice. You know, there's choices. You get a chance to make choices. And all those choices are to determine one thing,
Starting point is 00:36:24 truths or lies? Exactly. Can you believe, is this happening? This is real, this is fucking real. Nah, I don't believe it. I've not ate it. Suspension of disbelief. Yeah, that's fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:36:43 I've done a little bit of acting here and there and I work with a coach and it's a very, it's a very, very skillful technique and it's very hard, you know. You gotta be able to really open up and the lines, you gotta remember the fucking lines, lines. You gotta get to a point where you know the, yeah, it's a lot.
Starting point is 00:37:07 What's one teammate of yours that would be, you're like, yeah, he could act? Through the years. I'm gonna have to say A.J. Francis when I was at the Commandos. He's with, he's doing wrestling now. Oh wow. He's always, he had a big personality.
Starting point is 00:37:23 I knew he could be an actor if he wanted to be. Yeah. Who else? Maybe, he's probably one guy that really stands out. Joe Staley. Oh yeah. He could be an actor. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Yeah, he could be an actor. He was always dynamic behind the camera. Wow. Now, let's go back in the sports world. 2008, 2009, Super Bowl champs, Pittsburgh Steelers. Ooh, that was a San Antonio home's catch toe tap. Ooh, I remember that. Hey, can we cut to Harrison?
Starting point is 00:37:54 James Harrison, we had, he, man. That run back. Kent State alum. Shout out. NFL MVP was Peyton Manning. You played with Peyton. Yeah. How was that? You won a Super Bowl with him. Peyton Manning. You played with Peyton. How was that? You won a Super Bowl with him.
Starting point is 00:38:06 Peyton was awesome. Yeah, what was the biggest difference between Peyton and all the other quarterbacks you played with? The one thing that stood out with Peyton was that when I was sitting in that meeting for the first time, and I mean, he just kind of just took over the room. Normally you have the OC, offensive coordinator, you know, install the plays, go over everything.
Starting point is 00:38:30 But Payton was the one who stood up like a general. That was pretty phenomenal to me. I've never seen anything like it. And I played with some awesome quarterbacks, but he was just different, man. He was just different. Was he going over, like, was he giving coaching points to the line, like, all right, guys, on this oaky front,
Starting point is 00:38:52 we're gonna slide you guys this way. Hey, receivers, if these two guys come, you know I need you to break a hot rock. Is he breaking down play for play? He was probably, there was probably a correlation between him and Tom. Everything Tom did, you probably see the same thing in P. Yeah. I mean, if you look at their careers and who they how they their longevity,
Starting point is 00:39:14 everything that they stood for and just their records, everything that they did from all the accolades, they are identical. They're just pro quarter. They're they're pro quarterbacks. It's just different. It's different different, it's just different, man. Everybody's different, man. We'll never see another Michael Jordan. It's gonna be years before we see that. It's gonna be years before we see Tom Brady
Starting point is 00:39:34 and Peyton Manning. That's just who they are. Yeah, the prep and the mentality and the killer instinct, the people skills of leadership, there's a lot that goes into it. These guys are tough, man. Yeah. They probably, people, I think people might,
Starting point is 00:39:56 when they look at a team and they look at the game, they might say, oh, oh, oh, okay. Well, I'm gonna go to defense maybe. Maybe, you know, Patrick Willis is the toughest guy on the field, maybe it's Vaughn Miller. They're gonna pick those guys, but they don't know. They don't, they're not out there. They don't see what's going on, but those quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:40:15 guys like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, those guys, you can talk to them if you want. They're tough. They're just as tough as that guy on defense. Yeah, without a doubt. And it's not just the physical toughness, it's the mental toughness. It's the mental. Inside of here. They know exactly what they're about to do before they even walk out on the field.
Starting point is 00:40:33 I love that. It's a thing called visualization. And some of the greatest players like yourself, we know exactly what that is. We see everything that we're doing before it even happens. We manifest that 150 to 170 yard game that we're about to go have. Manifest. You know, it's so repetitive and it goes into the prep process for the football player, at least for me.
Starting point is 00:40:57 You do the drill that translates to the team, the team that translates to this, and you do it so many times and you study it on film, by the time you do it in the game, it's deja vu. Exactly. You've already done it. See, that's the difference between great, being great and being good.
Starting point is 00:41:11 The good players, they don't know how to manifest it. They don't know how to visualize. But the great players, they know the essence of visualization. That's what they know. They see it before. That's why the game is so slow. Man, you ever had a, there's been a game,
Starting point is 00:41:23 you can probably attest to this. We've all been the great players. You know, I'm not calling my, I don't like to talk about myself, but the game is so slow, it feels like you can run around the whole field and everybody's still standing still. Everything, every catch, every play.
Starting point is 00:41:38 I mean, I would have games where I go to the coach, I say, coach, throw me the ball, they cannot stop me. And I really mean it from deep down inside because the game is so slow to me. It's like everybody's moving in slow motion. I'm moving so fast. I can catch, I can do the biggest games that I've had, the 180 yards, two touchdowns, those games are the games that were really slow to me.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Yeah, you were in the zone. The zone. I've felt that a few times. I've felt periods of it throughout a game. There's only been maybe two games and one was in the Super Bowl against the Rams or I was in the zone where everything you did worked. And you know that the biggest,
Starting point is 00:42:14 and every time that you didn't feel it, you just didn't, your mind didn't tap into the space to let you know that that's what was going on. It was there. It was there. But you just couldn't, it takes a certain moment or a certain time for you to really like, I don't know what it is. Like you said to me, I've only felt it three,
Starting point is 00:42:31 two to three times in my whole career, but you've been there. For a whole game. You can't get there unless you're in that state. You can't have those types of performances unless you're in that state. But it's something that's letting you know, it's opening up your mind and say,
Starting point is 00:42:44 this is what's happening right now. This is what's happening. It's an amazing feeling. It is, it is. It's like that scene in Caddyshack where it's raining, the guys played his best game of golf ever. He ain't letting that thing go. There's light and he's gonna get struck.
Starting point is 00:43:02 It doesn't matter. You have it, it's just going right. It's just going right. Man, how about Tom Brady got injured this season opener. That's when he tore his ACL, got a rule in place for him. A lot of the quarterback injury or the quarterback rules rough in the passer is probably because of that injury. Gerard, Mayo won defenseensor Rookie of the Year.
Starting point is 00:43:25 You watching football at all right now? Yeah, a little bit. What do you think, you hear what Mayo said? What did he say? He called the team soft. That's crazy. Yeah, but it was, I think he was including himself when he said it because in that building
Starting point is 00:43:44 they've been preaching for years. You got to be a tough team, you got to run the ball, you got to stop the run, you got to cover kicks. They gave up a boatload of yards and run game that game. They couldn't run the ball and they gave up a punt return for a touchdown. So I think he was trying to put a spark on the team. OK, you know, well, see, that's one thing I had to say, I applaud him for that. And if he's putting himself in that category,
Starting point is 00:44:07 it's always we is never you or them or, if it's us, the way you change your words is huge, man. You know what I mean? It's not what you say, it's how you say it. So if he was, if it was, if his intentions were in that direction, I would I was I would applaud him. Yeah I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. I play with the music good, dude. I think he's just You know, they've been preaching a lot of shit in there and things are going south
Starting point is 00:44:38 South right now. They're banged up everywhere. It's tough to lose How is it like you've been on some of those teams early in your career with the Niners. How is, how do you, how do you, as a player, if you're getting your ass beat every week, how do you keep your mindset? Like, how do you keep your sense, sanity? I think it's extremely hard, especially when you're losing and you can go, it can be three, four years of just losing.
Starting point is 00:45:06 I mean, you just get tired of it. It's like, you're tired of it. But that's when you have to understand that everyone feels that way. How can I be a leader and get my message across to these guys in a way that they can step their game up or just come together and just play as one? Because that's when things go south
Starting point is 00:45:25 when you're not playing as one. I think a lot of people also, you gotta focus on just improving. Whatever you did last game, say you did something five things wrong, let's try to get it to two things wrong. And then maybe get it to nothing wrong on an ME. And we all just kind of, and then you start getting
Starting point is 00:45:48 to win a play. I think that's what, it's the hardest thing to do ever is when you're in a rut and you gotta get out. But I just always remember, you know, Belichick saying, guys, we just, after a big loss or, you know, maybe a two game slide, which we had very few, but I remember him, he'd always say, we just gotta stack today with tomorrow. And then tomorrow with the next day.
Starting point is 00:46:13 You know, and then it'll compound if you're improving. Now what is it? You're right, and that's how, my coach came to me one day in practice, he said, you can't allow, you're not allowed to have a bad practice. He it. You're not allowed to have a bad practice. He said, you can't, you're not allowed to have a bad practice. I said, well, coach, I just, I mean, I dropped the ball.
Starting point is 00:46:29 He's like, you look, you see, you're not allowed to have a bad practice. I set the bar high. And you like you say, you got to compound. You got to build on it. You got to keep stacking. And the biggest, the greatest players, what they do is that they take those notes.
Starting point is 00:46:42 They write down everything. They write them down and they keep those notes and they make a list of everything they need to get better and they focus on it. They meditate on those things. And that's what you have to do if you're gonna get better. And if you care anything, you'll do that. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:46:54 You remember going to the meetings, you're gonna have your notebook open and coaches, good coaches, they're gonna address that. Yeah, without a doubt. And I think a lot of guys don't know how to get better. They think that working hard is getting better. Yeah. It's working smart.
Starting point is 00:47:13 It's finding a coach. What was the coach that said that to you? Jim Hossler. Jim Hossler. Yeah, he was an offensive coordinator at the time. He was an offensive quarterback coach, an offensive coordinator. He's promoted.
Starting point is 00:47:25 Yeah. So like, to improve, you need to find out what you need to improve on. Now, whether that's from a teammate, a mentor, a coach, find the things you work hard, need to work on. You work hard at that, and that's how you improve. It's not just, some guys just don't know how to work hard because they think if you're gonna go,
Starting point is 00:47:44 go into the weight room and lift a bunch and wake up early to go run a little extra, how you improve. It's not just, some guys just don't know how to work hard because they think if you're gonna go, go into the weight room and lift a bunch and wake up early to go run a little extra, maybe that's not what you're trying, that's not what you need to get better. Maybe you need to get in the film room and be able to decipher a single high safety from two safeties.
Starting point is 00:48:00 You gotta find out what you need to work on, work hard at that, and that's when improvement happens. And that's crazy. You know why that's crazy? I say that? We're talking about professional athletes. Premier, the top, the highest you can go. And you don't know that?
Starting point is 00:48:16 Yeah, a lot of guys don't. See, that's what I'm saying. That's why there's separation at that level. People think everybody's great. No, everybody's not great. You can separate yourself. And the guys who know the difference between getting better and not knowing how to be better,
Starting point is 00:48:35 those are the ones who have that longevity and make it to the Hall of Fame and receive those accolades. Now you go from, there was talks that USC could beat some of those Niners teams back in those days, to going to a Super Bowl with San Francisco losing, so building that organization, to then finally going to Denver and winning a Super Bowl. You felt the whole transition of everything. What's that feeling like?
Starting point is 00:49:03 To go from someone that literally praying to God, week nine guys, you're setting up golf trips. You know, you guys, it's over to playing in the last God damn game of the year. Well, it was similar, there was some similar, that team was very similar to the team that we had when we played in Super Bowl 47. It was a lot of similarities and the same energy was there.
Starting point is 00:49:26 So I already seen it, I knew what it looked like and I knew what it was because I played on that kind of team before. It was just awesome to be able to be trade bittersweet but to get traded to that, to a team and walk into a team and then come back to that same stadium where I just left and win a Super Bowl was unbelievable. It was surreal to me, but it was, I saw it
Starting point is 00:49:48 and I felt it, it was the same energy. That was the kind of attitude the guys walk into, they walk into that facility every single day with the winning attitude. And how you know it's a winning attitude, because everybody, we're about to win that chip today. We're about to hit everybody from the Marcus Ware to Manuel Sanders, we're about to win that chip the Marcus Ware to Manuel Sanders.
Starting point is 00:50:05 We about to win that chip today. Y'all ready? Guys were excited to go to practice. That's how you know you're on a championship team when guys excited to go to practice, man. That's championship energy. We're talking about practice. I sound like Ivan Avison now.
Starting point is 00:50:17 Ivan Avison. I sound like AI. We're talking about practice. Guys were excited to go to practice, but I've been on teams with guys coming in the morning, shoulders hunched over, looking like they have, about to have the worst day of their life. Like they're not excited to be there.
Starting point is 00:50:31 And I took that energy with me to the, when I went, when I left 49ers and I left the Denver Broncos, I took that energy. Everybody, everybody that saw me, I always had a smile on my face. And I seemed as if I was ready to go. And I was. Every day I went to practice, I was ready. I was excited to go to practice.
Starting point is 00:50:52 I was excited, man. It felt so good to just be in practice. I never set out of a training camp. 14 years, I never set out of training camp. I never missed a practice whenever I went. Like I made sure that I was getting those reps I never set out a training camp. I never missed a practice whenever I went. Like I made sure that I was getting those reps because it felt good to run.
Starting point is 00:51:10 Just get out there and just run. You got y'all cooped up in the building all day with all these damn installs, walkthroughs, this, that. You're only outside on the field for three hours a day. Exactly. We're still little kids at heart, man. Just wanna run. That's right. Just wanna get on at heart, man. Just want to run. That's right. Just want to get on the field run.
Starting point is 00:51:26 That's right. I'd love to hear. I know that Super Bowl 50 was Peyton Manning's last game. You're in the locker room. You won. Is there anything you can talk about us about the locker room after the Super Bowl win? After the Super Bowl win? It just went over my head.
Starting point is 00:51:41 It was just so much excitement. You know this, Julian. That's just, man. It's like we worked so hard. That moment is what we played for. And to go through so many ups and downs, the ebb and flows of those games. I mean, there's games that you expected to win that maybe you didn't win, or you just standing there on the sideline holding your brother's hand
Starting point is 00:52:03 and crossing your fingers because you know how important that game is and you have to win it if you're gonna make it to the championship. And just thinking about all that, all the sweat you put into it. And you start to think about when you were in high school, in college,
Starting point is 00:52:16 and I get a chance to play in the biggest game there is and do it over and over and over like you had a chance to do. Man, there's no better feeling than that. Everything that you get, all the accolades and the opportunities you get after football, you deserve it because you work so hard, man. You work so hard to be where you are.
Starting point is 00:52:38 You deserve everything because it's not, you know what I mean? It's guys like to kill spikes and play for years and never get a chance to win a Super Bowl. Yeah. I was always, after the game, I was exhausted. Just, it's like, it's the first time you can relax in a long time.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Like, as soon as you sit at your locker, there's no thinking about next week, how your body's feeling. There's no more practice for a while. You sit and you look at all the staff, you go give all, they're all excited. Like all the people that help you get to where you're at, the training staff, the equipment staff,
Starting point is 00:53:16 you know, the guys that are doing your fricking laundry, like everyone's in there and just, everyone's just like, we can, we can, we can relax. We can relax. We can take off for a month and not do anything. Yeah. No, but it just like, we can relax. We can relax. We can take off for a month and not do anything. Yeah, no, but it's like- Hey, no days off. I can sit there, eat pizza with pepperoni on it.
Starting point is 00:53:32 Yeah, but it was like the ultimate, like, ah. It was just the, there's like, but that's like almost the best thing in the feeling in the world is when you don't have to think about anything and you can just sit down and Just say the job is done. The job is done. The job is finished And you can just sit back and you you know how you can have a drink tonight
Starting point is 00:53:56 Yeah, because you ain't playing next week. You know, hey playing that parade You know the snowboard you can go. Yeah. You can go to the snowboard. You can do something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's, that's, yeah. That's it. Oh yeah. All right, Jackie, set the stage for these Seattle Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:54:12 Let's get into the game. All right, let's talk about these 08 Seahawks. Bit of a regression year for a team that had won the division four straight years. Only a couple years coming off of Super Bowl, that one they lost to Pittsburgh. Sean Alexander released before the season. Team went four and 12.
Starting point is 00:54:27 This was the last season of the Mike Holmgren era. They're probably, they're eating that cap for Sean Alexander, I bet. They probably didn't have any money because he got a big contract. Like remember when he was on the Madden cover? Yeah. That was, man, he was, Sean Alexander was like.
Starting point is 00:54:39 I loved him. He was a god, man. Oh, he's a male. He's big. He's fast. Went to the, went to Washington and just played one more year. This was his last year in the god, man. He was a male. He was big, fast. Went to Washington and just played one more year. This was his last year in the NFL too. An injury-plagued season, Hasselbeck,
Starting point is 00:54:52 heard a tweak the disc in his back, then his knee, then had a helmet to helmet hit. So he was dealing with all sorts of things. He was out most of the season. Charlie Fry was in the QB room. Your boy, baby. Charlie Fry, C Fry,B room. Your boy, baby. Charlie Fry. Charlie Fry, what's up, Haas?
Starting point is 00:55:07 So Charlie Fry went to Akron. He went to my rival. And he was like, I played quarterback in college. And when I changed positions, Charlie Fry took me under his wing and like would throw to me. He was, and he was playing for fucking the Seahawks this year. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:55:24 You know what I mean? He would throw to me at a rival school, and you know, and he was playing for fucking the Seahawks this year. Crazy. You know what I mean? He would throw to me at a rival school. And you know, and he was fucking he was awesome. That's McLo. Yeah, Florida. He's a Florida Atlantic. Atlantic, the OC and quarterback's. Go. Wow. FAU, baby. Let's go. Bringing the boom down there.
Starting point is 00:55:37 I love it. This was a team that also had the likes of Seneca Wallace. What a cool dude he was. Same agent. We had the same agent. Dion Branch. Dion a cool dude he was. Beast. Same agent. We had the same agent. Dion Branch. Dion Branch. Big Walter Jones. Dion Branch.
Starting point is 00:55:49 Dion, baby. You know Dion at all? Yeah. What's up, Dirty? It's all he say, what's up, Dirty? You got Josh Cruz is saying, what's up, Young? I was just thinking that. And Dion Branch would always say, what's up, Dirty?
Starting point is 00:56:01 I like mixing it up, baby. This isn't Bud, this isn't Chief. He funny, man. It's true, though. That's hilarious, Dirty? I like mixing it up, baby. This isn't Bud, this isn't Chief. Hey, you're funny, man. It's true, though. That's hilarious, man. Oh, my goodness. Oh, man. But, yeah, this snapped that Division win streak
Starting point is 00:56:13 and missed the playoffs this year. And then let's talk about these 0-8 Niners. Let's go. 7-9. This was Mike Nolan, single Terry leading them. Nolan was fired after week seven, unfortunately. Mike Martz was leading that offense as the OC. Let me cut you off real quick. Cause we were talking about this a lot.
Starting point is 00:56:32 Mike Nolan wore the suit on the sideline this year. What's your take on the head coach wearing a suit? What are the guys saying in the locker room? I don't, yeah, I don't know. I wouldn't necessarily think that a head coach would have to wear a suit on the sideline. I just don't think it's it's needed because you want to be comfortable out there calling plays.
Starting point is 00:56:52 You're moving around. It's just not it's unnecessary. I'm with you. I like it. I like I like the shirt and tie under a sweater. The Mike Dicker, the Jim Trestle. Yeah. Yeah. Was this like it? So we're just talking about all week prepping for this. Sweater the Mike Dicker the Jim Trestle. Yeah. Yeah, this is Sorry, we're just talking about all week prepping for this Marty over here. Give me some monarchs and a baggie polo, baby. That's all a coach needs baby This was still the stick man playing a candle stick. I never got to play there I wanted to I grew up going to that stick man wasn't like playing there running. It was a shithole
Starting point is 00:57:22 I love the stick. It was like the grass was great. Was it? The grass wasn't great. I heard it was Danny Amandola. We said the grass was great. No, I thought the grass was awful. Was it? Yeah. The grass was awful. Then he is light on his feet.
Starting point is 00:57:36 You can see on Dancing with the Stars every Wednesday. I know Danny is dancing light on his feet on that. There is but nothing like driving into Candlestick. That's the one thing, I grew up a Niners fan. When they went to Santa Clara, you're not in the city. When you went up into Candlestick, the fog's right there, you're right on the water, you got Hunter's Point right there.
Starting point is 00:58:00 I mean, it's just like, you're coming into our house. I feel like you lost that when you're driving into the freaking the driving lot of Great America Park. Yeah, it's not the same. It's not the same. It's not the same. And the weather was always kind of a thing. It's totally different. It's like hot.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Yeah. Hot in Santa Clara. I'm gonna tell you the truth. I'd rather stay in the candlestick. I'll tell you the truth. Just the tradition, man. You take away the tradition with Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and all those guys, just the history.
Starting point is 00:58:29 Those Super Bowl wins that they stacked up, it all happened from there. That was the foundation, that was their home. So as I'm coming in, I'm getting drafted, I'm looking around like, wow, this is crazy. This is where it all happened, wow. It was amazing. But now I can't do the same.
Starting point is 00:58:46 I can't really, I don't really have that feeling when I go into, when I walk into Levi's Stadium. Yeah. Damn, yeah. How much were the 49er vets like Montana, Steve Young around the organization when you were there? They didn't come around much. I didn't see them much.
Starting point is 00:58:59 Yeah, I didn't see them much. I think a lot of times with these organizations, with the older guys, I think sometimes they can feel underappreciated because they're not getting paid. Most of the time these organizations, they wanna give you three to $5,000 to come show up. And a lot of guys, they have a lot of stuff going on. So they rather allocate their time to the kids
Starting point is 00:59:20 and their business. You know what I mean? So it has to make sense. You're not sitting on meetings, no, whether it's with the commanders and their business, you know what I mean? So it has to make sense. You know, I've sat in on meetings, you know, whether it's with the commanders or 49ers, and you know, they bring in the alumni's and they ask them, they say, hey guys, what do we need to do differently?
Starting point is 00:59:33 And the legends, they get a chance to, it's what they call them now, legends. They get a chance to voice their opinion. And that's usually the case if you don't see guys. Now that I know that, I can look back and I'll be like, OK, I see why Joe and Jerry wasn't there. It didn't make sense. It didn't make sense for them, probably. Yeah, I get that. What were the what was this early stage of your career?
Starting point is 00:59:57 Niners teams like. Stressful, a lot of. Frustration. Yeah, like we talked about when you're not winning It was stressful, a lot of frustration. Like we talked about when you're not winning and being a young guy, you have to learn how to be a leader. And, but it was, you know, you find some, you just, I don't know, you just, it's a learning curve for sure. Definitely a lot of learning. But when you, it's good that you go through this.
Starting point is 01:00:25 When you lose, you know how great it feels when you win. And that can be in college or high school, whatever. I mean, you don't have to, I mean, you guys had, you've had moments, even though you guys won a lot, you still have moments where it didn't work out for you. Yeah, a lot of them. You see what I'm saying? So you appreciate that.
Starting point is 01:00:43 It only worked out three times. Yeah, exactly. So you appreciate that. It only worked out three times. Yeah, exactly. So you appreciate that. Yeah, without a doubt. And that's, I would say the Detroit Lions are in an example of that right now. With, they appreciate their winning because they still remember they're losing.
Starting point is 01:00:58 You know, they're a tough football team. They don't give up. You know, it just, it kind of reminds me of that. How was Alex Smith? Tell us something that no one knows about Alex Smith. Alex Smith was. Now, he was just such. An amazing human being.
Starting point is 01:01:19 Very just loving, great teammate, beautiful family comes from a great family. I think they're from San teammate, beautiful family. Comes from a great family. I think they're from San Diego, I believe. But he knew everything. He knew everything everyone had. Like it was when I first came into the league, I didn't know what I had on my browser.
Starting point is 01:01:39 I would just look up, I was like, I got what I got. He just tell me right there, he just tell me. Yeah, it's just, yeah, it was, yo, what I got, what I got? He just tell me, right there, he just tell me. Yeah, it's just, yeah, it was, yo, it's tough. I mean, you go from college and coming in, learning an offense like Norv Turner's playbook. Norv had a, he had an interest in playbook, man, with the way he called plays. It's just, yeah, but Alex was great.
Starting point is 01:02:03 He was always there for me. He was always there. Yeah, he seems like he'd be a really good teammate, good leader. Great teammate, great leader, great teammate. And he was tough, man. He was tough. Can you imagine going through what he went through?
Starting point is 01:02:14 Yeah, he got baptized in that league for a long time. Yes, even when he got it, when he suffered from a concussion, Colin Kaepernick steps in, Alex has to stand there and watch what he started. Even on the sidelines of the Super Bowl. That's tough, man. Handled it right though.
Starting point is 01:02:38 Handled it like a pro. He handled it like a pro. That's what I'm saying. He's tough. At least from the outside in. Exactly. Looking from the outside. He looked like he handled it like a pro.
Starting point is 01:02:46 And look what he did when he left us and went to Kansas City. Yeah, he had a really good career. He's the nice guy. Who are the team assholes? Like from this team, like who is the necessity asshole? Kind of like in the asshole that kind of keeps everyone accountable, that works really hard.
Starting point is 01:03:04 The Richie Incognito kind of asshole. I was gonna say the Julian Adler type of asshole. Everybody, kept everybody in line. Brian Johnson, no. I'm about to say Sean Hill was one of those guys. Sean Hill. He would always, you know, he would always get on guys if he need to.
Starting point is 01:03:20 He's a Maryland guy too. Oh, that's right. Maryland guy, yeah, he was awesome. Isaac Bruce was really quiet. He didn't say much. He's probably the old vet then. Yeah. Old vet. He was old vet to kill spikes with voices, opinions. Jeff Albrecht. Albert had coached now. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:39 Head coach. Wow. Two head coaches, the Sean Foster and the Sean Foster UCLA. He was one of those guys who would always voice his opinion. How was Aubrick? Aubrick was cool, man. I had a great relationship with Aubrick. He was he was he was cool. He was really he was a great like, you know, a young guy coming in.
Starting point is 01:03:57 He he take you under his wing and kind of talk to you. We'd have a we'd have great conversations. But he was he was one of the nicest guys on the team. Now, did you could you see that he had head coaching material in him? Never, never. Why? I don't know. I just didn't. I could never see him as a head coach. Yeah. I mean, he looked pretty old when I came in.
Starting point is 01:04:20 He had the Mohawk back then. It looked like he was in year 25, man. We was probably only 36, right? 35, 36. But I never saw him being a head coach. That's crazy. Now, one of my favorite football players, I loved Frank Gore. He was probably just an ultimate professional, wasn't he? Come on, dog.
Starting point is 01:04:44 Come on, dog. come on, VD. He used to, Frank was great, man. He used to get on me all the time. He used to, he didn't get it, he wouldn't say much to the team, only if he had to, but he would get on me all the time. I thought you missed your block, dog. Oh, come on.
Starting point is 01:05:03 Oh, shut up, Frank. Oh, boy. Oh, shut up, Frank. Oh, boy. Oh, man, he was funny. Frank was, that's my brother, man. He's like one of the best human beings you could ever meet, man. Legend. He was just, he was phenomenal.
Starting point is 01:05:17 Frank. Yeah. Ultimate teammate. I loved, I've met him a few times. I asked him to sign a jersey for me once. He's such a, he's a fucking, he's a bowling ball and he did it for like 18 years. What did he have, 16, 17?
Starting point is 01:05:31 16 year career, San Francisco, Indy, Miami, Buffalo, New York. I mean, he was like 35 and getting like a thousand yards. Incredible, yeah, his son's, I mean his son's playing. I know, his son's on the bills right now. He could have been LeBron. One of the best running backs of all time. Legend, bro.
Starting point is 01:05:48 Without a doubt. We gotta talk about the catch three. That was like an unbelievable drive. You had like three huge catches on that drive. 2011. Yeah, that was a. 2011. Yeah, that was a game to remember.
Starting point is 01:06:01 That was a tough game, man. Yeah. Jimmy Graham scoring and us coming back and having to put up some points. And that drive we had, it was awesome. I remember. I remember everybody played that game. They brought it.
Starting point is 01:06:14 I mean, you talking about a team that believed. That team believed, man. Because I look back now and just, I just can't believe we pulled that game off. Yeah. We're talking about the 2011 Saints game. Aves, division around. Yep. 2011 division around NFC. Yeah. That that Vernon had a middle read, split the safety score,
Starting point is 01:06:40 touchdown with time running out. Nine seconds left. Nine seconds left. Very similar. They call it the catch three. Is the catch two the T.O. catch? T.O. And the catch one is Dwight Clark. Right.
Starting point is 01:06:52 Man, San Francisco legend. That's gotta be sick to have a catch. Yeah, that's cool. Pretty darn cool. You have a catch? Yeah, we got a catch. Yeah, we got a catch. A lot of catches.
Starting point is 01:07:05 Isaac's brooch was on this team too. How was Isaac? Very quiet. Quiet? Came to work, man. He was very... Was that because he was in a division rival? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:07:15 He was just, he didn't say much. I never heard him say anything. Yeah. He never even, I never even heard him say hi. Say hi to him, he's like... Like... So, that's how I just. I love that.
Starting point is 01:07:28 Yeah, he didn't say much. He just came to work. Who is the character on this team? Character? Yeah. Who's the funny guy that was making guys laugh? On this team right here? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:40 Man, I'm gonna have to go with the guy Thomas Clayton right there, man, and running back. Why, what would he do that was guy Thomas Clayton right there, man, and running back. Why? What would he do? That was funny. This dude was unbelievable, man. The funniest thing he did? Yeah. You really want to know? Let's hear it. Oh my goodness. This dude goes to the head coach's house and picks up his daughter.
Starting point is 01:07:57 Oh. For a date. I said, did you go in? He said, yeah, yeah. I said, hey coach, how you doing? He looked at me and said, hey, hey, Thong. I said, did you go in? He said, yeah, yeah, I said, hey coach, how you doing? He looked at me and said, hey, hey, Thunk. I said, what? Said, dude, you mean to tell me you went to take his daughter on a date and you went to the house to pick her up? You know what you just did?
Starting point is 01:08:15 Come on, man. Yeah, if he didn't write, he set himself up for a little insurance, he ain't getting cut. Oh my gosh. What are we doing, bro? Bro. What are we doing, bro? Bro, what are you doing, bro? This is the craziest, funniest guy I've ever met in my life. Oh, I love that move, bro.
Starting point is 01:08:34 He wore the same outfit every time. Full cartoon character mode? Full cartoon. I love that. Cowboy boots, jeans with a chain around the side of his pocket. Whoa, that's a look. And a cutoff button up to show his arms.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Can you imagine this guy? This is a character in a movie. What kind of car? Like a truck? No, I think he had like a Dodge Charger or something. Charger? Something red with a drop top. I can't remember. What a legend, bro. Wait, while we're on the, while we're talking to these guys, Vernon, dude, I was looking at Takeo Spikes.
Starting point is 01:09:08 Takeo Spikes' neck has its own category on Wikipedia. His neck is the size of my hamstring. It says it measures 21 inches around. Wow. It's insane. 21 inch neck? 21 inch, what a beast. That guy looks like a football player.
Starting point is 01:09:21 That guy is, he looks like a football player. He looks like a football player. That guy is. He looks like a football player. He looks like a football player. Naked dog. Yeah. If you want to pick somebody out of the crowd, it looks like a football player. Come on up here to kill spikes. You fit the description. What a beast. Ma'am. Oh, my gosh. All right. Let's get to the game.
Starting point is 01:09:37 Lead up. This was this was Mike Singletary's first game as a head coach. Mike Nolan had just gotten fired after the Giants lost the week before. And this was a backup quarterback showdown, JTO Sullivan versus Seneca Wallace and a rematch of the week two game where the 49ers won 33-30 in OT. Seattle had an early bye week this year, week four. The Niners were getting ready to go on theirs. So this was one in five Seattle versus two in five San Francisco.
Starting point is 01:10:07 Two teams need to win, baby. Ooh. What's the mindset going into the game with a new coaching style? Like what change, I've never been involved in that. What changes? Is there anything that damn changes? Cause you guys have the same plays,
Starting point is 01:10:20 probably the same coaching. What goes into a coaching change? How are the players during this thing? Same place, probably same coaching. What goes into a coaching change? How are the players during this thing? Well, it depends on who the coach is. Yeah. You either pick your head up or put your head down. Depends on who it is. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 01:10:37 It's a coaching change. It's like you can feel the energy. It's like, it's, you can feel the energy. It's like, it's almost if it's like, there's a love and respect that you have for the coach that's leaving. You kind of feel bad for him. It's like, man, we, you create a, you cultivate a relationship with the coach
Starting point is 01:10:56 and now that another coach has to come in, it's like, we don't know what's gonna happen with this coach that's stepping in. Because if he wasn't a head coach, how can he be a head coach now? You know what I mean? We don't know what's going to happen with this coach is stepping in. Because if he wasn't a head coach, how can he be a head coach now? You know what I mean? We don't know what to expect that. We don't know what we're going to get.
Starting point is 01:11:10 But we do know that if you're a football player and you someone who believes in this team and believes that we can win, you're going to rally behind this coach and you're going to say, okay, let's do this. Let's do it for this coach. We're going to get him. Get him going. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:26 You know what I mean? Now. Singletary first team meeting, what's that like? Is he just fucking it? I could I can only imagine his tent, his eyeballs are fucking coming out of his eyes. No, he had everyone respected coach Singletary. He he had a lot. It was a lot of respect. Yeah. Throughout that locker room for coach. I doubt. But he's an intense guy. He had a lot, it was a lot of respect throughout that locker room for Coach Singletary.
Starting point is 01:11:46 Without a doubt, but he's an intense guy. He's an intense guy. We knew, we didn't know exactly what we were gonna get out of him, but we knew he was no nonsense. No nonsense. You had to, every time you touched a field, you better be jogging, no walking.
Starting point is 01:12:00 You know what I mean? Love it. Love your teammates, selfless, Everything, everything that you had to. That he wanted out of you had to be that on this team of you were going to stay. Now, what's your mindset going into this this week of Seattle? Do you remember anything specific? I mean, coach just gets fired. Yeah. As a one in five. First game with coach Singletary playing division rival.
Starting point is 01:12:29 Also dog shit right now. Like what's going in to get you hyped up? Or like, do you know it's already going to be a bad Sunday going into this game? I was thinking it was going to be a great Sunday. I'm about to play with Sean Hill, Marilyn, my Marilyn guy. And I felt like, you know, especially Sean and I, we had a connection because we played on the same, we're from the same school.
Starting point is 01:12:53 Yeah, yeah. Heck yeah. And I know about him. I knew I knew I knew who he was. He was a legend at Maryland. But going into the game, I'm thinking is we're going to win the game. Yeah, of course. I didn't think it was gonna go the way it did, but it took a whole 360 on me. It took a whole 360. And a lot of it came from, it was just frustration with me
Starting point is 01:13:15 and not winning, losing the coach. I'm like, man, this team, this season is, it's not going the way we expected it to go. We're still losing. I mean, we had a losing season. Our first year, our second year, it's tough. Yeah. Jack, let's-
Starting point is 01:13:33 Yeah, just to highlight this game a little bit, bit of a slow start. Seattle gets up six nothing with two field goals. Then Seneca Wallace leads a long touchdown drive to get them up 13-0. Sanfranc attacks on a field goal 13-3, which takes us to one of the 10-pole moments of this game, if you will. 44 seconds left in the half.
Starting point is 01:13:56 The Niners are driving to cut it to 13-10. JTO Sullivan throws a pick six. Josh Wilson returns at 75 yards for a tutty. Vernon chases him down the length of the field, almost makes the tackle. He gets in the end zone. They go up 20 to three at the half. And that was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back,
Starting point is 01:14:14 if you will, for Mike Singletary, talking to Mike Martz on the sideline. And they pull him and go with Sean Hill in the second half. So halftime, what's a halftime like? Do you remember that? Do you remember this like that? Halftime? Yeah. Yeah, I remember pieces of it.
Starting point is 01:14:34 Halftime was, Coach was just, he was just looking at us with his eyes, like you said, big eyes, wide open. Just like, guys, we gotta, you know, he's like, we gotta stay in this thing. If we're gonna win this, we need to play. We need to play harder. You, we gotta do this.
Starting point is 01:14:53 You know, he's just like, you know, just taking charge. It was- He's a good Singletary voice. That is a really good Singletary. Yeah, he was just trying to win. Yeah. He wanted to step in this thing and prove something to the organization. You guys come out at halftime.
Starting point is 01:15:06 Yep. Got Sean Hill in there now. Sean Hill's in and take us through the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Because like this whole thing kind of baffles me because if you're gonna get on your star for not putting the team first for the whole penalty. He has to be doing a lot more than that for you to get on him like that. Cause he just ran 96 yards and almost chased a guy down.
Starting point is 01:15:37 So he's showing you he's not quitting. So take us through this unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and this whole thing. Yeah, it wasn't. I feel like at the moment, just I'd say I was selfish and not selfless because I was young. And in my young mind, I'm thinking like,
Starting point is 01:15:58 what is this guy doing? If I'm talking to myself, who does this guy think he is? They brought me here to make plays and help this team win. I'm Vernon Davis. Why are you sending me to the locker room? I can help this team win. I don't need to go to the locker room. Who do you think you are?
Starting point is 01:16:14 That's what I'm saying in my mind as a young guy coming into the league. But now, as I look back, assess the situation, Coach did me a solid, he did me a favor. Him being there was a blessing in disguise because I needed that. I needed to have that moment of being benched and going to the locker room.
Starting point is 01:16:36 I made a bonehead mistake, I got a penalty, I hit a guy, I believe I hit the, I forget who it was, but I hit him under his chin strap and Coach benched me. That was just, I think Coach knew me. He was there since I got drafted. So he knew how I was. He watched me.
Starting point is 01:16:51 He was just tired of my foolishness. You know what I mean? Wasting time, getting penalized. You're a young guy. You're young. You're still young in the head. Yeah, so I go to the locker room. I do exactly what he tell me to do.
Starting point is 01:17:02 I go to the locker room. Didn't say anything. He come to me. He said, come see me tomorrow. And I go to the locker room. I do exactly what he tell me to do. I go to the locker room. Didn't say anything. He cut to me. He said, come see me tomorrow. And I go see him after the game. I mean, I didn't I didn't know he was going to do what he did on on television. I was at home laying in the bed with my kid's mom watching TV. This pops up.
Starting point is 01:17:21 I'm like, wow. Wow. What do you feel that time? I feel like you. I feel like he threw me under the bus at the moment. Yeah. I'm like, wow. Why would he do this? Why would he do that?
Starting point is 01:17:34 I was like, this guy's crazy. So I knew right away I was gonna walk into that facility tomorrow and it was gonna be I don't I didn't know what was gonna happen. Like you didn't know what happened? I was furious, but I was also, I was furious, but I was also, I was definitely afraid of Coach Mike Singletary, because I knew he wasn't no pushover.
Starting point is 01:17:58 So you think with Singletary, if you got rough with them, you think he would try to take you? Oh man. Yeah, he would. Oh, absolutely. You know, oh man, single-tary. He stood up in practice one day,
Starting point is 01:18:13 he said, I'll fight all of y'all until I win. You might beat me, but I'm gonna get back up until I, I'm gonna keep on fighting. Such old school guy. I love that. You guys get me, but I don't give you no. I love that dude, I love that dude. I love that dude, man.
Starting point is 01:18:26 Oh, that's awesome. What a beast. But we had a heart to heart, man. And from that day, from that moment, I got it. I knew exactly what he wanted me to do and I knew what I needed to do for myself. If I wanted to stay on this team and if I wanted to be a leader for my teammates, I had to change my ways. I had to change my ways. I had to change my attitude. And thankfully
Starting point is 01:18:46 that I had him, I was able to be the player that we saw for 14, well, for the next 11 or 12, 11 to 12 years because of him, what he did for me. Tough love. Tough love. Tough love is good. Nothing but respect. Yeah, I mean sometimes they don't need to be put in our place in some form or fashion.
Starting point is 01:19:12 Absolutely. You know, everyone's got that story and, you know, Coach Singles, you could tell he was doing that out of love when he did it. You know, you're a young guy, lot of money, you've been the man forever.
Starting point is 01:19:28 I mean, that's gotta be so hard for you. That's all you know, you know? So that's probably the turning point of your career right there that turned you and made you think about that. And because it sounds like your energy changed from the type of teammate you were and everything by the time you got to Washington where you enjoyed it.
Starting point is 01:19:52 I can only imagine this day and age, 2008. It wasn't enjoyable at the time when you have a lot of firings going on, you got this going on. So man, that's awesome. It's awesome that you get real growth out of mistakes if you learn from them. Right.
Starting point is 01:20:13 If you learn from them. If you learn from them. That's correct, yeah. You're right. Amen. Yeah. You don't have to answer this, but I'll be a bad person if I didn't ask.
Starting point is 01:20:21 But what did Coach Singletary say to you in that conversation Monday morning? Well, I don't know verbatim exactly what he said, but it was somewhere in the lines like, son, you have to change. You can do better. What you did out there, we can have that on this team, son.
Starting point is 01:20:41 I know what you can be. You can be great. You can be the best tight end in the NFL, but you got to change. And from that moment, I started crying. Yeah. I shook his hand. I said, okay, coach, I got you. From that point on, I was, you know, scouting them.
Starting point is 01:21:01 I fucking love. Thank you. I love football touchdowns. I think we need a fucking Oscar right there. I was crying right there. I fucking love. Thank you. I love football. I just want more touchdowns. I think we need a fucking Oscar right now. I'm crying right now, baby. You got you got both characters in there. You got a tear. That was awesome. Good.
Starting point is 01:21:15 I can't wait to see Plan B. That was awesome. So funny. What's the relationship with Coach Singletary now? Oh, I love he's like he's like a father figure, brother. He's all of that, man. I reached out to him and when I was writing this book, I was like, Coach, can you, I'd love to have you do the forward for this book. He was like, that'd be an honor.
Starting point is 01:21:36 It's like it'd be an honor. I was like, wow, that's amazing. I appreciate your blessings for that. And I linked him with the publishing company and. You know, the rest was his. Wow. That's pretty darn cool. Full circle moment. I love that. Full circle. Jack, give us the aftermath and the legacy of this game.
Starting point is 01:21:54 So this one this one wrapped up 34 13 fullback Leonard Weaver had a heck of a second half broke off some. I mean, a 43 yarder and a 62 yarder for a fullback. That's crazy. That I Leonard Weaver, bro. Carson Newman, baby. Thirty four, 13 Seattle wins. Mike Singletary goes on his legendary press conference rant that we all know
Starting point is 01:22:18 and that we just broke down. The Niners finished seven and nine finished the season five and two. So I got some little momentum going into oh nine Seahawks finished four and twelve. The home ground era comes to an end. They bring in Jim Mora for a lone season before the Pete Carol era starts. And both teams would miss the playoffs. Mike Singletary would be retained as head coach for the next season. Kind of how that one ended up, baby.
Starting point is 01:22:44 What are the greatest coaching rants of all time? And that's gotta be up there. That's gotta be up there. Danny Green. Danny Green. Oh, that was a good one. Fight offs. The owner we thought they were.
Starting point is 01:22:52 We let him off the hook. We let him off the hook. I love his energy, man. RIP, Denny. What a G. Oh, man. That's so funny, man. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:03 Who else had it? Coaches, man. I'm trying to think. I'm a man, I'm 40. The so funny man. Yeah. Who else had a coach? Coaches, man. I'm trying to think. I'm a man, I'm 40. The Oklahoma State one. College. College. Bill's had some good ones in his own right.
Starting point is 01:23:12 What does he say? We're on to Cincinnati. We're on to Cincinnati. That's not a rant though, it's like a word. Yeah. For Bill, a legendary one. Is this, this has gotta be one one of the best co-trance. It's up there.
Starting point is 01:23:27 What do you think? It's never been up there. I think so. It's gotta be. That's pretty funny. And some good came out of it, which I love. So serious, that's pretty funny. It's not getting any better than that.
Starting point is 01:23:39 There's no way. Then do you think the Niners are gonna get over the hump this year or what? What do you think about the current Nin going to get over the hump this year or what? What do you think about the current Niners? Yeah, I think they, I think right now there's a few bumps and bruises. This team has really been, has really suffered, you know, mostly injuries and things of that nature.
Starting point is 01:23:57 But I don't think it really, I don't think it has anything to do with the coaching staff. I think they really, they fixed the things that they needed to fix since the last Super Bowl from last year. I believe in them. I think they really, they fixed the things that they needed to fix since the last Super Bowl from last year. I believe in them. I think they can do it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:10 It's gonna be a lot harder. You know, IU is out for the year. We still don't know where Christian, by the time this episode's out, Christian could be balling right now, or he still could be somewhere on IR. Yeah. I just feel like, I feel like they're losing their mojo
Starting point is 01:24:25 because they like to play from ahead. They like to get that lead, you know, get that run game, have the defense play third down exotic blitzes, exotic games with the linemen with four and then play the zone in the back. That's where they get all their turnovers. So like right now they're not jumping on leads right now. And so they're playing the game from behind, which they're not jumping on leads right now. And so they're playing the game from behind,
Starting point is 01:24:45 which they're not comfortable really doing right now. And you know, if Brock Purdy uses this time, you know, and remembers this time not happening as weapons, if he uses this much like the rant for a learning experience on, hey, you're gonna have to win games when you don't have your guys sometimes, it could help them for the future.
Starting point is 01:25:06 That's where I think they're at right now. Yeah, yeah, and I believe that. I strongly do. But if Purdy is who we say he is and who we believe him to be, believe he is, I think he can be the answer for this team. Yeah, you think that? I think so.
Starting point is 01:25:23 I think so. As long as he stay consistent and he do everything he has to do to get the ball down field. First down, touchdown. Yeah. He's been turning the ball over a little too much right now. You know, he got to, he got to, he got to. Yeah, that's a... Can't do that. Yeah, you can't. That's a lack of focus.
Starting point is 01:25:41 That's what I'm saying. If he can get back to that killer instinct that he had coming in. Sometimes I think he thinks about how everyone talks about him being so basic where he tries to be too extraordinary. Yeah. To like prove a point. Hey bud, just be you.
Starting point is 01:25:59 Just be you and just dice. Right. We miss anything from this game or this this generation, Pat's. No, not that I don't know that I can. Niners or 49ers. Geez. We got pats on the brain, baby. Oh, I got to get in football mode. So you ended your career in Washington.
Starting point is 01:26:18 What was it like finishing your career with your hometown team? Oh, finishing my career with the Washington commanders back in my hometown team, back in my hometown, was truly amazing for me because I had a chance to play in front of friends and family and spend time with the people that I never really had a chance to spend time with, like my mom, because my grandparents raised me and my six siblings. So it was great.
Starting point is 01:26:44 And that's the reason why I'm still there because of my experience playing with the team and being back there is really I'm really intrigued with the city. I mean it's an amazing city. Is it evolved how it evolved is just just pretty cool to see you know because I grew up there and you know you know, having that 10 year separation, going to San Francisco and coming back after leaving Denver, I don't want to go anywhere else yet. Very appreciative. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:15 How nice it's been playing with Jayden Daniels. Oh, Jayden Daniels. Watching him in college, everything that he did in college, I knew that was going to transfer over to the NFL. That dude was, that dude, I mean, he didn't want to win the Heisman for nothing. And I met him when he was in college, I knew that was gonna transfer over to the NFL. That dude was, that dude, I mean, he didn't win the Heisman for nothing. And I met him when he was in college. I just, I could tell he was just a great kid,
Starting point is 01:27:32 very seemed like he was very focused. He loved playing, he loved the game of football. And he just, I mean, he can do it, man. He can do it. Can't teach that. Can't teach it. He's just a, he just a special football player. And I've got one more selfish question.
Starting point is 01:27:46 I'm a big Virginia Tech fan. I know Maryland. You played in Virginia Tech-Blacksburg on a Thursday night. Can you just tell me a little bit what it's like being on a way team playing in Blacksburg on a Thursday night? Yeah, playing in Virginia Tech is. That's a crazy environment. They love football out there.
Starting point is 01:28:02 They love football and most of the time they have great players. And I believe who was it was quarterback when I was there. Marcus Vic, I believe. He was the quarterback when I was there. Yeah, he was. I mean, he could play. College, he could play. He was fast. He could pass. And I was camp chancellor there. I think he was there. Might have been. Josh Morgan too might've been on the team. Josh Morgan was there. Exactly. Cause Josh, I played against Josh in high school.
Starting point is 01:28:30 Oh really? He was at Eastern senior high school when I was at Dunbar. Dunbar. Yeah. So they had some talent for sure. Um, but yeah, that's, that's a tough environment to play in. Man. Loved it.
Starting point is 01:28:42 Thank you. We'll be right back after this quick break. Hey, hey, hey, it's Rob G. We'll be right back after this quick break. Starting point is 01:30:10 Name the game. We got to name this game. These are some names we came up with. Or if you want to name the game, you have an idea. You can name it. We came up with the cannot play with them game, hit the showers game, the single Terry ramp game, the Vernon Davis game, the Leonard Weaver game, or do you have something else?
Starting point is 01:30:30 The cannot play with them game. The cannot play with them game. I can't play with them. I want winners. I told Vernon, go take a shower. That's damn good. That's a rookie skit. That's a rookie skit right there.
Starting point is 01:30:46 Let's score the game presented by Jamison. Is this the greatest game of all time? Let's score it. Stakes, zero to 10 decimals, okay. The stakes of this week seven, week eight, 2008 game. Stakes of this game. New coach. Say four, five, four.
Starting point is 01:31:07 I like that. 4.5? 4.5. Okay. I'll go with the. Pro score, pro score. I'll go with the five. Five even.
Starting point is 01:31:15 You and Vernon on the same page, 4.5. I had a 4.1. The star power of this game, zero to 10 decimals okay. Ooh, 10. 10. Three backup quarterbacks played. You got Vernon in there. Gotta put some respect on JTL Sullivan. I'll go with the, dude his YouTube channel is awesome.
Starting point is 01:31:32 You don't have to go to that, I'm saying 10. I'm thinking about all the other guys. Right, gotta give Sean to the film. I love JTL Sullivan's YouTube channel. JTL Sullivan, he's got YouTube. Hold on, was Marsha on there yet? No, not yet, this is like Julius. Oh no, go back, take that 10 away.
Starting point is 01:31:44 Take that 10 away. Yeah, they have all the stuff there. Beast Mon like Julius. Oh no, go back, take that 10 away. Take that 10 away. Yeah, they didn't have all the stones there. Beastman gets you a 10. Let's go, let's go six. Six point five. Six point five. Marshawn worth 3.5 points. That's right.
Starting point is 01:31:54 At least. I give a six. Ooh. I got a five eight. I got a 5.1. I was going a little low there, sorry. The game play to this 35-14 game, zero to 10 decimals okay, zero being terrible,
Starting point is 01:32:12 10 being. 3.5. 3.5. 3.5, integrity score. Yeah, very integrity type score. This man, this guy, he respects the integrity of the art. I love that. Seriously. You know, I can feel it.
Starting point is 01:32:26 I'm gonna go with a five one. Still pro football, I love football. 4.0, yeah, I'm right in that. 4.2. Now we score the name of the game. The can't play with them game. It's got some cultural significance. Cultural significance.
Starting point is 01:32:43 We are talking about this game literally damn near 20 years later. Week eight game. You say that line, everyone knows what game you're talking about. The score of this name of this game. 10. 10.
Starting point is 01:32:56 Heck yes. Hell yeah. Seven five. 7.5. I went with an 8.6. I did an 8.1. 5.78. It's 5.78. Where's 5 8.1. 5.78. 5.78. That puts us, okay it puts us 67th right below the 2019 Raiders versus Bears in London and right above week 11 or 2011 week 16 Patriots versus Bills.
Starting point is 01:33:22 That feels right. That feels right. Nice. That's amazing. That's a lot of games, man. Yeah, that feels like a good spot. Heck yeah. Wow. Brandon, we miss anything? No, the book.
Starting point is 01:33:34 We talked about the book, movie, the farm. That's the plan. Plan B, the farm, playing ball, life lessons from my journey to the Super Bowl and beyond. Awesome. Oh, 72 hours come out November 1st. 72 hours. 72 hours.
Starting point is 01:33:51 Sam, my guy, Sam Trammell. That's a good movie, man. You got to check it out. Comes out November 1st. I mean, he's got, he just works. It might be one of my better movies right here, man. Oh, heck yes. 72 hours.
Starting point is 01:34:03 Let's go check it out. November 1st. And my music is in the movie. They show me that's me rapping. That's me singing. No way. Yeah. So I get up to stop the girl from getting from robbing the burger joint. Yeah. And I get up and I go whooping on the guy. That's my song. Give me a quick eight bars.
Starting point is 01:34:21 What? I saw the trailer on IG this morning. It looks insane. You saw it? Yeah, I saw it on IG this morning. November 1. Everyone go check it out. Thank you, bro. I appreciate you coming. Thank you, guys. Vernon Davis is fully an actor. What a guy. Fully.
Starting point is 01:34:38 He did like a full monologue scene right there. Voices, two, back and forth. His impersonations were great, too. Spectacular. I thought I was Singletary. I thought we had Mike on the show. I wanted to ask him, did he ever mock him? Did you ever do, you know what I mean? Or like behind his back? I didn't get a chance to ask him, but I read a thing earlier that I guess Delaney Walker, who was on this team, was saying that Singletary came in later that week and like did a rap
Starting point is 01:35:09 based on like his press conference to the team. And everyone's just like, what is this? What? I didn't get a chance to ask for him. I really wish I had. What's the kind of shit you gotta do? God. God damn it, Jack.
Starting point is 01:35:19 Well, in honor of today's Mike Singletary legendary rant, we're gonna do a breakdown. Let's break down some of the other coaches' rants, huh? So in honor of today's Mike Singletary legendary rant, we're gonna do a breakdown. Let's break down some of the other coaches' rants, huh? There are a lot of them. Football coaches know our rants, baby. A lot of those press conference guys that, one recently in the press calling Team Soft, is that a rant?
Starting point is 01:35:40 That's a rant. It's a notable press, it is a notable press conference moment. We're still talking about it, so he did something. It's something. And we kept it to football. Yeah, we'll keep it football. When the press makes news.
Starting point is 01:35:51 Football coaches, because there are some great player ones too. For sure. For sure. Yeah. Oh man, let's get into it. We'll run through these, we'll read through the transcripts, which just make them even funnier. Mike Gundy.
Starting point is 01:36:03 To see them on paper paper and then we'll react We mull it Mike Gundy Mike Gundy Oklahoma State head coach still the head coach. This is back in oh seven I'm a man I'm not I'm not a kid right something about me or some coaches And this was after this the craziest thing is this was following a win like this was after a win This was two days after a win crazy. No no Wednesday He gets in there They said he ripped the Red Bull before going into this
Starting point is 01:36:34 Grabbed the newspaper and just goes off on the media about this article that uh that they wrote about his his benching of The guy who had been the starter Bobby Reed and there was some tension there. So he put in Zach Robinson, who we now know as the offensive coordinator down in Atlanta. And they were saying, according to Reed's account and others, this was a lot of posturing to really like, he really wasn't. So the locker room didn't buy into this? No, Bobby Reed definitely didn't. The relationship was kind of strained there.
Starting point is 01:37:08 He thought, you know, the starting job should have been his. But behind closed doors, Oklahoma State wanted to go with Robinson. And he's kind of out there fake sticking up for his guy is sort of the legend around it. But how many years ago? Sorry, this was oh, you know, this was oh, seven. I'm a man. I'm 40. I say that twice a week. Yeah, it still is in the lexicon.
Starting point is 01:37:30 Yeah. It also makes me feel better about getting older because not yet a man. I'm not even 40 yet. So like 40. I'm good. I got a long ways to go to. I'm still a boy. You can't write anything bad about you. That's right, baby. Mike Gundy said some wild stuff. This is his wife. He's a no. He's wild. First rodeo, brother. He's not, baby. Mike Gundy said some wild stuff. Oh, he's he's a no, he's wild. His first rodeo, brother. He's not.
Starting point is 01:37:48 Shout out to Cowboys, baby. And he's he's a visor guy, too. Big visor guy, mullet guy. Mullet visor is a vibe. Yeah. He's a he's a one of a kind guy. He he was actually he was the OC when they recruited this Bobby Reed guy and got him to stick around, but Les Miles was the head coach, which I forgot.
Starting point is 01:38:08 I forgot about Les Miles at Oklahoma State. Oh, shit. That one kind of went under my radar. But a tie back into this game that prompted this rant, they had beat, they, they won a shootout against Texas Tech a couple days before this. 49-45. Dola? Dola in this game. Yeah. Texas Tech a couple days before this 49 45 Dola in this game
Starting point is 01:38:30 14 catches for 233 yards in a tutty Graham Harrell's out there throw until his arm falls off 46 of 67 for 646 yards five touchdowns Jesus that is a Five touchdowns. Jesus. That is an old Michael Crabtree too. Crabtree. 14 catches. 237 yards. Three touchdowns. This game is crazy. We gotta do this game. I miss Big 12. I miss when it was like that. Man, Dola and Crabtree, that's a good receiver combo. That is fun, baby. Graham Harrell. What a game. Every year they were just breaking the all-time touchdown record. Just letting it fly. Oh, Dola made the guys Go on a rant. That's really crap tree friend of the show Dola. We love you, baby. Vote Dola Dola Danny go vote now whatever 21 52 3 but I love I just rarely do you get a great rant?
Starting point is 01:39:21 Days after a win. It's a unique. It's unique in the rant world We got a we had Dennis green We mentioned that a little bit with Vernon during the episode. Vernon was a fan of that rant. When he was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, this is 2006. This is Rex Grossman Super Bowl year baby. Ryan Urlach, that defense Devin Hester too was just on fire. After a Monday night game, Dennis Green's Cardinals were one in four.
Starting point is 01:39:48 The Bears, who eventually, yes, went to the Super Bowl, were five and oh. And after three quarters of football, Arizona was leading them 23 to 10. But with five minutes to go, the peanut punch man, the punch man, Peanut Tillman, he returned to Edgerton James fumble for a tutty edge. Edgerton Cardinals years, you forget about those. Don't forget about them. Which are better? Which is which is better, Edgerton James from the Cardinals or Emmty edge edge of Cardinals years. You forget about those. Don't forget about them. Which are better. Which is which is better? Edren James from the Cardinals
Starting point is 01:40:08 or Emmett Smith on the Cardinals? Ooh, both weird. Both very weird. Both probably I think went over a thousand. You have to look that up here real quick. No, you don't have to just. Then with them in two minutes later after that fumble Devin Huster returns a punt 83 yards
Starting point is 01:40:22 which would be the game winning score. So it was a brutal loss. Rip their hearts out. And Dennis Green takes the podium, and he lets him fly, baby. The Bears are who we thought they were. That's why we took the damn field. You want to crown them, the crowd their ass. But we they were who they thought they were.
Starting point is 01:40:41 Remember that? Yes. And we let them off the hook. We let them off the hook. You're like a like the coach slam. Remember that? And we let him off the hook! And we let him off the hook! And he slammed it. Bro, that was all time. All time. I loved that.
Starting point is 01:40:54 Such an old school guy, and we let him off the hook. Crown their ass! Crown! I never really heard that term, crown them, until Dennis Green. Now every time I hear someone say it, I'm like, Dennis Green? Crown them! They picked off Rex Grossman four times that night. Who's Dennis Green. Now every time I hear someone say it, I'm like, Dennis Green, crown him. They picked off Rex Grossman four times that night. Where's Dennis Green? He passed away.
Starting point is 01:41:08 Yeah. RIP, man. RIP. I love Dennis Green. Vikings Dennis Green. Man. Randy Moss, Chris Carter. Man, losing what one game that season. Yeah. Just have heck of a guy, heck of a coach. This might be my favorite. Moving on. Moving on. Next one. Jim Mora, another guy we mentioned of a coach. This might be my favorite. Moving on. Moving on. Next one. Jim Mora, another guy we mentioned during the
Starting point is 01:41:27 Indianapolis Colts. His son. Oh, is it was this after like playing the playing the Patriots? This was 2001. This was after the Niners. Oh, they they lost. Don't talk about playoffs. You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we win another game. Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we win another game. Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs?
Starting point is 01:41:49 I just hope we can win another game. Playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? I say this one four times a week. Playoffs? This was, they fell to four and six, so this would have been week 10, I believe, right? Yeah, week 10, because they moved to four and six. So this would have been week 10. Oh, I believe right. Yeah, we can because they they moved to four and six after this game. Peyton Manning through four picks this game. So that was kind of the story of that when they lost 41 to 20 to San Fran. And so that was a young Peyton Manning
Starting point is 01:42:17 just getting ripped. And then he went on to say, I don't know, all I know is we threw four interceptions and fumbled once in one interception, they returned for a touchdown. Three others is we threw four interceptions and fumbled once. In one interception they returned for a touchdown. Three others were in our end of the field and they scored. That's all I know. That's inexcusable. Inexcusable. And then he went on to the classic playoffs. Don't talk to me about playoffs. So threw Payton under the bus a little bit there, but I mean, he was in rant mode.
Starting point is 01:42:41 Man, he definitely threw him under the bus. Yes, four receptions. Is Jim Morrow gone? He's still with us. He's still with us? Good. All right. I believe he's still kicking.
Starting point is 01:42:50 Let me double check here. Where's his son? Where's this junior or someplace? He's coaching somewhere, right? 89, Papa Jim Morrow. 89? Let's go, Jim Morrow. And then the son, he was. I remember where the Falcons had gone. He's at UConn. Myo. 89. Let's go, Jim Moro. And then the son, he was...
Starting point is 01:43:06 I remember as a Falcon take. He's at UConn, my bad, sorry. UConn! He was a UCLA head coach for a while. Holding it down, bro, UConn. I always hated Jim Moro Jr. just because making Mike Vick run a West Coast offense, it's just like, I'm like 14 years old,
Starting point is 01:43:21 and I'm just like, that's the dumbest thing you've ever... Vick's whole thing is like improvisation and throwing the ball deep and being an athlete you're gonna put them on timing routes What are we fucking doing here? That's my rant. That's pretty my that's a pretty good post-cast rant, baby Mike Vic fuck we love you. We love you Mike Mike in West Coast would be lethal. It wasn't West Coast would be lethal. It wasn't. Went to the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:43:46 I didn't. Didn't they? No. Didn't Mike go to the Super Bowl or they went to the NFC Championship? They beat the Packers in the playoffs in Lambeau before they brought in Jim Moore. Oh, right. All right. Next one.
Starting point is 01:43:56 Mike Singletary. We all know that we talked about that one. We don't have a whole heck of a lot. We don't have Vernon to do the impression. Yeah, we don't have Mike Singletary. I mean, Vernon Davis here with us. So I don't even know if we should try. I like calling them Vern.
Starting point is 01:44:09 I like Vern. I like when he said Farmer Vern. Broadway Vern was also awesome. Broadway Vern? Broadway Vern had a great ring to it. Who wants to go to the Jets? Yeah, that was a wild one. I mean, if you got it,
Starting point is 01:44:20 think about it, if you got it turned around and won at the Jets, you'd be a king forever. Yes Yes, so I mean I could see why guys want to do it. It's it's still New York City. It's still Broadway Joe there's a lot of tradition with the Jets like It's not like they're Jacksonville No, really it's like yeah, they did win one Super Bowl in 60s I mean, but it's like yeah, they did win one Super Bowl in the 60s. I mean, but that's still It's like one of those great game and those people love their football. Oh, yeah I mean, so I it'll be like so weird when they when they do win. I think it'd be cool
Starting point is 01:44:58 Will it happen in the next 20 years? I don't know. I don't know either. I don't know I don't know if it'd be cool, but I wouldn't be mad. It'd be something. Yeah, I mean, it would be good. It'd be good for the league. For sure. Be good for the Shield. Of the historically snake bit franchises, let's just say. Them are or the or the Chargers, Browns, Browns, Lions. Who's going to Browns and Lions?
Starting point is 01:45:20 Lions, Lions will do before them all. I think that's the oh, my gosh, that's kind of crazy. Chargers with Harbaugh. I know it's weird right now, but give them some time. Yeah, but they've been competitive and with Philip Rivers not too, too far back. Yeah, but they've never. The Browns have never, like they had one playoff win
Starting point is 01:45:37 since like Bernie Kozar. Yeah. With Baker. Yeah. And then Detroit. Pelochek was coaching them. I mean. Yeah. Gotta learn from it, hopefully then I was right. I mean, yeah Gotta learn from it. Hopefully you better have yours. Oh, I mean Peter Schrager
Starting point is 01:45:50 Pick Packers over Chiefs or Packers Chiefs Chiefs one in three Pete I guess he's done it like three times in a row or so eggs knows he picked the winner too or just I don't know Claire point what else would we got? Don't know clairvoyant. What else would we got? Herm Edwards her maybe this was this was a hermit the Jets Herm wearing the crew neck the shield polo or a sweatshirt here crew neck great crew neck was just a shield I love that this was back in oh wait another midweek rant This was at his Wednesday presser the Jets were sitting at two and five and Herm just lets it loose, baby.
Starting point is 01:46:26 He lets it rip. Another great one that is very quotable. This is what's great about sports. You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't just play to play it. Hello?
Starting point is 01:46:40 It was a play to win the game. Love that one. David Bennett. David Bennett. We might need some context. This is a this is a most old Carolina 2011 I remember this from the world of college football He is the head coach at Coastal Carolina only lasted a few more months after this but this was This was a great one when a coach is up there meowing at a press conference, you know you're in for something special. You'll make me do this one.
Starting point is 01:47:09 You read this one, Jack. You need to be more like a dog. We got a bunch of cats in here. Meow! Looking in the mirror. Do I look good? I got my extra bands on. I got my other shoes.
Starting point is 01:47:18 Be a dog. We don't need no meows. We don't need no more cats. We need more dogs. So he proceeded this by telling a story about getting his sons ready for a golf tournament and a cat got stuck in their screen door at their house and he was yelling to his sons, there's a cat in the house. What? There's a cat in the house. And he went this whole back and forth and he starts meowing a bunch and then he lays into this,
Starting point is 01:47:43 about dogs, baby. Coastal needed some dogs. And that right there is why football players and coaches have the dumb tag. Yes. Right there. That is, what are we doing? He's not wrong.
Starting point is 01:48:03 You don't win with cats, you win with dogs. He's not wrong. You know, we were cats, you were dogs. He's not wrong. I get it. I love how this transcription too. Where did we get this transcription from? I just wrote it after the thing. Because some dogs are OG and some dogs are AWG. And I think it actually works with how...
Starting point is 01:48:22 I think he did DAWG. I think when he's referring to the yeah. Yeah, like we need to be playing more like a dog with an oh great. I need a dag. Yeah. Be a dog. I think be a dog could be an AWG. We need more dogs. Yeah, you need to go AWG. Dog is like a bat like you dirty dog.
Starting point is 01:48:42 That's like what this is. This was I wouldn't say dumb tag, but I'm pretty sure after this and looking back on this in 2024, this coach, do you think he winces a little like, I probably shouldn't have said that. I wonder. I mean, this is one of those. I mean, like when you're pulling out the sound effects when you're me. Great analogy. I'm an analogy guy But uh, where's he at? He was an administrative person at Lexington School District one in South Carolina. I love it, baby High school. Yeah. Yeah, probably getting paid a boatload to this is viral. Hey, yeah guys cashing in Let's go coach Coastal Carolina home of Isaiah likely I say like Love Isaiah likely
Starting point is 01:49:30 Beast oh is this a coach Belichick? Yeah, right. Let's be in Jack Should we two hands? What do you want to be or be reporter? Or do you want to be bill someone who wants me bill? I feel like the guy that does the best bill impression You want to be bill? I'll be bill. Do you want to be I'll be Bill, I'll be Bill. You wanna be the reporter? Yeah, I'll be reporter. Okay. Ready, Jules? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:49:50 Your team has been successful for so long. How difficult is it to adjust to the adversity of Monday night's game and to get back on track? This team and this organization hadn't had these sort of issues in the past. We're on the Cincinnati. You mentioned Tom Brady's age in your draft. We're on the Cincinnati.
Starting point is 01:50:04 Do you think having a 37-year-old- We're on the Cincinnati. You mentioned Tom Brady's age in your draft. We're on the Cincinnati. Do you think having a 37 year old. We're on the Cincinnati. Nothing about the past, nothing about the future. Right now, we're preparing for Cincinnati. Do you think the talent you have here is good? We're getting ready for Cincinnati. Do you think you've done enough to help Tom Brady? We're getting ready for Cincinnati.
Starting point is 01:50:22 That's what we're doing. And then I think we all know it ended up happening in that 2014 season with the New England Patriots. Yeah, we won that that year. Going to beat the Seattle Seahawks. I remember we had an important shoot that Tuesday after the Cincinnati game. And when we were playing, it was always like, hope the Pats fucking win. Otherwise, shoots getting canceled. And I remember being very happy that you guys kicked the shit out of the Bengals
Starting point is 01:50:50 For that shit we had was it Google Glass? I don't know it was later than that. It was it coach up I don't know. I have to look that up cuz I just remember writing on this Cincinnati game 43 to 17. Whoo-hoo, baby Again 43 to 17. Oh, baby Well, but what now is Andy Dalton back then? Oh Red Rockets old coach now in the media Chatty-cat. Yeah, he chatty-cat a far cry from this guy. Oh, oh my gosh Do we have a favorite out of these? I?
Starting point is 01:51:27 Like Danny Dennis green I like Danny Green. I think the best Danny. Danny, I think it just had the most it had the most passion behind it. It had the vigor. It felt so authentic. Yeah, it was real. Yeah. Being good. Yeah, I don't know that one. That seems a little yeah. He was posturing, I think. Yeah. Also, that Arizona team was dog shit and dog shit for a while. Like and they should have won that game.
Starting point is 01:51:46 Dennis Green is legitimately like really hurt and mad about this. Yes, yeah. That's a man that just blew a 13 point lead in the four. Jim Mora is just like, he's over it. He might be my favorite just cause I just will subconsciously. He's conceded to beat, he's done. Singletary, growing experience, I guess.
Starting point is 01:52:07 I will say Jim Mora, in the studio where we're hanging around the Nuthouse, if you will, occasionally I'll just do a playoffs, and then from the other room, often Jack will be like, you play to win the game! Or, no, we're just trying to win a game. We're just trying to win a game? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:21 Don't talk to me about playoffs. These are all, the fact that these have such staying power in in the sports lexicon or even just herm is just frustrated. Term is just frustrated. Like with this, like the question, he let the question get to him a little bit. Oh, big time. That's that. And then David Bennett. I don't know. Was he trying to go viral?
Starting point is 01:52:41 It seemed like it. I mean, I don't think he was, but it sure seemed like it. What do you guys think? You want to hear about that in the questions? I can only imagine. And then Bill, like this isn't really a rant. This is a word. This is three words. We're on the Cincinnati. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:52:58 This is considered a rant. I think in build and rant is a word that we can change. Yeah. Yeah. It's like he loves memorable in it Yes now I've heard him reference it a couple times. He's I Listen to one on his shit. He's I think he's good people want us to do this game, too By the way, we should they want to do the I think that's almost got to be like a two-hander you do the week Before and then you do the Kansas City game and then you do that when you know
Starting point is 01:53:23 Kansas City was the Kansas City the game was before yeah. game and then you do that when you don't even Kansas City was the Kansas City games before yeah Yeah, so you do maybe you reference that one heavy, and then you do the since he blowout I don't know what you technically consider the game that we do It's a good I can only imagine all these are 2000s what and I don't know how Coach post game press conferences were what game imagine Belichick gonna do whatever whatever one he wants to do That's ready some Navy Army game. I would would do anything he'll do that for a million percent lacrosse Wesleyan lacrosse Wesley like a fucking Cherokees versus the goddamn Apache lacrosse game
Starting point is 01:53:55 We should we should we should tap into a I team 30 Three we should tap into AI and do like what a Vince Lombardi like postgame Oh my gosh, I know there probably be some like some crazy old old man who's flying around Vince Lombardi Like if they did postgame press conferences Hello I made him a 1920s gangster I don't know why I made him a 1920s gangster cuz he is I'm looking at this box score this Cardinals game Matt liner at first Rex Grossman. What a game. She's Louise Matt liner man And John Bolton 12 catches 136 yards of a toddy beast. It's Matt liner son's birthday here soon I just did like an email thing for Did you just say Matt Liner? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:46 Why do you know it's Sonsberg? Because I literally just had to do an email for like a well-wishes thing. Oh nice. You actually sent emails? What a nice guy. Whatever. I send all my Google Docs here. It could be, I think it's, yeah, or graduation.
Starting point is 01:55:01 He's a stud player, isn't he? He is. He's getting some looks. Oh man. But man. That was fun. That was a stud player isn't he? He is, he's getting some looks. Oh man. But man. That was fun. That was a fun episode with Vernon. One thing quick on Vernon, when we book a guest,
Starting point is 01:55:12 it's often like there's a little bit of a dance on figuring out the game. Oftentimes it's asking them what game they wanna do, but sometimes you know you have to be limited with the amount of communication just to kind of hone it in and get them locked in. And with this one we asked the game, and literally in seconds he had this game and we were like, yes He knows this he knows the fucking assignment and we were so pumped to do this game
Starting point is 01:55:33 It's clearly prepared you hear I takes his acting career Mm-hmm, I mean probably did some serious Ernie homework on this goddamn podcast before he came here is Ernie shit I didn't see. To prepare. I mean, he had some impressions. He must've, I don't know if he's an impression guy. I know he's an actor. But he knows that we do impressions. So he came in light, I mean, that was some fire.
Starting point is 01:55:55 Straight fire. Let it rip, baby. Shout out Vernon. Shout out Vernon. Thanks for coming in. I was gonna go watch Plan B. Plan B, baby. 72 hours, 72 hours.
