Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Podcast. So, you know, we got a packed house, right? There's people coming and crashing. Right. I'm trying to make the most of it, so I'm, you know, I'm suggesting we play some games, camp games. Keep the attitude light.
Starting point is 00:00:23 We're all here, you know? And then everybody starts bringing up these kind of like camp games, you know? I was hoping to play something a little more. I thought you just said you were bringing up camp games. But that phrase was ringing in my head. Maybe I said camp games, but I guess I thought. Maybe that's what made them think of it.
Starting point is 00:00:47 But I guess I thought I was thinking of games from my camp. Different camp. But I don't know. So it comes around to like, people are throwing out different suggestions. Some of them sound fun, some of them don't. And then everybody really rallies around and gets excited around, I can't remember who said it, damned if it matters, somebody goes, ooh, ooh, ooh, let's play Pigs in a Tunic.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Pigs in a Tunic. Pigs in a Tunic. And everybody goes, oh yeah, I don't wanna be the guy to go like, what the fuck is P pigs in a tunic? You know what I mean? And somebody's like, I'll get the pillows. And then somebody else like runs out in the
Starting point is 00:01:31 kitchen was like, I'll check and see if they have any crackers or cereal boxes. And then, and then a bunch of people just started lying down on their belly. Like the tune kind of. Hey, they won't lie on their belly like. Is that the tuna? Kind of. Hey. They won't lie on their bellies? I ultimately just was like, hey, you gotta go.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Yeah. Like, I was happy, you know, initially to be like welcoming. You really tried to make it work. And like try to support. Yes, I know you did. Because obviously like people are being evacuated and all that. I know you did. But I can't not know the game,
Starting point is 00:02:06 and I can't ask what the game is. Yeah, of course. So it was really distressing, and I've been searching on the internet, so I'm asking you now, because I don't know what this is. We can't have everyone on their bellies this way. Why do they need cereal boxes?
Starting point is 00:02:21 Not now on their bellies. It just wasn't, it wasn't right, and it wasn't okay with me. Crackers. And I had to kind of stand in my power and say like, to even, even like my wife and stuff, go, you can't sleep here tonight. Like, you just have to go somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And like. You need a fresh start for the house. You need sort of a. I kind of went. you just have to go somewhere else. And like. You need a fresh start for the house. You need sort of a. I kinda went. Decontamination protocol for the house after pigs in the tunics. I go, this is like Ghost in the Graveyard? And somebody, I guess kindly went.
Starting point is 00:02:59 I don't know that game. Went, oh, good one man. And I was like, I guess that was sort of like a stay of execution for me, but I gotta come clean now and just say like, I don't know what it is, I can't have it in my house, I haven't been able to sleep, I haven't, you know, I'm a victim here. Because it's been very, very distressing.
Starting point is 00:03:24 But we have a guest. He was scheduled to be in person, but he flew away, is this right? Yeah, that is right. I sort of fled the premises. Did you ever play this? Did I ever play Pigs in the tunic? In a tunic.
Starting point is 00:03:44 No, it's sad. I think this is what they were saying. I honestly can't even be sure. Did you ever see Succession? Oh, um. Yeah. No, don't tell me. I know what this is.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Succession, Succession. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I've seen this, I've seen this. So Kevin sent me this. Yeah. Right. This is actually real stories happening to real people. Well, in that they play a game called Bore on the Floor, maybe it was inspired by that, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:21 No, some people were on the floor, but most weren't. Maybe half and half. Some people got on the floor on their belly, but it was pretty clear they weren't gonna stay there. And a tunics is not a floor. No, no. And a floor is not big, but it's the closest thing I know to it.
Starting point is 00:04:37 It wasn't that, it wasn't that. I didn't say it was that, I said it might have been inspired by it. But Kevin sent me Succession. Kevin sent me a divx of it Yeah, he's a success. Yeah, he sent me a couple links and he said check out this epic suck session Kevin sent me a lossy divx Yeah
Starting point is 00:05:00 Kevin sent me a lossy divx of success. He sent me a flak file a Massive flak file. A massive flak file. That sounds like what I'm talking about. So yeah, I think that is. Yeah. I couldn't get through it. I texted the file he had on, do not disturb. It's not for everyone.
Starting point is 00:05:20 It's not for everyone. Zach, you love being in the computer like this, don't you? Look at you there on the computer. You're obsessed with it. You're addicted to being in the computer like this, don't you? Look at you there on the computer. You're obsessed with it. You're addicted to being in the computer. You're just loving it in there, aren't you? This is more of this. I was having a good time over here.
Starting point is 00:05:29 You're just having the time of your life in the computer today. This is this science fiction world that you occupy now where you're actually inside the computer and you're enjoying it. You're just snuggled right in the computer, aren't you? That's right. It is, you guys don't know this,
Starting point is 00:05:42 but it's nice and warm over here. It looks a little warm, doesn't it? Oh, that's lovely. That's lovely. It looks warm in the computer. I have a t-shirt on. Wow. Wow, so this guy went short sleeves because that's how nice and warm he is.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Well, luckily we have the- You guys have little paintings behind him and it's interesting. It also has been warm here, but in a very bad way. Right. And you held up two fingers, you held up two fingers and said PC blinders. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Well, I don't know how much my presence, I think my presence was only really a detriment. What is it with you and shows with like Succession and PC blinders? It's like. Yeah, you're obsessed with TV shows. It's like you want us to talk to you about TV shows, because you're in them.
Starting point is 00:06:28 It's like, I've actually been in them too. I'm not like talking about it all the time. I'm talking about Camp Games, whatever you guys wanna talk about. I'll talk about Camp Games. No, I don't wanna do it with you now. No, it's fine, we can talk about TV shows, it's fine. I don't wanna do it with you now.
Starting point is 00:06:43 We can talk about TV shows, it's like, I want this to We can talk about TV shows It's like I want this actually like go somewhere Then we'll talk about TV shows. I honestly do not give a fuck as I've been saying to other guests I don't want to be a big-ass fucking favor to me Yeah, you know what I mean? Like it's just not like the vibes that I need the guest bringing is that it's some huge ass fucking favor to me You basically begged to be on the show because you were gonna be in LA. You're like, can I please come on
Starting point is 00:07:09 because I'm gonna be in LA. Surrounded the fucking thing. And then we're like, all right, booked you. And you were like, oh, except for I'm not in LA, I'm in the computer, which is the only thing I like. So if you need to talk about TV shows for an entire fucking hour then fine That's what we're gonna do no skin off my chin twin. Let's do the damn thing
Starting point is 00:07:31 Shows preference. I have no preference and I would have loved to be there in person, but it wasn't safe And you did another show about TV shows Another whole podcast about it another show or you TV shows Yeah, I don't even know what you mean by that. Did you do a whole podcast about TV shows? Is this me? Kevin, is this me? Is it only Hayden or is it the whole world?
Starting point is 00:07:54 Sometimes it is me. It's not you this time. Zach, I know you said- I didn't think it was me. I know you said no preference. You might want to go to system preference, make sure your headphones are working. Yeah, no, I heard you said no preference you might want to go to system preference makes your headphones are working Yeah, no, I heard you I just don't know what you're talking about I did another show about TV shows Didn't you do a whole entire podcast talking about TV shows? Yeah, it's like
Starting point is 00:08:17 I've I've done I know I know that Zach said no preference But maybe he should have said I thought like I understand like I did hear that but I But maybe he should have said. And I understand, I did hear that, but I think maybe he should have said system preference. System preference. See if his headphones are working. Just to check on whether the headphones were working or not. The way you just said it, it sounded like you said, nope reference.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Have you guys seen, nope? Okay. The film by Jordan Peele. Okay. Yeah, I watched it the way it was meant to be watched as well part of it on a plane What do you think That seemed unfinished
Starting point is 00:08:57 Yeah, it's it's there were simultaneously a lot of ideas in it and yet none of them really landed for me Simultaneously a lot of ideas in it, and yet none of them really landed for me. Because the plane landed before the movie was over. Why, so like, you brought up TV shows, and now I'm trying to like engage with the, like the subject that you introduced again. Yeah, you were just like, oh, sorry, can I grab that real quick?
Starting point is 00:09:22 It's the goal post, by the way. You mind if I grab that real quick? It's the goal post, by the way. You mind if I grab that real quick and just put that over here? You mind if I just truck that over here? You don't mind if I just move that over here? Just get it out of our way. It's like, well, actually it wasn't in my way. It was what I was aiming for. Mind if I just take this across state lines real quick?
Starting point is 00:09:41 Pinching the goal post, picking it up, putting it somewhere else. It's not really fair to us. I genuinely have no agenda. You're too big to even be playing this with us if you can do that. That's too big. If you can pick up, if you can just pitch the goalpost
Starting point is 00:09:54 and pick it up. You can actually remove the goalpost by pinching it. And carry it across state lines. I'm sorry, you can't play. We should be in different leagues because then that means that you're a giant. So do you wanna talk about camp games? It's not like discriminatory or whatever,
Starting point is 00:10:05 but like it's too huge to be playing. I don't wanna get in the weeds on like who can compete in what sport or whatever. It's not the show, like we never wanna be having that kind of conversation. That's not a topic I wanna engage with. But if you can pinch the goal post and- I'll go out on a limb.
Starting point is 00:10:21 If you could pinch the goal post like this, pick it up, you're just two fingers, you can pick it up, pull it out of the ground and put it somewhere else. Where does it end? I just don't think that's going to make it an interesting competition for anyone. Okay, I won't play.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Okay, Jesus Christ. Fucking damn it, dude. That was hard enough. So thank you for being on, Zach. Zach Cherry's here, everybody. He's obsessed with TV shows. and we're obsessed with him. We love this guy. We can't believe he came back, sort of,
Starting point is 00:10:50 through the computer. We're supposed to be here. So. I would've loved to be there. I would've loved to be there in person. And you were on a whole other TV show, about, you had not had a show about TV shows before? You did a whole podcast just talking about TV shows?
Starting point is 00:11:04 I would love to talk about this, but I don't, I really don't know what you're talking about. Well, Zach, have you been on any other podcasts lately? I did Doughboys. Kevin. While I was out there. Release this man. I'm gonna play you something
Starting point is 00:11:22 that's to refresh your memory. Maybe refresh your memory. Are we jumping the episode though zack how did you come to severance and you get cast my recollection is I sent in a tape first. I got a call back. Pause it real quick. And at the time. This is, yes. It's your fucking life, man. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:47 It's your life. This is not some. This is not some gotcha. My recollection is, it's just like. This is not some gotcha. Then why didn't you admit it before? Yeah, why didn't you just say, oh, I was just on a podcast all about TV shows.
Starting point is 00:12:00 To describe that as a show. That's all I talk about all the time. About TV shows is wildly inaccurate. Oh, it's not exactly a TV show. I mean, I guess, sure, technically it's a TV show. It's very elevated. Certainly it's nominated in categories with other TV shows. Well, yes, it is a streaming show.
Starting point is 00:12:15 I don't think that quite does, does. It's a little different from what you're used to. But I don't think it's merely a TV show. You made it seem like I was recently on some pop culture show where I talked about numerous TV shows. It's not pop culture, actually. It's just culture. It's art. I think we did win a Peabody, so it is elevated. Peabody. Peabody. Yeah. So yes, I did an episode of the Severance Podcast recently.
Starting point is 00:12:41 If you want to talk about that, I'm happy to talk about that. Great. So, play the rest of the clip actually. Before we jump into the episode though, Zach, how did you start at it over? I like this part. My recollection is I sent in a tape first, then I got a callback, and at the time, I remember I was working on the show the last OG
Starting point is 00:13:06 And my call back was on a day that I was shooting, but they let me leave In the middle of the day and then come back so I I left and I remember I was sitting in the waiting room and I saw Ben walk by and kind of how the podcast started I thought I would have a few more minutes of- Can I just say, like, I know, like, I've seen the show, I've seen Severance, and I know it's like, it's a streaming show, you are supposed to kind of like, suffer along with the characters in this way. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:13:36 It's not all supposed to be like, this isn't Becker, you know? And like, I was making fun of that before, but like, I get it. I don't get the reference. It is different. This, to me- That's before my time, Becker, you know, and like, I was making fun of that before, but like, I get it. I don't get the reference. It is different. This to me- That's before my time, Becker. This is too far.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Becker is timeless. I cannot be living this moment with this character. It's really long, man. Sure, well- The answer is long. The answer's getting long. If I'm Adam Scott, I'm just, here's what's going on in my head. I saw Ben walk by and kinda like the podcast started.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Can you play the clip? I don't know how the podcast started. Can you play the clip again? And I'm gonna be Adam Scott's inner monologue. Can I just say, there's context. I'm gonna be Adam Scott's inner monologue. Before we jump into the episode though, Zach, how did you come to Severance?
Starting point is 00:14:19 How did you get cast? My recollection is I sent in a tape first. Oh shit. Then I got a callback. Oh my god, I fucked up. My recollection is I sent in a tape first Then oh my god, I fucked up all back and at the time fuck What do I do now show the last oh gee? Oh my god was great a day that I was shooting But they let me leave get out of this in the middle of the day and then come back still going How's it still going? And I remember I was sitting in the waiting room and I saw Ben walk can I give him the wrap it up signal does he even know it does he even know a hand signal for
Starting point is 00:14:51 wrap it up and then Ben was just like should I kick my drink over yeah I guess and then I went in and read they didn't like it they would have made my laugh he'll be like this is over now now, my story's over. It's still going. No, laugh didn't do it. Nothing would ever come of it and sat in silence for a little bit. And then, and I actually got a lot of good feedback about this episode. Do I have to hurt myself?
Starting point is 00:15:12 How bad am I willing to hurt myself? A lot of people liked that episode. A lot of people liked it. So let me just back up, because you said something that I thought was- Maybe it's part of the larger puzzle in some way that I didn't understand. Hayes, you said something I thought was interesting, so let me ask my first question.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Who the fuck are you talking to? You're asking Hayes, though? You. Who the fuck are you talking to on the show? I'm talking to my coworkers, Adam Scott and Ben Stiller. Hey, wait, but Adam doesn't do podcasts. I don't think Adam appears on podcasts. That was actually my confusion too, and I could definitely see how you would think it was him.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Because you said, I'm gonna be Adam Scott's inner monologue, and I said, it did sound like him, but I know he doesn't do podcasts, so what did they do there? Is this like an AI? Sorry, I was being Adam Scott's inner monologue and I said, it did sound like him, but I know he doesn't do podcasts, so what did they do there? Is this like an AI? Sorry, I was being Adam Scott's inner monologue listening to the show at home. Because he doesn't do podcasts. He's a fan.
Starting point is 00:16:17 He does a lot. I think he enjoys them. I haven't heard him on here, but he's been on a bunch. Because he has a whole series with Scott. Okay, this is so crazy. And then he does go on Comedy Bang Bang. And now he does another show. This is like TV shows again.
Starting point is 00:16:33 I think he's talking about TV shows. And he loves TV shows so much that he's like a podcast is a TV show. Or actually rather that a TV show is a podcast. And then Ben actually does do podcasts, but he doesn't once, and then he's kind of tough to follow up with. I haven't experienced that with either of them, so.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Okay. That's not been my experience. So you're talking about this show on here. We've talked about this show on here before. Have you figured out what the fuck is going on with this thing? I'm looking at it still and I'm going, what do they even think they're doing or what's happening
Starting point is 00:17:16 or when is the show gonna start, you know what I mean? Right, I do, I remember you had some issues with, I don't know if it was your TV or your computer. I don't think it was. First of all, let me say this. I think it is on the computer sometimes. It is on the computer. That's not a TV show. That's not.
Starting point is 00:17:38 And you this guy would know Zach is doing a damn residency in the computer. Can I ask what did you you when five nights a week when Kevin sent you the success file? What did you watch that on? Because of where it's sort of a long story, but but ultimately my wife's watch Okay So that was where I ended up, that ended up being the screen where I could get it to work. I'm, if you wanna walk us through that process, I'm happy to hear it.
Starting point is 00:18:13 I had to set it up, so I'm happy to take it from here. Yeah, yeah, that would be great. I, I don't, I couldn't, I was scared, as Hayes will tell you. I was able to plug in an external laser disk drive Into his wife's into his wife's watch yes without waking her up Mm-hmm, okay
Starting point is 00:18:37 so My advice to you would be the next time you try and watch Severance, just use that same setup. I do just want to say like, I almost got caught because the next day, Sean was like, you know, she wears it to sleep to like monitor her heart rate. And she was like, oh, like my heart rate's a little different than it was normally, but it turned out that when the show was playing on her watch, her heart rate
Starting point is 00:19:03 got boring-er. Yeah. It measured, the measurement said that it got boring-er. The heart rate got boring-er. The heart rate was perfectly matching Mm-hmm. something that was boring-er, that even being asleep. Somehow the rhythms of the show made her heart rate
Starting point is 00:19:23 boring-er than it was normally. When she's just from sleeping having her heart do what it does. Now, it feels like you think that's an insult to me, but you were watching the show. You were watching Success. I was. You were watching my show. No, I never said it was an insult.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Mr. Defensive, everything's so personal, it revolves around you. No, you just suggested Succession as a show to watch. You were watching these success videos that Kevin sent you. I haven't seen them. I don't know what that is. So if that's boring, that has nothing to do with me.
Starting point is 00:19:57 I didn't say it was boring. I said my wife's heart rate was measurably boringer than during sleep. Well, maybe next time, show her severance and see what her heart, see how her heart responds. I wasn't showing her anything, Zach. No one showed her anything. You're such a terrible listener.
Starting point is 00:20:16 And so much of acting and so much of performing and comedy is rooted in listening to your scene partner, observing, reacting honestly, and what you're doing now is you're taking the goalpost. Pinching it. Pinching it. And moving it somewhere else. That's not my intention. And now I've gotta show her severance
Starting point is 00:20:40 because the suck session heart rate changed. You don't have to do any she was asleep and her watch I'm gonna be I was I don't want to do an external laser about this drive well I'm not going to the story of how you got the fucking show Sean was kneeling on the floor his chin resting on the bed, so as to hold his head up easier. Okay, well. Watching the show. My advice would be the next time that you
Starting point is 00:21:14 try to watch Severance. I was oven mitts. You don't have to show your wife. I was oven mitts taped to my hands inside a sleeping bag the way Mike Brubiglia sleeps, just because I'm a fan. I don't have a sleepwalking issue, but I just am such a fan of his work.
Starting point is 00:21:28 And it just, I thought, that sounds really cozy to me. And so that was like another big reason that like, I was never gonna be able to get this thing to play if Hayden didn't come over. I got really scared. But I just decided to try it, you know? So sleeping bag on. I have a sleepwalking issue.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Oven mitts like taped on. Oh yeah. You do? Yeah, I do. It have a similar other minutes like taped on oh Yeah, you yeah, I do it's a framed copy of vulture magazine from when they talked about that thing for the fucking 500,000th time mm-hmm when I finally officially fell asleep just seeing it even mentioned When they talked about Mike Burbiglia's movie That and it was not just a movie, my friend. It was every form of media imaginable. They talked about 500,000 times and I got a framed copy of that issue. That's my sleepwalking issue.
Starting point is 00:22:16 If they invent a new form of media tomorrow, it will, the first thing that will debut on that will be some version of this sleepwalking issue that this man has It hasn't made it to TV yet. So I have I have not seen it. That's the one they're working on that one That's the that's the last frontier TV's dead this TV show it's fucking dead And so I mean, it's hard to imagine where you go from here in this interview, but I am curious. Yeah, I wanna see what the movie is.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Yeah, I will say, this interview, there's context, it's not about just TV shows in general, it's about the process of making the show severance, streaming show. Oh, okay, the context, that's what I was missing. So, set up this conversation. Adam Scott. Just give Scott the context
Starting point is 00:23:05 Well, there's the setup is the rest of the episode asks you how you got to just go listen to that Just go listen to that Well, they're not gonna do that. They probably already did Just when you told them you think they just went and did it right then you actually think they did that is that possible It's possible. Do you like? Zach, you know, the star of Better Man, Robbie Williams, featured as a monkey in that film,
Starting point is 00:23:38 once had an album called The Ego Has Landed. And I think the same thing just happened on this show. Your arrogance, your disgusting narcissism, and I know that word is used too much these days, to believe that everyone hearing this has already listened to that episode of the show about TV shows that you did? It's so insane. Well, we've been talking about it.
Starting point is 00:24:08 You played a piece of a clip over and over. If they wanted to hear the rest of it, I assume they would go check it out on their own. Can I get the short version of it? Honestly, yes. Well, then we don't have anything to do now, Zach. The short version of what? The short version of that.
Starting point is 00:24:24 I don't know, the answer to the question, what happens on the podcast. I was cast on the show. I was cast on the show. That's the short version. Is that better than the version you heard? Are you more satisfied with that? Me personally?
Starting point is 00:24:39 I mean, I'm not like the kind of critic that just gives something like, this gets an A, this gets a B, whatever. No. I'll just be like, yeah, they both suck. Okay. It's not a competition between the two. Split the difference. Like this one's bad, that one's bad in a different way.
Starting point is 00:24:55 This one is more respectful of my time. That one, I guess, is like, I mean, I can relate to you more, because you're kind of soaking up like oh my god AI Adam Scott is talking to me like when am I gonna get this chance again, you know You know, it's a crazy statistic over 10,000 chemicals have entered you let me answer. Okay, sorry Just if you want to I have something to say after that but yes, let me do it again. You know what's a crazy statistic? Okay, hang on, let me think, I probably know one.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Oh, Kevin, turn the TikTok camera on. This one's gonna be good. Yeah, I know what's a crazy statistic. Over 70% of all statistics are made up. Okay, we didn't get me to be the first part of it. Oh, the TikTok camera, I mean, it's okay. Okay. You set it up for yourself, so it's okay.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Just, yeah, okay. Over 10,000 chemicals have entered our US food supply, yet the EU limits this to just 300 additives. Turn the TikTok camera off for this, because this seems like this isn't gonna be as good for the TikTok at all. This is not gonna be good for the TikTok at all. This is more of an ad.
Starting point is 00:26:05 I personally don't have time to sift through ingredient labels to see what's in my food, which is why I love using Thrive Market. This is another thing, Kevin. Kevin, did you find this ad for me? Because I have Thrive Market. I did. How did you do that, Kevin?
Starting point is 00:26:22 Makes it so easy to find better options without the hassle. You can do the healthy swap scanner in the app. You can scan an item and it will suggest cleaner, healthier grocery alternatives. And I am sorry about that, that I know you have been kinda handling the finances for our business over the last few weeks. Thank you for saying that.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Do you wanna just give me a rundown on it now and then maybe going forward I can start to chip in, but just like it would help to know where we're at kinda baseline on our finances. We are in debt. Okay, and that's the type of thing you can learn by using Found. Found is a business banking platform
Starting point is 00:31:11 that lets you effortlessly track expenses, and we have, that's something we have? A lot. Okay. Manage invoices and prepare for taxes. And tax season. I didn't know we had to do that. That was like.
Starting point is 00:31:27 So found. Yes, found would have helped me with that. You can even set aside money for different business schools and control spending with different virtual cards. I've saved so much money because found helps me identify tax write offs and I've saved so much time that I can now devote to chasing new opportunities and doing the work I enjoy and I'm really sorry that I've been just like chasing new opportunities and doing the work I enjoy. And I'm really sorry that I've been just like
Starting point is 00:31:45 chasing new opportunities. Well, you, and that's why I put, I put chasing new opportunities in quotes or just new opportunities in quotes. Oh, and by the way, other small businesses are loving found too. This found user said, found is going to save me so much hate,
Starting point is 00:31:58 it makes everything easier. Expenses, income, profits, taxes, invoices even. This, I wish I had that. Or why he said it like that. Yeah. Andenses, income, profits, taxes, invoices even. I wish I had that. Or why he said it like that. Yeah. Ed Foud has 30,000 five-star reviews just like this.

Don't put this one on. Join thousands of small business owners who have streamlined their finances. Foud. Hatings. Whoa. Hollywood Hamburg. Kevin, is there any more? See, don't put this one out. Join thousands of small business owners who have streamlined their finances without.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Hatings. Whoa. Hollywood Hamburg. Kevin, is there any more? Any other clips? So after that, we kind of go back to the workstation and Dylan is teaching Helly how they do their job and everything,
Starting point is 00:32:37 but he starts showing off all the incentives he's earned from being so good at his job. Is this, this is the only way you could think to get Adam on your show? Is that what's. Is this this is the way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way You don't know what happened here. They have to train AI Adam Scott to get you to remember what's even happening on your own show Every day and to get you I didn't hear you get you because I was hell up Yeah, you know I'll pay pretend that it's on a podcast about it. I finally understand what's going on here So if you guys if this is how this is the only way I think I understand what's going on here You said no preferences
Starting point is 00:33:22 You should have said system preppers as should have said system preferences, brother. Make sure your damn headphones were working. Okay, play the clip again. You just said you didn't hear the clip. I'm sorry. Play the clip. Play the clip again. So after that, we kind of go back to the workstation
Starting point is 00:33:34 and Dylan is teaching Helly how they do their job and everything, but he starts showing off all the incentives he's earned from being so good at his job. Zach. Okay, can I just, I just want to check something here. I thought it was kind of rude in the podcast when AI Adam Scott was talking that you chimed in
Starting point is 00:33:53 and said, that's me, I play the character Dylan. I understand he's an AI, but like he is actually the star of the whole show. Still some respect. And I also say like, one thing that is distressing to me is like- I was trying to give you context for that. I wouldn't be listening to this. Don't be thinking about me when you're doing this podcast.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Excuse me. In the moment, just now, I was trying to give you context for what was happening. When I'm- Because you've been very confused. When I'm listening to this, if you have your way, I'm gonna stay confused until the day I die, which if you have your way, it'll be very soon, I'm listening to this, if you have your way, I'm gonna stay confused until the day I die, which if you have your way, it'll be very soon, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Mm-hmm. So I'm, yeah, that's how we play it, huh? I do not want you to die. I don't want you to die. I'm ambivalent. So as I'm listening to this clip, even knowing that the Adam Scott is AI, you can just hear in the way
Starting point is 00:34:43 that he's asking this next question that he had to listen to the answer to the first one. Isn't it just palpable? Like, he just seems to have lost. That might have been earlier in the podcast. I don't even know. A certain will to carry on, you know?
Starting point is 00:35:04 And it actually gives you like a sympathy for these, you know, like, they don't have souls per se, necessarily. No, but they still have an accumulation of experience. Yes, if they can learn. And it impacts them the way it would impact anyone. Mm-hmm. Whoa. Hollywood handbook. Nor these incentives.
Starting point is 00:35:23 Yeah, that's a big thing for Dylan. And I remember when I first started working on the show, I didn't ask a ton of extra questions about what we know about Dylan. So early on, this is kind of it. You learn that he is the type of guy who is really obsessed with hitting his marks at work, basically, and that informed a lot about him. I'm talking about my character, Dylan.
Starting point is 00:35:51 And what did you say he was obsessed with hitting his what at work? His marks. I was referencing Mark, the character. So, Mark's is something that an actor hits, and also, there's a character named Mark, as you just said. So like what are you talking about? I think sometimes when you chime in and say,
Starting point is 00:36:13 this is me, Zach the actor, this is me, the character Dylan, I think sometimes what you think is Dylan is actually Zach. I thought it was pretty clear based on the. Dylan does not know about the marks. He can't see those That's right, but he has goals that he's trying to hit He might refer to and let me guess he's pinching them and taking them across state lines Look
Starting point is 00:36:37 without without really having like seen the show in any kind of Measurable I gave you some I gave you advice on how to fix that in any kind of you know actionable way What I can say is When I'm listening to this I can't translate just from having been in the biz for a Day or two myself We're telling us this is Sean talking right now when you're telling us. This is Sean talking right now.
Starting point is 00:37:05 When you're telling us. Yeah, I didn't, it was early on, I didn't really ask a lot of questions about who Dylan is. And what you're really saying is, I wasn't really doing my job. Sure, that's what she would think about it. But the check's still cleared.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Is that, so I'm not as familiar with your work on camera, Sean. When you prepared for the role of... I'm not fucking talking about it nonstop like you. I'm not doing a whole fucking podcast about it every other day. Yeah, well, you weren't invited to. But when you prepared for the role, what was your role on Parks and Rec, Bjorn Lerpes or something?
Starting point is 00:37:49 His name is Matt Murbils. Matt Murbils, okay. So did you ask a lot of questions going in about Matt Murbils? Endless. Endless. Like what did you ask? Constant. Where am I?
Starting point is 00:38:04 Where am I? Where am I? Well usually that's- Why is this happening? You can get that from the script. What's my secret? Why is this happening? Who am I hiding the secret from? Are they gonna catch me? Do I secretly wanna be caught?
Starting point is 00:38:20 For the secret? The point of the after secret is that you keep it secret. That's two secrets. I know, but you have to ask what it is. I don't think that's usually how people do it. What's this guy's favorite camp game? You know what I mean? Just dig in. Sure. Just like there's meat on the bone.
Starting point is 00:38:36 I would ask for months leading up to that, I would recreate Matt Merble's commute to work every morning just to get used to the route, you know what I mean? So you flew to Pawnee and... Mm-hmm. Flying to Pawnee is not part of his commute because he lives there. Right, you flew out once and then you drove back and forth.
Starting point is 00:39:01 Mm-hmm. From his home to his work. So I had to get his address. That can't have been worth it. I had to find out what the office was. What's the IG badge situation getting into the room? It's not all about the money for everybody, Zach. For some of us, it's actually about the art on screen.
Starting point is 00:39:20 And when you watch the episode and you see that I was nodding my head so much while people were talking that they were unable to create any sort of continuity when they come back and forth to me, you'll understand that it really wasn't about some sort of financial thing, some reward, some getting more work out of this.
Starting point is 00:39:39 It was about in that moment saying yes to the moment. I respect that, I respect that. I do, I respect that. I was ready to sort of jump all over you about your process. And you know who was in the scene? Adam Scott. And speaking of jumping all over, I interrupted him pretty hard one take
Starting point is 00:39:56 and I could feel that he felt that. I just had something I wanted to get off and boy oh boy did I get it off and man was it a little bit quiet at the end of that take and that is that hasn't been my experience working with him so then well your guy is like not ever not at all your guy like seems to not even know the moment is happening let alone saying yes to it I mean like your like, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I've, I Yes. And so your opinion of my performance is that
Starting point is 00:40:45 I don't even know the moment is happening? I mean, look, if I'm in a scene with the Severance Snape, himself, to me, that's the moment. That's the moment. That's the moment. And I'm- I'll give it up for that. I'll give it up.
Starting point is 00:41:09 When that moment's happening, there's only one thing to say, and that is, yes, doggy! Big nobs! Big, violent nobs. You know what I mean? Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:41:24 Now, that is really interesting. I think that would have been interesting. That wasn't, that was never in the script. And it never felt earned to me, just being there. You need, I'm sorry, you need like every body motion in the script for you? I was more speaking to the yes doggy. I have to move around sometimes.
Starting point is 00:41:48 What am I getting? You actually say yes doggy, you just do big nods. Yes. And you do a little, a little. You feel the yes doggy. A little oh. I'm sorry, I was not understanding the note. Sure, that's something I could have done.
Starting point is 00:42:03 It didn't, it never felt like the show needed it Okay, well don't feel like anything. I'm looking at the fucking show. There's nothing on screen I Wish I wish I'd been able to be there in person because I could have showed you how to do you weren't even I would You weren't even in person on the show you did that Computer do my god you're obsessed with being in the computer. It's a sci-fi show. You're really just all snuggled up in there, aren't you? Good gravy, my guy.
Starting point is 00:42:31 It's a sci-fi show. I'm gonna be coming to set today. I'm cozy in the computer. Well, I was really sick, so. Damn. I'm sorry, man. Jesus Christ. What'd you get, a virus?
Starting point is 00:42:44 Yeah. Four more clips. I'm sorry, man, Jesus Christ. What'd you get, a virus? Yeah. Four more clips. I'm sorry, man, that sucks. Hello. Hollywood handbook. So then the melon party actually starts. And Zach, why does Dylan love the melon party so much? I think it's all just, you know, he's just focused on.
Starting point is 00:43:00 This guy could teach you a little less about about jumping the Jumping your your cue there. Mm-hmm. He's not done. Mm-hmm You kind of started But he wasn't done and you can feel him shut the fuck down. He's even that's it for the oh, okay I guess you don't need me here. He's clocked out That's it for the episode. Oh, okay, I guess you don't need me here. He's clocked out. Sorry. I guess that's fair.
Starting point is 00:43:30 I didn't feel that there was a lot more coming from that question. Even now you don't feel it. Yeah, I guess you don't. Wow, even now listening back you don't feel it. Oh, wow. Let me hear it again, Kev. Big dog. So then the melon party actually starts.
Starting point is 00:43:48 And Zach, why does Dylan love the melon party so much? I think it's all just, so if you listen closely, he actually did finish his question. No, he was gonna say- You gotta listen pretty close. Why does Dylan love the melon party so much in the show? Yeah, well he does say under his breast order, do the show? That's why he was going to say that. Yeah, well he does say under his breast,
Starting point is 00:44:06 sort of, do you think, but I think he was gonna say, do you think it's maybe because, and then lay out his own premise of why maybe Dylan loves the melon party so much. And do you hear, even under duress, the stank he puts on melon party the second time he says it, he knows there's something juicy and delicious in there just like the melon So hey, you think he was gonna clarify that he means in the show
Starting point is 00:44:31 Yes, that would have helped me because I didn't know what the fuck was going on. You felt my answer didn't address that Well, I'm listening and I'm like, why are we talking about this? Yeah, what is it? It can't be that this is a show that's happening somewhere else because why are we doing it here? None of this was in the show. It takes the same amount of time to just do it over there. Why don't we just do that?
Starting point is 00:44:55 By the way, it's scary. It's terrifying. The podcast clips we're hearing are scary? Yes, all of it. The show, the show is basically all ghosts. And then you're talking about the show as if I've seen something that was never there. The clips are bone shreddingly terrifying.
Starting point is 00:45:12 It's like being, it's like having your entire reality pulled out from beneath you because I'm going, well, I watched the show, dog shit, nothing happened. There was nothing on the screen. You didn't watch the show. And now I'm hearing these well I watched the show, dog shit, nothing happened, there was nothing on the screen. You didn't watch the show. And now I'm hearing these guys talk about it, and it's like, they're going, oh the melon party, I'm like, that didn't fucking, that's not in it.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Kevin, can you bring up a clip on your phone and go show Sean a clip of the show right now, please? Just a second. Okay, so this is what it takes to actually move units at Apple these days. Oh boy, we're having people tricking. This is not a trick. I'll say it. If we're going to talk about the show, I want Sean to have even one frame to understand what-
Starting point is 00:46:02 Into purchasing Apple TV Plus. Okay. You can find a trailer, it doesn't have to, and the first eight minutes are free. This is like one of these pig sucking scams or whatever they call it, you know? And season one is free on the road. And I've heard that they do those on the computer.
Starting point is 00:46:19 And they trick you into. Pig sucking scams? Yeah, pig sucking scams, and they trick you to sending all your money like you just did with a simple dental So maybe that's what your friends were trying to do Sean at the at the camp at the camp games party Okay, so this says suck session the boys now it out to see who will take over the family vacuum empire I don't think after their mom retires and And so this actually kinda slaps. Okay, this is not what we wanna be seeing here.
Starting point is 00:46:49 Dicky Hearts is in it. And so I liked that. That was better than the first episode I watched for sure. So Kevin, I was talking about the set. I didn't see a melon party and maybe it's because it wasn't done. Well, you know what, Kevin, you wanna bring up Lemon Party and show it real quick?
Starting point is 00:47:07 That's blocked on here. Let's play another clip. That's blocked on here. Whoa. Hollywood handbook. I do love hearing you both talk about these other scenes because it's such a different world. Like, I didn't even interact with Audi World
Starting point is 00:47:22 for so much of the season that I love hearing about all this stuff. Cause I was talking about the show, in that little low ceiling basement. Were you reading these parts of the script? I was, I was reading everything, but I always say about this show more than any other. That was so completely obvious to the entire world.
Starting point is 00:47:43 I love everything at play, which is you going like, hey guys, you're kind of talking about a part that I'm not even fucking involved with and I'm the guest. But I actually love- Which is basically all you're saying. Yes. And then they go like, but you work for the show, you at least read it so you understood some of the like,
Starting point is 00:47:58 context of what else was happening, and you're like, yeah, totally, but you're doing a jerk-off motion. Yeah, I did not read any of the stuff I was reading. and you're like, yeah, totally, but you're doing a jerk off motion. Yeah, I did not read any of the stuff I was reading. I actually love, I was really inspired by the solidarity, especially kind of like in a moment like this in the world where people listen to that episode, everyone in the world knew
Starting point is 00:48:20 that you were lying your fucking face off to your boss in an AI version of another guy. And everyone just collectively decided, okay, we're just not gonna bring this up. Nobody talked about it. It's not the time. I go around in the city, not a single person. Everyone just collectively decided, okay, he lied,
Starting point is 00:48:48 he was lying, do we need to talk about this right now? I don't think we do. I don't think so, I don't think so. I also appreciated that, because I wasn't ready to, I didn't wanna have to like make shit up. I did. Yeah. I did. Oh, I was I was I did I was reading that you know what yeah, I
Starting point is 00:49:13 Was reading it like so crazy most definitely My eyes hurt from reading it so hard I Should have tried I should have said that hurt from reading it so hard. I should have said that. Um, I read some other parts and yes, I did read those too. I should have said that. I was, I was, I didn't want to admit it and I was a little stressed out and I didn't know how to respond and but yeah, I was glad they didn't push me on it and and thank you guys for supporting me in that you know and do people like when they come up to you or they like talking about how you lied or they like they have also in I
Starting point is 00:49:57 haven't got both on that yeah have decided to not talk about how you lied to your yeah no I haven't maybe it's because you won't stay in one place. This is the first I'm hearing about that, yeah. Whoa. Hollywood handbook. Experience of reading it and even being there shooting it, there's such a gap to when you finally see it. I'm lying about that, too.
Starting point is 00:50:19 It really comes alive when you see it in a way. I was in the computer. Other things I've worked on, it's felt more similar to the experience of making it. So even though I was reading it once I. Okay, so what I feel like this is like. So this is, yeah. You're reading this, you're making the show,
Starting point is 00:50:32 you're sitting there the whole time, be like, whoa, this is a fucking sack of crap. But then you're watching it like, oh fuck, okay, all right. I thought the question that preceded this was, they just went like, how do you feel about the Bible? And you went, well, the experience of reading it versus actually being there shooting it, which I thought, why are you, why did you do that?
Starting point is 00:50:57 Which one were you saying? You don't have to believe in all this stuff, but you don't have to shoot it. Can I hear it again, Kevin? I want to be clear. Which part was he saying was the part that sucked? Whoa. Hollywood ham.
Starting point is 00:51:08 Even being there shooting it, there's such a gap to when you finally see it. Like it really comes. So shooting it sucked too. So you were like sitting there, out of your marks. Well. And then you finally see it. Look, I mean, what am I gonna say? Call say call my account? I obviously oh thank God the check cleared
Starting point is 00:51:28 Okay, well, yes, I'll put up with this word about crap for another 20 that you you insist on being paid in the increments of 20 minutes It's it I will say I will say I have almost the the opposite experience being on this show Right where where it sucks doing it and then I hear it and it's even worse First of all That it that is that is the opposite how is that not the opposite The opposite would be if this were good. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:52:07 I apologize, I misspoke. Is it the, maybe is it the inverse? And he normally doesn't snore like, I mean, that's not a normal sound for him. He only does that when he's very stressed. You gotta do a lot to wrench that out of me. Oh. Is there a Lance Armstrong bracelet?
Starting point is 00:52:37 This? Yeah. Yeah, live strong, baby. Wow. That's cool. That's my guy, Lance. That's cool. I's my guy Lance. That's cool. I love Lance.
Starting point is 00:52:47 Yeah. Tell me what his whole deal is. What era? Bicycling. That's what you should have said when Adam Scott was like, talking about how you got on Severance. Yeah. I should have said what era.
Starting point is 00:53:10 What era. Yeah, what era. What era. What era. Cause the whole story is about two and a half hours. So. If you wanna hear the whole story, I'm happy to tell it here. Is that videotaping it? That show?
Starting point is 00:53:26 Sorry, what are you asking? Is that a video of it? Severance? Yes, you can watch it on Sean's wife's watch. Is that a podcast? Yes. Is that a podcast? Not for me. I was only in the audio. Okay. They did not have access to seeing me. And was only in the audio. Okay. They did not have access to seeing me.
Starting point is 00:53:48 And they filmed everyone else? I don't know. That's beyond my, I don't care. The massive lack of interest in anything. It's this computer. It's being inside the computer. This is your whole generation, Zach. One of his attentions, Panda Smithery.
Starting point is 00:54:04 It's just being inside the computer. This is your whole generation, Zach. He has won his attention span to smithereens. It's just being inside the computer and just no caring about it, ambivalent about whether I live or die, don't even want me to die. And then at the same time that that's going on, you don't know the podcast you're on. This is promotion for your show that you claim actually seeing it was different.
Starting point is 00:54:23 The first time I read the script for Severance was in 2019. I got it on my email, I got it on my computer, and said what- Sorry, turn off the clip, Kevin. Sorry, turn off the clip, Kevin. Shut it off. Thank you. You didn't need to go back to that story, I promise you. I promise you.
Starting point is 00:54:46 It felt like the show needed me to finish it and to expand out. I was sort of doing a prequel and then I was gonna finish it later. When you normally, when you shoot a show and then when you see it, it's the same normally? Seeing it as the same experience as shooting it, same experience as shooting it.
Starting point is 00:55:06 It feels like, yeah, it feels like I was there. Yeah, usually. And this one, it doesn't feel like you were there. Yeah. Could that be because there's nothing on the screen? Yeah, that hasn't been my experience. When I watch it, I can see it. This might be a, a, a dress situation situation a white and gold and to get to the bottom blue and blue and black different
Starting point is 00:55:29 Than when you were shooting it so when you were shooting it you can't see it I Didn't say it was the opposite. I just said it feels different. Whoa whoa whoa wait Okay toot toot this guy just fucking pulled all four dress colors off the dome. So the first time I started acting, actually, I was in the fourth grade. I had a chance to do what was called an operetta. I wanna play one last clip where Zach doesn't say anything,
Starting point is 00:56:00 but I feel like he should have. This is Ben talking about how Apple did not want Adam Scott in the show. Was at sort of at a loss. And then I said to them, just sort of like, without even talking to you, I said like, I sped the clip up just so you know. What if the guy read for you?
Starting point is 00:56:15 This is how it felt in the room. Then I went to you and I was kind of like, to me this foundation is like, I was just thinking myself in this situation. You know, if somebody said to me like, hey, I want you to do this part, and then like told you the part was yours, and I said, I actually could do read for the part.
Starting point is 00:56:28 Yeah. And I, but I asked you and you said yes. Yeah. So just to say right off the bat that Apple has been so great to all of us and to the show. And they've been terrific for me. And this has nothing to do with that. God, I wish I could have him on the show right now.
Starting point is 00:56:45 I wish we could watch it on the show right now. I wish we could walk up to him. The AI Adam? Yes. Yes. You could probably license it. Wait, so you, Kevin, you wanted Zach to get in there? I feel like he could have said like, no, no, no. No, no, no. Like, Apple betrayed my boy.
Starting point is 00:57:02 No, no, no, no, no, no. He's gotta say that? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. He's got to say that. Don't do that. No, Apple. No, Apple. No.
Starting point is 00:57:14 You thought I should have said that, Kev? You sound like me looking at our download analytics. Right. Right. Right? Right. Right. Right. Right.
