Episode Date: November 11, 2021

Sponsored by: ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/jrer This week we discuss Joe's podcast guests as always. Review Guest list: Cameron Hanes, Ari Shaffir and Gilbert Goyyfried Operator podcast...! Check it out During the 1-900 number craze of the Nineties, one company provided the vast majority of phone sex. American Telnet was an empire founded by the man who called himself “The Telephone Pimp.” He ran the company “like General Motors” and got filthy rich doing it. But for the (mostly) women who answered the calls and delivered fantasies 24-7, it was a different story. The powerful stigma against sex work was always lurking just beneath the surface, until it threatened to tear apart the whole company. Hosted by Tina Horn (Why Are People Into That?), OPERATOR is an eight-part series about big ambitions, Shakespearean-level corporate backstabbing, men and women at the cutting edge of a technological revolution...and on the front lines of a sexual one. Starting point is 00:00:44 What a bizarre thing we've created now with your hosts Adam Thorn my either the worst One go enjoy the show Hey guys and welcome to another episode of the J. R. E. R. V.U Big week we got camhains on we got Gilbert Godfrey Gilbert Godfrey and then Ari Shafia and and all his comedy nerd friends Mark Norman great getting ready for skankfest skankfest time the other guys I should I would love to go to a skank fest man
Starting point is 00:01:26 That sounds like a fucking party in half doesn't it Every day for sure For sure let's jump over to Cameron Hayes. Let's start out with him. What a legend like come on It's hard to get inspired by him. Like not to get inspired. I mean, not. Yeah, I love, I just will never Joe said people always want to put themselves in other people's shoes and say how do they do it? It's so easy, but they could do it.
Starting point is 00:01:59 And things like talking about being in campaigns shoes, like 16 miles before you even wake up. Another 10 at lunch and then come home and get a full lift session. And people are talking about they don't have time and they don't have and they don't have the motivation. You're like, uh, dude, you do two days in campaign shoes and you will not want to wear those shoes ever again. You put that into the lifetime. That's what I love what he said. He's like, and then you wake up and do it again. And then you wake up and do it again. We're in Arizona this past weekend and I climbed a mountain camel back mountain. I'm not sure if you're familiar with it. But it's a it's a it's a challenging hike, especially when it's warm out and you're climbing vertical quite a bit.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And if you don't know what to expect, it's a it's a challenge for sure, but once you get to the top, the reward is worth the pain, but I will say my shout out to my girl. She had no idea what she was getting her stuff into them. Like, what's going on this little hike? I was like, what's going on this little hike and I know that she knows and the people around me are like, fuck, camel back. That's ridiculous. Good stuff. sometimes though. It's better than I know how like intense something's gonna be because you know once you start you're like all right well I'm not gonna quit but if someone told me straight up like I'm gonna be climbing
Starting point is 00:03:17 I'm trying to be like maybe we let's go play mini golf she said like after the fact she's like I scaled the mountain today. I was like I know you'll never forget that for the rest of your life. You'll never forget that I bombed up this mountain that. And a lot of points for you could I mean you could do some serious day and it's not kill yourself if you're not fucking patient. Well talk about the right. Talk about mountain honestly.
Starting point is 00:03:40 They opened up the pod with that mountain line the Rogan saw. Yeah. And how terrifying oh, so I went hunting last week Thursday Friday Saturday with an ex-Greenberry buddy of mine Just savage like this guy is we he just was like pick-in spots because he's been hunting his whole life. So he knows what he's doing. And I don't know like a great deal about it. So I'm still learning. But he's like, right, we're going up here.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And once we climb this like elevation between these like bits of private land, because you got to look on the map. And it has, it shows you like where private land is, where public land is. And you can't go on a private land. So you got to squeeze between some private land sometimes. The only way to get into this area that was really open and really good for hunting was to basically climb a mountain. And it was so steep and I didn't have a strap for my rifle so I'm holding it in one hand
Starting point is 00:04:47 like Traversing like these rocks with the other and like yeah, and it was like weird rock like Montana I don't know what the mountains are made of but they are crumbly as all hell You know, it's like it's one thing when it's really sturdy But I'm just like holding stuff and it like off and I'm like, dude, I'm not the biggest fan of heights. Like this was not a good day. And he's just like, keep going.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Just go, just sad. Just go, just go. So we get to the real, like the very top of this thing. After like I'm talking four hours, we probably did, it was probably like 800 feet of elevation Which is a lot, you know when you climb and slowly Oh, dude so many rest so many terrifying moments we get to the top and there's these it looks like these big Caves in this rock and I'm like what could be in there like a back of it
Starting point is 00:05:43 And he's like bears wouldn't be up here, don't worry about it. I'm like, okay. And then we're walking around and we see these giant mountain lion tracks everywhere. Dude, I did not know that a pole of any creature could be that big. He's like pointing him out to me and I'm like, so you're telling me that?
Starting point is 00:06:02 It's where the, yeah, we're at the top of the mountain. And there is a mountain line somewhere you just don't worry. They won't come out till night. Dude, I could not stop looking behind me. I was so terrified. I don't like this is not the best time ever. That video that Joe showed multiple times about that guy and my gun. That's just yeah. It's just becoming one with mother nature. So scary. I do like the way the way they the way hunters talk about the I don't want to say attachment. I should say relationship that they have with the animal and the description that Joe provides and can provides. I was always like, I don't want to say anti-hunter, but I feel like I'm such a hypocrite if I'm going to eat a friggin turkey sandwich or whatever the fuck you know what I mean. It's like you got to pick one way. So it's like I respect the
Starting point is 00:07:15 craft and I respect the approach and I respect. He's talking about the moment and all the preparation that goes into it and the respect that they have for the animal and how they want it to die as quickly and as painlessly as possible. It's like, when you hear about that narrative, I mean, still, I don't want to see anything die, but if you're using it for food and to take care of your family and to take care of your friends and to provide, I mean, it's hard to argue. Yeah. And you know, people are talking to me about my like first rifle hunt. So this was recently my first rifle hunt, right?
Starting point is 00:07:52 And they were like, look, you might get something in your crosshairs that's like an animal that you want. You know, it's everything that is like, you have the license for it. Like it's the creature you went, you know, it's everything that is like, you have the license for it, like it's the creature you went out there for, but like something will feel wrong about it, like just feel it, like that's what multiple hunters said, like it might not feel like the right kill.
Starting point is 00:08:18 And I'm just, the whole time I was just thinking, you know, because I was another, so I didn't know, I was like, pff, whatever, dude, if I get something in my crosshairs, I'm gonna take it. Like, I'm out there to do it. Yeah, and I had a bar. Did you have that? But it was like kind of a small one. But it wasn't just that it was that. It was like the way it kind of came out, it was really close. And, you know, we have multiple days left and it just, just the way it kind of just sat there, it just didn't feel right, so I didn't take it.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I didn't take the shot, but I didn't understand what they were talking about until that happened. I was like, I don't think this is my kill today, and I didn't do it. That'd be a rough character moment if the animal reached out and felt that it was like, felt comfortable enough to be around you that that be a rough This thing, no, it's just not the right time. So, you know, I'm learning, I'm learning, I'm new to it, but I want to learn, and, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:30 I'm trying to learn off the best people that I can. So, you know, to have a real like respect for what's going on out of that. I wasn't saying, I bet. The camaraderie that has to be developed in that kind of scenario, we are out there with like one or two other guys just silent the whole time and like even in the silence the bonds grow that much closer. My buddy was telling me that was an army ranger. He was like I think I've made mention of this before too. He's like I knew what my buddy's hair smelled like like that's how close he was in contact with these people at all times. Like he knew what he was thinking his next thought before I don't want to say
Starting point is 00:10:09 before he thought it, but he could already like anticipate, you know what I mean? And it's being in those kind of scenarios and those tough situations that develop those kind of relationships that kind of don't necessarily need like- Yeah, I could see it. I mean the guy I went out with, once we got going, he barely spoke at all. Everything was just like quiet movement and that was just accepted. Like, don't make a lot of noise.
Starting point is 00:10:33 And if anything, he'd like point at an area. He'd be like, you know, you kind of like glass over here, like glass here, but there was no talking. And it was like, I would just sit down, start glassing, you be on the other side of the hill. I didn't know how long you'd be. I didn't know if it was going to be 10 minutes or two hours, but it was just kind of, I guess, understood. So I just went with it. I'm like, all right, I guess this is how it goes. But great, great experience, great experience. Well, no, the weather was so hot, so hot up here in
Starting point is 00:11:08 Bozeman, that it's like they're all bedded down for the day, you know, like all day, there's just not the movement, but basically he was saying it's unusual. For what he's seen in all the years that he's hunted, it's unusual that they're not moving the way that they should at least where we went. So I was like, okay, I guess the town it is. Are they just grazing on grass? I guess so. Yeah. Yeah, they got it. Yeah, it's a bit like little shrubs probably bushes I Mean I guess I guess that makes more sense if I'm the animal to eat at night if I'm in a feel safer I wonder if the even fear fearing being hunted. There's so many. There's so few that are getting I don't know man They they're probably smarter than we give him credit for like I don't mean we as in hunters because I don't like
Starting point is 00:12:04 I don't count myself as one yet. At least I got a lot more to learn. But it's just like a layman. Yeah. I think we think that like dears and things are dumb. And I'm sure they're paying attention to a lot of things. I'm sure they're moving on to private land because they know they're safer. I'm sure they're moving around at different. They probably know what's going on more than we think. Dude, it's hard as hell. Think about it. We're out there with a rifle and we still can't kill them. I'm like, they're just running around naked in the woods. Imagine if you and I were running around naked in the woods and some other super intelligent creature
Starting point is 00:12:46 Had advanced weaponry and tried to kill us. It would take them about 14 seconds to find out down masses And the cams to cams better. He's doing all this shit with a bow on top of him. I mean Yeah, I I mean, yeah, he was talking about a shootout of his kids. I love that he gives me crazy shit. Well, you know, until like people at his work and his neighbors, and that's the media that Navy seal on his street that got injured. And he like gives him me. I had a name. I had a, yeah, it's best. I had a neighbor give me meat.
Starting point is 00:13:25 My first and only out burger this thus far, but there was a certain sense of, I won't forget this moment. You know what I mean? Grant, I've never had out before, so that's probably had something to do with it, but it's a gesture a lot of people don't. It's a cool thing to do.
Starting point is 00:13:43 You know, if you've got enough meat, like being able to give it away to people and you can't even see, that's a gesture a lot of people don't it's a cool thing. You know, you've got enough meat like being able to give it away to people And you can see is that's a really cool thing. I mean, it's great food, you know, really good food Absolutely It's it's interesting and this isn't going to send you vegan or vegetarian or anything But like whenever Joe talks about the instincts of the hunter. that we're all hunters at some point. It's like what is that science or how do you have that argument because I've had the conversation with multiple vegetarians and vegans that provide reasonable explanations to their side which I kind of don't necessarily side with
Starting point is 00:14:23 but I can. Well I mean you know fit I don't know how big the like our tribal existence was but I think that they think that the little tries are like 40 people that's kind of like somewhat sustainable so you have to think okay 20 man 20 women probably I mean I would imagine that at least all the men were hunting and you know even to say that It's like I don't even know. I'm sure a lot of the women went out there too You know if like if a woman in the village was like into it and good at hunting Why would you pick them over a guy that was like this guy is clumsy and useless He falls over everything like fucking Steve is useless.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Like you're gonna take one of the women with you. Fuck Steve. You know, so it's probably a lot more in our system. I mean Joe talked about it right with the fishing, you know, like a lot more people have fished than they have hunted, but when you get that fish, like there's that really fun excitement. And it's just something about like knowing that you're going to be able to be fed.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Like, it's interesting along those lines, I feel like I've finally been converted to the fact that I'd like to have a gun Like I think I don't know if I Have always said I don't need one I surround myself with this that me other I provide my I've given a lot of Excuse is not excuses, but a feasible reasons that I think have worked thus far But given the climate and what not like it seems like it's just I'd rather have the fucking umbrella. Yeah, yeah, you know, even though I live in LA, even though I live in LA, it never fucking rains. It's like, it's fucking some method once they come into my house, and he has a gun. I at least want an option. I know that sounds fucking a little bit dream. But a hold on. Does it? But it's already saying it in Venice. You don't even have a they won't come to your house.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Doesn't it? Unless they've stolen like a, you know, a thousand dollars. It doesn't to me. It's like that's something. Let's say sound though on the street. Right. And I mean, I get right. And I mean, I, if you're bigger than me or have a bigger or have a gun I at least want to be sober and have a gun and be able to fucking pop off a few shots I mean I mean I take my chance yeah something I think about a chance I mean I thought either that or like get one of those uh but I will say I got some you seen those that ones the cops have that like whip out yeah you don't need any training of those. You can just what people are that I want to go. I want to fair enough to
Starting point is 00:17:11 go to stand six feet. Get a longer extendable baton. I don't need to be oven some bump. I don't know. I'm just saying I'm giving you options. What do you think of camera? And you may have the footage of them and job that they force them to get a vaccine. That seems. Bro, it's it's I think that it's gonna. I don't know if it's wishful thinking or I just want
Starting point is 00:17:41 to believe it, but it seems like there's enough people pushing back at some point. People have taken up to refuse to dance against this. Not everybody's seeing it across the world. I mean, and I think I may have mentioned to it too, like I said, when Arizona, like it's so interesting, and I like hearing Cam say, I don't want to say I'm on anybody's side, but it makes sense to me That's what I'll say the narrative that they're talking about and the sentiment that they talk about makes sense to me
Starting point is 00:18:10 I'm not divisive and I don't want to make sides, but I may have mentioned to you I'm in Arizona and I and I'm having a conversation with a good a good friend of mine his his wife and they're not newborn But three or four-year-old child and I had it comes up, it seems like such a taboo conversation to have what people who you're on the fence with, like, are you vaccinated? I feel like it's only the people that aren't vaccinated that are asking other people, maybe, maybe not. But she was like, yes. And then I was like, and she's like, are you?
Starting point is 00:18:39 And I was like, no, and she's a nurse. And she's, she said, oh, and I, and I, we go into these facts about the efficacy and the booster and this, that and the other and my one buddy sitting there, he's like, he's like, it's funny. It's either this or it's like these other people that listen to Joe Rogan. And I'm like, hmm, funny, you say that. But it's such an interesting time that the Joe Rogan has become the most polarizing experience. And I was saying to you earlier, it's almost like he's become the new Trump to the left at this point when in reality he's he's he's been so left on so many things and so understanding like I don't want to suck
Starting point is 00:19:12 his dick but it's just like dude what are you talking about like did you have you listened like are you listening to what he's saying he's not trying to be once he's not trying to be right he wants to be informed he wants to make them like there he's it no he's in nobody's pocket. That's the thing. That's that's what I don't understand how these people are not understanding. There's no lobbyist that he's under. He's said I went to Spotify specifically so I could be free. You see what they're trying to do to do to do a free thinker. Oh, I should tell. I mean, they're trying to pull everyone in. They
Starting point is 00:19:41 want to make everyone an enemy. It's like like wait a minute. You're talking about like the young funny But everybody see everybody six grew up in DC like fighting for like Pete minority right suddenly he's the worst guy in the world Like calm on Like who are you even trying to fight against save it you are you even trying to fight against? Save it. Right. What in what are you fighting against? Because I like I said, I don't know these people.
Starting point is 00:20:11 I don't know if it's just they don't come across my path, but I don't know all these people. It's some people, I will say it seems like whenever they get the back, they feel virtuous. Other people that I like my buddies, like I was mentioned in you, though, I do, I just did it because like whenever they get the back, they feel virtuous. Other people that I, like my buddies, like I was mentioning to you, they're like, do I just did it because I need to travel. I get it from all angles and you pointed out a good point.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Like I can't give people blowback, or even the people that I wouldn't assume would get it. I can't blowback at them for getting it. Like why, why, why, that's not my place to do that. I mean, my initial response was that kind of. I'm like, I wouldn't suspect you to do that and follow this that and the other but at the same time It's like bro What kind of hypocritis that make me if I'm gonna pass judgment on a decision you made so I need to take a step back
Starting point is 00:20:53 I don't know. I don't want to make it black and white right people Have their right to pick their sides, and I I don't deem I Feel like if you choose to be like 100% vaccinated, masked up, God bless you. I am not mad at you at all. And you know what? Saying that sometimes, sometimes I see someone like driving their car with a mask on. And I think to myself, like, what an idiot. But this is just the private thought.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Like, I don't, I'm not going to stop them and tell them not to do that. Like that is your right. You're allowed to. But to tell other people that aren't doing it, I'm still going to make it. To be like that, that is, to me, that would be like me and you going around saying to the fat people, your fat work out, cause you're unhealthy and you're gonna injure us and hurt other people with all your comorbidities. Dude, that would be wrong too. All you can do is encourage.
Starting point is 00:21:57 You should never do it. Like if it's a close friend of yours and you're doing what Joe does with, but like a bit of personal fact shame and like Don't do it to someone you don't know you got like that's so fucked up Like you can't go up to just someone overweight and be like you know what you're the cause like that's so no Wrong right so the point is like let people but that's the good they need to be right? like let people be who they need to be, right?
Starting point is 00:22:28 People will do the people will do the people that you know. So what? I'm not gonna become a worse, more annoying person because they decide to be like, yeah, it's annoying, but I'm not gonna, I'm not telling other people what to do. It's not fair. You're right. And it's not right. And he is another thing that I kind of noticed.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And maybe it's not true across the board. And if you're listening and you don't have an example of this or like you have a better example, then yeah, maybe I'm wrong. But dude, I'm telling you, they ended the podcast with Cameron talking about carrying a hundred plus pound rock up a hill, right? Like, here's absolute hustle in the ice bath. Dude, I don't know people that are choosing this like really scared philosophy that exists and they're also pushing at this rate, right? They're not cold plunging five minutes a day plus so on a plus intense workouts. They're not cold plunge in five minutes a day, plus so on, a plus intense workouts. They're just not doing it. It just seems to me that
Starting point is 00:23:30 they've chosen like the most scared way to be and maybe the easiest answer. Like what's an easier answer? Like get the vaccine and wear a mask so you're safe or like get your ass in shape and like really hustle. As I'm walking up that mountain, I'm thinking to myself, and this may say, I'm fucking incredibly caveman-y. And I'm thinking, I'm looking at these plants all around me and I'm thinking, what are the essential things humans need? Food, water, exercise. That's all they need. That's how animals survive.
Starting point is 00:24:08 That's how all of nature. I left out the sun too. Sun, food, water. Well you are a cave man. So of course you think of it that way. But you know what? It's like I am saying exercise. He's kind of weird because back in the day we didn't quote and unquote me to exercise. We will fucking move him because it was the only way to exist You were out there. We can die if you didn't get it shit John. Yeah You're hunting that's exercise. That's the fucking The best exercise you can possibly have when you go out when you go out I'm not eating unless that's the fucking beginning of the sentence, then you're going to fucking find the food and you're going to fucking either be resilient
Starting point is 00:24:50 or you're going to die. Those are your only two options. So here in America, we have the option to either choose to make some decisions that will benefit you in the long term. I mean, and once they become habit, it's, we've talked about it, thousand times over, I will never stop talking about it. It's the most beneficial medicine for your mind, body, relationships across the board,
Starting point is 00:25:16 no matter what, hands down. No one ever did an hour long hard work out and just walked away and said, man, I really regret it. I feel like shit now. I was like, maybe, maybe if you like pull a muscle. I said no one would ever get it. But they'll say it sucks, but at least you fucking worked hard
Starting point is 00:25:34 enough to pull a muscle. That'll do. I never even use it. So you got to pull it. All right, let's jump over to, you know, Gilbert Godfrey. And yeah. Have you ever searched rocket launches online Gilbert Godfrey and Yeah Have you ever searched rocket launches online and where to buy them?
Starting point is 00:25:50 Well, you probably shouldn't now. I know most of you are probably thinking why don't you use incognito mode when online to do that Well, let me tell you something incognito mode does not hide your activity It doesn't matter what mode you use and how many times you clear your browsing history, your internet service provider can see every single website that you've ever visited. Dude, I got a deal on the console. Come on. What what a strange individual. He is. I was I was thinking there's a he was talking about it. There's like a handful of folks like him, care top. I don't know if he fits into that same category.
Starting point is 00:27:25 They were talking about certain people. You just like love to hate, which none of them really deserve any. Well, they easy to pick on a lot of murder. You know, because they just all characters. Yeah. It's like talking about like you write Barry Manelow like fucking Carrot Top. You know what I mean? Like you do, because it's just like this like common theme that everybody's just like understood that that's just a nerd. That's gonna be a weird thing to be like
Starting point is 00:27:51 in the spotlight just be known as a fucking nerd. You're like, yeah, I'm a nerd of Hollywood. I think I told you that one dude that fucking the D-D-L, it's not D-L, DJ. The guy that I was in my box, is just like so funny. You know this this yeah, I think I referenced that dude But it's like that you're going to these red carpet events with all these like fucking JT And beaver all these like dudes and you're just like I was I'm the nerd guy, but to their credit
Starting point is 00:28:18 I mean you know it's been like Hellel for ever says the most outrageous shit you ever heard. And he's a sweetheart from this podcast. He's just like a nice guy. Like obviously he's a sweetheart, but he's just funny. He seems like he's aged well, and I think that he's like, age well in a good way, just in the fact that his perspective is kind of no
Starting point is 00:28:46 I didn't see him like too caught up and all the way to the center That he probably can't be imagine like having a chat with him. Yeah, and like this. I you would just laugh before he even got to a joke He's just a funny human right He's good. I can't believe that him and Joe never met imagine that like what yeah no he said they didn't mean a lot of times I imagine yeah yeah that's right they said they said they just like comedy the comedy world is not that big when you've been in it like Joe's done it like 30 years he's done it like fucking 50 years.
Starting point is 00:29:25 It's like how has that not happened? That's kind of interesting, but it's cool that they got together because there must be so much similarities between things that they've done. And... He's like, I'm not signed, Phil. and and and and
Starting point is 00:29:48 and and and and and and and and and and and
Starting point is 00:30:04 and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and You know Did you ever met no, I mean I never got a good one I tried all different times that I'm trying to change I used to meet up with a buddy mine Cordor Rodrigo from my kids who school who was in School for like film so he had to like write a lot and We'd meet twice a week and just do You know, we just write but like he would write a lot more because he's like writing plays and things or like you know shorts
Starting point is 00:30:35 I'm trying to write jokes. So mostly I'm just staring at a computer barely ever getting any jokes So like if you get one good premise a week from two days, like that's actually a good week, but that's many hours of just staring at nothing. I kind of feel like the way Gilbert talked about it and other comedians do how like on stage they add lib and then come up with stuff. I just never had enough stage time to do that.
Starting point is 00:31:04 And like when you have more stage time, I think you can play around a bit more and and then use those ad-libbing moments to like create new sets. I mean, it's just, it's a complicated setup and everyone has their own way of doing it and figuring out your own way takes a long time too. Just does. Yeah, you got to come up with some new creative processes. It's funny to say that because it seems like even when we're hanging out or I'll have like just having a fun hang with a buddy or whatever.
Starting point is 00:31:41 And somebody will say something that's so funny or outrageous. I'm just like that could be the opening line to a comedy scene or the opening line to a comedy specialty. You know what I mean? I say that frequently, at least twice a week, I'd say that. Yeah, and you know, when I think to stand up, like people would know, and I did it and I would say some funny shit at a party and they're like, oh, that's a joke right there, but you know it's not.
Starting point is 00:32:03 You know, it's just like, it was just in the moment, it worked, like you can't, like this isn't, that doesn't play. And then, you know, at least they're not being so annoying is to be like, oh, you're a comedian, tell us a joke. People like that deserve to be shot in their face. And you're just like, how annoying are you? Like, what?
Starting point is 00:32:24 I'm like, what do you do? They're're like I'm a lawyer or a be a lawyer then Be a lawyer be a lawyer it wasn't interesting here and not to jump back to Canberra when he started talking about Jewel for that second and he was talking I told you didn't I after I listened to it I was like that is the best fucking rogue and I have ever heard hands down I was gonna say it was so eye-opening and the even even the fact that Camlin back and was like Inquiring about a lot of the topics and yeah situation Cam Haines gets inspired by a musician like what? You know there's something to it.
Starting point is 00:33:10 He's like I was in. Absolutely. For sure. Right. For sure. Remember when Gilbert and Joe were talking about MTV as like that was the launching pad for people's careers and like dude remember in the 90s like what MTV like 80s and 90s, but like Dude what it used to be it was like cool this channel that existed for sure Fuck yeah road road road music like there was nothing cool. There was nothing more
Starting point is 00:33:46 Joe Rogan style, you know, that was like against the grain and like badass Right is MTV like making that jump from that period of time. They off Some of those fucking summertime parties they'd have and all that like that was that was a great time and the cast for the real world I probably would have made it 100 minutes you are perfect for that show yeah rageshit you say full on douche like doing 50 push-ups every five minutes like this guy we you love to hate you oh yeah well facts well facts what we don't do the video version of this but I'm not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure if you're not sure want to shoot during these things. For the for the record, it's hot as a man is the hot over that noise and I shut the and I and I and I shut and I shut the I shut this. It is hot. I should shut this sliding glass door.
Starting point is 00:35:16 The sun's be even through. I knew you would notice like over there in freestown, but I know you for many years. It's more me just never. It's like raining out. You're like on to I was I was I was going They they ended the bit of the podcast with Fucking what's his name Jimmy Savile right and jody didn't really know how to do it say his last name but like give some context Jimmy Savile was
Starting point is 00:35:50 Like an English kids Like TV celebrity so he did like his own show called Jimmy will fix it and you could write in for him Dude he is such a good part of like my childhood. He was always on TV for like kid stuff. Every kid's a ward show, you know, just everything. And he always looked like a creep and a funer-looking crack set out.
Starting point is 00:36:15 But you know, he would do like these things and then you'd get like, I'm gonna find out. And you'd be like, oh, you know, there's like a shitty park near my house and I wish we had a good one and Jimmy would come in and like build the park and make it look good And then you know the kid would get a medal for it and like I'm pretty sure I wrote in a Jimmy fix it at one point Just to be like oh, yeah, there's some dumb shit in my town. I want better like and he just always did his shows and
Starting point is 00:36:44 then afterwards Learning that he was just these absolute monster The people covered up and hid like the BBC were a part of that. It's just Dude it makes me sick hundreds of children people if you cut if you cover that I'm not good right smoke to not good at all But you know what people don't get held responsible for that stuff. He said over 500 prosecute the people that do it and I don't How is that not the people? It's interesting. Ah, then you can, follow the things he's done.
Starting point is 00:37:26 Oh, well, yeah, but I feel like jail is the ultimate justice department in that area, though, because if they find out that you were fucking. Well, I think that's why in jail, they really hammer those fuckers, because they know they don't really get the time they deserve, you know? And there's people in there that like, you know, and there's people in there that are like, you know, they feel bad for what they've done and they're like, oh,
Starting point is 00:37:50 this is my one chance to like get some redemption for God. So they just come down on them hard. Right. God bless them. Good fucking. Anybody that does that stuff. That shit should be coming down so fucking god of hammer hammer god Yeah, really not good. It makes me sad anyway. I just wanted to cover that Interesting how they like get they gave them like a ball. So in the 90s they gave in yeah, they 90 90 kids work for children like fucking watch How wrong? Like his work for children like fucking watch how wrong Where we on this
Starting point is 00:38:29 Mass All right, let's jump over to Ari Shafia and Norman and those nerds Hey guys, we're gonna do something a little different for a second But I wanted to tell you about this new show, this new miniseries podcast I've been listening to from Wondery and Topic Studios called the Operator. This show is basically like the fucking War of War Street, but for phone sex operators, and it is really interesting. So basically like in the 90s, ads for phone sex lines, you could see them everywhere. They were like in magazines, cable channels would just be blasting them all night. Like it was just well known that, you know, they were just everywhere. So it
Starting point is 00:39:16 all started with an idea from this guy called Mike, uh, Pardees, I think his name was, he was like the CEO and founder of this company called Telnet, who proudly coined himself with the term telephone pimp. So he joined forces with this other tech giant called Michael Seth, self who was like the, like the phone sex bill gates of the times. But really it all came down to the women that were behind these phone lines that created this like close knit yet super dysfunctional family that turned American talent into a multi million dollar company. And it like revolutionized the sex industry. This is like before, pornub and all the, you know, the internet porn sites, the rule, everything. This is where people went to jerk off. So as the fortunes grow, the
Starting point is 00:40:12 founders were like, they had yachts, they were flying all over the place, like drug-induced parties. And this podcast talks about all of it. So Wondery and Topic Studios with this new podcast operator. They basically bring this untold story forwarded this company which dominated the phone sex industry until the money blinded them on and came crashing to the ground. So, I'm going to play you guys a little clip. It's a few minutes long and I I really think you're gonna like it. I got a call about two o'clock in the morning from one of the male supervisors, and he says there are a bunch of men with guns on the property, and we don't know what to do. Victoria had been working in American talent for several years.
Starting point is 00:41:06 She'd seen her share of emergencies, so she didn't freak out right away. And I said, okay, are they police? She says, I really don't know, they're playing clothes. I said, playing clothes suits, or he goes, no jeans. He goes, I said they were police, but they refused in the show of badge. Victoria's job was managing a big team of phone operators, all crammed into a nondescript warehouse in North Miami Beach.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Hundreds of men and women, mostly women, sat in cubicles, had sets on, fielding call after call, day and night. And now, men with guns claiming to be the police, were trying to get into the warehouse. We had electronic door access codes, every agent, every operator had their own code. The men didn't have access and they weren't showing a search warrant. Without a warrant, the operators weren't letting them in.
Starting point is 00:41:58 After a while, they stopped knocking. But when an operator opened the door to leave, the middle age agent was at the door. And once she got the door open, they pushed her on the ground. And the team ran over her back. The men had been waiting in the bushes. And they found out, and they were looking to look in the piles, they were looking for something. And as quick as they were in, they swooped through, they dug around, and they ran out. And as quick as they were in, they swooped through, they dug around, and they ran out. Victoria was furious.
Starting point is 00:42:28 As a supervisor at ATN, she had seen plenty of surprising things. And sure, the company may have skirted right up against a few federal regulations, but the service it provided wasn't against the law. Because the company where Victoria worked, American Tellmet, a company with the blandest of names, was actually the largest phone sex operation in the United States. Love to party, I'll take my phone now. My turns, women, on will turn you on. No rejections, no turn, men.
Starting point is 00:43:02 The morning after the raid, Victoria wanted answers. She went to ATN's head of technology, Michael Self, not much happened at ATN without Michael Self knowing about it. As it turned out, it was the local police and whatever they were looking for, they'd left empty handed. You know, the first story was, we called city hall, called the cop shop the next morning, they said it never happened. Armed men had invaded their offices, physically assaulting one of their employees, and the police were saying it never happened, and the ATN executives didn't seem to care because the police hadn't found anything. But Victoria cared, what about the operators? They are me by extension.
Starting point is 00:43:45 And I do feel that way. When something like the police raid happened and the owners did nothing, Victoria had to wonder how much did the company really care about her and the workers she looked out for. My understanding is when those folks flex, things get done. And yeah, they could have done that. When people like to mention how busy they were. Yeah, me too. I wish they would have taken it one step further and protected the golden goose instead of just the gold.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Because at the end of the day, ATN was a business, a really big business. It was a wild time and there is these girls on the stage doing a live sex show. It was like, you know, exessee cocaine, champagne, millionaires. At the pinnacle we were doing $1.1, $1.2 million on a Friday night or a Saturday night. This man, Mike Pottis, he controls all of the phone sex in the country.
Starting point is 00:44:38 Fancy cars, fancy clothes, celebrities, models, the porn industry. Until it all came crashing down. That wasn't a company, it wasn't a job. It was American tell man. The ending sucked. The beginnings were much more fun. Your call cannot be completed as well.
Starting point is 00:44:58 So there you go, that's a little taste of the podcast operator. Thanks for checking that out. I wanna bring you guys interesting podcasts that I like every now and again, so I might chuck these in maybe shorter selections, but yeah, you can find the operator on Apple Podcasts, Apple Music, or you can get it ad free by subscribing to Wondery Plus and Apple Podcasts and the Wondery app. There's like a link in the bio.
Starting point is 00:45:27 Check it out. Thanks guys. Yeah. Who's the other guy? I gotta remember his name. I love that dude too. He's so funny. I shouldn't know his name.
Starting point is 00:45:36 Yeah, she can give us. Great. She can give us. Check out his Trump speed dating. That guy, it's so good. Outs, outs, big time. Outs, outs, yes, out. Oh, I'm going to check that out. His is Trump.
Starting point is 00:45:50 It's good, right? It's really good. It was a world. It was a ball from when he talked about Amy. So good. And was like, I fat pig. You like, whoa, dude. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:00 He's like, no, no, no, that's what Trump would say. All right. He's like, I love you already got cancer from ask a man You got the cancel you got cancel like 45 seconds into the But that's probably why you so kid though. It's just an animal. I think he's got a Yeah, I think he's worn it. He's worn it well because if you give you get a taste of it early Then now I fucking face do you're worst? I got the right now I've got a taste now. I know to handle it
Starting point is 00:46:31 He was saying he was definitely saying some off the wall shit that you wouldn't Him in Martin Norman dude Are he was are he was like which is strange on the pod this time almost like really strange usually airy just like pissing in jaws and like saying the most that Regis ship, but yeah, he was kind of babysitting those guys in a way Keeping them together Yeah, so Aryan Joe about on the fights And by the way they they talked about the fights a few times the fights last week and we're If you guys didn't see him unbelievable outstanding By the way, they talked about the fights a few times. The fights last weekend were amazing.
Starting point is 00:47:05 If you guys didn't see him, unbelievable. Outstanding. That was my channel. Oh, dude, the other day, the other day, the fight was phenomenal. That was just like, how well did she do? And then, just brutal. Like, dude, there were just so many other fights.
Starting point is 00:47:24 She did it. It was absolutely brilliant It was a just everyone in the bar the where I was watching it was just so into it And you could tell they were like peep. Oh, we took a bunch of people that like don't usually watch him And they were like bro, I'm into this. I'm watching this every time. You know Yeah, little do they know they're not always that good, but it doesn't matter, right? It's whatever pulls you in. Right. Oh, so good.
Starting point is 00:47:50 That was entertaining. It's so good, man. So, oh, and Lewis Gomez from the Skankfest, he's one of the comedians, but he's fighting someone too and it sounds like he's gonna get his ass kicked. It's gonna be interesting to see it. That guy's a savage. He's always fighting people. I don't know what his deal is. That was funny when he goes. He asked Gilbert. He goes, so what are you doing? What's up next? He mentioned those cameos and then he's like pulling up his shit. Jamie pulls
Starting point is 00:48:22 it up and he's like, he didn't even know. He's like, doesn up his shit, and he pulls it up, and he's like, he's just doing this. And he's like, doesn't even know. That was probably such a good time. Well, Erie said today, I think on Instagram,
Starting point is 00:48:34 he was like, this is the most fun comedy event I ever went to ever. Yeah. Really? I think they just do like a festival, like a comedy festival, but like the skank fest has like their own format for like podcasting and shows where they just you know talk a lot of shit say I read your stuff I think
Starting point is 00:48:55 They may even like throw some boxing in they make it like a festival so yeah, it has its own So yeah, it has its own. That's fun. This is like a mix. It's a mix. They're just doing a lot of fun stuff and seeing if they can pull people in. So yeah, it's got to be a good time. What are your thoughts on these?
Starting point is 00:49:18 What are your thoughts on these celebrity boxings, celebrity, just because they were making mention of it. And some stuff like that's how people are making money now. Are you interested in that stuff or do you think it's watering down the sport or do you think it's you know I'm all for it because I look I'm not telling people what to do I'm all for it I think they're good for them and if you want to pull in some good fighters and like turn it into a real like, you know, WWE style. I mean, it's not fake, it's real boxing, but it's like carefully selected boxing.
Starting point is 00:49:54 Yeah, why not? Why not throw some celebrities against people that can actually fight and see what happens? Like, I think what the Paul guys Logan Paul and Jake Paul are doing is it it intrigues me You know at first I was annoyed. I was like all right. These guys are just being idiots, but to be fair they they They know how to whine people up and they know how to get people to watch and I'm down for that online. See fuck yeah I watch I watch Jake Oh days and yeah my you think my guys they would allow himself to lose I know he's 53 or 54 and he's got 30 years on Jake oh but oh day I would be for the first two
Starting point is 00:50:39 rounds he's fucking knocking out anyone do you knock off the Zoom call again We got a podcast you are technologically inclined I'm Tyson and Paul got me all worked up The yeah, I like it. I like what they do. I think it's It's just entertainment, you know, and if you don't like it, don't watch that shit. I mostly just watch it on YouTube illegally, like, until they take it down. I can't imagine, personally, I can't imagine paying, you know, whatever the Paper viewers for it, but who knows in time maybe like they get a good enough card going I mean you'd down to watch watch whatever fights. I mean I'd watch Conner box one of those nerds for sure Yeah, that would be an interesting fight too. I bet yeah, that would be great. I bet Conner probably loses that just based on weight
Starting point is 00:51:43 I don't know. The stand-up box matches a totally different scenario than MMA match. Obviously they got dominated in the MMA. I want to see a boxer come over to MMA. That should be the new thing. It's happened a couple of times. What's his name? Tony and he got he got ruined by Randy Colter just like ankle trip Tim and then smash them, but Yeah, I mean we're gonna make all these Come over to boxing why not make some boxing guys for the MMA Obviously it's probably because it's a lot harder to go that way like boxes are incredibly skilled, but you know
Starting point is 00:52:29 they they would have to learn so many different things right to come over to MMA that it's really not fair That's why MMA guys are not a shop of boxes because if all you do is focus on your boxing and boxing stance like you're leaving like you're gonna have it Yeah, you're gonna be exceptional even the best boxes in MMA Like mostly can't aren't gonna be at a touch professional boxes right no way Because they got so much other shit that they got a focus on I mean ground game and but I mean imagine just being able to tackle a boxer I mean, ground game. And but I mean, imagine just being able to tackle a boxer. Right. Like, you just tackling me, falls over.
Starting point is 00:53:07 He's not going to know what to do on the ground. He doesn't punch from the ground. Good for him. Yeah, it's not going to work well at all. Do you think that Rogan's podcast is missing anything from the super early days when they were saying how barbecued they used to get? Like, they would smoke out of the volcano and just get.
Starting point is 00:53:25 So, I mean, I remember Rogan's podcast. I think Rogan back in the day, like 2010, when he would get so barbeque, you knew that everybody on there barely knew what they were talking about. And he just made it hilarious, but he doesn't do that anymore. It's like maybe there's just the time in a place, but.
Starting point is 00:53:45 Yeah, he picks his spots. I think he does everything in moderation. When he has those scientists, he was making that funny joke. He's like, can I just have one scientist on rather than? Because there's been a long spur now where it's like, he's had a few lighten up guests recently, but there was a time there where I was like, Lex, just back to back to back to back of just like,
Starting point is 00:54:06 which it needed to happen, and we needed that we needed, we needed the input from a lot of, and we still do. But it's gotta be nice to have those pod gas, where you just get to hang out with his friends and shoot the shit, because you see how much he loves the laugh. I mean, that seems to be one. Oh yeah, no doubt. You know, so it's gotta be nice to just have that,
Starting point is 00:54:24 like, camaraderie and have that just people all around I think it would also be interesting if he had like a really like high-level scientist on and they decided to get absolutely barbecued I'm done be great it's a great idea you know I mean maybe it would be a shit show maybe the scientists wouldn't be able to hold it together and would like freak out what is it what is it thinking but what has been made so it's come on uh... i don't know if you think about it not many billionaires have
Starting point is 00:54:56 which is i think the only billion a ever had on was a long or maybe another guy yet that like guy that was in the uf.o.s on the was a billionaire i wonder how long until he has another Elon on again It won't be long that close friends. I was gonna say it seems like it's he's yeah, I think Jeff Bozo would be a good one to have on Jeff Bozo Do you see the thing that he posted about? Leonardo DiCaprio no, what is that? Did you see the thing that he posted about Lee and other decaprio? No, what is that?
Starting point is 00:55:28 Yeah, so Leo, like met his wife recently. It's like him, Jeff Bezos and Jeff's wife. And she just looked so enamored with Leo. Leo, that Jeff posted this thing, like a sign, he's like leaning against the sign that says like there's this deadly cliff. And he's like, hey, come for a walk with me, Leo or some shit like that. He's like, I like that. You should be funny. Be funny, Jeff. You're not funny enough.
Starting point is 00:56:02 Elon is way funny than you are. So get funny. Be funny Jeff you're not funny enough Elon is way funny than you are so get funnier Is he already one of the richest men in the world like chill out well to be fair He was until Elon just crushed him right. I wonder if he gets married. I wonder if you get married again Probably I'm sure there's a lot of pressure from your girlfriend when you're one of the richest men in the world I'm sure there's a lot of pressure from you girlfriend when you're one of the richest men in the world He's like listen, they know they got a big payday. I've already gone down this road once we don't Elan's got like three different for me once He once got three different baby moments, I think with like five kids or something Yeah, Elon just ended his relationship right with that singer. Did he that makes sense?
Starting point is 00:56:46 Yeah, I think so I was like, all right, you gotta go. It's gonna be a rough guy to try and have a relationship with Yeah, who knows why he's an intense dude, right? Let's be honest What did you think about Alec Baldwin killing that lady off? What's a tough fucking story, man. Yeah, well, I feel bad for everybody involved. When Joe said he's like the first. Also, learn some gun control.
Starting point is 00:57:10 I was going to say, right, for that anyway. I was going to say the first thing that I ever think about when I think about ever having a gun. And I'm not even a novice. I'm picked up a gun 10, 15 times guy. I've always known, don't point it in the direction of somebody else, whether or not it's loaded or not loaded. That was like a simple rule of thumb.
Starting point is 00:57:31 So I don't know, man. I don't have one way or the other on that one. That's a tough pill. I mean, I don't know. I'm sure there's contracts and whatnot or that's written in that if that stuff happens, that that's just part of the game. But Jesus Christ, I don't know. Yeah, you know, I feel bad. I mean, you know, Alec Bolwin is a legend, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:57:50 And he's a hilarious guy. And good actor, and no one should go through that. That's fucking awful. But yeah, what a wild one. I don't know, what a wild one. And then there's Joe finishing up the pod by saying he just got two famous that he needs the hire, like murderers to be around.
Starting point is 00:58:09 Like special forces murderers. Do you think they're at his house too? Or just at his studio? Or is he like got these guys watching him 24-7? Is that that wealthy? I bet he's got it pretty well locked down at his compound with security and whatnot. I don't think he's got it pretty well locked down at his compound With security and whatnot. I don't think he's yeah, no doubt for his family. Yeah, for his family
