Hey everyone and welcome to Wednesday One Shots, that bonus episode where we help you
Starting point is 00:00:48 get through that midweek slump. This week we have a story by listener, SoulTreeMind99 called Creeper Boss. I like many other people that have contributed their stories to this show have a lot more stories, other than this one that I could share with you, especially since I worked alone in retail shopping malls and mall kiosks for about six years in the greater Detroit area. I'll share those stories on another day, but this story started in June of 2018. For reference, I'm a very fit 51 year old female, I'm 5'7", 126 pounds, and an avid cyclist. I had been running my own business online for about 15 years until I decided that I wanted
Starting point is 00:01:29 to have another part-time job that got me out of the house. So I started weight-tracing at a local sushi restaurant where I met my coworker who will call Sandy. Sandy was about 20 years younger than me. The restaurant was very hectic and poorly managed with a boss from hell, so I decided to jump ship and work at an Italian restaurant that was much closer to my house. Sandy and I hid it off pretty well, so I talked her into working at the Italian restaurant with me. It was a much more comfortable work environment to work in, or so we thought. The restaurant was run by a family that has owned it since
Starting point is 00:02:05 the 1950s. The father of this family, who was from Italy, had retired, so his two sons and daughter were the managers. The daughter was in her early 60s, and was nice enough to work along with, and the oldest son was in his late 60s, however, the youngest son who was in his 50s was always a bit off. I always referred to him in my head as Creeper Boss. Now if you've ever worked in kitchens, you're pretty used to being yelled at from time to time, but Creeper Boss would lose it and start cursing at the tiniest of things, especially during high volume times.
Starting point is 00:02:41 When Creeper Boss was managing the floor, he would always come up behind me and ask me over and over. Hey, how are you doing? While standing way too close to me, he was very repetitive and kept doing this every five minutes, always standing way too close. Sometimes he would say, there's a snake in my boots. And then he would walk off again. So imagine these scenarios happening every shift, anywhere from 10 to 30 times per shift, each shift being about 6 hours long. I absolutely dreaded being scheduled with creeper boss. As time went on, more and more disturbing habits were noticed by myself and the other staff
Starting point is 00:03:21 members. If you went into the office to ask a question during his shift, there would be anywhere from four to eight empty alcoholic drinks sitting on his desk. He was clearly loaded for most of his shifts, and so was the 38 caliber hand gun that he always had, sitting right next to his drinks on the desk. I tried to brush it off since the restaurant was in a pretty dangerous neighborhood and robberies were pretty common in the area. I talked to my coworker Sandy about it and she didn't seem to be bothered at all.
Starting point is 00:03:56 He would also get far too close to my hips and butt when he would pass me in the hallway of the service station. Many times his hands would happen to grays or bump against my butt. It was always passed off as accidental. He was always repeating his, there's a snake in my boot line. One time I yelled at him and said if his hands got any closer to my butt I would break his arms. This seemed to work for a while because he stayed away from me, but this didn't stop him from always giving out unwanted compliments on my
Starting point is 00:04:31 appearance. I don't think I've ever worked in a kitchen that would be considered appropriate. You just get used to the crass nature of kitchen life, but even through all of that, this guy stood out with the creep factor. Some of the waitresses were in their late 50s and 60s, and were always telling dirty jokes with creeper boss. One day, as he hauled off, he slapped one on the butt. I was mortified. I asked the waitress who was slapped about the incident, but she said she didn't care. So I just minded my own business, I did my best to stay away from him.
Starting point is 00:05:10 There was another guy who had worked in the kitchen for decades. He made the pizzas and had a concealed carry on him at all times. He was always threatening to shoot us all, pretty much every shift, so that always kept me on edge as well. I finally went to creeper boss and told him that the pizza guy, with the concealed gun, kept threatening to shoot us every shift, and it was making me uncomfortable. He said the pizza guy was a moron, he would never actually do it. Wow, problem solved, right?
Starting point is 00:05:45 Why didn't I just walk out of this place? Well, I really liked a few of my co-workers and I didn't want to abandon them. Plus, it was so close to my house, and not a lot of other places could accommodate my schedule, so I just powered through it. Until one day. We were all standing around the entrance of the restaurant by the podium where we greeted all of the incoming customers. There were three or four other servers, myself and my co-worker Sandy. Everyone was joking and laughing, then Creeper Boss came up and started joking
Starting point is 00:06:18 and laughing too. Then he took his hand and he slapped it right across Sandy's butt in front of everyone. She was mortified and now in tears. How an employer could get away with this is beyond ridiculous. I tried to talk Sandy into making a report for both of us, but she was too humiliated and intimidated to say anything about it. I mean, there was a loaded gun on this guy's desk for fuck's sake. I decided to go to creepy bosses older brother, one of the other managers. He was usually much more sensible with all of the issues, the handsy stuff, the inappropriate comments, the slapping, the standing too close, the drinking on the job, and also the threats of being shot by the pizza guy.
Starting point is 00:07:06 But he still did nothing, he just brushed it off. Out of frustration, I spoke with some of the other kitchen guys. The dishwasher said that creepy boss came into the kitchen every day and would ask him, hey, have you seen her ask today? They were talking about me. There were other inappropriate comments as well. Keep in mind that I knew the creepy bosses family. I knew his wife, sons, and daughter.
Starting point is 00:07:35 I waited on them all the time. His wife would call the restaurant many times during the day to talk with Creeper Boss. To call it an awkward situation would be an understatement. One of the cooks that had been there a long time said that the Creeper Boss had numerous sexual harassment suits that he bought his way out of, and that the other managers tried not to hire fit or attractive waitresses due to his behavior. So, his brother and sister knew what a problematic creep their brother was all along and did nothing.
Starting point is 00:08:09 That was it. I was done. I was ready to find a different job. One that was corporate owned and had an actual HR department. I begged Sandy to find something else with me, but she wouldn't. Just six weeks later, all the restaurants in the country were shut down because of the pandemic. On my unemployment request, I stated that I left my last job because of sexual harassment and unsafe work environments. My coworker, the dishwasher, also quit because of
Starting point is 00:08:38 the same reasons and wrote a note stating the fact that there was sexual harassment on the job regularly. All that wound up doing was holding up my employment claim for four extra months, and my unemployment was eventually denied because of it. The unemployment office said that there was no proof. So much for taking the high road and telling the truth. I ended up going back to the sushi restaurant once the restaurant industry reopened, and I worked there doing carry out. About six months after quitting the Italian place, a regular customer from there came in to the sushi restaurant and asked me if I had heard what had happened to Creeper Boss. Well, he got into an argument with
Starting point is 00:09:21 his wife late one night, and he shot her to death two times in the back. It was horrible. His family protected and enabled his dangerous behavior. No one wanted to listen to me. Everyone was too scared to speak up, and he only got nine years for what he did. I mourn for his kids. My friend Sandy, if you can believe it, still works at that Italian restaurant. But to the creeper boss who's in prison right now and gets out in another 8 years, let's never meet again. Thank you so much for listening, and thank you to Sultry Mime 99 for submitting that story creeper boss.
