Welcome to Wednesday One Chots, the series where we share a bonus story with you to help
you get through the week.
And let's just pretend that I didn't forget to release this on Wednesday, and it's definitely
not Friday.
In any case, this week we have a story from a listener named Danny called, He Followed Me.
I've listened to this podcast a lot, and it made me think of my own story.
This was almost seven years ago.
I live somewhere where I never thought something like this could happen.
I live in a small town called Paradise in California. We have our
occasional attics and drunks, but for the most part I would say that our town is pretty calm
and quiet. I'm 16 now, but this happened when I was about 9 years old. For context, I'm a female,
and I was very small at the time, so I couldn't really fend for myself if something were to go down.
small at the time, so I couldn't really fend for myself if something were to go down. School was almost out for the summer, so it was pretty hot outside.
It was the end of the school day, and I was getting on the bus.
On the bus, I walked to the second-to-last row of seats and sat down with my friend who
will call Megan.
Megan and I were goofing around, just being kids who were bored on a school bus.
Her bus stopped before a mine, so eventually she got off the bus. My stop was about 10 minutes
after hers. Sometimes on the bus rides, we would notice this creepy white van with rusted
wheel rims that would drive alongside our bus. No one seemed to think anything of it. We
couldn't really see who was driving it,
so we were pretty sure that it was harmless. When we reached the bus stop that day, the van stopped
and parked, and there was this sketchy guy standing next to it. The walk from my bus stop to my house
was about a 14-minute walk. The bus driver noticed the man, and she
didn't feel comfortable with me walking home by myself, so she followed me as far as she
could before she had to continue on to the next stop.
I got home safe that day, so I'd like to say that it was a happy ending.
Unfortunately, the next day was a different story. After school led out the following day, the same thing happened.
I walked to the second to last row of seats to sit with Megan until we reached her stop.
When we got to my stop, something was strange.
Normally there were parents and guardians standing around waiting for their kids, but this time
they were waiting further up than usual, almost as if they were distancing
themselves from something, or someone.
Then I saw the van, and the sketchy guy standing outside of it.
I passed by the van and the man dressed in all black, standing in front of it.
For some reason, my nine-year-old brain just didn't register this as the same guy as the
day before, so I brushed it off.
As I turned onto my street, I looked behind me, and I noticed my bus driver was gone.
That's also when I saw him, the man in black.
He had the hood on his hoodie pulled up, and he was wearing gloves, walking in my direction.
Now, remember, as I said before, school was
almost out for the summer. It was easily about 97 degrees outside, so no hoodie or gloves
necessary. He was wearing a backpack, and he had his hand in his pocket as if he were
holding something. I thought that it was very weird. He looked like he was stressed out since he was constantly looking over his shoulder behind
him.
It seemed like he was making sure that nobody was going to catch him in the act.
I noticed that he was picking up his pace, getting closer and closer.
So that's when I began to run.
I looked behind me and he was running as fast as he could to catch up.
When I managed to make it to my house, I swung the door open and quickly shut it behind
me.
I locked the front door and then ran to the back of the house to make sure that the back
door was locked.
My mom had a room made at the time, so I burst into her room and told her what happened.
My mom's roommate got into her car and drove all around the neighborhood,
but we didn't find him. I don't know what his intentions were, but to the man in black who
followed a child home from their bus stop, let's not meet. Thank you to Danny for submitting
that story, and thank you for listening. If you have a story to share, make sure you send it
to Let's Not Meet Stories at gmail.com. We'll see you all next week for a full episode of Let's Not Meet.
Everyone stay safe. you you
