Welcome to Wednesday One Chots, the series where we share a bonus story with you to help
you get through your week.
This time around we have a story from a listener named Chandana.
I'm from India and I'm 5 foot tall.
I'm a woman.
I'm 22 years old now and this happened 2 years ago.
My family and I lived in an apartment where we all felt safe until this happened.
My family and I went on a trip for a week.
We went someplace far away and we closed all of the windows and locked all of our doors
securely, even though there was nothing really to fear, it was a safe neighborhood.
When we returned from our trip, I was joking about how hot our apartment would be since we
closed all of the windows, inhibiting any air flow into the apartment.
This was in India, during the summer, and our apartment got very hot when we had everything
closed up.
When we reached the apartment at 2 in the morning, I went to open the door while my parents were
unloading our stuff from the car.
As I opened the door, I noticed that the apartment was very much at a normal temperature.
I felt weird for a second, but then I shrugged it off and thought we
must have left a window open. But I was sure that we closed them all, and I was relieved
that I would be able to sleep without having to deal with any intense heat.
I entered the house and tried to turn on all the lights. That's when I noticed a shadow
moving in another room, the room with the movement
was visible from the living room where I was. My adrenaline rushed, but I was still in
doubt. I assumed I had just imagined what I had seen, so I stepped a little further
into the living room, and pretended that I hadn't seen a shadow moving. That's when I noticed that the window to our living room was shattered.
Everything fell into place.
My mom and dad were still unloading the car outside.
I knew that I shouldn't scream so instead I slowly stepped back outside of the house.
As I was stepping back outside, I called out.
Wait a minute, dad.
I'll be right back.
I'm going to go get some food.
In an attempt to fool whoever was inside the house.
I shut the door and locked it behind me, then rushed to my dad to tell him what was going
on.
He was obviously shocked.
My dad told me that we needed to cover the shattered window so that the guy inside
couldn't escape until the police arrived.
So my dad took the car and parked it in front of the window, leaving no real room for an
exit.
From the size of the shadow that I saw, I could tell that this guy was big.
The police arrived and they caught him.
I was right, the guy was big, six feet tall. While they
pulled him out of our house, the man grinned at us, which scared us to death. Later we found
out from the police that the man was a criminal who had been burgling houses in our area.
He was accused of attempted murder. Somehow he knew that my family and I weren't going
to be home for a week. I don't know what he had planned for that night, and I don't know what prompted me to
joke about the house being hot after being closed up for a week, but thank God I had
the temperature on my mind.
If I didn't, I wouldn't have realized that there was something wrong going on.
To the guy in our house, let's not ever meet again.
Thank you to Chantana for sharing that story, and if you have a story to share, send it
over to Let's Not Meet Stories at Gmail.com.
We'll see you all next week for a full episode of Let's Not Meet.
Everyone, stay safe. I'm sorry. you
