Starting point is 00:00:00 Metrolinx and cross links are reminding everyone to be careful as Eglinton Cross-town LRT train testing is in progress. Please be alert, as trains can pass at any time on the tracks. Remember to follow all traffic signals, be careful along our tracks and only make left turns where it's safe to do so. Be alert, be aware, and stay safe. Welcome to Wednesday One Chots, the series where we share an extra story with you to help you get through your week. This time around, we have a story from a listener named Nebes. This was over a decade ago, but my family and I used to live in a country somewhere in West Asia. I'd rather not disclose exactly where for privacy.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Growing up my parents and I often visited this small, local mall during the weekends. This particular night, my mom and I were browsing in a shop that sold watches. Being a nine-year-old kid, I was minding my own business, looking around the store, while my mom was chatting with the clerk. There were two store clerks at this time. Not long after, the first clerk passed my mom over to another clerk so that she could look at other selections. As my mom in the second clerk walked to the other side of the store, the original clerk approached me and tried to make conversation
Starting point is 00:01:37 with me. I can't really remember what this guy was saying, but I sure remember him getting far too close for comfort. In my little kid mind, I knew that this was a red flag, but I simply did not know what to do since I was backed up into a corner. He began to touch my shoulder at first, then my hair. I tried evading him by running to my mother's side. She was completely unaware of what was going on since she was busy talking to the other clerk. The weird clerk then approached me and my mom, striking up a conversation. I recall him telling her how cute I was in a distinct customer-friendly type of voice. While talking, he wrapped his arm around me and gave me this weird
Starting point is 00:02:26 side hug, still laughing and attempting to entertain my mother. At this point, I'm pretty sure that my mom caught onto the vibe that this guy was very creepy, because she grabbed my hand and started to walk me out of the store. I was so relieved that we were going to get out of there. But then the man held on to me as my mother was pulling me away. While grabbing on to me very inappropriately, we were able to break free as we crossed the threshold of the store to exit. When we got home, I told my mom everything that happened and needless to say, she was livid. I told my mom everything that happened and needless to say, she was livid. As it turns out, the watch that she bought was broken, so the very next day we went back to return it.
Starting point is 00:03:11 There was a massive sale, so there were plenty of customers in the store. My mom marched through the crowd and made a scene about how the store was selling defective products to their customers. I remember she was holding the watch in her hand and waving it angrily at the creep. I warned the customers, who were mostly women, that the watches were shotty knock-offs. I also told them not to trust that guy that my mom was talking to. My mom was refunded and most of the customers left out of confusion and repulsion. The last thing I remember was that same clerk looking at me with absolute hatred in his eyes before we left. My family and I moved to the United States a few years after this event.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I still have my fair share of stories of running into nasty creeps here in this country alone, but this one forever has scarred my nine year old mind. As an adult, I remain vigilant to watch over my younger family members, and am very vocal about denouncing predatory behavior when it's being normalized in everyday spaces. I know that I'll likely never see this guy again, being on the other side of the world now, but to the creepy store clerk from that watch store, let's never meet. Thank you to our author, Mebes, for sharing that story. And if you have a story to share, make sure you send it to Let's Not Meet Stories at gmail.com. We'll see you all next week for
