What up party people? Happy holidays. Welcome to another edition of Mark Bell's Saturday School.
We're doing a little remote action. I'm going to go ahead and lay the gauntlet down, lay this question down for Mark,
so that way we can get to the man, the myth, the legend that is Mark Bell, so that way you guys can stop hearing my voice.
But anyways, what I wanted to ask you, Mr. Mark Bell, when did you get your crystal ball?
When did you get your crystal ball? What I'm getting at is there has been so many different times where you call something and it comes to fruition. roll out everything, bring, you know, 20 employees and send thousands and thousands of dollars,
uh, over there to have our booth and kind of do what we've been doing for years.
And then I don't remember exactly how close it was, but it was really close to like the deadline.
You were like, nah, you know what? Uh, we're not going to do that. We'll have, we'll be there
to a certain percent percentage or whatever you want to call it,, we're not going to do that. We'll have, we'll be there to a certain
percentage or whatever you want to call it, but we're not going to, we're just not going to do
that. And then shortly after that, I believe is when COVID hit and all our friends, everybody
that we know in the industry was like, holy shit. I just, I lost so much money on this,
on this thing. And it wasn't like putting anybody
under anything like that. But what I'm getting at is there's been tons of times like that,
you know, where you'll call something and it just seems like you are super in tuned with
what I think what people would call like your gut instinct. Um, there's been times where like,
I'll, I'll feel something like I should go in that
direction, but I'll, I'll listen to people that influence me or I just won't believe in myself.
And then I'll ultimately get it wrong. So I, I, I just, what I really want to lay down here is like,
how do you know, like, cause like I said, you've called it so many different times.
like, cause like I said, you've called it so many different times. So what I want to know is like,
how, how do you really believe in yourself and believe in that gut instinct to follow through? Because there's been times where like, I'll, I'll want to change up my, my, uh, like my exercises
and my, my training and stuff, but I'll listen to this guy and I'll listen to that guy. And it's
like, it sometimes doesn't work out. And then there's other times where I'm like, you know what? I know what's right for me.
I know what's best for my back and my body. And then poof, I make amazing progress. So for yourself,
when did that start? That's what I really want to know actually is like, when did, like, how young
were you when you, like I said, got that crystal ball and you can look into the future essentially and really understand that like you can kind of will things to happen and sort of manifest things to come to fruition.
The microphone is hot.
What a great question, Andrew.
Thank you so much.
Welcome to another Saturday School, everybody.
Open up your books, jacked and tanned, to page 43.
That's the page we're always on, and we all have to be on the same page in order to move forward.
Andrew's question about how can you anticipate the future?
How can you have a crystal ball?
How do you know when to trust your gut? For me, there's a simple thing of intuition
and I like to float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Use my previous experiences and
use my life experiences, draw upon those when necessary to make the right changes. And I know it's the right change when
something tries to alter or I feel the outside world is asking me to alter
what I do or who I am. And it no longer fits. It no longer fits me like a jacket. It no longer fits me like your favorite
hoodie. It no longer fits you like your most comfortable hoodie. You don't want to, it feels
uncomfortable to wear it. I'm 45 years old and I've been uncomfortable before. I've been in those situations where I made a decision to stick something out.
I didn't stick and move. I didn't float like a butterfly. I didn't sting like a bee.
I floated like a cow and stung like a fucking zebra or something. I don't know.
But whatever the case is, I wasn't swift and nifty and nimble.
I didn't move quick enough. And so in this case of, you know,
being a matador and eluding the Arnold, um, the Arnold was just no longer working out for us any
longer. In the last year that we went there, I could sense it and I could tell and I can feel it.
And I felt like people needed more from these quote unquote influencers.
And, uh, I don't like to be tied into, you know, being an influencer with every other fitness person because I
don't really feel like I am because I've been doing this stuff before the word was even
around. I've been, you know, showing people how to bench, how to squat, how to deadlift,
how to power lift, how to eat, how to become jacked
and tan. I've been doing this for such a long time. Teaching people about walking. Ten minutes
walk. The ten minute walk. I'm on a walk right now. That's why I sound so fat. Walking up
a hill in Bodega Bay right now. The day after Thanksgiving, walking in the pitch black
with my phone flashlight,
working my way through,
working my way back through the fog here.
But anyway, that's how I've done it.
The intuition and the belief in myself has been pivotal.
How do you believe in yourself?
Well, we can start out by saying what I always say, what I always share.
I had two outstanding parents.
I always think that's important to share that.
Because without that, you're going to go around searching for stuff, seeking for stuff, not knowing why you're searching and seeking for stuff.
And it's probably just love, affection from mom and dad.
And I got a lot of that.
I got a lot of hugs, especially from Mama Belle, RIP. She was so good to me and she had a hard time instilling confidence
in herself or gaining confidence for herself, but she instilled a lot in me and it wasn't
false confidence. She did teach me and my dad too and my grandpa the value of putting in work and how oriented your work is to your success and how oriented
your work is to how you feel. It's huge. Your psychological state is often pulled around and towed around and thrown around by your emotions. So when you are
spun up, wound up, offended, triggered, any of those types of things, you cannot make the right
decision because you no longer, and this is literal. I mean, you can listen to Andrew Huberman.
He'll bring up studies on this kind of thing. You will find that people, this retards people's
ability to think properly. It denies access to the knowledge that they already have.
denies access to the knowledge that they already have.
So that is part of the point in me starting my supplement brand within you.
Obviously, I want to sell these supplements and I believe in them.
The Steak Shake, the Keto Pro, the Fasting Gum,
all these different things that you guys see me pumping out the part a big reason obviously like
i said to sell supplements and to make it easier for you guys to eat properly because my products
taste really good but the other thing was to bring awareness to the fact that everything you need
is already within you it's already sitting in there and I don't want to get all woo woo and yoga II and
Man bunny and all that kind of stuff
But maybe some of you out there need to explore this side of yourself a little bit more
Maybe it would be good to investigate. What do you have inside?
can you go outside right now and
Run the biggest hill in your neighborhood and stick it out for
four minutes, six minutes, eight minutes, 10 minutes? Can you go do it? And if you can't,
why not? Well, it could be because you don't have a skill set for it.
And a skill set is critical. When we're talking about this psychological state there's also a
physiological state and when your skill set for your physiological state when
your physical prowess when your physical when your skill set and your tools physically aren't improving, the body keeps score.
The body keeps score.
The body keeps track.
And your mom could have told you you're pretty or your mom could have told you that you're smart.
And she could have told you this and told you that or your aunt, your grandma or whatever.
But if it ain't true, it ain't true.
And your body knows all about it.
Your body, your mind, and your spirit know if you're broken or not.
It knows whether or not the things that you're telling it are bullshit or not.
So you can have positive affirmations, and you can try to to be a positive person which you hear so many people talk about. This is where I
differ from a lot of people. I'm not in disagreement that being positive isn't
helpful and I'm not disagreeing with the fact that trying to figure out ways to limit or eliminate negativity isn't vastly important.
But here's what I think is more important.
Never mind the positive and negative.
How about you just go out and do something?
Go out and do what's in your best interest.
What are you interested in?
What do you like to do?
Would you like to do?
Would you like to be able to run a 10-minute mile?
Would you like to be able, right now,
I got a goal of running a 10-minute mile through all nasal breathing.
At the moment, I don't have quite the skill set
to go and do that.
So, normally when I'm running my miles,
and I do four miles, those would be 12 minutes, 12.30, something do that. So normally when I'm running my miles and I do four miles, those would be 12 minutes, 1230, something like that through nasal breathing.
So what am I going to do about it?
I'm going to continue to work on it.
It's something that I would like to get to.
But I don't even particularly like to set goals either.
This is not about setting goals.
And I'm not even, I'm not necessarily a huge fan.
When I squatted 900, of course it was a natural progression
to start to think about 1,000 pounds.
But it wasn't in my workouts.
The thought of squatting 1,000 was very, very rare.
It was how do I get better today?
What can I do today?
And that's what we need to figure out and that is how I've had a crystal ball
How do I get better today?
and I start to think about and I start to ask questions and
From a business perspective. It's important to ask a lot of questions
Well, what would happen if the building went on fire? questions. And from a business perspective, it's important to ask a lot of questions.
Well, what would happen if the building went on fire? What would happen if all my products went up in smoke? What would I do? What would happen if I died? What would happen if my
wife died? Because my wife is basically the CEO of Slingshot.
What would happen to the podcast?
What would happen to the podcast tomorrow if, God forbid, I got a call that something happened to Andrew?
He's our engineer.
He's our podcast engineer.
He's the guy asking the questions on Saturday school.
Fuck, man.
That'd be devastating.
But these are things that are actually a really good idea to play out in your head.
You know?
Not to make this too morbid, but I know exactly what I would do. I would still entitle Andrew's family to the profits of the podcast. And I would start
to figure out like, how are we going to continue to run this? What's the best way to keep this
motherfucker in check? Maybe Andrew and I will fucking plan this shit out. And I can say, Hey,
if I die, why don't you do this? You can say, Hey, if I die, why don't you do that?
But yeah, that would be my concerns. You know, how do we if I die, why don't you do that? But yeah, that would be my concern is,
you know, how do we, I'm a problem solving person, troubleshooting person,
worst case scenario. And it's not worry. And it's not massive concern over nothing.
It's more like realistic. It happens. Fires happen.
You know, bad weather.
You end up with supply chain issues.
Like all kinds of things happen.
They happen all the time and they happen to everybody.
And so how do you stick and move?
We have to be confident in yourself.
You have to feel good about yourself.
And you got to be strong from within, from the inside out.
So if right now you don't possess the ability to jog or deadlift your body weight for a couple reps,
this is something that you want to look into. This is something that there is no question this should be a consideration for you to work on. And it doesn't
necessarily mean anything negative if you currently struggle with it. It just means that's where you're at.
And so you can't do a pull-up. You can't do 10 push-ups. I mean, you know, come on, like, just go
figure out a way to go address that. Your arms are smaller than your leg. Your shoulders are
skinnier than your body, skinnier than than your body. Go train. Go do a
six-week program. Tell me you don't feel better about yourself when you get yourself a little
bigger. Eat a little bit more protein. Listen to The Power Project. Listen to Joe Rogan. Listen to
some of these podcasts. Follow fucking Joe Sullivan on Instagram.
Powerlifter.
Learn how to get big.
Listen to Matt Wenning.
There's a lot of great people out there with a lot of
great information.
Maybe those people
don't always even agree with each other, but who cares?
Who cares whether they
like each other or not? You get to utilize their
information, not worry about
it so sticking and moving and you know I'm a guy that years ago did the keto diet
I did a bodybuilding style diet for a bodybuilding show where it was lower fat, higher carb, and I performed really well.
Nowadays, I sit at a slightly lighter body weight,
or around the same body weight I competed at on stage.
My body fat percentage has probably altered a bit.
It's probably a little higher right now than it was when I competed but I can turn the corner on my
physique and lower the body fat percentage get some slops with more
muscle on even with what I currently do and what I currently do is kind of like
a carnivoresque diet everything's all based around meat I eat meat and I work on the rest through
sometimes fruit potatoes cottage cheese yogurt and yeah occasionally have
potatoes and rice depending on the workload running and stuff like that but this isn't all in an
effort to keep a lot of plates spinning at one time but I know that it registers
within me that I'm better than I was yesterday that's what it's about to me
getting better every day I got plans down the road to work on jujitsu.
But I don't know if it's two years from now
or three years from now, like, I just started running.
And I'm building a base out for that.
And running is something that I hope
that I keep around forever.
I built out a nice base and I hope that
for the rest of my life, that just whenever I want,
I can go run 10 miles without any problem.
Now, maybe to a runner, they're like,
yeah, that's not a big deal.
But for me, it registered in my system system in my body as a big deal because
I can't lie to myself even though now I can call myself a runner because I am running my body
knows my body knows what it was what what it's done. And even though everything is an interpretation,
and I can try to be as positive as I want about running,
I'm known as Mark Bell, a power lifter.
I'm known as Mark Bell, the guy that talked about steroids in the film,
bigger, stronger, faster.
I'm known for bench pressing, creating a bench press device,
I'm known for bench pressing, creating a bench press device, the slingshot, 854 pound bench, 1080 squat, 766 deadlift.
I'm known for that.
That's the way people recognize me.
That's the way people interpret me.
And so I can sit here and say, yeah, man, well, you've been running a lot. And even two years from now, I can say, okay, well, that's a good amount of running, but it doesn't,
it's not equating. It's not nearly the amount or the magnitude of power lifting that I did.
of power lifting that I did. So my body still knows you a power lifter, bro.
Right? My body still is aware of all that. It still knows all that.
So in order for you to build out a crystal ball, you're going to have to have a really strong belief in yourself. In my opinion, it's one of the greatest things that you can build out is a belief in yourself, not in who you are, but in what you are.
You are a human being. We are the apex predator. You're a human being we are the apex predator
you're a human being
with an ability
with no ceiling
on what you can learn
know
and do
the ceiling
is set by yourself
and so you can turn yourself
into a monster
you can turn yourself into a monster. You can turn yourself into somebody
that it seems like you can see the future from time to time, even though you probably can't.
You can turn yourself into somebody that has strong belief and convictions in themselves to make the big decisions, to make
the big calls, as Andrew's pointing out about the Arnold. I just knew that wasn't us anymore.
I knew we weren't that little company anymore. And is it possible that I'll be back at those
trade shows, showing people how to bench?
Having people try on slingshot sure
Absolutely, it's possible
It's a great product and one of the only ways to know the slingshot is to use it is to do it
And that is pretty much the way that I am as a person
I'm not gonna take too much information from you unless you've been out there doing it
I'm not gonna take too much information from you unless you've been out there doing it that's where I like guys like Andrew Huberman and Peter ITA Sean Baker Paul Saladino these are all guys that
Ben Greenfield these are all guys that are studying examining it and they're also out there doing it and that makes a big difference for me and I know
that these guys are very confident men Stan Efferding obviously comes to mind right
these are very confident men and they're not confident because they have an ego
they're confident because they have worked for something, towards something.
They've done some stuff and they're aware of it.
Your body knows.
Your body keeps score.
Your body keeps track.
Okay.
And then as a follow-up question, people are hearing this and they're like, holy shit, Mark Bell's on point.
You know what?
I'm going to start listening to my gut.
going to start listening to my gut. I'm going to, you know, start trying to like, uh, you know, subtract all the noise and just really hone in on my thoughts and what I think is best for myself.
And what happens? They fall flat on their face. We're totally wrong and took 10 steps back when
they were trying to just take a half step forward. So in that situation, if you've ever been wrong,
or you've
seen people where they make a misstep, how do we navigate that? You know, it's like, well, shit,
like if, if I can't trust in myself, like what a weird feeling that is to be like, dude, I always
screw things up. Or, you know, that, that guy that's like, oh, I'm going to make a mistake
eventually. And what happens? He makes a mistake or Or I'm going to get hurt in the gym.
And what happens?
That person gets hurt.
Jiu-jitsu, same thing.
It's just a part of the game.
You roll with the punches or roll with the arm bars.
And that person ends up getting hurt.
So again, how do you navigate that?
How do you kind of build the trust back up for yourself?
How you build that trust back up within yourself is going to be
the same recipe that I just gave. And it's the same recipe that I give time and time again,
same RX for so many people. You want to gain confidence, drop 20 pounds, get a little stronger,
to the gym, punch a heavy bag, learn how to fight, you know, learn some MMA, learn how to throw some kicks, learn how to throw some punches, or just start practicing yourself. But you have to be
truthful to yourself. You can't lie to yourself. That's what this is all about this is all about being reasonable with yourself okay so you're not um george saint pierre fine okay not a big deal but can you just go be you
and can you work on your kicks and can you work on your punches and get better at them
yeah of course you can so in order for you to gain your confidence back, you can't say, I'm the guy
that always gets hurt. I'm the guy, I'm always going to be broke. Fuck man, my dad was right.
I'm not going to ever be anything. That is where the positive negative stuff comes in.
But this is not about talking about positive and negative because that's what pussies fucking do
you know there's a lot of people on the internet talking about positive this negative that and
i understand and i just talked about it earlier and i talked about it in the first question i'm
not necessarily against it but this is not about it, but this is not about your narrative to
yourself. This is not about your internal dialogue. This is about you going out and doing
and setting forth on what it is that you talk to yourself about that you wanted to do.
That's what this is about.
This is not about, oh, I need to have a positive attitude.
I need to cut out people that are negative.
No, you need to go and do.
You need to do something.
You want to believe in yourself, you've got to do something.
Somebody asked me today in the gym.
They were like yeah
man I've been listening to the podcast been a fan of yours for a while and we
got talking about social media and stuff and this is not an old-school fan this
is a younger guy younger cat and so he's like hey man like how'd you like bought
your social media it's like you know it, it's like, how do I explain
that? I never tried to blow out my social media. I squatted a thousand pounds. I benched
854. I deadlifted 766. I feel like I need a t-shirt that says that. Maybe I should make
one of those, huh? I had some feats of strength and power lifting that are recognized as
being beyond good right in a lot of people's eyes a lot of other people that have power lifted
they view that as being great you let that lie and let that sit where you want
1080 squat 854 bench 766 dead deadlift. Yes, it was equipped.
It was also back at a time where there wasn't really a lot of raw powerlifting going on.
So I decided to play the game the way the game was played at that time.
It's kind of like years ago, boxing was still huge.
And now MMA is the thing, right?
So that was my sport. Powerlifting was done
with a bench shirt and squat suit and so on. Anyway, in building myself up that way,
that's what led to the following on social media because I was recording and I was tracking all this stuff via YouTube.
I had a YouTube channel, supertraining.tv.
Remember I always talked about supertraining.tv,
the strongest gym in the West.
And I built a reputation that way, and that helped build everything out.
But it was before social media.
I had an account on something called Putfile.
And then I was also on MySpace.
And I was also on YouTube.
Very early adopter.
You can go back and look.
If you search on my YouTube, like, search Jake Bell Quindell, and the first video that you'll see is my son, for the first time ever, meeting his sister.
That's how long, my son is, my son is going to be 19.
My son is going to be 19, my daughter is 15.
She'll be 16 in September. that's how old that shit is so if you want to believe in yourself and you want to start to
trust in yourself it starts with small steps because look how did I build a how
did I build a empire within powerlifting I I mean, let's just call it that.
I think that's what it is.
I think that's fair to say.
People always said there's no money in powerlifting.
You can't do it that way.
You can't do this.
You can't do that.
And I did.
But it was built with small steps.
It was built by benching, squatting, deadlifting from the time I was 12 years old.
And just really pushing that to new heights as I got older.
And I power lifted for 30 years.
I lifted in my high school gym just like many of you.
I lifted at my local YMCA.
I lifted at my local Gold's Gym. I used to lift at commercial gyms. I
was lifting in commercial gyms back when they accepted you. They wanted strength athletes
in there. They didn't mind the chalk. They didn't mind people bleeding. They didn't mind people uh bleeding they didn't mind some of that they actually dug it especially
like a world gym i trained it a lot of you know i guess people would call them hardcore gyms
they're really nothing like the gyms today they're quite different but that's where my
baby steps were taken and that's where my humility was was busted and that's where my humility was busted and that's where my cherry was popped
was in those places. You know, your humility, your humanity, your, your,
you know, when you're a teenager, you got a chip on your shoulder and you think you're tough and
all this. I'd walk in there backwards hat and thinking I could fucking do this or that. I couldn't do shit.
I was naturally fairly strong, but I really sucked
on stuff like squats. 315 squat was really tough
for me. And yeah, I was a young kid, so 315 squat is still nothing to sneeze at.
But realistically to depth, 275
raw at like 16, 17.
And I'm not saying that's necessarily good or bad, but that's a far cry from where I ended up.
It took a lot of, and I was a horrible squatter.
Horrible.
I'd try to squat 365, I'd get buried.
315, I'd get buried.
There's young kids now that can do that for 30 reps.
Easy.
And so my beginnings started out the same as just about anybody else's.
Humble beginnings, small steps, one foot in front of the other.
Gratum forocitor, step-by-step ferociously.
But so much of this stuff is not about necessarily just your thoughts,
although agency over your thoughts is going to be one of the more critical things you ever learn,
and it's going to be a huge part of your maturation.
But you also have to go and do.
So there's a psychological state, but there's also a physiological state. But if you don't get
in line with that, if you don't get in line with being physical and improving yourself physically,
it's going to be hard to ever draw upon all the mental capacities that you have.
Because remember what I said earlier, it literally will retard your abilities
to grab access to the knowledge that you have
when your when your psychological state is compromised because of emotions
in addition to that when your physical traits are weak and they're not strong, that's going to compromise your mind even more.
You know what I'm talking about.
You get to that breaking point and you want to break and you fold up and you do.
What about when you fold up and you don't?
What about when it's time to fold up and you don't?
What happens then?
What happens tomorrow if you're like, you know,
I'm going to go out on a 10 minute walk and you watch for 15 minutes.
What happens tomorrow when you say, I'm going to go in a gym and just do some biceps.
And then you do biceps, triceps, and shoulders. What's going to happen when you're in the middle
of a set and you're on rep number 10, you're like, no, I'm going to do 12. You get to 12 and you're in the middle of a set and you're on rep number 10 you're like no I'm going to do 12 you get to 12 and you're like fuck it I'm going to 15 you do 15 like fuck it why why
even bother with numbers I'm just going to keep going till I just literally can't go any further
mindsets take yourself to the quote-unquote breaking point and when you think you're at
the breaking point do a couple more maybe rest 10 seconds and go at it again build up your mind these are these
are mind sets mindset mind sets burn a hole into your brain cauterize your fucking brain
brand that motherfucker sing Singe it.
Singe that stuff into your brain that you're a champion,
that you're a winner,
that you know how to do it,
that you know what to do
when you're up against it.
Because when you prove yourself
to yourself
and you improve yourself
for yourself,
you will just know this.
You'll know this in your gut.
You'll know this in your bones.
You'll know this in your blood.
It'll be part of your day-to-day and you'll feel like you have a motherfucking superpower.
That is why I talk about this shit non-stop. And that's why I won't stop. And that's why the Power Project is going to keep cranking along. And that's why Andrew and then Seema and myself,
we're going to keep getting stronger. We're going to keep getting better.
We're going to keep getting in better shape.
And we're going to keep delivering better messages to you guys.
And we're going to continue to deliver the best fucking podcast that you can imagine with the best fucking guests.
Because it is my mission.
I'm on a mission. And I need all of you guys as well.
I want to make the world a better place to lift.
I want to lower the barrier of entry into fitness, into nutrition,
and have people understand that it ain't that hard to get stronger.
It ain't that hard to get leaner.
It's easy.
It actually is really, really easy.
And when you do it, guess what?
It snowballs on top of itself.
It propagates itself for you.
That is the most insane thing ever.
Being a loser, laying around being a loser, not wanting to get up
off the couch, it propagates that. And that'll grow within you and that will grow inside
you as well. You'll end up sitting there and you'll end up having barnacles on you. But
an object in motion stays in motion. And a human being that gets in motion is un-fucking-stoppable.
So join in the Power Project.
Tag people.
Share this podcast out with others.
Leave us reviews.
Get fired up.
And be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
Be that positive, strong energy for other people.
But be the person that's doing.
My family here this week, they saw me walking.
They saw me running.
They saw me leaving for the gym.
And I was around for other shit too.
I was around to be around the family, to sit down and talk with them too.
And I had some drinks with them and I enjoyed their company.
And we talked and did all kinds of stuff.
But they know.
They know.
I know.
They know I'm not a person to be fucked with when it comes to this kind of stuff.
not a person to be fucked with when it comes to this kind of stuff.
The discipline will equal freedom for you.
As you may have heard Jocko Willink say, it will set you free.
Get those mindsets in and start to burn self-belief into yourself.
Belief in yourself is going to be one of the most empowering, most powerful things that you ever work on and work for and work towards.
Strength is never weakness. Weakness is never strength. Andrew, take us on out of here. Catch you guys later.
