More on advertisers later this episode.
So this episode, we have a lot to talk about,
and we have so much to talk about
that it's actually changing almost by the minute.
Right before the episode, there was two things that happened.
It is the season.
There was a tragic accident.
Well, there was two tragic accidents that have
all greatly altered the path of this podcast tragedies that have put us on a very different
I don't know which one is more tragic honestly at this point maybe yeah we will let the people
decide so the first one was I was going to surprise you Tanner with a beautiful platter
of nachos navidad ah the taco the Taco John's holiday season classic.
And I drove all the way across town.
I go get the nachos Navidad.
I come home, and this is at, I get home.
First of all, none of the damn delivery apps in town
let you order from Taco John's.
Which is a travesty.
And the ones that do, don't have nachos Navidad on the menu.
So I can't find in the thing to hit the nachos navidad button you think that what you just
said there alone would be like the bad thing that happened because that's pretty bad no places
so me thinking outside the box actually this isn't thinking outside the box no thinking outside the
bell i'm thinking very outside the bell i decide i'll do it myself so for people that need to know
how the schedule of
what this podcast works, you show up to my house around seven 30, we start recording around eight
30. So there's an hour gap in there, which means nachos Navidad have to sit around for at least an
hour from doing this myself. So I drive to taco Johns at seven o'clock. I get there by the time
I get the order, get home and all that. It's like seven 30. It's a half hour process to do this,
which sounds insane, but that's how long it takes.
So I get home.
We have this thing in our oven in the bottom.
It's a lower oven that you can set really, really low to keep things warm.
Like there's a warming setting.
And so I'm looking at these two platters of nachos Navidad thinking, I don't want to like
scrape all the nachos out of the platter onto like a tray.
It loses a little something if you start transporting nachos multiple times.
Well, yeah, and the chefs at Taco John's are well-trained in how to properly plate a dish.
And I hate to let their handiwork go and just get thrown away like that.
Part of how you grade Taco John's is the presentation.
The experience and presentation is just as much a part of the flavor there.
So I didn't want to do that.
So I thought on the very lowest setting,
I can set it in the oven and it will be okay.
And.
And that's where things went wrong.
This is where my first mistake was.
And so I do that.
I wait about five minutes.
You show up and I'm thinking,
Oh,
I'm going to trick Tanner.
So good.
I think outside the bun,
isn't it?
Yeah.
Okay. Sorry. But we were thinking outside the belt. Yeah. Right.'s think outside the bun, isn't it? Yeah, that's right.
But we were thinking outside the belt.
Yeah, right, right.
Because we didn't go to taco.
Yeah, yeah, okay.
And I could like smell tacos already.
I could smell nachos by the time you show up in five minutes.
I'm like, oh, I better check on how these are doing.
I pull open the drawer and the tray is already starting to melt.
The tray is holding these nachos.
It's already starting to melt to the bottom of the oven,
which is not what you want.
You can't have nachos Navidad with plastic.
That's not how it goes.
So rather than try and salvage this thing, I just had to.
That'd be nachos Navidad.
It was a nachos Navidad.
So I had to just spill the beans to you right away, Tanner.
My cool beans were spilled to you.
They got spilled to the bottom of the oven warmer.
So we took them out of the oven uh we had a few but on the on the subject of that though they weren't
completely honest with us either because nachos navidad as far as i know and what all the pictures
say it's supposed to be festive green and red chips and these were regular arguably that's a
lot of what makes nachos navidad nachos i'd actually say that's the only thing that separates
it from their super nachos.
Just nachos?
Yeah.
Wait a second.
Maybe that's the thing.
People order nachos Navidad.
They don't really carry that anymore.
No, they do.
I looked on their website, and it said nachos Navidad.
And when I said, can I get two orders of nachos Navidad, the guy's like, oh, yeah.
Like, oh, we get a lot of requests for that.
And then like, oh, yeah, here you go.
A plate of regular nachos.
To get home and see just regular corn chip or corn tortilla nachos on there it was a bit of a disappointment when did
you first notice that when you got home when i got home yeah that's because i didn't look in the bag
in the car yeah you assume the experts there know what they're doing i honestly expect more out of
taco john's at this point you know like i'm a little upset right now yeah we've been talking
about them on the show for so long.
I know.
And then they go and do us dirty like that.
It's kind of like we were the John Taffer.
We went in undercover.
Could they pull it off?
And they didn't know that the people that have been watching
and talking about them for so long were in the building.
I can't wait to really pull a Taffer now
and just go in and chew their asses.
Shut it down.
Like, whoa, who are you? you dust not in my taco johns
are those yellow chips this isn't safe do you not care about your customers like they try to make it
like it's personal like you're like people die from this it's a personal attack how often are
people dying of these things?
They make it seem like that guy came into work with a pocket of dust
and sprinkled it on everything.
It was like purposely poisoning the food.
Yeah, yeah.
So, yeah, Taco John's let us down tonight.
Kind of hate them, but they just weren't as good.
You know, with that melted plastic tray on the bottom.
With the surprise gone, that was part of the elephant too so we got to talk about it for eight minutes it is funny
though because i had been thinking about maybe next week bringing nachos well you can try again
you never know maybe maybe you'll get green and red second time's a charm do you think there was
supply chain issues with the green and red chips yeah with everything going on the supply chain
that that would make the most sense to me yeah they ran the red food coloring is uh really green red food
coloring is on a real pinch right now yeah or is it the red corn and the green corn maybe that's
what it is yeah i guess we'd have to look at the egg futures to really know where we're at on that
which brings us to our egg update there's's really not one. It's winter.
There's no egg happening this time of year.
Everyone's in hibernation.
Becoming frozen.
So that was emergency number one, Tanner.
We've only talked about our first emergency after all this.
So the second one, which is... We'll leave it up to the listeners to decide
which one's more of an emergency.
Yeah.
Our guest for this week was going to be Big Anthony Furman.
And he is not able to make it.
Reason being, he was at the gym when I just talked to him earlier this evening
when we were lining up.
He said, yep, all things were all good, just like time we talked about.
We just went over a couple of details.
And he said, all right, great.
Sounds great.
Can't wait to do it.
And then he texted me back about 30 minutes later and goes yeah i'm on the way to the
er i just dropped a plate on my foot and we're we're laughing at the maybe the timing not his
he was laughing about it too and uh just now just as right before we were starting recording he
actually said uh well actually things are moving along pretty good here at the hospital.
I think we could probably get on,
get on,
still do,
you know,
our regular time we were planning on tonight,
nine o'clock our time.
I said,
yeah,
like I,
we appreciate the thought of that,
but maybe like,
let's just do it when you're not,
don't have to be just like fresh out of the hospital.
Right.
Or that,
or we plan on like talking through our stuff and then oh sorry there was actually some
things they had to look in they were like whoa he had nothing to talk about but he wasn't clear
he just said a plate but was it potentially a plate of nachos navidad that could be it i don't
know if that would hurt that bad or not though well maybe it was a really big plate of them maybe
maybe the green and red chips way more. We don't know.
That's true.
We haven't had them.
Yeah.
The plate that they used for Nachos Navidad is not the go-to plate of
McDonald's Jim for a number of reasons now.
It's the correct color.
Yeah.
But the color is correct.
I think it's like a black, what do they call that?
What's the coating called again?
Not powder coating. Oh, on grains. Grants plates. What's the coating called again not powder coating what's oh on on
grand splits what's the um e-coated yeah yeah do you think the nachos navidad plate is e-coated
no if it was it probably wouldn't melt it in the warming oven probably not right so we will we will
not have him this week we are going to have him soon in a future week probably maybe my guess is
like episode 301 ish somewhere in there we'll get to hear from him and we got a lot of good stuff to talk to him about so we just have to wait for
a week on that so uh you know our ip his foot speedy recovery yeah um but no fear we do it
just coincidentally we have a whole bunch of stuff that we wanted to talk about this week. We do. So.
You know, things we have to clear out before episode 300.
Right.
Right.
Because when episode 300 happens, everything's new.
Everything changes.
Yeah.
We really do have, we have probably one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, like eight or nine things we have to get through here.
And some of these have an extensive list of sub points.
That's true.
They have points and sub points.
Sub points to the sub points in cases so where do we start tanner should we start with the first one on the list yeah let's show the top so dare we say that we
start at the top all right we'll start at the top so we've been on the road to 400 now we've
we've arrived at our destination yep we're getting comfortable in the land of 400 podcast reviews yeah i think i just checked we're actually at 406 yeah so really just already still riding that kick at the end
yeah cruising that way and we do have our support we do have something real big coming yeah you know
supply chain issues these things don't happen overnight it takes a little time but it's not
going to take too much we we know exactly when we when the 400 reward will be out there,
and we're excited for it.
I think we got something good.
Yeah, absolutely.
I think people will enjoy it.
So that is something to look out for.
But there is another road.
Maybe path is the right word here.
Yeah, is it a full-on road?
It's more like a county road versus a state highway.
Yeah, a scenic detour on the road.
And that is that we just found out that Spotify has a rank ratings.
You can leave ratings on Spotify.
You can't leave a review, but you can leave a five-star rating.
And we said five-star because that's the only option on the Mathsonomics one for some reason.
Yeah, the other four are given.
So did we just find out about this today?
Yeah, someone just popped it up today.
I don't know how long it's been around, but someone just made us aware of it,
that you can leave a five-star.
So if you're listening and you listen on Spotify,
click on the podcast and give us those five stars.
Right now, it's also funny because I don't know
where we're at in Apple Podcasts,
but that it has the health category next to us on Spotify.
We're in fitness in Apple Podcasts.
So it's really funny to see health because that's maybe the health category next to us on spotify fitness fitness okay so it's really funny to see health
because that's maybe the worst category that could that's what we're all about health yeah
yeah so somehow we're under there but uh we do have 29 five star ratings yeah on spotify which
is pretty cool for only being around for like a day or so the goal is to get to that get that to
100 then isn't it absolutely and then i guess maybe we'll have to think of something to do for that
oh it's gonna be a lot of things you know here's how i picture it you know when you're going down
the interstate and then there's the side utility road like just off of it sometimes you're like
how do people even get to that road like what are you doing over there on that road so the apple podcast or was it that wrong or was it that wrong
uh where the apple podcast road is the big interstate we're on and right now the spotify
one is that little side uh yeah like that one that has a bridge on it there's no room
is that a usable bridge there's no room to leave a review on that one all it has is just enough
room for like a few stars that's all that can fit on that road.
Right.
And that is 100% what that road is.
But we will still take all the stars we can get.
Yeah.
Bring us all the stars.
We're like Hollywood Boulevard with all these stars.
Every last one of them, we'll take them all.
Should we read another ad, Tanner?
Oh, yes.
Yes, we should.
Okay.
Yeah, we're going to read an ad.
We might crack into a cold one here.
All right.
This episode of the Massonomics Podcast is brought to you by the Strength Co.
Grant Brogy was born in the late 80s, nearly two decades after buddy caps began lifting.
In the late 90s, Grant's brother Jordan bought him the new encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding
by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Grant's love for weightlifting began.
In 2001, Grant joined the local YMCA and began training with weights. In 2009, Grant discovered the book Starting Strength and in 2012, as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, he began
teaching Marines this method. In 2017, Grant opened his first gym in Costa Mesa, California
and the Strength Co. was born. In in 2020 during a major iron shortage
grant sought to bring back quality manufacturing of Olympic barbell plates
to America.
His innovation adaptation and can do attitude brought about the greatest
plates made in decades.
The plates were accurate,
anti-fragile and instantly became the go-to plates of hundreds of lifters at
the massonomics gym.
You can check out the strength co and their beautiful plates
at the strength co.com thank you the strength co um oh is this related to yeah okay okay um
actually so a story this is we got this package here this came just a couple days ago just earlier this week i was actually in the gym lifting over noon hour monday and there's a knock on the you know the
lower gym door the door that enters the actual gym you know and so and then someone peeked in
and i'm like also it's just really weird nobody knocks on that door like you're in there no one peeks in right
and somebody peeks and i'm like oh hello and i look go over and i'm like who is this and it was
a lady and at first i thought it was one of our you know she kind of looked like one of our female
gym members and i'm like why she was a female well yeah that was like 80 of the way there and
i'm like why are you knocking on the door come in is what
i'm thinking i go over and i'm like oh this is the mail lady and she goes i have this box here
is this site for sweet for she said site oh which i thought was particularly odd that the
mail person said site for and i'm just looking at this right now like i just wanted to see this it doesn't even
say that on here so i don't know but don't you say sweet that's what i always thought it was yeah i
never yeah it doesn't say anything about a sweet on here no but she said site i know i would like
i'm like 99 sure she said site and that stuck out okay it literally says sweet yeah sweet number four where do we have
that listed anywhere i didn't know that was the actual official i don't know uh i guess the
important takeaway is don't send anything to our gym address if you're gonna send something i'll
give you our other address because we really don't typically receive mail at the gym address whenever
something gets sent there it's always kind of a little bit of fuckery to actually get it because they
don't really know where to put it.
And I'm like,
Oh,
I don't really know what site this is.
I said,
I don't really know what site this is,
but is it to massonomics?
Cause that's if it is,
that's probably ours.
And she's like,
yep,
it is.
So she handed it to me and away she went,
which brings us to this.
The note.
Boys, thanks for what you do with your podcast and all the rest.
Concealed so you can use these for what's in the can.
Or just enjoy after some big lifts.
They're coming to you from Western, East, Northern, South Virginia.
XOXO, Big Derek. Wow. you from western east northern south virginia xoxo big derrick wow so these are from big derrick it is a true can and they are both wrapped and and bagged yeah bagged and tagged
and i would say for future reference to conceal a can this is the way this is the preferred way
to do it.
It looks like you took a sheet of paper, folded it, taped it around it.
It makes it significantly easier for us to figure out what's in the damn can.
Yeah.
Well, shall we?
And I don't know what tells me, but just looking at this and by the size, I'm feeling beerish.
I think it's beerish, too.
Or alcohol of some kind.
It's just a can of just vodka. Oh, it's beer. Oh too. Or alcohol of some kind. It's just a can of just vodka.
Oh, it's beer.
Definitely smells like beer.
Yep.
Mmm.
Okay.
It's a thick beer.
Yeah.
Oh, it's fairly dark, too.
Oh, it is.
It looks...
It's the color of cola.
Mm-hmm.
Is this a cherry cola beer?
I would have to guess this is some type of.
I don't know how to, what beers are, but it reminds me of like Guinness almost or something like that.
I'd say, I'd say like this is like a porter of some kind would be my guess.
It's usually kind of a wintry thing you know a little darker bolder flavor because yeah it's a pretty it's a pretty hefty flavor i'm gonna say it's a mad dog 2020 i'm gonna say a porter maybe
it's a seasonal winter thing of some kind let's see here what do we got what do we got it is santa's cookies oh it's seasonal
imperial spiced oatmeal stout okay okay yep that makes sense to me santa's cookies here we go again
i totally get the oatmeal stout i don't know know if I get a Santa's cookies vibe from it.
Oh, absolutely not.
Spice profile ginger and cardamom.
Whoa, 8%.
Like, yeah, okay, there's some alcohol in this thing then.
And it's a big boy.
Well.
And it's a champagne brewing company.
Is it or is it champion?
Oh.
I don't know, actually.
It's champion, right?
I don't know.
It's actually champion.
Yep, champion brewing company.
Give Santa what he really wants this year.
Our imperial spiced oatmeal stout is made with real ginger and cardamom.
I do not know what that is.
For a relaxing holiday treat.
Cardamom?
More like cardadont.
I do enjoy beverage like this, though.
This is something that I do like.
I'd go three and a half on this thing for me.
I'll give it a two and a half.
I would absolutely never drink two of these.
I will probably drink maybe most of this one.
But this is something I would never,
I wouldn't,
when I go somewhere and try some things like that,
oftentimes I'll be like,
yeah,
one is fine.
Yeah.
I'd absolutely not drink the,
or be like,
well,
I've got that first one down.
All right.
Like,
let's have another.
See,
the beauty of it is it's uh pounder
oh actually that's something we've never talked okay there's two things talking about midwest
not even midwest i don't even might be salt dakota things a lot of people around here if you say a
pounder people know that you're referring to a 16 ounce beer some people will call it like a tall
boy or i call it a silo too even maybe yeah but like pounder is the go-to term around here
for me for sure i don't but as you bring both those other two people do say those other two
things they might but with much less frequency like right pounder is the going term in this
part of the country i'm genuinely curious what people refer to their 16 ounce beers as
in other parts of the world um so that's one and there was one in the
discord that someone brought up they asked what we call it here and i can't remember it now tanner
well also i don't know if this i'm just everything's reminding me of a discord conversation
at this point but i don't think this was a discord conversation but the uh 12-ounce beer concept, you know, does that exist, like, in the UK?
Because they all, you know, like, is not 16-ounce the pint, the traditional?
You're saying, like, a 12-ounce can?
Yeah, a 12-ounce anything, can or bottle.
Like, is that common worldwide?
I think it is.
I feel like that's a pretty standard size, isn't it?
But I'm totally guessing.
I haven't gone to Europe, so i don't know from well i'm just wondering because you order up you know
like ordering a pint you know it's like a pint is yeah but most most bars in the area the short
is a 16 ounce glass you know like i don't very few bars give you an option to have a 12 ounce
beer right here right so it's just different when you're on tap that's the bigger thing then yeah
maybe that's what it is isn't that funny though you would never usually would never order a 12 ounce beer right here right so it's just different when you're on tap that's the bigger thing then yeah maybe that's what it is isn't that funny though you would never usually would
never order a 12 ounce tap beer well you don't even have the option like right yeah right yeah
but maybe maybe uh pounders have you know actually when i first started drinking beer pounders were much much
rarer than the 12 than a 12 ounce beer like when i you know so when i first started drinking beer
when i was like say 17 or you know like it feels like like it was always 12 ounce cans and like as
i was starting to get into college it was becoming a little more common that you'd buy it. You'd buy the flat.
Yep.
That's what it was.
It was a flat.
Now you get, I don't, now you can actually get a case, but like at the time when it first
started getting them, it was just a flat.
So it was like, cause I remember, so it was like four or six packs.
We'd get on a flat.
Yeah.
It was Keystone.
Right.
Get a, uh, yeah.
Six pack of Keystone.
I don't know.
Do they really sell that flat thing anymore?
I don't think so. I don't, I can't recall ever ever seeing that it's been a long time since i've intentionally been like oh
i'm buying pounders right i'm getting pounders yeah uh because the main problem with them they
said so when i they the discord crew is asking what the hell's a flat like it's like the it's
just the cheap piece of cardboard that piece of cardboard that holds all it's like three inches
deep even when it goes about this yeah when you go to a grocery store and it's like what holds all the cans
like if you had a bunch of cans come on a flat a flat of cardboard yeah it has like a
one inch lip all the way around it's real cheap cardboard that uh is not strong but you would
call it a flat too oh yeah i mean that's what the terminology was right now for the most part
if you want 16 ounce cans most brands at
least around here have a case of 16 ounce cans you're not getting a 30 rack of 16 ounce cans
it's a 24 pack right but it is an option what about 30 rack is that what people say because
that's that is what i say of that too you know is that a is that a regional thing yeah because
you don't say 30 pack and it's also like yeah i'm getting a 30 rack of stones or i'm getting a 30
rack of bush light like that's how you end that sentence i'm getting a 30 rack of yeah you typically don't
say i'm getting a 30 rack uh well because those are the only two that have a 30 rack yeah you
can't get 30 racks of bud light maybe at like costco or something they probably let you do it
there but right uh yeah 30 rack that is funny that that only does pertain to basically those two beers
i want to know if people if flats though are common you know do we have flats in our grocery store i feel like i don't
see those but i also am not going and getting you know when i was 21 and you know for several years
my the mission at when we were getting the beer was getting as much beer as you can for whatever
dollar amount for the minimal dollar right right so you, ah, yes, I just did the math.
These pounders, you're actually getting like four more beers
than if it's like obviously we're buying that.
Four free beers in here.
Yes.
Yes.
You know, if you pencil it out,
you see you can't afford to not get them.
That's the thing.
You would sit and put, you'd break out your paper.
This was before smartphones.
No, you actually had to put pencil to paper.
Everyone had their pad and pencil and paper around.
Unless you were the uh rain man of of beer volume in the like uh we want okay we need the
flat of keystone you just four flats and we have forty dollars yes four flats of keystone and we
have a little bit left so we can get a sixer add that six around here get that going
yep and you're less in your head there's just numbers and cans floating around everywhere
that's what it's like but for those of us laymans we had to put pen to paper or pencil yeah the rest
of us got yeah got the pencil out right okay so wow that can segment that was maybe did i say two
and a half i'll give it a three actually
yeah i think it's all right it's just it's just not my cup proverbial uh cup of tea cup of santa's
cookies imperial stout oatmeal but as far as these go i mean this tastes like what these usually
taste like to me when i order these yeah i'll go with that uh thank you, Big Derek. Yes, thank you. Thank you very much for that.
It's delightful.
Okay, Tanner, we have...
I don't even know what to talk about next.
I have to say, this is quick.
I talked about this a long time ago,
and it was a show on HBO that I thought was so funny.
It was John Wilson.
It's The Wire.
Have you heard about the show on HBO?
It's called The Wire.
No.
Did you see the big conversation about The Wire?
Or True Detective?
Oh, I saw some of it in there referring to Lone Star Beer and all that.
Well, and everyone was talking about season one, True Detective.
Oh, well, that's really the only season that matters with that show.
Right, and that's kind of what everyone...
Okay.
That's the consensus.
Yeah, I saw them talking about the Lone Star Beer and that.
I must have missed the rest of it.
Yeah, that is...
Season two's not good.
Season three can be entertaining.
Got done and I was a little disappointed.
Season one is great.
What show is the show?
I'm getting confused.
What show is the show you were telling me to watch?
True Detective or not telling me to watch,
but we talked about several times.
The Wire.
Okay, The Wire.
I was getting confused there then.
No, The Wire is like six seasons and like 60 episodes.
But there was a lot of people saying season one of True Detective is the best piece of like, the best season of anything ever made.
It's only, it's only, the thing about True Detective is it's great because it's only eight episodes.
You can just, you know, it's like a long movie at that point.
And it's really super entertaining.
It's good.
It's one of the few TV shows that I've actually watched twice.
Again, it's only eight episodes, so it's not a huge accomplishment,
but it is super entertaining.
When it came out, I did think it was the greatest show ever.
I would just say the thing is having eight episodes
is you're limited in scope into how far you can develop characters
and how far the story goes.
Definitely one of my favorite shows still of all time.
Don't think it's my favorite, though.
Okay.
But other show on HBO that I love love we talked about this a while ago
it's called uh like how to with john wilson and it's like this sounds familiar it's in the same
vein as nathan fielder from you as an executive producer so it's in that same vein of like really
weird awkward goofy comedy they're like 25 minute episodes on hbo they just came back with a season
two and it's a funny concept because in this one he usually has some topic that he's going
on and it's not super relevant to massonomics but in one he's trying to figure out how to enjoy wine
and so he talks about how he doesn't get any enjoyment out of it and eventually he's like
signing up for wine classes and he's like i found that you can fit in better with everyone if you
just agree with what they're saying and just repeat what they're saying and all of a sudden
it just shows all these people having a great time he's like the more i went with it the more
we all got along and it's like yeah they're all the guys
like oh the tannins here the tannins yes and like he's doing the same thing and like they're all
just like going with it but then he's like i just after trying wine i still didn't like it so i was
trying to meet more people and then he's on the beach like in florida and these people come over
with a drink and he's like but these people were offering me a new drink for free. And it was bang. So these people, and so these people are giving out bang
and they're like, yeah, dude, it's like a really sick company. Our CEO is like really awesome.
And so then he looks up and he's like, people were telling me how great the CEO was. So I went
online and I found his address and I just figured I'd go to his house. So he finds, cause they're
telling him how big his mansion is. He finds the guy's address. It's in a gated community in Florida.
He goes up to the gate and you have to buzz in the gate.
And he says who he's there to see.
And they go, okay.
And they opened the gate.
He's like, oh my God, they're letting me in.
And he just so happens when he pulls up, there's like 40 cars out in front of the house.
So he's like, clearly he's getting in cause there's a party.
And he goes in and it's his, this is, I guess it's all spoilers for everyone, but it's his
wife's baby shower slash birthday party.
And he just walks in with a camera to this middle of a party happening in their house.
And they're like, who are you?
We need to see some ID.
And he goes, I'm with HBO.
Oh yeah.
Come on with me.
And so like, and then the bang guy was pretty cool.
Actually.
He's like, yeah, he's showing him like his house and his home gym and all this stuff.
And so that was really, really funny.
Did you leave thinking the bang CEO is pretty decent or he was,
I totally,
I'm like,
it is so crazy that his wife is having not only her,
uh,
right.
Or her,
her baby shower,
but her birthday.
And he's like,
Oh yeah,
for sure,
man,
let me give you a tour of my house.
Let me show you all the bang.
He's like opening up the fridge,
showing him the bang flavors.
He's giving him his home gym tour.
And I'm like, you know what? I've seen people kind of shit on that guy online. He's like opening up the fridge, showing him the bang flavors. He's giving him his home gym tour. And I'm like,
you know what?
I've seen people kind of shit on that guy online.
But as far as this episode goes,
he was being kind of a cool dude about it.
As much as you can be for a random stranger
walking into your mansion with a camera
and being cool with it.
So I guess what I'm saying is that shows back on HBO.
And you should watch it
because he's really awkward and funny the whole time.
That sounds,
I love Nathan for you. And the should watch it because he's really awkward and funny the whole time. That sounds. I love Nathan.
Nathan, for you.
And the episodes are only like 25 minutes.
It's so easy to fit in a 25 minute episode compared to this other stuff.
I'm interested in that for sure.
Did you see the Russell or he video where he his selection is?
Yes.
Signing day video.
So this is kind of relevant to something that just happened on the podcast because I guess in Russell's video,
he did kind of the cheesy,
I'm taking my talents to South Beach.
I'm signing with whoever,
the announcement.
And so he announced that he was leaving.
First of all, funny or cringy?
I guess I don't know.
I thought it was kind of funny.
Yeah, it was kind of funny. But I could also see someone being like, yeah, come on. I was going to say, if you're a fan of him,. I thought it was kind of funny. Yeah, it was kind of funny.
But I could also see someone being like, yeah, come on.
I was going to say, if you're a fan of him, you definitely thought it was funny.
And if you're not as much a fan of him, you'd be like, ooh, he's trying too hard.
It just depends on where you fall.
That's true.
I always like to see what he's up to, so I was fine with it.
But yeah, he announced he's leaving the IPF, going to the USAPL,
which I think shocked a lot of people, right? Shocked the world. But didn't he say? He said he ipf going to the usapl which i think shocked a lot of people
right shocked the world but did he say he's not gonna win five not six not seven
the lebron james south beach reference circa 2011 is that what that was i think it i think he went
to miami 10 years ago huh so there'd be a lot of people that don't even probably remember that.
Probably not.
Probably not.
But I think he took his talents to South Beach.
He did take them.
Not for a long time, but he did take them to South Beach.
Did they win two?
Was it two or three?
I can't remember.
I don't think they won three.
They might have went to three in a row.
Probably.
Well, because didn't LeBron go to like nine of like 11 finals or something stupid like that yeah but uh uh did he say like it was in the it was in
the his thought process was he wants to go after the best talent was did he mention that in the
video or not we talking lebron or russell russell okay uh yeah i don't know if he actually said
that or not but uh you would think that's part of the
thought process though so yeah so he says he's going there which makes it interesting because
two weeks ago three weeks ago sean noriega said live on the massonomics podcast we specific
and i we specifically said so what you know because he kind of had said it but it was a
little bit he basically said i'm going where the top talent is.
Right now, the top talent is in the IPF still.
But he goes, I pretty much means I need to go where Russ is going.
Well, because we asked, so what if Russ switched over and said he's going to USAPL?
And he said, I would.
Yes.
And then he very clearly said, yes, that's what I'm saying.
If he goes there, I would follow him.
So it is the domino effect right it is and i could give someone if your plans really were this year whenever when is worlds even
nobody knows that it's a total mystery actually just happened didn't it didn't we just do that
a couple months ago no nobody knows yeah i think yeah i think so yeah i think it's pretty recent
uh so i was gonna say if worlds is coming up in the next six months,
I could see like you're not going to abandon plans now.
Right.
But I think we are like 10 months out.
Right.
Nine months out.
That's a pretty compelling time to still leave.
That's plenty of time to change.
Yeah, and the more of those people like him.
So take that class, for example.
So Russ leaves, then say Nori leaves too.
Say a couple other do all of a sudden.
And the IPF world champ is lifting like hundreds of pounds less than what the
actual other people are doing.
It doesn't take that many of the top people to leave for all of a sudden for
it to be like slightly discredited,
like to the point where,
I don't know,
not discredited,
but just like a B team competition.
Right.
So the people are like,
Oh,
you won IPF worlds.
Yeah.
But like,
yeah,
all these people don't do that anymore.
You won IPF worlds as the seventh strongest lifter.
Yeah.
And then it doesn't,
I don't know if it takes more than like a year of that for them.
Like nobody to care about it.
Yeah.
That's,
that's what you would think either that,
or it'll flip the other way where it's
after several years of ipf worlds being so pathetic people will say well okay we need to
bring some luster back to that i'm gonna i'm gonna be the one to introduce some competition
right right it is such a fickle thing so it it'll be interesting to see but yeah i yeah i think it's
cool to see all right what's usapl gonna do with this because they have some momentum going their
way i think a lot of people were laughing at them for the last six months being like oh death of
usapl this is done yeah i'm curious to see what they can do with this now they definitely are
getting their shot at it so hopefully they don't blow it yeah they gotta you only get one chance
one opportunity that's right something about spaghetti and i don't really know it, but yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Spaghetti and something.
So I am curious to see what happens there.
As a fan, I want to see some cool lifts go down.
And the bigger question is,
so these guys, I'm assuming they go up to 198 now, right?
Because the weight classes are different.
Are they going to go down?
So it's 181.
Oh, 181. Okay, I was thinking 189. Yeah. Okay, so there's one. Yeah, 198 and 181 oh 181 okay i was thinking 189 yeah okay so yeah 198 and 181 right or
is that what it is yeah 181 so they or do they cut like well it's it's even kilos so it's 100
kilos which is what uh 220 220 then 90 kilos which would be what 198 198 and then 80 kilos which would be 176 is that right 80 and 80 is 160
yeah 176 right that doesn't sound like a weight class though is it i didn't think so isn't it
maybe i'm just making that up maybe it's 85 what would it be ipf 183 and then the other one's 181
am i making that up no i think that's right yeah because i think those two are like carry over so
i guess those guys don't really need to change weight classes
because they're right in line.
It's just those bigger boys that have more of a change probably.
Okay.
We'll keep an eye on it.
Yeah, we'll keep an eye.
We'll stay abreast on it if you know what I mean.
Yes, abreast.
If you know what we mean by abreast.
Okay, getting down to some real serious stuff.

Yeah, if you really, yeah, that's true.
You bundle.
The bundler, the Frankie,
the Frankie, Frank American Pickers bundle.
There you go.
Yeah, yeah.
Do you ever watch american pickers uh
it's been a while i did see a few i think they broke up did they i think they i don't know i
think frank and is it frank and mike oh that sounds right frank okay we'll say it is yeah
i think they uh they split up were they out of like ohio or something or iowa i was in iowa okay
i was gonna say i knew it was midwest but iowa and they the band so we outlasted the american pickers now
yeah and they're into antiques and that's like ancient stuff that's true yeah we have current
topics we got that's true they're just dusting off the same old dusty crap every single episode
uh but yeah i think that they broke up so no more american pickers as we know it
wow i have to pour one out for them but click and clack are still at it but yeah, I think that they broke up. So no more American pickers as we know it.
Wow.
I have to pour one out for them to click and clack are still at it.
Click and clack,
click and clock.
That's a car talk.
Oh yeah.
You guys on car.
Yeah. I think they're safe to say that they have that.
It's funny.
Now that we've been talking about it,
there's like a,
I don't know if it's click or clack,
but I've heard a couple of them have like advert,
like must be nationwide radio ads for like
advertising for i don't know it wasn't auto zone but like some oh you know boys right right
something like that they're doing the ads they're like the voice and they have very unmistakable
voices yeah no it's them yeah that makes sense or one of them anyways one of those guys yeah so
what else what were we what was i interrupted what all was i interrupted
i think we need to talk about this last uh thing here on the first one on the list oh should we
talk about the other quick even quicker one that i'd wrote written down we had brandon allen on
recently too oh yeah and um we had talked to him about getting ready for a strongman competition
he was headed over to dubai to to take on Larry wheels and they did arm
wrestle there.
And,
uh,
Brandon beat him.
Was that a surprise?
I don't know.
Was there,
I'm not sure.
I think it was,
I think there was,
it was a pretty fair match relatively speaking.
And,
uh,
I think you have to win it's best out of five or seven or something like
that.
And Larry actually won the first two matches
and it was funny because the announcers and brandon you know it's um it's it's just funny
how much actually does go into arm wrestling and how they could predict like the strengths of each
of them and like the moves and counter moves that they were making is they they all kind of knew
that larry would come out fast fast and probably like have a good shot at winning some of the early ones but then
yeah and he had more like stamina you would think of it as stamina but literally like
his arm wouldn't fatigue it's like larry's arm apparently fatigues much more so did you watch
this actually or yeah i watched it it's uh it's on like larigues much more. So did you watch this actually? Yeah, I watched it.
It's on like Larry and Brandon's YouTube channel.
You can watch it.
It's like 40 minutes long,
but I was fast forwarding just to see each of the matches.
And then it came like Larry won the first two
and then Brandon won every one after that.
Yeah.
And they do best of seven is how they do it?
Something like that.
Wow.
I think Larry won the first two and and then Brandon won the next four.
And you could even see, after Brandon lost, say it was the second one,
he even kind of just knew what he did wrong.
And you could tell he was even just in his face, he was like,
yeah, I just need to make the adjustment.
And then he did.
And then as soon as he beat him that first time in the third match,
then he was like, it was just over then.
And it's just kind of crazy to think about arm wrestling in that way.
That it can't be that much of a swing of things.
Because do any of the matches last longer than like five seconds?
Yeah.
Were they?
Yeah, because they're doing different moves.
And also just the names of the moves are like,
ah, Brandon's got him in the King's of the moves are like yeah brandon's got
him in the king's move and stuff like a whole like other language that's actually kind of
interesting you know i can more so see yeah yeah yeah you can you can start to see how that's a
thing yeah um i do think we should get john berzink on the podcast sometime and that's he's pulling
john um we could both watch that prior to, and he's kind of back at it,
and I think he would be a pretty interesting.
Yeah, that'd be a fun one.
Yeah.
We should do that.
So maybe we'll get Mr. Burzink on sometime.
We'll have to run up our manager and see if they can allow it.
See if they can align it up,
and we'll have our people talking to people.
Yeah, we can't just have anyone on this show.
It's got to be cleared.
No, they have to be vetted.
Okay, so that was the other thing I had on that and so were we going to talk about the
uh shadows getting banned i think so okay so and this is something i don't know if i would say
phenomenon or scapegoat common complaint yeah that i've seen i mean we've heard it
we probably have at least one guest a month mentioned that they've been shadow banned on
this podcast.
Yeah.
You can go back through episodes.
There's probably 10 people that have told us in this past year that they've been shadow
banned.
Yeah.
And it's always funny when we see that because usually what that's in response to is people
are saying like they're getting really bad engagement, like no likes and no follows and
all that, which we've been doing this long enough to say that that happens all the time right
yes i think it does like what instagram liked a year ago two years ago five years ago doesn't
necessarily isn't necessarily the thing that they like today and i don't think a lot of people want
to acknowledge that that like sometimes it might be what they like six months ago they don't like today even
you know a hundred percent it could honestly even be a week-to-week basis like the same almost we've
done the same thing we've reposted things over the course of a couple months and both times had
wildly different engagements likes follows all that stuff on it and i i would say over the trend
of us posting consistently on instagram for over the last six years you can even just see sometimes
slowly a migration of what forms of posts will work absolutely and like it there it'll shift like
some some like a repeatable form will be wildly successful like you're saying kind of like a
format yeah maybe it's like um you say like uh meme style video that's approximately 10 seconds
long that's what i would call a format or like a um a quote based yeah form in image single image or maybe like a four swipe carousel or you know like or a
60 second long video like just these not necessarily like uh this certain very specific type of meme
works good but like plugging something plugging content into one of those type of right templates
right might go well for a little bit of time and then just totally nosedive the next month.
And I think a lot of people like to use the excuse that, oh, well, I've been posting videos of me
perform, let's just say squatting, performing exercise X. And I've always gotten this many
likes on it. The last month, I don't get those anymore. It's like, well, I think Instagram's thing is changing.
They're like saying like, hey.
It's like ever changing.
There's tons and tons of people posting squat videos
and the people are getting like overwhelmed with them
or they're just saturated with them.
People don't even care about,
people don't get excited about squat videos.
They don't care.
And we're noticing that because people aren't liking it.
So because people aren't liking it,
we're not bothering to show it in people's algorithms.
Right.
And it doesn't mean that you saying that you're not saying like no squat
video ever will be a successful post.
It's just like,
there are trends like that though.
You know,
like you can,
I think most people would say like,
Hey,
if you had a good,
I mean,
pick your exercise.
You put a good set five years ago, that was probably
going to get some pretty crazy traction on Instagram because there just wasn't like,
that's what it was kind of starting a lot of that. And now it's so saturated and that's like a dime
a dozen. It's not spectacular, different or special. It's just not going to get engagement
like it used to. And I think that everything has just become more saturated on Instagram. So it's just,
it just is harder in general to say,
gain followers.
It just,
that is the,
the way that the matrix works there,
that it is just it.
I,
I,
we can tell you anecdotally,
it is way harder to gain followers now than it was five years ago,
but it is not impossible to,
no,
it is more,
you,
it just has to be like, uh, i think it's becomes more calculated and it i i think even then it didn't matter as
much like you could throw a lot of shit at the wall and like you could it would just kind of work
and now that's not the case no yeah it's not but then some people like to use the shadow
ban as the scapegoat for that
i think that's what it is yeah right it's like people don't want to acknowledge well they only
want to in a negative light but people don't like to acknowledge the idea that like instagram is like
this living breathing computer organism that is constantly changing what it thinks is of value
and what it thinks people want to see and it like wrecks some people's identity to think
that like the thing that I've been doing isn't what Instagram wants anymore, but this is who I am.
Right. This is important. It's like, well, yeah, it is. But Instagram's determined that most people
don't think that what you're doing here is that outside of like some of your closest friends and,
and colleagues, you know? Right. As far as like just random people, Instagram seems to think that
you just want to
see basically naked women you know like that's that's almost what that comes down to and there
are we did talk about this too there are certain situations where people probably are literally
experiencing some weird things or some um censorship of their account you know like uh
huck finn is a good example we talked about him you know that he has shown his ass in some videos and he's talked about this or done like the fake
boner while he's benching that one really does feel like a double standard and that is a like
to me that is a great example of a really weird double standard that it doesn't make sense
but it doesn't matter because there's nothing you can complain about as much as you want who
who in this whole thing who do you complain to? Do you write a letter to Mr. Instagram?
Right.
Air your complaints?
Right.
I just assume that any button that you have to dispute or report things
or to defend yourself on your behalf,
just assume that those buttons literally hook up to a mailbox
that goes to nowhere.
Yeah.
And nobody has to be on instagram obviously anyone can choose but
someone like huck finn he's also running a business or a couple businesses for it so
he kind of does have to be on he has a kind of financial vested interest right so he kind of
has no choice but to play by the rules that even though i think that's a great example of i don't
understand the like how they figure yeah you can't show your, but yet we're going to reward all these other people
for showing their ass in a little bit different way.
In a sexual way.
Right, right, right.
Yeah, like maybe that's the problem.
He's not showing it in a sexual manner.
Yeah.
That is weird.
But overall, you know,
and this isn't directed towards anyone in particular,
but I just think sometimes it's not shadow banning.
I don't think it is.
I just think it's like the algorithm actually changing what they think people
want to see and what people are responding to.
Right.
And when there's some people that have literally been posting almost the exact
same video for years on end,
Instagram's probably like,
Hey,
one,
you've done this 10 000 times and then two
people aren't excited about this anymore true so we're not going to reward you by showing this up
in people's feeds it's not exciting original new fresh content right and uh yeah a lot of people
don't want to realize or don't want to admit that they're shtick well there's even changes like even
uh more significant changes i suppose like on, where you can see what they've done lately, how they've changed more.
I think portrait video is becoming more and more rewarded.
You can literally see by the updates to Instagram, the way that the portrait video shows up on your phone.
You're like, oh, wait a second.
They got this figured out where this post now literally takes up the entire screen of my post.
There's no heading.
Right.
You know, they're literally like,
so those are the things to be aware of.
Like, okay.
And Instagram usually does seem like they want to reward people
that use the new things.
Right.
I think that that's true too.
And I think that there's actually weird carryover where
because you use these new features,
you'll actually be rewarded also across the other stuff that you're doing
that are,
even if this post doesn't specifically fit into the box of that new feature,
but because you are using it and we can tell.
Yep.
There's like this special bonus point behind the scenes.
And I do think there is an element of that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Is that you're being,
you're showing that you're a cutting edge user.
Like you're willing to embrace new things.
But that right there is a good example of a shift where and and obviously that's influenced
by tiktok like no doubt there uh where that comes from on that same line though i think there's a
reason why uh there's quite a few people that we follow that have very very large followings
and they're doing like every day a section of ask me questions and they're doing like every day, a section of ask me questions. And they're doing like 50 things of them posting questions because Instagram says,
ooh, thank you.
You're using stories.
You're super active.
People are sending you a ton of DMs and you're applying to these.
And you're spending this much time on our platform.
We're going to reward you for doing that.
I don't know.
I mean, I think those people do like doing it to an extent, but I don't know if they
actually like spending two hours every day answering questions.
I think they're doing it because their business and livelihood actually depends on
the leads and the traction they get in Instagram and to not acknowledge that and take advantage
of that would hurt them. So they have to play the Instagram game and do that. Yeah, absolutely.
So yeah, I guess we've been shadow banned is what we wanted to say.
Glad we got to the bottom of that.
Okay.
So all that to say, yes, we have been shadow banned.
It happened.
It's real.
And it hurts so bad.
I'm trying to figure out if I should read us an ad before we get into this next part.
I'd say might as well do it.
Normally we have a guest on right now.
So ads are off the table.
We say, oh, don't even think about it.
But today's a different day.
This is a horse of a different color, so to speak.
It really, really is.
And, you know, the hardest thing about Spud Inc.
is having to figure out what ad you actually want to do.
So many good choices. There's just so many things. I what ad you actually want to do so many good choices there's
just so many things um i know what ad i want to do i gotta get it pulled up here though
is it gonna be the hooker straps no i just did those so i can't do them again you know
here we go i gotta i gotta search it out okay
gotta wait for my internet to go too.
Well, you've been
shadow banned.
I think Spud Inc.
shadow banned me from their website.
I was buying too many things so they
didn't like it.
Shut it down. Ban of shadows.
We're having to pay people to work overtime in the warehouse.
Shut him down.
Come on. Here we go.
Today's episode is brought to you by Spud Inc.
And anyone?
The Strongman Stone Strap.
That's what I was going to say.
We've got one.
Stuck in between Atlas stones?
There's nothing more frustrating than missing the next stone just because you can't quite lap it.
We've all been there.
We know it.
quite lap it we've all been there we know it the spud ink strongman stone strap lets you get in that overload training by helping you out with the lap and leaving the place all to you just cradle
the stone with the stone strap lap it and then ditch the strap and go for the place the stone
strap lets you get in that extra weight and helps build muscle memory along the way but the stone
strap can be used for plenty of other strongman exercises from pulling to the from pulling to the chain and more um made in america
like always and you know built from woven nylon you can order the strongman stone strap at spud
dash ink dash straps dot com. Good stuff.
I want to do a breakout
a first time ever segment
for this.
Oh, got something
very special.
Yeah.
Do we have a sound
for that?
There's a new segment alert.
New segment.
First time ever with the segment.
It might been.
Maybe it's been a while
since we have a new segment.
And this is called the supporting our supporting members segment supporting supporting
members yeah so uh if you're not familiar we have a group of supporting members of the mass
podcast uh they choose to uh monetarily mentally. They support us in many ways.
Conversationally.
Yeah, in many ways.
And they give a lot to us,
so we want to, in another way, be able to give back to them.
So we want to support our supporting members.
So it's kind of like what's going on currently in the lives of some of our supporting members,
and we just want to give a shout-out to that crew.
And some of the benefits they get other than just this segment on our podcast
is they get to listen to the podcast live.
Like they are right now.
Like they are right now.
They get access to our private Mastanomics Discord,
which is very active.
It's a very active Discord community.
It is very active.
There's some discount code out there that they they get access to uh heads up on the latest
drops yeah sometimes they get early access to the latest drop they get to listen to the first 30
minutes of every episode that has a guest in the case of this episode they're listening to the
first 57 minutes and counting yes Yes. So here we go.
Supporting our supporting members segment.
First ever.
Number one, Big Tyler, happy birthday.
There it is.
It's a birthday shout out.
And he's on the Discord listening live.
So Big Tyler, happy birthday to you.
Woo woo!
I think he said he's 41.
41 years young.
No spring chicken. He's full masters, isn't old spring chicken he's in the he's full masters
isn't he that is full masters full m1 class okay number two um big scott dodds long time
supporting member mate maybe i think scott was maybe our first ever supporting member i'll have
to double check that but and definitely one of our first one of our first random supporters yes
right for sure as far
as massonomics goes uh big scott it's not his birthday though i'm congratulations to him on a
bench press pr he hit 405 for a double this week never done that before so four plates for a double
yeah congrats big scott and then uh last one for this week and also this isn't necessarily going
to be an inclusive list every week there's our supporting members have accomplished a lot this
week it's hard to fit it all in. We might actually have to lean
on them a little more to give us the inside
track on what's going on here.
This last one though, Big
Nate,
one of our top unpaid interns.
Congrats to him. He was
mentioned this week
by Dave Tate and Sam on the
Elite FTS Table Talk
for his
Dave Sounds?
Oh, the sound board?
What's the actual website?
I don't remember.
God, we should have made note of that.
Someone, if anyone in the MathSnomics Discord knows what the site is,
it's TateSounds.com.
Thank you, Big Ryan.
Another supporting member shout out, Big Ryan, for getting us that info.
It's TateSounds.com and what it big ryan for getting us that info it's tate
sounds.com and what it is it's a soundboard where it's all these helpful cues mostly like screaming
one two word cues that dave tate says and it's a really cool soundboard that you can click
click through there one of the sound bites is from when he's talking about the drink spotter too
where i can't remember what he says but it's it's good and big nate just jumped on here he says what happened well that's why and
supporting numbers this is a good lesson this is why you need to turn tune in live to the podcast
every week so you can uh uh just in case you get no one's being mentioned supporting supporting
members so that concludes our first ever supporting our supporting members segment.
I like that.
That was a fun segment, Tanner.
That was a good segment.
I look forward to that every week.
Yeah, I think, I mean, that's something I think we can probably put together most weeks.
So great, great chance for everyone to get signed up as a supporting member.
And, you know, you could make the segment in future, future weeks to come.
as a supporting member and you know you could make this segment in future future weeks to come now you know we really have talked about all these things and haven't really talked about
our now that we're done with all the housekeeping items at one hour we can get to the show yes
now the thing that we planned on talking about today which is the massonomics year in review this uh episode episode 299 is
coming out the last week of december here we thought what better week to recap the year
we're not like uh is it spotify um oh our spotify wrapped yeah it's not we're not saying it's
december 1st let's wrap up the year yeah we actually decided to wait till the end of the
year no no no no yeah there's there's still one tw's wrap up the year. We actually decided to wait until the end of the year. No, no, no, no, yeah.
There's still one 12th of the year left.
We can't cut this thing off early.
Yes.
So here we are, Masonomics wrapped.
So I put together just some factoids of Masonomics for the year,
and some of these might spark some interesting discussion.
But we just kind of want to look back, look at what we did.
A little trip down memory lane, maybe. A little trip down memory lane.
A little trip down memory lane.
Look at what we did,
how we did it.
Do we think it was,
went well?
You know,
can we do it better?
What did we learn?
We'll do a live on air SWOT analysis.
Find out.
Strengths,
weaknesses,
opportunities.
Would that be something?
Then we'll,
I already got it.
Threats?
Supply chain,
baby.
Also threat, everything that's been going on you know it's kind of funny because
uh someone that's been a part of quite a few of those with different businesses
it was always really funny for several years people would always like threats you know because
threats are typically something that's outside of like your opportunities and threats well yeah
yes yes but it's you know
people don't not people don't understand that they just take it they can't they just hear the
word strength and they just they just produce whatever just yeah right right it's like no no
threats are things that exist outside of your direct control right and pretty much if nobody
gets that or very few people analyze it in that way. And people just felt like the go-to response was,
political changes in the country was like the go-to threat,
regardless of what was going on politically.
And then now it's like,
I have to assume every one of those boards says inflation,
supply chain and political things.
Absolutely.
And those kind of are real.
Those are actually sort of realistic things.
Right.
But they would all,
I mean,
you don't even need to do that section because that's what it is you know like it doesn't even matter your
industry at all yeah i guess yeah now the other thing would be like uh competitors opening up
base in town but i don't know how much that's going on i it would not now it would be the
opportunity page would say um competitors closing down true market expansion that's what most places should
be saying uh our biggest strength i think is that we turn our weaknesses into our strengths
although some people say uh we're just too punctual too punctual yeah and maybe we we
work too hard we care too much yeah those are those are our real weaknesses yeah
it's and after the swaddle analysis we're
going to each uh do our disc assessment live on air to discern to determine our disc profiles yes
are you a d or an i when you feel that d also you would be the d really likes to push on to people
you know that's and into people yeah that's what that D does. It really pushes on you.
Okay.
First interesting fact of the year for the Massanomics 2021 year in review.
We recorded 52 new podcast episodes.
What?
I thought it was a leap year.
Okay.
I didn't verify that fact.
I was making some assumptions there.
And I can't. I can't go back and count them all right now,
so I'm going to have to take your word for that one.
I guess I suppose this is number 52.
So interesting little fact right there.
But 52 new podcast episodes.
We had 47 guests this year.
47.
That's pretty good.
And I would say probably about 45 new new guests never before
on the massomics podcast yeah who would be repeat ones even jonathan oldham and james strickland
i think we're about the only people that we've ever but we never did a well james never had his
own neither uh jonathan did have his own earlier early on like one of the first ones right we
called him uh james this was the first
full-length feature yeah he had uh so that one might be open to interpretation yeah right for
sure but 47 uh approximately 45 new guests i mean that's a lot that is that's a lot of a lot of
connections yeah that is a lot of 30 minutes to one hour conversations
with people that is true i just kind of wrote it's it's really hard to pick favorites that
was my other thing like which are the best i know today you looked at kind of like some of
the analytics yeah as far as like downloads yeah do you remember some of the ones that
were high on the downloads i know he said ed cole it's exactly what you expect ed cone stan efforting uh dave tate right um
i can't remember who else was high yeah those those were all ones that uh chris duffin yeah
just like the guys that have been around for a long time yep and are universally kind of known
and loved yeah it makes sense it's there that they're high on the list and i wrote down just
a few that i really... They weren't...
I wasn't going by...
Johnny Candido was up there too.
Yeah, right.
Of course, he was one of the two.
I said Grant Brogy.
Yep, absolutely.
Ton of fun.
Also, that just led to...
You could say it blossomed into a pretty beautiful relationship.
Yeah, blossomed into a sponsor of the show.
You know, the whole...
Maybe a bit of a catchphrase.
Yeah, the go-to place.
Cornerstone from that.
You know, Grant's just become a friend of ours,
so he's in the Discord community.
Someone tag him for not listening to this live
as we shot him out here.
But honestly, I love that episode
because actually I liked it even better.
We learned a lot in that one.
Yeah, I know.
I actually liked it better that we didn't know him prior to that
because it was just really interesting focusing on learning about the process
of going from nothing to…
That might be the single most educational episode we have in our guest lineup.
Yep.
I thought Jessica Bittner was a fun one.
That one was really fun because, especially for us,
we typically have
dudes on the podcast right so with a girl you never know what to expect right we sometimes we
don't have as good of a dynamic with uh females on the podcast because this is a really weird uh
section of a really weird section of something so right um she kind of she must have done a little
well she know who we are right Right. And she follows us.
She probably did a little bit of homework on us because she was in on a lot of the jokes,
which made it a ton of fun.
Cause it's like, okay.
Uh, it kind of was like talking to one of the, one of the guys.
Yeah.
That one probably was one of my bigger surprises for how much fun I had on that one.
That was a good one.
I wrote down Daniel McCam.
I thought Dan, I think he is a is a really uh fun guy and not a
mushroom just a fun guy um we keep a running tally on how many times i say that joke over the course
of the all the podcast episodes there's one for sure yeah that's actually one of the last uh
uh one of the last statistics for the year derrick poundstone i like that one just because i've been
a really long yeah long time derrick poundstone fan you know if you would have asked me five
years ago if we get to hang out and talk to derrick poundstone and he kind of he got mass
way more than i ever expected he would you know he doesn't necessarily chat in as goofy a way as we do. He's not Mr. Social Media.
Right, right.
But it just was wild for me to understand
that he kind of got Mastanomics on some levels
and know our thing
and had a couple interesting things
to throw in there about that.
So that was a really cool one for me.
And he is one of those guys
that really is at legend status.
Right, right.
He is for sure.
Mike Isretel i thought was
just really is really funny and easy guy to talk to well spoken of course has a lot to say yep and
then i didn't necessarily write it out this way but this may be my favorite one of the year is uh
dave tate just because that's really one that like 10 years ago if you would have been like
you're gonna have a podcast someday and dave tate is gonna come come on be a guest i'd have been like that does i would have said
what's a podcast yeah wait yeah what are these words you're saying yeah uh and then but that's
it's just wild to me and that's just a lot of fun and he was a really cool really nice um
really it's just really uh it's just really cool for us to have that connection
i would say so that's for sure one of my favorite and those are just some i honestly when i made
that list i started writing down almost every one and then i'm like yeah i can't just read off every
single person that we had it doesn't make any sense that is the thing and there are some people
where there's parts of the the interviews that are so fun or like really goofy moments yeah or
we start laughing a bunch and it's just,
there's so many of those that it's hard to even narrow them all down and
remember them honestly.
Well,
we made the comment.
I thought just the last,
the very last two that we both did were very fun.
We had Max Ada on and who was the one before that?
Sean Noriega.
There you go.
God,
just both really guess.
Yes.
Good guess.
And Candido really was good
yeah that was a lot of fun too too um this year we we celebrated our five years of podcasting
milestone that was an important episode for us important uh to hit that five years i don't know
why it's important i guess it just seems meaningful we just all know why it's important right
and we're about to close it on 300 that's true we won't quite
catch that in 2021 so that'll be i have to be a 2022 wrap up uh we started the discord that was
big 2021 that was big it was something we talked about for a while kind of off and on and we thought
you know it's not really fun to start a discord if only like five people are actually gonna ever
talk in it like is it just gonna be me and tanner basically talking to each other on it and then like three other people like watching
watching our conversation that we could just be texting each other yeah and it took one day i
shouldn't say it took one day the first day it became obvious yep that's not what this is at all
it is actually a group of people that are having fun talking about fun things that are all over the board from lifting to entertainment and equipment,
equipment,
uh,
just what's going on in their lives,
drinking,
going out,
um,
to the point where we have people that meet up with each other in the
discord.
Yes.
Which is pretty wild to think about.
It is.
There's also even like secret tidbits of Masonomics folklore
that only get shared in the Discord.
There are.
And actually special Discord-only memes even.
That's true.
That typically are intern-generated.
I do cherish the Discord.
I do.
I am on the Discord.
Okay, here's some product information.
These are kind of some numbers i put together i think
they're relatively accurate we had 33 brand new products for sale this year wow is that including
even sticker packs and that's that is not including sticker packs so you're checking
like more apparel items mostly uh yeah flags like yeah flags apparel things that cost more than like
five dollars but really things that were really new,
not if like we made this thing in a different color,
you know, like this is really kind of significant items.
We had 33 new things.
And we knew that from the start
that this year was going to be,
we were going to really try that hard
to see what happens if we really go nuts
with like bringing out a ton of new stuff.
Yeah, and that has to blow the doors off
of every other year combined.
That's probably actually more than we've ever done combined in one year.
I guess actually that included about 20 shirts and tops,
four or five shorts slash bottoms, and then nine others
is kind of how I got to that number.
Then I was thinking, well, actually, I'll come back to this next one, but as far as those designs go, I was thinking well actually I'll come back to this next one but as far as those
designs go I was kind of thinking
what do you think was our surprise
design of the year
that something new that we released
this year that probably
exceeded what our
expectation could be I wrote down
two things so if nothing comes
to your mind I do have two things that uh were new in 2021 that probably were outperformed what we would have even imagined
well this one cut like the kind of fit kind of fat one i guess that was i can consider that a
2020 product though yeah i know that's what i was gonna say like technically because it came out at the very end of 2020
yeah but that one the demand on that stayed just insanely high right right so yeah technically that
doesn't fit um ones that surprise me am i allowed to pull up the website and look quick yeah
there's so many it's hard to remember yeah and then also in that vein so i wrote down two for
that and in that same vein i was thinking what the flop of the year was.
I think I'd have an easier time with that one.
So ones that surprised me this year,
honestly,
the nice rack tea is actually surprised.
That's true.
That's true.
And that's really recent.
It's really recent.
And not that it's a bad tea,
but it's gone surprisingly good for how basic it is.
And I do like that shirt a lot, but that one has surprised me.
I would also say what surprised me in a positive way.
Lip shit probably surprised me a little bit too.
I kind of feel like I knew that that was going to be pretty well.
Yeah, you had a hunch.
But it's funny because those are both our military green shirts
with the black imprint.
I put those similar.
Raw Power kind of surprised me too.
That one's gone pretty well for us.
I guess those would be my probably three.
What would you say?
I said the dark side tee.
Because it's just sold a lot more than what I thought we were going to sell.
And I actually think.
It's done more than what I envisioned that as a design.
You know, and technically we're saying those ones,
I would almost say the breaking parallel.
That's the other one.
That's what I was going to say.
Something that's not on.
That's the other one.
So someone take Big Austin,
if you're paying attention to this in the Discord, Big Austin.
I don't know if he's here tonight.
He's missing his shout out on this one.
This seems like it's been so long ago. It hard to remember but it was really 2021 that actually was the shock of the breaking parallel shorts the way that those sold
yeah was just astounding there was multiple conversations we're like that's not a thing
right like we could never sell those right that's not possible and then it slowly turned to do
i think we could do this and then i'm pretty sure people want this and then wow okay we sold those shorts uh in like
an hour like really that was that was a thing so that actually would be for sure the the breakout
surprise that was for sure in it so shout out to big austin for for he he did really he really
willed that into existence when uh nobody else including us thought it was possible or he didn't stop to ask uh uh if
it should be done yeah yeah right and he just did it anyways he just did it and so we don't have
gold curls shorts yet that would potentially be the follow-up to that and i see someone's
mentioning the gold curl shorts now but maybe someday we will see that we're gonna say never
saying never possible yeah actually you could say, look, Kevin Garnett said, anything is possible.
Anything is possible.
Flop of the year.
Probably my flop, surprise flop of the year is probably the 8-bit party time.
I wrote down two things.
8-bit party time was one of them.
Because everything we do, there's a bit of, you kind of make the Venn diagram of, time that i wrote down two things 8-bit party time was one of them because we had everything
we do there's a bit of you kind of make the venn diagram of does this work and so for massonomics
let's take one of some of our most popular items ever 8-bit yep and mix it with some of our other
most popular items ever beer yeah and the venn diagram goes whoop. And the circles say massonomics right in the middle. Yeah. And we're like, this is it.
This is going to be the thing.
And the art looks great.
The shirt looks great.
The whole thing's really cool.
And it just didn't really sell hardly any.
Nope.
It did not.
You know, I think most sizes are probably still in stock.
Maybe.
We might be a few sizes.
It is getting down there. and that shirt is on sale so
as we bad mouth it go ahead and you can buy it for pretty cheap right now yeah you actually buy
really cheap right now um but that that was i think that's the flop of the year the other one
um i don't know if i had as high but the funny thing about that is i really do believe
in the grand scheme of the world massonomics is still a very small brand true i think there are
several brands influencers companies that if they had that shirt they could sell tens of thousands
of dollars worth of just that shirt every year yeah i do believe there is still a market for it
we're just probably not quite at the point where it fits perfectly it fits the best with our
audience at the moment yep that, that's exactly right.
And that is really the key to it, I think.
It's just we need more eyes on it
in order to be able to sell that, probably.
The other one I had was the Sumo Pulls.
That one was a bit of a surprise, too,
because we talked about that idea, the concept,
and I'm like, you sent the concept?
I'm like, damn it, concept yeah you did it man this is
if anything it's gonna you know i do very crude rough drafts but it's like you get the idea you
know like it's like yeah yeah if if anything it's like it'll be limited by the people that no i don't
do i don't pull sumo so it doesn't reply okay so you cut the the people that it works for the
audience is cut down a little bit
but oh it's such a funny concept it'll go over and it didn't it didn't do it did fine but it
didn't do anything crazy yeah no and there's still some of those left too also on sale right yeah
also on sale deep discount those are so that that kind of covers the the ones we didn't expect and the flops and then the
last thing on products i was going to mention for this year of course we introduced the drink spotter
which that was a huge deal for massonomics that's a very big deal unlike anything that we've ever
done before we went from buying cotton to buying stainless steel yeah and uh financially i'm not
going to say it was a risk but financially uh there's a lot more invested into buying
a whole order of those than there is a t-shirt that's for sure yeah and it's like we're at a
point where the risk had we never sold one it would be annoying and disappointing but it wasn't
like yeah and that's why yeah it wasn't it wasn't like a dangerous risk it was just uh
there was more money at stake than normal. It wasn't going to make or break anything.
And the results are in.
You know, that's going great so far.
Yeah, it was a smash hit.
We have none of them left.
The 5-8s went very fast.
Yeah, hopefully, you know, sometime in January, that's when we get a full restock in both the 5-8s
and the one-inch pin size.
That'd be nice.
That damn supply chain is really out to get us.
Supply chain issues.
And it's funny.
It's all jokes and stuff, but it's a real thing.
You know, like we experienced that on the steel side of it
for the Drink Spotter, we're experiencing it.
Supply chain, and I don't know if the –
it's a combination, I suppose, of supply chain and inflation both.
Both of these aggravating
things to make the price more expensive for us yeah we're experiencing that in everything we've
raised prices on all of our stuff multiple times this year and we're making zero more dollars with
all those price even in some of them we're just trying to mitigate the amount of loss yeah right
where it's like oh no we don't want to sell 35 t-shirts
that's not the business we want to be in but it's uh and it's funny too it's actually not funny but
in conversations with other people in the business you know selling t-shirts and stuff and
just we're us just wanting to make sure we're not in some getting some screwed over isolated
incident here and it's um it's not you know everyone's experiencing the same thing but
every time we order some shirts it gets more expensive right now and that's not an exaggeration
you know like the prices are going up every single time and we've done some price checking and
our prices are still actually reasonable prices are still actually pretty good to kind of where
we are with some other things but it is fair you know it sucks but what we're getting is fair but it just sucks yeah and i think um it's not done like those changes aren't done we're not
we didn't we haven't seen it flat line yet yeah so that's kind of the scarier part that is the
shitty part about it is but the honest truth about that the way we price things at this point when
we're when if if we have something and the price goes up it is not because we're trying to make more money on it it is because we are
trying to make as close to what we were prior on it yep it's just to try and maintain where that's
the honest truth of that too that's 100 true you know i don't think we've raised yeah there was
like two years ago we raised some prices because our prices were like too low right oh yeah we. Like, oh yeah, we're like the cheapest out of anyone that's doing this.
That's actually a real business.
That's not probably a good position to be in.
Yeah, like we don't need to be the Walmart here.
Yeah, right, right.
So they were like, okay, we'll bring our prices more in line with what everyone else is doing.
And we were there for a long time.
And I mean, we still are just, we still are basically the cheapest.
We're right in there towards the lower end of the you
know there might you might and of course this whole thing you can go to walmart and buy a much
cheaper shirt if you want to but we're comparing ourselves against the other players and doing
similar things to us and we're right there if not a little on the lower end on a lot of things i'd
say in most things we still are on the other one which we kind of like to we don't like to be
we want to be accessible we're not trying to be high-end exclusive.
Right.
Lift shorts.
Yeah, that's an exception to the rule, of course.
But yeah, so that's kind of where we're at on the price.
You know, what the actual supply chain issue sort of thing is what we're experiencing.
Yeah.
It's also just took way longer to get everything we wanted this year.
Yeah.
The biggest problem for us was sweatshirts on Black Friday.
Sweatshirts were an absolute nightmare.
We didn't realize that we needed to order sweatshirts in August
to mitigate any of those problems.
And if we're talking about surprise product of the year,
not just talking about designs,
I'd actually say then it's probably maybe the drink spotters in that discussion
because we had some estimates of like, if this happens, we'll be pretty happy.
If this happens, that's okay.
I think our estimate was, you know what?
If we could sell it in the first quarter of 2022, it went pretty good.
Well, we sold out in early December, so things went really good.
We celebrated six years of the Massanomics Gym in 2021.
Six years. That is still just a number that blows my mind yeah six years two different locations one location that's expanded twice
that's some big changes yeah i posted this on the massonomics gym page today actually new
equipment that we got in 2021 we got two rogue rm6 monster
racks the matching red racks they look great got the one uh rogue monster half rack which is also
a great addition so we essentially replaced all racks in the gym a huge upgrade to all the racks
which is uh kind of transforms the way that side of the gym is in my opinion we got the kabuki transformer
bar which i love because a great product that thing gets used almost sponsored and i just
the the feel of the gym in there is that people like that bar and when i say almost daily i mean
when i'm down there it's unusual to not see it be used i think it does get used daily yep
we got uh like a thousand pounds of straight co plates
which some people say it's the go-to it is the go-to plate uh uh we probably in 2022 that's the
one thing we've got to get more of because it does they change the look of the the feel of the gym a
little bit when you have those nice plates on the rack we got the concept two Rower, up to our cardio game, of course. And then most recently here, we got the Rogue GHR.
Yes.
And that's also ignoring all the little rack attachments.
Yeah, like a whole bunch of other little stuff.
You know, like one time I dropped like $250 just on new stainless steel weight clips and just stuff like that.
But those are kind of the big things
yeah the rack bar holders the rack
attachments which is by far
the most equipment we've ever bought from
Astonomics Gym in one year also
big reason for that is membership
is a little bit higher than it's been before
not certainly if you're a local
you'd understand this but there's absolutely no
advert you know
there's zero encouragement
whatsoever for people to join.
Some say it's Western Northeast,
South Dakota's best kept secret.
It really isn't.
Apparently the secret's getting out because we do absolutely no advertising.
We have no signage.
We,
you know,
I almost,
we almost try to discourage people from,
we make it as hard as possible for someone to find out about us.
Even when they want it,
they're like,
I can't quite find where it's at.
There's no sign.
Am I at the right door?
I think that will never change.
I really like it that way.
At this point now, you can say one thing about it and you're like,
this place is kind of small and people don't know about it.
It's kind of working against you.
But now you're like, no, there's like a hidden treasure down here actually.
It kind of does play into the whole thing. It does. was really my year and that was the recap huh i'm trying to
think if there's anything you missed tanner we got to go on two road trips we did okay yeah that
was pretty cool we did went to the kansas city the the showdown meet for the first which was a great time meeting people in person that we haven't one seen for a long time we're too mad ever so that
was or people that we've only podcasted with how many people can say they've had like an hour plus
long phone call with someone but they've never met them in person so that's a great like icebreaker
like you feel like you're just picking up right where you left off there's no introductions there's no nothing you're just going right at it so that was a lot of fun and going to
north dakota like that was a quick day trip for us and that was cool just to kind of put out the
local vibe yeah i think some people i honestly think we've sold more stuff to north dakota
since then that we i think so too i've noticed that actually get that north dakota presence going
yeah we have some strong supporters to the north
not in Canada, North Dakota
Canada's in the south
the actual people to the north of us
the actual ones to the north
so that was good
I think that's
we got a trailer
that was cool too
trailer was really cool
yeah those are probably the
main highlights those are now let's just see what 2022 brings i should say one other thing
i'm not going to say flop of the year but wake up call of the year we had the peeling back the
curtain here we had some pretty big plans for youtube before we quickly realized that
peeling back the curtain here we had some pretty big plans for youtube before we quickly realized that ah you know we only have 24 hours in a day not 34 and uh yeah we realized that uh we got to
put our our youtube dreams on hold for just a little bit because in order to work our jobs
our other businesses all the stuff going on with massonomics our family life also dumping like children also
dumping 10 plus hours into youtube a week isn't a thing that can work right now and literally it
can't and i i know you know a lot of people like to talk about how hard they work i can't honestly
say um you know pretty objectively we're both of us between jobs and this we're working a lot of
hours right like the way that we're burning the candle.
And it's not just working hours.
It's when you're not working, you're thinking about like every once in a while.
Well, you're never not.
Every once in a while.
You're never not kind of working on it.
My wife will catch me and I'll just be like staring at something.
And she's like, so say don't.
And I go, what?
She goes, something's going on up there.
Stop it.
And I'm like, oh, sorry.
And then just a little bit later
i'm zoning out on that same thing she goes okay what what are you and tanner talking about this
week and i'm like ah and that's the thing like it might not be physical work but mentally it's
pretty much all consuming it's funny the mental side of it too it is it is all consuming actually
at a certain point and not in a bad like no not in a bad way but it is like
it is like it's all uh taking up bandwidth it is and that's one thing that i do have to uh be a
little more aware of because i do know that i have kind of i know for a fact that i have good ideas
hit me and i have had ideas hit me just when you give your brain when you clear the bandwidth and
just give it some time to just let stuff happen and just kind of freely think not be so dialed focused in on one thing
like these ideas start to pop in and when you're really really busy all the time you kind of lose
your ability for your brain to just kind of wander yeah and uh that's something that i probably need
to try and make a little more time like when you it like the shower ideas or whatever that is the perfect time for yeah yeah yeah and uh it's just tough because between all the stuff you have going
on and podcasts and things you want to focus on it's tough to kind of just cut all the crap and
just like let your brain wander freely wherever it wants to go but that's where a lot of the good
ideas come from well and to get to your original point, what you brought up, I mean, it did come down to the point where we realized we literally can't do it.
We can't add that.
Like, I would love, and I think we're both in agreement,
we would love to have that as a big piece of the puzzle right now.
Before we even got started, we have in our to-do list,
we have like 50 video topics. Like like we had a year's worth of video
ideas planned out and i think most of the ideas a lot of them are very original no one's done
them before and i think a lot of them would be really entertaining people would like it but
we just do not have the time by the time me and you go down to the gym set up the equipment go
through it get some things going film it it, edit it, talk it through,
do a few reviews of it, make some cuts, post it, get it out there, promote it, talk about it.
It's like, all right, yep, we've together dumped 20 plus hours into this thing.
And we don't have that much time to spend right now.
Basically, I guess at this point, that's not going to happen until,
Yeah, basically, I guess at this point, that's not going to happen until, unless we eventually have, you know, someone on the team that is able to, you know, that we're able, however that relationship works, you know, that they're a piece of the puzzle in that way.
Otherwise, it's just, it's literally not, not possible.
I know. But it's not like, oh, why don't you just work a little harder?
You know, it's literally, there are not. Yeah, it's not like, oh, why don't you just work a little harder? You know, it's literally there are not.
Yeah, it's not a work harder thing.
It's like, no, there's not enough hours in the day.
Right.
And to still have a family that doesn't hate and resent me for being absent 24-7.
Yeah, it's all, it is an old juggling act.
You know, you can only have so many balls up in the air at one point in time.
And, you know, some of the balls are made of metal. If you drop them, point in time and you know some of the balls are made of metal if you drop them they won't really break some of the balls are made of
wood if you drop them they might get dinged up a little bit but you still got a chance at picking
them back up some of the balls are made of glass maybe maybe the thinnest glass known to man
it might break just looking at it wrong great analogy so that's where you that's where youtube is i guess
because we even talked about 2022 do we can we make the push for it then well we really analyzed
that we were kind of almost like aligned ourselves again like okay yeah we can make another little
run at this and then it's like we gave it a week break and we're like all right let's be honest
here we can't we can't like and if we this. And then it's like we gave it a week break and we're like, all right, let's be honest here.
We can't.
We can't.
Like, and if we're going to dump 20 hours into something, it has to be 20 hours into something that we know can grow and get to something bigger. Not like, because YouTube's not like we make three videos and it worked great and we're doing good.
It's like, no, you need to almost do it for a year just to even get some traction.
Yeah, see if we can scratch some surfaces.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Ah, YouTube.
So that's not necessarily in our,
that's not part of our strategic plan.
I still think we would probably,
probably do like a gym tour 2022 at some point.
Yeah, for sure.
I think that's a good video to do.
And really, honestly,
it's wild how much different stuff that we have.
Yeah, so that was a 2021.
And that's a funny one.
We filmed that early 2021 thinking,
all right, this is the Kickstarter videos.
And then we didn't release it for almost six months.
Yeah.
And even then we're like, do we even release it now?
Ah, we did it.
We might as well.
And then we put it out and people liked it.
Yeah.
But yeah, it's unfortunately,
we need to follow it up with one the week after that
and the week after that.
And then maybe three days after that.
You need to be able to do to that
what we've done to the podcast.
Basically.
And it's just that the podcast, the amount of production time required on a podcast is so much smaller than
uh youtube and also this is already one night of the week that basically don't see my family
yeah guaranteed and because this is a guaranteed one night a week where it's like it uh well
guaranteed in the sense we're gonna hit 300 episodes next week and we've never missed one.
That is just that's it's also insane.
Yeah.
The amount of consistency there.
That's yeah.
Unheard of.
If it's like some people say it ain't worth it's worth doing.
It's worth doing.
Right.
Right.
Right.
Right. You know what else is worth doing i have a hunch texas power bar yeah buddy caps first started lifting
weights in the late 60s he made power lifting in the mid 70s at that time he was working for image
barbell building gym equipment around 1976 the local machine shop started making olympic bars
for them and calling it the image bar in 1977 image barbell became champion barbell it was then that buddy started looking at the bars with the tent in
intent of changing them for the better in 1979 buddy bought his first lathe to begin addressing
the known issues in 1980 his passion drive and purpose now had a greater greater mission but he
set out on his own to make what he believed was the greatest bar he had ever seen and trained with
the texas power bar was born it was strong as a house with the best earning and maintenance
free hundreds of state national international and world power lifting records have been
and continue to be set and broken on the texas power bar check them out at texaspowerbars.com
i saw that uh working on this new bar that i don't know what it's called their giant
yeah they're uh ultra heavy duty what
is the what what's the angle they're taking with that thing like what's the well i think you know
so we have the texas squat traditional texas squat bar there's always been uh other bar squat
bars in the market that were even bigger longer bigger shafted more rigid like i think it's like
mastodon is a popular one i don't it's like but basically
yeah it's like what the equipped guys in monoliths you know where there's a bunch of people in your
meat squatting 800 to 1200 pounds you know that's kind of where i commonly have seen those bars like
that before and so my question on those is just because i know bar tech has kind of changed
in the last 10 years like are those bars actually stiffer than like the like the rogue ipf bar that
we have yeah i think so because they're bigger they're larger diameter okay so like under a
thousand pounds they literally you know some of those they'll say they are like stiff as a board
okay with that much weight on that's what i know because they're longer so i'm like well but also longer means there's more right the weight's getting put out
more to the edges too and that is the thing about that ipf bars in so tight that's true i still know
i think that they i think it's probably it's irrelevant uh most i mean it's irrelevant to
most people that lift it's irrelevant but honestly everyone in the world except a few people right um
but as far as that goes for those people squatting that much no i think it actually it's a real thing that i think
that and and as far as i understand that's what it's uh would be the monster squat bar yeah the
monster squat bar that would be what it's competing with well it's a big boy so check one of those out
get one of those we don't have one of those.
They do look cool, just how damn big they are.
Yeah, I don't know.
I don't know if we have a, if that, you know.
It's a very specific. I like the Texas squat bar, and that gets used a lot in our gym.
We also just have a lot of raw lifters,
a lot of people that just lift out of power racks, not mono left.
And not a lot of guys that can squat over 1,000 pounds, you know.
Even there, you know, like, when a thousand pounds you know even there you know like
when like i don't even know like i could say personally experience squatting like 600 pounds
i don't think it you know i don't think there's any guys that squat a thousand how often are they
taking a thousand outside of meat day right right right but i think it's smart on their part yeah it makes sense to make one to compete with those
so that if for the people that want one of those yeah texas power bars now has an answer to that
it does make sense it's just it doesn't apply to a lot of people exactly precisely precisely
now i think that that kind of covered all of our topics that we had did we get through them all
geez we didn't have our guest and we went an hour and 40 minutes thank goodness we didn't
have a guest this week would have been a long episode they wouldn't have even gotten to answer
any questions they would have just had to listen to our year in review heroes talk yeah i mean
that would have been unfortunate enjoyed it but well for their for them talking that would have
been unfortunate for people that wanted to listen to the we wouldn't have been sharing the limelight on this one no um trying to think of
i'm wearing the new uh blue icon tee it looks good yeah i'm wearing the old lift hardly easy
skull shirt yep yep also looks good it still pops still does it's got some wear on it and still
popping this one does have some wear it's been. I think this is kind of the going out.
You're going out in the economics team.
All right.
This guy's trying to impress the people.
Wow.
What is he going to a fancier restaurant tonight?
One of them fancy eating places?
He must be.
He's not just going to Taco John's tonight.
He's headed out to insert Qdoba.
Yeah.
He's skipping Taco John's and going straight to Qdoba. He's skipping Taco John's and going straight to Qdoba.
Oh, you throw this on with a pair of blue jeans and looking pretty fancy.
Ready to take the town on.
Yes, a Kangol hat up top.
That's right.
Don't buy our hats, though.
Date Michael.
Nice to meet me.
Date Michael.
Buy our shirts these new shirts we do have we kind of talked about it earlier we got quite a few shirts that throughout the end of the year we're going to leave them on super sale so just
go to our sale tab and buy some shirts for like 16 bucks very cheap yeah so and there's probably
some hidden designs in there that you'll know with
inflation and everything.
That was like $3 last year.
I think is what they say.
That's with everything going on.
And did you even,
did you mention the supply chain?
Oh yeah.
And with the supply chain,
the fact that the shirt is even available for sale is a miracle of science.
So that's right.
Buy what we've got then until the supply chain just allows us to not have
any inventory.
This is a good episode. Should we throw out a little teaser that early january there might be something
coming something special yeah next week uh is going to be big episode 300 and we're going to
share more on that we might spill a few more beans on that might fill us spill a few more cool beans i would say if you are a friend of the podcast you're going to enjoy what
we got to say in next week's episode big alex says was don't buy our hats a 2021 thing i think it was
yeah i think it was uh but really at this point it's a forever thing don't ever buy our hats
it's not restricted it's not like when 2021 ends here you can go ahead and buy our hats. It's not like when 2021 ends here, you can go ahead and buy our hats.
Is that the hat embargo ends? This is forever?
Although, also facts,
there is a real hat shortage right now.
That one's actually one of the most shocking ones.
It is very hard for us.
If we even wanted to ever get hats,
it would be very hard. The last hat order Tanner
put in, it was like,
here you go, and they basically slapped it back
in his face and were like, no. No, no, these no no no no no no no don't buy our hats
they basically flipped it back on you like i don't know if you even shot 50 percent on the
hats that you wanted to order yeah they really did they said no you don't buy our hats. Winky face emoji.
Like, no, they got me.
Yeah.
Somebody asked about Furman.
He dropped a plate on his foot tonight and couldn't be a guest.
True story.
That is the truth.
Did you, have I ever shared the story that I also dropped a plate on my foot one day?
Do you think I've ever said this on the podcast?
No, I don't think I have.
I think you've told me in the gym before.
I think actually.
Was that the why or? No, it was when I was in eighth grade. Oh, then before I think actually was that the why?
no it was when I was in 8th grade oh then maybe I don't know about this at all
when I was in 8th grade it was
a part of track practice
we were lifting
we were doing leg press hip sled of course
probably so we could show off
god knows we weren't squatting
the go to leg exercise
junior high kids everywhere
so I was pulling a plate off of
the leg press was it was there the old tricky one in front of it or did you let it go it just
i don't really recall specifically what happened i was pulling it off and it you know when it got
to the end i didn't have a good grip of it and it just went straight down like it didn't turn
it went straight down and hit me right on the top the bridge of my foot like
that and i was almost instantly in shock because it like really was it a 45 it was a 45 and you
know so it came from probably about three foot in the air and went straight down and i like
was in shock for a split second and then immediately walked
out of the weight room and kicked my shoe off and like the exterior door was right there and I just
uh this was in uh you know the end of the so it's like getting to be early spring I remember it's
real cold outside I kicked my shoe off and just opened the door to the exterior and screamed the f word like
as loud as i could this was at the school you know but like it was purely like uh it wasn't like
uh i want to sweat this hurt i want to swear right now like i didn't even couldn't
had like not good control over what was going on at that point and i was like and then i just sat
on the ground right as i were right where i, and my foot almost instantaneously blew up to, no exaggeration, probably three times the size of my foot and turned purple.
And so my mom, you know, so the head school officials came in and they kind of laid me down right there where I was and called my mom.
And she's a few miles away.
I had to drive.
And then, you know, we're 20, where I was at 20, 25 miles away from the nearest hospital
and they're going to call an ambulance or whatever. And my mom's like, nah,
get him in the car. And at this point in time, I'm like 220 pounds as you know, I wasn't small
as an eighth grader. So like a couple of the coaches had to like physically carry me because like there was no way i was supporting weight on yeah like i was like uh like my this was a it
looked atrocious like it looked like horrendously bad uh the thing on the end of my leg at this
point and they had to carry me and put me in the car and i remember my mom drove like a hundred
miles an hour to western northeast south dakota i got in there and
shockingly somehow no bones were really yeah and just bruising that fast yes it was just like wow
and like the doctors were just shocked that there were not broken bones that's actually pretty
insane it took multiple like i was had to just stay off it completely like i didn't
you know it was like bedridden for like almost a week probably geez and then it was you know
period of crutches and stuff like that for quite a while and it was uh it hurt wildly bad yeah that
sounds terrible i thought you're gonna say like found out i had like five broken bones in it
i mean it looked like if you would have looked you be like, there's no way that guy's keeping his foot from that.
People were curious about if you actually weighed 200 pounds in eighth grade.
Yeah, I think the last time I weighed under, actually, I think I probably weighed 200 pounds in sixth grade.
That is insane to me because I didn't weigh 200 pounds until i was
24 yeah i for sure and i i was our i was like by seventh or eighth grade i was like six
one yeah you know that helps you i and then i was i was like then in junior high i was kind of chubby
too like by the time i was most junior high kids chubby too. Like by the time I was most junior
high kids that aren't skinny. Right. By the time I was a junior or senior, I had like,
didn't get that much taller, but my body just like completely changed at that point in time.
Yeah. But like when I was junior high, yeah, I was like six foot tall and I, yeah. The last time
I was under 200 was probably sixth grade. And then the only other time in my life was the last day of basic training.
We were out on like a week long staying out in the field.
You get, you just eat horse shit for food.
Barely, you barely get fed anything.
You know, you, you're not sleeping at all.
And we came back and I looked like I was a cancer survivor.
And I weighed, and I got on the scale and I weighed 199
pounds and I'm not joking when like if you would see a picture of me you'd be like that guy is not
well yeah like you and which is really weird because I don't know you know a lot of people
would weigh under 200 pounds that's like right now I weigh like 200 even yeah right now that's
where I'm at just have a normal look to you. I guess I pretty much look like a regular dude.
Yeah, but I look like my face.
And it's all relative to, I guess, what someone looks like at other times.
That is a thing too, yeah.
But there wouldn't be a person that would see me and not be kind of shocked by what I looked like at that point, I would say.
At 200 pounds.
Yeah, that's wild, man.
But it's just different body types and stuff.
People carry weight differently, too.
And the height thing is a huge part of it, too.
And when you hit that height, yeah.
A lot of factors there.
Yeah, when you're 6'3", about, and weigh 200 pounds, it's not a lot of necessarily.
You're pretty skinny.
Right, yeah.
You're not heavy, unless you're like a
really unhealthy right but yeah that's not the norm i didn't remember when you're talking about
i was thinking of larry i'm pretty sure it's larry told me a story he was talking to someone
one time like on the leg press and pulling off a 45 and yeah the 25s in front of it you're not
paying attention yeah yeah i can certainly see how that would happen and i'm pretty sure he i don't
think i think he broke something yeah he did And I'm pretty sure he, I don't think, I think he broke something.
Yeah.
He did something.
I'm pretty sure it was Larry.
This story was a while ago.
I think that's right.
No, that's exactly right.
I know we've talked about, because we've swapped stories on that before, him and I have.
Someone asked how much I could bench in eighth grade.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I think, you know, around then is when I maybe ninth grader.
So I could bench two 25.
Really?
Like for one,
one terrible rep still.
Yeah. When I graduated there again,
like I already weighed like 200 and by the time I was a ninth grader,
I weighed like 220 pounds.
Yeah,
it was honestly,
you know,
when I graduated from high school,
I could bench two 25 for like a bad looking four or five yeah
you know i don't know what my one rep max was but i remember i did i did 225 for either like
four or five i can't remember which and so it didn't get that much better that's also because
i really never trained you know i'm dicked off in the weight training then was so different we've
talked about it before it's like oh yeah one of your buddies could bench like 315, right?
Was it Darren?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I was like, if you would have told me someone that was under the age of 20
could bench 315 when I was in high school, I'd say, no, it's impossible.
It's just not possible.
Like, that wasn't, I just wasn't subjected to that.
Like, all they were doing was actually training.
Like, that's what it, that's what it takes. You know takes you know it's like like they weren't like i was going in there and just
screwing around and you know doing all the stupid crap that high school kids do in the gym well and
i took it fairly seriously but when i was training like i weighed like 170 pounds at like 6-1 right
there's just you don't have the ability to put on much muscle limitation and none of like the big
people that i was around took it seriously to the point of like actually getting strong right like so i just had no role model or like
no one's setting an example of what what was possible and then the internet you know we're
talking like 2005-6-7 it was a very different thing that like you didn't even know to like
look that stuff out you know the little bit of training that went on in my high school gym it was uh some nebraska
corn huskers program that got literally passed around on like pen and paper they literally like
putting pen to paper is like taped on there and if somebody was going to do something they were
going to do this uh nebraska strength training program i always remember ours was they had it
was honestly probably like a bigger faster stronger poster something like that yeah a big poster on the wall and it had like a pyramid
scheme of all right if you think your one rep max is 175 in the bench then you go over and
here's a pyramid do a set one six reps set two yeah five reps set three four reps and you're
done the classical oh just like the dumbest like rep schemes. And like, yeah, it was just no,
not an environment
to actually get you stronger.
But you were subjected
to the weight room.
That's true.
That's true.
You know,
another funny high school thing
since we're on the topic,
it came up on the discord
this week is people talking about,
oh yeah,
like, yeah,
you could totally just have
a pickup full of guns
and go to high school.
Yeah, it's funny.
There's a president in North Dakota who actually lives in Texas.
The way you mentioned it, your story was very funny.
Yeah.
Because I did not.
I didn't.
So he had mentioned in Texas that they all could go to school with guns in their gun racks.
And I said, yeah.
At this point,
especially we're talking hunting.
We're not talking.
No,
it's every,
I mean,
literally,
you know, in rural South Dakota in 2003 with a bunch of 16 year old guys like these
guys,
everyone,
everyone hunted.
Yeah.
Like it wasn't unusual for people to get done.
Like,
or while you're at practice,
all the guys were talking about was wanting to go hunting.
Right.
And they were either going practice, but are going hunting before or after practice and so and our uh
you know like our principal superintendent they were also big hunters and like it was
also 2004 was different than like what it is like today and our system was
any everyone that has a gun don't park in the school parking lot. There's just across from the school parking lot,
there was a private empty lot that was owned by someone that owned a house by there,
and they gave us the okay.
Everyone with a gun just parked in this lot.
That was just 10 feet adjacent to the school parking lot.
So I was like, it was a small mobile armory because everyone that parked there,
you knew everyone had this,
like there's like probably like 50 guns
in this parking lot.
You know,
like if someone is like,
Ooh,
I need to steal some guns.
Like this is the place to go and do it.
And I mean,
a lot of people like at my school
had gun racks in the back of their pickup
with like three guns hanging out.
I forgot until you guys mentioned that.
I was never much of a hunter.
So I,
it,
none of this stuff really mattered much to me or I didn't really care I forgot until you guys mentioned that. I was never much of a hunter, so none of this stuff really mattered much to me
or I didn't really care.
But when you guys said that,
I had this flashback of guys in high school
that would have, at this time,
you know, we're talking early 2000s,
probably like what, a 1992 Silverado?
Like the first year was the Silverado
that would have the wooden gun rack
in the back window of the truck with guns on it.
Absolutely.
You don't even see that anymore.
That's insane that that even existed.
Also, as part of the difference in pickups, people don't drive regular cab pickups anymore.
But at the time, the 92 Silverado was a regular cab pickup.
It was a bench seat, and that's all you got.
And then behind your bench seat, you have your guns banging in the back of the head
on your wooden gun rack mounted there because that's where they went.
And yeah,
like it's like you'd go into the parking lot and there was the gun rack with
guns on it.
And then I remember them being like,
yeah,
you know,
it's kind of turned into a federal thing.
You can't,
you can't really put your guns in your gun rack and go to high school.
And I remember one of our teachers saying,
cause you don't want to mess with the feds.
And I'm like,
Hmm,
sounds like good advice. I don't really know what that means for sure but guns i imagine there's much different conversations that oh god yeah just like 15 years later
yep times are changing you know that's right now they're talking about tiktok and everything
uh they gotta worry about tiktok what was that called that trend where people would they'd
vandalize all the stuff i don't know what it was called but it was totally a thing
back in my day we just brought guns in our gun rack and parked in the adjacent parking lot
yep that's how that's how it went there it's funny like like everyone had to
go hunting so bad that they couldn't like go home because i was remember they're gonna be like well
i live 20 miles out of town and i'm not going hunting that direction i'm going the other way
so i have to bring my gun with me that was you know like in the case of our school very few people
that went to school lived in the town that our school. Yeah. You know, like a vast majority of people that went to school there did not live in
that town.
Yeah.
So guns at school in the early two thousands.
That's what it was like.
Tommy,
was that about the last thing we had to talk about?
Probably the last thing we had to talk about.
I mean,
we can come up with some stuff if we needed to,
but yeah,
buy everything. We have all our stuff stuff become a supporting member subscribe on youtube

probably. Yeah.
And it's funny because he
has a truck.
He's primal so he hunts
with a spear but he drives around in his truck.
Well, oil is technically something that's
really ancient. That's true.
