Starting point is 00:00:00 You know, thanks for what you do with your podcasts and all the rest. You're doing a great job. Hope everybody keeps tuning in. You get a lot of good info, a lot of insights, understandings on how to get strong, how to stay strong, how to use your strength. You do a great job, dude. You make things better than they are in real life, I think.
Starting point is 00:00:16 If you don't follow Massanomics, y'all do it. Social media, website, everything. Massanomics. Well, well, well. Everyone said we couldn't do it, but you're all wrong again. We're back for episode 413 of the Massanomics podcast. This time, the lifting podcast about nothing and about the twins. My name is Tanner. And my name is tommy and those two wins i don't know if we referenced the twins once last episode did we might have
Starting point is 00:00:52 forgot to have you had any postcards showing up lately no i was really on a dry spurt the snail mail has stopped yeah that's disappointing yeah i bet we'll come home from uh come well the actually it's pertinent this episode is coming out uh when I bet we'll come home from, well, actually, it's pertinent. This episode is coming out when we're on the way home from the Arnold, right? You know, this episode releases on our way home. It does feel like it's been a while since we've recorded it. Well, that's... It feels like it's been a while since we recorded an episode, don't you think?
Starting point is 00:01:27 Kind of does it's not been a while though since we hung out with uh big grant and everyone at big d and everyone else at the strength co big ron who else did we have fun with well i'd say it actually kind of has been a while since we hung out with them too though if i'm being totally honest here but if i'm continuing the shtick as pretending this is you know we're talking about something that just happened oh what a fun weekend we had hanging out the straight go oh yeah that's right yeah sorry i'm god i'm out of time i can't do this time jumping thing they had uh i loved their booth that they had these you should have seen it everyone if you weren't there they had these made in america uh black e-coated plates iron plates olympic two inch barbell plates they were they were smooth but yet so easy to grip i gripped several of them you know i was they were doing some cool deadlifts there at the event and i was slapping plates around and i was
Starting point is 00:02:20 i'm like damn these are smooth but easy to grip. I was juggling them like plates. Spinning them on the end of a barbell. That's how smooth and easy they are. And there was this crazy salesman with a mustache that was so enthusiastic about the plates. Yes. I believed him. I bought several extra sets there,
Starting point is 00:02:44 and I'm bringing them back to Massanomics gym. So you too could own some, some of these plates. They are the best. They are the best plates. They are the best weight plates that are out there. So check out the strength co the strength.co. They've also got barbells, clips, t-shirts, belts, just about everything,
Starting point is 00:03:01 just about everything over there at the strength co. And the show is also brought to you by our good friends we just saw as well at Barefoot Shoes. Tanner, you did just see them too, didn't we? Didn't we have a great time seeing them? Oh, that was fun too. I can't even talk about all the crazy shenanigans we got into with those guys this year.
Starting point is 00:03:20 This is not a time to relive it all. Vehicles they put us in to go to dinner and everything. Are we just assuming everything happens the same this year as it did last year? Chris Duffin kidnapped us again. He's kind of good at it. Barefoot shoes. Most shoes harm your ability by over-restricting your foot's natural movement. But barefoot shoes are designed with minimal restrictions so your feet can move the way they're supposed to.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Move with more strength and confidence in every step. are designed with minimal restrictions so your feet can move the way they're supposed to move with more strength and confidence in every step barefoot shoes was founded by chris duffin who attributes proper foot biomechanics as foundational to his success in squatting and deadlifting over 1 000 pounds for reps he helped create the company to provide a minimalist shoe that can be worn for anything from deadlifts to walking your dog whoa all those bubbly's got me burping go to www.barefoot.store to check out the best minimalist shoes available and while you're there make sure to use code massonomics to save 10 on your next order that's code massonomics save you 10 at barefoot.store thank you barefoot shoes tommy we're going to do a q a episode this week oh we haven't done a little q a for am i asking
Starting point is 00:04:33 you questions and you're answering them is that that's what i assumed i hopefully you've got them all prepared oh boy give me just a minute i going to need to take some notes here. No, we did put out an Instagram poll for some questions from you, the listeners, you, the viewers, you, the followers, you, the crew, you, the supporting member, you, the friends of the podcast. And we're going to do our best to answer some of these. And I think like what we'll find every time we do one of these, we get some real questions, we get some silly questions,
Starting point is 00:05:10 and we try to address both of them. So you'll find some nuggets of interesting truth mixed in with all the tomfoolery, right? Yep. We're an equal answering opportunity answers. Podcasts. Podcasters. Question, answer. Okay. First one is from big andy pandy
Starting point is 00:05:29 and he says who wins tug of war between you guys and your sister podcast oh our sister podcast i suppose being unpaid and underrated well and if we're just talking hosts versus hosts well actually you know what i was gonna say we pretty sure we have them in weight, but your weight's been in a little state of flux lately, so it's not even a for sure anymore. I'm guessing we still have them in weight. I think we do. And also, we have seen how some competitive tug-of-war games go,
Starting point is 00:05:58 so we do know the optimal technique. That's true. I have been on the winning side of some strongman uh style tug of war in my day as a matter of fact i'd like to think we still got a couple of tricks that would keep us winning that one yeah well you can't we can't bet again you can't bet against yourselves can you no never so we we're gonna say we'd beat the bratty little sister podcast but not because they wouldn't be a excellent foe you know i be a formidable opponent, but no match for us. Hell of a fight.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Big Tim Feathers says, any new shorts slash joggers coming in 2024? Isn't that the million-dollar question? That is the million-dollar question. Do we want to say we're working on something? Yeah. We sure hope there is going to be some new shorts coming in 2024. We've been working on that pretty diligently.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Yes, and if it works out the way we want it to, it will be awesome. But some of these things take a very long time, and this seems to be one of them. Yeah. So we're working with some cut- sew stuff which takes longer and if things work out i think what we would ideally end up with is a better blank than we've ever had before and something that we could make a lot of different shorts with yes at that point we just built a better blank is what we did yeah yeah that's kind of what we're doing is that we couldn't we were fed up with what was available in the marketplace and but it's just
Starting point is 00:07:32 it's certainly taking we knew it was going to take a while but it's we've identified the weaknesses and we've yeah i feel like i mean this isn't podcast talk but didn't i ask for another update on that recently and not didn not got an update on that? No, we got the update. We did get the update. We got an update again? Yes, we did. Just recently, though?
Starting point is 00:07:51 Yeah, wasn't it like four days ago we got an update? What was the update then? Chinese New Year is wrapping up, so we should have an answer shortly. That was the most recent update? I believe so, yes. Oh, that update feels like it was a while ago at this point okay also chinese new year i do not get this at all this is not the first time we've had this supply chain issue or chinese new year i don't know if that's an excuse or if it really is as
Starting point is 00:08:17 long and big of a thing as they make it out to be it really feels like an excuse right about now i agree i think we're gonna get somewhere on something at some point, but I don't know how long it's going to take. I think my hope is we arrive at something that we say this was worth the wait and we feel really good about selling it and we've got some fun ideas around it, but we can't build a house on sloppy foundation. So we're working on the foundation, the foundation is blanks. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:08:50 The classic blanks. The blanks strike again, don't they? They do. He asked about joggers too. Joggers are something we've kind of talked about, but we didn't. We have. Actually, yeah, we were looking at that just as a last-minute thing. We discussed it in, what, late October.
Starting point is 00:09:07 But we decided by the time we figure out what we want to do, get them ordered, we're probably looking at January or February. And then we just decided. Next winter we'll end up with something. Because it's been a while there, too. It's been a while. It's been a while. I can't decide if I actually say it that much
Starting point is 00:09:25 or if now that's just getting into my subconscious. Yes. I think it is a combination of both. It's the same as when the my wife thing comes around and then, oh, I do say it. Do I say my wife that much or is it just no one ever puts emphasis on that phrase? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Big Omar says, did the silly goose ever find his druthers? Gathers around the fireplace with chicken bake to listen attentively. I was just thinking the other day about how I'd never put the pieces together that Ryan made that meme until we were at the zoo that night. And he was showing us on his phone. It's in the vlog. Iowa Ryan. Iowa Ryan.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's in the vlog. He's showing us the meme. And we're going, oh, he made it. Yeah. Oh, that was so good. Ryan was the one. That was a good one.
Starting point is 00:10:19 It was one of us. Was one of us reading the story? Or were we all sitting little kids around the story? I can't remember. I can't remember if we were both children or if someone was reading it to us. Wasn't Jonathan in it? Oh, yeah, maybe. Okay, now I have to.
Starting point is 00:10:39 I'm going to do some research here. Google did the silly goose ever find his brothers. We're still just as curious as you guys are. I'm Goog to do some research here. I'm going to Google. Did the silly goose ever find you? We're still just as curious as you guys are. I'm Googling that question. Perfect little sweet Jim. He wants to know, will I make weight? He's asking, will he make weight? Actually, we didn't really talk about this.
Starting point is 00:10:57 We just said that your weight has been in flux, but. No, he's saying, will he make weight? Will he make weight? I hope so, man. He's got to get his diet tuned in, though, right? Yeah. He cut it close last year. I'm a little nervous.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Walking a fine line there. Yeah. Yeah, my weight dropped down to a new record low. I don't know if I updated that. I don't think we've talked about it on the podcast since two episodes ago, maybe, but dropped down to 242. I officially made the 242 weight class wow now for the first time that's uh are you feeling light and nimble yeah I'm feeling light and weak how much do you think your bench has suffered in this process? Oh, fuck.
Starting point is 00:11:45 A lot. Like, my max bench is way lower right now. I mean, do you bench 350 right now? Yeah, I can bench 350. Do you think you can bench 365? No, I wouldn't bet my money on it. I think 365 is probably like the... No, I think I could stay at this weight and grow that up a little bit you
Starting point is 00:12:06 know i i definitely could bench 375 at this weight i think i could bench 385 at this weight you know i think i could even push like if things go well i could get close to the 400 bench at this body weight 242 that's yeah good spot well and it's at like 6 3 242 to also like some people if they're 5 8 they're like 242 that's stout um but on my frame it's really not it's actually like i was at uh northern state university western northeast south to go to basketball games this weekend and just an old man in the 70s that i know that i mean he knows he's well aware that i've been into lifting for a long time but he even this weekend he goes gosh have you been trimming up a lot and i'm like oh yeah it's definitely something as apparent now
Starting point is 00:12:55 because like he's not someone that would like it would not uh be words getting out people are knowing he's shrinking well this is the closest our benches have probably ever been then yeah i don't even know what my max is right now but by default uh they're gonna be close to each other yeah i feel like if i gained uh 20 pounds of body weight my bench would go up just as fast again uh-huh but for sure but it'd probably go it'd probably go up 40 pounds or more probably but like to get it it would it would like i said i think i could get it to slowly work up like when i said to get it to 400 pounds i mean that would be a grind and take a long time i do think like i could get it to like 375 in a reasonable amount of time at this body weight but that's kind of where i see the for me um 375 385 is like where i could get to within a reason without like uh
Starting point is 00:13:47 putting on that i think it would just be a it would be a struggle honestly i guess weight moves weight it does i do have follow-up here uh how the silly goose found his druthers it is you reading the book to me and baby jonathan baby pit viper jonathan reading the book to me and baby Jonathan. Baby pit viper Jonathan. Oh man, this video just brings back memories. Yes. Oh, you pulled up the video. I went to the actual video and found the spot in it.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Big Bryce also says, do you think people will lift harder or will they live easier at the lift hard, leave easy classic in 2020, 2024? Yes. Yes. Yes. What would be the question?
Starting point is 00:14:32 Are they going to lift harder or live easier? Just like those two compared against each other in that year, or are they going to like lift harder than they did in 2023? Oh, okay. Yeah. I think everyone. Like with a change in lifting hard or change in living easy, which one would see more growth in 23 to 2024?
Starting point is 00:14:53 Oh, boy. Well, see, it's hard because we've grown in our numbers. So that makes me think that just by default, we're going to have more people lifting hard and also more people living easy. Yeah. So you think it's going to have more people lifting hard and also more people living easy. Yeah. So you think it's going to be about a wash between the two, though? Can they go both, like just more extreme in both directions? Is that allowed?
Starting point is 00:15:15 That's what it kind of feels like. They will just be more extreme in both directions. There'll be more people that are lifting really hard, but also more people that are living really easy. Yeah. I think the lifting hard is probably the i knew people were going to live easy the lifting hard at these events is always the thing that i'm like oh yeah people are still lifting hard they're here to get there's nobody here that came to not lift hard it's in the name big uh joffrey we'll call. What's the record for most chicken bakes in a day competition coming soon?
Starting point is 00:15:48 Well, we didn't have an official competition on that. I think Big Matt maybe ate six in one day. Yeah, that was the number that was sticking out. So that's what we're rolling with. I don't think I want to do a competition where we challenge people to eat the most number of chicken bakes in one day. Yeah, a day is a long time. You could do some damage.
Starting point is 00:16:03 If you're going to do that competition, I think you limit it to 15 to 30 minutes how many can you write down right because like i think we're talking about doing stuff not that i'm saying eating chicken bakes for a solid week but those people were eating right out there you daily calorie like they're not for a solid week like eating like double their calories or something you know's, yeah, you got to put a time limit on that, though. Reduce the damage. Big mostly squat videos, Matt. Says, what was the most challenging merch item that you guys ever made? Most challenging.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Well, there's a lot of ways you could define challenging. I'd say one that was way more of a pain in the ass than it felt like it should have been was singlets. That was just so many steps. And then I don't know if we ever told. Finally, after getting all these samples, we found the one that the singlet actually is. And then the singlet got made on the wrong blink.
Starting point is 00:17:03 It was a very wrong blank. It ran about two sizes too small while also being probably, I don't know, eight inches longer in the legs than the other one was. It was all off. And so then that delayed that out another, what, month or two after it already felt like it had been delayed a month or two. So that one was a huge pain.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Actually, anything outside of a t-shirt sort of can be a pain because you're just dealing with stuff that has... I mean, a t-shirt's somewhat easy. T-shirts are always the easiest, right? The only variable of t-shirts is how is this blank going to hold up? Is the blank going to be consistent? Because apparently that's not for sure in this day and age. It's not a gamey.
Starting point is 00:17:46 But yeah, otherwise, blanks, I mean, we know we're going to put a design. It's going to be on because apparently that's not a for sure in this day and age but yeah otherwise blake i mean we know we're going to put a design it's going to be on a t-shirt it's going to be roughly the same size we set it to be it's going to be roughly the correct colors we told to be there's not a lot of surprises there but you start getting into embroidery and patches and just different pieces of apparel and merchandise and there's a lot more ways things could be interpreted. And sometimes you do get samples. Sometimes you don't get samples. Sometimes the sample you get is not the product you get in the end.
Starting point is 00:18:15 So there's just a lot of ways that communication can break down. I mean, luckily, I'm not trying to sound negative. Luckily, things go the way we expect them. Things go the way we are hoping them to go 90 plus percent of the time, probably 95 plus percent of the time. But every once in a while, there's just something that's a little more work than what it seems to be worth.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Yeah, some of the more challenging ones are probably ones that you don't know about because they still have yet to exist. Yeah, that's very true. We're like, well, nope, the still isn't working. We're just not make fricking making it.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Even though we know if we could just get it right, we would sell through it. Awesome. But, or there has been some things that we thought we had a good idea. And then by the time we figured out what the numbers would be, we'd realize how much we'd have to charge for that product. And we're like,
Starting point is 00:19:01 we're just not even selling it. Yeah. We don't just the number of people that would have to buy it to to even make that worth it at a price that seems way too high to us in the first place yeah so there are things that we do abandon once we get once we start crunching the numbers okay next one is from big chris daminger would you be open to a collab with tango charlie if they have her answer i think we know the answer to that one that one's a resounding no if they needed someone to collab they're going out of business signs i think we could collab
Starting point is 00:19:36 with that one on them if tango charlie was i wish i knew the saying here but you it's like if someone was something something i would throw him a rope to hang himself with or you know like you can imagine what the saying is there do you know kind of like a saying i think of the one from the office with michael scott when he says what does he say what's he say if toby and or what's he talking about if someone was in the room i would line them all up i can't even remember what michael says now but it's something really you can all imagine the kind of things we wouldn't or would do to tango charlie yeah if tango charlie was on fire i wouldn't spit on him or you know i wouldn't
Starting point is 00:20:18 spit on him to help him let it burn baby yeah uh big ashley says what question do you really want to answer but no one ever asked who I don't know if I have one of those I don't think I have any hidden motives yeah I mean that is kind of I really wish I can pick up questions in here I really wish there was a lot more what other things do I try to talk about
Starting point is 00:20:45 that people don't want to hear about yeah i don't know sort of the beauty of the podcast we can talk about whatever we want so we're not limited to this question format yeah it's not the game the show isn't just uh overrated underrated and we're like damn it tanner did four four topics and none of those topics are ones i want to talk about. Oh, maybe next week. Right. Yeah, so you got nothing. I guess if someone had to ask a question, I'd say someone should ask another really good question that I think Kevin had the one time, the best gauge of strength. Because a lot of good content came of that one question.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Yeah, more questions like that that we can just ride into the sunset. I guess if I had a question, just more really more questions like that that we can just ride into the sunset. I guess if my head had a question, just more really good questions, that'd be more of a request. We get a lot of silly ones. Let's also make sure we're getting some really good ones too. Some really good ones. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Big Nate said, Will I'm Just Crew be on repeat at the Masonomics booth? We don't play music at the Masononomics booth we typically leave that up to huck finn yes we do just across the aisle from us he'll be playing music loudly i would not want to be blasting music from our booth it gets to be i can't talk as it is no i i and i get a headache as it is like that wouldn't help me but if if we did, I guess it would have to be. That'd be a good song to have a feature on the playlist. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Yeah. Big Patrick says, what's the hardest business decision you've had to make? And what's the softest? See what he did there. Little opposites. The hardest business decision i don't know if we've ever had any really hard decisions that we didn't because to me a hard decision seems that could be you don't know if you're making the right decision or not um the hardest if in that context that's actually a good way to put it
Starting point is 00:22:48 because we've had to do some hard-ish things. Uncomfortable or... Yeah, but it was always the right decision. Yeah. So it wasn't really a hard decision, but we've had to do some difficult things, but the decision was easy. It was just like the execution.
Starting point is 00:23:03 It was just the execution. It was unpleasant or just yeah but i don't know it's when i think about what you said though what's the hard decision because you're not sure what's the right thing well the hardest decision is probably sometimes the way we handle stuff um that is debatable whether or not we we could or should or should be selling it anymore that's probably the hardest decisions that we face uh that's been the most talked about debated thing is where some things sit from a legal standpoint right and uh because there is a lot of gray area but we usually take the better
Starting point is 00:23:38 safe than sorry approach which is probably still the right decision but like that's the that's a hard decision that we have to make i mean because we leave money on the table by doing that that is the longest running question we always have about anything is just uh right yeah what what is the the right way to go with some of these things and is there anything besides that's more my mind goes to on that hard question but i don't know if you had anything no No, that's what I would have said to, to, to make an actual answer to what is a hard decision to make. Yeah. But everything else is, it's kind of just,
Starting point is 00:24:11 we can do what we want. So it's not, the rest are pretty soft. We haven't been presented with a lot of opportunities like sell the company or do, or keep running the car decisions like that haven't came our way. So we haven't had a lot of acquisition offers, which to me would be a hard decision. If the money was enough, that could be hard.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Actually, if the money is enough, that's also not a hard decision. Well, true. Yes, yes. If the money is in a weird area where we really have to think about it. That's a hard decision. Yeah. But otherwise, you just sell it and make just Masanomics version 2. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:44 We got plenty of made-up names we can come up with for made-up companies. Big Dave asks, is Aberdeen going to be ready for Lift Hard, Live Easy Classic 2? I don't think they will be. The city's not going to know what hit it. It's going to be the old wham, bam, thank you, ma'am. it's going to be the old wham bam. Thank you, ma'am.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Is that what it is? He said, there's a lot of questions about lift, hard, live, easy classic here. And he says lift, hard, L H L E one,
Starting point is 00:25:15 two, you know, like, I mean, he just said, I, I, yeah,
Starting point is 00:25:19 he said, I, I, and some people say lift, lift, harder, live easier, or, uh, uh people say lift harder, live easier. Or lift hard, live easy classic too could be a thing, you know?
Starting point is 00:25:31 Yep. Well, if only someone got to, if only there were some people that were in charge of making that decision. You could say that could be a hard decision. That's pretty much your decision. Oh, damn it. I don't put my brain in lift-hard-live-easy mode until after the Arnold.
Starting point is 00:25:49 After the Arnold. I haven't gone there yet. Here's the question. Sock, sock, shoe, shoe? Or sock, shoe, sock, shoe? I think we know the answer to that. Does anyone put on sock, shoe, sock sock shoe sock shoe i think we know the answer that it is i don't does anyone put on sock shoe sock shoe i don't believe that anybody does that well that's a weird thing to me because so i don't even put those on at the same place no that was gonna be my argument is do you go get
Starting point is 00:26:17 okay i guess some people keep their socks in their bedroom but are sorry their shoes in their bedroom but i yeah i don't put those on i put my socks out of my bedroom go about my business then when i'm ready to go out my shoes are at the door and then those go on so i think that would be a known and even even in situations where i'm putting those on you do the socks you get the socks done and then you move on to the shoes you're not mixing and matching here right like a crazy person with a shoe on and no the other one's barefooted what's going on that would be crazy person big keith honeycutt says how much fun are you going to have at home gym con well we don't know that yet tbd
Starting point is 00:26:58 yeah maybe uh by the time actually arnold's over we probably have a better answer for that. I'm guessing we'll probably know by the time we leave the Arnold if we're going to be going there or not. Maybe. Be nice to know. We've got to know eventually because it's not that far away. Someone's got to know. Actually, we don't have to know.
Starting point is 00:27:19 We would just never go if we never found out. That's true. I guess indecision could be the decision. It would be. Big Keith also asked what do you want to see this year from unpaid and underrated oh boy it's more of the same i think right yeah i'd say uh keep keep keep refining that yeah keep i want to see you not go a week without an episode again that would be the big one you can't break the streak. Yep.
Starting point is 00:27:45 That would be severe disappointment. New episode every single week. That's what I want to see. The rest of it, that's their own secret sauce. I don't tell them how to bake their cake. Exactly. Exactly. Any more references I could use there?
Starting point is 00:28:06 I'm not going to tell you how to get your hair caught in a crawler. Big Tommy Schneider. Tommy Schneider is a stapler. He's in the Minnesota Lifter Department of Safety. That's a movie. Tommy Schneider will be played by Rob Schneider. Rob Schneider is a spotter and loader in the Minnesota Department of Safety. Rob Schneider is Tommy Schneider.
Starting point is 00:28:47 He's just the exact same guy they just change his first name nothing else changes oh god that's so stupid. Yeah. That's really funny. Oh, it's so dumb. It's making me not be able to breathe. It's making me laugh so hard.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Stop laughing because you're like convulsing. Rob Schneider is Tommy. I don't know why. That's just like years of stupid mess. I'm just jokes like, like, like perfectly. All these stupid repeat jokes. All I need is one. it all led up to this moment
Starting point is 00:29:47 to this perfect idiotic joke that almost nobody even gets no one else thinks that's funny but it's just so stupid oh god what did he even say really raised my body temperature there yeah i don't even need to know the question. That's all I need to know. I'll never see Tommy Schneider and not have to talk about that now. Any chance of some squats shorts to go along with the bench heavy and deadlifter shorts? I'd say there's absolutely a chance of that. It goes back to our previous thing.
Starting point is 00:30:21 We were talking about shorts that kind of there's a lynch pin that needs to be lynched and pinned before we move on to the next steps. It's our triple B plan, build better blanks. Back better blanks, baby. Should we want to hear about supporting our supporting members? Yes. I really want to hear what's happened with them in the past week. It's been a while since we talked about them but uh this week i just wanted to support everyone that we got to meet at the arnold all the people all the supporting members that we got to shake hands
Starting point is 00:30:55 with uh talk stories talk about how they you know came across massonomics you know what they're into whether they listen to the podcast or you know they buy the merchandise or they follow along on instagram all the people we got to meet for the first time and all the old friends all the old sporting members that we got to you know revisit with after it being a while since we got to see them so i think that's the biggest thing to me yeah easily the best part of the arnold just getting to hang out hang out and catch up with everyone yeah it's always a ton of fun it's it's always just this game of a roulette you know you never know what who's gonna just pop up in front of you and what's gonna happen and it's it's constant so and then of course we also do have to appreciate all the people that did help at the booth because that has been a major part of keeping the the arnold rolling for us
Starting point is 00:31:46 these last few years oh the crew the crew has become a big part of the arnold for us the actual logistics of the arnold oh absolutely yeah that's uh like it'd actually be a being able to be a functioning thing for us and then also just like it's just also part of what we do at the arnold be weird if we went there and didn't have like all these people that are like it was back in 2019 when we didn't really know anyone at all yeah i mean just everyone coming up is like oh yeah i maybe saw you guys on instagram before yeah that's us besides scott nods no one in the entire building know who we were so thank you to our supporting members you can also become a supporting member if you're interested.
Starting point is 00:32:27 Just go to massanomics.com slash join. That's where you'll see our various options, all of them affordable, all of them amazing options. Starting point is 00:33:23 please go check it out. My personal favorite is the 80-20 protein powder. I buy it on the chocolate flavor, and I have it every single morning as a part of my breakfast. On your eggs? On my eggs. It's just a nice, delicious, chocolatey egg powder coating on top of my eggs. What if you mixed it in with the scrambled eggs before you fried them?
Starting point is 00:33:48 That sounds really, really gross. It sounds like a really good way to ruin chocolate protein. That wouldn't be my recommendation, but I would recommend trying it in a different, more normal way for protein powder. Also check out their Vasoblitz. It's the nitric oxide support supplement that they have that you can take as a pre-workout. And then also their fully loaded Full Blitz pre-workout that's got the caffeine dosage in it. And then they've got their Drink Hack, which is basically a hangover support supplement.

Starting point is 00:35:43 Big Andrew Baker says, here's a good one drink spotter og or light boy so i think there are levels of this question because i if you have like a two by three rack i think the light's probably a better choice for you you're just going to get a better fit yeah so in that case that'd be an easier way to recommend that this is like a we could make a little the branch tree you know where you have all the different paths you go down are you on a tight budget go to drink spotter light the other branch do you want the strongest most durable drink holder available? See Drink Spotter OG. No budget limitations? I'd actually put that one as get both if there's no budget limitations there.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. So there's a lot of ways to do it. Just like everything in life, I don't think there's one right answer other than you got to buy at least one of them. Right. I mean, I agree. You got to buy both. You just never should buy both.
Starting point is 00:36:44 And when I say buy one of them i mean buy both a lot of times we get orders like that where they're buying where people buy both together a lot of times we get orders where people buy two of one of them and one of the other ones yeah the light from an affordability standpoint you should have multiple of those i would say is if you own a home gym i would just have multiple of the lights at the price that they were able to sell those at and like the universal nature of them and how they can just go on everything in the gym one for your beverage one for your phone one for your chicken bake it's yeah you might as well have three or four of them did you pay attention at all last time you were in mass time x gym how many are in there like it's multiplying yeah i like to make sure they
Starting point is 00:37:25 multiply yeah it's a it's a it's a beautiful thing to see it's a good i've found it a good home for any cosmetic uh imperfections there you go yes yeah all right big mad cow says don't lie tanner have you fed the baby a blended up bake and formula shake to max out those macros no we haven't done that we don't you know it's hard to get fresh chicken bakes and it's not just down the road it's a little right right and only the freshest for my baby so no we haven't haven't done any chicken bake shakes for them yet but that's maybe build fast should come out with a chicken bake flavor protein powder could be onto something there caesar dressing yeah the best the finest
Starting point is 00:38:19 caesar chicken and ranch and bread flavoring that they could fit into a powder yes big chris d fmk elite fts i said i only read these if i think that they're good and i'm gonna read this one so it passes muster all right for that's what been my official policy is fmk only gets read on q a It's right on Q&A if it's worthy. So FMK, Elite FTS bathrooms, the Arnold bathrooms, or the Aberdeen YMCA bathrooms? Oh, well, the easy one is you kill the Arnold bathrooms, right? That's not even a question there. Yeah, you killed Arnold bathrooms. I think actually the whole thing is easy.
Starting point is 00:39:01 It probably all fits into place here. Yeah, I think you marry the Elite FTS bathrooms. Right. They were that top notch. The best gym bathrooms I've ever been to. And actually, even by most standards, you could say that the Aberdeen YMCA bathrooms were totally acceptable, right?
Starting point is 00:39:19 Yeah. I don't remember going to there a whole lot. There's one stall in that. I'm thinking of the upstairs one. Yeah, that's the only one I ever went in, but I can't even really think of there a whole lot, but. There's one stall in that. I'm thinking of the upstairs one. Yeah, that's the only one I ever went in, but I can't even really think of what they were like, honestly. Yeah. I mean, they weren't, like, dirty or anything.
Starting point is 00:39:32 No, no, they just weren't memorable. I think they're getting, he's getting at the toilet paper. They had great toilet paper there. They did, though. Yeah. Of course. Great toilet paper at the Everdeen YMCA. Yeah, but that's the answer, the answer i think definitively okay next one from big joe when can we expect to see the lift shorts 2.0
Starting point is 00:39:58 make a return oh this comes up like every q a it does. It's probably a tough one to make return. It's in a gray area. Yeah. And if you're asking when we make something on that, like what about on that blank? If the question is like, oh, we just really like that blank. Some people do say that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:22 But there's also a lot of people that said, I do not like that blank. It's way too hot polarizing blank yeah and that that does make it a challenge challenging item to sell because yeah people do have strong opinions on that one yeah big moto says over under on questions related to tango charlie well we're only a few a couple of those so far do we have two even or has it just been yeah maybe that's like two if you count it. Really, there's not that many questions.
Starting point is 00:40:48 So I think we're going to get like three. Yeah, I was going to say the line was going to be three and a half there. Yeah, but fuck Tango Charlie. That's still my answer to anything related to them. Say that enough, they'll come out with a shirt that says that probably. That's just as long as nobody buys that i'm all right all right with it okay here's the good question i think this is an interesting question from big park 51 what is more impressive a five i'm going to actually start this over just in case i want to use this this may this could be a good clip spit it out smooth yeah what is more impressive a 500 pound bench press or an 800 pound deadlift oh that
Starting point is 00:41:36 that's a good question i thought did i say that in an okay way or is that would that be weird if i pulled that now you're back why is he saying it like that? No, he said it with conviction. That's fine. Okay. 500-pound deadlift or an 800-pound, or sorry, 500-pound bench or an 800-pound deadlift? Hmm, boy. I've got an opinion.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Yeah, you probably do. Okay, just, I think I'd probably lean towards, I think I'd probably lean towards... I'm actually really torn on this. Part of me wants to lean towards an 8-pound deadlift. Those were good numbers. Because if you said 705, I think I'd say bench all day. Just in our own experience, we've seen several people hit 700 pounds on the deadlift.
Starting point is 00:42:25 We've seen very few people, like no one hit 500 basically just like in massomics gym right and but 800 pound deadlift is big and if you're having this conversation even a few years ago eight and who's hitting 800 deadlifts no one right but the only reason i pause there is because so many people have started hitting 800 pound deadlifts but i still think i think you well i mean you I mean, you could have an answer to this question. Look at open powerlifting, how many people have done one of each. In my mind, I'm going to guess that an 800-pound deadlift is still more rare than a 500-pound bench. Do you think or not? That's kind of where I go on it.
Starting point is 00:43:02 That's kind of what I think. I think so. And I have, like, my own bias on it because I think I got pretty close to a 500-pound bench. There's a few guys in the gym that have cracked that 450 mark. Right. There's been one 500-pound bencher. Yeah, we had one. Yeah, but 800-pound deadlift, youlift you know like there's been a bunch of
Starting point is 00:43:27 us that have broken like 700 pounds but to go from seven to eight that is a really big jump it is that's what i think 800 i would say an 800 pound deadlift is more impressive than the 500 pound bench generally speaking but not by a wide margin. I think those are good comparison numbers. They are. Okay. Can I, can I,
Starting point is 00:43:51 so what's the squat number? I was going to say, so if I even just 700 pounds, even if we said the same thing, what would you consider more impressive at 800 pound squat or an 800 pound deadlift? An 800 pound squat. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:04 I think an 800 pound squat is, and I'm, that's, but a lot of times when guys are in the, that territory though, like those numbers are just kind of equal already. So once you start getting up there, it's,
Starting point is 00:44:15 well, what if you say, cause those are really high numbers. So what if it's a 700 pound squat and a 700 pound deadlift or six and six, six, I think the squat is out to me the squat is always like by default the more impressive it is just like if you go five and five it's the squat for sure yeah yeah once you start getting that 800 range things kind of don't make sense because you're talking about some of i mean you're talking about a handful of people in the world
Starting point is 00:44:38 right uh but when you start when you're in the six and seven ranges those are numbers that are attainable and the number of guys that you see hit, that's not that crazy to see someone hit a 600-pound deadlift. It's just not. But a 600-pound squat is kind of crazy. You go to a local meet, you're going to see guys pulling 600 pounds in probably any local meet you go to. You're not going to see very many people squat 600 pounds if i guess the thing to me is the nature of the deadlift you'll see here's what i say you'll see little people you'll see small people deadlifting large amounts of weights you almost don't ever see a relatively small i'm
Starting point is 00:45:18 using you know i use that term but you'll you'll see 180 pound people pull over 600 pounds. That's not unheard of by any means. It's much more rare to see them squat that number. And not just them, anyone. Yeah, and that's why I think it's more impressive, like the equivalent numbers. And some people are going to be like a squat specialist. Some people can squat more. They can deadlift.
Starting point is 00:45:43 But I think still the rule of thumb is that the squat... So to them, hitting that same number on deadlift is actually more impressive for them, for that individual person. But I still think the rule of thumb is the squat is more impressive because it feels rarer. I agree. And this sort of goes back to our conversation
Starting point is 00:45:57 of what's the best gauge of strength. We're using some of these same arguments that we had for that one. Just did turn into the same question. In a way it did, yes. But it's a different way. It's an interesting different way to look at it. All right, here's one though.
Starting point is 00:46:14 So I, okay, this is the numbers, you know, a number a lot of people, I don't know, actually, is this even the number? People will say, you know are actually i'm probably just making up things in my head i don't know if anyone says the surface is just me i'm thinking of a 315 bench a 405 squat and a 495 deadlift three four and five plates yeah on all those lifts yeah uh if you're of a certain level of strength i think all those ones are are very doable and attainable and there's a good chance that you're you a certain level of strength, I think all those ones are, are very doable and attainable. And there's a good chance that you're, you could realistically be hitting all of those at a very similar time in
Starting point is 00:46:48 your training. And of those three, is there one that sticks out to you that list has been more impressive or is it now that's still maybe depending on who you are, like intermediate enough that it's not that. See of those three, I think they're pretty good numbers that scale with i think those are all scaled pretty well
Starting point is 00:47:11 but at those numbers i almost lean towards the squat being the 405 squat being the least impressive and i don't know why i sort of do there too. Like that's should be almost that needs that number probably to scale appropriately needs to be like four 40 or even four 65. Right. And I sort of like in that equation, I might depending on the person, I might say the bench is the most impressive. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:40 In that line, a three plate bench. Yeah. Cause that one, that one, there's a good chance that that one could have taken the longest to get to. Because of what we've seen happen with the deadlift, that one starts to impress. Like if we say, the question is what impresses you? The deadlift numbers impress me less and less because I feel like you see it all the time.
Starting point is 00:48:03 So I'm like, I'm not impressed by it. It's a stupid word. Stupid numbers. It's not impressive. It's like, it's not impressive because I feel like you see it. Like, it's just like, I don't know. I just saw someone 185 do like that for seven reps. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:48:19 I'm not impressed by that. But is it impressive? Like, of course it still is i just it just i don't know the deadlift is uh the deadlift becomes a weird one in that group to me it does it it it is the easiest one to maximize to your but if the question is the 315 bench the 405 squat the 495 deadlift which is the most impressive out of those three for that lifter i'm taking away the squat because that number needs to be higher i think and then i would yeah it goes back to my logic on the deadlift then when
Starting point is 00:48:57 i really start to compare that the bench is more impressive because i just think of what the person did to get possibly did to get to either of those numbers. Uh-huh. And I lean towards the bench. I agree. Okay. Sufficiently answered. Now that we have all those strength standards figured out.
Starting point is 00:49:17 Yes. Now that everyone has agreed with the roadmap we laid out for everyone that they must all follow. Big Park says, says okay here you go this is fun what are y'all's dream vehicles what's your dream vehicle tommy well so the question if this is price is no object dream vehicle that's the first thing i was gonna say because like dream vehicle as in just i have a billion dollars and i don't care what it costs and i don't care what maintenance is or anything, or like realistically, you would actually want to get something that could be on my list.
Starting point is 00:49:49 I've said before in the realistically attainable thing, I, I still would love to have a C5 Corvette someday. I love the way they look sweet. They're super affordable as far as a fun car goes. You know, you can find a Chevy made 10 billion of them between whatever year what 97 in 2003 or whatever it is uh you can find uh the the hatchback style ones the liftback
Starting point is 00:50:15 style ones for like i don't know 17 to 20 depending on how many miles you're willing to tolerate and because it's a chevy vehicle you know parts are attainable and every person in the world can fix those damn things so there's no weird service thing so that one uh is high on my list for if i get a fun car someday that would be up there um and then i would like that choice i would i would like to have a porsche of some kind like a 911 or a or a that choice i would i would like to have a porsche of some kind like a 911 or a or a yeah would that be your dream dream one then or would that that's no because if i'm going dream dream though that still is kind of an understated car at the end of the day uh right i don't know if i'm going dream dream i'd probably i'd probably go lamborghini if i'm going dream dream uh
Starting point is 00:51:02 ferraris and stuff like that are cool but uh right i don't know something about lamborghini if i'm going dream dream uh ferraris and stuff like that are cool but uh right i don't know something about lamborghini seems like what's the new lamborghini model like what does lamborghini make right now they're well they're in the process of is it in the well it's the roboelto is the one that's coming out okay i don't even know that name yeah what's the other what would been more recent or like the event or event yeah that one i know yeah um like nick at live large he has the mercy lago and a lot of people they say that's that was peak lamborghini that was the yeah that was the the the one before things started getting you know super electronic and all that right i've never been in any of these cars and i've driven any
Starting point is 00:51:42 cars like that so i'm sure any of them would just be the the sweet thing i've never been in any of these cars and have driven any cars like that. So I'm sure any of them would just be the wildest thing I've ever experienced in my life. But as far as just like crazy sports cars go, those would be up there high on my list. Yeah, those would be cool ones. What about you? Oh, well, recently as I've changed, I don't know if I would have even had a good answer to this. But my wife and i have talked like after having her 69 c10 chevy it's like well what is like at some point in time we could afford to get another you know i mean we're not going to do it a 69 blazer well no actually no i mean
Starting point is 00:52:17 it's basically the same thing but what i would want to get um this would be a very distant off the thing actually first of all i'd say the picket we have i just really like and i'm actually like really i'm like i almost feel like we have the thing that i like i'm just like i just love this thing and i wouldn't even want it like any nicer than it is because we like really enjoy driving it around and like and with a vehicle like that it's so far out of you know it's not going to really depreciate anymore at this point it's just it is what it is you could maybe say i don't know maybe depreciates at some point even too but so it's not like you ever like to worry about appreciate than depreciate yes so you don't
Starting point is 00:52:53 have to ever have to worry but i got to get out of it because okay now it's 20 years old and now people don't care or oh now it's hit whatever number of miles and like that that's out of the equation so you just kind of is what it is which is somewhat rare in in the vehicle world yeah yeah um so i would go with uh if you know price being not really an object what i want is uh sort of matching it's not really matching but uh 69 chevelle uh ss which um because mary we well, if we got a car, what car do we want to get in a Camaro as a common one? But to me, the, the Chevelle it's Melba toast from a dazed and confused. He's got a, he's got the SS, uh, Chevelle. And, um, I would like a, so my dream one, I guess, would be like a fully restored big block 69 Chevelle that's just like immaculate.
Starting point is 00:53:51 That's just ridiculous. But I would also buy it to drive it too. Anything I got, I would have the intention of like, no, I'm using this. I would never want to buy anything to be like, no. Just to look at it or to protect it and drive it. That would not be fun um i am i i don't pay a ton of attention to like 70s cars and older than that but of that era the chevelle would probably be at the top of my list uh versus anything mustang wise or anything that right that dodge and there's cool mustang there are but i always thought the
Starting point is 00:54:24 chevelle was was probably it's cooler than the camaro i think the chevelle was i think so too i mean the camaros are cool too and like i know there's a lot of people that like mopar stuff but i don't know if that turns my crank quite as much yeah that was never and it's that's probably one with me where my dad was he to him the car was always the chevelle like that was the one so that's probably one that rubs off on me from that. Right. And a lot of people like it. That's why they're so, and that's why it comes to my mind, because they're just, they are expensive.
Starting point is 00:54:52 Nice ones are, like, very expensive, because it's very commonly considered, you know, goat, you know, in there. So, well, not technically, but yeah. It's highly desirable from that era. Right, right. Will Dan Bell make a comeback? I mean, it looks like he's getting ready to lift now. He's lifting heavy as it is. He's got a meet, right?
Starting point is 00:55:21 Okay, is he doing a meet for sure then? Yeah, isn't he doing some kind of head-to-head thing against uh yeah another guy i didn't even recognize the other guy's name or maybe i'm just not remembering off the top of my head maybe that's why but yeah i thought he had a head-to-head meet coming up with some sort i mean it looks like he's crazy strong yeah i would never i i would never uh count dan out no matter what he says, because sometimes you might say that he's not going to do it anymore. I think the allure pulls him back in. Will Hafthor be a contender for winning World's Strongest Man again?
Starting point is 00:55:56 Sounds like no. Actually, one of our questions from our preview show is defunct because he said he won't compete at World's Strongest Man. I was not aware. I saw that in the Discord. I can't remember who World's Strongest Man. I was not aware. I saw that in the Discord. I can't remember who put that in there, but I was not aware of that. I believe, were they saying whoever put that in there that, yeah, Hafthor said he's not going to do World's Strongest Man
Starting point is 00:56:15 after how everything shook out with Eddie and all that? Was that? Yeah. Yeah, I think that that's a big, and I think he'd, whatever, the promoters, he doesn't get along with them because of it and all that. So we won't see him there. So I guess the easy answer to that is no. Otherwise I would say if he would be competing,
Starting point is 00:56:32 I would say absolutely. He could be, uh, if you're asking, could it be a contender? I'd say like, yeah, like right away.
Starting point is 00:56:38 It looks, he's deadlifting over. He's deadlifting a thousand pounds already. That guy's strength just comes back so fast. And I know the deadlift isn't the only event, but we also know that this guy was not a one trick pony before. So it tells me if his deadlift is getting there, you know,
Starting point is 00:56:56 like can you deadlift a thousand pounds back? Well, he can deadlift a thousand, but he's not actually that strong. You can say that about potentially people that deadlift five or six hundred pounds but right yeah you get to a thousand pounds you can't deliver a thousand pounds big matt says and he says will either of you try equip squatting so your hips don't hurt hashtag crew wolf pack my take on that is i don't have that much interest in it. Uh, so I guess never say never,
Starting point is 00:57:27 I would caveat almost every question with that. So you never know, but I have really still no interest ever. I couldn't see myself competing and equipped powerlifting cause I'm not interested in it. So then I don't really see the utility in training my squat that way. And, you know, I would, I would tend to not squat or squat much less frequently or, you know, adjust my squat more than I would. I just, it's a different, you know, people will say it's, oh, it's a different sport almost. And I kind of feel like that way. And I just don't have interest in that side of it. So I don't really have interest in doing it. I can see how it would be really fun. I enjoy the tech.
Starting point is 00:58:12 I mean, I enjoy sports and everything where there's a high level of technical expertise required. So I think that would make lifting really interesting again, you know, from that aspect of being almost a newbie when it comes to the technical aspect of it. But with that being said, I am incredibly limited on time. I don't have anyone to help me. I train basically alone, you know, in the way that no one that knows what's going on is around me, really. So I just I'm not in an environment that's conducive to doing equipped lifting. So for those reasons, it would not be a good fit for me at this time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:49 Thought I had another point on that, but I'm not, and also I would just say I'm not knocking it like anyone that does it. I know I'm for real. I think personal. I can, I can totally see how it'd be a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:58:58 I totally do. It's a new challenge. It's a, it is a, it's a different thing. I can see how it'd be a lot of fun to do. Here's my other thing. i can see how it'd be a lot of fun to do here's my other thing the way my hips hurt i i guess i would have to put my money with where my mouth is to say this definitively i do not think equipped squatting oh would help would
Starting point is 00:59:17 not hurt my hips oh oh okay i i think it my hips would still hurt yeah is what i'm saying like i don't think that that would solve my problem. I don't think throwing more weight on but having like supporting gear would not hurt my hips. And maybe that's a bold statement that someone that wears that stuff would say, no, I think you're wrong. But that would be my hypothesis. I could see that.
Starting point is 00:59:43 And mine, now that I've done even more, now that it's been, what, almost two months and my hip still hurts and I'm realizing, yeah, this isn't going away, and I'm finally starting to acknowledge it and look into it more, I'm actually starting to think maybe it's some type of labrum thing
Starting point is 00:59:55 from what I've looked at online. And yeah, I don't know. I don't know if a squat suit helps that or not. Right. Walfiron Iron Gym, did Big Eddie win sudden death dodgeball to be able to bring Tanner his 80-pound New York Roundheads? Yeah, so in the meet-up there, Eddie was picking up some 80-pound dumbbells
Starting point is 01:00:21 that Walfiron's been the caretaker of for me for several months. So shout out to both those guys for facilitating that transaction, and we'll see Eddie in Ohio and be able to grab those from him. Hopefully Highway Patrol doesn't find out he's smuggling York roundheads. They'll have something to say to him about that. He also said, is Scantz really the twins? Because did you see they had the cardboard cutout Scantz together? This is from Big Mike.
Starting point is 01:00:53 Feelings on Big Grant's new podcast. Is Massonomics the mother podcast? I would start off by saying I am so thankful that finally a group of white guys came together to start a podcast. To share their life experiences. It's what we've all been missing, I think. You know, we are underrepresented on here. Yeah. So finally someone give all of us a little bit more of a voice uh-huh i i like the
Starting point is 01:01:28 okay i like the okay podcast and i'm glad that he started a podcast and i think it's going really well yeah so everyone can check that out if they haven't it's the okay podcast yeah grant's always got a lot to say and uh this gives him another another channel channel to get more information and lots more fun talks out there. And one of his co-hosts, Big Jeff, is a supporting member of Mastonomics. And the producer, Big Jordy, is a supporting member of Mastonomics. Take from that what you will. I will name nobody else from there because they are not supporting members.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Grant's kind of, you know, Grant's a supporting member too, so. In the sense that he gives us way more money through a sponsorship. I do like it though. I think it's good. And just finally, thank God, a group of white guys got together to just like chat about things going on in their life.
Starting point is 01:02:22 Lifting, sports, you know. Military sports. All the good stuff yeah okay big eddie says now that the canadian twins have surfaced who are your favorites blondes or scants oh wow scantz. Oh, wow. Well, I just like all twins. I don't think the song discriminates. Don't discriminate. Big Eddie
Starting point is 01:02:54 also says, which crew are you most excited to see at the Arnold? Well, we can't pick that, Eddie. Is he giving us choices? Maybe one of the crew is maybe he's citing a crew that's not actually crew members so no it wasn't choices he just it was very open-ended so i would um we that's the thing about the crew it's like the crew isn't it always an ambiguous
Starting point is 01:03:16 term that is everyone all at once so we're just excited to meet all of the crew at the Arnold, I think, right? I 100% agree. Big Hornsby says, choose only one personality trait to most accurately gauge someone's lifetime intermediateness. I see what he's doing there. That is good. One personality trait to gauge their lifetime intermediate. So is this a personality trait that's going to determine if someone's going to stay intermediate,
Starting point is 01:04:00 or is this, or am I thinking about this? Should I be thinking about this? No, that's kind of what I, that's how I would interpret that. So what is a personality trait that's going to keep someone intermediate for a long time? Yeah, that you can see this trait and then be able to gauge, yes, you are very much an intermediate.
Starting point is 01:04:19 Well, okay, are we thinking of intermediate as more of a derogatory sense here or it's more of like now we're all kind of intermediate because advanced yeah i think it's like advances like five six lacking the ability to make it to advance so i don't mean this is a knock but i'd probably say having a life with obligations is probably the biggest. I mean, the personality trait would maybe be having relationships outside of the gym. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not that it's impossible, but it makes it significant.
Starting point is 01:04:54 I mean, the people we know that are the best in the world, they're not even the best. Advanced. And in this case, when we say advanced, we mean people that are benching squatting and deadlifting the five six seven eight hundred pounds for the most part those people their life revolves around the gym this isn't a personality trait but this is just a thing that i think becomes more apparent to me also too is just like the most i mean this is i'm not saying anything revolutionary here but
Starting point is 01:05:27 i think people even underestimate how important genetics are of like your predisposition to how good you can be at i mean you can get actual advanced we're talking actual advanced here not not i know a guy that can squat and deadlift over 500 that's not advanced that's advanced is we're talking 600 plus pounds on multiple lifts yeah someone's ability to get there most for most people it is not the amount of work they put in isn't even the limiting factor it's just what your genetics predispose you to yeah it's like that's a big like what's what's the limiting the limiting factor for most people being a D1 football
Starting point is 01:06:08 player. It's your genetics. Yeah. It's like it's not you can play it all hard if you just play hard or discipline. But right to be at a D1 an elite D1 level.
Starting point is 01:06:18 You got to have the total package there. Yeah. Actually you don't have to have the total back. You can be a genetic freak and kind of screw around on the other spots. Right. up right so that's why i think it's just so much genetics action i think people like even like is a way bigger factor than steroids or any of that
Starting point is 01:06:37 it's just like your genetics first which is kind of frustrating because obviously none of us have any control over any of that but it is but we're also talking advanced here this is this is not you can't use the genetic excuse for no like if you're like oh i can only squat 300 pounds why i can't get to 400 pounds because i don't have the genetics no i think like anyone could work to get there honestly you start but yeah you're starting to think about why can't my squat be 700 pounds? You might be hitting a genetic limit. It might literally never be able, like no matter what you did or do, it might not be able to get there. Like I, that's the case for me.
Starting point is 01:07:15 I could say, I don't even think, if you gave me whatever, whoever you think is the best lifting coach and nutritionist and outside of like some advanced drugs, like I'm not going to be, I'm not going to squat 700 pounds. Well, and just in your case, and this might be your genetics,
Starting point is 01:07:32 the pain, the pain of your hips is a genetic condition. And that's just not right. Exactly. Well, that, especially with lifters as they are not 20, as they get,
Starting point is 01:07:42 get older and older, like the biggest thing that sets almost all of our training back is injury and, uh, uh, pain management. And it's like, that's a genetic component of like, yeah, I'm predisposed. My hips are going to have problems. Like that's just like a gen, you know, that's a genetic predisp, predisposition that I have. So there again, I think it's genetics still most important.
Starting point is 01:08:06 And it's not everything, but when we're talking about like these elite level, you know, of getting out of who's going to be past intermediate, I'm not even answering the question anymore. Because the question was, was it personality? Personality traits. So I just didn't, I didn't have a good answer for that. But yeah, I mean, you did have something noteworthy to say in that. But yeah, personality trait though.
Starting point is 01:08:28 Actually, what was the original? Personality trait for what? That would gauge someone's lifetime intermediateness. Yeah. Boy. I'm just going with what I said. I'm the only one that's real that didn't answer the question yeah i think whatever we said there is good enough yeah from uh one of the davids he said will tanner show up to lift hard
Starting point is 01:08:53 live easy as a jacked 220 i think those two trends continue yeah trends continue to show up as a jacked 198 if i get to 220 nobody's going to be looking at me and say wow that guy's jacked they're gonna say say well that guy is in trouble you're gonna say wow how thin someone what a thin man what a thin thin frail man which they're good it's funny because you wouldn't think like to average beings, if you say someone weighs 220, that's... When I weigh 220, I feel pretty large. Right. I'm about 210 now.
Starting point is 01:09:33 And, yeah, if I get to the 220 mark, I feel like I'm big. But if I weighed 220 and I walked into a room, if anyone that's, like, they'd be like like you look gaunt like what is your genetic condition right now yes yes yes be like well oh i'm sorry did you guys know he had cancer like what happened he must be in this getting therapy for it they're fighting him yeah next question from big brand i heard brian works for tango charlie oh god we need to talk with our hr department oh he was planted now you know starts to make a lot of sense doesn't it it's all coming together yeah okay let's go with big steve says cost Costco hot dog inside the chicken bake wrapped in a cheese pizza, delicious gains or abomination.
Starting point is 01:10:31 I just don't think you need to combine any of the Costco. You are allowed to eat them separately. You don't just cause you bought it from the same place. Doesn't mean they need to be consumed all collectively together. I know people do that stuff like, Oh, you got to try the, you cut the cheese off of the cheese pizza and put it on top of the hot dog and put that in the chicken
Starting point is 01:10:49 bag i'm like i would just have each of those things that's what i'm fine with each food being its own thing i doesn't i don't need everything to be this blended mixed together substance big josh says who could drink the most then deadlift over 600 plus pounds at Massanomics Gym? Well, Josh, when you were there, you could certainly be in the running for that. I feel like that's a self-serving question. Okay. I feel like Ryan, your brother Ryan,
Starting point is 01:11:19 could probably drink quite a bit. I would think he'd be right up there. Ryan also is kind of pukey, though, so you would have that not going in his favor. Okay. Those would be my top two contenders. They'd be frontrunners. Nobody else immediately jumps out to me.
Starting point is 01:11:34 You could have potentially put your name in the hat. You could have just sheer willpower that one at some point, maybe. I wouldn't feel good about drinking that much and doing it. But what if they said it's for just for a good cause, a good cause, like a million dollars is the cause. I think you could put up a fight. I would give it a try.
Starting point is 01:11:54 Yes. I don't feel like I can drink that much anymore is my biggest limitation. I know I can't drink that much. Yeah. I ain't as good as what I once was, but maybe I would be as good once as i ever was rest in peace toby keith big nick rolf how did you get uh how did i get my happy birthday on supporting our supporting members that is uh from your wife your wife you have to thank for that as a matter
Starting point is 01:12:20 of fact so let her know my wife and he, in an effort for three supporting members in a row, this is our 10-year wedding anniversary. So congratulations on the 10-year anniversary of your funeral. Beat the odds. Yeah. Okay, last question for this week. This is from big Lee.
Starting point is 01:12:50 What is your favorite non South Dakota Midwestern state? Ooh. Okay. It's kind of challenging. Cause I haven't spent extensive amount of time really in a lot of other Midwestern states. I'd almost have to default to Minnesota because because it's the only one i do think minnesota has a ton of really awesome things going for it i haven't spent any time in wisconsin i don't so i can't even comment there haven't spent uh the only time i've ever spent michigan was when
Starting point is 01:13:17 we went to dr mike's house so it was nice but i also was in michigan for a total of what uh 12 hours i don't know, 20 hours? Not very long. Ohio, that's still debatable if that's even in the Midwest. I'm not sure you can even count that. Indiana, other than staying there once or twice, coming to and from the Arnold, I don't really have any experience there.
Starting point is 01:13:40 Nebraska, I mean, let's be real. I know they're not going up on this list. North Dakota, come on. I mean, they're not going up on this list. North Dakota, come on. I know they're not going up on this list. Not North Dakota, Nebraska, no. Iowa could be in there. Yeah, Iowa, but again, I've never really spent any time in Iowa. You've been to Sioux City a little bit.
Starting point is 01:14:01 I think a lot of people would say, yeah, you still haven't really spent any time in Iowa. So, yeah, by default, I guess i'd have to say minnesota yeah you didn't you didn't mention illinois also but yeah i have been to chicago once but i just haven't spent enough time in these other midwestern states i think a lot of people from the midwest unless they have family live in other states would probably say the same thing about i haven't really spent a lot of people from the Midwest, unless they have family that live in other states, would probably say the same thing about, I haven't really spent a lot of time in these other Midwestern states. Right. I mean, my answer is probably the same as yours for the same reasons.
Starting point is 01:14:32 Although I have been to Wisconsin and, you know, I've been to Michigan three or four times. Oh, you have? I always enjoyed the parts of Michigan. Okay. I went there when I was in eighth grade for like a week too and i remember liking it then although i'm just gonna say minnesota for the same reasons minnesota is pretty good though they got uh they got a ton of lakes yeah they got a thousand they got ten thousand of them to be exact they got the sports teams
Starting point is 01:14:59 that i root for are all there uh they're not far from home bases so uh from hometowns i should say so yeah they got a lot going for them are you do you cheer for the minnesota wild i don't but my old roommates they did they cheered for the wild the twins the timberwolves the vikings and the golfers and that i took in an nsu wolves game with them this weekend. Did you? Yeah, well, they were there, and I went and sat by them. Ah. Yeah. What's the Wolves record right now, even? Not good.
Starting point is 01:15:33 Is it a losing record? Yeah, they lost two games. They lost two buzzer beaters this weekend. Ooh, that hurts. The Friday night game, this is actually noteworthy. Nobody gives a shit, but it was just quite the ending the other team we made a shot
Starting point is 01:15:49 the game was tied we made a shot with 1.5 seconds left to go up by 2 and I guess I said we the people make fun of this is the only sports team where I say we this is the us-ing and the other-ing yes yes this is the only sports team where I might catch myself I live the us us in in the other ring yes yes this is the only sports team where I might find my catch myself accidentally because I went to school there I go yeah I go to
Starting point is 01:16:11 all the games in person I play noon ball there you know week like this is the one that I have any legitimate legitimacy of saying we when you talk about sports team I think that's fine. I have no problem with it. So we went ahead by two points, second and a half left. The other team got the inbound the ball around half court. They had it about halfway in between half court and the three-point line. Falling out of bounce into those chairs over there. The guy threw it up at the buzzer like it barely gets out of his hands at the buzzer and he falls out of bounds into the chairs,
Starting point is 01:16:47 and it banks in at the buzzer to lose by one point. Wow. You could have heard a pin drop outside of the other team going crazy, and then it took the refs like 10 minutes of watching stuff. And this is an NBA game. You don't get to sit there and re-watch the replay the whole time yourself, so you're like, so's so they're checking. Was he out of bounds?
Starting point is 01:17:08 And was it in time? And both were in question. And they were. Yeah. Is is Moorhead actually number one or were they number one? They might be. I'm not sure. I don't remember now.
Starting point is 01:17:20 I just I just thought they were a little frustrated. The men's team is the worst that it's been in ever so do they have a winning record even do you know i don't think so wow i don't think so after this the women's team is really good though which is the first time in quite a while right yeah yeah i think the women's is the best that it's been in a while i think actually so well they've been had some good ones but they're good right now but that's probably enough of nsu uh wolves sporting updates i thought of this the other day do you remember okay you've been to a lot of wolves games a lot more than i have you know i went to a lot when they were going through those glory years yeah would you say top three wolves basketball moment of all time was the night that the guy
Starting point is 01:18:04 hit like those six threes in a row he hit nine threes total that night we didn't weren't you that didn't we go to the loggers it was i hate winter it was nuts it was insane the way he was just mason stark from arizona yes mason yes an insane shooter that guy could shoot the freaking lights out yeah he made nine threes that night total. And yes, that's my personal favorite moment of being at a game. That was because it got to the point where he was just walking across half court and everyone was saying, shoot it! And the guy's guarding him well past the goal.
Starting point is 01:18:36 He was shooting. He shot repeated logo threes. And they were going in. He was draining them. And people were literally, like, it was a tight game. And because of his little onslaught, we ended up winning by, like, 25 points in the matter of, like, two minutes.
Starting point is 01:18:50 Like, it was like, what just happened? I've never seen anything like that on any level. Didn't he go, like, 9 for 11 or 9 for 12 on threes that night? Yeah, yeah. It was the most, I've, like, never even on TV in a highlight have I seen, like, that rapid of a, like so on fire, like literally that is NBA jam on fire where you're just throwing the ball. It was make a three, go down.
Starting point is 01:19:13 The other team misses, come back, make the same guy, make a three team goes down, misses same guy comes back, makes a three. I think you do that. Like you do it four or five times in a row. Yeah. The entire crowd was just like, I've never been in a basketball crowd we're just everyone's just yelling shoot it like just to almost just to just tell the guy like you have nothing to lose here and then he'd throw it up and it'd go in it was it was awesome i've ran into him once or twice and i bring it up every time because it was like my favorite uh moment
Starting point is 01:19:42 of like especially live at a sporting event. It was like the coolest thing. My wife's cousin, she has family that lives in Arizona. They actually played basketball. Oh, yeah. They probably know who it is. They actually played basketball against him. Her one cousin played basketball against him when they were in high school.
Starting point is 01:19:58 And that's the other, just as somehow to bring it back to the podcast, it's a funny thing. I was talking about this with Mount Rossmore. He sat by me on Saturday night at the game for a little while and i was talking about levels then kind of like the genetics talk so we talk about these northern guys like so i talk about like my noon ball thing and there's some good like there's some former college players and stuff that come around and stuff but say one of these active northern players came up one of the ones that I'm like,
Starting point is 01:20:25 Oh, that guy's a hack. But if he came and played like with me, he would make me look like I've never even, I don't even know how to touch a bat. Like I don't even know what basketball is like. And he would be out there like doing moves that you're like, what the fuck is that?
Starting point is 01:20:40 Fucking Michael Jordan. Why are you so athletic right now? Yeah. But then you take the best player on the this division two team and put them you know in the mix with like uh kansas's team or any d1 schools right they're gonna be like there's another guy right now you know yeah minnesota yep right same thing and he doesn't right i mean he plays but not yeah and then then you take most of those guys you put them in the NBA, and you'd be like...
Starting point is 01:21:06 Well, first of all, most of those guys don't even have a dream of the NBA. Right. And then the ones that make it, what, 80% of them also go on to do nothing? Well, most of the people that make it in the NBA are the guys that you're like, oh, that guy sucks.
Starting point is 01:21:20 He just rides the bench. You know, and like these guys... But like, that's how good the different levels are. Most of the people in the NBA now are coming from a different country. They're not even. Right, right.
Starting point is 01:21:29 That's true too. But that's what's so crazy is it just, there's so many levels to it where it doesn't even. Yeah. Yeah. Any D1 basketball player,
Starting point is 01:21:38 by all means, you are an incredibly good basketball player, but then, yeah, when you start looking at the top tier, it's like, no, no,
Starting point is 01:21:44 you weren't even good enough to even get looked at here right and uh that basketball is the example there but usually the same example in football i'm sure baseball i don't know baseball but uh football just has a bigger talent pool so right it's maybe a little different where basketball there's just so few guys that even make a team in the first place. And if you ask me what the biggest factor is there, you compare it to a sport of strength like powerlifting, I said it's all, it's genetics is so important. I still think in basketball it's so genetics important. Your height.
Starting point is 01:22:18 How many guys are under 6'3 in the NBA? For every inch that you are taller, this is a statistic maybe made up, but I think accurate. For every inch you are taller, you're 50% more likely to make it to the NBA. Something like that.
Starting point is 01:22:37 Even if you're 6'1 instead of 6 foot, you're 50% more likely than 6 foot tall. If you're 6'2 instead of 6'1, you're 50%. In every inch, that's true. If you're 6' foot, you're 50% more likely than six foot tall. If you're six, two, instead of six, one, you're 50% like in every inch. That's, that's true. You're if you're six,
Starting point is 01:22:49 six, you're 50% more likely than the six, five guy to make it. I could see that. I could have sworn I was reading an article one time. I was talking about the statistics of all men that are over seven feet tall. And, you know,
Starting point is 01:23:01 once you're, once you hit seven feet, your likelihood of being an elite level basketball player, because it's so rare to be seven feet tall right so you know it's an unproportionately large pool of people that are in that group that go on to be good basketball players because that's already such a small group of people yeah if you're seven foot tall and you don't play basketball at all like i'm like how could someone not have forced you to do it at some point along the way like no no you're playing you're on the team you gave up a lot of opportunity to not to not play like we are forcing you to play basketball basically
Starting point is 01:23:37 like it doesn't matter how bad you are you're still like if you're seven foot tall it doesn't matter how bad you are you're still like a college basketball player somewhere well and you can say the same thing with football if you're six five and 300 pounds yeah and fast you know like and like yeah not in uh you're not just like a sloppy pile of crap you actually have some athletic talent speaking of athletic talent or not athletic talent or genetics you know one thing that is important besides genetics which i ranted about is your training contradictory to what i may have been saying earlier your training does matter and we were talking about elite level lifters but you've got to maximize those genetics right for most of us
Starting point is 01:24:22 that we we don't fall into those outliers. We're more in the middle of the bell curve. That's why it's a bell curve, because we mostly fall inside the middle of it.
