Welcome, listeners, to episode 157 of the Massanomics podcast, the lifting podcast about nothing,
aka the world's strongest podcast.
Tommy, how's it going?
Oh, I forgot to mention your two favorite hosts are here again, Tommy and Tanner.
Tommy, how's it going?
It's going great, and I'm glad because I don't want anyone to think that I'm not a host on
the show.
Yeah, and not one of their two favorites of the show.
Yes, they have to know I'm a favorite as well.
Yeah.
So what's new this week in the life of Tommy?
You know, this week's been a tough one, Tanner.
No, I mean it really hasn't.
It's a Wednesday night.
We both got to lift at the gym.
We saw each other just hours ago.
Yeah. Getting our swole on. Getting saw each other just hours ago. Yeah.
Getting our swole on.
Getting our swole on.
Snow was melting.
Really, things are going pretty good for the most part.
Yeah, if we're not careful, we'll get into May,
and the snow will be almost gone by May.
I mean, if we're not careful,
we're going to know what 60 degrees feels like pretty soon.
Yeah.
And that's been six months or more, you know?
Yeah.
I'm going to do something here. This is a little unorthodox.
Oh, boy.
Are we doing over under right now?
No, not bad.
Not bad unorthodox.
Like, that's.
That would be really scary.
Yeah, don't get crazy here.
But almost that crazy.
Episode 156, our three-year anniversary last episode,
did see the return of Mass massonomics first ever segment the what's in tanner sack yep today we do have uh i brought
two items whoa in my sack two loads two evenly shaped items in within my sack um and maybe we
can spread them out throughout the podcast so maybe at the beginning here we can uh do do one of those items right away
um so wow spoiler alert let me dig around in this thing a little bit yeah see uh get it going
what i've got here and video listeners are in for a real treat right now
he's digging ladies and gentlemen he's digging
kind of trying to decide what to do first
but I guess I'm going to go with the larger item in my sack
get that out and clear
just to make room for future things faster
so this
sack item is actually also in a box
it's a box within a sack
and there's
an abundance of items here in this box so i'm going to start uh
setting them out here what do we have so you get one of those one of these oh and one of these
and i'll take the same one of each of those wow can i uh can i start telling people what we got here? Yeah, you better. So we have a collection of items.
Some are in sacks.
Some are in bottles.
Some are in powdered bags.
Some look like drugs.
And this...
It's drugs.
You could say this sack segment is brought to us by our friends at Obsidian Ammonia Inhalants.
Yep.
And, wow, I can say right away their packaging game is on point.
Yes.
And just the whole branding game is on point, to be honest.
It's really good.
So, okay, we have in front of us, we have the Obsidian Ammonia Inhalant.
And I can tell you a little bit of a difference in some of these products that we've got here. I kind of
know my ammonia. We have Saiyan
Salts, for those of you that need a little
Dragon Ball Z influence in your life.
We have...
That's just the original
Obsidian Ammonia that you have there.
Oh, there's multiple of them. So we have the original bottle.
And then this is, I think, the maybe menthol
scented. Oh, right.
You know, because that is a problem I have a lot.
I just start smelling the ammonia for so long.
I want something with a little scent to it.
So they solved that problem for me.
And what's with the little white powdered bags?
We'll get to that here.
Okay.
These are repeat products.
I have doubles of some of what you already have there.
So run me through what we got here, Taylor.
Okay.
So first of all, this stuff came to us from Travis,
who owns the company there out of London, Ontario, not far from our –
Ah, Europe.
Yeah.
I hear it's nice there this time of year.
They're only about an hour drive from the most recent Massanomics athlete,
Kyle Hendricks, and that's kind of how we got in touch with them
or they got in touch with us.
Hey, you know what they say. That's not what you know.
That's how we started touching each other.
We'll put it that way.
That's right.
And this is Travis that owns the company.
So the parent company is, if you look on the packaging, Forest City Barbell.
That, I say, is the legal entity.
Obsidian Ammonia is their flagship product.
Gotcha.
So you can find either on Instagram.
You can look at Forest City Barbell or Obsidian Ammonia,
and either will be on there.
But they're located based out of Canada.
And I talked to Travis a little bit because we got this package,
and I was like, let's talk about what's in here.
Because there's a lot of different stuff here,
and I'm not familiar enough with ammonia to be able to understand what all we got going on and what all we're working with.
So this, if you're looking on camera, what you're looking at is this is what I would usually typically think about ammonia coming in.
Yeah.
One of these.
More like almost a pill bottle.
Yeah, yes, yes.
A little plastic pill bottle.
And this is their original formula.
The original recipe.
Yeah.
And let me see if it does say something on here that I thought was kind of funny.
There's a warning on the side that says,
smell from safe distance and always tighten cap after use.
Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of accidental ingestion, flush thoroughly with water. warning on the side that says smell from safe distance and always tighten cap after use avoid
contact with eyes and skin in case of accidental ingestion flush thoroughly with water keep away
from children and fuck boys do not eat call your mom i like that yeah that's good fuck boys
so this is a 100 dry formula oh it is whereas some other ones you know like if you've spilled a little bit
before it doesn't have liquid yeah this is a 100 dry oh i didn't know there was such ammonia formula
i believe uh uh these guys can correct me if i'm wrong but i believe this is kind of um
an original formula to them or maybe like they're the only ones that have quite this
this specific product their chemistry is so on point that they can do these things and so what perks of this one
advantages it will have a very long shelf life it'll last a very long time it being 100 dry
formula it will last like up to six months wow especially if you uh sniff it by just removing the cap a little bit and going
like that and closing it back up it can last a really really long time that way yeah that could
be big savings for certain people yes yes yeah like some people use it multiple times daily yeah
um i don't know if that's really all it's ever meant to be used and they i don't see the scale
on the packaging here but they have a a scale even like
this is like uh they put it at like a nine or a ten out of ten for intensity and then it's that
it's a graph basically over time showing you know how how how much it hangs in there so at the
beginning the peak of the this being a fresh bottle it's not hitting the the top of the charts
oh it takes a little time to age and refine?
No, no, no.
No, it continually goes down, but this is a little less severe.
Oh, gotcha, gotcha.
It's just a little less severe.
It's not the melting your face off?
Right, exactly.
This is not the melting your face off,
but it's a very gradual decline over that six months
where it stays pretty good for a long period of time.
Whereas your traditional other brands that we're used to,
like Nose Torque or something like that yeah it hits really hard right away right and even after that
first week it's already not what it was yeah a couple weeks in it's a different product completely
yep and so that's that's the original obsidian ammonia the um this one is going to be exactly
the same only you, only scented.
I think it's menthol or whatever scent I said before.
Now, these two.
And you know what?
We should probably, just in case, I don't think there's anyone that should be confused,
but in case anyone's like, why are they talking about ammonia? Oh, yeah.
Maybe people don't know.
There's probably a couple listeners that maybe are more casual fans.
So ammonia, if you look, we've actually talked about this on the podcast before.
I don't even know what.
You know, when you've done as many episodes as us, things just kind of blur together.
But if you're ever watching like Strongman, powerlifting,
you'll see people with like little capsules,
or you'll see them with a bottle that they're sticking their nose in.
Even on the NFL sidelines, you'll see it a lot now if you pay attention,
where guys have, it almost looks like a little chew pouch even,
and they're sniffing them, throwing them on the ground.
You'll even see coaches holding them in front of their nose.
And what it is, it's ammonia.
And if you smell ammonia and you're kind of in an amped-up state
or you're trying to get yourself amped up, you're trying to stimulate yourself,
if you smell ammonia, it kick-starts your brain.
It gives you like a 10
second like who you know it hits you yeah and so that's where you'll see before big lifts uh a lot
of people will you know take a quick whiff of it and it it just it kind of takes you to a different
level of uh of alertness of different level of consciousness even yeah and it's just for a quick
peek and so that's what uh these companies are doing with ammonia is just giving you, you know, some different options.
Yep, yep.
So you should go to the Obsidian ammonia website there because now I'm getting to, like I said,
these original formula there are just in the standard pill bottles like what I'm used to seeing.
But now this next product is like their extreme.
I'm trying to think of the word.
It's, oh, what is it there?
Those bottom ones with the red.
These ones right here?
Yeah.
Ultra.
Ultra.
That's what they call it is the Ultra.
So they come in a bag.
Okay.
Okay.
I can read the actual description here.
Yeah, go ahead.
Okay, Obsidian Ultra is the world's first two-part ammonia inhalant
that requires activation by combining wet and dry ingredients
to produce what can only be described as a rocket fuel in a bottle.
Yeah.
So if you're a strength enthusiast who demands only the highest quality kicks in the face
before you hit the platform,
then Obsidian Ultra is the ammonia you need in your kit on meat day it's also great for social gatherings wrestling bears and lifting cars off
small children yeah so what what you said you did you pick up on that that it's it's a lick
uh liquid and a dry both in here that you mix together and i'm not sure once because you just
mix a little bit and then like next time i don't know how long that makes your last but then say like next time you want to use it you mix a little bit again and then, like, next time – I don't know how long that makes your last,
but then say, like, next time you want to use it, you mix a little bit again.
Like, you don't mix them all together right off. Just put it in, and you're done.
Right, right, right.
I mean, I suppose you could, but it probably defeats the purpose of it.
Yeah, and if you look at their chart there, like, that has a super high peak,
like, off the start, and then it tapers a little bit more.
But, like, that's going to have that ultra experience.
Yeah, the first month is pretty hardcore.
Yeah, right.
And this is, I think, essentially the same product.
It's just branded for those people that really like Dragon Ball Z.
Which, hey, I like that too.
That's cool.
And I think this is also kind of a one-, it's kind of a one of a kind too,
because,
uh,
there are other ones out there like zone smelling salts.
You have to add water to that when you use it.
But,
um,
if you add too much water,
it burns very strong at the beginning,
but it doesn't last very long.
If you don't add enough water,
it doesn't,
uh,
have that much kick.
But this, since you, it's, I think it's kind of foolproof or dummy proof the way you said it yeah so okay and so this is reef so so this product has refills then so this is a refill
so this is the dry this is the dry powder yeah oh yeah okay so you can buy refills
and this you would not want to be pulled over with this sitting in your car.
This bag of something that looks a lot like cocaine.
This would be kind of a lot of cocaine, wouldn't it?
Who would know?
I've seen Scarface, I guess, compared to that.
It's not a lot.
That's true.
What have you ever seen below with Johnny Depp, though?
You know what?
I actually have never seen that movie.
I haven't seen it for a long time.
I don't remember what it's about, but people talk about it.
They do, yeah.
Oh, yeah, it comes up all the time.
Yeah.
Wow.
So this is pretty cool.
They sent us all this stuff.
I would say Obsidian Ammonia is the ammonia of choice of Massanomics.
They have officially taken over.
Quick review, because I haven't got to actually use it.
I can say packaging wise
a plus yes uh design great love it um and uh product variety love it too yep i like their
website also i looked at some of their competitors website and uh from what i websites and from what
i've seen is obsidian is doing a better job than those other companies are.
And they sell on the Canadian Amazon.
They are from Canada, but he said they ship a lot of product to the United States.
And you even said, because I would have right away,
if someone told me they're shipping out of Canada, I would think two things.
One, it's going to be very expensive shipping,
and two, it's going to take a really long time to get here.
And the time thing doesn't seem to be the case at all and and on their end they they said it's almost cheaper or
maybe it even is cheaper for them to ship to the united states through united states postal service
because uh canadian shipping is very expensive yeah he even made the comment that he thinks that
maybe that uh expensive canadian shipping is how they're paying for their health care
this is a joke but i think you know um and plus you know if you have this in your gym you can be that maybe that expensive Canadian shipping is how they're paying for their health care.
Which makes sense. This is a joke, but I think, you know.
And plus, you know, if you have this in your gym,
you can be the cultured man that has international ammonia.
Ah, yeah.
Not just some regular run-of-the-mill guy that just gets it.
Yeah, this makes you feel a little fancier, doesn't it?
Yeah, from our neighbors to the people.
But I don't think I'm just, you know, we have our chalk bowl that always has ammonia in it.
Like, what would happen if I set all of these in there?
Oh, God.
It would just be a disaster.
It would be an ammonia bowl.
Do you think everyone would do a good job of just using one?
No.
They'd be like, ah, fuck it.
They're like, go crazy.
I want them all.
And they'd all be, like, left open and all ruined within, like, a month.
Just because people would be going nuts on it.
Yeah, yeah.
Did anyone do any PRs this week?
This month?
No.
Just tried the ammonia.
Ammonia PR.
Yep.
You have to save people
from themselves sometimes.
We're going to have to
ration this out
and see how it goes.
Well, based off
of what I'm seeing here,
we have over a year's supply.
This should be a long supply
even for a gym
where we have a lot of people
using a lot of ammonia.
This should last quite a while.
I like they're also on the label, it is science plus violence.
Ah.
I think there was, oh, on the warning on their Ultra, yada, yada, yada, the very last sentence, please don't die.
You know, with most products, that's a good warning to have on there.
But, yeah, we actually haven't tried
any of it but i am going to assume that it's probably pretty strong it looks like yeah i
don't think they'd let us down that hard no no so one of these days when i feel like going for
some heavy lifts again i can report back what if you just did it for like some real but you want
to do some lighter riffs lips really good like
i really need to crush this five by five at 70 awesome well uh thank you obsidian stouts for
that obsidian obsidian inhalants obsidian stout also a delicious beer oh i can't even think of
who makes it now but obsidian stout it's a good bet. Oh. I can't even think of who makes it now, but Obsidian Stout, it's a good beverage.
Is it a crispy boy?
It's a little more than a crispy boy.
Oh, I'm not interested then.
No, thanks.
Do we want to talk about World's Strongest Man a little bit, Tanner?
Yeah, that's right.
So this is an official announcement that came from World's Strongest Man.
2019 World's Strongest Man is going to be in Florida.
Florida.
What's the name of the town?
It's on the west coast.
Bradenton.
Bradenton, Florida.
Of course.
Ah, Bradenton, yes.
Yes.
Not Miami, not Tampa, not Orlando.
Bradenton.
Not the Keys, but obviously Bradenton.
Yep.
On the Gulf side of Florida.
And June?
June 13th through the 16th.
So this announcement just came out by World's Strongest Man, I think, on April 1st.
And they just announced that that's where World's Strongest Man is going to be.
So two and a half months out, they said, oh, by the way, this is where it's going to be this year.
Which is kind of surprising. You would think they'd want to give competitors a little
more heads up as far as traveling competitors issues fans like people might want to go i think
they've accepted the fact that they just don't draw fans well but when you're going to have it
in the united states you probably would if you did a good job of uh they've just given up on that
yeah they're like no we we actually do not want anyone here.
Yeah, maybe that was intentional.
Yeah, but well,
you would almost have to do that
in order to...
You would almost have to be thinking that way
in order to wait for two and a half months out.
I mean, even our local strongman competition,
we hype out more than two and a half months.
Right.
I mean, and the United States
is a large geographic area.
A lot of people that would want to go would have to travel.
Relatively speaking, there's not a lot of Strongman fans,
but in the United States, there is a lot of people that like Strongman,
a lot of people that would probably like the opportunity to go to the World's Strongest Man
because it's not in the United States very often.
And it's a lot easier when to buy a plane ticket for versus South Africa or wherever it's been.
So they should be putting that out earlier.
But from what I understand, that's not their strategy.
That's not how they make their money.
They just make their money by selling the TV deal.
So really the only thing they care about is the TV deal.
That TV money.
Yeah.
That's all we all really care about is that the TV money. Yeah.
That's all we all really care about.
Well, why don't you also do a better job and sell tickets and make more money?
Yeah.
Make a spectacle of it.
Yeah. That'd be cool.
If you could sell tickets, even like 40 bucks a pop and get, get a, you know, get a few
thousand people to come.
Yeah.
Also, you know, why does the, I think this last year was better.
What did it take?
Like two months for the TV broadcast to come out versus the standard six. Yeah. Also, you know, why does the, I think this last year was better. What did it take like two months for the TV broadcast to come out versus the
standard six? Yeah. You know? Yeah. So it's,
maybe it's baby steps for them. Right. And if in a few years,
they might have a decent spectator section.
So with being in the United States and you know,
Rogue is affiliated now with a world's strongest man.
I'm curious to see if they really do a good job with the equipment this year.
Yeah, that would...
It should be easier, I think, for Rogue
to get stuff there and do stuff
if they only have to go to Florida
versus go to Botswana or whatever.
Yeah, so that is the thing.
Is it going to just be, like,
is everything going to be completely Rogue-branded now?
I bet it is.
I would be kind of surprised if it wasn't.
I mean, that's kind of not in the nature of Strongman but also like rogues involved and it's in america so
yeah i'm sure it'll just have their sticker will be slapped on everything right so there's a lot
of rumors going on about it right now those dates say june 13th to june 16th that's the official
dates well normally world's strongest man is a lot longer than that because they do five heats, typically with six guys in each heat.
So they usually have 30 competitors.
So they run through all the heats first,
and then they give them a little bit of a break,
and then they do the finals.
So it's normally a lot longer than three or four days,
but they're advertising it as three or four days.
So what the rumors are, I don't think any of this is confirmed yet,
but what people are saying saying instead of inviting 30 people and doing six heats and then taking the two top of each heat so they
have a 10-man final that's been the format for several years now it's been yep uh many years
in a row that they've done it that way what i've heard people say that they might do is invite less people.
So instead of 30, maybe it's like 10 to 15, something like that.
And instead of in the finals, them doing five events and picking, you know,
the winner with the most points out of those five events wins World's Strongest Man.
Those competitors will do many more events.
wins world's strongest man those competitors will do many more events everyone in the pool say the 15 guys that get invited will all do all of the events and maybe they'll have like 10 events total
spread out over uh uh four days yeah and they will you will add up your points from all 10 of those
events that everyone gets to compete in the get rid of the heat and finals format,
it's just a full round robin.
Everyone gets to compete in every event.
Yeah, that'd be crazy to see.
It would be much different.
It's a much different format. It gives you a lot more.
The other thing is already the TV show gets shortened so much.
Is it now like a two or three episode thing?
If that's the case, you almost have to do that.
Either that or they'll just completely leave out certain events just be like and this
was the truck pull and like the briar show like just showing them right uh which i i so do you
what do you think of the maybe it being that format versus the whole thing the format seems
cool yeah like you get to see these guys compete more.
I mean, the competitors probably aren't going to be huge fans of it because it's like that many more chances for injury.
Well, I feel like, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong on this,
but I feel like don't you think for someone like Brian Shaw that's less ideal?
Because what Brian Shaw would do before, he knows he's going to win his heat.
He can go through and halfway half-ass,
like win a couple of the events that he doesn't have to try that hard on,
and then only do what he has to to win his heat.
Yeah, you just win your first two or three events,
and then literally just don't come in last place.
Right, right.
So that's what he has done in the last several years,
and then make the finals,
and then you've got five events in the finals to, you know,
go balls to the wall.
Just show up and go nuts.
So now if Brian Shaw has to do 10,
10 plus events over the course of four days,
and there would be some gamesmanship of picking and choosing.
I feel like you would,
you know,
I,
I just feel like that fits in last, but you got to do pretty good in a lot of things and choosing. I feel like you would, you know, I just feel like that fits in less. You for sure don't want to come in last,
but like,
yeah,
you got to do pretty good in a lot of things.
Right.
Because Thor's not going to just not perform.
Right.
And so in my mind,
I'm trying to think,
who does that format work better for
versus who does that format work not as good for?
I think it doesn't matter if you're Thor.
Like I would say,
I don't think the format even matters.
You're just, like, almost the best, if not the best, at almost every event.
So I don't know.
And it just seems like it helps probably the younger guys, like Mateus and Martins.
I think Mateus it's good for.
Yeah, because he's, like, just a workhorse is what I picture.
I mean, Martins is kind of the same way, too.
Right.
And in World's Strongest Man finals, if there's five events and one of them is the deadlift that Mateus, you know he's going to do bad at.
Then he's just in a hole the whole time.
That's 20% of the event that he's going to be screwed at.
But if there's over 10 events and if there's still only one deadlift, that's less.
But there could be two deadlifts.
There could.
Yeah, there could be.
Because there could be a max deadlift from the floor,
and there could be a car deadlift.
Or a more traditional one and some weird one.
Yeah, right.
There could be multiple deadlifts.
Yeah, a max and a reps.
That's the part I think would be coolest,
seeing the wide variety of events that they choose to do if they have that many.
Yeah.
Because they really should be able to do just about everything.
You know, instead of just being the deadlift, the log press, andlas stones yeah a pole a press and then the truck pole yep some grip thing
yeah like yeah they could really get some more variety that is the exciting part it's like as
a fan you can see a big because they have kind of followed a formula yeah for a while now i i think
as a general rule the old format works really good for Brian, and it worked really good for Thor.
I think just because, like you said, it opens up more chance for injury and stuff,
I guess my opinion is the old format is – the new format can't be better for Thor than the old format is,
but I still would if they're switching.
I still wouldn't bet against him.
And again, we don't know this for sure yet either.
This is speculation.
Just speculating that that's what it is.
Which I hope it is now because I just want to see something different.
Yeah, I'm all game for that.
Yeah.
Yeah, give us something to watch.
I want to see all the different events.
And like you said, I think for Martins and Mateus,
who are two guys that will be really interesting to watch
to see how they can do this year,
I think that's a really cool way for it to be set up for them.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
It gives them some shots yeah i mean they're kind of are right in that fourth third second area anyways but yeah
you never know opens it up a little bit yeah so but we don't know but yeah so june 13th to the
16th i guess we're busy huh yeah well it is only two and a half months away but that's annoying to me that they
own that they put it out that far because that's something we could potentially go to but that's
such a short uh notice yeah yeah you know that's that's that sucks because if they they put it out
a year ahead ahead of time we can be like hey this is this is then you know is that something
we want to go to screw off but realistically i'd have to be like
oh yeah in two months i want to go to florida for five days is that a big deal or oh no just go
yeah that's part of the conversation yeah right yeah of course be like oh i'll take care of the
kids just go have don't worry about work my boss would also be like, oh, no, that's fine.
Oh, jobs.
Yeah.
Never get one, right?
Wouldn't recommend it.
Stay away.
All right, Tanner, I have a game for us.
Okay.
Is this a segment?
This is a segment for now.
Okay.
And I have to shield my computer.
You are lucky. When you do a game, it's on your phone.
You can shield it very easily. Yeah. When I do a game, it's on my computer. So I have to shield my computer because the ant. You are lucky. When you do a game, it's on your phone. You can shield it very easily.
When I do a game, it's on my computer.
So I have to hide this.
Is this anything like Saw?
You can say there's more on the line than just your life with this game.
There could be way more.
Okay.
Let me get the gear all prepped here.
Okay.
So, Tanner, I'm going to run down the rules on this it's very specific rules
oh and because you're the first contestant ever i do want to make this as clear as possible the
rules i've never actually verbalized these rules before and i might be making some of them up on
the spot um all right so let me give you some backstory here we do a podcast that talks a lot
about the fitness industry i've heard of this podcast and
one of the biggest parts of the fitness industry whether you like it love it hate it or don't care
is the supplement the supplement industry yes we're both kind of yeah supplement guys you know
like um i've been trying to take make myself take creatine again. See, that pretty much sums up our –
Maybe the one most widely accepted worthwhile supplement,
and I can barely get myself to take it.
And that kind of sums up our supplement.
It's like I've got to make myself take creatine.
Because one, it's like you have to remember to take it.
And then also like protein, I mean you've got to buy it.
And being cheap isn't advantageous to owning these things either.
And then it doesn't even touch the iceberg of all of the other.
I mean, there's literally a supplement for every single thing in the world.
And however you feel about that.
I mean, we've all been probably harassed at some point in our life by someone trying to sell you a supplement through some pyramid scheme or something.
But, okay.
So we're going to play a little game, Tanner.
And this game is supplements real or fake.
So you're going to give me a so so.
