We'll catch up with them again a little later in the show,
but here we are.
And I was just thinking about the ads.
What was the part that I didn't like to,
I had a hard time saying?
Oh, was it iron?
Oh, yeah.
Iron.
Yeah, so a personal thank you to Lifting Large
for taking out the word iron out of the ad so I don't have to.
It's the little things.
It makes my life a lot easier knowing.
Now, we could replace on Spud Inc. support sports performance with something.
That's a little tricky one, too.
I usually don't stumble on it too much, but as I'm saying it, I'm like him. I just sound like a snake.
Like a slippery snake.
Yes, that is exactly right.
So, Tommy, how goes it?
You know, it goes pretty good.
What are we going to talk about today, Tanner?
Well, how about number one?
Number one.
Do you want to hear?
Or should we start with number two?
Who does number two work for?
Number one's fine.
We'll start at the top.
Number one's fine okay we'll start at the top number one's okay i this
is not typically when we when we go through these but we do have um podcast reviews that i want to
get to and okay a couple of these have been around for a while and i haven't got to them so i want to
make sure this week we get to them there's some good ones here diligence yes there's some good
ones here forward we always say that if you leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts, we will read it on air.
Now it's time for us to pay up, so to speak.
Five out of five stars.
And this is titled Anabolic Ear Candy.
And it's from Merpleaksh.
Merpleaksh.
Been listening to these gents talk about mostly nothing but fizzy water,
expensive shorts, and other dudes larry for the past year in no logical order and i'm not mad about it if you ever
wanted to delight your ear holes with the real life equivalent of a really jacked beavis and
butthead expounding on the lifting life then you have found your oasis my friend enjoy wow i like
that not the first time we've been called beavis and Butthead. It is definitely not.
The Larry reference is good.
They're a listener.
Yes.
Okay, this one is titled Good Stuff, 5 out of 5 stars,
and this is from Arrow109.
As a middle-aged guy with not much strength or power,
these guys get me motivated and to the gym on a regular basis
and working on power lifts that i never had before
and i'm loving it awesome yeah so that one just a pretty pretty sincere review show you how to get
your strength use your strength not so fast oh one last important review one last review here
yes okay this is a five out of five stars and it's from boschke boschke i believe this happens
to be the man of the jefferson curl oh in the camo if i remember right we had a video we also
made a meme of him too yes yes that made me giggle a lot and it is is to, uh, title is dear Tommy and Tanner.
Tommy T O M I Tanner T A N E R.
Okay.
He says massonomics used to be the world's strongest podcast.
Now they're just a lifting podcast about nothing.
Sad.
I only get,
I only gave this review five stars so they wouldn't just pay to have it
deleted.
If I didn't own three of their shirts, a pair of lift shorts,
and a handful of stickers and two Mastinomics sweaters, I'd stop listening.
I guess I'm in too deep now.
He's heavily invested.
Otherwise, I want to thank Mastinomics for what they do in the podcast
and all the rest.
They're doing a great job.
I hope everybody keeps tuning in.
They've got a lot of good info, a lot of insights,
understandings on how to get strong, how to stay strong,
how to use your strength.
P.S., the Jefferson curl is the one true curl.
Jefferson deadlifts are old news.
Oh, I like that.
Anytime there's a Kaz reference in there,
it makes something classic.
And if that is the guy that made the Jefferson curl,
he is on a whole other level
pretty sure it is and yeah yeah it would be almost weird if he wasn't no and his name that name popped
out to me and i i remember that you know i hate to hate to talk about what could have been but
if the jefferson curl would have been in the jefferson deadlift competition that would have
made a pretty strong argument for uh for a play scene of some kind he probably missed out on a
an opportunity a possible top 10 finish
in the JDL League contest.
He did get to live in that.
He did get to exist in that meme.
He got a Mastinomics meme made out of him.
That's worth quite a bit.
It is.
You can't put a price on that.
No, you can't.
Really, you can't.
So that's our reviews.
So on that note, make sure to get your reviews and i think we're just
uh breaking the 155 star review mark on apple podcast you know what they say once you get to 200
just money rolls in or something we don't i don't know what they say but they say something
something good happens something good happens uh something else good happens at this part of the
podcast too tanner where we hop into a crispy refreshment all right and i want you to guess this time
and i don't want to jinx you but i'm i might be a little surprised if you don't get this one tanner
don't say that i'm just all right have you forgotten my history of uh what's in the can
no looking now no looking no looking all right and i haven't seen i haven't seen even colors or anything so once in a while i see some colors yeah yeah this is what's in that can for
those of you that don't know where we uh take i mean it can be anything it tends to be a sparkling
water of some kind because sparkling water and tanner tries his hardest to guess usually to know
and if you haven't had lacroix or anything like that in the past,
you don't know how hard this game can be.
And even if you are a fan of LaCroix's,
you have to actually try doing this like a blind taste test.
Mm-hmm.
Mm, tastes very sprightly to me.
A little zippier.
Yeah, very Sprite-y.
I would have to say lemon-lime because it tastes a lot like...
Is Sprite flavored lemon-lime?
Sprite is lemon-lime.
I'm saying lemon-lime then.
So you're saying this is a lemon-lime.
Is it a soda or a fizzy water?
Oh.
is a lemon lime is it a soda or a fizzy water oh it's funny how someone that normally drank pop would probably laugh and be like this is not a pop but to me i have to actually think about it
because i don't drink pop very often so i don't not used to it because to me i'm like this has
quite a bit of flavor yeah to me this has a lot of flavor i think it does too um but it's a fizzy water i'm
pretty sure all right lemon lime fizzy fizzy water maybe not a lacroix maybe something different
you want to take a look at what we got here it's green it is green so that's a good start a green
lime water waterloo now this i do have to do have to give Jake Heinrich credit on this one.
He sent me a lot of Waterloo photos.
Yep.
Finally, I gave in.
Jake the Snake Heinrich.
Speaking of another winner of the JDL competition.
I finally gave in to his peer pressure at Target the other day.
I saw they had Waterloo.
I'm like, you know what?
I better get on that.
Waterloo might be the strongest flavor out of any sparkling water this has a strong flavor
like to the point where i actually had to look on the label and see if there was sugar in it even
there is not it says still says all natural flavors no sugar is a waterloo cheaper or more
expensive or not sure i think an eight pack was like three dollars i don't even know what and i
was gonna say i can't i can't even really tell
you what the other stuff costs i just get it i haven't been uh i do know i did pay attention
enough to know that uh on the very top shelf at target is your your s pellegrino and those ones
and those ones are more expensive i want to say if an eight pack was like five dollars okay which
to me seems like enough for those for like the little can of
that but right um yeah these i think were pretty much the same price the other ones i think the
one jake normally sends is like peach or pear or something based off of how this is i'm kind of
curious to know what that one tastes like now yeah this one's good though i can recommend it
i think i was a little wrong right i said lemon Yeah, it is just lime, but it does.
I mean, it does taste a lot like Sprite.
I think I would give this four JD Power and Associates Awards.
That's a pretty strong rating.
Maybe even more.
You know, the fact that it tastes so much like a pop that people like,
I feel like it's got to be rated pretty highly.
It does say right on the can, legendary taste.
LaCroix doesn't say that.
That's true.
LaCroix's taste is not legendary is it incredibly subtle taste I think is what it says on there okay hmm so you gave it four
gosh I don't know that's such so hard to I'll give it 3.5 I mean we are talking JD
Power and Associates Award it's not just something you just give away.
We gave Matt Vinson a J.D. Power and Associates Award even last week,
so you know he was a good guest.
I'll give it 3.5.
I'll stick with that.
I'll give it the usual Mathenomics 3.5. The old tried and true.
Yeah.
Middle of the road.
It is good, though.
Something that happened to me, our furnace quit working. Oh. Our house, and it's actually not working. Lovely time of the road. It is good, though. Something that happened to me, our furnace quit working in our house,
and it's actually not working.
Lovely time of the year for that.
And I was thinking it used to be handier when one of the co-hosts
of the Massonomics podcast was an HVAC man by trade.
It was very handy.
My air conditioner quit working one time,
and he came over and got that thing in tip-top shape for me
in a matter of
just a quick phone call and yes based off what he told me that would have cost me quite a bit
of money yes i also had him do something at one point in time and um wishing he was here right now
to have done that just to just hold you over a couple more months. But instead, we had to call the old repairman.
Is that a major repair?
Do you know yet?
Sounds like it shouldn't be.
But there was a part that had to get ordered in.
They can't get it until tomorrow.
And they'll be able to repair it tomorrow.
So we'll go without a furnace tonight.
But we have a fireplace.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, yeah.
Then we got like an Eden Pure heater to plug in right so it's
and luckily it's not like a two-story house either right and we just won't
habitate in the habitat in the bass basement today you know tonight so just
block us off to one floor and yeah close down a few just put everyone in one bedroom and lock
the door and just say we can't get out of out like the power went out you guys are just shutting but i'm still afraid of the bill because
yeah house repairs house repairs are always that one thing where it's just you never know
some not often but occasionally you're pleasantly surprised the other way and it comes and they do
work and you're like really that's all you're going to charge me for yeah i've had that happen
a couple times but i've also had it happen the other way where they come do work, and you're like, really, that's all you're going to charge me for? I've had that happen a couple times, but I've also had it happen the other way
where they come, do their thing,
and you're like, that was that much money?
Because I don't think anything happened there.
The joys of a house, though.
Yeah, and the trick, especially,
you know, I've owned a house for,
I don't know, probably 12 years or something like that.
So I've had, and my first house was much, much older and, you know, had two furnaces and.
A backup furnace, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Redundancy.
Yes.
And I had to find out is that some people are, some technicians are the ones that immediately go to, we should replace your furnace.
And I'm very much not, let's replace my furnace guy.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
So it's a cost like $5,000.
Yeah.
Let's just keep putting band-aids on this until it really is not a good idea.
Well, until I sell the house.
And that's what I did.
But like really is not a good idea.
Well, until I sell the house and that's what I did.
And I put a few hundred dollar band-aids here and there, like went to like versus spent buying the $5,000 furnace.
I know.
Like when I bought my first house, they said, I think it's something they all old houses
say.
Like the inspector goes, I mean, it's kind of an old furnace.
It could.
Furnace is about 10 years old.
It could go out tomorrow or could last 10 years from now.
is about 10 years old it could go out you know tomorrow or 10 years from now and i lived in that house for like six years to the day didn't have a single problem with the furnace that is the
standard thing on furnace it it's about 7 to 12 years old it could last 10 more years or just
like you said and that i that is the most common thing that's always said. Yeah. Yeah.
Unless you just bought your furnace last year, you're not safe.
No one is safe.
This furnace is about two years old.
It's the newer ones, the energy efficient thing.
They just really, they're not good anymore.
Now that we've given everyone up to speed on furnace expectations.
In case you don't own a home that if that is what you one of the things you have to look for is your furnace not working
sometimes yeah unless you live in a part of the country where that's not really an issue that's
true but we live in a part of the country where that's very much an issue right um yeah but we
have we've now covered that so we're well on our way outside of the furnace thing we have now covered that, so we're well on our way. Outside of the furnace thing,
we have been getting ready for the Arnold quite a bit.
Yeah, we have.
We really have been getting ready for the Arnold quite a bit.
Tanner has, if anyone needs a retail worker
to fold clothes on the weekend somewhere.
Excellent shirt folder.
And I know my way around a good front and face
on an end cap anyways, so.
Oh, do you?
Yeah.
From your Menards experience?
Yes.
Okay.
I know my way around a front and face.
But, yeah, I folded 800 shirts, got about 150 more to fold,
so that'll be real close, and then probably some odds in one.
So in the course of a week or two, I will have folded 1 a thousand shirts um along with us just getting a lot of other stuff ready like i feel
like we're uh doing a lot more preparation this year than we have than we did last year just and
not saying we didn't do preparation but in in comparison yeah we didn't do preparation yeah
but we also didn't know what we were getting into we did enough to like not show up and look like
idiots right but this year we uh we're trying to have a well-oiled machine.
Right.
And, you know, with all this, it could just fall apart in a matter of minutes.
But the intentions are there this year to have it be a much better experience.
The booth experience be better for not only us, but also potential shoppers.
For consumers, yes.
I believe it will be too.
It better be.
Otherwise, it's been a lot of work for not much.
I don't know how it could have. No. It will for too. It better be. Otherwise, it's been a lot of work for not much. I don't know how it could.
It will for sure be a better experience.
I think it should translate to more sales.
I also don't know how it couldn't.
But if it didn't, I guess that's the way it goes.
I would be shocked though.
We do have a corner this year.
We do have a corner.
So that'll be kind of cool.
And they did change the thing.
Actually, you sent me a picture of this.
We haven't talked about it. it well so they opened that aisle yeah well they made an
aisle out that was two booths directly across from us last year was pretty much huck finn yes we were
kind of actually probably split between huck finn and a supplement company right we moved over one
booth which would be exactly where jb boss was um but now this year they've created an aisle
there right which is kind of weird a little bit it is weird and so depth of four dishonor moved in
they got one of those spots and i asked them so because corners are more expensive we're on the
corner this year they charge a premium for that and they technically are now too right yeah so
they chart they had to pay the corner price so my thought is maybe and not all the
booths are filled yet still to this day not all the booths are filled i wondered if part of the
logic of that is hey we're just gonna we haven't filled all the booths but there's still a demand
for corners we'll just take out these two we have additional corners we have less boost to rent but
they're not all filled up
anyways and we're not making more because we're charging more for corners right exactly so i i
think that's probably the that would be my logic of why they did i wonder if that is actually how
they do it like all right we'll just set it up for max capacity like like a headache inducing
amount of people in these aisles and then if demand is low we'll just put it back to a actual
usable usable level right because last year was just ridiculous yes to the point of like there
just being so many people especially in that i like saturday that i there's times where it was
like well then they had the whole thing with what's it uh callum callan von moger whatever
i can never remember his name. Right.
Like where they had to like shut to get the cops in and like shut down the aisle.
It's like,
Oh,
that's great for all the people that are paying money like us for a booth
that the cops are blocking traffic off.
Yeah.
Really,
really good planning on everyone.
Really good money to,
to be there in that booth space.
It is also funny.
We've probably talked about it too,
that some of the companies that are they're paying for booths cannot expect to some of them don't have anything to sell so they're just
they're literally marketing i guess but like that's an expensive uh just marketing training
to us it is i would also say to a lot of it still is a lot of small businesses there it's not it's not a lot of rogues no i think most of
the space that's if you go by space filled it's you know granted like rogue takes up a huge
footprint and some of those bigger companies but the big supplement companies and bang but the
bulk of the space taken up is still by small businesses don't you think yeah i think i think
the the largest number of booths are single single booth occupants you know
right and a lot of them don't have that much to sell either no that's what that's what i mean
some people are not there selling anything yeah which is just hard because we we you know pencils
out for us shaking hands and kissing yeah boy yeah i i couldn't hey if someone else was on someone else's dime i would go
right hang out i guess it's still not the best place to just hang out either
no and that's just like what matt was talking about last week that it's not
it's really not a hangout especially for us like it's really like pretty intense work yeah
especially when we're awake we're getting there like by seven every day and just assuming we're not going to go to the bathroom
for like 12 hours.
It's also like a way different kind of work
than I normally do in my life now too.
Yeah.
I stand and talk more in one day there
than I do in months of my own personal work.
Yes, me too.
Me too, for sure.
Yeah, without a doubt.
But I guess you have to be a little bit,
that's as like working a booth, that's like kind of what you have to be a little bit that's uh as like the
working a booth that's like kind of what you have to do yeah it's fun though no it is it is a lot of
fun it's like our we're so landlocked it's our one time of the year we can actually meet people
and talk and have a good time so yeah the other thing about the arnold that i was wanted to
mention is we had talked about it i had brought up that it'd be really great if they uh brian shaw didn't qualify for the arnold by the normal arnold qualification standards and it
i was wondering if they would just say yeah fuck it you're coming anyways you're brian shaw yes
and i was curious if that would happen and apparently a lot of people were curious about
that and asking him about it and he did put out a uh i think I think he did like a Q and a on YouTube or something like that. But he responded to this question because people,
Arnold himself,
I think at Santa Monica said something like it was a little confusing the way
he said it,
but said something about how he's going to make sure Brian,
yeah,
Arnold did,
you know,
at,
at,
after the Santa Monica show when he didn't make
it and um brian kind of addressed that and said he arnold really didn't talk to him about that
he doesn't know if he did say something or not but if he did it wasn't he hasn't said that to him
but he said if they did ask him to do it he would turn it down because he just doesn't he
wouldn't want there are
qualification standards and he wouldn't feel right taking that it might not actually you have to
wonder like how prepped he is at this point too like if he's assuming he's not going into it right
then that's a big part of it to get a call last minute or two weeks before him like hey you ready
to go he could definitely go and perform but he's's not going to perform, I would think, to the level that he wants to perform.
And he said it's almost, he's a little relieved in some ways of not doing it
because this allows him to just train for World's Strongest Man,
not like crash train for the Arnold, get done with that.
Get injured in some way like he has the last couple years.
In the last 10 years, he hasn't ever gotten to just train for world's strongest man.
Also an interesting point.
He said the Arnold is great and it's a big show and it's kind of the heaviest show and people respect it and love it a lot.
And I think he's won three of them.
But he said, if I win a fourth Arnold strong man, that means absolutely nothing to me or almost anyone else.
But if I win a fifth world's strongest man title, like that is in strong man.
That's the thing that people talk about is how many times have you won world's
strongest man?
Yeah,
it,
it is.
That one's a tricky one for me.
Obviously I'm not ever going to be,
we don't have to worry about it too much.
I'm just purely talking as an outsider,
but yeah,
I do.
World's strongest man is Man is the bigger title.
But titles are always that thing that you have forever.
You know, records will be broken.
No matter what the record is, it will go away sometime.
So just because you're a record holder now,
give it one, two, five, 10, 20 years,
your name will either be at number two or 30 on the list,
depending on how things change
titles no one can take you that from you you have that forever and i don't think brian shaw has like
a ton of world records to his name he probably he definitely has some i don't know like if he has a
ton and that's not really how he world records and strongman super and they weren't even hardly a
thing until like within the last
five years and people started talking about these prior to that they like people they didn't really
care it was just about the titles and everything especially in strongman it was just about the
titles and then like i think the deadlift was a big thing i think it was the deadlift in the law
yeah i was gonna say those that got these world records started getting it going prior to the
last five years i don't think in strongman people didn't really give a shit about the
you know the records yeah and strongman isn't a particular sport where it's really conducive
for the records powerlifting is because it is literally numbers pretty much standardized yeah
it's meant to be as cookie cutter as possible right but strongman is you know there's so many
other variables yeah but, he is right.
The World's Strongest Man.
That title is the most important.
That is the pinnacle of the Strongman sport.
But I would think that an Arnold Strongman classic has to be number two, right?
Yes.
I think for sure it's number two.
I think, you know, that everyone would agree with that.
Especially the other one there, too, is ohio you know only what 10 people get
to go yes where's world's strongest man 20 people get to take a shot at it yep and i know there's
qualifiers and things leading up to it so you could almost say that well the classic is the
finals that world's strongest man has anyways right right right yeah that's kind of true too
it is yeah it's different things i i yeah, I get what he's saying though. That makes sense.
I buy it.
But he also hinted at like,
maybe there would be some change to the,
cause he said the way the rules are now, he said that like three or four times,
the way the rules are now,
I wouldn't have qualified.
So it kind of made me think like,
there'll be a,
as the rules are.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Not this good way for it.
Right.
Cause my thing is like like maybe they just say
everyone that's a former champ, if they want to do it,
you have an open invitation.
Yep.
Which I can understand how that makes sense
because you always want, like anyone that's ever won a football.
It's a loss for, besides, well, even Brian Shaw a little bit,
but for promoters, fans, and everyone else,
it's a loss with him not being there because he's one of the biggest names because even if say big z who's
one you know wanted maybe i think he's probably won it more than anyone ever has the arnold
and he hasn't been competing at that stage for a few years now but if just all of a sudden this
year he's like yep i'm taking a crack at it everyone would be like oh people would be like
oh awesome you know he's like doesn't have to do any qualifiers.
He's like, I am just making a run at that one show.
And maybe he doesn't.
Yeah, that would be really cool.
The thing that would start to happen there is over the course of 10 years.
Well, but you said winners, though.
We've only had, have we had four winners in the past six years, maybe?
Yeah, probably.
Even if you took it back 10 years.
Brian Thor and Z.
Brian Thor and Z. Martin. No. No, Martin hasn't. He got. Yeah, was it Even if you took it back 10 years. Brian Thor and Z. Brian Thor and Z.
Martin.
No.
No, Martin hasn't.
He got.
Yeah, was it Thor last year?
Yeah, Thor won back to back.
The other Lithuanian guy has won it before, too.
Actually, that.
That Lala.
Yeah, he's won the Arnold one year.
I'm pretty sure.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So those are.
There's only four people.
And that's including.
Eddie Hall didn't that
one year did he i don't think i don't think he's ever won yeah arnold i don't think he's ever won
the arnold yeah because i think i'm born strong z one yeah he won it that year so there's really
if you include z and vitalis lalas and thor and shaw there's really only four existing champions
that yeah could you know not probably be embarrassed if they went and competed.
Yeah, that would be cool.
Yeah, that would.
If you left it up to 10 people and then previous people get an automatic.
Previous winners get an automatic invite.
Because right now it's just if you won last year,
you'll get the automatic invite, right?
And if you won the amateur, when you win the amateur,
the year before you get to be on the big stage too, which is kind of cool.
Yeah, that would be cool.
Yeah.
Wow.
Well,
now that we got that figured out,
it's time for some freaking ads.
Now that we got that solved,
we figured out how Brian Shaw should feel about things.

I agree
thank you to our sponsors
so we have a special call
we haven't even talked about that we're calling
a special friend for the episode yeah we are I guess we'll let the cat out of the bag we're gonna call big jake
of barbend maybe something we should have uh i should have asked you off air but probably funnier
on air you say his last name boley correct i think yeah it's b-o-l-y right yeah right to me that's
boley okay i think it's settled i you were going to surprise me with something else.
No, no, no.
No, I just, that's just something I'm like,
yeah, you should probably hash that out before you call someone on your podcast.
Because I suppose the alternative would be Bally.
Possibly.
Maybe it's Bully.
There could be like an accent mark in there that we've missed.
Well, I guess we'll find out.
We'll give him a call right now.
Get that queued up.
Hopefully. hopefully hello yes is this jake from state farm uh this is him who may i ask is calling uh this is the
massonomics podcast oh excellent i told you guys once before that I didn't want any Bibles, but I guess we're here.
Yep, we're back, Jake. This is Tommy and Tanner. How are you doing today?
We're doing well. How are you guys?
We're doing great.
Good. I was just looking, you know, I had texted you earlier today letting you know that we were going to call,
and an old text conversation from the first time we texted was on here.
We met back on March 2nd, 2018.
Jeez, it's been that long already?
Yeah.
Time flies, doesn't it?
Yeah, that was pre-Arnold 2018.
Yes, when this rich relationship started to bloom.
Ever so rich.
rich relationships started to bloom.
Ever so rich.
Jake, could you give everyone, all of our listeners, a quick background bio of who you are and what you do?
Yeah, so quick little rundown.
My name is Jake Foley.
I am the fitness editor at barbin.com.
I've been there for about three and a half years.
And then on the side of that, I run a personal training business through a personal brand I have called
concrete athletics.
So I like to tie the writing and editorial with actual training as opposed to
just being a writer in the field.
So yeah,
it's kind of me in a nutshell,
man.
I have my master's in sports science,
a CSCS and bachelor's in sport,
um,
exercise science.
And I've been a barb in for a long time.
So you have actual degrees.
I was going to say you have way more qualifications to talk about anything that we talk about.
I don't know about that.
So you have actual degrees and a professional career in this field even.
Yeah, I think professional is used loosely in this, in this field even. Yeah. I think, I think professional is, uh, is used loosely in this sense, but yeah.
Uh, I, I do think that that's an interesting point though, that a lot of the people,
if you took like, say, um, the lifting Instagram world, a snapshot of the snapshot of that,
there's a lot of people that maybe like
us and like a lot of power lifters, a lot of lifters out there that just have like a little
bit of a gig or, you know, they work for themselves in some way. They do some programming, some
coaching, some various things, but you work for a company in bar bend. I know you do some things on
your own as well, but you work for a company in Bar Bend that really exists as, I don't know, a pretty significant entity in this space.
It's a little bit uncommon, I think.
Yeah, I think it is pretty rare, and I'm very, very fortunate, I think, to be where I'm at with Bar Bend, to be quite honest.
I don't think it's common to exactly work in, let's say, an editorial space like this, especially one that's so centric on strength sports. So every day I feel very fortunate.
And it's like being able to talk to guys like you
and work with athletes on the regular,
that's a dream, honestly.
Nothing is ever taken for granted
when I show up to work every day.
It's honestly a blessing.
Yeah, and does anyone,
I mean, is there anybody besides you guys
actually reporting on strength sports?
Yeah, there are some other entities out there but um usually they're more focused on let's like one sport so
you have like morning chalk up they do great coverage across fit you have starting strong
man they are great at covering strong man but i think we're the i guess strength sports site
that kind of ties everything together and it's funny cause you're seeing sites like men's health now jump into
covering strength sports a little bit more.
And they're starting to actually write on bigger lifts and power lifting.
Like they covered Steffi's latest performance.
They cover Brian Shaw a lot,
Eddie Hall.
So I think bigger mainstream sites are finally getting it that,
Hey,
strength sports are growing.
It might be smart to actually start paying the fuck attention to other stuff
than just getting abs in 10 quick moves. So it's been,
it's been really interesting seeing other sites come up and start to cover it.
But in terms of, I think a all in one or an all in one strength sports site,
I think we are probably actually, no, I know we are the biggest right now.
At least it's covering all the strength sports on one platform.
For sure.
And you've even covered some massonomic stuff before,
so that's a pretty big feather in your path.
Yeah.
I covered the strongman event.
Hell yeah.
And we don't let just anyone cover us.
It's a very elite group.
I like to believe I was like like I did I obviously wasn't
like an OG OG massonomics but I've been following you guys for so long because your stuff's such a
riot man I think you guys do amazing stuff for the community and you like I think you shine a
light on the community that's like great because it gives a platform to a lot of athletes but also
does so in like a humanistic like satirical way so it kind of like creates that it's not an edge off of i think all the
seriousness that we can kind of get wrapped up into when it comes to just like lifting weights
but at the end of the day you guys make it enjoyable and consumable for everybody people
who don't even need to love a certain strength sport can enjoy a post on powerlifting if they're
a weightlifter stuff like that i like i'm a huge Math and Amics fan. Yeah, I'll cover you guys anytime you need.
All right.
Well, that was the soundbite we need.
So thanks, Jake.
I guess we'll go now.
Play that on loop for an hour.
That's like a better summary wrap-up of what we do
than I would ever be able to articulate, I think.
You guys literally sell satirical shorts
and you marked them up like four times.
Okay, so as long as you brought it up here, there is a bone to pick.
So tell me about 10,000.
Oh, here we go.
I saw you guys share a story with the comments.
Those are not my list shorts.
I saw that.
So we didn't start that, though. guys share a story with uh with the comments those are not my list shorts i saw that so we
didn't start we didn't start that though that was kind of like we're just kind of we're just kind of
picking picking up on where where some of our fans have picked that and not just it's not picking on
any particular brand that's coming on several but what's tell us what do you know what uh ten
thousand uh tagline is by chance i think it depends um i i know one of their big ones right now is nothing
changes if nothing changes i believe that's like brian maza's that he's the club um i think
every day better i believe it's ten thousands or um i forget their actual tag there was one
there was one other one i have to i have to get it out there, though, because it was good.
What is it here?
The only training shorts you'll ever need was the top line I saw on the Instagram page.
So that's why we had to call that out.
The only workout shorts you'll ever need.
Yes, yes, yes.
I mean, to be quite honest, I actually stumbled across those guys a few years ago my buddy one of my old buddies
who was actually my mentor in personal training connected me with their ceo at the time when they
were a little bit newer and um yeah like they they gave me some free gear at the time like
technically i'm an ambassador but i never really like pushing that stuff on my social like every
once in a while i'll drop a plug but reality is like i just am not a huge advocate of pushing different products.
And the reason I do actually work with them, cause they're the only company I actually
work with is just because there's stuff like I'm a stickler of like, if it works and it
fits, I will wear that shit until I'm dead.
Like, I don't care how it looks.
I don't give a shit.
Like if it smells like I will wear that every day.
And that's like kind of the, the reason I like them is just because man, their stuff
performs well. I still have my first pair of shorts from them from a couple of years ago.
Granted, once I have enough money and I pay off my student loans, I might invest in some
Mastinama shorts, but I'm still like 120 K deep. So don't expect me to invest any aspirational
goals, but Hey, that's really, that's fun to work for. We hope the consumers aren't
doing what you just said you're doing.
We hope they're just purely looking at price and making their decisions based on that and saying, ah, most expensive, got to have those.
Yeah, I mean, I think it's more of like a booze statement, right?
It's like a statement.
You walk into the gym where I live, and nobody's messing with you.
Guys are getting off the bench for you.
Whatever you need need you got what what about what about physique and what about uh the ebook tell tell
us about oh man you know it's funny uh he was just here with his girlfriend for a week we stayed in
my little studio in new york and there was three of us right and o And Elgin is a really good friend of mine.
Him and I connected last year, probably just about a year ago,
and we were talking about how we could work with one another,
and we came up with this book idea.
But circling back to this past week,
he came up to work on another project with me.
The book went live in December.
It had a lot of growth.
We thought it actually did way
better than we expected so we're doing our next project but him and his girlfriend man staying
with me for a week in my tiny studio it was a riot it was such a good time like and his girlfriend
sarah is amazing so so nice and the first thing she does i'm not even kidding you i go to work
on thursday they're like exploring the city but i come back home my whole apartment is clean she's like i can't do math mind you i mind you i cleaned
my apartment before they came like i was like i thought it was clean by my standards but it was
like a whole another level and then to take it even a step further like man i swear to god they
love carbs so much.
I compete on Sunday, right?
And I'm sitting around like 179 before they came.
But all we did was eat pasta and donuts.
And now I'm weighing like 184.
And I have to actually kind of be mindful of my weight in the next three days.
So you have a meet this weekend then?
Yeah, I compete on Sunday.
Yeah, we'll see how that goes excellent
um one of the so what what's what's his name that the owner of physique then what did you say his
first name is his his name is ogen loki okay is he the artist then yeah so that's that's something
that he's like man it's crazy because i like him and I have tied a lot of our talents together. And, man, he is such a great artist. And I was watching him work while he was here. And just like how he formats things and takes his ideas and like create them is insane. He does it all on a tablet. And it just looks so damn clean every single time. And he's so quick at it.
It's unreal.
But yeah, that's all his own art.
He is the artist.
And he comes up with the ideas there.
Yeah, that's impressive.
You never know behind certain accounts how much people actually do with certain things.
So I always think it's awesome when you hear of people actually doing their own stuff.
Right.
Yeah, none of that stuff's outsourced.
That's all him.
And we have actually ripped off one of his drawings before, but he liked it.
He said he got a kick out of it.
It was very funny.
He was leaving today, actually. I literally just booked him an Uber to the airport probably an hour and a half ago.
And I was talking, I was like, yeah, I'm podcasting with the Math and Amish guys tonight.
He's like, oh, those are the guys that took the Jefferson deadlift and made it their own.
And he's like,
we're dying.
Yeah.
He loves you guys.
He thinks you guys are right.
Uh,
great.
All right.
Uh,
have you guys actually,
you know what?
I have a question for you guys.
Have you ever done something satirical like that and had backlash from
somebody?
Oh,
we always get people that,
there's always people that don't get the joke at all
and then get mad that we're joking about something
because training is not something you joke about.
But if you're asking,
if we've done something satirical
and if the original creator of what we used as the base,
if they've gotten upset at us or gone farther with it,
the answer to that is
basically no yeah no yeah if we're using stuff like that we try to be very obvious about where
we're getting it from like yeah um otherwise you know memes are almost kind of just uh yeah
public domain really there there is always an uh an element of uns a little bit on uncertainty
there but like it's great like say when we took one of Fizik's
and we turned it into something, make sure to
tag them and give them
credit that this is their original
post that we're just
making it silly, but it is
reassuring and fun when we see
them comment on there that
getting a couple laughs out of it.
But no, I don't think anyone's ever really gotten upset
about that sort of thing. It's interesting interesting i wonder if it has to do with like
you know i feel like if you do that for a living you know it's like you don't really get mad at
that stuff anymore it's always the people i think that aren't like aren't kind of on that circle of
like i guess the no we can call it that get mad you know like yeah like if somebody ever
said something from barb and then they
credit us like i think that's really cool i would never get mad about that but it's like yeah i
couldn't imagine somebody would actually get mad if you guys are given accreditation and like
making it a soft joke never intended to be yeah and i think we've always like put enough of our
take on it too where it's always kind of i mean it's definitely you can tell where the source
content came from but like we've done enough of a remix
to where it is its own thing now
where it has legs a little bit. It's not
just like we literally took this person's post
and then said, look what
we made. And leave it
ambiguous enough that we're saying, hey, look what
we made. We're not really saying we made it but
it looks like we did here. Yeah, I think we
kind of avoid that enough at least.
Yeah, I think you guys walked the that enough, at least. Yeah.
Yeah, I think you guys walked the line really well, honestly.
We're like Johnny Cash.
All right, Jake, probably the most important reason we had to have you on here today was to get you to play along with our overrated to underrated game.
Are you interested in playing with us today?
Yeah, sure.
I'm ready to be judged based off my gut reaction to your question.
Perfect. That is exactly right. And we do have a full list of rules. We won't go over the full
list today. But just so you know, you do have to come up with a final answer of overrated or
underrated. You can't say anything is appropriately rated. That's probably the number one key here.
Number two is you have your druthers to kind of take this spin as you'd like.
We'd like to hear you maybe talk out loud a little bit about why you're choosing the way you're choosing.
Anything else you need to know?
Yeah, those are the two big points.
Just talk it out, and you have to make a decision is really what it comes down to.
We always kind of specify it's not – the question really isn't do you like it or do you dislike it?
It's is it overrated or underrated?
Got it.
All right.
So are you ready?
I can do that.
And we do cater these a little bit to you here today.
So I think you'll enjoy the topics.
Topic number one, Jake, overrated or underrated?
True form runners.
Overrated. Overrated.
Because the reason, okay,
so I love true form runners,
but I like to run outside, and
I think they're expensive as shit.
So personally, I think they're
overrated, but I like the benefit of them
in the gym for a lot of people because they actually are
I think a lot more beneficial than
traditional treadmills.
I think that's a pretty reasonable answer.
Okay, topic number two.
Overrated or underrated flannel shirts?
Under-fucking-rated.
I feel like, dude, if you guys have any sound to Cody,
you know I'm packing all my flannels, which are just two.
I only wear two.
Keep them in rotation
all week. Yeah, I don't know if I can speak any more highly of flannel shirts. I think
they go great in every setting, wear them to weddings, wear them to funerals. Flannel
shirts every day.
All right. That's a very resounding underrated.
Yep. I think you're on the nose on that one, too. Topic number three, overrated or underrated New i think you're i think you're on the nose on that one too topic number three overrated or underrated new york city
honestly overrated despite the fact that i i love it but at the end of the day like new york is
very expensive it is not the healthiest place, in my opinion, to live. It's very stressful,
very just beat you down. Like I would rather be living in Denver, doing my thing, having a little
bit more nature in my life. But I love the city for what it's worth. I love the career I've built
here. And I love the people in the network I've built. So in terms of like overall quality of
life, definitely overrated. But hell, i'm still here working and love it and
i guess i'm just a sadistic person so where are you from originally i'm from outside of san luis
my family has a tiny well i don't think they have a they have a house out in a tiny town
outside of san luis probably like an hour west of san luis so so yeah my town all we have is a
walmart and an applebee's all right so, New York really is a change of pace then.
Yeah, man.
I moved here in 2011 on a whim.
I had never visited where I went to school.
I just knew I wanted to be here and knew what I wanted to do and just pulled the trigger
and went.
Awesome.
If you ever want even a more extreme reversal change of pace, you're always welcome to Northeast
South Dakota. Sounds good. want to even a more extreme reversal change of pace you're always welcome to northeast south
dakota sounds good i mean i actually went uh i went on vacation there when i was i want to say
11 or 12 and i don't know if this is something to like brag about on a podcast but well this is the
time to do it if you're going to brag about it yeah the reason the reason the reason why i wanted
to go so bad as a kid is we
went to mount rushmore and i actually don't know which dakota that is but we stayed in both of them
but dude i was i had a weird obsession with prairie dogs when i was younger like i had i had
so many stuffed prairie dog toys so being able to go to the dakotas and see the prairie dogs and i
don't know if they're in south dakota or north dakota yeah but dude that was like that was the
highlight of my summer one year.
Yeah, you would have saw a lot of them.
The states will always have a soft spot in my heart, those two.
All right.
But your final answer, New York City, you did say overrated, though?
Overrated, yeah. You can make a perfectly fine living and excel not not in the city, for most careers, in my opinion.
And you're not going to live such an unhealthy lifestyle, in my opinion.
Okay.
Your final topic over at Deteriorated today.
We labeled it Instagram Fitness Challenges.
and for more context on that we you know we um thor's challenge your your challenge that you uh popularized here recently we had um a jefferson deadlift uh competition challenge
that sort of thing um at some point in time too. So all,
all three of us talking here,
I've been involved in them,
but,
but go ahead.
We're,
we're curious to hear your interpretation.
You know,
it's funny.
Um,
my gut.
Okay.
So look,
my gut says overrated,
but I'm going to go with underrated.
And there's a reason for it.
One,
I think that fitness challenges can take kind of a
negative light when people blow them out of proportion or they take them to the next level.
But I think they're underrated because they do connect a lot of people together. Like we didn't
mean the Thor challenges and get like, even like get as much traction as it did, to be quite honest.
I saw some high schooler do it on Tik TOK and I was like i could do that so we so we did it and it like it was cool because we had all these people connecting
with us and like actually sharing with us and sending us messages and stuff like that and
it got people talking and i guess sharing more with one another so i think that's cool
i do think there are some challenges that can be taken too far but um in terms of what we do, I don't know.
The Jefferson Challenge was really fun.
You got athletes involved.
You got athletes working with one another, competing.
It was lighthearted.
So I think they're underrated in the sense of building community.
But I do think they can be overrated if you're just doing it for the clout.
You know, like if you're just doing fitness challenges day in and day out on Instagram, then
I think they're overrated, but underrated in the sense of connecting the community.
And you are really skating the line there, Jake, of deciding on an overrated or underrated.
Oh my God. I know. Underrated is my final answer.
I think that was good reasoning behind that too. That was pretty fair. That wraps up our
overrated, underrated segment the other thing
i was going to mention you know the barbend podcast you guys have been doing a great job
does it when you're i've listened to probably a majority of the ones that you're doing on there
does does it do you say guest host when you host those because you host quite a few of them to be
the guest host yeah i'm like so the podcast was started up by david and he does
probably like 90 of them i would say like he does so many podcasts on there yeah um we try to
stagger them out a little bit more but yeah i would i i still consider myself the guest host
honestly i actually like that title because it's i think the podcast is something that david is so
dang good at and he is so much more
articulate than I am I'm from Missouri like dude the fact that I can put two sentences together is
just a win on its own so to be able to talk for an hour and not have people be like what the hell
is this guy saying I guess it's just I don't consider myself a true podcast person but yeah
I am the guest host I guess you could say and even though I'm on there a considerable amount, I guess,
but not as much as David. And I don't know,
I don't really see it that way to be quite honest. For me,
that's just a word.
That makes sense.
Well, now that Tanner planted the bug in your ear,
you guys can debate this out now.
I actually wanted to cause some internal strife in the bar bend.
We must eliminate podcast competitors. I actually wanted to cause some internal strife in the bar bend. Build some division.
We must eliminate podcast competitors.
Our goal is to be the only podcast.
It's our only way to survive in this space.
You guys are tearing us up from the inside out.
What are you doing?
Playing the long game.
You do a great job, and David also does a great job it's it's a really good podcast so any of our listeners that haven't checked it out i would uh strongly
recommend that they give it a listen honestly i really do appreciate that because i think
podcasts for me have always been something that i don't feel as strong in sometimes because
when you're when i'm talking to some of the guys i talk to
like so like talking to jordan feigenbaum or like eric helms these guys are so damn smart
trying trying to talk to them on a level that i feel like at least somewhat matches them in terms
of like asking the right questions it's something that i struggle with the time so i really do
appreciate you guys saying that. I mean,
I know you guys are just saying this to be nice. And once we hang up,
you guys are like, I do appreciate you making me feel good.
At least in this moment, I can at least sleep peacefully this evening.
Well, as someone that, you know,
as two guys that really have no idea what they're doing,
we're qualified to say, you know, how this goes so right you're doing just fine and that that's i appreciate that i think what you said having a
barbell medicine or eric helms or any of those guys on there uh those will probably not be
guests on the massonomics podcast also it's just it's not a path we're trying to take
they'd be in for a really rude awakening if we didn't give them much background about what It's not a path we're trying to take. Out of our league.
They'd be in for a really rude awakening if we didn't give them much background
about what they're doing if they come on.
I like how the message was literally,
hey, don't do your homework.
This podcast is about nothing for a reason.
I was like, all right.
That helped me, I guess.
Oh, man.
We do really appreciate having you on.
Is there anything else that you need to get out there
before we hang up on you here?
Not too much, man.
I could rip off some lines that I learned in Italian
from Ojem when he was here.
I learned how to tell a woman she's beautiful,
and then I also learned how to say I have diabetes
after eating so many donuts.
That's really all I got for you at this time I appreciate you guys having me on and
despite the quick talk I hope you guys are all right with the blizzard coming
ah we we're from we're South Dakota natives we deal with that it's part of our life another
day in the life that's true are you guys are you guys hockey fans by the way I'm not it's weird
how hockey is not actually that big in South Dakota. In North Dakota and Minnesota, it is both, but where we're at, it's really still more of a basketball community.
Interesting.
All right. Fair enough.
You played hockey, correct, actually. Am I right?
Yeah, I played a year in college, and then I switched to cheerleading, which is a much more masculine sport.
Sorry, we unfortunately can't relate on either of those things.
Yeah, most people
can't. It's funny when I tell folks
in the lifting community, they're like, wait, what?
Kevin Oak? Did you do? Kevin Oak was a
cheerleader, correct? So was
Dan Green. I don't know if Kevin Oak was
or Dan Green was. Maybe I'm just thinking Dan Green.
Yeah, that might be right.
Yeah, there you go.
I just tell people that and they're like, oh, all right, I get it now.
And I'm like, yes, I also deadlift 900 pounds, deadlift in the cage.
We're kind of the same.
Will you be at the Arnold, Jake?
I believe so, yeah.
I actually just talked to David about it today.
I'm trying to get out there.
I like to go every year and just make a round and see guys like yourselves
and say what's up, see how everybody's doing
hopefully I will be out there
I would say 85% right now I'm going
I might actually bring my
nutrition editor slash colleague
Nick English with me
and he's always a riot so I'll obviously invite you all
and make the connection
when we're out there
but yeah I believe I'll be there, you guys will have a booth again. You bet. Yep. We'd love to see
be slang and shorts over there. Yeah. And maybe, maybe I'll get a barb and budget and I'll,
I'll say I used it on the hotel, but I'll get some shorts. That might not be enough, but good luck.
You're right. I don't know. I think we need another round of funding to get there.
you're right I don't know I think we need another round of funding to get there yes all right thanks man we will hopefully see you there we appreciate having you on we'll catch
you later thanks Jake thanks thank you guys so much talk soon see ya
thank you Jake State Farm we uh gotta set the record straight here I don't know what he's
talking about the music thing I we were for real not pranking him there i just that and maybe our soundboard was acting up or something oh and we
would have heard that on our end i'm pretty sure if there was anything that we'll find out on the
recording yes yeah maybe we'll find out there actually is just music playing in the background
well for a second you know because when we do that my my phone is hooked up to the soundboard
and i was like do i have music playing and when he said it's post malone i'm like pretty sure i don't know what would be piping through that post malone would
be catching on there but no i sure didn't hear it i didn't either i think we're good yeah i think so
so that was jake from state farm finally finally got to talk to him wasn't that a recurring super
bowl did they bring back jake or something like that like that? Yeah. I can't even remember.
That was like two weeks ago.
I already forgot
everything that happened, Tanner.
I don't even know
who won the Super Bowl.
I don't even remember
what teams were in it.
It's a fresh year.
Everyone's undefeated now.
Did you want to go over
last week's overrated
and underrated topic?
Oh, we should really quick.
With Matt Vincent.
Before we shut her down here.
Yes.
Topic number one last week was Highland games.
Matt said underrated for sure.
I agree with him.
The people 89%.
Underrated.
That's a very strong.
That is a pretty polarizing answer.
Yeah, that's that's good.
We don't do too many things that get to the high 80s 90.
No, no, not at all. iceland he said matt said underrated and the people 84 percent wow another 80 percenter
yeah so he was right on the money on both of those for sure oh wow i didn't have i haven't
looked at these numbers yet since they were posted but valentine's day matt said overrated
guess what the number was on this? I would think like 90 probably.
Yeah, 93% overrated.
That doesn't surprise me with our audience that everyone would think that's overrated.
That is a high number.
Yeah, that is.
Okay, probably the most heated one of the bunch then, overrated, underrated.
It was sunflower seeds.
Matt said over?
I think he said overrated.
I would be very torn on this.
I don't, I think you'd have to catch.
I think it would depend on the day, my answer.
People said 56% overrated.
But I loved this.
I really liked this picture.
That was a good photo for me.
So that was the only tightly contested one there.
Tommy, should we hear from our sponsors again?
