This is episode 208, like we said.
And have you figured out yet what feels different
as I was going through those?
Is it because we're six feet apart this time?
That's true.
We are practicing our social distancing
by staying at least six
at least at bare minimum we're six feet apart we are overachieving we set a new pr on distance
tonight actually this is definitely uh uh a p uh podcast recording distance pr for us
without a doubt uh and that is because we are recording from separate households at the moment.
Which we've never done before.
Which we have never done before.
We'll find out if we do our job because, in theory, the sound should sound somewhat similar.
Not like you're on a cell phone.
Right.
It should sound mostly like it normally does.
If you've made it this far into the podcast, you know right now if that's true or completely bullshit.
If it is just one voice, then I guess we didn't get the other one recorded, which would be bad.
A one-sided conversation.
Yeah, but it's finally my monologue.
I finally got my monologue.
It feels a little bit like I'm a guest on the massonomics podcast i feel like i'm like i feel
like i'm a guest on the massonomics podcast and i'm at home even here so uh we're both this is
episode 208 with special guests tommy tofay and tanner bear it's probably the name right there
and so you said episode 208 tanner um that's kind of crazy because I didn't even realize it until you said it but
that's four years of podcasting that's this is four years on the dot and crazy that so we've
made it four years you know 52 times four that's 208 that's a little massonomics quick math led us
to that conclusion and uh crazy crazy thing and my first thought is the coronavirus is almost what took us to not be able to record an episode of the Masonomics podcast.
We've gone through a lot of things in four years, and it's that that almost tried to take us down.
Yeah, scheduling delays, working ahead, travel, all types of stuff we've worked around.
But this one has been one of the bigger challenges.
And that was just we had to record from different households.
And we are practicing social distancing.
We're being safe here.
Our very uneducated, unscientific update on the coronavirus every week is like,
well, it seems to be getting worse.
And this week was no exception again.
Well, and also it's almost we always say to be getting worse and this week was no exception again well and also it's
almost uh we always say it's getting worse and then by the time we and we anticipate that it's
going to be worse by the time this comes out and every time it comes out i think it's even worse
than we're anticipating that it was going to be at that point so i don't know by the time this comes
out hopefully podcasts still exist i was gonna, modern day society has shut down.
Electricity doesn't exist anymore.
This might not matter by the time this airs.
I'm sick of under guessing.
My assumption is that, yeah, the world will be shut down by the time this comes out in about five days.
And, you know, we're diggling right now.
you know, we're diggling right now, but it actually, it is surprising the number of businesses that are actually, um, at least where we live, even just closing their, they haven't been mandated really
yet, but they're closing their doors to, uh, walk in traffic. It's it's really walking traffic
almost isn't a thing anywhere anymore, you know? Right. Yeah. I don't think so. It really is
unprecedented though. There's just nothing nothing no comparison of anything like this
before I don't believe for anyone well and I told you you know I had to stop by your house you were
outside with your family so we could maintain a safe social distance there but yeah I I gave you
a bag full of recording equipment and I said Tanner you are the first person I've seen since
last Tuesday when I saw you and it goes back about another week before that.
So that was my, I guess that was my social interaction for the week.
Yeah, so this, that'll, but then the way we have it set up now,
you really wouldn't have to see me next week.
So that may be the last time you see a person for.
Yeah, it's like, I'm going away.
This is, this is it.
No more people for me.
Yeah. But as lonely as that may be, I'm going away. This is it. No more people for me. Yeah.
But as lonely as that may be,
can't stop me from enjoying a good can all by my own.
Tanner, okay, it's what's in that can.
I'm going to drink it.
You're going to try and guess what's in it.
Well, can you just describe to me the notes?
It's an Oki Afterbirth.
Oki Afterbirth. That sounds like a lacroix okay
yep you got that part right um makes me burn i can tell by the the sounds you made afterwards i
feel like maybe it was a uh uh lime lacroix you are correct. That was the one.
Wow, I'm good. I'm getting really better at this.
Although, us being half a city apart
and me not even having a LaCroix in front of me, or especially even
drinking one, it doesn't taste that much different than when I'm there drinking one.
It doesn't taste that much different than when I'm there drinking one. Actually, I think me talking into the microphone is really enough.
I believe it carries through the electricity to you.
I'm kind of getting that same level of a little bit of aroma.
And you are wearing AirPods while we record this,
so it's like pumping directly into your ears, Tanner.
That's true.
I hadn't said that, but I am pretty i hadn't hadn't said that but i am pretty
fancy now i have airpods you are you know i you're not you could say i'm pretty cool i don't typically
think of you as the tech guy tanner uh so when you said you had airpods i was almost a little
taken back by it and the way you know i'm not typically typically the tech guys you asked me
which ones i have like they're like there's two different versions. And I'm like, I don't know the answer to that one.
Yeah.
So I guess you've had these a while now.
This is something I thought about getting.
And to be honest, I was actually really, I was about 90% set on getting them.
And I still do want them.
But I went into the Apple store in the Mall of America probably a month ago.
And honestly, the people that were wearing AirPods almost pissed me off so much.
It almost was an anti-testimonial for me.
And I'm like, ah, no, I don't need to be one of those people.
So I had to hold off.
But probably one day they'll be mine.
Yeah, mine were a gift for my wife for my birthday.
Probably one day they'll be mine.
Yeah, mine were a gift for my wife for my birthday,
so that's probably the only way I would have ever had them is by getting them through a gift, which is a good gift
because it's something I wouldn't buy myself,
but having them, I've been enjoying them.
I also have like a $10 little one-ear Bluetooth speaker thing that I use.
And it is nicer than that.
I don't know if it's 15 times nicer than that thing.
There is that thing of diminishing returns.
Right.
But it is just like the case and stuff and the way that the case also charges
and then the case will charge the AirPods when you're not allowing a charger, that's nice.
And the way that the setup for them, I don't really know how this works.
All you do is open the case and then they're connected to your phone.
The first time I opened the case and a little thing pops up in your phone that shows you the battery life of the airpods and i was like oh that was really easy and that's what a lot of people says is is the magic is that they
just work like you don't do anything they just work and there's probably a ton of people that
listen listen to this that have airpods and they're like why are these guys wasting their
time on it but um yeah they still look pretty cool yeah um i don't know if they look cool that goes back to what you were saying like
uh you know like it depends on the on the uh setting that you're in right whether or not it
looks looks normal or appropriate that you're walking around with airpods 24 7 yeah but you
know once you own them you have to do that that's the rule I mean, otherwise, how do people know that you have them?
I've probably been going the wrong way about it.
I've only worn them at home and haven't really told.
I honestly don't know if I've told anyone that I have them.
Yeah, so you need to wear them into the office and not talk to anyone ever.
Yeah.
That's the way to do it.
I'm not against that.
I'm definitely not against that.
Well, you got something to shoot for now.
Amen. against that i'm i'm definitely not against that well you got something to shoot for now amen so looking at our looking at our four-year podcast extravaganza list here tanner um we have quite a bit planned since we just figured out that this was before you're right before we started
just like every milestone we hit we have pretty big plans here um you know episode 200 was the first time we ever had guests on the line
uh episode 208 first time we ever had ourselves as guests on the line it's just milestone after
milestone yeah i even had to set up my boom mic and stuff uh at home and to paint a picture since
um for those watching for those listening on youtube just so
you know there's no video because um i'm just sitting in my basement on my couch by myself
with uh i set up a little desk in front of me to hook my boom mic too and i have my phone propped
up against a water bottle uh and tommy and i are are facetiming while we do this so i can actually see so the
video would not be all that exciting or impressive no so there is no video i mean compared to our
regular video that's very exciting right very impressive right this is a couple steps down
from that which still isn't bad but it's still a couple steps down yeah so there is no video so but
i mean that this will be on youtube we'll probably just pop i like to
pop in a few uh memes and that sort of thing that scroll across as as this is listening so there's
probably something hilarious on the screen right now i just don't even know what it is yet yeah
that's gonna be up that's gonna be up to future tanner yeah we'll just kick that can down the
road just a little bit yep yep uh tanner have you been partaking uh have you been you know the big
thing with this kind of for the most part self-imposed quarantine on people in our area
of the country but um have you been indulging in any media of any kind worth sharing
um you mean like whether that's watching things on netflix or watching anything
you know no because i've been working on like uh an at-home project oh yeah you've been a remodel
project so that kind of is it that and work so i really not not more so than normal so i've just
been listening to uh some regular podcasts i list to listening listen
to normally uh some people that went to the arnold and stuff i've been catching up on that
just because i was interesting to hear what some people's takes were on what actually did or didn't
go on there that we missed out on um netflix no not really well nothing uh the only thing that
we've watched a little bit of my family has that's kind of interesting is it's on Netflix.
It's new and it's called like 100 people or something like that, where it's they bring in 100 people, you know, and they give them all a name and a number.
Or they give them all a number one through 100 and each episode is like 30 minutes and they do like these tests and experiments on them and like compare things.
Oh, yeah.
And they like ask questions on how they do stuff and things like that.
Is that right?
Right.
And like each episode like is looking at one specific characteristic or demographic.
Like one, they'll compare old people versus, you know, millennials versus baby boomers or something like that.
And it's not great, but it's kind of interesting.
It's kind of a funny show.
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I did see that on there.
That did look kind of interesting.
The one I was going to say that's been blowing my mind lately,
I'm only three episodes in, is Tiger King.
Oh, I don't know about that.
It is like the number of times.
Is it about Tiger Woods?
No, it's about people that,
it's about a guy that owns a,
like a, he owns like a zoo,
like a private zoo in Oklahoma
where he basically has,
he has like a hundred and some tigers.
And so it pretty much follows how crazy this guy is
and the people that want to own,
for the most part,
how crazy people are that own tigers. And every one of the people that want to own for the most part how crazy people are that own tigers
and every one of the people that they have on the show is the weirdest person like like for example
this guy he has this like bleached blonde mullet just dresses very very weird seems like the right
yeah dress is very weird tiger he's gay he has two husbands he uh also he makes a weekly tiger show where he
talks he has it's almost kind of like this i mean but he has a weekly show he puts online uh he
um has released a country album i think his country album had like 25 songs and 16 music videos
like there's just so many weird things
like the more it goes on and then it talks about the people that he buys tigers from and who they
sell them to and it follows them and they're even weirder too like it's i mean repeatedly i say to
myself like these can't be real people like if you wrote this if you made a show and put these
people in it you'd be like this is so over the top it's not even funny because they're just trying too hard to make the most outlandish thing but didn't mike tyson own a tiger
i think so yeah well that's what they talk about is like the number of people that actually own
exotic animals is is way more than you would ever guess and then they get another guy on the show
that he was supposedly the uh he was the inspiration or he claims he was the inspiration for the movie
scarface and he was
he got busted for moving
I don't know like hundreds of like a hundred million dollars
worth of cocaine or something and he would buy
his tigers from this guy and
just the whole thing is
I feel like people don't really need to
own tigers. That's kind of what I
feel like too. It's
I don't really get why
people need to own them yeah it's it's a yeah it's an odd
concept to me on top of that they are fairly dangerous too you know if that's part of it yes
exactly yeah so that's my uh that's my one recommendation I could make for all right for
people that that's been keeping me somewhat busy over here i like that uh should we talk about some
lifting things tanner we actually you know we did say a couple weeks ago that there's going to be
nothing lifting wise to talk about um and while that may be true from a competition standpoint
uh there are still a few minor things happening in the in the lifting world and maybe the first
one more timely and this this one surprised me,
and it shows how little I know and understand about manufacturing. But Rogue Fitness had a
post on Instagram the other day. And I have it pulled up here. This is what it says. It says,
medical supply update. And this is on the Rogue Fitness account. We are taking the following measures. One, product development team is working solely on medical supplies, masks, gowns, shields, and ventilators.
Number two, manufacturing.
We have begun sewing masks and will kick into full production Monday.
Next steps, we are going to make our gowns, shields, and ventilators.
We have purchased three industrial 3D printing machines
to help make parts. Number three, supply chain. We are prioritizing these raw materials and
components for these as well. Per earlier posts, we are also seeing very strong demand for our
products and we'll do our best to get those items to you in an expeditious manner. We would encourage
if you want to do this in your state to connect or to contact the local hospital and your state leadership thank you rogue team so that like blew
my mind because i'm just thinking you guys make metal stuff you know like i i don't i didn't know
rogue had like a sewing machine in the entire production line right and then to be able to
just be like oh yeah we can source raw material,
have it here,
train people and get them going on it.
I just think like, man,
the businesses I work with
or have worked with
are nowhere near that.
Like, do they have some secret
that no one else understands?
I can't wrap my head around
how you could,
you know, I guess it is worth noting where, you know, from Aberdeen, South Dakota, 3M, like I think the 3M plant here is the largest manufacturer of those.
N95 masks.
Yeah.
And they're like kicking into way over time here. Like I think it's pretty much mandatory overtime and they're hiring crazy amounts of people.
Right.
And they're working, you know, 24 hours a day around the clock nonstop.
A bunch of the members of our gym are employed by that 3M.
Our mask makers extraordinaire.
Yeah, that's very true.
But I guess where I'm going with that is that's a huge building there,
and I imagine they have very specific equipment for making those masks
and very specific procedures and people trained and that get paid pretty well
to do it.
I don't,
I mean,
obviously they're doing it,
but I don't picture how that that happens,
how they just say,
all right,
we're doing that now.
And I wondered like,
are they maybe not doing the N95 masks?
Are they maybe doing the more basic one,
you know?
Cause that N95 has the
has the filter in it doesn't it yeah i think yeah so that's that one yeah and maybe that's not as
sophisticated as i think it is either but uh i mean it would make sense to me if they were just
sewing more of just the cloth protector over your face and then right you know the strings are
however that or maybe if they're even doing i based on your post it
sounds like they're coming out with finished product but maybe that it's even with that
they could just be a piece of the puzzle you know if they're just doing a certain portion of it but
by what you said it sounds like they're you know completing product yeah so i don't know and then
yeah that is just insane yeah and then you know, you know, on top of that, two gowns, shields, ventilators, and three industrial
3D printers to make parts for it.
It's like, damn, like, I guess you have, you, you, maybe, maybe they have, it's, that's
wrong.
They probably have some type of 3D printer already.
So I guess I'm assuming they probably have someone that already knows how to run those
things and it's just, all right, get them in here and we'll do our thing.
And I'm sure they feel like they have use for that long term outside of this as well.
I'm sure that they will utilize that equipment forever.
Yeah.
Yeah, that is nuts.
And they did say at one point in time that there was like a day or so there that they were not even taking orders.
They didn't shut down the website.
You could still go on the website and add things to your cart, but it would not allow you to check out. Yeah. I have that right here.
It says we are halting our online orders for the next 24 hours. Our operations team needs to get
caught up. Thank you for your business. That's quite the predicament for a business to be in
that we're like, sorry, we have to stop taking orders. Like we have, we're so busy. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Well, I would say get that money now while you can, while people still have it because a couple of months when this thing's
still going on and everyone's drained, probably won't be placing orders as much.
Yeah, no, that's very true. We've kind of talked about that off the show a little bit too,
where it's like, man, the long-term effects of, of that on personal and small business and even like large
business finances could get crazy over that this extended period of time yeah it's it's like hard
to take your mind there and actually comprehend what could the possibilities could be you know
because it just feels like well that's like the stuff that movies are made of that's not rooted
in reality in any way no and that's what we're living in now though it is just like it is like a movie scene yeah yeah you know i just told you
you know i was watching the news and it you open it up or it comes up on tv and it says 600 died
in italy yesterday and you'd be like hmm that like if this was two months ago you'd be like
that's not real that's definitely an intro to a movie.
There's a lot of movies that have started as something like that.
But no, that's the world we live in now, I guess.
I would say two for Rogue.
I guess kudos to them for doing that.
I suppose there's a need for it. I know people are like hospitals and stuff have a shortage of that stuff.
But also they're probably not purely doing it out of the kindness of their heart i'm sure that they feel like there's money to be made for them them doing
that as well right i i'm sure there's some there's probably some benefit on the fringes somewhere you
know whether that's all right now we got these three industrial uh right 3d printers that we
can prototype stuff with that didn't really make
sense for us to get but now we have i wouldn't be surprised if there's some benefit to them
other than just purely we're making masks and not doing anything else from now on
maybe you know i don't know what that the term is is called for it when uh you know it's like a
act that the president can call in where it forces businesses to do what Rogue is doing.
I saw them talking about it.
I forgot what that's called too now.
But they haven't done that.
But obviously Rogue, for example, some businesses are choosing to do it without being told that they have to.
It's like what they did in World War II where everyone just quit making cars for three years and just make...
Where everyone turned into the Rose of the Riveter, right?
Right, yes, right? Right.
Yes, yes, exactly.
So I think what, I mean, really, so we've talked about that.
I guess the thing that I'm thinking and I'm assuming everyone else is thinking right now is what's Titan getting rebuttal with on this?
Ah.
You know.
A really shitty mask.
It's like a substandard math.
I don't even know what,
what a,
what a less than a,
just a regular mask would be.
Maybe it's just a,
it's maybe out of like a mesh material instead.
You know,
they just,
they just bought a,
instead of buying three state of the art,
uh,
uh,
industrial grade 3d printers,
they bought one.
Yeah. Not so state of the art. And they have a new, industrial grade 3D printers. They bought one.
Not so state of the art.
And they have a new intern that says he's ran one before
that assures the team he can do this.
Yeah.
He looked closely at what it looked like
Rogue was doing with their 3D printer.
Yeah.
Watched a few YouTube videos.
He's set.
He's ready to go.
Yeah.
Yes.
Should we do a, I think we're on track for some ads here quick, Tanner.
All right.
That's my kind of track.
All right.
Can you still press the money button over there?
Do we still have the money?
Can I?
Nope, that's not it.
There we go.
Okay.
I don't know why my brain can't remember that the green button is
the money button but i can still hear the money all the way from over here at my house it's big

hell yeah it's a good sponsorship team right there that's uh that's an all-star uh that's like uh
what was it the 92 the 92 dream team was that what year it was yes uh that's like that's like, what was it, the 92 Dream Team? Was that what year it was? Yes.
That's like a 92 Dream Team of sponsors right there.
It's Smash Mouth Song All-Star was about our podcast sponsors.
They knew that one day we would have this lineup of sponsors.
Smash Mouth wrote a song, and the rest is history.
Yeah.
So we've got a few different little uh
world of strength things to cover here in this last half don't we the wide world of strength
sports yeah i also wrote down another one so maybe we'll just move from one to the next as we
well damn let's get after it the first one i did you see uh so this is a big lift segment i guess right here we're in a
big lift segment right now all right did you see that chris duffin squatted a thousand pounds for
a triple yeah uh super impressive um that makes him as far as most people know the first person
to is it the first person to ever squat and deadlift a thousand pounds or is it the first person to do them for reps? Yeah, I think the caveat is for reps. Okay.
I mean, still, there can't be more than a couple that have ever even done either. And I also don't
know who has squatted a thousand pounds for a set of three. That's a very good question too.
that's a very good question too there's been doubles uh the probably the most famous is kirk kowalski there's an old video of him i think it's from like 1995 he does it for a set of two
and on the second one his spotters are gonna help him rack it and he stands there and he's like
tells it backs him off he's like no i just want to feel it i just want to feel it. I just want to feel the weight. One of the more iconic videos for sure.
That and Dan Bell, the year that we were at the cage.
Yep.
And we interviewed him on the next episode.
Was it 1,000 or was it like 1,010?
It might have been 1,000 even for a double.
Okay.
Because I remember him saying the words a grand, you know,
and I can't
remember there's a thousand uh maybe he's done that in training one other time even too i don't
know if anyone no one comes to mind that's done it other than that but i don't know that anyone's
done it for a set of three before yeah i'm but it's got to be like no one if they have
right and I know that that's
what he's been saying is that
the only person to ever
deadlift
a thousand for reps and
squat a thousand for reps
so pretty cool
we have talked to Chris we might have him
as a guest on the podcast at some point in time
once we are able to resume our regular scheduled programming.
Once order is restored to the world.
Yeah, right, right.
So we could get him on to ask him about that for sure.
And maybe just call him out and tell him his form wasn't good enough for us.
Tell him to kind of just do it over.
It was all wrong.
Yes.
But there again, that was supposed to be
some sort of he was doing that at the going to be doing that at some san diego event and yeah yeah
that's what i thought he had to take place yeah he's gonna tie it into a whole like a whole
fundraiser type thing and yeah it's gonna be a big event and because of all of this he had to uh
not do that right and it's not you don't just randomly go try to squat 1,000 for three reps.
So his training's been leading up to this for a long time.
He could take the rain check on that one.
Right, right.
I think the limits he's taking his body to in order to do it,
he's not like, all right, we'll just keep doing it for a few more months here.
Yeah, no kidding.
Yeah, I think it's kind of now or not at never now we're not at all uh-huh so that was my big lift in the big lift segment
it is one of the bigger biggest lists we've ever had a big lift segment you could say yes yes
i like that um other things on the list now you had told me something about brian shaw yeah so someone i'll look into
more this more after this podcast so my information on it now isn't that great but i just i was
talking to someone that there's recent youtube video he put out that he's going to plan on trying
to bench 700 pounds i don't know the details of that or how serious it is or when he's planning on doing that
but i that just did just strike me as interesting that he would even be making that a goal and the
reason that's interesting of course is that bench pressing is not a part of strongman strongman
typically maybe they implement it in training but they don't really care what their one rep max
bench press is.
Right.
And but I should they, you know, it's right.
Right.
Almost anything that they do.
But I was a little surprised by this one.
Yeah.
And also, I think what's really interesting, if he's planning on doing it, if he's planning on doing it in like some sort of a sanctioned powerlifting bench only that that would be
really, really cool.
That would be really cool.
That would make it way more
legit and uh yeah i think get a lot more people excited i mean i still i would still just be
excited to see him do a 700 bench press no matter what but uh i think that that doing it in the
competition shows like a certain level of seriousness to the goal right in it uh so like i
said i don't know how uh how true how accurate
this is you know how serious he is about it but if he's really serious about it i think that's
pretty cool i would like to know who the hell is going to manufacture a singlet that he's going to
wear if he's going to do that in some sort of competition yeah that that is a good question
that's a that's a lot of material that's going to be tied up there. Based on like the singlet sizing that we sell,
that would be like a 14X, I think, that he would have to wear.
Yeah, it would be.
We'll just need a bigger singlet press
or whatever they make singlets out of.
Yes.
So yeah, that's about all I know about it,
but pretty interesting.
I would like to
see that happen of course yeah uh we'll have to keep keep an eye out and see how that one unfolds
over time here the uh other thing on the list we had talked this we had talked about this off air
a few times because this this goes back maybe a little over a month now but one of the bigger
things in the lifting world that is kind of sort of flown under the radar is the fact that Wilks
basically doesn't exist anymore yeah and that's right what you're saying is is I'm kind of asking
you this because I don't know really well but is it true that like nobody uses Wilks anymore
that's just dead basically as
far as power lifting federations are concerned i you know i wouldn't be surprised if they're just
because there's so many federations right there's got to be a couple that have been like oh shit
that that ship has sailed we missed out on that but um you know as far as the bigger ones go uh
you know ipf they left that along to you know with IPS, POS, APL.
They left that along with IPF points probably about a year ago now.
And USPA, have they officially adopted DOTS?
I think so. Is that?
I think, yeah, I think so.
And I'm assuming it's DOTS.
I don't think there's any special way of saying that.
I'm assuming it is just DOTS.
DOTS, yeah.
Yeah, even when you go to open powerlifting now the
default sorting it was always wilks the default sorting is now dots and right i don't know the
science behind it it's if there's so little information on it this would be actually
probably a really uh good thing for open powerlifting to... I'm not going to get ahead of myself here.
Let's see.
Nope.
This would be a really good thing for them
to maybe provide some context and information on
on their frequently asked questions section
because I typed in like dots powerlifting
and nothing comes up.
In Google, I'm saying,
there's just a total lack of information around it, it seems like.
Well, maybe we should have Dot on as a guest on the podcast in the future and he can explain to us his formula.
Mr. Dot.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know where the name comes from.
Do you?
No.
Yeah, I don't know where the name comes from.
I don't know what is or isn't good about it.
Yeah, I don't know where the name comes from.
I don't know what is or isn't good about it.
You know, when I look at the top 10 of lifters on Open Powerlifting,
it looks like CeCe Ingram moved ahead of Steffi Cohen into the number two spot.
Stacey Burr is in number four.
I don't know if she was there before.
Yuri Belkin's the highest rated guy at number seven.
Zaheer's number 10 so like the the top 10 yeah the top 10 shifted around a little bit i guess when i go down farther like
john hack is number 14 i don't know if he was that high before eric lillybridge is down to 16 now
so like there is some shifting going on there um Isn't it, aren't the numbers similar though?
Like, isn't that the, one of the selling points is like,
so we're pretty familiar that a 700 Wilks was huge.
Like them breaking that barrier was like enormous.
Yeah.
Are the numbers kind of the same, like relevant to that?
Yeah.
So that Mariana, she's at 709 points.
So she's basically at 710.
And then Cece is at 686. Steffi's at 6 709 points so she's basically at 710 uh and then cc is at 686 stephy's at 685
675 so those are a little bit lower yeah well but i don't know how close they were to you know if we
just change it to by wilks um no stephy's wilks was 698 uh stacy burr was at 668 and third cc was at 666 so there was a little shuffling in there
you know 20 points ish for those top people i don't know enough about the formula to know like
how it's it's changing it's interesting there's others though like you're showing how it switches CC ahead of Steffi,
where these big meets like the Kern with big payouts were based off of Wilks.
So say those two performances were in the same meet
before Steffi was the one that walked away with the $25,000 in that scenario
if it was those two going to head-to-head
and it was the Wilkes formula deciding the winner.
Now they lift the exact same weights
at the exact same body weight,
and because of dots, then, okay, CeCe's better now?
Yeah, that is kind of the funny part.
That makes you be like, what?
Okay, just that alone that it's like,
okay, no, we just switched the formula,
so now she wins instead that makes me
rethink the whole thing and like wait a second do these really make sense well but you know yeah but
then again it is just the whole thing of like well you are classifying who is best by a man-made
formula right that's yes imperfect and you know yeah even this time i'm sure even the people that
like dots would also say that
this is an imperfect formula like i don't think that the perfect one will ever exist right the
only thing that is perfect is lifting within the same weight class and looking at total
right yeah i mean that that's a pretty pretty cut and dry there but um yeah like i'm looking around like in the top 50 there's a few people that i'm seeing
that move a decent amount like uh just for example if i can even find where he's at now
uh it looks like
it looks like ray william Williams moves quite a bit.
Yeah.
It's not even,
I'm not even finding them right now,
but yeah,
there's some people that are moving like 10,
15 spots I'm seeing in my quick preliminary looks here,
but yeah,
I just,
I don't know enough about it,
why it's better,
what people like more about it. I just, I don't know enough about it, why it's better, what people like more about it.
I just don't know any of those things.
I do like that the numbers are kind of similar numbers,
so it just makes sense where you say someone has 500 dots.
It's like, well, what the hell does that mean?
Yeah, like the best number isn't 1,000 now.
Right.
Well, and that's still with IPF points.
Do you know what's a good ipf point like like to me i know what like in wilks or now
dots i guess like a 400 threshold means something to me you know a 500 threshold means something i
can kind of visualize what those people are at those thresholds but like if you think about ipf
points do you have any clue if someone says they have one bajillion IPF points?
If you're like, oh, is that good or bad?
I don't know.
And I'm actually trying to look up like what I think a thousand is the best you can do.
I think it's been a long time since I even looked at that.
I'm just trying to.
And do we know exactly how they do uh you know transfer over to shroot bucks
that is the main conversion thing that people should be worried about
uh yeah i mean it looks like about a thousand is kind of in the peak um
for some reason jennifer thompson jen th Jen Thompson has like an 1100.
Uh,
Oh,
but she doesn't have a squat in there.
Uh,
I don't know.
I think,
I think,
yeah,
not high nines is probably about the best,
but again,
I don't really know.
I don't follow that formula close enough because unless you're like an,
a high level IPF competitor,
why,
right.
Why would you even care about that number?
Right. Yeah. Yeah. high level ipf competitor why right why would you even care about that number right yeah but i mean people when ipf used to still be wilks like people you know we would talk about
will will when ipf used wilks before it switched to ipf points we kind of knew what wilks was and
people would talk about wilks and like at local meets you know you would reference uh what what someone's Wilkes score was and it kind of all made sense but
I guess that's part of it just being it's just getting divided more that they're even
using separate point systems between the different federations yeah that's I my biggest thing is just
I can't find information on what dots is and why it matters.
Unless I just don't know how to use Google, but I'm doing like, I'm assuming it's this is also considered a coefficient.
I'm doing like dots coefficient.
Right.
And Google's giving me nothing.
The first when I Google dots coefficient, the first thing it gives me is wilkes coefficient which is exactly what i don't
want you know right so uh yeah we need someone we need someone to provide maybe we need to be
that resource tanner we need to do some digging here we could we could take that top spot in
google in a hurry you know haven't been around for over four years now it's hard to even remember but
we had an article at one point in time that was talking what do you even remember
we did a few we did an article or two that was discussing Wilkes coefficients where I remember
doing some writing where I had to do a little research and look up like Glassenbrenner and
like we had a little section for each one I can't remember what the article even was
I don't we've got we've got something on our website i'm gonna
dig into the archive here quick and see if let's see there's something about i think there's one
called does this wilk score make me look fat that name sounds that title sounds very familiar does
this wilk score make me look fat that might be we have a we have a wilks body weight calculator
or yeah wilks and a times body weight uh spreadsheet online actually uh we do have a
episode number 31 wtf is a wilks uh does this wilk score make me look fat wow i forgot that
existed what year what uh with with the photo of Ryan Anderson and I can't remember.
Logan.
What's the.
Yeah, that's.
Logan Frank.
No.
Yeah.
And that's not Ryan Anderson.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
It's.
Yes.
I just thought.
OK.
Now that the big picture.
Yeah.
It's not Ryan Anderson.
Derek.
Derek.
Yes.
Yep.
Yes.
And your caption says, look at the wilks on that guy
does it say what the date from that uh articles december 19th 2016 yeah a little over so that's
pretty great that's pretty crazy but it does i think talks talks about uh wilks and why it's
good or why and why it's bad i think that's kind of maybe oh there's actually there's actually quite
a bit there yeah i could see we could read that now and probably learn something from our past selves
i think i would that's uh that's uh my homework so that's when we get to four years that's what
starts to happen is uh or even you said episode 31 of the podcast is what the f is a wilks i really don't remember
that i don't either yeah i do not remember that at all that that feels like a a lifetime ago
the wilks calculator uh i remember the the excel spreadsheet of the whatever the wilks calculator
and i i also made one at one point in time that's the plate yep uh loader you know i
remember those which is like half of what the uh half of what people used as a uh as a meat
the plate loader is done you just you load in the uh a lifter flight and that you have a whole
program there yeah you have the the one basically that existed before open powerlifting came up with
their open source one yeah wow uh i was really not expecting to uh discuss about an article that we
had from over three years ago in regards to wilks yeah learn something new about massonomics every
day tanner we even we even surprise ourselves sometimes funny how that goes
so yeah really uh what we have to leave dots at is that dots is now in i don't know of anyone
uh of importance that is still using wilks maybe i'll update that article and just rename it uh
does this dots make me look fat and just replace it?
Do it like a control find of,
well,
I think we just need a dots one because,
uh,
you know,
we know we would move to the top of Google in a hurry based off of how a
lot of our articles go.
Um,
you even just a little preliminary.
We need to get the,
uh,
the dots guest in here to answer some questions for us.
That's true.
So we are getting down there on time, though, Tanner.
We're almost at the 50-minute mark, which is hard to believe.
I wonder if we should play the world's most famous podcast segment.
I think we should.
Which is obviously known as Overrated Underrated.
You know, I kind of feel like I'm the guest this week you called me in to be on this is the special uh tomahawk underscore d version
of overrated underrated that's how you know it's going to be good and i don't even have
yes stone cold knows uh i don't even have the rules sitting in front of me, but you're familiar with the rules.
I think I know them better than most.
Well, here's the test. Give me the password, and we know if you unlock the overrated, underrated. Do you know what the password to overrated, underrated is?
Dots?
No, it's not dots. It's druthers.
Oh, the other D word. Druthers. There we go. I get my D words mixed around.
Yeah, so since you said the secret phrase,
we unlock overrated and underrated.
Topic number one, overrated or underrated, the census.
The census.
In my, you know, I've watched like one YouTube video on this recently,
so I'm almost an expert now.
But from what I understand, the census is very, very important.
You can't downplay its importance to your community because the way federal money and state monies, especially federal money, maybe not state money, but especially federal money, the way that stuff gets handed out and distributed around is based pretty heavily on population and the
demographics and information about that population and if that's not accurate then
there's a good chance your community is missing out so i think that the census is underrated
i did take it have you taken your standard uh my wife filled it out for us i didn't even really
really look at it you get the letter in the mail it says go to this website you type it in it says it takes 10 to 20 minutes to do um i think it took me maybe seven so it's not a time burden
by any means well i don't have kids so it's i don't have to do that part of it but uh to do it
for my wife and i it was it was very quick i thought it was going to take longer than what it
did was it fun um you know i do have to take longer than what it did. Was it fun?
You know, I do have to admit it threw me a little bit of a curveball when it wanted to know the specifics of my ethnicity.
And outside of white, I really struggle with what the inner workings of what my ethnicities are.
Did you quickly order a 23andMe test?
So I hit pause and ordered 23andMe and gave them my DNA so that I can know who I am.
Anglo-Saxon.
Yeah, I just kind of started typing in some English nationalities, or I shouldn't say English, some European nationalities that I accurate, but I would also, outside of someone who's taken 23andMe or is only a generation or two removed from Europe, I don't know how you would really know that for sure.
Right.
Very true.
I did just see someone shared a picture with me that was of my great, great, great, great grandfather.
Really? Yeah. And he was in the civil war wow
yeah pretty interesting i do not believe my family in america goes back that far even yeah
yeah so that's pretty cool yeah yeah it's for the north too so even better you don't have to
pretend to be excited about being on the wrong side. Yes, yes, exactly.
I was like, ah, that's better.
Now I can tell people that and not be like, yeah, it's for the South.
I wasn't going to ask because I didn't want to get the wrong answer there.
Yeah.
So I'm glad you cleared that up.
Yes.
But so the census is underrated.
Underrated.
Topic number two, overrated or underrated, auto-tune.
Auto-tune. Auto-tune. You know what's kind of funny about auto-tune this is this is the one you know
probably what year 2010 ish is when it really picked up in popularity in pop music you know
that's when t-pain really started i was gonna say t-pain is um you know and everyone
started to really yeah and everyone started to really just ride this auto-tune wave and
do you have an auto-tune button you can push on the thing to make a sound you know i bet we we
probably could if we looked into it i bet this thing has the capability we just don't know it
did you know auto-tune was originally i think it was originally like built for monitoring. It was like a software algorithm or something built for monitoring earthquakes, I believe.
Like for the seismograph stuff.
And then somehow they took that technology and could apply it to like voice waves and it would smooth them out.
It was something like that.
I definitely got parts of that wrong, but it's something along those lines.
that i definitely got parts of that wrong but it's something along those lines um so the one argument that i've never understood is that all right there is the argument a lot of people make
with auto-tune is it's not how people actually sound so it's not natural not natural equals bad
that's kind of the basic formula i feel like people make so there was for years and years and years guitars and pianos
and then somewhere along the lines they made electric guitars and they made synthesizers
and electronic pianos that can make all types of noises and that was you know especially with the
electric guitar that was really where rock music and all that came into being. And I don't think a lot of people have
any issue with that. You know, an electric guitar that's heavily modified, especially when you're
talking like metal and things like that, that's not what a classical guitar sounds like in any
way, or even really an acoustic guitar, you know, that's not what they sound like.
So you've taken something that's natural and you've processed it to make a different sound.
So now you're taking people's voices and you've processed it to make a different sound. So now you're taking people's voices and you're processing it to make a different sound.
And my whole thing is like, so what?
You put a different thing.
What's wrong with that?
I guess if we're all trying to have the purest, most perfect voice, then yeah, you're masking that.
But I don't think a lot of people are really, like, are people really that upset that they're not hearing T-Pain's real true voice, you know?
Right.
And, like, nowadays, I guess, are they mad that Ariana Grande's voice sounds more perfect than what it actually is?
Like, I just don't think people actually care that much about it.
I think it was one of those things, it was like a fad to hate on for a while.
And, yeah, I think, but then it goes back, goes back like am i gonna say autotune is underrated
like i think it's one of those things it doesn't really matter yeah but i don't want to say
overrated because everyone's like oh yeah it is overrated sucks it sucks and i don't think it
really matters so i guess on that principle i'm gonna say it's underrated that's fair logic i think a lot of a lot of loops we
had to jump through yeah right okay topic number three overrated underrated kombucha
oh that stuff is overrated unless there's something i'm not getting about it that stuff
is overrated we know that for sure based on our what's in the can segment based on that one um
you know it i could i could it would
it would be tough but i could finish a whole one um i wouldn't be enjoyable it wouldn't be enjoyable
maybe there's a flavor out there that's better but uh it just i didn't find it overly refreshing
um it it was unique it was it was i would use the word challenging like it was challenging
my taste buds.
It was taking them to places they hadn't been before.
I feel like when you're describing a beverage,
if the best you can come up with is challenging, it's like... Challenging and unique.
Yeah, it's like, well...
And alcohol isn't involved.
Yeah.
Yeah, so that's...
I'm going to say I think it's overrated.
Yeah, I agree not it's not cheap
either is the thing too right you know okay topic number four overrated or underrated
my 600 pound life oh as a person that has seen way way too many of those like i i don't know if they have if there's a hundred episodes
or more i want to say i've probably seen three quarters of them unfortunately my wife loves the
show so then i'm just like why i'm just it's like the whole thing of like it's the car it's the car
wreck like i can't look away but i'm sitting here watching it um well that's what the show is based on i've got
principle i think yeah just the the shock value and the fact that they make them shower naked
and record it to do the whole thing uh it's i i think i don't i don't even know i don't even know
what you would rate that show like it's i mean it it's a it's a, if no one's seen it, they should watch it,
at least a couple, to know what that's about.
I like that old doctor man.
Doctor now.
I mean, he is the man.
He's just giving it to these people straight.
Like, hey.
And it's a pretty simple program.
This is how they all go.
The people are anywhere from 6 to almost 800 pounds.
They somehow have to get to
Houston so they can get, see the doctor. The doctor then makes them go on a no carb, like
almost no calorie diet. And if they can prove that they can stick to the diet and lose weight.
And most of these people in the month of like sticking to a diet will lose like well over a
hundred pounds. It's like, Whoa, how is that even possible but so the pounds just
start falling off once they've proven they have the discipline to stick to a diet then he will
perform the uh the uh what's the lap band or yeah yeah whatever whatever they do and uh then he'll
perform that and then from there a lot of them do get their life on the right track and turn it
around and turn into new people some of them completely just go back to their own ways.
Some of them do die even.
Did you know that?
Yeah.
There's a few that have died on the show,
which is insane to think of like how many,
how many reality shows can say we've had multiple people die.
That's right.
That's something I would assume.
They're one of the only people that can make that claim.
I don't, I want to say the show in general is overrated
because I don't think they need to make as many episodes as they did.
Also, this is the other thing that's mind-blowing.
Pretty much every person on that show,
the reason they weigh 600 pounds
is they suffered some type of sexual trauma as a child it is mind-blowing how many
people got touched and the only way as a kid that they could figure out how to cope with anything
was eating made made them feel good and you're like damn there's a lot of sexual predators out
there i guess maybe that's what i learned from that show more than anything but yeah that might
be the worst nugget hidden in the whole thing.
It is.
And it's the same thing if you ever watch Intervention.
Almost everyone was touched by someone, and they resorted to drugs.
In the case of 600-lb Live, they were touched by someone,
and they resorted to food.
Some people did grow up in abusive households too,
which you could also say they were touched, just not sexually.
They were touched in not sexually they were touching right abusive way but um yeah it's crazy how bad childhood has a lasting effect on people
who to thunk but 600 pound life i i'm gonna say it's overrated there's just too many of them
okay overrated yes i've been forced to watch a few of those too in my day.
Probably not quite that many, but it's in my fair share.
I was thinking just as you were talking there,
there could be a funny meme idea.
Maybe it's like my 600-pound bench life,
and maybe it's a picture of James Strickland
and Julius Maddox and TD Smash
and get a bunch of the 600-pound ventures,
maybe crop their faces onto some people from the show
or something like that.
There could be something there.
I'm not sure how much they would like that.
Maybe there's a way to do it so that they actually like it
so they'll share it to themselves.
So it's tasteful, right?
Yes, yes.
Keep it a little more tasteful.
This is tasteful.
James will listen to this.
Maybe he'll let us know if he's got a good idea to spin that, too.
Yeah.
A quick recap of last week's overrated and underrated.
IPAs, Jim said overrated.
This was the Jim McDonald version.
I think he did say overrated, yes.
The people said overrated by about 70-some percent, I think.
Podcast reviews, Jim said underrated.
The people said underrated.
I was excited to see that.
So excited, in fact, that I hope that those of you,
two-thirds of you think it's underrated,
you could go ahead and leave us a
podcast review because a lot of people
voted on that but we don't have as many
podcast reviews as there was and if all of those
people that felt that way left us a review
we'd have a lot of reviews exactly
so you could pop on to Apple Podcasts
and leave us a five-star review and
as a bonus treat we read it
on air usually so there you go
YouTube Fitness gym YouTube Fitness channels gyms that overrated the as a bonus treat we read it on air usually so there you go uh youtube fitness jim uh youtube
fitness channels jim said overrated the people also said overrated by by quite a bit that one
doesn't really surprise me nope costco jim said what did jim say i think he said underrated yeah
and that's what the people said too so the people like costco if only we had one right yeah i know i was kind of underrated for me because it's
like i kind of want one yeah um i i think that kind of wraps up the most of the hot topics that
we had to get to here on 208 our four year four year anniversary podcast doesn't it yeah
um uh if you would have if you
would have told me to make a guess about what we how the four year anniversary podcast would go
down and what we talk about not sure i would guess any of those things no no i wouldn't wouldn't
imagine that there'd be some rogue virus that separates us from even be able to podcast and
in our normal conditions uh the one thing we do we just got restocked on our curls
shirt so that is available in all sizes although four x's were selling pretty fast today so we're
already fairly getting fairly low on four x's and also you should just buy them because who knows
uh by the time you're hearing this what else has happened in the world uh maybe no one can
work anymore so we might just not be able to have those for a while well we are now ourselves
starting to experience some delays delays i guess yeah like on our the company that prints some of
our our stuff most importantly our lift shorts so those are going to be delayed until further
notice really that was yeah to deliver them to us so right we have to wait for those to show up now i really am worried how that's
going to affect the world economy you know not having those lift shorts into the market that
could be a problem uh but that's i think the rest of the stuff we haven't yet experienced
that we're going to have delays but that's pretty fluid
that could change tomorrow for all we know yeah uh the one thing we do have new that maybe it's
even on the website by the time we're talking about this is we have a cool new vinyl decal
coming out that we've never had before yeah and it's the lyft logo and kind of a it's kind of a
big vinyl decal it's our it's heavy duty yeah and it's it's made
to be you know it's like an indoor it's a can be used outdoors or can you know what you typically
think of people putting like on their back window on a vehicle that's what this is the quality that
this is this is outdoor vehicle quality uh you could put it on anything and it would it would
stand the test of time.
Yeah, I'm going to put mine right in the middle front of my windshield,
just like dead center.
Just to make a statement, you know?
Yes.
Let's see what the cops think about that.
Yeah, try and stop me.
Yeah.
The other thing that we've never mentioned this on the podcast,
we do have a podcast supporting membership option available on our website.
We've never really promoted that very much and probably not going to spend a ton of time talking about it.
But it is worth mentioning we do have that available.
Yeah, and it's, you know, Tanner and I were talking and it's by no means something that people need to go out and buy.
But it's just, you know know we felt like we've been doing
this for as of now four years um every week we haven't missed a week and we thought you know
we do have some pretty awesome people that might feel like supporting us in ways that maybe isn't
a t-shirt or they already have all the t-shirts or shorts or whatever right um so if you feel like being a massonomics podcast supporter we do have options
on the website to uh for the low price of three dollars a month or six dollars a month you can
help support the massonomics podcast and all things massonomics yeah it's either the la croix
tier membership or the left shorts tier membership and you take a guess at what the more yeah i think
we all know what the more expensive one is there's no secret about that and we do have you know if
you can find it on the website it's towards the bottom of our shop and um we do say in there that
you know we're brainstorming some ideas of what we can do to show the appreciation back to anyone
that um decides to contribute to those in any way.
And we've got some ideas coming, so I think we'll figure something out.
Yeah, and really, I mean, it's just, you know,
we've had people sign up for it already with almost no promotion,
and we've been, like, blown away that people would ever even do that
because that was the thing.
It's like, well, we could ask people if they want to be supporters,
but it's going to be weird when zero people do it, and that wasn't the thing. It's like, well, we could ask people if they want to be supporters, but it's going to be weird when zero people do it.
And that wasn't the case.
So we're super grateful and appreciative
for the people that have signed up.
You've already exceeded our expectations.
And anyone else that does just know that
basically that money goes back
into doing stuff for the podcast.
So we've got some ideas for that,
that we're kind of in the works on right now.
You know, video is one of them.
You know, it's kind of ironic right now.
We don't even have a video for this,
but, you know, that's a little bit of a circumstance
out of our control a little bit right now.
But, you know, just improving some of the podcast quality.
Yeah, and just investing back into it
to figure out what we can do
to just keep making this thing better because the numbers keep going up quality and yeah and just just investing back into it to figure out what we can do to uh just
keep making this thing better because uh the numbers keep going up and and we want to keep
we want to keep spreading the word about this stuff yes you know that's what the world needs
about lift shorts and lacroix's and whatever else we talk about for a hour a week yeah exactly
so that is out there it is available it's on the shop it's sort of the bottom
of the page you can check that out if you're interested this is a pretty this is a pretty
low pressure sales pitch though we're not gonna come after you too hard yeah yep uh today's show
