It's lit.
Starting point is 00:00:31 It's lit. We're good to go. All right. We are here in Massanomics studio recording episode. I don't even know what episode this is. I should probably look that up. It's like 29. I think the inaugural episode. It's our first episode.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Let's go with that. This is our first non-Tyler-only podcast without Tanner, right? It is. It is. Okay. Actually, is this the first one Tanner's ever missed? Yeah, I think so. I thought we were going to go as long as we could with saying I'm Tanner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:02 The voice you're hearing is the other DeFay. That's Ryan DeFay. Are there other DeFays? What's good? Motherfucker shows up with sound effects. I had to do it. Got to make an entrance. Are there other DeFays?
Starting point is 00:01:20 Oh, there is actually a lot of DeFays. How many brothers? Well, there's one younger brother. We have a younger brother, but we also have a whole lot of cousins a lot of cousins is your younger brother huge too he's like as tall as me he's probably about six four six five and oh over 250 for sure yeah probably closer to 300 not as handsome well well you gotta see for yourself like it depends on what you like i don't. I don't know what you're into. Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, we're just here to shoot some shit like we normally do.
Starting point is 00:01:50 We don't have any guests other than Ryan, who is basically just our proxy tanner. So I hope you got lots of really dry jokes today. Yes. All of them. People might, I don't know. People tend to say that we have a very similar voice when very similar when talking on the phone or when they can't see us so maybe the listener this could be quite the auditory treat we could just double track
Starting point is 00:02:16 everything just say all the same things at the same time so um well we're just uh gonna i got back from canada last week um i hope you narrowly dodged border i actually barely did funny story you went you entered and left you entered and left illegally both ways just to add to the excitement right i i returned legally now i'll get into this a little bit so i don't know if you guys know this but i may or may not have gotten into some nefarious activities when i was younger more than a decade ago nefarious is the word i'd use is that when you like to have sex with dead people is that oh yeah yes yeah i don't think that's what that is if that is it then i definitely didn't get very nefarious in my youth you weren't doing you were doing it wrong but uh but i didn't realize at all that canada has really really strict like
Starting point is 00:03:11 rules for getting into the country like if you've ever even gotten a dui you are considered that's the one i've heard the one i heard is like yep you had a dui just don't plan on going to canada anytime soon but i think that's only like a real issue if you are driving in because if you're driving in you got to hand them your license and passport and stuff and you're like probably pretty easily subjected to the background check right flying in one you're already in so it's kind of a big deal if they turn you away at that point yeah but two like they just kind of ask you some questions to make sure you're not smuggling drugs or bombs. So it's just like, what's your name?
Starting point is 00:03:50 What are you doing here? What's that thing in your pants? Where are you staying? Is that a banana? Are you happy to see me? You're bringing up bananas for everyone. But I didn't give a single thought to the fact that I do have a couple of things on my record
Starting point is 00:04:02 from 12, 13 years ago. I was like, until the night before I get ready to go. And then, so I do this like feverish fucking Google search for like 10 hours, just going down this rabbit hole. And it was all bad news. You know, you're hearing stories about like some 75 year old couple that gets turned
Starting point is 00:04:20 away at the border because he got caught with a joint in the eighties. And I'm like, fuck, you know, there's, is that what happened to you? I got caught with a joint in the eighties. And I'm like, fuck, you know, there's, is that what happened to you? I got caught with a joint in the eighties.
Starting point is 00:04:29 You know, I feel like this, this, and it could turn into the plot to like Harold and Kumar, like for all this. Where's Neil Patrick Harris? Was he there? So,
Starting point is 00:04:39 so I got super, super worried about it. And then, and then I get, I get, and my wife is like normally the one that worries about everything. She's like, nah, it'll be fine. And I was like, I'm pretty sure we're fucked.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Because you had a wife and kid with you. Yeah. You were with child. With child. So, exactly. So I got there and basically it was absolutely no issue at all. But I had elevated blood pressure for like 36 hours. But anyway, we got there.
Starting point is 00:05:06 It was all good. You guys know kind of how the and stuff went if you listened to last week's episode if you haven't go back and listen to it was pretty good um but we did go to their gym which i didn't get to talk about a whole lot um place called evolved strength in edmonton and it's like a fucking meatheads playground the most dopest gym you could ever imagine. It's the coolest gym I've ever been in. So many stair climbers. There was at least 50 ellipticals. No.
Starting point is 00:05:32 It was really badass props to Evolve Strength in Edmonton. But they've got like, I don't know how many. Basically, the setup is just badass shit. It's just squat racks, tons of Olympic platforms, Aleko plates, competition plates. So it's just squat racks tons of olympic platforms elaco plates competition plates so it's not necessarily a certain type of gym just kind of everything it's it's no it is like a it really is like a strength gym yeah it's not like only come here if you're a powerlifter correct correct yeah so they have like everything that's serious i guess
Starting point is 00:05:59 you could yeah yeah like tons of strongman implements they had like i fucked they had stones they had like circus dumbbells and logs and yokes and fucking just everything fun and i tore like i was so wrecked from flying and driving that i just kind of tinkered with a few things and didn't do anything real productive but yeah but it was it was a pretty cool spot um so yeah props to evolve strength and i came back to t to Tanner with this really long list of shit that we need at the gym now. And the first one was a facility eight times the size of our room. The first one was 20,000 square feet. A small request.
Starting point is 00:06:37 And then we can start buying some circus dumbbells and shit. Yeah, that's awesome. You get so used to just seeing calibrated plates only at competitions. Basically on Instagram and YouTube. They like to see that stuff. And then even the calibrated Olympic plates and everything, too. That'd be pretty cool to see. Yeah, I got really tired of converting kilos to pounds and vice versa.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Yeah, I mean, what is that? That'd get to be a lot. My buddy messaged me, and he was like, I actually thought the plates would be square too but that part was tricky because i really did have no idea what i was working with and i was like well do i put five kilos on he said i fucking it drove me nuts so i was like walking on my phone the whole time yeah times 2.2 and then you're like two i don't know if i lost it yeah we're done we've gone too far and so and then it's really hard to not be like the worst american tourist you know just like just
Starting point is 00:07:31 be like this fucking stupid really ignorant about anything that's not good for you because there really is only we have to look it up there's like the countries that don't use this the metric system it's america and isn't like one place like in africa or something like yeah like morocco or something let's find out here um i'm gonna google search it countries that so every place else is wrong literally the only ones that are that yeah basically um the only countries that do not use the metric system is the united states liberia oh they're great and burma nice burma myanmar you know we got we are in great company yeah that's that's like world superpowers right there like look out the axis of excellence yeah right but uh but yeah i still that's really really funny
Starting point is 00:08:23 but it doesn't make any fucking sense to me why we don't do it. But when I was a kid, I remember there was a time when maybe I just had a teacher that was lying. But it sounded like they were going to be like, all you need is to sit on their high horse. I'm pretty sure in the 80s, that was a thing. They were going to change it. They were going to like, yeah. I used to watch Isle of the 80s all the time when I was younger, and I think that was one of the years.
Starting point is 00:08:47 I mean, I wasn't there, but I think I heard about it. Tyler was because he's old. Tyler's old. We're not going to say how old. But I do remember that, and then it just didn't stick. I don't know what the – I think part of it is the cost of converting every single sign in America over
Starting point is 00:09:07 is hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more. And then the fact that you have to retrain millions of people to get on the same page. It's just like... And then no more quarter pounders with cheese. Yeah. We'd be stuck with the goddamn Royale. The Royale with cheese.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Yeah. That... Yeah, we'd be stuck with the goddamn Royale. The Royale with cheese. But I got in a rental car, and every time I go to another country... Just say, what was your rental car? It was a Nissan Murano, which is fucking pretty legit. Because we were talking the other day, I don't think... Is there a single Canadian auto manufacturer? I don't think they make anything i think they like grow and harvest trees or something for syrup and that's it yeah maple
Starting point is 00:09:52 bats i don't know i actually was right next to the labatt beer oh really yeah okay which apparently the i talked to a few people it's like a they were talking like it was a garbage beer or something in Canada. It's probably like... But I like Labatt Blue. I think it's kind of... The problem is it's $11 a six pack here. Oh, here, yeah. It's like an import.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Yeah, it's a fucking import. There it's like probably Keystone Light or something. Yeah, I suppose. Comparable. But I also was, my hotel was right next to a, it was called Freedom Ford. It was the dealer, car dealer. Like Fjord? Nope.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Straight up Freedom Ford. Was there a big American flag on the side? Well, I was kind of poking fun at the gals I was interviewing. I said, whoa, shit, you guys got Freedom here too? I thought we were the only ones. But, no, Nissan Murano is pretty legit though. Big props. They're our newest sponsor.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Nissan Murano. They sent me a free Nissan Murano for sale. Comes in at a cool 32 MPGs. I don't know what the kilometers per gallon. What's the liters per gallon on that thing? Leaders per... Many. Oh yeah, liters per... Lit that thing? Liters per... Many. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Liters per kilometer? There you go. LPK. Oh, that's stupid. That's not a thing. Is that a thing? I mean, they sell gas in liters. They go kilometers.
Starting point is 00:11:16 I also thought that gas... I was like, man, gas is really cheap here. It's like 88 cents a liter. It's like 33-something ounces. Wait, that's three and a half dollars. That's like 88 cents but it's like a liter yeah it's like 33 something yeah that's like a quarter of a gallon but that was all good um anyway aside from me fucking up in my international travels uh that was a good week made some friends made some friends even more enemies though maybe i don't think I made a single enemy. There's probably one.
Starting point is 00:11:47 Did you get to take in any Canadian culture? No. I had ambitions of, like, I'm going to get me some poutine. Right. We were talking about that. And then I made the mistake of I didn't look into it until it was too late. Just so everyone knows, it's poutine, not poo-tang. Like, you were after something.
Starting point is 00:12:02 You were after poutine. Chasing the poutine. Yeah. I brought my wife and kids, so I wasn't chasing any sort of tang. Poutine, the Canadian delicacy. French fries, cheese curds, and gravy. I think that's the standard base. And then there's other...
Starting point is 00:12:18 You could probably put ice cream on it. You should put ice cream on it. But there was... Yeah, I really didn't try anything out of the ordinary. It was a fast trip. And then like... Yeah, I got fucking just the longest line in customs coming back.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Oh, that's the best, isn't it? Our flights got fucked, so I had to like fly to a different airport and drive home. Did you try to smuggle in as much Canadian produce as you could? I got all the best Canadian produce. What does that mean?
Starting point is 00:12:46 So now that we've talked shit about Canada and alienated half of North America. Like two people that are listening to this that are Canadian. Anyway, Ryan's a fellow tall guy. If you can't tell. I'm catching up to you, I think. If you can't tell from listening to this that Ryan's also taller. I think I sound tall. He sounds taller than Tommy.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Definitely. Ryan, when did you start down at Masonomics? You started when Masonomics started? That was what, last October? October 2015? It's November. Okay, November. One of the eight charter members. That was what, last October, October 2015? It's November. Okay, November, yeah, November. One of the eight charter members.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Yeah, so I think I had had a membership at a different gym in town for a long time, and it was like, oh, I'd try to get there maybe twice a week, and I'll just do whatever, and didn't really have a solid plan. And for the longest time, Tommy was saying, hey, you've got to do this Jackals program. You're going to get so much stronger. And I was like, okay, I hey you got to do this this jackals program you're gonna get so much stronger and i'm just like okay i i know better than to do that i can i can just do my own stuff and i was not getting a lot of gains on the pick there yeah i was like i'm just gonna do this and it's not gonna go anywhere and then i think i was like yeah i should probably just listen to you because you know way more about this than i do and then so i think i actually lifting like with some kind of program or like idea of what i'm doing like what do you think september of last year um i think i'd
Starting point is 00:14:13 gone i think i'd gone through the eight-week program one time before we moved yeah it was probably just yeah either once or twice because yeah it hadn't been super long so i yeah i would say like actually consistently lifting for a little over a year. A little over a year. I would say a little over a year, yeah, with a program and with some goals in mind. And you, like, I remember, like, first seeing you would have videos and stuff like that, and there would be, like, who's that tall, skinny guy? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:40 I get that a lot. And then it would be, why is that tall, skinny guy lifting so much? Right. And then it became. Wish that was the case. Now the guy's getting pretty thick. I'm just, yeah, I don't know. How much weight have you put on in like a year, year and a half?
Starting point is 00:14:56 Actually, I was thinking about that today. But I think, what was it? I think, what was it? I think, so going into summer of 2015, going into summer 2015, so last summer, I remember weighing myself, I think I weighed 215 or something like that, 214, and now I weigh like 255. So in a year and a few months, like a little over a year, put on like 40 pounds. Yeah, no, I just grew like six more inches.
Starting point is 00:15:30 No, I just been eating a lot more. A lot of gravy. Has that changed a lot? Have you been eating like just a ton since this? Yeah. Yeah. Like way off the rails? Like until I have to puke.
Starting point is 00:15:42 No, it's just, I don't know. I guess for a while I was doing the like my fitness pal. Like, okay, I want to try to do, you know, this much. Like try to get like, see if I can eat, you know, 3,000 calories a day. It's like, I'm just like put in what that is, you know, just like track everything. And then it's like, well, that's not really that much. So it's like, I'll just do a little bit more. And then after a while, I was like, I'm just going to eat like the amount that I feel.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Yeah. It's like, it's just going to eat the amount. How I feel. Yeah. It's just hard to keep track of all that stuff. And I'm not like, I don't know. Not that I don't care that much about what I'm eating. It's just like I know when I'm getting enough food to be like, oh, I'm very full now. I don't need to eat anymore. And Ryan does enjoy cooking. So that makes it way easier, too. I mean, we can talk about the greats, you know, Super Chef Bobby Flay.
Starting point is 00:16:25 I mean, Guy Fieri. Guy Fieri. We'll about the greats, you know, Super Chef Bobby Flay. I mean, Guy Fieri. Guy Fieri. We'll get back to him, I think, probably later in this episode. There's a good chance we'll make full circle there. But no, I love cooking shows. What's the... Jamie Oliver, Anthony Bourdain. Action Bronson. I mean, he's just...
Starting point is 00:16:38 Action Bronson's my favorite cooking show. He's just, like, favorite everything, basically. Yeah, he's my favorite person to watch Ancient Aliens with. He's my favorite person to listen to. Green screen everything. They got the suit, like the guy in the green screen outfit. It looks cool.
Starting point is 00:16:55 My favorite thing about that show is that they don't just get a little bit stoned and watch Ancient Aliens either though. It looks like they're really, really committed to that part of the show. We probably have to back this up a step They don't just get a little bit stoned and watch ancient aliens either, though. Right. It looks like they're really, really committed to that part of the show. We'll have to back this up a step for everyone else in the world that has no idea what we're talking about. Well, they might not even know what ancient aliens is.
Starting point is 00:17:14 So there's a lot that goes into understanding what's going on. So there's several parts here. First being, there's a TV show on TLC. Was it TLC or History Channel? History Channel. History Channel called Ancient Aliens. Which means it's 100% factual because it's on the History Channel. It's many crazy people.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Not just one. And they're talking about their insane theories for what aliens have done. I mean, to the point where it's like, yeah, I guess if you want to take that jump, yeah, these are actually pretty funny to listen to. It's like the guy with the big hair. I think his name is george yeah he's like he's like the guy in the memes where you see like whatever aliens yeah whatever so yeah so first that show had to come into existence while this is going on a rapper is coming up named action bronson action bronson is about five foot
Starting point is 00:17:59 eight like 345 yeah he's with an enormous beard and awesome rapper just a crazy personality all around was a chef at one time he has a lot of kind of diverse talents yeah it's like a TV
Starting point is 00:18:13 I guess you could call it a TV show it's on TV actually but it started out on YouTube so yeah he started rapping and then from there he kind of
Starting point is 00:18:20 got this deal with Vice TV Vice Network where he started like kind of doing his own cooking show called fuck that's delicious that's delicious which is a great one it's kind of like if all of the people on food network could actually just do a tv show where they could just be bros with everyone and actually say what they wanted if bobby flay was cool or it's like if anthony
Starting point is 00:18:42 bourdain was a rapper yeah i would say yeah i would say it's pretty if Anthony Bourdain was a rapper. Yeah, I would say it's pretty close. Because he just doesn't care. It's like that where he's traveling, meeting new people, and just kind of doing whatever. It's not like it's just some big heavy guy eating food. You can tell his experience as a chef paid off because he understands all these foreign dishes and cuisine and what goes into making them. And he can talk. He can sit down and talk shop with the chefs and make some sense that's what it's that's what it's all about so now to bring this back all these things come together he now makes a tv show called what
Starting point is 00:19:14 are they traveling the stars traveling the stars where with or what is it watch ancient aliens with action bronson yeah it's like yeah and they sit in a huge green screen room watching Ancient Aliens, Action Bronson, and usually like a crew of guys, whether it's like... Yeah, they'll have like... They've had like Odd Future
Starting point is 00:19:31 and Tyler, the Creator. Yeah, Dirt Nasty has been on there. It's usually just different rappers. Andy Milonakis. They had Rob Van Dam, the wrestler.
Starting point is 00:19:39 He was on like a week or two ago. And then they'll have like The Alchemist or like some other producer like just sitting there making like music, like playing music playing music yeah they're sitting in a green screen room with just they're stoned out of their minds watching ancient aliens they commit really hard to getting just fully barbecued yeah they're good at their job though they're going like they
Starting point is 00:19:59 go so hard and so that then they'll get like they'll get like catered food brought in and it's like the most incredible stuff. And they'll have someone else come in. One episode, they were getting like manicures. Yeah, massages. Manicures, massages. It's like, God, that's like the best show. So Action, if you're hiring, we'll all drop the Mastanomics podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Well, we could do a podcast while they're doing that, too. You know, there's nothing to stop them. Yeah, I suppose. Yeah, we could Mastanomics while watching Ancient that, too. You know, there's no. Yeah, I suppose. Yeah, we could massonomics while watching ancient aliens submit our bodies. We may have to move to a different state with some lighter, lighter laws. Yeah, that's. Yeah. But where the hell did we get on? I think we were talking about cooking food.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Oh, so. So the action Bronson's everyone's favorite chef yeah now we're going to talk about something far less interesting let's talk about me making breakfast with with ryan defay but no i don't i think when i first started whatever lifting before that it was like oh i'm gonna eat maybe you know two times a day pretty inconsistently not really even like care about what i was eating but i don't know i guess listing just you know eat breakfast every day lunch supper and just eat as much as you humanly can i guess that is hit the whole milk hard yeah we. We've. Ryan's really. How many.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Tyler, how many. You drink milk, right? I drink milk. How much do you go through? I go through. It's a little confusing because I have like a mix now of what I've been doing. Oh, do you have like a. You pour it in like one of those water cooler things. No.
Starting point is 00:21:36 No. No. So I do. I still drink almond milk a lot because it's just delicious. Really? Yeah. I love it. But for my gains, I drink whole milk. Yeah. That's just delicious. Really? Yeah, I love it. But for my gains, I drink whole milk.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Yeah, that's the best. So every week I go through, like, it's hard because I also have a wife and child in the house. You just make them drink their own, though. Yeah, get it figured out. But I drink, for sure, every week two gallons of whole milk. And we also go through, in the house, another three gallons of almond milk.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Right. Dang, that's pretty good. If I'm going pretty hard, like trying to drink a lot, I can drink one of those things a day. Yeah. The old go-mad, gallon of milk a day. Yeah. Yeah. It's good, though.
Starting point is 00:22:19 I love milk. I mean, if I didn't like it, it would be very... And it's easy calories. I think like... A gallon of milk. I mean, if I didn't like it, it would be very – and it's easy calories. I think like – A gallon of milk. Well, eight ounces of whole milk is like 150 calories, and usually in a meal, you know, it's like 24 ounces to 32 ounces of milk. So it's like that's at least 600 calories.
Starting point is 00:22:38 That is one of the classic ways to get in more calories is just through liquid milk. You don't feel as full when you're drinking. Well, it's not like garbage calories. You know what I mean? It full when you're drinking. It's not like garbage calories. It's fat from an animal. It's not like fat and protein. Speaking of milk, I had a Telester Eye today. True Life on MTV. I feel like it disappeared for a while, but they're bringing it back again.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Which is actually pretty good programming for an MTV standard. It doesn't have anything to do with music. It's almost like documentaries of random subcultures that are going on in America. And just watching TV the other day, and there is this rather large lady, let's say pushing 300.
Starting point is 00:23:16 She ain't a lady unless she's 280, maybe. She was definitely a lady. And the whole thing was like true life, like I'm trying to be like a like a heavyweight overweight model or something like that and when i say model i mean that term in the loosest way because she was i i turned the show on and she's just there's this lady drinking milk i'm like oh okay whatever and she's like well i'm really lactose intolerant so this really gets me going i'm like what is she talking about and all of a sudden the, the next frame, she is, like I said, a very heavy lady.
Starting point is 00:23:49 She's in her bed. She has the tripod filming her in her lingerie and just ripping the sickest farts. And there's a lot of guys, apparently, that get off on stuff like that. And she's just in every pose. The craziest poses that you would ever imagine for blowing a fart out and she just does that for like 10 minutes and because she's lactose intolerant she can just really get these things built up yeah so how much was your membership to her website it's reasonable it's a fair price for a fair service one of the things I noticed too
Starting point is 00:24:25 is like I heard that goats milk but you're supposed to get raw unpasteurized goats milk raw goats milk is supposed to be the key to gain like that's it and if you want to just
Starting point is 00:24:40 really bulk up and get strong commit to a gallon of raw goats milk you to a gallon of raw goat's milk. You got a lot of grass. I do have a lot of grass. Is that like Beer Fest when they need a gallon of ram's piss? Similar principle. After you can chug that, you can chug anything.
Starting point is 00:24:56 I was in Walmart. Obviously, they don't have raw milk of any kind. They don't sell it like a store. Lincoln always accuses my whole milk of being goat's milk because he thinks it just tastes disgusting but uh so he uh i was there and i'll also hear this lady just yelling like into the cooler at the grocery store yelling back in there like i need one more of the goat's milk. I was like, they have fucking goat's milk here? Sure enough, they
Starting point is 00:25:27 did, but this lady took the last jug of it. I was like, I haven't tried it. Have you had goat's milk either? I think I've had goat cheese. I'm pretty sure I've had goat's cheese. I believe I have. Next time I'm there, I'm going to try some goat's milk.
Starting point is 00:25:43 Yeah, bring it. If they made goat's chocolate milk, I'd be in. Sounds like a really exotic one. I mean, I wonder if you'd even be able to tell the difference. Expand your palate with goat's chocolate milk. Yeah. Like, why is it better, though? You said it's like the secret to get-
Starting point is 00:25:57 I have no idea. Is it just so calorie dense or what? I just heard from- Yeah, I suppose. From all that garbage that goats eat. They like to eat metal cans. Like siding off a house. Yeah, that's what we're- They like to eat metal cans. Like sliding off a house. Spokes and dirt.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Spokes and dirt. Grass and debris. Other goat poop. Yeah. So also in a totally unrelated deal. I think we got off track again. Did we get off track? Let's get off track even more.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Let's get way off track. We'd better not. This is going to go way off track. Well, okay. Have you guys seen the show Westworld on HBO yet? No, my friend. Motherfucker. Tell me to watch it.
Starting point is 00:26:28 My friend Pat told me to watch it. We can't even start. We'll get back to this. Watch it. There's two episodes out now. He said it's like a sci-fi, like Western, but it's not. No, not really. You have to watch it.
Starting point is 00:26:38 He tried to explain it to me, and I didn't really get it. We can't even start. Everybody that's listening. Westworld. Westworld. Westworld. That's on HBO. HBO Go.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Watch that shit. One line premise? One line premise, yes. Virtual reality, sort of. Except it's mostly like robots that are also people, some. And it's kind of like a theme park situation. Think Jurassic. It's kind of a run-off sentence. Think Jurassic. It's like a cross between Wild Wild West and I,
Starting point is 00:27:05 Robot. Not really. Yeah. Where is, where is Will Smith? Okay, Big Evil Spider. Think Ex Machina,
Starting point is 00:27:13 I, Robot, The Matrix, and General Loveless with the Big Evil Spider. And, how to lose a guy, how to lose a guy in 10 days.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Wild Wild West. And all the McConaughey movies. Okay. No, it's really good. I can't recommend enough, but we can't go any further because I have nobody to bounce anything off of. So it's awesome. You should watch it. We could act like we know.
Starting point is 00:27:35 That could be fun. It's got Anthony Hopkins in it. Okay. Oh, does he have the little mask on? He just talks about... Do they wheel him out in his uh in his hannibal lecter cart he just eats somebody's face off to start it i'm not talking with a i'm not he has a straight jacket on you guys anymore weren't we talking the other day about someone wearing a straight jacket oh yeah what was that at the gym or something yeah i don't know wheeling somebody in on a i think maybe larry it was
Starting point is 00:28:04 probably direct it was probably directed at Larry. He wasn't there to defend himself. Also, one of our fellow... What do we call them? We went over this last week. We call each other... Is it mass leads? Mass holes.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Mass turbaders. Someone from the gym. Cole got himself a custom fucking weightlifting belt. Oh, and did he? It is beautiful. That is like fucking purple velvet with green, like... Lime green. Lime green.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Old English text. Old English text that says... The old English proverb. You gotta want it. A tale as old as time. About how bad you have to want it. And to prove how serious it is, there's two exclamation points. Is there?
Starting point is 00:28:54 I didn't know. There's two. I guess it didn't even look that weird to me. I was like, yeah, okay. It's because it just seems so right. Yeah. So where did he get that? Do you know where he got that made at?
Starting point is 00:29:05 I should look that up. That'd be the old Pioneer. Pioneer. That's what I have. I have a Pioneer belt. Pioneer. They're awesome. They're the plug.
Starting point is 00:29:11 They're the plug. What's it cost to have something like that made? You know, it depends a lot. Base level, mine is 80. So I think if you were to get, it depends. Did you have yours customized, though? No. No?
Starting point is 00:29:22 Yeah, you can do. I picked the color, and that was it. You can do color on the color, and that was it. So it's custom color. You can do color on the inside, color on the outside. It depends on the thickness you want to go with. You can get the buckle. I'm sure the text probably costs, depending on how much text you have, there's probably different prices there.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Okay. But, like, Ryan, what do you guys have, the 10 millimeter? I have, yes, the 10 millimeter. 10 millimeter, single prong. Single prong. He has the double prong, which I think might think they'll cost the same yeah i'm not i don't really know so that's basically that one of the top left yeah that's the one and then you can start building from there once you click on it suede but it's like pimp my ride oh yeah you get ish work in the interior
Starting point is 00:30:00 hit it with that suede, yo. So you can get, okay, okay, here we go. So you can get messages on the outside of the belt. Or on the inside. Or on the inside. $35 to add to the outside. Okay, that's not bad. It's not terrible. But is it on the loop?
Starting point is 00:30:16 That's what Ross has a message on the loop. He's got his name on the loop, too, right? Yes. $10 for the name on the loop. You can add a picture for $50. Yeah, you can put a logo on. They'll embroider a logo in there. Is it a...
Starting point is 00:30:28 Okay. Yeah, that's what they mean by pictures. It's a logo. Oh, okay. Damn it. Yeah, they'll embroider... It would be awesome if you could just get a picture of your cats. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:37 Yeah, that would be great. You have cats. You should... I have cats. They started peeing in the house now. They're somewhere out here. That's fucking pretty sweet. Powder... Yeah, you can get the buckle powder coated. the house now. There's somewhere out here. That's fucking pretty sweet. Powder.
Starting point is 00:30:46 You can get the buckle powder coated. Wait a minute. What's going on here? Oh, what type of? Oh, okay. You can pick your tip. Pick your tip. You guys prefer a tapered tip?
Starting point is 00:30:57 I do like the taper. Ryan has the taper and Ross has the round. Besides that, I think they're exactly the same belt, which, yeah, they're both awesome. The taper, you can wrap your hand around it a little easier. More user-friendly, I guess you could say. Functionally, they're the exact same thing. Functionality slides in a little easier. You're going to lift the exact same in either one, so that is purely preference.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Either way, a belt does not do anything. No, I'm just kidding. Speaking of the suede, I found these Olympiclympic lifting shoes you see these classics yeah these are the this position usa.com and they have fucking blue suede olympic lifting shoes and they are fucking beautiful they're like the true wood heel they are expensive yeah yeah like 200 bucks but like they are fucking really sexy. The blue suede is pretty cool. So those are dancing shoes or what are those? Tap.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Tap, sorry. These ones, so this is the picture in the middle. If you're listening to this podcast, go to positionusa.com. Follow along with us. They're also our biggest sponsor just behind the Nissan Murano. Yes, they are out there. And Applebee's, your friendly neighborhood bar and grill. Yep.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Yes. And Four Loko the start to any great night honestly I prefer juice two O's I think the J is a soft J I think it's hoose
Starting point is 00:32:16 is what I usually call it hoose but anyway but these ones have that like really wide base too they look pretty look pretty fly but I like
Starting point is 00:32:23 I really my next pair of Olympic lifting shoes I want to get with the wood heel, just because it's like a classic look. But have you guys seen the, there's a brand called No Bull. Oh, yeah. Have you seen theirs? I follow some of their female athletes they sponsor. I don't think I've even heard of these.
Starting point is 00:32:40 They're like CrossFit. It's basically like CrossFit shoes, but they're supposed to... I don't understand the concept. I'm not like shitting on their brand or anything like that, but they have like... I know what it is. So it's supposed to be like no-nonsense stuff, but it's still fucking $250 shoes. Do they make apparel and stuff too? Yeah. I've seen that pop up.
Starting point is 00:33:00 But these lifting shoes look like fucking dress shoes to me. Those look cool. I think those are cool. I think they... I don't know if they... I would never buy them though. I would never buy them. Those look cool. I think those are cool. I think they do. I don't know. I would never buy them, though. I would never buy them. I don't think I would ever buy them.
Starting point is 00:33:09 I wouldn't want to wear them. Unless they have, maybe they'll come out with different colors. Yeah. But that brown, like, I like the wood heel, but these look like dress shoes. Yeah. Like, you could wear them with slacks. The brown and the black together is always kind of. Maybe if they were all black, they would look better.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Or all just, all color. They just, they look like fucking loafers. Put like three stripes on those or like a swoosh. Or a little penny in the front. Yeah. Oh, a penny out of my loafers. I don't know. They look different.
Starting point is 00:33:33 I mean, they look different. They definitely look different. I don't think I'll buy a pair. But if Noble wants to sponsor the podcast, I'll wear them. Wear them to work. I'll wear them to work. You'll be the only HVAC man in the business. I'm rocking a pair of lifters.
Starting point is 00:33:47 The stone durability test. Yeah, that's just what I need to do is be taller so I hit my head while I'm in people's basements even more than I already do. Isn't that the worst? Fuck. Yeah, that happens to me too. Speaking of tall, Ryan, you're an exceptional deadlifter. Okay. And I mean, all things considered. But I fucking always like to use the excuse that I'm not very good at deadlifting because I'm tall.
Starting point is 00:34:12 Yeah. And then Ryan's really good at deadlifting. So I have to make sure that when I'm using that excuse, it's not around Ryan and not around anybody that's going to watch Ryan deadlift. That's also tall. Yeah. Yeah, people use that. It's funny, too. Oh, you're tall, your arms are long.
Starting point is 00:34:27 But then, like, it's also, like, people that are short are really good at deadlifting. And then there's also people that are pretty average that are really good at deadlifting. Yeah. So I don't know if there's any sort of... It's funny how deadlifting goes with that, too, because I remember at one point watching a video of Ed Cohn
Starting point is 00:34:43 talking about how, like, oh, yeah, the first time I ever deadlifted, I of Ed Cohn talking about how like, oh yeah, the first time I ever deadlifted, I don't know. I had like, started with two plates, then went to three, did three for a while. I think I might have even done four plates. It's like, okay, you did four plates the first time you ever deadlifted. I'm like thinking like, okay, that just seems completely insane, whatever. But I remember being at the gym one night. I was doing a deadlift set, and that was when I kind of first talked Ryan into doing more powerlifting things. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:08 And I'm like, well, you can just try and hop in on deadlift here with me. And I was doing – I think you were warming up. Yeah, I think at the time I was warming up, and I had three plates on. Oh, yeah, I had one plate on. We did that because you're like, hey, try this. But, yeah, I had one plate on. You did the warm-up.
Starting point is 00:35:21 And I was doing sumo, and you just tried sumo out at the time. Yeah, I'd never done conventional sumo. Went to two plates. You you did that i'm like well i'm gonna i'm gonna hop up to three plates here you can try that and uh you just double overhand repped out three plates on a crappy y bar with like zero knurling just ripped it up like five reps like nothing and uh a couple of the other guys that go to the gym i think it's actually big shane he's like oh ryan didn't know you've been dead lifting how long has that been going on today it's like right there just now and and so then uh yeah i just uh worked through two sets of 315 and i think it was within a month or within a month less than a month you had done four plates yeah no i remember
Starting point is 00:35:59 i remember like yeah probably a week or a couple later, you were just working up to maybe a heavy single and I did four or five and it was, it was pretty easy. Not bad. And then you're like, do four 55 and it was like, I'll just above the knee. Yeah. Like you had to drop it. I couldn't get it. And then probably it was when we moved over to the other gym. Um, one of the first would have been, yeah, it would have been last November.
Starting point is 00:36:23 So if I remember correctly, that first time you deadlifted was probably like in may ish yeah i would say maybe end of april yeah so somewhere in there so you're talking may june july august september october november six six seven ish months um then you had your first what you deadlift 515 in there 505 yeah because i i did like 405 the first time then the next jump jump was 455. And I'm like, I don't want to do five plates. I'm like, I want to do like over 500. So I did 505, like another 50-pound jump. So yeah, in a matter of about seven months, you went from never deadlifting to deadlifting 500 pounds.
Starting point is 00:36:57 505. And since progress did slow a little bit. Yeah, which is to be expected. But I was like, I was. But would you hit, you just PR'd here recently. Would you hit there? 550. So you're nearly another 50 pounds.
Starting point is 00:37:09 And that was after we had both done heavy sets, too. So I think... I think, too, if you were at a meet, it'd be higher than that. Yeah, I think I could. Because you did your two week 8 sets before that. No, it wasn't week 8. You had a decently heavy set.
Starting point is 00:37:24 You were doing sets of 440 or 450 or something like that. Which wasn't week eight you had a decently heavy set you were doing sets of 40 or 450 which isn't like sets either i mean you're sure the only reason i did is because you did it and the only reason that i think you did is because tanner's like hey yeah pretty much try to get a single so i was like hey he's a pussy and lift that fuck i was like hey if he's if he's gonna do it i'm gonna do it too and it was it was good but yeah like the the single at the old gym i think um yeah hit hit it uh 505 no belt or anything and at that point i had never even lifted with a belt and i don't i think that's pretty uncommon i don't know like it wasn't even a thing like hey put a belt on i was like i'm just gonna do this the way i did it before and yeah yeah i mean i basically can't do anything without a belt like i'm that
Starting point is 00:38:06 guy that's like i i fucking i will have my belt on when i get above 225 yeah the belt goes on and now i don't think i knew how to use it before but now it's like yeah like that's a must like after three plates it's like yeah put the belt on it's just gonna help you it's not gonna yeah it's like how i lift which is probably on. It's just going to help you. It's not going to hurt you at all. Yeah, it's like how I lift. No. Which is probably not good. A guy should probably know how to brace his core without wearing a belt. But I have a belt, so I wear it when I lift.
Starting point is 00:38:35 I think another thing that helps me is I can stick out my belly so far. Tyler, have you ever seen this? No, let's see it. Maybe stand up. I'll stand up real quick. All right. Hang on a second. I'll stand up real quick. All right. So he's... Hang on a second.
Starting point is 00:38:48 I have to take... I'll take this. I'll put this in the show notes if I have permission from Ryan. Okay, so we're going to take... Turn sideways. So that's like normal. All right, that's normal. And then...
Starting point is 00:38:58 Hang on a second. My phone's doing some shit. Okay, go ahead. So that's normal. And go the distance. That's pretty serious. Your belt's got some work to do. There's a lot of pushing power right there.
Starting point is 00:39:12 That's like abdominal pressure at its finest. I think that's where the strength comes from. The belly power. I might be able to do that more. You guys want to see this? Should I also take pictures of this? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:25 You might as well, huh? Yeah. I'll give you my phone. For the show notes, someone's expecting. It'll just be all three of us with bellies sticking out. All right. I'll get over in the same way. Yep.
Starting point is 00:39:37 So, Tyler, it's kind of weird, but he's taking his pants off first to show us. Yeah, like we said, shirt. Belly, not pants. That's normally got picture one. Yep. Yes. And now picture two. There it is.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Oh, there's... All right. That's power. That's... He has a pretty good power belly there. That's a power belly. He has a power belly. With the right technique, you could be the best, Tyler.
Starting point is 00:39:59 You know, that belly is missing a gallon of milk from it. Yeah. That would really... That's true. Even... Or like a 12-pack of Labap's Blue. When I was a kid, when I was skinny, that was one thing I used to always be able to do
Starting point is 00:40:10 was just hammer my gut out there. Could you guys ever do the tubby roll where you could make it look like it? I never could. I remember you could. Yeah, I could always. And I just kind of think about it now. Yeah, it doesn't feel good already.
Starting point is 00:40:22 It was harder, though. It's harder now than it was when I had a little extra around the midriff. Yeah, so your power belly is the secret to your deadlift. Is that it? It is everything. It is my everything. And now you haven't done any competitions yet. Do you plan on competing here?
Starting point is 00:40:42 No, I did one. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's right. You did the state one. That's right. Last that last yeah last march 2016 that was the first one i was like going into that i was like oh i don't know if i'm gonna do it like i kind of went back and forth and then just thinking like well if i can get at least like a thousand pound total i'll feel like okay about myself so i was like kind of had an idea what i could do on all three lifts and then what was it like four or five of us from the like you guys are already going like four or five people from the gym so i was like well even if i don't do that great or whatever there's a lot of other people there going so it'll be pretty comfortable
Starting point is 00:41:21 yeah like i don't know if i would ever really want to do a first powerlifting meet, like, by yourself. Like, I don't know if I could ask somebody to do that. Like, at least make friends with somebody that you would know. But, yeah, it was good. I'd, yeah, totally plan on doing the same one more. What was your total? Like, 11? 11.35.
Starting point is 00:41:38 I think it was a 5.13 deadlift, 387 squat. It's all kilos, so these numbers, i'm not making these numbers up that's what they are like 387 squat or 386 squat and then 237 bench but we won't talk about that yeah and i would guess even to date right now so that was what eight months ago nine months ago yeah i would guess your total is already close to 200 pounds more than that probably i think i could well yeah i would say so. So either way, things are still moving up pretty fast. At that point, you hadn't even been lifting in the gym for –
Starting point is 00:42:12 Not in six months. Yeah. Well, no. Well, you'd been in mass economics about six months. So really very, very, very limited powerlifting experience going into that. You're going to compete here this spring again then? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I plan on it.
Starting point is 00:42:27 And I think there's a push-pull in December. Yeah, I heard about that too. That could be kind of fun, but I don't know. I don't know. It's always fun to get the boys together. As an outsider, what's the point of the push-pull meets? I don't know. It's just if you can't squat.
Starting point is 00:42:44 I think it's because a lot of people just't like squat i think that's what it is which for me it's not really advantageous because squat is like what i consider one of my best lifts so like to be leaving that one out yeah it it kind of loses some of the appeal to me but yeah i can also see how it'd be a lot easier on your body because i mean benching you don't get sore from just doing a few singles on bench and then just to rep out or just to do a couple singles on deadlift like that's not all that taxing either yeah I agree like if it's a push pull it might as well just be a deadlift only competition as far as I'm concerned but they do also have you just bench only too so yeah that's interesting as
Starting point is 00:43:21 my interests are though but now are those still still done by like the same federation? Well, I don't think they're actually under, I think they do them. That's a good question. I think they do them like to USAPL standards, but. It's not like a sanction. No, no. Because they don't do like just push pull meets for that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:40 Interesting. For the specialists out there. That's right. Very specialized. And then there's a curl contest after that in the parking lot i actually did you know i was listening to a there was a there actually used to be those things do they do strict curl competition cory gregory had on one of his podcasts he was talking about that they were like back in the day he would do these these curl competitions for like max weight and shit like
Starting point is 00:44:03 that i think and they said and shit like that. I think now... And they said that... Like standing up or in a... Standing up, I think. And they were like barbell curls. But he said that when he was going to get trained by... Fuck. I want to say that it was like...
Starting point is 00:44:18 I want to say it was Louie Simmons. I could be out of line, but it was someone who's like a legit badass in the powerlifting world. He came up to me and said, Corey, I'll gladly coach you. We'll help you. You get real strong. It'll be good. But if you ever do another one of those fucking curl competitions, I'm going to kick your ass.
Starting point is 00:44:37 Yeah. And I think, if I remember correctly, a couple months ago, CT Fletcher on Instagram, I saw him promoting stuff, like trying to bring back strict curl competitions, which if someone's going to bring it back, I saw him promoting stuff like trying to bring back strict curl competitions, which if someone's going to bring it back, that's the guy that's going to bring it back.
Starting point is 00:44:50 And so I think he was like hosting an event for that. I would imagine he had some type of, I don't follow him too closely, but I think that that is or was a thing at one point for sure.
Starting point is 00:45:00 I feel like if CT Fletcher wanted to bring anything back, it's going to come back. He could make it happen. If CT Fletcher's like, we're going to bring back the Holocaust, you're like, all right, dude, just stop yelling. That guy starts yelling, it's going to happen. Stop fucking yelling. The Samuel L. Jackson of the lifting community.
Starting point is 00:45:16 Of muscle. Well, what else do we have to cover this week, guys? Are we still just talking about me I just came here because I thought we were going to talk about me
Starting point is 00:45:28 the whole time I only really concern myself with things that are like kind of that's all we're here we came here
Starting point is 00:45:35 with no plan we're like well we need to fill in bring your brother Ryan make it interesting do you have any more sound effects I think that's it
Starting point is 00:45:43 well actually I have these on Spotify. We've gone to some deep corners of Spotify before. Yeah, like Ultimate Fart Sounds, I think, is the one. We found the Fart Christmas soundtrack, where it's all of your favorite Christmas songs made with nothing but fart noises. Yeah, we'll let the viewers describe that.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Really on its own, it's not that funny, but just wait until you come home from the bar at like 3 let the viewers describe that. You know, really on its own, it's not that funny, but just wait until you come home from the bar at like 3.30 in the morning. You can't stop laughing. And it is the greatest thing ever made. Yeah. So it's Christmas fart sounds? I think we just typed in fart on Spotify and found it that way because, you know, that's really high-functioning brain stuff.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Here we go. Is this it? Is this it? I think it might be. What the? Yep. This is it. There's, like, water in the background.
Starting point is 00:46:47 They're like... Yeah, this is entertainment, okay? There's a lot of third grade guys out there. There's third grade kids that are just... Oh, that is funny. I don't know what's funnier. The fact that that exists. Or that we think it's funny.
Starting point is 00:47:07 The fact that it's on Spotify. Or the fact that you guys typed in fart on Spotify. I want to see what's down this rabbit hole. Maybe a combination of all three. You know, there is some really weird stuff on Spotify. If you just type in words, just trying to see what they're going to return. Have you ever tried to just search for a a couple like other like other people's playlists on spotify you notice how much of a motherfucker that is it's tough it's impossible so like we we've got we had done a
Starting point is 00:47:33 deal a while back where we've posted like um like uh tommy's got his massonomics um like workout playlist it's called massonomics so isn't that the same one no it's different it'll be it'll be like under my profile okay but but like so so then then i put together my one that's metal and one that's gangster rap and then tanner has you have like a like a rap rock one yeah only maybe just only no i do not okay well but um but but then like so i'll be like at the at another gym working out with somebody and it's like, well, just search for it. You can't fucking search for it. And then they say, well, you can just search for that person's username, but you can't do that. It's tough.
Starting point is 00:48:15 The search, unless it's like a for sure an artist's name, like the playlist interactivity on Spotify is bullshit. The best thing is just once you find it, to just follow that playlist so that you basically have it saved. So what I had to do was to play it, because I don't like trying to link my phone to somebody else's Bluetooth shit. Yeah, that's always a pain in the ass. But it's like that's what he wanted to play.
Starting point is 00:48:38 So I had to text him a link to it from mine, and then he had to pull it up and then could see it and then follow it. But fucking Spotify. Spotify does not sponsor this podcast. You know they have podcasts on Spotify, but not ours? What the hell? That's probably a technical error on our side. No, I did some looking into it, actually.
Starting point is 00:49:02 It's not very inclusive. I've never heard of anyone using Spotify as a podcast player. I never have either, which you would think that you could. It makes sense. I mean, it's kind of your all-in-one audio solution. You know, you'd think that you... There are podcasts on there, but it's not all of them. There's also audiobooks.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Did you know that? Yes, I listened to them. Are there any good ones? A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. It's okay goes deep what was the one we listened to the one day oh they got a lot of hp lovecraft if you like um katulu and all yeah like sci-fi horror before it was sci-fi horror we're talking monsters late 1800s early 1900s yeah like before Allan Poe. Yeah, pretty creative guy, but just very weird. So it's really great to listen to on a road trip to Colorado. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I got a good 12-hour. I'm like, I really want to listen to this. And I looked over, and I was driving, and Tommy was asleep. I'm like, okay, I'm going to play it now. There you go. And then 10 minutes later, he woke up and was like, God, do we have to listen to this? I guess not.
Starting point is 00:50:02 Yeah. It's like five minutes in, you realized that people do not talk anything now like they did then and then when you're a sci-fi horror writer your language is even weirder than i'm sure the regular language of the time so it gets tough to listen to yeah it's weird it's like aliens mating with humans to create to create hybrid fish people while speaking like Shakespeare. Yeah, basically. Yep. So that's fun. So you cannot find us on Spotify, unfortunately,
