Of all the things I did while alive, I'm proud to say I never killed a man. I defrauded them, taint their businesses. But I never killed a man. I defrauded them, tamed their businesses,

Starting point is 00:04:46 but I never took a life that is until today when I cut down one and participated in the deaths of many other next world mercenaries. I had no choice. We had to defend ourselves. Next world didn't want Virgil Lincoln's home rated to play patty cake They were there to kill Logan and Mia and Collette

Starting point is 00:05:12 They almost did but we stopped them I don't feel like I did a bad thing because I'm not convinced I'm even real I'm above good and bad. Lavigne is dead. What's left is something else. I have to stay focused. The others. I can't help but worry about the others. If there are dozens of rounds of munitions being fired in minutes, the livis will be suffering from hearing loss till their last days, that's for sure. Mia took some hits. Logan doesn't look very good.

Starting point is 00:05:53 They were both rushed to the hospital, where Viv and the co-are looking after them. Besides that, we're technically okay. Virgil and his brother, Poet, are still alive. Logan, Colette, they made it out in one piece relatively. And they've been, well, Colette was dragged to the police station. She's being questioned now. I'm watching over her. She's doing such a good job of keeping up.

Starting point is 00:06:23 She shows her strength by staying positive. A trade I always envy in life and now and death. I believe we're closing in on the end game. With the lilies in the hands of the authorities, I can only hope the bureaucracy of this country still has the power to prove innocence and prosecute the guilty. Cross will be desperate now. The evidence is mounting against him. We have Virgil, a former next world leader who admits to being offered the Orpheus Bounty in the past.

Starting point is 00:06:55 We have the bodies of next world mercenaries and we have the names Heathfield, Cross, and Bishop. If the courts do not do their job, I am not afraid to do it for them. The others are wrong when they accuse me of going to war. They're misguided when they accuse me of being obsessed with revenge. They don't understand that Cross has been haunting my life and my afterlife for years, threatening to take action if I don't do what he wants. And there is no doubt a statistical certainty that he has taken action against me in the only way that he could hurt me.

Starting point is 00:07:50 I guess in a way at least I'm free of that yoke. The last tether that helped me to this world. Well, there's one more, but she'll be sick of my attitude with enough time. It may have cost me everything, but I will savor ending across his life. In a way, I feel like I finally found my unfinished business. I am the will of the universe made manifest. A supernatural resolve to balance out what was taken by those who are guilty. Those that snuffed out the innocent lives of the men and the women I worked with at Orpheus. And if this is my unfinished business, well then I pray it brings me the resolution I theorize it will.

Starting point is 00:08:37 I have few regrets. One of them never having the chance to sever the strand of a soul in need Another skin writer like me. Starting point is 00:09:19 and special agent Gibson, let's check in with Mia and Logan in the hospital. You all are being tended to. Obviously you're out of surgery by this point Mia. You've been stabilized. We'll say for the sake of discussion, what was your health that when you were brought in? Oh yes, that was um. That was at uh, we were originally at... I believe it was injured. It was okay. Got it. So we'll bring both you and where were you Logan? Endured as well. I was at injured, but I also had three lethal. Okay, so we'll say you're brought up to hurt at this point.

So, Poet, Virgil is in custody, but Poet's currently being taken care of. Javier, I believe, is the one other one who was injured, and he's undergoing treatment as well. Okay, I mean, I'm going to spend most of my time with Mia,

Starting point is 00:11:03 but I think on the cage, and I'm going to go find word poet and this guy, a, a, a, heavy areas and also just kind of keep watching and keep company with them for a bit, but I'm just making general rounds and just keeping my eye out for things as Mia rests until a, eventually a detective or somebody comes by for her or we get released. Okay, fair enough. Poet is awake and conscious, Javier is not. But, yeah, he, he, oh, go ahead.

Starting point is 00:11:34 I'm so sorry, I, I believe I can't, I just want to verify. We got the phone that had, my phone that had like the info. You know, it looks like he's making a good faith effort to search his memory to see if it brings any bells or see if it, if it, you know, jogs anything, but he seems confused as to what it is, what it could mean. When you are out of the hospital and reunited with your brother, you're right, suggest you guys go somewhere, not at least not in the state.

Starting point is 00:14:58 Is there somewhere else you guys can go? Fuck, not really. I mean, we could try but the cops are asking us to cooperate I don't know we've never really been in the snitching business but I think at this point I don't know how many options verge as left I don't know either yeah these next world fuckers, I mean, that was some crazy shit. Starting point is 00:16:31 after all the doctors have left and it's been kind of confirmed that they're not dying right now. Which they weren't that worried about but everyone seemed to be concerned. They're gonna do something stupid in the hospital which just skimmed out of their body. Here we go. As long as the end the end, like, wait for the machines to start screaming. They do. Oh, they do? Oh, yeah. What the fuck?

Starting point is 00:16:53 Well, everybody really quick. I don't want to say screaming. It's not like you're flat lining because you're not. You're, but your heart rate noticeably slows. And there is a notification sent to the nurse's station and nurse comes in to check on you. But it isn't like you're coding and they're sending in people with paddles and an epinephrine and shit that jumps through your heart.

Starting point is 00:17:15 In the like couple of seconds that Logan has then before someone comes in, I guess, I think they're going to summon which is an imbus again, not big, just like a zero vitality, Witches Nimbus. Just to see what it's like when it's not a dire situation, and it kind of engulfs their hands, their gauze is already charred and blackened like burned wood from all of the the injury they sustained. I think that's really it. I think they just kind of stand next to their body and look at this flame kind of breathing their hand and think about how funny it is that for so long they were putting out fires in a forest and now they are fire. What does the flame look like? Does it have a specific color? Does it have a...

Starting point is 00:18:07 It's... I mean, it kind of reflects like the like the deepest part of an inferno in a in a forest fire. Something that they've seen relatively up close for years. It's not like deep like yellow red. Um, I think they just kind of get lost in it for a while. Yeah, it's, it's a surreal sensation, right? Like you look at this and you know it should, you should be feeling some heat. There should be something being given off by this, but there's nothing. It's, it's quiet. It's not, you don't hear anything, there's no crackle, there's no sensation. Yeah, it's wild. There's like a moment of thinking about the other people who they've seen use, which is nervous, and then the door handle

Starting point is 00:19:01 jiggles and they drop back into their body. Perfect. Mia, we'll say you hear back from via text from her majesty, confirming receipt of the video, and then, you know, very succinctly, are you okay? I'm going to send like one of those selfies of me in the hospital and I'm just Gonna like try to attempt to think Like that. Yep, I'm gonna be like No As soon as you send it and as soon as it reads delivered that your phone starts blowing up immediately

Yeah, so what cross from you is the man who introduced himself as Deputy Director Gibson, who essentially says, tell me what happened. who essentially says, tell me what happened.

Starting point is 00:23:55 Mm, okay, so it's like we told the other dude. The situation is this. I mean, it's really simple. We were working for Orpheus, and we were a part of a team that helps detach tethers from people who were stuck in the afterlife for a long time that needed to move on to the next stage and for a time that was all we did we went out on assignment in Colorado and when we came back one of the largest terrorist attacks on US soil had occurred while we were outgit milk. It was perpetrated by these foxes that just tried to shoot us and kill us which was wild and it was perpetrated by them as like a classic hit from

Starting point is 00:24:42 what we can tell you. There's a video that my friend Mia took that confirms this that has like full confession from the other team. They defected from next world in order to make that happen. And because of that next world, tried to kill them too. of that next world tried to kill them too. We're in a situation where our company no longer exists, but for some reason we're still worthy of being manhunted, and one of the most militant private companies in the world now has access to everything that Orpheus was and has effectively eliminated all competition. So whether you're upset about the monopoly, the private military force, or the fact that someone has full control over the dead now, I'd pick your poison, but that's

Starting point is 00:25:38 the situation we're in. I'm happy to talk to you about anything you'd like to know. I want you to remember that I went to an art school, so there are limitations to the things that I can tell you. I'm sure Viv here can fill you in on the blanks that I miss, but we haven't done anything wrong. And to be persecuted for anything, I think, would be the wrong decision for you, because then I can't do anything to help you. Uh, Miseker, Viv, anything to add?

Starting point is 00:26:15 No, I think they actually covered it. What else we might be able to tell you kind of depends on the angle you want to take. And what snacks you're going to bring? Starting point is 00:27:49 it's a situation where he's looking down the barrel of a gun or the rest of his life, and he's trying to preserve the second, not the first. Um okay um and Gibson speaks up uh Mr. Sawyer this is uh this is Deputy Director Matthew Gibson with the Federal Bureau of Vestigation. I just want to let you know your your daughter has been uh of great use to us, and we have confirmed that she and her cohorts had no involvement in the attack on Orpheus, and they're not wanted by any stretch of the imagination. This is like a tenuous relationship where it's totally built on a mutual trust that you can actually see what's wrong here and understand that maybe everyone in your department doesn't agree with you.

If you find it, if you stumble across anything about a lot of this seems to be motivated or maybe I don't know driven by something called project flatline, and we don't even know what it is yet. So if we could know exactly what is motivating some of these smart cities decisions, that would be helpful. The consider done. Do you have any other context?

You see AK-47s. You see some machine guns. You see violence. You feel violence. And you notice that some of these are dead

Starting point is 01:14:12 and some of them are living. And you see two, kind of standing at the head in a position of power, almost watching you or what you feel like watching you. One is an older Hispanic man, probably in his 50s, and the other is a very skinny, very life Caucasian man with black hair and glasses. And you feel menace before you're pulled back. I'll probably like snap back pretty hard because I'm stretching my gauze that been.

It's not in her usual style, it's not abstract, it's not, um, cr- it's not like contrived, uh, it's just a honest to God sketch.

Starting point is 02:00:57 Love it. Yeah. You capture those details of, of the first time you met poet and Logan, and the state of the house, the sandbags against the window, poet looking almost conspiratorially out the, out the gap in the sandbags with the shotgun in his hands. And it's a good way to process kind of everything you saw and dealt with and the enormity of what you survived kind of is put at ease through processing, through art. And I think if she finds those rooms empty and she's able to get these sketches done, I think that for a brief second she goes and stands outside of me as room. Does not go in, but battles something there scratches
