Then we get into the questions. The first question was, what are some ways that we practice becoming uncomfortable? Being
Starting point is 00:02:00 uncomfortable is what forces grow. So this person uses the examples of like researching opposing views or taking cold showers, whatever. What do we do to make ourselves uncomfortable? The next question was, this individual is pretty much addicted to the low carb blue monster drinks. How do they stop? So if you find yourself addicted to caffeine, coffee, whatever, what is a good method to get yourself off those things
Starting point is 00:02:25 that you can get your body acting normal again? The third question was, this particular individual is a female, she's very fit, and she's asking if we've ever had female clients that are insecure about their muscles. Now this person loves their muscles, loves working out, but feels uncomfortable probably because people are staring at her.

Then the final question was, do we think that having a higher level of education in health and exercise science degree would help someone get an edge in the
Starting point is 00:03:06 fitness industry. Great conversation there. We talk about alternatives to higher education in college. Also we're coming up on January. It's where we're moving into the busiest time of the year in fitness. Lots of people get started on their workouts and nutrition in January. Most of them stop by the time April may roll around, which is horrible.

Starting point is 00:06:11 And because I said to her, I said, you know, I said women, I've been cat-called and I've had women grab my asses and that. And she said, yeah, but you don't feel threatened. And I said, you know, she's right, I don't feel threatened. So I said, what do you mean? She goes, well, imagine if you were in a world
Starting point is 00:06:27 where, or you were in a place where all of a sudden you're around a bunch of dudes that were, you know, like the size of, what's his name? The dude that we interviewed, Robert. Obers. Like a strong man. Like, what if you were around a bunch of six foot seven, 400 pound.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And they were all aggressive game in. And they're all trying to fucking, you know what I mean, I'll try to mess with you. Whoa. You would be like, yeah. Any comment, right? Any comment, one of them looks at you and goes, hey nice butt.
Starting point is 00:06:53 I would be like in a constant state of puckered. Yeah, you'd be like, oh shit. Yeah, motherfuck, don't comment on my butt. You're trying to be sexual arousing. That's the difference. The difference is the threat. Because we have, we're bigger, we're stronger. Yeah, a lot of sense. Although I feel like women, because of that, they get away with a little more aggressive life. Of course they do. I've never seen another

And you see this all the time, right? Like Bill Cosby. He had like a couple like one woman come out and then all of a sudden more and more women coming out
Starting point is 00:09:24 saying yeah, he did that to me because now you feel Courageous and you can't underestimate how scary it is To call someone out especially when they're a person in power or like that. What's that guy's name Epstein? Jeffrey Epstein or whatever the line's thing excuse me that the other guys have scum bar view Yeah, Harvey one time what a what a scumbag right but the dude can literally make scumbag, right? But now he's 12 and I know he cusses with his friends and all that stuff. I've talked about that on the show. He's a good kid. So we were home and my daughter had to go somewhere with my ex, with my ex. So just me and him chilling and I'm like, oh fuck, let's watch Predator. Like one of the greatest all-time, you know, greatest action movies ever.
Starting point is 00:15:41 Dude, if here's the great thing about what it's a very good neutral 12-year-old boy bro It's it's one of the greatest so here's the thing you what a hero should look like you have all your favorite movies when you're You know when you're growing up that you love and you get the feeling of watching it again for the first time because now you You're sharing it with somebody. Starting point is 00:17:06 So I'm trying to think of another movie that I want to watch with them that was awesome. I mean, you got to get like Conan in there for sure. So Conan could be cool. You know what the other, so he asked me about Alien. Remember Aliens the first one? That might be a little scary, huh? That's a little creepy man.
Starting point is 00:17:22 That's definitely more scary. But the reason why he asked me that was because all he knows about Predator is Predator versus Aliens. Well, what do you, what do you, are you do right now at his age? Is this a thought process? Okay, I'm okay with more violence, but not so much scary or swear words.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Like, which one? Because I get to get movies like a, like Beverly Hills Cop was such a classic movie. Yeah, that's great. But then also there's a lot of F-bombs in that. Yeah, I don't care about the cussing. It's too, like, Gore is kind of okay, but if it's... Have you watched Scary Creek?
Starting point is 00:17:56 Big trouble, little challenge. Oh, yeah. I showed him that when he was 9. Oh, yeah. That was, wow. That was one of the first ones you got. I did fuck up a couple times, like a lie. Yeah. There were a couple times I showed movies to my kids
Starting point is 00:18:07 and then kind of scarred them a little bit. I showed them red ones. I think you have to do that to figure out where the line is, right? Because you don't know where it's at. I wouldn't know where to go. I wouldn't know like, okay, my child's seven. What's the appropriate age I can show him?
Starting point is 00:18:22 A certain reason was like, I mean, he was like three. And I showed him Star Wars, and I couldn't help it. I was like, too soon. There's way too soon. You didn't get it. But not only that, I was getting like, gree from Courtney and from my mom,
Starting point is 00:18:36 and everybody, because it was like, you know, it's like space violence. I was like, it's not even, it's like lasers, you know? Like, yeah, he lost an arm, you know, big deal. Yeah, but it came back. Yeah, yeah. It's not a big deal. It wasn't like scarring like Star Wars wouldn't be bad.
Starting point is 00:18:51 It's not bad. I'm not. Some people think it is. I showed him Star Wars a while. The Matrix I showed him last year, which he loved the Matrix. He thought it was so awesome. So that was a good one. So I think aliens might be the one.

Starting point is 00:19:21 Dude, like this, this is one of those things like, we had, we had an interesting day yesterday already in, like I got home and I appreciate, I appreciate this part about like how my wife handles things and stuff like she, she knew exactly like, like not to tell me, you know, if I'm not there because like I kind of like lose it a little bit, you know, if I'm not there because like I kind of like lose it a little bit, you know, like I want to be there to like confront whatever issues are there and like let's talk it
Starting point is 00:19:50 out and like let me handle it and let me what happened discipline or whatever needs to happen. Well, so, um, so we had the cousins over like after Thanksgiving and they're all playing nice and everything and and Ethan's really into Legos and we do a lot with stop motion and we're getting him all involved with these little miniature characters and stuff that he creates, like his own little movies and stuff, so he's really into it. And so he was getting his cousin really into it with him.
Starting point is 00:20:21 And so he had him play with him and stuff and then actually gave him two of his figurines to leave the ones that he doesn't play with anymore. And he thought it was a nice gesture. And he's a good kid. And he does stuff like that every now and then. He's very thoughtful. But I come to find out that I wasn't able to go
Starting point is 00:20:41 to this, because I was working. I wasn't able to go to this, because I was working, I wasn't able to go to this party that all the family went to. And so they were there. And so his cousin brought his own figurings to the party. And so they're all playing with them and all this stuff. And so my son just decides, oh, well,
Starting point is 00:21:03 I'm just gonna take these and so he steals Toys from his cousin and just takes it and then so we get a call from his dad It's it from him or like takes it home like he like he took it home like for himself Okay, so he like put it in his pocket hit it and brought it back home Wasn't like he just was using it right there in front of him Oh, no, no, and then he was like playing with it and stuff in front of like me and my wife and I had no idea like it wasn't like he just was using it right there in front of him. No, no, no. And then he was like playing with it and stuff in front of like me and my wife. And I had no idea like it wasn't his. And how did you put that all together?
Starting point is 00:21:32 Well, my brother-in-law called because the fuck brother, because his son was like, hey, you know, my son took, you know, his toys and so Courtney confronted him. And he was just like, well, she first was like, huh, do you remember those toys that you're playing with, you know, with your cousin? And do you know anything about that and like kind of just like fishing? And he like, oh yeah, no, yeah, I know. I remember those toys and like he was like all skirting around the issue. And then you know, she had to kind of confront him and be like, did he deny it when she confronted him?
Starting point is 00:22:15 Like at first sort of like just was trying to sluff it off and like hoping it was like in a breeze over. And so she kept prodding and then was like, look, this is a serious thing and like started to like, you know, like, I'm gonna give you one chance to kind of come clean with this and all that. And then he finally came clean and was like, yes, you know, I took him.
Starting point is 00:22:37 And you didn't give the Bangkok lecture? But what? The Bangkok, isn't it Bangkok where they cut your hand off? Oh my God. Yeah. Oh my God. I thought that's the tactic that all parents use Because I think every kid steals at one point right even if it's like it like not meaning to right You just think that I could just take this little hand and you get a butcher and I feel like listen In bed dog
Starting point is 00:23:00 It's the thing that where they do that and they do that I do it somewhere yeah, there's the thing that's where they do that. They do that. They do that in the middle. Somewhere, yeah. Where is it dug? Is it Philippines? I think it's Saudi Arabia. No, it's the Middle East Saudi Arabia. Oh, okay. Well, let's avoid that.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Yeah. I thought you had that place. That's horrible. Yeah, no, I'm just glad that on some level I was in there, because for me, that's one of those things like stealing, I've just, like, even as a kid, I never stole, so I don't really, I don't know, I have like a certain code that I operate by, and that's just like, I was infuriated by this.
Starting point is 00:23:33 And so just for me to recognize that, like, you didn't understand the problem initially, I'm like, wow, like, like, so how do I get to that level where it's gonna sting and, you know, he's gonna understand that like, you know, this is not like something that I'm, you know, it's a big deal. It's a big deal, it's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:23:57 It's a really big deal. Kids at that age, because he's what Seven, you said. Yeah. Kids at that age start to learn to really lie and steal and do stuff like that and it's part of them really growing and learning and understanding things and it's smart kids actually lie more even more when they find like really prococious kids kids are really intelligent. They'll find that they lie even more, almost because they enjoy the creating the situation where they're creating lies and imagination, whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:30 So I wouldn't worry, so I don't think your kids can, I don't think he's gonna be a thief. Yeah, no, like, I know, and the rational side of me comes out, you know, later, but it's just funny because she'll tell me something like that and she handled it very well. Are you gonna talk about it? Well, or is it already done? Yeah, no, I still have to talk to
Starting point is 00:24:47 him about it. Like she told me right before I went to sleep last night and like, you know, I had to get up early and like train and so I haven't had a chance to even and he knows that that the talk is kind of I like I know. Yeah, talk. So all day he was like, I got a long court. He didn't tell me about it. And so he was acting weird around. That was the action for just, I love you, dad. I didn't like, no, he was hugging me really excessively. You know, just like shaking and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:25:14 oh my God, you know. I didn't even know what's going on. And I know, wow, you know, he's, he's been a friendly today. Like, you know, I don't get this all the time from you. This is great. Yeah. And so.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Isn't it funny how it's just human nature for the kids to naturally do that, right, too? Like, no, they're like, okay, I'm in fucking trouble right now. Like, I'm gonna love all over Dad. Like, you didn't teach him that. Like, it's something that he just, it neatly has, right? That he all of a sudden I'm gonna like help.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Oh my gosh. I love on him. Yeah, he knows. There's this one study that they do like help. I love him. Oh my gosh. I love on him. Yeah, he knows. There's this one study that they do with kids. I love looking at these like studies that they do in kids, because they're so fun to watch and see how children behave.
Starting point is 00:25:53 And there's this one where I don't know what they use exactly. There's like candy or something on a table. And a kid is sitting in a chair, and then the researcher leaves the room, and they tell them like you can't, don't have any of that candy, okay? And the kid says, and then the researcher leaves the room, and they tell them, like, you can't, don't have any of that candy, okay? And the kid says, okay, and they leave the room, and they wait to see how long before a kid grabs the candy
Starting point is 00:26:12 and sneaks one, because there's a bunch of them, right? So they're like, oh, then we'll miss it, right? But then what they'll do is they'll tell the kid, hey, I'm gonna leave the room now, don't eat the candy, and they're in the chair over here, and it's just the empty chair. And the chair over here is a magic fairy, and they're gonna watch you,
Starting point is 00:26:32 and they're gonna watch you to make sure you don't steal, and then they leave, and then kids won't steal. Like just some just feeling- Accountability. Yeah, like no, no, just feeling like there's something there. Even though there's nothing there, and the kids won't do it because the magic fairy- is the chair. There's the same study like that, but feeling like there's something there, even though there's nothing there. And the kids won't do it because the magic wand is the same.
Starting point is 00:26:46 There's a same study like that, but with an eye. So it was a sticker of an eye. And they would put that, like you said, in the room or, so somebody on the computer. Oh, I've heard that. Yeah, I've heard that. They put a sticker of an eye on it. And the behavior was completely different.
Starting point is 00:27:04 It's so cool. It was so much more like a productivity and less shenanigans happening and all that. It's interesting. Did you guys do alphanage shelf? No, I don't know. I thought you did do it. Okay, so we're still doing it. So, and that's the other thing.
Starting point is 00:27:21 So here's the other thing. It's like that's, we have that, that magic elf thing where it's like this extra bit of accountability, like leading up to Christmas, right? And I don't like to play into that, because I'm like, I don't wanna give it that power. Yeah, because then you take it away, and they figure it out that space. Like what, you're supposed to just be good right now.

Starting point is 00:30:47 The eagle has landed! Quikwa. All right, our first question is from Nick Bellden. What are some ways you guys practice becoming uncomfortable? Researching opposing views, taking cold showers, et cetera. Well, those two right off the gates, I mean, I think everybody in this room, anytime that we look up or we're reading something,
Starting point is 00:31:10 I don't, I think we always, and sometimes it's the other guy who makes sure that he pulls his way and challenges that, but we always look at both sides. Like I don't think there's ever a time where it's like we read something and it's like, oh, this is true. Like, for me at least, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:25 I grew up before this whole, the internet craze happened. And then afterwards, and so I'm very skeptical of what I read. And I mean, you've, I'm people that have been listening to show for a long time, used to hear me T-sal about, you know, being like, it's on Google, it's fucking true. Or like, because there is a lot of bullshit out there. There's a lot of bias. And there's a lot of ways that you could take some information and you can put a spin on it to argue it either way.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I feel like I can, you know, it looks especially like with fitness stuff. I can, I can debate a topic and defend it and then I can also point out the flaws. So I think we always search out the people opposing views. Taking cold showers is definitely something that I do to make myself, it's not like I do to make myself feel uncomfortable, it's uncomfortable to take a freezing cold shower. But that's why your body adapts. Right, exactly. I think Dr. Andy Galpin says, made said this line, which I thought was excellent. And you're either adapting or you're optimizing. Yeah, so optimizing would be like making everything awesome,
Starting point is 00:32:24 like being perfectly comfortable You know optimizing your diet optimizing everything so that you're just you're just this machine But when you're optimized you're not adapting because your body's not under any kind of stress It's the adaptation that gets you to get better to get better change and progress and You have to be uncomfortable for that to have you're like recalibrating to kind of create a new standard. Like so once you get to that new standard, you still have to pursue and really stretch yourself in a different direction. So yeah, like to make yourself uncomfortable again, creates more growth.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Once you get to that growth period, you want to keep, you know, come back to whatever that new sort of homeostasis is again. Yeah. you know, come back to whatever that new sort of homeostasis is again. Yeah, something that I've done for a long time is I love Facebook because there's lots of pages in groups that you can follow and it encourages just a format of Facebook encourages discussion. And so, you know, back in the day, when I had my personal training, you know, facility or wellness facility, in the middle of the day, I would my personal training, you know, facility or wellness facility. In the middle of the day, I would always have a break that would last about, I don't know, three hours or so.
Starting point is 00:33:30 So I would train clients in the morning, then I would lift weights and do all my thing, which would take me about an hour and a half to two hours. And then what I used to do is I would eat, launch, or something, and I'd sit in front of my computer, and I would go on on Facebook and I would discuss, debate, whatever with different groups and something that I learned to do. And part of the reason why I did this is it made me a better, it made me better at my positions or stronger my positions or it educated me more in what I thought was the right thing to think or whatever.
Starting point is 00:34:04 As I would go to the opposite side, I used to do this all whatever, is I would go to the opposite side. I used to do this all the time. I'd go on the opposite side, I'd follow pages that I disagreed with, and I'd get in these debates and arguments with people who are on the other side. Now, the hard thing about that is it's very difficult to find people you disagree with
Starting point is 00:34:20 who will also debate with you without calling you names or yelling at you or blocking you. And so you have to be very careful, you have to be very respectful, you have to let the person know that you're, listen, I appreciate this discussion. I disagree with you, but I appreciate it. So I would say that several times. And I would talk and discuss with people different positions. And sometimes I would change my position, which I started to learn to enjoy. I mean, there's really nothing better than,
Starting point is 00:34:51 from my point of view, there's nothing better than firmly believing something and then realizing that I'm wrong. And the reason why that's awesome is because I no longer have to live being wrong. Like, oh shit, thank you. Like, I learned this, and I was thinking this other thing before, is because I no longer have to live being wrong. Oh shit, thank you. I learned this and I was thinking this other thing before
Starting point is 00:35:09 but now I realize I was wrong. I appreciate that now I know this because before 10 minutes ago, I did not realize this at all. But a lot of people have tough time with that because they identify so strongly with what they believe that if somebody changes their opinion or proves them wrong with facts or objective argument, it means to
Starting point is 00:35:31 them that it challenges their entire being. Like if all of a sudden, if I think, you know, politics is a good example because people get so fired up about it. If I think my political views are totally on 100% true and accurate and right. And somebody comes to me and presents to me very strong objective evidence that what I'm saying, what I believe is not right. If I identified really strongly with my political views, like that's who I am, that's this is me,
Starting point is 00:36:00 then how can I possibly change my views? I'm not on it, that's who I am. That's what I believe. So it makes things very very difficult and fitness is I hate to say I'm just gonna say Fitness is just like that weird. It's just like this and you know I so something I'm currently going through right now and I talk about putting myself in uncomfortable situation is You know, I I had it's been now I started six months ago. It's been on week seven I think right now of of no test Oström and talk about a fucking rough ride for me. Oh, yeah, you've gone off everything Yeah, yeah, so I mean it's and I'm my fucking sex drives in the floor and I'm like lost all kinds of lean body mass and
Starting point is 00:36:42 Part but I'm still training. I'm still working out, and I've changed my focus over to, you know, basketball type shape, and I'm getting into work like that, and still continuing my mobility. And, you know, a lot of that challenges my insecurities, a lot of that challenges, you know, the guy who always wanted to be bigger and buff, and, you know, so, and I know that. And so I intentionally do that to myself,
Starting point is 00:37:04 or I'll put myself through that, just to, just a force growth to know that, like I know that, and so I intentionally do that to myself, where I'll put myself through that, just to force growth, to know that like, you know, I need to learn to love my body, love my physique, love it, where at all levels of health and fitness, because I could still be, you know, lean, good shape, like I'm getting in right now, but I just don't, I don't look the same way as I did a year ago. And that's okay, because I never identified with that guy.
Starting point is 00:37:24 And I think a lot of people do though's okay because I never identified with that guy. And I think a lot of people do though, they attach themselves to whatever their image or whatever it is that they've created for themselves. And then to break out of that is really tough. Same thing goes for training modalities. People get in this camp of how they train and work out and they follow the same shit over and over and over. And they don't realize that their bodies become so efficient at that modality that it's like you're not seeing the change that you're seeking. You say
Starting point is 00:37:49 you want change, you say you want your body change, but you're not willing to make the change. And so I'm always catching myself, you know, with starting to go back into pattern is where I get stuck in a phase one or whatever. And so I know like a lot of times when we're, you know, I don't follow our maps to an exact T, we all modify in our own way. And there's times where if I feel like I've been in phase one, I'll jump all the way to phase three, just and then challenge myself to stay in there longer
Starting point is 00:38:15 than what I would because I know everyone gravitates towards a phase, right? That they love to do more than others. And I always say it on the show of time too, that normally what you need to be doing is what you're not doing. And that's what's do more than others. And I always say it on the show all the time too, that normally what you need to be doing is what you're not doing. And that's what's best for your body. And so I'm always trying to do that.
Starting point is 00:38:30 And I'm not perfect. I catch myself doing this shit all the time. And I think that just starts with awareness. And then once you're aware of it, and then is making that decision to put yourself in those uncomfortable situations. Well, yeah. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:44 I guess this question somewhat relates to what I've been thinking about constantly now. And I think that life has a way of sort of presenting things as like, hey, you're out of balance. You know, and like what you've been doing has been seeking. Like I've been, I've been really throttling down on trying to grow, grow, grow, grow, grow, grow, grow. But you know, like understanding where the balance is, I think that's the new frontier for me
Starting point is 00:39:15 that I'm really trying to kind of wrangle and understand and pull back in and in order to, you know, press myself even further out. I've been pressing myself in all kinds of different directions and too many different directions. And to understand that has been really tough because I feel like if I'm doing that, like I feel like this is what I have to do. Like I have to I have to always challenge myself in like every different facet possible. I have to be the best dad, I have to be the best, you know, husband, I have to be the best, you know, person, you know, working for this company, I have to contribute the most with this,
Starting point is 00:39:51 or, you know, I have to do all these things and I have to tackle all these problems. And, you know, like, my biggest problem is that, you know, I have these associations with, like, I don't quit, you know, I don't quit anything. Like, that's always been the driving mechanism for me, my whole life. I don't quit. And I have to learn that there's some things I have to just, like, release and there's some things I have to, like,
Starting point is 00:40:16 that's the uncomfortable part for you. That's uncomfortable. So for me, like, that's something I'm currently going through that and like, trying to and trying to figure out, what will optimize me right now? Because I don't even know what optimization is. I don't know what that looks like. Cutting certain things to bring me to that state so that I can go forward and press myself hard again
Starting point is 00:40:46 and go through that sort of sprint period, but I have to understand now like what's gonna benefit me the most. And so that's interesting. Have you cut out something recently that has helped you in that direction? Or have you applied that yet? Is there something that you're...
Starting point is 00:40:59 Yeah, there's a few things. And I think a little side projects and other things. And I think, like, little side projects and other things that I've gotten myself into, you know, business wise, or like even just with my friends, there's certain things that have been hard because, you know, I wanna help people out all the time. Like, if somebody asked me for something to do something with them, or like,
Starting point is 00:41:21 I have this project, dude, could you help me, you know, get this up and running? And I want you to be a part of it. I'm like, you know, I'll help, could you help me, you know, get this up and running, and I want you to be a part of it, and I'm like, you know, I'll help you, whatever way I can, or whatever. And I've just had to like be like, nope, you know, I can't contribute to this. Like it's taking up too much of my time.
Starting point is 00:41:37 Like I need to focus, and I need to like put, you know, effort into my family more. Like things like this pop up pop up with my son, this would never happen. I just keep reiterating to myself, I'm like, wow, this is a sign for me that I need to focus while I'm here and establish what is true north
Starting point is 00:42:01 and what is the moral compass of this house. true north and what is like the moral compass of this house, you know. And like, yeah, that's weird. I'm not emotional. I was just like a cop. You freaked me out there. I know it sounded like, oh my god, that's so crazy. Yeah. No, but it's kind of like, you know, it's a little bit of an emotional thing for me. But like, it's tough, man. And I've also gone through, you know, it's a little bit of an emotional thing for me, but it's tough, man. And I've also gone through the process of trying to invent something. And this is that sort of elephant for me that, dude, I put so much effort into this thing,
Starting point is 00:42:39 but look, is it benefiting you now? This isn't benefiting me. You know? And you just have to like come to grips with what you can do that's gonna benefit yourself, your family, like, what are the things that you can kind of narrow it down to that's gonna like move you forward
Starting point is 00:43:01 and you're gonna thrive. And so like, you know, it's a pride thing that you have to kind of kick that aside. Maybe one of the one of the biggest and most common challenges, I think, for doers, if you're a doer, you tend to to pride yourself on completing task and to be an older accomplished and to never quit. And but I tell you what, that that skill set, learning to really harness that, right? Or you get better at it, will serve you so much better, so much better. And I remember going through very, very similar stuff.
Starting point is 00:43:36 I think, I think failing at enough businesses, I think, has helped me. I think early on, when I first would do something, you know, I would, you know, because I'm a very passionate person, anything I do. If I apply myself to something or I say, I'm going to do something, I'm fucking super passionate. I know you guys are the same way too. But I know a long time ago on the show, I talked about, you know, loving something but not marrying it. And I, that, that, I don't remember if I read that somewhere or what, but I know that was something that stuck with me back then because there was things that I'm always passionate about stuff, I love everything that I do,
Starting point is 00:44:08 I put my heart and soul into it, and that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. I think that's how you are successful, but then also knowing when to cut your losses or knowing when to. When it's done serving you. Yeah, exactly, when it's no longer serving you at all, especially when I would have things on other things on my plate that were serving me so much more.
Starting point is 00:44:27 And it's like if I just put 10 more percent into that part of my life, it's going to feed me back 40%. And also redefining what success means to you. Because sometimes success is not what you think. Sometimes you think to yourself, oh, success is gonna be that, I'll give you an example. When I had my fitness studio, success to me would have been having 15 locations
Starting point is 00:44:54 and you know, have all these members and whatever. And the reality was that the success that it brought me was not that. The success that it brought me was, it completely molded and shaped me into the fitness personality and person that I am today. If I never had that, I would 100% still be that meathead, you know, that just understands building muscle and that kind of stuff. I would not be who I am today and talk about the things that I talk about today. And so I needed that period of time
Starting point is 00:45:25 for this to happen, for mind pump to happen. Not realizing, I thought it was a failure, but when I look back, it was a total success. This wouldn't be possible for me if it wasn't for that. And so I think sometimes we forget that things service in ways that we fail to recognize. Shit, bro, that's the same thing with people too, man. And people have a hard time accepting that is that people, there's people in your life
Starting point is 00:45:51 that served a purpose and served a time in your life that was very, very important. Maybe it was a best friend who helped you through a tough time and you guys grew together. But a lot of times as you grow and you age and you evolve, especially if you're growth minded, sometimes you grow outgrow people. And I have seen so many, and I've been for sure the same person, I hang on to a friendship longer than I should have because I really like the person, right?
Starting point is 00:46:14 And it's okay to really like the person, but if you're surrounding yourself with a person that you know, you feel like you're the person that's caring. Right. And I was notorious for that. I was the friend that was kind of, I was always giving, giving, giving, giving. And that just, you can't,
Starting point is 00:46:29 it's really tough for you to continue to evolve and grow if you're constantly putting out all this energy and you're not really getting a lot of it back. And I think having the awareness to be able to see that is such an important trait to have. That was so tough. I mean, I remember having business partnerships and stuff like going through like, and you just realize,
Starting point is 00:46:48 wow, I am carrying you like this whole time. Like, I just remember like coming in, I was hiring this nutritionist to kind of help me like back in the day to kind of handle like some of my high-end clients and also like a, this guy that was, he was also in conjunction, he was making, he was a chef that was like making them their meals
Starting point is 00:47:10 and everything had this whole thing kind of set up. I was trying to build so much value to this process and they just, it just got to a point where, like I could do most of what they did, but like I understood that Man like what I was doing was like going out of my way to try and really like get their business up and running for them I was trying to get this other person's business up and running for them You know, they're leaning on me to set up all the structure for all the stuff to
Starting point is 00:47:41 You know get get their phone lines all attached to my phone lines. And it just got to a point where it was so interwoven and there was no give back in the entire process. And I just had to like, I'm like, I just realized. And it's so funny because Courtney's one of the first people to point these type of relationships out to me. And I don't wanna hear it
Starting point is 00:48:03 because I have care about these people, and I wanna help them. And it's easier for her, because she's outside of it. Yeah, it's easier to, you know, when you're watching a football game, and you're in the game, and you're playing, you're not seeing the field.
Starting point is 00:48:15 You're not seeing everything. You're not seeing as much as a spectator who's sitting above the whole field, and seeing everything that's going on. And so sometimes you're so caught up, and this happens to me all the time. I'll be so caught up on what I'm doing that I have to stop taking outside view
Starting point is 00:48:30 and then say what kind of advice would I give myself if I was someone else? And a lot of times it's advice I don't want. You know what I mean, you don't wanna hear it but you do it anyways. I don't know how it went all the way over there. I'm just wanna let this stuff. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:48:41 There you go. Get us back on track, Doug. All right, our next question is from Anthony Lifts 18. Pretty sure I'm addicted to low-car blue monster. I remember that drink. On how to stop. When I don't have one, I can't wake up in function. I'm pretty sure it is not good for my health.
Starting point is 00:49:01 I have two a day. So what they're experiencing is, because the comment of I can't get up and function unless I have one, well, have you dealt with this personally yourself? Are you ever somebody that was addicted to these things at all? Oh, not this in particular, but to stimulants. Dude, I, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:49:20 I had gotten up to, remember when rock star had the cola flavor? Oh, I remember eating. I was fucking drinking. I in the morning at seven I used to be two. They used to be two for five dollars lemonade right next to my house, right? I picked that up first thing in the morning. I'd have I'd have two I had one on the drive over to work and then within like by 10 a.m I was having the big tall boy versus dude. I was at like Clockwork I did that for years
Starting point is 00:49:44 years so I did that for years. Years. So I did that with Speed stacks. I did that with rip force or a fedra caffeine for sure. It was all stimulants and the body starts to adapt to these stimulants by reducing its own production of your own natural wake-up energy chemicals, your catacole means epinephrine, nor epinephrine, it'll actually start to produce less of those.
Starting point is 00:50:10 And it will start to close off the receptors that, you know, whatever stimulant you're taking attaches to. And so this person is in the middle of hardcore adaptation, hardcore addiction, if you will. And it is addiction because when you go off, whoever the guy is Anthony, when you go off, you are going to have withdrawal. I hate to break it to you, but you are going to notice withdrawal. Well, I think you can do this, like so. You can mitigate some of it, but you're going to have to.
Starting point is 00:50:39 And I've been through this more than once, right? So like you have Speed, Sac, Rockstar, I've kind of gone through like these little cycles., you know, I've done cold turkey and I've winked. So what worked for me? It doesn't feel like death because if you get used to 600 milligrams of caffeine every morning, and then also you cut it out, like you might get headaches and shit. Yeah, because you'll feel like shit,
Starting point is 00:51:37 what's, it's, especially in the morning, what it's doing is it's actually, you're artificially replacing cortisol, because in the morning, cortisol's supposed to spike. And the reason why you feel like shit in the morning is either your body's not responding to your cortisol anymore, or your body's actually producing,
Starting point is 00:51:54 not producing a lot of cortisol in the morning and producing more later on in the evening. You may even have issues with sleep later on. So yeah, these are strong signs that it's time to wean yourself off these caffeine or stimulant-based drinks and stay off of them for a little while You know give yourself a few months. You may actually find and this is I've had this happen several several times with clients where I'll slowly wean them off of stimulants
Starting point is 00:52:21 For you know whatever reason and then two three months into it they're like, I have more energy than I had before. It's just, yeah, I feel like I'm gonna get it. Not only that, but at one point, it'll actually taste like shit. I mean, I was somebody who could drink the rock stars every single day, multiple. If you were to hand me one of those right now, because it's been gross. Oh, it tastes disgusting.
Starting point is 00:52:40 Yeah, I moved on to coffee. I mean, it's not like the best. I grew up. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like, I became an adult. And I on to coffee. I mean, it's not like the best. I grew up. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. I became an adult. And I started drinking coffee. But I mean, I still have to go through periods
Starting point is 00:52:51 of the same process of weaning out and scaling down my intake. Because it can, I mean, it can get excessive. And you have to realize your habits. And right now you recognize that, right? Which is great. You at least recognize the fact that this is probably not good for me and maybe I should do something about it.
Starting point is 00:53:10 Which already is a huge win because I feel like. Part of what I remember when we first came out on this and we talked a lot of shit about professionals out there that were saying that artificial sweeteners were okay and they drink lots of energy drinks and then some of them were sponsored by monster and rock stars to fight that. And it's just like, dude, here's the thing,
Starting point is 00:53:29 it's whether we can debate that right now on like how bad this is for us. 100% there's addictive properties to it. 100% yeah. 100% engineered in there. 100% so when you're a health professional and you're somebody who's trying to be better like promoting that and I'll be the first to admit,
Starting point is 00:53:44 like I was fucking just as guilty of doing that, which is also why we're so passionate about it when we see other professionals that promote it, because it's just like, man, I'm not saying that you can't have rocks to every once in a while. I'm sure there's stuff that I intake all the time that I know I probably shouldn't, but I'm most certainly not going to present that to my audience is like,
Starting point is 00:54:05 hey, it's a great alternative choice. You don't see me screenshotting my diet coax, you know? Yeah, and you know, the other thing too with these stimulants is, I tell you what, and maybe I shouldn't say this, but one of the best feelings in the world is when you've leaned yourself off of stimulants for a while, and then you take them again. Yeah. Fucking great. There's nothing like going off of coffee. You recreate that.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Oh, dude. That bus. I do this with everything. I do this with coffee. I do this with cannabis even. I use cannabis occasionally. And sometimes it works its way up into where I'm using it more than once a week, twice a week, three days a week.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Then I'll stop using it for a week. Then I'll have it again. It gets sharper. I'll have it again. And I'm like, oh shit. This is the greatest feeling ever. Same thing with caffeine. I'll go off caffeine. Then I'll have some caffeine. And I'll break PR again and I'm like, oh shit, like this is the greatest feeling ever. Same thing with caffeine, I'll go off caffeine, then I'll have some caffeine
Starting point is 00:54:47 and I'll break PRs in my workouts. So have fun with it. Right, there you go. Next question is from sincerely jazz. Have you ever had female clients be insecure about their muscle? I find myself covering my muscles up sometimes because I feel like some might think I'm overdoing it.
Starting point is 00:55:05 I take rest days and have a good relationship with food. I just genuinely love training and eating healthy. Oh man. This is actually really common. Interesting. It is. It's very, very common. And I looked up her picture, she looks fantastic.
Starting point is 00:55:19 And I used to have clients all the time. I mean, it's like the number one thing that I think a female would say to me when she's wanting to get in shape is, hey, I want to have clients all the time. I mean, it's like the number one thing that I think a female would say to me when she's wanting to get in shape is, hey, I want to get in shape, I don't want to build a bunch of muscle. So it's definitely an insecurity for a lot of women. And it's unfortunate because it is so hard
Starting point is 00:55:38 for like 99% of women to actually build muscle. It's like so hard. And so if you're lucky, if you're one of the blessed ones that actually does build some good muscle, like I don't know what this girl looks like, but I mean, if you're if you're blessed and lucky, do that, that's fucking awesome. And anybody that thinks otherwise is just a hater because that's a great position to be in. Yeah. Do you think like it's the community around her that maybe is presenting this as an insecurity. Like, like, she's like just maybe thinking of it as like, oh, I'm showing off for something. Like, because that's, that's what everybody wants, you know, at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:56:15 is they want to be nice, lean, healthy, like, and comfortable in their own skin. And so, you know, oh, shit, she looks badass. Yeah. Yeah, she's fit. She's lean. Dude, she looks badass. She's not even, she's not even massive. I think you just need different friends.
Starting point is 00:56:27 Well, here's the thing, people might comment that you're a little too muscular. You're not, I think you look natural. You look natural. Yeah, you look natural, you look a little badass. Don't even fucking listen to. But, you know what it is, they're commenting on, it's not that you have too much muscles that you're lean.
Starting point is 00:56:41 This is the other thing too, is that you'll get, I'll have female clients that I'll work with, they'll get really lean and then people will comment and say things like you have too much muscle when they're 110 pounds. In reality, it's just that they're really lean and when you get really lean, especially the definition in your shoulders and arms,
Starting point is 00:56:58 they'll start to show and people will make comments. But here's a deal, if you have a good relationship with food and exercise, like you say you do, and you love lifting weights and stuff, like, here's what you need to do. You need to stop giving fucks about what other people think. That's it. For reals, like stop giving a shit. What other people think? You love it, you love your body, you're taking care of yourself, you enjoy it. If you have a good relationship with these things, who cares?
Starting point is 00:57:23 Yeah. Well, people think, and if people have a problem with you, the people around you have a problem with you? That's a reflection. It's not your problem. No, it's a reflection of themselves. It is, I'll tell you what. Because you're guarantee it's always somebody
Starting point is 00:57:35 who's out of shape. Yes. Because nobody who's in shape is gonna walk up to you the way your body looks and go, you know what, I think you're too much. No fit person is gonna say that. Somebody out of shape who wishes they were in shape. So I've actually, I'm trying to take it down.
Starting point is 00:57:50 I've actually had comments where I'm gonna go on a trip with a bunch of friends or whatever and we're gonna be at a pool or whatever. And they'll comment and be like, oh fuck, South's coming, I better start working out or something. Oh God, I know. Because it makes, it does make other people, it's like a mirror to someone.
Starting point is 00:58:08 Like, you know, I have, okay, so I had a friend who she's a mom and she loves working out. She listens to the show religiously. She started with maps and a ballic and she's done maps aesthetic and she looks phenomenal. She's got a phenomenal physique. And at the time when I was married, you know, my ex, I could tell it kind of bothered her a little bit. And mainly it's because
Starting point is 00:58:32 this other woman also had a job, also had kids, and yet looks fit and feels fantastic. And my ex was threatened by it because what is, like, if you're, okay, if you're looking at some 20 year old girl who doesn't have kids and whatever, it's easy for you to be like, oh well of course she looks like that, it's because she's got, she has all the time in the world. But now she's looking at someone with a similar life who's also very fit and you feel threatened by it. So it has nothing to do with you and it has everything to do with the other person.
Starting point is 00:58:59 It's threatening to them because they themselves, it's a mirror held up to their face and them saying, oh shit, I don't feel good about myself. You know, I don't feel fit or whatever I feel insecure. But I mean, again, if you have a health relationship. It's a compliment. It's a total compliment. Yeah. If you can walk into a gym and you can get someone to say something to you, it doesn't
Starting point is 00:59:20 even matter if it's negative or not. It means that you're without speaking, your physique has triggered somebody else, whether it's triggered for the positive, where they come over and they say, oh my God, you look amazing, or triggered them for the bad to feel insecure about themselves and walk over and say, you know, that's too much. At the end of the day, it's a fucking compliment
Starting point is 00:59:38 because you've got a physique that's that bad ass. Right, just reply with this. It always gets people to shut the fuck up. When someone comes up she's saying, hey, don't you think you have too much muscle now? I'd be like, no, I love it. And that's it, it's over. I love it.
Starting point is 00:59:51 What are they gonna say now? Right. We know. Oh, but you don't think it's too much? No, no, I love it. I enjoy it. And then just change the conversation. Don't let it bother you whatsoever
Starting point is 00:59:59 and watch what happens to them. It really fucks with them. They'll destroy them. Oh yeah. Yeah. Next question is from Sarah Ford. Do you think having a higher level of education in a health exercise science degree program
Starting point is 01:00:13 would help someone have an edge in the fitness industry in the future? Absolutely. Yeah, I definitely can. Absolutely. Definitely can, especially if you're specialized. So if you're like you're training special population, like the elderly or you're working with injuries or rehab,
Starting point is 01:00:30 then higher education in health and exercise is a huge plus. Because when you're dealing with like rehab, for example, you need to have a different level of understanding of biomechanics, the human body, muscles, how to diagnose, how to correct things or whatever, then just your typical personal trainer. That being said, it's not a guarantee that you're going to have an edge because I think going to school and doing a science degree like that, it's like it's all you're doing
Starting point is 01:01:03 is you're adding all of these tools in your belt. You still, if you're going to be a mechanic, right, and you're going to go and doing a science degree like that. It's like, all you're doing is you're adding all these tools in your belt. You still, if you're gonna be a mechanic, right, and you're gonna go fix people, at the end of the day, your reps is gonna be the best thing for you, right? And we preached that all the time about, you know, I mean, I sound I didn't even finish our college. So I think that reps are, but I'll tell you what,
Starting point is 01:01:20 it was, you know, I had to, I used the wrong wrench a bunch of times, you know what I'm saying? And then I had to figure it out and use it. And then I found the right tool where bunch of times. You know what I'm saying? And then I had to figure it out and use it. And then I found the right tool where, when you go to school like that, they supply you with all these great tools. And then it's for you to go out there
Starting point is 01:01:33 and apply those tools and that knowledge that you got from school. And I think that the combination of two of those can make you a fucking triple threat. I think it's an incredible strength for you to get that annual of an edge. Yeah, if you're very passionate about it and you're going through the education like at school and you're getting a lot out of it, of course, that's going to translate to you in the field and it's going to carry with you and have an advantage from that aspect.
Starting point is 01:01:59 I think that just the way that it's structured and the way that I went through college and the education process, it was like this mad hustle to get through it. And I was like, the whole time I'm just trying to, it still is dude, I'm just trying to get through it. It's still it, it's convoluted. There's all these different things at once that you're trying to study.
Starting point is 01:02:20 And I knew that I really loved biomechanics and I loved everything I was learning, but I didn't have the chance to really fully immerse myself in it. What do you guys think? I think that we should have, I think college should be like, everyone in chapter high school do like a year of working and then you go to college, I feel like. Work first. Yeah, work first for a year just so you can get a little feel of what it's like. Honestly, that would be fantastic.
Starting point is 01:02:43 Isn't there a country where that, I don't know, but I think there should be more, just simultaneous even. What does it call like trade internship? There needs to be more like trade school stuff. Right, right. Let's say you want to be a personal trainer, I think a very smart program would be to go be an apprentice
Starting point is 01:03:01 for a year under a master trainer. You'll learn way more in that fucking year than you would going to take, you know, listen to lectures and stuff like that. In classrooms because there's so much you learn on the job in fitness that you can't necessarily learn in a classroom. I've hired, most of the trainers that I've hired
Starting point is 01:03:20 in the past had far more education than me. Most of them, a lot of them did. And I taught them a lot of what they learned about personal training because I had zero experience. Doing it, they just had the, they understood the books of it and they understood the concepts and the terms, but they didn't know how to apply it.
Starting point is 01:03:36 Now when I think of higher level of education, I don't necessarily think of college when it comes to fitness. Today, you can enjoy and take advantage of taking different courses and learn different things like you could take the, you know, Dr. Spinez class, you know, you could take, you know, you could do El Doa, you could do check certifications which are very different from any SM type certifications which are very different from, you know, some of these other fitness services.
Starting point is 01:04:04 Oh, man, if you just go through, what you, if you just do that, I tell you what, you go through the ones you just named right now, and you're gonna blow the doors off of most people that were four years in their, their Kinesh degree for sure. If you talk, you talk, FRC, you talk about,
Starting point is 01:04:19 check, and ASM, and then what was it yet? There's another one too that we are just talking about. Oh, El Doa was good. Oh, El Doa, yeah. So those, I mean, because you're gonna, and ASM and then the WZF, there's another one too that we are just talking about. Oh, El Doa was good. Oh, El Doa, yeah. So those, I mean, because you're gonna address, that's actually before, so those, the cool thing about certifications
Starting point is 01:04:33 and these kind of courses is that a lot of this information is cutting edge and it will probably be taught later on in the schools, you know what I'm saying? But they're just, you're not gonna learn them there. Right. No, it's so true. I mean, the check, Paul checked alone, his course is alone.
Starting point is 01:04:50 He's been talking about things like gut health, 20 years ago, course, stability, training, and all those other things. Like way before, he was laughed at for a long time before anybody else, but if you had tick, if you'd take his course, you would've been ahead of the curve. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:05:05 So that's the other thing you could do. Listen, before we sign off, I'm gonna give you your tip of the week. I wanna talk about about five minutes on occlusion training. It's not that often in the 20 years that I've been in fitness where something has really blown me away in terms of its efficacy
Starting point is 01:05:25 and it's that something actually that's different. Occlusion training is one of those things. Now occlusion training is when you take, and I'm going to use the arms as an example, I'll take a knee wrap and I'll wrap it around my upper arm right where my shoulder meets my bicep or right up in the armpit area. And I'll wrap it around my arm and I'll do it tight enough to occlude or prevent some of the blood outflow. So in other words, I'm not tying it off so tight that I'm cutting off the circulation to my arms, but I'm tying it off tight enough so that blood can glow into the muscle, but
Starting point is 01:06:00 it doesn't come out as easily. Then I go do some exercises and I get this intense pump, way, way more intense than you normally would because I'm actually amplifying what happens with a normal pump. You also get this really crazy burn because what occluding is doing is it's preventing waste from removing,
Starting point is 01:06:22 or it's preventing, excuse me, waste removal. So as the blood is pumping out of the muscle, it's also removing waste. But if I include it, that waste builds up in the muscle, which gives me this crazy burn. My muscles fatigue very quickly, but that waste build up is what stimulates muscle growth, and it happens very quickly, and it produces a little bit of damage. The cool thing about that is you can add occlusion training to your routine and not compromise your recovery like you would if you added another five sets of heavy barbell curls or whatever.
Starting point is 01:06:56 And occlusion works best for the extremities. So biceps triceps, quads, hamstrings and calves. It's extremely effective, literally adding a occlusion to your workouts once or twice a week. You'll notice a difference in your muscle size with no joke within a couple weeks. There's a lot of science supporting it also. It's not something that, it's something that we just learned about rather recently, I'd say over the last five
Starting point is 01:07:22 years, but it's actually been studied for several decades. It originated in Japan and there's probably, I don't know, 50 or 100 studies that have been done on it to show that it's effective and safe. You're seeing people using it in rehab, physical therapy offices, athletes are starting to use it, bodybuilders are starting to use it. So it's a very interesting tool.
