Starting point is 00:00:25 Yes, you energy, energy for everything. Captain Banner now to our podcast. This is Murder with my husband. I'm Peyton Moreland. And I'm Garrett Moreland. And he's the husband. And I'm the husband. Well, welcome back to another episode. Do you have your 10 seconds, Ready? Um, I didn't have it ready, but I got a haircut this week.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I don't know if that counts. It counts, it counts with your 10 seconds. Okay, I'll count. Yes, everyone get on YouTube and go look at Garrett's new haircut. Bada bean, bada boom. It looks very good. I probably don't look much different to anyone else,
Starting point is 00:01:21 except you. No, you think so? I mean, he's noticeable. OK, so our case this week was suggested by Jade Cook off of Instagram. So thank you, Jade. The sources I used are YouTube, ABA, journal.com, biography.com, crimeuseam.org, Wikipedia, ABCNews.gov, vanity vanity fair.com, and all that's interesting.com. Can I just say I've used Wikipedia so much, I don't always use it as my initial...
Starting point is 00:01:53 Murderedipedia are Wikipedia. Both, there's both. But I've used it, I use it almost every case, I don't always use information off of it, but I use it just to get an overview. I use it so much now that every single time I go to Wikipedia, it says, hey, we notice you use a lot. You use our site a lot. It would be nice if you would donate.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Oh, yeah, because they run off donations. Mm-hmm. Yeah. But I use it so much now that they're like, you're a frequent user. It would be nice if you could donate. That's funny. Anyways, with this week's episode starts off in Boston, Massachusetts in May of 2008. An unidentified man begins messaging a transgender woman.
Starting point is 00:02:31 I would normally not include such a non-impactful detail, but it does go to the thought process of this man, which is why I'm including it in the story. So on May 2nd, he messaged, hey, sexy, using the email address sex addict 5385 at Yahoo.com. They proceed to exchange explicit photos. He reaches out again in January of 2009 using a different username, but they still never meet in person. This mystery man had contacted several men
Starting point is 00:03:04 who had posted ads through Craigslist labeled M4T, which means men looking for transvestites. Keep in mind, this is 2008. So this is no longer an option on Craigslist, but back then it was an option that you could use. I don't even know that. Yes. It was under the tab exotic or something like that. He was consistently using new user names and even posting as a female at one point. This game went on for a while but eventually was taken to the extreme. On April 10, 2009, 29-year-old Trisha leftler was working as an escort in Boston. That night, she checked herself into the
Starting point is 00:03:45 Western hotel and placed an ad on Craigslist as sweet blonde come and relax with me. Our man answered her ad and agreed to meet up with her. When Trisha answered the door at the hotel, she wasn't worried. This man was young, blonde hair, looked nice, not threatening at all. She welcomes him into the room, but as soon as the door shuts, Trisha turns around and finds herself staring down a pistol. This mystery man who had previously just been messaging with people was literally holding Trisha at gunpoint in a hotel room. His obsession had obviously gone too far. He tells her nothing will
Starting point is 00:04:26 happen to her and tells her to lay down. Trisha does and the man puts the gun back in his pocket and puts on gloves. He takes out zip ties and ties her wrists up like handcuffs. He then takes off the gloves. So he puts on these gloves to like hive's identity, but then in the middle of this attack takes off the gloves. That's kind of weird. And Trisha notes it. She's like, why is he taking the gloves off if he's, you know, he takes off the gloves, and searches through her purse, and takes $800 in cash that she had in there. And along with her credit and debit cards, he then grabbed her phone and deleted his number out of it, and then picked up a pair of her underwear and put them in his pocket
Starting point is 00:05:07 That's I picked up a pair. That's what like the sources call it. I don't know if that meant he took her underwear off or If you grab the one from like this, I don't know whatever the man then leaves Like he was only there for the money or for the scare. He never sexually assaults her or anything like that. So before we go on 2008, I mean, that's a while ago, but I mean, I know there was cameras and stuff like that. Yes, it's a security camera. I'm just saying, there are.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I had to have caught him. And they did. Okay. And it finally, the cameras come in handy. I saw a word episode 46 now. Yeah, I never research a case now and not look to see if there's cameras sold because I know Gary is going to ask me if there was.
Starting point is 00:05:51 It's my number one thing. So this becomes a big part of this case later on as the cameras. He leaves, Trisha quickly gets out of her ties and checks the people out of the hotel room. She opens the door, peaks her head out, doesn't see him, and so she calls security. Police respond and find photo stills of our perpetrator in the hotel on the cameras.
Starting point is 00:06:13 They check them with Trisha, and she confirms, yeah, that's him leaving my room. Got it. No, I don't think this guy was dumb enough to not realize there'd be security cameras. I think he was just cocky enough to think. Number one, technically at the time, what Trisha was doing was illegal. Like soliciting yourself was illegal at the time. So why would she report it if she was robbed? And number two, even if she
Starting point is 00:06:37 did, would the police care about an escort being robbed, which is horrible. But there have been known cases of police not caring about that type of industry, any crime that happens there because of it. I've seen law in order enough with you to know that that's the case. Yes. So would they even dive in enough to pull the security footage? I think his pride and lack of respect for his victim got in the way in this case, right? According to allisinteresting.com, on April 13th, 2009, our man, who just attacked her, now responds to an add on Craigslist under the erotic services section.
Starting point is 00:07:16 The category would later be changed to adult services in the wake of this guy's actions. Oh, okay. However, in 2010 Craigsless then removed adult services completely. So they changed it after what happened and then completely removed the category. The ad creator was a 25-year-old named Jolissa Brisman, a masseuse and aspiring model. They were messaging back and forth both using fake names. He was going by Andy.
Starting point is 00:07:44 She was going by Morgan. They never spoke over the phone just via email or text and the mystery man was using a disposable phone which leads me to believe that he was completely in on this like committed what he was doing. You know, totally. He decides to meet up with her and after much back and forth they agree on April 14th. Morgan, who is actually Jolissa, states that she is visiting Boston for three days and had a hotel room on the 20th floor of the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
Starting point is 00:08:14 Now both hotels I've mentioned are luxury hotels. Like they are nice hotels. Yeah, I didn't know that. Yeah. Andy, who is actually our unidentified perpetrator, tells her that he too is visiting Boston and is interested in a 10 p.m. or later appointment tonight or tomorrow. He just happens to be visiting Boston.
Starting point is 00:08:33 He then emails again saying that he could still come tonight, but tomorrow at 10 might be better if not, but he will still make it tonight if that's what works for her. Julisa replies that she could do tomorrow or tonight and he says, okay, let's do tomorrow 10 p.m. The next night, Andy, who is our unknown perpetrator, calls at 941, he had arrived early. Jelisa worked at a tanning salon like in her day job. Okay. And the owner of that salon would screen Jelisa's massage client. So that's what she put the add on out for was a massage. So the owner of the tanning salon would screen Jolissa's clients to make sure it's gonna be safe and everything like that.
Starting point is 00:09:12 And she also would communicate with the client so it wasn't actually Jolissa at the time of the appointment. So when he called, he called the tanning salon owner. So there was massages at tanning slants? No, she did massages on Craigslist ads on her off time. Oh, but the owner would screen them for her. Yeah, so this is, I don't know the word and this is going to be a negative connotation, but think of it like a pimp, but it wasn't a pimp.
Starting point is 00:09:37 She was just like going over all of her clients in a way, and she did it for multiple people. Does that make sense? Yes, so I mean, she was just running a way. Like, and she did it for multiple people. Does that make sense? Yes. So I mean, she uses running a business. Yes. Yes. The owner of the salon takes the call from our guy. Text Jelisa to tell her, Hey, you're 10 o'clock's here. You know, you can go ahead and head up to the room. Yep. And she relates. He's, he was early, but I told him to just come at 10. And Jelisa's like, Awesome. I'll go up. So when Andy entered, which Andy's our guy entered, Julie says room, he immediately pulled the gun on her as well. What the heck? He was tying her
Starting point is 00:10:12 wrists. And while he's attempting to do that, Julie suffice back. Oh, no, he reacts by hitting Julie's in the head with the butt of the gun. He then shoots her twice. Although she was injured and down. So he hits her twice. Although she was injured and down. So he hits her. She's injured. She's down on the floor. And even though she's down on the floor, he proceeds to shoot her twice. Yeah. He turns and runs out of the room. Jalisa, like, is there by the door? And Jalisa falls out of the door as he leaves. Oh, okay. The door closes, but she's halfway and halfway out. So the door closes onto like her body. Yeah, but that's a good thing because now someone knows when they walk about it.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Now she's not hidden in the room. Yeah. So a neighbor in the hotel room heard the gunshots, obviously. Oh, he didn't have like a silence or anything. No. So the a neighboring hotel room books their head out of the door and sees Jelisa hanging half in, half out of her doorway, not moving. So security is called and they immediately figure out that she's been shot. Paramedics arrive, but less than an hour later, Jelisa Brickman dies at the Boston Medical Center. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Yeah. Police dub, this unknown man who has now done this twice, the Craigslist killer. Okay. Because they put together the connection that he had met both women off of Craigslist. And so how old is he again? We don't know yet. Oh, but you said it looked like he was in his 20s, right?
Starting point is 00:11:34 He looked young, yes. He's now attacked a woman and killed one of the women, right? And police in Boston are now scoping out the nice hotels ready for this guy's next hit, because these were pretty back-to-back in two nice hotels. So just two days after the Craigslist killer killed Jalisa, he went out again, this time,
Starting point is 00:11:58 60 miles away from downtown Boston at a holiday in an oric road island. Do you think he would be smart enough to after he just shot someone? Like, oh, I probably should lay low for a little bit. And I think he lays low by moving 60 miles away and not picking a luxury hotel. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 00:12:17 But they're still gonna put two and two together if this girl comes forward. Yeah, like the cops aren't dumb. But the victim was a dancer from Las Vegas and I'm purposely leaving her name out. So it's not that I'm not done. But the victim was a dancer from Las Vegas, and I'm purposely leaving her name out. So it's not that I'm not trying to honor the victim. She just doesn't want to be named. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:31 She advertised on Craigslist for private dances in her hotel room. She opens her door and clean cut young looking. The Craigslist killer is waiting for her. She welcomes him in, turns around to talk to him after the door closes, and the Craigslist killer has the gun drawn and pointed out her once again. Oh my gosh. It seems like he's kind of like Ted Bundy in the sense, I'm starting to know a couple more cases. But he's kind of like Ted Bundy in the sense that he was good-looking,
Starting point is 00:13:02 so people see him and immediately go, oh, he can't kill me, everything's fine. Yeah, they do make it a point that like these girls scope out, as soon as they open the door, they scope out, does this fill odd, does this not fill odd. And most of them come forward saying, I felt very comfortable with his how he looked. But I felt comfortable letting him in. There was nothing about him that made me feel like,
Starting point is 00:13:24 maybe I shouldn't let this guy in. Totally. This show is sponsored by BetterHelp. Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads unsure of which direction to take in life? We all face those moments of uncertainty where the right path seems elusive. But guess what?

I know you guys have both heard the story about how Garrett and I were both paying separately for peacock. And then we used rocket money
Starting point is 00:14:38 and realized how dumb we are and are so happy rocket money helped us stop doing that. Rocket money is a personal finance app that finds and cancels your unwanted subscriptions, monitors your spending and helps you lower your bills all in one place. And like Payton said, I'm always on it, checking things out, seeing what's going on, seeing how many Amazon packages Payton are buying.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Is that how you find out about my Amazon packages? No, I just get emails. Oh my gosh. This is my email on the account. Over 3 million people have already used rocket money saving the average person of the 720 lbs a year. Imagine what you could do with that extra cash and your pocket. Stop throwing your money away. Cancel on one of the subscriptions and manager expenses the easy way by going to rocket money dot com slash husband. That's rocket money dot com slash
Starting point is 00:15:20 husband. Rocket money dot com slash husband. But this time as he's holding the gun at her, he's shaking. She notes that he's shaking as he's holding the gun at her. Okay. He says, I'm broke. I just need your cards and money. So it's no longer like this fun game. He just like comes in and it's once he just wants money. Yeah, like I'm broken.
Starting point is 00:15:44 I need your money. Okay. She goes take whatever you need. Like I don't care. Just don't hurt me. He ties her up with the zip ties, lays her down and begins searching around the room. While the Craigslist killer is searching the room, the victim's phone is ringing over and over again in the corner. Oh no. Little did they did he know it was her husband who was actually waiting downstairs in the lobby of the hotel for an okay text from her. Meaning he would stay down there and she would text him for the appointment say he's here everything's good. We're starting the appointment. Yes. So the husband she never got the text. So he's calling her and she's not answering, which is smart. It's smart on her end. It's like a bodyguard, like if they're just in case. It's also kind of hard though,
Starting point is 00:16:29 because that's something I do to you. I say, hey, when you get there, when you get there, text me, but you never text me. And I never show up to where you're at. So if that ever happens, you're kind of scared. Well, you're just used to me not, you're just used to me not texting. But that's kind of scary,
Starting point is 00:16:43 if I ever need you to say, okay, you never text me. Well, I'll work on it. I'll work with it. So anyways, he doesn't receive the text. So he starts making his way up to the room to check on her. Keep in mind, he has a key card. It's his wife who is in the hotel room. So he has the second key card.
Starting point is 00:16:59 So he just walks up to the room, puts the key in and opens the door. Like he doesn't knock or anything. He's just like, I need to figure out what's going on. And he walks into a scene that he will probably never forget. His wife is on the floor tied up and this guy is rummaging through the room. And he has a gun. Exactly. The Craigslist killer turns and points the gun at the husband, but the husband is already
Starting point is 00:17:21 turned back around out the door and running down the hall to get help, like making a scene. He's like, I'm not gonna take this guy on. I'm gonna turn around and be as loud as I can to try to get help. And the Craigslist killer is like, oh crap, Panics runs out the door as well, turning the other way in heads
Starting point is 00:17:38 from the opposite direction as the husband. He is caught on security camera in a stairwell as he makes his way out of the hotel, but he does get out of the hotel because he goes the opposite way. Showing his face, two victims, and security cameras was undoubtedly a mistake, but like I said, I think the Craigslist killer is just too prideful at this point. I really think he just wants money. Yes, he's just robbing people. I mean, I feel that way too, but once we hear the rest of the story I'm interested to see if your mind is changed.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Okay, okay. They call these attacks the seven days of rage as he's just seems to be going back to back and never stops. So it wasn't until one of Julisa's friends, olissa's our victim who died. One of her friends actually locates the emails on Jolissa's phone between Jolissa and Andy, who is actually the Craigslist killer. And she goes to the cops and she's like, hey, I found this. And I'm kind of like, why didn't the cops have the phone? Search for this, but I don't know. I don't know the situation, but go her friend who figured this out. And she goes to the cops and and she goes can't you trace this IP address?
Starting point is 00:18:46 Like can't you do that? Why why weren't the cops doing this? I don't know which for 2009 is pretty smart of her to know that That was like possible. But she goes if if this is if these emails are sent from his home can't you trace the IP address and the cops are like Yeah, we can't actually Hello, I don't know I don't want to judge, but it feels a little weird to me that after I mean and keep in mind It's only been like a week Yeah, but the friend was the one who went to the cops and said hey, I dug through her phone and located the emails Here they are can you trace this you know detectives trace the IP address and are led to a small suburb outside of Boston It's to an apartment in Quincy,
Starting point is 00:19:26 which is just like a city. I'm specifically an apartment belonging to a man named Philip Markov. The kicker, they are stunned when they identify Philip Markov, the Craigslist killer, as a very, very successful med student who led in above average life and was due to be married to another beautiful med student in August of that year.
Starting point is 00:19:51 No way. Yes. They had to be wrong. This man surely could not be the broke insecure mischievous perp who was literally using women just to turn around and rob them. And saying, I'm broke. Yeah, like he said, he said I'm broke. Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:06 So in May of 2008, so before the first attack, when the first promiscuous messages began between the Craigslist killer and these people online, Philip Markoff was a serious well-behaved young man who was active in extracurricular activities. According to Kalina Fraga with all that's interesting.com, he was described as a nice young man who was polite, respectful, and funny. Both of his parents were remarried and he had a brother. Oh, so weird. Philip was smart, pretty academically gifted. He wasn't the most popular in high school, but it wasn't like he wasn't either. Does that make sense? He just had friends. What even is popularity though? Honestly, unless it
Starting point is 00:20:52 has to do with this podcast, then I want to be the most popular true character podcast. But I mean, in high school, really, what is popularity? So when Philip turned 23, he was studying at University of Albany or sunny Albany, SUNY Albany, it's like a nickname for the school. I looked it up. It's the same school, but like it's called two different things. He had graduated college in just three years at the top of his class and was easily accepted into the very hard to get into prestigious medical school of Boston University.
Starting point is 00:21:25 So he was at like one of the top medical schools at that time in the nation. Top of his class, he's a star. He's a star medical student like he will be an amazing doctor. Yeah, this is confusing. He was intending to pursue a career as a doctor when he met a girl named Megan McAllister. They both volunteered at a medical center near campus together. Get this. It's the same center where his soon to be victim, Jalisa, had been rushed after he had shot her. Was the same medical center. He was like falling. I mean, it's called like
Starting point is 00:21:58 their residency. It's like when you volunteer, whatever. What a coincidence. Right. Or did he know or was he playing? I don't think think so I just think it happened to be the closest one that she would have been rushed to Philip seemed to be doing really well in his life and industry and Megan the girl he met was immediately attracted to him she asked him out on a date she was a few years older than him but it worked out and after three years Philip asked Megan to marry him on the beach, and their wedding date was set for August 14, 2009. I'm so confused.
Starting point is 00:22:29 And I do need to say, like, he was popular once he got to college. Like he was top of his class. Every single med student looked up to him. All of his professors had a great relationship with him. Like, he was definitely riding that high of being super smart, super attractive, like good, good, like, you know. And so together the two of the two doctors,
Starting point is 00:22:56 this is the med students, and she's also very, very beautiful. We're leading a nice life, but there was one thing that only they knew about, and that was that Philip was $130,000 in debt because medical school doesn't come cheap. It's true, but expensive. Yes, it doesn't matter how many academic scholarships you can get. And on top of that, he had a gambling addiction. Oh, okay. So although that was the one secret that the couple shared together, each individual has their own secrets, and Phillips was that he was the Craigslist killer.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Yeah, apparently. Yeah, so, police begin staking out Phillips apartment. They are just waiting for this guy. So they know what he looks like because of the security footage, and they know the IP address is there, but they don't know his name. They just know the IP address. So they're waiting for this guy, the security footage guy, to come walking out of this apartment.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Essentially, they're just waiting for this blonde, clean cut, boy, next door looking kid to come walking out. They eventually do see Philip come out of his apartment and get a hold of one of the victims to get a positive ID, but she can't come down yet. And so this is only a week after Jalissa was murdered, so keep that in mind. They get a hold of one of the victims who survived,
Starting point is 00:24:10 and said, can you come ID him? And she's like, I can't come down right this second. And I don't know if it's because she was still struggling, and it was gonna be difficult for her to make an ID or there was something going on. But if they saw him on camera, that means that enough. I'm confused. Well, they need the evidence of having an eyewitness victim. Okay. or there was something going on. But if they saw him on camera, that means that enough. I'm confused.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Well, they need the evidence of having an eyewitness victim. OK. And the camera footage is blurry. Like, and he's wearing a hat. And he's good. He never looks directly at the camera. OK. So it looks like him, but it also a positive ID
Starting point is 00:24:39 from a living victim would. Would make it more. Yes. For them. Shortly after police begin the stakeout, they notice that Philip and his fiancee Megan come out of the apartment with suitcases. Police follow them and worry when they realize that they are heading out of state, which means they lose jurisdiction. The second he leaves the state. So they quickly get a hold of Trisha,
Starting point is 00:25:00 the living victim. They send her a photo of him and other guys and say, can you please identify which man was your attacker? Why didn't they do this the first? Because they wanted her to do it in person. They wanted to bring him in and do it like a lineup. It would just be better, but they were like, he's leaving. So we have no choice. So they get a photo to her.
Starting point is 00:25:17 She positively identifies Philip as the guy who attacked her. So back on the interstate, police pull over Philip and Megan, take them into custody and inform Philip that he's under arrest for armed robbery and murder. So you have to keep in mind. I feel like she knows. Megan, the wife, yeah, the fiance is completely blindsided. Why are we getting pulled over right now? What's going on? What's going on? Like, okay, I was wrong. No, yeah, no no idea They bring her in and tell her like he's the Craigslist killer because everyone had kind of been seeing the reports You believe that like if someone came to our house right now and took us in and said Garrett's a serial killer
Starting point is 00:25:57 I would say no, but Megan says no. I know, but I know I'm saying like it would be hard to believe Oh, I agree. I don't think it's bad that Megan doesn't believe that. You be like, Garrett. I love you. You're talking about it. Megan's the same thing. Like he, you have the wrong guy. This guy is not the Craig's list killer. And they say, listen, you can't go home because now a currently your apartment is like, we have custody of it. And so you need to fly home to your parents' house. So she does because Philip's staying in custody. Police then inform all of the Craigslist killers, living victims that he's in custody. And the public is completely shocked
Starting point is 00:26:35 when they find out that this, the suspect who's been arrested for the Craigslist killer, this like evil guy who's been literally going to hotels and robbing people blind is literally the boy next door is the top meds soon at Boston University. I'm sure the public was like they have the wrong guy. There's no way. There was a lot of people who was who were like what? Yeah. And even Megan, she's like there's absolutely no way like I live with this guy. There's no way he's doing this. Although Megan goes away with her family,
Starting point is 00:27:06 she comes back to Phillips' defense through the media stating that he's a beautiful man inside and out, he literally would never hurt a fly. They have the wrong man, the Boston police are just trying to make a story out of this, like they do with everything else. But what in the police show her the evidence at this point? They did. And she didn't believe it.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Mm-hmm. She's like, that's not him. That's didn't believe it. Mm-hmm. Okay. She's like, that's not him. That's not like this, it's not him. Okay. Police search their apartment that they share together. And they find the gun that was used in the crimes. So this is like the most, yes.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Like they might ask the bullets and everything. Yes, this is the best evidence they could ask for. It's open and shut case. Like there's no doubt he's the Craigslist killer. But the best part is they find this gun in a hollowed out anatomy book for medical students, literally like in prison. He took a scalpel, carved out the gun shape in the book,
Starting point is 00:27:59 in his medical book that he used for studying, cut it out, put the gun in, close the top, and put it with his books. How did they even think to look in there? They... Oh, I don't know. I was about to say, I watched like a movie remake on this. It's a lifetime movie, and they like threw the book up and it opened, but I'm sure that's not how it happened. I'm sure that was just in the movie. I was literally about to answer, oh, they threw it up on the bed. I can't believe they found them in the book. Yeah, so, yeah. I was literally about to answer all these things up on the day. I can't believe they found them in the book.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Yeah, so yeah. They also find Trisha's underwear under Phillip's mattress. Oh, no, it's horrible. They're like, yeah, we've got the proof we need. Kicker, there's more pairs of unidentified underwear under the mattress. So police immediately realize that Phillip has other victims who have not come forward.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Probably because of the industry and the danger of them coming forward. And so they were like, wow, like he's done this more than just this week that we've found out about. So police think that Philip got off on the thrill of the robbery and scaring the victims. Like a journal in the rough? Yes. That it wasn't so much about the money. It was more just like the kink and then the money was the bonus.
Starting point is 00:29:14 But I personally feel like it was about the money. I kind of think so too, because I think he had a gambling addiction. He was in debt. Anybody also wanted a professor to loan? Yes. And he probably was also lying to his fiance, saying how much money he had and he would get that by stealing. Yes. And do I think he's a good guy?
Starting point is 00:29:33 No. By no means, I think this guy is a good guy. But I think it was the mixture of not so great dude being put in a situation where he's living this double life of being this amazing med student and under all this pressure, but he's also a gambling addict and $130,000 in debt. I mean, he was taking underwear. So maybe this is what I mean. Maybe he did get off. Maybe he did get off. And you have to think about the messages. He was sending these erotic messages with these men and women before he started robbing them.
Starting point is 00:30:06 I think he just realized I can take this, I can take this obsession I've had with these online relationships I've created and actually meet them in person, but to me it's like he doesn't, he doesn't have the sex. Yeah, I don't know, it's weird. So I don't know. To me it's a weird, I can't, I mean, police seemed like really solid on why he was doing it, but I don't know. It's weird. So I don't know. To me, it's a weird. I can't. I mean, police seemed like really solid on why he was doing it, but I don't feel that way. Yeah. Jumping into an ad and it is native. I use their body wash. I use their shampoo.
Starting point is 00:30:37 We use their sunscreen, everything. Or deodorant. We are big native fans over here. When it comes out that before the crime spree, Philip had been messaging with men or transgenderers, and his username was sex addict 5385.
Starting point is 00:31:50 The public was ruthless, as you can imagine, especially in 2008, 2009. They found profiles for Philip on many sexual websites about dominance and submission, and I do just want to clarify. The bad part about this is that Philip was living a double life and killing someone that he met. It wasn't that this... He was looking at this stuff up.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Yeah, it's not that these sites themselves were bad. Psychologists suggest that Philip's public persona as a successful medical student was in war with this other side of him. And this is known as a fractured identity and can result in violence. It's someone living two lives that eventually it just come bus. Okay. In February of 2009, Philip used a fake ID to buy the gun that he would go on and use in these crimes. He planned
Starting point is 00:32:38 this out. Okay. The DA makes a plea for any victim of Phillips to come forward because they know there's more, but as you can imagine, due to the situation, no one else comes forward. And so the underwear that was found under the mattress, please, are unable to identify. Yeah. It comes out that not only is Philip in debt from med school at Boston University, which they did quickly expel him right after his arrest. I would hope so.
Starting point is 00:33:02 He also was in debt from the gambling, but he has given a good lawyer pro bono. So he doesn't have to pay for the lawyer because he's broke, but this lawyer is known for getting criminals off. Like he's very good lawyer. And I mean, he's still the boy next door. So this is an attractive case for a lawyer who's wanting to grow his reputation.
Starting point is 00:33:21 But with how much evidence there is, it seems weird that they would still take it. Yeah, he pleads not guilty his indictment, who's wanting to grow as reputed. But how much evidence there is, it seems weird that they would still take it. Yeah. He pleads not guilty his indictment, even though the evidence is like, you can't even argue. I found the gun, the underwear. The underwear, they have positive IDs.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Why do you have a gun, hold it out in your book, it's just for fun. Literally. Just for fun. It just helps me get the anatomy down more. Yeah. Open it up and I don't actually read the pages,
Starting point is 00:33:42 I just stare at the book. I learn a lot. So Megan visits fill up in gel and tells them that the wedding is off. She tells them in person, hey, just so you know, we're not getting married anymore. And you know, as as much as I I hurt for the living victims and also for Jalisa, who passed away. Yeah, I hurt for Megan as well. Yeah. Like this, she was can her life got completely turned upside down. Yeah, she was engaged. Yeah, I hurt for making as well. I agree. Like this, she was complete. Her life got completely turned upside down. Yeah, she was engaged.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Yeah. Yeah, my heart also goes out to her and her family and also to all of the victims. I think sometimes we think, oh, they weren't sexually assaulted. They didn't die. It's not that bad of an attack. It's still the scariest thing that you could ever go through. And the most traumatic thing, and I promise you,
Starting point is 00:34:23 that all of them had so much trauma at their... It's no different if someone were to break into your home. No. You'd probably not want to live there anymore, right? It would be horrible. So we still need to understand and have respect for the fact that this was a bad thing and a crime. He please not guilty.
Starting point is 00:34:39 And according to ABAjournal.com, the evidence against him includes a nine millimeter semi-automatic handgun hidden in the hollowed out copy of the anatomy book, a New York driver's license in the name of Andrew Miller, which he used to purchase the gun. Bullets matching those used to kill Brisbane taped to the back of his dryer. Plastic ties a stash of women's underwear, a black leather jacket, a New York Yankees cap, which he was using. A lot of evidence. That was all in the video.
Starting point is 00:35:08 And a pair of brown leather shoes that actually have one of his victims blood on them. So everything. So everything. 16 months after being caught as the Craigslist killer, and before he goes to trial, on what would have been his first wedding anniversary with Megan. Philip Markov takes his own life in gel after trying three other times butt failing. This time he slashed his neck and legs with a pen and keep in mind he is a medical student so he hit his arteries. But before he dies he writes Megan's name on his cell wall in blood and then climbs under a blanket and dies. Oh, how would like crazy?
Starting point is 00:35:51 I don't know how it's just like that since I do think he loved her. I don't think his relationship with her was fake. I truly do believe he was living two lives. Like I don't I think his his feelings for her were real But I think he is a human just didn't have the capacity to understand that's not normal. Like what you're doing is not normal. Yeah. Yeah. That's crazy. Yeah. It's just the whole case is weird out of it. He just started robbing people and killed someone and stealing their underwear and yeah. Personally, for me, I'm not a not a psychologist obviously and I'm not a behavior analyst at all I personally think he just liked living this this King's life life yes he liked having this secret life he liked having a double persona he liked going to school and
Starting point is 00:36:38 being the King of the School and then coming home and living this other life but then as he started to get in trouble and life started to catch up to him and everything was going so fast. And he was a med student. There was $130,000 in debt. He put two and two together and realized I could rob these people. I could see that. It's that's crazy. Yeah.
