Starting point is 00:00:00 My daughter who I don't even know pay attention to my podcast Paul says Dead you had Travis Kelsey on the podcast. I see that we had them on last week. She says I said please stop right now Ladies and gentlemen boys and girls Welcome back to new heights. Oh, yeah, is that it by wave sports and entertainment brought to you by our friends at Fireball the pound to pound undisputed best shot in America. That sentiment of light takes over all the land and just sweeps you off your feet with unbelievable taste.
Starting point is 00:00:40 We are your hosts. I'm Travis Kelsey. This is my big brother Jason Kelsey out of Cleveland Heights, Ohio University of Cincinnati grads holding it down every single Wednesday for you guys with new episodes of new heights coming at you Make sure you subscribe on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts and follow the show and all social media platforms at new heights show Jason, what did you tell the 92% is what we got coming up. Man, we got in the credible show coming up guys. New.
Starting point is 00:01:06 We're gonna talk about Travis's trip to the White House, going viral as we all kind of suspected he would. We're gonna get you guys an update on the beer bowl competition we got going in the Ocean Drive in CIO, Saturday, New Jersey. And we're gonna get an absolute legendary guest on the show.
Starting point is 00:01:24 You guys are not gonna to want to miss this one. Not going to want to miss it. Not going to want to miss it. But first, as always, let me take this moment to clear up the air. Okay, Jason, because there have been some rumors started on this show by the man that I'm staring at right now. And I think it's very unfair to myself that you would start these lies about me and the trophy rumors that you started.
Starting point is 00:01:53 You talking about with the Lamberti? Ladies and gentlemen, to the 92%ers, I did not in fact break the Lombardi trophy. Ha ha ha ha. Woo! This is the real one, Jason. Look how much shinier it is that it is, Jason. It is, Jason. The one that I had, isn't it beautiful? Is that from what years after?
Starting point is 00:02:16 Well, I'd say it's the real one. So, Jason, it's... It's the real one? Yeah. I don't want to... It's isn't the poke fun at you, Jason. This isn't the poke fun at you Jason. This isn't the poke fun at you. This is just to, you know, just the world that I did not break the
Starting point is 00:02:30 Lombardi. This thing is intact, looking beautiful. Gosh, I wish I could just van a white this thing. Oh my gosh. It's a nice trophy. It's so nice to see if it works. Congratulations to the chiefs and all the players and good people that got that thing to Kansas City. Congratulations to all you fans. I mean, just a textbook. I'll fill the party. It's got to be good. It's got to be good to know that you invented an entire thing off of the Lamar.
Starting point is 00:03:03 That's a pretty good. It's pretty cool. Can we just clean this a little bit? Just a little bit. Just a little wipe. A little wipe. There we go. Take your wiping and babies. Bib off or good to go. I have to catch up off of it. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I'm just going to put that right there.
Starting point is 00:03:21 That's a good spot for it. That was right there. Right there was a good one. Dude, I told you I didn't break this thing. You did tell me. I mean, it's fucked up. You were lying to everybody. I guess. I guess. No, it's a beautiful trophy.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I'm really happy you brought out on the show. I think the beautiful one, but I'll tell you what, man. It is, it's a beautiful trophy. It's hard to be. It is hard to we as much as we gave a lot of love to Lord Stanley and the O'Brien trophy This thing is it's it's electric when you see it. Yeah, I mean I Don't think it's as good as the Stanley Cup. But I mean, it's a dope trophy. And it is a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:06 It is. I think it's more about what it represents the world champions of the NFL. I mean, that's pretty good crown. And you guys definitely got it. If there's one thing, one thing you could change about this beautiful trophy that you held before. So don't act like you've never fucking touched this thing before. Fucking guy. What is there? What is there that you would change about the beautiful Vince Lombardi trophy? Or maybe the process or winning a championship? Because I mean, there's a few different things that other leagues do that the NFL doesn't do. But I think the Lombardi trophy, I don't know, what would you change? I think it's fun that everybody gets a day with it in hockey. I think that is, that's
Starting point is 00:04:49 fun. I mean, guys have their own parades all over the off season at their own homes, and I think it's pretty cool if you could maybe give a guy an opportunity to take that back home, show everybody, maybe motivate some kids and just show everybody in their hometown what they've been able to accomplish. And I think that's pretty cool. I'll second that. I think that's probably the coolest thing about the Stanley Cup. Outside of like everybody's name being on it, but there's so many guys on every single team in the NFL and coaches and everything. That'd be hard to replicate. But I think if I was going to replicate one thing
Starting point is 00:05:25 about the Stanley Cup, it's that everybody who wins it gets to have it for a day in their hometown and it to be celebrated by all the people that help that person get there. So, man, if that was the case, Cleveland Heights, they would have got a lot of, whoo, Lombardi Trophies there, at least. All right. I don't know. Barry, Barry one. Yeah very co-field got him one South to very co-field
Starting point is 00:05:50 If I was what else would I change about it? I think I don't know why I just I feel like you know I don't know. I think the losing aspect of it Redeems the fact that there's no cup because there's a way to interact with it But yeah before like guys have always tried to figure it out, you know, Groan did the the bun You know Tom does the shot was the real one that was a groin had the real one in his hand. He did yeah The real one Tom might have had the old one. Oh, okay, the one that's at the bottom of the ocean It was secured safely, Jason. It was secured.
Starting point is 00:06:29 It's an out of the room, especially with the party. That right now, that boy's gonna lock in. I just feel like it shouldn't be a football. Do you want me to get changed the entire trophy, Jason? I just feel like football is balls, the super bowl. It should be a bowl. Should be some sort of bowl. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:44 I feel like the game is the bowl. It used to be typically played. It should be some sort of bowl. I feel like the game is the bowl. You used to do typically played in a arena or some type of bowl. It's in a bowl like, but I'm just to bring it all for full circle. It's a super bowl played in a bowl, for a bowl. It would just all kind of bring it together a little bit better. But, and you could drink out of a bowl. So it would be interactive. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:03 That's one of the other things I would choose. I think you should be a bowl. So be interactive. I don't know. That's the only thing I would say. I'll tell you what. I think you should be able. It's electric when it is good in front of you, man. I mean, honestly, it could be a doctorate. And I'd still want to win that thing. I'm going to go get it. Hey, baby. I'm going to go try and get it.
Starting point is 00:07:17 But all right, cool. Cool, baby. I'm going to take the side of here. This is the class. Thanks for bringing it on. Tell your wonderful Kansas City people there. How much I appreciate them. And God's Jason just wanted to say how much he appreciated throwing it in his face like this. So I gotta get a towel. I gotta so he can actually wipe off the accelerator that I just
Starting point is 00:07:42 said no problem, Jason. So I, um, I will say this this though, I did not know this. The chiefs are actually taking this thing on tour around the Midwest here. That is, it's going to the state house in Kansas, Amazon, not necessarily going with players, but I'm sure there'll be the chiefs will be in representation not only with the trophy, but it happens somebody from the from the office there and be able to talk about it and give some history lessons on it. But it is going around the Midwest to the state housing, Kansas, Missouri, maybe up to Nebraska and a few other states around. So it's going to make its way around the Midwest really in chief's country out here. And yeah, you guys could start the tradition of taking it to players
Starting point is 00:08:26 Like families. Yeah, yeah, that'd be pretty cool. That'd be pretty cool. I'm sure we got some people Got some family members close to the state house from somebody on the team. No, that's awesome started up Well Yeah, thank you to the chiefs for bringing that, uh, that beautiful trophy by Jason. I, um, I know it was too soon. It wasn't my idea. Um, it's not just, it's hard. It's hard.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Yeah. Sorry for that. Well, thank you for being a good, I mean, God, it's been a while since I've seen her, her him, the Lamarity. Yeah. I miss you. It misses you. It just you. It misses you. It just told me.
Starting point is 00:09:06 It misses you. Fuck off. Um, what? That was a, that was a nice way. So moving on baby. What do we got? What do we got coming up? Yep.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Travis, you got out of the house. Ha ha ha ha. Sure, deep. You got out of the house, but then you went in the house. You went to maybe the biggest house. I you went in the house. You went to maybe the biggest house, right, or the most notable house. Yes, sir. Yeah, you went to the White House. Before we get into it, which I'm sure cannot wait to talk to you about.

Starting point is 00:10:18 Grape still eat anything. Yeah, do you think they love Puparoni more or do you think they love Groundhogs more Man, they've taken out four of them I'll tell you what I don't say the nicest dog in the world. They're wolves. Whether it's a pupperoni right in front of them and they're staring right at it or a ground hog about a and I'm like get it. Get it. Winnie. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get it. Get those you get rid of that thing real quick. Thank you, pupperoni for sponsoring this segment. All right, here we go. Trav, we're going to talk about the White House visit.
Starting point is 00:11:12 It was unbelievable, man. Yeah, what was it like? Why don't you say, I guess, I don't even know where to start. What was your favorite part? Where did you go first? What was the procession? Did they ID you? That's the first thing they did and um, I
Starting point is 00:11:28 I had to go with the fake ID dude. I didn't go with the fake ID So I have the driver's license lost it so technically right now I I'm driving with a an expire 2018 Ohio driver's license, which I'm in Missouri resident now Um, you're driving with a 2018 and that's what I entered the White House with. I don't know, the Secret Service is top-wide security. Funny, what?
Starting point is 00:11:53 Funny as it is. Did they say anything? We've been saying, no, man, they were just kind of, they were checking their list and I handed them ID and I was sitting there waiting for them to tell me that you know me and I am denied access to the White House because my life is my own license. And yeah, I guess you don't need to drive to get access and I could have gave many ID that had a photo with my name on it, I guess. And
Starting point is 00:12:15 yeah, they let me in. And it's ironically the first thing that Mr. President Joe Biden, our 46th President of the United States, said to me, when I saw him, what did I say? He immediately asked me, where's my ID? Those were his first words. What? I said, Mr. President, it's a pleasure. He said, where's this guy's ID? Where's your ID? Oh, it's just like, oh no.
Starting point is 00:12:40 They confiscated it at the door. I don't have it on me. I'm just like scramble. Joe Biden is a 92%er. Look it at the door. I don't have it on me. I'm just like scramble. Joe Biden is a 92%er. Looked at the secret service. And get said, get this son of a bitch out of here. And I was like, no, I just got here.
Starting point is 00:12:51 We're in the old office. I'm like, wait, I have so much more I need to do in here. Thinking I'm gonna actually national treasure that thing. Did you national treasure anything? I did my best. Nicholas Cage in pression as soon as I walked in. Did did you national treasure anything? I did my best Nicholas cage impression As soon as I walked in and as soon as I found out that that was the energy that President Biden was gonna, you know, yeah, he'd set the tone
Starting point is 00:13:16 Yeah, he said hey, we're gonna have some fun here So the first the next thing he did was it's me Patrick coach read in the the oval office with our our President at the you know at the at the chiefs organization mark down of him shout out to MD What are my favorite guys? He um we're hanging out in the oval office and he's showing us pictures behind is the the resolute desk and grabs a picture of his grandson and grabs a picture of his grandson, peeking through the door of the Resolute Desk, like I believe Kennedy did when he was a kid. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Or Kennedy's son did, something. Yeah, right? I know it's talking about our scene. I'm around somewhere around on the same path. And he said, my grandson could get under there. Can you fit through that hole? And I was like We're about to find out
Starting point is 00:14:15 Joe don't you threaten me with a good time now. Yeah, I'm gonna take advantage of this thing Move the move the chair out of the way got under there and all I hear is Pat and everybody say dude get Get out from under that it was a joke. It was a jubber like you said in the Senate. I'm down there looking up, looking around for buttons and. And is you see any? I saw a full ass alarm system down there. All right. So they're not messing around with.
Starting point is 00:14:41 They are not fucking around on that. I realized what's like I down there. Do not touch shit. You will set the entire place off. And yeah, honestly, it was so cool hearing President Biden talk about his story on how he became a senator and how you then moved on to vice president and his now our president.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And just to be in that oval office, you can feel the history and the conversations and the decisions that have been made in that room. It was just so freaking cool. And to hear how much Joe Biden is like family oriented. He had an unbelievable mother and father that gave him the determination and the mindset to be able to stand for all people. That is what the president does for the United States. It was awesome to hear. I'm talking about some of the history and some of the things that he had lying around
Starting point is 00:15:41 the office for just to make it, make it home for him. And yeah, one of them, another one of them, one of those items, he casually, as he's walking to, I believe, the dining room that is right next to the, the Oval Office. Okay. He points at a, at a rock in a, in a glass case. It's like, oh yeah, that's a rock from the moon. And I was just like, well, it's about it. And with a NASA, NASA just handed him over one of the rocks they got from the moon. I was just like, I kind of want to have to keep telling me more about this thing. Like, like, like, like, like, like, like, a story. I know that this rock moves and then it was a fat door.
Starting point is 00:16:31 See, that's before. So that's the that's the lever that I need to do. No, but um, yeah, I um, I got to yeah, I got the crawling of the Resolute desk and see what was down there. Got to hear about our president's journey into being the 46th president of the United States. And um, I might have opened some doors. I wasn't supposed to be opening, but that was down in the mansion part of the White House, not the West Wing, where all the good stuff probably is. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Yeah, no. Didn't find anything crazy. Found a closet, there's probably like a janitor closet that I thought was going to be like the hallway to another hallway to a tunnel that was going to take me to a treasure. But now I got caught opening up way too many side doors and doors that I was supposed to do today. They told me to chill out so I'm I reeled it back. So we got to get to the biggest the the biggest i think that made social
Starting point is 00:17:26 news what were you gonna say i just wanted to win to the podium while president joe biley always wanted to distract it to you clearly gave him it was the old book in jail fell for it that really quick you i still was what's over there? Like, I mean, come on. What is I've just I've always, you know, I've always admired, uh, you know, obviously the president at the podium is it's iconic, right?
Starting point is 00:18:05 It's iconic. It's iconic. How they, he usually addresses the nation to my fellow Americans. And I would, that's all I wanted to say, dude, that's it. I just wanted to go up there and say, I should, I should to start it off with, I've always wanted to do this. And you want to start it off with my fellow Americans. That would have been such a show stop off with my fellow Americans. That would have
Starting point is 00:18:25 been such a show stopper. I don't think they would have kicked you off. If somebody gets up to the podium and says, my fellow Americans, it's like a media like, all right, what's this dude about to say? Oh, man. Yeah. But bad new bad new that I was. Yeah. I was in over. I was in over my way. When you pointed, he was like, there ain't nothing over there. There is. This, this, this is a flankin' move of I know, I know Travis. And he's a flanker. Yeah, he's a flanker before.
Starting point is 00:18:54 No, yeah, that was a shout out to Pat Man for keeping me from embarrassing myself at that podium, man, in front of the world. But that's, yeah, that was fun, man. It's not out. It's not out the president by the man handing him that jersey on the on that stage in the uh, in the old front lawn. That was a pretty pretty cool moment that I'll remember forever. Well dad asked me to ask you, did you ask him about the aliens? I did it, dude.
Starting point is 00:19:23 I did it. I did it. Travis. I was so just engulfed in that, you know, just the he it was his floor, man. You know, I mean, I didn't want to make a mockery of this entire thing. I was already acting like a child. Crawling on the ground under desks and walking through doors. I shouldn't have been walking through. I just, uh, I couldn't, I couldn't ask. I should have though. I should have. All right. Well, pretty dang cool, man, that you guys were able to, uh, to be at the house of America, the White House. I mean, pretty unreal. Um, it's awesome. And you, you got out to house though this weekend. Big guy. We're not talking about that. I can't say I went to the Philadelphia Union game and the Roots picked Nick to a mother that just went to the White House like I ain't gonna just tell who's your who's your favorite performer at the Roots Bikney.
Starting point is 00:20:16 So you didn't know any of them. I think the Roots are the best every year. I think the roots of the best every year. They show baby. They absolutely kill it. And everybody does well. I mean, none of it is bad. Usher was clearly my wife's favorite part. I wouldn't have, but did he have on his skates? I don't remember.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Roller skates. I don't remember that. No. Well, that's his performance. His Vegas show, he always comes out. He roller roller skates. I don't remember that. No, well that he did change armors his Vegas his Vegas show. He always comes out. He's got skates. Yeah, maybe you did. I did not a lot. I don't think I remember that but um, and then I'm a big buster fan. So buster rhymes out there. Oh, yeah, you know, give me some. Give me some. Give me some. give me some. I'm going to be, give me some, give me some, give me some. Fucking, you can't go wrong with Bustamain. Well, that's our get out of the house portion.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Ocean Drive, Beer Bowl update. One thing before we bring our guest time, what you guys are going to love, there's a right reminder that there is still time to participate in enter our first ever beer bowl taking place on June 28th in C.I.L. City, New Jersey to benefit the Eagles Autism Foundation for a chance to compete, submit a video with your team theme and the reason why we should pick you and your partner for a shot at a $50,000 cash prize. That's right. $50,000 cash prize goes to the best team. So if you and one partner think that you're game enough to compete in the first ever
Starting point is 00:21:53 New Heights Beard Bowl, make sure you submit a video about your team theme and why we should pick you. We've also gotten this question a lot, but just as a reminder, it's teams of two people, and the cutoff to enter is June 20th. That's a Tuesday. We're trying to keep it pretty much a week out from the competition so we can notify people that are in it for travel reasons and all all that stuff. Send submissions to new Heights Show or email us at newheightshowatgmail.com. show or email us at new heights show at gmail.com. We did get us a mission we should probably talk about from a friend of ours, former teammate of mine. Mr. Bo Allen, we did at new heights.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Let's take this shit over. Honey, Bo, let's take this shit over. Take it over big guy. Him and Chris Long. Do we let them in? Is this a cop? Can we let friends in I feel like I feel like a good if they got a good theme and they got a good I mean they got to make a video we can't just can't just accept them because
Starting point is 00:22:56 I mean that's listen we have no We have a tag read over here. Yeah, there's no doubt. I would love to witness this I would love to see it too. That would be an epic team for the ages. I don't think those two have been reunited since the Super Bowl. That's a super bowl tandem right there. As a team outside of their good work on the Green Light Podcast. That'd be pretty epic.
Starting point is 00:23:20 If you want to attend the New Heights Beer Bowl, be one of the top 30 Donators to Team 62, and that will get you a plus one seat on the floor. VIP ticket. It also will get you access all of the Eagles that are in attendance, potentially access to Travis Kelsey. I don't really know. I don't Travis has a sometime commitments, but yeah. So there's going to be some special things put in place to the top 30 donors to team 62 for Eagles Autism Foundation. Uh, there will be some tickets sold on the day of the event. It's going to happen in the morning around 10 a.m. So keep
Starting point is 00:24:02 that in mind. If you want to guarantee, because I have a feeling these tickets are going to go pretty quick, then you're in it. You got to be one of the top 30 donors. Also, you got to be 21 to enter or compete. Yeah. No fake ideas either. We're checking IDs, baby. We're checking IDs. But if you, even if you don't want to, yeah, even if you don't want to enter or don't don't want to throw enough Into to be a top uh, what is it top 30 donors? Any donations appreciated man with the what the eagles do for the autism community with this foundation is nothing short of amazing So please donate when you can and and how you can and and what you can there we go We will get back to the show in just a second, but right now we got to shout out one of our partners.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Which one? Fireball. Oh, fireball takes any event to the next level. As you know, Jason, especially, you know, hanging with the friends, telling you the game to the next level, reaching new heights, or maybe even winning a big game.
Starting point is 00:25:04 I don't know. How about that? Jason, you're a fire big game. I don't know about that Jason Alright, well, I'm a fireball guy. That's because fireballs iconic cinnamon flavor tastes fire and goes down Making it the ultimate crowd, please. The 1993 NBA's most valuable player.
Starting point is 00:27:21 I remember the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, the four-time Emmy award-winning co-host of the greatest show right now in sports media. That's right inside the NBA. We have the man himself, sir Charles Barkley. Thank you all. Thank you. Thank you, oh my god. Oh, I am so excited to be a God podcast. You know, Jay's travel zone being an earnest podcast a couple of weeks ago. The same room baby. Hey, let me tell you something. My daughter, who I didn't even know paid attention to my podcast, Paul Kree says,
Starting point is 00:28:01 Dad, you had Travis Kelsey on the podcast. I said, we had him on last week. She says, I said, please stop right now. Please stop. Just leave it. Just, you know what, it's so weird when you're not as crushy as on people and like, oh, this is my baby girl.
Starting point is 00:28:22 And I see what you're saying. Jason is going to have the same feelings. He's got three of the things. The first time he's ever mentioned my podcast to me. So now I'm a fool. She's listening to the podcast all the time, but she was so excited we had travel on Jason. That's what it gets you now. Oh, listen, this has been my story of my life.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Joe, they're saying nothing new for me. I got three daughters, so I'm not looking forward to having these talks later on, but. Hey, what up? Jason, let me tell you something. That is the worst freaking thing in the world. I did not enjoy that. I got yelled at all the time.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Come to say, they say I was a nice. This is what happened. And tell me if I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just a jackass. No, what you got? When they came to the house, I said, hey, I'm Christian, I'm this dad. Welcome to my house.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Eat in a thing. Let me know. OK. Then I leave. Uh-huh. Afterwards, my daughter comes screaming at me, you're such an ass, why can't you be nice? I'm like, what?
Starting point is 00:29:34 Was I not nice? No, that's fair game. I want to see. What do you mean? I was like, I said, I'm Christian, is that welcome to my home. If you think I'm gonna be hanging out with teenagers, you're like, that's the nicest I can be to a boy who's coming here
Starting point is 00:29:52 trying to kind of hook up with my daughter. So yeah, that's what I can do. You're gonna be all you want to. I thought that was pretty smooth. That's a pretty smooth way to go ahead. I've actually, I've gotten way worse than that going to a young lady's house. I've gotten some pretty stern and like, foot down. Yeah, no, so I'm expecting. I would say, as a young man going into your girlfriend's house or a young lady's house, you'd have to be ready for that.
Starting point is 00:30:19 There's nothing, I just feel like you have to be open to the father being able to kind of like Set the tone you have to be accepting of that you don't mean and be respectful of that Right way a wrong way to do it because like you know when you and sports you sit around with the guys It's like especially on trains, planes, embusses, and y'all give each other advice how to raise your kids and things like that, because we've had some good, we have some bad ones, but I know there's no right way
Starting point is 00:30:54 or wrong way to try to handle the situation. It's just so plain and simple. Yeah. But let's be honest though, I know you've said what you said, but what was your body language while you were saying it was it? The what did you actually like the kid? I Never really got a chance to know if I like the kid or not because I didn't want because first
Starting point is 00:31:16 I think they didn't high school as a waste of time Be honest with you. You're never gonna see them again. Hopefully So my thing was, I didn't want to get, personally, I didn't want her getting close to them. Right. You know, I didn't want, because I was like, Hey, you're gonna go to college and get a job and be an strong independent woman. You're not going to let this joke slow you down. You're not going to have some dude. Who's going to be a stand home? some dude. Who's gonna say that? You're gonna be a stand-home. I said, there's nothing wrong with being a stand-home mom. I said, but for me, I wanna make sure
Starting point is 00:31:50 if you marry a jackass, you can leave. That's it. Yeah. I said, I wanna make sure, she's lucky. She went to Villanova when it was an amazing school. I don't know how to say that. Right, Jay Wright, baby, sit at her. And I'm talking to him.
Starting point is 00:32:07 I love her. I shout out to Coach Wright. Going to Columbia grad school. So I told her, in a time of husband, ain't acting right? Just say, hey, we'll see you later. Kick rocks. That's right.
Starting point is 00:32:19 That's a message to all the girl dads out there, baby. Yeah, message to me. I'll write that one. All right, I one. All right. I got to say before we get going, when did we all meet? Because we've all known each other for a while now. I guess, Travis, I think you met Chuck first. When did you get us?
Starting point is 00:32:33 Well, we actually talked about it on the steam room. We met at a NBA finals game. And I remember it just kind of hanging on the floor. And Charles came over, man, when I tell you, blew my mind that he even knew who I was at this time. And, man, I was star, I was star struck. I went and told everybody in my family, you know, because Charles Barker was a fan favorite, not only in our household, but, you know, in the community, we were a big basketball community. So everybody was always, always praising Sir Charles.
Starting point is 00:32:59 So it was, it was pretty cool to have him come up to me and say hello. Yeah, you know, so I don't normally come out during the game. So I always kind of stay in my little bunker. Cause like I say, I don't want to take away from these players today. Cause this is their time. So I don't know to go out and I just go out when we do the show and that said, and somebody said Travis Kirsten's here. I said, I'd say the tight end.
Starting point is 00:33:20 And I said, yo, I got to meet him. Cause you know, Jason football is my favorite sport. And I played one day, then I realized y'all were freaking nuts. You know, you know, his kids that give me a hard time. I think it was back, I think it was back coaching. The coach told me that he says, I shouldn't have put you on a defensive line, because like the only real position,
Starting point is 00:33:53 no disrespect to your trail, the only real positions in football on the offensive line and defensive line. That's where the game's won and lost. There's no cheating on the office of blind and defense of blind. You have to ask for your earn, your key. That's a bar fight, every single play. Oh, so I was on the defense of blind.
Starting point is 00:34:15 And I remember the last day the coach said to me, I'll see you tomorrow. I said, what? No, no, no. I said, no, no, no. I'm not doing this tomorrow. Not going to be. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no on, he said, Hey, if I had a chance to do it again, I put you at a position where you don't have to get hit every plate. I'm ready for that. I'm based on the ball first. Get him into this thing. Yeah. What? What? So we've had this debate before. I mean, we're going to get to a later too, but I gotta says we already talked about
Starting point is 00:34:58 it. Do you think you could have played in the NFL? No, just if you know, no, I don't think so because my two favorite sports are football and boxing. You can't cheat in football or boxing. You have to be all in. I admire the reason those two sports are like, wow, you have to really be all in to play football or box. Hey, basketball, you can cheat a little bit you can hide on our fence you can hide on defense But if you step on a football field or you step in a boxing ring Bad things can happen to you. That's why they're my favorite sports. I mean Football and I love boxing. I'm not gonna mix miss a good boxing match You know growing up in Alabama you have to like football. And yeah,
Starting point is 00:35:49 place that I had a great high school team. We were in the playoffs every single year. And it was a big deal. Cause at my hometowns, only got a couple thousand people. So you're going to play sports and love it. But man, football in boxing, I admired a guy so much. But I did I could after one day. I'm like, ain't no way in the hell if I do this. Would I get a answer? Who's your favorite boxer? That's a great question. Probably I, I, I, Lee is my hero. My, I, Lee's my hero. But probably from just a boxing standpoint, Marvel, Marvelous Marvus, Harvison, I forget Marvulus, was great.
Starting point is 00:36:28 I saw him, I was asked to fight that night, him and Tommy Hurons got to fight when the food came in the ring. Oh my gosh, I was, what was that like? I was about to say. He, Mr. Hagler, I only met him four or five times. He was always amazing. I, you know, I've uh, Mr. Hagler, I only met him, uh, four or five times. He was always amazing. Uh, you know, I've been, I played golf with sugar rate quite a few times.
Starting point is 00:36:50 Mike Tyson was asking one of my neighbors up the street for about four or five years. And so he would always come around, uh, but, you know, was this the house he had the Tigers at and stuff? Uh, you ever worry about one of the things you getting out? No, no, I never went out. I never go on the mic. No. No. Hey, so Mike, Mike is a, Mike, I actually like Mike a lot,
Starting point is 00:37:17 but I, but I tell, this is a fun story. So I have a New Year's Eve party every year. So one year Mike called, Mike came a couple years. I kind of just I ran out at restaurant and bite about 30, 40, 50 people bringing DJs. Everybody is so no pictures, no autographs. Just everybody come have fun. You know, no no light waste out there again, drunk and just my friends having fun The Mike Tyson come here and like the guy comes with the bullhaw. This sounds electric The campus here the campus here And I'm like hey, we're all famous in here. There's no big deal in here. There's no big deal. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:03 Come down, buddy. Everybody. Everybody in the room is having a good time. We're all famous to no big deal to chapters here. So about two hours in the party, three or four of the husbands come up to me and says, you got to do some about Mike. What's Mike doing? He says, he's grabbing our wife by the ass.
Starting point is 00:38:27 Oh, he was going around grabbing women. Oh my God. My God. The champ is here. The champ is here. There are these dudes. So let me get this straight. The guy who bit a guy era of y'all want me to go
Starting point is 00:38:41 and confront him. That's it. Nope. That confront him. I said, nope. And I said, you get off the handle. This one, Rob. Grab it. And I wise asked that you got to say something. So I said, okay, okay. That was like, he might just, there's only a couple women here who
Starting point is 00:39:05 are single, not that you should be grabbing there as either. But most of the women here, ball the date, and he's like, okay, Charles, okay, Charles, you right. I'll stop doing that, Charles. I just, I'll appreciate it. We got to reel it back a little bit, Mike. Yeah, I really bad. So then about 30 minutes later, I smell pot. We got to reel it back a little bit Mike. Yeah, really bad.
Starting point is 00:39:25 So then about 30 minutes later, I smell pot. No way. Hey, you know, man, who the hell is smoking pot in here? They're like, what's my restaurant to corner? Dude, Mike is a little scared. Oh my gosh. So I go over there. Mike, I know I rented out the restaurant for the party, but this is actually somebody's restaurant.
Starting point is 00:39:50 I'm and these people lose their food and beverage license. Can you? You can't go. You can't be right, Charlie. I wouldn't want to lose that license either. It's about 30 minutes later. They're camping, man. You know, Mike's out on the front.
Starting point is 00:40:04 You know, I rest some rest running home. I'm going to be there. I'm going to be there. I'm going to be there. right charge I want to lose that life's either. It's about about 30 minutes later. There can't be more. You know, Mike's out on the front. You know, I rest some restaurant have like a little bench. Mike, I'm in the restaurant just blazing away. I say, hey man, leave the dude alone. At this point. Yeah. World War War Equaster. Yeah. We're one more kind of like a police policing away from this guy really started to get hot. That's too funny. He was he was always cordial though, but he was interesting.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Oh, yeah. As we can imagine, man, as we can imagine, man. Awesome. All right. We got to talk to this real quick. We got some new news. We hit him with the one, two, three, new news.
Starting point is 00:40:50 New news. Check if you're gonna give us a new news. A new news. No, no. They're on it. He's a match room. He's the best media guy. Oh.
Starting point is 00:41:00 That's good. That is perfect. Can't beat that. The new news is we are officially three weeks out from the match. Travis and Pat are going off against Steph Curry and Clay Thompson. Chuck, you're going to be there. Who do you got? Who do you think is going to take this one? I also think the football players are going to win. There's no. No, no, no, no, no, no, baby. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Starting point is 00:41:28 no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, okay. No, I know stuff is a good player. I don't know anything about clay, but I have actually played with your brother and Pat. They go play good enough. Trust me.
Starting point is 00:41:54 Who? Who's better between Travis and Pat? You got to answer honest now. That's a really good question. And I can tell you that one. Do they pair well? They're just a good, like, well, what, what, what, what, what, what's the format of the match? That's the question. I think it's a little bit more of a team game. So it's going to be a
Starting point is 00:42:13 I think this is a scramble set up like bet. It's either a scramble or a shamble. And I believe a scramble is we both get to take the best drive. And then we, then we play our ball from that point and the shambles. That's what I'm taking. I can't remember who pulls about a player. I'm not trying to skirt your question, Jason, but I can't. I can tell you it's past. I can tell you it's past. We said, the way that way Lake Tahoe works is you play with a friend the first day
Starting point is 00:42:46 And then yeah, you play with people who got the same scores you You're being very modest and I appreciate that Chuck. I ended the first like two times I played in Tahoe, me and me and Charles ended the Sunday together. You got a lot better quicker though. No, yeah, no, I figured it out. I said, if I'm going to be on national TV, I'm going to have people around. I got to try not to hurt anybody and actually shoot a good score so I can keep getting invited back.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Yeah, somebody is no big deal. I'm not going to lie. I was, uh, I just hit a guy like a like a month ago. I went down to a chaleno bay with my guy, Chandler Parsons, uh, played in a member guest down there with him. And we made it all the way to the championship. We made it through our fleet and the like the, uh, everybody that won their fleet had this one shot. You had to do alternating shots. And, uh, we had a, uh had a wedge from about 80 yards out, everybody had to try and get it in the hole as fast as possible.
Starting point is 00:43:51 And I'll tell you what, I was about 80 out and I hit a guy in the grandstand behind the hole and it comes flying back across the green. How about it? How about it? How about it? Dude, when I tell you, somebody told me that I hit somebody and I was like, that thing rico him and it came back. Dude, when I tell you somebody told me that I hit somebody,
Starting point is 00:44:05 I was like, that thing ricocheted really hard back. I was like, I'll let him in the head for the ricochet like that. Dude, they hit him right in the, it hit him right in the thigh. They said, there's nothing worse. You know, I plan a probably three or four rounds a year, especially on the senior tier of sewer. And man, those little tunnels, well, they think all the pros are hitting, they're being trying to get a good look. And I'll take
Starting point is 00:44:33 a picture. Somebody you can barely take that club back, man. You can barely. How do you hear somebody? I don't want to talk about it. Like in slow motion. Like I just want to buy. Yeah. Please don't want to press that. Like in slow motion. Like I just want to bump. Yeah. Please don't do it again. Please. What a good Josh Allen. Josh Allen last year. I think hit a few people at the match. Hey, when it was him it when it was him and Pat. I tell you what, they were the he's a good he can hit the ball a long way. Yeah, he can. As long as you have fun because you're gonna raise a boatload of
Starting point is 00:45:05 Manifitureity you're gonna have fun. Yep. So you can't take it that series. I mean I was gonna you want to win but they're probably gonna waste a ton of Manifitureity. I mean we keep doing these matches because it's what it's about man every year we Get shocked how much money we raise for charity. It's awesome man. Well if they're looking for fun They got the right duos. We got to get Jason to lose some weight so he can swing a club. Oh, no, big time around. Big time around.
Starting point is 00:45:30 Talk about his weight, man. He likes fat shame. What the truck? Jason's in shape, fat boy. You know what I mean? Like, he's one of those guys. It's just, he's more muscle than fat, but he's got to keep the fat on. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:45:42 So you can take the beating. You know what I mean? What's more nerve wrecking a big putt or a Saturday night life? A big putt on the mattress, that's an L. There's nothing like Saturday night life. Like, I'm like, damn, I know how to read. And when you start, I'm telling you. I'm telling you, man.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Like in the beginning of the week, there's nobody in there when you first start out. And you're like, damn, I know I can read, but I'm nervous. And I, the thing that, you know, we talked about on the podcast, like sometimes you have like two minutes to get dressed, Jason. And these four random ass trains, women women you've never met in your life. That's how it goes. I'm just standing up, but I have to make it.
Starting point is 00:46:33 And they're a bit cool. And they're a bit cool. And they're out fit. And somebody screaming, a minute, 45, a minute 30. I'm down. Yeah. And like one second, just stand there and just your underwear. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Because sometimes, most of the time they velcro you clothing, like I said, there's three or four times you have exactly two minutes to get dressed. So they get you, one, they get, easily it takes a leg on the arm, and they just snatch or shit off at one square foot. And then they snatch it back together. You're like 30, 29, and they push you out there. I mean, it is so intense.
Starting point is 00:47:20 And it's one of the most fun weeks of your, uh, you want the hardest weeks and fun weeks. But man when it's over you're like wow, I Can't imagine I can't imagine doing that like every week after somebody Right crazy Well Jason can it test Jason can it test to that first monologue read he was in the room when he saw my first monologue read and Your right But man, it was, it was fucking bad. I got coached up real quick. I got coached up real quick. But you killed it just like relax.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Like typical, I mean, Travis is so good. Once the camera comes on, it's just like boom, and you got it. You know what I mean? And he, he struggled the first one, but the game time one, the best one he did, the whole freaking. Well, I think I'm did, the whole freaking bad. I think the bad thing about that is that warm up show. Yeah, the rehearsal.
Starting point is 00:48:10 The rehearsal, yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm right there with you, Charles. When I tell you that, that got a lot of the butterflies out, got, it made me a whole lot more confident in the characters and what I was gonna say, but that was arguably, I thought it was almost more fun because it was kind of like a little bit looser because you knew it wasn't, you know, showing to the entire world.
Starting point is 00:48:29 But, and you got to do every single skit. I'll say this, I'll try to, I don't want to, only you and Trab know this because you guys have hosted. But Trab, when the first time he did the monologue, he comes out and he's like getting teary-eyed. And he gets choked up. I'm not making this up. Like, he gets choked up. And I'm like, what the hell got you all choked
Starting point is 00:48:48 up? There ain't nobody in here like what is the biggest deal with this right now? And he says, man, I was staring back there and that's when it dawned on him that he's going to be on the stage with all of these greats because I guess everybody signs the back side of that door that you walk through. So there's a bunch of like Chris Far, like all these all-time Saturday Live greats. And that's like when it hit him. He's like, man, I'm really about to be on Saturday Night Live, which was one of the coolest moments of the week for us.
Starting point is 00:49:15 I built that thing up in my head right before I walked out. Wasn't a good mix. Wasn't a good mix. I'll tell you, I'll tell you a funny, when I hosted it the first time, when I music a guest was Kurt Cobain in that group Nirvana. Yeah, Nirvana. Yeah, yeah, the dressing rooms are only like six feet apart
Starting point is 00:49:34 Oh, yeah, so Every time they open the first volume were really nice. I courted in love with just she was nice I forget the other two members of the group I courted in law was just she was nice. I forget the other two members of the group. But every time I open that door, I got one of those mushroom clouds apart. I got a cup. He's like, where's my Tyson?
Starting point is 00:49:54 Hey, I got a cup every day that week. Like every time they open the door, like you see like those nucleic flows like those big mushroom clouds? Every time you open the door, like you see like those nucleic flows like those big mushroom clouds. But they were very nice, but they were they were they were cool. They were their blazing that thing up. Yeah, they're probably really cool. They had yeah. All right, well, Joe, we're going on to the next segment of this
Starting point is 00:50:24 this show called No Dumb Questions because we all know there's no dumb questions. Just dumb people and, uh, to our, uh, friends at accelerator, this is, uh, brought to you by our friends at accelerator. We got my rock-a-pops sitting right here. And one of my favorite energy drinks get fueled by nature, ladies and gentlemen. No sugars. Healthy way to energize yourself. Alright, so from our guys, Seth and Gilellis, who would be more successful
Starting point is 00:50:53 at the Travis Barkley or Charles Kelsey, this is the language. We've told the story about me wanting to be named Charles when I moved to the new city, Cleveland Heights when I was five years old, as my mother found out at the Black Party. I was telling everybody down the street that my name was Charles and you just told the story about how yeah Travis Abernathy was one of your idols in the in the city you grew up in and man I got to ask you a few things I watched that episode I watched that episode of the steam room with you guys what there's no way you actually wanted to be called Travis. You had to have made that up for the show, right?
Starting point is 00:51:30 No, not at all. So, what was really funny, the best player at my high school was a guy named Travis Abinati. And he was great from like junior high. So, everybody loved Travis. Yeah. But I was named after my grandfather. Everybody loves Travis.
Starting point is 00:51:48 So when I started getting better at basketball, as mom, what do you think about me changing my name to Travis? He says, what the hell are you talking about? I was, I was like, don't get it done. He says, let's get grandfather's name. And I say, yeah, and he's a nobody. That's the one. That's a perfect example. But, but, but, but, but,
Starting point is 00:52:11 a, that's 100% true. And we, I'm not just saying that we had him on the podcast. This is so crazy. I'm, I told a story on this show. Yeah. 25 times. I said, I wanted my name, because I love the name Travis. It's just like you got to be able to place some of your name Travis Yeah, that's a bad ass name for the most part. Yeah, that's fair. All right. I'll take it. I'll take it
Starting point is 00:52:36 I ever thought about Jason. Yeah, I'd say wish Don't have the same ring to it I Don't have the same ring to it Who had a thing? Oh my god Jason Barclay. I was about to say who has a better career Travis Barclay or Charles Kelsey? I think they both been pretty successful I think you got a huge work and it's on me because you asked to play both sports
Starting point is 00:53:05 So either one of them will work, like I told you, man, that one day I play football. I know football was not for me. I mean, I told you, well, D line was for you. I was. I was around with my football friends. What's the problem with the ball friends like? defensive line offensive line running back
Starting point is 00:53:31 You know those what you can really Really have to be all your will Running back when you get that ball you got them boys coming for your head like at the time in You probably can rest. Listen, I'm a flanker. I'm a flanker. I'ma find my way. You can do it some other flake. I'ma, oh yeah, you're the best side.
Starting point is 00:53:57 You're the best side. You don't have to give up. You're the best side. You don't have to give up. No off, no off. Well, there is, sometimes there's two, three techniques. And I just get to sit in the hole and act like I'm doing something. I'll go help the guard, baby.
Starting point is 00:54:10 But that's about the only thing I get. Yeah. That usually now they figure out, like, yeah, let's spike one of these guys down and hit this guy. So now the name is, I mean that one. So my friends tell me, you're the smartest, the smartest guy on a, because you have to do all the protection and oh yeah. I got to see, can't be without me.
Starting point is 00:54:32 We've talked about this, I really think Travis and I ended up, the way we think, we ended up going into the positions that suited us. In my dad's house, the story, we got the same Lego set as kids. And I followed the instructions like one by one and put this thing together, piece by piece. Travis just looked at the box and put the thing together. You know what I mean? Like, Travis had a few extra pieces at the end that I probably shouldn't have had. You know, I missed a few steps, but I think it looked like I was.
Starting point is 00:55:02 For years, no, and then looking at it there, my dad for years, my dad, no, you didn't look any there for my dad for years like Travis a smarter than Jason because he put that Lego to set it together without the instructions. But what I'm saying is I'm very analytical thinking and I think the way it helps being a center, my brother is very creative. And he thinks kind of similar to like an artist where he's just got great spatial awareness. He is no dummy by any means and don't he's just disguises a dumbass sometimes. He ain't no dumbass. I'll tell you that. He is one of the smartest people I've been around and I do live just to be sent a center. You have to be able to understand the ins and outs of the play and make calls and do all these things that are structured, but I don't
Starting point is 00:55:45 have the ability to freelance the way Trav does. And the way a lot of guys that are premier either basketball or receivers or quarterback, quite frankly, you watch Pat Mahomes, probably the best freelance and athlete I've ever seen. You got a little bit of both. I ask your brother this on the podcast. You know, yeah, my football friends, if I want to know football questions, I ask them football questions. I hate people act like they know about every sport. It drives me crazy. Like there's no way you can know. I mean, just go to pay you food. I don't mean you know every sport. I mean, that's just a BS. We have to deal
Starting point is 00:56:19 with. But I'm sitting there sometimes. And I says,, yo man, why does dude always open? Yo, I'm sitting there like in NBA, we're like, hey, we're not going to let this do beat us. We're going to take care of my dick and I was telling and I was telling to her about this. Yo man, I'm sitting there watching, going back, I said, man, why is Jerry where he's always open? You can't double him, but do this. He's just, this is not that easy. And then I said, I'm sorry, man.
Starting point is 00:56:55 Why is he always open? Y'all can't stop that. I mean, Andy Reed, baby. Andy Reed. There's a team to try to, but it just opens up so much other stuff if they ever get because football everybody's got to have a gap in order to be sound defensively and of course, zone man. So if you want to apply that much attention to one player, you've got to have a bad rest of the team to be able to apply that much attention
Starting point is 00:57:26 or in like the red zone where you're not playing with any safety's deep and you can put two guys on a guy. But I don't know. It's tough for me to say because I don't know nothing about basketball other than how to play knockout in trying outhustle the guy in front of him. That's about my experience playing basketball. So, Jason, your first in a knockout is you throwing your ball at the other ball while it's in the air. You're me defending the red. Listen, you gotta think you gotta come up with some ideas
Starting point is 00:57:55 if you can't shoot the ball. You gotta find a way to win. You know how, you know, to have two brothers be in a professional sport is crazy. Like it's an amazing thing. Like I mean, I mean, I mean, that's a fairly number one. You're both obviously great Easily saying you both agree But to have two brothers and it's I mean to be and In the be successful not like a guy who you know, it's like we always say oh he is brother had a couple coffee I'm like the B is greatest y'all have been for a long. I mean, it's pretty amazing man. I mean, it's yeah, I mean been for a long, I mean, it's pretty amazing, man. I mean, I mean, I would say that that kind of hit me and I think Travis both in the Super Bowl. I mean, we've known for a long
Starting point is 00:58:51 time how crazy it is that we've been so that we've been blessed to be able to play so long in the NFL. But you're right, because the talent is only one piece of it, like the injuries, all the other like little things that have been to be on the field. What do you get with the right coaches in college? You know, it's it is crazy when you think about the longevity of it, especially matched with the success. Because it's just hard in the NFL in particular, it's hard to sustain a career that long just as one player let alone
Starting point is 00:59:26 two guys that are related and went to the grew up together. So yeah, I it is it's not when we think about it and um certainly thankful to everybody that has helped us get to this point. Yeah, I want to say football football is that game. Yeah. Yeah. So Yeah. It's hard to single out one guy's success in football over another's. You know, you can kind of look at the the accolades of like, you know, pro goals and and all pros and stuff like that. But at the end of the day, this is the ultimate team game. And like you said, you got to be all in because of the guys
Starting point is 01:00:01 around you. When you play that offensive defensive line, it really just anytime you're out there on the field because it's You got you got bodies flying and then and everybody trying to be accountable for the guy next to a man So we've been fortunate. We've been on some good teams that has some great people to help us throughout these years man, you guys got to be great leaders in your own right? I mean you can't have the same success that you have I mean because it you know Jason the same success that you have.
Starting point is 01:00:25 I mean, because you know, Jason said, it takes a lot more than talent to be successful. It takes a lot more than talent. Talent gets you to the dance. Talent gets you to the dance. Then your ass got to learn how to dance. I, we always talk about it. Yeah, I like it.
Starting point is 01:00:45 And we had this reunion about the older guys from the 80s and 90s. We're talking about, we always say, when that guy gets it, we're not going to have a chance. They never get it. They can break it over. They do stupid things. They don't have to work ethic. They got some issues off the off the court You know have a talent. It's a that to be it's just the first piece of the puzzle
Starting point is 01:01:12 I mean when you start getting up there when you play double digit years You have mastered the physical and the mental Yeah, you I can say yeah, there's a lot of guys who play one two three years Yeah, I can say, yeah, there's a lot of guys who play one, two, three years. But if you get to double digit years, you have mastered the physical and mental. And that's the hardest thing. That's the hardest thing out as a player. Right. Did you do that?
Starting point is 01:01:35 You know what? I mean, I remember being a young freaking idiot out there on the football field, getting yelled at left and right because I'm doing the wrong things because, you know, you just don't know that you don't know you're doing the things the wrong way. You're doing this learning process of playing in a new system, playing in a new league, going up against grown men. You got a lot of other things you know to worry about now that you're out of college and things like that. And the guys that translate the game faster mentally have so much more success earlier on
Starting point is 01:02:08 in their careers. Instead of just showing up and being the athlete that you are, because everybody's going to be a great athlete when you first get to lead, because you're younger and everything. But the more, even now, right now, as you get older, you get less athletic, but you get faster because you're seeing things quicker. You're reacting to things quicker because you have these built-in instincts. And that's how you sustain a career in anything, really, is you just, you master the mental part of it so that everything just flows that much quicker and you stay on time and actually
Starting point is 01:02:41 play faster because you're ahead of the game. Always tell guys, like for me, I was in college for three years, and it all comes together like around 25. I said, from 25 to 32, you're like, hey, I can I run everybody, I can I jump everybody. And then, you know, you get all your physical powers know you got all your physical powers you got all your mental powers and Then you have sustained like They can't do anything against me
Starting point is 01:03:13 If I work hard, I'm going to be successful and then you get to the other side like Who is the hardest game? who is the hardest game? I remember so to give the audience some, I guess, Charles, I reached out to him about last year, I think, off season, about retirement and like, how do I know when it's time to retire? And Charles was just very, very chuck simple way. He was like, hey, when people that shouldn't be beating you start beating you. He was like, that is the real thing.
Starting point is 01:03:50 When he goes, time's up. When I look across, this dude can't even play and he's kicking my ass. He's right now. This dude, like, and when you, when you at the top of the game, there's very few people like, oh, hey, I better get a good meal on a good night's sleep.
Starting point is 01:04:14 And they, they, they're some guys, you say, oh, man, we can go to the club and party all night. That's definitely what you got to do. And that's what he can do. Thank God, we can stay up all night. We can go wet. It would just be, yeah, yeah, Makale, a bird, a calm alone. Yeah, you're like, yeah, I need to get a good night's sleep. And then, like I said, when you store a blanket, guys, like, just do can't play. I can say when you store a plane against guys, like, just do camp play.
Starting point is 01:04:45 And I, and like, come on, that's what it's time to go home. Yeah, but I can't wait. That's aggressive probably. It's been a long, long, long time, man. It ain't nothing like it. There's nothing like, like, I was so, being an Eagles fan. It's been so cool going back to the Nick Foles and then now with Taylor. I've been in Philadelphia since 1985 no matter how much success the
Starting point is 01:05:16 Eagles, I mean the flyers, the Sixers have, the Phillies. It's a it's a it's an Eagles town man. I tell people I didn't realize that till I got there in 85 because we don't have a pro sports in Alabama. So when I got there, I'm hanging out with Jerome Brown, Seth Jonah, who's still a great friend for me today. Red you white, little cunning ham. they read you white, they'll cut in half. And these guys, I'm like, wow. And I, so I became an Eagles fan. Was a buddy Ryan era? Like, was he the head coach when you first got there? My favorite coach at all time, football is buddy Ryan.
Starting point is 01:05:56 Yeah, yeah. I love that guy. That's amazing. And I love him because the players loved him. Right. You know, because I, say I always tell people the players you know, the players ain't gonna lie to you. Right. And I never met a player who didn't love Buddy Ryan. They, like, I, I, I get that's your man. I, I, I only met him a couple
Starting point is 01:06:19 times. I'm like, coach, the players love you. When players tell me they love you, that's good enough for me. Yeah, that's like the sign of approval. Well, Philly, Philly, they keep you honest over there. The Philadelphia fans, they keep you honest. So you already know you got to live with integrity out there in Philly. So it's probably true. You got to get the right guys in the building.
Starting point is 01:06:40 Yeah, but let me tell you something. Philadelphia is a great, great city. I love playing there,. It's not for everybody Everybody can't play in Philly. I mean we had this guy Who would get two quick files to start the game every game trap Like you're man. What is your damn problem? Why you get two files right away? He's just Man, I can't take the crowd screaming at me. No It ain't for you boss. We like what? He says they leave me alone when I go to the bench
Starting point is 01:07:18 And I was like and I felt bad. I was mad and I felt bad Right because I I felt bad. I was mad and I felt bad. Right. I had a little sympathy for him. Yeah. Because I remember talking to Sean Bradley one time. Mm-hmm. I said, yo man, please tell your wife this shit to hell up.
Starting point is 01:07:37 Okay. Hey, I'm not even playing. I'm not even playing. I'm not even playing for the sixes. I'm a I said, yo man, please tell your wife to shut the hell up Yelling the fans who are yelling at you Well my wife loves me. She's gonna defend me. I should let me tell you something Yeah, yeah, after about two you had to stop coming to games. Well, I was about to say we, we learned, you know, who learned that go, don't do not get
Starting point is 01:08:12 into it with the fans. Just take it and keep it moving. All right. Joey Boe, so Joey Boe, so he, he, he barked back, man, it got him on the hook. Okay. That's what Philly, Philly just throws that line out there and they say one or two things are kind of funny but it kind of just like pierce you enough to want to say something back. And if you don't have fun with it, you go the opposite way and defend it. Oh man, they just, it's like hounds. They all like wolves just surround you and just eat it up.
Starting point is 01:08:37 And the one thing I would say as long as you play hard, they're cool. Yeah, I think you still got to perform. If you're not performing, they're going to be mad. Yeah, but they'll respect you if you play hard. Yeah. That's the big like even if you're not good to a certain extent, if you're a hustle player, Philadelphia will love you. And if you wear your heart on your sleeve, if they feel like you really care, that's the biggest thing to them.
Starting point is 01:09:05 Carrying and hard. I never had an issue in Philadelphia. Because they know I was like, hey, I'm gonna get y'all everything I got every single night. Our teams were not great because we screwed up trading the number one pick in the draft for some unknown stupid ass reason. No, I didn not. So, but the
Starting point is 01:09:29 fill is in really loved you. Did you have that broad street bully game? That's why that's why Philly loved you. Yeah, you had that broad street bully game. Yeah, you brought the tenacity. So, so, so, so, I'm becoming a star like my third year in the league. And Doc is older, Moses over Bobby jump and rehears. They are all good ready to retire. And Doc is older, Moses over, Bobby jump, but we're cheeks, they are all getting ready to retire. We got number one pick in the draft, and I'm like, finally, finally. I said, when I get Brad Dirty,
Starting point is 01:09:57 we're gonna store a kick in some ass, and that's easy. Ooh, that you would've been? Oh, you're a Brad Dirty. Oh my gosh. We go out, celebrate, me and some of the guys Because we like tomorrow. We're gonna get Brad Dirty so I get dropped off I think about three o'clock at the morning my phone rings around 5.30
Starting point is 01:10:18 It's a great writer named Phil Jasmine. I said, huh? What the hell? He's like I need to talk to you as important I says what what the hell? He's like, I need to talk to you as important. I said, what's going on? He said, I won't talk to you about the trade. I was a who been trading. He said, six is straight and I'm one pick in the draft. I just, I feel the sick is on that damn stupid. The trick I'm picking the draft. He said, yep, I said, feel, let me take a shower. I'll call you back in 30 minutes. I take like a two minutes shower shower because I like I want to hear the damn started we that damn stupid. Yeah, we traded to number one picking the drive to Cleveland. For a guy named Roy Hansen, it was a good solid player, good guy, good solid player. I did solid player and from that point on my career in Philadelphia just went down to Tollet.
Starting point is 01:11:08 It was brutal. I mean, I was so pissed. I ended up planting another four or five years, but we were not any good. But I was just, man, it changed the whole dynamic of my career. Yeah. No, and then Brad Dirty ended up helping the calves late in the 80s early 90s. He was a perennial your all star. Yeah, I had to go to war with my new bow Brad Dirty and my new man was a great gas big man
Starting point is 01:11:41 Now, it's a big man and a great dude one of my favorite teammates, but I'm like, Brad Dirty, my loot boat, that does a part for me. No. Come on. There's a difference. That's a big difference. One day to all start team probably six or seven times, and one would just find to be with.
Starting point is 01:11:57 There you go, yeah. It's fun to say his name. We need to take a brief time out to let you know this episode is brought to you by pup, Peroni. That's right. The original beef flavor dog treats made for your most valuable pup. And while your dogs can't experience the thrill of visiting the White House, hey, kind of, you can inject that same excitement into their life by feeding them an irresistible pup peroni treat. My mouth is salivating. Just thinking that's nasty. So bring more to the table than belly rubs and be your best friends, best friend. Now right now season long with the real meat taste of
Starting point is 01:12:37 paparoni original beef flavor snacks. To learn more go to pupperoni.com. That's pu pu pu. O N I dot com. Pup. Paroni. Doc has put up. It's like pepperoni, but pupperoni. Be your best friends best friend. I see you could probably get a dog into the White House.
Starting point is 01:12:57 If you just make like you do the same. If it can go on a plane, it probably go in the way. Dude, I should get Rambo in the White House. Just got to get him expired ID. We also need to shout out one of our sponsors that you probably see is drinking every show and that's Accelerator active energy. The rocket pop is so goddamn good. It'll make you just look at the can and say no fucking way this has zero sugar. So if you've been looking for something with zero sugar,
Starting point is 01:13:29 check, that gives you sustained energy, check. Also gets the metabolism going, check, and gives you the enhanced focus that you need to court a podcast or just be a successful human being and attack your fucking day. Well, accelerator active energy during is what you need. It feels like nature, Jason, what flavor you got over there? What's your favorite flavor? This one's starberry. I like it. I like it. I'm all berry lemonade. Can't go wrong, baby.
Starting point is 01:13:59 Accelerator active energy available nationwide at Target, Meyer and Sheets. Now that we're back on the NBA, I gotta ask this. I mean, we got the NBA finals going on. You have gone on record is saying you think it's going to be Denver. Do you still feel strongly it's going to be Denver? What makes you think it's going to be Denver if the case? I still feel really good about the nuggets. Honestly, game two was... I'm not even sure what the hell happened game two what he came up with.
Starting point is 01:14:30 Yeah. You're at home baby, you guys are defending. I was shocked that they came out flat. But you know what? Our situation is not like your job, you guys job. Like, one and done is a little bit different than wait we can lose We got to lose four times. So it's a little bit different So I'm gonna give him a pass
Starting point is 01:14:55 on game two, but they got to win one of these next two They have to they got a more talented team But the Miami-H he the there was great about Sports they got a great coach. They gonna play hard. They gonna play smart and That is a more dangerous player sometimes and a guy who's got a tremendous amount of talent who's not gonna work hard all the time Yeah, there's an edge to Miami right now. Yeah. So there's a focus. Quote unquote, heat culture. They're going to play a certain way. I always say, I use this analogy. They're going to dry 65 and I'm going to dry 75 and I'm going to dry 45. But if you
Starting point is 01:15:41 don't play the whole time at that level big on a good and pass you yeah Consistent what should we stop counting out Jimmy Butler? well No, you got to love Jimmy Butler got a guy kid He's unbelievable, but I will tell you man their role players gave Vincent Kayla Martin. Oh, yeah, they've been fabulous. Caleb's having an unbelievable fan. I thought about it.
Starting point is 01:16:08 It's probably been the best player for the heat the first two games. Man, you want to talk about a solid big. Yeah, but I'm not going against the Joker man. This year represents everything good about sports, everything good about the NBA. I think having him as one of the face of our league, it's going to be great if they can win this thing. I like to say I never care who wins, but to have Jimmy or Joker as the face of our league is one of them obviously going to win.
Starting point is 01:16:42 I think it'd be great. It's going to be great for the NBA. Yeah, I love to hear that. I think it'd be great. It's gonna be great for the NBA. Yeah. I love to hear that. Yeah, I gotta ask you. Yeah, I gotta ask. On behalf of what we're still on Jimmy. On behalf of Sixers fans, I gotta ask this question.
Starting point is 01:16:54 If this Sixers team has Jimmy Butler on it, are they still playing right now? They would have wanted. See, this is, you know, Jason, this is, I'm so glad you guys wanna have a question because I'm so disappointed in the Ben Simmons situation because the six of us had to choose between Ben Simmons and Jimmy Butler and obviously he chose wrong.
Starting point is 01:17:17 But what bothers me about the Ben Simmons situation is, as an organization, as a coaching staff, they just asked him to get better at basketball and his response was here's the middle finger I'm not playing here anymore and I'm like wait a minute dude they're paying you 40 million dollars a year they have the right to say hey Jason work on this hey Travis go nizz as a player. Your first response should never be, I'm never playing here again. Right. And it makes the Jimmy Butler situation look even worse. It does. From Ben Simmons and standpoint standpoint, I'm like, Yo man, they asked you to get
Starting point is 01:18:02 better at basketball. And your response is screw you guys. I'm not playing here anymore. So the whole Ben Semitin has really, I'm so disappointed as a player. Right, because if your coach asks you to get better as a player, I mean, that's his job. Except the challenge, baby. Who does a level good challenge to get better at life or get better at
Starting point is 01:18:27 your profession? Man, I'd drool for coach Reed to get on my ass about doing something to get in better. If you look at it, he's probably ruined his career. Cause now he's got this psychological block now when he's scared to shoot the ball. And I don't he's got another year at $40 million. So he got at least one more year to try to get it right. But he plays like he did this year where he's afraid to shoot the ball.
Starting point is 01:18:53 He scared to shoot free throws. This might be his last year in NBA. It's crazy to think. Man, go back to the Joker. I know we had to talk a little Philly ball right there, but going back to the Joker, you don't see a lot of big men dominating the game or a lot of big man getting the ball kind of ran through them in the offense. Kind of the vocal point on the offensive side is the big man officially making its way back into the league. Because I feel like
Starting point is 01:19:21 it kind of, I don't know, mellowed out there a little bit. Because a lot of teams saw what the Warriors were doing, what the Spurs had been doing for years, where they would go kind of like the four smaller guys and smaller players and work the ball around in a lot of fast breaks. But the Joker and MB, the sets great players, you gotta use them. just such great players. You gotta, you gotta use them. You know, the small ball thing is, the war you started to small ball thing and had great success and they've been great for the league.
Starting point is 01:19:54 But like, you have to have special, you have to have, you have to have the two greatest shooters ever. That's all the way through. You can't just run out there with any small guys. You gotta, you gotta, which is actually probably one of the issues in the NBA we have today.
Starting point is 01:20:09 Everybody's trying to be like the warriors without step and clay. While we have so many peaks and valleys on these three-point shooting situation, like, wait a minute. Are y'all can't be good at shooting trees? Step and clay. Step, not in there.
Starting point is 01:20:24 I want them to shoot now at a time. I don't want some of you other guys shooting trees. I've been clay. I want to finish you know the time. I don't want some of you other guys shoot trees. But man the Joker and Mb you can I guess you can do Yana's in Echo's e7 Fitaal. Oh yeah. But we other than that we still don't have a lot of big guys because the three-point shot is here to stay. It's probably overused to a certain degree. But hey, I'm gonna, man, I can watch that joke and do his thing, man. It's a beautiful thing. It's fun. It's beautiful. And he's such a great kid too. I mean, he's just such a great humble kid. You got to love it. Makes it easy to rule form, man. Yeah. You do. I love why simply basketball.
Starting point is 01:21:07 What do you say to the people right now that are saying the finals are lacking the star power? There's no LeBron, no Steph. I mean, I feel like this is how stars are born, right? I don't know. What do you, yeah? I hate that when I hear it because you have to earn the right to get to these points as players. You guys earn the right to get to the Super Bowl. Travis earned the right to get to the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:21:37 Like if y'all just want to say, hey, let's just put stars in there every year. Like, no, hell no. Right. That's the beauty hell no. Right. That's the beauty of sports. Right. That's why I love it. Like, you don't care what neighborhoods you come from,
Starting point is 01:21:52 no matter how rich you are, no matter what color you are, no matter what religion you are. It's like, hey, let's just go play and the team is gonna earn it. They go earn it. Yeah. I hate when I hear guys on the media bad mouth small markets. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:09 Or like, come on man. I love watching greatness. Yeah. Like the Super Bowl. I bet on the Eagles because I'm an Eagles fan. Come on, we can't keep bringing this up, Charlie. It was a heck of a game. It was. It was a heck of a game. It was a heck of a game.
Starting point is 01:22:27 And like, the best team won in my opinion. I mean, it works. It cost me money. You can pay me back, Jason. I'll get your back. I'll get your back, Jason. Hey, Jake, drink some of you at the pub. Fair enough.
Starting point is 01:22:44 There we go. There we go. I'll get your back. Hey, hey, hey, drink some of you at the pub. Okay. Fair enough. There we go. But that's what sports are. Yeah. To do the nuggets, think about it. And this is what piss you off. This is what piss me off. If you can't give the Miami Heat credit for what they did, you're not a sports fan.
Starting point is 01:23:02 Right. I mean, if you can't appreciate what Jimmy Butler did to them in walkie-bucks, the New York Knicks, and the Boston Celtics, some wrong with you, you can't call yourself a sports fan. Okay. On the other side, if you can't appreciate what the Joker, I mean, even to mom Murray, this guy's been out of basketball for two years because he blew out his knee. Yeah. If you can't appreciate that, you love to see it, man.
Starting point is 01:23:34 It's just something like, wait, don't tell me you like sports. If you can't appreciate what Jimmy Butler and the heater doing or what Joker and to mom Murray, I think you think about this dude been out of basketball for two years, they blew out his ACL. Yeah, it's a long time. Yeah, I like it. And you know, when you get hurt, there's never a certain that you're gonna come back
Starting point is 01:23:57 and be as great as you once were. I mean, because you never know. Right. But what these two team has accomplished, it's great for me as because I'm up because now I'm just a fan Like in my team not in and I'm just a fan and I'm loving what I'm saying It's gonna be a great story either way. It's gonna be a great story either way. I'm with right I'm with you. Do you think has there ever been a A.C. to team to win the NBA finals? Do you know if that like, I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:24:28 A.C. never got this far before. Yeah. Yeah, it's crazy. You know, I don't think there's a A.C. never got this far. Yeah, but I'm right right here. Yeah, I think that's something they said. It would be the first team to beat like teams with the top three records.
Starting point is 01:24:47 Man, that's crazy. But they beat the ball to be Boston, if they beat Denver, no team has ever beat the beat to team with the top three records in NBA before. Wow. Yeah, that'd be amazing accomplishment. Well, that's a, I'll tell you what it's hard to hard to bet against a storyline like that, man. Hey, it is hard to like I say, whether it's a, I'll tell you what, it's hard to, hard to bet against a storyline like that, man. It is hard to, like I say, whether it's Jimmy or Joker, it's going to be an amazing story.
Starting point is 01:25:14 It's going to be an amazing story, playing a simple, I mean, I can say, I can't wait to watch the game tonight after we, after we're doing the podcast because the next two games, Debris got to win one of the next two if they're going to win this series. They can't go down three one. They got to win one of the next two games. Yeah, they got to get that home core pack. Well, you are, let's, let's keep this thing moving. Chuck, you were talking about how you're following you're going down to Florida
Starting point is 01:25:45 to see if you Stanley Cubs games. You've been doing NHL and NBA this post. So it's just as a fan. And you know, I'm so proud of our networks. This our first year with hockey. Yeah, I was about to say, when did you get it? Did you get into it? Because the network got into it or were you always a hockey guy?
Starting point is 01:26:01 No, I like hockey a lot, but obviously us, I mean, my network got to stand the cup finals in the first time ever, that's pretty special. It's pretty, pretty cool. Shout out to TNT. That's a word. The next studio is Wayne Grisky, Henry Lankwitz, no, those guys.
Starting point is 01:26:22 So we hanging out. Couple of more on childhood favorites. Yeah, we hang it out in between periods My boy Rick Got a head coach and job. This is he's telling me what to watch for. He says you got to watch his kid kill McCart He's like he's a stud. He's he's watching watch what he does. He's trying to explain again to me He ended up wearing the cons of my first most valuable player So I just I just want to support the team He's trying to explain again to me. He ain't up wearing the cons of my, for as the most valuable player. That's great.
Starting point is 01:26:46 So I just, I just want to support the team. It's so funny. That's a thank you. You know, Wayne Grisky was my neighbor and my boss called me and says, hey, I need you to talk Wayne Grisky into doing hockey. I'm like, okay. Okay.
Starting point is 01:27:01 Okay, I'm telling Agent now, you be here. I'm like, my Wayne, is going to talk to you. He's like, what? He says, when you think about doing television, he says, I don't do television. I says, I know. My boss want me to talk to you and to it. So let's sit around and drink some mose and some little bats
Starting point is 01:27:16 and. There we go. That'll get it done. No, that's who they get it done. Now watching more hockey, what playoffs do you think is more interesting or exciting NBA, your NHL? I don't think there's anything more exciting. Playoff hockey. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:34 I don't think it's that. In first of all, there's, if I remember that that's been eight to 10 overtime games, which all the overtime hockey. And the last game. Woohoo. It's crazy. It's crazy. I will watch overtime hockey in his sport, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 01:27:54 I'm with you, man. It's exciting. Especially for Indian. I'm better than free hockey, huh? Nothing better than free hockey. That's Southern Bell. You know, they ain't a fail, you know, they got, they got all these wacky rules.
Starting point is 01:28:06 They keep changing, trying to figure out how to do overtime and NFL. Oh, yeah. And there's no, there's really no right or wrong way to do it in the NFL. But man, in the NHL, overtime hockey is just crazy. Yeah, they got to figure it out. They got it. They do. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:25 Did you are you are you familiar with all the rules and everything in hockey? Yeah, I'm for me with all the rules. But she exact many times I like to beat the hell out of shack and only get two minutes in the film. I've been proposing. I've proposed that rule to Gidele. Roger Gidele, the commissioner the NFL, you get one hockey fight in a game, and there's nothing like it, baby. There's nothing like it. And you can tell the guys who really good at fighting. They got techniques.
Starting point is 01:28:56 They got no teeth. You can just tell, he's a fighter. You can just tell. And that's not the work, but when a guy who can't fight, try to beat one of the guys who can fight, he's gonna get that thick as hilarious. That's best.
Starting point is 01:29:13 You gotta learn how to pick your battles if you're gonna fight. You do, you do. Let's go down the career rewind here. So I'm bringing you, take you back down the good days, man. Let's use this section to get into everything I've ever wanted to know about playing in the NBA as we grew up watching you big guy One of the one of the things that we love to touch on is the draft day, baby
Starting point is 01:29:35 And you were you were drafted in one of the most legendary drafts of the entire NBA's history Can you tell us a little bit about what you were doing on draft day and whether or not you knew you were going to get selected where you didn't. I mean the 80s, the 80s was a whole lot different than anything we know about. Obviously, we were talking about our guy Shannon Sharp about getting drafted in the 80s and it's nine day different. You said he got a phone. He's he's like, he's ironically, he has my phone as well. So I said, I actually got shocked. So I was about 300 pounds in college. I take most people know that.
Starting point is 01:30:18 Yeah, between around $2.95 basically. So the six is at Baltimore. Six is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park.
Starting point is 01:30:31 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park.
Starting point is 01:30:39 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. 6th is at Baltimore Park. He says, we want to draft you, but we're concerned about your weight. He says, we want you to go, once you stop back here, the day before the draft, for what we want to New York, we want you to weigh 285.
Starting point is 01:30:56 And I said, okay, so I get down about 285, 83 somewhere in there. And then my agent says to me Now check you know if the 7 or 6 is take you they can only get you a $5,000. I said what like they have a hard cap in the NBA So if you get trapped about a 6 is you're gonna to play your first ship or send a $5,000 Oh my god, shit. I don't think it's gonna send a $75,000. I could have got that much in college. So we got about three days before I had to go back to Philly. I said, why don't you want to sit us a draft me? He says, what you want to do? So he says, He says, what do you want to do? So he says, we went on a eating bench.
Starting point is 01:31:46 No way. Oh, it's hot. We went to like, it is in the morning, you know, to get the Grand Slam breakfast and everything. All three days, all three days, yeah. Stopping fairly, I weighed 298. No.
Starting point is 01:32:03 I can't like, oh, that's crazy. I was 283. I got like 299 right in there and owner called me every name in the book blah blah blah blah blah. I can't believe you fat ass blah blah blah. And because all the person knew this was me and my agent. No way. That's amazing. He curses me up and down. I leave and I'm thinking like, woo, we dosh the bullet. And if you go back and look at that tape, it's just look on my face when they said, with the fifth overall picking it around,
Starting point is 01:32:34 the Philadelphia F and sixth select Charles Barkley out of Aubrey. I got to look on my back like, what the? How did this happen so back fired? It's everything I could not to get drafted. They still have to be We go down to Philly and up trade two players So my first contract end up being four years two million dollars, but I tried to eat my way out of Philadelphia. True story. That's amazing. Yeah, that's so crazy. That's awesome.
Starting point is 01:33:12 That's awesome. That's what that's how you get drafted right there. You did. But the best thing ever happened to me in my professional career is Moses Malone. He's about four and a half years weight of most important person in my career. I wasn't getting to play because I was still about 2.95 when the season started. And a couple of months in I asked Moses the most I was a little bit the same building I did. Yeah, I went up there. I said, most can I come see you tonight. He's a sure young fella.
Starting point is 01:33:46 I said, most of why am I not getting to play? He's a son, you're fat and you're lazy. I'm like, what? He said, you're fat and you're lazy. You got a lot of talent, but you're too big. You can't play it that way.
Starting point is 01:34:00 And I was devastated. I'm not going to lie. It hurt me. Yeah. He said, hey son, if you want to lose weight, I'll help you So guys the this guy who was already a hall of fame on the back end of career Let me before practice, let me after practice He says let's lose ten pounds. He gets me the 290
Starting point is 01:34:23 He says, let's lose 10 pounds. He gets me the 290. And I can feel like a difference working harder than he says, let's get to 280. And I get to 280. He says, now I'm actually getting to play. He said, let's get to 270, 260, end up getting to 250 and the rest is history. But if this guy had to took me under his wing, I don't know, you know, but I don't know how it works in football,
Starting point is 01:34:54 but I can name 10, 15 guys who ate their wear out at NBA. I'm pretty sure the same at y'all sport too. For sure, yeah. So, most of the long is by a far on the way to most important person in my basketball career because if he did not get my fat ass in shape, I don't know where I would be today. Plain is important.
Starting point is 01:35:17 Is it a crazy how veteran, there's something, when I first came to Philly, I was blessed to have a bunch of veteran guys around me, but I got a single out two of them Todd Haramons and Jason Peters, but JP in particular, he was the first guy that really Was what everybody thought of when they thought of being a pro like just Show up on time take care of yourself do everything right, but he also thought about the game as a veteran player And I feel like coming out of college, you don't have that in college. There's nobody's been playing the game long enough to have the same frame of reference.
Starting point is 01:35:53 And I just remember watching tape with him the way he would think about things. Because as before, you had only learned it at least for me from like a coach's eyes. And that was the first guy where you'd watch tape and you'd see the way this guy gets in the stands right here, he can only do this, this, and this. You see the way the nose guard puts his foot back right here. Every time he does that, he's doing this. And I don't, I feel like everybody touches on the value of mentorship. But that's when you know you got a good relationship and a good room is when guys are offering that up. But yeah, I had never been around somebody a veteran player like that and Jason was Jason and Todd both, but Jason in particular just had this way of
Starting point is 01:36:38 watching tape and thinking about the game and looking at it way different than I had ever thought or looked at it. But yeah, I can attest to that too. Yeah, it's such a great point because one of my criticisms of the NBA has always been these kids, y'all taking out a high school, they needed a grown person in the room. I said, yeah, I had Moses, I had Doc. I had Bobby Jones. I had my Reese Sheikhs, Andrew Tully. But what happened was they started taking players out of the high school. So now they just got a bunch of damn high school kids. And right. Yeah, I said they tried to develop because they were too expensive. I said, these kids
Starting point is 01:37:20 mean on a dark in the room. Like you said with Jason and Todd, like when I got older, I said, yo man, let me teach you how to do this, this, this, this, cause it's invaluable. And I said every NBA team should have a veteran. Not just, yo man, talk to him about how to dress. He has to do him how to save their money. Talk to him about like, yo man, why you got five cars? What the hell, five cars?
Starting point is 01:37:50 Like, Dr. J told me that one time, he says, son, how many cars you got? I said, I got four, he says, why you need them? He says, how many can you drive at the same time? And he said to me, he says, Charles, it's not the fact that you can't afford for a car. He says, the money you make now, because I'm not even thinking about TV at this time, he said, the money we make now,
Starting point is 01:38:14 got to last us the rest of our life. You don't need but one car. And I said, he said, he writes, he said, just take those cars back and get that money. That money got to last you for the rest of your life. And when I talk to young kids today, I see your man get one car. That's all you need. Yeah. You can have a good one.
Starting point is 01:38:32 Yeah. But just be one of them. But you don't, I said, and listen, save your money, man. It ain't going to last forever. No matter how much you pay, it ain't going to last forever. You got to say, that's why I think the veteran thing is really important. And like I say, for us it's different because at least in your profession,
Starting point is 01:38:51 you guys have to stay in college for three years. We were drafting kids at a high school. Yeah, 18 years. And now they changed, it had to be a whole 19. So I said, that that much better. I mean Still a young kid they give you millions of dollars at 19 You don't know you're asked from a hole in the wall with all that I'm glad to ask me that question man. We need some your man listen to those veterans. I think it's really important. I'm telling it
Starting point is 01:39:23 Yeah, I got a I got a touch'm telling you. Yeah, speaking of, I gotta, I gotta touch on, because you said, given these young kids, that much money, one of my favorite things you said the last time we chatted was, on that same mold was, hey, if you got money, time, and bad habits, it ain't a matter of if, it's a matter of when. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:39:43 We were just talking about how the league has changed a lot. Team seemed to much rather have the young guy that they can develop than have that veteran presence in the locker room just because a lot of the veterans, I mean, they get more established and or they are more established and want more money. Do you think that's the biggest change in the league since you've played or since you were drafted? Do you think there's something else that kind of hits that belt? It's just so crazy now.
Starting point is 01:40:08 Number one, blessed these guys. You know, Trab, I'm so freaking old. I remember the first time a guy made a million dollars. We were walking around high five in each other. And I planned with Moses, Dr. J. and those guys. Matt Johnson was the first guy to make a million dollars. He signed for 25 years, 25 million.
Starting point is 01:40:31 No NBA player had ever, and this is the mid 80s, no NBA player ever made a million dollars. Yeah. The year I came into the NBA, it was me and Michael and the Keem, we were the top in there. Michael, a team won Michael and Sam Buoy and everybody. The average NBA salary was only $250,000. Today, the average NBA salary,
Starting point is 01:40:56 the day the average NBA salary is like $8 million. We have, I think I saw, we have a hundred guys and we only got 300 players, a little over 300. Yeah. We have a hundred guys, a hundred and fifty guys, I think it's making $5 million or more. I think it's right at 400. We have a hundred and something, a hundred and 150 something, making a five million dollars or more. And if I see those guys are making 20, 30,
Starting point is 01:41:31 they're 40 million. Yeah, these super max contracts, it's crazy. Crazy, crazy. You know, I've been on Zon's case, he's gonna get five years, 200 and 25 million if he can get this behind and shape. I'm like, I got in shape at $2 million. I'm about to say,
Starting point is 01:41:52 Joke, you might have to go down there and Moses Malone, I'm down there in New Orleans, man. You know what, I hope he get it set together, because Travis was crazy. He's on it like, 21. Yeah. This deal is for five years a five years like 225 million. And five years is next year going to be five years like 350 million. I mean, it's crazy. He thinks this one's good man. I mean, let me say I don't hate on young guys out, but
Starting point is 01:42:19 I just want the kid to be successful. But, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, $102 million. He ain't going nowhere. He did next. Here's he gonna make $102 million. But the play basketball, he ain't going nowhere. Are you kidding me? He's not going anywhere anywhere. We know what? 50 million dollars yet a duke drew it the playback.
Starting point is 01:43:06 Oh, the travel country is spent the four seasons in the risk of how to play back about three days a week. Sign me up. I know, I want that job. Well, the money is definitely changed in the game, but what's also changed, at least his shrunk is the gap between US basketball and the rest of the world. Well, I say that to say this because there's a 7-foot-3 19-year-old out of France, out of
Starting point is 01:43:28 Paris that's going to get drafted this year. We're probably going to go to number one to St. Antonio Spurs. Have you seen Victor, to say, Wimby? Is he the real deal? I've got a better story for you. Okay, let's see. Okay. So Nike used to always take us to these foreign countries
Starting point is 01:43:48 during the summer to expand basketball. This is the way before dream things stuff. So I got five eight total NBA players. So we're in China, Where in Japan? There's one you we go to Germany. And Scott Epipin was a great defender back in that day and gear painting all those guys. So we play the German national team. They got to 7 foot dude named Dirk Navisky. foot dude named Dirk Navisky. Yeah. Let's go. Hey, okay. He's kicking our ass.
Starting point is 01:44:29 He's got a young guy. He had to be young at that point because... 18th, still in high school. Basically. Woothing ass? Woothing ass. What's that kid right there? His name is Dirk Navisky. He's going in the army next year
Starting point is 01:44:46 I prefer to do self-heat all he not going in a damn army Big target. So he finishes like He has like 47 against us I walk up a new man who the hell are you? He says I'm dirt and a biscuit. I said, you play ball over here. He says, well, we don't have college, but next year I'm going to the army. I was doing yourself a tell you not going to the damn army. Right.
Starting point is 01:45:16 Crazy. I get Nike to get his information. Because I'm like, yo, you're coming to the States to play in my college. I'll make the numbers work. Screw the NC double-ect. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:30 Gotta love those SEC boosters. Yeah. Chuck, we made contact blah, blah, blah, but bad news. I'm like, what, he's gonna get drafted. Oh my God. Oh my God. He thought, so he gets drafted that neck that same year that I
Starting point is 01:45:49 would say I don't care what it calls you're going to my damn school. Yeah you thought you had the next tiger baby. But to get back to your original thing I'm looking forward to seeing Victor Wampanyama I think is a great situation him going to the spurs. You have a great coaching staff. Oh, yeah. They're like the Miami Heat. They're going to teach him how to play basketball. It's going to take you some time.
Starting point is 01:46:15 You got a little skinny ass body. You got a little... Two bigs for legs. Yeah, he's going to have to...it's going to be interesting. We're going to have to be patient. We We're gonna have to be patient with him. You know, the spurs are not even close to being any good, but I'm curious to see, I hope it's great, because you know, if he's great,
Starting point is 01:46:37 it's great for my job and the NBA. Right, it's gonna be a learning curve with a God that skinny. I mean, these big old boys, they could not big old boys, they're gonna be testing it. But they wait on them. Yeah, they're gonna be a bit jealous because he's gonna be the number one pick. He's gonna probably get a crap load of money from some shoe company. So the young guy's gonna be testing him.
Starting point is 01:47:01 So it's gonna be fun to watch. I can't wait to watch it. He won't play the five though. He'll play kind of like the Janus like a three four. Yeah, because he's too skinny to, I've never, to be in the pro's all tough. And first of all, he probably can hold his balance trying to post up a big guy anyway. But it's gonna be fun to watch. I hope he's great. I do. I hope he's great. Do you, we love going down memory lane. This we were just talking about going down the career path. Do you have a welcome to the NBA moment?
Starting point is 01:47:33 Because Jason's welcome to the NFL moment was going up against Ray Lewis. And mine was getting absolutely rocked out of the incentive the next week by a guy named Bernard Pollard. Who is your welcome to the NBA moment? Well, it was Maurice Lucas, you know, the big strong pile of forward, played by the Portland Trailblazers. So a couple years before I got drafted, him and Darryl Dawkins had to fight and they're throwing haymakers. Maurice is like the toughest guy in the NBA. Darryl Dawkins wanted the biggest people like their bad stuff. He knows some all do yeah. No no like a real real fight. It's a heavyweight bout right there. Yes big heavyweight fight. Now
Starting point is 01:48:21 that's got Maurice was Bill Walms and forcer when they won the championship and I can say he hit that reputation, don't mess with my reach. So we planned the trailblazers like my rookie year and Maurice co-cocks me in the reels. I'm on the ground. I can't breathe. And I, you know, he made, he did it and kind of ran away in a heated moment. And I was like, wow. And I'm a bit intimidated.
Starting point is 01:48:54 Yeah. So I pull on Moses. Is this too 90, Charles Barkley? Is this 250? Is this 250? We're in there. Somewhere in there. I'm feeling intimidated because he was the enforcer and being, you know, I'm a rookie. I'm feeling too many the clock. He was the enforcer in the NBA.
Starting point is 01:49:06 And you know, I'm a rookie. I'm 21 years old. I don't know. Yeah. So I said Moses, I put him aside. I had times as a research me with a real serious elbow. I don't know what to do. I mean, what you think he says, okay.
Starting point is 01:49:23 And we go back out there. I want you to do the exact same thing act like you're going in for a rebound hit him in the back of the head as hard as you can and then kind of turn around and run the other direction. I said hi for an eye. Hi for an eye. I did I said are you crazy. He flankin you move right there Do what I tell you to do so
Starting point is 01:49:52 My god get him with a forearm like I'm spinning away He like I shook him up good too. I ran down to the other end He comes back down. He's just gives me a pet on ass Just want to see what you were made of young fella Okay me a pet on ass. Just want to see what you were made of young fella. Oh, okay. He wants to ask me. Yeah. That plays it. Like he's like, came up to me and we became friends after that. He says, give me a little pet on ass.
Starting point is 01:50:15 He says, just want to see what you made, young fella. See, that plays it. That plays it to my theory, baby. You had me terrified. That plays into my theory that we, uh, we, you did. I feel like I'm a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more like a little bit more Jack Nicholson's seat is right beside the visitor's bench. Yep. I go to check in the game, because I'm not starting. Jack Nicholson's young Charles Barkley, been watching your son.
Starting point is 01:50:55 Welcome to the NBA, you're gonna be a hell of a player. I said thank you, sir. I went out to the game, I called my mom, I called my grandma. Yeah. Yeah. I called, hey, I called everyone on. Yeah. I call a I call everyone a friend. God, Jack Nicholson know who I am.
Starting point is 01:51:11 I love it. Yeah. That they played that first, the first welcome to the league moment kind of plays into my theory of you didn't get welcome to the league. The league got welcomed to Charles Barkley, baby. And that's and that plays right into it. He just wanted to Charles Barkley, baby. And that's and that plays right into it. He just wanted to see what you were about. You know what? I was the Chuck never just. No, those vets, those vets are going to test you.
Starting point is 01:51:32 They do. You got to. You already know it. I see I see. And you have to defend yourself. But man, I ain't gonna lie. When I pulled both the side, I said, yo, mo, I was actually hoping. He said he was gonna do something.
Starting point is 01:51:45 You want him to do somebody? Yeah. Yeah. It's a young fellow. You hit him as hard as he hit you. I said, cause you know one thing about NBA fights, they ain't gonna last long. But even when man's shot got to fight, cause I said, I had planned on fight, Jack. He's the biggest human being in the world. You can't.
Starting point is 01:52:05 But I tell you what, that video is the best. I can't let him puck me in front of 20,000 people. Yeah. Yeah. When he threw the ball to me, I threw it back at him. I thought that was going to be the end of it. I knew that we were going to come from here. Because what I could do is I knew in NBA, NBA they're gonna break to fight up pretty quick.
Starting point is 01:52:28 Oh yeah. Yeah. No one of five big ass track because he's the biggest human being you ever gonna see. That's some good stuff right there. I mean that's my guy. Yeah. No man we love the dynamic man. Nothing better. Let's get inside the inside the NBA era So you you have this unbelievable NBA career What I don't how did you get into sports media? How long has it been 23 years for me with me with Kenny and Ernie and Ernie's definitely have a met in my life and Ernest is the only guy that I've met in my life. I'm a genius, also. Such a good dude.
Starting point is 01:53:05 And then, you know, like, I forget, probably been with Shaq for like 10 years, somewhere in that range. So, and it's been seamless. The only thing that was funny was Shaq. When Shaq first got the job, he tried to do something funny like every night. And we were like, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:53:26 You know, we got like six more months of this shit, right? Right? We're like, ah. Ah. They're like, the producer has to say, Shaq, we don't have to outdo ourselves every night. He's just, oh, what do you mean? He says, Shaq, it's just October.
Starting point is 01:53:44 We're gonna be here to June. Custard, June thing, the joke around the studio is was, we're about a month out from Shaq, set this up on fire because every week, every week he was like, let me do this this week. And then we did, it was crazy, never a while. We were like, hey. He's young, he's new. And then we realized,
Starting point is 01:54:08 like, no, he's going to try to do some crazy every night. Yeah. And so we made up a joke. We was like, well, how many shows in do you think he's going to set us up on fire? We like probably it's going to be like, and he doesn't realize he got like, he's going to exhaust all other options. The only one left is going to be like and he's gonna exhaust all other
Starting point is 01:54:26 options. The only one left is going to be him set a cell for fire. And that's what we're like your man. It's a long season brother. We're not even the Christmas yet. You can't out yourself every single night. The job I said we I says the game is
Starting point is 01:54:41 the most important thing that that'd be perfect. I said, but do relax. You don't have to try to outdo yourself. But he's finally realized, like, okay, yeah, yeah, what, I don't have to outdo myself every week. Like no shit. The diesel baby. Do you think you're more famous
Starting point is 01:54:58 for being a TV person out of your plane in the NBA at this point? Yes, because it was really like, I've been on television 23 years now. Right. And most people, the old people saw me play, not a young people actually seen me play. Right. So, so I think that's, that's the mix I have to deal with. Like, I've been retired for 23 years. So those people are old and they're not around,
Starting point is 01:55:31 so all the young people only seen me on television. So yes, to answer your question. And when you talk about retirement, you have to think about with this kind of retired. Like, you know, for most of my life when I met little kids, they'd be like, you're Charles Barkley. I'm like, yeah, Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. That, hey, that's how I, but oh, they think I can't play anymore.
Starting point is 01:56:11 I've become the guy from space jam. I'll tell you what, I love that movie. You mentioned interview. You guys almost brought Kobe on as a host with Inside the NBA. What, how did that almost take place? Well, so I guess they had been meeting with Kobe behind the scenes. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:56:31 And, but part of our job, we have to do several radio shows. And they always start. If you go back and look at him, you hear some time, and go and say, like, Charles Bargley from gonna be on Thursday night with TNT, blah, blah, blah. So I ain't probably doing five or six radio interviews a week. It's part of like, they won't tell people when you're gonna be on.
Starting point is 01:56:59 Yeah, it's like every time for the show. Yeah, they're on tonight tonight blah, blah, blah. Well, they told Kobe like, yeah, I'm not doing all those interviews. Like, no, that's part of the gig. People need to know when we're going to be on. Yeah. That's part of it. He's like, I don't want to do all that stuff. So he kind of got fired quick.
Starting point is 01:57:26 Before he got hit, hey, man. But he's like, no, I just want to show up on Thursday night. How you getting your fired on your day off? Yeah. That's a way. You can't just show up on your off day. Yeah. Now you have to show up like, and we're like, no, man, it doesn't work that.
Starting point is 01:57:47 It's not that simple. Yeah. And like I say, it was really funny. Like, so then he get fired and quit. What was the combination of both? How would the show be different if Kobe was on there? I don't think his personality,
Starting point is 01:58:02 I, what I mean, like, I don't think he's built to have a lot of fun. I mean, I know what you're saying. And I know that that is not meant. And any like, wait, I'm just going to say what it is. He is, like, my little metallic. That's why he's co-be exactly. This why he's co-be.
Starting point is 01:58:20 I don't know, like, I don't know if he was built to have fun. Yeah. Like, he's a real real She like he's a great person. I liked him resting piece. Yeah, like the real serious guy. I'm like And the problem you have if you're gonna do our show I don't think people understand we own from seven to two in the morning Nobody want to be down serious from seven to two from seven to two in the morning. Nobody want to be down serious from seven to two in the morning. Okay. Yeah. So I'm telling you, man, I've told you on the, on the steam room,
Starting point is 01:58:50 you, Ernie, Shaq, Kenny, you guys, I, and shout out to all the announcers and the broadcasters that are doing the game, play by play, man, but I'm telling you, I'll mute the game and turn some music on while the game's on. And then as soon as half time or pregame or post game, come on. Real show's turning that. Real show starts, baby.
Starting point is 01:59:08 And I'll turn that value back up. I do. I appreciate the kind words I do. You know how much I must love I got for you and your brother. I mean, I appreciate to be on a fan. You know a big guy. Let me ask you this before we get out of the inside the NBA. What is your favorite moment or could you list a few?
Starting point is 01:59:29 We got a few here, the police presence, the Chris Paul Clippers tunnel fight. We got sack tripping while running to the big board to be Kenny, the big board, kissing Kenny Smith's donkey. The bullies broke. We got a few. My favorite one. In my 40 years going on for,
Starting point is 01:59:49 I never heard the term police presence in the locker room. And I was like, and when the interview time, but there's a police presence in the locker room now, we're like, what? There's an NBA player,. These guys can't fight the leg. We don't need to cut. Um, that one was really good. The night check failed, which was hilarious. Oh my goodness. Um, the tonight that we did the, uh, when Kenny got ran over by the car,
Starting point is 02:00:31 we did the, when Kenny got ran over by the car, that one was hilarious. The championship club, when they wouldn't let me in, that going back to what magic was doing the show. And they had a party, oh, one of my favorites. So we used to work on New Year's Eve. And I was pissed. Because nobody's gonna be watching basketball on New Year's Eve. Right, yeah. So they had set up what they set up on New Year's Eve party that we could go to after we got off. And these foods had taped like that we could go to after we got off.
Starting point is 02:01:11 And these foods had taped it like a week earlier. And I raced over after the show to an empty damn room. I was so pissed. No, man, they had everybody dressed up. They taped it like a week earlier. They had everybody dressed up. They put up New Year's Eve balloons and everything. And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, there and it's an empty room. Oh, no. What everybody like, oh, we take that like last week.
Starting point is 02:01:54 I'm a somebody who was pissed. I like, yeah, right. But hey, that's the way we do, man. We want to make sure everybody have a good time watching basketball. Client sample. Well, you guys do a great job with a big guy. Let's, uh, let's do just a, just a quick last segment here. Um, this segment is called, uh, you don't have to answer, but we have to ask and it's pretty self explanatory. We, we just got to ask these questions. You can plead the fifth or say nothing at all, but, uh, or give us a good answer
Starting point is 02:02:24 for them. Um, during the 93 NBA finals, there's a rumor going around that Mr. Michael Jordan took you to play golf and actually gifted you diamond earrings or a diamond earring to try and get in your head. Is that true, false? You know, at the time, Michael was one of my best friends.
Starting point is 02:02:44 We put golf on hold. I've heard, you know, it's so fun. I'm glad you asked that question because I can put it to bed. Death is rumor. And I've heard other people say, not only on the comment on rumors, because they're so stupid,
Starting point is 02:02:59 because they just keep the fire going. They're like, what Michael took Charles out to play golf on every off day and buttered him up First of all, man, Mike had already made a pact that we was still away from each other doing the finals Now he didn't give me earrings one Christmas. That's a true story The note that this rumor that he took me golf and doing the finals and buttered me up is 100% not true. False. Yeah. knew it knew it.
Starting point is 02:03:31 I did this. Didn't even sound like something that could possibly but we had to ask. Have you seen Paul George's impression of you? I have. It came. It came out last week. Yeah. It came out on his podcast, podcast P.
Starting point is 02:03:47 We'll go ahead and play it here for you. That's cool. Yeah, I'm on a ruffles bag. How else you got? Can we get someone on the commercial? Oh, my God. I said, she went LeBron. We need, we need this.
Starting point is 02:03:58 We're LeBron, Taylor. I got a chowdon. I got to ask, because I know, I know Chuck had a hard time saying your name. Was it a lot of fuck up there? Asia so Asia oh Asia oh
Starting point is 02:04:11 So we didn't like shoot it together I want to eat a mess my name up for sure. Yeah What do people normally call you when they mess your name up? Asia Okay, I'm a mess upper name. Yeah, I just tell people They told Jackie do not fuck up today say her name Asia I want to hear some Charles Barkley. We like to get you to like let's do a little bit more you only said like a few words He's like a seducer Johnson
Starting point is 02:04:42 Oh, Johnson Johnson. Hey, Arja, how you say the name? Okay. Thank you. It's not bad. It's not bad. That's pretty good. He had the delivery down. Pat, it's fun to story. Probably, um,
Starting point is 02:05:02 it's probably 30 years ago. Yeah. Now, probably not even. I'm, I think I'm gonna tell you this the time. I get a call from John Madden. My agent says John Madden wants to talk to you about some. I'm like the great John Madden. I would love to talk to him.
Starting point is 02:05:21 He calls me. He says, Mr. Barclay, Mr. Madden. Madden, it's an honor and a privilege, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. He says, I need you to help me with this problem I got. I said, sure anything. He says, we got to stop this asshole Frank Callie and Dover doing impersonations. Oh, the impression is what he's like, have you seen it? I says, yeah. And I'm thinking. It's pretty damn cool to me. I love that when he did John Madden too. I love that.
Starting point is 02:06:13 He should love you. That's the sincere form of flattery. That's all. Yeah, that's all the honor. And he hated it. And I don't know how to get out of the conversation. I was like, let me figure this out. Mr. Madden, I'll get back to you.
Starting point is 02:06:31 Then I'll get back to you. But you hate it in personation. And I think in a time, somebody to do it is flattering, but man, he hated it. I don't even know how to answer the question. I'm not even going live. I mean, because I'm not, I didn't want to piss John Madden off.
Starting point is 02:06:50 Oh, yeah, right. You seem pretty serious about that one. I'll tell you what, he was not a fan of Frank. What, one of Frank's, one of my favorite impressions of Frank is John Madden too, man. That's probably his best win.
Starting point is 02:07:04 Oh man, I love him. He got a bunch of villains. But man, I was like, I didn't know how to get out the conversation. I ain't got even like I didn't want to say I liked the impersonation. It's a tough one to get out of it. We got to get after Frank. Hey, I don't like this Frank guy either. I'll win your job. Every say coach. Let's get into that. So the, the term goat gets tossed around a lot. Do basketball fans put too much stock into the goat conversation, the LeBron versus Jordan versus bird magic? I think number one, I think people with no talent try to start to debate
Starting point is 02:07:47 because they want you to call into their radio show and argue with them. Yeah. Guys on television who have no talent because they know people gonna start tweeting at them and doing all type of social media stuff. Listen, I think the best way to do it is go through generations. Right. Like, Korean was, for example, I'll be a rough soul in his day was to go. Then, probably Korean, then Michael, then Kobe, and then LeBron, I think you're being disrespectful to Larry and Magic if you don't mention them because, you know, I've said this before, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird are the two most important people in NBA history because those guys say the NBA. It was too black, too thuggish, two-minute druggies until Magic and Bird came along. And they changed the entire dynamic
Starting point is 02:08:52 of what the NBA is today. Obviously, Michael is like Tiger, took it to a whole nother level. But if it went for Arnold Jack and Gary Plared, those guys got the PGA to a going but Listen, I'm never going disrespect Kareem Obviously, Michael's the best I ever played against
Starting point is 02:09:15 Kobe was amazing And LeBron's amazing, but I Don't just say who's to go How many people actually saw Michael Jordan play? Who I mean they saw they've been living in LeBron's era. Yeah. I mean, actually you talk to the older people, they said Korean were better than both of them.
Starting point is 02:09:37 So I think I do, I think we make too much of it. I think it's lazy because like I say, you don't want to disrespect entities, guys, because I never want to leave out magic and bird because them guys, every time I see both of them, I tell them, thank you. They started this whole thing going with the NBA. Yeah. Yeah. I'm with you. I think it's hard to do it outside of different generations because the game is evolved
Starting point is 02:10:05 It's the same thing in the NFL today's game. You can't compare quarterbacks in today's game versus quarterbacks that played Even just 20 30 years ago. I mean, it's It just it's such a different time the game is called differently The the players playing it are different So you can really only compare really what the guy did in his time and how dominant he was against his peers. Yeah. And one of my good friends is Emmett Smith.
Starting point is 02:10:36 Probably got the only record that's never going to be broken in the NFL. That's interesting. Because you're probably right. Yeah. Nobody runs about. Run the ball again. Yeah. With that, a much. Yes. I mean, so now every passing record, I don't, like I say, I don't think they ever going to run the football Like they used to ever again so Your point especially with one guy. Yeah, like just one guy like you was I mean how many like a slow day for him was like what 25 carries Like that's like a slow day for him and is it yeah and quarterbacks now
Starting point is 02:11:21 You're they can all they can all play to their 102 basically now, so they can't get hit anymore. I mean, I mean, quarterbacks now, I don't know what the hell is rough in the past. Sir, I mean, it's crazy. So you're preaching the choir. Us two right here, man, we want the, we grew up on real bomb. I mean, I think you never know when they're gonna
Starting point is 02:11:46 call it either. Like in every now, you know, I have forgot because I've been retiring so long. I went back when I went back to watch that last dance thing. I'm like, they were beating the hell out of Michael Jordan. One to what? There's no way they would let any superstar in the league or up on coming superstar in the league get pounded like that gaming game. I love Steph Curry. Love Steph Curry. But if anybody would any shred of common sense tells me Steph Curry could have been taking those legs that Michael was taking. Come on, man. Come on. And I love Steph Curry. I ain't never gonna say anything better about Steph Curry. But if people are going to tell me number one, not just to body blows, the hand checking
Starting point is 02:12:38 where you could just hold a guy, he just couldn't move. But the Steph Curry guy hit like Mike was getting hit. He got broken in half. That's just a pack. And that's that's the tough dude too, man. He's a tough dude. You going in the paint? He's staying outside. No, no, Steph will take it to the right. You can admit the game change and not beat it in a negative way. I'm with you. So I got one more question than this. We got to ask, but you don't have to answer segment. If the if kids nowadays were to Google Charles Barkley highlight, what moment in Charles Barkley's career would you want them to see?
Starting point is 02:13:17 Is it, is it you throwing the ball to check or? A moment as far as basketball, it's probably something for the Olympics. Man, that's cool. Let me tell you this, guys, y'all can't do it in y'all's sport. The Olympics is the most amazing. Like the Olympics and the Final Fourth weekend are probably two of the coolest things I've ever done in my
Starting point is 02:13:46 life. There's nothing like representing your country. Yeah. And the thing that was shocked you the most, like when you go around the other athletes and they're like, and they're from some country and you know they got zero chance of winning like the actual gold medal Yeah, and they're just telling you how like This is the greatest thing gonna ever happen to me in my life Represent my country You're like what you're like you guys in America you guys don't get it y'all have the greatest country in the world I'm from some pulled up country.
Starting point is 02:14:27 Just, hey, and James, they're sending them telling you that. They're like, they're the ones saying that. You guys in America, y'all have the greatest country in the world. You don't understand. In my little country, I got zero chance of winning a medal me making it to the Olympics It's gonna make me a national treasure for the rest of my life and you're like, oh man
Starting point is 02:14:55 We'd be taking this stuff for granted you see behind me This flag oh, yeah, I stole this flag at the 90 front on doing a 92 dream team Yeah, on the on the first dream team in 92 and Barcelona Spain and everybody's sign is Anytime I got to do interviews I Do it in front of this flag because number one is United States flag, but This thing right here is got everybody who played on the drain team It means a lot to me Because I can say there's nothing better than represent your country and
Starting point is 02:15:35 Me and the guys and we all been really successful in our life When we talk about when you own the podium and they're planning to national anthem We all were getting goose bumps I'm with my goose bumps is thinking about Magic Johnson David Robinson Patryun guys who are ultra successful. Yeah, but when you stand on that podium and They're planning to national anthem. Hey man, it is, it's a goose, goose bump moment. It's ridiculous. Man, that's, that's all. First of all, that might be my new favorite sports memorabilia. I tell you, I've ever seen them in my life. That, I mean, talk about having the fourth thought one you're a member and
Starting point is 02:16:26 I think leading score Of the first ever dream team is that accurate? Yes, yeah, and then also have the fourth thought the First of all steel of an American play and then have all your buddy sign it so that it's cemented as the first ever dream team I mean, that's an insane piece of sports member. Well, yeah, go ahead. I'm sorry. You know what?
Starting point is 02:16:49 It was crazy about it is. We didn't know how big the Olympus was gonna be to be honest with you. Yeah. Like, because we had never been before. Sure. So we get to get to Barcelona. We get to Barcelona. So we get to the hotel. There's 5,000 people standing out there. Man. Just to watch us get up and on and on the bus.
Starting point is 02:17:24 every day for the entire that's amazing. Yeah. But what's crazy. So we get right, we go to practice, we go to a game. There's a police car in front or police car and back on the side. There's two guys on a motorcycle and was got a machine gun on each side, alone the highway.
Starting point is 02:17:50 There's hundreds. There's hundreds of people holding up signs. On the highway? I was. It's crazy. Gosh. In a time we went on the highway, that was, I'm not even joking, two or three hundred
Starting point is 02:18:05 people, just, and obviously, most of them said, Joe, I didn't burn it or magic, let's be honest. And so we would get together like, your man, this is a big deal. Yeah. Because actually, we didn't know how big it was going to be until we got there. We didn't know it was going to 5,000 people sitting outside the hotel. I mean, and so we realized when we got there, like, yo man, this is a really big deal.
Starting point is 02:18:34 True. And from that point on, we're like, yo man, we're representing the United States. Let's get this thing done. Let's have a fun. We had so much fun. Starting point is 02:19:41 a trap. I'll see you in three weeks at the mat. You know it. Jay's we got to get together at the pub one night and pound a few brothers. All right. I'll drink on me as we said before. I got you. But I'm I'm I'm game for that. Thank you for your time, your
Starting point is 02:19:55 stories. You're just you being you big guy.
