Newcomers: Sports, with Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus - The Lego Batman Movie (w/ Sam Richardson)

Episode Date: March 12, 2024

This week, Lauren and Nicole watch The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and experience the auditory gift that is Will Arnett’s Batman. They are joined by very special guest Sam Richardson (Veep, Th...e Detroiters, The Afterparty, Werewolves Within, Champaign ILL) who deftly catches and explains all of the references to Batman movies of yore. Along the way, they discuss the hilarity of eating an entire Lobster Thermidor alone, the Dickens-esque morality journey Batman goes on this time around, and, of course, the power of friendship. Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Original. It must be great to be Batman. Batman, we love you! Thank you. I'm blushing super hard under the mask. Batman! Pray God. Thanks, Batman! I can only imagine he's going home right now to party the night away,
Starting point is 00:00:23 surrounded by friends and lady activewear models. Hey computer, I'm home. I'm home. One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Master Bruce, your greatest fear is... Snakes? No. Clowns? No.
Starting point is 00:00:47 It's being a part of a family again. No, now it's snake clowns because you put that idea in my head. Sir, you need to take responsibility for your life, and it starts by raising the young orphan you adopted. I thought I was being sarcastic. Hello, secret camera. We built this city. What? It's the Batcave.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Look, it's the Bat-sub! Don't touch that! The Bat-sapling! Don't touch that either! It's the Bat-kayak! Do I get a costume? I love it! But his pants are just a little tight.
Starting point is 00:01:12 I got an idea. It's better! I can only look you in the eyes right now. Hi, Batman! No way! Come catch your greatest enemy. Superman is my greatest enemy. Superman's not a bad guy!
Starting point is 00:01:20 And I say that I don't currently have a bad guy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am fighting the greatest enemy. I am catch your greatest enemy. Superman is my greatest enemy. Superman's not a bad guy. And I say that I don't currently have a bad guy. I am fighting a few different people. I like to fight around.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Hi, Barbara Gordon, new police commissioner. It's my dream for the police force to team up with Batman. What? Wouldn't that be better? I hate everything you just said. I'm falling! Gotcha. Nice.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Initialize master build. Got it. Here you go, father. I need an elbow. I need a macaroni. Yes, we did it. Pretty cool, huh? Why did you build this thing
Starting point is 00:01:59 with only one sheet? Uh, because last I checked, I only had one butt. Let's go defeat the Joker. Woo! We're going on a family trip. I can wear my costume, too. Well, luckily for us, you left your costume back in.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Rip! Oh, no. Under your clothes. That's perfect. Ooh. 🎵 The Lego Batman Movie! Oh no. Wow, we're doing it. I'm Nicole Byer.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I'm Lauren Lapkus. And this season we have been deeply covering the Batman movie. Oh, so deep. This is the 11th. Problematic even. Oh God. I did a is the 11th. Problematic, even. Oh, God. I did a stand-up show where I brought up Batman and Robin. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:03:09 I would have nowhere. This is what's wrong with us. It's bad. This is bad. I've made jokes recently about both Batman and Star Wars, and I think I should be arrested. Take her away. This is the 11th episode of our sixth season, and we are working our way through movies within the Batman universe with the help of fellow newcomers, super fans, and sometimes even people who have contributed.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Yeah, it's going to be 13 episodes culminating in a very exciting livestream episode! We'll cover as much as we can to get an overview of the franchise, But guess what? We can't get to every dang thing. We can't. But today we're going to be talking about the Lego Batman movie, which is available with a subscription on Max and Prime Video. And you can also watch it for a fee on Apple TV+, Google Play, and Vudu. Yeah, and guess what? Like always, we have a guest. He's an actor, writer, comedian, and producer.
Starting point is 00:04:03 You've seen him on Veep, I Think You Should Leave, After Party, Ted Lasso, and of course the show he co-created, Detroiters. Welcome back Sam Richardson! Wow! Wow! Am I okay? No. It's good. It's great.
Starting point is 00:04:20 That's great. Keep going. Sam, okay, we can't wait to get into the Lego Batman movie with you. Are you a DC head? I am. I do love Batman specifically. DC movies I like. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Do you like Superman? He seems dumb. He's not dumb. He is the embodiment of all that is good. Excuse me. Except for in the one where he's bad. Where he seems bad. And that's the problem with those movies.
Starting point is 00:04:45 That's the only one we saw. Yeah, that's a bad take on Superman. Did you like Batman v Superman? I did not like Batman v Superman.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition? I can't believe I remembered the name. Wow, you remember the whole thing. It's incredible. It's seared in your memory
Starting point is 00:05:00 for a long time. Oh my God. I did not enjoy that movie. Okay, good. What about the Lego Batman movie? Loved that movie. There we go. Yay. Oh my God. I did not enjoy that movie. Okay, good. What about the Lego Batman movie? Loved that movie. There we go. Yay.
Starting point is 00:05:08 That's good. It's the sweetest of the Batman movies. It's very cute and sweet and funny. It was. And honestly, it came at the right time because I feel like we could get all the jokes and stuff.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Like, if we had watched it earlier, it probably wouldn't have hit. I knew who Sauron was. I know. I know. They mentioned Zod as well. Yes! I was like,
Starting point is 00:05:23 I know Zod. I know about Zod, I have to say. There's a lot of franchise references, not only Batman. Yeah, there was a lot going on. It's almost all references. Yeah. It's just joke. Joke a second.
Starting point is 00:05:36 We did our homework. We did. So we got to understand things. All right. Well, I'm glad we actually liked something. It's been a while. I think we haven't liked something. Well, we haven't liked the same thing in a very long time.
Starting point is 00:05:46 No, we haven't because I went off the rails with Batman and Robin. Yeah, although we did like Batman Begins. That's our favorite. We did. We love Batman Begins. It's a great one. It's a great one. And I think we feel really like smart because we liked that one.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Yeah, we were like, we really like Christopher Nolan and his world building. And that one was like a deep story with lots of good backstory. A very realistic take on the Batman mythos. Yes. Mythos. That's a good word. Let's incorporate that. Yeah, mythos.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Mythos. People are like, hello. And I'm like, mythos. Might be mythos. But I don't know. It's okay. Nobody likes mythos. A mythos sounds like a Greek island.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And I prefer that. Mykonos and mythos. You just went there. I did. It was nice. Mykonos and Mithos. You just went there. I did. It was nice. Ocean's beautiful. It really was. And not nary a child in sight.
Starting point is 00:06:30 I know you like them, but. I do like children. My own, specifically. Did you jump off a boat? I did. Yeah, I thought I saw that. I was like, no, what? No, I definitely jumped off a boat.
Starting point is 00:06:40 I think you have to jump off a boat in the Greek waters. You have to. But yeah, this movie was so fun And nice It was really sweet I still felt it was a bit long And that's maybe a personal problem That I have
Starting point is 00:06:56 It was an hour 40 minutes and I was like still? We have movie left? It felt like we could shave off 20 and we'd be good I thought kids movie Feels like we can make this a little bit shorter. Did you think it was too long? I didn't think so. Okay. I hear from a question, what would you feel would be like the clippable moments?
Starting point is 00:07:14 You know what? That's what's hard because everything's funny and cute or has a point. So, yeah, it's hard to figure out what to cut. But I was wishing it was shorter. But also when I saw that it was an hour 44, I thought, oh, yay, it's only an hour 44, because everything we watch is really long. So Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition was three hours and two minutes. Yowza.
Starting point is 00:07:35 That was too long. I got to write a letter to Zach. We didn't need the last two. The last two minutes you don't need. Didn't need. Didn't need. Who cares? The dirt rose a little.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I'm still mad. I know. Still mad. I know. Still mad. I know. Would you want a Superman casket? No. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:54 What kind of casket would you like? A Batman casket. Okay. Wait, what kind of casket do you want, Lauren? If I had to pick between those two? No, just anything you like. Barbie. I think being ashes makes more sense.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I agree. Burn me up. Get a nice Barbie urn. Yeah, you can do a lot with urns. Urns could be anything. That really opens it up. Put me in a cookie jar. Any shape, not just anything. Anything. That really opens it up. Put me in a cookie jar. Shape the more.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Any shape. Not just box. No. I'll think about that later. Let's take a quick break. We'll be back with all the Lego Batman movie you can handle. We're back with the Lego Batman movie. It was released right before Valentine's Day on February 10th. Date movie!
Starting point is 00:08:50 Date movie, date night! In 2017, it was written by a whole gang. Seth Graham, Smith, Chris McKenna, Eric Summers, Jared Stern. They said, John Whittington, get in here! It was directed by Chris McKay. And we are so grateful eternally to Wikipedia for the help in putting together this summary. Thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:09:20 It gets more general every time. It used to be the Batman fandom wiki. Now it, then it was like DC wiki. Now it's like DC wiki. Now it's just wiki. It's just Wikipedia. And of course, donate to Wikipedia to help keep it alive. Yes, keep it alive. Even though everyone clicks the X on that.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Sure do. So within the DC superhero dimension of the Lego multiverse, Batman, voiced by Will Arnett, who I think is hilarious, protects Gotham City and fights crime. During his latest mission to stop the Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, also one of the funniest people, and his team of villains from Destroying the City, Batman succeeds but also hurts the Joker's feelings
Starting point is 00:09:55 by telling him he's not as important in his life as he thinks he is, leading the Joker to seek the ultimate revenge on him. I loved this. Wasn't that cute? They had their breakup. It was so cute. Like, what are you talking about? I was like, but I hate you. It's like, we're not in a relationship. And I was like, oh, I get it. I loved this. Wasn't that cute? They had their breakup. It was so cute. Like, what are you talking about? I was like,
Starting point is 00:10:05 but I hate you. It's like, we're not in a relationship. And I was like, oh, I get it. Yeah, yeah. This is fun. You've had a breakup like that? Sure have. Where I'm like, you don't want to be with me? We're not together. And I'm like, are you sure? You're nothing to me. I'm like, what? So,
Starting point is 00:10:21 the following day, Batman's alter ego ego Bruce Wade attends the city's winter gala hosted by Mayor McCaskill Mariah Carey I caught that
Starting point is 00:10:30 I caught that I didn't I caught that I thought is that Mariah Carey that I looked up and I was like that's wild
Starting point is 00:10:36 I didn't catch that they didn't have her sing that's so funny I don't even think she has that many lines no this wasn't in the Wikipedia summary
Starting point is 00:10:44 and I was like how do we figure out how to put it in because I know that someone think she has that many lines. No. This wasn't in the Wikipedia summary, and I was like, how do we figure out how to put it in? Because I know that someone will not know that. I didn't know. That's really fun casting. And also just for her to be like, you received the offer of the role of Mayor McCaskill in Lego Batman. She's like, great.
Starting point is 00:10:58 So funny. What day is that? She's like, great, I'll record it in my trailer. Celebrating both the retirement of police commissioner Gordon and the ascension of his daughter Barbara Rosario Dawson didn't catch that either to replace him Wayne is
Starting point is 00:11:14 smitten by Barbara also during this scene they had two Legos that looked like me next to him I didn't catch that I need to see them there was like a curly haired black lady standing next to him and I was like is that me need to see them there was like a curly haired black lady standing next to him and I was like is that me
Starting point is 00:11:27 that's like a face on me I like when first of all I thought the Legos look amazing and like the sort of like different types of plastic
Starting point is 00:11:36 they're able to create are so cool and the way that she like shakes her hair when she gets out and doesn't move it's like there's just so many
Starting point is 00:11:42 cute little Lego jokes I loved it. I love it. Look, our listeners may or may not have seen the film, so I have to describe what a Lego is. I'm here enjoying the description. Different types of plastic they could create.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Well, they did do sort of that gritty plastic that's like on his helmet that's like sort of textured and then the skin. Yeah. It's great. It's amazing animation and I don't know how it's done and I want to know more.
Starting point is 00:12:11 Wait, we skipped the part where he goes home, don't we? Where he goes home and he puts on his road. His road? When he hangs out at home. I love that part.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Oh my God, why can't I say robe? Slow down. I'm so excited to talk about Lego Batman! That was my favorite part, actually, when he's watching Jerry Maguire.
Starting point is 00:12:31 And he's laughing. He's a freak. He's laughing at it. I want to live in his house with him. Me too! He's bored. I like when he's eating by himself in his moat. He eats a fully shelled lobster and you hear the crunches.
Starting point is 00:12:47 That made me laugh so hard. Okay, back to this fucking gala. So he's smitten by Barbara and this distraction results in him unwittingly agreeing to adopt the enthusiastic orphan Dick Grayson played by Michael Cera, which is so funny. It's a really cute character too. Those big eyes. I had those glasses. Oh, I loved it. Wayne is then infuriated by Barbara's plans
Starting point is 00:13:10 to restructure the police to function without the need of Batman. The Joker crashes the party with his villain team. The Joker surrenders himself to the police while capturing almost all the villains for the police in a fun little box, except for Harley Quinn, which is Jenny Slate. With so many villains incarcerated, Batman becomes desolate as gotham no longer requires his crime fighting
Starting point is 00:13:29 skills it's really funny like watching this after being so deeply entrenched in this world because it is it is basically the same story over and over and over again yeah and i'm like this is the silly one. There were points where I was just like, I wish I could be surprised in some way, but I know that I won't be. That is interesting that they keep making the same movie again and being like, you gonna come? For a hundred years.
Starting point is 00:13:55 You gonna come? And everyone's happy. Everyone's like, okay, I keep coming. Suspecting that the Joker's up to no good. Oh, how could that be true? Batman plans to steal a Phantom Zone projector belonging to Superman. Channing Tatum.
Starting point is 00:14:08 I didn't get that that was Channing Tatum. Oh, I didn't get that either. A device that can banish anyone to the Phantom Zone, which houses some of the most dangerous criminals in the Lego multiverse, only for Alfred, Ralph Fiennes, good get, by the way,
Starting point is 00:14:21 to intervene and advise him to take care of Dick. Batman initially refuses, so Alfred allows Dick to enter the Batcave, appearing as Batman before Dick. This sounds horny. It does sound very horny. Batman states that he is also adopting Dick and fosters Dick as Robin to help him in his scheme. Batman and Robin recover the projector from the Fortress of Solitude, breaking into Arkham Asylum, and successfully send the Joker to the Phantom Zone. Suspecting that the Joker wanted to be sent there,
Starting point is 00:14:49 Barbara locks up Batman and Robin. While the projector is being seized as evidence, Harley steals it back as part of the Joker's plan and frees him, allowing him to return to Gotham with all the multiverses villains he has recruited in the Phantom Zone. Oh, including Scarecrow! Because Benjik has told us. Oh, he the Phantom Zone. Oh, including Scarecrow. Because Manzoukas told us. Oh, he did.
Starting point is 00:15:07 Yes. And we forgot. So he is Scarecrow. Jusin Manzoukas. The Riddler is Conan O'Brien. Bane is Doug Benson. Starstruck. It's a character of Margo.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Two Faces. Billy Dee Williams. Oh, wait. Catwoman. Zoe. Kravis. Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy.
Starting point is 00:15:23 How do I say Ricky? Lindholm? Lindholm, yeah. Oh, I got it right. Voldemort's Eddie Izzard. Greenison Ivy. How do I say Ricky? Lindholm? Lindholm, yeah. Oh, I got it right. Voldemort's Eddie Izzard. Green Lantern, Jonah Hill. Clayface, Kate Micucci. Oh my God, I didn't realize
Starting point is 00:15:31 we know her in this. Wow. The Flash is Adam Devine. King Kong is Seth Green. Finally, Sauron is Jermaine Clement. Who informs the Joker that Batman is Bruce Wayne, which the latter mistakes as the two being roommates, which made me laugh. The criminals
Starting point is 00:15:46 attack Gotham and take over Wayne Island. This is this early in the movie? Realizing that Gotham... I feel like we're late, dude. It's gonna be wrapped up faster than one can believe. I know. It was a quick 140. Realizing that Gotham does need Batman after all, Barbara releases Batman and Robin
Starting point is 00:16:02 and teams up with them and Alfred to stop the new threat. Although his teammates achieve some success in fighting the multiverse's villains, Batman forcibly sends them away to get tacos and confronts the Joker alone, fearing he might lose them just like his parents. Sam, what you might not know is that, or maybe you do from this podcast, but we tend to read podcasts or read descriptions that take up three hours. It's fascinating. We cannot believe that we're almost done.
Starting point is 00:16:29 That we are flying through this. Actually, the speed that we've been reading is based on how we usually have to read like 10 pages. And so we're like, wait, it's about to be done. It's a clip. Y'all are quick. We have to because normally. The difference between the Batman fandom wiki and the Wikipedia. Yeah, it's Batman fandom
Starting point is 00:16:47 wiki also gets very deep. But you know, I also think with this type of movie, it's harder to analyze because we're not really talking about the... I mean, and we'll get into all of it, but I mean, I just feel like it's more surface, obviously. Yes. Believing that Batman is incapable of changing his ways, the Joker
Starting point is 00:17:03 sends him to the Phantom Zone before stealing the Batcave's stash of confiscated bombs to destroy Gotham. Meanwhile, Phyllis, Ellie Kemper... Didn't catch that either. She had a fun part being a little light-up thing. She did, a light-up Lego. Is that a thing that exists anywhere else or no? Do you know? No, I don't believe so.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Okay, great. I think they got tired. And they were like, let's not make a Lego thing. Let's just make it like a Lego that lights up. It's just a Lego. She literally is just a Lego. I feel it's not make a Lego thing. Let's just make it like a Lego that lights up. It's just a Lego. She literally is just a Lego. I feel it's supposed to be like God. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:30 And so in Lego land, a Lego would be made in his own image. Okay, it's deeper than I thought. Who is the Phantom Zone's gatekeeper? Shows Batman how he has mistreated Dick, Alfred, Barbara, and the Joker. Batman accepts his greatest fear of being part of a family and decides to change. Batman's teammates return to the fight to help him, but are endangered themselves.
Starting point is 00:17:54 I don't know where I added chooses. Batman makes a deal with Phyllis to temporarily return to Gotham to retrieve the Zone's escaped prisoners and arrives in time to save his roommates. Teammates. But they are his roommates. Apologizing for them for leaving them
Starting point is 00:18:06 and requesting their help to stop the Joker. They agree with Barbara taking on the Batgirl costume, which I felt could have come earlier. It could have came way earlier. Also, this felt very much like, not a Nightmare Before Christmas, Christmas Carol, Christmas Time. Oh, where he sees the Ghost Before Christmas.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Oh, is it the Christmas Carol? It's Christmas Carol. The Ghost Before Christmas? The Ghost Before Christmas? The one Dickens? Yeah, where it's like showing him his life being like, you know. Yeah, there was this thing where they showed the photo of him with his parents in the moment before they're killed.
Starting point is 00:18:38 And then we see them take a selfie and I was like, it's just like that selfie. And then it was and I was like, I'm so amazing. You then it was and I was like I'm so amazing you're so smart now who's the worst trans detective but I thought that was cute that he has a family because I
Starting point is 00:18:53 that's something we've missed in every movie it never ends with any sort of like relationship no he's never adopting well I mean in Batman and Robin Batman Forever oh Batman Forever and he yeah he does get a teen. Oh, the teen. Because remember, Robin's whole family died while he was rolling a bomb into a river.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Right, right. I don't know how you could have forgotten that, Lauren. I want him to have romance. He didn't make it clear that Barbara was a platonic friend here. They were not going to do sex in the Lego universe. Well, in the Lego universe well in the Lego universe yeah sort of admiration
Starting point is 00:19:27 yeah and then it's like how do Legos fuck like they would get stuck and then someone would have to help them I liked how we saw them naked like
Starting point is 00:19:33 I mean that sounds so gross whenever they would change pants though yeah and you saw like little flush toes it was so weird it was very funny also Robin's costume
Starting point is 00:19:42 with the little legs out that made me laugh and the glitter cape oh that Robin's costume with the little legs out, that made me laugh. And the glitter cape. Oh! That was funny. So with the help from Joker's team, who felt neglected by the Joker when he refused to break them out of Arkham,
Starting point is 00:19:54 Batman and his team defeat the escaped multiverse's villains and send them back to the Phantom Zone. However, the Joker's bomb explodes, tearing Gotham apart and the plates below the city. Yeah, there's just plates underneath Lego City. Batman convinces Joker to help him by telling him he gives him purpose to be the hero he is. And with the help of every civilian and villain, they manage to save Gotham, chain-licking themselves together with their heads. I really liked that.
Starting point is 00:20:23 That was very satisfying. It was really cute. Yeah. They like link up head to foot. Head to foot. And create a chain across where the bridge should be. And that was very charming.
Starting point is 00:20:36 And I loved it. In the aftermath, Batman reveals to Dick that he is Wayne Disguise, then goes to return to the Phantom Zone to face the consequences of his earlier behavior. Phyllis prevents Batman from entering the Phantom Zone
Starting point is 00:20:48 after realizing he's a hero and seeing how he changed to save everyone. Afterward, Batman gives the Joker and the rest of the villains a head start, knowing they will be no match for the Bat family. I liked it. It was cute. I liked it.
Starting point is 00:21:00 It was very cute. Have you seen other Lego films? I have. I saw the Lego movie, the first Lego movie. I think I saw that one at some point. I didn't see that. I love that. I went to the theater and saw that like three times.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Oh, three times. I loved it so much. So how many movies are there before this happens? I think this was the second one. Then they did Lego Movie 2. Oh. But Lego Batman was a character in Lego Movie. Right. Oh, I see, I see. I think I saw that one. Okay. But Lego Batman was a character in Lego movies.
Starting point is 00:21:25 I think I saw that one, and it was very, I think it was, from what I remember first, Everything is Awesome is the song that really gets stuck in your head. Oh, yes, yes, yes. But it's like really cute how they establish the whole Lego world. And then, I mean, this gets to play on everything. They've already established all the fun Lego bits, so they don't really have to do that as much, and then they can do all the Batman jokes. I liked the song
Starting point is 00:21:46 at the end a lot. The song was really cute. I stayed till the end. I stayed. I stayed. I was in bed. I also stayed. I watched it till the end.
Starting point is 00:21:53 I stayed on my couch through the credits. I thought, I was curious if it was going to be a scene or if it was going to be important to something I needed to know
Starting point is 00:22:02 but it wasn't. It wasn't at a time. Great. Yeah. Just friends or family. Yeah. Yeah wasn't at a time. Great. Yeah. Just friends or family. Yeah. Yeah. I really liked it.
Starting point is 00:22:08 It was sweet. Such a nice movie to be like, yeah, you don't have to do everything on your own. Yeah. Call a friend. Yeah. I watched like the last half with my daughter who's two and she was really into the whole Godzilla King Kong craziness. We watched Frankenweenie like every day.
Starting point is 00:22:26 She loves the movie Frankenweenie, which I think might be completely inappropriate. But it's really cute. And there's a turtle that gets made humongous into it. And then she just always calls it. So she calls the movie Big Turtle. And she was calling this Big Turtle 2 because she wasn't saying the number two. She was like, Big Turtle 2. There's a big turtle also.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Like I want. And then like she wanted to watch Big Turtle 2 again. That's great. Big Turtle 2 because she wasn't saying the number two. She was like, Big Turtle 2? There's a Big Turtle also. And then she wanted to watch Big Turtle 2 again. That's great. Big Turtle 2. Yeah, yeah. That's so funny. Very wonderful. I was like, Big Turtle 2. We can put it into our rotation.
Starting point is 00:22:55 I accept this movie as one of the ones that we watch over and over again. I can't believe. I love that. Batman's staying with you. Batman can stay. I mean, we watch Monstersers Inc. all the time too I really there's a few that I like know very well now and it's I never thought
Starting point is 00:23:10 you know I've always been a person who watches the movie one time and then kind of forgets it all and I now can quote Monsters Inc., Monsters University Frankenweenie What's Frankenweenie about? It's literally it's about a boy who's it's a Tim Burton movie and it's all black and white animation and then claymation
Starting point is 00:23:25 or whatever it is, but his dog dies and then he re, he stitches it back together and makes like a Frankenstein dog. Wow. Pretty dark. I know.
Starting point is 00:23:33 We kind of skipped the dog dying as we catch in time. We just go like, Oh, look, they're already doing this part. Oh, but it's,
Starting point is 00:23:43 yeah, it's a pretty dark film. It's really sweet. So let's hear about the awards and reception for lego batman it earned 312 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 80 million dollars i would say that's a win for warner brothers and we always want to make sure yeah we want warner brothers to win they deserve the world critics they had good things to say about this movie praising both the comedy and animation style it holds a 89 on rotten tomatoes making the second highest ranking batman uh on the site behind the dark knight wow that's actually really interesting. To me, it's Batman Begins, Lego Batman,
Starting point is 00:24:27 and then the Dark Knight. I'm gonna go Batman Begins, then Tim Burton Batman Returns, then Batman, the one before that, then Lego Batman.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Wow. What do you say? I go 89 Batman. Oh, okay. Dark Knight Rises. Oh. Sorry, not Rises. Sorry, Dark Knight.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Okay. Dark Knight. I mean. No, it's huge. I was going to say that's huge. That was a crazy thing. Yeah, no, that's not the truth. Batman Returns.
Starting point is 00:25:04 Batman Begins Lego Batman The New Batman The Batman Oh we haven't seen that or you have I have but I remember nothing I really enjoyed it
Starting point is 00:25:15 Except for he like wears jammies at one point it looks like and he's like flying through the city and I laughed and no one else did That's always good
Starting point is 00:25:21 You never know you might have to sleep at any time He flies right into a bed oh wait I forgot Batman and Robin Batman and Robin you loved that one
Starting point is 00:25:29 I really did that one was really so maybe Batman Begins Batman and Robin Lego Batman Batman Forever whoa we're sick in the head yeah
Starting point is 00:25:38 sounds like the fact that we can do this I know it's so upsetting and get a track of all the names I know because they're so close to what the other ones are called.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Okay, we need some trivia on this film. No way! Oh wait, sorry. Oh my god, okay. Will Arnett acknowledge that the raspy voice he used for Batman is the same voice he uses with his children when he's giving them important parenting information.
Starting point is 00:26:07 Hilarious. That is funny. Do you guys listen to Smart List at all? No. It's really funny. I have known him as an actor, but through that podcast, I've learned of his sense of humor. Do you listen to Smart List? I don't.
Starting point is 00:26:19 People love it. People love it. Yeah. I'm going to start today. Yeah, me too. I'm going to get a hobby and start listening. Yeah, let's play it now and have the audience listen to us. Yeah, I think it hears laughing.
Starting point is 00:26:31 We hope. Oh, boy. Bane's voice and accent in this movie is based on Tom Hardy's portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Doug Benson had been doing that voice on his podcast since the movie was released, and the directors were fans of Benson's podcast and hired him based on that. I do feel like there's a lot of podcast fan crossover in the animation world. I think so. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:00 Because they're listening to voices all day, so they're like, better listen to more voices. Billy Dee Williams voiced the nefarious Two-Face in this movie. Williams portrayed Two-Face's good alter ego, Harvey Dent, in Batman 1989. Huh. Yeah, you forgot? Sure did. Yeah. Some of my favorite lines in that whole movie.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Oh, do you know any of them off the top of your head? It was like, the people of Gotham have more to worry about than ghosts and goblins. It's so fucking good. Or so freaking good, sorry. You could swear. You could say. Oh, fuck yeah. It's so fucking, fucking good.
Starting point is 00:27:31 Yes, one more. Wait, he was not Two-Face? He was just Harvey Dent? Yeah, so by the time you, so he would have, I think the idea was that in the third movie he would have become Two-Face then it was joel schumacher and so uh timely jones played him instead of yeah because you only see um uh billy d williams like standing at the podium like talking a little bit yeah in the second one um there here are some memorable callbacks that connect to different movies batman's line in the beginning action
Starting point is 00:28:03 scene you want to get nuts? Let's get nuts, is a reference to Batman 1989. I don't know what that is. So that's in the scene where the Joker comes to Vicki Vale's apartment when he's about to tell her, and then the Joker comes,
Starting point is 00:28:18 and Bruce Wayne has to figure out what to do, so he puts the plate under his thing, and he hits a vase on her thing with a fire poker. He's like, we're gonna get nuts. Gang, let's get nuts. And then Joker shoots him.
Starting point is 00:28:31 And his line is, never ever rub a man's rhubarb. Wow. I love this. Wow. That's wild. You are a Batman head. I'm a Batman guy.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Wow. We need you here. Yeah. The shark repellent is a reference to the 1966 Batman. I knew that. Yeah, and they had a bunch of references to that one, which was cute. And when they went back through all of the looks that he's had. That was fun.
Starting point is 00:28:57 Yeah, that was very cute. I liked all the little video things. Early on, the Joker says that his plan is not like the two boats plan or the parade with prince music okay the first is a reference to the joker's plan in the dark night and the second is a reference to 1989 batman which uh was pretty amazing when the music in that one is it's very nice all that prince music uh when batman and robin are fighting the phantom zone villains batman is spinning robin around while rob Robin kicks away a bunch of Agent Smiths. Oh, this is a reference to The Matrix.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Well, I've never seen that. You've never seen The Matrix? Yeah. It's honestly great. The first one was really good. I heard the other ones that I don't need to see. The first one, yeah. Never bothered.
Starting point is 00:29:40 But there's a little boy in it who's like, talking about spoofs. Honestly, that's never been referenced to me before I've heard a lot of matrix references in my life it's not one of them and now I want to know I really like that part he's like a little ball and he's bending a spin he's like why is he ball I don't know because he's magic
Starting point is 00:30:03 okay after Batman agrees to work with Why is he bald? I don't know, because he's magic. Okay. After Batman agrees to work with the others to stop the Joker, the cast offer to help Batman. And he replies, what am I going to do? Get a bunch of criminals together to fight the criminals? That's a stupid idea. This was a jab at Suicide Squad 2016, which Criminals Fighting Criminals was the plot of the movie. Criminals Fighting Criminals is what saves the day in both movies.
Starting point is 00:30:26 It's a jab at Suicide Squad? I thought it was just a reference. Yeah. Because I'm like, that's all the same characters, right? It's like the Harley Quinn race. They're not taking it down. We don't think the Lego movie is taking anything down other than isolation and not being friends. Okay.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Another break. Holy Batman. Batman. In this new segment. It's not new. In this. Well, it's new to us. It's new to the season. It's new to the season.
Starting point is 00:31:00 Okay. I'm going to start over. We've been doing this for 13 episodes. It's not new. I really did. I've never called it out before. Holy Batman, Batman. In this new segment, we will rate Will Arnott on the definitive newcomer's Batman scale.
Starting point is 00:31:21 We're going to use our phones to rank this Batman across five unique characteristics. Preparedness. How prepared is this Batman? Does he get to use his little gadgets and tools? Detective ability. Does this Batman get to be a little detective?
Starting point is 00:31:33 Is he good at mystery solving? Voice gravelliness. How gravelly is this Batman's voice? Sadness. How lonely, brooding, or emo is this Batman? And finally, hotness, horniness. How hot and or horny
Starting point is 00:31:43 is this Batman? And reminder, he is a Lego. As I did it, I was like, Nicole, it's a Lego. Yeah, I didn't, that's not going to really change anything for me, but Okay, let's see how that changes. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Ooh. Ooh. Okay, preparedness. We gave this Batman a 90% prepared. I feel like he's very prepared. Very prepared, I think so. He's got a lot of stuff. He's got everything.
Starting point is 00:32:20 Detective ability, 61.7%. Who went super low? I gave it super low because he wasn't really detective. I think he's maybe the dumbest Batman. That's true. I guess he's kind of an airhead a little bit. He's an airhead boy. Okay, I gave him too much credit for being who he is. I gave him a little too much too.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Yeah. Voice gravelliness, 100%. 100%. Best voice gravelliness and all natural voice gravelliness. I don't think it's modified. I think he's doing that. Right? I'm worried about his throat
Starting point is 00:32:46 he has a naturally gravelly voice but I feel like the one we just watched was Ben Affleck was completely oh that was wild I didn't enjoy it's more fun to hear it yeah to hear someone try use the instrument
Starting point is 00:33:01 use your instrument actor sadness 75.7%. He's pretty sad. He was sad, but only when he looked at pictures. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Most of it, he could forget about it. And then he'd be like, aw. And you'd be like, oh, no.
Starting point is 00:33:13 But I think the plot point is how lonely he is in this one versus the other ones where he's like, I'm sad, but I'm going to go kill people. Not kill people. He doesn't kill people. No, no, very important. But it's just like, ah, I don't have a family. Yeah. But I felt like he was okay with it because he was crunching lobster's shell on. I was going to say he's chilling in his house.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Microwaving it as well. Yeah. I was like, these are wild choices. I love the microwave. He's standing in front of a cell phone. He's standing for two minutes. He's just staring at it. That was really cute. Hotness and horniness. No. It says 25.7. But there is, well, two people are bringing this down.
Starting point is 00:33:47 Okay, I gave him a pretty high score. You gave it very high. I brought us down. I gave it a real low. I don't feel that I'm attracted to him. That was a joke I was making earlier. However, I do feel that he is horny. He wanted Barbara.
Starting point is 00:34:01 That's true. But I feel like he wanted Barbara, but not enough to really be like, hey, are you feeling what I'm feeling? Yeah. No, he didn't try anything. Plus, it's a children's movie, so I guess, what are we doing? What am I talking about? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:14 Some of these we've watched have been kind of for kids, like the Tim Burton ones. Those are for kids, you think? Well, aren't they kind of? I mean, when we were kids, I feel like it was geared towards us. I don't think. I was watching this thing on it. They weren't geared towards kids, and then like it was geared towards them. I don't think, I watched this thing on it. Like, they weren't geared towards kids. And then parents got mad because McDonald's did, like, a Happy Meal for Batman Returns.
Starting point is 00:34:30 Oh, this came up. I remember. And then parents were like, this movie's not appropriate at all. And Martin Burton's like, I didn't make it for just kids. I didn't make it for the children. Yeah. But the marketing machine took over. Because I feel like when I was a kid, it was like a movie that everyone could see.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Yeah. Yeah, everyone had seen that in Greece. In Greece. My mother wouldn't let me watch Greece. Why? She thought it was inappropriate. It's all about boinking. It is. It's full grown adults
Starting point is 00:34:58 who are in their 10th year of high school. She was like, this is not for you. Well, it's kind for you. Well, it's kind of true. Here's a segment that we have. Taryn Killams, how did the score
Starting point is 00:35:11 score? So, okay, let's give our one sentence opinion on this. Who did, oh,
Starting point is 00:35:16 the score was by Lauren Balfe. That's probably not how you say that. I liked how you said it. How would you say that, Sam? Lauren Balfe. Yeah, that's what i would say interesting okay
Starting point is 00:35:27 and we just go that's right yes correct and that's how you do say it you're an idiot it's probably lorne balfe lorne balfe Lorne Baffet. Lorne Baffet. How can I help you? That's how you answer the phone from now on. No explanation. Lorne Baffet. I didn't really clock the music in, though. I honestly don't feel like I really did. The song at the end.
Starting point is 00:35:55 That was fun. Yeah, but I was more focused on the jokes, I feel like. I was trying to just pay attention because it was a constant stream of visual and verbal jokes. And the first song he sings when he plays the... Oh, yeah. That bad boy. He sings while he's beating up everybody. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:10 I forgot about that. That's great. That was really fun. Yeah, Lorne Balfe previously assisted Hans Zimmer on the music of the Dark Knight trilogy. So it's fun to get to do a silly one after that. This one's for the kids. I feel like Hans Zimmer has been around for a long time.
Starting point is 00:36:26 His name has been mentioned 5,000 times on this podcast. Yes. How old is he? Reference point. Let's take guesses first. Okay, let's do our QR code. I'm going to say he's 79. I'm going to say he's 62 years old.
Starting point is 00:36:43 Whoa. Oh. He is 66. Wow. He thought he's 62 years old. Whoa. Oh. He is 66. Wow. Wow. He thought he was 96. And not 96. Who's the other one that's like-
Starting point is 00:36:52 Tim Burton. Who did- The other music person? John- No. You did it like for Batman? Yeah. Maybe Oingo Boingo.
Starting point is 00:37:00 I can't even think of his name right now. Oh, Danny Elfman. Danny Elfman. That's what you say when you can't- Oingo Boingo. Oingo Boingo. Oingo How old is Danny Elfman? Oingo boingo. Oingo boingo. Oingo boingo. What does he do?
Starting point is 00:37:08 Oingo boingo. He is 70. Danny Elfman. Danny Elfman is 70? I thought he was older too. He is? He's ripped. It's time for five kapows.
Starting point is 00:37:17 It's time for our reviews. Of course, we love to read reviews from Letterboxd. Sam, are you on Letterboxd? I'm not on Letterboxd. Is that something that interests you to tell your friends what you think about movies? It's in person, I think. Because we can get you signed up for Letterboxd right now if you would like. Our producers are ready with a computer.
Starting point is 00:37:36 They're standing by. I'm too humble a man. Well, we are on Letterboxd as newcomers something we've never explored ourselves and we're sure I didn't know that we were writing reviews for this show until this season
Starting point is 00:37:49 even though we've said this every time and we always say now we're gonna say what our review is it's been six seasons she didn't know that they were being
Starting point is 00:37:57 and I had no idea to be fair I don't think it was all six seasons I think it might have started with Marvel just last time so you're not
Starting point is 00:38:04 totally just like fully dumb yeah yeah yeah well earlier I was talking to Sam To be fair, I don't think it was all six seasons. I think it might have started with Marvel. Just last five. Okay. So you're not totally saying. Just like 30 episodes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, earlier I was talking to Sam and I said, I got to go to Whole Foods 369. And he smiled and nodded at me. And then I was like, did I say 369? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:17 So she is off. You have extra days in your year. That's how she gets it all done. How does she do it? My extra three days? Four days? I don't know. So please follow us on Letterboxd at Newcomers if you are someone who is into
Starting point is 00:38:33 such things. And right now we are going to give a one sentence review ourselves and a star rating out of five stars what we think of this film. Anybody want to go first? I'll go. Oh wait, you know what? Let me tell you what these other people said first. Okay, fair. Lily gave it four stars and said, you can't spell the
Starting point is 00:38:49 Lego Batman movie without LGBT. You sure can't, Lily. You can't spell it, but were they represented? I don't think in the least bit. I don't think they were. So it's not a connection I would make. A lot of people on Letterboxd reference the gay undertones oh okay
Starting point is 00:39:06 I mean Robin Robin had a sparkly cape a sparkly glitter cape our queer correspondent Ali says yeah everyone was really into Joker Batman subtext
Starting point is 00:39:15 okay oh okay true very true yeah that's totally something that was going on okay I hear it interesting
Starting point is 00:39:22 I didn't pick up on that at all and then the glitter cape I thought was just a fun choice. Yeah. I agree. Sophie gave it four stars. Sophie says, how do you think Ben Affleck feels knowing that Bojack Horseman made a
Starting point is 00:39:38 better Batman than he did? Whoa, Sophie. Throwing daggers. Wow. Throwing that shade, Sophie. You don't have to say the horse did it better. Not the horse. What about the actor?
Starting point is 00:39:50 Yeah. Okay. Well, what's the one sentence review you would give this film in your star rating? Sam? I give it a five star. It's the sweetest Batman that we can learn from oh i like that i think i'm gonna give it five stars as well what a nice fun time um love legos love a good ha ha tee hee um lots of heart this morning i woke up and i, I love my friends who are my family.
Starting point is 00:40:26 I like that message. Friends are family. I like that. I called Sashir today and was like, I want to know what I learned from the bad man. I thought that was really sweet. That's a good message for kids to understand. And then I went on to say,
Starting point is 00:40:40 why don't more live action movies tell me that I can do it with my friends? Yeah, that's true. She was like, it's a children's movie? I don't know, Nicole. No, they don't say that enough. I would give this five stars as well. I'm going to say, as a huge Batman fan and aficionado, I loved all the references and jokes to other Batman films.
Starting point is 00:41:04 And it's really cute and funny. The end. Ooh, we didn't mention. I think it was the Loch Ness Monster who accidentally kills Sauron. Yeah. And then he slinks away in the water. That really made me laugh. I just didn't want this podcast to end without me mentioning that.
Starting point is 00:41:19 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm glad you said that. Actually, is it the monster from Not Jason and the Argonauts? Sorry, this is a very, excuse me. What do you call it? Actually. An actually. Well, actually.
Starting point is 00:41:33 It's a very actually. But I was, I don't know, but I was like curious what that was because he like shoots a blast out of his mouth. Oh, yeah. I don't know. And it was like giant. The like Godzilla type figure? Yeah, that Godzilla
Starting point is 00:41:47 with the four arms. We call that Big Turtle in my house. Big Turtle. That's Big Turtle. That's Big Turtle. Oh, sorry. Clash of the Titans.
Starting point is 00:41:56 Is he from Clash of the Titans? I don't know. I didn't know what that was. Is it the Kraken? Is it Kraken from Clash of the Titans? Oh, release the Kraken. Release the Kraken.
Starting point is 00:42:04 Oh, I know that. I don't know what that is, but I know that. I know that phrase, but I don't know what it's in reference to. I kind of only thought that was an NHL team. Didn't know that was a reference. Oh, the Kraken? A mighty beast that dwells below the sea. The swamp creature. The swamp creature.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Oh. Oh. That's what I'm getting off Google. Hey, that's what it is then. Was there a Harry Potter person in it? Voldemort. Oh, yeah. That's what it is then. Was there a Harry Potter person in it? Voldemort. And what's funny also is that Ralph, Ralph Fiennes is Alfred, but in the Harry Potter movies, he's Voldemort.
Starting point is 00:42:31 But he didn't play Voldemort. That's fun. And what is his name? Ralph? Ralph. It seems like it's Ralph, but it's Ralph. Why did he do that? Because he's very thingy.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Yeah, do you guys know? Why did he do that? Yeah. I don't know that he had any control. I think we should talk to his parents. We also love to read reviews about our own podcast. This one is from
Starting point is 00:42:54 Emma3232323 5 stars. Ooh, baby! I'm hibernating until the Superman season begins. Shut up. No. And my favorite duo returns. I truly can't wait to hear those crazy ladies talk about more movies that i have never have never seen and will never watch thank you i think it's a mistake you thought we were doing superman yeah because i got scared
Starting point is 00:43:13 that this was a suggestion to do superman i don't even know how we could we can't we can't i just simply no don't want to we actually have to put our foot down. His outfit makes me upset. Yeah. The kryptonite is dumb. His hair. Oh, uh-oh. All I want is that bathtub scene for four hours.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Yeah, we like the bathtub scene. I want to see everything. What happened next? Wait. I want to see them get out of the tub. I want to see them deal with the wet clothes. I want to see them put them in their washing machine. I want to watch that film.
Starting point is 00:43:47 I think you should do an indie that's just based on that scene. I think that's really funny. That would be great. Or a short or something. It's Lois Lane and Superman effing in the tub. Effing in the tub. Wait, Sam, you said you like Superman. Why?
Starting point is 00:44:00 I like 77 Superman, Christopher Reeve's Superman. Scott was also singing his praises. Wait, do you like Wonder Woman too? The show? Oh, no, no. I liked the first one a whole lot. Okay. Oh, you've never seen it?
Starting point is 00:44:17 I've never seen it either. Are you kidding? Second one I wanted to like a whole lot, but it was a little messy. Yeah. Who are the other DCers? You've got The Flash. Oh, yeah. He just, that movie just came out.
Starting point is 00:44:31 The movie just came out. Are we watching that? Okay, so. We are watching it. Can we say that? I feel like our lineup changed a little bit because Scott, I'm just going to say Scott made us do it. Scott like bullied us.
Starting point is 00:44:42 Scott was like, you can't do the Joker because Batman's not in the Joker. And he had his reasons. But then he said the Flash was more important to this specific Batman franchise. Oh, interesting. Because Affleck Batman has a pretty big, I don't want to say it's huge, but he does participate in the film. Yeah. So Ben Affleck has been Batman three times? Yeah. Wow. Same as Christian Bale the film. Yeah. So Ben Affleck has been Batman three times? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:05 Wow. Same as Christian Bale? Wow. Yeah. Michael Keaton only did it twice? Nope, no. He did three times? He did three times.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Also in The Flash. Whoa! Is Val Kilmer there too in George Clooney? He's not, but apparently they were supposed to be. Okay, okay, okay, fine. Wow. I'm excited now, weirdly. The only thing I've seen from that movie is the falling babies.
Starting point is 00:45:30 Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, you showed me that scene, and that was the most insane they were ever seen. In context, is it supposed to be funny? I think so, but even still, it's bizarre. It's so weird. It is. It's an odd choice. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:44 That's so funny I can't wait okay well is that the next one we're watching oh it's gonna tell me no I don't think so we got a little time
Starting point is 00:45:51 everyone out there please write a review on Apple Podcasts because we pick one to read on the next episode and we also ask that you read us on Spotify

Starting point is 00:46:08 yeah what is it it's the Sam Richardson do you have an X account I do Sam Richardson you ask it that way everyday you have an X account it's so dumb that Elliot Muskies was like I'm gonna rename it X
Starting point is 00:46:24 what's wrong with you I'm going to rename it X. What's wrong with you? I'm not on X. I was on Twitter forever and I left Twitter and it felt like nothing. I was so scared to leave. And then I was like, delete. And I was like, it doesn't matter. Just nothing changed in my life at all.
Starting point is 00:46:40 So I spent less time looking at that. Yeah. And more time on Instagram. Well, we're going to be back next week with The Batman, a movie I loved but remember nothing about. We're so caught up. This is from 2022. Oh, my God. That's last year.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Yeah. Depending on when you listen to this. Yeah. Yeah. It depends. So you do the math yourself on when that was. Bye. Bye. Bye. Newcomers is a production of HeadGum Studios.
