Starting point is 00:02:47 Daniel? Would you like to discuss anything? How's.. No. How was your Saturday? Yeah, I mean it feels good on this side of the table big cat. Congratulations on the win Thank you, Billy. Congratulations on the win. PFT is the first person I'm part of my tate to congratulate me on the win Jake congratulations on your win on Sunday as well Max in the World Series. I mean and your team's undefeated. Yeah, so Incredible we're riding. We're on we're riding. Oh basketball. That's what you want to talk basketball
Starting point is 00:03:14 Okay, everybody that has an undefeated team in basketball raise your hand not so fast-hands. Oh So Monday night football Bears Patriots It was quite a game. It was I was thinking about it I think it was probably my favorite Bears game that they played since probably 2018 against the Rams on Sunday I football when we almost made our good friend Jared cry because it was so cold and that defense was awesome And yeah, the Bears I listen. I'm not even gonna. I don't care about Hank No, I at all. No, definitely. I'm just excited the Bears looked good like Justin Fields looked awesome The Bears put together a competent game. They look like the team that wanted it more. They looked faster
Starting point is 00:03:58 I was so excited to just see something fun for the first time in a very long time And now you have to ask like why aren't the Bears on primetime more? They probably shoot a shame. We're not going to see them for the rest. No, they're one o'clock for the rest of the season That's too bad. Maybe some flexes because I don't know I mean Thanksgiving. Nope. Nope one o'clock the rest of the season. It was good to see Justin Fields run Because he wanted to run and not because he had to run They had so many good designed runs for him and I like okay So I want to hear from Hank because Hank's going through it
Starting point is 00:04:29 But in terms of like the Bears and like that was the first time that they put together an entire game plan With Justin Fields as a quarterback that was his best performance as a bear and it was it started right away I texted you guys the fact that like on the first drive when they were I don't know around the 30-yard line It was third and eight or something They did they did a pitch play to David Montgomery instead of trying to pass and potentially getting a sack and going backwards And it was like hey They're trying to find the little ways to always move forward and win this game instead of you know being like hey Justin Fields try to figure this out with not a great offensive line and not great receivers in these like clear
Starting point is 00:05:11 Throwing downs and then his runs is designed runs his runs where it like things broke down And he got out of the pocket and like made guys miss it was incredible I'm I'm the happiest I've been in a long time for the Bears and it was fun to watch and I'm just I'm just happy It's you know what you know why you're happy and I can see that you're glowing It's because when you what when you get to watch a team that's got like a fun Young quarterback leading your team like all of us got to experience over the course of the weekend That's true. Like you get you get a buzz going like it it it makes the rest of your week that much better And it's a guy it improves your mood to have a guy. Yeah, so congratulations
Starting point is 00:05:52 I think Justin Fields took a big step towards towards being a guy this week and the whole time I was like it actually wait I was not until the fourth quarter started where I was like wait are the Bears gonna win this game because it was also like Playing with fire. I don't know if you saw they had five fumbles and they recovered all of them Yeah, they're really there was there was that moment I was talking about on Sunday when we were talking about the Jets like I was just waiting for the disaster to happen And I'm not I joke jokingly tweeted out that I see them winning the rest of their the season that obviously is in the case But baby steps steps forward Justin Fields looking confident all these things, you know make me a happy person
Starting point is 00:06:29 I'm not gonna delude myself and pretend they're a good team because they probably still have a long way to go and Michael Parsons It's probably gonna wreck some shit on Sunday But I'm I'm just happy and and going up against maybe the best coach to ever do it and doing that it gets him in his house Bellacheck told us though. He did he did we all laughed and I laughed too But he went on for eight minutes about how explosive the Bears are and it actually proves he still got it I think that the game turned When Matt Jones broke the code and he went in studs up and a challenge directly on Javon Bruce into Javon briskers Dick, I don't think people were saying oh that hit his balls
Starting point is 00:07:10 I think he went just straight up toke lead into the dick and then brisker made an unreal Interception one-handed interception that I I guess now would be a good segue of where where you are Hank because after that interception Mack Jones comes out Bailey zappy comes in probably the most electric two drives like I of all time I I treated I was like I am Petrified of Billy zappy zappy because he's a gamer and like that felt it felt like the momentum had completely shifted I I was like this is gonna be a bad ending of the game The Bears are screwed now and then it just didn't happen before I yeah
Starting point is 00:07:47 I have a lot of thoughts, but I will say when those two drives happen like I cracked a couple beers I got so excited. I was like, you know, it's Monday night. It's raining. It's kind of just we know Let's watch this game. It's probably gonna be ugly bears stank. I think Was And it was I was so fired up. I was like this is fucking awesome I don't even I don't even blame you for being like this is holy shit We lucked into another great quarterback right here because if I was a Patriots fan I'd probably feel the same way and even as a non-patriots
Starting point is 00:08:16 We all thought I saw that happening and I was like good good for Hank Boston sports fans You deserve to have a beautiful young quarterback. You guys have suffered for we have to almost a season and a half Do you I feel like you got two half guys? Hank the old the old saying if you have two quarterbacks, you don't have one I think you've got an old saying you've got two half quarterbacks That might actually make you you've got a quarter of a guy right now I have I have a bone to pick with you guys If Billy's happy and Matt Jones like maybe got on each other's shoulders and put a trench coat
Starting point is 00:08:48 Yeah, they could get into an R rated movie before I get into my bone to pick with you guys They do it's like Bailey zappy looks like Matt Jones with just like a little bit like if he went to prison for a while Yeah, like a more sinister version bone. Do you have to pick with us? I haven't even talked shit I'm literally just happy the bit like that the Bears could have done that Against anyone and I would have had the same feeling of just contentment that Justin Fields finally looked good Before I get into that if you will let me okay, go ahead Eloquate, uh-huh bone pick away. Mm-hmm I've somehow in the past month or two. I've joined the
Starting point is 00:09:25 Sports town beat that gets become you know my one of my main jobs one of my main roles in life is covering sports towns And whether or not they're good or bad. I don't know how it happened But it has happened and everyone says I'm a Homer everyone says I'm a pats Homer and everyone says I'm trolling other fan bases when I do it, but the fact that Patriots fans were booing Mack Jones who played well last year took us to the playoffs and was a first-round draft pick And then we're chanting for Bailey zappy. That's a bad sports town move That I did not like that at all. And if you're Mack Jones, it's like everyone loves you I don't care. I don't care who you are if you are a starting quarterback and you have an entire stadium
Starting point is 00:10:04 booing you Your home stadium booing you and cheering for the other guy Like that's not easy to overcome. It's hard. Especially when you're coming off an injury too That I do not a guy you could overcome it though. That's and and this is where I can get into the bone to pick You guys have you guys are supposed to be you know, you should take You're the number one sports podcast. Everyone football podcast That's just a fact poisoning people's minds Why with the fact that game by game you can decide whether or not you're a guy or not a guy
Starting point is 00:10:31 It's not that simple No, you're talking like a guy that has never been in in in uh per guy tory Hold on trying to figure out whether or not your guy exists or he's not the guy You've had tom brady for for what feels like two decades So you've never gotten to watch football through our eyes the way we see the game and through our eyes We're always wondering if our quarterback and i'm not saying jesson feels as a guy yet. I'm he's guy fluid No, he's guy fluid where he's guy fluid that we have to go back and forth between being a guy and not a guy It's the it's the guy there. Yeah, he's he's allowed to choose his own path into becoming a guy
Starting point is 00:11:06 And i'm gonna respect that and so that's what i'm saying where it's like I I It's game by game You're not gonna I also don't appreciate the fact that people are trying to make one choice the other You gotta see film you gotta get experience. You gotta get some reps on your belt. Can I just wait? Can I just can I just can I just boil down what hank just said real quick? You're telling Pardon my take. Yes, not to be knee jerk reactions Overreact have bad takes. Do you know what the show? Yes, but when it comes to me and my team
Starting point is 00:11:36 I don't appreciate it and I think you guys are doing a disservice to the greater football community We sit on a throne of bad takes what if we just sat here every episode and we're like, you know, uh, there's some time Yeah, I see some nice things, but we're gonna have to wait till year three to make a judgment I think that's what I should say Brandon's doing is very interesting and and sometimes his methods work and sometimes they don't and here's here's why according to math I could see the argument for I could see the argument against I don't really know That's how I feel That's how I feel it could be mac could be zappy. You just gotta give him some time
Starting point is 00:12:12 You gotta give him some reps I also think it's like, you know Bailey zappy tried not to throw the Patriots onto the bus and in doing so threw him under the bus He got asked did you take any first team reps this week? And he said that's a question for and then he stopped himself and said, you know what? We're focusing on the Jets. Yeah, which obviously means he didn't get first team reps and probably should have if you did get first team reps He probably could have won the game mac jones was hurt It's like there's no you can't take that game and and make a decision one way or the other
Starting point is 00:12:41 I do think though after the game. I'm back on like it's max job to lose Okay, hold on Because that could have played well I best think it could have happened for for mac jones is for zappy to go out there and play that second half the way that he did And I I agree with you hank I think bellichick made a mistake in that if you're gonna start mac jones You just got to let him be the starter because when does this this doesn't work like when you go back and forth If college teams try to do it. It doesn't work in college like it's it's
Starting point is 00:13:11 He kind of put in put himself in a in a no-win situation Put mac jones in a no-win situation bellie zappy like If you if you think it's really going to be bellie zappy He should have started the game and if you think it's really gonna be mac jones, he should have finished the game I think the situation is much worse. I think it's matt patricius fault. This is why okay Let's cook so mac jones may have started and taken all the starting reps in practice But the type of offense that the starting offense was running in that first drive Was really a bellie zappy offense now. Let me now. Let me explain what i'm saying. Okay pages are a system
Starting point is 00:13:46 That's right, right But if you look at the the types of play calling that mac jones was doing and types of plays that were being called against cleveland last week That scheme was very different to anything. They were running last year And with that that's because they were to bellie zappy's skill set Bailey may have been taking reps with the second team, but the first team was taking bellie zappy wraps It was his system. Yeah, the rest the team was taking bellie zappy reps Yes, but bellie zappy, but mac jones was also taking bellie zappy wraps right in mac jones Can't so those types of i was looking at the passing concepts and a lot of them were uh run and shoot
Starting point is 00:14:23 And uh air raid type concepts now listen to this bellie zappy through the ball He had 1,300 completions in his first four years in college three at houston baptis university Wanted west western, kentucky. Yep with that if you take all of mac jones from under seven zero Billy's doing exactly what you want us to do on your show. He's he's really boring Being very smart I think he knows what he's talking about. Let him go off. Can't have it both ways, Hank mac jones only has i did the math of his alabama completions and pro completions. I think it's around
Starting point is 00:14:58 832 Completions, which is way less than the 1300 Like the reps that it requires to run that type of offense is a guy like that. You need bellie zappy Yeah, and matt patricia once a quarterback who has played in a past first offense Who can take the shoulder of the offense whereas mac jones has always played in a run first pro-style concept with guys who have way good talent like at alabama They're playing, you know, they're they didn't pass a lot. They did but they had way good talent their talent he's throwing to open guys where his bellie zappy was playing in a scheme wins the game type fcs d1
Starting point is 00:15:36 Area where he had to throw the ball to where the defense isn't where the wide receiver can get there He's a guy who you know, they were it's like third and two They're throwing the ball in those types of concepts It is a past first offense and that puts a lot less pressure on matt patricia And if he's about to game plan in the nfl So if you have a guy like zappy But the thing is the downside with zappy is that his release point is too low for the nfl If you look at the look short last night, right?
Starting point is 00:16:04 If you look at the cleveland gain if you look at what he did last night His release point is way too low causing the ball to get batted down and those interceptions. Yeah, there were those Here's one thing. This is good. That is my breakdown No, no, no, that was very good billy So matt patricia More than anyone is to blame for last night because they basically Put mac jones in a in a situation. He was never going to succeed it when he so there's a certain shoot Option route that threw the interception on where you look at the either running back or the y back
Starting point is 00:16:35 Scat back goes into the shoot goes into the flat if he's Covered he then turns up the sideline and that was where mac jones was trying to get the ball That concept needs to be drilled a thousand times It's something that bailey zappy did all at houston in something that is a bailey zappy type. That's the play Excuse me the play before mac jones through the interception They got him benched that played that there was guys going down the sideline. It was a shark wheel No, no, no, there was that was a zappy play, right? That's an option. Yeah The one that mac jones before he threw the interception
Starting point is 00:17:07 They had two go routes on the outside and one of the guys was wide open and mac jones just didn't see it Right. Yeah, so in other words. Well, first of all when billy says now you guys are going to want to listen to this I envision all our listeners like doing the meme where they put the earbud in their ear and turn it all the way up And start crying because it's so beautiful. Yeah, that was first of all. That was great billy I'm my trans I need to translate what you said to hank because sometimes hank only hears what he wants to hear Hanks in a defensive mood right now and what billy just said was that Bailey zappy and mac jones are both half guys and they're not the guy So that's what I heard really I think what needs to happen is the offensive line
Starting point is 00:17:46 He's learned to chop down guys who are trying to bat down the ball something that guys like Uh on the cardinals are doing that they did for russell wilson in seattle so that he can get those throwing lanes I think he can be the guy, but he needs to also work on some of the fundamentals that game managers have had which guy Uh, bailey zappy needs to work on like handing the ball. What about mac jones? I agree with that bailey zappy Looks very uncomfortable on handoffs. They should have mac jones. Just be their handoff quarterback He's a great game manager and then have bailey zappy do all that other scientific stuff You just bailey zappy's matt patricius guy. I don't know if he is the guy So joe jude, I just used up all my minutes
Starting point is 00:18:23 Something where it's like again the the mainstream media and the click beta holics and the people like big cat and pft Like they're just gonna focus on quarterback play But the reality the situation is they couldn't stop fucking billy football if he was a quarterback of the bears last night They couldn't stop you calling billy justin fields Probably better. No, justin fields was running quarterback sweeps that were god. They did have some design rods. No, all right So, but that's where it's like everyone's talking about mac jones and bailey zappy and you're right about the game Let's talk about the x's and o's you're right. Let's talk about defense the the bears What are we doing here the bears look like the team that was somehow better prepared and
Starting point is 00:18:58 They look faster and stronger and you also had trend brown had like six penalties Uh, so yeah, you're right the like as a as a total totality of the game The patreons did not look ready, but of course We're gonna talk about the quarterback because that's american sports, baby I'm a defense guy. It's the number one position in all championships. Not guys. So where are you at? Where are you at? I am back on it's it's mac jones's job to lose And if you play poorly, then it's bailey zappy's job to win and if he plays well, then it's bailey zappy's job Bailey zappy they doesn't matter that they won or lost if he played well in the second half
Starting point is 00:19:34 I would have been like he needs to be the starter going for it. He showed Besides those first two drives, which were again that first throw was not even a good throw And it got tipped But it just the adrenaline and like the energy and and obviously again bad sports I moved to boom mac jones, but the energy when that play happened and those two drives happened was was great Everyone was fired up But then he really showed nothing in the second half and had some bad interceptions some bad throws He looked short
Starting point is 00:20:05 He looked we watched uh the night in the gambling cave when we threw on all the old highlights We threw on the patrick mahomes and baker mayfield college game, oklahoma, texas tech I was watching that game and you could tell how different Pat mahomes looked when he was like dropping back you you could just tell i don't know what it was what he changed but bailey zappy looked like patrick mahomes at college when he dropped back. He's kind of flat-footed He just didn't really look too fluid something's got to change there. That's my you know qb analysis, okay? You look short and and flat-footed
Starting point is 00:20:38 So you kept saying that you know you thought about last year mac jones took you to the playoffs last fact you got To the playoffs i think with mac jones fact i don't know if you could say he took you there Because there were some games where you ran the ball Like every single snap except for three well zero negative 25 degrees. Yeah, but wind doesn't matter but wind doesn't matter hank Winning does it does and then well then once you got to the playoffs like i agree became a guy where He was very he was ill equipped ill equipped to win against a good team in the playoffs and now this year bailey zappy has shown more flashes than mac jones has shown agreed
Starting point is 00:21:16 So he had that he had the entire second half let's do a blind resume He had the entire second half to and he didn't have to even play like amazing He just had to play decently solid show some flashes. He showed no flashes should flash in the first half But but it was a bad throw and it was you know, okay, we're doing blind resume. Okay bailey zappy is the first quarterback, but he was drafted in the first round mac jones is the second quarterback, but he was drafted in what the fourth round Yeah, zappy So if mac jones was drafted in the fourth round and bailey zappy was drafted in the first
Starting point is 00:21:47 Which guy would you be completely behind did i'm not completely behind either of them? I would ask Who did bailey zappy lead the team to the playoffs last year? Western Kentucky did go to a bowl game. Hmm. That is a fact They also almost won their conference. They played utsa In san antonio tough place to play great game. They lost. I just think again, it's like you guys do this, you know You're not gonna answer the question. I'm not doing any jerk reaction. And then the world is falling and the world is No, no, no, no, no rising. No, no, no, what do you think every sports show is leading with this morning? Like i'm they should be talking about the defense
Starting point is 00:22:24 I'm not so so let me I was gonna ask that where are you at? On a whole With the patriot's team like you have the jets next week. Are you worried? Yeah? Yes Very worried. I wish we could go to the game. We work on Sundays. It's a shame. That is a shame Otherwise, I mean bill you can go stream No, I know. Oh, what if we did like a competition between the two of you where you have to eat some real spicy depending on whichever team Billy now that it's my team a hundred percent. Okay, so are you like is this
Starting point is 00:22:56 We're gonna have another complete weekend of exactly what happened two weeks ago Where billy's gonna freak out on all of us. Yeah, and like threatened to quit Max is saying please for pntv views. I all right hank. I'll meet you halfway The nfl is a fucking weird league anything can happen anytime like I went into that game last night And I did not expect that performance from the bears or justin fields because I haven't seen it before I saw it and I was like, holy shit. This is awesome. I also didn't expect A bill bellichick coach team to play that like lackadaisical maybe is the word but like they just didn't feel like they wanted it They couldn't stop anything but it's week to week. So you never know so you could be back next week
Starting point is 00:23:38 I am we talked about it last year. We've talked about it this year this whole realization that We're just very mediocre and and even if we somehow make the playoffs aren't probably gonna do anything is is It's hard for me. It's hard. You're struggling. I don't really know like I don't I don't really know like where am I with the Patriots? It's like We could turn it around a lot and maybe make the playoffs and then get smoked again So this is one of those moments This is one of those moments where you wish you were us
Starting point is 00:24:07 Because I'm gonna be living off of like that performance from justin fields. He just bought in my mind his fifth year option Like that's how overreacting I am and again, I don't think the Bears are a very good team But I saw something last night that I was like, yeah, let's start running this type of offense where he's Running a lot more and it's maybe more Lamar Jackson than it is pocket passer And Lamar was a good pocket passer. So that's not a knock on Lamar, but like use his feet He's an electric athlete. He looks really good
Starting point is 00:24:37 The other it happened last year too when we beat the bills and the weather doesn't matter game And it was like, oh, we beat the best team in the league. We have the best coach We can make the playoffs and make a run when the when the when those first two zappy drives happen It's like, oh, this is something special like where this this could be a run and then the game progresses and you're like, no We kind of just it was an electric moment. It was I I was sitting there being like I started cracking It was one of those things where it's like I need I started saying Yeah, I think Hank that um what you're slowly realizing is that bell check isn't a magic wand for everything And you're probably going into last year even the year before when like cam newton came out
Starting point is 00:25:15 And he played pretty well in that first game. You're like, oh, we got bell check. We'll be good We can make it where he's he's that much better than everybody else That he can turn anything into into a good player But I think what you're discovering is that might might not always be true. So on the fifth year Discussion where are we at with mac jones in the fifth year? I just gave jesson field. He got it Hank honestly, if you look he's not answering that question again If you I'll let you know after this week
Starting point is 00:25:43 Oh, it's a week week to week. Yeah, you gotta give him time. So one more week. We it's also we were six days too early Here's another overreaction. I saw last night people being like bill bow check. Also. He's not healthy. I until he's healthy I'm really not gonna be able to make a little bit of he's got some grace now in it though, doesn't he like Should we be having the discussion like is mac jones a dirty player? Because with the slide with the studs up and remember last year he tried to twist that one dude's ankle off He's a little bit of a dirty guy competitor. Hank looking at the last of the patriot's offensive drives We got a fumble. We got a punt caused from a bad down ball another punt from a bad down ball Two interceptions from bad at balls
Starting point is 00:26:22 If you have him running with the first team bailey's api that fumble is not gonna happen If you have the offensive line drilling those like trying to like hit guys low when they try to jump and swat it down That might cause some improvement a little pass blocking. Do you guys have patricia's number? Uh, no, why you want to call him? I tell him to get him on the horn with billy. Yeah, but these are all things But like then you're gonna have a guy who's gonna light it up And it's not and if he learns the run game You're gonna have a pass first quarterback in a run first offense. You're you're making a guy I hold my quarterbacks responsible. I don't disagree with what you're saying, but
Starting point is 00:27:00 I'm not gonna just say that all those bad plays and interceptions and shit. We're not his fault Right. The the other thing is I there was the overreaction on twitter last night being like bella check is an average coach without tom brady I show me any hall of fame coach that didn't have great players Great, that's kind of what you're saying pft like great players Are more important than great coaches are great like bill bill bill bill bell checks the best coach of all time not taking anything away from him, but like Choose any hall of fame coach. They had great players. They don't win with nobody's that's just a fact It's interesting because like joe gibbs won three super bowls with three different starting quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:27:38 He did and three different starting running backs. That's just kind of interesting Yeah, and one other thing I'll say is is I had a lot of I had a lot of uh, Chicago people Jumping down my throat because the Bulls beat the Celtics Uh came back in one dominated football baseball season. Yeah, but I had a lot of people being like Well, you did you did you did post a bat that was Well, yeah, obviously I bet on the the Celtics Patriots teaser. I mean It's not the first time like look at my mentions after a bet loses
Starting point is 00:28:08 But I was I'm we're moving to Chicago. I'm gonna be a Chicago native soon We've talked about how new york is an absolute joke in a city and they never won a championship or done anything So I I I root for Chicago success. I appreciate I hope that when we're there They can actually make even just even just make a championship. Listen. I and we can enjoy it as a city It's like if you're gonna live in a city you want the city to be alive and excited and and ready to go I hope that I hope that happens people will think hanks pandering But he was rooting for uh, the nix to get zion williamson for this exact reason He's always said he wants the next to be like and kevin durant good so that
Starting point is 00:28:41 But yeah, it's not that far away, but like if he was there, it'd be awesome. Yeah, right there. Um, okay, so overall Not a guy In conclusion, justin fields guy fluid. We have a guy. He's uh guy sexual He's he's gonna that was the first time that I saw it. I'm just happy. I've not I'm not saying it I didn't talk to you. I didn't say anything. I don't care. I'm happy the bears look good and and again we should be talking about the defense but because Bailey's happy could have played like the guy they probably so would have lost
Starting point is 00:29:14 Justin Fields looked unbelievable. He did. I like those offenses when teams just decide Okay, we're gonna run power and there's nothing that you're gonna be able to do to stop it. Yeah Yeah And I Billy Billy the the the block the blocking things That's a great point. I wasn't thinking about yeah I think once we figure out the the the blocking and was it just chop blocking people No, but like the Patriots haven't had a short quarterback In how many years dug fluty?
Starting point is 00:29:42 Yeah, I mean like Who knows like who's the offensive line coach? Did he come back? Skarnakia No, I'll tell you what if Skarnakia was on this team. I think that we'd see Bailey zappy He'd be in the shotgun and they'd be chopping guys down when they try to jump and swap passes I know that sounds a little more like an easy fix scenario, but zappy I don't know. I just think zappy's got so much reps and experience from throwing the ball Like 10 times like a thousand times more than mac jones. It's a lot of times more like you're in your good hand
Starting point is 00:30:12 All right last question about this hank I know you said you're going to go week to week here Also the the promo in the beginning, you know some teams like the panthers when they did it It was like a panther jumping on the stadium. They just did a razor Razor yeah, that was crazy. This is this is how this is how I feel as a patriots fan. That was crazy. So um If mac jones, I I think he's the starter I don't think bell check will do this again
Starting point is 00:30:37 If he has if he struggles for the next two three starts Zappy if he struggles next start zappy. What about if he struggles first drive? No, okay. What about mac has to play the whole next but I I am not I'm not I need to see both I'm not going to make a hard decision one way the other If mac plays bad one game zappy zappy plays bad. It's like you got to you got to earn it There's some weird stuff going on too because bell check Maybe giving two games each to the the sideline reporter when he was coming back out on the field He said that uh, we're not just going to stick with zappy in the second half
Starting point is 00:31:08 We're going to put mac jones in there too. Yeah, so he was allegedly planning on putting mac jones And then he said the score got out of hand and mac jones did say Uh after the game that bell check told him that there might be they might switch up quarterbacks Like he did give him a heads up beforehand. He said he actually said that he's like he was very transparent in that I could be taken out for zappy. I just think the fans booing mac jones was It's Shitty thing for mac taff the same shit with mitch. It's like You you're there rooting for the team
Starting point is 00:31:43 You're not the fucking coach root for whoever the coach has in there So as as the voice of boston sports fans Hank, you you would like them to be nice to mac Yeah, whoever's a starter cheer for them. Okay, you're not I can respect that. I can respect that. I like that Okay, anything else from week seven that we missed um We do a little college football as well trying to think oh organ's back. That was nice. Mm-hmm That's um, that's my big takeaway from college football. We're gonna have organ Oregon's back brian kelly's back brian kelly's back that game was
Starting point is 00:32:16 We were at that game. I mean was it was 17 to three and then And then they ended up winning 45 to 20 like that was I I feel bad because I do like laying kiffin and he's a recurrent guest But uh, old miss was a big time like fraud top 10 Yeah, and I think a lot of people snuffed that out when like lsu is unranked and they're They're favored against old miss. Yeah, and brian kelly turns out is still a good coach Very good coach and that's never been the knock on brian kelly. It's never been like oh, he can't do anything between the lines No, it's just like he's a weirdo. Yeah that nobody likes right I had that conversation with a few lsu fans over the weekend where they're like, you don't like us anymore
Starting point is 00:32:54 I'm like, I like you guys. I just don't really like brian kelly. I want I want lsu fans to be happy. I do not I can't root Hard for brian kelly. Yeah, I don't think that anyone in brian kelly's life really likes him Yeah, I think he's just like a kind of a miserable grumpy guy But sometimes those guys make the best football and he's a really fucking good coach and his teams always get better Yeah, they get better as the season goes along and now like alabama lsu at lsu is going to be an awesome game That game under the lights because if you asked us if you asked someone in september It's like oh, yeah, alabama is going to kill him But everything we've seen from both teams means that's not that's not even close to a gimme for our
Starting point is 00:33:33 We got to see a little bit of baton rouge ahead of that game. What three years ago four years ago They didn't score a touchdown But the environment in death valley is going to be crazy like if you give if you give people in baton rouge 14 hours to day drink before a game. Yeah, you're walking into the jaws of hell They were already I mean it was a 230 game on saturday and they were they were prime and ready to go so Texas is back and by that I mean like they were back to being in the discussion of being back And then they're not back and now they're back to maybe firing the coach. I I almost guarantee they're not gonna No, I don't think they're gonna fire them but the conversation has started again
Starting point is 00:34:08 So the thing with sarkeesian Why would you ever fire a guy that just got you Arch manning to come to campus the amount of money he's going to bring in his But he did commit like ironically the one sin that they care about in texas more than anything sometimes Is uh, he disrespected the eyes of texas Song after the game so a couple years ago Some of the players wanted to get rid of the song because it traces its roots back to a minstrel show And then all the uh big boosters were like we need you
Starting point is 00:34:36 Herman tell the players that we're going to keep playing the eyes of texas Herman fought back against them then all the boosters turned on herman The fact that sarkeesian didn't stay on the field for the eyes of texas If if your if your name is red macomes, you see that and you're like, I hate this guy. Yeah, get this guy out of my face Yeah, he's not one of us But uh, but the bottom line is I don't think they're gonna fire him But they they did play texas played good for the first like I don't know three quarters of that game listen the fact that uh
Starting point is 00:35:05 They're even like I know it's probably not gonna happen because jimbo fisher. It's so funny every saturday now his buyout just trends Um, and it's like how could you feel bad for this guy? He's he has I think it's 85 million If if someone would have to write a check and it's all all guaranteed. So every year I was looking at it was like even in like seven years They would still owe him like 20 million and the record for a buyout mind you is 21 million gust miles on At auburn. So like he he's still seven years away from the biggest buyout of all time But that that that is falling apart fast Yeah, they're three and four
Starting point is 00:35:42 And shane beamer at south carolina Basically has like the same record as him in the sec the last two years and everyone thought texan m All the recruits and everything and it's now now with the transfer portal and n il like half of those guys are probably gonna leave Yep, so I would I would also like to acknowledge syracuse football Yeah, syracuse should have won that game. It had it. They had it. Very disappointing. What did our guy tweet after? Oh, shan tucker shan tucker. I I love his tweets after he well He just gives an analysis the guy whether or not he's satisfied with his performance. Please. Yeah, so he said Let's see shan tucker. He always gives a recap of the game on his twitter. He said saturday
Starting point is 00:36:21 We lost our first game syracuse 21 Clemson 27 I'm not pleased with the outcome of the game, but now it's time to focus on winning out the rest of the season I'm pleased with my performance, but there's more I can do and I'm healthy Five carries 54 yards five receptions 18 yards in a td. Oh, I I didn't think he'd be pleased with his performance Yeah, that's interesting because he's had times when he's had great games and he hasn't been Huh, so now we've now we've got a guy conversation going on in Clemson because yeah, they pulled That actually is a situation though that like dj ended up winning because kade kulbnick didn't look incredible Yeah, but he looked better than dj uyonga lule, but dj has looked better at points this season
Starting point is 00:37:00 And and I think dabo said that the dj is still going to be the starter He just was turning the ball over so much But that was like weirdly if kade kulbnick had come in and lit the world on fire would have been It would have been over dabo actually right after the game dabo said i'm gonna stop you right now Yep, we don't have a quarterback controversy He's uh dabo's a fucking weirdo and uh, i'm trying to think what other what other big college football Jamu jamu lost, uh, but we didn't have a starting quarterback tatz and tayo was out And they they waited till the last second to announce that probably because it was homecoming weekend
Starting point is 00:37:32 And they didn't want to announce it earlier in the week because then people wouldn't go to the game Uh, so we look like we might be in bad shape next year. Maybe It was a tad early to literally start Fitting people for rings championship rings and banners and planning pizza parties, but you know what I Yeah, I would have still done the pizza. I had my heart on my sleeve. So uh, Listen if tats and tayo's since tayo had been healthy. We probably win that game against marshal We probably went against louisville this weekend or next weekend. So there's a lot of There's a lot of wood. It could have shoulda. There's no shame in it. I've I've started
Starting point is 00:38:07 Listen deep down. I've started to look at uh How wisconsin could somehow somehow win the big 10 west which would be hard It's a possibility. Illinois would well, Illinois would have to lose a bunch, but uh, yeah, wisconsin Say something nice about purdue. They just live to lose to wisconsin 16 straight Which is quite something scenario out there with the seven-way tie of the big 10 west. No, give it to me I mean, it's too. It's too much to even say but if all these things happen, I love everyone finishes four and five Oh, that would be so awesome And is seven-way tie. What's the tie breaker after that?
Starting point is 00:38:41 That's northwestern because they're four and two against the big 10 west They north west or well north westers is not going to win three games the rest of the season, but okay. All right, and So if they all I'm in for that i'm rooting for that. I'm rooting for that Although I see I see that it has wisconsin losing in minnesota that i'm like i i'm now back into um It's nice in college football that if you if your season goes to shit. It's like just beat your rival You know what I mean? Like that's that that could be fine. It's pretty much what auburn fans just do every year Yeah, like just beat albam and we'll be fine everything fixes itself at that point. Yeah. Yeah, um, okay Let's do hot seat cool throne
Starting point is 00:39:19 Then we have an awesome interview with john croc a great interview with uh jk area to bring down the world series And taylor heineke one question with a quarterback before we get to hot seat cool throne corps light Is our wonderful sponsor our weeks are filled with deadlines responsibilities and just stress in general But it's college football season and when the weekend hits you've got to protect your chill So this season make time to chill out and catch the game at your favorite bar And while you're at it order an ice cold corps light the beer that's made to chill Protect your chill this season with corps light corps light is the beer of college football

Yeah, it's too bad because we just heard back. Good cat me and you um from blake griffin
Starting point is 00:40:32 Oh, so we asked blake if maybe he had some words of encouragement for hank because hank's so down to the dumps right now Yeah, and blake said the Celtics team is the best team that he's been on Oh, here's hank. He don't repeat that. Don't repeat that. Sorry. No one tell hank. We're no one say that's a hank He's just back in the room now. He has no idea. Good to have you back hank. How's he cool throne? a piece of shit Um, I love you hank. I love too. Um, my hot seat is raw polinka Okay Why are you looking at me like that?
Starting point is 00:41:01 I'm just i'm waiting for the other part. We're making eye contact because we're doing a podcast You're scared to put your eyes out He's not defensive. No, what you no, he's not you're not defensive. I'm saying you're not defensive You're just lashing out a little bit. No, no Okay, my mistake. You weren't lashing out if I get attacked. I'm attacking back. I guess technically that's defensive I'm not submissive is what what you guys want me to be. Uh bonk They came out today the jazz at one point. We're willing to trade, uh
Starting point is 00:41:34 bogdanovitch, mike connelly, rudie gay and first round picked the lakers for russell westbrook and two first round picks Wow And they didn't do it. Wow. That's that's embarrassing. Why would the jazz do that? Oh, I guess they're they're trying to tank Yeah, the jazz are in a weird position, right where they're doing the dany angel. They might be they might accidentally be playing too Well, the tank spurs. Yeah Spurs are undefeated, right? Yeah No, the jazz aren't defeated spurs have lost once they beat the sixers, but Yeah, what is that saying anything the jazz are just
Starting point is 00:42:08 The jazz are in a position where they're like nobody told us that we're supposed to suck So we're going to go out there. Well, it's because dany angel hired a hired a Celtics Celtics assistant and he's coaching the boys up. Yeah, uh, so polinka did not trade westbrook What was it? Kirk goldsbury had a an interesting stat the other night It was like Russell westbrook's shot that he took on sunday Was the first shot in something like 10 years for a player uh to shoot like a jump shot with
Starting point is 00:42:36 A lead with less than two minutes left and more than 15 seconds left on the shot clock It was I mean for whatever reason I I had the the trailblazers and the hungry dogs So I was intently watching that game. I could not believe The way the last two minutes unfolded like the Lakers were dominating the game They put westbrook in the end and he he tanked he tanked the game Yeah, it sucks because we're not going to be able to tell the next generation That russia westbrook was a good player like an awesome player at one point. No, I would I would retire if I were him I would
Starting point is 00:43:07 I would go I would get demand to trade back to oklahoma city and play the rest of the season get a triple double and retire I would play in tracy migrates one on one league. It is shocking. He can't shoot when he shoots and you're like you've played I don't know 50 000 hours of basketball Yeah, then the the shot thing still doesn't work. Like that's that that just blows my mind. I've seen the ben simmonds that's he It's like 15.17 fouls. You have 14.17 fouls. He turns out ben simmonds. That's tough. Listen. Same thing We're we're we're hoop heads here. We're ball's life and what we tell you Everyone needs to remember you can listen all the different podcasts and all the analysis
Starting point is 00:43:46 ball needs to go in hoop Simple that's rule one. It's a simple game rule one in russell westbrook and ben simmonds They don't put ball in hoop. You got to score the basketball in the nba ball goes in hoop Figure out everything out. It's literally why like why stef curry Have four four tiles. He puts ball in hoop. You know that old drill tweet like keeps screaming at me It only makes my opinions worse. Yeah, that's what's happening with russell westbrook's jump shot Everyone's telling you everyone's booing you and trying to get you to stop shooting It worked on ben simmonds, but it's actually just making westbrook shoot the ball more
Starting point is 00:44:20 Yeah, he went 0 for 11 the other night. It was crazy. I hope it gets worse. I hope he just I feel bad for him I don't know. I don't know why I just do I feel bad for him because I think I don't know. I just always feel bad for any lebron teammate. Yeah, that's just kind of what it has nothing to do with With the abuse from fans or anything like that. It's just yeah, that yeah, no, I don't even you have to you have to Westbrook is a funny thing to say and I know that he doesn't like it but like the Yeah, just dealing with lebron. He's a scapegoat right every lebron team needs one That's probably why he got put in the game because lebron's like I'm not winning this game against the blazers Let's put in westbrook so we can all blame him
Starting point is 00:44:52 Yeah, I wouldn't be shocked to see what ham said when they asked they asked the coach of the lakers like Why why is uh westbrook coming off the bench? Is that possibly putting him in a position where he could get injured because westbrook told the reporters Yeah, that like he pulled his hamstring Because he's not used to coming off the bench And then their coach had to like go out there and say as diplomatically as possible We're not starting him because he's not good enough, but no, we're not intentionally injuring right right So his new excuse is like I can't score if you fun times lakers who they play tonight
Starting point is 00:45:27 They play anyone tonight. She's bet against them They're at denver on wednesday night. Yes, so technically tonight nuggets gonna smoke them My nuggets get out of lakers pack my nugs deep in there. You don't like that. You don't like that. That's good Uh, then my cool throne is billy mcfarland. Yes firefest segment creator He's out of jail And he announced he's got a new festival coming. Nice. So we should go
Starting point is 00:45:56 We should play we should go as a podcast. We should go we should perform. Yeah, but we should also attend of course and complain And sue I would love to I would love to be a performer at this festival There you go. I would I would do I would suck a dick Like that guy for the palette of water. That's me I would be that guy to be able to perform at billy mcfarland Long time. Yeah, it's a long time awo billy mcfarland. You're listening right now. Let's do it. Let's link up Let's build. Yeah. All right pft your hot seat cool turn. Um, my hot seat is Major league rugby
Starting point is 00:46:31 Major league rugby. We've been covering a lot of cheating scandals on this podcast recently from the chess anal beads controversy to uh, the fat bear week Stop the steel voting issues Uh, major league rugging fishing. Yeah the fishing We've uh, we've just gotten word just a couple hours ago that Major league rugby has permanently cancelled two franchises
Starting point is 00:46:56 Austin and los angeles. Oh, no, they just they just closed the teams up And I think awesome. I didn't know that there was a franchise rugby League it's called major league rugby. Yes, hank Uh, but so the gulgronis was the name of the team in austin The guilletini's was the name of the team in los angeles They were both owned by the same guy, which is weird and he named the team after himself and his drink in order to promote it Whoa, real weird stuff going on. Anyways, um, they were Circumvitting the salary cap like flagrantly to a point that it got so bad that they that major league rugby said
Starting point is 00:47:31 Okay, you guys can't plan the playoffs because we found all this bad stuff about you Oh, and also we're closing up the entire franchise in los angeles and austin And you're not moving forward as a team anymore pretty crazy stuff. That's pretty crazy stuff. That is crazy Um, my hot seat Oh, wait, my cool throne is phil kesel. Yeah phil kesel hockey's iron man Yes, he set the record for most consecutive games played And phil kesel is if you take one look at him You know, like this is what you can accomplish if you take your nutrition and your conditioning seriously as a professional athlete
Starting point is 00:48:06 You can play forever So I hope that lesson is well learned on the youngsters of today because phil kesel is a fucking man. Yes It's crazy that uh, He's he's gonna be hockey's iron man. It's a keith yandles who he's passing. Yeah. Yeah, hockey's iron I love the picture that goes viral anytime something happens with phil kesel where he's holding the puck When he I forget what record he set with the puck But um, they photoshopped a tentative dip onto it and so it looks like he's just holding up Yes, open haggen. Yes, he's got the potbelly and he looks like he looks like roi from the office when he got his dui
Starting point is 00:48:39 Yeah, I just love phil kesel. He's he's the man. He is the man the absolute man. We gotta get him on the show All right, my hot seat is uh, me because I actually am giving away a ps5 two of them and uh, I made the joke I've I've been doing the hack joke for a while now I thought I was gonna have to do it when bailey's app became in I thought I was gonna have to do it before the game started Because the bears have not been good so I decided to flip it and Because the bears want i'm giving away too So if you're listening to this right now everyone had to have guessed their number
Starting point is 00:49:07 I'm gonna have billy billy after the number is done You're just gonna twitter search my name and the number that wins and then you're gonna pick two random people Okay, that's how it's gonna be done. There's 40 000 replies to the tweet only two of them are winning I think i'm retiring from the ps5 game. This was a mistake a very big mistake. I don't even know how to get a ps5 Um, because you can't just buy him on amazon But yes, that's how we're gonna do it So end of the show listen and those two people be the winners will announce him my cool throne is erin rogers Because his teammates suck and that's what he said. So it's not his fault. He said my teammates. Well, no, he said
Starting point is 00:49:44 his exact quote was Let's see. He was on the pat mac fischo. He said Let's see when we had too many mental mistakes and errors on sunday It seems like we have double digit mistakes every week guys who are making too many mistakes shouldn't be playing gotta start cutting some reps So it's not his fault. It's his teammates fault So he didn't you also say like a job for him david back to yari some some days He wakes up and he was like, okay, I can play football today and other days He wakes up and his knee hurts so bad. He's like, I can't play. Yeah. This is one of the non football days. Yes. Yes. I also
Starting point is 00:50:16 Um, that's that's gotta be tough. We're like just depending on what side of the bed you wake up on You can be like an all pro athlete, right? And then just other mornings you wake up and you're like fuck this this sucks Yeah, um, i'm gonna we're in the trustry. So i'm gonna say something Deep down that I thought on monday night football And I know that this will then be spun for packers fans to be like you can't stop thinking about us, but Uh, I definitely had the thought in the fourth quarter. Like why can't we just do this against the packers? You could and that It would be nice. Oh, I forgot too. I forgot to throw the stat back at you billy god damn it Your analysis was so good
Starting point is 00:50:51 But because billy did the insult stat after the jets beat the packers the bears have beaten the patriots more times And the jets have in the last six years. That's very fair. Yeah, that's very fair. So basically when when exactly is Like I was like, what if this happens and then it happened? But yeah, hopefully in three weeks It's a different stat But uh, I appreciate and I want to record that I'm not deluding myself to think the bears are good I'm just happy about justin feels very happy. He's very I mean the design runs. I'll tell you what's good. It looks good. I'm happy Those bears could beat These packers. Yeah. No, no. Yeah, those bears could beat these packers. They could beat these packers. Yeah
Starting point is 00:51:31 Watch out Billy my hot seat is mike evans So there was a video of after the game against panthers where a Official line judge gave him a piece of paper and mike evans wrote something on it There was an investigation by the NFL. They thought there was an autograph seeking scandal some sort of Weird interaction, which I didn't even know the line judges weren't allowed to get autographs But he's mike evans is saying that the line judge was giving him the number Giving his number to a golf pro so mike evans could get better at golfing, right?
Starting point is 00:52:04 It was not an autograph It was actually perfect because they were like, no, we've done an investigation Here's what happened and it doesn't sound any different because it's like the the ref is a texan m alum And mike evans is a texan m alum and they were getting the college coach from texan m golfing coach To give like they were trying to link up something with texan m So it's like wait, so this is this is just the same as an autograph It's basically a guy who went to the same college being like hey Can I get your number to pass it along and do your favor? It's better than an autograph?
Starting point is 00:52:33 He's helping him out with his golf game. It's like a million times better I I think that what players should have to do though after games is they should have to sign A scorecard after the after a loss like imagine tom brady the ref walks up to him It's like here. You just got beaten by the panthers, but you still have to sign off. Yeah, it's just correct You only have three points. Yeah, is that correct? Yeah authenticate it right here. Okay, that'd be awesome. Yeah, that would be sick Hank, are you okay speaking of sick? Yeah, your voice sounds better. Thank you Your demeanor maybe not I need a water. Okay, I'll get you one. Thanks pick up
Starting point is 00:53:07 Am I cool through my cool throne is my quarterback rankings? Yeah, sam ellinger is now a starting quarterback as of this sunday indiana foul Yeah This is like billy low-key snapped when the sam ellinger news came out because He's like, okay everything I've thought has been validated So now billy's going to be a very dangerous weapon moving forward All of his all of his quarterback opinions are going to be gold That's why he went off and delivered like a graduate level thesis on billy zappy
Starting point is 00:53:37 Is because he's riding high off the sam ellinger news billy. I don't want because I told you right away yesterday I was like congrats. This is huge, but you know, this is now like There's something that to be said for your quarterback rankings always have sam ellinger and him never getting a shot You can basically be like I was never wrong. I know now. He has to play well. Yeah, because if he stinks Then you are wrong. It's the pressure has gotten bigger. I know I haven't really Accomplished anything the wizard of Oz, you know, where you think you have to curtain Pulled out and we're gonna see that. Okay. It was just preseason or we're gonna, you know, you're gonna be billy You got like super right. Yeah to stand behind your take. I know you are no
Starting point is 00:54:15 It's just the like there is It is nice when you can be like that guy was great and and you never have to prove one way or the other you now Like sam ellinger is going to get a legit legit shot matt ryan put out the pasture, which was I think good because It was painful to watch him if he takes them to the playoffs That would be I don't if he takes them to the playoffs and the jaguars don't go to the playoffs Is that is that a dub? Jaguars could If sam ellinger goes to the playoffs
Starting point is 00:54:47 You're you're in the original take was sam ellinger was a better quarterback than trevor lorenz I think the original original take was sam ellinger is the best quarterback in this draft Yeah, no, you you if sam ellinger even looks he won the bracket if they finish above 500 I think you get a dub like I think that's where the bar is. I don't even think it's playoffs I think if they can they're three three and one right now if they finish the season Nine would be nine seven and one. Yeah, they could go nine seven and one no eight eight and one I don't think it's a dub because that would just be status quo of matt ryan But if they go eight nine seven and one that's a dub for billy
Starting point is 00:55:23 What's his war his wins above ryan if that equals one then you're good I think it'd be the most hilarious would be if they just came in and they went old school and just ran jonathan taylor 35 times a game and asked him to be a game manager. They make the playoffs and then you can still claim He's a better quarterback than trevor lorenz. That's what i'm hoping for I do think he's gonna look better than matt ryan because their offensive line is not good And matt ryan's running for his life and sam ellinger can actually run It just all depends on the game plan. Yeah, if they play to his strengths I think they have been preparing for this waiting coaching him up till he got to this point
Starting point is 00:55:57 We're like, okay, he's finally ready to start that one that one Interception by matt ryan was like such an old man It's that I think they just looked at that tape when he just threw like a Five-yard pass in the middle of the field to a titans player and he's like just just stop this I stop this i can't decide if billy being right about sam ellinger would be like the best thing for his development Or the worst thing for his development. I'm rooting for him to his take day Like it could be very dangerous for this podcast if billy Really starts feeling well my bailey's api take uh from before the season has come through
Starting point is 00:56:28 I always thought he had way more experience throwing the football literally that I think it would impact How he does in the NFL and that might come true. I think this is one of those situations pft We need to root for billy. Um, and then we'll just deal with it later And it probably would be bad, but we'll deal with it later. I think I heard I think yeah, you could sunday Yeah, you could lose sam ellinger could throw like 10 picks. Oh, it could be a terrible terrible day When does uh do the pass play? Oh, and then you'd have to eat the spicy sandwich the jets Yes, so you are in this is maybe the biggest sunday of your life So zappy and the cults play the commanders. Yes
Starting point is 00:57:04 So this is the biggest sunday of your life zappy could play horribly. No, it's mac jones It's gonna be mac. It's gonna be mac jones. We think so but mac jones sure if he plays horribly Then that's good for you. No actually I mean, I think I think I got my bets in the right place because then if they play terribly my zappy takes bad In mac jones, his bad zap gets in zappy's bad. That means the jets have to win So then they win Either way, we're gonna have a billy parley in the barstool sports bar cults and jets to win That will be great
Starting point is 00:57:35 Yeah, perfect. Yeah, okay. I I agree I think that we should encourage them along these lines because it's like they're all things considered They're much more dangerous things that billy could become passionate about than quarterback evaluation You know, like if it's like if somebody gone back in time in like 1920s and been like You know Adolf this art's pretty good. You should you should probably stick with that Jake if the jets and cults wins monday show is gonna be interesting Yeah, and it's both of your teams too. Yeah, so either way there will be blood, which is and I'm not a lot I'm just
Starting point is 00:58:06 Bears could lose every game. It's like I saw it once. That's all I need I'll be committed to Justin Fields for life. Yeah Uh, my hot seat is giving away ties Oh, Jim Nance. Yeah, this will be Jim Nance's final ncaa tournament and as the voice of the final four iron eagle Syracuse his own will be replacing him. So Yeah, kind of crazy. Yeah passing of the torch. It's gonna be while broadcasting It's gonna be very strange not having a final forward Jim Nance. Well, he'll still be there He'll be doing the trophy presentation every year. Okay. Good. It's um
Starting point is 00:58:38 It's it's actually similar to conversation we're having earlier like Joe buck not being in the world series is definitely gonna bother me a little Yeah, I just Joe Davis was great. I Yeah, I like Jim Nance still gonna be doing masters, right? Joe Davis did not go to Syracuse. Where'd he go to school? Uh, I want to say beloit college. Oh, what's that? It's in wisconsin beloit. Yeah What's the sound of what's the sound of a fart in a in a toilet? It's funny. That's that's a point Yeah, I was right. Yeah, so is he is he still gonna be doing the masters? Yeah, he's still doing anaphylam golf Okay, okay, so I am gonna miss it
Starting point is 00:59:10 But I understand like he's probably in the twilight of his career Crazy. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know sad. That will be a sad one. Yeah, but he's got a good replacement coming as well No, it's not Jim. No. Yeah, he does. No Um, no, my cool. You can't make us love stepdad You can't does you can't does iron eagle does he carry around a picture in his pocket of how he likes his toast cooked Also, it just ruins the whole like this is you don't know that. Oh, yeah Jim nance rolls with a photograph of toast in his pocket So when you order toast at a restaurant, yep, he shows it to the waitress or the waiter and says this is how I like
Starting point is 00:59:48 My toast is what I want. That's crazy. I love it though And it also kind of ruins like jim nance season like like march into april was always like, hey, let's let's let's Well, no, we'll still have it because no, but it's not but it's not No, this year final four what? But no he's a trophy That's not come on and he's not calling the like elite eight either. Okay. Yeah, he's dumb I think he's normal college basketball. I love jim nance But I think this is kind of horseshit what he's doing. I think you have to either get out of the final four all the way
Starting point is 01:00:20 Yeah, or you're in it all the way. Yeah, you can't just say I'm not gonna announce the game But then kick it to me for the trophy presentation and that's kind of bullshit and I'll go one further I kind of view like the final four and masters is the same of it like if they just kind of blend together So you yeah, jim nance. Fuck you. Wow dead does Dead does but you guys love him on the show Jim nance. Yeah, so we can tell him he's dead us. Would we love jim nance on the show? Sure, I think so. Yeah, but he's dead. I think he'd give an order of class to this show. Yeah There's an award named after him
Starting point is 01:00:53 Oh really? I competed in it. How'd you finish? I was ninth. I knew that I remember that in my interview Every year. There's a rankings of the collegiate sports broadcasters and my senior. I finished ninth top 10. I'll take that. Yeah Let's be a little bit. I mean come on. There's always room for improvement, but there's a lot of good competition out there How many people competed I have no clue. No There's probably Over a hundred or five. That's good. Over nine people competed Yeah, so uh jim nance one last dance in houston, which is where you went to school this year Or where you went to school. That's where the final four is this year. That's right with freddy boom boom couples
Starting point is 01:01:31 And yes, and my cool throne is jackets. I don't know if we have any in here, but new part of my take starter jackets Yeah, our store. We have the black one and we have the blue core's light one. Yeah I'll just say the black jacket. You have the blue one is on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There is. I got the blue one right here The blue one's very nice. Um, I will say the black jacket that jake got Maybe my favorite piece of merch that we've ever put out as a podcast. There's like the uh, The beer bottle with the face on it. Yeah back, right? Yep. It's a solid jacket starter

Starting point is 01:03:25 Okay, we now welcome on a very special guest. Uh, it is Philadelphia Phillies legend He also still works with the organization calling games John Cruck Crucky, can we call you crucky? Can I ask that first because yeah, you call me whatever y'all want because because we know you Is crucky. We know you as the legend. Um, thanks. Thanks for joining us and uh Congrats on on the Phillies getting to the world series Let's start there with just what the scene has been and you've been around this team all year Uh, like what has been the noticeable change that you've seen for them to get all the way to the world series for a team
Starting point is 01:04:02 That was struggling to even get in the playoffs like mid september Yeah, you know, I It's so hard to put your finger on one thing. I was turned around for this team, but Um You know What happened in september, you know, brice finally came back after missing two months with the thumb thumb broken thumb in the You know surgery cigar missed a ton of time with a broken finger Uh, and it took a while for those two guys. So it's you know, especially brice brice really struggled
Starting point is 01:04:36 After coming off the injured list Uh, but man once it's post season started, you know when You know, I always think that you know when you're when you're playing post season baseball If your best players are playing good Which the Phillies players are Uh, you know, you got a chance and you know besides the one hiccup from aeronol and game two against the Padres Aaron's been great. He exercised those september demons. Thank god And wheeler's been just unbelievable this whole post season, but you know, that's what it takes
Starting point is 01:05:09 They they they got lucky that they they have gotten to set up their rotation where wheeler nola can go games one and two and uh In the series that they've played it. So Uh, you know, and it's gonna turn out that way too in the world series So they're lucky that way to you know be able to set up their rotation coming in as the third wildcard team Yeah, I used to love watching you play back in the day. Just the the 90s Phillies teams were a lot of fun The characters on that team yourself. Lenny Dykes for a recurring guest of the show Uh, Darren Dalton Mitch wild thing. Do you see any any similarities between this Phillies team?
Starting point is 01:05:48 To the way that you guys used to play Yeah, I really do. Uh, you know, I I think You know, we didn't have the power that this team has But uh our situational hitting our basic offensive fundamentals were better than what they have On this team currently, but uh, you know, you know what I really think Turn this team around Is and you know, I say older guys. I mean Bryce just turned 30. I think real mutes just turned 30 So they're not they're not old guys
Starting point is 01:06:20 But the young guys the stats the virulings the maintenance You know, they they brought in a whole different energy for this team And I think the older guys are feeding off these young players alex balms another one that are feeding off these young kids energy and uh, it's it's a it's a wonderful thing to see because Uh, you know, these young kids at the bottom they're they're hitting in the bottom of the lineup But they're getting on base. They're producing Uh stop and and uh marsh and those guys, you know, uh, you know Most teams when you get to eight nine, okay, if we get something out of them where we feel good about it
Starting point is 01:06:59 But you know, they're bottom, you know, I mean, I mean my god, I think they're best Personal they're best overall hitter About, you know, going the other way average wise is gene sakura He it's eighth. Yeah So I mean the bottom of the lineup's done done a lot, but I really think You know, what they call the daycare the young kids I think is infusive energy in these guys And uh, you know, Dave Lombarowski said something the other day about uh, kosh warver and he said
Starting point is 01:07:28 kosh warver when he walked in that clubhouse Reminded me when he traded for darren dalton there when he was with the marlins In 97 and they ended up winning the world series. He said when darren dalton walked in that room after getting a train He said we had a leader. Yeah, and I think kosh warver has uh, and he compared kosh warver to darin And so that's that's like the hugeest compliment you can get but You know, I I you didn't see it last year You didn't see and I've told some of these guys, you know, I hated watching them the last few years I mean, you know, they pay us to watch them
Starting point is 01:08:03 But I hated watching as it was strike out or home run pop up. I mean it was boring as hell But you know, I think kevin lawn coming in They changed their offensive philosophy as far as you know, they're aggressive early. They're not taking Strike one strike two and then go into battle after getting no two because these pictures are too good now You can't just let them, you know, when you're especially, you know in this division You're facing the braves in the mess a ton like the fillies have to and even the marlins You know if you let those guys you let shers are the grom and alcantra and and uh, you know Any of the braves pitchers really you let them get strike one
Starting point is 01:08:44 You might as well walk back to dugout and put your bat away because you're just wasting your time You know, they're gonna eventually get you out and And uh, you know, I but I love what kevin long has done as far as making these guys not making but Encouraging them to be more aggressive early in the count and you see brice uh, castellanos, uh, schwerberl tag pitches, but every once in a while who jumped that first one and uh It just it just more fun baseball to watch this year than it has been any other year I've been a part of this organization. So you you bring up a couple years ago and you were very vocal I appreciate that because there's some a lot of times
Starting point is 01:09:22 Uh guys who are getting paid by the organization are not going to be as vocal or is this critical Was there ever an awkward moment where someone in the clubhouse was like, hey Croc like, you know, fuck you man. Like what's what's your deal? Or has anyone has anyone been like, hey, I remember a couple years ago or you just maybe vindicated by everything you said Well, I I will tell you this I I I've never like brice and I talk a lot and You know, I I don't think these guys I think they understand that yes, they were
Starting point is 01:09:54 Playing boring baseball and it was tough to watch the last few years I've only had one guy ever say something tell me about the some of the things I've said And I thought to myself well, that's odd. I don't remember saying anything negative about this guy or whoever after a game And uh, you know come to find out he had the wrong damn guy And uh, you know, so I'm like But no, you know what? The players know, you know, the guys that have been around rice, you know, brice jt
Starting point is 01:10:26 You know guys that have been around a while Aaron. No, exactly. They they know that That's this is the way I am and I'm you know, and You know if they don't play the game the right way then it has to be said You know, I I've commented on brice this year. He hit a ball off the wall He had to stretch it into a double bank bank play. They had a review. They they called him safe You know and I said it on the air. I said, you know, that's not winning baseball. You got to run You know, you can't assume that it's going to be a home runner. You can't assume it's going to be caught You know, if the player catches it that stops you, right?
Starting point is 01:11:01 But you run hard till he catches it and and and you know what the next day brice said, you know what you're right I I That was not the right way to prepare a right way to play the game And uh, so I you know, I think these guys get it. I I think uh Well, I'll tell you this this group right now That they have on their playoff roster These guys understand Um, and they're proving it
Starting point is 01:11:28 Uh, and look they're gonna make mistakes. They're gonna make errors. They're gonna make base training sakes every team does it But they're playing more winning baseball right now than any other time I've seen them. Yeah Yeah, um, I I want to talk about some of your career if we could for a little bit I missed the mullet. You don't have the mullet anymore. Do you? Oh man You know what? I had it going Awesome. I didn't cut my hair like I'll get the clippers and do the sides because just I hate hair on my ears And so after the season was over I come home
Starting point is 01:11:59 And uh, my daughter is a senior in high school And she had her senior night for her volleyball, right? So if I think it was on a thursday and so monday when I got home after the season was over She said you got to do me a favor and I say yeah, whatever. What do you need? She said there's no way you're walking me out on the court with that care So I had to get a haircut for her And so it's short, but man, I had one roll with man. It was it was getting there
Starting point is 01:12:31 Yeah, I mean it was long like when I took a shower, you know, you can shake your head You can feel the water going everywhere and I say yes I'm back in the 90s man, but Man, she put a she put a hop to that quick. It was a great looking mullet. It really was great mullet that that whole Everybody on that team It was kind of like a bunch of lovable dirt bags a little bit and you guys were really fun to watch and uh I I read a story earlier today about How you quit how you decided to to walk away how you retired from baseball you walked away on your own terms
Starting point is 01:13:02 But I wanted to hear you tell the story because I read like a 20 year old article and I'm not so sure that they got everything correct well You know, I I was So I told jim abbott They were talking about trading and jim was our best picture. So I told him one day on a bus. I said, hey, uh You know this after a few adult beverages And I probably shouldn't have said it, but I told him and I said, you know If they trade you that means that other guys are going to get traded
Starting point is 01:13:37 And or the white socks are going to be back to a rebuilding phase And I said if you get traded i'm going to retire because I had gone to see a doctor and I was I knew after the season I was going to have to have like my 10th knee surgery Uh, and so I went to a orthopedic Doctor in baltimore when we got there and he daily did an MRI and whatever and he said, you know, we have The one more surgery we have to do but when we do it You're done playing
Starting point is 01:14:09 well prior to that I had told jim and it was it was jim ozzie gian who I love Oh, I love all these guys kurt macias castell And scott redinsky and robin ventura So we go up to jim abbott's room when we go to I think we landed in boston and jim abbott had been We found out After we got to the hotel that jim abbott was traded So we all go up to his room, you know, we're drinking beer or whatever and and abby looks at me and he goes, hey
Starting point is 01:14:37 You're gonna hold true to to what you said. I'm like wow man. I don't who knows what the hell I said, you know, but You tell me what did I say? He said well, you said if I got traded to retire I said, yeah screw it. I'm done. I can't I couldn't hardly move anymore. I wanted to play I would love to play two or three more years But you know with my health and my knees or whatever. I just I just couldn't do it So, you know, these geniuses all decided we're going to come up with a plan a creative way for you to retire I said hey, whatever you all decide. I'm in because at this point. I don't really give a rat's ass and so
Starting point is 01:15:17 So they started talking they come up with different ideas. They said how about How about you just get a base hit you call time out and walk off the field I'm like, I see how I can do that. No big deal so we're in boston three games and I'm waiting to get a hit. They actually called up a guy to To take my place but I had to tell I had to tell the general manager Ron shure and terry bevick. There was a manager. So I had to tell them what was going on So they called up this player that was going to take my place as soon as I retired
Starting point is 01:15:53 And so we're up in boston first game over Second game over Third game over and I'm like, oh crap. So I got now I got to go to fricking baltimore And it was awful. I didn't think I'd ever get another hit the rest of my life to be honest with you So I thought, you know, I grew up not far from baltimore. I know my parents are going to be there They'll come down to watch the games with some buddies of mine And uh, you know, if I can get a hit I'll just you know, shit can't go home with them
Starting point is 01:16:27 Go back to west virginia All right, big move. So friday night or friday, I had lunch with my with my mom and dad And I said, I just want to let y'all know if I get a hit you see me walk off the field. I'm retired And my dad's like it might it is my dad. Perfect. And I guess I can I can curse, right? Yeah, shit. Fuck Okay, good So my dad looked at me and in his Beautiful wisdom that he possessed He said, well get that fucker today
Starting point is 01:16:59 Because it's supposed to be higher than shit all weekend. I ain't sitting out in the hot weight few to get a damn hit That's incredible So friday night In baltimore, I got nothing. Oh for again Well, this poor guy that they called up. I can't remember who it was now every day. That's me today. You think today's the day Yeah, I wouldn't count on it. This guy's waiting to get on put on a major league roster, right? And I like man, I wouldn't count on it today saturday it was so bad
Starting point is 01:17:31 That bevington terry bevington called me in he said he was he was I can't play you're off He said i'm giving you a day. He said you'll play this sunday though. I'm like, oh, okay, whatever We ended up pinch hitting that night Struck out that kicked out of the game. I probably would have got suspenders I told him up. I was gonna find him after the game and kill him Which I shouldn't have said I I don't even know the guy but You know that just came out so
Starting point is 01:18:01 I dug jones was the closure for the oryx and dug was with the fillies the year before with us And so I see dug and we're talking and and dug's like so how you been I said dug you've seen me the last two nights And I said matter of fact, you struck me out. I don't think I swung I said when's the last time you've ever seen that And he said yeah, he said said yeah bar sky report said you're struggling a little bit. We're gonna challenge you I said challenge me as they all you got to do is put it on a tee and I'll make it out So I asked him I said I said who's pitching sunday
Starting point is 01:18:32 And he said scott erickson. I said he's a good guy. He said oh, yeah, he's a really good guy I said, will you do me a favor? I said We stuck I can't get ahead. I I don't want to go back to chicago. I want to go home. He goes the hell you talking about it I said well if I can get another hit I'm retired He said all right. He said I said so I said, can you tell scott erickson to throw me just a nothing BP fastball right down the middle So I can try to get this hit and get the hell out of here
Starting point is 01:19:01 and uh And so he said I tell you what he said I'll talk to him I'll talk to him tomorrow before the game and when you're coming up the bed looking the dug out and if I'm tipping my hat He said that means he's in he's on board I'm like, oh man. Thank god Man, I'm in the on deck circle. I don't see duck jones anywhere in the dug out and I'm like, oh god. I'm on my own and So I'm walking off and I'm like probably five feet from the batter's box
Starting point is 01:19:32 And I see the jonesy come flying down Right, you know tipping his hat like that I'm like, oh, thank god And he did he threw me a BP fastball. I got the dog crap jammed out of me and hit a little blooper over cow's head for for a base hit
Starting point is 01:19:52 So I'm on first base now The only people that know this that I'm that I'm retiring and walking off the field was of course the guys in the room Ozzy Kurt scott redinsky and those guys and abby of course and uh, and uh, so Um The first base coach ron papa jack ron jackson You know
Starting point is 01:20:14 And rafael plamero was playing first Frank start frank thomas starts coming out of the third base dugout. Frank's gonna run for me now First time in the history of baseball frank thomas has ever pinched right now somewhere. Yeah, and I thought why can't be this first one So, you know rafi and and papa jacker asked me they said they split the hell's going on. I said, oh, i'm done. I'm retired And rafi goes, maybe goes you're hitting 320. Why don't I say yeah, but it's a weak ass 320 and I can't I said it's it's gotten to the point rafi where when I get on base I pray someone doesn't hit one in the gap So I have to run because I couldn't hardly run anymore. I couldn't already move
Starting point is 01:20:53 And I said I I can't keep rooting against my teammates But I said Four or five of them came up with a damn idea to get a hit walk off So frank now is doing the stutter step because he sees me talking to these guys and he's taking a step out Taking a step back take I mean he looked he looked like a you know someone that does that recording of someone Taking a step moving back taking a step moving back. I mean he looked like a cartoon kind of thing So I forget who was hitting after me that they swung at the first pitch and got a base hit the left field And so now i'm like crap now i'm on second
Starting point is 01:21:25 And I said well, you know what what the hell i'll talk to cow You know wishing luck on the streak and all that stuff and you know, it's a pleasure playing against you know So cow and our bs and next guy flies out. I go run say goodbye to cow I run The third right in the dugout right up in the clubhouse Ozzie again is in there waiting for me with the bottle of champagne because Ozzie and I came up through the pod dear organization. I've known Ozzie since he was 16 Uh, I know his whole family. They call me uncle. I mean it's it's Ozzie and I are so close. It's scary
Starting point is 01:22:01 And so Ozzie had a bottle of champagne. I had a note for the media To for Ozzie to give to the media after the game And so uh, you know, we toasted, you know, and everyone says oh, you knew you needed one hit to hit 300 I was hoping to get that damn hit Boston and hit 301. Who gives a crap? Yeah, what's the difference at that point? You know if I if protecting a 300 batting average was my goal out of retired in Boston. Yeah Yeah, I went over whatever up there. Yep And so I drove home because I grew up two hours two and a half hours from Baltimore
Starting point is 01:22:35 So I drove home. I go to my house. I turn on TV and I'm watching the rest of the game and our announcers are like, yeah, we don't know what happened We know he was limping, but we haven't got a report yet, but we think it's a hamstring No, it's a career. Yeah Yeah, I said no, it was it was more than a hamstring. It's an entire body saying screw it. I'm done So I get about two weeks after all this I get a phone call from my agent and he says hey, he goes I was away on vacation He said I've just checked all the box scores. He said are you hurt?
Starting point is 01:23:09 Are you on the disable list at the time? And I said no, why he said well, how come you ain't been playing and I said, oh crap I forgot to tell you I'm retired And he goes he goes, well, isn't that something you should have ran past me? I said you weren't going to change my mind Yeah, that's just the way it was Uh, but you know, my dad was happy because I got to hit my first impact. It was it was like 100 degrees in Baltimore And he was so happy like he goes he goes, man, I didn't want to sit there and sweat my ass off I need to get the fuck home. Yeah
Starting point is 01:23:43 I like so did I What a story. That's incredible. Yeah, I mean, that's Here's the thing. I never thought of here's the thing. I never thought thought of with all these great plans No one came up with the thought How the hell am I going to get all my shit back from Chicago? Yeah Yeah So My dad's like I asked him I said I said I got to go out to Chicago. He said what the hell I'll go with you
Starting point is 01:24:06 So me and him a couple of my buddies drove out to Chicago like a couple days later went to my Apartment of condo. I had rented got all my stuff. I actually had a car of my car there too. No, I was using Ozzy's car Ozzy gave me a truck to use Purple with pink running light run lights on the running board. I'm like this salsa music. I didn't know how to turn off the freaking radio Oh, man, I'm driving through Chicago and that thing man. If people probably look at me like what the hell's wrong with this crazy? That's incredible. That's fantastic It sounds like you knew you wanted to walk away and and you picked your time and you went out on your own terms
Starting point is 01:24:42 Did you ever regret? Did you ever later on that season you wake up one day knees feeling all right? And you're like, you know, I could I could still get out there No, you know what I I actually after I got back from Chicago retrieving all my stuff Uh, I went back to Baltimore to get that Surgery and the doctor said look here's the thing once I do it You're done playing you can't run anymore. And I said sure I couldn't run anyway. What the hell's the difference now? He said no, he said you're done And he said so you got to make decisions. Do you want to get this surgery?
Starting point is 01:25:15 Knowing that your career's over or if you're thinking about coming back. I said doc you can do that some bitch today Yeah Because I am done playing and I you know what I the only thing I look back on in regret is I wish I would have taken better care of myself after surgery. I wish I had done all the rehab I was supposed to do But I just wanted to play like I had one knee surgery and you know once I came off the 15 day disabled list I was in the lineup Yeah, like 10 10 days there 12 days in I was in triple a rehab playing on turf
Starting point is 01:25:51 Dumbest damn thing I've ever done because my knee never got better. It just kept getting worse after that But I just wanted to play I I didn't want to sit there and have some trainer tell me You know you got to do 15 of these quad strengthening crap and You know, I just wanted to go do my normal stupid stretch and you know play Yeah, I love it. I love it. And I mean that's why I think a lot of fans loved you so much because you you seem like The common man out there We're going to get back to our interview with John Cruck in a second But now a word from our sponsor better help more athletes are speaking out about the importance of mental health

That's b e t t e r h e l p dot com Slash pmt And get 10 off your first month today with better help and now here's more John Cruck I had one other question about your career and Um, you know, you had a fantastic career But you had one year that things didn't go so well
Starting point is 01:27:30 And I think you have the greatest excuse of all time Your roommates were bank robbers, correct? Is that how it went? And then you Essentially the fbi approached you was like, hey, do you know these guys? You're like, yeah, those are my roommates and you spent the entire year Worrying that your former roommates were going to come find you Yeah, I was staying at a different hotel every night Uh, I stayed with randy ready some because randy and I you know are like brothers So, you know, he he was the only one on the team that I told now. I was really close with tony guin
Starting point is 01:28:05 Uh But I didn't want to tell tony or anyone else. I just kept it to myself But it was it was scary, you know You know the fbi first of all these guys in suits come in the locker room I'm getting ready to go out for batting practice And he's these guys are like, hey, we need to talk to you. I said, yeah, sit down. I said, I got a couple minutes I got off for batting practice. He said, no, you don't I'm like, what the frick is going on He said we got to go in this other room. I'm like, I ain't going to no other room
Starting point is 01:28:35 I said, this is where I talked to everyone. They said no, this is this is nothing to do with baseball We're going to another room now. I'm like, okay Crap, you know, I I pension for drinking beer after games. I wonder if I did anything really stupid And I'm you know, don't say show me their badge. I'm like, oh my god, and I'm thinking myself. What the hell did I do? Right? Uh You know Because I've done some stupid things. I didn't think it was fbi worthy, but you know, who knows So, you know, they told they showed me pictures of one of the guys, you know, surveillance or not, you know
Starting point is 01:29:10 Hidden camera bank surveillance pictures, you know And at first I said, no, I don't know this dude And the guy goes take a look again and I'm like, okay, these guys are serious. They're not playing with they're not They're not taking my game serious and so I looked at the picture and But and I love this guy, but he had a hat on it said uh
Starting point is 01:29:35 American by birth west virginian by the grace of god And he wore it all the time. I was like, oh crap I'm like, man, I can't I can't even I can't even hide this one So I said, yes, I do know who that is. He said, well, his girlfriend is ex-wife. They've all identified it I'm like good. So I'm not the one That you know ratted them out or whatever Well, apparently someone told him That I was the one who called the fbi. I was the one who turned them in
Starting point is 01:30:06 And so the guys from the fbi are you know, they're calling me all the time. Did you see him or you know, when you're on the road? Call me call us if you see him because you know, we have Some informants or some people they're telling us that he's looking for you and whatever. Well, apparently apparently they They caught the one Roy lee plumber um Like a mile from my house in san diego and I was told and I of course I never talked to him about it. I did talk to him after he was
Starting point is 01:30:39 Uh, you know went to trial whatever was incarcerated. He called me one night or one afternoon and we talked for a long time And it was good to talk to him to get everything cleared up but um Yeah, he he he did you know I was told that He told someone his girlfriend ex-wife or whatever that After he was told that I was the one who Turned him in that he was gonna come out and kill him. Geez
Starting point is 01:31:10 And so apparently I got a call from the fbi one day and he said hey, we got him. I said, oh good I said I said where was he because like i'm i'm i'm i'm calling the fbi almost every day having to tell them if i've seen him if i've heard from him whatever and uh, so uh, I said where'd you get him said a mile from your house and he had A rifle and a couple pistols in his car and I knew he carried because My god, I've known him my whole life. Oh, he's a bank robber too. So yeah, yeah, of course he did Yeah, uh, but you know, he was such an upstanding citizen back where we grew up You know, he's sunday school teacher. He had his own insurance company a business
Starting point is 01:31:51 You know, he you know, he did a bunch of stuff for people. I mean he was just he just lost it You know, and that's what drugs do to you. I guess I mean he got hooked on drugs And he was going to do anything he can to get drugs which meant robin banks uh, but uh Yeah, so the guy said he caught him like a mile from my house and like I said after he was incarcerated I think he was in kentucky 16 years Uh, but then he got out Uh, you know the weird part he got out
Starting point is 01:32:22 And my nephew called me lived in fairmont west virginia And he said uh, hey because you never can believe who I met at the bank today I said I said, oh no way He said he said I met roy lee plumber's wife And I'm like, where'd you meet her? He said She's the bank manager at the bank. I bank at here in here in fairmont. Well apparently met this woman. He married her and Again, he was fine for years
Starting point is 01:32:52 Got off drugs, whatever, you know when he was in prison. He got to rehab and Whatever and you know, he was working on his sister's farm taking care of his sister's farm for him for her and her husband And uh, you know, I really thought he turned his life around And uh, then he just he lost it again And uh, I remember I was driving down the fantasy camp. My mom called me And uh, and she said, uh, hey roy roy plumber's dad. I said, what do you mean? He's dead? They said well, apparently he robbed a bank cops chased him like they had him. He was on a train trestle tracks, you know
Starting point is 01:33:34 on a like a little bridge Police on both sides. He had nowhere to go and he just killed himself. So Yeah, you know, it was I You know It was sad But you know, he can't hurt anyone right like he apparently threatened to kill his ex-wife and her kids and Kidnap him and I mean it was just he just went off the deep end again with the drugs and everything and that just
Starting point is 01:34:00 You know, I I I felt for him, but then you know deep down You're kind of happy that he can't hurt anyone. Yeah, and you and you had a whole season of living with It's a crazy story. It's a crazy crazy story You know, you know 2031 ground out to second didn't bother me and that's what I knew There was other things on my mind because normally that's a go up in the tunnel You know, break your helmet break your bat type thing Right, and then Gary then Gary Templeton. Look now you go man fat boy
Starting point is 01:34:37 Why don't you just admit the fact that you can't hit? Oh God Man, we got to have you in studio at some point or do this in person because there's a million Where are you at? We're in New York City. Yeah Well, I I I think I get to travel next year to do games So yeah, yeah, you got to you got to stop because there's a million other things I want to ask you about the the one last thing I'll ask about right now though is um, Mitch Williams wild thing
Starting point is 01:35:02 Um, one of the iconic pictures of the early 90s Uh, Philly's legend He saved your life in a way, didn't he? Well, he thinks he did Uh, you know, I would I would have preferred to find out a different way than getting hit in the nuts by by 90-something skipping off the wet grass in Los Angeles Uh, but I would have preferred he threw it through a chest type to me. Yeah You know, that would have been better than then, you know
Starting point is 01:35:32 Trying to block it and taking one off the goobs, man. Uh, it broke my cup And, uh, you know, it was Quite large My right testicle was Was really large at the time Uh hurt like hell too And but I I was afraid to go to a doctor because, uh
Starting point is 01:35:56 You know, I didn't know I didn't want them to tell me something bad So I ignored Uh, I tried to ignore it all winter too. Like like now. I'm in the winter west Virginia. It's colder in hell and I'm wearing Shorts with no under I could wear underwear I mean, it hurts so damn bad to do anything like this to the bend over To do anything it hurt like hell and really got uh, like Like I would throw up at times because this it would hurt my stomach so bad So I go to spring training. I'm thinking all right. I'm just gonna ignore this pain
Starting point is 01:36:29 And fight through it. Well, you know, you're wearing a cup You're taking grounders every day I mean that it was Frickin brutal the pain. So finally they said look, we're gonna send you so I go to a hospital and In clear water Tampa wherever And they did an ultrasound. They did something else Hematoma just the hematoma. We're you know, nothing you can't do nothing
Starting point is 01:36:57 All right, all right, whatever. So keep taking anti-inflammatories. I'm like, oh, yeah, these things help me But so I go back to spring training the next day same thing Fielding grounders upset stomach. I go in the dugout throw up um and so Bill Giles the owner
Starting point is 01:37:18 Lee Thomas general madrid and said bill Bill Giles was the one he said listen He said work work. We're gonna fly you up to Philly You're gonna go to Jefferson hospital and you're gonna go to the best Whatever narrow urologist In the city And we got an appointment and you're gonna go there and get checked because we can't can you can't continue going through like this I said, all right, so I fly to Philly. I go to this doctor and doctor ran all these tests again Probably afternoon early afternoon
Starting point is 01:37:50 and he said He said uh, hey He said all it is the hematoma. He said you have nothing going on He said just keep taking anti-inflammatory like man And I think I'm puking because the damn anti-inflammatories having to take, you know, one or two every damn day You know those things aren't conducive to having a good stomach So I said listen, I said I want you to do the surgery and remove my right testicle He said there ain't no way I'm doing that
Starting point is 01:38:19 And I said I said, uh, well, I said listen. I said we're the defending nationally champions I said I said I need to play So I need you to take this out because I can't play like this And he said I tell you what he said go for a walk. Go have lunch or something go for a walk And if you feel this strongly Then I'll do it I walked out the hallway walked down the hall you turn back and said doc let's fucking go Jesus
Starting point is 01:38:49 All right, well, here's a here's a This is this is when you know, you've lived a really screwed up life So I get the surgery right I'm in the hospital next day You know next morning. Well that night a young guy came in a young doctor came in and he said uh, oh surgery went well Everything's fine. I said, so I'm good. He goes. Yeah. Yes, surgery went good. Everything's good All right, good. I'm think all right. Maybe it was just a hematoma thing And uh, but then I asked I said did they put like a prosthetic in like a marvel or something?
Starting point is 01:39:23 So my weight just distributions. Okay, and they said no, we don't do that. I'm like, oh shit I'll just be lopsided for a while Do I figure this out? so The next morning the nurse comes in and she starts to wheel me out of the room and I'm like, uh Excuse me. Where are we going? I she said, oh, we got to do a lymph angiogram to see if the cancer spread I'm like, what? They say yeah, we got to see if the cancer spread
Starting point is 01:39:49 I said, now what cancer would that be? He said, well, you have to stick your cancer The when we ran a test on your testicle You had you have cancer Geez, I'm like, holy shit So, you know, and I said, why didn't that doctor last night tell me? He said, oh my god. He said he's young He's a big filly span and he was he was afraid to tell you Oh I'm like, what the hell was I gonna do jump up and punch him? Yeah
Starting point is 01:40:19 Like it's your fault that I have cancer. I mean, come on So anyway, so what they do they cut the top of your feet. They pull up a blood vessel And they shoot die in the blood vessel it goes up through your body to see if the cancer spread So now both my feet are cut open I had a pair of running shoes I had to cut the tongue out just so I could wear shoes Because like the hotel that the fillies put me up and was only like a couple blocks from the out from the hospital So I would walk and uh
Starting point is 01:40:49 To the hospital get my treatments five days a week and and walk back to the hospital if you walk back to the hotel You know throw up and all that crap and basically lay down and sleep the rest of the day and uh the first night After I got back to the hotel after they did this lymph angiogram They cut both feet. Oh, I mean they cut them open from one side to the other So there's you know, it's probably
Starting point is 01:41:14 Well, I'm trying to look at it now. It's probably like a four or five inch scar on my foot The first night I'm in the hotel now Bill Jiles. I love Bill Jiles Bill put me up in the suite up in the top floor beautiful suite and you know, I was there for 30 damn days I got a costume of fortune, but I was very appreciative And uh, like I need a suite All I did was watch tv Lay in the bed and go puke. So I had everything I needed in a regular room But the suite I guess let's make a little further walk to the bathroom, but I was appreciative anyway
Starting point is 01:41:48 First damn night fire kitchen fire I had to walk all the way down those steps After just getting my feet cut open I look I looked down at my feet and I told you I cut the tongues out of my shoes I didn't have socks on And I was looking down and both feet are covered in both shoes are covered in blood Ripped open the stitches, you know walking down the step So I'm like, well, I don't know how long I'm gonna be here, but I just I walked back to the hospital
Starting point is 01:42:18 Walked in the emergency room. Luckily someone recognized me doctor with the nurse the emergency room And he said what's going on. I said I think I need To get the restitched and it looked down. They're like, oh my god They say, yeah, we we got to do it. So then luckily they restitched them and Everything was fine after that. But uh, yeah, it was good. It's a bit crazy, man I mean, you have you had the right. Yeah, well not not You had you had the right thought which was like your body was telling you something's wrong And even though the doctors are saying like hey, it looks like it might just be a bruise
Starting point is 01:42:53 You were like, I I will literally give my right nut to play baseball. Yeah Well, yeah, I yeah I Yeah, you know, yeah, you're you're trying to like make it sound like maybe not but yes That's what you said. You're like withers defending in our champions. Yeah, yeah Yeah, I mean, there there was no way I could have played that way. There's no way And I knew it wasn't going to get better The problem was is because I waited because doctors told me it was just a hematoma and I waited
Starting point is 01:43:22 You know after they did that lymph angiogram. I did have swelling in my or spreading cancer spreading in my stomach So I had to do instead of 20 radiation treatments. They had to do 25 and uh You know, so so that that that was because I waited but You know, I I I I missed the first six games because the team was on the road. I had to stay and get treatments and um, you know, I remember the home opener We got our nationally championship rings And they weren't gonna let me play games at like one, I think
Starting point is 01:43:57 and Like at 12 11 45 12 o'clock. They still aren't gonna let me play So I had my cancer doctor call Jim Fragosi and lee thomas in Jim Fragosi's office and say look he can't get hurt if he feels like he can play he can play So they looked at me and they said, what do you think? I said, I already told you man I want to play. I said, you know, we didn't have a great road trip. I had to watch you damn games on tv I want to play and try to make a difference
Starting point is 01:44:28 They're like, all right screw it. You're gonna play. I'm like, oh Probably the dumbest decision I've ever made my life because I felt after like the first two or three games I felt like death because I was getting radiation treatments in the morning and going to ballpark and playing That's crazy. It was stupid. Yeah, you know, people say what what were you thinking? I said, well, I wasn't um You know, it's it's not a strong suit of mine putting a you know putting the brain to use uh But it was the dumbest thing I've ever done
Starting point is 01:44:59 Uh trying to play while getting radiation. I should have waited another couple weeks and come back healthier and stronger and uh, you know Probably been a Bigger help to the team than playing like the way I was trying to play feeling like I was feeling Well, again, that's why you're probably a fan favorite because uh of all these stories and and legendary career and look and And uh, congrats again to your Phillies for being in the world series. Everyone check out crucky. He's on mbc sports, philadelphia I agree with pft. We have to do an extended interview with you in person
Starting point is 01:45:36 Sometime we'll have you on we could do two hours three hours. You just telling us stories. Yeah I'm in okay. Well, uh, yeah Yeah, so next year. I don't even know the schedule of philly, but they come to new york. I've come new york beautiful sounds great Uh Yeah, we'll we'll do it and you just name the day And we'll set you up in the middle. Yeah, you could sit you could sit on the bench press. You have to bench for us No, I can't lift weight I I used to go do the skeet shooting thing every year with tim mcgroth for uh, uh, uh, the tug mcgroth foundation
Starting point is 01:46:10 We used to go to nashville and do a skeet shooting. I shot the shotgun once now. I've had this Shoulder reconstructed three damn time. It's not even my throwing shoulder But it's from diving on the turf, you know for ground balls and you know fly balls at the vet. Yeah He didn't ruin my shoulder I tried to shoot. Oh my god the pain So I said screw it. So me and this me and my my uh, nashville Well, he lives in new york, but he does security for for uh, tim
Starting point is 01:46:41 and uh, so he's Everyone in the tug mcgroth foundation now caused him my new york wife Because we just hang out the whole time we drive around in a golf cart and And mess with everyone funny story real quick. Joe montana shoot one year And you know, you know, Joe montana is a perfectionist So when he knew he was going to do that he built a skeet shooting thing on his property out in california To practice so he wouldn't embarrass himself So we stopped and watching shoot
Starting point is 01:47:12 You know pull god killed cool killed it killed again Four out of five the fifth one. He yelled pull He had to miss that thing by a damn bottle So after he'd done him like damn joe, I said I'm first before you were locked in I said what happened on the fifth one He said john he said he goes i've had so many damn concussions and so much Brain trauma. He said that now I have issues with my eyes He said and every once in a while he said and so if i'm looking straight to where the the skeet is You know the the the the the the clay
Starting point is 01:47:47 The clay pigeon he said if i'm looking straight at that he said sometimes my eyes will just dart to the right And he said that's what happened on that last one. He said I shot where my eyes were looking I said thank god no one was standing yeah But he said he's every once in a while because of the nerve damage in his in his eyes He said that my eye will just shoot to the right and he said that's what I see I'm like, oh dear god and you got a shotgun in your hand. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good point. Um, all right Well, crocky, thank you so so much. We really really really appreciate it
Starting point is 01:48:19 Um, we're big fans of yours and uh, yeah, let's do it in person and and best of luck for the world series I think most of america's rooting for the fillies. Starting point is 01:49:31 Okay, we now welcome on our good friend colleague Former filly. Well, I just want to say that on your wikipedia page your picture is you and a filly's uniform So maybe you are remembered as a filly. I don't know if somebody because can't you alter and edit anybody's wikipedia page? No, it's like, oh, I thought it was like a free for all. Yeah, mine says uh, mine says i'm five foot three right now So yeah, that's definitely fake news. That's off So it is jk arietta He's our good friend, uh, colleague. Like I said go download starting nine our our baseball podcast on barstool sports filly alum filly's alum getting ready for the world series. I don't know where we want to start actually, you know what?
Starting point is 01:50:16 Are you still talking with some of the guys on the team on the filly's team? And what is the vibe that you've picked up off of what they've been able to accomplish this october? Man, I think it starts with well, let's go back to like june july, you know when when they were struggling the third place um in the inno east It looks like You know, the Mets are going to run away with the division Atlanta starts to creep in nobody's even really talking about the filly's harper breaks his thumb
Starting point is 01:50:46 He's out for a number of weeks and it just kind of seems like they're gonna End up finishing third not making it in the postseason and then The trade deadline they bring in brand of marsh know a center guard um And it it looks like pieces that aren't very sexy pieces But it's starting to get the job done and they start playing great baseball And the next thing you know, they find themselves in the wild card spot against the st. Louis Cardinals And everybody, you know thought they might go in there and be competitive
Starting point is 01:51:18 But ultimately, you know, we had smithy on one of our live streams and you know game one wasn't going very well for him Looked like they're probably going to lose that game But they find a way to battle back with with helsley on the mound And they beat them they beat them You know two games of nothing and their confidence in the momentum just keeps building and moving forward And then they go into the next series against atlanta And just and just play extremely well and for whatever reason
Starting point is 01:51:48 And there's a number of reasons, you know, you have rob thompson who took over as a manager He's he's now going to be their guy for at least a couple of years. Hopefully more um Everybody's rallied around him And their star players are performing just at at an extremely high level and I think that That's what's going to have to continue for them to have any shot against the houston ash shows Um because of just how how good they are. I mean, they're unbeaten in the postseason. Yeah We know how good they are
Starting point is 01:52:19 So, I mean, it's going to take the best effort from everybody in that lineup and on the pitching staff And really even to have have have a chance to beat the astros. It's it's crazy. You mentioned by the way I like totally because it's you know, october there's so many sports on so everything becomes a blur But yeah, without that cardinals meltdown in that first game like The fillies could have been out. You know what I mean? Like that game. Yeah, if the cardinals just don't Absolutely piss down their leg and they win that first game We could be talking about a completely different team in in the world series here and that's kind of That's credit to the fillies for like always hanging in there and always sticking around where they pounce on these opportunities that other teams
Starting point is 01:52:59 Haven't been able to you're exactly right and I think that's what what has kind of propelled them Uh into the position they're in to even have this opportunity Like you said, they very well could have could have lost that game And you kind of expected a team like the cardinals, especially at home to kind of shut that shit down and and kind of roll into game two and Probably finish off the series But it didn't go that way and it's just continued to like move in a positive direction and everything Uh, not that it's luck, but it seems like everything
Starting point is 01:53:33 That can go right has gone right for the fillies and you got to give a lot of credit To them in that Padres series and even the brave series They were they were at a deficit, you know many times throughout that series And I think that both of the series appeared to be way more competitive Um And and balanced than they really were. I mean they they won both both series pretty handily But that Padres series was back and forth. I mean lead changes left and right
Starting point is 01:54:02 But they didn't uh, they never got down on themselves and their their star players continue to step up I mean Hoskins with home runs Obviously schwarber I mean harper the biggest at bat of his entire career I mean he comes through in a way that I mean you you can't even can't even Script something like that, but You just had a feeling like this guy's gonna come through in this moment. I mean jt gets the big hit to start off the inning They don't bring in josh hater to face harper, which I think was a huge mistake
Starting point is 01:54:35 Even though Suarez had pitched extremely well It's like you have you have the best left-handed guy Ready in the bullpen and he's he's on fire. He's pitched extremely well in the postseason And you don't bring him into face harper. Yeah, right. So I mean, you know, fortunately They didn't for for the Phillies and it worked out, but that at bat if you just go through it, um I think there was some things that I mean it started out pretty well. You got a fastball down away He's he's he swings and misses fastball up and in a great move there fastball away For a swing fastball up
Starting point is 01:55:10 Uh fouls it off fastball down away. He fouls it off Then they threw one change up that he that he took extremely well And then he goes back to the heater But but again, I mean he could he could have popped up he could have struck out Uh, I just think that san diego didn't necessarily handle that situation the way they should have Yeah, the the six out save is always something that you hear about more often in the playoffs So from a pitchers perspective, uh, what's what is the actual tangible difference? Uh, as as you're coming in for you know, six outs instead of three
Starting point is 01:55:43 And it doesn't seem like that much more, right Maybe, you know, maybe like five extra pitches per bat Maybe 15 to 20 extra pitches that you have to throw But from a closer perspective like what happens to your stuff at that point Well, I think in that moment when you're In game five of the nlcs I don't think anything happens to the stuff in that moment And if you look at the way that we used uh, all this Chapman in 2016 when when we traded for him
Starting point is 01:56:10 I mean we we threw him multiple innings many times and because we had to we needed to And if there's ever a situation to do it even though josh hater isn't Accustomed to getting six outs. I mean he's pitched He's pitched one plus before so Like I said like you you win or you go home. So if there's ever a situation to To do it. I mean that's that's the one you know what I mean What about as like a starter when it's the all I love when it's all hands on deck when it's like hey every arm Um, you've been in those situations where they tell you beforehand
Starting point is 01:56:49 And do you like how do you change up your entire routine? Because that's such a foreign thing for a starter to go into a high leverage playoff game It is you know, I threw game Six of the world series in 16 And I don't remember how many pitches I threw probably around a hundred and I had a conversation with joe and said I'll I'll be in the bullpen for game seven Um, and I actually got warmed up at a point late in the game And you just you kind of know what bullpen guys do
Starting point is 01:57:19 Uh, and you and you have an idea of how to handle it. The most important thing is just Not being accustomed to getting your body ready that quickly So what what do you do every couple of innings you get up you stretch you stretch out a little bit Maybe hop on the bike you you toss around a weighted ball you do some bands So it's not yeah, it might be foreign in a sense because you're not accustomed to doing it Um, you know on a daily basis like the bullpen guys are but we we know how to do it Yeah, you know, I think you have you have an idea of what that routine looks like So you just you just fucking do it because that's that's that's the only option
Starting point is 01:57:55 I like that. How sour is your arm on zero days rest? Yeah It depends on the stress how stressful the pitches are like number one, you know, like if you go out there and you cruise through seven innings You maybe you maybe scatter a couple hits But there's really there's really at no point in the game are there guys multiple guys in scoring position The bases are clogged where you have to like really bear down in the the effort level Um Is is much higher because if you're cruising man You could you could come to the ballpark the next day and and feel like you could pitch again
Starting point is 01:58:29 And then on the flip side of that you can come to the ballpark and feel like you got hit by a truck. So It's it's all different But at that point in the season at this point in the year everybody's banged up. Nobody feels great You're kind of running on fumes and a drilling Uh and caffeine so You just and you have to you have to understand yourself and like if if I was in a position where I I didn't feel like I could help the team and and put myself in a position where
Starting point is 01:58:57 I wasn't better than the next guy. I would have said look joe like I'm I don't I don't I'm I'm probably not a good option for us tonight, but you know I was able to get myself In a position energy wise and a drilling where it didn't really matter how I felt like I was going to be capable If I was needed what about uh, so let's talk about the astros like you said they they are undefeated in the post season It's crazy how embarrassing Are yeah embarrassing. They've made the Yankees like feel and look because they've just every time they match up in the playoffs The Yankees look like absolutely nothing compared to them. Well, they open the roof. Yeah, they open the roof
Starting point is 01:59:35 Put an asterisk on what about if you're a pitcher how dare them Yeah, how dare them if you're a pitcher on the Philly staff and you're going up against this lineup What is What's the reason why the astros like what part of that lineup or or what combo is it that makes it so difficult to pitch around? There's really no breaks in the lineup and this is no disrespect to maldonado, but he Might be the only guy who you can get away with multiple multiple mistakes and he was uh, you know, the reason they drove in the first run in one of those games, you know chas McCormick, you know got on base who's another guy who's
Starting point is 02:00:15 Elevating his game in the post season and shocker. That's just what the astros Are notorious for is finding these guys like Jeremy Pena Who's from Rhode Island a third rounder that nobody even really knew about now He's one of the the superstars of the post season turning himself into Um, I don't know if we can technically call him a star yet But it just it looks like it's going in that direction if you can perform at this level Uh, this consistently and when games mean this much I mean
Starting point is 02:00:46 There's a 99.9 percent chance. This dude is going to be absolutely legit. So Yeah I mean, you know in Cortez was was He's trained his groin to a certain extent in that game Um, but that three run homer. That's just an absolute dagger for for the Yankees and to do that on the road As a rookie and time and time again He hit the solo homer against the Mariners in that 18 inning game, which won on the ball game So it's not just like a single here and there where he's getting on base for like the boppers
Starting point is 02:01:19 You know like tucker or alvarez or bregman like he's doing damage. So Um, you combine that, you know chaz and you combine panya With with those huge guys in their order like bregman and alvarez and i'll too. They look at look how cold You know so to speak i'll too. They spent and to have a guy like that who's You know One of your best players over the last six or seven years I mean It doesn't even matter because they have so many other guys who are producing. So the fillies
Starting point is 02:01:52 The pitching depth and experience is the astros advantage in this series but it almost evens itself out with You know the fillies being in a position where they have nothing to lose they've gotten this far and they've continued to produce and I mean, I can't imagine how electric that clubhouse is and just like the vibes amongst the dudes With what they've been able to accomplish So, I mean you can't you can't count them out. I mean, they're nine and two in the postseason
Starting point is 02:02:19 Which is which is extremely impressive. They're hitting a ton of home runs You know schwarber and harper. I believe we're hitting 400 in that series You know, huskens had multiple home runs j t's on base You know a lot sagura is having Incredible abats alex bowms is swinging the bat very well. I mean just up and down the lineup brison stop So the supporting cast, you know on both sides is is a big reason why these teams are both in the position Yeah, the the fillies you can look at them and be like this is a scrappy team I like watching them play for each other
Starting point is 02:02:52 But they also have stars like they're made up of some really really good like brand name household name baseball players, but they seem to be I don't know if I just haven't watched as much of the astros as I have About like watching the fillies this postseason, but the fillies they seem to have like a little bit of shit to them You know that like they're playing as a team and I was talking to max before we started recording this but with um With with baseball, it's inherently an individual sport Most of the things that you do at any given time with the exception of defense occasionally And you know some hit-and-run stuff, but most of it is just one guy versus one guy
Starting point is 02:03:27 Um, but with the fillies it seems like there might be some team cohesion That's that's kind of making the sum of their parts greater than the individuals What does that look like when a team? Has like has gelled and they're close on the field They're close off the field and what actual differences can you see and how they play During an actual game if they're close knit. Yeah, it's a good question, man And I think that this is um, this is something Thompson has alluded to the players have alluded to
Starting point is 02:03:55 um Throughout the course of of the postseason Their ability to bounce back and be resilient That's the term that they've all been using and that's very true You have to be resilient resilient in these these types of games because you're not always going to Um, you're not going to always score first and maintain the lead throughout the entire game There's going to be a lot of lead changes, but I think and you can't there's no stat for this It's it's hard to quantify
Starting point is 02:04:22 But the relationships that are developed amongst the players on a personal level getting to know and it sounds cliche But getting to know your teammates away from the field their families their kids You pull for each other much harder When you care about each other In that kind of way So and I know these guys are extremely close And I think that's just what it is
Starting point is 02:04:45 You you want to if a guy punches out with two outs to the guy in scoring position That next guy so desperately wants to drive that run in or he wants to put together a great abat or if the starter doesn't You don't necessarily have the outing he wanted to have you know A guy comes out of the pen and gives the team three or four innings to bridge the gap Keep the team in the game and hand the ball to somebody at the back of the bullpen Um, and I think that's what we're seeing here, man. I really do. I was a part of that On multiple teams with the Cubs and this team looks no different. Yeah, so, um, one thing we always talk about with like in football
Starting point is 02:05:21 Guys get to the Super Bowl Super Bowl is faster than any game. That's what everyone says, you know that first You know, whatever first quarter and then the halftime everything's off Is there a difference between the DS Cs and then getting to the world series. Is there a Vibe change in the clubhouse? Like what does that step up look like and and what maybe from experience like or a story about How it felt walking into that game one of the world series
Starting point is 02:05:50 Well, I don't necessarily think the pace of this game Uh Is gonna be sped up for these guys on either side, especially the astros. Yeah, they've been there six six division titles In a row six ALCS Appearances in a row four world series or two world series in last years Like it doesn't even really make sense that they've been able to do what they've been able to do. But I think for the Phillies playing postseason games and citizens bank park
Starting point is 02:06:19 For the first time since, you know, 2011 Maybe 2012 like that crowd Has already been as electric probably as they can possibly be So they they know what that sensation is like. They know what it feels like and I don't you know Minute maid isn't going to be any louder than Philly. So they've they've already experienced What that noise level is is going to look like. So I think they're in In a very good position to be able to handle that but there is a slight slight shift in what the game feels like from, you know, wildcard ds cs world series
Starting point is 02:06:55 um And I think that, you know, they just They need to respond and strike first if they can strike first like they were able to do The first game in Philly against uh against the Padres, you know, Schwab would let off the game with the home run like Not saying that that has to happen But if you can strike first against a team like the astros That's just like dude that like that's something that just gives you Like that added energy like, you know, we we can beat these guys. We can beat these guys
Starting point is 02:07:25 But if you're playing from behind Early and often it gets a team like the astros Um, I mean, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out But I think that that's where the astros really like Kind of put a clamp on this series and gain control Right, they get if they get dominant starting pitching Um, and they and they score first. I mean, it's it's going to be a really difficult series for Um, you know for the Phillies, but if if you can get I think Aaron null is probably going to start game one
Starting point is 02:07:54 He'd be on eight days rest and You know, you probably don't want him to go much further than than eight days I mean, he's been probably throwing a sim game here and there in bullpens But I like Aaron null a game one wheeler two ranger swaras Three and if those guys Give you depth and you don't have to get to guys like Conor Brogdon or Bellotti or Falter Uh in the middle innings Then the then the Phillies really have a shot, but they're gonna have to get length from their starters
Starting point is 02:08:21 Yeah, we're about from a pitchers perspective if you're in the middle of a game and especially during a world series game A real like, you know, this is the kind of stuff that you dream of playing in when you're a kid And you can tell like, okay, I don't have necessarily my best stuff right now The the manager comes out to talk to you and you know in the back of your head like I can try to gut this through But it's not I'm not at a hundred percent How do you wage that like internal battle because I feel like every pitcher Just wants to tell the manager leave me and I got this. Let me get out of this jam. I got myself So how do you balance being honest while also
Starting point is 02:08:58 being competitive Well, it depends on why you're saying you don't have like your best stuff and remember like at this point You're You shouldn't expect to get out of bed and get to the field and warm up and feel feel perfect I think guys are are used to that and accustomed that at this point in the season If your command is off I mean, it's probably evident by the By the at bats that you've kind of as a starter if you're
Starting point is 02:09:25 If you're always behind in the count or you're not able to spin your breaking ball for a strike And I don't I don't envision that happening with You know, either one of the three top three guys for Philly And wheelers already shown it. No, they're showing it. He had a tough one his last go around You know against san diego ranger came into close the last game against the padres Thompson has continued to talk about their heart rate And how nothing really phases those three guys and I've been around them a lot and they're I mean You barely even know they're there going they're going about their business. They're quiet
Starting point is 02:09:56 But they're amazing teammates and when they get in between the lines, it's like those guys are ready to fucking go. So I think the only reason you may see something like that Is maybe it's a mental thing like if a guy is just not able to handle the moment It's not necessarily about the stuff or how he feels Maybe the moment could be getting to him But and I don't I don't envision that happening from anybody on either side But you know to answer your question I think that's that's what it would be like if you are telling somebody on the staff that
Starting point is 02:10:30 You know, I just don't have my best stuff. That's that's in your head. Yeah, so what about uh, dusty baker So manager of the astros from your experience one-on-one with dusty How is he getting his guys ready for a series like this? I don't think he has to do much. I really I really don't I think that this is just kind of another day at the office for these guys And it's it's so wild to say that, you know, there's Many players never get an opportunity to play in october that play for You know five six seven plus years and these guys And it's not by accident. It's not by chance. It's not by luck. It's by
Starting point is 02:11:07 And you got to give the organization a shit ton of credit for being able to put this type of group of guys together Having some nice free agents but being able to develop this many guys at the same time So I think dusty's job is really easy and you know, you hear bregman, you know talk after You know, they beat the Yankees in the cs and just everybody has such high praise, you know for dusty And they want to win this for him I think he's the most winning manager to not have a world series appearance or world world series win Yeah, so I mean they're they're doing this obviously for for them and their teammates But but for dusty and when you have a guy that's that's your leader your manager that you want to win and that you would you would run through a wall for
Starting point is 02:11:54 I mean, that's that just speaks speaks volumes for the type of guy that dusty is and not to mention I mean these gloves. I can't get over the gloves. I don't I mean It looks like he's about to cook some ribs That's like the whatever Yeah, or he's marinating like a pork shoulder to put in like the crock pot I I've done, you know, I got a box of gloves in the uh in the kitchen. Yeah moments like that. But uh, yeah, he's just He's the man. I mean and they they want to win this for dusty. So um It's almost not fair because america wants to root against the astros
Starting point is 02:12:29 But then they did a very smart thing by hiring dusty baker and having covet and covet. Yeah And also going to wuhan infecting a bat and then flying back over having no fans spreading it. Yeah, it's all fucked man Well, don't don't you think that like this Will finally if they win the world's series is kind of finally puts the bad the cheating scandal in like 17 I actually I'll go one further I think it already is put to bed with the fact that they've been to the world series Like the the run of success the sustained run of success that they've had If it had been just a one year and they never went back to like deep in the playoffs or anything like that
Starting point is 02:13:03 Yeah, we would have stuck with it forever and it's still fucked up. I'm not excusing them But it's clear that they're a really goddamn good baseball team and organization Um outside of the cheating scandal. So I have one last question. It's roback question promo code take 20 off your first purchase Uh q zips hoodies polos promo code take roback rhobacck.com also the new joggers So give us your pick because I'm I'm I'm I think most of america's kind of in a similar spot where We're rooting for the Phillies, but if I had to go with like your life is on the line The astros are an absolute machine Yeah, I mean, there's there's
Starting point is 02:13:40 It's very hard to go against the astros Um and the reason I'm going to do so is because I have ultimate faith in wheeler nola ranger Suarez the back end of their bullpen and the best player on the planet right now and brice harper guys like schwarber huskens remudo Stop like I I think that this is just the team that has the Really has the ability to get the job done against this Uh this astros team. I don't think anybody else would have I think that what they've gone through How they rally towards the end of the season just the momentum. It's just it's like
Starting point is 02:14:16 A snowball rolling downhill and this shit doesn't seem to be stopping yet. So I I think this game or I think this series goes seven games I'm gonna pick the Phillies to win it in seven On the road in houston Astros are I mean, they're not going to roll over obviously it's going to be extremely difficult I think, you know, they're they're going to lose a couple tough games in the series. It's going to go back and forth Uh, but as hot as they are now and what happened against the Against the Braves and how they handled, you know, san diego the way they did and watching san diego go through the Dodgers But uh Phillies believe they can beat anybody. Yeah
Starting point is 02:14:52 Um In this series, man, it's it's the perfect fit I don't think the teams have met and the post season since 1980. It's a good story for baseball It's probably the best team in baseball playing against the hottest team at baseball Also, I think 10 10 different 10 different world series champions in 10 years. I think if the Phillies win, right? Yeah, yeah, and this is harper's first appearance in the world series. Yeah, he's the best best player on the planet um I see, you know, him just continuing to stack up, you know, moment after moment, uh, and patting his resume
Starting point is 02:15:27 um It wouldn't surprise me if the astra astra was won, but I'm going Phillies in seven. Okay. Well, jake, thank you very much We appreciate it. I'm just gonna I'm gonna say Phillies in seven as well because that's what my heart wants. Um, And if they astros sweep them, I wouldn't be shot like that's you know, that good. Whatever. That's fine. Let's just yeah We'll stay the course the Phillies in seven. Thank you. Uh, as always man, we appreciate you coming on and uh, enjoy the world series It could be awesome. Yeah, man. So you tell me How sweet was that?
Starting point is 02:18:04 Yeah, I know you've uh, you're a bears fan. So it's been a long a long ride for you but uh, you know, I grew up a packer fan and So growing up watching brett farvin erin rogers You know, it was cool to be on the same field as him So getting to beat the guy that you grew up watching and idolizing was was super cool. So Um, yeah, that's definitely a top list top top of the Kind of top of the trophy room right there. Nice. That does sound cool as all I took away from that That does sound really super super super cool. Yeah, uh taylor first of all, thank you
Starting point is 02:18:34 For delivering that win. It's fun watching you play. I love it um, my question is That I heard that you get a pair of throwback jordan's In the color of every single team that you beat in the nfl Is that true and yeah, well, I guess that's I guess that's my is that true question? Is is that true expat? Would you mind talking about that? Yeah, yeah, and furthering the discussion Yeah, so that started last year. Um, I really started getting the You know the sneaker game last year and um, you know, we started winning games. I'm you know, I'm
Starting point is 02:19:09 I'm a small guy and get I get beat up throughout the game So I'm in the training room for a long time and while I was in the training room I was like, you know what? I'm gonna start this little tradition where every team we beat I'm gonna buy some jordan's in their color way so Yeah, I started last year and then so yesterday I was in the training room and found me some pretty sweet green green yellow fives that I bought so Um, you know once they come in I'll definitely post them, but uh, yeah, it's a cool little tradition I got I like that. I like that. Do you have a question for taylor?
Starting point is 02:19:37 Is it the the organ fives? Yeah, the organ fives Oh, okay. Good. Hello, Billy. Do you have a question? Hi Uh, quick question. Are zin tins the most signed memorabilia that you get asked to sign? Yeah, probably I'm actually looking at a can right now. So I put one in at home Probably sixes that's not a question. I'm just saying probably probably probably two sixes. Yeah, probably two six. No, not two six
Starting point is 02:20:09 Two six is getting me spinning. Yeah. Uh, I'm a man. I'm two sixes. Uh, yeah Yeah, hi taylor jake march part of my take podcast Over the last three years you've been a battlehawk a football team and a commander How does it feel to have probably the most unique list of team names under your belt and football history? yeah, it's uh It's it's different man, you know, the battlehawks was a weird one, but um, I will say their helmets are pretty sweet But again, I felt I feel like the coolest name was the football team. I mean, I thought that was I liked that one the best. So, um, yeah, I mean commander's school, you know
Starting point is 02:20:48 Hopefully we can keep this thing rolling left hand up. Yeah, I do like wait. I think max has a question. Oh max You have a question. Yes, you have a question. So the perfect timing to have joules on the show in studio Jim bows jimbos back So for everyone remembers jimbos people fucking up Telling us how they fucked up Now i gotta do everything in this pizza Uh Where should i start? Hmm sub twats. Oh, okay aggressive. Now. I remember why we stopped doing jimba. Yeah Was a groomsman in my buddy's wedding. Yes, if for when it's not coming from girls, uh
Starting point is 02:23:32 Was a dip was a bonk groomsman in my buddy's wedding after the rehearsal dinner. We were shooting the shit and You're bonking yourself To the list after the rehearsal dinner We were you just said that you liked hearing girls say the word twat. No, I said it's different when it's not coming from girls Which is again, you're hearing So you remarkable thing. Do you prefer coming from girls? No, I just think girls are a little nicer and don't say sub twats Like we don't say that we don't get those with guys on chicks. Yes, true. That's my point. All right. Keep reading. Thank you
Starting point is 02:24:03 If you can We were shooting the shit in church waiting for people to gather their things Another groomsman who's also isn't religious Splashes me with holy water and I yell odd burns I turn around and the pastor is glaring at me a few feet away. That's a fun joke. That's a great joke Honestly, if you're a pastor, it's it's like your world series if anybody calls you an exorcism, right? Yeah, if you think that there's even like a half percent chance that somebody is possessed by a demon You're like, this is this is why I've been training my entire life. This is why I left all these weights. Yeah. Yeah
Starting point is 02:24:35 Hey guys, I was at my university cafeteria for breakfast and had a waffle maker incident I went to press down the lever to get the waffle batter out But as I did the lever fell off All the batter and the machine started oozing out at a rapid pace I look for help and frantically started to explain what had happened to the workers, but they didn't speak any English I mean, sure they could tell what was going on After that didn't work I grabbed a bunch of napkins and covered the entire waffle maker table with them as the batter was starting to get on the floor
Starting point is 02:25:06 This is I love this visual. I calmly walked out of the cafe and not returned since It's been five days and I can't keep living off of pop tarts and Chick-fil-A. Is it safe to return? I think, um, there are there are certain things that happen, um Where you just have to walk away and I know that sounds like a terrible thing But there's like, you know, for the most part you should try to help a mess that's made But like that one seemed like it was out of control and you You're probably gonna make it worse. Yeah, I don't know like that's you could probably go back Yeah, and like a fucked up waffle maker. You don't you don't know how to repair that. Yeah, you probably would have just made it worse
Starting point is 02:25:43 I think that's what the situation like if you are if you find yourself in a situation of your own creating Yeah, that's gotten out of hand If there's any possible way that you can help rectify that situation you should try but there are a lot of times when it's like Oh, this toilet's overflowing Uh, well, I don't have a plunger I'm just going to make it worse if I try to do right or like if you get up If you like drop a bottle in a grocery store your job is you have to alert someone you have to be very remorseful But for the most part they're not going to be like, hey, can you help me clean this up?
Starting point is 02:26:14 Because then you get hurt or something like so there's those situations you just got to you got to show the correct amount of remorse and alert the authorities and Kind of get out of the way. Also It's not your fault that the handle broke. Yeah, that's true those waffle makers They should be sturdy enough that you should be able to close it. Maybe you were maybe you're getting reckless How much waffle batter was in there? Like yeah, it sounds like he put he was making a giant. It was like a soft serve. No, he was going to take it out Right, but it it sounded like it just kept on coming out
Starting point is 02:26:44 Which is a very funny thing to think well as a waffle enough waffle batter for a university. Yeah, that's oh So yeah, okay now I get it. It wasn't the actual waffle maker. Hey, no, no, it's like a water. It was like a draft of beer Yeah, yeah, I would have just laid down underneath it and just had it all go into my mouth and just eat waffle batter all day Fucking love waffles the best I had some tension building with this girl I matched with a different girl who was well out of my league on bumble, but I decided to delete my account However, I made sure to follow her instest so I could still sign her dm's Turns out she's friends with the girl I had tension with
Starting point is 02:27:23 So I ghosted her with hopes I could save what I already had Then started a new job and walked in and who was working the front desk But the bumble girl we haven't addressed it, but we both know what happened. What do I do? Oh It's guys being a pussy. Yeah, this is way just say it just fuck her You guys should just fuck just say you should just fuck everybody. Yeah in the office Don't do that I uh, I saw a great tweet the other day. Um, it was like instead of uh, like
Starting point is 02:27:55 High school or college reunions. There should just be reunions for like all the co-workers you liked at your shitty jobs How great would that be? Mm-hmm like because that's those are people you just never see again Yeah, it's like those are actually people you like you care about them. Yeah All right a couple more this one's this one's A lot to dissect I'm finally watching game of thrones for the first time. I know I'm way behind After watching the first couple of seasons. I was hooked
Starting point is 02:28:21 And naturally decided to go on the hub and see what was on there for g o. T Which I don't I don't I don't think I've ever had that like one plus one You went on porn hub to look for game of thrones. Yes. That's where he goes Wait, is he talking about after watching scenes from games or he's talking about like actors and actresses playing After watching the first couple of seasons. I was hooked and naturally decided to go on the hub And see what was on there about g o. T. No, that's not that Okay Remember nailing palin with lisa and it was pretty good
Starting point is 02:28:59 That got everyone into politics. What about like, of course, it's a natural inclination You watch game of thrones. You're like, I'm gonna see if they have any any brand related content And it's like there's already like game of thrones is pretty fucking whole like yeah, you can get your bonks off just watching the show Yeah The first result was two main characters john and denaris Getting together and this part doesn't make sense either ever since then it has ruined every near-death experience in final stories plot I'll never do it again because he's just like don't kill them. I want to jerk off to you again Or maybe he feels like he's become too close to them. No, I think I think like that
Starting point is 02:29:36 Then getting together ruined that they get together later in the season and probably there's a spoiler in the pornhub. Yes That's that's what the the title of the jimbo is game of thrones spoiled by yeah Yeah, okay, so they need to do spoiler free pornhub adaptations That's so funny Not natural, but whatever Teach the room All right, that was good jimbos. Wait, there's one more. This is a good one. Well It's something
Starting point is 02:30:02 I drowned my cat on accident putting the cover of my pool while my cat was swimming. Oh my god Yeah, that's yeah That's so fucked up How do you do this don't swim?
