Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, I'm Carolyn Quinn and welcome to the Business Blueprint from the UK's Department for Business and Trade, the Bite Size Podcast designed to help you scale and strengthen your organisation. In this episode, we're joined by Luke Seaman, the head of public affairs for Clarner, the Swedish Fintech company which has successfully scaled its business through UK investment. So Luke, why did Clarner choose the UK as a destination to scale the business? It's our view that you can't have any thriving sector without the support of policymakers, decision makers, regulators. And I think with the tech sector, you've absolutely got that.
Starting point is 00:00:38 The digital infrastructure in the UK has meant that you've got a UK consumer that is actually thirsty for new products for innovation and really embraces those new products and services. Thanks very much, Luke. Join us in part two at the end of your podcast and to find out more, search, invest in great. BBC Sounds. Seven years ago, I was filming East London Mosque when the story broke. The three schoolgirls from the area had gone missing. They were heading to Syria to join the Islamic State group.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Breaking news this morning, three British schoolgirls are reportedly missing. Shimla Beger was the only one of the girls to emerge from the ashes of the so-called caliphate. I've retraced her steps from the UK through Turkey and Inter-Siri to find people who knew her and to investigate the truth of her story. What do you think people think of you? How's it getting to her as a risk, as a potential risk? The Shemima Begum story series two of I'm Not A Monster. Listen on BBC Sounds.
Starting point is 00:01:42 BBC Sounds, Music, listeners may find upsetting. All events are dramatized. Emily, I want to die better this time. We thought the drugs might have made the tumor get smaller. I went to Dr. Richter at 3PM on Tuesday after this. Not a lot smaller, but the problem is it's now popped up in other places too. Popped? Sounds like whack-a-mole. And the lymph nodes also.
Starting point is 00:02:24 When it spreads like this, we call it bi-organ metastasis. There really isn't a good cure for this pattern of IVC. I'm really sorry, Connie. Well, we've been in a pretty committed relationship for the past seven months. You've not really been letting me go, so I know it was bad. I'm sorry. Me too. We should think about what you want to do next. We can try more invasive chemotherapy, which might want to live. Of course. And there's still some options.
Starting point is 00:03:07 I'm going to start you on a relatively new treatment plan, which uses Epirubicin instead of Adrymysin. It's quite invasive, so it would require you to be an inpatient during the entire procedure. No, I mean, I actually want to live. Me and Claire are meant to be going on a road trip. Right. Unless you think going on a road trip. Right. Unless you think that's a stupid idea. I think that's very wise, Connie.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Thank you. Regret number one. You weren't honest with anybody. You see the plane flying in? It's on the east side of the building. And it goes into the building with the smoke and the flames. On the day you died, you swore you were going to end things with truth. You were going to tell Gabe you finally believed in the one, him, and that you were pregnant. You were just explosion, now going to be on all this weirdo.
Starting point is 00:03:51 But you didn't do any of that. You turned off your phone and disappeared. I took Claire out for pancakes on Tuesday straight after my appointment with Dr. Richter. You're going to tell me I have another family in China? Yeah. It's popped up in my lungs. POPped. It's gross.
Starting point is 00:04:14 I'm sorry. Me too. But he said we should go on our trip. If you want, and that I can go for chemo when we're back. What happens if you die on the trip? No. I don't think it happens like that, sweetie. Regret number two,
Starting point is 00:04:34 when you died, you didn't think about anyone other than yourself. You didn't think about the fact that under all his bad luck, Drew was just doing his best. You didn't think that your selfish mother was just doing her best. Janet was doing her best. You didn't think that your selfish mother was just doing her best. Janet was doing her best. You didn't think about Marnie. Bruce, you just focused on yourself.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Other than Claire, you forgot to be grateful for anyone. Anything else to destroy the truck? We organized the trip in three days. And on the Saturday morning, we were ready to go. I asked Paul to come over and say goodbye. I realized the trip in three days, and on the Saturday morning, we were ready to go. I asked Paul to come over and say goodbye. Okay. Claire, go in with Tadya and do a final check, please.
Starting point is 00:05:14 And we've already done it. Now, I get it. Okay. I just wanted to, I wanted to thank you. Oh, I can't hear you, come. Thank you. I wanted to thank you for being nice to me. I can't hear you.
Starting point is 00:05:36 For being nice to me. I'm joking. I'm bald about death. Thank you, too. Can I kiss you one last time? Hmm? I can't, I can't hear you. Can I...
Starting point is 00:05:54 Fuck you, Connie. He's good at kissing, Amy. We got him to each other. Bye, losers! Bye! Miss you! We're great number three. In ancient Egypt, after dying, they had their hearts weighed in purgatory.
Starting point is 00:06:10 If you had a heavy heart, you'd never make it to the afterlife. You'd be stuck in the underworld forever. We're two men. Newark Airport, please. Emmy, you died that day with a heavy heart. These past few months, I realized it's weighed me down ever since. I've been sinking, never really living. Mom.
Starting point is 00:06:33 I get anxious every time she asks a question. Mom. Mm-hmm. We drive into the Grand Canyon, just as the sun sets. What's sweetie? Toggy told me that she loves me by the way. Whoa. Don't stop, stop. I told me that she loves me by the way. Whoa! Don't stop, stop. I don't want to talk about it.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Sorry. No, but that's very cool. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I said it back. That's great. Yeah. Yeah. First love changes a person. I really think that. You do? Yeah. There's yours. Drew, actually. Yeah. Drew was my first love. Six hours to Albuquerque. We sit down in a rundown diner. I whispered to the waitress. It's my daughter's birthday. Can we get her a keep-up?
Starting point is 00:07:26 Why would you do that? Seriously, it's- Oh, come on. We might as well squeeze in as many as we can. That's not funny, Mom. I don't like it. Go ahead. Chicago.
Starting point is 00:07:39 I lag behind as we walk through the Millennium Park. We sit on the bench and eat greasy, deep-dish pizza. I've started to let Claire ask me five minutes of questions a day. It helps her. Us. But you weren't scared, someone might find you. Well, yeah, I was. That's why I changed my name.
Starting point is 00:08:00 I was called, uh... Remely before. Emily. Emily over 10, and then Emily Morris. Yeah. And you're so not an Emily. I know. I know. Weird.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Emily. Emily. Emily. I'm finished. Really? You've hardly had any. It's greasy. You're gonna have mine. I'm fine. Since and Addy, we were getting dressed up for a karaoke night. No, just go. I hate my hair. I wish I'd never shaved it. Just go. Your hair, it's beautiful. I told you you looked like Tinkerbell.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Just leave me, please. You want me to perform Celine Dionne on my own. I don't care. Just go. Come on, Claire. We got one night. Stop, please. Just go. I get my things together in silence. And then... He's gonna hate my hair.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Who? You know, Drew He's gonna hate my hair. Who? You know, Drew's kids have got long hair. I saw. He's gonna hate me. He's not gonna hate your hair, honey. Well, I may hate him. You might, but he's not a very hateable man. Well, you hated him.
Starting point is 00:09:23 No. No, I didn't. Why did you pretend to die then if you didn't hate him? I said on her bed. That really wasn't anything to do with it. That's a wide relief. Why? I don't really want to tell you any more than if it's,
Starting point is 00:09:35 if it's that's okay. Well then you're still lying, didn't you? No, I'm not lying. I just don't think, I don't think, I don't feel like telling you more than what you already know. I don't get why it's you that decides... Well, I'm sorry. I don't sing Celine Dion.
Starting point is 00:09:49 We don't make it to karaoke. Washington, DC. We both get our own queen-sized bed. And if we squint and pretend a little, we can see the White House out the window. We lie in our beds, and I feel like a teenager to sleep over with my teenage kid. Claire?
Starting point is 00:10:08 Mm-hmm. Do you hate me? Sometimes. It's confusing. Yeah. Yeah. I bet. And I don't think I'll believe anyone ever again.
Starting point is 00:10:26 I... It's fine. Can we sleep now? Yeah. Clear. Are you awake? Yes. Will you try?
Starting point is 00:10:46 To believe people? Maybe. I believe you when you tell me that you love me. Good. I do love you. I believe Talia when she told me to. Regret number four. You push the pain away. In the taxi out of New York,
Starting point is 00:11:08 you vowed not to let yourself think about losing the greatest loves of your life ever again. Look, you still see the smoke from all the way back here. You didn't look, you put your sunglasses on. You didn't let yourself grief. Emmy, I haven't cried in 14 years. The state line border, we're crossing New Jersey in New York. As we drive down the New Jersey Turnpike, I let myself look.
Starting point is 00:11:31 I take it all in. I look at the gap in the skyline. I take it in. Groose expecting us in just under an hour. I take it in. I'm just putting us in just under an hour. I take it in. Huh? I'm fine.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I'm fine. Sorry, I just, ugh. Sorry, I just, I don't want him to hate me. He won't. Sorry. You know, on the phone, you said your mom sounds pretty cool. He did he did We pull up
Starting point is 00:12:11 Yeah, if I if I hate him then maybe Paul come and me say within or Talia. I'm still here clear And I'm not going anywhere until you're feeling really safe, okay? Okay You look beautiful. Thank you. Do I look okay? Sorry. Beautiful.
Starting point is 00:12:34 You look really beautiful. Hello. Hi. I'm Emily. I mean, this is Jenny. Amy and Jenny. Hi. You... You must and Jenny. Hi. You...
Starting point is 00:12:47 You must be Claire. Yeah. Yeah. He notices my bald head. Uh... I believe you. It all makes sense to him now. Emily's fine.
Starting point is 00:12:57 He looks away. I don't. Hi. Hi, Drew. Hi. He looks to Claire. Claire, would you like to come in? I was thinking that you can meet Lisa and the kids,
Starting point is 00:13:12 and then maybe we can go for a walk. Yeah. After, or, um, the A, there's a great place at the end of the street for milkshakes. If... Cooky, yeah. And have you been to Central Park? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:23 No. No. I haven't taken her Park yet? No. No. I haven't taken her there yet. Perfect. Yeah, we'll go there after... after Milchick. How's that? That sounds good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Great. Great. So, I'll maybe leave you guys to it and... Yeah. That would be good. Yeah. Is that good for you, Claire? Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Yeah. Yeah. That's fine. Cool. that's, well, take your time. Thanks, yeah, okay. Hey, let's, let's, yeah. Okay, bye, Mo. Love you, have fun. I listen outside the door, both of them straining to build a bond, bruised by the weight of my lies.
Starting point is 00:14:06 My body hurts. I drag myself to the car. It's done. Done. No! It's time. It's time. A single to you Los Angeles will be $698 in 69 cents. Regret number five. Can I have your name, please? Emily Morris.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Sorry, I can't hear you. Emily Morris, you died hating yourself. Emily? Emily? Emily Morris? I don't feel sick saying your name anymore. I don't. And so I think that's everything.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Love you, Emily. Emily here. No, stop. Emily, I love you. I love you so much. I love you. Your home, no, Emily. Home. We're home.

Starting point is 00:17:12 Hey, baggy flamboyant, luminous green pink and yellow shirts. Grill-creamed hair, boy bumps. Levi's denim jackets, walk on the clown. Welcome to Belfast 1997. Not just any old part of Belfast, but gay Belfast. It was electric. There was a Seminick guy dancing in cages. Every cell in my
Starting point is 00:17:31 body was just lit up. So that the bar was Diron Bradshaw. What happened next would go on to threaten peace in Northern Ireland. One of the few gay police officers in the country. Shot dead. If someone had told them that the darn Bradshaw was going to be murdered, it's a story that's never been told before. For his own skin, he traded darn life. This is Blood and the Dance floor. Listen, I, on BBC Sons. Hello and welcome back to the business blueprint
Starting point is 00:18:03 from the UK's department for Business and Trade. Let's hear a bit more now from Luke Seaman, from Clarner. The talent pool in the UK is one of the absolute standard attributes of the UK market. Clarner's UK offices, for example, in London and Manchester, we've got something like over 30 different nationalities just in our UK team. So it just shows you the wealth and the vast rich tapestry of skills that you get from across the world in the UK. What impact, if any, has Brexit had on your business decisions? Broadly, we look at Brexit as a big opportunity for the UK. There has been a fresh look at certain regulations that may not help innovation or tech.
Starting point is 00:18:40 There is great benefit yet to come from Brexit, and I think we're very excited about what we can achieve through that. Thank you, Luke. To scale and strengthen your business, just as Klaner has done, investing in the UK could be the right next step for you. To inquire and find out more, search Invest in Great.
