There's growing mystery about the death of one of the country's sporting heroes Marco Pantani. In November 2021, new evidence had come to light, alleging that the Italian Mafia were involved in Marco Pantani's death. The Mafia coast were money years. It's a very dark story, the pantani story. Sports Strangest Crime, Smokopentani Death of a Pirate. Listen, wherever you get your podcasts. BELL In 2012, a new charity bursts onto the scene. It's called Believing Magic, and it grants wishes to seriously ill children.
Starting point is 00:00:43 It has the support of the biggest boy band in the world, One Direction. It's run by an inspirational 16-year-old girl called Megan Barry, who herself is battling a brain tumour. I've been in and out of hospital and seen so many other very poor children. But when questions arise about her story, they reveal she could be facing another very different danger. What is this girl going through? It wasn't supposed to have like this. Listen to Believe in Magic with me, Jamie Bartlett, on BBC Sounds.
Starting point is 00:01:14 BBC Sounds, Music, Radio, Podcasts. This episode contains themes and strong language, which some listeners may find upsetting. All events are dramatized. In and out. In and out. I went to the beach with Claire, Emmy. One scoop of salted caramel, please. I did it wrong. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:02:04 We got gelato. Should we walk? Sure. We walked down the beach. Careful, your colds, you can't. Dr. Richard said you can't have them. What? A surgery.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Didn't he? He said you're too sick. What? No. No. So what? Just tell me. I wasn't even thinking about the cancer, Emily. No. No, the cancer is exactly what we expected. It's just I will have the mastectomy on Wednesday and then the radiation a few weeks after and then and then that that should be it and If it isn't
Starting point is 00:02:54 If it isn't then the treatment options are a bit more limited Well, what does that mean? It means we we would have tried everything. Right. But we're not there yet. Okay, and I was thinking that we should... we should book the trip after the surgery. Cool. The little hairs on our legs. We sit on a bench, we look at the sea, in and out.
Starting point is 00:03:28 I've been thinking... that I should probably... I should probably tell you about your dad. What about him? Well... He didn't die, like I said he did. Yeah, I knew that. We killed him, so.
Starting point is 00:03:59 We entol you with you. That's why you got so weird when we talk about it. You know, our uncle, he killed himself too. He was at the Santa Monica Healed a Bay of Query. He didn't die, sweetie. No, he didn't. Tali went to the funeral. It was on her birthday and they were
Starting point is 00:04:14 who might have been only years. No, no, no, no, I mean your dad. He didn't die, actually. He's alive. And I know it sounds, I know that must sound really weird and confusing. He's alive? I think so.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You think? Yeah. And last time I checked, he was alive in New York. He's alive. I knew it. Yeah, I think so. Well, you haven't been in New York. Well, I know I did say that. And so you have been in New York. Yeah, I think so. Well, you haven't been in New York. And I know I did say that.
Starting point is 00:04:46 And so you have been in New York? Yeah, I have been. Actually, I used to live there with your dad. With Andrew Morris, that's his name. We were married, actually. And I drew, I called him. Drew. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:02 What about Elliot? Yeah, Elliot. he's not. I actually made Elliot off. I know that sounds. It's hard to explain. Well, then explain it. Yeah, I explained it. Do you remember this twin towers?
Starting point is 00:05:16 Yes, of course I remember the twin towers. Learning about 9-11. Yeah. I used to actually work there in the North Tower in a very boring job. And... Mom, just speak, just say it. Sure. We mean Drew. We weren't...
Starting point is 00:05:33 We were not having a very good time in our marriage. And I was... It got confusing and I didn't really know how to handle it all. And I actually ran away after September 11th. I pretended to die. I know that sounds terrible. And I know it must sound. I didn't really know what else to do.
Starting point is 00:06:09 I didn't know I was pregnant with you until I got to LA. And so by the time I found out... You didn't tell me. No, sorry, doesn't know about me. No. Not yet. Not yet. Not yet. He thinks you're dead. Yeah. He doesn't know. I couldn't do it. I couldn't say it all.
Starting point is 00:06:41 I couldn't tell her about Gabe. She runs. Her tiny't tell her about Gabe. She runs. Her tiny legs kicking up the sand. To the car. I try and follow but I'm basically crawling in slow motion. I grip onto my car and try to breathe. Claire watches, stands back, silent. She wants me to die. I reach for a sugar sweet.
Starting point is 00:07:07 She just washes me struggle. Take me home. I will just give me a minute. Now! Now! Take me home! Now! Okay I'm really sorry. Please just shut up. Okay, I'm sorry. You're not! You're just dying! And I'm gonna be left on my own, so you just have to tell me.
Starting point is 00:07:30 She was right. I'd like to reach out to him if you'd like me to. Please! I have told you to stop. Just stop. Silence. She went to her room. I lay on my bed.
Starting point is 00:07:46 I open Facebook. I search. Type. Deer Drew. Deer Drew. No. Hi, fuck. Deer Andrew. My God. Andrew.
Starting point is 00:08:00 I sleep on it. I throw up four times in the night. Claire goes to school without saying goodbye. Dear Andrew. To me you're always true. Drew is pretty difficult to know how to start this message. Maybe... sorry, this best. I used to be known as Emily Morris. You called me Emmy.
Starting point is 00:08:29 I now go under the name of Connie Prin. I know you thought Emily Morris died on September 11th, 2001. But I'm here, actually. Still alive. I know that my son's totally crazy. Words can't really express how sorry I am, but I don't know what else I can do. I thought you might not believe me, which would be totally understandable. So just to prove it, you used to call me Hedgehog. You have a mole right at the base of your spine. You used to make homemade calzonez and bagels and basically loved anything with gluten.
Starting point is 00:09:08 I lost a coin toss and you made me get a job on our wedding, which was 26th of September 1994. Your mom smashed her champagne glass because of her tremor and in bed that night I told you I think there might be something wrong with her. We got Bruce when we first moved to Brooklyn and you proposed to me over Kibble, and I still don't really understand what Kibble is. I'm not reaching out for anything to do with me. You can despise me and that's totally fair. It's just to tell you about Claire. Drew, you have a daughter. Call Claire. She's perfect and she turns 14 in June. And she's yours. Hours.
Starting point is 00:10:06 And yesterday? And yesterday I told her you were her dad. I didn't know I was pregnant when I left. I gave birth in California and by then you'd already grieved for me. I've lived here ever since. She's healthy, unkind, and smart, and generous, and looks just like you. If you'd like, we can talk about why I left, or I don't have to say anything, whatever you want.
Starting point is 00:10:38 But Drew, we weren't happy, I don't think. I wonder if you thought we were happy. I'm sorry I'm doing this on Facebook. I want to give you the chance to take your time. I'm sorry. Feel free to never respond. I don't know if I'm saying the right thing. Emmy. I didn't want to tell him about the cancer. I don't want that to be the reason he responds. I type myself.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Close my eyes. Three. Two. I click send. And. And out. Claire never stays out this late on a school night. Claire?
Starting point is 00:11:23 Her bed's perfectly made. I text her. Where is this? Reply, please. No reply. I call Paul. She's still not back. No.
Starting point is 00:11:35 It's getting dark. I'm sorry. Jesus, she'll just be letting off steam. Claire, where are you? I'm worried now. Please, Claire, I need to be at the hospital first thing. Well? No. Con, can you go into her the hospital first thing. Well? No.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Hey, Conn, can you go into her room? Check if her backpack is there. Yeah, yeah, I'm going to go and hang on. It's not. Well, then she's planned it. You called her, France parents? Tell you I said you were going camping on the beach. Oh, right. Damn, I should have checked.
Starting point is 00:12:08 We can go get them. No, we'll let them have a nice evening. I didn't sleep. Paul takes me to the hospital for his thing for my surgery and then promises to go like Claire. What if she isn't there? She will be. Just breathe, please. She won't want to come to the hospital. We'll just stay with her if she doesn't want to. She won't wanna come to the hospital. Con.
Starting point is 00:12:25 Will you just stay with her if she doesn't want to? Stop. It's going to be okay. I promise. In and out. In and out. In and out. The surgery was one hour and 40 minutes.
Starting point is 00:12:39 I fell asleep thinking Claire would never come home. Do you? Hello, Connie. We're asleep. Claire? never come home. Hello Connie. We're Sly. Claire? Try and stay calm Connie. Keep breathing. In and out with the Claire.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Sly. I'm here. Well, oh, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm here. Okay. You're here. And in and out. She's here. Okay. She're here. And in and out.
Starting point is 00:13:05 She's here. Okay. She's in. In and out. In and out. Hello? Emily? Drew?
