Pints With Aquinas - BONUS: Catholics should NOT support Pride Month
Episode Date: June 11, 2021I felt it was important to record this video. This is airing in the middle of Pride Month, and Catholics need to have the courage to stand up for Church teaching and state that they cannot support P...ride Month. Now to be clear: the Church does NOT say we should hate people who experience same-sex attraction. It DOES say that we ought to treat them with respect and compassion. But that does NOT mean we can say their actions themselves are properly ordered. So first we’re going to take a quick look at what the Catechism actually says about this topic. Then I’ll offer you some hope by showing you messages from bishops who are publicly taking a stance for the Catholic Church’s teaching on sexuality. Hey there, welcome to Pints with Aquinas. Why do I want to do a video like this?
Because I think it's really important that Catholics continue to reiterate what the Catholic Church teaches,
even when those teachings are unpopular and not welcome.
Honest question for you, how many Catholic YouTube channels have addressed the issue of Pride Month this month. I actually don't know,
and so that's not actually a judgment, but I'd be curious to see how many, you know,
big YouTube channels have addressed this. Why do I say that? Because there's not an insignificant
chance that I'd get penalized for teaching Catholic truth. But I kind of don't care anymore.
I don't mean to sound cavalier about it, but I will not stop teaching what the Catholic Church
teaches just because it's not popular. So if YouTube wants to come after me, that's fine.
Come after me.
My family and I will do something else.
But an honest question, how many significant Catholic YouTube channels are addressing this?
My fear is that we're not addressing this because we've all heard of channels that are getting shut down because they fall out of step with Catholic dogma.
So what I want to do today is take a look at what certain...
It's a shame to say brave.
It's a shame we even have to say brave.
There should just be actual bishops addressing this.
But we have some quotes, some tweets that I want to share with you from different bishops who are speaking out against Pride Month.
Before we look at that, however, I want to take a look at what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say.
at that, however, I want to take a look at what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say,
because it's really important that we reiterate the Church's position on homosexuality,
because the media, big tech, who else? The Democratic Party, I'm sure, would have you believe that the only reason you would disagree that homosexual acts
can be good is because you hate them. But this isn't at all true. This is a lie. This is, as they
say, fake news. This comes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and it states it pretty
clearly. It begins by saying homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who
exercise an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction towards persons of the same sex.
Fair enough, hopefully no disagreement, but who knows.
It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures.
Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained.
Basing itself on sacred scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity.
And it gives you several examples here.
Tradition has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.
Now, what that's not saying, because that can ring hard on the ears
if you are somebody who experiences same-sex attraction,
you might have the impression that the Catholic Church just said,
you're disordered, you know, and, you know, that's not a great way to begin a dialogue. But what it's saying is that there are certain acts that
are disordered. That is to say, they're not properly ordered. So this has to do more with
the act than the person, right? If you look at eating, there is an end to eating, namely nutrition.
If I put food in my mouth and make myself throw it up, this is a
disordered act because just when you look at it naturally, the point of eating is nutrition.
Similarly, I would say that using a condom is a disordered sexual act because I think contraception
thwarts the end of the sexual act. Likewise with masturbatory acts, pornographic acts,
even, well, no, maybe that's not a good one,
but I won't tell you what I was thinking.
But homosexual acts would be another example.
They are disordered.
They are not ordered towards the end.
Sex ought to be ordered too.
That's what that means.
Oh, there we go.
They are contrary to the natural law, as we just saw. They close
the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine, effective, and sexual
complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. This is what the church teaches,
even if you've been given a different impression from certain prelates like Father James Martin.
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual
tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition. For most of them,
it is a trial. Now, maybe that's disputed, but at least, well, you can hash that out in the
comment section. Listen to this, though. This is important. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.
So if you are a Christian and maybe you've been so like just fed up with all the LGBTQ propaganda
that's coming after you and your kids, you may get to a point where when you engage with somebody who has same-sex attraction, you're not respectful.
You're not compassionate.
You're not sensitive.
So what would the officer?
You'd be disrespectful, not compassionate, not sensitive.
ought to be and that if we're disrespectful to somebody because of their sexual inclination that this is a sin and that you and i should repent of that
so the catechism the catholic church teaches that every sign of unjust discrimination in their
regard should be avoided okay should these persons are called to fulfill the will of god in their
lives and if they are christians to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's cross,
the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
All right.
Why do I say that when many of you are Catholic and you're like,
okay, yeah, we get it.
We've heard this before.
Well, we got to say it.
It's almost like when I speak about the negative effects of pornography,
I have to begin by talking about the beauty of sex
because there's a false understanding out there
that Christians are against porn because they're against sex. This is not true, so I have to begin
by saying sex is good and then I show why pornography isn't. Likewise, if we're going to
show why Catholics cannot join our friends in celebrating Pride Month, we have to begin by showing that we love all people.
Whether you have same-sex attraction or opposite-sex attraction,
whether you are involved in masturbation or pornography or even adulterous relationships,
you're loved. You're loved.
But we can't condone certain behaviors that are intrinsically evil.
So let's take a look at an article that
came out from Church Pop today. It showed up on my screen, so I want to go through this with you.
Catholics should not support LGBTQ Pride Month, Providence Bishop says in brave tweet. Again,
it's a shame that a Catholic teaching Catholic teaching should be considered brave, but he is
because he's in the minority let's see providence
bishop thomas tobin stirred controversy after tweeting catholic church teaching regarding lgbtq
pride month the rhode island bishop said it is contrary to catholic faith and morals to support
or attend lgbtq pride month events why well because it causes scandal, right? We aren't celebrating what they're celebrating.
In fact, we should be mourning it, I think. He also said they are especially harmful for children.
Of course, because it perverts what sex is in the minds of young people. The tweet received more
than 90,000 responses. Wow. Almost 30,000 likes and 7,000 retweets.
Can I tell you another reason I'm doing this video?
It's not just because I know it will do well because it's a hot topic and it's the month of June and somebody needs to respond to this.
It's also because I want to encourage my father priests and my father bishops to not let secular society gag them. Do not bow the knee to secular dogma.
Be faithful to Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church. I say this as a son of the
church who is a sinner and who is in need of conversion. I don't say this in a judgmental sense, right?
Standing on a pedestal above anybody.
I say it in a sense as a brother who knows what it's like to have a platform
and to have the risk of that platform being taken away if you speak truth that is unpopular.
So here's what he said.
truth that is unpopular. So here's what he said. A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ Pride Month events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities
that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful to children, 100%.
Bishop Tobin's full tweet reads, A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBT Pride Month event held in June.
They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals, especially harmful to children.
Bishop Tobin said in a follow-up statement that the Catholic Church has respect and love for members of the gay community, as do I.
He added that individuals with same-sex attraction are beloved children of God and are
our brothers and sisters. Amen. And honestly, how immature do you have to be to not be able
to make that distinction? Why can't I love you and disagree with your behavior?
Surely I could think of an example in your life where you disagree with somebody's behavior but
would love them. You might disagree with my behavior. where you disagree with somebody's behavior but would love them,
you might disagree with my behavior. You might disagree with this video, but I would presume that you would love me. So why can't I do the same thing?
I think it's immature. I can love you and disagree with your behavior,
just like you love people and disagree with your behavior just like you love people and disagree with their behavior um public response to bishop tobin bishop tobin received mixed responses but the mainstream media
highlighted the terrible backlash the daily mail article highlighted the negative responses bishop
tobin received including that from popular social media users and politicians the boston globe even labeled bishop tobin homophobic what a stupid
slanderous thing to say i'm quite convinced and would put money on the fact that bishop
tobin is not afraid of gay people which is what homophobic means.
And if you want to redefine homophobic to mean hateful, then you haven't read what he had to say.
He's clearly not hateful. He expressed as much. What, can you read minds? Do you know something that he doesn't know?
This is his mind and will, after all.
What access do you have to it?
You don't.
Oh, is it just that people who disagree with you must be hateful?
What an idiotic and immature thing to say.
However, Diocese of Tyler, Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland defended Bishop Tobin.
Thank goodness to have another bishop speak up.
Wouldn't it be good if we had more?
That's part of the point of this video.
Not to shame, right? Not to whine and complain, but to say when we live in a society that has an entire month dedicated to something that's immoral, you would think that Catholic leaders, not just
bishops, not just priests, but all Catholics, in whatever way they could, would speak out about it with clarity and charity.
Bishop Strickland says,
Please stop labeling bishops who speak the truth of the gospel as homophobic.
God gave us sexual intimacy for the procreation of children and the deeper union of a man and a woman in marriage.
Stating this truth is not homophobia.
It is simply reality.
Ah, yes, let's see. Bishop Strickland defends Bishop Tobin in another tweet, explaining that he was simply speaking for one truth of the
deposit of faith. Bishop Tobin is simply speaking for one truth of the deposit of faith. God made
humans male and female. Certainly those who are confused about their identity need Christ's love and compassion. Let's remember Christ's love is expressed when he dies on the cross for the truth.
Amen. While it seems, the article continues, as if the whole world is against Bishop Tobin
and Strickland, and certainly social media would like to have it seem that way. Multiple social media users came to his defense,
so let's take a look at some of them. Mary Rose Moskowitz says, love is speaking the truth.
If we had more clergy and religious willing to speak the truth, the church would be truly
united in her mission. Lord of the North said, thank you, Bishop, for speaking the truth about human sexuality in marriage.
Stay strong. Peace and prayers.
Let's see. Oh, it's good to see we have a priest here.
Father Richard Heilman expressed his support.
I'm sure we had multiple priests, so God bless you.
What did he have to say?
The apostles were not silenced by the sin of Judas.
Oh, but one gave their lives for the sake of the truth of Jesus Christ.
His Excellency Bishop Thomas Tobin has the courageous heart of the first bishops.
I stand with you, Your Excellency.
It's good to see.
Another Twitter account posted a campaign entitled,
Hashtag Stand with Thomas Tobin.
to the campaign entitled, hashtag stand with Thomas Tobin. And this is really, as I say, a big part of me wanting to make this video. We need to be vocal about our support of Catholic
leaders that simply teach church teaching in a day and age where it is not welcome.
That's all you have to do. If you're not brave
enough to get on your social media platform and to charitably and clearly teach what the church
teaches in this particular month, well, then can you at least support those bishops who are taking
a stand? It's sad that we have two bishops that this article could
come up with. Two, that's it. Maybe if you and I got behind them, and as I say, with gentleness
and charity, supported them and our other bishops, we would see the Catholic Church
being clearer about what Christianity has always taught. I think one of the things that we need to do
to grow in courage, and this is true of me too, I'm a coward and I want to grow in courage,
is we need to ask God for it. There's a lovely devotion called the Three Hail Mary devotions.
I know some people, in order to grow in the virtue of chastity,
will fall to their knees in the morning and pray three Hail Marys. Maybe you can do that. Maybe you
need to do that for courage, to pray for the gift of courage. If you're looking for an app to help
you pray, I want to suggest that you check out hallow.com slash Matt Fradd. There's a link in the description below.

hello.com slash mattfradd. As we close here, why don't we offer a Hail Mary for those priests and
bishops and Catholics with public platforms that they would be courageous enough to speak the truth with charity and
clarity. And let us also pray for our friends who experience same-sex attraction, that they would
know how loved they are by Jesus Christ and that they, like all of us, all including myself, would live a chaste life.
Join me in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of our death. Amen.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
