But it being better boo. Welcome to this week's mini-sode of Rotten Mango. It's not going to be a mini-sode.
Starting point is 00:00:37 I'm your host Stephanie Sue, but I'm just going to say right now it's not going to be a mini-sode. It's going to be a sickum's case, a bizarre case. She was going to be an Olympian, an Olympian, in the high contact game of Water Polo. Arguably, one of the hardest sports to play. Have you played it before? If you're able to keep swimming for hours at a time in deep water, hours at a time. This might be the game for you.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Your team is gonna fight to get control of one ball that needs to be thrown into the net of the opponent So think soccer, but in the deep end of the pool All the while there's a goalie. There's defensive players doing whatever it takes to make sure you don't score Sometimes they do really whatever it takes they may try to dunk on you They may try to pull your swim shorts down Sometimes the game can get so dirty that it's dangerous Meanwhile the offensive players. Yeah, they're not going to be any gentler. They're going to want
Starting point is 00:01:28 to take you down so that they can take the ball and throw it into your net. That's the game that Kelly was in love with. That was her life passion. She wanted to compete in the women's water polo games at the 2000 Olympics. This was just a stepping stone to get there. The huge national competition. Her team played well. They gave it their all. Did they win? No. But they all went to the bar as afterwards to party and drink. Kelly's downing these shots with her teammates. They did everything together. Nothing was going to stand in these girls' ways. No man, no children, no marriage, no commitment, nothing. This was their dream. They were gonna be Olympians.
Starting point is 00:02:06 They were sacrifice. Yeah, they're still gonna try to be Olympians, okay? They're gonna sacrifice anything to become Olympians. Cheers. And that's when Kelly slipped through the front door of that bar after downing one last shot because she had to go to the hospital. The teammate who saw her daily in her swimsuit didn't know. Her parents that lived with her didn't know.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Her boyfriend didn't know. But Kelly did. She was about to give birth. She was going into labor. Wait, right after she finished the game? Yes. Of Water Polo that you can't play when you're pregnant. What?
Starting point is 00:02:43 She was like nine months pregnant. She was ready to burst. She gave birth right after this game. The huge national finals. This is the story of a woman who had five secret pregnancies, and one of her children vanished from the hospital. I mean, it's a bizarre story. So as always, full source notes are available at rottenmingopodcast.com, but there's a really
Starting point is 00:03:05 good docuseries from ABC called Exposed. Exposed. Kelly Lane. There's interviews with her family, her friends, Kelly Lane herself, and there's a book called Nice Girl by Rachel Jane Chin, which I mean, she was close to the prosecutors, the police working on this case, She was meticulous with the details She poured through transcript after transcript. This is the best deep dive that you're gonna get on this case I highly recommend it. So who is Kelly Lane? First, I need to tell you about manly
Starting point is 00:03:37 Australia. No, I'm not trying to masculinize Australia. It's a town called manly. It's a suburb of Sydney, Australia And it's it's a beautiful place. They say it makes you feel like you're on vacation 24-7. I mean, I don't know. I've never been in Australia that feels like most of Australia, but Manly has big beaches that salty smell in the air, that upper middle-class population. It's a huge sports town. So on paper, it seems like the best place to live, right? But it's a pretty judgy place. Either you're a local who is born and raised there and you have some power in the community, or you're just another tourist, or you're just another transplant. It's also the type of town where the same few people are in control of everything. So they're
Starting point is 00:04:18 the ones on the school board, they're the ones that are politicians. They even have control over the rugby teams, which is huge and manly. Rugby. They have control over everything, the police department even. The politicians in that area were former players in the same rugby team. They were best friends with the leading businessmen who also probably played rugby with that. So this talent is run by rugby? Oh yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:04:41 What is it? Rugby. Rugby. Now I feel like I'm is it? Rugby. Rugby. Now I feel like I'm saying it. Rugby teams. So Kelly Lane was born to dad, Robert Lane, the football coach, and also a police officer for the Manly Police Department. And to mom Sandra, everybody called her Sandy.
Starting point is 00:04:58 She worked in hospital administration. She was a very interesting woman. So Rob the dad was super well respected from day one I mean the family didn't come from money like some of the families out there But I mean it's been years since the rugby team had even come close to making the semi-finals But now with Rob Lane as the coach. Oh, they made semi-finals every season They even reached the finals twice the grand grand finals once. He's killing it! Which when everyone was all over Rob, they thought that he had the secret sauce. He's got
Starting point is 00:05:30 the juice I tell you. He's who the team needed all along. We've been waiting for a coach like this one. The Lane family was in the middle of all of this spotlight just like all the time. They weren't wealthy, they weren't politically powerful, but they were well known, and they were well respected. Sandy really took a role as a socialite super serious. She eventually found herself at the top of the food chain. She was what you would call like a social queen bee. And she planned all of the exclusive rugby parties. She planned who was on the guest list.
Starting point is 00:05:59 She meticulously planned who was not on the guest list. She would leave out them. Once a year, honestly, she was kind of ruthless to not be invited to her dinner party would probably feel extra sh- the wives and the girlfriends of all the rugby players knew that if you want to be a star athlete and go pro one day, Sandy has to approve of you, the coach's wife. That was the only way in, and honestly, being fully transparent, Sandy loved every single minute of it. She loved the power. She was drunk on it.
Starting point is 00:06:26 It was her poison. And even though Rob was killing at us coach, they hadn't had a better coach in forever. The board was sick. The board was sick of all of these close calls. They're like, okay, yeah, I get it. Thank you for taking us to the grand finals, but we need to win and you need to make us win. And if you don't, we're gonna we're cutting you. So they replaced Rob with another guy named Alan Jones. Now this guy's not from Manly, so honestly this caused a lot of drama in the social circle. It's an outsider. Coaching the rugby team, disgusting, but Alan knew a thing or two about rugby because they won.
Starting point is 00:06:58 They won the, they won the shoot shield. The precious shoot shield and Rob was devastated. He became depressed. His self-esteem took a giant hit and the only reason that Rob was rehired as the coach of the rugby team was because Alan, this coach, was offered the coaching position in the national team of Australia called the Walla Bees. Not just the town or the city team but the national team. I mean, how do you say no that? So Rob gets his jog back and he's determined to just hit the ground running. They kill it the first few games that were so happy, Rob even told the newspapers,
Starting point is 00:07:30 it's a great performance from our boys to grab these points. But he spoke too soon, because they started losing just game after game. They were only one loss away from being cut from the semi-finals, which he made this disastrous decision of switching out the captain of the team. I mean, this is super risky, because it messes with morale, it messes with the whole hierarchy of the team, right? And they glossed.
Starting point is 00:07:52 So he knows his time is up. I mean, this board is all about switching people out when they're useless. So instead. So these games are that cutthroat. Oh my God. Oh my God, your job is on the line. Your whole livelihood is on the line. I would be out in the field tackling people. I'd be so nervous.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Exactly. So instead of socially bearing the hate, the shame, the being outcasted from the socialites, he stepped down as a captain. He said, guys, I need to focus on my family. You know, my daughters are about to be teenagers now. They're very very athletic themselves. I need to focus on training them So Rob stayed local royalty his entire family did they joined the manly surf life-saving club They do a lot of surfing and a lot of clubbing not as much life-saving from what I can tell Kelly their daughter would do these beach sprints with her parents She was like daddy's little girl. She was super athletic. Ever since she could walk, she's already doing all sorts of sports and she loved it. She would even rush into the locker room as a little girl,
Starting point is 00:08:53 and the minute that she lost, she would just yell at a string of curse words, like graphic profanity. What? But people found it kind of shockingly funny, because here's this. I don't know what six-year-old Just cursing her head off because she lost a game of like I don't know hide and seek some regular sport By the time that she's a teenager she's on track to become an elite athlete her favorite sport you ask Water polo it always sounds super fancy, but it's I mean it's an intense sport It's definitely not an easy one. It's no joke. To me, it just sounds like competitive drowning. Honestly, it feels like the Hunger Games, because a lot of things can happen underwater. A lot of people say, unless you're playing with a lot of good refs, is that what you call it, referees?
Starting point is 00:09:37 A lot of people say it's one of the dirtiest sports, because it's a contact sport, and everything underwater, it's hard to say what's going on with all the splashing all the legs all the limbs, right? It's just you can play super dirty. People can grab you, client you. It's a contact sport. They can try to pull off your swimwear. Anything they can think of, it's not a casual sport. I heard that this is like a lot of different athletes that do a lot of different games. We will try to play water polo and they get so wiped. They can't even do it. It's one of those. So it takes a special someone to play this type of sport. A super elite athletic person. Once you get to the competitive level, it's not uncommon to train two times a day.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Two times a day. And then afterwards, you have to do cardio training outside of that. Because in order to be able to swim for one and a half hours without stopping, you've got to be peak level fitness, peak level health. So Kelly, she's a superior player, she's good, she can swim, she can block opponents, she's good at passing the ball and on top of that after games, she's good at parting with the team I mean she lives it up. She's downing shot after shot She had a reputation of being and I quote being able to drink as much as the boys And she loved it like she really prided herself on it She's like yes, I can keep up with the boys because I'm not like other girls like I I can down shots
Starting point is 00:11:02 I love beers. She's really popular She has a ton of connections from her parents. She's always surrounding herself with people. Now it's said that Kelly was kind of like her mom. In the sense that she enjoyed this power that she had over people. And if she didn't like you, it's said that she was kind of nasty. She didn't really think the rules applied to her. She had a bit of a temper. But if you wanted to fit in with this crowd, you kind of had to get her acceptance. She was Rob's daughter and Rob was relatively influential in the sports world of Manly
Starting point is 00:11:29 Australia. This is the way it worked. This is the social hierarchy. She was kind of the egg girl and her boyfriend couldn't just be any random little boy, she had to date, the egg guy, so she meets the guy, let's call him, Adam. He's 15 years old, so she was a star kayaker and his dream was to become an Olympian kayaker They don't play regular sports there, huh? Yeah, no, they won't play like fancy sports. Have you guys ever heard of like, I don't know basketball
Starting point is 00:11:59 Y'all got to be on the water all the time Literally relationship goals. She's living her best life with her fellow admirable boyfriend that everyone's like, oh my god, her friends envy her. I mean, what more could she ask for? She's even touring on the Australian schoolgirls team for water polo, and it's actually on one of these trips that Kelly felt super weird.
Starting point is 00:12:19 What is she touring? It's like when Australia picks a bunch of girls in that age group that are really good at water polo in the nation And they go to other countries to play like the other high school kids. Oh wow. Yeah, so this is a big deal So out of curiosity, you know, she's feeling a little weird on one of these trips Why not let me just take a pregnancy test. Honestly, she's super dramatic. I'm on the pill There's no way but maybe for giggles and some piece of mind
Starting point is 00:12:45 I'm gonna imagine how funny the story is when I tell my friends. I'm negative But I genuinely thought I was pregnant for a second there like it's not funny. It's funny, right? She takes the test and will you guess it comes back positive She's pregnant So she immediately tells her boyfriend Adam and she's like, well, what do we do? We're both not ready We have so many dreams and goals. You have to kayak. I have to water polo So she immediately tells her boyfriend Adam and she's like, what do we do? We're both not ready. We have so many dreams and goals. You have to kayak.
Starting point is 00:13:07 I have to water polo. I don't think having a child is the best thing right now. What do we do? So after four days of talking about it, they both come to the agreement. She was going to get an abortion. So he says, listen Kelly, I know a clinic in the city. I can take you there. Just like, no, it's fine, Adam.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Just drop me off at the ferry. I can catch a ferry. So Adam just no, it's fine, Adam. Just drop me off at the ferry. I can catch a ferry. So Adam just watches her, get on to this ferry. Doesn't even go with her. Just swathes for her to get back. And for the next few years, their relationship starts falling apart. I mean, it makes sense. You didn't even go with her, dude.
Starting point is 00:13:37 So Adam's working on the beach one day as a lifeguard, and he gets a message on the radio. Help! Help! There's a boy. He's dead. He's drawn. We think he's dead at least. I don't know, we don't come hurry.
Starting point is 00:13:48 He's near the rocks where the fishermen are. So Adam rushes out there and he had to wait next to this little boy's body till the rescue helicopter arrived. And he was traumatized, which honestly makes sense. He couldn't go near the water without picturing this little boy. He started spending less and less time at the beach, less and less time kayaking, less and less time doing things that he wanted to do, and Kelly at first
Starting point is 00:14:13 was understanding. She wanted to help him with his PTSD, but she couldn't give up the beach, so naturally they drifted, pun intended, they drifted apart. They break up, but of course, there's some drama. After their breakup is a Saturday night, Kelly's out clubbing with a guy that she's you know kind of casually seeing Let's call him Ben and they happen to make out full force in the club entrance and Adam walks by sees them He's drunk. He's pissed. He starts screaming in front of everyone. You're a slut Kelly. You're a fucking slut It was so bad that police officers had to pull Adam away. Tell him to cool down, but he didn't.
Starting point is 00:14:49 So he was handcuffed and dragged out of the club to the station. Meanwhile, Kelly is living her best life. She's like, what a loser. I'm focusing on my sports. Her main disappointment was that the men's water polo sport was taken super seriously. It's an Olympic sport, but not the women's games. A ton of female water poloers, they were lobbying together to have it included in the 2000 Olympics that would be held in.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You guessed it, Australia! She's like, this would be the first time it's in the Olympics and it's in my home country of Australia. Are you kidding? So all of her and her friends are like, we need to train. We need to make sure that they include Waterpolo, but we also need to make sure we're in the Olympics. Now at this point, Kelly is 19 years old.
Starting point is 00:15:37 So she's focused on spending time training for Waterpolo, but also spending time at the Manly Rugby Club. And that's when she notices a guy by the name of Duncan Gill's, a rugby player. He was hot. His dad was a doctor. He comes from a good family. His family all plays rugby. His brothers are pro athletes in rugby.
Starting point is 00:15:58 He's tall. He's built. He's got that rugby bod. He's handsome. And Kelly immediately likes him. Mainly because she felt like he was going to be a top dog one day. She's the type that's into guys that seem like they're going to be leaders one day. She's not into the ones that just kind of fade off in the
Starting point is 00:16:13 corner that do their own thing. No, she wants the best of the best and nothing less. So Duncan, he's really into her too. She's tall, athletic, blonde, ambitious, loves to party. So immediately they just start having sex, like from the get go. Now if you look up the stats on how many condoms the Olympic Games pass out to Olympians, it's out of this world. Like hundreds of thousands. Just for the Olympians, not for people watching, not for the spectators. No, we're a bunch of couch potatoes. These Olympians though, they have the stamina. I mean, this is no joke. It's probably marathons for them. This is probably their warm-up. I don't even know what to say. It's not even the main show. It's crazy. So Kelly would sneak
Starting point is 00:16:56 dunk it into her room. They would have sex. I mean, her mom knew what was happening. She still lived with her parents, but Sandy just kind of let it happen. Oddly, Kelly wasn't that close with her mom, they had a, what's described as a cold, weird, distant relationship, that's a lot of weird words. Sandy's favorite was her little son, that she just doated on him all the time, especially when Rob was out for business, you know, Kelly would bring home Duncan and they would just be having sex and I don't know how the star is lined. I don't know how this went down, but one day Rob comes home to find his precious daughter having sex.
Starting point is 00:17:29 I mean, he lost his marbles. He was about to beat people up, tackle people. His rugby was coming out. He's a police officer. This is like the worst combination ever. Okay, this is frightening. I'd be terrified. But eventually he comes to terms with it.
Starting point is 00:17:41 You know, my daughter's 19. Nothing's going to stop her from having sex. I think it also really helped because he really liked Duncan. This is exactly what they were looking for in a son-in-law. He's the perfect guy. They couldn't even, if they had to make up a fictional son-in-law, that was the perfect one.
Starting point is 00:17:58 It wouldn't be better than Duncan. No, it wouldn't be. He was up to power with their standards. So Duncan starts getting invited to all these family events, staying overnight a few times a week, but eventually the sex came to a stop because Kelly's friend had moved in, and now there's just no privacy between the two. But somehow, at 19 years old, she gets pregnant again. This time, instead of telling what happened, like she did with her last boyfriend, Adam,
Starting point is 00:18:25 she decides to not tell Duncan. Now, I don't know the reasoning behind this. Maybe she was worried he would scare him off. Maybe she felt like her relationship would never recover an abortion, because that's the one thing that led to the demise of her relationship with Adam, right? Instead, she acts like she's not pregnant. For nine months. She keeps party. She keeps going to clubs with her friends. She's not pregnant. For nine months. She keeps party.
Starting point is 00:18:45 She keeps going to clubs with her friends. She's taking shots. She's smoking cigarettes. She's literally training six times a week and doing cardio and doing extreme exercise that no pregnant person should be doing. I mean, light exercise is advised, especially if you've already been athletic, but not water polo, where people are literally tackling you. Duncan is going out with her every weekend. Nobody notices anything strange.
Starting point is 00:19:13 The only difference was that she had gained a little bit of weight, but she didn't look pregnant. I saw a picture, and the way that everyone describes it, and these are not my words, but when she gets pregnant She kind of gains weight to the sides Not necessarily out Okay, and her face doesn't look bloated at all I feel like most pregnant people I've seen you know that your face bloats naturally because I mean come on You're pregnant. You're making a human child inside of your belly. You can do whatever you want But yeah, she did not look pregnant in the picture So her friends
Starting point is 00:19:45 are gossiping a little bit. And honestly, this is very triggering if you've been bullied for your weight. But they would say things like, it's obvious she's letting herself go. I mean, she's always been so petite. What do you think happened? Her jeans don't even fit anymore. Did you see? Her crop top is so tight now. Do you think it's like happy relationship weight or something? Or do you think it's something else? Now the book says that it has a lot to do with sports culture like these athletes especially women if they gain weight I mean everyone notices even the coach notices this is athlete culture this is like you know kind of their job I guess that sounds
Starting point is 00:20:17 weird but you have to be a certain I don't know does that make sense? Yeah yeah physique. Yeah you have to be a certain physique and everybody notices these microchanges in your body because these are your teammates, these are your coaches, they see you nonstop, especially water polo. You're in like a, you know, a tight thinning swimsuit, a lot of your body is showing.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Exactly. So they would all whisper things behind their back, like do you think she's pregnant? Oh, so people do notice. Yeah, but they're like, I don't know if it's weight or pregnancy. Yeah. Like, it's not very obvious. But of course, nobody asked her straight up.
Starting point is 00:20:53 They just gossip behind her back. Because what are friends for? Her friends are really not nice people. I mean, neither is she, honestly, but they're the type of people to judge girls at the club for what they're wearing. Like, random strangers would buck by and they'd say things like, I wonder who she is going home with tonight. Can you believe her G-string is showing? I wouldn't be cut dead in that!
Starting point is 00:21:11 I don't need to dress to impress. Besides, if you try so hard, it's a clear sign that you have no self-respect. The hatred and rudeness might come from the fact that Duncan and the rugby boys, their boyfriends, were not above flirting with girls, dressed like that specifically, even though they're in relationships. So even if the girlfriends are in the other corner of the bar, they will be staring at other girls passing by, even talking about their bodies loudly, like pointing out which ones the hottest.
Starting point is 00:21:41 So they're all shit like, we bring girlfriend all together. Yes. So after this long night out, Kelly decides to head back to her house with a friend that's staying with her. Till this day, nobody knows that she's pregnant for the second time, okay? Nobody knows. And she's dreading the nighttime routine. She has to take turn showering with her friend. She has to change clothes around her friend, which is hard because she might see all the weight that she's gained. She might see that Kelly can't fit into any of her clothes, even her pajamas because they're
Starting point is 00:22:10 too tight. But Kelly's trying to give herself some slack though. She is 7 months pregnant after all. Out there drinking, clubbing, nobody knows. Even till the last week of her pregnancy, she was still heavily training, doing intense swimming lessons, being in games, high contact sports, she would rush out of the pool and wrap herself in a towel so nobody could see her bump, but she keeps thinking to herself, what if she goes into labor during a game?
Starting point is 00:22:37 What if something happens during a game? Her teammates also keep forcing her to drink after they win games and she can't say no, because that would be too obvious. She's gained weight. I mean Kelly's not dumb. She knew that there were rumors circulating that she's pregnant. She knew that at the clubs or during games people brushed past her and they probably felt her bump. Let's be real. But hopefully it'll all be over soon, right? Only a few more months and then it happened. Duncan comes to her door one day. She's heavily pregnant, okay?
Starting point is 00:23:07 And he says, hey, are your parents home? Can I talk to you alone? Maybe in the backyard? Look, something happened at the freshwater surf life saving carnival. That's a really long carnival name. Something happened at the carnival. It's a weekend long party centered around a rowing competition. Usually Kelly goes, okay, to watch her friends row. She's got a lot of, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:28 athletic friends. But this year she's exhausted from being pregnant, from hiding her pregnancy. She just wanted to rest. She's tired. And then afterwards everyone wants to go drink and she would have no excuse. So it's just better not to go to the carnival. But Duncan still went. Kelly's friends were all there and one of them Let's call her Brittany. Brittany was there. Brittany was a catch. All the guys were after her at the festival. She was well-built, lean, blonde, and she was recently chosen to Represent Australia in water polo games. She was on the Australian team. At this point, Kelly was not. She was playing for Manly, but she wasn't paying for the nation
Starting point is 00:24:05 So everyone loves playing oh she was paying for Manly No, she was playing for Manly, but not the nation so everybody loves Brittany They thought that she was smoking hot including ding ding ding Duncan So that night Duncan was keeping her company, you know because she's so lonely from all the guys sitting on her talking to Brittany drinking some beers with her and And so Kelly I I leaned in and I kissed her and she was drunk too I know she's your friend, but she didn't push me away and one thing led to another and we went back to my room I just I wanted to tell you first because out of respect for you everybody did see us make out and I thought that I should be the one I he's
Starting point is 00:24:49 cringing because this guy is something else. This guy's kind of a tool. I thought I should be the one to tell you. You know be a man about it. I'm just being honest with you. Kelly's crying. She's sobbing and Duncan is chilling. He was kind of over Kelly. I mean they were, yeah, they were having fun. Sure, they talked about their future together, but they were both athletes. They had their own dreams. They didn't have time or the want to settle down to lay accomplish their goals and besides, he's hot. A lot of girls like him. And does he know that she's pregnant?
Starting point is 00:25:22 He heard rumors going around that she's pregnant, but it's not true. She's on the pill so she can skip periods for better training. Is she not pregnant? There's no way. Yeah, she's getting way. She's letting herself go. That's what everyone says. That's what Duncan thinks, but no.
Starting point is 00:25:38 That's definitely not my baby in that belly. Definitely not. Yeah, just wait till you- just wait till the plot twist, okay? So Duncan, just like his games, he wanted to move on to the next one. The next trophy. This guy's a douche, but Kelly on the other hand was more in love with him than ever. He was hot, he's an athlete, his family had connections, and she's pregnant. She thought that he was going to propose soon, not cheat on her. So Duncan's standing there watching his girlfriend sobbing and he kind of sees it.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Ah, yeah she is a little bloated. Oh maybe she did put on some of your pounds. I mean I still care about her though. Yeah this guy's an absolute arse, okay. She's gained weight but I still care about her though. Can you believe I want a punch him? But she's just not that hot anymore. I mean, Duncan can get the hottest girls in town.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Instead, he's stuck in this relationship, but he can't break up with her. Because her dad still has some influence in the rugby world. And he had a very small say in who gets chosen to rep Australia in the Wallaby team. And Duncan has a lot of pressure from his family. His brothers went pro by the age of 23. Duncan's about to be 23 and he's still trying to make it.
Starting point is 00:26:49 He needs to keep up, he needs to outdo his brothers. The problem is, like he is good, but he's not good enough and he knows it. So Kelly's dad is rooting for him right now for being with his daughter and that's what he needs. So he shuts his mouth up. He doesn't break up with her, even though he wanted to, but he also doesn't beg for her forgiveness.
Starting point is 00:27:07 He also doesn't beg her to give him another chance. He just waits for Kelly to stop crying. Pat's around the shoulder and she says, you're not getting away from me that easily. And he just thums up and walks away, gets into his truck and drives off. So I guess they're still dating. Meanwhile, Brittany is blowing up Kelly's phone. Listen, I'm so sorry. I feel so bad. I'm so embarrassed. I'm mad at myself. I can't believe I did this to you and in front of everyone, I'm so sorry. I promise nothing else happened though. Yes, I did fall asleep in his room, but that's just me being drunk and tired. You know how I am. Seriously, nothing happened. We made out and then. You know how I am. Seriously, nothing happened.
Starting point is 00:27:45 We made out and then I fell asleep on his bed. Now, this is fascinating. This is riveting because Duncan is going around telling everyone that he had sex with Brittany. But Kelly trusts Brittany. That's the thing. She trusts Brittany more than her friend. She's known Brittany for years.
Starting point is 00:28:00 Longer than she's known Duncan. And she must stop. Yeah, this was mean. This was evil, but she was telling the truth. Kelly knew it, which I don't know what's worse than why is her boyfriend going around lying, saying that he slept with another girl and bragging about it. I think she also just trying to be in denial. Yeah. Because she wants to stay in this relationship. Yeah. So when Kelly shows up at practice, you know, Brittany's there and everyone's staring at her because, you know, they all saw.
Starting point is 00:28:28 They all saw Brittany making out with her boyfriend, but that's not really what they're focusing on anymore. Oh, they could focus on was, did she get weight? Why is she walking around with the towel? Something weird's going on. Even Coach David couldn't help but notice. He was more nervous about how it's going to affect her performance more than anything, but everybody was just kind of eyeing her and then eyeing each other and then doing the eat what's going on, luck. Of course, none of these people are just going to straight up ask her.
Starting point is 00:29:00 I mean, if she was, she would tell us, right? There's no way that she's going to keep playing waterpullo that would be insane. That's so dangerous for her and the child, if she was, she would tell us, right? There's no way that she's gonna keep playing waterpullo that would be insane. That's so dangerous for her and the child if she's pregnant, that's reckless. And she's playing pretty well. I mean, her performance hasn't been suffering. Anyway, we gotta focus on the big game tonight.
Starting point is 00:29:17 It's Balmain or Balmain. I don't know. Okay, is it the designer? Is it a town? We'll never know. Balmain versus Sydney University. We need to know. Balmón vs Sydney University. We need to win. Everyone's gonna be there to watch.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Even Duncan, his brothers, Kelly's parents are gonna be there too. Even though the team loses. Everyone is so proud of Kelly. She killed it. She did so well. Let's go and get drinks at the bar. They start drinking.
Starting point is 00:29:40 It's gonna be a wild night. And during the party, Kelly goes missing. Hey Duncan, have you seen Kelly? No, I'm sure she's here somewhere. You know how she is. But the night passes, no sign of her. Duncan's not worried. The next day passes, no sign of Kelly. Duncan's not worried.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Even when one day turns into several days, guess it's not worried. Duncan. This guy is something else I tell you. I don't know if he would have even cared to find out that Kelly had just given birth in the hospital. So at the party, she starts feeling the contractions and she knew what was happening. So she's going into labor. She snuck out of the party, got into a taxi to the hospital by herself, surrounded by
Starting point is 00:30:22 doctors. Nobody to hold her hand, nobody to hold her hair back, nobody to tell her it's gonna be okay. Kelly gives birth alone. Why would you break into these apartments? For money, for drugs, whatever was in there. Why aren't you afraid of getting caught at doing this? No.
Starting point is 00:30:40 Who's gonna catch us? What a police. It was the height of the crack era, and instead of locking up drug dealers, some New York City cops had become them. I would suit up in my uniform and we're gonna want some drug dealers, and I know how to do it really well. This is the inside story of the biggest police corruption
Starting point is 00:31:04 scandal in NYPD history and the investigation that uncovered it all. Did you consider yourself a rat? 100%. I saved my soul just like everybody else does. Listen to and follow the set, an Odyssey originals documentary podcast series available now in the Odyssey app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your shows. I'm not a big guy man, but I love being that dirty mother f***er.
Starting point is 00:31:30 I mean, I do feel for her, she was really sad. In the hospital, she could see all these other new moms that would have like an army of people just coming and bringing them flowers, bringing them whatever they needed, food, going over to comfort her. She was completely alone. Beth, that's probably one of the loneliest moments. Yeah. That's so sad.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I imagine how many people go through that too. I just start crying, mid-party cast, because of this. But the nurses, you know, they try to make up for it. They're super nice to her. I mean, they're worried. After giving birth, she was uncontrollably crying, like she was sobbing so hard that her body was shaking. Yes, most new moms cry, don't give me wrong. Giving birth is traumatic. Is it a thing that's beautiful and the outcome is worth everything and more? Yes, but it's rough. Okay, we, that's not sugarcoded. You're pushing an entire child out of you. Maybe you're being cut open to take this baby out of you.
Starting point is 00:32:27 It's traumatic, your hormones are all over the place. Yes, you love your baby, but you also probably just experienced one of life's harshest, most physically draining pains you will ever experience. It's a lot. But Kelly's cry was something else. It was just a little bit alarming. She refused to talk. She couldn't console her. They had no other choice but to call in a social worker. They
Starting point is 00:32:48 didn't know. Maybe she had severe postpartum depression. Maybe she was going to do something dangerous. So she comes in and she sits down next to Kelly. Please, what's going on, Kelly? You can talk to me. I'm a social worker. And in between stops, Kelly said, I want to put my baby up for adoption. And the social worker was taken aback. I mean, nothing was wrong with it. She wasn't judging Kelly. This is one of the hardest decisions you might have to make in your life.
Starting point is 00:33:16 But with today's technology, she was thinking, well, with Plan B, with abortions, with contraception options, before you even get pregnant, following through with an unwanted pregnancy was in like very, very limited at this point. Unless you had a family that you knew wanted your child, unless you were a surrogate, I mean, following through with an unwanted pregnancy was very, very rare at this point. So she was kind of shocked and she said, oh, are you sure this is the right choice? Yes, I'm an elite water polo player. In fact, I'm gonna play for Australia soon.
Starting point is 00:33:49 I also wanna play Australia in the 2000 Olympics. I know that women's water polo isn't an Olympic sport yet, but we're doing everything we can to change that. I can look after a child and train for the Olympics at the same time. Okay, Kelly, get some rest and I'll have someone from the adoption agency stop by tomorrow. Wait, I need to leave tomorrow night though. I need to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow night and I need to leave the baby. I can't take the baby.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Wait, Kelly, why do you have to leave so sudden? I mean, we need to figure this out first. It might take a while. It's not an easy process. I have to go talk to the father of the child about the adoption. He moved to Perth three weeks ago I need to go there and I need to tell him Okay, well, let me see what we can do. Let me try to see if we can get the adoption agency to come out quicker and You can tell her what happened
Starting point is 00:34:38 So they asked her tell us what happened Kelly Well, Duncan and I were living together for a year when I felt pregnant. It wasn't planned. My parents know when they're super disappointed in me. As soon as I found out that I was pregnant, I knew that I wanted to put my baby up for adoption, because I didn't want to have an abortion, and I'm just not ready to be a parent. Besides, I need to study. I want to pursue my water polo career, and being pregnant was the only reason I wasn't
Starting point is 00:35:03 selected to play for Australia last year. Okay, okay. So here's what's gonna happen, Kelly. You'll go home, the child will be placed in short-term foster care, but you need to give us written consent to have your baby be adopted. We have a window of 30 days to change your mind. If you still want to go forward with it, your child will be taken out of foster care and placed with adoptive parents.
Starting point is 00:35:25 The only other thing is, we will need to get the father's permission to, but the address in the number you gave us, I mean, he's not answering. Okay, well, I'll try to call him and see what he says, but I don't know if he will. Weeks go by without his response. Kelly was emotional. She kept saying, he's in Scotland for his competition And it's a nightmare. I just feel like he doesn't care about me He said he doesn't want to speak to me until I clean up this mess
Starting point is 00:35:51 I'm not receiving any support from him. He says that I tricked him He says that he doesn't want to be involved in the adoption, and I just feel like I feel like I've let everyone down No, no Kelly. You don't don't say that you didn't let us down No, no, Kelly, don't say that. You didn't let us down. Kelly does visit her baby in foster care a few times and she seems to love her child. There's even a photo of the two of them together when she went to visit. So Kelly meets the adoptive parents of her first child. She brings the mom yellow roses and they both sob in each other's arms and Kelly leans down and brings out a toy for the baby. And she says, this one's for you little one.
Starting point is 00:36:25 It's her mere daddy Duncan. And with that, she had her baby adopted. Now, I guess the adoption agency didn't really care for the dad signature, because it just seemed like he was in the picture. They would rather this baby go to a loving family that can provide than spend days and weeks if not months hunting down the father for a signature. He doesn't even want the baby, that's clear he's not part of the baby's life.
Starting point is 00:36:47 So three weeks later after this adoption, well, training starts again. Kelly is back to her normal size wearing two pieces, no towel around her waist. She's ready to go. Training was going to be intense. Three mornings a week from 5.30am to 7am, and then 3 afternoons a week from 6 to 7.30pm, and on top of that she's got to do weightlifting and cardio sessions at the gym. I mean, this is how toxic the situation was at home though, so I really can't even get mad at her at this. Kelly's on top of the world. She's so happy. Literally a weight has been lifted off her shoulders, but obviously she's traumatized. She just went through that all by herself.
Starting point is 00:37:26 I mean, secrets are really damaging, especially when you're this young and it's this big of a secret and you're just alone. She's just trying to move on. And one day her dad and Duncan are sitting talking about rugby when she walks in and her dad looks at her and says, hey, you're looking beautiful, Kelly. Don't put on all that weight again now. She starts shaking. She rushes out of the room completely right in the face. And the two guys are just casual. They didn't even sweat it.
Starting point is 00:37:53 To make my others worse, at parties, Duncan would just vanish. And when Kelly would ask her friends, they would tell her, oh, um, we think he already laughed. And she would giggle. That little sneaky didn't even tell me that he was leaving. And she would giggle. That little snake, he didn't even tell me that he was leaving and she would try to laugh, but nobody wanted to make eye contact with her. Because it's most likely that he left with another girl while his girlfriend is there at the bar. Are you kidding me?
Starting point is 00:38:17 Are you kidding me? It all kind of started because he went pro. I mean, sure, he's not being paid like a lot of the pros, but he's a pro still, which means he's a big-bollar, shot-collar. He's a pro athlete. And as a pro athlete, don't you think you deserve more than one partner? Essentially, it's like in their contract, you gotta read the fine print. If that's not a red flag, Kelly and Brittany are trying to get back to being close again, but Duncan is making it hard because he still keeps insisting and bragging and telling anyone who will listen.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Sure, I'm dating Kelly, but guess what? I'd sex with our friend, Brett Neh. I mean, I don't even know how to describe that type of behavior. So around this time, everyone starts whispering again. What the hell is going on? Did you see that? She's wearing her tracksuit over her swim clothes again. It's the damn towel again. She's got the towel on. Let's go underwater, put on her goggles. Let's just see. What the hell is she hiding? And they come back up and the girls, they take off their goggles and their eyes are wide and they're nodding
Starting point is 00:39:21 at each other. You think so? Yeah. She definitely looks pregnant. For the third time? This would be Kelly's third pregnancy. She checked herself into a hospital alone again, and she said, Doctor, I'm two weeks past my due date and my back pain is unbearable, please help me.
Starting point is 00:39:40 They did not help her. They were not gonna induce her, so they said no. She goes to another hospital further away. Nobody knew her there, especially the doctors. So she's there to have her third secret baby. Now think about it. She's working part-time as a coach, training for the senior team of WaterPolo, studying in college. Oh, and drinking non-stop on the weekends. And now she's out to have her third secret baby. Second. Well, I mean, yeah, second baby she's giving birth to. Yeah, this is her third pregnancy.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Right. Right, now the whole thing is strange for the staff. Kelly claimed that she had a midwife taking care of her, but she needs to give birth. Now the hospital staff, they were kind of thrown off by this because typically when you have a home birth and you have a midwife that's going to facilitate all of that, they are possessive over their patients. Like these midwives will fight to the death, will be there breathing down the nurse's neck because they're the midwife.
Starting point is 00:40:34 So, I mean, this just didn't make any sense. The midwife would be at the hospital yelling at the nurses or at least blowing up their phone right now, but nothing. So strange. On top of that, Kelly was complaining of pain, but she wasn't in labor. So they kind of sent her home. She immediately comes back the next morning,
Starting point is 00:40:51 doctors, you got to induce me, please. I'm in so much pain, it's way past my due date. So they're frustrated, they don't have any of her records. What about blood screenings? We need the results for your baby, all the tests that you were supposed to do. Kelly, is there any reason you're here alone? Oh yeah, my partner is a professional footballer and he's overseas right now.
Starting point is 00:41:11 He's playing. It's tough being with him, I tell you. It's really tough, but I need to give birth to this baby. So they induce her. And that day, just before 8 p.m., Kelly gives birth to a baby girl named Tegan Lane. Now the doctors and nurses were looking at each other very suspiciously because the baby was born two weeks premature at 38 weeks. Not two weeks later than her due date like Kelly had acclaimed. So two weeks before it is still considered a full term pregnancy.
Starting point is 00:41:39 So I mean the baby is fine, the baby is healthy thankfully. So that's not the most alarming thing in the world, but it's just a little strange. Now this is going to sound a little bit random, but it might be important later. There were a lot of moms giving birth from all over the world, really, there. China, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Fiji, Vietnam. Kelly was one of the two white women giving birth. The other white woman had given birth to a stillborn. Kind of pertinent later. So Kelly gives birth, but she's alone. So the nurses decide to call in a social worker. Why are you alone?
Starting point is 00:42:10 My boyfriend's name is Duncan, and he's overseas right now, so are my parents. They're going to be back later this week, and I have a friend that's going to stay with me until then. And then in a few weeks, I'm moving with Duncan to London, and we're going to live there for a few years. And honestly, the social worker didn't suspect a thing. She felt bad for Kelly. She's thinking, timing's a bitch.
Starting point is 00:42:29 To give birth while everyone that you love is out of the country, I mean, imagine that look. There were no obvious signs of depression. Nothing. She seemed normal. So after the interview with the social worker, Kelly requests to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow, which is pretty soon, but it's not alarming. I mean, new moms really don't want to stay in the hospital.
Starting point is 00:42:48 They want to be with their child, they want to bond with their child, go back to their comfortable bed and relax, which you really can because you're a new mom. But, you know, at least have like two seconds of your own mattress, just being a quiet house. So they say, oh, it's a little soon, but, okay, yeah, we'll get you ready to leave for tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:43:04 You just have to fill out a bunch of these forms before you leave with all of this. Now, as soon as she's cleared, Kelly heads out with her baby, without telling the nurses and without filling the rest of her documents out other than one Medicare one that was required. She didn't take the baby kit that the hospital's provide. She didn't ask for a taxi to be called. Nobody picked her up. She just took the child and slipped out of the hospital.
Starting point is 00:43:27 I mean, they were frustrated, they need to run blood tests on the baby, they need to weigh her, ID, her footprint, her, Kelly knew this, the nurse told her, hey, these are the list of things we gotta do before you guys are free to go. We should be able to get it done before tomorrow. So the nurse panics and checks her file, and another nurse had noted, Kelly's planning on having a midwife from the hospital come out to do the test Okay, I mean that's fine. I guess She didn't know that baby Tegan would never be seen again It would remain a mystery to this day
Starting point is 00:44:00 So the day of Kelly's discharge the day that she leaves the hospital. There's this huge wedding. The groom is a former coach for a local rugby team, and you know, these are mainly Duncan's friends, but Kelly went in as his plus one, the day that she was discharged from the hospital. She's sitting there, wearing heels, enjoying her life. No baby. Crazy. No baby, no sign, no indication, no hint at all whatsoever that she decided baby. Two days ago. Two days later, she phoned the hospital.
Starting point is 00:44:29 Hello, this is Kelly Lane. I just gave birth last week at this hospital. Ah yes, you do have a visit from the home from the midwife service that we have at the hospital. We just need to do a heel prick blood sample from the baby. It's important, it's a routine test to check if the little one is feeding, peeing, and pooping okay. Yeah, I was gonna call about that. Could you guys actually cancel my home visit? My midwife and that I've chosen, you know, is gonna take care of all of those things.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Huh? Um... Okay, yeah sure, Kelly. I'll cancel on your request. And in a few months, Kelly goes to another wedding with Duncan. This time it's Duncan's brother's wedding, and it just feels like the whole family is loving Kelly, they like her, they accept her, and the next year, after giving birth to Tegan, with Tegan nowhere to be found, no adoption, nothing. Just vanished.
Starting point is 00:45:21 Kelly's trying to focus on her sports, but she's not doing well. She's not chosen. Kelly's trying to focus on her sports, but she's not doing well. She's not chosen for the World Cup. She finds herself sitting poolside cheering on her colleagues more than actually playing, and then it happens. The 2000 Olympics announces Woman's Water Polo will be included in The Olympics, and she's thinking, that's my goal. That's what I did all of this for. I had two secret babies so that I could go to the Olympics. Meanwhile Duncan's not doing great. His contract doesn't get renewed.
Starting point is 00:45:53 Nobody wants to pick him for their teams. He's starting to look at other countries of whom I want him. And he finally finds a place but now he's got to go overseas. And Callie was stoked. Yeah, they're going to have a long distance relationship but she's busy with the Olympics anyway. They still love each other and he's gonna propose soon. This was her being overly optimistic because the minute that Duncan was on foreign land in the United Kingdom he made it his mission.
Starting point is 00:46:18 His mission to look for pretty girls. He even starts seeing someone seriously. More seriously than when you're seeing Kelly. Let's call her Tina. He like moves in with Tina immediately. He's like this the one. So Duncan returns to Manly to play rugby and he sits Kelly down and he says listen, I found someone. I think we need a break up. It's getting serious with me and her. He didn't even tell Kelly that he was going to play for Manly again, and that Tina was moving to Australia with him. Kelly's devastated. And then she finds out that she's not making it to the Olympics, and she's beyond devastate, she's depressed, and she's trying to focus on the better things in life. Her coaching job, she's going to
Starting point is 00:47:00 try to be a pea teacher when she grows up. Her friend's getting married. She's gonna be a bridesmaid But you know, there are all these happy things, but her friends notice it. You know, I think it's such a depression I mean, maybe it's because she's not training as much anymore. I mean also the breakup. I'm sure it doesn't help. I think it's all the weddings She deserves to relax and let loose a little don't you think? I I think it's all the weddings. She deserves to relax and let loose a little, don't you think? I don't know, but I can't help but think. She looks pregnant. They didn't know that their best friend was pregnant for the fourth time.
Starting point is 00:47:36 Still Duncan? Well, we'll see. So Kelly finds out that she's six and a half months pregnant. She finds out six and a half months in. Listen, I don't know, okay. I think athletes might have a lot of skipped periods. Maybe that's why, but that's a lot of months. She doesn't want to give birth the third time.
Starting point is 00:47:55 That sounds miserable, but she's right at the cutoff time for an abortion. Not only that, but she has to fly to Brisbane to terminate her pregnancy. And so she flies to get there by herself and when she's there she's stressed probably to press and the doctor sit her down. I'm sorry Miss Lane but you're over 25 weeks pregnant we cannot carry out this procedure. So she's done. She's numb she finds herself flying back home by herself and it's slowly sinking in. She's going to have to give birth again for the third time alone. A few months later she finds herself at ride hospital. She's been there before. So her last birth,
Starting point is 00:48:33 she had birth given birth at Auburn Hospital, but remember she went to that hospital and was like, can you induce me? And they said, no. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that was ride hospital. So she says, sorry, I'm alone. It's just me. I live in London with my partner, and I flew out here to give birth. My whole family is still in London, so yeah. So this is your second child? Kelly didn't realize that her records from Auburn Hospital were coming with her.
Starting point is 00:48:58 Now, I don't know why her first records didn't come for the first child, but they just thought that this was her second child. So she says, yeah, my daughter is here with me and Sydney. She flew out with me, but no other members of my family are here. This is important later. She says, my daughter flew out with me. Two Sydney, nobody else came.
Starting point is 00:49:19 So the nurse is writing all these answers down. Do you want to breastfeed the baby? I'm not sure. I have no problems with breastfeeding. I breastfed my daughter for six months, but I don't know if I want to breastfeed the baby? I'm not sure. I have no problems with breastfeeding. I breastfed my daughter for six months, but I don't know if I want to do it again. Okay, now who's been looking after your prenatal care? The Royal Women's Hospital in Brisbane? Now the nurses, they call that hospital. There's no record of Kelly Lane there. What the heck? But Kelly goes into labor. What are they going to do? Not let her give birth, so Kelly gives birth to a very, very healthy baby, and she's a bit
Starting point is 00:49:48 teary eyed, but she's holding and cuddling her child, she's breastfeeding well. And while she's laying there with a newborn in her arms, she calls her good friend, let's call her Linda. Also, we're doing a lot of fake names because a lot of these people don't want to be connected with this case. It's a really, it was a really high profile case in Australia that was incredibly scandalous. Especially because you know when you have friends and family and everyone, the whole world was asking, how did you not know? You know, so of course they're not trying to put their names out there. So Linda, she calls her best friend Linda and is like, listen, what are you doing? Oh nothing, I think I'm going to just go buy some new luggage for the trip to the United
Starting point is 00:50:27 Kingdom. Oh, I hear that too! Okay, well talk to you later, bye! Just a super casual, upbeat conversation about going on vacation. And then immediately afterwards, Kelly calls an adoption agency. She doesn't go through a nurse instead she calls up Angel Care, a different agency from the one that she had used for her first secret baby. She says, I want to put my child up for adoption. The baby's father has left me. He found out that I was pregnant. He doesn't want to be with me. I live in London,
Starting point is 00:50:58 but I flew out to Australia to have a baby. I'm all alone, and I have to go back to London for work soon. Immediately, the adoption agency worker shows up. What's going on? Kelly's stopping. It's hard being away from family. I just don't want the hospital staff to know what I'm doing. They're going to judge me. I know it.
Starting point is 00:51:14 Just like the way that my parents judge me. They were disappointed in me. They were ashamed of me. I found out that I was pregnant at five months, and I immediately told my boyfriend Duncan. Not that it makes a difference. I couldn't even consider even having an abortion. I'm going to have five months and I immediately told my boyfriend Duncan not that it makes a difference. I couldn't even consider even having an abortion.
Starting point is 00:51:28 I wish I was able to keep my baby, but I can't. You promise the hospital won't know what I'm doing? Yeah, don't worry, Kelly. We will be very discreet. Don't worry. And the social worker notices that Kelly is caring for her child, has formed a bond, cares about the child's well-being, even left if presence behind for the child and the foster parents. Now the child is placed in foster care, but there's still a lot that needs to be done.
Starting point is 00:51:50 Like before the baby can formally be adopted, it's about 30 days of just intense paperwork. It's not easy. And Kelly's making it hard. She always has her phone off, she never picks up, she gives the wrong address to the workers, she won't show up for these important meetings, won't take their calls. She's complaining to the adoption agent whenever she does get her on the phone. I just don't feel like I know Duncan anymore. He used to tell me how wonderful I was, now he cut me off from our joint account.
Starting point is 00:52:19 I don't have my money in there. We used to do everything together, but he's just changed. I hear as a new girlfriend already some girl named Tina. So the adoption agency worker Virginia, she's just listening to this like okay, I mean what? She's complaining, dunking this, dunking that, I can't really talk, I can't help you, I can't do the paperwork right now because dunking this, dunking that. So the foster care agreement for Kelly is about to expire because remember it's only a month. They have to finalize the rest of the paperwork. Virginia starts reaching out to other local hospitals and that's when she
Starting point is 00:52:51 finds a record of Kelly being pregnant not too long ago. So she's trying to feel a little bit suspicious of Kelly. But she wants to help. She wants to help any mom regardless of how they become pregnant and why they want to put their baby up for adoption. You know, she doesn't care. The very last day before the foster care agreement expires, Kelly is going to meet up with Virginia with her information to finalize the papers, which doesn't show up. That means her child has quite literally been abandoned and is stranded with new legal status.
Starting point is 00:53:21 And all Virginia, the worker can do is called CPS. She tells John everything. The C the worker can do is called CPS. She tells John everything, the CPS worker's name is John, and he's thinking, yeah sure Virginia thinks Kelly's nice, so it seems yeah she brings gifts, she cries during visits with her baby, but at the end of the day, this is a woman who was abandoned her child, and it seems like she did it intentionally. John is able to access records to see if she gave birth a few years ago. She truly hasn't been to London at all. They look up her passport records,
Starting point is 00:53:49 she's not living in London, that's for sure. That means she's lying about that, which is fine, whatever. But there's no record of her second child being put up for adoption. So she just has a child? But this one's going up for, I mean, it's so weird. So Virginia keeps trying to talk to Kelly, but she's just not having it. Listen, I'm still upset. I have to fly to London because he's frozen our account. I don't have money. He's the worst. Why is he doing this to me?
Starting point is 00:54:15 Anyway, gotta go. And Virginia's frustrated. She decides to do some sleuthing. She realizes that Duncan used to play for a manly rugby team. She remembered, you know, Kelly, I told her this, but not anymore, because he's a London. But maybe they have his contact. She reaches out to Manly and she's shocked to hear, oh, he's incidding, not in London.
Starting point is 00:54:34 He's actually playing for Manly this year. What? So Kelly's lying about him being in London and then living together in London and what? Okay, well, that's not my personal problem but I still need his information because I need his signature to put the child up for adoption. Do you know how to reach out to him? She writes Duncan a letter. It just pretty much said please contact me immediately regarding Kelly Lane.
Starting point is 00:54:59 She didn't say she was part of the adoption agency shouldn't say any of that. And the letter is super confusing for Duncan. He's living with his new girlfriend Tina. He's back in Manley. He's completely forgotten about Kelly. What are you talking about? It's so vague. Why would this random woman named Virginia want to talk to me? Nothing about anything.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Then his friend shows up. Hey Duncan, can I talk to you real quick? You know how I live in your old house? You rented it out to me? Well, I just saw, I got something in the mail. So weird shit's been going down. I got a letter from a woman named Virginia and it's a poll rate of a child.
Starting point is 00:55:34 And on the back of the poll rate, it just says Kelly Lane. That's weird, no, is that your ex girlfriend? And then on top of that, a nurse recently knocked on the door and asked me if Kelly was home. A nurse. That's weird, no. So finally, Kelly comes to talk to Virginia. She had gotten word that Duncan got a strange letter
Starting point is 00:55:52 in the mail and she's mad. Virginia's like, listen, Kelly, I think you're lying to me. You're not staring at the address that you gave on file, which was Duncan's old address. Oh yeah, Virginia, not anymore. My so-called friends and roommates, they threw me out once they found out that I put my baby up for adoption. I come home one day, all my stuff was out on the streets, now I'm staying with my other
Starting point is 00:56:12 friend, Linda. Listen, Kelly, I hope that you're not feeling pressured to go ahead with this adoption. No, I don't. I really want to go through with it. And then, all hell breaks loose. A few days later Duncan calls Virginia and he's beyond shocked. He can't even talk. He's screaming what? What that doesn't even make sense? How is she pregnant? She's never been pregnant. We broke up more than
Starting point is 00:56:35 a year ago. Yeah, I mean, I was overseas for sure, but I wasn't in London and I'm definitely not with Kelly. And he's trying to call Kelly blowing up her phone. What the hell is this? Finally they meet up Kelly and Duncan but also Tina and she's like listen guys There's no baby even if there was one you're not the father Duncan And he's like I know there's a baby and she's like okay, you're right. There's a baby, but you're not the father But that's that's not what you said. Yeah, I mean it's so clear exactly So Virginia calls Kelly and she's Kelly's not what you said. Yeah, I mean it's so weird. Exactly. So Virginia calls Kelly, and she's, Kelly's not even ashamed. She just says, well I guess you know now. Duncan's not the father.
Starting point is 00:57:10 I mean I guess it would have been better if I had broken the news first. He was pretty mad, but whatever. Kelly, do you think he is the right to be mad? Yes, but I felt that if I told him the truth, no one would even help me. Kelly, I just, I feel sad that you felt like you had to lie to me. You've had so many opportunities to tell me the truth. I'm literally just here to help. I don't care how you became pregnant.
Starting point is 00:57:35 I know, I wanted to tell you the truth every single time, but you kept asking me questions about Duncan, so I just felt like I had to go more and more into this lie and... I don't know, where do we go from here? Well, how about a fresh start? Tell me the truth Kelly just tell me the truth So they agreed to meet the next day and this is where it gets weird Kelly didn't even seem embarrassed at all Not even remotely ashamed or awkward that she had lied and she had gotten caught at it There were no good real reasons on why she lied about Duncan being the father
Starting point is 00:58:02 I mean, it was just so strange. Virginia was concerned for her mental health. If she were to cancel the adoption, Virginia did not think Kelly is capable of caring for a child. She asked, why did you lie about Duncan being the dad? Well, I thought it'd be better for my child to know that they came from a long-term relationship, not that I hardly know the dad.
Starting point is 00:58:22 And yeah, I'm embarrassed. It was a one night stand. What if one day your child found out, after thinking for their whole lives that Duncan is their dad, then they find out that Duncan is not their biological dad? What would you do that? Who's the father, Kelly? It's a guy who dumped me when he found out
Starting point is 00:58:39 that I was pregnant. His name is Adam, the name of her first boyfriend. He's a banker that works in London. I hardly know him. I was there with a friend in London and he had a one-night stand. And it kind of, you know, turned into something else, but he dumped me. It was very casual. So she's listening to all of this. And Virginia damn well knows that she's lying. You don't live in London. Kelly, does your baby have any brothers or sisters? No. So this is your first child. Yes.
Starting point is 00:59:13 Listen, I know that you must be under a lot of stress and I think that you need to seek psychological evaluation. If you want to continue with the adoption process, just let me know. It can still go ahead, but your baby will become a ward of the state, and you won't be able to choose the parents, and your baby has already bonded a lot with the foster family. I mean, we need to figure this out. So somehow, they were able to do it, where Kelly
Starting point is 00:59:34 was going to finish up the papers without the father on file. But it got strange, because the CPS worker confirmed, Kelly had put up a kid for adoption. So now Virginia finds a record that she had given birth a few years ago to a baby girl, but CPS is confirming there kid for adoption. So now Virginia finds a record that she had given birth a few years ago to a baby girl. But CPS is confirming there was an adoption. So both of them, with this miscommunication think, that Kelly only had one child and it was placed in adoption. They did not know that a full-on child was missing right now. So Virginia moves on, but John the CPS worker gets word,
Starting point is 01:00:03 that Kelly did not give birth just once. She gave birth twice, so he's thinking, wait a minute, but I only found adoption records for just one of the children. So where's the other child? He calls her up and says, hey, Kelly, I just want to clarify some things, some from CPS. Did you give birth in 1995? Yes, I did.
Starting point is 01:00:23 And where is that child now? I had a place that child for adoption. What about in 1996? Did you give birth? No, I did not. This is a lie. Are you sure you didn't give birth in 1996? I'm positive.
Starting point is 01:00:39 Kelly, I have the hospital records right in front of me and I have no choice but to call the cops. You're lying. And that's when she switches her tone. She's like, please don't tell anyone about the case. No, not even the cops. Tell me first, please. I can reach out to Virginia. Listen, let me clarify everything. So she hangs up and she writes this long letter to Virginia. The whole conversation is in the book, but it's a super rambly one. Virginia, you were the first person in a long time that reached out to me to help me without making me feel like I was being judged. Over the last few weeks, my main concern was making sure my baby was happy and safe with
Starting point is 01:01:14 the loving and secure home. My life for the last six years has been an eye-mare. And one that I've had to live by mainly myself. I've been let down so many times by people whom I thought it loved me And who I thought would support me, but obviously I was wrong. My family let me down. They disowned me. Yes, I've had three babies. The second one Teigen lives with a family in Perth, Australia. I haven't talked to them in forever. I'm not able to give you many details because I'm not sure of them myself. If my story isn't unusual enough already, I already know you probably can't believe it, but I know that somehow you know. You know that I'm being honest with you. I'm aware that this does not have anything to do with my first or third baby's placement, and it's really not your issue, but I feel like you should know. And perhaps you could pass the details on to John from CPI's.
Starting point is 01:02:08 I'm miserable Virginia, everyone let me down, but I love my job. It's the only thing that I love. I would never want to break the trust of my students. Before all of this, I was actually a very honest and trustworthy person. Just makes me sick to see that I've changed. You're probably thinking, why did I do all of this? I just didn't have support any time I was in this situation. I felt isolated and alone and people dropped off me when they realized that I was going
Starting point is 01:02:34 to relinquish the babies and how could I do it? Society says that this is wrong. Society says that people who do this must be mad, slutty or cruel and I just, I don't agree. Being able to give a beautiful, healthy child is a great gift. Being able to give someone else the opportunity when they can't. Have a baby. Is a gift as well.
Starting point is 01:02:54 I don't think my behavior is actually that bad. It's just the secrecy and dishonesty that came with it. I'm just always under immense stress. I always feel sick. I only sleep 2-3 hours a night and I'm just always under immense stress. I always feel sick. I only sleep two to three hours a night, and I'm always on edge. I guess I knew all along that I would come out in the open, and in some ways, I'm glad that it has.
Starting point is 01:03:14 It's given me some sort of platform to rebuild from it. Obviously, it's taught me a huge lesson, even though I should have learned it the first time. I just want to move on. I'm still going to go overseas to work and take care of time. I just want to move on. I'm still gonna go overseas to work and take care of myself. Each year, things will improve, but I'll be waiting for the time
Starting point is 01:03:31 when the children want to see me again. I'm looking forward to this time, but I know it'll be hard. This is a personal letter to you, Virginia, because I feel like I owe you something. However, you can pass this on to John for his information if you'd like. Once again, I ask for discretion when dealing with this matter, as I'm surrounded by people
Starting point is 01:03:49 who just don't know. Could you pass this on as a request to Jon as well? I just don't want to upset or alienate or hurt any more people, you know? Thank you Virginia. Virginia passes this very bizarre letter to Jon and she tries to continue with the adoption. Meanwhile, Jon is investigating the crap out of Kelly and she's so shady. He wants to get to the bottom of it. He tracks down her quote-unquote midwife. She's a nurse, not a registered midwife, and guess who she is. Duncan's mom.
Starting point is 01:04:20 What? But he doesn't know that yet. They also try to track down the father of the baby, Adam Williams. Can't be found in London or Sydney, Australia. They also get the Manly Police Department involved and they have the head detective on this case. Detective Matt. No, he was a little bit thrown off. Detective Matt asked if he could be replaced.
Starting point is 01:04:41 Asked if he could not be in this case at all. Because he used to work under Sergeant Lane. Kelly's dad. He knows Kelly. Oh my gosh. But they said, yeah, we don't really care. You better do this. So from the get-go, this is a bad idea.
Starting point is 01:04:56 Matt did not think he was investigating a missing child case or even a potential homicide case. He just thought that there was some weird shit going on. And I mean, I guess I can see how that happened because the police categorized her case as, and I quote, an incident, not a missing person's or a suspected death. So Matt still hangs out with Rob Lane every week. He doesn't tell Rob that there's a case on his daughter. He doesn't even tell Rob that he's working on a case for his daughter and he literally had no supervision. None of the officers did. The Manly Police Department was under a secret of police investigation called Operation Florida. What?
Starting point is 01:05:32 A lot of the police officers were suspected of taking money from criminals, businessmen that were super shady and drug dealers. A ton of them were later thrown in prison. Rob Lane was not one of those people, but it's just the type of situation we're dealing with. It's the type of police station we're dealing with. Matt also did an interview Kelly about her missing baby for at least one and a half years since the case opened. For one and a half years he just helped you know maybe she'll work it out in private. Maybe she'll figure it out seems like a personal thing. I don't need to
Starting point is 01:06:03 embarrass her or Rob's whole family over this. I don't need to search her car. I don't even need to reach out to Auburn or Ride Hospital. I don't even need to reach out to Virginia or John from CPS. You just kind of let everything slide off the table. But the only thing that kept the investigation going was Julie, the name of the supposed midwife that was going to help her with the now missing baby. Remember Julie? This is Duncan's mom?
Starting point is 01:06:28 Mm-hmm. Now, John from CPS doesn't know Duncan's mom, but Matt, he's part of the small community and he's like, that's Duncan's mom! That's weird. Maybe I'll just call her up. So he calls her up. Okay, can we talk real quick? Listen, and she's confused. All I know is that she dated my son way back in the day. I mean, yet Kelly knew that I was trying to be a midwife, but I didn't even know she was pregnant.
Starting point is 01:06:51 Oh my God, was it Duncan's child? Okay, so now Matt's thinking, oh, this kind of feels like a case. Let's track down Duncan. He's in the UK with Tina at this point. He's like back and forth, okay? Hey, so can I talk to you about your ex? Sure what's going on?
Starting point is 01:07:08 We shared a baby last year. I guess it's yours not yours, I don't know. I mean, that's what everybody's saying. But she also had another one a few years ago while you guys were dating. What? That's impossible. I was dating her. I would have known if she was pregnant. What are you talking about? Well, she was pregnant and she had a baby. So he's in the UK just like, OK, I'm
Starting point is 01:07:32 going to ignore this situation and he tries to move on. Then N comes a guy by the name of Chase, an old family friend of the Lane's family. Now, Chase and his family had moved to the United Kingdom for a while. Everyone's going to the UK. But Chase was looking to come back home to Australia. So of course, the lanes offered to let him stay
Starting point is 01:07:49 and their family home while he got settled. Now, Chase and Kelly are the same age, 25 years old. They're hitting it off. Chase is looking for a roommate so he could move out of the lane house and Kelly's like, well, that's so convenient because I was looking to move out of this house too. Why don't we move out together? Of my own family's home because I'm looking to move out of this house too. Why don't we move out together?
Starting point is 01:08:05 My own family's home because I'm trying to be independent and we can get an apartment. So right from the get go, I mean it was weird. One day their roommates, the next day overnight almost, there are a couple and better being better boom, she gets pregnant for the fifth time. She gets pregnant. Okay. Okay. Now, Chase is new.
Starting point is 01:08:24 He's a blank slate. He does no idea about Kelly's past, who she dated, or the fact that she had children. And this time, Kelly doesn't want to keep it a secret. She announces to him four months in the choose pregnant. You're going to be a dad! What? I thought you were on the pill! I'm not ready! I'm not ready to be married or be a dad! But Kelly said, I'm keeping the baby, I've already decided. So Chase's shaken up and he starts coming around to the idea. It was seven months into her fifth pregnancy and the detective decides, you know what I should talk to her.
Starting point is 01:08:56 So detective Matt shows up. Can we talk about baby Tegan? First Kelly, I want to ask you, who's the father? A guy named Andrew Morris, he was a nine years older than me. He was living with his girlfriend at the time and they had an affair. I was with Duncan at the time, but I was sleeping with Andrew Morris. And I told him that I was pregnant and he told me that he and his girlfriend would take the baby and raise the baby as their own.
Starting point is 01:09:21 Wallace, you don't even know if she's telling the truth or not. Yeah, she's like a weird one. I tell you, like this case has me all over the place in my emotions. My theory keeps changing literally like the past couple days. I keep going back and forth to what I actually believe. Well, I was at the hospital. Androon and his girlfriend came to pick up the baby. We were discharged together and they met me outside in the parking lot and they dropped me off at Duncan's house and they left. They took baby Tegan with him. So for the next few months, you know, I saw her a couple times here and there but the last time I saw him was in 96, I haven't seen him in forever. What can we get his number or his address? Like,
Starting point is 01:10:00 we just need to confirm. Well, I have no way of contacting them. So Matt's pretty frustrated. He's like, what can you come down to the station and answer a few questions? They record her and she just repeats herself. I mean, it's just strange. But the manly police kind of buy her a story. They don't think that she's a suspect in her own child's disappearance. And they just forget about it all essentially.
Starting point is 01:10:21 Matt later remembers, oh yeah, I should probably try to find the baby's birth certificate. That would be a good idea, like a good starting point, and he can't find it. So for 18 months, nothing. Nobody works on the case at all. Manly Police Department was under attack by people who followed the law. Police officers left and right were being arrested for corruption. It was a shit show. It wasn't until all of this calm down that they could get back to their case with a new detective. Meanwhile, Kellyanne and her entire family in Chase, they're excited, they're expecting her first child. She had a beautiful baby shower
Starting point is 01:10:55 and finally, April 2002, six years after baby Tegan's disappearance, the new detective comes knocking on her door. He's taking this case seriously. He reviews the tapes of Kelly's interviews with Matt, and he's kind of rooting for Kelly. She seems sincere. There's nothing in her story that would indicate that she's lying. The baby seems alive. She's now a chase and a stable relationship. They have an 18-month-old daughter.
Starting point is 01:11:20 She's been coaching Water Polo for seven years now in a prestigious school. Maybe this was just a traumatic sad chapter of this young woman's life, but she's this whole life ahead of her. All he has to do, simple, is track down the dad, and the baby, and they enclose the case once and for all, everyone can move on. But there's no Andrew Morris living in the area, not back in 1996 either. He brings in Kelly to talk to him, himself, and she's put together well dressed, neat. She's nice, but not that nice. She's a bit of a condescending attitude. So, Kelly, we need to find baby Teagan.
Starting point is 01:11:55 Yeah, I gave her to her father, Andrew Norris. What did you just say? You told Detective Matt that his name was Andrew Morris. Now I told him it was Norris. Oh, okay. So two days after Tegan was born, you were discharged from the hospital, you meet the father outside, you get into his car and he drives you into Tegan's place. Not that someone happened. What would happen? When I told Andrew Norris that I was pregnant, he was upset, he was furious, he called me
Starting point is 01:12:25 a slut. He said that him and his girlfriend wanted to raise the child though. So I left the hospital, they were waiting outside. It was Andrew, his girlfriend, and his parents. They take the baby from me and they left me to get your taxi back home. She didn't know that she was recorded? Yeah. So he's like, Kelly, this story is different from the one that you told Detective Matt like a year or so ago.
Starting point is 01:12:46 Well, I lied to him. I was embarrassed about Andrew hating me and he didn't drop me off. And you have no idea where Andrew or baby Tegan is now. None of your friends have ever heard of Andrew have they? Do they know Andrew? My friend Linda, the one she's in the UK, the one I... yeah, she's... she knows. Oh, well, did she know about you being pregnant? Yeah. Can you give me Linda's contact? Oh, yeah, no, I can't do that. I lost it a few years ago. We lost touch. I don't know what she's doing. Well, can you find the apartment where Andrew lived when you were seeing each other? I need that address.
Starting point is 01:13:23 I mean, I guess I can try. I mean, this new detective, he's super confused and honestly suspicious of Kelly now. So he starts focusing on searching for any Norris or Morris out there, and he sends a memo out to all the schools asking if there's a Teigen girl in attendance. The same age as Teigen should be in that area. There's medical searches done to see if there's a record of Teigen anywhere. What's going on? It would be years before the police find out that when she was giving birth to her third child, she told the hospital staff remember that Tegan was with her. But they didn't know all of that. So they think some random dude named Andro-Norris or Andro-Morris
Starting point is 01:13:59 or whatever had this baby. There's no record though. No Tegan anywhere, no checkups, no doctors records, nothing. After Kelly took her in her arms, walked out of the hospital with this newborn, nothing. So he starts questioning her friends. He tracks down Linda who tells them, yeah, I don't know who the hell Andrew Norris is and you're telling me she was pregnant. No, we're still friends. She literally just came over for Christmas.
Starting point is 01:14:24 So I don't know why she told you that she doesn't have my number anymore. May of 2003, he brings in Kelly for a proper interview. This is, you know, kind of a rundown of what happened. And she said, well, same thing that I told you, we were having an affair. Now she's living with him and his partner. Well, Kelly, we have to investigate further and we have to start interviewing your family and she starts freaking out What? Because I don't know where Andrew is everybody's lives are gonna be destroyed because I can't get in contact with someone I barely know because you can't find him and Sydney No Kelly because there's very serious Suspicious circumstances in which your child has gone missing. Did you kill the child?
Starting point is 01:15:02 Oh my god. No, he didn't I didn't do anything like that did somebody else kill the child? Oh my god! No, he didn't. I didn't do anything like that. Did somebody else kill the child? No! All right. So like I said, we have to start making inquiries now. We have to start asking your family members. Please detective, you don't understand. How can you, can you just please stop the tape? Can you stop recording for a second? I'd rather not. Listen, nothing happened to Deegan. Andrew said he would let me know if there was an emergency. I haven't heard from them, not one word. I don't have anything else to say.
Starting point is 01:15:33 Can you tell me who's the father of your third child? I feel like I'm being backed into a corner. I mean, it's just so bizarre. This whole thing is bizarre. So she's released because, I mean, they don't really have any information. And Kelly starts living her best life. She didn't really care. She has been focusing on planning her wedding.
Starting point is 01:15:49 Chase had proposed to her recently. She hasn't been calling the police back in one day that detectives shows up at her house. Chase is out. She's alone with her child and he says, listen Kelly, let's talk. And she just starts crying. You don't know what it's like. I'm gonna lose everything. I'm supposed to get married next month. But I'm gonna lose Chase, our daughter, even
Starting point is 01:16:08 my job, my parents, everything. There's no way our private school is gonna employ someone who is given a child away. There's no reason for you to lose your child. Yes I will. You don't know my dad like I do. What? Yeah, it's weird. My dad?
Starting point is 01:16:23 Yeah. This is like a whole theory later. When did you find out that you were pregnant with Teigen? Maybe 12 to 14 weeks in? And when did you tell this Andrew Morris? I would say 2 to 3 weeks later. And he was rude and obviously not pleased. He said that I trapped him and I was a slut.
Starting point is 01:16:41 Then why did you put Duncan down as the father of Teigen? And his mom is the midwife? I wanted Duncan to be there, something was going to happen to me, like if I was going to die or something. Kelly, were you expecting to die? Well, I almost did. So there were complications when you're giving birth to Tegan. Yeah, the hospital said I was very sick. This is a lot. She was in perfect health. So it's very confusing. I just, Kelly, bear with me. I don't know why you gave the hospital all their names, but you gave them all the wrong numbers.
Starting point is 01:17:13 So if you really were dying and you want to dunk in there, you didn't give them the proper number. I don't know, it was a long time ago. Listen, Kelly, we have to find baby Tegan. We think that she might be dead. And Kelly at this point seemed a lot more concerned about who he might have talked to, rather than that her daughter might be dead. She said, I don't understand why you would ring up my old friend. My friend that I was barely close with.
Starting point is 01:17:35 I've been spoken to her in years, and then she calls me because of this. If even she knows, that means everybody knows. I mean, I get it. It's your job, but why did you call her? Because apparently she was a friend of yours at the time. No, she wasn't. I mean this is so weird, why is that the like thing on her mind? So after they leave, she ends up telling Chase everything. And well not everything, but that she was pregnant, she had babies up for adoption, and he believes her. He's 100% behind her, and he wants her to tell her parents before the police do.
Starting point is 01:18:05 And she's complaining. I don't even know how to put these into words, you know. Life is just gonna be so hard to hurt someone again. Like, I've already hurt you. I've just ripped my guts out all week. I felt so sick. I feel like I'm going through it all over again and I'm just sick of talking about it. Listen. Go see a counselor. Go talk to your friends, go for a walk, you don't have to be superwoman, your family's gonna understand. But I'm alone Chase, that's what it feels like. You're not alone, I'm with you. Like they're just like going through
Starting point is 01:18:34 this and we know this conversation because the police had tapped her phone. Yeah, they tapped her phone. They're gonna later tap and wire and secretly record her entire living room. And so first Kelly tells her mom, even though she's closer with her dad. And she tells her something a little bit weird. Her mom warns her, you have to be telling the absolute truth because you know how your dad is. He can find out things you would never believe. Yes, I know mom. I mean, you told me that this young guy wants to raise the baby, which is unusual.
Starting point is 01:19:04 You have to admit, right? Yeah, I know mom. Like was his family behind him on this? Yes, well how come the police aren't baddering the parents as to where the child and this Andrew guy is? Mom, I don't know where his family even is Sandy's asking Kelly all the tough questions, but she's behind her 100% She's got her back probably because she doesn't have all the facts She's behind her 100% she's got her back probably because she doesn't have all the facts. She just keeps saying I just hope to God this doesn't become a court case because it's gonna hurt your brother's career. So the child was still alive three years ago?
Starting point is 01:19:33 You said the police contacted you first three years ago. I don't know mom I'm assuming the kids still alive. And he just vanished with your child. Yes, that's just what I said. So Kelly doesn't tell them about the other two kids that she had put up for adoption. She just says it's this one. So the parents still have no clue the whole story? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:56 And the mom even says you could have put up the child for adoption instead. And Kelly says, Mom, I don't want to talk about it right now. Now the whole family sits down, they break the news to rob the dad, and honestly, he took it well until the detective came knocking on their door and broke the news that Kelly had two other kids. Sandy was in tears, Rob was pacing the room, saying, we will get to the bottom of this, we'll get to the bottom of this. And even with all of this, the wedding still happened.
Starting point is 01:20:24 Everybody showed up at the beach wedding pretending nothing was wrong. I mean, yeah, Kelly's bizarre, but so are her parents. So four and a half years after the police investigation starts, the new detective refers the case to the prosecutors, and the media doesn't know they're trying to search for more answers, and they even go to immigration for any children born on that day with the last name Norris or Morris or Lane that have left the country nothing Kelly's now refusing to talk to the police. She loyered up everyone was behind her Her friends and family the ones that knew about it. They supported her
Starting point is 01:20:57 She said that she couldn't abort the baby because she couldn't hurt babies So she also didn't put the baby up for adoption. I mean, they thought, well, you were young, you had a lot on your mind, we get it. Now, October of 2004, the police were fed up. Kelly's not cooperating, so they actually take off the non-publication ban. So Australia has a non-publication ban, which means journalists, even if they walk into a court
Starting point is 01:21:21 hearing, they can't publish anything about it. So they decide, the police said everybody decides we're gonna lift the band because she's not talking. And the press, the journalists, they show up at the court and it was a media circus. I mean, just absolute chaos. It's said that the journalists were walking out of the courthouse skipping,
Starting point is 01:21:41 because I knew this was about to be a good one. A hard hitterthouse, skipping, because I knew this was going to be a good one. A hard hitter. Yeah, skipping. A child is missing, but they're like, yeah, they were excited. So as soon as it's published, she loses her job. People stare at her on the street. Her friends and her family, however, they don't abandon her, like she said. They start going out to these very public lunches to show their support for her and July of 2005 a
Starting point is 01:22:06 Paternity test was done for Kelly's first child. That was adopted not the missing child And this was when she was dating Duncan remember. Yeah, Duncan was not the father. I Mean this was a shock for everyone I mean what did they find out the father? No Just you're not the father. I believe that one of the fathers was found and it's all like, you know, not public information but it was like a high school boyfriend or something like that. Or like the guy that she was dating before she's met Duncan, it's weird.
Starting point is 01:22:37 Okay. Just the whole thing is weird. Her dad said, I believe the Andru Nora story. I don't think that's his real name though. I think Kelly was given a fake name since he was having an affair. Okay, I mean, kind of makes sense, maybe? They brought Duncan to testify during pre-challet hearings and they asked, how did you not know that she was pregnant?
Starting point is 01:22:59 He said, I mean, I guess there was a time where we would only have sex in the spoon position and she would freak out when I tried to grab her waist and she said that she was getting fat. But I know how women can be sensitive about that kind of stuff, so. Okay, done, kids. We're just in shock. I definitely didn't know that she put me down as the father of three of her babies. I mean, it was just bizarre. And that was that.
Starting point is 01:23:23 The prosecutor believed he again was dead, and he forward the case to the South Wales Homicide Squad. So they have to do this full investigation. They're going to go forward. They're going to arrest her. I mean, it was a lot. Robin Sandi, they sold their investment property. They drained their life savings to get her good legal, like, oh, defense.
Starting point is 01:23:41 It was a lot of strain on her relationship with her and Chase. They break up, but they decide to co-parent. And then the craziest realization took place. The UK address that Kelly gave Virginia, remember? She was like, oh, I live in the UK. I gotta go back to London for work. She was like, oh, what's your address in the UK? It was Chase's family home before he moved.
Starting point is 01:24:01 And then last year later, she was pregnant with Chasis Baby. I mean, the whole thing was just a little weird. Like, it's a little kind of like stucker vibes, like a little bizarre, like weird. Why did you do that? The homicide squad, at this point, find the father of her two babies.
Starting point is 01:24:15 And yeah, so- Would they do find it? Yes, but it's not public. So the first one was the rugby player that she was casually seeing before Duncan. And the third one was the rugby player that she was casually seeing before Duncan and the third one was a friend of her brothers. Oh Okay, yeah, okay, so her little brother's friend. So I don't know why she's not just telling them. Yeah, like
Starting point is 01:24:37 There's a theory. So I mean it's shocking. They also find out that Kelly had another abortion So she had been pregnant a total of six times. Oh, you found out another abortion. Yeah. So she had two abortions. Then a kid that was adopted, then Tegan, who's missing, then another kid who's adopted, and then her child with Chase. Wow. So the theory that the police had was that when Kelly found out that she was pregnant early enough, she terminated the pregnancy, but a lot of her pregnancy she found out way too late. So she was forced to give birth So when this type of news comes out a lot of her friends start to distance themselves from her I mean this is a very like a more conservative town
Starting point is 01:25:19 abortion is already so scandalous and then this is just odd reckless behavior So they just can't stand by it So the trial takes place July of 2010 and Andrew Norris takes the stand What there is such person. Oh, yeah Kelly had a one night stand with this man 16 years ago They questioned him because of his name. He knew Kelly He recognized her picture could I de, but the timeline didn't match up. He couldn't be Teagan's father, but he was the inspiration for the name.
Starting point is 01:25:50 How did she get pregnant five times while she was on the pill you might ask? So the prosecutor pointed out she was drinking all the time. She was throwing up because she would get so drunk. Now, she prided herself in being able to keep up with the boys, and if you're throwing up a lot, it's possible the pill wasn't being absorbed properly, and the person gets pregnant. Kelly never wanted the responsibility of a child. The first two times she gets an abortion.
Starting point is 01:26:16 The third time she actually gave birth for the first time placed her an adoption, then the fourth, you know, we don't know what happened. The fifth... Adoption. She kept it all a secret. She felt like she'd be rejected by her friends and family if they ever found out. But what did she do to baby Teagan? Maybe she felt like the first adoption process
Starting point is 01:26:33 was too risky. They were asking a lot of questions. There was a lot of lying involved. Maybe they would ask even more if it's her second child. So she takes Teagan home and the prosecutor fills in the blanks. They say ladies and gentlemen there is not a slightest suggestion that the accused was suffering from any sort of postnatal depression or any other mental disturbance. Quite the contrary,
Starting point is 01:26:55 she had an appointment to meet her boyfriend at her parents house so they could get dressed and go to a wedding. They went to a wedding at 4 p.m. and a reception after the wedding. She's having a good time, socializing, drinking, dancing. Now, I'll be honest with you, the prosecutors were out of hand on this trial. They essentially called her a drunk slug, a bajillion times. I mean, I get it. Allegedly, she might be a killer, but really?
Starting point is 01:27:19 Just because she drinks and has sex, doesn't make her a killer. It's the killing that makes her a killer. Like, you can't just be like, she's drunk. She has sex with men. It's the killing that makes her a killer. Like you can't just be like, she's just sex with men. She's definitely a killer, a baby killer. The jury, they were picked because they were more liberal typically with their view of abortion, but even they were shocked when Kelly flew to Queensland
Starting point is 01:27:36 to abort her child at six and a half months. During the court trial, the parents are shocked and confused. They look like that age 20 years. They were answering questions that they were not prepared for. They said, no, we didn't live in the UK. I don't know why she lied to the adoption agency. No she didn't bring anyone with her in 1999 to give birth. Tegan wasn't there.
Starting point is 01:27:59 We didn't cut her off. We didn't disown her. We didn't know she was pregnant. Meanwhile, when she's during this trial, she's out on bail, and she's outliving it up. Going on dates with her new boyfriend, eating out, going to the beach, blowing off steam, she would come to court with a tan from her beach dates, and her whole defense was no body, no murder, and the case is really hard, because if she allegedly murdered her baby, that's heinous to hell with her, right?
Starting point is 01:28:25 On the other hand, unmarried pregnant women are shunned by society and disowned by their families and it still happens to this day. So it's confusing, they just want to know, did maybe you offer to give Tegan to someone, I mean, that's still illegal, you still need to face the consequences, we still need to find baby Tegan, but just be honest with us, what's going on? So you kind of feel some sympathy for her because you know we do live in a society where she can't just outright say how she feels and she gets ashamed for being a mom that's not married and being young you know.
Starting point is 01:28:55 But at the same time Kelly refuses to cooperate. Who knows where this child is. I mean how much of her lies are out of fear and how much is it out of manipulation? Is she hiding something? And at the end of the case, the judge finds her guilty. She was sentenced to 18 years in prison. She will be eligible for parole in 2024. To this day, she denies murdering Tegan.
Starting point is 01:29:19 Tegan would have been 25 years old right now. She has not been found dead or alive. Her dad hasn't been found either. And to be fair, there were nearly 8,000 bursts on registered and new south whales per year during the mid 90s. Anyone of those could be Tegan Lane. Also during the investigation, the police found about 150 children that were unaccounted for it that could also be Tegan. But because Kelly is refusing to talk to the police, we'll never really know what happened. Here are the theories though.
Starting point is 01:29:48 1. Kelly murdered Tegan. She was stressed, she wanted to be an Olympian, she had to take this child home, felt like she couldn't put her out for adoption again, the process was long, and you know it almost got her caught the first time, like her family almost found out. So the weddings in a few hours, she can't leave a crying baby at home. It won't stop crying. And it's just an impulsive solution.
Starting point is 01:30:09 Just kill her. Get it over with so she can move on with her life. Second, it was murder, but a little more accidental, but still murder. Maybe the baby was crying. She didn't want the baby to begin with and she shook the baby. And maybe not with the intention to kill the baby, just like stop like I'm panicked.
Starting point is 01:30:27 I don't know what to do. I have a wedding to go to in two hours. She shook the baby to shut it up and it died. And she disposed of the body. 3. She really did give it to the father, but he wasn't Andrew Norris. Which is weird because you know, I mean the dad theory made sense of the dad being like, oh maybe he told her a fake name, but why would she come up with Andrew Norris,
Starting point is 01:30:48 like a guy that she did have a one night stand with? Yeah, she could have just told the real name and everything will be square away. Exactly. Or maybe she gave her to anyone. So someone had mentioned on Reddit that, you know, that woman at the hospital that I'm still born, maybe it was an agreement between the two women that she would just take the child, but I just don't think that the police wouldn't have investigated that,
Starting point is 01:31:10 and I just don't think that Kelly would protect this woman. Yeah, I also think the chances that I see, yeah, it's really bizarre. You know what I mean? Yeah. Another theory is that she is protecting someone. So she was obsessed with this idea all along that people will abandon her, her friends and her family.
Starting point is 01:31:29 Maybe, you know, someone she'd loved accidentally killed her child. Maybe she's covering for them. She seems quite selfish. She should be covering someone. That is true. Maybe she accidentally killed her child. Not even with the shaking baby syndrome
Starting point is 01:31:45 But just you know nobody knowing she was pregnant and then her hiding all of this and then to say hey guys by the way I know you didn't know I was pregnant, but I was and I accidentally killed my baby. It wouldn't be believable So maybe she you know, I don't know But I mean the overall question is how do you do that and still have fun two hours later? At a wedding. The theory is that she dropped her child off somewhere just to abandon her and someone picked her up. So if someone had picked up this baby for bad reasons, then of course they're not going
Starting point is 01:32:17 to come forward. It's probably a really creepy person. But even with good reasons, maybe you wouldn't come forward. Like you've built this life with this child, and now there's so much publicity. This child probably thinks you're their biological parents. Like would you really come forward? But I just don't know why you wouldn't go to the police. I feel like the odds of like a couple walking by
Starting point is 01:32:37 who were having trouble conceiving, who really wanted to, you know, have a baby, but also decided that they weren't gonna tell the cops, I mean, it just seems slim. I feel like even if we were having trouble conceiving, I would still go to the police first. Yeah, so imagine you see a baby on the road. I think 90, I hope 99% of people... What would go to the police first? Are not thinking of kidnapping this baby.
Starting point is 01:32:58 And like raising it as my own. Exactly. And if you show that baby so much love, you should probably go to the police first, you know? Exactly. So the chance of that... Are slim. Yeah. But those are the theories out there. Or that Kelly was tricked.
Starting point is 01:33:14 Now, I mean, all of this, I feel like maybe I would have some sympathy for Kelly. There's a huge group of people who think she's innocent. Here's my thoughts. I don't think she's innocent. I don't know what I think she's guilty of, potentially murder, definitely in the context. The thing is, if she's innocent, then she would work her best to solve it, right? Yes. So I definitely think she's guilty of something. I don't know exactly what the charges would be, but I do kind of agree that this is one
Starting point is 01:33:41 of those situations, morally and ethically speaking, I think she's guilty of something. But legally speaking, I don't think that the court case was solid. Even the judge said this was like no evidence at all. Like they really had no evidence. It was just a scandalized trial and the jury found her guilty, so I had no choice. So I think just legally speaking, there wasn't a solid case. So I think that's why she has a big group of supporters. But logically speaking, she's so sweet.
Starting point is 01:34:13 She definitely did something like it's either abandonment, major child neglect, child abuse, you know, maybe even murder. So in jail, she's pretending to be innocent and she starts dating a guy on and off in prison named Patrick, a high school love of hers. They reconnected during her trial. I think that this is the one that she was going on beach dates with. Well let's say she's in prison and Patrick finds someone else to date and Kelly finds out and she's open to it. She's like you're right, you need to have sex while I'm in here until I get out because you know you're a dude I get it, but she writes him a letter and says, Merry Christmas, honey bunny.
Starting point is 01:34:48 Rules are what you can do to make things easier for me slash us. Try not to have her at your house. No photos. Don't compare us. Balance us out. If you're giving her a lot of attention, think about how much I might need some attention. Don't go down on her. That's not negotiable.
Starting point is 01:35:06 Seriously? Say something mean or deny her something every single day. Why that confidence smugs my offer face at least once for me. I, yeah. I'd say take every money that she got, but that's mean, isn't it? Don't pander to her tantrums.
Starting point is 01:35:23 You have this bitch in the bag. Don't call her sweet names, no PDA. Don't say any nice things that you say to me. And see if she'll let you do something really yucky. Like, see if she'll let you pee on her face. Yeah. And then she writes a letter to this woman saying, enjoy playing make believe in my house,
Starting point is 01:35:42 pretending and forcing yourself to fit in under all those tantrums, lies, tears, but you know the truth. You can't change him. Let's guess what Patrick really wants for Christmas. Me. I mean, the whole thing is bizarre. Like Patrick has two kids.
Starting point is 01:35:59 There's a woman who is suspected and convicted of killing a child. And Kelly's also having lesbian relationships in jail? But like he doesn't care and she's just harassing this woman. They actually did like a social media campaign against this woman. Yeah, Kelly had friends and they went on social media and they started taunting her with images of carrots. You're like, why a carrot? So Kelly had essentially said that
Starting point is 01:36:26 Patrick is dangling his carrot in front of this woman pretending like he wants to be with her, but he's just using her for sex and waiting till Kelly gets out of jail. They even tried to ship her carrot. Throughout. Yeah, there was like a social media campaign where all of her jail friends and I guess all of her friends outside of jail We're just sending her like Facebook messages of carrots. Wow Yeah so I don't know
Starting point is 01:36:56 Listen, Carick girl is weird Not the one getting bullied. I'm talking Kelly. Kelly is Carick girl and Carick girl is weird She's got some weird things going on I don't think her to be completely innocent in no way shape or form. I mean just the sheer fact that she's not helping the police Something happened something shady happened and That's it for today's not so many mini-sode. I hope you guys enjoyed and I'll see you guys on Wednesday for the main episode. Bye I'll see you guys on Wednesday for the main episode. Bye!
