Because we're good as gold.
Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Shenanigans.
Today I have a good friend of mine, actor, and who I think is the real star of Jerry Maguire sitting next to me, Mr. Jonathan Lipnicki.
How are you?
Great, how are you doing?
I'm good. I'm excited to have you here.
I'm excited to be here.
I know we've talked about this for a minute.
So here at Shenanigans, we like to start with just that and play a little game.
I was going to do Never Have I Ever, but I did that with my guests last week.
So I was thinking Heads Up.
Have you played that before?
Heads Up.
Not like Heads Up 7-Up.
Oh, the thing. Yeah up yeah that one the one on
your head yeah not like in school when it was like a rainy day you know you put your thumb up
i don't think that's a two-person game it was funny a couple weeks ago i did the never have
i ever with one of my friends and one of the cards was never have i ever had a sexual dream
about someone in this room and it was just the two
of us and he got out and drank on that one it was funny so um we're gonna do heads up there are a lot
of categories that I have on here it's loading Come on, app work.
Okay, here we go.
So I like the adult supervision ones.
I think those are fun.
Oh, I think Heads Up got some updates.
Okay, so we're going to do adult supervision, even adulterer 2.
Are you down for that?
Cool.
So wait, I have to because you put it on your head. Yeah explain. Yeah, so we're going to go, we're going to see
who wins between me and you. Okay, cool.
So do you want to start by guessing or describing?
I'll start by
describing. Okay.
Here we
go.
Florida. uh florida uh dolphins florida people going crazy um they took something molly it was like a zombies made them zombies apocalypse what skip that
Zombies.
Made them zombies.
Apocalypse?
Skip that.
Steps.
Stairs.
Close.
Stairway.
If I had a structure that you put things in.
Bookshelf?
It's the... The top of the bookshelf?
Perfect.
Okay.
It goes in the water.
A boat. A sea-dew. A jet ski. A wave runner the water. A boat.
A sea-doo.
A jet ski.
A wave runner.
Another name for boat.
Uh, ship.
Boat.
How are these adult?
These aren't very adult.
Uh, bras come with them or don't come with them?
Panties, underwear, thongs, lingerie.
Bras specifically come.
Straps.
Strap on.
Nope.
Uh, pads. It was underwire. Bra specifically comes. Straps. Strap on. No. Pad.
It was underwire.
Oh, under.
Well, you're pointing to the strap.
You got to point to the underboob.
I don't wear them.
Absurd the term.
Okay.
Top shelf.
Bath salts.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, it's playing it back.
Okay.
So, we're going to go to bad behavior instead of that i
didn't like that one okay you ready yeah okay so you go down if you get it right toss it if we're
skipping it or you don't know okay um this is something like at the fourth of july uh that you
light off fireworks yeah close but Yeah, close, but...
Firecrackers.
Yes.
Oh, what am I doing with you right now?
I'm playing...
Footsie.
Okay.
It's a game where it has different color circles and you put your body parts all over it.
Yes.
This is when you don't pay at a restaurant.
You just get up and leave.
Yes.
You're spraying this on the walls and you're like in a gang.
Tagged graffiti?
Yeah, graffiti.
Good.
Okay, so if something, it's not like a high neck, it's really...
V-neck?
Close.
Low neck?
U-neck?
Low.
Low cut.
That's close enough.
All right.
Okay, I'm in all black.
I'm into S&M.
I have a whip.
I'm a...
Dominatrix?
Yes. What am I doing in all black. I'm into S&M. I have a whip. I'm a... Dominatrix? Yes.
What am I doing?
Sega Genesis.
Playing video games.
Yes.
Oh, what I just had.
I'm the Dominatrix.
Yes.
I don't have time.
I think you got all of those.
Firecracker.
Boom, boom.
Wow.
You got nine.
Okay.
Yep.
Good job.
Thank you.
All right.
Well.
But to be fair, I had a way better category than you.
Yes.
Yours was way more difficult.
That's true.
And I'm just better at describing.
Yeah. Well, there's that too. I was going to end with that.
I was leading with that it was a better category.
Well, thanks. Yeah.
So, where do we
begin? So many questions,
lots of things to talk about.
When did you start acting?
I was four and three quarters.
Do you even remember that?
I remember the room in which I took the acting class, but I don't remember a lot of specifics.
Yeah.
I don't remember shit from when I was four and three quarters.
Yeah.
I just took a local acting class, and that's kind of when I started.
And then I told my parents I wanted to audition, and they were actually against it at first.
They were the opposite of stage parents.
And then I just kept pushing, and they're like, okay, it's going to be a huge time commitment.
And then I started auditioning.
Cool.
So Jonathan and I met – oh my god.
How long has it been now?
Like five years?
Because it was 2013.
Wow.
Yeah. It was before –
Because I was doing a play.
Yeah.
It was before I got married.
Yeah.
We were at – it was like a christmas event like a charity
event or something and my ex at the time was like oh my god that's jonathan lipnicki and he was like
too shy to talk to you i was like i'll introduce us and five years later still friends yeah good
times we also have my friend victoria in this room who I met through Jonathan.
Still friends.
Thank you for her.
No problem.
Okay, so you said you started in classes.
Did you start in classes when you were like four and three quarters?
Yeah, it was like a kid's local acting class.
I'm from Westlake Village, California.
I was out in Agora Hills.
And I want to say it was like six months before I started like really pursuing it.
Yeah. But what happened was my sister's, my sister was taking the class and she was taking it with a
friend and the friend's mom told the teacher all about me and that I was like this charismatic
little kid. And so the teacher actually approached my mom for me to start early, even though I was
too young. Yeah. And my mom's like, I don't know, you know, and then, you know, really fell in love with
it.
I was like, I really like doing this.
I think it started as a thing where you want to do what your older sibling's doing.
She went into this room.
She came out.
She's happy.
That's all I know.
And then I ended up just loving it, just everything about it.
And that feeling is still the same feeling I have now.
That's awesome. You knew what feeling I have now. Yeah.
That's awesome.
You knew what you wanted so young.
Exactly.
See, I kind of feel like I did too.
I did like school plays and all that. I always knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry.
Like when I would watch like sitcoms or stuff, I'm like, that could totally be me.
Yeah.
And yep, kind of made it happen in a little bit of a different way.
So what was the first movie or what was the first like paid acting job you had?
I was washing a bulldog in a Kodak commercial.
I think it's what it was.
And then I did a – Shell Gas Stations.
I did – I think that was also – that was around the same time.
As a child.
Yeah, where I like sang a little –
Washing dogs and doing gas stations.
And singing in a gas station
commercial and then uh i i think it was i sometimes the timelines mess up but i pretty much auditioned
for jerry mcguire got turned down for the role what they cast another kid they shot two weeks
they came they came back looking for him no way my agent uh like begged them to see me again because
he's like i know that i have the guy
you know in my room right now yeah the guy in my office who is meant to play this role and they
took him for it and i went in there and uh i ended up flying that day to meet tom cruise and
cameron crowe and read for them and then i did jerry mcguire and then right after jerry mcguire
i was immediately on a sitcom called the jeff foxworthy show okay yeah hayley joel osment and i played brothers that's crazy oh my gosh i just found
out one of my friends is dating him really yeah not gonna not gonna put it on blast yeah he's
really nice i ran into him a few years ago i haven't seen him a long time but yeah he's super
good dude yeah i was like oh my god i was just watching the entourage movie and then she like
tells me that's all like wait what i'm so jealous of that beard i want to be able to grow
something like that this is the best little scruff you know i've been trying so hard it
took a while and then i was like you know what i'm gonna i'm gonna keep it yeah yeah looks good
thank you yeah so was jerry mcguire was that like the first like big big thing that you did other
than the commercials yeah that was i mean that was the first like big, big thing that you did other than the commercials?
Yeah.
That was – I mean that was the first – that was the thing that kind of launched me into being able to audition for bigger projects.
You know, that was crazy.
I can't imagine them having someone else.
So they shot with a different kid for two weeks.
Two weeks and it just didn't work?
And then it just didn't work?
It wasn't there, yeah.
Oh my god.
That's so crazy.
They had to fire a little kid.
Do you remember like – that's so sad, right? No, but the kid was actually happy. He's like, I get to go home. Oh, okay. So that so crazy. They had to fire a little kid. Do you remember? That's so sad, right?
No, but the kid was actually happy.
He's like, I get to go home.
Oh, okay.
So that actually made me feel better.
Yeah.
I don't want to take anybody's spot.
Right?
Yeah.
Do you remember even filming that movie?
That was so long ago.
Bits and pieces.
Yeah.
Every year I feel like I just forget more and more.
How often do people come up to you and ask you how much the human head weighs?
The funny thing is you'd think that it would just be like non-existent.
Yeah, I get – you know, it depends.
It all comes in – like I won't get it for maybe like two months.
I won't get it from anybody.
And then there will be like three weeks in a row where it's like every single day for some reason.
It's like one – like it attracts more and more people.
I don't know if it's like the energy or whatever.
But it will happen in little spurts where it like a lot and you're like oh wow okay cool
does the human head really weigh eight pounds no it's a big lie i've thought this my whole life
yeah because of that movie yeah i think it's like 10 or 12 or something but uh you know it's great
people still remember that i'm really grateful for that that. No, I saw that movie, I think. What year was it?
Like, 96?
96, yeah.
Yeah, okay.
So I was 11.
I was, like, in junior high.
But I remember seeing that as a kid.
And you were just the cutest freaking thing ever.
I loved that movie.
And then Stuart Little.
Yeah.
How long after was that?
That was...
Okay, so I did Stuart Little.
I think somewhere in between I did a season of the Jeff Foxworthy show that got canceled.
Yeah.
I did a voice in Dr. Dolittle.
Oh.
Playing a baby tiger.
Nice.
Yeah.
And then I auditioned for the mouse in Stuart Little.
Uh-huh.
This is another weird story where I auditioned for the mouse and the director said that he
wanted to see me on camera and wanted me to be George Little. And he got a lot of resistance.
He said, no, the role is written for a 12-year-old.
He's 7 or 8 or whatever at the time.
And he fought them really hard and he said, 7- or 8-year-old talking to a mouse?
Cute.
12-year-old creepy.
And then they gave me a screen test and I ended up booking it.
Yeah.
Actually, I can see that.
Yeah.
Yeah, because that's almost like a teenager. Yeah. So it yeah so it's like yeah yeah it needs to be a younger kid
exactly it makes more sense i think too yeah so are you and tom cruise are you did you guys ever
like stay in touch after the movie or renee zellweger uh i haven't talked to renee tom i
talked to quite a bit you still do not not like not recent like the last few years but i i
reconnected with him when i was – let's see.
You know, little spurts throughout, I'd see him at stuff, but I reconnected with him when I was 22.
And he actually just – he invited me over and gave me advice on my career.
That's so awesome.
And it was the coolest thing in the world.
And he – because I asked.
I reached out.
I just cold called his office.
Yeah.
And then we made it work schedule wise for him.
And he gave me great advice and he was just really, he's really cool.
And he's always been supportive.
Yeah.
You know, gotta love it.
That's so cool.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
I was just talking to my mom and she's like, can you believe I've never seen Jerry Maguire?
I was like, mom, that's like an iconic movie.
That's why she didn't come today.
Right?
I know.
She didn't want to be asked a question about it and be like, er.
This is the first one she's missed.
She's here every week.
But just with the timing, it's a little later today.
And we've been packing up my old apartment for weeks now and just about done.
Moving is the worst.
It's the absolute worst.
And being in one place for eight years, you acquire a of oh yeah shit that you don't need i mean
it was just like bags and bags of trash my dad's like are you sure this is all trash or is this
donation i'm like no that's just trash i don't know how it all got there but yeah crazy so i was
um reading some articles earlier and i saw that you had said after Jerry Maguire came out that you were
bullied really bad in school yeah I mean it wasn't really so much Jerry after Jerry Maguire
came out it says like you know I did Jerry Maguire's little like my little vampire all kind
of like in a few years in a row and it was more I think kids are more you know nice in elementary
school it came more in middle school dude Dude, middle school kids are ruthless.
8th grade
1997 and 8
was literally the worst year of my entire
life to this day.
It's a nightmare, middle school.
High school was a breeze compared to this.
I was fine with high school. I was great in high school.
It was really rough.
My parents always
wanted me to have a normal childhood really rough i went to i've always my parents always had
you know wanted me to have a normal childhood so i went to public school and so i went to a
different at elementary school everybody kind of knew me for you know whatever five years
and then uh going into middle school different schools fed into it and so it was the weirdest
thing where i'd never had this experience but i got mobbed like the first few days where
you know people wanted to meet me and talk to me.
And it was, you know, I just didn't know how to react to it because I wasn't used to that
in a school setting.
Right.
And the principal came over because they thought it was a fight and it was just kids wanting
to like talk to me or get an autograph or whatever.
And I was.
Autographs.
Yeah, which is so funny.
So like 90s.
Exactly.
And I was, you know, and it was, you know, I just wanted to honestly
be like any other kid and make friends. And it was really rough. Like I had a panic attack probably
every night before I went to school the next day because I was made fun of for what I wore. Cause
I loved basketball. So I had all these jerseys and I was like, it was straight after like Mike
and I was like super into basketball. And, uh, yeah, it was the toughest three years of my life
because I had also developed really bad
anxiety just totally separate issue yeah and so put the anxiety and mix it with kids not being
so nice and at that age it was really rough do you still struggle with anxiety as an adult yes
uh it's you know it's it's gotten a lot better but um it's still like you know it's still there
yeah you know i've developed it pretty bad but it's i've
learned how to deal with it now but just i mean i can't imagine having that type of attention as a
kid like when i met sir like gay pride last week oh yeah it must have been insane it was so
overwhelming it was just like one of the girls had a full-on panic attack and she's like i don't know
how you do this and it's like you just got to find ways to deal with it because when you're in that industry
you're going to get that attention if you're in a popular movie or on a popular show and
yeah and i think i would have had the anxiety totally separate of whether i was in any movie
or not um it just you know you combine the two right and it's not the best recipe and and then
then i think kind of my anxiety changed over
the years though it used to be like totally weird irrational things uh and then it became irrational
things relating to my career yeah and it's because i'm just always trying to do the right thing and
you know you know and it gets it gets it can get overwhelming and uh you know i'm really glad that
social media wasn't around oh my god i could not imagine being in school with social media.
I feel so bad for kids nowadays.
Oh, it's the worst.
Because, like, I mean, it's one thing to get bullied, but then the cyberbullying, it's like you go home and it's still there.
Like you can't escape it.
I would get, like, literally I'd be sitting in class and the teacher's aide would come in and give me a note.
And I thought I had to go to, like, the nurse's office or something.
And it would be, like, a death threat. Wow. But it's like that's how it come in and give me a note and I thought I had to go to like the nurse's office or something and it would be like a death threat.
Wow.
And like, but it's like that's how it was in the 90s.
Like that was the type of bullying or it was like they would try and start a fight with
me during recess.
And I'm like, then I got suspended and I'm like, I'm a straight A student.
Like I'm like head of the yearbook staff and all of this graduating with honors, but I'm
getting suspended because these girls are trying to start a fight with me.
And that shit carries over.
I saw you said, are you still friends with like some of them on Facebook?
Yeah.
Same.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
And they comment on all of my shit and I'm like, oh my God, so proud of you.
That's not like, bitch, you are not nice to me.
You know, I know.
You know that I know that we both know.
Yeah.
I'm like, you know, whenever I talk about being bullied, I'm like, that's you.
You know, it's funny.
One of the kids was the meanest to me.
Yeah, whenever I talk about being bullied, I'm like, that's you.
You know, it's funny.
One of the kids was the meanest to me.
He – I ran into him out with some friends and he was with some people from the hometown.
He kind of got stranded and separated from the group and I let him crash at my house.
No way. Yeah.
That's awesome.
And you know what?
Because you're a good person.
Well, people grow up.
Yeah.
Oh, absolutely.
And yeah, it was – it sucked at the time though, right?
I mean it was – it's one of those things where you're – I just wanted to be friends.
I never – the way I was raised, my parents were always, you know, you're a normal kid.
This is what you do for fun.
But people – and I'm sure you deal with this now because people do this as adults even though it's super stupid and immature.
They assume that you're going to be a certain way.
Oh, yeah.
You're like, oh, so then I kind of have to take them down a notch.
And you're like, no, I'm here and I've been taking down several notches before in my life.
Like, I'm good.
No more notch taking down for me.
You know?
And I think that was the thing with middle schools.
I didn't go into it thinking I was ever better than anyone.
But people are like, oh, you think that you're, you know.
And you're like, no.
And I'm like, no, I really don't.
I'm just trying to, like, make friends.
Right.
You know?
And I think, too, growing up in LA, it's like we aren't as – what's the word?
It doesn't really – how do I say this?
I feel like when people come from other places, it's like they try and be L.A.
and just conform and fit in.
And when you grow up out here, it's like I don't really get starstruck
or things don't really phase me because it's like this is the life I've always been in.
And so I can –
Yeah, that's the interesting thing.
LA gets such a bad rap, but it's a lot of other people coming here trying to be cool.
They're the ones who make us look bad.
Yeah, where it's really – I mean a lot of the LA natives I know are just kind of chilled out because they go through that wanting to be cool face probably like 21 through 24.
They get it out of their system.
If that even, I know a lot of people just kind of were always just pretty chill.
And it's definitely people – transplants that come and they're like, I got to be this way because I'm like reinventing myself now that I'm in LA, which is so dumb.
Yeah.
That's what makes dating in LA so much fun, right?
The worst. The worst. you know, which is so dumb. Yeah, that's what makes dating in L.A. so much fun, right?
The worst.
The worst.

So, okay.
So going back, dating in L. in la how's that going it's going yeah uh you know it's you know
it's funny i was thinking about it on the way here because i thought you'd probably ask that
question and i was thinking about it and it's interesting it's not like i'm seeing anyone
yeah but because people kind of float around they like come back and they go and do their thing and
like i feel like people are floating all the time. So it's like,
I'm never really at this point seeing anyone, but I'm never not, not, not seeing anyone, you know?
So you have like a good like rotation going, you have like a roster.
No, not like that in any way. It's just kind of people come in and out of your life and people
get busy. And, um, you know, I'm really like at this point I really would like to meet someone.
I've been single for a while.
How long have you been single?
Three and a half years, maybe three.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, because I've just been like, you know, and I've dated a lot.
It's just nothing turned into a relationship.
Mm-hmm.
And which is cool.
You know, I've had a lot of fun.
Yeah.
And being young in L.A. and that's very fun too.
But, yeah, I'd like to meet somebody yeah all right
ladies he is single do you have any like really bad dating stories I know Victoria was telling me
earlier that you had some some awkward ones with like not like a fan but like where people just
like only want to talk about you as a kid. Yeah. You know, that's that's interesting because you got to kind of have perspective when you
when you talk to somebody about stuff they did when they're a kid.
Yeah.
Because sometimes it just comes off weird.
I'm like, wait, are you like in love with a little kid?
Like that's kind of weird.
You're like, where are your glasses?
Yeah.
I mean, I've had a lot of that.
You tell me about your neighbor's rabbits.
Yeah. It's like, yeah, there's been like a lot of weird stuff where, yeah, I'm like, oh, yeah. Like, where are your glasses? Yeah. I mean, I've had a lot of that. You tell me about your neighbor's rabbits. Yeah. There's been a lot of weird stuff where, yeah, I'm like, oh, yeah, what are you into?
And they're like, this.
And then they just have to dive into that.
And they're like, I just have to.
It's like they break at a certain point.
I just have to talk to it.
I'm like, okay, cool.
Yeah, I mean, I've had a lot of weird – I'm trying to think of some of the weirder ones.
I had a girl give me a resume.
Oh, my God. No, she didn't. You had a girl give me a resume. Oh my god.
No, she didn't.
Yeah.
You're like, is this a date or a freaking meeting?
Well, what happened was we were hanging out and then one day I got an email from her.
I don't even remember giving her my email.
And it was a resume and she's like, this is how you're going to talk to your agent when you get me representation.
What?
But the funny thing is if I could help people get their career started, wouldn't my career
be a lot bigger?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Right?
Like, I'm just trying to audition and do my whole thing right now.
And I can't help anybody, but, you know, people think that you can, you know, it's...
So do you audition a lot or do you get a lot of things offered to you because you've been
in the industry for so long?
You know, I probably get, I get a few offers a year and I turn down a lot of things offered to you because you've been in the industry for so long uh you know it's i probably get i get a few offers a year and i turned out a lot of them because
things that are straight offered to me because of where i am in my career aren't the most you know
usually the best jobs so you know sometimes i and i've done i've done you know a lot of work
uh since like i graduated high school is when i kind of really started acting and i've
done like a little under 20 films.
And so I've worked quite a bit but it's – a lot of the offers I get I don't take and a lot of the things I do are things I audition for.
Yeah.
Because just they're usually better jobs because if it's a really competitive job, then chances are they're offering it to someone killing it right now.
And I'm very honest with myself about where I stand.
And the types of jobs I want are the most competitive ones.
So I'm auditioning for them.
Awesome.
You know, and it's one of those things where I'm never ashamed of it.
I'm super grateful of everything I've done for everything I've done.
But it's also like I just want to be liked for me.
I think I'm an all right guy.
And it's funny to me because, like I said, that's how I was raised.
So I don't think of it as anything for a reason to date me.
I think it's like, oh, cool.
They're dating me.
My boyfriend did that stuff.
So he's pursuing that.
And that's cool.
But I never thought it would ever be anything that was like, oh, I want to date him because of that.
But it's – There are those weirdos out there i was naive to that and then i'm like why do
they why are they tagging me in everything yeah well like my girlfriend the other night she's like
okay she's like so you know i've been out here i've been staying with this guy and she's like
guess who it is and instead of just saying hayley joel osmond she's like you know the kid from the
sixth sense and it's like he's an adult now it's like you know the guy in entourage who plays like
billy bob's like son but it's like no it's like you know that kid it's like so i can imagine how
weird that'd be to go on a date it's like you know the kid from jerry mcguire yeah i'm dating him
and it's like his name is jonathan he's an adult it just sucks because you don't want to be a story
you want to be a human being of course i didn't you know because you don't want to be a story. You want to be a human being. Of course. And I didn't – I never thought I would be a story until I had heard other things said about me from other people because people forget that LA is so small.
It is so small.
Oh my gosh.
My friends are protective of me.
So they hear something they tell me and they go, so-and-so is not.
You should cut that because they're saying this and that and this.
Now, you've done so many more movies now as an adult than as a kid.
How, so, okay, there was Jerry Maguire, Stuart Little.
What were the other, like, big ones you did as a kid?
Because I know those are the two.
Like Mike with Bow Wow.
Oh, yeah, that one.
The Little Vampire, which, like, shows a lot on Disney during Halloween.
I have seen that.
That was a fun little one.
And then I was on Dawson's Creek for a little while.
Stop it.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
I used to love that show.
When it came out, I felt like I was a little too young for it because there were so many
like sexual innuendos that I didn't get at the time.
And I'm like, I remember specifically there was a scene with like Dawson and Joey and
she was like asking him like what time he walks his dog or whatever.
And I was like, he doesn't have a walks his dog or whatever and i was like he
doesn't have a dog does he that's amazing oh i see what you're asking but it took me like watching
it back in reruns as an adult and i'm like oh now i get it and like certain other shows that like
even like melrose place 90210 back in the 90s like my mom would watch those and so i would watch them but there were so many things that i just didn't get and then when you
watch reruns you're like oh also dawson's creek they were the most well-spoken high schoolers
ever oh totally their vocabulary exceeded you know yeah scholars i know like like this is great
like they talked almost like poetically uh- was interesting. Good writing on that show.
What did you – what was your role on that?
Was it referring?
Yeah.
Pacey gets in trouble with the law and has to mentor a little bad kid.
Oh my god.
And I was the little bad kid.
And when I auditioned for Dawson's Creek, my sister, she's like, if you're really a good brother, you're going to book this.
Because she was obsessed with the show.
Yeah.
She was obsessed with Joshua Jackson.
And so she got to meet him and she was so excited and it was i told her i'm like see i'm a good brother that's so
awesome yeah that happened with me and my sister it was um 2009 yeah and i got an audition for the
jonas brothers show on disney and she was like you have to book this. And then it was like a very, very strict closed set
and I couldn't bring her.
But then we like ran into Joe one night at like dinner
and then she met Nick at an event.
And so it was like, it all came full circle.
But that was like, I wanted to book that so bad
for my sister.
And I'm like, and then she could go like back
to like sixth grade and be like,
my sister's working with the Jonas Brothers.
Yeah.
I remember you told me something when I met you about your sister was so – was it like 1D or someone that you introduced her to?
Oh, One Direction.
That she like lost her mind and was like so over the moon.
I remember you told me about this.
Yeah.
She used to be – it's so funny because she used to be like such a fangirl stalker.
Yeah.
And now it's like she's turning 21 this summer.
Super cool now.
She has a legit job.
She's on tour right now with Team 10 and Erica Costell.
That's great.
So she's doing this whole thing, and it's like she's a legit job.
Like she's really killing the game.
So who would you say is a dream actor to work with?
Actor, actress? Oh, man a there's a lot out there uh scarlett johansson her actress yeah i have a massive crush on her also she's very
talented but who doesn't right massive crush on her ever since i was a little kid yeah so i uh
i'd like to work with her okay actor um i mean's a lot. There's a lot of actresses here.
God.
It's hard to pick.
I'm a student and a fan of what I do.
Yeah.
Probably guys.
Sam Rockwell, big fan of.
I love Moon.
I love...
I'm really into Westworld right now.
So anybody on that show.
Yeah.
Love Westworld. I haven't seen the last episode, so don't say anything. Okay. No, no, no. So anybody on that show. Yeah. Love Westworld.
I haven't seen the last episode, so I don't want to say anything.
Okay.
No, no, no.
I haven't watched this season yet.
Yeah.
Probably Evan Rachel Wood.
She's so good, man.
She is so talented.
She's a force of nature.
Yeah.
You know, Ed Harris on that show, Jeffrey Wright.
Any of those people.
Oh, my.
Ed Harris.
He's so good.
So good.
But I mean, the list is always getting bigger of people that I want to work with because
I'm a fan at the end of the day.
I watch movies for fun.
There are people who even just seem like they'd be nice people that I want to work with because
I'm like, they just seem cool.
Would you want to be like a robot on Westworld?
Would that be like a dream job?
That'd be pretty fun.
That'd be so cool.
One of my friends, his name is Bryce Vine.
He's a singer, performer.
He's amazing.
One of my friends, his name is Bryce Vine.
He's a singer, performer.
He's amazing.
This morning, I have the Music Choice channel on, and his song came on.
And he did – his song is called Drew Barrymore, and he did a remix with Wale.
And the whole music video is like Westworld.
It's like these hot girl robots.
So you should check it out if you like Westworld. It's a really dope video.
So I know you're
really into like martial arts like is it jujitsu yeah brazilian jujitsu and muay thai so like i do
you know i go to a gym that does everything so mixed martial arts yeah what made you get into
that uh funny enough my mom really uh so i did like a little kid type karate thing and then the studio I was going to, the karate
studio closed.
But one of the young men there was like studying to be an MMA fighter and then he was like,
I'll train you and your son if you want.
So I started with jujitsu like originally when I was like seven years old.
Oh wow.
I didn't even know that was a thing back then.
Yeah.
I was a very early fan of MMA when it was called NHB, No Holds Barred. Oh, wow. And then I did – I didn't even know that was a thing back then. Yeah. I was a very early fan of MMA when it was called NHB, No Holds Barred.
Oh, okay.
I didn't even know that.
So I studied for a few years then, and then I took off time to do normal childhood stuff.
I even turned down a series once, series regular, to do Little League Baseball.
No way.
Because my parents were like, he's going to do what he wants, do what he wants which is awesome so cool what position did you play uh i played like center
field i played i played you know you're a little kid you play everything yeah uh i was second base
yeah i was the only girl on the all boys team that's awesome yeah baseball yeah so then i did
you know like childhood sports and then in high school i played water polo uh-huh and then one
of my friends started doing jujitsu in high school and i was like fell in love with it again yeah i
fell in love with it i quit water polo after junior year to focus on jujitsu i've competed in jujitsu
that's the one i've done the longest and then uh i've been getting really into muay thai the last
two years i train over um at saxon muay thai in uh van eyes out here oh cool there's some really
good people we have a few people in the UFC.
It's fun.
All these people are so driven to get their goals that it's really inspiring to be around. Yeah.
Would you ever do that professionally?
I'm not saying no and I'm not saying yes.
I love it so much.
I don't know.
There's this competitive thing still in me.
I love it.
It's fun.
I've been like, I really do it.
A lot of actors you see, not to shit on them for it, but
they go, you know, I do American martial arts, but they never get punched in the face.
Yeah.
I go and I get punched.
You get punched in the face?
Did you see the picture on my Instagram last week?
No.
So I'm, I'm newly back on Instagram.
Did you get brooded off?
No, I just chose to take a little siesta from it for a few months while vanderpump was airing it was just
it was a lot of negative yeah just yeah a lot of negativity and i was like you know what screw this
held it down deleted the app bye and um so i have it back now um and i've been back on it for um a
few weeks but i have it buried in a folder, so I'm not looking at it constantly.
Because I noticed that when I go to dinner with my friends, everyone's just like, dude, scrolling, double tap, scrolling.
And I'm like, get off your freaking phone.
So I don't have it on my main screen, so I don't see things as often.
But I wanted to get it back because I don't want to let the haters win i still love
the interaction with the positive fans and the people who are actually fans so after not having
it for a while i was just like this is weird i'm like i need to get it back so i'm i'm transitioning
back into it full time but i still like i don't see a lot of stories i don't see a lot of posts
because it's like i'll post and then i'm like okay bye and then i'll like check a little bit and i'll favorite some i'll answer some questions and i'm like okay bye so um i didn't see a lot of posts because it's like I'll post and then I'm like, okay, bye. And then I'll like check a little bit and I'll favorite some, I'll answer some questions and I'm like,
okay, bye. So I didn't see that, but now I gotta look that up. Yeah. Somebody's way better than
me. Punch me in the face. You know, I really do it. I really, and I'm striving to actually be
really good at it. It's one of my big goals in life. Nice. I'm looking this up right now. Boom.
my big goals in life nice i'm looking this up right now boom let's see oh shit that's my nose yeah that's that's a lot of blood and that was the second nosebleed of the day that was like
because one of my friends one of my friends the professional fighter was like you know this is
a great picture you should take a picture of that yeah i'm like you know what you're right
that it no it is it's a it's a good like artsy type of photo yeah no easy
days mm-hmm cool so what are you currently working on so I'm working with a really really really
talented uh Pulitzer finalist on uh a short right now that it was just kind of like a passion
project oh I think that's all I can say right now.
Okay.
Cause I don't want to,
but it's taken up a lot of my time kind of putting that together.
Yeah.
Um,
so you do producing as well,
right?
Yeah.
Um,
I produced a movie that came out in 2015 or 16,
2015 called altitude with Denise Richards and Dolph Lundgren.
Oh,
and I was in it.
I played a really flamboyant flight attendant.
Yeah.
Uh, so yeah, like I produced things here and there. I'm just Oh. And I was in it. I played a really flamboyant flight attendant. Yeah.
So yeah, I produced things here and there.
That's so awesome. I'm just really trying to learn about it because I didn't get into the film school I wanted
to get into at a high school.
Which one?
Loyola Marymount University.
Oh.
So if you're listening.
Yeah.
LMU.
And so I went and I just did it.
I think I produced three or four things now.
That's awesome.
And just trying to learn because why not?
Yeah.
And so – because I want to be a creator in the future and be able to do all this stuff I'm passionate about.
Totally.
Would you want to ever get into directing as well?
Maybe.
We'll see.
Yeah.
I started a little with writing.
I wrote a screenplay that I'm working on getting made right now.
But we'll see with directing.
I just want to get things really going with acting and with creating my own stuff and we'll see what happens.
Totally.
Probably at some point, hopefully.
Would you say acting is your biggest passion over producing now that you've started doing that as well?
I only produce so that I can do more acting.
I mean I definitely would produce stuff I don't act in.
Yeah.
But it all comes from that love of acting.
Okay.
So the things that you've been producing you're also acting in.
Yeah.
That's goals.
Yeah.
Seriously.
God, I wish I was a producer on my own shit.
That's why I love having a podcast.
Yeah, exactly.
Will and I.
It's good to make your own.
It's our control.
Yeah.
You can make your own content which is amazing.
And the great thing is it's not – if you want to do this in the 90s, buying a film camera, buying –
Oh, yeah.
It would be really expensive.
But you can put in your own money and especially if you are together with a good group of people, raise money.
And it doesn't have to be 50 million bucks to make something great.
Right.
Totally.
What's your favorite movie from the start to now that you've done?
That's a good question.
Honestly, it's not a movie.
It's the play you saw.
Oh.
So that was one of my, like, I don't own any of the movies I've done in my house.
It's just a thing I do.
But I have-
You need to borrow Jerry Maguire.
I have it on DVD.
It's good.
In the 20th anniversary, they sent me a bunch of Laserdiscs.
Oh, my god.
That's right.
They're not Laserdiscs.
DVDs.
I don't remember why I said Laserdiscs.
Yeah.
There were Laserdiscs to them.
But I just like gave them away.
I was like, I don't want to – but the play I did, it ended up getting published and doing
a run in New York.
And it's cool because you go to like Sam French or any bookshop that sells it.
And I'm in the book with originating the character.
That's so cool.
Which for me is like a little nerd theater goal that I'm pretty proud of.
So I have that framed in my house.
That's the only thing I own for my career.
That's awesome.
And that was I think some of the best work I've done in my life.
Yeah.
Now for my listeners who didn't see you in that play, what was it called?
It was called Lost Girls.
Okay.
And it was just a really great play to do.
It's the same writer who just wrote Stronger with Jake Gyllenhaal.
Oh, wow.
And you saw it.
It was a really interesting play.
Yeah, for sure.
No, it was great.
About real people dealing with real stuff.
Yes, definitely.
Was I naked the time you came or no?
I don't remember that.
Yeah, I was naked for the first week and then they cut it out.
No, it wasn't the first week.
Okay, because I was full frontal.
Oh, no, I definitely would have remembered that.
Yeah.
I'm always curious to see because when someone's like, oh, I saw your play, I'm like, what week?
Right?
My friends are so cheap that they were like, we'll go for previews because it's cheaper.
But silly them, that's when I was naked and they were front row.
That's so funny.
Oh, my God.
Do you prefer theater or film, one or the other?
Film is where I want to have the largest part of my career.
I just, you know, that being my favorite project was just because of the material I got to work with.
And the fact that I could really show what I, you know, how far I've come as an artist and be able to, you know,
do that with a really interesting character because I got to do kind of the full range
of emotions in that play.
Yeah.
That's so cool.
And be naked.
Yeah.
I had a similar experience in Vegas the past five months.
I heard it was amazing.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
I wasn't full frontal, but a lot of articles of clothing came off at the end. I heard it was amazing. I'm sorry. Yeah, I wasn't full frontal, but a lot of articles of clothing came off at the end.
I heard it was amazing, by the way.
It was so much fun.
You know, Salem, our mutual friend.
Yeah.
So I go to acting class with Salem.
I still go to class.
Love it.
You know, improving a lot.
He was part of the show one night.
Yeah, really?
Yeah, I pulled him and Janet on stage.
And he's very honest, and he's like, no, man, it was great yeah he was like he was really impressed i miss it it was so much fun it went by so quick
and i hadn't really done theater since like college i graduated college in 06 i've done some
stuff with um tmi like some like improv and like sketch comedy and like that stuff and that was a lot of fun i i actually i really
want to get back into that i'm meeting with um my old theatrical manager soon and i just after
doing that i got the acting bug again yeah and now that i'm talking to you i'm just like i really
like i know that's always been my passion as has something like this i mean i graduated with
studying theater communication studies broadcast journalism so it's fun to get into it you know it's great because you already have a fan base
and and yeah it's not the traditional way to get into it but i don't think that really i mean we
just had kim meet with the president yeah what's what's tradition anymore in this world we have a
reality star meeting with another reality star who's the president getting like someone pardoned and it's yeah yeah I
love though I will say I I'm obsessed with the Kardashians but I love so much
how they use their platform to help the world like literally I mean they've
helped this woman they do a lot of work with the homeless like they do so many
amazing things people were so busy are hating on that that they didn't realize
that wait a second, she's
actually really using this platform for something great.
Yeah.
And that's what bugged me is because we're such a hater.
And I think it's brought on us by social media.
We're such a hater generation.
Yeah.
But yeah, you can do something like that and that can now translate to doing something
more serious or whatever.
I did a dating show.
Okay.
I was going to ask you about that right here.
Europe dating show.
Crossing that off the list.
Tell me about it.
That was an experience.
It was called Celebs Go Dating.
Ooh.
Celebs go on dates with normal people.
I was not naked in this.
Okay.
But that was an interesting experience.
I actually – I met a girl and she came back and was hanging out, you know, here in L.A. for two weeks.
And it ended up not really working out, you know, long distance.
She had a whole life and a whole career back home and she –
In the U.K.?
Yeah.
But it was a really, really fun experience.
I just went on a bunch of dates.
Yeah.
I had the best time.
So you're just dating a bunch of different girls?
You know, I –
Were you like the U.K. bachelor?
I stuck with one girl.
She was the one thread kind of I had throughout the show that I stuck with one girl through she was the one thread kind
of i had throughout the show that i stuck with her but i went on other dates too and uh there
was like a singles mixer and it was it was wild yeah it was fun i made some great friends uh
yeah and it was it was just a crazy thing because that was my first experience with my relationship
being in any sort of like publication yeah and that And that's not – I don't know anything about that.
And I know you know nothing about that.
No.
And so that is – when you were talking about the haters, when it was airing, like I would
have – and then especially when they found out that we weren't dating anymore and the
way in which they found out, they found out because they thought I was dating someone
else and I wasn't.
Oh my gosh.
And so then it was even worse.
Right.
And then they were calling my friend a homewrecker and going on her, going on her Instagram. I've been called that. Yeah. It's
not fun. No, 12 years later, I'm still a homewrecking whore, but whatevs. Yeah. So yeah,
that was, that was something I'd never dealt with before, um, with my relationship or like my
private life in that sense. Would you do another reality show if you were asked? Dep know i wanted to just do it it sounded fun because it's dating and i'm like you
know what i'm not doing it was during the holidays i wasn't the industry shuts down it only airs in
the uk i was like you know what sounds like a fun time yeah single do it i don't know if i'd do it
again i think it was a great experience that i had it yeah uh gives you you know texture you know
having that like those crazy memories and it gives me a lot of inspiration for other things that I might create.
But I don't know.
It's a whole other world.
It's interesting.
And I got really lucky with the edit.
Knocks on wood.
Knocks on wood.
I feel like I got portrayed pretty honestly.
See, you're lucky for that because a lot of people –
I defend you all the time, by the way.
Oh, thank you.
People will say something if they see a picture and mostly it's good.
Yeah.
But there will be some people and I'm like, fuck you.
She's nice.
Well, thanks.
Yeah.
You know what else is good?
I got my friends back.
I appreciate that.
I can tell you about something else that's good.
Yeah.

But I appreciate that.
I love when people have my back and actually know me because it's frustrating when I'm on a show with an ensemble cast.
It's not the Sheena show.
So you're just seeing bits and pieces, and people so you're just you're seeing bits and pieces and
people are judging you on those very small bits and pieces and i'm like no but but then i did
that's why i got off social media for a while because i was just getting so defensive where
i was like no no but what really happened is this and what you didn't see was this and
in this conversation and my mom was like sheena you're looking like a crazy person and i was like
i'm deleting this shit yeah i got that with the relationship where it was like they said or it wasn't even
really a relationship and they're like
they thought that I cheated on her and all this
and it feels you feel so helpless because you want
to defend yourself be like we were done
before the show ended yeah
and then things aired so much
later yeah someone aired so much later you know
or no we stayed together throughout the
filming the show but by the show ending
airing airing right youiring, right. Yes.
And you want to defend yourself so bad, but at the end of the day, your mom's right.
You can't.
No, you can't win.
You can never please everyone.
You're never going to win.
So I just didn't comment on a lot of the stuff with her.
It's hard because you want to.
You're like, no, I'm an okay person.
But I'm glad.
Not that I would let it change me, but I'm glad I met you before I ever have seen an episode of it.
Yes.
And then I was like, you know what?
She's so nice.
Yeah.
And you don't get the real – it isn't really always the real thing.
A lot of the time it really isn't.
It's just you're just seeing a fraction of it.
And it's not even like editing.
Like I will never blame editing for anything.
I'm like if I said it, I said it.
Yeah.
But I'm like trying to have people understand that.
I'm like, yeah, but do you think that those two scenes in one episode was my whole life
for the whole week?
Like, I'm just trying to give people perspective.
Yeah.
I'm never trying.
They're like, oh, stop blaming editing.
I'm like, I'm not.
I'm just saying like.
Or the circumstances in which that happened.
Because if you are nice to people for five scenes on the show.
Right.
And then you're mean for two, what are they going to you know or like something argument happens what are they gonna use yeah
oh this industry i'm in it's it's crazy and because things do air so much later like
we so my ex-boyfriend and i we broke up two weeks after filming wrapped last summer
the show we broke up in august the show didn't start airing till december it just stopped airing in may so this whole time like that we're not together
we're still together on the show and i'm just like i i was trying to stay friends with them and it
was just getting to be too difficult and i'm just like we're not even together anymore and then i
just finally just saying friends with him yeah that friends with him? Yeah. That's so funny.
It doesn't work.
Because I feel like, you know, I felt like that happened in my situation too where it wasn't either of us adding tension.
But because of the tension of the show, it made us be, you know, a little more argumentative than we probably would have been.
Yeah.
I just had to cut it off.
It wasn't healthy for me to try and stay friends with someone I was still at the time in love with. So, yep. So anyway, um, if you could go anywhere in the world and
shoot a movie for a month, where would you go? That is a great question. Um, you know,
it's going to sound so lame and I've traveled a lot, so don't judge me on this, but there's something about shooting in New York.
Yeah, I love New York.
And I've shot there a few times.
Yeah.
There's something about shooting there that is so – you get picked – like your energy gets picked up in the big city and you're like seeing Broadway shows on the weekend and really enjoying it.
I shot the second Stuart Little out there and I shot two movies out there in 2015.
Oh, cool.
And I just had the best time.
I just love that life, you know?
Yeah.
Especially when you don't have to pay for it.
Definitely.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so it was a really great city.
Yeah.
And it's really fun to work in.
It's my favorite city in the country.
I feel like Hawaii is just its own thing,
so I never count Hawaii because that's my favorite place. But I. I feel like Hawaii is just its own thing. So I never count Hawaii because that's like my favorite place.
But I'm like in America, New York, I would love to just like go and like be able to film something there just to have a reason to live there for a short period of time.
I couldn't do the seasons.
Yeah.
But I get it.
I love New York.
It was amazing.
Yeah.
And I want to do that again and again and again.
Yeah.
There's just something about that city. Yeah. I feel so inspired all the time. Yeah. And I want to do that again and again and again. Yeah. There's just something about that city.
Yeah.
I feel so inspired all the time.
Totally.
I think it would be weird for me being in New York, a city where you don't have a car, really.
You don't drive.
Because how much time do we spend in traffic?
Yeah.
It's crazy.
Three quarters of my day.
Yeah.
Awesome.
Well, this has been fun.
Thank you.
Thank you for coming.
Thanks for having me. Yeah. I've learned been fun. Thank you. Thank you for coming. Thanks for having me.
Yeah.
I learned some new things about you.
Can you tell everyone where they can find you on social media?
You can find me very little bit on Twitter at JLipNicky.
Then I'm not smart, so I made my Instagram different.
My Instagram is JonathanLipNicky.
I'm very active on my Instagram.
Put up a lot of pictures of my dog. Denny? Yeah. Denny Lipnicki. I'm very active on my Instagram. Put up a lot of pictures of my dog.
Denny?
Yeah.
Denny Lipnicki.
Nice.
That crazy guy.
Does Denny have his own Instagram?
My roommate made one for him.
That's awesome.
One night he just texted me
and he's drunk and he's like,
dude, I made him an Instagram.
Or that's at least how I hope
he sounded when he said it.
And I looked and it was hilarious.
It was like really sassy captions.
I'm like, whoa, you went all out.
That's so awesome.
So I don't actually run the Denny Lipnicki fan account.
Okay.
Model, influencer.
I like it.
I'm going to have to follow.
Yeah.
I'm going to have to follow your dog.
I got to unfollow someone to follow though.
I'm very OCD.
Oh, yeah?
I follow 420.
So that's like my number.
It's been my number for like five years.
Yeah. I never change it. So whenever someone's like, can you follow me on Instagram? that's like my number. It's been my number for like five years.
Yeah.
I never change it.
So whenever someone's like, can you follow me on Instagram?
I'm like, that depends.
Can I unfollow someone?
Yeah, exactly.
