Hey there!
You're listening to Simples Swedish Podcast.
My name is Fredrik and I'm your world in this podcast.
Today I'm pretty tired because I didn't sleep well.
But I hope you it's not noticed so much.
I hope that I don't sound as tired as I feel.
And today I'm going to talk about a little philosophical question,
a little hypothetical question, because here today, Here the other day, my internet stopped working.
Both the wifi here at home had been working a bit like this.
And when I was out and when I was at the gym, my mobile data didn't work either. And I have two SIM cards and none of them worked.
The mobile data didn't work on any SIM card.
So I thought, shit.
So Wi-Fi works like that at home and now nothing works from my SIM cards that are mobile data.
So I thought shit, think about if the internet has stopped working.
And then I started thinking a little bit like, what would happen if the internet actually stopped working?
So I have googled it and I was going to talk about it today. So first I'm going to thank the new Patrons.
They are Elif, Moosab, Elena, Ian, Hannes, Elsa, P2121,
Arthur and Gina.
All Patrons get a transcript for all episodes.
And yes, my gratitude also that you support this podcast.
And today I was going to talk in a more regular tempo, because many people thought that it was good when I talked in a more regular tempo.
I will of course continue to have episodes that are in a more slow tempo, but also episodes that are in a more
regular tempo. So that you can practice on both of them.
So, first and foremost, can the internet actually stop working? And yes, of course, it can happen. Everything can happen. Murphy's Law
knows what it is.
But, yes, fortunately
the internet is clearly
very stable.
Yes, of course, everyone knows that
there is no... the internet
doesn't have a main
machine. It's not one
thing that's in one place with some
kind of off and on button or one single cable that you can just cut and then the internet dies.
The internet is not one thing, it's a gigantic network of different machines and cables. cables and so on. So, for the internet to stop working,
on the whole, something very big needs to happen,
some kind of gigantic catastrophe. Like a nuclear war
or a meteorite hitting the earth or something like that.
So, of course, I hope it can't happen. When I thought about this, I thought that it's a war in Europe and there's more and more potential for escalation. And then there is of course a lot of cyber warfare that can happen.
And I don't know how much, how much harm you can do on the internet if you wanted to.
But the articles I read, there it was that it was quite, it was very, that it would be quite necessary for it to happen.
But if we assume that it actually happens, that the internet just completely collapses and stops working all over the world,
what would happen then?
Yes, of course, it would be total chaos. Because first and foremost, all technology
in principle, is dependent on the internet
so all smartphones,
all apps,
all communication
except for like SMS
and phone calls.
But,
you use the same infrastructure
for the internet
as you use for phone calls.
So if the internet stops working, then it's a big risk that phone calls would stop working.
But in any case, even if phone calls and text messages still work, like the GSM network and such, then it would be very, very...
Yeah, it would be much, much harder with communication.
Yeah, mail would also work, of course, and of course all streaming services,
no more Netflix, no more...
And also systems for electricity electricity, hospitals, logistics.
Everything would just stop working.
And the global economy would collapse very quickly.
After a few months, or a few weeks, or maybe just a a few days or maybe a few hours.
No one knows, I guess.
And yes, of course the stock market, that is, the stock market,
that's where you trade with stocks and stuff, like Dow Jones and things like that.
The stock market would of course collapse.
You can't pay with credit cards, so you would have to pay with
cash. But you can't get cash in order to stop the bank and the food from working
and the banks from working. So if you need cash to pay, but it would be very difficult to get hold of cash.
So all trade would more or less collapse.
And of course everything that has crypto and blockchain.
And in all...
It would be very difficult to get hold of everything.
So after just a few days, food would run out,
because food stores can't buy in food,
because logistics have collapsed, that you can't get fuel, factories don't work.
And most of all companies would stop, wouldn't be a total collapse of the entire society, I suppose.
But, after a while, of course, people would adapt.
Because people always solve all problems that come. But it would of course be a big catastrophe.
I read in an article that said that about one billion people would probably die of
swelling and there would probably be a lot of conflicts and stuff.
And the global economy would go back 100 years.
It would go back to the 1930s.
So, yeah, we hope it doesn't happen.
Because it doesn't sound that fun.
But on a more philosophical level,
you can ask yourself,
isn't it that people spend a lot of time on the internet,
in front of screens, on social media and it's not so good for
the mental health and you are distracted all the time, people are not feeling well,
there is a lot of disinformation and so on. So wouldn't it be good if the internet stopped working and people had to go back to how it was before, when people felt better mentally? I absolutely don't think so, because of course there are a lot of problems.
But honestly, I think the internet is a bit of a miracle.
I mean, no one has been able to predict the Internet. I mean, the people who wrote science fiction,
and philosophers, and people who lived 100 years ago,
no one has been able to imagine something
that is similar to the Internet.
There is someone who has written a book where they imagined a way for people to communicate with people all over the world.
But generally, the internet is not something that has been before the internet.
No one before has been able to imagine something like the Internet.
And just the fact that we can have all the world's information in our hands and communicate with everyone.
There is so much potential for humanity thanks to the internet. Instead of thinking that we should go back,
I think that we should solve the problems that exist
and move forward instead.
There is so of potential. I am an optimist and I believe in people. It's pretty easy to be pessimistic.
I believe that people have a kind of survival instinct so that you automatically focus a lot more on the negative. Because thousands of years ago, we needed to focus on the negative to survive.
So we were always forced to focus on the positive.
There is a crazy amount of potential, especially now with AI, artificial intelligence. I saw recently that there was a mother who had a child who
had a disease and she had been to a lot of different doctors and no one had found out
what was wrong with her son., nobody could have diagnosed him.
And then she had asked for a chat GPT.
And chat GPT gave the son a correct diagnosis and now there is hope for that.
And generally there is a lot of potential to be in that field, like medicine, to use artificial intelligence.
It is available in all fields.
I personally believe that this will lead to the development of technology to accelerate and accelerate so that we can't even think of what is possible in
just maybe ten years. And I'm completely sure that if we don't
root ourselves out, if we don't destroy ourselves, we will be guaranteed to go out into space and explore the universe.
It's like super science fiction, but it feels 100% possible.
So, that was a little philosophical detachment there.
Before we end for today, I just wanted to say that I have two products that I'm very proud of, that I think are very good products.
One is Strong Swedish.
It's a course that you can take where you learn how to become independent in your studies
and how to reach an advanced level in Swedish.
And it's both content that you can read and listen to, which is interesting,
so you actually learn a lot of new words and so on.
But it also includes how you learn, so you learn how to learn, which is very important.
And these are things that I have learned from my own experience
during the almost 15 years that I have learned the language.
And the other thing is language gym, which I have been focusing on for the past few months.
These two products are actually very good to combine.
Strong Swedish is a course you can take at your own pace.
You have access to it for the rest of your life.
It's focused on input, reading, listening and learning how to learn.
Language Gym is focused on speaking, having conversations and practicing speaking.
So it's actually a very good combination, these two.
So if you're interested in Strong Swedish, go to my website, SwedishLinguist.com.
If you're interested in Language Gym, go to LanguageLockin.com. And if you're interested in transcript of advertising at the end, so I'm going to end here.
I hope you liked this episode. If you are a patron, please comment this.

What do you think? What do you think would happen if the internet stopped working?
Do you think the internet is good for us or would you rather see a world without internet?
