Välkommen till The Simple Swedish Podcast. Jag vet inte, jag känner att jag säger samma sak varje gång. Hej hej, välkommen till The Simple Swedish Podcast.

Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, hello! Welcome to the Simple Swedish Podcast. I don't know, I new to say in the beginning. Or should I keep saying the same thing? Today we will talk about allergies. So I will first just say what an allergy is. The body has its immune defense. The immune defense is a system in the body that will defend the body against dangerous substances. For example, when there is a bacteria or a virus, the immune system reacts and to the non-dangerous and form antibodies against the non-dangerous. Antibodies are what the body is making up against, for example, the virus. So the first time a new virus enters the body, the body gets in contact with the virus, the immune system can react very quickly.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Because there are already antibodies against it. So then the body starts to build up a lot of new antibodies. But, yes, allergies are when the body or immune system builds antibodies against completely harmless substances. And that can be, for example, pollen. So pollen is a very, very common substance to be allergic to. You can also be allergic to fur animals. Fur is the hair that animals have.
Starting point is 00:02:56 So we call it fur. For example, dogs, cats, they have fur. And it is common to be allergic to fur. You can also be allergic to quails. Quails are tiny, tiny animals. Tiny means very, very small, so tiny tiny little animals that can be found for example in the bed and yes it is common to be allergic to quails. You can also be allergic to mold. Mold is a kind of fungus, but it is very, very small. And if you leave food for example for many days, then it can start growing If it is humid in the air, there is a lot of water in the air, then it can cause mold and you can be allergic to it. You can also be allergic to different types of food, for example nuts and often especially nuts.
Starting point is 00:04:46 It can also be dairy protein or eggs. There are a lot of different types of food that you can be allergic to. And you say that you are allergic to something. is allergic to something. So what can happen if you are allergic and you get it in yourself this subject? So hurt your stomach, you can get diarrhea, or you can feel sick. To feel sick means that you have a feeling that you want to puke, that you want to puke. So that is to feel bad. You can also get symptoms on the skin, like the skin is exposed, nails and like, tear it, tear it, you have something that tears, you need to...
Starting point is 00:06:34 For example on the skin. It can also tear in the mouth, or in the nose, or in the eyes. or in the nose or in the eyes. You can also get asthma. Asthma is that you have difficulty breathing. You get tight in the throat. The airways may swell. That something swells means that it grows, it becomes swollen, it swells. So if the airways swell, then you get tight in the throat, so you have difficulty breathing asthma. And that can be quite dangerous if you have a serious allergy and you have asthma,
Starting point is 00:07:30 then it can be quite dangerous. Lips can also swell and other parts of the body can swell and you can get runny eyes, that the eyes can start to run, that there will be a lot of liquid, a lot of, that the eyes are running. You can also get a sneeze, also common with pollen allergy. Sneeze means that it runs from the nose. Then you have a sneeze. You can also sneeze. To sneeze is achoo, achoo. To sneeze. To sneeze is also common in pollen allergies. You feel that there is pollen in the air and then maybe you sneeze. It is also common with allergies. I often react to a lot of dust in a room for example. Damp, what is damp? Damp is these very, very, very small particles in the air
Starting point is 00:09:12 and that are everywhere. So if you don't vacuum often, then it becomes very damp. Often it becomes very dusty. I know that I react to that. If there is a lot of dust in a room, if there is a lot of textile, fabric and such, then it often becomes a bit dusty. And then that is also what the qualms live on.
Starting point is 00:09:47 So if you have a qualms allergy, it's not good to have a damp room. And then I can start to sneeze. And it can also I can also get a little tight in my throat. I don't get difficult to breathe, but I feel tight in my throat. Like that.
Starting point is 00:10:18 There are people who can also end up in an allergic shock. And that is an extra serious allergic reaction. And that can be very dangerous. And then you need an so-called EpiPen. an so called EpiPen. Okay, I might have to tell the dog to stop barking. And you can also end up in so called allergic shock. It is a very serious allergic reaction.
Starting point is 00:11:09 And then it is a danger to life so it can be very dangerous and then you can need a spray with adrenaline. There is something called Epipen so it is a kind of spray with adrenaline. If you get an allergic shock, it can save your life to take the spray with adrenaline. I know it happened once when I worked at the hotel in Turkey. I didn't see that myself, but it was clearly in the restaurant that there was a person who got an allergic shock and another person had an EpiPen and gave this spray with adrenaline to the person with an allergic shock and maybe saved her life. the sensitive to something, then you are not allergic. Because allergy means that the body forms antibodies to an object. But if you are over-sensitive, then it does not mean that immune defense forms antibodies, but it is simply that you are extra sensitive or you are intolerant. You have an intolerance. For example, against lactose. So it's pretty common to be lactose intolerant. You can also be
Starting point is 00:12:56 over sensitive to strong scents. For example, perfume or deodorants, etc. So you can be overly sensitive to strong scents. And, as I said, I personally am a pollen allergy so sometimes I need to take some pills. But most of the time it's totally okay. But if you get an allergy, there are often medicines. You can take pills, for example. I also have people in my family who are allergic to fur.
Starting point is 00:13:49 I also want to say something that is interesting for allergies. There are more and more, especially in the western world, who have allergies. So in Sweden, for example, in the fifties, there was only one percent who had asthma, and now it is ten percent who have asthma. And if they have looked at, tribes that live in the wild, traditionally, there is one in 1,500 people who have allergies. But in Sweden, there one out of four. So one person out of 1500 people against one person out of four people who have allergies.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And that's a huge difference. And you don't know exactly why. It's so much more common now and in the West world with allergies. But it is clear that it to a lot of different animals, they have much less allergies than children who grow up in the city. And it is also the case that people who move from countries that are perhaps poorer, more traditional, where they live
Starting point is 00:15:45 closer to nature and so on. Many people who move from such places to more rich, more well developed, or what to say, they often develop allergies. So it has absolutely to do with being much more in nature and among animals, because there are much more different microorganisms and bacteria and a lot of that. organisms and bacteria and a lot of that. But yes, we need more research on that. And clearly the only thing you know with certainty is that you should not smoke near their children. So if children grow up and get to breathe smoke, then they have a much greater risk of developing allergies. So yes, I hope this episode was interesting and that you have learned some new words,
Starting point is 00:17:11 such as fur, quails, snuff, to swallow, to lick and so on. If you are a patron on the 10 euro level, then you will get access to our private chat.
