Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to this week's easy episode of Simple Swedish Podcast. Today we will talk about getting married and about marriage. So what is it to get married? What does it mean to get married? So if we have a couple, a man and a woman, or two men, two women, it can be anything, but two women, it can be anything, but a couple that have been together for a while, so they have been together for a long time maybe, and they feel that now we want to live the rest of our lives together. So when you decide to live together for the rest of your life, then perhaps one of these people asks his partner, Do you want to marry me? Often it is the man who asks the woman,
Starting point is 00:01:38 Do you want to marry me? And this partner says yes or no. med mig. Ja, och den här partnern säger då ja eller nej. Ja, jag vill jättegärna gifta mig med dig. Ja, att fråga om någon vill gifta sig med en, det kallas att fria. Så han friade till henne It is called to free. So He freed her means he asked if she wanted to marry him. So to free. Yes. And In Sweden
Starting point is 00:02:22 Sweden is traditionally a Christian country. So many people are not so religious anymore. But traditionally Sweden is a Christian country. Sweden's religion is Christianity and one gets married in the church. So the church is the place where one gets married and one has a priest. So the priest is the person who marries the couple who gets married. It is called that you vows the couple. So the priest vows the couple in the church and yes, to vow is a kind of ritual. So the priest, everyone is standing there in the church and the couple who are getting married are standing there
Starting point is 00:03:34 and the priest says a lot of different words and you do this ritual and this ritual is the vogue,, that the priest vices the couple. And the priest says, for example, in the end, Do you take this, and the name of the person, Do you take this Erik Andersson to your husband to love in need and desire. And then this party gets to say yes. And then the husband says to the woman, take youin Jakobsson, Erik Andersson, to your real husband and love in need and desire,
Starting point is 00:04:35 then they say yes, and the priest says, I explain to you your real husbands and you can kiss the bride. Bride. The woman is called here for bride. The woman who gets married is called bride and she has a wedding dress on and the man is called Brudgum. And all of this, the ceremony, the viksen and this party that is after the viksen, after the Vigsen, the ceremony, the ritual in the church is first the Vigsen and after that it is a party. You eat and drink and all people are invited. Sometimes it's a big party, sometimes small, but all this this is called a wedding. So a wedding is this whole thing with the wedding, the ceremony and everything.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Sometimes people have a big wedding, sometimes aöllop, but it's called bröllop. And the most fun thing about a bröllop is of course the bröllopsfest, because there everyone gathers and you go around and you eat and you drink and you have it nice. So it is of course fun to come to the wedding. And at the wedding party it is common for people to hold a speech. that people speak. So to speak means that you speak in front of all people, in front of all guests, in front of all invited people. So you speak, you maybe tell some anecdotes from life with these people who get married with the bridegroom. It's called the bridegroom. The couple who get married is called a bridegroom. And after the wedding, the bridegroom often goes on a wedding trip.
Starting point is 00:07:48 The month after the wedding is called the honeymoon. The honeymoon, the first month after the wedding, after you have married. After you have married, you are a man and a wife. So the man is called man. You say my husband. And the woman is called wife. But it is much more common to say wife. So you say my wife. You can say my wife. Wife sounds a bit formal. So it's more common to say wife. So my husband, my wife.
Starting point is 00:08:34 And there is a program on SVT Play called Gifts called the gift at the first cast. So I recommend you to watch that. It's pretty fun. It's a bit of a social experiment. So on SVT Play, the gift at the first cast. It's a reality show. This was this week's easy episode of Simple Swedish Podcast.
Starting point is 00:09:12 I hope you've learned some new words such as to get married, to get a wedding, a bride, a bridegroom, a honeymoon. So, yes, we'll see you soon again. Have a great time!
