I'm Dan Tuberski.
In 2011, something strange began to happen at a high school in upstate New York.
A mystery illness, bizarre symptoms, and spreading fast.
What's the answer?
And what do you do if they tell you it's all in your head?

I just kind of moved in with him instantly because it was the solution to my life.
And it felt like this is the jackpot right now.
I have a place I can crash and it's close to the casino.
I have cocaine and I have some guy that is into me.
I was in a halfway house and my world just felt so small.
There was no vision of having a normal life.
I didn't really make goals for myself or anything
because I really felt like he was going to find me and kill me.
In my purity document, I was like,
I promise that I'm not going to hang out with a boy alone.
I promise that I'm going to find an accountability partner
and I'm going to check in with them every single week
about my purity and my thoughts.
I promise to not masturbate.
When she asked me what the cult was that I was a part of, I told her Bethel and her face
fell.
I was in court for child abuse on my 11th birthday. I remember going in the chambers
speaking to the judge and he said, well, you look fine to me, I don't see any marks.
And it was so, so dismissive.
So if a judge doesn't believe me, I don't stand a chance.
I want her to listen to it
and I want her to hear every single thing she did.
Do you know what she used to always say to me?
Whenever I was leaving the house,
she would say, keep your mouth shut,
what happens in this house stays in this house loose lips sink ships so I'm going to write
her a letter that says loose lips sink ships and that's it.
He's on no sex registry yet he has this prevalent history of doing this over and over again.
He's just free. The only thing I've seen is him get arrested for like drug or domestic violence, but not
murder.
He's already done it once, at least.

In this series, we look at J Edgar Hoover.
He was the director of the FBI for half a century.
An immensely powerful political figure, he was said to know everything about everyone.
He held the ear of eight presidents and terrified them all.
When asked why he didn't fire Hoover, JFK replied, you don't fire God.
From chasing gangsters to pursuing communists
to relentlessly persecuting Dr. Martin Luther King
and civil rights activists,
Hoover's dirty tricks tactics have been endlessly echoed
in the years since his death.
And his political playbook
still shapes American politics today.
