Stone Clearing With Richard Herring - Chapter 144
Episode Date: July 6, 2023Chapter 144 - Difappointing Fcotch Thiftle. It's 6.14pm on Wednesday 5th July 2023 and there's a chance of rain and petrichor, but Richard has had one soaking this week, and is prepared to risk it to ...emulate a young Theresa May. And he may be quickly out of breath, but he has a new energy that has escaped him for the rest of the year, so it's the partially long way round today. He will teach you how to navigate a pathless Stocean and also the danger of shortening your borders and there's a surprise and a moral at the stone pole (buy tickets to RHLSTP to counteract the curse - http://richardherring.com/rhlstp). It's a great ep to sleep to and nothing really got lost when the recording got paused, so all is as it should be.

Stone clearing with Richard Herring when you do 12 things, 12 times, you get 144. And of course, back in the day, stone clearing
was all counted in the system of 12, duo-decent, maloosing, not the decimal, do you a decadere, denoms?
Not the decimal system, so this is very exciting.
It is of course, that's 16 p.m.
on the 5th of July.
We're one week away from a very important day
in the Stenforing Canada, 12th of July.
Port of Dayton, the stone tree in Canada, 12th of July. The legend tree, the date coming of the stone Messiah, they said he would come on July
the 12th. He would arrive. Obviously, if it was coming, that could be any of the stone-tlerers, but not for me to say
whether I am that man or women, probably man.
But that's my birthday, are we 56 years young? That's 12 times
For a little bit
Yeah
Nearly five times and it's getting that way
But you can't count everything in 12, sometimes you have to count on the system given to you by your fingers. Sometimes you just have to count how many stones there
are and there won't be neatly divided into groups if it doesn't. A Duffin, that's it
was caught. Oh, it's looking beautiful out here. Oh shit, it went over. All right, we're
okay. I'm going to that age where having a fall is a distinct possibility. It's very hard
to find any stony of the Afronomigican. I don't know where the Afronomigican even is. I've
got two bits of shrapnel. Orf is done away, and then they go. Right, I think they're a little
bit more lively this week, but it's up here for me. You know, if you've been there every day listening
to my wisdom, but have a meal for a lot of this year, just annoying stuff like bugs, nothing,
have a meal for a lot of this year just annoying stuff like bugs nothing no campfire no cancorr
but just this week feeling a little bit more lively what vehicle we did
and I've enjoyed walking along this path the wheat is growing on both sides
some of the stray wheat seeds have fallen to the left
most have fallen to the right on the field on the stosh and but some sometimes you can walk
through and you can feel it sort of soft but slightly prickly and I know how a young Theresa
made felt now but I've not run through the centre of the wheat field.
I'm not a monster like her, but I've walked through the path that's going between the wheat.
And look, I'm just stepping over now into a barren area of wheat, which is very full of stones.
We have to clear some stones. It's in the title of the podcast.
So I'll get rid of a few of those bits of shrapnel every little help it's not all work work work
except when you stone clearing there's loads there yeah it's good there's a
ready supply of stones some people have emailed in worried and doing such a good
job out here in the way.
The stones that the podcast might soon end because you know I've cleared so many stones,
but the news for those people, good news I would say is at least another 12 podcasts
in this.
Before we could even start climbing to clear the field. I mean, I barely bit into anywhere
around the part from the edge and there's still loads of stones here so you know, all in
all, even with a really good few days of stone clearing. I don't think it's over yet. We'll keep going of course until the field is defeated or until
I be dead when that will be buried with my stones. Left to wonder whether I wasted my life
or you wasted yours. It's you. You sitting there listening to my clearing stones when you
could be clearing stones when you could be clearing
stones yourself and let your arc clear and say, oh look at that, there's a nice medium
just sitting there. And a small but perfectly formed. Look at that, that's just lying there,
not even you have to dig it up. How long has that been there for? Just a month, maybe
pushed up by the wheat itself and it's going
into the little brambly bit there. I don't know what kind of can is developing
under there but one day people will find out the blackberries growing nicely.
The green at the moment was still...
What's the blossom? Still blossom, blossom, but soon I'll be right for the
pick-in, right for the plucking and she's 16 and ready for high school, come on
well that's not appropriate anymore is it, nowadays that was an appropriate borderline but things have moved on.
Thank goodness.
Oh yes, nice stones here. Just checking now. It's hard to be. It's hard to be sure you're not being observed.
With the wheat as this high. I'm looking forward to some black
pineapple pies. And I'm not going to Edinburgh this year so I can be out here
picking berries or the live long long. My wife is going to Edinburgh and imagine
all the things I'm going to get when she's away for ten days. Oh man I'll be clear in some stones on those days. That I can promise you my
friend. We out here day noon and dusk. Except when I've got to look after the kids. But they're going
up halfway through so I'll have four or five days completely on my own. Imagine what I'm going to be
up to. When I, when that happens, it's going to be a mainly sleeping. I. Imagine what I'm going to be up to when I when
that happens. It's going to remain me sleeping. I have to say I'm very much
looking forward to just lying in bed till midday. Oh how my priorities have
changed. Here's the nice bit where we're starting to get the wheat on both sides.
I don't know if you can sense that from the way my hands are touching. And the wheat is not so that high actually. If I reach my hand down, if you
can imagine that my hand is basically just brushing the top of the top, ten centimeters
of the wheat. It's beautiful. It's just the right height for that.
And now this is it. We're entering the pleasure dome if you like touching wheat.
Isn't it euphemism for needing the toilet? I like it. Just like touching wheat. It's a
bad place. So it's the wheat is so packed. It's a very bad place for picking up stones.
Now, still looking.
There's a couple of thistles there.
I love the thistles.
I don't know if it's legal to dig up those thistles
and then plant them in your garden.
That means essentially a weed, I think, no offense
to the catch people listening.
But is it protected? I know. would it be the dumb thing to put some
of those in a potty new garden because I love them and because I am partly scotch, my family
hails from Ireland, Scotland and Wales and Vikings as well, back in the day. So maybe that's what my affinity to those pistols are.
I don't know if they're many, but I'll get a picture of that.
Wasn't a very good one the past. They're really by the horse field.
It's not stone clearing area. It's amazing. There's John Nettles there.
Nettles and it's touching wheat, touching wheat, looking for stones. Some may call me a dreamer.
It was pissing down rain here last night, I got really soaked in the wheat, you know, it keeps the moisture in,
so if you walk through like something like this, just your trousers trousers are wet you have a tunnel accident
and yes it's gone too much to bear but so like I say just feeling more energetic I know it's
sorry if I've been dragging it down with my malaise
hopefully with the right tunnel at the other side.
You can say, haven't been doing much exercise.
I need to get out running, get fit and stone clearing.
Oh, just an after all that talking just comes to a patch where I can pick up a few
little Shars of pebble. I think today my friends
We're gonna go
But do you want to just take the shortcut we're gonna we're gonna go right?
Well, that oh fuck is there a way through?
That's how we're gonna go around the edge of the field, but
It's literally, as the path become
this or as it's just literally all I'm going to have to to read the name away through this.
The path not really continuing here. It's a good time chance to just check out the periphery of the
field. I mean basically the can across from the can is on the path now. That's how bad it's got.
I'm walking in this net all.
Nettles on my left and wheat on my right.
I'm going to just step into the imagine that the path
and this is did before.
And maybe this is because I haven't been this way for so long.
The wheat has grown over the pump, but just trying to straddle the section of wheat, I'm not damaging it, you worry about that, I can't look through and see the soil beneath.
the soil beneath. But a little step out here, here's a couple of stones. Slight hassle off there, but I think legitimate. And that's just the undergrowth, it's thick
obviously, the gnaw can get to take the undergrowth out. So you literally pitting in the wind
there, if you throw your stones, literally pitting in the wind there. If you throw your stones, you're literally pissing in the wind.
You don't know where it's going to end up, could end up on you.
But yeah, that could get lost. It's certainly a little bit higher the wheat here.
Some roots of it greener.
But if I try to go around the edge of the field, I'm just like being hit by branches and the trees.
It's just crazy.. This is crazy town. Just spite the stone black
this night. There was a bit of a gray in it and a bit blue, some white. Just kicking something.
See what I thought was the edge is now so much the path and you need to get those stones as far off the field
as you can. This is a signal lesson for the experience, so clear. You are intermediate
guys, I know. So this is something to think about for the future. You need to clear those stones properly off the field.
I don't just think that's nearly off or that's often enough. Make sure it's way off the border may change
over time in thousands of eons.
But also just the path might turn out to go right to the edge and then all your hard work will be undone. Little bit of the Roman villa here and take that out with us the area we've
arrived at bit by bit we're getting that Roman villa off the field.
But not clear apart from that one medium stone I saw not doing anything really
of any size or some more nice nice slurry up stuff maybe we'll save this for the for that
to my size small one a bit more foam of filler yeah I mean this little patch is
they're exciting to me still they're not big stones but they're nice stones
we're approaching the singing ringing tree I've got a lot of ammo to throw into the base of that tree. Let's see
if today is the day it's been a while since you've even come this way. And there we go.
Now all those stones just bounce into the undergrowth and nothing appears.
Just try one more. But clearing a lot more stones today than I was.
But when I last jumped, I think I was just a bit under the weather, wasn't I?
It makes you negative, it makes you think the stones aren't there to be found.
Out!
I just keep checking my phone is still recording as well.
I've lost some valuable info from the last podcast.
Oh, thanks for still listening to this guy.
I hope you're just drifting off to sleep now at this point.
This is a bit longer for the proper insomniac out there.
Well, at least stones, I think these are, this is a case in point, I think these are two stones I've cleared, so that's not far enough. So now they're properly out in the border.
But I'm fighting through nettles undergrows.
Those morphed thistles, so that's a little thistle nettle.
Or maybe just don't know, this is a thistle growing in a
month's the nettles, but it's not, that one's okay.
I'll take a picture of this one.
It's not, it's not magnificent.
But if we don't see a magnificent one later,
this will have to do.
We'll be taking a picture of the Thistles before. It's so hot tonight, isn't it?
So hot tonight.
Just checking my mouth.
Nothing, nothing in, not a batch down there anyway.
Which is all that matters over out here.
Oh and I have to say it's overcast today but it's beautiful up there.
Gods sun rays are coming through the clouds. Grey clouds up above could be rain but blue sky in between them.
It's like a painting. Again here two nice medium-sized stones, but I'm sure these are big three, but I'm sure these have been cleared before but inexperately by some dunts.
So how they go into the proper, did I clear them far enough this time?
I don't know.
I lie in bed tonight wondering, will I have to clear those stones a third time, a fourth time,
but if the boundaries rolls back a hundred miles. What then?
but it just flies out the trees above me. No, oh I was going to say no sign of stone starsy and
then I immediately spotted one crossing the diagonal. Missed me with a bishop move, I think it's a lady.
Could be a lady or someone with a dog's head
oh and that was a clever trap that was well played by the stone sarsie another
one behind me actually not directly but crossing the field between the two
kens and just as I was distracted by that stone sarsie bang walked into a big bramble hurt my knee so you know there are
nothing there are no such thing as accidents out here on the on the
stotion just clear the nice medium stone there from off the actual
stotion as well not just not a second time that's the first time that one's
gone off feels good feels strong feels like we're committed to
you know the task and look at the wolfies just sniffing some stones again that are now on the
pathway I'm just going to keep them a little bit further there's another stone that big one that
they do remember clearing a few years ago now they they're together, more in a clump.
Maybe they were, maybe they got kicked down.
You know, the same size,
you don't just try to kill, same place.
They undo their work.
It could be better than just knock them slightly out of the way,
but that's the kind of guys they are.
Can't excuse my French.
Oh, it's beautiful out here in the countryside, I do recommend it.
Even if you don't feel like clearing stones, I don't know what's wrong with you, but just say
don't, it's better to be walking out here.
Looks nature.
Oh, look again, another lovely clearing and this basically all stone here could spend all day just
Just a pick a town. Oh, it's well down. Oh, I've got that. That's a lovely one. Lovely size.
And then some more one is our
We're not Dory and to the nice round one and
another medium and just coming out of the earth quite nicely it's rained quite recently another little can here
let's do close to the path walls
so that's going to be transferred further away
so a sandwich little bit out of breath am I?
but it's exciting it's a partly sexual excitement
so it's partly that I haven't explained enough to kill this.
And it partly.
So I am working hard out here.
A lot of people say, you know, I work in a mine or a factory,
or you know, smashing rocks in the prison.
You don't know what hard work is.
Well, I do.
It's clearing stones, mate. Clearing't know what hard work is. Well, I do. It's clearing stones mate.
Clearing stones and carrying stones. Another stone stands in member. Again, taking a diagonal,
but I've cleverly stepped away from the nettles and the S. It's a good very well played because
there is another brand-of-bush ride to cross. The buff wolf is a that got caught in it. The wolfies attacked by the dog, got caught
up in the brambles. It's part of the Christmasy figure caught in the field. In his cities there's a dog
there someone, don't it's the guy with the six Labrador's, but he's that kind of fella. There's a lot of that kind of fire around here. Don't have to be racist against gamons.
But they started it.
And again, it is very, very, very sad to see this a virgin become a path.
Just see cans become stones that will just get nudged back onto the field.
It's a slope, so they won't ever go the other way. They're always going to go back from whence they came from whence they thought they had escaped.
It's a Taylor's oldest time.
Taylor's oldest time.
A stone that doesn't rhyme has rolled down, but we do hear them.
And now it's back in the Stocian still, beauty and the beast.
The rich and the wait for that song will come.
The beauty is the stones, the beast is gravity. I don't only they could work together. And yeah, here we are and we're in the corner of the field and there's a nice, just nice thing just lying in the party.
I'm going to kick him off. I think again some of them may have fallen from a can, but most of them not. Some nice data, some poppies.
No impressive fissils here though, I'm sad to say.
I have an affinity, I have an infinity with them, which is an affinity that goes on forever. Infinity.
Inability.
You're just gabbling now, hearing.
A little bit of shriek, scree on the pavement here.
It feels like petro-core is about to happen.
It feels like it might just get a bit of rain.
And the smell may rise in the dusk.
Don't take any of these coming down yet.
But it's quiet.
Maybe too quiet.
No, it's just the right number of quiet.
Oh, whoopie, your rust runs after these stones I'm throwing into the boundary.
But they're just off the pathway
it's a bit hard to get out there haven't got my
trail as I said oh that wasn't oh no wasn't hard enough
poor throw not too far really small stone
just didn't get the wellied behind it that it needed let's try with this one
further away now oh yeah it's more like it. If you doesn't involve chasing that one that's a boundary ball
and another one disappointing small one it's the small ones that are more juicy
they're more out teamer boussi right my jogging button's falling down a little.
Probably, it's probably asleep by now
or if you're awake regretting that I've taken
the long way round.
Right, this is a long one,
what do you think I can do this?
Whoa!
No.
Good throw, it's just too far.
Too far for a human to throw a stone, must be 25 meters.
No one's ever thrown a stone, that kind of distance.
That's going over, I'm not crazy.
Tractor tracks leading off to my right and left, but I'm counting on the puff and I've
been rewarded with a stone that looks like it's been buried for a little while but has
eased its way to the surface. We'll be excited about this one. No wolfiness one's going
on there, can in the middle of the field. Probably the most successful can.
I'm going to get excited water, you won't hope, and I'm going to throw it. Should I pretend to throw it in there? Let's not be late.
Let's throw you one later.
This is an important stone in this journey.
Across the field is another one of the stone as well.
Just check behind me to make sure no one was listening in.
The embassies and other one it's got, look here, there's loads of, I might throw one at least for you.
There's an decent medium there, not throwing that, that's a good, it's like a shoulder bone
small deer, I think we can have this one more, is it ready?
Oh, it's gone into the wheat. It's again still the rules of stone clearing. There are no rules
of stone clearing. That's rule one. Rule two is once you've picked a stone up. It must be put on a
can with the addendum unless you are caught by a stone stary, a danger and been caught by a stone stary.
you are caught by a stone starry, a danger and been caught by a stone starry. Which is you may drop it, but you must return and attempt to retrieve that stone.
It's too cruel to a stone to pick it up and then abandon it. It's just what I've done.
I gave it hope. Now hope is again. We'll never see that stone again.
It's three or four feet away from the path and I have to wait till the
plow has come and who knows where that stone will end up next. Look out for it in
future episodes maybe we'll see it. I'll remember if I see it but I've got a
handful of stones to bring you. Got brown stones and grey stones and brown stones with grey bits in them. I've got a handful of stones to bring you
brown stones and grey stones and grey brown stones. Old stones and new stones, A very old happiness. No more, no less.
I don't remember that song.
I think it came from the children's TV show, A Handful of Songs.
But of course the original lyrics from many of the time were Handful of Songs.
A lot of these things appropriated by cultures that should not have appropriated them.
It's not a children's song.
It's a warning.
Warning, it was all of what is to come.
Right, well these stones, there's one, two, three, four, five, one very nice medium sized stone.
The size of an ibex is scapular. They're going on a one extra one. But not the one I threw
for Woffee. Do I feel guilt to little? Will I overcome it? Never quite. Will that stone
haunt me in my dreams tonight? Probably well. Right, we're heading down towards the stone
pole. Been a while since the stone pole, obviously no guarantee.
There's no stone starzy visible at the moment but this is the place they know they most likely to catch me, I'm at my most exposed and concentrating on trying to get those many stones to hit the
poles possible. They know it's a dangerous time for me. At the moment I haven't even got any stones.
Oh no it's exactly
as I spoke, a stone starsy beautifully camouflage in this black coat against the green trees.
Cross is by just too late, having too early, probably, or for either,
for any of who's trying to catch. But say, it'll be gone by the time we get down there but we'll find this Timstones. It's far from clear we're halfway there and no stones picked up.
I mean people say, I don't know if it's Excessions, an exciting show, a TV show, is it mission impossible?
That's an exciting film with a guy flying off a ramp on a motorbike.
But is it truly as exciting as whether I will pick up five stones by the time we get to the end of
this path? We have three courses the way. There's a pretty poor piss-poor stone here. I'm going to
pick that one up. It's very thin. It's going to be very high. It's like it could be a good stone
for skimming. It's not a good stone for throwing it a pole. If that hits the pole, I to be very high it's like it could be a good stone for skimming it's not a good
stone for throwing it a pole if that hits the pole I'll be very surprised it's the kind of
stone if you throw it it'll be like one of those helicopters that comes off a tree you know just
sort of flitter around let's have a look there might be some stones here I mean there's stones with the deeply embedded in the ground, looking
around, never stop looking around. Again skimmers, that one's okay, three. Alright, I've got five,
but they're useless, they're tiny, this is going to take a lot of skill on my behalf.
At least we've got five and still of course the way to go.
So if you were worried, you know, I should to make it real exciting, I should have picked
up the last one a bit later, but look at the size of that trucker wolf. Look at that!
And it's just like on top of the ground. Right, I'm going to use that one, that one's again
Nebone or rhinoceros, that's how big that is.
I'm going to pick up these awful shitty stones, I think we might get rid of the skimmer.
Now I'm going to use the skimmer, you've got to believe.
You have to believe, right, it's been a while though since I've met another beautiful
big stone here. Just in the path, is it going to lift out as easily? Not quite as easy,
but it's going to come.
Oh, is it?
It's too good to miss this one. I wish I had my trowel with me. This moving it's how it's the biggest
stone of the day. It's a beauty. Fingers have got a little dirty there. I've got seven stones
and I'm going to start with the one I've got first.
And I'm going to prove to you, if you believe,
you can make even, who will be very excited about this.
She knows what's coming.
She's been there before.
You have to believe and if you believe,
you can make anything happen to even,
and I'd like you to own, hit a pole from a distance.
So I'd say seven feet and
I've done it I hit it.
Well the other way because this is a big one.
Anyway, oh the big one misses.
Oh the delicious ironie.
Watch out what the other big one misses.
So one out of three, one out of four.
One out of five the only one that's hit was the one I said was impossible.
One out of six my throws way off. One out of seven, that was the wrong pole.
Oh, it was a disaster.
Hey, I've done too many zones.
I've just got tics out about the first one hitting.
It's going to be it's bad luck.
Very bad news.
Unless you buy a ticket for the tour of Rahul Astapa,
go to richained.com slash Rahul Astapa.
Please buy a fucking ticket.
I mean, if you listened to 144 of these things plus the summertime special, you fucking
owe me.
So even if you're not going to go to see it, can you buy a ticket to the Tourpiece Hall,
Tumberidge Wells if you're not going to go because those ones are sold, they're going
to sell fuck all in their massive venue. So we'll see if we can get some exciting names to come to those gigs to save us.
But it's really supposed to interest you as it should be an interesting one.
You know the moment of silence, I'm just looking around for stones. I found one again in the park, it's a nice one, it's a big hole. A lot of stones just coming out of the ground
because it rained yesterday in the ground to give up her bounty for those who shall wait.
Goodness, I hope this is recorded to this point we'd hate to.
Is it still going?
Hello, hello, hello. Oh shit. Is it recording? Seems to be but it's stopped at some point
30 minutes. Did we miss the stone pole wolf? I mean it was such an exciting stone pole and
plus then there was an advert for my tour. Hopefully it just stopped when I picked it out of my pocket.
Alright, here we go. There's a dump.
It's turning around.
Wolfy.
Wolfy, wait.
Wolfy.
Wolfy.
Hey there.
Wolfie, stay.
Stay with me.
Stay with me.
So, thank you.
Come on, Randy.
Come on, you're going to break your legs.
Come on.
Wolfie. Come on. Well, Faye.
Nice little, uh,
who do you look like?
Sort of the Abden sugary
with a baseball cap on.
Yeah.
Faye, we've lost some stuff. I'm not even sure we're recording anymore, but hopefully
we are. If we're not, I mean, you're not going to hear this, so just mad as I said, and
they're like, I think you're all idiots for listening to this, but if you are still
able to hear it, that's obviously just a dark... heading down towards the Brexit ditch and it's a leaf, I thought it was a stone
sometimes these contribute that's really a beginners mistake but even an
expert like me can sometimes make that mistake so like a stone, but it was organic. So it's no need to panic. Just be annoyed that
an organic thing tricked you into believing it had the majesty of thint.
and coming down to the ditch to stop Brexit. Seen through.
Why is it four Prime Ministers?
Five Prime Ministers.
Since we started this,
the ditch is still there.
What does that tell you about politics?
The stones will be here in a thousand years time when Liz Truss's name would have been all but
forgotten. Unlike now, when everyone's talking about a, right, I'm out, the ditch is stuck
Brexit and I haven't got a stone. This is a terrible news, I'm just managed to find some again the tiniest
track almost insulting to the Brexit ditch after all it's done for us.
But it's all I could do for you today.
Pretty hungry now. I think that's part of the problem for me here. Did it sound really? Back to where we began. That's the thing about being
a stone-tower, a bit of poo on the floor there, it's not nice, is it? I think Wolfie's
done a poo today. Oh! I picked out another good stone from the, can I get a few peep walls?
Shall I let you off the lead?
Woevey, can I?
I'm trying for a poop.
Can I try for a poop?
That one hit the alpha non-gocane at least I heard it. No poops. Well I haven't got a good picture of a piss off I'm very sorry, but it's organic.
It may grow in many colors,
it may evoke a nation, a wonderful nation.
But we'll not be here for all the way.
And if it is, it'll just be on a stone
which I was drawing it on.
Or on that big sword that can charge us now.
Right, we're heading now to do our passage time to have a quick break. Browse through your emails.
The dog.
Holly Bark has been in touch and that's if you're wondering it's the bark of the dog, but she said she identifies with most of the bark of the treats.
Holly Bark says Richard, well I hear your wife is going away for a week or so. During on August, can I pop over to your field and help you pick up a few things?
