Hello and welcome to Table Manners for a very special bonus episode. Today's episode is
pretty special because mum and I have been given free range of Samsung KX and their connected
living range. Hi mum, how are you doing? I'm fine, it's strange to be out isn't it? But
this is like paradise to me. This is a proper kitchen. So today we're doing a bit of a special episode.
We're actually at Samsung KX in King's Cross.
Of course, KX.
I've just, that's just, the penny has dropped.
King's Cross.
Yeah, I got it.
Yeah, I'm there.
I'm there.
And we're having fun with their connected living range.
So basically we're going to be cooking from the kitchen
and we're going to be enjoying the family hub fridge
and the dual cook flex oven
so we can cook two different things simultaneously on different heats
and a savoury could be in the top and a sweet could be in the bottom
and they wouldn't change the flavours.
It's amazing, but my favourite.
What?
Family hub fridge.
I mean, it kind of, it's like a robot.
It blows your mind, doesn't it? On the front you've
got everything that's in the fridge plus the expiry dates and if you're a bit short of knowing
what to do that night to cook it makes up its own recipes. A little bit about Samsung's smart
devices they're all connected to their smart things app which means I can use my phone to
check what's in the fridge when I'm out.
So if you're at the supermarket, you can go onto the SmartThings app
and check what you've got in your fridge because it has a camera inside.
Fantastic.
So instead of, you know, when you always get that extra mint jelly or you get that...
Or butter.
Exactly.
So when you're out, you can see exactly what you need to pick up
or even preheat the oven on the way home.
You know how you're always like, darling, are you going to be in? Can you put the oven on? Well, you know how you're always like darling are you going to be here put the oven on well you can do it from your
phone it's so amazing i know it's excellent everything works together through the app
making life a little bit easier and you can even play music from the fridge so you don't even need
a radio in there oh we're going to put some of your songs on no we're not mum please don't be
pushy um so to make use of the dual cook flex oven,
we're going to be cooking two different things.
I've already put my tomatoes on to slow roast them.
So they're on about 150.
And then you're going to use the bottom.
To reheat the quiche.
The bottom one to reheat the quiche.
And then I'll do it with some pine nuts, toasted pine nuts,
some runner beans and rocket.
And when did we do the onion quiche last? Did we do
it for Carly Rae Jepsen? Yes. And it was a surefire hit. She loved it. But you've made
it a lot since then. I mean, it's one of those go-tos. Manager Sarah, who we love, loves
this recipe so, so much. It is really, really great. And it's in our cookbook. I'm really
excited about the guest today. I know you are. Because I had a huge crush on him.
I know, darling.
When he entered Casa Ramon.
What is Casa Ramon, darling?
I mean, listen, you've said a lot that you haven't been a fan of this programme.
However, it's changed my life and every summer since it came on.
And I feel like this person is going to win you over to maybe watch the next season.
His name's Ovi Soko.
Everyone knows Ovi.
The nicest guy on showbiz, I think.
Why?
Just wait.
He'll charm your socks off, Mum.
He's handsome.
He's wonderful.
He's everything that we could possibly desire
to set up with cousin Isabella.
I haven't been seeing anybody for many months,
so it'd be very nice to see someone who is cool and handsome.
We're just thinking Samsung KX is Casa Amor.
Right, so should we get prepping on some of the food?
All right, cool.
Ovi, thanks for doing this.
How are you?
I'm good.
I'm good.
Healthy, happy.
Happy to be here.
Well, can we talk about the healthy thing?
Because you've like, I saw the before and after what's happened during lockdown you're the person that's
the only person that's like got fitter you and Ronaldo oh no no no no don't put me in the same
boat as that's way too much pressure no but um went on a bit of a journey uh started off
basically just eating and watching TV.
Oh, OK. So you did do the Christmas thing.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah, definitely.
Oh, I've carried on.
I'm not mad at you.
I still think it's Christmas and I have a glass of wine at 4.30.
You still have your Baileys, Mum?
No, darling.
You're living life to the fullest.
I am.
So come on then.
So what happened?
So you were doing like everybody else in lockdown.
You were eating and drinking maybe a little bit more than you drink.
I don't drink heavily, but, you know, I enjoy a wine every now and again.
But yeah, I was just doing a lot of eating and sort of trying to get used to the new situation like everyone.
I think it definitely hit us all by surprise.
And everything happened so quickly. It was, you know, it was a bit of a whirlwind everyone I think it definitely hit us all by surprise yeah and
everything happened so quickly it was you know it was a bit of a whirlwind I think
yep one place one day next day oh no you're in your house yeah in your house yeah in your house
and you can't really go anywhere so yeah just trying to wrap my wrap my head around that for
a little bit eventually saw that you know body was getting a bit soft
for an athlete not great for my profession so how do you know when your body's getting soft
oh well i saw myself didn't i oh i see i never look in the mirror not in my body anyway darling
do we need to put the oven on for the quiche oh yeah why don't you do it from the phone okay
darling ovi you can put the oven on from your phone with. Oh yeah, why don't you do it from the phone, Mum? Okay, darling. Ovi, you can put the oven on from your phone with the SmartThings app. That's a touch. It is. That's
a touch. I know. Especially like training and whatnot, it helps me when I get back, I'm back to
in the shower, can pop the oven on, pops the kettle ready. What have you been cooking? We still haven't
spoken about how you've done this kind of transformation thing.
So what did you start eating?
Well, a lot of vegetables, a lot of veggies.
Low carb?
Yeah, I tried to cut back on the carbs and then like proteins.
And then I had to start putting in work.
A lot of water.
Water is a big, big, big, big...
So are you able to play basketball now with your team no no um there's still obviously restrictions
on that they're still trying to figure out how to allow people to work especially because it's
a team sport it's a bit tricky yeah right it's a bit tricky but they're not putting you within a
bubble then no no no no but that's what they're doing with the the whole nba uh the nba they're
sort of figuring out a way to finish the season pretty similar to what they're doing with the whole NBA. The NBA, they're sort of figuring out a way to finish the season. Pretty similar to what they're doing with the Premiership and a lot of the
bigger leagues around the world. They're just like, they've closed off to the public and
they've got all those guys in a bubble.
And where did you grow up?
So I was born in Tottenham.
Do you support Spurs?
Arsenal.
Oh my God! How could you do that?
Born on White Hart Lane too.
That's the only problem
that I've got with that.
White Hart Lane born?
Literally White Hart Lane.
You really want to say this
on the podcast this year.
You!
But hold on,
so why did you start
supporting Arsenal?
Family thing.
Oh okay, fair enough.
Yeah, my brother
supports Arsenal,
dad supports Arsenal
so I just sort of
followed suit.
So growing up in your family, who was cooking? What were you, what was a memorable meal from
your childhood?
Well, mum mostly cooked. Dad, he would cook on special occasions. And yeah, I'll probably
say the most memorable meal, my dad cooked a mean spaghetti.
What?
Spaghetti?
Spaghetti bolognese?
It wasn't bolognese.
What was it?
It was a dad special.
So, Raymond, shout out to my dad.
Raymond, what was the Raymond special sauce?
What was it?
Well, it had a lot of tomato in there,
a lot of different spices, some peppers.
And you loved it so what what about
jello fries jello fries that's a staple you know would you have that do are you eating that at the
moment yeah that's the best thing that's a must that jello fries and soup were you were you so
your dad was really good with the raymond special sauce. And what was your mum good at? Well, funny enough, yeah, my mum had a mean jollof rice.
And a stew.
What was the stew?
Well, like she would have a goat meat in there.
And then it would just be like a, it's like a red sauce, seasoned, spicy.
You can eat it with plantain.
You can eat it with white rice.
You can eat it with your jollof if you want and
would you be having that a lot in the week yeah yeah see like my mum and uh my mum and dad were
pretty busy a lot so my mum would make sure she had a lot of stew in the house so that we could
eat it with whatever so what actually is in the ingredient that makes the jollof rice go yellow
is it the pepper would it be saffron or turmeric no they don't know they use
um you use palm oil and you have to cook the palm oil and then once you've um put all your
seasonings into your tomato sauce then you would fry the the sauce in the oil in the palm oil yeah
and then you put the rice in and you cook So when you're at home and you're entertaining, what do you like to cook?
I love to cook chicken.
I love to cook a roast chicken.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, yeah.
That's like, that would be the staple of the meal for me.
The sides, I can mix it up.
You can have a sweet corn, rices, pastas, whatever you want.
But the chicken, that's my deal.
So how do you do your chicken?
What do you do? Do you go put butter under the skin? Do you do, how do you do your chicken like do you what do you do
do you go
put butter
under the skin
do you do
what do you do
herbs
how do you make
your whole chicken
so good
well I'll mix up
a blend of spices
I'll use a base
of a little bit
of olive oil
I'll melt some butter
so I can mix that in
butter and olive oil
together
yeah I do that too
why do you do that
because it's
creamy and delicious
yeah
the butter gives it
a different flavour
and I think the honour helps it sink into the meat.
And then, yeah, so I make my seasoning
however I want to mix it,
depending on how I'm feeling,
depending on how spicy it's going to be,
depending on the company.
And then I let it sit overnight in the refrigerator.
Oh, you've seasoned it up the night before?
Oh, you marinate?
Yeah, marinade. There you up. Oh, you marinate. Yeah, marinate.
There you go.
You'd love this fridge
because you can actually look
at what's inside.
You can see if it looks okay.
You can look at your marinated whole chicken.
You can admire it overnight.
Yeah, exactly.
And then do you do any puds?
Are you a pudding kind of person?
No, I don't cook puddings.
I don't cook puddings. I don't cook puddings.
I don't cook desserts and stuff, but I love them.
Which one do you like?
I'm a cake guy.
You're not going to say sticky toffee pudding.
I do like sticky toffee pudding.
Every bloke we know loves sticky toffee pudding.
I do like sticky toffee pudding.
Yes, it is good.
It's excellent.
I like apple crumble.
I like apple pie.
Me too.
Again, the dessert thing is amazing.
Well, you could cook your chicken and your crumble in that oven at the same time.
Well, la-di-da.
That's what you can do.
Yeah.
Did you know that?
And the aromas.
No, you can do it.
So you could have your whole chicken at the top,
or you could have your spicy chicken at the top,
and then you could add your crumble at the same time.
And it's put on two different temperatures.
Yeah, no, that's impressive.
It's wild.
That's good, right?
That's extremely impressive.
So we have done something, which I don't know how strict you're still being, because obviously, I don't know.
You can have a little taste.
Can you have some onion quiche?
Yes, do you want me?
Okay, fine.
So do you have a cheat day?
Yeah, yeah.
And I go in on my cheat day. So come on, what's a cheat day yeah yeah and i go in on my come on what's a cheat day on my cheat day
breakfast is pancakes i get um the syrup the full nine butter if i feel like some butterscotch on
there hot but like i go in go in yeah that's just breakfast yeah yeah that's breakfast a bunch of
eggs you know bacon like Like, the full deal.
Is this from living...
You were living in America.
Yeah.
You went to college there.
Was it Alabama?
Yeah.
Which university?
University of Alabama in Birmingham.
And then I transferred up to school in Pittsburgh
to finish up my college career.
Did you get a scholarship?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I enjoyed it.
And the English accent out there is, yeah, I don't get it,
but, hey, I'm not complaining.
I'm not angry.
That was because of your basketball.
It was, it was, it was.
Not just because you're handsome.
Jesus, mum, you've been completely off-putting.
I think that's an opinion.
So, I mean, you must have been having that kind of,
I mean, that's such an American breakfast. Very American breakfast. You know, with the, I mean, must have been having that kind of I mean that's such a American breakfast you know
with the I mean it's delicious I definitely picked up some breakfast habits from America
so that's just breakfast so what's lunch then lunch something fried whatever that might it
has to be fried deep fried you know really yeah do you like Kentucky fried chicken that's exactly where I was going
I love it so much and I never eat it it would be my last meal I think oh well I wouldn't be I
wouldn't be mad at you do you make your own chicken like that oh yeah like I know how to but
I'd order out from different places especially on a cheat day like I really want to kick back
enjoying myself feel like you know feel like a
king and then dinner i mean if you've got space dinner um i'd run it back i'd run it back it'll
be a it'll be another fried meal it'll be a different it'll be a different no wonder he has
to look after himself the rest of the time that's a whole week's calories in one day no but i'm a big fella i need a lot
of calories yeah where do you like to eat out where do i like to eat out oh do you know what
i love vapianos where's that i haven't been to no it's just like a chain yeah it's like a chain
restaurant uh yeah yeah it's like pasta and pizzas, all that kind of stuff. I've never heard of it. Is there one near us?
There's definitely one like near Oxford Street I've seen.
And it's called Vapianas.
I really like it.
Can I ask about kind of the aftermath of Love Island?
Do you feel like you would ever recommend somebody to go on it?
Because, I mean, you've had a really positive experience from it but then i don't know if you saw reggie yates's program that he put out
on bbc3 recently i haven't seen it but i know i know which one yeah and but like i just wondered
you know you have had quite a positive experience but do you think you did something different to
other people or do you think it was something to do with your age and maybe having a bit more wisdom
and having also a career that you all of this stuff do you think that was something to do with your age and maybe having a bit more wisdom and having also a career that you, all of this stuff, do you think that played a part with feeling like you were safe from the grapples of, you know, reality television?
I think it's a very, very tricky subject because obviously there is a bunch of perks that come with writing and stuff.
But I would definitely also say I was in a very unique
situation going into that you know I was already privileged outside of that in you know my career
and what I've been able to you know do in on that side of things and ultimately the travel that I've
had since I was 16 and being by myself and sort of growing and learning from so many different cultures.
Yeah, right.
It made me have a much different perspective
than a lot of the past me.
How old are you now, Ovi?
I'm 29.
Gosh.
So you've lived a life already.
Yeah, but I do think it was really interesting.
And I don't want to just talk about Love Island
because we've got so much of our stuff to talk about.
But as somebody who was really into watching it and also into watching how you respected women you were
celebrated how there was such respect when there were people like michael on that show and whether
that was hammed up with the edit and whatnot but i mean he was an example of a gaslighting kind of
mate some sorry samsung's trying to tell me something somewhere what do you want to tell me fridge um anyway so I mean that you know the way that he gaslighted
Amber it was horrendous to watch we were all screaming at the tv and then there was you were
kind of the savior that kind of you you respected the women you looked out for the women you and
Amber had such a special bond and it was it was a real relief to see. And I mean, I've talked about this on many of our podcasts,
but I'm on this group WhatsApp, Love Island,
which kind of spans from having Jonathan Ross on it to who else?
Aisling Bea.
Aisling Bea to Montana, to Richard Curtis, Lena Dunham, Scarlett Curtis.
I mean, Catherine Ryan.
We were all on there talking about you and loving you
and celebrating you and being like, look at this man.
Anyway, I just kind of, so I think you were,
it was really refreshing to watch you.
What made you go on it in the first place?
Or were you invited?
No, I wasn't invited i applied i
went online and i applied why big brother oh you loved big brother no my big brother oh oh your
big brother said literally um just said you should be on he was like yo because he him and his missus
they they're big fans of the show um and one summer when i was back on holiday, my brother was like, man,
you would be so sick if you went on this show.
And I was like, eh, I never watched it to be fair.
I sort of brushed it to the side.
And it was when I was away in Spain playing,
after training, I was bored and I was trying to think of,
you know, all right, well, the idea popped up in my head.
I went on Google. How do I apply for Love Island?
The thing, the first link came up, kicked it, filled in the information.
I didn't finish it because you had to do like a video thing.
I was like, oh, not for me.
And then long story short, they got in contact with me and kept on sending me email prompts.
So finally, I finished the application and
someone called me that's the rest but you don't really regret it because it's raised your profile
enormously and it's given you other opportunities yeah I don't regret it I don't regret it you know
I think it was um a really really neat life experience and and that's all what for me
personally that's what it was what did your mum think my mum, before I went in, she was like,
oh, she's going to be so mad at me.
She was like, oh, you want to go on Vanity Island?
Vanity Island?
I was like, oh, mum, that's not what the deal is.
So she wasn't thrilled.
So she knew about the programme and she saw it?
She didn't, but I told her and then she obviously,
my mum did mother's research and looked into it.
Mother's research.
Yeah.
Did she say, don't embarrass me?
But you didn't embarrass yourself at all.
You had a few kisses and that was it.
No, that's something that, I don't know,
that's just something I wouldn't do anyway.
I just got a lot of respect for my mum, for my family,
and a lot of other women in my family.
And, you know, the gentlemen.
Do you come from a religious family?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm from a Christian background.
Very churchy, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
So, you know, grew up in a church,
but ultimately, like, just to respect yourself, really.
Do you know what I'm saying?
And you can still enjoy yourself, you can still enjoy the experience in anything while respecting yourself
so does your mom does your mom work now she's retired mom and dad what did they what did they
do they were in social well my mom was in social work and my dad was a house yeah my dad was in social work and my dad was in housing. Yeah, my dad was in housing.
Oh, OK.
Both public sector.
Yes.
What's that?
The dual cook flex oven is singing to us.
I mean, do you think that's done, Mum?
It's warm.
We don't want it hot, do we?
No, I'll just do this.
Assemble the salad.
One sec.
Salad assembled.
She's doing something fancy schmancy.
It's not fancy schmancy at all.
It's just like these slow cooked.
It's these slow cooked tomatoes that look actually.
And they're just, they hopefully go quite sweet.
And they're with like capers and curds.
Don't talk it down.
Don't talk it down.
It's fancy.
You're like a motivational speaker.
You should be a life coach as well, Ovi.
Let it be fancy.
Why can't it be fancy? Let it be fancy. Okay well, Ovi. Let it be fancy. Why can't it be fancy?
Let it be fancy.
Okay, I'm going to let it be fancy.
You're still playing basketball.
Yeah, yeah.
So how long is a basketball player's career?
Well, generally, you know,
bar an injury, obviously,
you could probably play until you're about 35.
That's a decent, between 33 and 33 35 so it's pretty similar to
footballers yeah so do you have a plan yeah what's your plan well you know right now I've
invested a lot of my money in houses but then I have different ideas that I want to you know
get into moving forward um and you know the whole motivational thing, I think,
is something that's sort of come from the whole Love Island thing
that I think could benefit a lot of other people.
Do you see yourself as a coach, maybe?
Or inspiring young people to play basketball?
I wouldn't even say necessarily inspiring young folks to play basketball? I wouldn't even say necessarily inspiring young folks
to play basketball specifically,
but more so to do whatever it is that they're passionate about.
So just explain, you were born in Tottenham.
How did you start?
Obviously, you're tall, so you're absolutely perfect for basketball.
I wasn't always tall.
You weren't always.
Did you do the Michael Jordan shooting up?
Oh, I did.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Year nine.
After year nine, going into year 10, yeah.
And so when did you start playing basketball at school?
Well, I got my first basketball when I was like,
I think I was about seven or eight from a dad's friend.
And at that point, I was all football.
You know, I wanted to know parts of basketball.
The first time I tried to take a basketball to school,
I was dribbling it up Great Cambridge, bounced it off my foot,
and it rolled into the road.
And the big 144 double-decker bus just came and popped it.
Squashed his bloodyimmin' basketball.
And as the traffic stopped, it just rolled to the side
and it was just split open.
All deflated.
Yeah, it was done.
And that was my basketball career done until I was like 12.
So then you started playing.
Did you play at school?
I didn't play at school because my secondary school,
they didn't really have a basketball program going on but i
played for a local club in barnett okay um and it was through them that you know i had the opportunity
to go to you know various camps i went to one in spain and then eventually i went to one so they
spotted the talent well don't say they spotted it i followed my brother there i was your brother's
also a basketball player he's an an architect. He gave it up.
Oh, he gave it up.
But he did play for a while.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, yeah, it was definitely through him.
He's the one who started the whole thing.
I just sort of latched onto his coattails.
And then I ended up taking me around the world.
So that is, hold on.
No, that is fancy.
That is fancy. I'm Don't... It is fancy.
That is fancy.
I'm just going to turn the oven off with the smart things out.
Jess, can you get it out for me?
Mum, it looks great.
Does it?
Yeah.
I'll put that there.
Oh, wow.
There we go.
I'll get some knives and forks.
Mum, I'm going to let you do the cutting bit.
Oh, I guess you could use this cake knife.
Yeah, I think that probably works.
Maybe.
Give them a big bit then, Mum.
Darling, I've got to try and get it out.
It's the actual centre of the dish now.
LAUGHTER So, Ovi, what would be your desert island meal?
Desert island meal.
Starter, main, pudding and drink of choice.
Starter, main, pudding, drink of choice.
OK.
Starter would be...
I really like garlic bread with the fondue thing,
with the cheesy...
Oh, yeah.
When you dip.
When you dip.
Oh, you like fondue?
Yes.
Oh, yeah.
I would really...
Do you love cheese?
A little kind of Swiss situation.
I don't know.
It's weird because I wouldn't say I love cheese,
but certain cheeses... I don't even like I love cheese, but certain cheeses.
I hope you like this.
No, no, certain cheeses.
And when it's put together in the right way,
like I don't like super, super extra strong like cheese.
Do you know what I mean?
I don't like it when it's overpowering.
I like it when all of this.
Not the big smelly one.
Not the big smelly one.
See, I like a big smelly one.
Would you like any of this?
Yes.
Should I just put it on your plate then?
I'm sorry, my mum says that I am not the best server.
No, you're doing well, darling.
Thank you.
You're game for Ovi.
Okay, that's the starter.
That's quite a heavy starter.
Yeah, it is a heavy starter.
Hey, I think we all agreed I'm a big fella.
That's true.
And it's good.
That's true.
Then, main? Hey, I think we all agreed I'm a big fella. That's true. And it's good. That's true. Then Maine?
For Maine, I would go with, yeah, it's got to be a chicken.
But how it's done, that could vary.
That could vary.
Yeah.
Depends on the day of the week, if it's a cheat day or not.
Well, I mean, you're Desert Island Mills meal so it's kind of like no but so if
it's the dream if it's the dream then definitely be barbecued oh yeah yeah oh i like oh no i'm
really good at barbecuing are you that that yeah i'm not gonna hold back not gonna hold back on
that gas or charcoal not charcoal like the wood the wood, yeah, yeah, yeah. You have charcoal? Proper stuff, yeah. The real deal, the real deal.
Okay.
No, I love barbecue.
So have you been doing
loads of barbecues recently?
No.
Why not?
Because I like to cook
for other people.
I like to cook for big groups.
It's quite a faff if you're...
Do you know what I mean?
If you're just...
I don't mind barbecue for myself,
but I wouldn't do it.
Why don't you get
a gas barbecue then?
Because then you could
just do it for yourself
and you wouldn't feel like, you know, sad that you're only cooking it for yourself.
Oh, it's the flavour.
Okay, yeah, no, I know, my husband's the same.
Yeah, the flavour.
Yeah, so definitely barbecued chicken and then the sides,
maybe a mac and cheese.
Anything you put in your mac and cheese in particular
or anywhere you've had the best mac and cheese? Oh, well, I recently had, it was, I ordered from a food caterer,
and I think she put, it was either bacon bits or, yeah.
But it was amazing.
I love Burner's Tavern.
It was absolutely amazing.
Their mac and cheese.
They put truffle in theirs. Ooh. And ox cheek. Ox cheek.er's Tavern. Absolutely amazing. They put truffle in theirs.
And ox cheek.
It's the best.
Like slow cooked ox cheek.
It's really good.
My friends that have
Rita's Bodega, they've actually got a place in
King's Cross. They put green chilli in theirs
and it's really nice. Just a little kick.
This is good money. Do you like it?
It is a good quiche, isn't it? So, okay, so it's a nice. Just a little kick. This is good money. Do you like it? Oh, yeah. Good. It is a good quiche, isn't it?
It is.
So, okay.
So it's a barbecue with mac and cheese.
Any drink that you're going for?
Hmm.
Because I drink so much water.
Like, I honestly, like 95% of the time I drink water.
Do you never drink alcohol?
No, no, no, no.
I drink alcohol.
But that's the thing.
Like, it's either i drink alcohol or water
there's no no in between so what's your what do you like to drink i like white wine like i like
sweet white wines you know i mean do you which ones oh i i don't know specifics i'm not you don't
discriminate no i don't with the sweet white one i'm like oh yeah if it's sweet uh that's cool and
then pudding pudding i really like. I really like apple pie.
I really like apple pie.
Apple crumble.
Like, you know what I mean?
But where do you get a good apple pie?
Because I know in America they have apple pie in like every diner, right?
With whipped cream.
But can you find it good here?
I feel like you get the American style apple pies at Costco, I think.
Costco?
So you're getting like these massive ones?
Yeah, big, big, big ones.
We've been asking everyone
on this series
if they were school dinners
or a packed lunch
kind of person.
School dinners.
What was your favourite
school dinner?
I don't know
the actual dinner part
but desserts.
I loved the cake and custard.
The cake and custard. Everybody says cake and custard. The cake and custard. Why do you always say cake and custard?
The cake and custard, I loved it.
The dinners, eh.
You don't get that anymore now.
It's all because of...
Jamie Oliver.
Yeah, it's all health.
God damn.
Fruit and yoghurt, yeah.
I know it's all for the better.
But I think if you have a bit of cake and custard
and you run it off in the playground, it's fine.
That's the thing.
I feel so bad for the kids today. Yeah, me too.
Honestly, I feel so bad
for the kids. It's so much healthier. Yeah, it's like
it's just too healthy. When I look
at the tuck shop in secondary
schools, I'm sure it just doesn't look
appealing now. When I was in school
it was actually Snickers and
Twix and Penguin.
We had Dua Lipa on and she said that
basically she'd have a Nutella sandwich
and then she'd have
a penguin bar
and she basically
just had chocolate all day
and she's alright
isn't she
fine
I wanted to know
do you think you've got
good table manners
I don't know
you guys tell me
I think you're fantastic
fabulous
I mean you could do
a maculate
I think I have good table manners
well you ate everything
thank you
no both of you
are very good cooks
thank you
published authors but name it.
There you go.
Oh, yeah.
It's all in our cookbook.
We'll give you a cookbook.
What's your karaoke song, Ovi?
Karaoke song.
Ooh.
Oh, is that the beginning?
No, no, no, no.
I just like the question.
Okay.
Karaoke song.
It says a lot.
I just want to warn you, it says a lot about you mine is this sex is on fire
that's not actually a song what is it it's sex on fire but please stop saying this it's very
aggressive how you say it as well it's quite predatory i really don't like it please stop
saying it as well please just change your karaoke song i'm going to change it to david lammy's your
your what was what was david lammy's. What was David Lammy's?
Somewhere from West Side Story.
So come on, tell me what yours is.
Now, when you say karaoke song,
is it a song that I just really, really love
that I might butcher?
Yeah, you can do whatever you like.
Your song that you think.
I like Midas Touch.
Who sings that?
Midas Touch.
Who is that, darling?
I forget the name, but I literally listen to that almost every other day.
Oh, do you?
That's because you've got the Midas touch.
No, I just like the song.
It's a dope song.
Do you sing it?
I sing along to the chorus, the Midas touch part,
and then everything else.
I just sort of like...
And then Midas...
It's a great song.
Actually, I will play great song. Actually,
I will play it. Maybe.
Yeah.
Maybe you should start singing that darling.
Add it to your set list.
What's on the horizon for you after lockdown kind of eases a bit.
Book.
Got a book coming.
Can we talk about it then?
What's it about?
Well,
it's a self-help book.
It's a self-help book for,
for,
you know,
younger folks and young adults
to get people to realise that they're enough and they're worth.
I think in today's society, we're always sold images of things.
Yeah, through reality TV.
No, no, no.
And I agree.
And I've said, you know, on a couple of occasions,
things that I don't necessarily agree with about the whole reality TV.
Because it makes you think you've got to be as good as that person.
It's not even as good because I wouldn't even say that.
I wouldn't even use that way to say it because like everyone's good in their own way.
You will never be better than me at being me and I'll never be better than you at being you.
But it's getting everyone to understand the power and the individuality.
Do you know what I'm saying?
There's strength in that.
And basically, long story short, when I came out of Love Island,
I saw all of the love that I received,
and it was overwhelming, to be quite honest.
And it really blew me away.
And I wanted to try and figure out a way that I could
give back to people something of value that is really for them it's not it's not necessarily
about me do you know what I'm saying and I think a lot of people kind of resonated with me for
maybe my quirks but those are the things that are unique to me.
And I'll just be in myself.
But I want people to see those things in themselves and see the value that they have in themselves.
How long did it take to write?
It's one of the first things that I got in place
since I came out of Love Island.
So I've been working on it.
So it's been a while you've been working on it.
Yeah, yeah.
So the message is be yourself.
Be the best self you can be of yourself.
Oh, yeah.
Don't try and impersonate or be someone else.
No, because you'll never be happy.
You always feel an emptiness.
You see people that they do very, very well in life
in what seems to be the right thing to do,
and they amass huge amounts of wealth.
They amass all of these things that you know if you ask the
average person on the street oh yeah how do you think that person is doing in life everyone would
be like oh yeah they're doing great but if they haven't been true to themselves they'll still feel
a hole inside and that's why we see unfortunately um tragedies amongst superstars that you know end
up falling into this that and the other because
they still feel a hole inside if they're not totally and completely i think you should train
as a counselor yeah i don't know if i don't know about that um well i i'm just trying to give back
what i can give in it i don't know who did you speak to when you were when you were kind of doing
research for the book and working on it were Were there any key people that really helped you with the book?
A lot of this stuff is stuff I've been through and I've lived through it.
Do you know what I'm saying?
And my experience having had to travel from when I was 16
and kind of figure a lot of stuff out for myself
and come to a lot of realisations for myself and come to a lot of realizations in you know by myself
in a certain sense um helped me come to a lot of these conclusions because these are things that
i know are real in my own opinion so the book is really like a mix between small stories about
myself but really they're things that i know would resonate with a lot of people
and hopefully help them see themselves in the stories and see where I've gone wrong and where
I've learned certain lessons and maybe they can take one thing from the book great if you can take
one thing that can help change your life around a little bit great man you know if that's if that's
achieved I'll be happy.
Ovi, it's so lovely to chat to you.
So nice to meet you.
And so wonderful that you just kind of live up to it and everything and more that I've kind of, well, expected of you.
Well, I didn't know what to expect, you being a reality TV star.
Oh, mum, you're so...
No, but he's a completely...
It's
completely different.
Why? Because you don't expect
you expect someone who goes on to
a reality TV programme like
Love Island to be wanting
going for celebrity
with not very much behind
them. But in fact, he's
so substantial. But mum, you should
watch the program because
there's many people that just went i think like you said for the experience right not just for
the fame and i think that i think it's you know and and you know i agree with both of you and i
agree with you to a certain extent where it's like okay um there will be some people that use it and
and abuse the kind of privilege to experience something like that
um but then you know like myself but you have no regrets about being on there no no no no no
but you know but then you respected yourself and you didn't do anything that you weren't
comfortable with yeah yeah and i yeah i definitely butted heads with the producers a couple of times yeah see yeah you got a standard
yeah and that comes with experience that comes with maturity though that comes with having lived
a little bit yeah i'm feeling confident did you feel like did you feel like you needed to protect
some of the other more naive people on the show the idea that yes you butted heads with producers
maybe there were some more malleable people that were maybe younger, that were maybe more oblivious
to the potential manipulation.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, I wouldn't say,
I just looked out for them.
Do you know what I'm saying?
And it's not something that I would say,
oh, I was the guy that kind of was out
to solve all the problems.
No, but if I felt like something was a little bit off,
I'd tell someone.
I'd be like, eh, do you know what I'm saying?
Like, if you want to do whatever, do it, cool.
But if you have anything inside you disagrees with it, then don't.
People are often manipulated.
Well, yeah.
Yeah.
And I think that's, I didn't realise that that's what happened and it makes total sense, but yeah, it's really. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And I think that's, I didn't realise that that's what happened
and it makes total sense, but yeah, it's really...
Yeah, yeah.
So, yeah, and I haven't watched the thing back.
I don't plan on watching it.
Well, you experienced it, didn't you?
So you don't need to...
Exactly.
I know the truth behind the whole...
Yeah, right.
I've lived the truth.
You know what I'm saying?
Isn't it interesting that you butted heads,
however you emerged from that really well?
I had no idea.
I honestly had no idea.
There was a point I wanted to leave
and it wasn't for any bad reason.
It wasn't because I was upset.
You just didn't feel comfortable.
No, it's not even about being uncomfortable.
I just wasn't able to train for basketball.
Is it a bit boring as well?
Oh, it gets very boring because you have to sit around.
And what's the conversations around the dinner table?
You're a bit like, I mean, were there any conversations?
Like, you know, no, to be fair, a lot of the time I just sort of zoned out.
If I felt like it wasn't a conversation, that I had anything to say,
then I just wouldn't say anything.
Do you know what I'm saying?
I don't speak.
No, we saw you on the sun lounger with your sunglasses on and your bucket hat and you'd be zoning out.
Do they let you read while you're there?
Nah, you can't read.
What?
No, you can't. You can't do nothing.
Jessica.
You're not allowed to read a book, a novel or anything.
There's no clocks in there.
Jessica, it sounds like Alcatraz.
Well, I mean, it's interesting.
It's like house arrest.
But without the books.
Do you feel...
Yeah, did you...
I mean, maybe...
But I think...
But it's good.
We're glad you were entertained, darling.
Think about it, though.
Think about how much we're taken away by technology now
when we're in normal day-to-day life.
So I really enjoyed not having my phone
and, you know, for entertainment,
having to converse with someone.
Because these are skills that you guys
will probably attest to the same way I can slightly
because, you know, I feel like as guys are getting younger,
they don't know necessarily how to communicate anymore in person.
There's a lot of people skills that are dying out now
because of technology, you feel me?
But I think it's cool.
Jesse, you don't end up with a headache if you don't have your phone.
Piss off.
Ovi.
Max made it.
Ovi, what a pleasure to meet you.
Thank you so much for being here at Samsung KX.
Please come round to the house and have a barbecue with us.
Hey, you guys do the damn thing.
And I am going to try and hook you up with my cousin, Isabella.
Go and show him the picture.
Are you looking for love, Ovi?
I think everyone's looking for love, man.
That's the ultimate...
Good answer.
No, but it's the truth.
It's the truth.
Everyone's looking for love.
Anyone who says they don't want to be loved or don't, you know,
because ultimately everything we all do in life,
in one way or another, is to be accepted in some form.
And love is the ultimate form of being accepted by someone.
You are.
This guy.
I'm buying your book.
When's it out?
1st of October.
And it's called?
You are dope because you are.
I love it. I love it too dope because you are. I love it.
I love it too.
Thank you so much, Ovi.
Thank you, guys.
I hope the rest of your summer you get to play lots of basketball.
You get to, you know, see some friends cook for them.
And thanks for taking the time to be with us.
Thank you, guys.
I really appreciate it.
Thanks for having me.
Pleasure. pleasure.
Today's been really lovely, hasn't it?
It's been great. I still am trying to understand the fact that
the SmartThings app connects to all these
different Samsung appliances. Just
using your phone, it's been fabulous.
Thank you so much to Samsung KX for hosting us today
and letting us have a load of fun in your kitchen.
We've loved it.
Loved it.
Thank you so much for listening.
Ovi's book is going to be out on the 1st of October,
You Are Dope, and we can't wait to read it.
I can't get over how gorgeous he is.
I had to take my glasses off.
Thank you for listening and we will see you soon Bye.
