Hello and welcome to this bonus episode of Table Manners brought to you by Jameson Whiskey.
I'm Jessie Ware and I am here with my mum via Zoom, but we're going to have a little
bit of a cocktail party, aren't we mum, over Zoom this afternoon?
Oh, I'm just ready for a lovely drink, Jessie.
It's sundown somewhere, isn't it? But we are in the summer solstice, so therefore...
Yes, but it won't stop me, darling, from enjoying a lovely Jameson drink.
Well, listen, winter was tough for all of us, but we got through it and now the world
is going back to normal, we think. We're all looking forward to making the most of the
summer. Today, we are going to be joined by Tom Grennan.
Wow, number one-er.
I know, a bloody big top hit artist,
number one at the moment with Calvin Harris.
Yeah.
And we're going to be chatting all about
what our summer plans are.
I'm sure he's pretty busy this summer.
And things that we're really looking forward to doing
this summer that have been worth waiting for.
Well, darling, this Jameson whiskey sour
is really worth waiting for.
Sorry, have you turned into Tom Cruise whilst I've left you for a night?
Yeah, I've been shaking all the old ice cubes away.
Whiskey Sour.
It's so delicious, Jess, with the lemons.
My husband has, because Jameson are very sweet and sent us some bits and bobs,
sent me lots of Jameson Ginger and Lime,
but they did send my husband some Black Bar barrel and he has gone absolutely crazy about it so it would
have been a summer worth waiting for if he'd let me have a little bit of the black barrel but he's
drunk at all and also because i'm pregnant i am sticking with ginger and lime so in a few weeks
i'll be able to have the james and ginger and lime but at the moment it's strictly a ginger and lime
for me has he drunk it all he thinks he's John Draper in the evenings and like has the black barrel and
like you know nearly gets out a cigar. This is definitely my summer drink of the year. You know
I love a cocker tea as you call them. Is that what you say Jess? Well hold on Kathy Bates calls you a
cockadoody but we call a cocktail a cocky tea.
Tom Grennan has zoomed in. He's got his gamer headphones on and he's very happy to be here.
Nice to meet you, Tom. Good to meet you too. I'm very, very honoured to be here. Honestly,
I'm a massive fan and I've listened to the podcast for ages now.
So, yeah, I'm really happy to be here.
Thanks, mate.
Listen, you're number one at the moment.
Yeah, to be honest with you, it's crazy.
It's really, really... I feel like I'm in the eye of the storm right now
because obviously we can't go out and play shows
or we can't do proper promos.
So I'm kind of watching it all happen from home, which is like a weird experience but quite a nice experience too yeah because this
is your first number one right yeah as like singles goes yeah so I had a number one album in
March and then now the Calvin Harris song has gone to number one too so yeah but it must be crazy
because I mean yeah I know what it's like to put out records in lockdown.
It's weird.
Yeah, yeah.
And then, but this success and this level of success
and it's just like everyone's mad about you.
You're doing Alexandra Palace.
It's sold out.
Yes, I know.
One of my favourite venues as well.
And I remember going to see Royal Blood there.
Oh, yeah.
And I was like, oh, my God,
I'd love to be able to sell sell this out one day and now that
is happening I feel like I've manifested it for so long and now things are happening and I just
hope to god fingers crossed that we can do a show and it will happen so Tom have you played music
all your life I haven't no so when did it all start it all started for me when I was about 17 18 and I was playing
football before that who for I played for a team called Luton Town wow that's big time yeah semi
pro yeah it was like semi pro at the time but like I was only playing for the academy so I never got
given like a contract to say to say whether it was pro or not but then I was I was released from Luton and then
I was like what do I do and I was about to go to America and play because I got offered a scholarship
to go out there and and play football for like three years and then I was said I don't I don't
want to leave my mum it was too far away it was too far. Oh Jesse understands that. Yeah. I understand that. It was just too far away. And I kind of fell out of love with the game.
And just getting older as well, I was like, I had distractions with going out.
I had a girlfriend at the time.
And I don't know, just different distractions.
And then luckily, thankfully, I went to a party and there was a karaoke machine there.
And I got the confidence
to kind of jump on the karaoke machine and and sing a song and that's what I did and then
people like where's this come from you're pretty good at singing and I was like no no no and then
I joined a band and did the band thing for a while and then everybody went to uni and I was like
well what are we going to do because we've joined this band what do I do now so then I moved to London because I'm from a small town called Bedford and I moved to London and I
did acting at uni because I loved doing I loved doing drama at school and I thought you know I'm
just gonna do acting and that's when I picked up a guitar taught myself how to play guitar at uni
wrote some songs and then gigged them and gigged them
and gigged them throughout uni and went all over London and uh thankfully I got signed in a pub
in Fringery Park there was people from a record label in a pub having a drink and uh they were
like are these your songs and I was like yeah and they were like well do you have a manager I was
like no I don't and then it all was like a snowball from there and I got signed and stuff.
So how long ago was this?
That was about five years ago.
I was 21 when that happened.
So I need to know which karaoke song you sung.
Yeah, I sung a Kook song.
Oh, which one?
Seaside.
Do you want to go to the seaside?
I'm not trying to say that everybody wants to go
that tune i love that song fabulous that kooks record was bloody good oh my gosh it was so good
that was actually the first ever gig i ever went to as well a kooks a kook show was it yeah it was
so what gigs are you looking forward to going to when it all starts opening up again?
You're going to any this summer?
I'm doing obviously some festivals, hopefully.
I think we're doing Reading and Leeds.
Reading and Leeds, yeah, amazing.
Which will be amazing.
And then I think I'm doing like Carfest, which is Chris Evans' festival,
which is really good.
I love it there.
And I think I'm only doing a few like that.
And then hopefully September time comes the tour.
So, yeah.
So apart from hopefully being able to gig this summer,
what else are you looking forward to this summer
that you feel like you've been denied in the last year?
Do you know what?
Like, and this sounds so cliche, but I'm being truthful.
Like, I haven't spent much time with my grandparents and my grandma and
granddad, they're getting old now. Do you know what I mean?
And I got to see them for my birthday for the first time,
which was like June 8th.
And that was a really emotional time for me because I hadn't seen them for so
long.
So I'm actually going to try to spend as much time with them as I can over the
summer and just have some family time. During the first lockdown I actually moved back with my mum and dad
which was like an amazing time for me because I got time to really reset myself and kind of
I had a lot of stuff going on in my life where I needed to be reminded that my mum and dad were
like the ones who unconditionally
loved me do you know what I mean and yeah and it was so nice and I really really reset myself and
press the reset button and and uh yeah so this summertime I'm just going to be with family and
with my girlfriend and just have just have good times so let's talk about the girlfriend yeah
yeah how long you been together Where have you been going out?
What's your drink of choice?
Yeah.
Does she like a cocktail like I do?
She does like a cocktail.
Which cocktail does she like?
She likes a kind of a sweet cocktail.
We actually went out, she took me out for my birthday to a place called Sexy Fish.
Oh yeah.
I had never been there before and it was unbelievable.
Was it fun? it was really fun and obviously like there was a little dj playing and she was playing like really
good music and it was the first time where you where we felt like we can kind of not bop our
heads and have have some like enjoy live music again and and the atmosphere of that and the food was great as well like we had uh black cod
we had that yellow yellow something tail it was really nice I had sushi and um lovely and yeah
and cocktails which is nice so Tom I literally before we started this I had somebody knock at
the door um from a charity called Nordoff Robbins that I don't know if you know about
and they're an amazing charity for music and um i'd done some signing things for them that and this bloke was turning
up very sweet guy couldn't see much of him behind the mask and i said i'm really sorry he was like
i'm really sorry i'm late i'm like it's cool but i've got tom grennan on my podcast in like
five minutes so here's here's my things he went oh i play football with tom grennan no way who was that yeah on james
bay's football team yeah i played last night ah tom wakefield oh yeah yeah of course yeah and i
said is he any good now i should have done my research and realized that he was semi-pro and
you were looting town but like he was like yeah he's really good and he's really nice bloke so i
need to know who else is on james bay's team. How did you get into James Bay's football team?
Five side?
Yeah.
Do you know what?
I was actually talking to James Bay about your podcast yesterday.
I was like,
I'm going on the podcast.
Then he was like,
oh,
you're going to have such a good time.
He was a delight.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I listened to the episode.
It was wicked.
I loved that.
But who's in James Bay's football team?
I'm in it.
Russell Howard's in it.
Bloody hell.
You need to recruit all these people for the bloody podcast, please, babe.
Report back.
Danny from Mutt Fly's in it.
Tom, obviously, who you've just met, is in it.
And then loads of musicians.
So some of James's band play in it and some music industry people industry people Tom does James Bay play with his hat on?
James Bay doesn't play with his hat on
but I would love to see him play
with the hat on
but do you know what he's really good at football
he's really good
are you watching the Euros?
I am watching the Euros yeah
you went to a match didn't you?
I did go to a match
you're kidding me You went to a match, didn't you? I did go to a match. You're kidding me.
I did, yeah.
Wow.
I went to England-Scotland.
The boring one.
The boring one, yeah.
It was honestly a bore.
Was it boring, really?
It felt it.
It really was.
It was so slow.
It was like watching championship football.
Why are they playing so slowly?
Just explain to me.
I don't know.
They're all young, handsome, vibrant men,
and they go backwards the whole bloody time.
It's driving me mad.
I know, I know.
Do you know, I think Southgate just wants to have that either draw or win,
just to put us through.
Who would you have starting at the front?
Grealish, Jesse.
I would have Grealish as well.
You know.
He's bloody good.
He is so good.
Have you seen the size
of his calf muscles as well?
I was going to say,
God, you're going to say
something else, Tom.
Please, Tom.
It's a clean show.
We want our Marcus to play.
I know.
Are you a Man United fan?
Yeah, big.
Oh, so am I.
Come on.
Are you?
Yeah.
I love him so much. I love him so much.
I love him so much
and what a,
just what a lovely man.
What a fabulous person,
yeah.
I'm kind of sad
that Jesse Lingard
wasn't included.
So am I.
Because I think
he would have been
a bit of oomph
for the team.
Yeah.
I would love to go
to the football with you now.
I'd love,
I'd love to go.
Get us the tickets,
darling, we're there.
Listen, mum,
you may have found you're in. Tom Grennan, number one, gets tickets to Wembley. I'm actually to go and talk with you now. I'd love to go. Get us the tickets, darling. Listen, Mum, you may have found your in.
Tom Grennan, number one, gets tickets to Wembley.
I'm actually, Jessie, I'm free on Tuesday.
Oi, oi.
Tom, if you want me to come.
Just so you know, Tom.
100%.
If I can get tickets, I'll give you a shout.
Tell me, darling.
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
Now, listen, Tom, we need to ask you some things about food.
Yes.
Because you're on the podcast. you say you're a fan,
so we need to ask you,
who was cooking around the dinner table when you were younger
and were you a good eater?
I was quite a fussy eater when I was younger.
My mum was a cookery teacher,
so she was really good and she still is really good.
So it'd be my mum and my grandma who would be cooking for us, really.
And, like, my dad's Irish, so...
Oh, does he like a Jameson?
He did like a Jameson.
My dad stopped drinking when I was born.
Are you an only child?
No, I've got a little brother as well who's 20 now,
so he's actually a young man.
But yeah, my mum, my grandma.
And then when we'd go back to Ireland, it'd be my granny.
So, but like just potatoes and gammon really in Ireland.
And that cabbage with bits of bacon in.
And cabbage with bacon in it, yeah.
Yeah.
But I love it.
I need to know though, so your your mom was i cookery school like so she so was she really clever with how she got
vegetables into you or were you still pretty fussy she was pretty clever like she would make
a lot of soup and uh i know that if i was to say what would be my last meal, a soup would be in there.
Do you know what I mean?
All right, let's go into the last meal.
You've just done a beautiful segue there.
All right.
We ask everybody the last supper.
So you've got a starter, a main, a pud, a drink of choice, go.
Yeah.
All right then.
For my start, I would have my mum's soup,
which is like, it sounds like it wouldn't be nice,
but it is really nice it's leek celery stilton and onion and um i think there might be a little bit of broccoli in
there as well but it's all like soup together and just that taste of the stilton just comes through
and it's so how delicious that's delicious it is. So you start with that. I start, how many starters am I allowed?
Oh, babe, it's your last supper.
You do what you like.
Go mad.
All right then.
So I'd have her soup with my granny's like Irish bread,
which is like soda bread.
Soda bread.
Yeah.
Oh, lovely.
Yeah, it's so nice with just a nice slap of like butter on it.
Lovely.
Yeah.
Gorgeous.
And then I'd like, and then I'd like and then I'd like
niche it up a bit I'd have like uh some mussels because I love mussels in like a white wine sauce
love it so this is all quite white based kind of slightly creamy I'm getting an indication you're
not lactose intolerant no I'm not 100% not and then I would go a fish pie because I don't actually eat meat anymore
so I'm pescatarian so I would go for a lovely fish pie what do you like in your fish pie
like the the Jamie Oliver one with the scallops and salmon yeah I wouldn't I wouldn't put scallops
in there I'm not a fan of a scallop no I'm not a fan of a scallop. No, I'm not a fan of a scallop. Oh, I love them. Really.
See, I probably haven't had a real good scallop before.
But I'd go salmon.
I'd go prawns, like big ones.
I'd put like...
Cod.
Cod in there.
Yeah.
Definitely.
I need to know, can you cook?
I think he can, Jess.
He's got an...
I'd give it a go.
He's a bit of an overachiever.
I feel like he was going to be a professional footballer,
got a bit bored of that,
then was going to do acting,
then some karaoke,
and now is probably going to be on like,
win bloody celebrity master.
Do you know what?
I'm going to be honest with you.
I'm rubbish at cooking.
Are you?
Yeah, I am.
Do you know what?
If I gave it some time,
I would try to be good at it, but I can't be arsed. Is your girlfriend good? Do you know what? If I gave it some time, I would try to be good at it.
But I can't be arsed.
Is your girlfriend good?
Do you live with your girlfriend?
No, not yet.
But she lives down the road.
We've moved to Hampstead and she's moved down the road.
And it's great.
It's an amazing area.
How did you meet?
We actually met in a bar, in a lift, actually.
Wow.
No social distancing then, darling.
No, it was just before
the lockdown thank god yeah but then because of lockdown like we were on facetime and and she'll
be listening to this but we're on facetime and it kind of was like should we just should we just
leave it for a while just because if this is too hard and and you know I mean so we left it for a
while and then we're like, if we reconnect.
It wasn't like you were going out wild.
You were living with your mum.
That's what I mean, yeah.
Yeah, like it wasn't like, yeah, she needed to worry that you were.
But you could have gone for warts together.
It would have been a rather Victorian courtship.
Well, I moved back to Bedford.
She was in London.
Oh, right.
Yeah.
But we were like, if we reconnect, then we reconnect and we'll see what happens.
And then we did. And yeah, it's been, she's honestly amazing.
And she's Italian. So her mum cooks now.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah. She's an unbelievable cook.
So you've met the mother?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Her family are wicked. I love them. Yeah.
And so your girlfriend, what's her name? Are we allowed to talk about her name?
Yeah, yeah. Daniel what's her name are we allowed to talk about her name yeah yeah daniella her name is daniella so is daniella good uh does she look after you does
she literally does she cook you a good dinner or is it her mother cooking for you yeah do you know
what she takes she's taking recipes from her mom she met her mom makes this um like italian sauce
and she she's really good at making the sauce i'll give her that um but she does look after me
and she does cook me some great meals, yeah.
So, okay, we've got fish pie for the main.
Fish pie for the main.
Pudding.
Sticky toffee pudding with custard.
Do you know...
Ooh.
Yeah, but so many people love sticky toffee pudding.
I know.
Do you know what?
I've actually said to myself,
I've never met anybody who doesn't like a sticky toffee pudding.
No.
And I haven't. And I'd slightly question if they didn't like a sticky toffee pudding no and i haven't and i'd
slightly question if they didn't like a sticky toffee pudding do you know it's quite hard to
make though it's not that easy because you make it with dates are you a good baker as well as
cook really i'm not i'm terrible jesse's not i i'm not bad but i made something really good
yesterday i made a polenta cake that everyone thought was, it was so good.
With lemon.
It's a lemon.
And it was like a lemon syrup in it.
And it was great.
It was bloody good.
But you haven't tried a sticky toffee pudding.
You left that when Alex did that for Clara Amfo
on the first ever podcast.
I'll have another go at it.
I've got dates to make that.
Next time you have a go, can I come over and try it?
Yeah, of course you can, darling. I'd love to see you. Thank you. So go can i come over and try it yeah of course you can darling
i'd love to see you thank you so tom i need to just know you're so charismatic and it's so
lovely to see a nice person doing well thank you and it's just i feel like it must just be
quite overwhelming at the moment yeah well it yeah it's not because i'm not i know because i'm at home
and i'm not having to be going to this place, that place and another.
So it's quite like, quite nice.
So how did you record the song with Calvin? Was it all remote?
Yeah, so he, he messaged me on Instagram and I was actually on the toilet when he messaged me, right?
Oh, wow.
I know. And I was going through, I was going through my message on the toilet and then I see Calvin Harris messaged and I couldn't believe it and I was like oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh and I rang
my manager I was like Calvin's messaging me what do we what do I say what like do I play it cool
do I play it cool like yes yeah and I applied straight away and to be honest with you he is
such a nice man just like really down-to- and um was i've got this song that i've
had for like three or four years and he was like i've just found it in like his library of songs
and he was like i feel like you could really like fit nicely on this song and and i'm right to this
song so we did and i sent it back like maybe two days later and he was like this is going to be my next
single and I was like oh my gosh I can't believe it and then literally the turnover from what
wasn't a song to what now is by your side is was so quick because usually these things take
I don't know months and months as you know Jessie? But it wasn't. It was like three or four weeks, which is crazy.
So do you think you'll ever meet him in person?
Yeah, 100%.
Like, I went to Vegas for an Estadio maybe last July,
and I went to watch him play.
So when I was on FaceTime with him and stuff, I was like,
you've got to promise me that there'll be a vegas round two
but me performing and he was like of course so yeah we will meet that'll be fun so you know you
you've been to stag do's in vegas gone see calvin harris have you got any have you got any live gigs
that you're going to that aren't your own gigs have you got your eye on anything i haven't booked
any any yet but i definitely want to see this girl called Nea.
Oh, she's the best.
Oh, my God.
She's so good.
I love her.
She's so good.
She just released a new song, and it's amazing.
Yeah, she's bloody.
She's really great.
She's kind of the sweetest person.
She's amazing live.
I don't know if she's doing anything.
I don't know if she's doing anything.
I don't know, but I do know that she's writing, I think, another album. She is amazing live. I don't know if she's doing anything. I don't know if she's doing anything. I don't know. But I do know that she's writing, I think, another album.
She is amazing.
We love her.
She had a baby in lockdown and then she's been doing her thing as well
whilst putting out music.
She's just phenomenal.
So is there a scent that brings you back to somewhere in particular?
It can be a good scent.
It could be a horrendous scent but something
that brings back such nostalgia for you I feel like when we were younger and this is such a
random thing but when we were younger to we put down jumpers for like goal posts and like it'd be
like our our uh like uniform so everyone would have the same uniform so we put everyone put their
jumpers down and the way to to kind of find out whose jumper was whose you would smell them
and you're kidding that's charlie's or so blokes yeah you have pheromones that smell
different i think so but i feel like it's probably their mum's washing powder. Oh, yeah, I know what you mean.
So we were like, I'd smell them.
So if I smell like someone walked past me who's got that washing...
Lenore or something.
Lenore, yeah.
And it takes me back to like a friend who I might have not seen
for years and years and years.
And then I go, oh, my gosh, that reminds me of Sam.
And then I will message Sam and she'll be like,
how are you doing, mate?
I haven't heard or seen or spoke to you for ages.
And then that will spark up conversation.
So that's what I, that's, scents like that I love.
Do you know what I mean?
Are you a bit of a romantic, Tom?
I'm a little bit of a romantic, to be fair.
I love that Tom Grennan is talking about Lenore
and the scent of his mate's old laundry detergent.
I just love that.
It's very, very lovely.
Tom, I'm drinking the most delicious Jameson Whiskey Sour
and it's just divine.
Such a wonderful summer drink.
What are you drinking at the minute?
I'm also having a Jameson.
Which one are you having?
The same as me or are you?
The same as you, yeah.
It's delicious.
It's lovely.
It is lovely.
Has Daniela tried it?
She has.
She's good with the old cocktail shaker.
Oh, me too.
I've got mine here.
Yeah, I've got mine.
Yeah, she's good with that.
I was rubbish with it.
She's good.
Well, I can't even enjoy it.
My husband drunk
all my bloody black barrel
because I'm pregnant,
heavily pregnant.
So he was like,
there you go,
enjoy your ginger and lime.
When is your baby due?
In two weeks.
Two weeks, wow.
Yeah, it's due on the day
of the Euro finals.
Yeah, that's why I'm on
a pregnancy ball now.
So that's why, yeah,
I'm due on the Euro finals, but I mean, it a pregnancy ball now so that's what yeah i'm due on the i'm
due on the euro finals but i mean it won't come then it'll be late
where are you booking to go to eat? Now, you live in London now.
Yeah.
Where's your spot that you will go to eat that you, you know,
maybe you haven't been yet, but you're looking forward to going to?
Do you know what?
My spot for, like, a nice kind of afternoon or early breakfast
would be a place called Pelicci's in East London.
Oh, the CAF, the institution, Bethnal Green.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I lived in Bethnal Green for a while and it was just like the go-to.
And like, again, it's just a good vibe in there.
Everybody's so like lovely and everybody's just up.
They're proper East London, do you know what I mean?
Proper East London.
What's your order when you go to Pelicci's? I do love their tuna baguette to be honest tuna baguette you and Dan Levy from
Schitt's Creek like a tuna baguette really yeah I love it I do I I understand you know what I I
really understand that do you how do you do you make a good tuna mayo at home uh yeah do you know I hate
mayonnaise and I hate salad cream but with tuna you have to you have to put like just a little
bit of mayonnaise in there so I put try to put as as little as I can but yeah I'd say I make a
decent tuna baguette put put uh put some sweet corn in there I've tried to like I've tried to
entice my children with it
they're still having none of it i used to love having tuna mayo pasta with sweet corn and like
loads of cheese on the top and they're having none of it so so tom where i mean you must have
traveled a bit with your job before lockdown here yeah where's been your favourite place that you've got to eat in? Which country?
Probably like South Africa.
Oh, wow.
When did you go there?
I went there.
I played two shows over there and I shot a video there as well.
So I've been there a few times now.
Such good food.
The food is unbelievable. That fish, King Clip.
Yes.
Oh, my God.
It's so meaty. And the wine is great. That fish, king clip. Yes. Oh. Oh, my God. It's so meaty.
So meaty.
And the wine is great.
Everything's gorgeous there.
So good.
I'd say South Africa or Greece.
I love Greece.
Oh.
Where do you go in Greece?
I've been to a few places.
I've been to Santorini.
