A message from the Taskmaster podcast. It's Ed Gamble here, the host of the Taskmaster podcast.
We'll be chatting about another episode of Taskmaster today.
And we've been talking about Series 5, haven't we? Do you remember that?
I hope you've been watching along with us, re-watchwatching the episodes then listening to the podcast about that episode today we're talking about the last
episode of series five episode eight because this is the the last series before they switch to the
10 episodes which is a real shame it'll be a shame to say goodbye to this lineup it's been a really
really good series i know it's a very popular one and today we'll be talking about series 5 episode 8 with Kerry Godleman.
Kerry Godleman, champion of series 7, participant in upcoming champion of champions, when will it
be on? I don't know, stop asking me. She's brilliant, she's a wonderful actor, wonderful
comedian, wonderful writer, she is appearing in many things. She's appearing in Trigger Point on
ITV at the moment, a serious bomb drama and then then, of course, she's on tour doing her show Bosch.
You must go and see it on the 5th of February at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.
Check out Kerry's website for details there.
But before you do that, let's listen to Kerry as my guest on the Taskmaster podcast
talking about Series 5, Episode 8.
on the Taskmaster podcast talking about series five episode eight.
Welcome back Kerry to the Taskmaster podcast. Oh it's lovely to be back. It's so lovely to have you back here of course that you don't really need any introduction but champion
series seven. I always want that introduction. Taskmaster legend yes yeah you insist on that
introduction everywhere you go
everywhere I go, on the school run, at the supermarket
that's how I like to walk into a room
now we need a quick trophy update
has the trophy been moved from the garage to any pride of place?
nope, it's still very firmly in the garage
it likes it there
I, unlike you, can't think of anywhere inside the house to put it still very firmly in the garage. It likes it there.
I, unlike you, can't think of anywhere inside the house to put it.
But that to me shows that you're not proud of the achievement at all, Kerry.
No, true, not true.
Very proud of the title, Not So Clean On The Clutter.
I see.
So you're actually, you love the title. You're actually, you're just less materialistic than I am.
I like memories and I like accolades. I just don't want admin. I don't want to have to dust my accolades.
OK, but what about when you're 80 to 90 and some of the memories are fading, don't you want to have something to look at?
And you can see it on your shelf and you go, oh, remember that when when I was on Taskmaster and I was the champion.
Firstly I really like your impression of me as an old lady. Thank you. And secondly by then I won't
give a shit about Taskmaster will I? I'm hoping. That'll be all you have Kerry. Oh Ed how dare you
I'll have done loads of amazing things.
I might even have an Oscar by then, and it will be in the garage.
If I get an Oscar, it's going in the garage.
I 100% believe that as well.
Yeah, there'll be a BAFTA in there, an Oscar, a Nobel Peace Prize.
They're all going in the garage.
But the thing is, if you do have all of those things
and you keep them in the garage Yeah
And you don't have them in plain sight like people come over to visit and you'll be going
I want an Oscar I want Taz Mask and they'll be like oh no she's really lost it now
No no they'll know because everybody will know because of the internet
Right okay
They'll have the information and if they need it being proved which is very shallow
I think I'll take them into the garage and show them
Yes yeah that's good's good actually. And just now and then I'll post a picture on Twitter so
that people know it's true. Yeah it's not weird at all is it to not display your trophies but if
people really insist take them into the garage to show them. Not weird at all. In this weird world
Ed that's not weird. Come into my garage and look at my trophy if i had an appropriate room to put it in
i would put it in like a trophy cabinet if i get an oscar i'll get a trophy cabinet and it can come
out all right okay well you need a big trophy cabinet for the head because it is it is quite
too large it's really big i mean as trophies go it's big. It's like one of those disproportionately huge karate ones.
It's like the one in Cobra Kai.
It's massive.
That's why I like it.
I love showing it off, as you well know.
I know you do.
I can see it on the Zoom now.
Yep, I have it in the backgrounds of the Zooms
for all the podcasts I do,
just to let people know that however well the podcast goes,
I've had a better life.
Good for you.
Now, Kerry,
we're obviously going to be
talking about
the final episode
of Series 5 today.
I guess you're a fan
of the majority
of the contestants.
Any that you want to
particularly single out
for being good
and any that you want
to slag off now? No one you want to slag off now?
No one I want to
slag off. I think it's a really great
line-up, Season 5. It's a really
great line-up. I mean, Bob obviously
is wonderful. I mean, you know
my phrase, human tapas. I think this might
be the peak of human
tapas with regards to certain personality
types. It's a bit shambolic, actually.
They're all a little bit mad, don't they? They all have a a bit shambolic actually they're all a little
bit mad don't they they all have a streak of madness to them they're all a little bit they're
like not rough around the edges but you never necessarily know what any of them's going to do
no one plays it with i'd say the kerry godlin and straight bat no not all the ed gamble straight
bat i would say our type isn't in there i don't think think. But all of them, I wouldn't be remotely surprised
if they just slip into, like, surrealism.
Surrealism is close for all of them, if you know what I mean.
They've got that maverick wild side.
I think surrealism is generous for Nish.
I think incompetence...
Oh, yeah, maybe you're right. Yeah, no, you're right.
Yes, but you could argue that his incompetence is so incompetent,
it's borderline surreal.
Yeah, it's on the verge of surrealism.
Yeah, it crosses over.
But also, it's like, yeah, your classic surrealism
is two things next to each other that shouldn't be together.
Yes.
And Nish's stage persona versus what he's actually like in real life
is that they're so incongruous that they're almost surreal.
Absolutely, because I'm more familiar with Nish on Mash Report where he's wearing a suit and looks like a grown-up.
And then on Taskmaster, he's mad.
I mean, he's just doing crazy shit.
So I wasn't used to that Nish.
Yeah, I mean, yes, he wears a suit and he wears a suit whenever he gigs
as well but let me tell you if you sit front row of one of his gigs you can see there's food stains
on that suit all of the time good good so he's got that sort of supply teacher vibe yeah he came
over to uh to mine at new year's uh and he was wearing a nice shirt uh for new year's i'd say
within 10 minutes he'd spilt a full drink down the front
uh and we had to wash his shirt for him and he was topless basically for all of new year's
so i mean let's let's talk about the uh individual contestants uh when's talk about the individual contestants
when we talk about the prize task,
the most awkward item for somebody else to take home.
It's a great category.
Yes, it's really great, isn't it?
Because the two interpretations are, you know, physically awkward,
which obviously Mark smashed that,
or like emotionally or kind of socially awkward,
which Bob went for, but Greg didn't go for it, did he?
Yeah, it's interesting because I actually think Bob
was the only one to interpret it in that way.
Would you have interpreted it that way?
No, I think I probably would have just gone massive.
Physical.
Massive thing.
But then you do have a little bit more time
to think about these things, I guess.
So I probably would have gone around the houses with it a bit. But yeah, Bob's the only one to interpret it like that. massive thing um but then you do have a little bit more time to think about these things i guess so
i probably would have gone around the houses with it a bit but yeah bob's the only one to
interpret it like that so it's odd he doesn't get extra points because he brought in the i love katie
hopkins hat and uh i love donald trump t-shirt yeah um but i and greg says it wouldn't be awkward
to get home because you put it in a bag. You put it in a bag, yeah.
But that's not the only thing.
For somebody else to take home, you've got to think about the impact of when you get it home and you get it out of the bag.
Yeah, he just didn't go with the spirit of it, did he?
He just shut it down.
Yeah, so I really think that was, for me, that was three points plus because it stood out from the crowd.
Yeah, no, I agree.
I was surprised he dismissed that one.
But weirdly, Bob didn't sell it, did he?
Bob just kind of almost lost faith in it in the presentation.
Yeah, he backed down on the presentation, which is odd for Bob.
He's been very good at those price tasks.
But also, I think he took everyone by surprise
by saying that he doesn't believe it anymore.
That's what I mean.
He kind of just, I think if i'd gone down that road
i'd have done a much harder sale you would have said you still you believe it you love kate
hopkins you love donald trump no but i'd have been like look come on let's go let's role play
the awkwardness of these these items yeah and also i think everyone would have believed that
you love kate hopkins and donald trump what well you know you're a very good actor kerry
and also and also you do love you do love those two people love Katie Hopkins and Donald Trump. What? Well, you know you're a very good actor, Kerry. Oh, right.
And also you do love those two people.
No, no.
Yeah, I'm not that good an actor.
Yeah, I was
surprised that Greg didn't give that a little
bit more. Yes.
Yeah, I mean, you know, I guess the people
attached to it probably don't
deserve points connected to their name, so fair enough.
Oh, no. Fair enough.
Aisling brought in a giant cardboard cutout of herself.
Yeah, that was funny.
Yeah, there was a little reinterpretation of awkward there as well
because her pose is incredibly awkward as well.
Yes, yes. Doesn't look comfortable.
No, so it's the big cardboard cutout,
which would be awkward physically
to you know get onto the tube or get into a cab or whatever yeah then also the fact that she's sort
of awkwardly posed with a thumb a thumbs up yeah and I think you know taking home a giant cardboard
cutout of Aisling B and trying to explain that to someone you live with and be like well I've
just got this now might be awkward as well so I felt like you deserve more have you ever had one
of those cardboard cutouts in your life of Not of Aisling but of anyone?
No I don't think I have. I think I used to be obsessed with them. Like when I was a teenager
I used to go into cinemas and ask if I could have the old ones.
Oh really?
But I never actually got one.
No I've never had one. I do remember a student house when I was a student and there was one
of Vic Reeves floating about oh really yeah because a friend of mine was a mad Vic Reeves fan and she had one of him
I I did used to have um do you remember in Edinburgh uh at the Edinburgh Festival I think
they still do them where they have the big lamppost ads yes um and like they're big sort of
like long posters that are redesigned to fit on lampposts. And they were like double sided.
I took one of my old ones when I was in a double act back from Edinburgh to keep as a memento.
But on the other side was a Richard Herring poster for a show he used to do called Talking Cock.
And it went into the wardrobe at my mum's house where i was living at
the time and then i obviously moved out and didn't take it with me so every time my mum opened the
wardrobe there was richard herring with an action man uh and talking cock yeah talking cock written
on it oh god she must really struggle when she sees richard they have awful flashbacks that's
pretty awkward to take home that is really awkward Is that what you would make your offering? Yeah, a picture of Richard Herrig. No, people keep asking who he is. It's really awkward.
It's awkward. It's embarrassing. Sally, this is quite straight down the line, but a really good
example of it. A hundred helium balloons. Yes, very beautiful. When I saw it at the end,
I thought how stunning it looked. Yeah, and she said that you could be carried home by it.
And Alex made the point of saying it's only three kilograms.
But I reckon Sally's about the same as a little penguin chick.
I reckon she would be picked up by those balloons.
But that's what I mean.
She dipped into surrealism with that one, didn't she?
She just went into a different space.
Yes, totally, totally. It was good, though. It was very sweet and lovely. to surrealism with that one didn't she she just went into a different space yes totally totally
it was very sweet and lovely um nish uh nish brought 14 kilos of curry and a massive open
topped wok yeah that was mad which is perfect because i think when he revealed that um it was
in the wok so it wasn't like you could take the 14 kilograms of curry home in uh tupperware and
wheels tupperware yeah exactly you do have to carry the wok uh and then uh and then i think that made it
a whole lot more awkward and if it was burning hot as well imagine trying to sit yeah yeah and i did
like greg's little role play with that one it was lovely lovely to see greg role play being on the
tube which i don't think he's been on the tube for about eight years i just like any role play
to be honest i really like a bit of role play I used to do role play for a job medical role play I had to play a woman with deep vein
thrombosis all day I mean you're you are you are going to have to tell us more well in the world
in the world of work real work jobs um often there's actors used for training purposes so like I used to do
that for a job like roleplay companies go into the workspace and delegates
employees will practice certain situations with actors so they will
roleplay certain situations so and they will do it either I mean whether it's
you know appraisals for, practicing appraisals or delivering difficult messages to people or in the medical context, when they're doing exams, they have to do these.
The acronym was OSCEs, but I can't remember what it stood for.
Yeah.
And it was just like a huge room with all these little stations.
And in each little station was an actor with a different medical condition.
Oh, my God. And the doctors would have to go around and this bell would ring every seven minutes
where they had to just sort of diagnose each of these people.
Speed diagnosis.
Speed diagnosis.
I don't know why this hasn't been pitched as a television programme.
And I'd be in these rooms with, like, postnatal depression or deep vein thrombosis
and have to do it all day.
And every seven minutes this bell would ring and they'd be like move on and what what is it about you that meant you were cast as deep
deep vein thrombosis woman i don't knows maybe i've got chunky calves i don't know i don't know
these were the medical these are the only ones that stayed in my head i probably did loads of
different ones but the phrase deep vein thrombosis is just funny isn't it it just stays with you like it's fun to say there are some things that are just funny to say
is that where is that where deep deep vein thrombosis lady was from
but they do know that you're role-playing right it's not like a mystery shopper thing oh no no
no absolutely they know that that's what you're there to do yeah oh that's great i love that so you would have you
would have loved to have been in the walk the walk i would have loved it it's a little piece it's a
little piece of theater with greg davis on a tube that's lovely you do love a little piece of
theater i love a little piece of theater um mark watson uh got the five points with a full bathroom swift.
I loved that. I loved it.
This is real, full, classic Watson commitment to an excellent idea.
I mean, this is fairly standard for Mark,
who finds an idea, commits himself fully to it.
But unfortunately, I'd say 60% to 70% of the time,
Greg finds it hilarious to give him low points.
Oh, I see. Because of the commitment.
Oh, that's mean.
That's really cruel.
Or he messes it up and he just looks like such a sad sack.
But here it was the five points because this is great.
This is exactly what you want.
Is this where you would have gone?
Yeah.
You would have gone with big and awkward and...
I think so.
Yeah, yeah.
I think so.
Yeah, no, it was really good.
And not just the bath or just the sink,
but the whole thing, the whole suite.
Yeah, it was really great.
The toilet's the funniest thing.
Yes.
Really funny.
To have to take that home.
Brilliant.
Loved it.
The well-deserved five points there for Mark Watson.
It was one for Bob, two for Aisling, three for Sally,
four for Nish and five for Mark's bathroom.
I've bought 14 kilograms of curry.
Would that be awkward? I mean, look, take me for an example. Would that be awkward for me to get out the studio? Well, it's in a walk
Let's roleplay Alex I'll get on the tube. Oh, yeah
What have you got there 14 kilograms of curry You seem to have dropped your newspapers. Oh, that's awkward. Yes!
Task one.
Get this coconut as far away from here as possible.
You may not touch the ground.
You may not step on anything more than once.
The coconut may not travel by car.
You have 20 minutes.
Your time starts now.
Tricky one, this, I thought.
It's a great one, though't it yeah it's a really good simple but clever task yeah and i do like that they at series five
they're sort of aware of some of the tropes of things people do on taskmaster so they've taken
out the car option which we've seen a lot in the in the series in the lead up to this we've seen a
lot of getting in a cab or putting something in a car getting a taxi drivers to take it far away
so to remove that and just have the pure thing have you've got to get away from here but you're
not allowed to touch the ground i absolutely say sorry remind me did it specifically say don't get
in a car yeah the coconut may not travel by car okay but you could have got it on a bus or you
could have put it in a different
vehicle couldn't you totally but i think it'd be tricky if you're not allowed to touch the ground
yeah to go to the bus stop to go to the bus stop i think and 20 minutes isn't quite long enough quite
yeah and i'm just thinking i'm not sure there's any bus stops immediately outside yeah okay fair
enough helicopter would you have been able to arrange some other kind of
vehicle to take i guess you could get a helicopter maybe in 20 minutes i mean like you're you're doing
very well you've got a lot of acting work i'm sure you've got a you've got a drone yeah people
everyone's got a drone now haven't they in the back of their um handbag so someone around close
by would have a drone and you could stick it on a drone. Yeah, these days. These days?
Aren't you weary of drone shots?
So many drone shots.
There actually is a drone shot, I think,
in this episode during the song.
So there was a drone kicking around,
but now they've already...
When we did the show Outsiders together,
I mean, people who watched it,
you'll know that at the beginning
you see a one second shot of us all
walking up a hill with all of our luggage.
There's a drone shot there.
Just a little bit of behind the scenes.
We walked up that hill six times.
So we did.
Poor Lou had a wheelie suitcase
and it was quite muddy.
I will go as far as to say that was Lou's fault.
Yeah. For bringing a wheelie suitcase to a camping show.
Yeah. But that's funny. It's funny. It's a comedy camping show.
So she didn't do it to be funny though. She did it because she didn't think it through.
Yeah. I do remember we walked up and when you watch these things back and they're over in a blink and you think, bloody hell, we spent hours walking up that hill.
Yeah. Yeah. And I was looking to you as to when I should start complaining about the amount of times we walked up the hill.
Because really? Yeah, because you've done a lot of acting.
You've done drama. You've done sitcom.
And obviously part of acting and filming like narrative stuff is doing the same thing over and over again.
like narrative stuff is doing the same thing over and over again yes so i was waiting for you to say what are we doing it again to just well to see when it was unreasonable that we were doing it
again now you've discovered that i'm happy to play a woman with date vein thrombosis all day
and repeat it every seven minutes you know where the bar is with me and repetition so don't look
upon me as to chuck a hissy fit i'm one of those tedious like stoic
actors it's like it's you know we'll do it as many times as we need even if it is walking up a hill
and you're definitely not going to use it anyway if he needs that shot if kubrick needs that shot
we'll give him that shot well uh yes no drone no one used a drone. In fact, a lot of people went with the same sort of thing.
Yeah, they did, yes.
Yeah, Nish, I mean, Nish, Bob and Aisling really
both sort of went for stepping on things and then throwing.
I mean, Nish got to the door.
He didn't even try and walk outside, actually.
I mean, this is just fantastic.
Oh, it was heartbreaking.
Nish's was heartbreaking.
I mean, his could have been so wonderful.
It was so close.
But the bouncing back and then rolling.
What did he bounce off?
That weird scaffolding thing covered in camouflage netting
that they have in the background.
That was heartbreaking.
Yeah, very heartbreaking.
And then the reveal that he absolutely could have thrown it again
because he had four minutes left.
There were two brilliant reveals in the studio when they watched it back
that were just great for that round yeah um ashling uh ashling pretty straightforward i mean
i think out of all of all of the contestants she has the most practical brain in terms of just
getting on with things so she's more like us yeah i think so but then also there's that edge with
ashling where you're like she's so creative and like she can do something bizarre at any second could go
rogue yeah not that we're not creative carrie we just want to win i'm not creative i i don't go
rogue i just go route one um well ashling is cushions pillows uh to get to the cushions and
pillows fine yeah but then very strange decision to just roll it through a hole in a fence.
Yeah, like she definitely had a plan in her head, but the plan felt wrong.
Yeah, it was really stupid.
She definitely should have logged it.
She could have over-armed it and it would have been great.
But I think maybe she felt like she could look through the fence
and sort of see where it was going.
So that was a better idea than just chucking it into oblivion.
But you've just got to lob and hope, really, you oh that was that's my theory mate lob and hope lob
and hope that's the title of your autobiography isn't it definitely definitely lob it um bob bob
used a similar technique and used paper to walk outside that was good yeah but he was genuinely
going to throw that into the road that is a really busy road and no one was stopping him.
No, that was silly.
And also because he had a massive pile of paper,
he could have just kept going.
He could have kept going until he ran out of paper
and the 20 minutes expired.
He should have done.
And he should have gone out on the paper to the bridge
and dropped it in the river.
Yeah.
He just sort of fizzled out, didn't he?
Yeah, just threw it and fucked it.
Mark went with the river technique, which is good.
It's something that Tim Key tried in series one.
And the piggyback, great, great idea.
But totally ruined it.
A technique that we saw Aisling employ earlier in the series.
She got a piggyback from Alex.
But Mark gets the piggyback.
Great idea.
And then just fucks it
we all have those moments
did he literally have the moment of realisation
in the studio
I think he seems to suggest that he'd had
some sleepless nights since so I'd imagine
he realised
it was spectacularly stupid
really really dumb because I think it
sort of sums Mark up
he's so invested and so clever
and then it'll just be one mad moment
where he'll just completely chuck it away
great telly though
great telly
but he would have won this
it would have been another five points
there's a couple of things
things could have been different
he could have won
he could have won
I know but you can't go over these things
it's not good for you yeah we can say that we won but I know, but you can't go over these things. It's not good for you.
Yeah, we can say that. We won.
But I did love his response that he sort of wakes up in the night forever. You know,
that's brilliant. I mean, he'll always have that pain and shame.
Yeah. What a great contestant though.
Really great.
And Sally, it's the five points for Sally. And it's lovely to see this ambition
still rewarded, even though it was technically an abject failure um she asks Alex uses Alex the only one to use Alex asks Alex to
take a coconut uh and post it to the Prime Minister of Fiji yeah that's nuts and it only
gets the East Sheen post office because um but you're not allowed to send coconuts to Fiji
I mean it's brilliant it is great's really good. I can't remember
if I ever used Alex
because I would maybe assume
that you're not meant to
for these things.
I would always,
yeah, I would probably discount it.
And then now and again,
I found if you asked him
or were like,
can you,
he would shake his head
straight away.
But then there is a running,
he might have helped you
because there is a running thing,
certainly in the last couple
of series where Alex helps the women for some reason actually now you're
saying that i do have a memory of being on his shoulders so i must have used him for something
yeah he definitely i definitely sat on him so yeah yeah that was a lunch that was a lunch um
yeah that's just ate your sandwich on his shoulders alex come here please get me a banana that's a call back to something that happened off mic uh i've got my banana now by the way
we're gonna carry on with that let's get closure i've had the banana
carrie has a as a team of little servants in her house where she just texts them and
asks for bananas and coffee get me a banana i do it in that voice it was very impressive to watch um but great it was a great idea from sally and obviously it would have been absolutely
amazing if it had made it to fiji um but the fact it only got to ishin had still won was great still
won it was really funny wasn't it because once it does fascinate me how people's brains because she
didn't for a nanosecond consider what everyone else did no you know the
putting things on the floor and stepping on them it just didn't occur to her she immediately just
sat on the table yeah and said come here post this yeah she went big she immediately went big
it was great yeah her brain went there straight away and she got the five points uh mark uh
unfortunately got nought points um nishish got two points and beat Mark.
As is exclaimed in the studio, he still managed to beat Mark.
Ashlyn got three and Bob got four points,
even though he fucked it.
I'll be thinking about it for the rest of my life.
I don't want to exaggerate the importance of it psychologically,
but it probably will be the last thing I think about before I die.
You might not have actually touched the ground.
I mean, we could just check the footage.
OK.
Have a look.
Yeah, he did.
You lost to a complete buffoon.
Oh, God, it hadn't even occurred to me that Nish has beaten me.
At least your actual coconut throw at the end was impressive.
All of it was impressive, apart from the bit where I destroyed my life, yeah.
Task two, create the best graph.
You have 20 minutes.
Your time starts now.
That was hard. I panicked. I would have really panicked.
I would have panicked so much at this.
Oh God.
Because initially I thought it was raft
and I thought, oh, this is going to be fun.
And then, because I watched it with my kids yesterday
and they were like, no, it's graph.
And we were all just sort of reeling
at what a hard task that was.
I mean, I'm rubbish at maths anyway.
So I probably just would have walked into that lake with stones in my pocket.
So I wouldn't have known what to do.
Cut back. You're not in the studio.
Yes. This really didn't go well for Kerry.
I just I really would have panicked.
I mean, Nish definitely has the best way of doing it is he has a simple idea.
It's a really stupid idea. And he does it he he executes it well
um yes and yeah it's it's it's a graph showing time time with nish against fun the more time
you spend with nish uh the more fun you have um and i'm sure there'll be some uh some graph experts
listening to this to tell us if any of these graphs actually make sense or they are the correct
way of doing it because i mean i think the axis seems to be a different way around how i've normally seen it on
on graphs with nish's one but it's still it's still pretty good and the perfect representation
of nish's humor i think yeah and also mildly perilous because if you stand on a rate you
really could get hit in the face which would have been right even more fun yeah even more fun times
with nish were available if he'd
gone full fast yeah exactly and that that would represent the speed at which the rate comes up
is exactly how much the fun would have gone up yeah absolutely um it's lovely but the people
really bullying him that it niches niches vertical axis isn't isn't flat see i mean now you're saying
words and i don't really understand them i don't understand they said nish had a big fat tummy okay fine i just i just do not understand
the graph terminology i just i'm completely at sea with it i'm rubbish at maths do you have any
idea what you would have done um i what well i can't sort of be objective now because i've watched
them doing it so i probably would have done something a bit similar to marks maybe but not
the subject matter but just done like a bar a simple bar graph and i don't know what i'd have
made the topic yeah because all their topics were a bit whack well apart i'd say bob's what was
bob's oh piss piss oh my god that was bob's is one of the
best thing i've ever seen yes yes i mean this let's talk about this now because look i love
niches i'm glad i got five points i think it was simple i think it was really good fun
bob's was genuinely hilarious yes the counties of britain and how much urine they produce and
it's another i'd say this is one of two bob riffs in this series, which is two of my favourite moments in British television.
Oh, wow, really?
I mean, this riff about trying to secure gallons of piss
because he was having a feud with a man on the Woolwich Ferry
is just perfect.
Yeah, it's Bob Mortimer gold, isn't it?
You can just see people absolutely melting in the studio.
It's so funny.
Yeah, absolutely.
It's so funny.
And a great graph. I learnt something. I'm assuming it's so funny absolutely so funny yeah um and a great a great graph like
i learned something you know i'm assuming it's all fact um they produce a lot of urine uh as a
county not per person is very specific about that um and a bar graph it was good to see a bar graph
yeah and it was very neat it was well executed yeah yeah very good it ticked every box really
didn't it for comedy accuracy surrealism yeah i do i love seeing i do love to see nish get the
five points but i think maybe bob deserved five as well yeah yeah it would have made any difference
he still won but it was great yeah um mark went with i mean just how badly it was drawn as well really made me laugh yeah
marks was a shambolic mess but i think that's the one i i probably would have ended up like that
well what did he do it was about um political parties through yeah vote share across time
and all people as greg said it demonstrated the futility of democracy yeah i don't know where he
was coming from with that one i didn't quite fully no but it's
so funny that then he sort of like wide wild-eyed stead stared at Greg and was like no it's all
about the sort of futility of all endeavor really and it makes you think I wonder if this was quite
late in the taskmaster filming process if you're having feelings like that yeah about how futile
just anything is this they're funny those days aren't they because you it really does depend on
what order of the day
they give you the thing.
So first up you're all kind of keen and creative.
And then by the end of the day, you're like,
oh fuck this, I'm walking into a lake.
Yeah.
It's a lot of those, a lot of those instincts
at the moment Kerry.
Yeah.
Well, it just is that, that is a,
they are quite intense days, aren't they?
As you know, they can be long, crazy days.
And if they chuck a sort of complex one to you at the end of the day,
you're like, I wish you'd given me that in the morning
because I would have come at it very differently.
Yeah, but I think it's just that it's the end of the day, right?
So whatever it is at the end of the day, you're like, oh, God.
Yes, but all I would be able to handle is, I don't know,
a treasure hunt maybe or a little game of noughts and crosses.
Throw an egg in a bucket, that sort of thing.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, not do a graph or write a song.
I felt like Mark's graph was overscored here.
I think the way it looked...
What did he get?
He got three.
And the bottom three all got three.
So it was the least amount of points.
But I felt like it wasn't as good as Sally's or Aisling's.
No, I think you're right. It was a mess.
Sally went with the Omnipurpose Jaws of Doom graph.
Still no one has explained to me what that is or what that means.
I couldn't understand the graph.
No, I didn't understand it at all.
We just got some sex gags out of it, didn't we?
Yeah, as far as I could work out,
it was just another one of Sallyally's like horndog tasks um ashling uh this was i this is the i think the bravest
reaction to a task anyone has ever had on taskmaster yeah doing a graph showing the
difference in number of men and women on the show i think that is the fact she was like i'm
gonna do this this is not something
i'm gonna take privately to production i'm gonna i'm gonna publicly make a graphic make a task of
it and fair play yes because at that stage i suppose how many women have been on it by then
yeah i mean that is something that i think is is some way to being being redressed now so we would
have to go back and change the graph i mean you have to change the graph anyway bearing in mind the uh the graph was inaccurate it actually said there were
more more women than there were yeah but it looked lovely hers was visually pleasing very nice yeah
i really liked it and i like the women represented by a pile of mess and yeah that was great by a
head and a hand yes great i really. I really, really liked it.
Yeah, it was very funny.
I enjoyed that very much.
And that was three points as well.
I mean, they couldn't really give it less than three,
could they?
No.
They were like, no, one point and we're editing it out. We will silence you, woman.
Definitely risky to do that.
If you're thinking of collecting vast amounts of piss,
go up to Dumfries and Galloway, which I was.
If you already want small amounts, e.g. for household use,
you might like to consider East Sussex.
How did you get these statistics?
Absolutely accurate,
cos I was looking into purchasing...
..gallS of piss. Because I was in dispute with the Woolwich Ferry man.
I thought, fuck it, I'll fill his boat with piss.
LAUGHTER
Where do I need to go?
LAUGHTER
So, people in Dumfries and Guy Way piss about ten times as much
as people in East Sussex?
Oh, they literally can't stop.
Look, I only had time to stop for the one scotch pie,
and then the stream stopped.
Hi, it's Terry O'Reilly, host of Under the Influence.
Recently, we created an episode on cannabis marketing.
With cannabis legalization, it's a brand new challenging marketing category.
And I want to let you know we've produced a special bonus podcast episode
where I talk to an actual cannabis producer.
I wanted to know how a producer becomes licensed,
how a cannabis company competes with big corporations, how a cannabis company markets its products in such a highly regulated category, and what the term dignified consumption actually means.
I think you'll find the answers interesting and surprising.
Hear it now on Under the Influence with Terry O'Reilly.

Bonus task, a lovely bonus task.
There are quite a few in this series uh but this one make the most
fish puns i think this is controversial it's most fish puns wins you have one minute your time starts
now so sally then has one minute under timed conditions panicked to come up with and she did
pretty well i think she got eight i thought that was good. She's standing in water.
You know, she's having to come up with this.
It's the first time she's heard about it.
Alex seems to have, I mean, he claims to have one minute,
but he has the whole of the filming process.
Yeah, I mean, that is a cheaty, it's a cheaty little game.
Were any points lost or gamed in it?
Well, Sally didn't get any points because Alex beat her.
But in a round that no one else got any points either so yeah sort of set her down i feel like that you can't do it
based on the competition between her and alex because no that's unreasonable because alex had
the whole filming process he wrote the task so he's got all that time to go i'm going to do this
one i'm going to drop it in there it's not like he has one concentrated minute and he's got all that time to go, I'm going to do this one. I'm going to drop it in there. It's not like he has one concentrated minute
and he's never seen it before
and he's standing in a lake.
So I feel like Sally was cheated out of those points there.
That is a flurry of just pure entertainment,
but not genuinely part of the competition.
I mean, obviously it's wonderful to see
that Alex has been doing it the whole time
and that we've missed it watching the series
and there's all these little fish buns dropped throughout.
Great television.
But in terms of the competition, I feel like Sally was hard done by yes it was mean and cruel well
it's one of those little set pieces isn't it were there many of those in your series no I don't
think we just had the hula hooping one where James and um we yeah me Jess and Rod didn't have to do
any hula hooping and James and Phil did a lot. Yeah. Yeah. That was,
yeah.
I don't think we had,
they're quite sparing with the individual tasks now because there were so many good ones in the first few series.
I think people started to expect them.
So I know that James certainly the whole time was paranoid and on guard that he was going to get given his own task.
And he was.
And get tricked. And he was, yes.
Yeah.
But.
He manifested it with his paranoia.
He's good at that.
But no, in our series, no.
No, I don't think there were any individual tasks.
So I think that Phil and James did the hula hooping and me,
Jess and Rod did the Fez.
We had to do the fez task.
Yes.
So it was an individual task, but we were divided up.
Yes, it was balanced out in a way.
No, so it was no points for Sally there, sadly.
And I think that's disgraceful.
But she was brilliant.
I thought she was fantastic.
Yes.
I mean, if you put me in the middle of it late and said come up with fish puns, I really would freak out.
You're not really a punster, are you, Kerry? I'm not a punster and i find them they really wind me up they like i find them
personally awful like i i get if people do puns at me i'm like oh fuck you i can't i just can't
deal with them they're like um joke maths i just think oh no i don't want i don't want this yeah they're like
riddles yeah they're like graphs again it's just they're like graphs yeah humor graphs yeah they're
like badges that's what they are they're like little badges on a lapel of like talking about
what i thought she won on outsiders again well it's but it is they do have that kind of trophy
vibe don't they this is this goes back to our theme of me and trophies and badges and i'm like oh don't go off with your puns i just can't i can't deal with them
did you get a trophy for outsiders i did and it's next to my greg head in the garage
fuck you um right you couldn't borrow it if you like i'll lend it to you
i don't deserve that one.
I don't deserve to touch that one.
Me and Lou were an absolute disgrace on that show.
Oh, you were wonderful.
I don't want to cup on about it,
but I'm worried that they might be construed.
Congratulations.
It's a lovely place, though, isn't it?
It's a beautiful place.
I'm going to use the tuna baked beans.
Tuna baked beans.
I'm going to get you something to perch on.
There are three tasks in a row for you there.
OK. Let me know when it's close enough.
Just a minute.
Ooh, I've already got a haddock. Just.
How do you feel? Fine.
I feel a little bit tense, but fine. Fine.
That was very official.
I haven't got very good hair, Regan,
but I think I heard you OK.
I'm sorry, but I've dropped the task.
Not on purpose, but I've dropped it.
Task three, it's a team task.
It's the one potentially that people talk about the most
when it comes to this series and Taskmaster as a whole.
Write and perform a song about this woman.
Best song wins.
You have five minutes to talk to the woman and 30 minutes to write her a song.
Your time starts now.
Now, it's an interesting one because they've done similar things
with similar formats.
There's the Impress This Mayor.
They meet a mayor for the first time.
After this, of course, in Series 9, in our series,
we had to meet someone learn
as much as we could about him uh and then um and then we had like a quiz on him i think or it's
like a lie or truth thing we had to work out whether he was lying or telling the truth and
we had a quiz it's that it's so disconcerting when you walk in for the last you know few weeks or whatever five or six times
you've been in there and someone else and isn't there and the new person's there we had to do
yeah we did we had to make someone laugh we had to make this course the traffic miserable man no
he wasn't was he a traffic he was just a really grumpy miserable man and he genuinely was quite
hard to make him laugh yes but yeah but that wasn't quite the same
because you didn't really have time to go away and prepare anything you had to just do it there
and then but it is it is odd isn't it it's quite jarring when you see someone new yes because
you're curious as to who they are you're like how have you come to be doing this yeah um and that
woman yeah yeah i mean she was sort of extraordinary do you think she did do all those
things it is incredible isn't it because they did manage to pick a woman with loads of strings to
her bow I mean unbelievable I can sort of see where the where Bob and Aisling and Sally came
from with the you know she's really fucking annoying. Because it was like, if you met her at a party, you'd just think, all right, all right,
you do all these things, good for you.
Yeah, I mean, Bob's questions were great anyway.
Yeah, they were brilliant.
Do we strike you?
What's your favourite meat?
Have you stolen?
Yeah, have you stolen?
Yeah, that was brilliant.
I mean, incredible.
I mean, Rosalind was great
and a really great sport for doing it.
Yeah.
Some of her answers, genuinely odd.
Her favourite food is beans on toast and she wouldn't like the power of flight.
Yeah, it was really, it was, they went full deadpan with the choice of Rosalind.
Yeah, they did. I liked her very much.
Good fodder for a song.
Indeed. And let's talk about the songs.
Let's talk about Aisling, Bob and Sally's first.
Okay.
The Products of Conception.
As Alex says when he brings them on,
they're called the POC, which is very interesting
because that means something completely different now.
What does that mean?
People of colour.
Oh, right.
So, yeah, the acronym doesn't stand.
The complete opposite.
Right.
Yeah, that doesn't work, that one.
No. And they sing their song quite good quite
good considering um which is very funny and very brave as greg says saying rosalind's a fucking
nightmare yeah um but it is in comparison it is much less competent than mark's initiative yes
and that and because it is good and you go but it just was bettered by mark and
niches so it really was because it's a straight interpretation of facts some of it it's you can
see the interview and then what they've done is just put those exact things straight into
oh any of them musicians because um that's a huge like i mean do you remember in my series there was
a there was one where we had to do a musical task and you do sort of think but
if I can play an instrument and I'm a capable musician I have a huge advantage in it definitely
and Nish does doesn't he Nish can play guitar and is a musician so yes yeah exactly and Mark
seemed to be very good at the drums he did seem so yeah but no disrespect Bob and uh Ashlyn and
Sally but they didn't seem as musically capable no but i think
and ashley was very much the the rudder of the whole thing i think performance wise she was up
front she was holding the crowd she was the one who knew the words quite often bob would just drop
off i don't think he knew what was going on he was like the best of that outfit really wasn't he
very much he was the best um and the harmonizing was pretty awful i mean it was really
bad but as a chorus rosalind is a fucking nightmare when you've been asked to write a song about
someone it's worth it for that it is it is i mean i i'm interested with the points the points divvying
up here because quite often greg will just give five points to something now in a team task and
give someone else a different amount of points but he was very rigid with his there are five points available so we've got to divide them up so mark and nish got
three and ashley bob and sally got two which feels unfair because mark and nish's song it's been
talked about a lot that is a five point totally yeah all day long it's brilliant yeah you could
release it as a as a song I think it would probably sell.
It's fantastic.
I mean, I knew Nish could play guitar.
I've been to university with Nish.
I was in a sketch group with him.
We used to do songs.
Yeah.
He, you know, we live together.
He plays guitar all the time.
But I think it surprised a lot of people,
especially given that we've had eight episodes of Nish being utterly incompetent at most things.
And there he was in his comfort zone.
Yeah. But lyrically
it was brilliant lyrically it was brilliant they used the information but they made it into an
actual good song they really thought about it mark's body makes sense drumming yes he's born
to drum definitely born to drum yes also because and interestingly one went with like slagging her
off and one went with celebrating her.
There was just something really lovely and sweet about the one that celebrated her.
You know, that just sort of, you know,
because she does seem to be an extraordinary person.
I love the whole setup of her just sitting in a deck chair, you know,
seeming to be unmoved.
That's just visually hilarious.
Apart from you could see the toe tapping and that was it.
That's when you knew they were going to win,
that they got Rosalind's toe tapping.
And it was just wonderful.
I mean, I think they've, Mark and Nish have done the song since.
I think they did it over lockdown on a Zoom and stuff.
Oh, really?
Yeah, on one of Mark's live streams.
It will be like Oasis.
People will be wondering if they'll ever get back together
and play that song, you know, just one last time.
And they will.
I don't think they're in a similar sort of...
They're not as hostile with each other as the Gangplains are.
They like each other.
Yeah.
But I love the whole setting it up like a festival.
Yeah.
I thought all of that was just so lovely.
Yeah, really, really good.
And I love both of them.
It's one of the great tasks.
And it was a pleasure to watch it again.
Do you think, with regard to the team tasks you have
a slight advantage if you're in the two rather than the three well it really depends who's in
them right because you're across all the shows so statistically is it so that the twos do a little
bit better than the threes yeah i mean it probably is if they're on the same page um but then but then so take i could speak
for my series series nine uh i was in the three with rose and katie yeah i think we were all
pretty competent and on the same page and then david baddiel and joe brand were in were chaos
were well yeah not even chaos they were on the same page but that same page was we could not
give a shit and we're gonna to do this as slowly as possible.
Again, which is great telly, but not great for points.
Yeah, exactly.
But then we were quite chaotic because we were excited
and we were rushing everything.
Yeah.
So it really does depend because, I mean,
you and Jess were an amazing team.
We were on the same page,
and I think the boys were a little bit more.
My favourite moment in ours is when James said,
I just wish I was with the girls.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, yeah, but also I think that's James blaming other people
when he had a big hand in how bad his team was as well.
But they just didn't pull together, did they, those three?
Not at all, no.
They had big arguments, but how funny was that?
I just liked being in a pair.
The neatness and symmetry of it really suited me. Yes, no. They had big arguments, but how funny was that? I just liked being in a pair. The neatness and symmetry of it really suited me.
Yeah, and I've spoken to both you and Jess about it multiple times,
but the soap opera thing was just so good.
Yeah, we really enjoyed that.
Oh, so good.
Two, three, four.
I'm always seeing you do cool stuff.
I try my best, but it's terrible.
Good enough.
I try my best but it's never good enough.
I want to serve you beans on toast.
But it's a fantasy, it's nothing but a boast.
You come from Southport, Olive Miles or Wayne Ballard.
And I'm a coward and I feel a wrath of Alan.
I'm always seeing you do cool stuff. I try my best but it's never good enough.
Good enough.
One more time.
I'm always seeing you do cool stuff.
I try my best but it's never good enough.
Let's talk about the final live task of Series 5.
Throw your egg through the hoop and catch it as many times as possible.
You may not touch the net or post.
The most successful hoop catch combo wins.
You have 100 seconds and one egg. It is quite funny with Taskmaster that you can have something as epic and beautiful as that song task and then what it all comes down to is throwing eggs yeah well
tell me about it sausage or finger everything yeah but sausage or finger was iconic though
sausage or finger is an iconic live task uh this one a bit more straightforward but very good all
the same if anything i mean look the highlight of this is the whistle blowing and nish immediately
throwing the egg straight into the hoop
and it smashes everywhere and he's out.
It's so funny.
Yeah.
I mean, eggs and coconuts don't, he's not, you know,
he doesn't have a good episode with those little things.
But it's brilliant because he ends the series as he has been throughout the series
and it is wonderful.
Yeah.
I mean, no one has a really good time on this.
Ashley, Mark or Nish get any points whatsoever.
Sally does sort of get an egg through the hoop,
but Greg's in a generous mood, gives her four points.
And Bob manages it once and gets the five points, which is...
I mean, this is my kind of task
because it's actually really simple and really hard.
Yeah.
And it's just not...
Did you find sometimes with live tasks where they'd explain it
and you'd go, I just don't understand,
because you're quite giddy anyway and you're in the studio.
And it's like, what?
And one or two almost didn't work.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
They're just on the precipice of falling apart.
Yes.
I do like the ones where it's i mean i
had ones where i thought i'm gonna be brilliant at this like a throwing thing or and then i remember
that i'm not i'm so bad at that so we had one where we had to slide uh glasses of water down
a bar like a western oh that's great and i was like this is brilliant this is gonna be so good
and it was awful oh really I was so bad at it.
I just lost straight away, I think.
And that was really frustrating
because I really wanted to have a good go.
So, yes, it was Bob who got the five points there.
The final scores of this episode.
Sally takes the victory, 17 points.
Bob on 16.
Nisha on 14.
Mark, 11, which has really cost him this episode,
cost him the show, really.
Yeah. Aisling, really. Yeah.
Aisling 10, a rare non-bottom for Nish,
a lovely way to finish with a third from him.
And Nish, of course, finishes the series on 107 points.
He broke into triple figures.
That's something to be proud of.
Is he one of the lowest scoring contestants?
Yeah, I don't know.
He's not rock bottom, but he's certainly down there.
Who is rock bottom out of curiosity? Oh question i mean i can absolutely someone will know that
won't they well our friend uh our friend jack bernhardt who's been on the show uh three times
um is our resident taskmaster stats man yeah um and he has done spreadsheet after spreadsheet after he sounds like great fun
he well he genuinely is and i'm sure he is but he and i are different creatures that's all i'm saying
is very self-aware about the uh the spreadsheet situation thank god and also has a new baby so
i think quite often he's just up really late looking after looking after it right baby you
need to do something with your tired mind yeah um but there's
so many specific things i mean i hate to break to you kerry in quite a lot of the uh situations i am
i am i am top are you um yields this is why you like this guy and you keep getting them on your
podcast no because all he keeps doing is finding he's, and how is it if we remove prize tasks, who's the best contestant?
And gets annoyed if I'm top again.
You're very good at Taskmaster, Ed.
You are.
Yes.
I mean, yes, I am.
Performance on objective tasks.
So these are tasks where there's no judgment from Greg,
like an art task, where there's no like, oh, yeah,
I quite like that one, where it's always like time or amounts.
Yes.
I'm top and you're second.
What?
Yeah.
Oh, my God. I'm over the moon about that.
I had no idea.
Because it's straightforward.
That's the Bosch stuff, right?
Yes. Yeah. That's amazing. I just thought there. Because it's straightforward. That's the Bosch stuff, right? Yes.
Yeah. That's amazing.
I just thought there might be more contestants that are sort of
with us in that category.
Who else is that kind of way?
John Richardson.
Yeah, that doesn't surprise me.
Yeah, John Richardson,
Morgana, Rob Beckett.
Rose was a bit like that, wasn't she?
Yeah, but she's certainly not in the top 10.
I'm so sorry to say.
But yeah, to answer the question,
Nish is low down.
Paul Chowdhury's low down.
But bloody entertaining.
I mean, is there an entertaining Rob?
No, because, well, if there is,
I'm not looking at it.
But this is all about Bob.
Bob took the victory.
And deservedly so.
Deservedly so.
It was a really stunning performance across the whole series from Bob.
He's so beloved, isn't he, Bob?
I mean, if he wins, you're like, great, we're going to see more Bob.
Yeah, of course.
And he's such a nice man as well.
And just so laid back and just the most naturally funny man.
So, you know's it's an obvious
bob victory 138 clear by eight points mark and sally joint second uh with 130 uh poor old mark
um people forget mark comes second we forget we forget it every time we talk about him because
we talk about him as if he's the worst contestant ever but he was very very good he was great so
shout out and greg and alex were really good in
this in that episode i thought i like their little set pieces i like the whipping off of the shirt at
the end you know what we never say that and it's about time we do very good at this as well they're
really good at it and they do these little little plays you know i like a little play you love a
little play and they have their little more common wisey moments and i find them
so much fun yeah they're just so much fun i think and their little role play with the with the wok yeah and uh i just think they're great the little um moments with greg and alex they are great and
you can tell because the contestants sit there watching it like an audience in everything
absolutely i always felt like I was in the front row
of one of the greatest
comedy double acts
when we were doing
the studios
oh it's nice
and you won't get that
with anyone else really
because comedians
won't laugh at
anyone else's stuff
they do
so it's rare to see
Aisling was on
126
and Nish
on 107
very happy to see him
break into the triple figures but it's an obvious bottom6 and Nish on 107. Very happy to see him break into the triple figures,
but it's an obvious bottom place for Nish.
Kerry, thank you so much for coming back on the Taskmaster podcast.
Thank you for having me. It's always a joy.
You're on tour and you have been for many years now.
Yeah, I've been to tour because of COVID.
All tours are just kicked down COVID street, aren't they?
So it was on and then it was off and then it was on and then it was broken up by other things.
But I'm still on tour. I've still got more dates.
Your tour is called Bosch, which is an ironic title given how many times it's taken to get it going again.
You've not really Bosched it out.
But it has a Taskmaster link, so appropriate for our conversation.

Go to kerrygodleman.com to book tickets.
