There's probably, I would say probably three times a year I fall asleep in shoes. You told me the thing that you should never look under a Costco chicken. Well, I don't think you should ever look under a chicken. So tune in every Wednesday for a brand new episode of On Brand with John and Marissa. Available now wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:00:57 See you there. recorded live at corolla one studios with adam corolla and board certified physician and addiction medicine specialist dr drew pinsky you're listening to the adam and dr drew show yeah get it on got to get on a choice we're gonna mandate you get it on board certified physician's addiction medicine specialist yeah man what's going on i got a bunch You get it on? on line two, if you don't mind. All right, let's talk to Mike, 44, Orlando, Florida. What's going on? Oh, man, let's see. Hold on, Mike. See if we need to pot him up.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Let's see. I hit line two here. Hold on, Mike. Hold on. Wait, wait, wait, Mike. Mike, we just got you. Go ahead. Say that again.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Oh, I'm so sorry. Hi, guys. How are you? I've Oh, I'm so sorry. Hi, guys. How are you? I've been a fan for 20 years. Love you guys. Quick question. I'm a ER nurse for six years. I've been in emergency medicine for almost 20.
Starting point is 00:02:14 A big uptick I've been seeing in the last two or three years is parents coming in with kids. And all of a sudden, it seems like everyone is, quote-unquote, like on the spectrum. And I'm just concerned that this is just one, lazy diagnosis from doctors who don't want to deal with it, two, shitty parents, combination of both of those, or is there actually an actual uptick in children who are autistic and having behavioral problems that are not their fault or not their parents' fault or just not getting the medicine they need. I'm just, it just seems like half. It just seems like this crazy number. I just don't know if this is real
Starting point is 00:02:58 or fake or what. I listen, I would file it under peanut allergies and gluten allergies. And I mean, some of it is physiological, but most of it. Look, when you announce here's the spectrum for anything, like I'm on the spectrum for racism. I don't know if you knew that about me. But if in fact there is a spectrum, then I would be on it. You must be on that spectrum. Most everyone would be on that spectrum. You know, if you just said, do you have, are you in the Klan?
Starting point is 00:03:28 No. Do you have thoughts about certain cultures? Yes. Oh, well, now you're on the spectrum. So wouldn't we all make it onto that list? Yeah, yeah. So when they do this thing where it's like, oh, like I'm on the spectrum for all this shit
Starting point is 00:03:41 because I close my eyes when I'm concentrating. You know what i mean or you don't make eye contact at all times i get fixated with certain ideas that i want to that bother me and stuff and by the way it's all good shit yeah so fuck right off but now i'm on the spectrum yes yes so as soon as you create a spectrum, by definition, everyone is on it. As soon as you create a hammer, there's a lot of nails. Yeah, but no. What I'm saying is, look, if you close your eyes and you never open your eyes,
Starting point is 00:04:17 then you're autistic. You know what I mean? But if you close your eyes when you're calculating a math equation in your head, then you're on the spectrum. Okay, now we're all on the spectrum. I think the problem that concerns us in health care is that now we have to bend over backwards to adhere to these kids because we have to deal with, I'm sure Drew knows about, the patient surveys and all these different things we have to adhere to to make sure that they're satisfied and they're happy. But we all know that a lot of these times it's not really a real thing, so we don't really know how to approach it.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And I have like zero sympathy level in my body left. I'm not sure how to approach it anymore. You risk in those evaluations, much the way Adam is on the racist spectrum. You're on it too. Well, no, no, you'd be on the neuro-normative sort of non-neuroonormative alienation scale. In other words, because you're not responding to the – your normative neurological privilege is causing you to sit in judgment of the non-neuronormative.
Starting point is 00:05:16 If you met a guy at a cocktail party who was half Jewish and half Asian and he said, oh, what do you do for a living? And he said, I play professional do you do for a living? And he said, I play professional basketball. And you went, what? Racist. You're on the spectrum. No, you're on the spectrum. You're not a racist, but you're with me.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I'm higher than you, but you're on the racist spectrum. You see? That's how it works. So to your point, there's a lot of contributing factors, right? Back in the day, by the way, we got rid of the spectrum became broader and wider. And things that used to be just sort of odd or interesting or a character trait, whatever, suddenly became on this particular spectrum. And we did not identify it before. And people were also put away back in the day. You know, they weren't sort of – if you had MR, remember that? You were sort of hidden away.
Starting point is 00:06:13 And so you're seeing more non-normative stuff. But there also is an increase. There also is an increase. But the question is, is the increase at the level you seem to be perceiving clinically, and I suspect not. Yeah, I mean, it just feels like childhood fibromyalgia, you know, where it's like they're just putting this generic term on something that doesn't really have a measurable scale. Right, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:33 So it's super frustrating for us. Can I ask you one quick question? Yeah. One of my favorite deep dives recently is listening to you guys on Old Loveline on YouTube. There's no way you guys could ever go back on Terrestrial Radio and do that ever again now, right? Just some of the stuff you said back then, there's no way
Starting point is 00:06:49 that would pass muster now, right? I'm guessing. Or could you still do anything? Well, I think we could do the lion's share of it. I don't know if we could do all of it. We might have to be careful about things we were not careful about before. I think what Adam was telling women to cement their vagina shut because there are too many kids, that may not pass now.
Starting point is 00:07:10 I'm just not sure. I would argue that he might even say that with a greater sense of urgency now. Now more than ever. I'm also on the spectrum of misogyny. Oh, yeah, you're way down. You're way up on that spectrum. Of course you are. But I'm still on the spectrum.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Yes, you're on the spectrum. Right. And you are too, Drew. I'm sure. You have thoughts about your wife. I'm sure I do. Some of them aren't kind, and women in general. We're all on the spectrum.
Starting point is 00:07:35 That's what I'm saying. First of all, how dare you? Kindness is my middle name. It's true, but you still have thoughts. Thanks, Mike. And also, Radio Wearsley isn't a business anymore, right? Does it even exist as a
Starting point is 00:07:52 thing? Could they do a syndicated product anymore? I don't know. I mean, it exists, that's for sure. It exists. Not syndicated radio, does it, though? I guess it does. I guess Hannity has Not syndicated radio, does it, though? I guess it does. I mean, I guess Hannity is a syndicated radio show.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Yeah, there's plenty of syndicated shows out there. I think they all offer like a podcast version of the radio show, and maybe it's not as robust as it was in the 90s or something like that, but it exists. You want to see Anna Navarro crying, or what do you want to do? I'm going to go to line three real quick. I can go to line one after that, but after Anna Navarro. John, 35, Knoxville.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Yes, yes. Yes. A long time, first time. I love both of you guys. I've been listening to the pod since the early days. Thanks. guys. I've been listening to the pod since the early days. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:08:44 But, yeah, Drew, I'm actually, last caller actually did remind me, I'm a practicing therapist right now, and I do see a lot of autistic children, and yeah, I've
Starting point is 00:09:00 wondered about the spectrum diagnosis, too, but to get to my point, you have a long storied career with addiction and I'm just starting out really in my career. And when it comes to my clients who have substance abuse issues, but have not really reached that point where they're ready to admit it. I'm just wondering about what your experience has been when it comes to broaching that topic initially, because I don't want to offend or be too combative when it comes to these things. Stop with all that, because the addict counts on that. The addict counts on expressing righteous indignation.
Starting point is 00:09:55 It's all about maintaining the using. Every strategy they use is to maintain using. So you have to call it out. You have to say, well, look, I deal with mental health issues. One of the things I commonly deal with is substance abuse. You clearly have that diagnosis. Now, we can talk about ways to deal with that. I'm willing to keep seeing you. But until that problem is in hand, it's going to be very difficult to make meaningful progress. That's it. Do not walk on eggshells. Do not hold back on anything. You are doing them a grave disservice if you don't bring it into the room. Now, you don't have – and just bring it matter-of-factly. It's just a matter-of-fact. It's no different than if they had depression or anxiety. It's just another condition that they bring into the room with you. It just happens to be one that has to be managed in order for anything else to happen. Now, you can certainly, once you've brought it into the room, work on motivational interviewing.
Starting point is 00:10:46 What would it be like if you stopped using it? What keeps you from stopping using it? You've heard me tell them, I don't think we can make a lot of progress in other areas. Why wouldn't you consider just a lot of therapeutic wonderment and motivational sort of enhancement? And that's it. And if they want to keep using it, they keep using it.
Starting point is 00:11:04 And if you feel to keep using, they keep using. And if you feel like you're contributing to making it enabling their using in some way, like they are satisfying someone by going to therapy when the wife sends them into therapy because they have an alcohol problem, if you're contributing, you have to really address it more aggressively. contributing, you have to really address it more aggressively. Yeah, that's one of the number one things that I do address. What are you looking to get out of this? And I've wondered about that wording too, but it is something I've kind of settled on. What do you want to get out of this experience? Whatever your particular strategy is, that's fine. But the main advice I give you when it comes to drug addicts is do not go it alone. In order to treat drug addiction, it requires a unified front, multiple caretakers with the exact same message over and over and over again.
Starting point is 00:12:03 You go it alone. I just pointed Conrad Murray over again. You go it alone. I just pointed Conrad Murray as the guy that went it alone. That's the perfect example of dealing with an addict on your own. Michael Jackson's doctor. Michael Jackson's doctor. You will get sucked into some terrible stuff. It's just, you know, as you know, it's an interpersonal disease. It pulls in everybody, and it pulls in the therapists and the doctors as well.
Starting point is 00:12:27 So if you're going to, you know, again, you can do it if you go to Al-Anon and that kind of thing. It's just not really practical if you're a solo practitioner. But make sure that our referrals are given. All right. You want Anna Navarro? I want Anna Navarro. So this is something where we were talking last show about the sort of the fact that some of the material about President Biden's behavior is sort of inevitably going to come forward, right? And there's been slow motion on the Hunter Biden library – excuse me, Hunter Biden laptop.
Starting point is 00:13:00 And The View addressed it just a couple days ago. And here's Anna Navarro's take on what this is all about. All she's learning on Joe Biden since he was a senator for about 20 some years. I can't tell you how much his life has been marked by losing not one child, I think you are absolutely determined. It's even more urgent. It's even a bigger issue that you will not lose another one. Yeah. The Hunter Biden story, the scandal, the this, the that, it's also the story of a father's love. And Joe Biden has never and will never give up on his son, Hunter, and will never treat him lesser than. And so he is a father first. Take it or leave it. That's who he is. That is part of his heart.
Starting point is 00:13:50 There was 380 people at this dinner. It's not like Hunter was sitting at Merrick Garland's lap. It was a bunch of people. And I think part of the reason that Hunter Biden has been able to get out of addiction is because Joe Biden embraced him. I've known whoever knows. And I wasn't on the verge of crying. I thought she was more choked up.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Get your shit together. Sorry about that. All right. I want to say this. Yeah. Hunter Biden story. I. Yeah, I agree.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Does love his son. I wish my dad had that kind of love for me where I could cut some deals with Ukrainian energy companies and Chinese businessmen. And he flew me to Russia and China and Ukraine. And I could cut some deals with some people and make some fucking coin. Yes, he does. He cares very much. Very involved. Like many parents.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Way more involved. I don't know, Drew, did your dad ever fly you around for business deals? No, never did. My dad didn't leave the fucking sofa in North Hollywood. My dad wouldn't drive me. If I got a job at the McDonald's in Studio City, he wouldn't drive me there. Yes, Anna Navarro is right. He's very much involved, and he has great love.
Starting point is 00:15:05 He does have great love. And I would argue it's not inconsistent. Like, you think I'm making fun of him. No, I'm not. No, no, no. He cares about his sobriety. He cares about him as a human being. And if you have a son who's unable to provide for himself,
Starting point is 00:15:24 and there's an opportunity for him to make some money and do some business with some folks that are somewhere on another part of the planet. And you have some you curry some favor with those folks in those environments. Then, yes, you would bring your son as part of your love for your son. Why? It's not inconsistent. She's right. However, the way she's framed it is wrong. Like most, certainly many parents of addicts, the addict uses that love to maintain their illness.
Starting point is 00:15:57 And particularly, she's right, when there's been a lost child, the addict holds over the parent, I'm going to die if you don't. Two children. children well meaning the drug addict is lost to addiction i i get it but i i that's what i was thinking but then she transitioned into hunter in a way that was confusing so i don't know if there was another i only know of one i we gotta figure that out because that's – no, I'm only saying this because her job is a presenter. You can't be confusing when that's your job, although if you're on The View, I guess. So the point is that the addict takes parents and twists their fear of the patient dying as a way to manipulate the parent into continuing their illness.
Starting point is 00:16:45 And I know of no better way than to continue a drug addict's illness than to give them lots of money. So this is really serious. Look, it's love, but it's enabling behavior. And it's very intense enabling. Also, the, okay. So the, okay. Ladies with the zero burger circle talk,
Starting point is 00:17:10 I have such a profound reaction to it, Drew. It's like when you're sitting around, like you'll, as a father, first off, you never stop being a father. Like there's great love. All father's children, Naomi Christian, my nickname, Amy, was born oh oh she right died in the car crash yes right okay so she was see you didn't get it but yes uh yeah he had a daughter die and then he had a son die awful which is awful uh but it's still, you can still be a criminal, which,
Starting point is 00:17:45 which he is. I mean, it'll look, there's, there's a steeping, you know, it takes a while for this stuff. I just think of it the way I think of weapons of mass destruction that started
Starting point is 00:17:56 from a certitude to a scandal took about three, four years. It takes a little while, but it, it's coming. You know, it's a weird thing. Yeah. What's a, I brought this while, but it's coming. You know, it's a weird thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:06 I've brought this up, but it always strikes me as strange when you watch Fox and they go, even the networks are starting to report on this. It's like it's such a novelty that ABC News and CBS News would actually report on a story where the president's son is basically grifting and taking money from rogue nations and then whacking that money up with his dad, brother, and God knows who else. It's a novelty that CBS is covering what could be the biggest scandal in modern times. It's a novelty. It's like, oh, even they're talking about it now. It's like the conceit is, well, it's their job to cover for the guy.
Starting point is 00:18:59 But I guess even they're getting sucked into the fray now. So that's a big thing. And it is. But it's also weird conceit. Yes. You're a news organization. It's uncanny that we're saying that. You're the LA Times.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Your job is not to cover for the president. Your job is to do news and reporting. Yep. Weird. Yeah. Here we are. All right. So what were we talking about?
Starting point is 00:19:23 You want to go to line? Yeah. Let's go to line one. Do your spot first and then we'll go to line one. I want to tell you about our friends at Angie. Again, that is Angie, A-N-G-I.com. All right. Let's talk to Mike Bakersfield. Mike? How's it going, guys? Love the show. Love Corollaverse.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Thank you. Alright, so I'm a very casual marijuana user. I don't like to smoke it. Maybe once every six months, I eat an edible. I've been seeing some ads
Starting point is 00:20:45 you know even at the local liquor store for something called Delta 8 Delta 9 and I looked it up and it's supposed to be
Starting point is 00:20:52 weed like manufactured in the lab somewhere but it comes from cannabis so my question is
Starting point is 00:21:01 do you think any of that stuff is safe is it better than regular edible weed I think any of that stuff is safe? Is it better than regular edible weed? Most of that stuff that you get at the gas stations is not typically safe, and it's usually an attempt to get around drug testing. The people are desperate to use something to get around the drug test. Let me just say this, Mike.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Whether it's the weed or the Four Loko or whatever the crazy energy drinks on it that has a shot of espresso and a shot of vermouth in it and stuff, or it's down to the hot dogs that are filled with American cheese and stuff, I just don't see the reason to purchase that at the gas station. Right. Well, it's out of desperation. Well, no, but I mean, yes. But what I'm saying is it's four in the morning and you need a cheese-filled Frankfurter, then by all means. But I don't understand they just show up at lunchtime and kind of load up on chemicals. Well, let's think about it this way if you are
Starting point is 00:22:06 into the throes of sort of food addiction much like any other addiction you see the crack you're going to respond so they must have a track record of getting people that don't watch their diet to eat that shit i i'm gonna right i'm i i'm i'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're correct yeah but i mean it's but it's food larry hamilton is not in there but if you stood in line and watch who's getting the slurpees and stuff and the no i i it's like intense i've experienced it in that there are people many people out there who cannot smell savory without making a move they're literally you could have just i'm close to that you just could have eaten lunch and you're standing in line to get uh you know 100 bucks on pump number seven all of a sudden you smell the baconator on the griddle and you're like fuck it
Starting point is 00:22:57 yeah you know i mean it's like that's i think that's how it works but you're way into the responding to all that stuff but what i what i what I never – and I've always been this way for as long as I have a memory. And it may be a kind of intelligence, I believe. And I'll explain why. belief and i'll explain why as i told you many times when i was nine and someone's go let's have some sunny d i'd be like do you have real orange juice and they'd be like we got better than real orange juice we got sunny d and i'd be like they've got a nude some new alcohol drinks out oh really and i'd be like no because it tastes it tastes weird. It's weird. It's synthetic tasting. When Gatorade first came out, I was like, this is not lemonade.
Starting point is 00:23:49 It's not orange juice. It's weird. It tastes weird. All that synthetic never ate a piece of American cheese. It was weird tasting. Do you, you know, let's have some American cheese and some Sunny D. I'd be like like do you have cheddar and do you have orange juice because we could eat that why are we eating the weird shit
Starting point is 00:24:09 you're discerning discerning palates sir i've always before after you put your monocle in i was seven that's the way i felt i feel this way about every person. Were you wearing spats at that age? All the fucking people that buy like, I got Thousand Island dressing from Kraft. It's in the plastic squeeze bottle. It's like, get something in glass that's like real, you know? And they go, this is squeeze relish. And I'd be like, get real relish in a glass thing. Like, why are you doing this? And they're like, it's relish and i'd be like get real relish in a glass thing like why are you doing this and they're like
Starting point is 00:24:46 it's relish so i don't so i've said it to people 200 000 times like if you get shit if you just if your policy it when you shop now is i will only buy things in glass. I will not buy ketchup that's squeezed ketchup. I'll buy real unsweetened glass, which, by the way, tastes exactly the same. You cannot tell the difference between the stuff with the corn syrup and stuff like that. When you buy salad dressing, when you buy mayonnaise, when you buy anything, just if it's in a glass jar, you're already 32% better off. Not only are you correct in terms of the content of what you're buying, the actual mayonnaise itself and the ketchup itself, but the forever chemicals so-called that we're all worried about and the estrogenizing of the world, plastics.
Starting point is 00:25:41 And the landfill stuff too. Just buy it in glass. It's super easy. That's a very good policy. It's a great policy. Everything. Everything will be better. Every salad dressing, every Couturement, every spreadable thing, everything that goes on a sandwich, everything that goes on a hot dog, everything that goes on a burger.
Starting point is 00:25:56 It will all be better if it's in glass. And so how did you come to that? What is that intelligence? Is it just taste? No, it's not taste. It's intelligence. Well, it's intelligence in that. It's sort of like knowing what's disgusting.
Starting point is 00:26:13 A dog would not know the difference between Kraft American cheese and real-age cheddar. Or would not care at all. Might even prefer the shittier cut of beef than the better cut of beef or whatever that thing is. So that's what animals do. I was always sort of like, why are we doing the fake or sort of shitty version? Why are we doing the synthesized version of something? But you had to first become aware of that. How were you even aware of it as a young kid?
Starting point is 00:26:49 I mean, to give my mom her due, she was early money on all the chemicals and the pesticides and the processing and, you know, it was all that. And I didn't tend to listen to her when she spoke about many things. But in this particular case, when she was talking about colors and coloring and additives and red dye number seven and processing and stuff like that, big factories and stuff like that, I was kind of like, yeah, that makes sense to me. Like, why not
Starting point is 00:27:26 get the smaller off-label i mean and by the way it's it's you can set your watch on it like i was talking somebody i said get that i was talking to him on the phone i was like get the avocado oil mayonnaise. Right. Well, that's a whole other issue, too. The other one. The seed oil and the polyunsaturated fat stuff, that's a fucking catastrophe. It's a catastrophe that nobody knows about.
Starting point is 00:27:54 I know. And they refuse to fucking believe or understand. And I tell them all the time, don't do it. Just read the label. Don't do it. Just read the label. Don't do it. You can go to the supermarket and get the Kraft avocado mayonnaise, and when you turn it over, it's got soybean.
Starting point is 00:28:14 Avocado oil, number one. Number two, soybean. When you go to buy the Paul Newman, my beloved Paul Newman, olive oil and vinegar dressing, turn it over. It says olive oil, then slash, like, sunflower oil. It doesn't exist. You have to search for it. Yes. And so I tell people, you have to do this.
Starting point is 00:28:35 We should bring Kate back in here. We had her years ago. They're like, it has a picture of an avocado. I'm like, yes, it's made by Kraft, and it's in a plastic squeeze container. Don't do it. She advocates Mr. Kensington. Kensington brand. That's her thing.
Starting point is 00:28:50 First off, I don't know what's wrong with everyone. It's pretty easy. It's behavioral. What you always said, Madison Avenue. Look, if it comes from Kraft, and it's in a squeeze container, rest assured it will not. But it's like this weird thing where it's like I buy Tom's of Maine toothpaste because just spearmint toothpaste. That's it.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Everyone else has the three gel layer. You know, the first gel takes the tartar off. The second one butt fucks you. And the third one flosses for you. And it's like it's a pile of chemicals. But look at it. It's day glow in color. I use something called primal.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Do you want all the weird stuff in here? And it's like, I use this. By the way, the same people are explaining to you that uh you need to take your pilates mat and put it in an autoclave every two months because it has bacteria on the bottom it's like they're they're in the same they're also preaching masks they're preaching everything but they're eating junk yeah that's filled with weird seed oil. So, like, okay. So I was talking on the phone. I said, just go online then and just order the avocado oil mayonnaise.
Starting point is 00:30:15 And I said, it'll be in a glass jar. And they said, I found the leading brand. It is. It's avocado oil. It doesn't have any canola oil. It's just avocado oil mayonnaise. But I think it's in a plastic jar. I said, no.
Starting point is 00:30:31 I'm driving my car. They're on a fucking website. Right? I go, no. They go, that's in a plastic jar. I go, it isn't because they don't make, they don't put the shit in the plastic. And then it gets shipped to the house. It's in a glass jar.
